APRIL 6 2016
Hi Everyone
O
n Sunday morning we decided to head along to Mary Cairncross, for one last relaxed breakfast in the very rustic café with the best view around, and to take a final look around the education centre. We figured that with next weekend being the last weekend before both of these facilities will be closed, we wanted to take the chance to reminisce about the memories we have made there over the years. Back in 2000 having recently moved from inner city Brisbane with its hundreds of coffee shops I remember on my first visit to Mary Caincross Cafe, having a cappuccino and being in awe of such a spectacular view. And I was immediately struck by the dedication and knowledge of the Mary Cairncross Association members for the park. Like plenty of locals, I have loved spending many many hours in the very basic, rustic, and simple buildings that are on the site now, I do hope that the heart, character and uniqueness is not lost with our modern and stylish new building. Thanks to everyone who has played their part in creating a wonderful space for our community to share. Regards,

Local News Support signatures needed! By Sonia Clark The Mooloolah Valley Community Association has recently launched a petition to urge the State Government to grant a 99 year lease, or deed the land that the Mooloolah Community Centre resides on, to the community.
Hinterland Accounting Services Phone 5439 0188
Currently, the Community Centre is located at 43 Bray Road Mooloolah (the site of the original Mooloolah school) and the building is leased from Education Queensland. At present the current lease has nine years left to run with an option of a further 10 years. With the regular changes in governments at all levels, potentially the longevity of the Centre at the site is in question. Also as the building is currently leased - the options for extension or capital works to improve the Community Centre and offer greater services is limited. This is why the management committee is looking to secure the tenure of the organisation by requesting that Education Queensland deed the property to the people of Mooloolah or extend the existing lease to a term of 99 years. The Community Centre aims to support all residents in the 4553 postcode area. By promoting health and wellbeing, the Centre offers the community a welcoming, non-discriminatory,

inclusive and pro-active community hub. A number of initiatives engage the local community including workshops, the community op shop and garden and monthly barbecue. The centre also provides welfare support and assistance to those in need. Both MP for Caloundra Mark McArdle and Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay have thrown their support behind the campaign which will be presented to Parliament at the end of May. The community organisation has launched an e-petition as well as providing a hard copy of the petition to all the local businesses in the Mooloolah Valley area. To support the e-petition (number 2563 -16) go tohttp://www.parliament. qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/e-petitions or drop in and offer your support at one of the local businesses.

Respected lawyer to become Honorary Fellow Highly regarded commercial lawyer John Gallagher from Beerwah will become an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Mr Gallagher, who served on USC’s Planning and Resources Committee from 2006 to 2015, will receive the award at the USC Arts, Business and Law graduation on Friday, April 8. As an enthusiastic committee member, Mr Gallagher helped guide strategic direction and provided legal and corporate advice to the University in a period that saw USC’s student population more than double. He monitored USC's progress towards achieving its institutional goals and provided advice on business, corporate and legal matters. The Senior Fellowship to Mr Gallagher will be one of five honorary awards presented over four USC graduation ceremonies on April 7 and 8. Mr Gallagher worked as a barrister, in private practice and for major banks around Australia and in London before settling on the Sunshine Coast 14 years ago. He opened his own commercial law firm, Argon Law, in 2013. Mr Gallagher initially became involved with the Planning and Resources Committee at the suggestion of his uncle Ian Kennedy, who served as USC Chancellor from 1998 to 2007. He said he was humbled to have his service to the University recognised with an Honorary Senior Fellowship.

“I am committed to giving back to the communities we, at Argon Law serve,” he said. “I continue to enjoy maintaining my connection with USC in any way, let alone to be honoured with an award like this. “I’m very grateful to all the people that I’ve had the opportunity to work with, particularly the chancellors and vice-chancellors – with my uncle Ian Kennedy primary among them.” Mr Gallagher said it had been deeply satisfying to have used his legal background to contribute towards USC’s development. “The thing that stands out for me from my time serving on the committee is the sheer growth that has occurred at USC over the nine years,” he said. “Student numbers doubled and the number of buildings constructed in that time is pretty amazing. It was satisfying to see those grow from conception to a finished product.” USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said Mr Gallagher’s generous involvement with USC had helped the university mature into a highly regarded institution. “He has demonstrated an extraordinary blend of vision, energy and strategic leadership, along with the qualifications and skills to make a tremendous impact on this University,” Professor Hill said.

Get to know your weeds and pest animals Small acreage owners beware … lurking nearby may be some pesky weeds and feisty feral animals just waiting for an opportunity to cause you some serious grief. But don’t despair, expert help is at hand. The Sunshine Coast Council invites you to an invasive plants and animals’ field day to find out everything you need to know. The field day – to be held on Saturday, April 16 at the Conondale Memorial Recreation Reserve (Green Park) from 9.00am to 3.00pm – is totally free and no prior booking is necessary. Council’s Pest Plant and Vector Control Team Leader Mark Call says that it is the perfect opportunity for new and long-term landholders to brush up on their knowledge and understanding of local weed and pest animal problems they may encounter.
Council officers Tony Carthcart and Mark Call with the wick wiper and a feral cat trap which will be on display
“We’ll have live specimens to look over, poster displays to browse, factsheets and identification brochures to take away, and information on assistance programs that council offers to work with landholders,” said Mr Call. “Renowned weeds experts will be giving presentations, such as Graeme Elphinstone (ex DPI) talking about giant rats tail grass, Hellen Haapakoski from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries updating us on the new Biodiversity Act and specialist council staff giving tours showing new rats tail grass on-ground control and management trial results. “We’re also encouraging landholders to bring in their weeds they want identified, and we’ll identify them and suggest ways that they can be controlled.” Council’s new weedy Sporobolus grass wick wiper equipment will be demonstrated, along with a range of other weed control technologies. Help will also be at hand for pest animals too, according to Council’s feral Animal Control Team Leader Tony Cathcart. “Dr Ben Allen – well known Queensland wild dog researcher – will give talks on wild dogs, their ecology, behaviour and how that leads into better management and control approaches,” said Mr Cathcart. “We will have state-of-the-art feral pig, wild dog and Indian myna bird traps on display and will be happy to demonstrate their correct use. “Special displays will be presented on wild deer management and what new and emerging pest animals we need to keep an eye out for.”

Come on, you know you want to! For nearly two years Julie Allen has been teaching her unique funky dance aerobics class on a Wednesday afternoon in Maleny. With some of the students travelling from Beerwah to attend, Julie has decided to start running a 10.30am class at the Landsborough Hall … and she is really looking forward to continuing sharing in the fun and success of her students. One of the ladies who has attended every class has summed up the experience by saying … “I just don’t know what I would do without this class.” Julie said it isn’t just about doing exercise but about coming along, having fun, having those good endorphins kick in and then walking out the door with a smile on your dial. A friend of Julie once shared some very wise words that have stuck with her. ‘You don’t stop dancing because you grow old … you grow old because you stop dancing!’ New students who join our group find the atmosphere is very welcoming, and Julie is keen to reinforce that the classes are definitely not a “glam Lorna Jayne style group”. Clothing is all about practicality and comfort. This philosophy is clearly part of Julie’s approach to the classes. With all ages welcome, she really likes to encourage older clients, ladies and gents to come along and give it a go.

