I
n the Sunday Mail magazine, I love reading the interview they do each where were the person is asked a serious of light hearted questions, things like what is your secret talent, weirdest place you have ever been recognised etc. But after an experience I had last week – I think I could suggest a new question about the strangest experience you have had when someone recognised you. I ducked into Woolworths at Chancellor Park last Thursday to pick up some batteries for my camera – when I went into the store I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the staff had for totally embracing the Halloween dressing for the day.

Hi Everyone
So when this rather ghoulishly looking zombie creature was serving me at the checkout I was a little freaked out when she said “That’s $10.95 Lea”. Lucky it was the middle of the afternoon and we were in a brightly lit shop or the fact that a zombie knew my name might have bothered me a bit! But thankfully the zombie pointed out that she lived at Peachester and read the paper and I have to say she was very nice (for a zombie) … it is always great to have a chat to readers even ones who might freak you out if you met them in a dark alley. Hope you all enjoyed your Halloween too!

Glass House Rocked By Lea Parkes
The day last Saturday at the Glasshouse Sports Club, with awesome weather, great music talent, excellent food, and plenty of enthusiastic volunteers, showed the rest of the community what a professional event they could run. This was their first ‘Glasshouse Festival’ which saw the grounds of the sports club totally rocking – they brought together a full day of live music which was pretty ‘cruisey’ during the day and then stepped up a notch when the sun went down. One of the highlights off the main stage were the Flair Action Riders ... they were excellent. They didn’t seem to have a massive space so it was really surprising they were able to pull off some really incredible manoeuvres which totally impressed the crowds. The setup was great which meant it was all really easy for festival goers. With the sun beaming down, the ample undercover seating guaranteed total comfort and a place to chill out. The Sports Club President Ken Fullerton said the day went off really smoothly thanks go to everyone involved they all put in a great effort. "There are always going to be challenges doing an event of this size, but we will definitely be going
www.gcnews.com.au
The night time bands stepped the festival up a notch ahead with a bigger and better event in 2014, we will just need to work out the best timing and look at what things can be improved for next year." The Festival co-ordinator Paul Holden said while the numbers through the gates weren’t as high as we had hoped for a first time event we have really created a great platform for the future. “The team of people that came to together on the day including technical people, the volunteers, performers and in particular the Club President, Ken Fullerton and Club Manger, Kylie Cherry were just awesome, creating a really professional event that everyone can be proud off,” he said. Sports Club Manager, Kylie Cherry, said they were disappointed that the Wow Balls that had promoted as a drawcard for the kids, weren’t able to make it on the day – the truck carrying them up from south of Brisbane blew it’s engine. “However at short notice we were able to bring in some other activities including Velcro wall jumping, combat arena and a Cars adventure slide which were popular with the crowds” she said.

Beerwah MARKET NEWS: For sellers, the key is meeting market expectations by setting realistic prices. Too often, sellers see rising prices but don’t take account of the local market. They set a price way above what buyers will pay, which only serves to frighten them away. While supply is still relatively short, there is still strong competition for quality properties. The best advice for home sellers is to secure the services of a reputable, trustworthy real estate agent who will guide them through the process, including what price to set and how best to prepare their property for sale.

Beerwah Masterplan – growing a bright future
Beerwah
Last Thursday evening, staff from Sunshine Coast Council presented the long awaited draft Beerwah Public Domain Masterplan to an enthusiastic crowd at the Beerwah RSL club. The Masterplan evolved from community feedback and suggestions given during the Beerwah Place + consultation process which has been running for the past two years. Local Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski says that the plan is a blueprint for the future of Beerwah’s public spaces. “Our region will be where 70% of the growth will be occurring in the Sunshine Coast within the timeframe of this Masterplan. “This document will help shape our town’s future as we grow and respond to the large developments happening around us,” he said. Around 40 locals at the meeting heard that the Masterplan aims to establish a ‘look and feel’ for Beerwah’s streets and open spaces. The plan covers the areas from Turner Park across Simpson Street and down Mawhinney Street. Some of the main objectives include improving the connectivity for pedestrian traffic across and between the business centres; reinvigorating Turner park as an ‘events central’; returning Simpson Street to being the primary shopping
precinct; and promoting Mawhinney Street to be an improved local commercial zone. Two interesting possibilities identified in the plan are the establishment of community productive gardens at the far end of Turner Street and supporting the possible development of a ‘farmers market’ in the vicinity of the Coochin Creek CoOp. Also, Council is negotiating with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to see if they will relinquish their ownership over the area of grass to the south of the CWA Hall on Simpson Street, so it can be utilised as part of the future ‘town square’. During the discussions, the group made a number of positive proposals for Council to consider, including improved signage, speed limits in Simpson Street, and car parking at the Library and Turner Park. Council is asking for feedback on the Masterplan, with the full document available on their website and at the Beerwah Library. “Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far and I invite you to have your say on the Masterplan,” said Cr Baberowski. “If you think there are important amendments or omissions this is your chance to let us know.” The deadline for comments is Friday November 22.

Disaster preparedness it’s up to you Glass House Mountains local Toni Hutchinson is passionate about Disaster Preparedness. After more than a decade working in both Federal and local government roles in that area, she and business partner Jesse Wojtala have set up a consultancy Advance Disaster Preparedness and Safety to help train business and community on the vital aspects of disaster preparedness. Toni said if they have learned one thing during the recent years of ‘summers of disasters’ it's that when things get really disastrous the emergency services will never be able to respond to everyone immediately and sometimes not even quickly. “So, when the ‘Ship Hits the Sand’ the odds are we are going to have to cope for ourselves for some time - sometimes for some days,” Toni said. Being ‘ready’ or ‘prepared’ is a way of thinking, as well as a kit or a plan. For many of us, in particular the older members of our community who lived through wars, grew up with cyclones, bushfires etc, may just see it as common sense, however today most of us need to do some planning. “If you have to evacuate, what are the things that are important for you – food, water, etc, dry clothes, medicine, food and water containers for animals, baby photos, wedding photos, qualifications, sports trophies? “Or if following a weather incident, you may not be able to leave your property and you are forced
Tahlia Nolan with Jesse Wojtala discussing emergency kits at Tanawah Hay Shed to ‘shelter-in-place’ in your home. Think about what you might need for a few days – medicine, food, water, torches, radio, batteries, pet food, even games to play. “If you are a smoker, is this really the time to go through nicotine withdrawal? Whatever you might want to keep yourselves well and comfortable during the time needs to be included in your kit,” Toni said. Jesse said they were pleased to read recently the suggestion from SES that people copy their important documents to USBs, etc, so in an emergency they have access to important information.

