Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
Once again there were great crowds at the Maleny Show last weekend, matching the record number of attendees from the previous year. I reckon that was because of both the great weather and the inclusion of the jam packed Maleny Show’s ‘Entertainment Guide’ liftout in last week’s GC&M News edition! We spent Friday wandering around the show, taking photos and catching up with people we knew and it was great! However the highlight of my day was at lunchtime when I met some lovely, shall we say ‘older’, people who got chatting over a shared dining table in the show pavilion who reminded me about why the show is such an important community event. While neither of them still lives in the area they both have been coming to the Maleny Show for the past 60 to 70 years! They explained how much it means to them to be able to come back to the show each year and catch up with the many people they formed friendships with over their time living in the local area. Stuart Spenceley, aged 851/2, attended his first Maleny Show in 1949, and Jacky Green started coming to the show in the mid-1950s, and while I didn’t see them checking out any of the wild rides in sideshow alley they definitely were having a great day out! Regards,

RANGERS In 2009 the once derelict garden consisted of a few large trees, old tree ferns and some hedging. The new owners transformed the grounds surrounding the sprawling Queenslander into a genteel setting with magnolias, wisteria and deciduous trees interlaced with rows of formal box hedging and other interesting hedges of varied textures and colours.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Local News Changing face of Mooloolah Two development applications currently with Sunshine Coast Council are set to transform Mooloolah into the future. In mid-2017, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News reported on a new estate development on Kings Road Mooloolah, where 60 new housing lots are planned to live once it is constructed. This development application was given the go ahead by council last September, paving the way for an estimated 200 new residents in Mooloolah. Now another proposed residential development, situated right next door, has been advertised for public submissions. The application seeks to turn four adjoining large land parcels into 131 residential lots plus two open space parks and a new road. The 60 hectare site – which runs from Brandenburg Road through to King Road – is zoned as a mixture of rural, rural residential and low density residential uses. The application, first lodged with council in August 2017, has progressed through the development approvals process and is now at the stage where public submissions have been called for. To read more about the development or to make a submission, go to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au and search for ‘RAL17/2026’. And the centre of Mooloolah is set for a facelift, with the IGA store applying to expand their floor space, storage and carparking footprints. The current buildings to the south of the IGA (between the loading bay and Hatten Street) are planned to be demolished, making way for a 611 sq.m supermarket extension.

According to documents lodged with the application, the proposed expansion would enable the store to improve and enhance its offer to the local community including: • fresh fruit and vegetables – expanded range and more customer friendly displays; • grocery – expanded range and offer in all areas of this department; • bakery – expanded range to keep up with competing supermarkets including, for example, donuts and baked products; • deli – expanded range with a larger range of seafood lines; • meals – expansion of ready-to-go meals; and • meat – expanded range and ready-to-cook options. Glassies Gala night
MOOLOOLAH DENTAL SURGERY
Over 150 people representing businesses from across the Glass House electorate had their moment to shine last week when Member for Glass House Andrew Powell held his third annual Glass House Small Business Awards Gala Event (AKA the Glassies) at Beerwah Hideaway. With over 100 businesses and nearly 50 employees nominated this year, Mr Powell was thrilled that so many members of the community took the time to vote and show our small businesses how important they are in our community. This was evidenced by almost 6,000 votes being received during the voting period. “The night was all about promoting and encouraging the many local small businesses we have in Glass House and giving them the opportunity to bask in the spotlight. It’s our way of saying thank you for everything they do,” Mr Powell said. The Gold ‘Glassy’ winner in the Business category, Be Farm Fit, was a clear champion, which was evidenced by the huge round of applause the business received as their win was announced, and

the many positive comments left about the business on Mr Powell’s Facebook page. Their business received nomination comments such as, “Be Farm Fit has singlehandedly changed the lives of so many local women and men through her family friendly supportive exercise environment. Amie empowers her clients with her can do attitude.” Mr Powell also commended Trish Lyon, Gold Glassy winner in the Employee category, saying that she “has clearly wowed the Maleny and the greater Hinterland community with her excellent customer service skills through her work at the Maleny IGA. Mr Powell said: “All the finalists and winners on the night should be proud to be delivering the very best for our Glass House community and I

As a result of the story in last week’s paper on the community protest over the proposed petrol station development in Maleny (MCU18/0111), GC&M News was contacted by the office of Mark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads. Countering the claim made by Cr Jenny McKay, calling on Minister Bailey to intervene and reject the development on the main road (Bunya Street), Minister Bailey squarely put the ball back in Sunshine Coast Council’s court. “It is well known local development applications are decided by local government,” said Minister Bailey. “If Sunshine Coast Council Councillor Jenny McKay wants to stop this development proposal she needs to lobby the mayor and other councillors who are the decision makers.” In the meantime, the process relating to the development application before the council for the proposed petrol station at Maleny continues to advance, with council issuing the developer with an eight-page notice with thirty points of contention listed, requesting substantially more information than originally provided. Council has flagged a number of significant problems they see with the application as submitted on behalf of the Brisbane developers, Synergy Property Partners.
According to the notice, council considers there to be multiple flaws in the planning justifications provided. Council states that they believe the application falls short in meeting the required planning codes. They also question assertions made in the supporting documents relating to traffic impact assessment, air quality assessment, noise impact assessment and the stormwater management plan. Issues which have been raised by the Maleny community have been borne out in the information request notice. Council highlights that design is not consistent with the rural character of Maleny in terms of scale and form and it does not contribute to the rural town character and sense of arrival to Maleny. Council identifies that they consider the Bunya Street access inconsistent with the transport and parking code, and that there are unresolved risks to pedestrians and cyclists from cars entering and exiting the development. Council also questions some aspects of the traffic reports, specifically asking the developer to explain how they arrived at some of their assertions. The developer has three months to respond.