And most importantly … there will be a free sausage sizzle. The Conondale Memorial Recreation Reserve is located 14 kilometres west of Maleny on the Maleny-Kenilworth Road. There is plenty of on-site parking.

A Material Change of Use application (MCU16/0029) has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council to erect a new mobile phone tower on private land at 14 Clarkes Road, Beerwah. According to the application, lodged by Optus Mobile Pty Ltd, it seeks approval for a 40-plus metre monopole tower on the rural land servicing both Optus and Vodafone networks on the northern side of Beerwah. Eight locations were identified – six within Australia Zoo lands – as being suitable, however seven were rejected by the relevant landholders leaving the Clarkes Road site the only remaining option. Despite that, Optus contends that the chosen location meets the relevant operational requirements. However, local surrounding farmers say that it’s just another example of how decisions are made which negatively impact upon their ability to make a living from the land. Pineapple farmer Scott Dorman (pictured) explains that the farming land along Old Gympie Road between Beerwah and Landsborough has been designated as a green agricultural buffer separating the two townships. “But that means that we have restrictions on what we can and can’t do on and with the land,” he said. “And with urbanisation creeping on the sides, restrictions on doing basic agricultural activities like fertilising and spraying, and the pressures of farming on relatively small family blocks, we’re finding it tougher and tougher to make a living from farming here. “But the problem is that the land zonings and planning limitations restrict what alternatives are possible – whether that be different crops, farm tourism or residential housing.” And now Scott and the few other farmers remaining, feel that the tower located where it is, is just another impost that they have to make allowances for. “We’re not against mobile phone towers – but just for once we wish the decision makers would take into account how these things actually impact upon our livelihoods,” he decries. “The tower has to have no impact upon visual amenity, so the application identifies vegetation on my land as a visual buffer zone so that people don’t see the tower when driving from Landsborough.
“There’s no asking us, just an expectation that we’ll give up the use of that part of our farm and leave it for them to hide their tower behind. So there’s another part of the farm we can’t use, " he said. “The tower located where it is, will also reduce the possible future uses of the 50 acre block adjacent. If we did want to look at doing a subdivision there, here’s no way that we could with a mobile phone tower 25m from the boundary. And even if we could, we’d have to sell the land too cheaply as people won’t want to live next to a mobile phone tower. “The block is also one I work in all the time, so now I’m subjected to the electromagnetic radiation they emit every day. The planning rules say that there can’t be a school within 500m, but it’s OK for farmers to work 50m away. “And the block is where I was looking to build a house for the family – but now I’ll have to suck it up and have my kids live next to mobile phone tower. “There’s just no consideration as to how it impacts on our lives – but then, we’re just ‘farmers’ and we’re just expected to give way to everyone else’s needs,” Scott laments. As part of the process, the application is now open for public submissions. These should be ‘properly made’ to be accepted – that is: be in writing; be made to the assessment manager; be signed by each person who made the submission (unless it is made electronically); state the name and residential or business address of each person who made the submission; state what aspects of the plan or proposed development you support or oppose and why; and be received by council before the closing date of April 20. Further details can be found by going to www. pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and searching for MCU16/0029.

Remembering Michael Berry’s work By Jill Morris Two of Michael Berry’s film productions ‘A Life... R M Williams’ and ‘The Last Crush the Moreton Sugar Mill at Nambour’ will be screened in Maleny Community Centre by the Maleny Film Society on Sunday, April 17 at 2.30pm. This is a tribute to a much revered advocate of social and artistic justice on many fronts in our regional community. Admission is free. ‘The Last Crush’ was made with students from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Michael’s influence across many activities and artforms will live on, despite his passing in January. Many artists, especially writers and film-makers, have benefited from Michael’s honest criticism, generous advice and creative inspiration. Many will remember with gratitude that soft voice and the quizzical smile; sometimes just a nod from a distance that told them Michael approved of their achievements. A talented journalist since ‘Farrago’ university newspaper editorship, his major study was Fine Arts; but a career in TV current affairs and news began in the UK with BBC TV, sending the young producer back to Australia to make ‘Peach’s Gold’. Michael’s mission as a writer, director, producer or executive producer was always, according to his wife Faith Baigent, to ‘make other people look good’. As Executive Producer of the innovative ‘Hypotheticals’, he made Geoffrey Robertson look excellent; and his brilliant brain gleamed behind ABC investigations into social justice issues over some decades. As a producer of ‘Four Corners’ and ‘The 7.30
EXERCISE CLASSES
Report’, Michael initiated a series called ‘A Life…’ the first program focussing on the life of R M Williams. Other documentaries put under a magnifying glass were other Australian benefactors, including Weary Dunlop and Dame Beryl Beaurepaire. Local film-maker Leanne Farmiloe said Michael will indeed be missed. “The community will miss Michael's clever and positive presence and I personally will never forget the gift he gave me through his encouragement and support on my film ‘The Clearing’,” she said. “I am very grateful to have met such a generous and accomplished man.” “In my role as a children’s book author I remember Michael as the Channel Seven News chief swooping into the Book Farm with a crew to capture the packing of literary merchandise for export, asking ‘just the right searching questions,” she said. Jess Begun of the Celebration of Books Festival remembers Michael’s perspicacious conversation with scriptwriter Sue Smith for the Australian Film Festival. Cameraman Peter Erdmann’s archival video footage of Maleny co-operatives reveals Michael in many roles as advocate, chairperson and commentator. The Sunday, April 17 afternoon screening is an opportunity for many to pay homage to Michael Berry’s career over drinks, tea and coffee and a selection of his films.

Chappy Bowls Again!
By Mike Turner After the fun and frivolity of last year’s Chappy Bowls Day, and lots of people asking whether we were going to be running another one - we decided to oblige. This great Sunday afternoon event is about getting friends together for a good time and also helping raise funds for the five day a week chaplaincy service at Beerwah High School. This event is run by the fabulous Glenda McSwain who works tirelessly behind-the-scenes in support of our chaplaincy. Big thanks also to Sharon and the team at ‘Club Glasshouse’ for giving us a great place to hold this event. We also want to thank and acknowledge the local Rotary Club for cooking and serving lunch again this year. ‘Chappy Bowls Day’ is at Club Glasshouse on Sunday, April 17, and will start at 12.30pm with the barbecue lunch. Flat-soled shoes are required for all players and fancy dress is encouraged. There are prizes to be presented in the clubhouse after the game, including best overall score, nearest to the Jack and best dressed team. Player’s fees are $25.00 per person which includes lunch. To enter a team, contact Glenda on glenda.mcswain@iinet.net.au or Mike Turner at the high school on 5436 5333.
An egg-cellant send off It was with mixed emotions that Leeanne Logan went into Beerwah Kindergarten for the last time on the Wednesday before Easter. After eight years in the role of Kindy assistant she was sad at be leaving her kindy friends behind, during that time 200 children, have experienced Ms Logan’s nurturing guidance. While a lot has changed at the kindy over the past years, one thing has remained Leeanne Logan (centre) the same – Ms Logan’s dedication to the with Oskar and Jessica children. “I think the only thing that is the same as when I got here is the building,” Leeanne said. “But in the end, it’s the children that have been the best thing, watching their development throughout the year is always something I enjoyed.” The Cockatoo class gave Ms Logan a spectacular send off, decked out in handmade bunny ears and Easter egg hats, the children sang an impressive array of Easter songs much to the delight of parents and grandparents.

