Hi Everyone Well it’s our first edition for December – so it’s official, the festive season is now in full swing and I have already been to two Christmas parties and sung some Christmas Carol’s out loud! I do know that I am a very bad singer and cannot carry a tune and generally when I start to sing, Brownie politely reminds me that while there are many things I do well, singing isn’t one of them. I have to say I was reminded just how true this is when last week at the Probus Christmas Party Christmas Carol Singalong (yes I do have a very varied job), I was getting quite into my rendition of Good King Wenceslas when the musicians suddenly stopped and apologised that they were playing ‘O Come O Ye Faithful’. The really sad part is I had no idea. I should explain I wasn’t doing a

Solo performance but I am a bit worried that I am the only one who didn’t notice the difference between the two tunes? My apologies to anyone sitting near me on the day, and for those of you going to the Christmas Carols at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, December 17, if you see me arriving I would suggest you might want to put your picnic rug down quite a distance from me!

One of Beerwah’s most iconic organisations that’s been operating for more than 60 years is in desperate need of community support. The Beerwah Country Women’s Association are seeking help to renovate their hall, built in 1947, and are also looking for new members to join their branch. Just eight members are continuing the CWA tradition of improving education, health and welfare in the lives of women and children, including President Donna-Kay Donovan. “We would dearly love some new members to join, to help us to really make a difference in the community,” Ms Donovan said. “We do have our cooking, competitions, craft, sewing and photography, but the CWA is so much more than that.” The CWA provides many services including accommodation to those in need, awards bursaries to students, holds educational sessions and fundraising activities. However, with a hall that’s in dire need of a new paint and window-work, Ms Donovan said it limited the use of the hall when hiring it out. “To have it repaired would mean a lot, we could give back more to the community," she said. “If we had better facilities there’s the possibility of being able to hire out the hall more frequently,

Have your say on the Bruce Highway’s future

CARPET - VINYL

Local motorists are being encouraged to provide feedback on the draft plan for the future upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. Transport and Main Roads Regional Director, Dennis Tennant encouraged residents and road users to visit staffed and fixed public displays until January 31and have their say. The draft plan proposes upgrading the Sunshine Motorway and Caloundra Road interchanges, and widening the highway from four to six lanes between the interchanges. The Sunshine Motorway interchange will be upgraded as a priority, and will include a 20-metre high flyover for motorists travelling from the Sunshine Motorway north onto the Bruce Highway. The plan also proposes a western service road by extending Frizzo Road to connect to Steve Irwin Way in the south, and Tanawha Tourist Drive in the north. Mr Tennant said during the display period there will be project team members at Chancellor Park Marketplace and Kawana Shopping World to discuss the draft plan and answer questions. Feedback from the displays will be considered along with the results of traffic, engineering and environmental studies, and used to develop a final plan for the project. The Bruce Highway is a federally funded road. “Following community consultation, we will review the draft plan to incorporate feedback before preparing a submission to the Australian Government for funding consideration for future project phases,” Mr Tennant said.

Your chance to have a say on Beerwah’s future If you have an opinion on how you want to see Beerwah and its surrounds grow and develop into the future, don’t miss your opportunity to make your voice heard at Council’s ‘Have your say’ event this weekend. On Saturday, December 10, Council will host a ‘Have your say’ event in the grassy area between the Beerwah Marketplace and Supa IGA from 10.00am - 12.00noon. Come down and speak to the Council staff, and bring the kids along for a bounce on the jumping castle. Council’s project manager Jamie Franklin said the event was part of Council’s four year Place Making Project. “The SEQ Regional Plan nominates Beerwah as a Major Activity Centre, and with its population expected to double to over 8,000 by 2031, Council has a four year focus on Beerwah to coordinate its future,” Jamie said. The event follows a workshop held at the Beerwah Community Hall late last month, where around 80 people attended with some great comments and feedback. “Council is enthusiastically engaging in and around Beerwah to uncover the community's hopes and dreams, likes and dislikes, plans and visions for a bright future for the town,” Jamie said. “Passion is running high, with lots of feedback flowing in.” The next stage of the engagement phase kicks off in February 2012, where residents will have an opportunity to be part of a focus group to analyse the information collected in the first engagement phase. Other consultation activities will include capturing the thoughts of rail commuters as they hop on the train to Brisbane or Nambour, filming comments and capturing a sense of the history and heritage of Beerwah with long term residents, and talking to business owners about the commercial/ business elements of the Beerwah.

A childhood dream come true? For many children, it’s their childhood dream, but for Beerwah’s Luke Chapman, it’s a fulfilling career that he juggles alongside his ‘day’ job. Luke has been an auxiliary firefighter for the past 15 years, and although throughout that time he has also maintained a full time job as a mechanical operator and fitter, it’s his ‘other’ job, as a firefighter, which he says has proven to be both very rewarding and demanding. Luke said at the moment, there are only 11 firefighters at the Beerwah Fire Station, one of the busiest auxiliary stations in the region, and they are looking for at least five more volunteers to come on board. While the hours can be many and varied, and the tasks just as diverse, the team of auxiliaries are paid for their time and the many skills they acquire through regular and extensive training. And the best thing, you don’t need any special qualifications to become an auxiliary firefighter, however being a local resident in close proximity to the station, on Beerwah Parade, would most certainly help. So as long as you are: • Healthy and active • Hold Australian resident status • Want to help your local community • Live or work within five minutes of Beerwah Fire Station • Have or be willing to obtain a Medium Rigid vehicle licence • Enjoy working in a team environment • Able to respond to emergency incidents*, as well as being able to do one rostered shift every two weeks

Luke Chapman * It is highly desirable that your employer consent to releasing you at the time of an emergency incident. You may just be what the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is looking for, as an auxiliary firefighter at the Beerwah Station. Initial recruit auxiliary firefighter training commences in February / March 2012 over five weekends. Training and time worked for the QFRS is remunerated. For more information, check out the website at www.fire.qld.gov.au/employment/ auxiliary.asp or phone Area Commander Jeff Keating on 5420 7511.