Stargazing world record smashed!
On the night of Wednesday May 23, over 200 people gathered together at Maleny to help smash the world record stargazing attempt. The simultaneously run event was organised by the Australian National University in conjunction with ABC TV, and the attempt formed part of the ‘ABC TV Stargazing Live’ series run over three nights that week. Brisbane Astronomical Society (Sunshine Coast Branch) facilitated the Maleny ‘star party’ which was held at their headquarters located at the Maleny Golf Club. Officially, 150 people successfully participated in the attempt itself, contributing to what organisers estimate was over 40,000 people nationwide – totally smashing the previous record of 7,900! Following an introductory talk about the night sky by Dr Ken Wishaw, attendees moved to their allocated areas to get into a comfortable position for the highly anticipated world record attempt. It was a festive atmosphere with most people well prepared with layers of warm clothes, picnic blankets and hampers brought along for the evening. Participants had to stargaze at the moon with either telescope or binoculars for a 10-minute period, and despite the occasional cloud cover, the attempt went well. There were some very impressive telescopes on display, including the ones from the Astronomical Society – the biggest public accessible telescopes

Eli and Aneisha Clark get ready for the world record attempt in Queensland. These mega-telescopes proved extremely popular with the younger members of the crowd. It was a convivial night out for both professional observers and stargazing newbies, and the evening also provided a great introduction for many to the Sunshine Coast branch of the Brisbane Astronomical Society. The event also heralded the opening of the viewing season from May to November. Public nights are held on the first Saturday after the new moon, weather permitting, and this winter will feature Jupiter and Saturn as well as Mars making its closest approach to the Earth in 20 years. Peachester Playgroup Still playing around after 40 years By Sonia Clark The award-winning Peachester Playgroup is still going from strength to strength after 40 years of operation. Its longevity is a wonderful testament to the strength of the local Peachester community, and the ongoing benefits of social engagement for all ages. With many lifelong friendships developed over the last 40 years, the long running playgroup has proven to be a community bedrock. The Peachester Playgroup originated from informal gatherings held at the Peachester Hall for parents of young children. This unofficial group was established by the then Peachester State School principal’s wife, Jenny Large. Around the Hinterland region in the 1970s there was little or no formalised day care for young children and the options for kindy or preschool were limited. For many children (and their families) the playgroup was their main way to socialise outside of the home before going on to school. Mandy Forsyth had two sons at playgroup and was one of the original members involved in the decision to become a formalised group. She remembers that, at the time, there was a large group of core members with approximately 10 mums and around 20 children, and from the very beginning mothers with preschool children of all ages were always made very welcome. When the decision was made to become an official playgroup, Mandy, along with another mum, Lesley Breton, travelled to Brisbane
and registered the group with the Playgroup Association. They brought back a slide and some play kits which contained a variety of creative/ imaginative play items such as boxes filled with bottle tops. After they became an official playgroup, the husbands got together and helped build a covered sandpit next to the hall in the early 1980s. Mandy remembers that the mums would all find a shady spot and watch the kids play in the sandpit which was then the main sources of activity. At that time, the shed and playground hadn’t been built. “Back then Peachester was a very small knit country town, we lived on a dirt road and there was a very strong sense of belonging to our local community,” Mandy said. “Everyone participated and we all helped each other out. Most of the mothers socialised outside of the group, and many friendships were forged and still continue to this day.” One of the main advantages of the group was that it provided a brilliant support network and source of interaction with other mums. Everyone was welcome to join and the kids got to play and socialise. Along with the weekly meetings (still held) on Tuesdays from 9am11am, a number of excursions were planned. Mandy remembers excursions to Queensland Reptile Park (before it became Australia Zoo) in the early 1980s and the Super Bee at Tanawha as highlights and fabulous fun.
In the late 1990s, as the playgroup continued to expand, more room was needed and the decision was made to upgrade the facilities. One of the early members, Shirley Bell, set the wheels in motion to establish what is now the Playgroup Shed. Shirley’s children have since grown up and her grandchildren have now attended Peachester Playgroup. Due to the commitment and enthusiasm from parents, grandparents and community members, as well as some successful community grants over the years, the playgroup has steadily increased its resources. A lot of time and effort has been volunteered, especially from local mums and dads, to improve access and drainage, upgrade the gardens and replace tanks. Over the last few years the Playgroup Shed has been relined, fitted with storage and decorated, provided with shading and new seating, and gates and concreted areas have been installed. Some recent achievements have included winning ‘Queensland Volunteer/Parent led Playgroup of the Year’, voted Playgroup of the Year two years running, Rebecca Morgan (nee Bell) winning ‘Co-ordinator/Contact Person of the Year’, and a beautiful playground equipment upgrade last year. Peachester Playgroup will be marking their 40th year with a celebratory morning tea on Tuesday June 12, from 9am-11am. All previous playgroup and community members are welcome to attend the event at the Peachester Playgroup Shed located behind Peachester Hall. For catering purposes please RSVP to Krysty Idle on 0400 175 134.

Community News Sorry Day celebrated
Contributed by Tanya Hayden Beerwah State High School hosted their annual ‘Sorry Day Celebrations’ as a part of their Reconciliation Week activities. The high school students were joined by students from Beerwah, Mooloolah, Beerburrum, Elimbah and Glass House Mountains State Schools. To commence, we had the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Group perform a ‘Welcome to Country’ and then demonstrate and explain some traditional dances. All Indigenous students had a short morning tea that was prepared by the Beerwah SHS
Hospitality students who served fruit as well as a range of biscuits using indigenous ingredients. After morning tea, students moved into their groups for the day’s activities. The Primary students rotated through four activities through the day including a Dance Workshop and an Artefact Display run by the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Group, as well as a painting and craft workshop with Beerwah SHS students, and Indigenous Games run by the high school Sports Captains. The High School students rotated through two
activities, participating in a dance workshop where they learnt a traditional dance. Students also spent a session filling the garden that surrounds our Yarning Circle with traditional plants. In the future, we hope that the resources in the garden can be used by the Hospitality students when preparing their dishes. After a barbeque lunch, the day was concluded with the high school students performing the traditional dance they had learnt for the primary students. Special thanks to the Gubbi Gubbi Dance group for their work throughout the day!

