JUNE 7 2017
Hi Everyone
O
kay, so today I am going to make a confession to you all: I could quite reasonably be considered not just a coffee lover, but possibly an addict and, even worse, it would appear I am now also an environmental vandal! Yes, I was horrified to learn this when I watched the third episode of the ABC series ‘The War on Waste’ when they hammered home the outrageous amount of single-use takeaway coffee cups that are going into landfill each year in Australia. My body was awash with guilt and then, making it worse is that I had purchased a recyclable hard plastic travel mug six months ago that I take filled with coffee from home, but not once have I asked any of the businesses that I go to if they are happy to serve my coffee in my own mug. Yep, as the fella on the telly said, why are we not bringing our own cups with us when we want to pick up a takeaway coffee? So this week I am asking other readers to start taking action as well. If you know the names of local cafes that are happy to use customers’ travel mugs, whether or not they even offer a reward/incentive (say 50c less for BYO travel mug), email me and in the June 14 edition we will include a write up about which cafes are already on board. Plus, hopefully our collective action can encourage others? Ahhh, I’m so happy to not have to miss my early and mid-morning caffeine hit! Regards,

The ABC television’s recent three part series the ‘War on Waste’ which finished last week has generated lots of discussion for many locals who are already concerned about some of the big waste related issues of single use plastic shopping bags, disposable fashion, recycling and the confusion around whether takeaway coffee cups are not recyclable. On the third show in the series there was a strong focus around why more of us don’t just “BYO travel mug” when we pick up a takeaway coffee and whether or not cafes are happy to offer this service and in some cases reward the positive action of their customers. When Co-owner and Head Brewer of Maleny’s Brouhaha Matt Jancauskas was watching the show he decided straight away that they would be encouraging customers to bring in their reuseable coffee cups and would be reducing the cost of their coffee by 50c for these motivated folk. GC&M News would like to do our bit to share the initiatives that our local coffee shops and cafes are doing to help save our environment. When I have walked in to Maple 3 at Maleny and seen the bags of used coffee grounds that they

Energex are assisting the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in response to multiple reports of stolen electrical equipment across the Sunshine Coast including in the Maleny areas. Aluminium and copper cable known as earth wire has been stolen from Energex equipment, items which play a vital role in ensuring community safety during storms by safely redirecting lightning into the ground. Alan Heald, Energex Field Services Manager North Coast, said the illegal activity endangers the lives of thieves as well as the local community, and is given the utmost attention by Energex and local authorities. “Stealing cabling from live electrical equipment poses the imminent danger of killing those performing the act and has potential safety implications for the surrounding community,” he said. “Earth wires are an imperative safety feature of

our infrastructure and those caught stealing or attempting to sell the metal as scraps will be dealt with by police. “Our cables are identifiable products and we hold relationships with scrapyard owners who recognise and alert both Energex and authorities to those attempting to sell the product.” A Sunshine Coast wide alert has been made as Energex workers replace the cable to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply to the region’s customers. Police investigations are continuing with Energex and the QPS encouraging anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious, or who comes into contact with the cable to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. “This activity is illegal, poses a serious threat to community health and safety, and will not be tolerated,” Mr Heald said. “We thank the community and QPS for their assistance in safeguarding Energex equipment and the future of our local communities.”

Riding for refugees Back in April GC&M news brought you the front page story of Beerwah local Lynda Utting who was planning to travel to Lebanon to participate in the Muskathlon, a 100km bike ride. Last week Lynda make contact once again to share her story about her journey with the Open Doors program to do the Muskathlon and to meet local partners who are working with the Syrian refugees and to visit the refugees in the camps. Lynda said the highlight for her (it was never just about the bike ride) was meeting the refugee families in camps and hearing their stories and encouraging them.
Each of the participants raised around $10,000 to donate to the refugees for their basic needs and provisions such as food, camp ovens, medical, schooling and vocational training, sports, ministry and counselling. “I was finally able to raise the $10,000 which was the result of an awesome response from so many. I am very grateful to all those who have supported my quest and gave so generously,” Lynda said. “You can believe me, this international aid and support is bringing life-changing results and many Muslim background believers are coming to faith in Christ as a result! “There is so much good that the church is doing in Lebanon!”

Benefit concert
The finish line
We came, we visited, we blessed and were blessed – and we will never be the same again
A community benefit concert highlighting domestic and family violence will be held at the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church, 50 Roberts Road, Beerwah this Saturday, June 10, from 7pm to 9pm. The concert is suitable for all the family and will feature local performers and guest artists including the Caboolture Community Choir. Lucky door prizes donated by local businesses are included as well as light refreshments. A guest speaker from Uniting Care Queensland will also be in attendance. All proceeds raised will go to support Sonshine Sanctuary, a crisis accommodation centre for women and children on the Sunshine Coast. Entry fees are: adults $10, children $5 and families $25. Violence against women is now recognised as a serious and widespread problem across Australia with enormous individual and community impacts and social costs. It is hoped that this fundraising event will in some way continue to raise awareness of this important issue and provide practical assistance in caring for victims of domestic and family violence. The concert is being sponsored by the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church. Contact Charles Russell 0407 142 962 for further information.