Free Holiday Buses are back! Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with TransLink, will be providing free travel on all public bus services across the coast from Monday, December 26 to Sunday, January 8. The children at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School have been even more excited about being at school over the last two weeks. Each afternoon they’ve been bussed to Burpengary Aquatic and Fitness Centre for swimming lessons. “The staff there are just so friendly and great with the kids,” said Mrs Wendy Mitchell, Teaching Assistant with Year 3. “And it’s just so important that they learn the skills to keep themselves safe in the water. Especially with water being everywhere here in Queensland – dams and water tanks, as well as pools and of course the beaches! It’s great that they all learn so quickly what to do when they’re in danger,” she said. The Junior Primary Swimming Program involves all children in Years 1 – 3, and they learn in

small groups with several instructors at the same time. All children have improved greatly over the last fortnight. “It’s been great watching those who were really quite nervous at the start, confidently diving into the water now,” said Mrs Margaret Schull, Year 1 teacher. And the children’s opinion of the program? “We love it,” they said. “It’s so much fun to be going swimming with all of our friends!”

Beerwah Kindy comes to a close for 2011 In the past week parents have been entertained by their children in the annual Kindy concerts. Not only did the children perform beautifully singing and dancing, but a photo journey of the year bought a tear to many a parents’ eye. Santa has also visited Kindy recently for Santa’s Grotto. Thank you to all who supported this event as it proved to be a wonderful fundraiser for the Kindy. Also a big thank you to Santa for his time at this busy time of the year! Over the year there have been many activities for the children to participate in. All the children will leave with fond memories, ready for the educational journey ahead of them thanks to the wonderful staff at Beerwah Kindy. Thank you to Michelle, Katie, Leeanne and Elaine for the tireless effort you put in each day to make Kindy an amazing experience for our children.

The annual Year 10 Dinner Dance took place on November 25 at the Beerwah Community Hall. The setting sun made the perfect backdrop for the guys and girls to show off their beautiful dresses and suits. The event was a family affair of fun, food, laughter, friends and dancing. Dancing began with the elegant tango and then moved onto the progressive up-beat rockabilly. Students had been practicing their moves all term and couldn’t wait to show their families how well they could handle themselves on the dance floor. Everyone joined in and even

Gabriella Thomas, Laura Barthelemy and Kirsten Post Principal Mike Curtis showed them how he could groove with the best of them. During a dance break, form teachers Mr Neil Capps and Miss Colleen Devitt, took it in turns to read out light-hearted citations about each student. One classes citations had all been done in the theme of Mr Men and the tables rocked with laughter. The students were surprised by their teachers’ accurate insights into their personalities. A delightful two-course dinner was served with choices of roast beef or chicken followed by mini chocolate puddings or sticky date pudding. Overall the night was a great success; filled with smiles, laughter and most importantly, family and friends. This night was definitely one to remember.

Camping out for Steve Irwin Day Written by: Matthew Jones (7A2) and Evelyn Martin (7A2)

The Beerwah state school student councillors had a camp out on November 17 for Steve Irwin Day to commemorate Steve Irwin’s life and to also raise money for Wildlife Warriors. An Australia Zoo employee named Murray came to the school and told the students about the zoo, the hospital and native animals and how they can

help to save the environment and animals. The next day the school held a fundraising day called Khaki Day and raised $208.20 for Wildlife Warriors. There was also a raffle and all the profits went to the same cause. The winner of the raffle was Miss L Bazzley and in the raffle we sold over 100 tickets.

Christine Magee

Against the judgement of ‘those who know better’, Glasshouse resident Christine Magee embarked on a journey that plunged her straight into the unknown when she visited internet pen-pals in North America. She assumed the trip would be friendly and civilised but each location brought a vastly different set of circumstances, some of which saw her screaming right out of her comfort zone. Christine’s willful determination and warmhearted empathy carried her through, gratefully finding friendship and enjoyment from unexpected sources. One pen-pal planned a rigid program that had to be followed without variation. Another friend was trapped in an intolerable situation that shocked and alarmed Christine. A third pen-pal was generous in time and travel but suffered a bad-tempered and selfish wife who made Christine’s visit unwelcome. The events and incidents range from the hilarious to the horrendous in surroundings that vary from outstanding natural beauty to domestic squalor and decadence. This is a ‘warts and all’ account of Christine’s experiences from Alaska to Mexico and several points in between. As with many things in life, she only realised what she had gained after the journey was over. Christine has used the pseudonym ‘Kathryn Delaney’ for her first book which is in an easyto-read, comfortable style that will appeal to both would-be travellers and those who enjoy life experiences of others. Christine has written short stories and has won several writing competitions. Blessed with a vivid imagination and a love of theatre, she has derived a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction penning two-act comedies for the amateur stage. Christine is no stranger to acting herself and is an accomplished speaker. The book, $19.95, is available for purchase via the website www.infinitelymoreinteresting.com or email kathryn@infinitelymoreinteresting.com It is hoped the book will soon be available for purchase on Amazon.com and e-books.

Computer storm protection With summer and the ‘storm season’ upon us, it is timely to talk about protecting computers from power surges and black outs. The best form of PC protection is at all times to be plugged into a quality UPS (uninterruptable power supply). This is a surge protector and voltage regulator with a back up battery. The better ones actually talk to your PC via USB, so when power drops out, the UPS instructs the PC to close all programs safely and then shut down, all under battery power. For Laptop users, this is not such great concern, however, plugging into a surge protector may just save your power adapter and in some severe cases your laptop. With no UPS, if you‘re lucky enough to be home before a storm hits, you should power down your PC and unplug it from the wall. But, that isn’t all; the most vulnerable route for a voltage spike is through your telephone line, so also unplug your line to your ADSL modem if you have one. For further information and details, visit www.mooloolahpc.com.au. For purchases or help after power losses, phone Gus, your local PC man, at Mooloolah Computers on 0405 125 662.