“Ironically this National Strategy was an initiative of Toni’s when she was employed in local government,” Jesse said. While working for the Commonwealth Government during the 2011 floods, Toni became aware that many people had lost all their ID, insurance papers, vehicle registrations, drivers licenses, and medical information which added a whole other layer of frustration for them in their situation. Toni said they had seen a little trick that Jacqui a community worker from Redcliffe was doing. Then with some tweaking we worked with a promotional company to create a variety of USBs suitable for use in emergencies – they can be strapped onto your arm, attached to a bag, or worn on a lanyard around the neck, she said. They are now also pre-loaded with guides on being prepared, on what to do in a disaster and have links to weather and disaster websites. Of course – these are not the answers to all the problems which can happen, and to use the preloaded information they require some access to a computer, to power, or to a computer at an evacuation centre etc. However, for someone whose home is completely destroyed having these documents can make their recovery phase much easier. If you would like to learn more or to meet Toni and Jesse they will be holding a free Disaster Preparedness community display at the Tanawha Hay Shed during their Christmas ‘Trading Day’ on Saturday, December 7 at 186 Glenmount Road, Tanawha.

Top effort girls
By Lea Parkes
Over the past few months, GCNews has included a number of stories about the three enthusiastic local girls, Tamika Milgate, Kerri Park and Tiffany Cook who set themselves a task of fundraising for Breast Cancer earlier in the year. The girls recently completed their mammoth physical fundraising challenge of walking 60kms from Beerwah to Caloundra and back again in one day. It was a huge day; they left Beerwah Discount Tyres and Batteries at 3.30am and arrived back at the Beerwah Hotel at 4.39pm. Their efforts on the day and through the numerous fundraising Kerry, Tiffany and Tamika events (including a Faulty Towers night at the Beerwah RSL and a fun night of Bogan Bingo at the Glasshouse Sports Club) paid off as they raised a massive $17,223.00, which was quite a bit more than their goal of $15,000.00. Kerri had made a pledge that if they raised $15,000.00 that she would shave her head – which the next day she went ahead with, and she looks great! Tamika, Kerri and Tiffany would like to thank everyone for their donations and support in achieving the results they did. Tamika said in particular we would like to say a big thank you to the Beerwah Hotel for letting them finish our walk there and for the donation they gave.

Traffic signals delivered for Landsborough Motorists travelling along Steve Irwin Way can now enjoy a safer journey with the $1.5 million upgrade of the intersection located at Hardwood Road, Railway Street, and Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough, now complete. It comes after Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle rallied with residents and liaised directly with the Transport Minister and local Main Roads department to fast-track the installation of traffic signals at the intersection following safety concerns from residents. Mr McArdle said the completion of the upgrade was a real win for Landsborough residents. "I am pleased to see the traffic signals now operating at what was once a notoriously dangerous intersection," Mr McArdle said. "While sadly we cannot change the outcome of past accidents at this intersection, the safety of the thousands of motorists who travel along Steve Irwin Way will be greatly improved. "I would like to thank Main Roads for their assistance in this important project and also motorists for their patience during construction," he said. The upgrade was completed as part of the State Government's Safer Roads Sooner program which included: • The installation of traffic signals with pedestrian facilities • Minor road widening with kerb realignment • Upgraded road lighting • Drainage works Unfortunately, motorists will still need to take extreme care when negotiating the Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection at Glass House Mountains into the unforeseeable future. Although Main Roads have acknowledged the risks that motorists must negotiate when using this intersection, they have refused to allocate the urgently needed funding under the Safer Roads Sooner program.

Business taking action for change The 2012 / 2013 financial year was definitely a tough one for the businesses in our local community, and it saw quite a few businesses in the central business area of Beerwah close their doors. This was due to the combined effect of the global financial crisis and the impact that Beerwah businesses had felt as a result of the Beerwah overpass being put in. The overpass cut the town in two, which basically meant traffic was bypassing the business centre, coupled with the on-going challenge of poor and inadequate signage directing people into the town really took its toll. Daniel Moodie and Tara Smithyman of Total Microsystems could see that everyone was doing it pretty tough. There was a really high level of frustration and negativity being expressed by local traders. Tara said while she understood how everyone was feeling, she was frustrated that there seemed to be a lot of complaining but no real action undertaken to improve the situation. With the support of a number of other local business people and members of the ‘think tank’ with Lisa Sauer from Top Gun Paint and Panel, Ken Bannister from Subway and Cr Baberowski I decided to take the lead in developing a ‘buy local’ campaign for Beerwah, she said. Daniel added that with Tara’s skills and strengths and the talents we have in our team, Tara and I decided to really dedicate ourselves to creating a concept and materials that could be used by all of the businesses in Beerwah at no or minimal cost.

Tara Smithyman and Daniel Moodie from Total Microsystems With the encouragement of Bob McLean our Chamber of Commerce President, Tara took on the role of the PR Officer for the Chamber and the campaign has now expanded into one for the whole community and the 'Shop Local 1st' Glasshouse Country Campaign has been born. The philosophy behind the 'Shop Local 1st' campaign is that we understand you may not be able to source everything locally – but you can at least try to shop local first before venturing elsewhere. While the campaign is being driven initially by the business people – it is really very much something that we need local residents to own, for our townships to stay strong, to employ locals, support community activities and provide the services required. We all need to ‘do our bit’. Along with the promotional material available for businesses to spread the message, there will also be stickers available for residents to show how much they love where they live, and to encourage that local pride – translating it into making sure they shop local ‘first’. To learn more visit www.shoplocalfirst.com.au
Heading the charge With Bob McLean In the lead up to Christmas the chamber is moving ahead in promoting the ‘Shop Local 1st’ campaign. This will be achieved with a $5000.00 promotional commitment from chamber members to develop an awareness. By encouraging local residents in Glasshouse Country to check out the local businesses first before going to all points of the compass or into e-space to make a purchase or commit to obtain a service. You will be surprised how competitive the locals are. The chamber’s promotion, marketing and media partners are heading up this charge. Total Microsystems, as one of these partners, is injecting considerable time and effort into the chamber’s revitalised website and the ‘Shop Local 1st’ campaign. Proprietors Tara and Daniel have designed and produced the banners and stickers that will be distributed to members and other participating businesses. These will be on display throughout Glasshouse Country, please support these businesses. GCNews as the media partner, will also be delivering the message ‘Shop Local 1st’ with regular updates and reminders prompting your awareness to ‘Shop Local 1st’. Every community will not have everything you require, but with a short trip to visit one of the other townships you’ll be surprised by the extra choice you have. Look for the promotional posters and stickers, support the business that support our communities and visit the chamber’s website for more information. If you are not involved, this is your chance. www.glasshousemountains.com.au