By Ursula Starkovsky, Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President For the past few weeks the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has been collecting information from businesses and residents about the lack of reasonable internet speed and reliability as well as mobile phone reception. We are pleased to say that we had quite a good response to our call for action. However, the business community’s response is sorely missed from the list of unhappy clients and we have received only a few. Question is, what does it take to make our business community take part in any venture that could be of significant benefit to their bottom line? We were asking about the experience anybody has with our Telcos, be it business or private. As everybody is aware, the chamber represents businesses and, in our mind, the lack of mobile reception and reliable internet connection would hurt any business. So why are the businesses not responding? On the grapevine you hear complaint after complaint, but to put it in writing seems to be too hard. The chamber urges the business community to come forward and send in the completed form or simply send us an email to info@ glasshousecountrychamber.com.au. You can get access to the form we provided by following the link on the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News website at www.gcnews.com.au/content/1191/ hotoffthepress.aspx or go onto the chamber’s
Information Session
Facebook page. We will be wrapping up mid June and will then release the information to Andrew Wallace, MP. If we can prove to the Telcos that there is a genuine problem, maybe we have a chance that they will upgrade the existing infrastructure despite the NBN being rolled out in the area in two to three years. After all, they are a business and are expected to serve their clients (not just their shareholders) in a businesslike manner.

Former Maleny resident Brett Hallam Holland will be performing solo at the Old Witta School Hall this Sunday, June 11, from 4pm. Entry is by donation. The songwriter and dynamic guitarist will be sharing songs from recent albums as well as new material from a new project, 'Fuse Box Social'. His songs cover topics from social issues (Who Gave the Right to Frack) to natural disasters (Shaky Isles), to unnatural disasters (Flooding in Nashville), to loss and love (World Of Goodbyes). A bit of humour is also thrown in the mix with
some comedic re-makes. Within his songs and instrumentals Brett’s fingerstyle guitar playing is diverse and energetic with a modern approach in his style. Mentored by Tommy Emmanuel, he incorporates two hand tapping, slapping, walking bass lines, harmonics, percussion, improvisation, odd times, and open tunings into his songs and arrangements that are big on groove and strong on melody. He draws on popular, rock, blues, jazz, country, and traditional music.

What's new
On the Australian road from east to west
By Sonia Clark Following on from our story in the May 24 edition about Beerwah couple Damian and Thelma Petrie, we have been receiving updates from them ‘on the road’ as they journey from east to west Australia. They enjoyed a good to run to Quilpie then encountered road closures due to flooding. However, from there to the border the roads were not too bad. Across the border into the Northern Territory, the numerous cattle road trains contributed to the deterioration of the dirt roads, resulting in slow going – sometimes only 10 kilometres per hour and the rough conditions caused some equipment failure issues. The couple have already passed Alice Springs and are now on the start of the longest leg of the journey, travelling along the Tanami Road for about 1,000km before joining the Gary Junction Road. Damian said, “We have seen some magnificent scenery as well as emus with four to five chicks, camels, wild horses, kangaroos and of course cattle. I’m surprised that we haven’t seen any dingoes yet!” From here it will be approximately 2,000km across the Gibson Desert to Marble Bar. As prepared as they can be, this leg of the journey will have only three Aboriginal settlements along the way for fuel, as well as access to only three water bores. Stay tuned for more updates!

Local artists adding a touch of colour
When driving around the Coast, you may notice a bit of extra colour popping up at many intersections. Sunshine Coast Council’s latest public art project will see 32 traffic signal boxes located right across the region given a creative coat of paint, including one at the intersection at Glass House Mountains. Council’s public art officer Julie Hauritz said the project was designed to celebrate our region through local voices. “As a part of the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast, we themed the project ‘Our Sunshine Coast’ to give local artists an opportunity to share what the Sunshine Coast means to them,” Ms Hauritz said. The artwork on the signal box at Glass House Mountains is titled ‘Silent Sentinels’ and was created by Wayne Smith. Urban Smart Projects, based in Maleny, initiate and manage traffic signal box projects in local councils all over Australia.

What goes where at the Street Party?
The ‘What Goes Where’ Committee recently met in Simpson Street to update the layout plans for this year’s Street Party in Beerwah. Fitting all the amusements, community group stalls, artisans, food vendors, and business/ tourism stalls has become easier this year, with the help of Beerwah Marketplace and Village. Not only has the shopping centre made room for more Street Party fun, the Centre Management has just become a Key Sponsor, allowing even more activities. Sunshine Coast Council has announced a Major Grant for the Street Party committee, which will help pay for the infrastructure required. The Beerwah Hotel as Major Sponsor and Glasshouse Country and Maleny News as Media Sponsor/Partner are also backing the organisers, so it is full steam ahead. The committee has been very pleased with the response from people wanting a stall site, but there is still room, so put your Expression of Interest in by June 30 so they have your up to date details. The EOI can be found on the website www.celebrateglasshousecountry.com.au under the What’s Happening tab. Please use the Street Party to promote your community group and recruit new members. If you are in Glasshouse Country, the committee wants to hear from you. Informal clubs such as walking, hobby, special-interest and activity groups are encouraged to join the fun. Not for profit clubs and associations can have a stall at no charge. Reasonable fees are charged for food vendors, business/ tourism displays and artisan stalls. With thousands of people expected to attend and join the Street Party fun, now is your chance to show your community what you do. Contact the Celebrate Glasshouse Country team by email at info@celebrateGC.com. au, or ring Judy on 0408 445 988 (leave a message if no answer). Roger Reilly, Beckie Newing and Maree Anderson

New harmony in their lives The Sunshine Statesmen have welcomed eight new voices to their Barbershop harmony, and look forward to adding others. This group, attracted from all corners of the Sunshine Coast, having taken the opportunity to learn about singing in the barbershop genre at the short introductory program in the last few weeks, enjoyed it so much that they have become members of the Chorus. Chorus President Bob Rutter, from Caloundra, welcomed this new group, and said that they have added extra strength to the Chorus. "We look forward to them reaching the stage of being able to sing with us in local community events, and expect they will be out in force at the Choralfest at Kawana on June 10," Bob said. Anyone interested in singing with the Chorus can contact Graham Nicholson 5494 6241 or go the website www.sunshinestatesmen.org.au.