Macadamia lovers: high hopes for harvest
MUMS, DADS KIDS & FRIENDS!
Growers of Australia’s home-grown nut are cranking up their mechanical harvesters and gearing up to gather the finest quality, best tasting macadamias in the world as mature nuts fall to the ground across subtropical orchards in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. Aussies nutty for macadamias are in for a treat with the first forecast of the season sitting at 46,750 tonnes in-shell, representing a 4% increase in production from 2015. Husband and wife duo Katherine and Nic Emery, who operate a 4000 tree macadamia orchard in Wolvi, near Gympie, said growers are once again rolling up their sleeves to deliver another season of one of Australia’s mostloved nuts. “Growers are usually harvesting from now until around August depending on weather conditions. Once the nuts are collected, they go to the factory for processing. The husk is removed then the nuts go through a three week drying process to reduce moisture to 1.5 per cent. From there, they go into the cracker, are packed into special oxygen-free bags and stored in a humidity controlled environment,” Nic said. Jolyon Burnett, CEO of the Australian Macadamia Society, said the upcoming crop looks positive with growers hitting the macadamia harvest with enthusiasm. “Our farmers are incredibly dedicated, passionate people who will harvest macadamia nuts for the next six months and are tackling this time of year with optimism,” he said. “This season we’re hoping the mix of warm temperatures, ample sunlight and just enough rain will produce some top-notch nuts and we have our fingers crossed that we’re in for a great year,” said Mr Burnett. Australian macadamias are one of the few foods that can be found in many different aisles of the supermarket, from fresh nuts to muesli and cereals to snack bars, confectionery, bakery products, frozen desserts and ice creams, oils and even skin care and beauty products. Macadamias are versatile and delicious in both sweet and savoury dishes. They are an essential part of a healthy diet, offering the highest amount of good fats of any nut. They are best stored in an airtight container in the fridge to preserve their freshness.

Run4Fun to cool the school For those who like the idea of getting down and dirty for a great cause, the Glass House Mountains State School Run4Fun fundraiser will be held on the school grounds on Friday, April 29, and promises to be even bigger and better than last year. Run in lieu of a Cross Country race, this mini ‘Tough Mudder’ for kids was so successful last year that the school’s P&C committee were able to purchase air-conditioning for 75% of the school. This year they are hoping to raise enough funds to finish the job as well as help out with the running costs for the first couple of years. This year, they have opened it up to the local community and businesses to get involved by nominating your own community/corporate team to run the course, with prizes throughout the day for both the children’s events and corporate/team events.

Transportable Shade Sheds is a long running Landsborough business that, while locally based, has ‘global vision’. The company has developed a business model that provides everyday people who want to own their own business with a viable product that is additionally supported by a small business platform – Saver6.com One of its unique points of difference is that this business prospect comes with no ongoing franchise fees just ongoing support. Since Transportable Shade Sheds partnered with Saver6.com six months ago, 18 small businesses have already taken up this opportunity. Interested business owners purchase a customised trailer that allows them to sell and install the extensive Transportable Shade Shed product range. Through the joint venture with the cloud based Saver6.com, the business is then supported with further access to other local opportunities as well as marketing, social media and administration support. Global Business Manager, Tyler Maclaren from Transportable Shade Sheds says they are really excited about getting people into a business that works for them, and they want to do everything they can to ensure that is the case. “Our products are well known throughout Australia and our extensive product range means that no matter where you are in the world – Transportable Shade Sheds has a product to suit your market.” Richard James of Superb Stanley Services is the latest mobile business owner to take advantage of the Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com alliance. Richard originally came across the business model on Facebook and was curious to find out more. Having previously owned his own business, Richard was keen to be his own boss again and after careful consideration decided to take up the opportunity. “The product really makes sense. Just about everyone has either a car, caravan or boat and in our harsh climate these vehicles really need cover. “I’ve had my own experience with vehicle weather damage so I’m happy to have a business that helps people protect their vehicles,” said Richard. During the decision process, Richard spoke to Tyler and team and came up to Landsborough from Brisbane to find out more about the business. He was convinced by the a number of sound reasons as to why it was a good choice; including the strong company branding, 10 year warranty on the sheds, choice of Colorbond roofing and the sales and product training and support. “Since purchasing the equipment last month, I have been provided with numerous leads that have already led to work. I really appreciate the product knowledge, training and advice.”

Vital link in school community
Peachester State School recently had their P&C Annual General Meeting with returning President Margie Jennings reporting that 2015 was a very productive and positive year for the school P&C, with everyone doing their bit. Last year this parent body contributed a massive $40,000 back into our 91 student school (87 students in 2016). One of the biggest contributions was $26,000 to match a successful gambling grant. This enabled all classrooms to be air-conditioned for the first time. Margie, also a teacher, reported that “the air-conditioning has been such a positive.” The teachers have noticed how much more uninterrupted learning has been possible in the cool rooms over summer, in comparison to other years. The school also received a large digital sign that all members of the community can benefit from as it communicates important notices for the school. Healthy tuck-shop sales also contributed to P&C earnings. The 2016 P&C committee (pictured) is Fiona Gray (fundraising coordinator), Karyn Boyle (secretary), Margie Jennings (president), Rosemarie Hodder (school principal) and Julie Barbeler (treasurer). Save the date: Thursday, May 5 for the very popular Peachester State School Mother’s Day High Tea. Tickets will be available in Term 2. www.gcnews.com.au

Final days for cafe The Mary Cairncross Café at Maleny has provided locals and visitors with plenty of great memories over the years. Especially during the last nine years since the kitchen was expanded, and Sarah Castaldi took on the lease to run it as a seven day a week business. On Sunday morning there were many locals and regulars there to make sure they could enjoy the relaxing views and great food before it closes on Sunday, April 10. All of the people we spoke to had been regular customers and were sad that the café would be lost to progress. If you would like to enjoy the rustic charm of the café you still have a few days to drop in and see Sarah and the team.