Glasshouse Country Good Neighbour Award
RSL rocks!
Contributed by Sheila Williams With great regret, the Beerwah branch of Neighbourhood Watch has decided to discontinue the Good Neighbour Award scheme which has been running since 2010. In recent years we have received few nominations, and none at all this year. This problem can only be exacerbated by the recent refurbishment of the Beerwah Library, which has resulted in the loss of the foyer noticeboard on which we exhibited photos of the winners, and the complete banishment of the GNA Shield from the library. As there was still some space on the shield, it was decided to use it to acknowledge the work of all the not-for-profit organisations in the area. Several of these have been nominated, and received certificates over the years, but none has actually been chosen as Good Neighbour of the Year. The photograph shows the new plaque, the central rectangular one, which gives this acknowledgement. The remaining shields bear the years 2010 and 2018, showing the lifetime of the scheme. We would like to acknowledge with gratitude the great support the Good Neighbour Award has received from GC&M News, including the donation of the shield itself.

Group crafts friendships
The craft group at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre has definitely stood the test of time. This wonderful, creative group is one of the longest living community groups in Glass House Mountains, pre-dating the establishment of the Neighbourhood Centre itself in March of 1999. The craft group meets weekly on Fridays from 9am-11.30am at the Neighbourhood Centre. It is $3.50 to attend and tea, coffee and biscuits are supplied. Bring along your craft to enjoy, share with others and seek help from others if needed, or just come along for a chat. Occasionally the group works on projects, such as quilts and knitted items, to give to good causes. All welcome. Enquiries contact Alison on 5496 9929.

Probus Club of Maleny
Probus is an international worldwide movement, formed to foster companionship for retired professional and business people; hence the name Probus. Maleny has an active Probus club which welcomes both retired and semi retired members. The club meets on the third Wednesday morning of each month at which the attendees are informed and entertained by guest speakers on a wide range of topics followed by an extensive morning tea. Additionally, the club organises events and outings within comfortable travelling distance by coach. In the next few weeks we will be taking a lunch cruise and going to gaol. Membership offers other advantages such as cheap travel insurance, guided overseas holidays with likeminded people and discounts at certain outlets. Mostly, it offers companionship and support of peers. If you are interested in attending meetings as a guest before deciding whether to join, please email malenyprobus@gmail.com or contact the Probus Association of Queensland Secretary on 0477 000 645.

Thanks for great day
I would like to thank the principal, teachers and staff and the wonderful students that put on a lovely morning tea and a very enjoyable lunch for Grandparents Day at the Caloundra Christian College. The wonderful entertainment supplied and the story of the lighthouse was very enlightening. Many thanks, from two grandparents at Beerwah that enjoyed the wonderful day. Proud Grandparents Beerwah
Roys Road
Why is it that I can drive safely at 80km/h between Beerwah and Glass House Mountains, along with the other fourteen thousand vehicles per day? This section of Steve Irwin Way has twenty four intersecting driveways, roads, shops, plus a restaurant, and can be driven at 80km/h quite safely. Yet, on Roys Road with one driveway to the Sunshine Council Depot, 200 metres either side we have a 60km/h speed restriction with road lanes and turning arrows. Is this a reflection on the poor driving standards of Sunshine Coast Council staff? Perhaps they need to take a drive on Steve Irwin Way? Remove this ridiculous speed restriction on Roys Road. All it does is impede the flow of traffic. D West Glass House Mountains

The event will see ten of the Coast and Hinterland’s premier choruses with Ken O’Flaherty taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies. This dynamic festival will feature a wide variety of singing including classical choral music, jazz, gospel and world music. Tracks not trails
Re GHC&M News May 30 ‘Beerburrum the Place to Be’: Let’s stay true blue and in doing so educate the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife service about our heritage. We are Australian and trail is an American term in lieu of our track. We should not debase our heritage and we should remember great Australians such as Andrew ‘Banjo’ Paterson, Henry Lawson and Jack O’Hagan who helped write our history and promote our way of life. It’s possible many readers may remember the opening line of the theme song of the radio program ‘Dad and Dave’ – “There’s a track winding back to that old-fashioned shack, along the road to Gundagai” by Jack O’Hagan. So here’s to remembering our history and maintaining our Australian heritage. Beerburrum will be all the better for it (and it may also help Landsborough)! Ivon Northage Glass House Mountains
Where is our kindness?
I am outraged that some residents think it is okay to discriminate against other people who are not as rich, as pretty, or as influential as others, and not want them living in our lovely semi-rural town of Landsborough! Not everyone has been as lucky as us! Some of us have fallen on bad times. Where is the empathy? Where is the love? These people need somewhere to live! Why not our beautiful town? Are we all really that shallow? New residents mean new jobs, keep business alive, more money flowing, and if we can be so kind – new friends! Is it any wonder refugees aren’t welcome when we, as a community, can’t even welcome our own people? So very sad neighbours, take a good hard look at yourselves… please… be kind… we are all different – for a reason. K McDougall Beerwah (resident for 17 years)
Fast tracking of development applications
This proposal, where a decision is made on development applications within a period of 10 working days after submission to council, will provide developers with significant advantages, but it seriously disadvantages residents and/or others who may wish to object to a developer’s application. Time taken to learn of an application through our local GC&M News, which is only published weekly, could quite conceivably result in the application only being sighted by residents a day or so, or even less, before the 10 day period has expired. To then obtain full details on the council website, assess where and what any problems are, discuss and assess the extent of these problems and draft an email or letter outlining these in your objection and have all lodged with council within the final day of the 10 working day period, would be impossible. Using the council website to directly access the application may not be possible as many residents do not have computers or access to them and most will be working anyway. The use of a fast track system is designed to save time and this will occur, but to do so at the expense of exclusion of residents’ rights to lodge objections is not acceptable. This, on top of the ‘Code Assessable’ exclusion of residents from being able to have objections legally considered by council, is one reason that members of the public are conceived as losing confidence in the integrity of local government. Transparency in this authority is disappearing fast. The conception exists that council is making it more difficult for residents to read/be aware of what is occurring in their area, and that developers are gaining easier/faster access to council procedures with little or no challenge if residents consider it inappropriate. The level playing field does not exist! J Weeks Beerwah 14