The Healthy Guru
Craig and Leanda have now opened their doors at The Healthy Guru. They are happy with their decision to move into the local community and open the store in Beerwah. They are also really pleased with the interest from locals and how welcome they are being made by the community. If you haven’t had a chance to meet Craig, he is passionate about vision guidance, tarot, numerology, and astrology. He enjoys working with people to assist them in creating the lives that they want; he can help those who just aren’t sure how to make it happen. Craig encourages people to intentionally plan out where they want to be, and works with them to create personal goals towards achieving it. He uses Modality Devine Source Enlightenment, which looks at a person’s past patterns which helps establish the behavior that can be holding them back from achieving their goals. Craig and Leanda would also like to encourage locals to attend a ‘Multidimensional Mass Healing Night’ to be held in Landsborough on Saturday,
Business feature November 16 from 7.00pm. It is being delivered by Craig’s mentor Kevin Robb. Craig said in the workshop, through Divine Intervention, Kevin will give those attending the tools to connect to your ‘Divine Overself and Divinity’. Kevin explains that the information he has to give may free you on many levels of existence. The energy healed, clearing and transforming any misguided energies the client may have that are not in line with their Divine Overself. “In effect it’s merging of the soul, heart and Divine Overself into Divinity,” he said. This is a truly empowering workshop not to be missed, with everybody on mass receiving the healing with unconditional love. “Some people have also claimed to feel lighter and say they have had a load taken off them, and that misguided thought patterns vanish following the healings,” Craig said. The workshop will be held at the Landsborough School of Arts Hall, 4 Old Landsborough Road.
Bookings can be made by contacting Kevin on 0406 362 340 or in store at The Healthy Guru, attendance will be an investment of $25.00. To find out more about Kevin check out his website at www.universalhealings.com.au

Santa Claus is coming to Help the Twinnies at Glenview For over 12 years Paula and Bridgette Powers, our local girls known as ‘The Twinnies’ have operated the Pelican and Seabird rescue service from their parents’ rented property, currently this is on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough. Most locals know how dedicated the Twinnies and the entire Powers family are and are also aware of the constant challenge it is for them to cover the financial costs associated with their rescue service. Upon hearing about their financial struggle, Pam Bostock and the marketing team at Glenview Gardens Country Resort wanted to help. Starting on Friday, November 29, and continuing each Friday, Saturday and Sunday night throughout December until Christmas, Santa will be appearing at Glenview Gardens Country Resort at 17 Glenview Road. For a gold coin donation, your kids can visit the big fella from 5.30pm in his decorated Christmas grotto, with 100% of the proceeds from the Santa visits going to these deserving girls, Paula and Bridgette, ‘The Twinnies’. It is Glenview Gardens Country Resort’s way of saying ‘thank-you’ for this great service and ensuring it continues for years to come. Volunteers are always welcome and education
seminars are also available for groups at the twinnies rescue service. For further information, the Twinnies may be contacted on 5439 9995 or phone Glenview Gardens on 5494 5411.

Insurance - friend or foe? Buying insurance is often seen as a necessary evil. In fact, it is one of things that enable us to do what we want to do. Would you buy a $50,000 car or a $500,000 house, let alone invest in a substantial business upgrade, if you knew you had to pay for every cent if something went wrong? As your new face of insurance in the Glasshouse Country area, Reliance Partners is there to help answer your questions, find you the best deal, and be there for you if something bad happens. Reliance Partners knows insurance isn't the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning, but they also know that getting it wrong is the stuff of nightmares. Insurance Brokers are there to help save you from the nightmares. They do the leg work for you, and get excited by the challenge of finding you the best insurance, at the best price, for the minimum amount of effort on your part. Reliance Partners is a member of a substantial Australian owned broking group, who is already trusted with $9.1

million worth of insurance premiums. They are also part of Australia's largest insurance broker group - Steadfast. What does this mean for local business owners? It means not only do you get a personal, local and professional service, but you get access to all the country's leading insurers, who are fighting to give you a better deal. We've heard rumours that some brokers are reluctant to leave their cosy coastal suburbs and head inland to meet Glasshouse Country people face to face. Reliance Partners, through local resident Kim Rodgers, is committed to changing that perception. Kim is an experienced broker, who owns and operates this branch of Reliance Partners. Kim will come and visit you in person, to help make sure you fully understand what the insurance fine print really means to your specific circumstances. Next time you roll your eyes thinking that it is insurance renewal time again, contact Kim at Reliance Partners for a refreshing change. She will make sure you are covered.

Bridgette and Paula Powers from the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue Service at Landsborough are having a working bee on Saturday, November 17 from 8.00am onwards. They are putting out a call to arms for builders, handymen, and labourers to help build a seating area for visitors to the Sanctuary. They also require building materials including tin for the roof (new or used), timber, cement, chairs and tables. Anyone can come along to be a helper as well as make a cash donation at any time. Rock up and give something back to the Twinnies! A delicious lunch will be provided as a thank you.
Contributed by Gweneth Brooks At a recent competition held with other Toastmaster Clubs from Caboolture, Bribie Island and Kilcoy, our own Glasshouse Toastmasters Club Inc won many accolades. Muriel Smith won the Table Topics category (where contestants are all given the same topic and then must speak about it for two minutes.) The contestants who have not spoken are held out of earshot until it is their turn to speak. She was also placed third in her appraisal of a test speech. Christine Magee was runner-up champion in the International Speech. In this category the speech must be of international public speaking standard, the winner moving forward to compete against other winners from PNG to Darwin to Birdsville to Coffs Harbour (known as District 69 in the world listings).