New members, including Mooloolah local Garry Whiston (in blue), listen to pearls of wisdom from Musical Director Brian Martin www.gcnews.com.au
Koalas matter! Local Glass House Mountains resident Vanda Grabowski is deeply committed to koala conservation and her passion for these native marsupials has driven both her professional and personal interest for over 25 years. Vanda (aka Wanda) is a founding member of Koala Action Inc (KAI) formerly named Koala Action Pine Rivers Inc (KAPR) which began its work in 2004. She said KAI is an “action-based” group committed to making a difference by “doing” rather than paying lip service to koala conservation. Much of their work involves educating the both the local and wider community about the koala and the perils it faces living in close proximity to humans. Vanda has also been actively involved in undertaking koala rescues for over ten years. Vanda’s background and expertise lies in the area of wildlife and human interaction with a particular focus on Queensland’s “vulnerable” koalas. She graduated in 1993 from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Australian Environmental Studies. “I began my obsession with koalas as a volunteer carer at the Moggill Koala Hospital from August 1993 to May 2004,” Vanda said. “I then continued my volunteer work at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital until September 2013 where I cared for sick, injured and orphaned koalas admitted from all over South-East Queensland.” Vanda and her family moved to Glass House Mountains in 2009, fulfilling a desire to live in a smaller community while gaining additional space to continue to nurture sick and injured orphaned koala joeys. “We wanted to be live on acreage away from suburbia and surrounded by bushland.
As I raise orphaned koala joeys from my home I have enough room to grow a small koala food tree plantation and had enough space to build a secure outdoor enclosure in which to put my charges as they grew older.” Subsequently, as president/ secretary of KAI, Vanda became more involved in helping rally the community to ensure the survival of koalas in this area. In 2010, she was honoured to be nominated as a finalist in the Environment Category of the Pride of Australia Medal and her volunteer work includes liaising with Sunshine Coast Council and Moreton Bay Regional Council, private enterprise and other community groups to ensure the sustainability of the koala in our region. KAI concentrates its activities on retaining remaining bushland habitat, rehabilitating secondary habitat to improve its carrying capacity and replanting cleared areas with koala food trees and other native trees, shrubs and grasses. KAI is committed to supporting its koala orphan carers by facilitating the creation of and growing koala food tree plantations as well as subsidising costs related to raising koala joeys. In April this year, KAI and its public fund (Koala Action Gift Fund) have successfully been entered onto the Register of Environmental Organisations which means that donations over $2 made to the public fund are eligible for a tax deduction. With their public fund status now endorsed as ‘Deductible Gift Recipients’ by the Australian
Taxation Office, the hope is that KAI will be able to garner more funds to help the organisation meet its core objectives. These include lobbying for the retention of native bush land habitat and providing resources to rehabilitate degraded bushland and to replant koala food trees and other natives in parks, reserves and open spaces. The organisation also provides free koala education and awareness presentations to community groups, schools and private enterprise and assists in the rescue and care of sick, injured adult and orphaned koalas. If you would like to find out more about this not for profit organisation or are concerned about the long term survival of koalas in South-East Queensland and want to get involved, visit www. koalaactioninc.org. To make a donation to the Koala Action Gift Fund, the account details are Bendigo Bank BSB Number 633000, Account Number 155211337.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Hundreds of visitors
with Sue Tanner Although it seems quite a while ago, Cyclone Debbie did considerable damage on the bottom track which has now been repaired and everything is open again. A major part of the damage was the falling of one of the Rose Gums at the viewing platform. For regular visitors it was the one with the lean on the right. This tree was more than 50 metres tall and has fallen across the creek. The bottom track was washed away again and plans are in the works to build boardwalks over the entire bottom track in stages over the next few years. The Friends are still waiting for the fitout of the retail area and the general public waiting for the café which is now due in July. The vollies have been busy with hundreds of visitors. There have been nearly as many visits since the opening of the new building in February as visited in the whole of last year – amazing. More volunteers are always needed, especially those who can work on weekends – the busiest times. Displays are regularly changing in the Discovery Centre so there is always something new and interesting to see as well as enjoying a relaxing walk in the beautiful forest. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www.friends-of-mary-cairncross. com.au or call 5435 0348.

The power of music to heal is widely recognised – music therapy is considered by many as one of the most effective and holistic ways to address physical and emotional pain. So what can it do for us? It is not quite as straight forward as the layman might have imagined. Being a good performer for example won’t necessarily make you a good therapist! And is an uplifting piece going to have the same effect as something tender and compassionate? No, certainly not, but nor is being in the wrong frame of mind to undertake this sort of healing. So, music chosen with the utmost sensitivity, a space conducive to this sort of therapy and to be able to bring our awareness or presence to the task – to be in touch with our inner self, are all part of it. If interested in seeing if this form of therapy can work for you, I’d recommend contacting a professional in the field. A therapist will have a range of questions, the first of which might be, “Is it an emotional hurt or a physical illness?" But if you’d just like to experiment on yourself you can rest with the knowledge that you can’t go wrong with this sort of ‘medicine’. It isn’t like you are taking a course of pills! Something that comes across as essential, especially with an emotional hurt, is to be able to turn inward – to allow yourself to enter into the pain and not struggle against it. To let it come and take you where it will, whether it is tears or sleep or just a warm feeling. Trust in your innate ability to heal yourself and it will work on some level. If you are ill you are especially vulnerable and this is where music seems to have its power – through our vulnerability it finds a direct channel to enter into us. For many of us, accustomed to interacting with the external world where things happen to us, and not used to turning inward, some of this might not be easy. And the imagery aspect of this work, which is an extension of what a Music Therapist might offer, could initially be challenging. Though it might be as simple as imagining yourself in perfect health as a starting point for the healing. At a deeper level if you can visualise your hurt as a disharmonious part of yourself that the music will assist in bringing back into tune, then you are probably on the right path. Google Music and Imagery if you’d like to know more. There is a wealth of articles and books on this subject.