Music Today Presenting Jon Brooks
I first came across Jon’s work two years ago when he appeared at the Winterbreak Music Retreat (which he is doing again this year). Being a songwriter myself and having taught it at the university level, I watch with interest when others teach the craft. And I can say without hesitation that Jon is one of the best I have come across, which, when you look at his songs, doesn’t surprise. In my view he is also one of the best songwriters writing today. Why? Because he cares and has the talent to do something about it. In a song such as ‘Mercy’ (Google it on YouTube) we see, typical of Jon, a beautifully crafted song that has both appealing melody and poignant lyrics. He tells us here the things he once admired in people, but now with age and experience, it is “mercy” that he looks to most: “I used to admire most a poet, who… untangled this world in their verse But now that I’m older it’s mercy that I admire most…” In the similarly profound ‘Because We’re Free’, again a wonderful melodic line accompanies refrains such as the following, with which the song ends: “There is hope for this world, for this world there is hope… Because my dear, Because we’re free.” We like to put our artists in boxes, and if you were to put Jon in one, he wouldn’t look out of place next to Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan. So why isn’t he better known? Perhaps in his bio lies the answer: … his mandate is unequivocal: “I’m not interested in ‘happy songs’ – they have a place and purpose and I respect that and there’s many songwriters out there doing that without my help. I’m trying to write healing songs and, for that reason, I’m obliged to reveal a wound or two now and then. I’m even less interested in writing unhappy songs: I want to write hopeful songs; inspiring songs and I believe I owe today’s listener some hopeful argument – some good reason – as to why we should believe our present world could be improved or healed.” This outstanding Canadian singer songwriter will be in Australia for a few weeks in June, performing in Glass House Mountains on June 5. If you missed him in Glass House, there are other dates in the Brisbane area. Check these out at www.jonbrooks.ca. And do have a great month. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Awards-a-plenty
The Pioneer Park all-abilities playground extension at Landsborough has won the Playspace Award (<$0.5m) for the 2018 Queensland Region Awards of Excellence by Parks and Leisure Australia. The project was part of the community’s vision to use its parks to be a great family friendly destination and the upgrade (especially the new soft surface) has definitely made a big difference to the overall playground. A further nice bit of news, the Beerwah Tower Green structures have been shortlisted for an award in the Urban Design category at the 2018 Queensland Architecture Awards. Regardless of who wins, locals and visitors alike are all pretty proud of Beerwah Tower Green’s unique assemblage of gardens and public art; all of which reflects on the specific natural and social history of Beerwah and its transformation into a model modern country town. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on the Gold Coast this Friday.
Beerwah Library official unveiling
I am pleased to announce that on Tuesday June 5 the Beerwah Library officially unveiled the recent refurbishment together with the newly installed self-serve system. If you haven’t visited this great community library as yet, then here’s a brilliant chance to plan a visit. Why not follow that with a walk through this great community hub and then by the lake in Turner Park? Not to mention passing by the beautiful public artwork, ‘Waterways’, that has also been restored to its former glory with native and non-native species planted around the artwork to complement it.
Have your say on new Beerburrum trailhead concept plan
Frankly, it’s hard to contain my excitement for these proposed new trailhead facilities in Beerburrum. It was terrific to see so many locals at the information session held on Thursday May 24 at the Beerburrum Community Hall. Council, in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, is planning to enhance the recreational trails experience in our region. The objective is to connect the township to the national parks in a more effective way, and to connect the trails to the rail line to provide a ‘rail to trail’ functionality providing much improved access to our magnificent Glass House Mountains. I invite you to work with us on the concepts by providing your comments by Sunday June 24. It is anticipated that a revised concept landscape plan based on feedback from the community will be released to the community in July 2018. More information can be found at https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ beerburrum-trail-head-concept.
Meet and Greet in Beerwah
My next Meet and Greet session is planned for Thursday June 28, between 1pm and 3pm at the Beerwah Library Meeting Room. Drop by if you have any local government issues that you’d like to discuss. Rick.Baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

State Member for Caloundra Caloundra and the Hinterland in urgent need of critical infrastructure funds this State Budget I am calling on the State’s Premier and Treasurer to stop ignoring the Caloundra Electorate when the State Budget is handed down next month and I urge the State to fund critical infrastructure projects including: 1. Slip lanes at the Caloundra Road/Nicklin Way roundabout to reduce congestion on the roundabout 2. Installation of traffic lights at Ridgewood Road and Caloundra Road intersection 3. Converting the Caloundra Hospital into a 24hr injury and illness clinic instead of the current 12 hours 4. Duplication of the rail between Beerburrum and Landsborough 5. Donation of land or a long term lease to Mooloolah Community Centre The Labor Premier has repeatedly claimed that she governs for all of Queensland. Simple words, but the reality is the money coming here. With the Caloundra Electorate’s population set to soar in coming years now is the time to properly plan for the future. Sunshine Coast Population and Housing Forecasts data* shows the Coast is expected to see an extra 80,000 residents in less than 10 years, while completion of Caloundra South in 2031 will see an additional 20,000 dwellings and house a population of 50,000 people. I can guarantee the majority of those 50,000 people will be coming to Caloundra’s CBD and beaches on a daily basis so, it is vital we upgrade Ridgewood Road now and put slip lanes in at the Caloundra Road/Nicklin Way roundabout. Sadly we have already lost our Emergency Department in Caloundra, and not providing a 24 hour Minor Injury and Illness Clinic is beyond comprehension. Just look at the ramping figures at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The duplication of the rail line between Beerburrum and Landsborough is crucial for getting thousands of cars off the Bruce Highway each week and to cater for locals who travel to and from Brisbane every day. The Mooloolah community has also been fighting hard for the Mooloolah Community Centre to be issued a longterm lease or donation of land, without which they cannot apply for infrastructure grants and upgrade their facilities. We need these projects now, they are critical to Caloundra and the Hinterland. These projects impact on the stability of people’s lives, the greater community and the creation of future jobs. The State keeps spruiking jobs and infrastructure – these projects are ready to go. Caloundra and the Hinterland are in dire need of this infrastructure and should not be drip-fed when it comes to funding from the PalaszczukLabor Government. The State Budget is due to be handed-down June 12. *Population forecast 2016 – 303,392; 2021 – 345,782; 2026 – 386, 692. Sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