The conductor issuing us tickets
Renate Burnell came third in the humorous section. Congratulations to our members on a very worthy effort from a very small club. We also received the delightful news that our member, Christine Magee has just recently been appointed a civil celebrant and Renate Burnell excelled herself in entertaining a Noosa Retirement complex with all the music, singing and trappings of an authentic October Fest. A delightful morning was experienced by three members who travelled to Bribie Island Library on Monday, October 14 to hear author, Susan Duncan, speak about her books and the passion behind why she gave journalism away and turned to writing. A delightful time has been had by the club, fondly known as ‘The Holidaying Club’ and we are now looking forward to Christmas celebration.
to get going, or his call of ‘tickets please’ and the ‘click of the punch’ as they issued your ticket and especially the jerky movement of the wheels as we rode along the tracks. The etiquette and heritage of tram travel from those not so long ago days was brought to life and delivered in a very informative, human and witty way by two ‘Trammies’ dressed as they were then – Foreign Legion caps and all. The Museum has 25 vehicles and gave us a ride on five, from the 1920’s ‘Matchbox’ open air 10 bench seater which was known as ‘Jumping Jacks’; Tram 99 - the single truck centre aisle tram of the 1930’s - 40’s; to the ones used in the 1960’s which were known as ‘Droppies’ style of the fleet when it all finished in 1968. Most of us would remember this style, Tram Car 341 in their fleet, the icon known as ‘The Brisbane Tram’. The Museum is also a delight of memorabilia and several CD stories of ‘Trams and People’ fit the occasion. It was a super morning – as usual. Probus meet on the second Wednesday of the month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sportsground at 10.00am. New members are always warmly welcomed. Vanessa, from Maleny is really delighted with new solar system Her solar meter is spinning backwards! – meaning that she’s producing more power than she’s using. Vanessa is really reducing her greenhouse impact in the hope that her two young children will have cleaner air, and an acceptable climate so they too can enjoy many years on planet earth. Vanessa Smolders of Maleny, proudly monitors her new Impact Solar System from Bi-Rite Maleny
EAST – WEST facing roofs Vanessa’s house roof faces EAST and WEST, so Ian from 1330 4 SOLAR recommended a special inverter. This inverter is different in that its specifications offer two independent motors to cope with the varying light intensity. This is exactly what is needed to optimise the result from an east – west facing roof line. The really efficient 1300 4 SOLAR system has
already produced more power per day than the brochure states. This means Vanessa will receive a quicker return on her capital cost of the solar than she anticipated. Everybody’s happy! Perhaps you too should call in and discuss your thoughts with Peachester locals Pat and Nerina at Bi-Rite Maleny, or one of the local electricians listed in the advert below.

Queensland leading the way once again with solar installation The report on data for the second three months of 2013, has reported the most volume and greatest growth was, unsurprisingly, in Queensland. We are still showing very strong figures for the State, despite dropping the 44c feed-in-tariff. And why not, Queensland is the Sunshine state. The price of solar has bottomed out. This time last year manufacturing costs hit an all-time low, but costs are once again on the rise. Now is the time to get that solar system on the roof and price-proof yourself against the rising cost of not only the solar system but, the never ending price rises in electricity costs. Have you noticed that you are now being charged for PEAK TIME electricity? So when the demand is at its highest that is when you are paying the most. All the more reason to have a solar system installation now! Give Ian a call and discuss your latest electricity bill and how to start reducing it soon.

Reconnecting and reminiscing It was a wonderful turnout for the Mooloolah Reunion Morning Tea held recently at the Mooloolah Public Hall. With over 180 invited guests, the morning tea was a great opportunity for past and present residents to reconnect and reminisce. Dr Eve Fesl and Mayor Mark Jamieson officially opened the event to a packed hall. With live music, bush poetry and a delicious morning tea, guests were well catered for and the hall was filled with laughter and chatter. Guests came from all over Queensland and many were able to catch up with old friends - some that had not
been seen for many years. As part of the town’s 150 year celebrations, the photography exhibition showcased the history of Mooloolah and its residents. As many of the photos had been contributed from family photo collections, the display provided a unique and personal insight into the rich history of the township. The exhibition also provided an animated talking point for the many guests and visitors that attended throughout the day. A special thank you needs to be given to the Mooloolah Hall Ladies who worked tirelessly throughout the day and to all our sponsors.

A Christmas gift idea needed? Beerwah Writers Group How about BWG children’s book titled ‘Tales for Tots and Tweens’? With the combined efforts of 15 members of our local Beerwah Writers Group, we have produced 37 individual stories for this year’s children’s book, ‘Tales for Tots and Tweens’. These stories will take you on exciting adventures with king penguins on South Georgia Island, a camel ride in Oman, an anaconda in British Guiana and an encounter with an ape in Kenya. There are other stories about ponies, a mouse on holiday, lizards and other mini beasts. Experience the magic of Christmas stories with fairies, wizards, genies, ghosts and goblins, doing what they usually do – entertaining children.
Anne Willet created beautiful illustrations for the cover and individual stories. Eli and Zoey Budd, Maureen Glover, Zabelle Warriner Banner, Zak Cassells and the illusive ‘Cindi’ Moore also contributed delightful illustrations. The books are now on sale for $10.00 at the Beerwah Newsagency. We hope that all children will read happily ever after. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, this is a friendly welcoming group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Morning tea is provided for a small donation. Guests and visitors are welcome. Beerwah Writers Group meets on the second and fourth Friday of each month – 10.00am to 12.00noon at the Beerwah Library Meeting room.