Community Engagement

Peachester History Committee

Bruce Highway Upgrade Planning Study (Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway)

The Festive Season The custom of gathering as a community to

celebrate Christmas and the New Year has a long history in the Peachester district. From the time when the early pioneers built the first School of Arts in 1889, we read of regular functions – dances, concerts and card evenings – occurring throughout the year. Then to mark the end of the school year there was the big community event, ‘breaking-up day’, which was attended by the children and their families, as well as friends and neighbours. The end of year school concert shared by Peachester and Commissioners Flat Schools became a tradition in the 1950s and 1960s – an event attended by the whole community, and still fondly remembered by the generation who benefited most from Father Christmas’ attendance at these occasions. Before barbecues became the preferred mode for informal celebrations, it seems that picnics were popular for family and community gatherings. Our historical photograph collection includes numerous large picnic parties, from the early 1900s to the 1950s. They show local families gathered in the Stanley River Park and other picnic spots along the river or at various homes and farms. The photograph below commemorates the New Year’s Day picnic at the Breton family home in 1940. Nev Anning recalls in Peachester Pioneers….. ‘For many years on New Year’s Day there was a district picnic at Bretons’ place. The ladies excelled with their cooking, and we were supposed to eat the lot so no one would be offended. After partaking of all that good food, everyone joined in games and sporting activities. Of course there was a wood chop, being at Bob’s place, but the main event was the greasy pole high up over the water hole, where the competitors had to come from either side with a pillow each, and it was a fight to the finish, usually with both in the water.’ Over the last 25 years a modern – although less energetic – tradition has developed: the annual Christmas Barbecue at the Peachester Hall. This event, hosted by the Hall Trustees and History Committee, is an opportunity for all residents, old and new, to enjoy some fellowship and catch up with their neighbours during the festive season. This year’s Christmas Barbecue will be on Sunday, December 18 at the hall, starting at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome! For more information, contact Bruce Page 5494 9557 or Howard Walker 5494 9564.

Transport and Main Roads is seeking community feedback on a draft plan for the future upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. The planning focuses on: • upgrading the Bruce Highway/Sunshine Motorway interchange • upgrading the Bruce Highway/Caloundra Road interchange • widening the Bruce Highway from four lanes to six lanes between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway • providing a western service road by extending Frizzo Road to Steve Irwin Way in the south, and Tanawha Tourist Drive in the north. To find out more about the planning, visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au (search “Bruce Highway Planning Study). Have your say We invite you to comment on the draft plan. Your input will help shape future planning for the upgrade. Visit a public display Public displays will be held during December 2011 and January 2012. Doing Business

Five minutes with ….. Harry and Lyn Atkinson of Beerwah Small Engines Beerwah Small Engines is a family owned and operated business that we started up in July 1977. For the first 18 months the business operated from a shed at our home in Simpson Street, moving in 1979 to its present location at 7 Beerwah Parade. In the beginning our product range was small compared to what it is now. Brushcutters had only just come on the market, and blowers and polesaws were unheard of. Our product range now covers most outdoor power products, such as ride on and domestic mowers, chainsaws, brushcutters, hedgetrimmers, blowers, polesaws, pressure cleaners, chipper shredders and generators. We deal only with reputable brands like Stihl, Greenfield, Cox, Masport and Hustler. We carry a large range of spare parts for the products that we sell, and have a fully equipped workshop with qualified mechanics. In recent years there has been an influx of ‘limited life’ products, sold by non-servicing stores with no concern for service or spare parts for these products. It has always been our policy to only sell products that can be serviced.

The staff of Beerwah Small Engines

You cannot have good service though without good staff and the crew at Beerwah Small Engines are by far our best asset. Please call in, check out our products, have a chat to our staff and judge for yourself. Beerwah Small Engines, 7 Beerwah Parade, phone 5494 6644.

DECEMBER 7 2011

Last week I attended the Sunshine Coast Council’s first working committee meeting to form a new Action Plan for the Pumicestone Passage. The Pumicestone Passage is more than 1,100 sq kilometres and forms part of the greater Morton Bay Marine Park. It also forms a natural and picturesque border to our region to the east. The Action Plan our Council intends to prepare will focus on land management issues and the impact on the health of this important Marine Park. It was great for me to be a part of the meeting representing the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce and to be involved in the formulation of the management plan. As the plan progresses, with more meetings to be held, I will be able to keep you all informed of the progress.

Glasshouse Country Menshed Contributed by Bob McLean

The Glasshouse Country Menshed is now coming up to a break for Christmas. This will be approaching our second anniversary when we gather again on January 18. The Menshed has maintained a stable membership, with around 20 men coming along each Wednesday morning to work on various projects and to enjoy each other’s company. The Menshed after two years has now developed into a strong group providing a variety of activities for the men to engage in. In recent months the men have been going through a skills training program. The training programs have been in welding (stick and gas), hand tools (use and care), power tool (use and care), wood lathe (use and tool care) and workshop safety. The men have also been engaged in leather work, whip plaiting and small engine repair where the men will take two or three machines and build one operating unit to be sold through the community markets at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre. The Glasshouse Country Menshed, in partnership with Community Recycling Inc, the operators of the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre, is also supported by Beerwah Lions and the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains. The men will gather on December 14 for a Christmas lunch starting at 10.00 am until the men run out of ‘hot air’ or it’s time for a ‘nanna nap’. We would like to invite any men who are new residents of Glasshouse Country to join the men and meet some great blokes. The Glasshouse Country Menshed wishes all residents of Glasshouse Country a happy and safe Christmas Bob and John inspect new and New Year. Contact donated lathe, with Mick Bob on 0427 606 240 and Pete on the drop saw for more information.