School News Chappy Week Celebration
This year’s Chappy Week at Beerburrum State School was celebrated with crazy hair day, a pancake breakfast and, to finish the celebration, a fundraising dinner at Mrs Brown’s café at Beerwah that raised $440. Chappy Week celebrates and supports the work of school chaplains, often referred to as ‘chappies’ by students. Chappies provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis, and for those who just need someone to believe in them. They are also on hand to provide support for staff and parents in school communities. Chappy Steph loves her role with in Beerburrum State School, supporting and engaging all children, staff and parents and becoming part of the school community.
Students hit the footpath
The rain held off for Glenview State School’s recent walk to school day. The grass was wet and so were our socks, but we all enjoyed meeting up and walking. There were a record number of walkers this year and it was great to see so many Prep students participating.
Could it be the enticement of a perfectly cooked sausage?

Contributed by Sally Joyce Tuesday morning was all about play at Peachester State School, with our annual open invitation Under 8s’ Day. This is a great day for younger siblings to come and see how fun big school is and for potential 2019 prep students (and parents) to come and have some fun. We were very happy to welcome all our new visitors with messy and engaging play stations set up in the playground. Our older students did us proud by caring for and playing with our young visitors. The older school children’s nurturing interaction with the younger grades is something that we are proud of at our small school.

Contributed by Tanya Searle A/Master Teacher Curriculum Coordinator Four Beerwah State School students, Amelia, Kirra, Macey and Ryan, recently attended the Readers’ Cup at Immanuel Lutheran College. The students, also known as ‘A Novel Bunch’, originally formed a book club in Term 1 and their dedication led to an entry in the Readers’ Cup. To be in the Readers' Cup, the students needed to read five books each in five weeks, taking detailed notes, then giving up their lunch times to engage in rigorous discussions about the texts. Across the Sunshine Coast there were 29 schools that competed in the Readers’ Cup, where students were asked 25 questions requiring intricate details about each text. ‘A Novel Bunch’ put in a tremendous effort and came third in their heat. ‘A Novel Bunch’ – Kirra, Amelia, Macey and Ryan

Vacation Care fun Book in now for Vacation Care Fun at Glass House Early Education Centre. The July school holidays are just around the corner and now is a great time to lock in some vacation care fun for your ‘Schoolie’. Ange and the team at Glass House Early Education Centre have put their thinking caps on and have just released a jam-packed program for their ‘Schoolies’ with a heap of awesome activities, cool and creative crafts, boredom busting excursions, local adventures and more! There will be heaps to keep school aged children happily entertained, and many of the activities have been planned using feedback from the children about what type of activities they would most enjoy. For parents using the vacation care at the Centre for the first time, there is a convenient online enrolment form making the booking process super easy. Week One commences July 2 and will kick off with work creating the ‘Schoolies’ garden and the commencement of a special ‘project’ using recycled paper. Tuesday will involve a visit to join other vacation care groups and participate in a ‘colour fun run’. Wednesday will get super crafty with a day making cool creative pieces such as dream catchers (including special unicorn dream catchers), wind chimes and special keepsakes for home.
Thursday the group will head to Mount Tibrogargan for a lovely bushwalk and picnic and Friday will be the always popular messy play day. Week Two starts on Monday July 9 with a mixed science and art day … who knows what wonderful creations can be made when you mix the two! Tuesday involves an excursion to Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge on the Centre Bus. This will be a lovely way for the schoolies to take the donations that have been collected at the centre and meet the volunteers and some of the rescue animals first hand that will benefit from the collection. Strawberry Fields will be forever, as Wednesday the children will be off to the Glenview strawberry farm to pick (and sample!) strawberries. An art incursion, similar to the hugely popular ‘Sand Wizards’ that came last holidays, is on Thursday and Friday will be ‘Master Chef’ day – so bring a big appetite! Vacation care offers a great range of activities, excursions and kid focussed fun and the activities can appeal to the kids of stay at home as well as working families guaranteed to keep boredom at bay. Most activities are included in the daily fees and CCB discounts are
available for activities which may incur additional costs. ‘Schoolies’ care is also available throughout the term. There is a homework club, and the Centre has its own dedicated bus and long serving bus driver. Before and after school care is available during term time from 6.30am until 6.30pm. The ‘Schoolies room’ has a great bunch of friendly local kids and localised school drop off and afternoon pickup is available for Beerburrum, Beerwah and Glass House State Schools as well as Glasshouse Christian College. The Centre, at 2 Page Street Glass House Mountains, is open from 6.30am-6.30pm, and for more details contact Ange on 5438 7311 or email GlassHouse@qccs.com.au.

Keeping the kids entertained One of the other important parts of a successful road trip is being prepared with some entertaining games for both the big and little kids while you’re travelling. Brownie has chosen a couple of his favourites as suggestions and, after seeing how well the Australians are going in the cricket at the moment, this might be a good way to take your mind off the real thing. Car cricket This game is suitable for all ages but younger children may need help adding up. Each person in the car takes a turn batting. To score, you add up the value of the vehicles passing in the opposite direction. Scores are: Cars = 1 run Cars with a trailer = 2 runs Bus or truck = 4 runs (a boundary) Semi-trailer = 6 runs

The batter continues to score until a red car passes, in which case they are out. The next batter takes the crease. The rules are very flexible and it’s lots of fun especially when everyone gets involved looking ahead for red cars. If you want to use a different scoring, you could try: car 1 run, ute 2, truck 3, caravan 4, bus 6 and motorbike OUT!) Wheel of Fortune Distribute the numbers 1 to 10 to the occupants of the car, and these numbers are then written in chalk on a tyre, at spaced intervals. Each time you stop, look to see whose number is nearest to the road surface. The person whose number it is wins a reward (like sitting in the front for a while, or some tasty chocolate).