Peachester CWA Update
Contributed by Coral Beutel (Hon. Pres) On February 9 we catered for a local resident’s funeral. Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife and family. On February 11, four members travelled to Yandina for the first Nambour North Coast Divisional Meeting. Cooking started at the Peachester State School with Cath and Coral helping out. Our markets on Saturday, February 27 were a success with 24 stalls. The first part of the cooking competition was judged by Margaret Wild and her daughter, before the markets started. The results are: boiled fruit cake – Bev, sultana cake – Coral, date loaf – Jo, cinnamon tea cake – Bev, chocolate cake – Jo, shortbread – Jo, orange bar – Coral, ginger slice – Cath. These cakes were sold at the markets. Congratulations ladies. At our March meeting, Jo our international officer, gave members a very informative talk about Greenland. On Monday, March 7 Margaret and Coral went to Maroochydore to demonstrate floral art. Judges and convenors were there to help and guide anyone who entered the competition. Coral went to the Peachester State School for the Easter bonnet parade then on to the playgroup for an Easter egg hunt. Don’t forget the Cancer Council morning tea on Tuesday, April 12 from 9.00am – 11.30am, with a guest speaker and entertainment plus a delightful morning tea. The rolling raffle will be drawn throughout the morning. Some of the prizes include a helicopter ride for six people, a weekend in a unit at Kings Beach, a family pass to Australia Zoo, and many more great prizes. These prizes have all been donated. A special thank you to these generous people. Next Markets are on April 30 with our local fire brigade members running the canteen. Keep well and god bless. www.gcnews.com.au

Serious battery storage testing by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ
The state electricity monopoly in another state has just completed testing three of the best residential battery storage systems for surplus solar energy to be reused at night time after the sun sinks in the west. The three brands tested were, Tesla, Sunverge and Samsung. The summary of this test has some interesting results. The Tesla was the cheapest, Surverge 70% higher than the Tesla and the Samsung about 10 – 15% higher than Tesla in costs. Two important features to consider: 1. The ability to operate when the grid fails. Tesla does not; the other two brands do have this feature. 2. The ability to increase the battery storage capacity by adding additional batteries. Tesla does not pass the test; the other two brands have this feature. The Tesla is wall mounted and can be a real drama because of the weight, 96kg hanging off the wall. The testing state power company had to make a stand to support the battery to save the wall. The report results say the Sunverge system had the best software, probably of all available battery storage models in Australia. In summary, the report put Sunverge as the pick of the three battery storage systems tested, but was quite conscious of the high price, the Samsung was a good second and the Tesla had the least to recommend itself except the lowest priced of the three systems. Life is like that, generally everything costs money, and better things cost more. Now the utilities, all generally government monopolies that provide electricity within each state, still cannot see the light, according to investment bank Morgan Stanley. The bank predicts that 1 million households in Australia will adopt a battery storage system within the next four years. Most householders believe they just want the freedom to generate and store their power. No one asks what is the return on the investment for a new lounge suite or new timber flooring or a new car. They just want the product. Morgan Stanley believes …“The preconditions are in place with a highly urbanised, high income society facing some of the highest electricity costs in the world” Business feature

Environment Carbon Conversations
After the successful launch of the Carbon Conversations pilot in Australia late last year, hosted by Daniel Wilson and Paul Bailey at the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre, you’re invited to participate in the second group, commencing at the Mooloolah Community Centre on April 21. Co-founded five years ago in the UK by Andy Brown and Rosemary Randall, Carbon Conversations is a six session not-for-profit group process that creates the safe emotional and thinking space for a capped group of six - eight participants. The idea is for them to reflect on their emotional responses to global warming and to think together about the changes required for each participant to reduce their personal carbon footprint. Carbon Conversations groups are being held in many cities and towns across the UK and, following on from the recent successful launch in Australia, a Carbon Conversations group is expected to commence in Victoria this year. Carbon Conversations is a not-for-profit group process. The only costs incurred are those associated with room hire and the purchase of the book ‘In Time For Tomorrow?’ If you are interested in participating in the next Carbon Conversations group at the Mooloolah Community Centre, or wish simply to know more about the model, please call Daniel Wilson on 0403 699 544. You can also access more information from the Carbon Conversations website at www.carbonconversations.org

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Give me a home among the gum trees Where I grew up in New Zealand, there was one type of gum tree – the Sydney blue gum – and I thought gums were rather boring. But then I moved to Queensland and a knowledgeable and patient gentleman taught me all about ‘Eucalypts’ and their relatives. He took me into the bush and showed me how to distinguish between the smooth barks of Scribbly gums and Grey gums, the fibrous strips of the Stringybarks, the dimples and mottles of Spotted gums and Smooth barked apples, the circular pimples of the Tallowwoods, the flaky red bark of Bloodwoods, and the hard black surface of Ironbarks. I learned to look at the gum nuts, the flowers, the shape and positioning of the leaves. I could recognise the brush box from the whorl of leaves at the end of the branchlets, and Angophora species from their crooked branches. He showed me which species are food for koalas and possums, and which provide profuse flowers for nectar feeding birds. He explained that the big gnarly old growth trees are precious, as they provide nesting sites for birds, possums, gliders, even native bees and other insects. And I fell in love. Not with my teacher, but with the humble gum tree. And with the complex ecosystems that form around these beautiful trees. The diversity of ecosystems in Australia is second to none. There is no doubt – my home will forever be among the gum trees. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Playgroup Easter bonnets
Savvy students at Mooloolah State School Peachester Playgroup hopped into Easter by joining in with the Peachester State School Easter Bonnet parade, followed by their own Easter egg hunt, and Easter party. Every year our playgroup is invited to join many school activities, including Easter, Book Week dress ups and Under 8’s day. This is a great way to integrate our littlies with the ‘big school’ community. By the time many of our playgroup graduates are ready to head off to Prep, they are already familiar with the school surroundings and have existing friendships with many of the older (former playgroup) kids. This not only makes it easier for the kids but also new mums to join the school community with existing friendships from playgroup days. Thanks to Peachester State School for fostering this relationship. Peachester Playgroup meets every Tuesday, behind the church and Hall at 9.15am. For enquiries please call Krysty on 0400 175 134.
Recently a select group of students from Year 3 and Year 4, along with Ms Caroline Kelly as their mentor at Mooloolah State school, have taken part in a new online challenge. The course is Computational Thinking run by Bebras Australia. The students take part in online challenges that use computational thinking skills including managing resources, analysis, creativity and safety. These skills are all used in everyday life and help them to come up with solutions for many problems. The students were very excited when they heard the news that they would be a part of this amazing challenge. The problems were challenging yet fun for the students. They started at a basic level and worked their way up to harder, more complex challenges. The students from Mooloolah State School, who were involved with the online challenge, are highly engaged with the program and learning new skills that will enhance their technological learning and thinking skills in years to come. It is a world-wide challenge and the students are competing against children from many countries. Mooloolah State School is very proud, keep up the great work guys, and great job!