The girls in the Glasshouse Country News office are partial to a takeaway lunch from Pasta d’Vine. It’s not just because they have great food – everyone seems to be able to find something they love on the menu. Recently our group order included vietnamese spring roll, sushi, an open steak sandwich with crispy onion rings, fettuccine with meatballs, chicken quesadilla with guacamole and a gourmet roast pork sandwich. It is hard to believe that they were all available from the one place and most of them were from the lunch specials menu and priced around the $10.00 mark. We all love the mystery of finding out what will be on the special menu as it changes each month. So my tip is if you have a friend you would like to catch up with for lunch, who can be a bit ‘fussy’ then take them to Pasta d’Vine as they are sure to have something to suit them. They are open from 8.30am – 6.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am – 2.00pm on Saturday.
To complement the introduction of their new caterers, James and Anna Solien, Woodford Golf Club has been staging free live music every Friday night from 7.00pm. With a different ‘live act’ each week, the patrons are enjoying the variety, as well as plenty of fresh food ideas. With the live entertainment downstairs, diners can relax and enjoy a peaceful meal upstairs before joining in the fun. It’s the perfect excuse to catch up with friends or family for a good feed and a great night out. You won’t want to miss out on the popular meat tray raffles between 6.00pm – 8.00pm. The club has 14 gaming machines and Keno available, so there’s something to keep everyone happy. Meals are available from 6.00pm, or if you prefer a lunchtime visit, they are open Wednesday – Sunday from 11.00am – 2.00pm. Why not take advantage of their current special on gourmet pies? School News Ready Set Sing!
As the countdown began, Glenview state school students prepared to join thousands of other school students from across Australia to sing one song. Then, on the strike of 11.30am on Thursday, October 31 they sang that one song, with one voice, right alongside other schools whose presentations were being streamed in a live web-cast organised by the Music Council of Australia. Now in its seventh year, the ‘Count Us In’ music collaboration brings together students from all walks of life, offering them a chance to sing a song written specifically for the event. This year the song ‘Keep On’ was written by handpicked, student song-writers and promoted by Timomatic, Darren Percival and Harrison Craig of ‘The Voice’ fame. The message of the song encouraged students to 'keep on' working hard to achieve their dreams. And work hard they did! Students of all ages in the I-Sing choir gave up their precious lunch hours in order to work under the direction of Mrs Chelsea Harry - their music and choral teacher. The end result was a thrill, with the whole school joining them in song. Students once again found a reason to be excited by music, and local News crews were on hand to give their support. Music and song gives us a way to express our thoughts, experiences and passions, and it is with you for life! Clearly these kids are investing in something very special.
Landsborough students go red
This year marks the 10th anniversary since the disappearance of Daniel Morcombe. It is also the 9th anniversary of the National day of action known as ‘Day for Daniel’, which now attracts more than one million participants Australia wide. Day for Daniel aims to educate children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. Landsborough State School joined hundreds of schools Australia wide by participating in this year's Day for Daniel on Friday, October 25. Students were encouraged to dress in red and provide a gold coin donation towards the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. The colour red has become synonymous with the day and its importance to child safety education. Throughout the day, students participated in various safety activities which included reading books, group discussions and watching DVD's relating to child safety issues. Landsborough State School Principal, Kristy Walton, said, "Day for Daniel raises awareness and ensures children are alert and mindful of their safety. It aims to help empower our children to recognise, react and report if they feel something is not right." Landsborough students Peta and Zara wear red in support of Day for Daniel
GCCC bowled over by Jeff Thomson
STOP PRESS: Year 8 is full in 2014 at GCCC
At age 63, Jeff Thomson ‘Thommo’ is recorded as the fastest bowler in the world and that record still remains unbroken. Mr Thomson was the guest speaker at Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Sports Awards Night and he used the opportunity to talk about the tenacity that saw him enter the Guinness Book of Records with a bowling speed of 160.58 km/h. The GCCC students were enthralled by Mr Thomson’s stories but the most excited faces in the audience belonged to the dads and grandads that couldn’t wait to have their photos taken with ‘Thommo’ after the ceremony. Mr Thomson said that seeing all the young students receiving their awards reminded him of when he was a young kid. “The best thing about playing cricket is the fun you have with your mates,” he said. “I can see some of these young students have great sporting careers ahead of them,” he added. “Little Cassidy Ferris has been up to receive awards so many times, she has nearly worn out her shoes!” The most coveted awards on the night were the sportsman and sportswoman of the year. This year that honour was awarded to Ryan Sauer and Ella Mickelson for Secondary and Amity Roser and Beau Howard for Primary. Each year GCCC students continue to improve their personal best and are making a name for themselves and the College in the district and regional scene.

Habitat destruction
The article ‘Say NO to proposed Spaghetti Junction’ published in GCNews on October 23, summarised the disastrous destruction of a wild life habitat of great value. As outlined in the article, this sort of old tree habitat cannot be replaced by planting a few trees somewhere else. Some of the birds, frogs, butterflies and other animals are clearly endangered. Main Roads should be making every effort to consider alternative designs. A brief consideration and inspection by the Department of Transport is not sufficient. I wonder too if sensitive consideration has been given to the effect of this development on the very special Mooloolah Cemetery? For many years the short drive through this small forest has always given me a sense of calm and a feeling of ‘welcome home’. How short sighted it is that preservation of this habitat is not being given a priority over the road. Elaine Wise Mooloolah
What a great day
There was a great response to the invitations for the lunch and fashion parade held at the Glass House Community Hall last Saturday to raise funds for baby Zahlia Violet White. The Sunshine Girls would like to thank everyone who helped to make this day so successful. Special thanks to Lea Parkes who was our fashion parade compere, the gorgeous models, and to those who worked in behind the scenes. It was a great effort raising over $800.00 towards baby Zahlia’s lifestyle improvements. Thank you all for your support. Sue Brumpton Secretary, Sunshine Girls
Over irresponsible dog owners
I live in Clearview Drive Glass House Mountains. I am over the number of irresponsible dog owners who choose not to adequately look after their dogs. I came home today to find one of our chooks (raised by hand) killed by two dogs that continually run loose in our estate in a pack. Our neighbour witnessed the attack and she managed to save one, but it is in a sick condition, and most likely will not survive as well. I can't do much about what happened now, but I CAN put a sign up at the front of our place to ask these same irresponsible dog owners to at least clean up after themselves. Sending feed to those in need
Congratulations to Tracey and Tahlia who are Peachester locals and owners of the Tanawha Hay Shed for their dedicated efforts in supporting the victims of the fires in the Blue Mountains. The girls assisted in collecting food and medical needs for animals affected by the bushfires. Great effort girls and the kind of actions we can all be proud of. Name supplied Glass House Mountains
Re: green waste fees, October 23 GCNews
I have lived in other council jurisdictions like Townsville, Redcliffe, Gold Coast, Mackay and Brisbane where the rating system delivered by council is different, where at those times disposal of rubbish was included in our rates. If you looked at the breakdown in our rates we were paying dearly for the privilege. I understand where the writers of previous letters complaining about council’s charges are coming from, but this is a user pay system. I don't go to the dump often, usually Christmas, and why should I pay for those who choose not to try the avoidance and recycling techniques? We are fortunate to have Community Recycling Inc. operating our local resource recovery centre. This organisation supports our local communities by sponsoring Carols in the Park, Dad's Day Out, Deb Ball, Glasshouse Country Festival, youth activities and many other community activities. Reiki balances the energies in the body, strengthens the immune system, relieves pain, clears toxins, relaxes and reduces stress, strengthens the life force energy, intuition, enhances personal awareness, plus releases blocked or suppressed feelings. Sessions generally last an hour and can take various forms, but most commonly resemble typical bodywork, where the receiver lies clothed on his or her back on a flat surface or massage table. Reiki is a simple procedure, with the practitioner focusing on healing and giving energy to specific areas on the receiver’s body. Placing hands over positions on the body where the organs and endocrine glands reside and the areas that correspond to the chakra centers. To make an appointment phone Leisa on 5439 9813, her clinic is in Landsborough.