AUTO CARE A big thumbs up for Barry and the team!
D & F Auto Care are absolutely first class. We already had our regular cars serviced through them and found them conscientious and their prices very fair. Then I had an incident with my beloved Birkin Clubman, and it involved some amazing work by the team of motoring enthusiasts at D & F Auto Care. It was a major joy to find someone with the passion and skills to undertake the work. It is rare to find someone who would work to such high standards – even sourcing parts from South Africa and the UK to get it right. It’s a wonderful outcome to have my car not only back on the road, but with such a skilled rebuild.”

If you go for a serious drive this winter, here are some safety tips to consider: with Andre Mostert from Beerwah Mechanical Services 1. Prepare yourself and your car The most important thing you can do before any trip is get a good night’s sleep before your journey, but even more so when you are travelling long distances. Take short breaks every two hours to improve concentration and have plenty of water on hand to stay refreshed. 2. Be mindful of stopping distances Always leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front at all times, particularly when trucks, buses or people towing trailers or caravans are ahead of you. These vehicles usually need more time to stop. You should also consider the weather conditions as stopping in the rain, in wet weather or on icy roads requires much more 4. Fogging up? time. This might seem like a no brainer but many 3. Up the pressure Regularly checking your tyre pressure is important people head off on drives with either foggy windows, too much gear in their car or other because low tyre pressure increases the chances things blocking the windows. If the morning is of a blow-out dramatically. frosty, run the demister for a bit before heading off to clear the frost. 5. Warning! Just so you know, the warning lights on your car’s dashboard are there for a reason. They’re not a guide and ignoring them is a pretty big safety BEERWAH MECHANICAL SERVICES (logo) risk. If one comes on, it’s best to stop the car and take a note of which warning light has come on. It’s always a good idea to keep your car's manual in the glove box to refer to when needed.

A life of service for the hearing impaired Local independent audiometrist David Hine has dedicated much of his life to providing hearing services to the hard of hearing. For thirty years he worked for large hearing aid companies and later in his own business assessing hearing losses, and when needed, fitting hearing aids. Most of these years he worked in outback towns in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland. Retiring from business in 2009 he then decided to establish a free hearing service in Nepal. Research prior to this venture revealed that assistance for the hard of hearing was almost non-existent in Nepal. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in Asia and few could afford the high cost of hearing aids. With the help of two local charity groups keen to support the project a clinic was set up in a children’s home in the central town of Pokhara. Assisted by his partner Valerie they interviewed and employed local staff to be trained in basic audiometry and practice management. Recycled hearing aids were sourced and donated by colleagues in Australia. Public notices placed in
the Pokhara newspapers offering free services attracted a rush of people seeking help. The temporary clinic was found to be too small and noisy. A five-year lease was taken over a large two-storey building with the clinic operating on the ground floor while accommodation for visitors was provided above. Volunteer audiologists from Australia, the UK, New Zealand and Germany spent time at the clinic to help in management and staff training. Over the next six years, more than fifteen
thousand people were given assistance dealing with conditions such as ear infections and ear canal blockages, with some 3,000 people fitted with hearing aids. These included many seen in remote rural communities when the clinic staff loaded jeeps, generators and test equipment and travelled over treacherous roads to set up clinics in health posts and schools. David was present at the Pokhara clinic on Anzac Day 2015 when Nepal was struck by a series of devastating earthquakes. More than 8,000 lives were lost and millions of Nepalese left homeless.
He joined local business friends in Pokhara to raise funds and send emergency food, clothing and medicines to hard hit rural communities. Although Pokhara was spared from much damage it was two months before the clinic doors were re-opened. It was later in this year that David was approached by an international group of ear, nose and throat surgeons who were building a ‘Hearing Hospital’ in Pokhara. They suggested that he could merge his audiology clinic and staff within the hospital. This was accomplished and the hospital is now fully functional and is highly regarded in Asia as a model of excellence. Although no longer a participant, David still provides support where he can. After a two-year break David and Valerie have now commenced their own home-based business serving the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. With low overheads and the flexible working hours they are able to offer affordable hearing aids to those unable to receive government assistance. They are also keen to introduce a recently developed Tinnitus relief program developed in Denmark.
Affordable Hearing Aids Serving the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland independent Audiometrist David Hine is able to offer moderately priced hearing aids for those who are unable to receive free government support. Cappriccio’s Italian Restaurant
Sometimes in life someone shares with you a great piece of wisdom that you think, ah if only I could live my life that way! Well recently Brownie reminded me about a friend we used to work with who always started his evening meal with dessert. His reasoning was that if anything happened to him during dinner he didn’t want to miss out on the best bit. So I kept it in mind when I knew we were coming to Cappriccio’s this week for our write up, knowing that generally, because of the hearty meals and generous servings at Cappriccio’s we usually don’t manage to fit in dessert. So this week we decided to make up for lost time and here are a selection of photos to show off just how great both their traditional Italian and nontraditional tasty offers are on their menu.

Should you invest regionally? With house prices in Sydney, Melbourne and other metropolitan areas nearing record highs, it’s tempting to look further afield. Buying a home regionally can be a good option for first home buyers, keen to break into the market. Regional areas can also be a good place to purchase your investment property. Market factors, combined with improvements to infrastructure in regional areas make buying regionally an attractive option. Recent CoreLogic data found that parts of regional Australia foster a 30
healthy market. The biggest growth in house prices in the recent quarter was in Geelong, Victoria. The NSW Illawarra region, south of Sydney, had the largest growth of unit values. Market growth was also strong in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, while the Richmond-Tweed area recorded the largest jump in rental rates in 2017. Rental returns are affected by supply and demand. Areas with fast construction growth tend to have moderate rental returns, compared to areas with fast population growth and limited housing supply.
According to recent CoreLogic data, the highest rental yield in regional NSW is Far West and Orana. In Victoria, the highest rental yield is in the North West, followed by Shepparton. In Queensland, the Queensland Outback offers the highest rental yield. Market trends change. But if you are considering a regional investment, look at future growth and expansion in the area. Improved transport connections, increased infastructure and upgraded highways are all signs at growth that can positively affect house prices.
If you are considering a rural investment or your first home, book a chat with Teresa Harrison to work out your home investment options and to identify if this kind of investment meets your requirements.