You Said It Thank you
I would like to thank all the staff of Club Glasshouse, who made the night very enjoyable for Dougie’s 70th Birthday. I had had lots of phone calls, emails and letters saying what a wonderful night it was. My family did very well to put it all together while we were down south holidaying with family. Beautiful food and lovely venue. Thank you all very much. Gwen Kippen Beerwah
Keeping busy

Big effort
A big thank you to all our Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Inc. (GMAN) volunteers. The early group cleaned the Page Street site for the Glasshouse District Park and the others cleaned the town area. There were 20 large bags of rubbish and eight bags of recyclables collected to add to the 14 tonnes collected over the Sunshine Coast. A particular thank you to Joan Tucker who covered a very large area, and to councillor Rick for the supplies. The GMAN Management Committee

Thank you
I want to express my gratitude to the residents of Glass House Country for the support and trust you've given me in re-electing me as your representative in council. Thank you. I'm very happy to get such a strong result - when I'm in a challenging debate in council, it will be motivating to know I have the community behind me. I am determined to work as hard as I can for all Division 1 residents and I believe we can get some great results this term. I am also pleased to be able to continue to work with Cr Jenny McKay to argue together for the hinterland. It's been my privilege to talk to so many of you during the course of the campaign, and to learn more about your lives, your problems, and your hopes for our area. You've given me lots to work on. If you'd like to stay involved with a particular issue, please get in touch or come to my ‘outand-about’ sessions in your community (times and places will be in GC&M News). I want to especially thank my supporters and family who gave up their time to support my campaign to make sure our area reaches its remarkable potential. I couldn't have done it without you. I hope you all had a great Easter. I definitely enjoyed spending some time with my family and re-charging after the election. Now it's back to work! Cr Rick Baberowski Division 1

Just Like You
by Neil Thomas As we sit here and watch the world passing us by, in all that we own underneath the night skyit comes to us all at the end of the day, what we really are watching is our life passing byAnd we know what you think it's all over your face, just a bum or a loser, a true waste of space, but that isn't fair and it's not even true, because in so many ways we really are just like you, yes its true, Just Like YouWe're just a mother or father who when life knocked us down, just couldnt get up, we gave up on ourselves and we walked into town, like the son or the daughter who had so much to give now we struggle sometimes for a reason to liveBut we never stop hoping that maybe someday our life will turn round and we'll get back on our way, but that doesn't seem likely the way our life goes, in fact why we're still here it seems nobody knows, THATS WHYyou must understand and believe that it's true, with a little more time and a little more help, we could've been like you, just like you, yes its true, Just Like You!

3 ways first home buyers can improve their borrowing power When you’re looking to buy your first home, you might be surprised to find that you can’t borrow as much as you wanted. You aren’t the only one: the average loan amount for a first home buyer dropped $6,400 in December 2015 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, indicating that new investors are getting less finance out of their lenders. So, how can you improve your borrowing power? Save for a bigger deposit Lending is all about risk for the lender. They don’t want to lend too much money to someone who is then unable to pay it back. Your loan-to-value ratio is part of what determines what kind of risk you are: the amount of money you are asking for compared to the value of 18

the property you want to buy. That deposit is all important. Typically, you will be asked for a 20 per cent deposit, but if you can invest 30 per cent as a down payment instead, you’ll reduce the amount of risk your finance request presents to the lender. Supply more documentation Sometimes getting a better loan is simply a matter of determination, on the part of both you and your lender. You might find that you can’t borrow as much as you want because you are considered too much of a risk. Thankfully, there is a way around that. If you can supply a lender with more information about your financial situation, such as your living
expenses or available savings, you will come across as more convincing. If you’re self-employed, you might find it difficult to provide consistent income records, but there are low documentation loans available for people in just that position. It’s just a matter of finding the right lender. Speaking of which… Find the right provider Find a different provider! Different lenders have different rules when it comes to risk. If you find that one financial institution isn’t willing to give you what you need for your first home, then find a different provider! It doesn’t have to be a chore either. Who wants to go trawling through hundreds of different lenders? Let us do the work
for you. Smartline can provide you with a first home loan selection tailored to your needs, from repayment periods to LVR requirements. Don’t mope about feeling disappointed – contact Teresa today.

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra
Mooloolah Community Centre petition
The good people behind the Mooloolah Community Centre need your help. They have launched a petition urging the State Government to either donate the title of the land they operate on (currently owned by Education Queensland) or grant a long-term lease of 50-99 years, and they need your signature. Without either action, the centre simply cannot move forward. They cannot apply for grants for capital works or undertake any major projects on the grounds. The community centre acts as a pillar of support for people in the local community, offering a range of services including emergency relief, counselling, Justice of the Peace Services, a monthly community barbecue, mini-markets, a community garden, room hire and one of the best op-shops on the Coast. As their local MP, I am more than happy to sponsor the petition and have it tabled in Parliament but in order for the State Government to listen, we need as many signatures as possible. They have set a target of 10,000. Any resident of Queensland can sign it. If you can help please sign the e-petition here https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-ofassembly/petitions/e-petitions
Biggest Morning Tea
Don’t forget to put in your diary I’m once again hosting a Biggest Morning Tea on Friday, May27 at the CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street Caloundra, from 9.30am. The event will be catered and the cost is just a gold coin donation, which will go straight to the Cancer Council. There will also be raffles and a silent auction and guest speakers. If you can attend, please phone my office on 5329 4100 or email caloundra@parliament. qld.gov.au
Immunisation rates not good enough
Recent figures detailing the Sunshine Coast’s immunisation rates show the region falls well behind the national target of 95% by a staggering 6.8% at just 88.2%. This translates to an alarming 11.8% of Sunshine Coast children under the age of five and 13% of two year olds being at risk of contracting or spreading deadly diseases such as whooping cough, polio and meningococcal. Why isn’t the message getting through here on the Coast? Parents should immunise their children as soon as they are born and stay upto-date with the schedule. Just because some diseases are not ‘seen’ as much nowadays does not mean we should be lax in our approach to protecting those most vulnerable – the young and the elderly. If you are unsure, please talk to your doctor immediately and protect your loved ones today.