We will open each Thursday from 10.00am - 12.00noon for emergency relief and bread and food distribution for those in need during the period we are closed. A roster of all the centre’s opening times over the period will be on the door. All our usual services are available until we close for the year, internet access, free counselling, legal service (phone 5443 7827 for appointments), photocopying, phone and fax use, limited emergency relief, free bread and food, free internet use for job search, computer use, and reflexology (call 5494 0818 for appointment). Free computer help is available. Open times are 9.30am - 1.00pm Monday to Friday. Call in for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee. All welcome. A big thank you to all our volunteers who have staffed the centre during the year, including Ross for doing tax help, the cooking group, Tina for doing free counselling, Jack for reflexology, and Dave from Parklands Bakery for the donation of bread and other goodies. Also a big thank you to Bernd Kalup for all his work on our computers and equipment during the year. We would like to sincerely thank the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for our new computers, Sunshine Coast Council for our new photocopier and funds to continue operations, and all those who have supported us in various ways during 2011. We wish all our clients and volunteers a very happy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all in 2012. Until then, take care and drive safely wherever you go. www.gcnews.com.au

What are they thinking? Council’s recent decision making process must be questioned. Have councilors got cotton wool in their ears? They are not listening to the residents they have been elected to serve. One of the council’s reasons for refusal of McDonald’s application was Heritage. The proposed McDonald’s site is surrounded by an industrial estate and not in the ‘Heritage Heart’ of Landsborough. Employment and funding for road upgrades are not good enough reasons to approve this application. Heritage appears to be forgotten in the Mobile Tower approval, height restrictions not a problem, 500 metres from a school and day care centres no concerns, we have been told this tower will be good for us, it will meet our needs. Best of all it will be painted in an appropriate colour scheme. Does this mean out of site out of mind? Concerned resident Landsborough

Shame, Shame, Shame I would like to say to whoever damaged the donation tin belonging to Twinnies Pelican Seabird Rescue inc. ‘Well done’. The tin was at Coochin Creek Co-Op Beerwah and for the people who do not know the twins they are identical twins who rescue seabirds and native animals. They are on call 24 hours and are even willing to travel afar to rescue an animal. They are nonprofit and therefore need all the help they can get. They are hardworking, compassionate and give all the animals in their care the best that they can give. So if you are reading this and you know who are you are not only stealing from the twins but also from the animals. I hope you do not have the hide to call yourself an animal lover. DECEMBER 7 2011

I read that we're about to get a foot path between Australian Zoo and under a railway pass with gardens at a cost of a 1/2 million dollars plus. Also beautification of Beerwah at a cost of 3.5 million. Whatever happened to safety and infrastructure before beautification? Beerwah has a library, swimming pool, skate park, two high schools, Skippy park and variety of retail outlets. There are over 2,000 kids at Glass House and Beerburrum plus adults. There is a foot path between Glass House and Beerwah to be completed.

The Steve Irwin Way is dangerous to walkers and cyclists. I have been trying to talk to council about a cycle/footpath between Beerwah and Glass House for 20 years and I am not the only one. If you like to see healthy kids write to your local Councillor and Mayor. One email each week would be great — more if you like! Richard Plantinga, Beerwah

A happy and safe ending for snake fright turned snake bite I was just about to relocate pots in the garden when I was bitten by a brown snake on Tuesday, November 22 around 12.00noon. The snake was sleeping under one of the upturned pots and was frightened by my unexpected presence in ‘its bedroom’, so struck out in fright, biting me on the little finger on my left hand. It would be easy to allow panic to take control at that point, particularly with the well publicised recent deaths in Queensland from brown snakes. However with our three-year-old daughter, Cadence, present along with the clear goal of keeping venom movement through the body to a minimum, my husband, Grayson, and I immediately and very deliberately, chose a calm and quiet approach which actually allowed us to act more quickly. Grayson had a compression bandage firmly applied within one minute. Within two minutes the ambulance had been called. When the first ambulance arrived 10 minutes later, (a second ambulance, Caloundra Emergency Paramedics were called to transport me) I was maintaining an ‘absolutely still’ position while meditating on the lounge and Grayson was in the kitchen making lunch for our daughter. That’s not to say I wasn’t experiencing sensations of panic or doom; it’s hard not to feel fear, especially when you start to feel the physical effects creeping in – losing sensation in my hands and feet, constricted chest and difficulty breathing, dizziness – but for me it was more about quickly acknowledging the fear as inevitable and then moving on to really focus on calming the body to slow down venom movement. The most difficult moment of the whole experience for me was not the challenge of coping with the symptoms or the myriad of tests, needles, equipment or treatment – all which kept reminding me of the seriousness of the situation - it was kissing my daughter goodbye as I was being loaded into the back of the ambulance; watching her wave as we left the property – I’m sure the ECG machine took an even bigger dive at that moment. Our thanks and appreciation must go to both Beerwah Ambulance Service and Caloundra Emergency Paramedic Service for their quick response, medical care, great communication and good humour. Our thanks also to Nambour General Hospital’s Emergency Department, Resuscitation Team and Emergency Observation Ward for their skilled care, positive attitude and caring approach. Both Ambulance and Hospital personal commented on how great the initial first aid was and for that my love and thanks go to Grayson for his great bandaging style and to my daughter Cadence for being so brave. We also need to thank Bella Grace at Beerwah for taking in and caring for our daughter at such short notice and special thanks to Lindsay and Derrick Prentice for their prompt response and caring for her late into the night. You Said It

What’s going on?