At the Show What a great Maleny Show last weekend. I spent a fair bit of time looking through the plants, flowers and produce sections. Here’s a selection of the entries. Supervising steward Trevor Carbery (pictured below) was impressed with the quality of the produce, but wanted people to know that for next year’s Show, anyone can enter their garden produce… it’s not just for the professionals. This year, I was particularly impressed with the quality of the camellias on show… it’s a good sign for the camellia displays at the Gardening on the Edge open gardens this coming weekend and the Open Day at Kellyfield Camellias at the end of the month.

Healthy bladder and bowel
It is an awkward but essential conversation. One in four people over the age of 15 live with some form of incontinence. Luckily, it can be prevented, cured or better managed at any stage of life. Join Rae Plush from the Continence Foundation of Australia and Craig, a local Men’s Health physiotherapist, at the Maleny library on Thursday June 28 at 1pm for a fun and informative session filled with useful tips to help you stay healthy on the inside. Learn how good habits can keep you in good shape. Take away easy pelvic floor exercises to help you tone up at home. Attendance is free, however bookings are essential. Phone 5475 8989. CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.
Ps Aaron Jackson Church on the Rise Beerwah
Time in vs Timing We all live in the realm of time. And yet a common phrase we either hear or say is, "I'm time poor or I don't have enough time.” And yet we all get the same amount of hours in a day. The same time as a brain surgeon or the prime minister. What can we do to make better use of our time? Someone once said, "Don't count the days, make the days count.” It's important that we look for ways to improve our quality of life and this can be achieved through using our time in sync with the things we value. When it comes to investments there is an old adage that suggests success on the stock market is about time in rather than timing. I think this is true of how we live our lives. We want to maximise the investment of our time, in our relationships and workplace, also in our recreation.
God calls us to a relationship with Him, not based on timing (only calling on Him when we need help) but a day by day, time-in experience. God is interested in every detail of our lives. Talk to Him the same way you talk to a friend about all that matters to you. Read His Word (the Bible) and allow the words you read to breathe wisdom into your situation. Time in, which is all about valuing our time and the time we have, needs to be invested wisely so that it adds value to the life we live. Living with a time-in attitude brings with it richness to life that will overflow into all areas of your life.

Music to tap your feet to
If you enjoy a musical that gets your toes tapping along to the tunes, then the upcoming performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Iolanthe’ is for you. Arthur Sullivan was always noted for his catchy tunes, but in Maleny Singers’ production of ‘Iolanthe’ you will hear him at his best. From the commanding splendour of the March of the Peers, to the foot tapping dance rhythms of the Finale, the musical ride is a joyous one all the way through. With the talents of the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra to back the excellent voices of the Singers, this show is indeed a musical treat for the senses. ‘Iolanthe’ will be on at the Maleny Community Centre on June 16, 17, 23 and 24, tickets from Trybooking.com or the Maleny Information Centre.

Never one to shy away from complex contemporary issues, respected Finnish writer/director/ producer Aki Kaurismaki brings us ‘The Other Side of Hope’, a "clear-eyed response" to the current refugee crisis in Europe. Set in Helsinki, this drama-comedy deals with an unlikely relationship between former travelling shirt salesman Waldemar Wikstrom (Sakari Kuosmanen) and Syrian asylum seeker, Khaled (Sherwan Haji). Waldemar has left his alcoholic wife, sold his merchandise and gambled the profits. With his winnings from a poker game, he buys an unprofitable restaurant, convinced he can turn it into a successful venture. As he is leaving the restaurant one night, he encounters the homeless Khaled sleeping beside the bins. After an unpromising start to the friendship, Waldemar offers the refugee a job in his restaurant and eventually helps him find his sister, from whom he was separated during their escape from Syria. This could well be a bleak film, but Kaurismaki's skill at handling a tale involving ordinary people battling in difficult circumstances ensures that the overall message is one of hope. As David Stratton says, Kaurismaki is a "most optimistic film maker". His minimalist use of humour delivers a film both funny and poignant. This is a contemporary film which explores universal themes about the ties that bind us as human beings and demonstrates that courage and compassion are sometimes found in unexpected places. When: Saturday June 9 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Dinner from 6pm-7pm catered by Spaghetti Junction; tea/coffee and homemade slices stand; and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm. Running time 1hr 40 mins Cost: $13 adults (non-members), $8 students with ID, and children under 16, $5. Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails flew to Kawana to play against the Kawana Kool Kats but unfortunately we did not come home with a win. The score was 46-23. Thanks to players Gerry, Janet, Christine and Cynthia. Whistlers played at Caloundra, against Racquets. It was a bit windy but nice weather for tennis. And we had lots of rallies and had few tie break sets. We won the right points and that brought home a good win. Score was 45-26 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. In beautiful weather conditions at Witta the Wildcats fought hard but were just short at the end of the day. Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Jenie went down 39-31. Another close one. Wompoos went down to Gympie 5 sets to 7 sets on a windy day at Gympie. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker A good group practice was held on Saturday morning when Vince Carbery, Wendy Whitby and Bev Sockhill were joined by Stuart Craig and an unerringly accurate Ted Gardner. Congratulations to Donna, who played in the CAQ Queensland Women’s Singles Championship on the weekend. It was a friendly tournament played in good conditions with only a little rain. Donna played very well against a strong field, taking many good players to the wire. Her game against Kathleen Colclough, in which she lost 17-18, was decided after time. Donna finished seventh, about midway through the field, having won three and lost three. Great result, and well done.
On Thursday Helen Andrews and Wendy played Bev. Bev won 7-6. Kath Phillips 10 defeated Ken Barker 8. We are having our 25th birthday party on Saturday July 21 and anyone who has been a member of the club since its inception is welcome to come. If you have stories or photos please contact Priscilla. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Wednesday night was the big night of finals, with the excitement generated by the possibility of most teams being able to win one of the two possible trophies – one being more coveted than the other. Some teams changed tactics mid-season and tried harder for the wooden spoon. Miles Allen couldn't understand the form lapse of Mobile Kingdom. He also noted the Young Ones, who battled the odds of new ones with being a two in triples with various fill in players, but were very solid in their form. Dennis Coffey has sought out some of the finest in north Maleny to get a real band of bowlers from that area. However, they were unable to repeat their trophy winning form, but certainly their efforts with the beers, barbie and bowls were much appreciated. They are a great group around the club. The Tutors, a fine group, won a trophy – their prize was a spoon and warm welcome by the bar staff to celebrate with our finest. Some players don’t come along for competition and points. To win a trophy of any sort you must have a plan, be uncommitted to it and hope others stuff up – well, this appeared to be the plan for the Handels and it worked a treat. They have now become repeat winners. This could be the beginning of a run for this team, like Queensland in the State of Origin. Mentioning State of Origin, we will be bowling earlier this week so we can all watch it after the real game. Thank you all for a great season of Wednesday night fun. Friday was a big day in Maleny, with a full rink of bowlers playing Scroungers. Possibly it has been our biggest crowd yet. Great to see the new bowlers score many of the prizes. What a bunch of new recruits we have at MBC. Well done to Judith Lees who showed her skills on the green as a complement to her bar skills. Dave Coffey showed great form in winning convincingly in his first outing at Scroungers. Not to be outdone, Steve Ellett got into the winner’s circle beating a couple of our regular winners. It was noted that team Kapetanic had good wins. Well done, John and Sandra.