Rhys heads to parliament Congratulations to Rhys Boardman who has been selected for the 2016 YMCA Youth Parliament. The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP) has been run by young people for young people for well over a decade and has provided an apolitical environment where participants can engage with community issues as youth representatives. As well as providing an important link for youth to influence government, QYP is a fantastic opportunity for participants to improve confidence through interacting with participants of varying backgrounds and opinions. Beerwah High student Rhys will be the member for Caloundra and will be writing a bill based on Education, Skills and Training and will be looking at stopping illegal underage activities. This week Rhys will be attending a threeday training workshop in Brisbane where the official launch of the program will be held at Queensland’s Parliament House. Youth Members will meet for the first time and be able to form committees and discuss ideas. Then in September, he will attend a week-long camp at a YMCA facility. During the week the Youth Parliament will debate and present their Bills in the House of Representatives.
Caloundra JP fraternity gather for skills seminar More than 100 registered Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations in the Caloundra Electorate attended a skills seminar hosted by Caloundra MP Mark McArdle last Friday. The seminar provided an overview of the different types of general witnessing that many JPs encountered, the JPs in the Community Program, and also paid tribute to those who had notched up 25 and 40 year long-service awards. In 2015, 60 volunteers manned the dedicated signing sites of Beerwah Library, Caloundra Courthouse and Caloundra Library, which equated to more than 4,000 volunteer hours. Beerwah JP Colin Brighton was one of the longservice award recipients who were presented JPs for 25 years’ service. Under the JP and C.Dec Act, JPs duties include issuing summonses, arrest warrants and search warrants, issuing justice examination orders, attending records of juvenile interviews, hearing bail applications, attending searches and witnesses the destruction of particulars. A JP App is also available for download where JPs can look up the JP Handbook and people can use it to locate a JP. with Landsborough Health & Wellness Centre Everyone is unique and is on a journey to finding their own meaning to life. This process involves reducing the discrepancy between our current life and the life we desire. Sometimes you can feel confused about what will bring you joy or just the general direction that your life is moving in. At Landsborough Health & Wellness Centre we have a number of practitioners who can help you manifest the life you desire. Healing, Guidance, and Counselling.
Sleep apnoea: are you at risk?
with McCloy Dental Sleep apnoea is the new ‘big thing’ in medicine. Everywhere you look someone is being diagnosed with it. It has been blamed for traffic and shipping accidents, marriage break-ups and lots more. Snoring and sleep apneoa are not necessarily coincidental. People who are at risk include those with: BMI over 35, history of congestive cardiac failure, atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure that is not responsive to medication, type 2 diabetes, nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias, history of stroke, pulmonary hypertension, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, a retruded jaw, craniofacial syndromes associated with a retruded jaw or large tongue e.g. down syndrome, apert syndrome, or family history of obstructive apnoea. At McCloy Dental we have the experience to understand how all of these factors work together to affect the treatment that you should receive, and what will work for you. A mandibular advancement device is a first line treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, and in severe apnoea if you are unable to tolerate CPAP, or need it for times when CPAP is not appropriate or possible, such as camping trips. A mandibular advancement device is smaller and for most, more easily worn and tolerated. Call McCloy Dental to be assessed for something that may be life-changing.

Acts of kindness I woke up early this morning after having dreamt of acts of compassion and love, of figures such as Christ, Gandhi and Mandela. Being able to turn the other cheek when confronted with those who had wronged them I saw and do see as the most wonderful act of love that one could perform. The dream must have come about as I have recently thought much about fighting aggression and hostility with love, using gentle acts of compassion as ultimately the only way to turn someone who is committed to hurting. And as I woke from my dream I began thinking about that extraordinary Victor Hugo novel – Les Miserables, with its astonishing acts of humanity and love. Such are beyond us mere mortals but they can inspire us in our day-to-day lives. Perhaps there are family members with whom we might reconcile some differences or someone at work or a neighbour with whom we have an unresolved issue? (Most of us recognise that there are probably a few people in our lives that it would be good to start again with…). But if that all sounds too tough, then what about acts of kindness at a less challenging level. Maybe just giving something up to help others - perhaps just helping out in your community? I have friends who always take bags with them when they go walking so they can pick up rubbish. That is a lovely gesture for their community. Well, I have got through well over half my column today and not mentioned music. So what can musicians do that might be considered acts of kindness? Why not just get out in your community and make music, sharing your God-given talent with others? And what about being more inclusive, inviting others to join your group? There are studies that provide convincing proof that music making is good for the soul and health of all around us. Google ‘Man in nursing home reacts to hearing music from his era’ on You tube to confirm this! And be warned, tears may flow! So musicians, there’s your task for the month - find someone who likes music but is a little shy about it, and encourage them to join you in your music-making activities. You’ll feel good about it and it is going to be great for them. Now that’s a real act of kindness! ‘If music be the food of love, play on’.

Maleny house concert
The Delphics, a popular Brisbane folk trio, are guests at the next Goodwills Maleny house concert on Sunday, April 10. They have entertained audiences at the Maleny, Illawarra and Neurum Creek festivals and are regulars at Brisbane folk sessions. The group comprises folk session organiser Don Jarmey, singer-songwriter Sally Harris, and young musician Sam Krauser. Playing and singing mainly Sally’s originals, their songs have a fine variety of topics ‘from pirates and petticoats to beggars and booze-bolters’, delivered through tunes-based ballads. At times they’re foot-stompingly rhythmic; others are more quiet and reflective. The concert starts at 2.00pm on Sunday, April 10 with an opening set from hosts, The Goodwills (Bob and Laurel Wilson). Tickets are $15.00 /$12.00. Afternoon tea will be available. For bookings and directions call Laurel on 5435 2333. The Goodwills house concerts are sponsored by the Queensland Folk Federation.

Dine In
with Sonia Clark
Take Out Glenview Gardens The venue can only be described as unique and can definitely cater to all occasions and events. They are open for casual dining from Wednesday to Sunday from 8.00am until late and offer a great place to catch up with family and friends. Glenview Gardens also cater for functions, including an elaborate high tea, great for a wedding shower, milestone birthday parties, Hen’s night functions and weddings. It is BYO alcohol. For special occasions, Glenview Gardens also has a comprehensive array of decorations and table settings on hand and are happy to create that extra special setting for your function. There are a number of different packages available starting at just $25.00 ($21.00 per head for the seniors special) that includes various courses and complimentary non-alcoholic fruit punch and tea and coffee stations. This is the perfect space for any group gatherings, and there is a lot of flexibility in seating arrangements, allowing functions to be easily split
over different areas if required. Glenview Gardens also cater well for Hinterland work functions, seminars and meetings which can be booked outside of normal trading hours for groups of 10 or more as well as having five bed and breakfast rooms that look over the tropical pool. They currently host a number of local groups and organisations for monthly meetings and events. The venue is well set up to provide something special to suit everyone and there is a lot on offer here. There is a picturesque outdoor area that meanders around the venue. It provides a number of intimate spaces and nooks, as well as a larger dining area covered by a marquee, that caters well to a party, group lunch or dinner setting. The outdoor area also features a couple of children friendly zones / play areas as well as a comfortable spot that welcomes fur babies. Both inside and out is really quite charming, with a lot of interesting touches and something uniquely different to see
around every corner. This month Lea and I dropped in for breakfast on our way into the office. I enjoyed a smashed avocado and fetta dish with poached eggs and cherry tomatoes that was beautifully presented ($14.00) and Lea indulged in the ‘Country Style Pancakes’ served with bacon, banana, whipped cream and maple syrup ($15.00). The coffee was great too! From this weekend they are introducing a great breakfast special of classic bacon and egg breakfasts for two people for just $15.00. The space is welcoming and accommodating, and venue managers Cameron and Fran are enthusiastic about a number of new initiatives, including their ‘six star’ high tea functions and the new courtesy bus. If you are thinking about organising a function, it's definitely worth coming and speaking to Fran who will be able to talk to you about the range of ways they could assist.