Local Music Scene Music Today
with Dr Micheal Whiticker
Micheal lives at Glass House Mountains and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner
Popular music of the Vietnam era
The Glasshouse Musos had a theme for their get togethers this last week and it was Music of the Vietnam era. This was the period - roughly 1962 to 1975, during which the Vietnam War took place. For those who are too young to have been around in those days, Australia was involved in the war with one third of its forces of 60,000 troops being conscripts. This was a bone of contention for many Australians – particularly the youth, but possibly the hardest experience for the troops themselves was the failure of the Australian people to recognise their involvement (many blaming them, rather than politicians, for the war and the way it had been conducted). To this day the experience lingers on for many involved, with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) a sad reminder of the experience many had in that war and have continued to have in the period since. In this situation it is not surprising that most of the memorable songs of the period have a political intent. We heard some of them at the Musos Club with the song made famous by Barry McGuire – ‘Eve Of Destruction’ and John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ performed by two artists, along with Woodstock (Joni Mitchell), ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon’ (Tony Orlando), ‘Blowing in the Wind’ (Bob Dylan) and ‘Six O’clock News’ (Larry Norman). No less political in content were performances of the powerful King Crimson number ‘Epitaph’ or Deep Purple’s ‘A Soldier of Fortune’, by Tommy Leonard or Gary and Cory Josland’s version of ‘Stop, Hey What's That Sound’ (Steve Stills). Australian content from the Vietnam Era included Ronnie Burns’ song for conscript and pop idol Normie Rowe – ‘Smiley’, ‘The Band Played Walzin Matilda’ (Eric Bogle) and a number of Cold Chisel songs, with ‘Khe Sanh’ standing out, and ‘I Was Only 19’ (Redgum), which although written in 1983, refers directly to that war. Many songs have continued to be written about the Vietnam Era and one of the Musos artists – Matty, took the opportunity to write his first song for the occasion, along with Lu Lu Munyard who also performed her recently written original anti-war song – ‘This is the 2nd War’, proving, if nothing else, that creative artists continue to provide a social comment on events which live on, long after the event and news of the day have faded in time. Do have a creative musical month! Michael www.michaelwhiticker.com.au

Acoustic Guitar Spectacular
Fret Music has put together an Acoustic Guitar Spectacular - a series of concerts and workshops in November with Australian touring troubadour Michael Fix and American fingerstyle wizard Richard Gilewitz. The two artists met in 2010 while Richard was on tour in Australia and Tasmania (recording a John Fahey tribute). Eventually their touring schedules crossed paths, resulting in their first joint tour this year. Whether playing solo, or sharing the stage during this tour, these two international artists pull the sparkle from the stars to deliver an enchanting and entertaining event. In addition, Sam Shepherd has been added to the bill for the performance in Maleny on Thursday, November 7, from 7.30pm at the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street. Michael Fix is widely acclaimed as one of the world’s finest acoustic guitarists. He has won three Golden Guitars and numerous other awards in Australia, and tours widely throughout the world, particularly Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. This year he made his first trip to South Africa, where he performed to standing ovations in every venue. Over the past two decades, he’s released 13 albums, together with several singles and EPs, and has established himself globally as a leading performer, appearing at festivals and concert venues across Australia, Europe and Asia. www.gcnews.com.au

His latest release is the evocative Time Lines, featuring a collection of exquisite new pieces, inspired by Michael’s travels over the past few years as well as experiences closer to home, together with unique arrangements of some of the songs that have inspired him over the years. Richard Gilewitz is a powerhouse on the international guitar scene and has toured the world too many times to count. Known as a fingerstyle wizard and raconteur, Richard creates lively journeys topped with laughter and sparkles of mood mastery and wonderment with his use of banjo style picking patterns, classical arpeggios, tapping and harmonics, along with his rhythmic and percussive touch. His tales are spirited stories into the world of a touring musician and his tunes are adventures as their instrumental wanderings reveal surprises with each note. His shows are laced with sounds of acoustic fingerstyle guitar of the Americana and traditional, folk and blues, Spanish and European classical, and somewhere in between as this veteran performer captures a history of fingerstyle guitar. Update on lights at Reed Street
The Glasshouse community have raised with me many times over the years their desire to see improved traffic conditions at the intersection of Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way. As this area is experiencing a growth in population, I understand the road network is increasingly being put under pressure. I can appreciate that traffic signals at this intersection would alleviate some concerns for residents and improve the flow of traffic in and out of the town. I have made my own desire to see this project delivered as soon as financially possible, very clear to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, as I know how valuable this would be for safety outcomes at the intersection. This project will continue to be a priority for me and I will do what I can to get this on the TMR radar as soon as possible.
Glasshouse Country Festival
I recently attended both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Glasshouse Country Festival. I really enjoyed being a part of the festivities including the traditional Hangi during the Maori Business Luncheon and closing ceremony. The festival was by all accounts a great success and it was so wonderful to see our region celebrated in this way. Congratulations to the organisers for supporting our community and for putting together this great festival.
Caring for our Community Grants
I am pleased to announce that community and volunteer groups can now share in almost $1.3 million worth of funding for essential items and equipment. These grants provide a fantastic opportunity for groups to improve facilities and upgrade resources, whether it be to upgrade computer software, safety equipment or even a fridge. The grants close on December 2 so make sure you check online for application and eligibility details – www.communities.qld.gov.au

Know your diabetes risk Let me ask you a question. Do you think you’re at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes? Do you know your risk? Would it surprise you to learn that more than 17,000 people who live on the Sunshine Coast are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes? It’s a pretty alarming figure and one we should probably pay a lot more attention to. The National Diabetes Register tells us that in the past year alone the number of people on the Coast living with diabetes has increased by 8.9 % to 13,294. That figure is predicted to soar to 33,552 in the next 10 years. Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease across the globe and 62 Queenslanders are diagnosed every single day. The Sunshine Coast University Public Hospital will increase its inpatient and outpatient capacity to treat and manage patients with diabetes, but it’s also important we try to reduce our risk now and avoid becoming a statistic. So are you more at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes? You are if: you have a family history, developed diabetes during pregnancy, are over 40, are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, don’t get enough exercise, have high blood pressure, are overweight and have a poor diet. So how can you help reduce the risk? Visit www.diabetesqld.org.au to find out more.
Celebrating our communities I’m really proud to see how well the recent Glasshouse Country Festival came together. It certainly showcased our local talent and celebrated our unique hinterland towns. Did you manage to get along to any of the events? I certainly did and as one of the sponsors of the festival it was good to see people showing their support. It doesn’t have to stop there though, does it? Have you thought about dropping in on our local art galleries? Visiting the markets? How about embracing our natural surroundings and going for a family walk at Ewen Maddock Dam or even up Mt Ngungun? Let’s embrace this truly special place where we live, now and into the future. www.gcnews.com.au