Just for Laughs The canny Scotsman
There was a Scottish painter named Smokey MacGregor who was very interested in making a penny where he could, so he often thinned down his paint to make it go a wee bit further. As it happened, he got away with this for some time. Eventually the local church decided to do a big restoration job on the outside of one of their biggest buildings. Smokey put in a bid and because his price was so low, he got the job. So he set about erecting the scaffolding and setting up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry to say, thinning it down with turpentine. Well, Smokey was up on the scaffolding, painting
Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 You may remember the famous date of ‘D-day 6th June’ – this may apply to your sign this week and for the whole month ahead. Your ruler, Mars, transits Aquarius emphasising your hopes and dreams, and common causes. So the “beaches” you may land on may in fact be with someone in hospital who needs your comforting presence. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With winter approaching you will look forward to enjoyable activities within your warm home, especially with loved ones. With the Sun and Mercury in Gemini for the first three weeks, communication with your friends will be discussing money and relationships. Money matters are best solved with a favourite partner and family closeness. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 With Mercury, your ruling inquisitive planet, starting this month in the intellectual sign of Gemini, it will be amplified by the New Moon in your sign mid-month. This means spending time thinking about what you want and what you need. Write down a new personal plan or project and watch how it is amplified by Venus when it enters sign of Leo. CANCER June 24 – July 22 The month starts on a sweet note for you with the very good aspect of Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces. Adding your water sign to the former two, indicates a fabulous week of emotional intelligence and intellectual brainstorming at a high rate as your confidence and creativity is boosted to new heights. Accept special invitations.

away, the job nearly completed, when suddenly there was a horrendous clap of thunder, the sky opened, and the rain poured down, washing the thinned paint from all over the church and knocking Smokey clear off the scaffold to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded by tell-tale puddles of the thinned and useless paint. Smokey was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty, so he got down on his knees and cried, "Oh, God, oh, God, forgive me. What should I do?" And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke, "Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!" Contributed by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

LEO July 23 – August 22 With the Sun and Mercury now moving through the sign of Gemini, your intelligent activity is amplified so that if you had the chance to make speeches the power of your words is amplified by the New Moon midmonth. A very good time to announce a goal and revitalise your social circle. Perhaps you should write for a communal cause now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Mercury is your ruling planet and starts the month in Gemini along with the power of the Sun and the New Moon, also in Gemini, mid-month. This probably means you press on ambitiously via the spoken or written word. That includes emails these days. You will have a lot to express in writing proposals, resumes, or business presentations. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 As the winter time moves into full force you will look forward to enjoyable activities in warm surroundings with loved ones. As the power of Gemini is working through the Sun and Mercury for the first three weeks, there are communications of all kinds. There may be bookings to travel to a distant country on your mind, but difficulties arise. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 With the powerful and expanding planet Jupiter in your sign, in harmonious aspects to the planets Venus and Neptune, you should find yourself floating along on beautiful energies of love, travel and adventure. After the New Moon on the 14th you are revising a will or insurance matter. There could be a change on the work front. Warm feelings.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 A grand relationship is in the development stage. Perhaps it is time to act on serious commitments. Relationships will be anything but dull! And you feel as if you are on a roller coaster of feelings and interactions. Some of your time has to attend to resources or money matters. There is something about personal possessions that mean a lot. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The prime planet motivator is Mars and, now that is moving through the sign of Aquarius, it is in your sector of financial affairs. Take note that by the end of June Mars will retrograde, so any investments you contemplate now will require total re-examination next month. Enjoy every blissful moment of unity with a loved one, since patience is tested. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This month of June starts on a winning note. Lively interactions between the planets continually delight you and inspire a decision with a fresh perspective during a tough conversation. Glowing benefits pour into you from excellent relationships. Plus, dynamo Mars being in your sign makes you busy. Make a recreational plan. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The month starts beautifully for you as Venus trines Neptune and Jupiter in the water signs holding joy, emotional security, good fortune, and even true love! The Sun in Mercury in the sign of Gemini gives a lively family influence and helps make a restful relaxation zone. Don’t compromise wellbeing, wrap yourself in the luxury of emotional celebrations.

Dental Excel.... Family Dentist The Dental Excel dental practice has been serving the Beerwah and hinterland community for over 20 years. The practice was started by Dr Jeff Cox some six years prior to this and then purchased by Dr David Marley when he emigrated from the UK in 1997. Dental Excel has grown since then but still aims to provide the best and most appropriate treatment for each and every patient who trusts us with their dental care.
It is becoming more and more obvious that good dental health is extremely important to general health with more general health conditions associated with poor dental health. All general dentistry such as white fillings, hygiene, root canal therapy, crowns and bridges are routine treatments for the dentists at Dental Excel.
Implants
Orthodontics
David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.
Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.
Dentures
Bleaching
Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also that dentures provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.
Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.
Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.
Cosmetic
Payment Plan
For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.
Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