Great eats and treats to find locally! Beerwah Hotel
The Beerwah Hotel food philosophy
Last week GC&M News caught up with Venue Manager Steve Holmes. Steve reckons that one of the things that locals like about the hotel is that they are a family owned hotel, not one of the big corporates, they know their customers, so they can customise what’s on offer to suit. Steve said they also take pride in the fact that their delicious food features the freshest in local produce. This includes Nolan’s Private Selection
Chefs Ashwani Kumar, Locky Imnon and Saxon Mensinga-Warden with apprentice Jacinta Dwan
Tiarna Collins with Alana Frampton
steaks, lamb, pork and ham from Barry Family Butchers in Beerwah, Seafood from PFD in Palmwoods, chicken and eggs from Mountain View Poultry in Beerburrum, fruit and vegetables from the Produce Wholesalers in Coolum Beach, lettuces from Ironbark Hydroponics in Woodford, dairy from North Coast Milk in Maroochydore, and breads from Gold Coast Bakeries in Pelican Waters. “Our chefs take pride in the fact that everything we serve is fresh. There is no ‘packet to pan’ in any of our meals. We believe ‘Fresh is Best’,” he said. “Our chefs get in well before the Bistro opens each day to start the food preparation; from our chicken parmigiana’s and pizza bases, to our sauces, everything is made from scratch using nothing but the freshest ingredients.”
To create the famous Beerwah Chicken Parmigiana we order our 275 gram chicken breasts from Mountain View Poultry. We then remove the 50 gram tenderloin for use in salads and pizzas leaving a 225 gram breast which is then butterflied, lightly tenderised, floured and then given an egg wash. It is then lightly crumbed. We then shallow fry on the flat grill each chicken breast until it’s golden brown. Once complete, we top each breast with Barry Family Butchers local award winning Peachester Gold double smoked ham, napoli sauce and mozzarella cheese. The Parmigiana’s are then oven baked (not deep fried) until golden brown and served with your choice of beer-battered chips and salad or vegetables and mashed potato.

Get Up & Grow Strawberry time!
with Jade King
‘Tis the season for growing – Autumn! As usual, March has had some interesting weather happening. I was preparing for the torrential downpours, but instead have been battling the heat. Despite this, for the first time ever, the gamble I took in February, where I planted both late summer and early winter crops, appears to have paid off. The summer crops have loved the regular rain and it’s been warm enough for them to flourish. The corn is looking exceptional, along with the sweet potato, squash and some random rockmelons have taken off. On the basis we get to see a bit of autumn weather, now is the time to get into strawberries. This year I’m having my Agricultural Science students’ plant out a few different varieties to compare flavours and yield. I’m hoping this experience will show them a little about the costs, time and feasibility of commercial growing of organic strawberries, and compare this to commercial conventionally grown strawberries. My ultimate aim being that they gain an understanding that there is a place and need for both industries to thrive. Technically, Strawberries are a perennial so they should live for at least two years producing fruit in a home garden. However, in a commercial situation, especially when planted in plastic covered rows, the second year becomes more susceptible to disease, the soil needs replenishing and ultimately the plant does not yield as well, so it is best to start again. To prepare our patch we planted a green manure crop over summer and incorporated it in to build up the organic mater and nitrogen. We then dug in loads of composted chook manure and Organic Extra pellets. Once bedded up, we plant in a variety of healthy strawberry runners, water in well with Natrakelp and keep them moist with overhead watering until their roots become established. As for the maintenance, we just sprinkle some Organic Extra around each plant now and again at flowering time, along with some liquid Powerfish every fortnight. One key thing to remember is to keep the moisture up once established by watering around the plant without wetting the leaves and fruit. In the commercial world, watering and fertigating (fertilising through irrigation) is easily achieved through t-tape that runs under the plastic and steadily drips straight to the root zone. Strawberries are also a great plant for kids to have a go at and are perfect for small spaces too. They can be planted in a pot, in an old wheel barrow or even in a big old toy truck, and if the kids take care of their plant the rewards at the end are sweet and healthy! Look forward to getting out in the garden when the weather cools off. Until next time, happy growing!
Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.

Dusky Coral Pea
Kennedia rubicunda Like some colour in your native garden? How about flashes of red? Try this long lived, hardy climber or scrambling ground cover. Its dusky redracemes of pea shaped flowers are produced from late winter to spring. As a climber in a larger tree, the vine and leaves are relatively inconspicuous, but the flowers, that are about 35mm by 15mm appear as clusters of dusky red to crimson throughout the tree. It is a vigorous grower and as a ground cover it can be used for rockeries, mass plantings and on trellises or pergolas. In good conditions, it can comfortably cover around 3m by 3m with dense foliage throughout the year. This plant will grow in full sun or partial shade and in a range of well drained soils. It is resistant to drought and has some frost tolerance. An interesting addition to any landscape.

Delightful 'Entertainer' Peachester home This delightful home set in the evergreen Peachester Country was built six years ago with four things in mind – comfort, practicability, entertaining and privacy. Mission accomplished! The spacious 350m2 low-set dwelling (plus 50m2 overhang) is sited on top of 1.293 hectares and enjoys hardstand right to the door. The construction of core-filled rendered block ensures excellent insulation and guarantees coolness in summer and warmth in winter.
Of course the breezes and reverse cycle airconditioning back-up temperature control when nature is extreme. The kitchen is a defining feature of the house with its size, easy cupboards and extensive bench space - not to mention the views and open internal window to the servery and sunroom. There is no restriction to the fridge space - or the views. Two well appointed large bedrooms are complimented by an ensuite and bathroom respectively whilst the spacious laundry leaves little to be desired. The internal triple garage complete with coated floor could easily provide more bedrooms and the adjoining games room of 79m2 could accommodate a studio for dance or art, a home business office or more bedrooms if required. The games room, patio and sunroom provide brilliant entertaining areas for people of all ages, easily monitored from the kitchen-dining-lounge
room with the help of large glass doors opening to the patio. Bird life is abundant and the wallabies are a constant delight. Apparently the Easter Bunny was spotted on Saturday night - and he winked! Glass House Mountains State School Main Hall - Sun 4.30pm
Dr Percy Harold - Seventh Day Adventist Church Well, the most popular time for Australians to attend church has passed. Easter has come and gone. What are we to make of this festival of faith, worship and adoration? Was it just because the moon was full? Was it because of a Passover event? Was it just that regular four day holiday we have on our calendars sometime in March or April each year? The common theme each Easter involves four events: the crucifixion, the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What an outpouring of faith occurs! What a demonstration of belief in the Son of God! But what if all this was a cunningly devised fable as some would contend? I have believed since I was seven years old attending the little Baptist church in Banyo. Now as a very matured adult by age, I still believe in the Jesus of the Bible. Now it is not just the faith of a little child. The answers to the questions of Jesus very existence and his life in the Middle East close to 2000 years ago are solid. Historians such as the Jewish Josephus, the Roman senator Tacitus, and Pliny the Younger all attest to the fact that Jesus did actually exist and caused a revolution in