Happenings at Menshed
Glass House Mountains Probus Contributed by Ron Butts We are a Club for retired people who enjoy friendship and fellowship, going on monthly outings and listening to interesting speakers. This month was an informative and fun talk given by solicitor Paul Brennan on the ‘Ten Commandments of Will Disputes’. An outing to the Nambour Waste 2 Resource Centre was also enjoyed by our members, which was a great follow up to the interesting television program on ABC about waste management. The morning ended with lunch at the Nambour RSL Club. July's outing is a tour of the Care Flight Hangar at Sunshine Coast Airport. We meet at the Community Centre Hall, Beerwah, next to the library every second Wednesday of the month starting at 10am. We provide a free morning tea and members bring along a small plate of food to share for lunch. Matilda Fruit Barn generously donates a fruit and vegie basket as a lucky door prize. Visitors are most welcome. Call Marie on 5494 0332 or just come along to the next meeting for more information.

The men at the Glasshouse Country Menshed were recently requested to fabricate a sign to say ‘HOPE’ which was the theme for the 2017 Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. The men were able to christen their new plasma cutter and convert some preloved trim deck iron to produce the end product (see photo). The funds to purchase the cutter were raised by holding an auction between the Shedders for a gift of woodworking tools donated to the shed. As the shed had a full range of woodworking tools, the decision was made to add the new metal working tool, providing a new skill for the Shedders to turn preloved sheet metal into garden art and other items. The June men's health forum will be held at the shed (352 Peachester Road, Beerwah) on Wednesday June 14 at 9.15am. The topic to be addressed will be ‘Seniors in Home Age Care’ and the things all families need to know regarding support services from the government. The forum will be addressed by a team from Glasshouse Country Care. All men and their partners are welcome to attend. Don't be late if you want a seat. This is a joint activity between the Menshed and the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group. For more information contact Bob on 0427 606 240.

What’s hot at Forest Heart Nursery in June
With Spencer and Karen Shaw Welcome to winter and the cool fresh weather that encourages you to get out and about in the garden. My suggestion for keeping warm this winter is planting in your gardens and acreages with native plants and fruit trees to make a better world for you, your family, friends and community and of course all of the unique wildlife that we share our land with. So let’s start with what’s hot at Forest Heart this week (in spite of the cool weather!). We’ve got a great new range of native hibiscus cultivars in stock including Aussie Choice, Aussie Pearl and Aussie Delight. These are smaller in stature than some of the wild species, growing to only one and a half to two metres, but big on flowers and colour. Our advanced local native shrub range is also extending with Muttonwood, Native Elderberry, Bottlebrushes, Westringias and hundreds more all looking great. In the fruit trees we have a great range of citrus, stone fruits, figs, avocados and more. For knowledge and ideas, we have a great range of native plant and animal books, we stock Hollow Log Homes Nest Boxes, and we carry the best tree guards, mulch mats and more. Finally, come and chat with our great staff (us of course!) for planting advice and ID services.
In the Garden with Brownie The Maleny Show pavilion was an explosion of colour over the weekend with the flower show and competition. Roses, orchids, potted colour and of course ... camellias. Winning first prize for the hybrid or reticulate category was Andrew Schofield son-in-law of Curramore camellia aficionado Elaine Tincknell from Kellyfield Camellias – displaying a variety called ‘Ellie’s Girl’. Congratulations go to all the show winners – but more importantly to everyone who put entries into the flower, pot plant and produce sections. It wouldn’t be a real Show without them. School News Fun for the Under 8s
Art Action 4 Oceans
Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester State School Year 5 student Stella Pulham reports that the school’s 5/6 class recently went to Moffat Beach with eARThed teachers to pick up rubbish along the beach and park area. “We were given 45 minutes to pick up as much rubbish as we could,” Stella said. “Most people think that the beach is clean. It is, until you look closer and there is so much. “We found 82 cigarettes and all together there were approximately 500 items of rubbish. We found bottle tops, clothes and a hammer. “In total the River School’s rubbish weighed 3.5kg and the Peachester State School’s rubbish weighed 5.2kg. In total that was 8.7kg. We had lots of fun and learned a lot from it.” Dustin Tranter, a Year 6 student, was inspired by the day and wrote the following Haiku poem: “Sand is so yellow, Garbage is very gross and grey So get it away.” Thanks to Unity Water's sponsorship, Year 6 classes at some schools across Noosa, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay shires can enjoy Art Action 4 Oceans for free. Annual Sorry Day
Beerwah State High School was once again delighted to host an annual Sorry Day event with the Indigenous Student Council President Mitch Markham leading the Acknowledgment of Country. He welcomed Elders, guests and visiting Indigenous primary students from Beerwah, Landsborough, Mooloolah, Beerburrum and Elimbah State Schools. This was followed by Brent Miller, long-time member of Gubbi Gubbi Dance Group, speaking to students about local knowledge, understanding and language.
Montana and Ariel pick up beach litter Art 4 Oceans, a Beach Clean Up Excursion (with bus transport) and a Creek Clean Up Excursion (near to the school). eARTh-ed is a new collaboration between artist and environmental activist Yanni van Zijl and environmental educator Kylie Moses. Yanni and Kylie engage students with beachlitter art and plan a creative sustainable action plan for their school environment. Students make collaborative art 4 eARTh to promote their project to peers and the wider community. For further information or bookings, contact Kylie on ArtAction4Oceans@gmail.com or 0411 238 753.
Local custodians then shared their knowledge and engaged students in workshops featuring traditional art, didgeridoo playing, artefacts, storytelling and dance. Ms Franks, Beerwah SHS Indigenous Liaison officer, said that the day also provides an opportunity for the school’s own Indigenous students to take on a leadership role and work with primary students to ensure that all enjoy the celebrations. The ceremony closed with a group gathering in the school’s Yarning Circle.