Consider home loan refinancing to regain control of your mortgage After making repayments on your home loan for a period of time, you may begin to feel slightly trapped, claustrophobic and hopeless about the situation in which you find yourself. Taking out a home loan is a huge, lifelong expense, and sometimes the gravity of the commitment can seem a bit much. However, now is not the time to give up! There are options available to help you re-adjust your home loan to suit your needs. This is known as home loan www.gcnews.com.au
refinancing, and can be extremely useful for anyone with a mortgage - regardless of whether you’re a first home buyer or a seasoned property investor. For example, perhaps you want to reduce your repayment amount to become more manageable during times of financial struggle? Or, on the flip side, make your repayment amount bigger to help cut through your remaining balance and get debt-free faster? There are a number of different facilities and changes that can be added, subtracted or changed
when it comes to home loans. After all, the perfect home loan is one that has a competitive interest rate, coupled with manageable repayments and low fees. As your life circumstances change, the home loan you took out may no longer fit the mould of your situation. If this is the case, now could be the perfect time to get in contact with a financial professional, like a mortgage broker, and discuss the options available to you. These experts will be able to outline your current home loan
plan and present a number of possible revisements to help you regain control of your mortgage situation and get back to satisfaction. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Plant of the month
Vanilla Lily (Sowerbaea juncea)
Wallum is a distinct eco-system of sandy coastal soils, low in nutrient, often poorly drained but with a thriving and specialised range of floral species. Wallum land has in the past, been considered ‘useless country’ and hence was drained, filled and covered with housing. Today only a few coastal wallum areas remain. One of the many beautiful wallum species is the Vanilla lily. Once common along the Landsborough-Beerwah road, this small herb disappeared when the road was widened. Vanilla lily has rounded leaves similar to the garden herb chives, and grows to 50 cm in height. The masses of clumped flowers (umbels), may be pink or lavender, and more rarely, white. A very small area of wallum remains in Beerwah next to Woolworths and the overpass. However the best place to see the great range of plants supported by this type of eco-system is to visit Currimundi and take a stroll through Kathleen McArthur Conservation Park.

Get up&Grow with Jade King
Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist Perfect Pollination teacher is passionate about gardening My garden isand bursting at thewho seams! It has been the mostvegetable glorious weather for
productive gardening and the harvest has been abundant. We have had bumper crops of potatoes, zucchini, beans, cucumber, tomatoes and carrots, just to name a few. Whilst the low rainfall has made water a little more precious, it has also reduced the potential incidence of Downey Mildew and root-rot, which can be a major battle when growing zucchini, cucumber and melons ‘cucurbits’. Low pollination rate is another battle that I often encounter when growing these, with some being less successful than others. If you have had trouble with your cucurbits not being pollinated, you will have experienced the excitement of seeing tiny fruit, yet this has soon turned into disappointment when the flower has dropped off and left you with an immature fruit that slowly begins to yellow and die. Over the years I have had many people ask me how to hand pollinate, and most have been surprised at just how simple it is, especially for cucurbits. Hand pollination isn’t just for times of wet and excessive heat that can cause fruit not to set, but it can also help to further increase the rate of successful pollination in general. Rockmelons in particular, I have found, are notorious for low pollination rates, however they respond really well to hand pollination. Steps to hand pollination 1. The best time to pollinate is nice and early in the morning when the flowers are fresh, so prepare to be out and about like the bees first thing. 2. Locate your female and male flowers. This is super easy for cucurbits, as the female is easily identifiable with an immature fruiting body immediately under the flower. Also the stigma in the female flower is quite complex, whilst the single pointy stamen of the male flower is pretty basic. 3. Using a soft paintbrush or cotton bud, carefully gather some of the pollen from the male onto the brush and then transfer this to a female flower, spreading the pollen all over the stigma. 4. Gather pollen from a number of male flowers to increase the success rate. Some people suggest just ripping off the male flower and striping the petals back to reveal the stamen and then use that to pollinate directly, instead of using a brush. Whilst this method works well, it reduces the number of male flowers available. 5. Pollination is complete! Now wait and watch your produce grow. I hope this month sees the eagerly anticipated summer rains come and top up tanks and freshen up the garden. Until next month in Get Up and Grow…

Now I sit me down in school Where praying is against the rule. For this nation under God Finds mention of Him very odd. If Scripture now the class recites It violates the Bill of Rights. And anytime my head I bow Becomes a Federal matter now. Our hair can be purple, orange or green That's no offence, it's a freedom scene. The law is specific, the law's precise Prayer's scene spoken aloud are a serious vice. For praying in a public hall Might offend someone with no faith at all. Contributed by Steve Pitt On Saturday, November 2, Hinterland Boxing Club sent a team of six athletes to the Impact Boxing Academy. Five athletes were matched for bouts. First up saw Jake Molloy box against the classy Theo Rayfield from the Albert Boxing Club in the 38 kg division. Jake boxed the best he has all year being patient, persistent and sticking to the game plan with sharp combinations and good foot work to come away with a well deserved win. Next up Shanoa Russell put in the performance of his career in the 66 kg division. Shanoa was on the front foot from the opening bell pouring punches on his opponent who showed good foot work and boxing skill. Shanoa looked determined and pushed hard all the way to the final bell to come away with his first win. Leroy boxed against Henry Holton a crafty athlete from the Albert Boxing Club in the 60 kg division. Leroy started the bout well applying the skill sets he had been working on in the gym to great effect. The bout seesawed throughout the contest with Leroy making a few mistakes in the last round to go down in a close fight. Next up saw Taylen Pitt in his final bout of the year take a step up in class to box against Nathan Hunt from the strong Bethania boxing club in the 64 kg division. Taylen's opponent’s experience took away Taylen’s timing and range in the first round. Taylen adjusted well in the second round landing good scoring shots. Taylen pushed forward in the final round before going down in a close but deserved decision to his opponent. Taylen didn't look out of place stepping up in class and after having 10 fights this year will now let his body rest before what looks to be a promising 2014. The final HBC athlete was Big Jake Hennessy who stepped up a division to give a local boy a fight in front of his home town. This bout was the toughest fight of Jake's career with both boys landing solid shots in a crowd pleaser. Jake used his jab and foot work to good effect going down in a very close decision. Jake gave away five kilograms for this fight to give the home boy an opportunity to fight in front of his fans, very honourable Jake. Good performance from all the boys. We will now head to Caboolture on November 16 for an open tournament before the State Titles which will be held over three days from November 29. Contributed by Jenny Kelly As this glorious weather continues, our ladies come out to enjoy the course and great company at Beerwah Golf Club. We had 60 players play a Canadian Foursomes for trophies which were generously donated by Flair Jewellery in Beerwah. Continuing to play great golf, and the winners on the day were Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone. Andrea and Cathy have combined very well throughout the year, also winning our Foursomes Championships. They were followed by runners up Monica Dangerfield and Jen Kelly, who also won vouchers to spend at Flair Jewellery. NTP's went to Peggy Broomhall and Brid John on the 2nd, Barb Drury and Di Flint on 5, Lea Garner and Mavis Brimelow on 16 and Jo Evans and Jan Evans took out the 18th. The ball rundown went to 78 3/4 Nett. We are hosting the fellas next week on our Men's Invitation Day, so grab a partner and come out to enjoy this beautiful weather and great course. Until then, stay safe and good golfing. Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone www.gcnews.com.au
Blood, Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
This year saw AFL return to Beerwah State High School in a big way. For the first time ever, the school fielded a senior boy’s team in the regional Josh Drummond Cup as well as a Senior Girls team in one day Brisbane Lions Cup carnival. The highpoint of this resurgence came when local business The Fastener Place, represented by Olga Slater offered to sponsor the school for a new set of guernseys for the students. The school’s P and C also jumped on board and purchased a full set of shorts to compliment the new Guernseys, also pictured. The students did not have to wait long to try on their new gear as the school currently has a mixed team competing in the local Sunshine Coast AFL 9’s competition, where they currently sit on top of the ladder. Beerwah State High School would like to take this opportunity to thank The Fastener Place for their generous support and look forward to a bright