Standouts for all the wrong reasons Two of our Federal politicians stand out above all others! Unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Our present PM Ms Gillard, was part of and involved in the conspiracy with others a short time ago, to dump the then PM Rudd and to claim the position as her right. This was viewed by many at the time, and still is, with suspicion about her principles, honesty and loyalty. She is now involved with the conspiracy which involved the standing down of the Labor Speaker in the House of Reps and his replacement by Peter Slipper. This was conceived solely in order to strengthen Ms Gillard's tenure on the PM's position and to similarly ensure the government’s fragile control of the House. Involvement in two such dubious activities in such a short period of time only enhances queries about her right to run this country in a suitable and acceptable manner. Now to the second stand out pollie. Slipper has been a controversial member of the LNP and viewed by many LNP members as someone who did not conform or instill confidence within the Party. The existing Labor Speaker resigned on November 24 and as no member of the government would accept the position (strange?), Slipper was appointed at a greatly enhanced salary to that of his previous backbencher status. He then resigned from the LNP which left the LNP one vote short of what it previously had. The previous Speaker joined his Labor backbenchers in the House which gave the Labor party one additional vote to what it had previously. The Labor party gained votes over the LNP in the (hung) parliament. For my part I still have serious doubts about Gillard's ability to manage, her honesty and her integrity. She appears to be willing to do anything to hold power and maintain the ego trip she feels she is achieving. As for Slipper, he appears to be a completely unprincipled, self indulgent type who because of his actions will be viewed with distain by his peers. A disgrace to Australia! J T Weeks Beerwah

DECEMBER 7 2011

I am astounded that the RSL club in Beerwah continues to advertise what they don't have. My husband, a keen punter went to the club a few months ago to spend the day in their TAB after seeing their advertisement that they had a TAB, only to find they didn't have it yet, but he was told he could place bets using his phone and then watch the race. Then last week they advertise Pokies online, so after a bad day I decided to go down to the club and have some time out, only to find they don't have them going yet. After asking the staff why they advertised they tell me the paper made a mistake and put the ad in the wrong week? What a load of rubbish, this is false advertising by the club and it’s not fair to the general public who waste their time going down under false pretences. But don't worry my husband and I won't bother to waste our time again. Kayla Thomas Beerwah

Editor’s note I would just like to clarify for readers that the advertising for the Beerwah - Peachester RSL Sub branch that appeared in Glasshouse Country News was booked into and appeared in the edition that was requested. However it is my understanding that the detail about the Poker machines being live included in the ad was based on advice given to the club by the professional installation staff that were completing that job and was not intended to mislead the community.

Customers urged to conserve Unitywater is urging customers to remain conscious of their water use. Unitywater Executive Manager Retail Judy Bailey said that as summer approached, usage was rising across the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions. Ms Bailey encouraged customers to conserve water and go to the Unitywater website for conservation tips. Residents and businesses should check their water meters every fortnight so they were aware of how much they were using and could identify potential problems like concealed leaks, she said. Top 10 water saving tips: 1. Read your water meter and check for leaks regularly. 2. Install water-efficient devices, especially shower heads. 3. Install a rainwater tank. 4. Make sure your washing machine and dishwasher are full each time. 5. Water gardens and lawns in the cooler times of the day and only water if you have to. 6. Choose drought-tolerant plant and lawn species. 7. Keep showers to less than four minutes. 8. Turn off the tap when cleaning your teeth. 9. Scrape plates clean instead of rinsing. 10. Don’t use running water to thaw food.

Living Well Music Today With our regular columnist, local musician Dr Michael Whiticker Over the last two months we have looked at song writing and how you might get started as a writer. If you are reading this column you might have even written a few songs and could be at the stage of wondering why it is that more people aren’t aware of your song writing talents. And the most likely reason is the lack of promotion. Before that begins however you need to have your product in a marketable form. In the case of a song it is a demo recording, but simply putting a microphone up and singing your song into it is unlikely to produce a marketable item. For a start you will need a reasonable singer and a good backing. Most small studios can provide these things for you at a very reasonable cost. Or you can possibly build the skills and do it yourself. This adds a time component and a bigger cost as you will need to purchase the studio equipment as well. The other advantage of working with a professional is that they can often assist you in making the songs sound better by working on the arrangement with you, playing or adding parts as needed. They will also tend to be objective about your work and encourage you to listen more critically, so you will develop a better ear. Once the work is recorded and sounds reasonably professional, you can sit back and compare it more favourably to recordings you respect and of course you can share your songs with your friends. Hopefully you will be encouraged and want to continue with your creative endeavours, and a year later you might go back into the studio to put down a couple more songs and consider how you have developed as a musician and song writer over that period. In this day and age we are finding that artists are able to break into the music scene without a recording contract and big company behind them. It is all about having a product for which there is a market and then targeting that market in your promotion. Next month we’ll look at how music software can assist you in building your skills as a musician while giving you a creative and fun outlet. Do have a stimulating musical month! Michael

Merry Christmas from Flexi-Rexi and Trixi-Rixi! Introducing Flexi Rexi and Trixi Rixi, the creations of local artist and musician Fran Watts. These colourful, original characters are just the thing to brighten the walls of little ones, and would make a perfect gift for Christmas! Flexi-Rexi, an exercise worm, was inspired by Fran’s two year old son. Flexi-Rexi is the subject of a number of short stories that Fran originally wrote for her son, while Trixi-Rixi is his female equivalent, and just loves to play dress ups. Thanks to Fran, GCNews has four Flexi Rexi and four Trixi Rixi printed canvases to give away, just in time for Christmas. To go in the draw, simply send us an email to reception@gcnews.com.au or write in to PO Box 99, Beerwah, 4519 by 5.00pm, Monday, December 12. Don’t forget to include your name and contact phone number. Please note winners will be required to collect their prize from our office at 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, before close of business Friday, December 16. The Flexi Rexi and Trixi Rixi colour canvas prints are available for purchase from All About Me in Landsborough, and S and G Furniture in Beerwah.