before and after school in preparation for the upcoming Annual Athletics Carnival. The students from all year levels have been able to join Mrs Muller for sessions on discus, shot put, long jump, high jump and running. She has been teaching them all aspects of running short and long distances. She has given them extra training and techniques for their events in the coming weeks. Comments from the students included, “We hope to make Mrs Muller proud of us on Sports day and do a fantastic job.” And, “She is fantastic, she has taught me a lot and I actually feel fitter and ready for the athletics carnival.” The students who have been participating would like to thank Mrs Rachel Muller very much for her precious time and valuable input. This is truly a teacher who goes above and beyond for her students. Many parents within the school community would also like to say thank you.
Contributed by Debbie Roberts Coast to Country was the theme of this year’s U8s Day at the Beerburrum State School that saw the staff and students of Groups C and O dress up and welcome some of our 2018 Preps along with children from the Glasshouse Early Education Centre. The students had a morning of fun riding ponies, milking cows, painting, making mini pizzas and enjoying a range of craft activities, along with participating in cricket skill activities run by Queensland Cricket. A big thank you to Mrs O'Brien, Miss Anna and our Student Leaders who escorted the students through the activities (I think they enjoyed it as much as the younger students).
Invitation to Under 8s Day
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School is hosting an Under Eights Day celebration on Wednesday June 14 from 9am until 10.40am. They are inviting all young children and their families in the local community to join them for a morning of fun-filled activities. Local day care centres, kindergartens and playgroups are also most welcome to come along and join in the fun. You Said It Re: Accident on Old Gympie Road, Beerwah
When the traffic was diverted along Old Gympie Road from Steve Irwin Way due to an accident, why didn’t the local police identify the fact that there was going to be a major choke point at this intersection? I was very upset to read about Cheryle Campbell’s mother’s accident as I think this would have been averted if the police had done their job in a more competent fashion and stationed an officer to direct traffic at this point until the school traffic had dissipated. It has happened to me before where the traffic has been diverted off the highway, but with no indication of where to go after the accident site has been passed and I have become hopelessly lost! Don't the current police get schooled in point duty as they did years ago? For any tips, they could always ask Constable Dickie, he was a delight to watch! Trevor Brimelow Beerwah
Council/NBN decision betrays locals
Your article on NBN and the Sunshine Coast Council decision (GC&M News, May 24) "It’s all go for NBN towers" on the contested tower sites at Eudlo, Beerwah, and Glass House makes it clear the council just caved in to NBN pressure while disappointing and betraying hundreds of residents who lodged objections to the positioning of those three towers. Council clearly went against its own Town Plan Telecommunications Code requirements in backing down and agreeing to put towers on those sites. Cr Jenny McKay at pre-election meetings last year in Maleny made it clear she was unhappy with many of the towers' positioning – that the scenic amenity of an area counted for more and she said council wanted alternative sites from NBN. It did not happen. The Glass House tower is 55m high and on a scenic site. At the Beerwah tower site, council officers found the application photos showed vulnerable tree species there needing protection and it’s also in proximity to the nearby school. The Eudlo site had near 100 objections, the largest ever on the coast. In its appeal, NBN Co said there were no alternative places to erect the towers in each community. Council agreed saying if "not located in the approved locations" communities will not have "secure access" to the network. This is total bunkum. The Eudlo area has many sites, Beerwah also has, and the Glass House one is in the wrong place. What do you make Town Plans for – if you are then just going to toss them aside when pressure is applied with high profile lawyers as NBN had? Richard Giles Conondale