Suncoast Hinterland Swings into Softball
Contributed by Kath Sheehan Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association invites all juniors from the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas to take part in the fun of ‘Swing into Softball’. Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association will host Swing into Softball on Saturday mornings from 8.30am at the association grounds at 129 Mooloolah Connection Road, Mooloolah. Players up to the age of 10 will be able to learn new skills through ‘game sense’ or fun activities for the first 30 - 45 minutes session before splitting into teams to play in a match for the second 30 - 45 minutes. Swing into Softball is a new and exciting competition structure that meets the needs of both children and parents by condensing training, games and warmdown into one single weekly commitment. Speaking of the merits of the new program Softball Queensland Inc General Manager, Sue Nisbet said, “in today’s busy society, it’s quite common that both parents work fulltime jobs. The structure of Swing into Softball removes the demand on parents so they essentially only need to give up one time slot, rather than three.” “Another major advantage of the program is that Swing into Softball is an ability-based program which enables children to play against those of similar ability, rather than age.” The season is already underway and will continue on until March 2014; new participants are more than welcome to take part, with the season costing $105.00 per participant including a Swing into Softball shirt and cap. For more information or to register your child for Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association’s Swing into Softball season, please contact Charlie Walker on 0415 135 683. NOVEMBER 6 2013 |

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This week is a most exciting and yet volcanic one that bursts into your life to completely change your career and lifestyle. Erratic and quirky changes disrupt your life with nerve jarring suddenness. Luckily supportive allies ride to your side after November 10 when Mercury moves direct. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Perhaps this month you will find yourself in the midst of karmic endings, under an intense, sobering Scorpio Solar Eclipse. This will push you to look at uncomfortable issues you would rather avoid. Better to face your insecurities and doubts and construct inner fortitude to take you forward. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This Scorpio Eclipse this week combined with penetrating Pluto, gives you perspicacity to grasp the long range impact of what you are about to choose now. The position of Uranus makes it uncertain how much support you can count on from friends and family. New opportunities now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Both Uranus and Pluto are working you into a restless push forward towards change. Perhaps two or three options will open up under the intense Scorpio New Moon Solar Eclipse. Mars and Pluto will supply the persistence you need and Venus says its best to keep your business private.

Week beginning 06/11/13 PISCES February 20 – March 20 This last Eclipse for the year in the powerful zone brings you visions and beliefs that will form your new life perspective. Saturn controls optimism or idealism, but gives practical foundations to bring supportive allies. Future decisions include loved ones. Travel and education prove enhancing. ARIES March 21 – April 20 An explosive important tie could erupt in a life changing way. There is stress between responsibility and your need for freedom. However there is authority blocking you from taking the lead. All this, because there is a Scorpio Solar Eclipse this week, intensifying intimate emotions re: sharing. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The last eclipse this year is in the sign of Scorpio which is your opposite sign. With Mars and Pluto you feel a sensitive push towards the realisation that change is inevitable and absolute! You may understand now that it is time to let go of a bad relationship that’s hanging only by its last thread. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 In the heavens above there is a volatile mix up between Uranus and Pluto and together there will be life shaking emotions. This week prompts you to toss aside reason and act impulsively to change your life. The theme of the Scorpio Eclipse is like the volcano erupting now at Mt Eta, Italy.
CANCER June 22 – July 22 Now, with Mercury retrograde until November 10 pay attention to misunderstandings that need resolution. With this last Scorpio eclipse for this year, there may be severe, sudden, or rebellious reactions to what you do, rocking your security. It’s time to think about moving off on your own now. LEO July 23 – August 22 Maybe Mercury, now in its retrograde position, scours your old family and emotional roots. This turns your inner vision to an emotional family history fraught with old patterns of doubt and criticism. This is time to be insightful instead of obsessive or suspicious. Volcanic changes to your career path. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A problem clearing conversation, under Mercury retrograde, can open the way to progress in the weeks ahead. There is a Scorpio Solar Eclipse in your communications zone and this New Moon brings luck in self expression and relaying ideas. Useful contacts and travel give positive results. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 While you may prefer social values, dinners and parties, the Solar Eclipse brings fiscal focus and that will be your priority this month. Saturn is constricting the Scorpio New Moon eclipse to advise you of frugal resource management. So only shop with monetary discipline. Seek bargains.

until lunchtime when they stopped in the corner of a paddock where there was a windmill. After the inevitable ham sandwiches the boy went to the tap on the windmill to get some water to wash down his lunch. He took a big drink but sputtered and spat it out saying, “that water tastes terrible!” “That’s bore water” said his uncle. The young man turned green and gasped, “oh my god, you really don’t waste any of the pig do you.” Submitted by Bernie, Beerwah

A young man from the city was staying with his aunt and uncle on their pig farm. After a few days he was becoming bored and was sick of bacon for breakfast, ham sandwiches for lunch and for dinner – roast pork, pork chops and even pigs trotters. He noticed that the dogs were given the pig’s ears as well as leftovers and bones. One morning his uncle asked him to join him checking on the fences. To relieve the boredom the young man went. They checked the fences