Things 2 Do

Beerwah’s Got Country, and The Rain

There are only three of them but The Rain is a musical storm – a force to The Rain be reckoned with – and once those three-part harmonies and easy on the ears songs penned by powerhouse writer Kelly Cork soak into your bones, you’re hooked. Guitarist/vocalist Kelly Cork, drummer/vocalist Ian Belcher and bass player/ vocalist Greg Eastwood are three friends and musical associates who love what they do – and do what they love as often as possible, taking The Rain wherever it’s required to breathe life and music into this wide brown land. The Sunshine Coast-based trio started 2011 on a high note with a swag of successful performances at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, showcasing their new album, ‘One More Shot’. As if promoting a new album isn’t enough to keep these three friends on the hop, The Rain is also recording fresh songs specifically for movie soundtracks and a TV series to be marketed to publishers in the USA. The recordings will be completed in the studio of renowned motivational speaker and body language expert, Allan Pease, a major fan of The Rain. With their sights set on a number of festivals around the country in 2011, you’re sure to catch The Rain somewhere soon. Catch them at the Beerwah Hotel on Saturday, December 10 from 8.00pm. www.therain.com.au

Rollicking rascals Rapskallion at Crystal Waters Rapskallion are once again taking to the eastern road this summer; pedalling their new five track E.P ‘Le chat et Fiddle’ from Melbourne town to Crystal Waters in a blaze of sweat, colour, feathers and accordion powered riffage. ‘Le Chat et fiddle’ (The Cat and Fiddle) is a collection of musical vignettes from a realm inhabited by back alley gangster felines, femme fatales, and silver moon maidens, with a soundtrack somewhere between a Chicago speakeasy, a Hungarian hoedown, and a Halloween party at a south seas pirate haven. The buccaneers gone electric have extracted these five songs from their upcoming full length release, ‘Vagabond King’, which will be available on vinyl and CD in March 2012. Rapskallion shall be exploding onto The Deck at the Crystal Waters Eco Village, Sunday, December 18. Entry $10.00, kids 16 and under free. ‘Le chat et fiddle’ is now on sale and available through Rapsakllion.com. Treasure in Beerwah

There are treasures to be found every Saturday at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Facility. It’s inspiring wandering around the gardens and market area, and it has made me realise the added value of recycled goods. I’ve picked up so many bargains at the facility; it’s surprising what people throw out. Everything has a value, even if you don’t think it’s worth anything, someone else might think they have found gold. I encourage everyone in the area to deliver their unwanted materials to the resource recovery facility rather than going straight to the rubbish tip. It really is a wonderful facility and is an important resource for the residents of Beerwah and surrounds who want sustainable options when they clean out the family garage. Beerwah Resource Recovery Facility is open seven days a week from 8.00am to 5.00pm. The recycling market is open 9.00am to 4.00pm every Saturday

Curves of Beerwah donates to breast cancer awareness

Curves of Beerwah recently raised over $1,363.00 from fundraising efforts in their local community to benefit Breast Cancer awareness in October. "While we work to improve the lives of the women in the Beerwah area through Curves, we also feel it is important to reach out to others in our community," said Linda, owner of Curves of Beerwah. According to Linda, one of Curves of Beerwah’s goals is to foster community involvement through charitable efforts. “We also support other organisations throughout the year. At the present time we are supporting two families for Christmas through the Salvation Army,” Linda said. "It’s apparent to us that Breast Cancer awareness cares about the lives and the health of the people in our community. We are proud to be able to partner with them to help the Beerwah community. “Our members are always so very generous with every fundraiser we have, and I would like to thank each and every one of them for their great support during such difficult times.” For more information on Curves’ donation efforts, or to become a member contact Linda Bibo at 5494 0455.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

As Christmas rolls quickly towards us, our attention can tend to focus on what gifts we would like to receive from our loved ones. I am reminded of the story of a young boy; let’s call him Danny, who had set his heart on getting a new bike for Christmas. Unfortunately his family couldn't afford a new bike. He kept pestering his mother who eventually, in exasperation, suggested that he write a letter and pray to Jesus for the bike. ‘Dear Jesus,’ he wrote, ‘I've been a good boy this year and would appreciate a new bike. Your friend, Daniel’. Upon reflection, he realised that Jesus would know that he hadn't been such a good boy at all. So he tore up the letter and tried again. After a number of failed attempts at writing an honest letter he gave up and ran to the Church. There he grabbed a statue of Mary, took it home, and hid it under his bed. Then he sat down and wrote these words. ‘Jesus let’s face it, I've broken most of the Commandments: tore up my sister's doll, and lots more. I'm desperate. I've got your mother Mary. If you ever want to

Buddies Refugee Support group

see her again, give me a bike for Christmas. You know who.’ There is a little bit of Danny in each one of us. We often think we can bargain with God to get the best possible deal out of life. The problem with this bargaining image is that it cannot be reconciled with a Christian faith that is expressed in the Bible. In the scriptures we find God has not held back one single thing in his love for us. By becoming one with us in our flesh, God has done everything he possibly can to assure us of his love. He has shown us all that we can be shown about how to live lives of sacrifice, justice and love and how to change our world for the better. The image of us ‘doing a deal’ with God is so prevalent in our prayers we find ourselves continually making empty promises to God. ‘If I get better I'll lead a better life.’ Or, ‘I'll start going to church if I get the job I need.’ Dreadful stuff. The God of the Bible is a God who gives unconditionally even to sending His son as a babe. This is hardly the profile of a deal doer. It is the portrait of a lover. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