Skippy Park/Gowen Park vegetation damage
While there are many issues that need to be addressed at this park, one such issue which should interest the Sunshine Coast Council is the recent damage of native vegetation in a section of Gowen Park for the building of a ‘structure’. I admire this person's (or persons') ingenuity of building design, but feel the damage to our local native species (macaranga/monkey rope/she-oaks, etc) cannot go unnoticed. The ‘structure’ has since been demolished, and monitoring of the site will continue for any more signs of damage. People need to construct these type of ‘structures’ in their own backyards. Name supplied Mount Mellum
Thanks, lovely people
I would like to thank all the lovely people in Beerwah for your support over the nearly four years I have been here both as a resident and the business owner of Beerwah Natural Therapies. I have found this community supportive and friendly and I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Thank you again for being the community that you are. Bernette Ledger Beerwah
Beerwah sign
Re the comment in a recent edition from Rob Watkins. Yes, Rob, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I would like to suggest that our new sign that has been erected in Beerwah is totally fitting with our street landscape. I hope you don’t ever get sidetracked and drive down Simpson Street by mistake as I would hate to read what you would say about our beautiful streetscape we have in place there. Well done to the people behind our new town sign. Trevor L Watts Beerwah
Re: NBN towers not the problem
I refer to your article on May 31 entitled ‘NBN towers not the problem’. It is true – the problem is Sunshine Coast Council’s change in assessment that is the problem. I wish to provide some comments which should clear up some wording so that the reality of the Appeal Court process is understood. A mediated negotiation workshop was held between NBN and Council and was attended by many councillors. At this meeting the outcomes of the appeals were decided. Clayton Utz, the lawyers for NBN, prepared
the court’s decision and this was accepted in a short meeting by the judge. It was then released as the Court Decision. The acquiescence by council to this position with respect to these NBN appeals has set a very significant precedence for council and all other authorities across Australia who might be assessing development applications for NBN’s microwave towers (and other telecommunications towers). It should also be noted that the towers listed by Cr Rogerson were mostly approved under the previous Planning Scheme. They were done under Delegated Authority and not approved by him. Despite Cr Rogerson’s acceptance of the safety of microwave towers, there are many research papers which show good reason to be concerned about the safety aspects of microwave technology. Council’s existing Planning Scheme sets a reasonable standard for the siting of telecommunications towers within our communities. Jim Straker Reesville
Re: NBN towers not the problem
I fully support the comments by Councillor Greg Rogerson in the article ‘NBN Towers not a problem’ (GC&M News, May 31) that the existing plan relating to essential communication towers is not relevant to today's business and social needs. He mentions a number of hinterland towns that are ecstatic with having the improved communications they bring. I recently saw council reject a proposed Optus phone tower as it was going to be in a rural area and could be seen by car and train users as they went by at 80kmh. The light towers at Skippy Park are also seen by the same travellers two kilometres further along. We live in a society that is governed by vocal ‘do gooders’ and ‘not in my back yard’ and social disrupter types. There were 14 who objected – six of whom did not live in Beerwah – to people getting better coverage. So it is time for people to support councillors like Greg Rogerson who has the real community at heart. But as the council spokesperson replied it’s "on the list of future items for further consideration", yes indeed, Sir Humphrey lives on. Len Waud Beerwah

How can you help your kids with their mortgage? As Australian property values increase, many first home buyers are turning to “The Bank of Mum and Dad” for help with purchasing their first property. Whether you have adult children on the brink of moving out, or have a young brood that won’t be buying property for another couple of decades, it’s understandable that you’d want to help them out. Here are a few options (that don’t necessarily involve buying property for each of your children!). Educating your children about good saving strategies from an early age will help them build up the funds for their first property. Smart saving starts in early childhood 20

and ingraining habits such as putting away a small amount of money each week will ensure your children think about the future as they grow older. This strategy is also clever if you’re not too keen on financing your children’s homes yourself. Equip them with the tools to save up themselves, and you can relax into retirement! Another option is to act as a guarantor for your child’s mortgage, which means your own property’s equity serves as security for their home loan. The mortgage remains in your child’s name and should they default on the loan, the bank would take their property first. As a guarantor you will be liable for any shortfall after the the sale proceeds of
the borrowers property has been used to reduce the loan. This is a way of eliminating the need for your child to pay mortgage lenders insurance, and also increases their borrowing capacity. You can also give your adult kids a cash gift or take out a home loan together to help them get onto the property ladder. Of course, you can also contribute to your child’s home loan in part or full. You could become a co-borrower and jointly take out the home loan with your child, lend them the mortgage deposit, or buy the property outright for them. This is a massive financial commitment, so it’s important you
discuss these options in depth with your children before taking any concrete steps. Contacting Smartlines Teresa Harrison for expert advice before making a decision, will help you choose the right course of action for your family.

The celebrated Iranian film ‘The Salesman’, winner of the Best Foreign Language Film for 2017, will be screened in Maleny Community Centre this Saturday, June 10, at 7.15pm (doors open at 6pm for dinner). The film is 125 minutes and classified MA15+. ‘The Spa’, a short film from Gympie’s Heart of Gold Festival will complement the program. ‘The Salesman’ comes from the highly accredited Iranian writer/director Asghar Farhadi (‘The Separation’ and ‘The Past’), who based this story on actor protagonists: a young couple involved in a stage production of Arthur Miller’s ‘Death of a Salesman’, with husband Emad (also a teacher) and wife Rana playing Willy Loman and Linda. Forced to evacuate a crumbling building, the couple move into a new apartment which has a seamy past and seamier visitors. Alone one evening while Emad is at the theatre, Rana is attacked and severely traumatised, setting Emad onto a path of revenge and redemption. Powerful suspense and a gripping plotline leave even the resolution in doubt. This film also picked up a Best Actor award for (Emad) Shab Hosseini and Best Screenplay award for Farhadi. Dinner, catered by Spaghetti Junction, is accompanied by a drinks bar and tea/coffee stand with homemade slices. Members of the Maleny Film Society may pre-book online or via the Maleny Information Centre. Members of the public can purchase tickets at the door. Check the website: malenyfilmsociety.info.

The members and guests of the Mountain Quilters group who meet at the Peachester Hall were united in their pinks last week. The group members brought along lots of gorgeous sweet treats, as well as lashings of tasty strawberries and raspberries, for a special morning tea to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. The guest speaker on the morning was Claire Howard from Cancer Council Queensland who shared stories of some of the ways the important community fundraising assists them in doing their work, including research, services such as wigs and turbans, support for patients and education about being proactive to reduce the risks of getting cancer.