belief at that time. Documents unearthed in city rubbish tips at archeological sites in Egypt by the hundreds give confidence to the Gospels and their story. Over 17 thousand early documents from the languages of the surrounding nations of the Middle East and Africa date Jesus at that time also. So dramatic was the change that time as we know it was dated as from Before Christ (BC) or Anno Domini (AD). The Bible records hundreds who saw Him after his resurrection. Historically the tomb was known to be empty even though guarded before by Roman Soldiers. And then there is the change in lives by so many millions who have come to encounter and experience the generous and gracious Jesus in their lives. A recognition and acceptance of that gift from God brings hope and assurance. As for me, it is amazing.

Sport Maleny Rangers FC
Contributed by Jody Hegarty Under 9 Meteors - played away against Caloundra Liverpool at Caloundra. With new members to the team this season, the Maleny Rangers FC U9 Meteors all came together and showed fantastic ball skills among the team. Unfortunately Maleny was defeated 6- 2. Under 12 Boys - Game 1 - Saturday, March 5 The first game of the season saw the Maleny rangers FC U12 boys play Caloundra in a home match at Maleny. We came off at half time leading 4-0 however the final score was 4-6. Game 2 - Saturday, March 12 The boys come up against Bribie Island at home. They played a strong and impressive game and managed to keep Bribie scoreless for the entire match and came away with a win 2-0. Game 3 - Tuesday, March 15 The third game of the season saw the Maleny Rangers FC U12 boys play on a Tuesday night at Buderim to make up for games missed at Easter time. Buderim won 5-1 however all credit to the Maleny boys, that 1 goal was the first one Buderim had conceded all season.

APRIL 6 2016
Game 4 - Saturday, March 19 Currently sitting 7th on the ladder, the Maleny Rangers FC U12 boys were desperate for a win. The first half of the game was a fairly evenly contest, with Jack English scoring the only goal for Maleny. A penalty saw Josh Skull scoring from the penalty spot and Dylan Campbell scoring three goals. Other goals of the match were scored by Elijah Flavell, Matthew Hood, Cameron Page and Coby Schmeichel, all of whom are new players to our Maleny club. Under 12 Girls - the team travelled to Caloundra for their first game of the season. They put in a tough fight with some brilliant plays up the wing to see them come away with a 2-0 win! Player of the match goes to Charlotte for her determination on the wing. Under 14s Girls - the team played away from home against a very strong Buderim team. They had their work cut out for them defending against this team, unfortunately they couldn't come away with a win. Player of the match goes to Mia for jumping into goals without hesitation when our regular goalie was injured. Under 14’s Boys A fantastic win for the team against Sunshine Coast
Grammar, even though most of the team members are playing up a year level, they presented a united, strong defence against a much bigger team. Grammar got in early with a goal in the first few minutes, but then some solid attacking from the Maleny side saw the score 2-1 at half time. Great passing and positioning from Nik got the score even, and then a determined run from Ben Lees gave us the lead. The boys played hard, never missing an opportunity and gave their best throughout the game. JJ, the team captain, kept everyone focused and working together. Twice more Ben got the ball, and took it for a run past Grammar’s defence. There were several shots at goal and we were unlucky not to score more. Our Maleny Rangers FC goalie, Alec, a newcomer to the game, has done a fantastic job this season and is a natural at keeping the ball out of that net. The final score was 5 - 2, following a well-directed corner kick from Matthew which deflected off a Grammar player and went in, with only seconds to full time! An exciting and well-played game, great work Maleny Rangers FC U14 boys!

San Taekwondo Team Kicking Along
Students from San Taekwondo clubs in Beerwah, Maleny and Kenilworth had their first opportunity for the year to test for their new belts last Thursday night. Thirty three students gathered at the full-time San Training centre in Beerwah forgrading. “It was one of the biggest grading’s that San has ever held,” said head instructor Norm Taylor. Overall the standard was very impressive with many parents commenting on how entertaining it was to watch. Grading is designed to test skills, fitness and ability to apply what they have learned through performing a series of drills, sparring and breaking timber. Self-control and endurance is also essential with the grading lasting up to two hours. There were many outstanding performances on the night but best grading performance medal went to now blue belt Ted Langley after he showed outstanding focus and great technique. Instructors were encouraged by the high standard and by the large number of adults who were grading. Several of the grading students will be part of a large team contesting the Pan Pacific Masters Games, to be held at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast in November. Participants must be over 30 to enter. It is a great atmosphere with mature players from all around the pacific region competing and having fun.

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
George and Sheila There were two elderly people, George and Sheila, living in a caravan park. He was a widower and she a widow and they had known one another for a number of years. One evening a supper was held in the communal refectory and the two found themselves at the same table. As the meal progressed, George made several admiring glances at Sheila and he finally gathered his courage to ask her, “Sheila, will you marry me?” After about five seconds of careful consideration, Sheila answered. “Yes. Yes, I will.” Next morning, George was troubled: “Did she say ‘yes’ or did she say ‘no’?' He couldn't remember.
Not even a faint memory. So it was with some trepidation that he phoned Sheila. Firstly, he explained that he didn't remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he gained a little more courage, George inquired gingerly, “Sheila, when I asked if you would marry me, did you say ‘Yes’ or did you say ‘No’?' George was delighted to hear her Sheila say, “why, I said, yes, yes I will and I meant it with all my heart.” Then she continued, “I am so glad that you called, because I couldn't remember for the life of me who had asked.” Submitted by Kim, Reesville

SAGITTARIUS November 23– December 22 With your star sign being fire energy and mixing this week with the fiery New Moon in Aries, beware of ultimatums. CAPRICORN December 23– January 19 There are more than one or two pressures in the next few days forming about that is really in charge, and leading up to a dominant power struggle. It is best you stay quietly in command, not controlling as improvement is around the corner. The new Aries Moon sets off desires for changes on the home front. AQUARIUS January 20– February 19 This could be a month of drama for some Aquarians who thrive on the exciting, progressive and unexpected changes that may come about by the New Moon in Aries. You will head into the bigger picture vision of which you stay pointedly committed. Overall everything should feel invigorating. Be practical! PISCES February 20– March 20 There is some impulsive behaviour when it comes to having the New Moon in Aries in the first week of April. However, it is also a fresh start and time to grow your garden or practical resources. Keep a high enthusiasm about your own self-worth. Look for the most interesting connections and opportunities.