TIME AND PAPERWORK: LEAVE IT TO YOUR MORTGAGE BROKER Smartline’s mortgage brokers are spending more time preparing loan applications and gathering sometimes hundreds of pages of supporting documentation to secure loans for clients – leaving ‘no stone unturned’. That’s good to know, because there’s a range of factors that can see a loan application being refused. But, the trend indicates that the more information and documentation you can provide, the better the chance of having an application approved. While it’s certainly more challenging and time-consuming – especially for those who aren’t familiar with lenders’ conditions www.gcnews.com.au

and requirements – it doesn’t mean that obtaining a loan is impossible. It does highlight the importance of quality advice to give you the best chance of securing your loan and purchasing a property. Considerations impacting lenders’ decisions Credit scoring is just one consideration impacting lenders’ decisions and although it has been around for a while, the credit scoring formula is becoming increasingly complex and relies upon every piece of customer data – so it has never been more important to complete every single section of the

application form. In some instances an applicant might lose points for seemingly simple things like not having the ‘nearest living relative in Australia’ field filled in – even though it’s not mandatory. While employment details and stability used to be the keys to a successful loan application – including employment history, having minimal unsecured debt, strong ability to service a loan, a clear savings history and a deposit – lenders now want to see evidence that applicants have a ‘reliable character’. For example, lenders don’t want to see too many credit inquiries,

which can lower your credit score. Likewise, while an applicant’s net asset position has always influenced the way banks lend money, this has become increasingly important. The rules are always changing Lenders’ rules about how they assess loan applications are in a state of constant flux. It’s not unusual for lenders to change their own requirements, and Australian Credit Licence No. 385325 we’re seeing a definite trend Call Adviser Teresa Harrison toward the requirement for more Ph 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 www.smartline.com.au/ and more detailed information. tharrison Using the services of an experienced mortgage broker can be helpful for borrowers keen to cover all their bases and make a good impression on lenders. Rising living costs are impacting Queenslanders’ ability to save, but the majority plan to make proactive, positive changes to their financial strategy in 2012, according to the eighth annual QLD Consumer Sentiment Survey from Mortgage Choice. The independent online survey uncovered the post November cash rate concerns, financial plans, home loan needs and more of 212 Queensland consumers. The biggest concern for respondents was ‘Other costs of living – utility bills, clothing etc’. This was followed by ‘Economic management at Federal Government level’, ‘interest rates’, ‘petrol prices’ and ‘fall in housing prices’. When asked about their confidence in the Australian economy for 2012, 56 per cent were ‘fairly confident’ or ‘very confident’, 24 per cent were ‘a little worried’,15 per cent were ‘not worried’, and five per cent ‘very worried’ - the highest of any state. When asked how they felt about their level of personal savings, 52 per cent of Queensland respondents were ‘unsatisfied’, 29 per cent were ‘satisfied’ and 19 per cent were ‘neutral’. Fifty three percent of the 115 Queensland mortgage holders surveyed plan to make changes to their financial situation in the coming year, compared to 55 per cent in 2010. The top five changes were: ‘cut back on my spending’, ‘review my budget’, ‘pay off my credit card/s’, ‘review my mortgage/s’, and ‘refinance my mortgage/s’. Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of the 97 Queensland non-mortgage holders surveyed plan to make changes to their financial situation in the coming year. The top five changes were: ‘review my budget’, ‘cut back on my spending’, ‘pay off my credit card/s’, increase my debt repayments’, and ‘take out a mortgage’. The current interest rate climate is encouraging a number of people to buy property, with 21 per cent saying they will be ‘more likely’ to buy if rates drop further in the next six months. Two per cent will be ‘less likely’ to buy, 30 per cent will not be ‘more or less likely’ to buy and 46 per cent are ‘not looking to buy’. Nearly half (48 per cent) believe the Federal Government is doing ‘not enough’ to encourage affordable housing.

Battling pests and diseases

The best way to fight pests and diseases is ultimately to have healthy, strong and stress free plants. Weak stressed plants undergo certain biochemical changes which actually boost insect health and subsequently attract them. Most gardeners would have noted that the weaker plants are often quickly infested by insect pests, whilst neighbouring stronger plants appear to suffer far less. Plants can be stressed by adverse environmental conditions such as drought and low nutrients. Consistent watering and good soil management can prevent this from occurring. Likewise, disease can readily effect weak plants and rapidly spread. For this reason, it is often recommended that you remove older plants that have past their prime as well as slow growing ones. This reduces the potential for other plants to become infected and prevents rapid spread of fungal diseases such as Powdery Mildew and Gummy Stem Blight. Another key way to prevent disease and pest build up is crop rotation. This is vitally important in particular for Solanaceae (tomatoes, potatoes etc.) and the six bed rotation I have previously detailed is recommended here in the subtropics. Personally, all the above is primarily what I do to prevent diseases in my garden and rarely do I need to opt for additional measures. However, even if you have super healthy plants and perfect crop rotation, it is inevitable that you will encounter problems from time to time that need to be managed. Pest control is another matter entirely and often takes more than just good management. My main battles lie with caterpillars and fruit fly. For caterpillars I use Dipel. Soaking the corn silks with Dipel works well to stop Corn Earworm from burrowing into the corn. Likewise, a general spray with Dipel over all the leaves of Brassicas prevents cabbage butterfly caterpillar devouring the plants. For fruit fly, I find using a home-made fruit fly trap (bottle with small holes at the top with liquid attractant inside) helps reduce numbers. However I also cover many of my crops to ensure protection. For example I bag trusses of tomatoes and wrap rockmelons in newspaper to prevent the fruits being stung. This takes a lot of work and patience, but is well worth the reward. Here are a couple of home recipes of organic sprays I have used for the most common problems with varying success:

I’d like to wish everyone a safe and blessed Christmas and a productive New Year! I look forward to continuing to share my productive garden adventures in 2012, until next time in ‘Get Up and Grow’.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club