With Bernette Ledger Hello to all, well it’s the chilly time of year again so remember when you head off outside to take something warm with you to cover your neck and back to make sure you don’t get a chill. Our beautiful weather can change from warm and sunny to chilly and windy and catch us outside without suitable protection. In Queensland we often overlook the effect cold and cold damp weather has on our bodies. It can cause muscles to contract and stiffen and this can create tension on your musculoskeletal system causing aches and pains that can be avoided. If you already have pain issues this can exacerbate the problem. This is the time of year where I use a lot of moxibustion in the clinic to help ease pain and warm areas that have been exposed to cold. Moxibustion is a herb used in various ways, in a box designed to be safely applied to a large section of the body. I also use rice grain moxibustion techniques and there are also small prepacked individual stick-on moxa that are easy to use and suitable for home use when shown how to safely and correctly apply. Enjoy the outdoors and dress appropriately.

Using hynotherapy and NLP to quit smoking with Powerful Transformations Research shows that 62% to 70% of smokers have tried to quit without success. Cigarettes are very expensive. So, why do people continue to smoke? And why is it so hard for so many people to quit? Many people find it hard to find the willpower. The addiction is too strong, the withdrawals are too uncomfortable, life too stressful. Others are worried about cravings and worried about gaining weight. The fact is simple, smoking is not under our conscious control. Consciously we tell ourselves we are not going to smoke, but those unconscious patterns, triggers and habits just kick in and we have no control over them. Smoking is something your subconscious mind simply does automatically. You smoke the majority of your cigarettes almost unconsciously. It is a habit triggered by your unconscious patterns. The only way to quit is to change that habit and alter those patterns. You can try ‘cold turkey’, or you can do it the easy way with hypnosis and deal with your own individual reasons and triggers. Call Mary today on 0457 230 952, and quit for good. One session, two hours, and you’re free forever.

Cappriccio's
While being someone that loves to try new places to eat I have to say there is also something really comforting to be able to head out for a meal after work when you just can’t face cooking, knowing that whatever you order from the menu is going to be great and this is how I feel about a night at Cappriccio’s Italian Restaurant at Maleny. They have such a comprehensive range of items on their menu that no matter what my mood, they have something to keep me happy. So if I am feeling like something that ticks all of my healthy eating lifestyle choices, I know I can order my favourite Pesce Napoletana, lovely fillets of fish gently pan steamed with herbs and garlic, topped with a tasty tomato sauce and served with an Italian Salad (hold the dressing). And on a really cold night like last week’s State of Origin night when comfort food is really more the order of the night, I can head straight to my go to order of a Calzone (closed pizza) with my favourite Napoli special filling of tomato, cheese, avocado,
bacon, prawns, fresh chilli and sundried tomatoes. And for when I am wavering between good and evil I can always choose an entrée size spaghetti marinara of freshly cooked spaghetti with a light tomato sauce, prawns, fish, calamari, clams and parsley and an entrée serve of Italian Salad. Brownie on the other hand is more consistent in his approach. He will happily choose from one of the twenty different gourmet pizza choices, generally add
anchovies to the mix and match it up with half a carafe of house wine! Not having small children or pets to juggle means we generally like to eat out after work, so we can sit back and have all of the hard work taken care of, however when we dine in I always notice that there are plenty of people dropping in to pick up take away orders and I also know that they offer home delivery (with a $5 delivery fee). So, along with the vegetarian and gluten free pizza options, I reckon that owners Phil and Sonya Venditti have pretty much worked out exactly how to keep all of their customers happy. They have been operating the business since 1995 and, these days, to have such a long track record in the same business means that they must have got the mix just right. No doubt they have plenty of other couples, families, and friends who, like us, love the consistency of knowing that they will be happy with their meals and just keep on coming back!

Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council
Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra
Turner Park – stage 3 commences
Biggest Morning Tea raises $2,200
I am pleased to say that construction works for stage 3 of Turner Park will be starting mid-June and works are scheduled to be completed midAugust (weather permitting). The construction works will include the installation of a stone clad entry wall, stone clad culvert walls, pedestrian and vehicle pavements, lamp post lighting, directional finger post signage and soft scape works. As always I appreciate your patience and co-operation during construction.
More than 200 people packed out Caloundra’s CCSA Hall on Friday May 27 for the Biggest Morning Tea that I hosted with the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific. Now in its fourth year, the event was by far the biggest and the best with $2,200 raised for the Cancer Council Queensland, record guest numbers and an important showing of Caloundra’s community spirit. The success of this year’s Morning Tea is in no small part due to the support of the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific coming on board. And we also saw how a community can band together for a cause that impacts so many. This event aims to raise funds for the Cancer Council but it also offers a valuable opportunity to look at where we are heading in terms of cancer treatment and support services here on the Sunshine Coast. Each year, more than 3,360 people on the Sunshine Coast are diagnosed with cancer and around 1,090 die from the disease. With the massive increase in capacity for cancer treatment locally thanks to new facilities like those built at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, the majority of local cancer patients will now be able to receive their cancer care on the Sunshine Coast. With so many new cancer diagnoses on the Sunshine Coast last year, it is important to know that most of these patients will not be required to travel further afield for their treatments. A special thanks to the CCSA Hall team for all their hard work and also our guest speakers: Christine Bleijie, a melanoma cancer survivor and Cancer Support volunteer; Dr Jeremy Long, Clinical Director of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service; and Chris McMillan, Cancer Council Qld CEO.