Sports Results for week ending Sunday, December 4. The Ladies Division of the Bowls Club held their Christmas breakup luncheon on Wednesday at Club Glass House. Ladies President Noelle Dean invited all lady members and men bowlers who had supported the ladies bowls over the year to join her for a lavish morning tea. Special invited guests included Dina Van Der Meer, Jean Bishop, Eileen Young and Jim Osborne. Much respected older members of the Bowls Club. Noelle presented thank you gifts to the Immediate Past President, Millie Freshwater, the retiring Games Director, Marleen Bertram and to John McSwain for his umpiring duties during Ladies Club Championships throughout the year. A presentation was made to the winners of the Ladies Graded and Drawn Triples Championship. They were Lead, Jenny Hobson, Second, Rae Farrell and Skip, Di Hunt. The planned fun bowls were abandoned because of persistent showers and replaced with telling jokes and trivia questions until lunch was served. All in all, a fun and enjoyable day. The morning session of Thursdays Open Pairs was won by Rae Farrell and Di Hunt with runners up Ron Rix and Trevor Bertram. The afternoon session was rained out! Thursday bowls will still be played on December 8 and 15. Check sign-on sheets. Ladies Wednesday Bowls have finished for the year and will recommence on Wednesday, January 11, 8.30am for 9.00am start. Open Pairs will recommence on Thursday, January 12, 12.30pm for 1.00pm start. Presentation of Trophies night is December 10 at 6.00pm. Pre booking required.

We are coming to an end of another year and I would like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New. I would also like to thank all those people who helped the club during the year, especially the committee and our two groundsmen Merv and Brian for keeping the grounds in good order. We held our AGM and all positions were filled with Ray standing down as president after four years. Thanks Ray for your contribution to the club. We welcome Daniel, Matt and Russell onto the committee for 2012, as well as Piet, Candace and Jenny continuing for another year. Adult fixtures Monday, November 28 - the grand final was played in the SCTA night competition. We had our two teams, the Mungrals and Mystics both competing. Our Division two team, the Mungrals won by defeating Nambour Ninjas by five games. Congratulations. The Mystics were very unlucky as they tied 43 all against Mooloolaba Surfsiders and lost on sets. Well team we didn’t win and we didn’t lose!! Hope you all sign up in February next year for another great season of tennis. Our Christmas break-up for the juniors was a success. It was very hot but the kids didn’t mind throwing water bombs at Ray and Carolyn as part of the fun. We wish our juniors luck in their Saturday competition and hope they are enjoying their tennis. That’s all for this year. See you in 2012.

Raffle winner was Ian Henderson. Don't forget our Christmas lunch and Presentation at the Glasshouse Tavern. The courtesy bus will pick up at the Bowls club from about 11.00am. Get muscles pumping for strongman challenge

It’s time to get those muscles pumping ahead of the second annual Glasshouse Mountains Strongman Challenge on Saturday, January 7, 2012. The event, which will be held at Fitness Plus on Roys Road, Beerwah, at 2.00pm, will be MC’d by local Strongman competitor Tim O’Shea, and refereed by Sue Metcalf (international Strongwoman competitor) and Matt Aichholzer (Brisbane’s Strongest Man 2011). The event has been endorsed by the Federation of Australian Strength Competitors (FASC). Beerwah’s own Jarrad Gaudern made his Strongman debut at last year’s event, and hopes some more Sunshine Coast and Glasshouse Country residents will join him in 2012. This year’s event will have an under 90 kilograms and an under 105 kilograms joining the big boys in the opens. There is also a women’s division planned, depending on interest. Entry for spectators is free, and there will be a barbeque and drinks available for purchase. Athletes interested in competing should contact Jason Suna at Fitness Plus or email gmstrongman@gmail.com for an entry form. The Glasshouse Mountains Strongman Facebook page has further details about the event.

Sunfish Lifestyle Kids Fishing Day 2011 Contributed by David Brace, president

A Sunfish Queensland initiative gave members of Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc the privilege to host a Sunfish Lifestyle Kids Fishing Day recently. Andrew Kennedy, a hard working member of our stocking group and an accredited Sunfish instructor made the day possible, which was enjoyed by all. Twenty five lucky Year 6 students from Unity College at Caloundra West were given the opportunity to go fishing for the day at the Suncoast Barra Fishing Park at Bli Bli. The students were informed about identifying various species that live within the Sunshine Coast region, how to measure and properly handle these fish, and the various rules and regulations that need to be adhered to, and knot tying and rigging their rods. While Andrew captivated and informed the kids, other members sizzled snags over the barbeque for the kids’ lunch. With full bellies, the kids put their new found skills into practice with quite a few good fish being caught and lost. At the end of the day the kids were given a

Sunfish information pack with a fish rule, some lures and DVD’s that were donated by members of the stocking group and Barra Jacks Kawana kindly did a great deal for us to supply the kids with new rods for the day that they got to keep. One lucky little lady even landed an 83cm Barramundi on 9lb mono. I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all members who were lucky enough to be present, especially Andrew, and a special mention also needs to be extended to Sunfish Queensland, Unity College, Barra Jacks Kawana and to the Suncoast Barra Fishing Park.

A woman takes her 16-year-old daughter to the doctor. The doctor says, "Okay, Mrs Jones, what's the problem?" The mother says, "it's my daughter, Debbie. She keeps getting these cravings. She's putting on weight, and is sick most mornings." The doctor gives Debbie a good examination, then turns to the mother and says, "well, I don't know how to tell you this, but your daughter is pregnant - about four months, would be my guess." The mother says, "pregnant?! She can't be. She has never ever been with a man! Have you Debbie?"

Debbie says, "no mother! I've never even kissed a man, I'm still a virgin!" The doctor walked over to the window and just stood there staring out of it. About five minutes pass and finally the mother says, "is there something wrong out there doctor?" The doctor replies, "no, not really, it's just that the last time anything like this happened, a star appeared in the east and three wise men came over the hill. And there's no way I'm going to miss it this time!" P. Teirney, Beerwah