Imminent news on the Landsborough Railway Overpass The Landsborough Railway Overpass is a very important local issue in Landsborough but the State Government, from day one, have not consulted the population. They have taken no account of the social or economic consequences of what they are planning to do and the impact could be devastating if it goes wrong. It has all the hallmarks of what happened in Beerwah not that long ago and we know in Beerwah that the downturn was long and deep. The State Government, despite my numerous requests, have not come to the party for a further meeting. In the immediate future I intend to outline very clearly what the LNP will do with the State Government’s plan, so please watch this space.

The Reverend Jeanette Jamieson – Maleny Anglican Parish I have recently arrived in Maleny from Kilcoy to take up my new position as Priest-in-Charge of the Maleny Anglican Parish (including Maleny, Montville and Kenilworth churches). I am enjoying settling into this beautiful region and have very much appreciated the warm welcome which I have received. On Friday, May 5, I was officially commissioned at a special service held at St George’s Anglican Church, Maleny with Bishop Jeremy Greaves officiating. It was particularly heartening to be joined at this service by members of the Kilcoy/ Woodford parish and local community as well as representatives of the Catholic, Presbyterian and Uniting churches. Over recent weeks, there has been much emphasis placed on the topic of Christian unity. The 2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity coordinated by the Australian National Council of Churches had as its theme ‘Reconciliation – the Love of Christ compels us’, celebrating Christ’s love as the driving force which moves us beyond our division toward acts of reconciliation. On an international front, Christians of all denominations were recently invited by the

Archbishop of Canterbury to take part in the global prayer movement entitled, ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. Archbishop Justin Welby said, “Jesus prayed … that we … might ‘be one that the world might believe’”. He invited us all to work towards making a lasting difference in our nations and in the world, by responding to Jesus’ call to find a deep unity of purpose in prayer. Prayer is often used in times of special trauma. We have been shocked by the recent terrorist attack in Manchester and the resultant deaths and injuries but how wonderful to see the openhearted, helpful response of so many who did not allow boundaries of race or religion to prevent them from offering assistance. Christians, Jews and Muslims joined together with other members of the community showing unity, love and support to those affected and countermanding the terrorist’s message of division, violence and hate. May we all follow suit being united in prayer and action to demonstrate Christ’s love to a world in need!

ROSS’S RENTAL TIP LONG-TERM TENANCY AGREEMENTS
When landlords and tenants think of tenancy terms it is generally 6 or 12 months. However, have you considered a longer tenancy? For residential properties you can enter into a tenancy term for up to 3 years. While this may not be for everyone it can be a smart choice if: *A tenant is looking for a long-term secure Ross Rutledge tenancy *You are not looking to sell the property within the tenancy term *You 5499 9525 or are wanting to reduce the possibility of 0447 787 020 increased wear and tear, or *You want long-term rental security. Rental increases can also be included during the 3 year period to ensure that your income is maximised in accordance with the market. Tenancy terms can be for any period of time – 7 months, 10 months or 21 months, etc.

A to Z of Trades & Services Talkin' Trades with Peachester Memorials Peachester resident Wayne Osborne is a highly skilled stone mason and craftsman who specialises in creating and restoring headstones and monuments. He has been a qualified stone mason for over 20 years and has extensive experience crafting headstones. Previously he has also worked creating bespoke benchtops, stone walls and stone houses. Peachester Memorials offers a service that creates individually created granite or marble headstones and memorials that can beautifully and meaningfully pay tribute to those that have passed. Wayne also offers restoration services covering all cemeteries on the
Sunshine Coast and he can restore, repair and repaint headstones as required. Sunken graves can also be rebuilt. One of the most important aspects of Wayne’s work is his ability to be able to talk with people about their memorial wishes for loved ones – often during a time of grief. “Part of what I do is being able to convey the right words at the right time and have empathy for people who may be facing a challenging time dealing with loss,” explains Wayne. Through his creative expertise and following careful consultation with family members, Wayne is able to incorporate personalised aspects of someone’s life if requested. For example, the memorial can include
references to hobbies or interests. Alternatively, a simple scripted headstone can be equally effective. For more details please contact Wayne on 0429 658 905.

Witta Tennis
Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Whistlers are into the semi-finals this Friday at Mooloolaba against Mooloolaba Legends. Good luck Whistlers. After a hard fought battle between the Witta Wagtails and the Kawana Slammers, there was three points difference. Congratulations to Kawana for their win and thanks from Witta players Suzie, Sonia, Eumice and Gerry for a great day of tennis. Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Hot Chillies. It was a bit windy and cold, but long rallies warmed us up all the time. Good rallies and long deuces as usual, it was good tennis. And some laughs on and off the court, so we all had a good day. And had a good win which was even better. Score was 43-28 games, 6-3 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats played at Coolum against a very determined Tourists and the wind. Pauline, Annie, Jenie and a sick Stacey did their best but couldn’t bring it home. We now regroup in the off season and get ready for the spring season. Date claimer: Sunday June 18 at 10.00am Witta Tennis is hosting Mapleton Tennis Club for a fun day of tennis. Please RSVP to Maree. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

San Training Centre update
Cameron and Kasia, taekwondo instructors from San Training Centre in Beerwah, recently competed in a major international competition in Auckland, New Zealand – the G2-ranked New Zealand Open. The G-rank refers to the amount of points competitors can gain towards their world ranking by participating and medalling at certain international events. The event attracted 300 competitors from 19 countries. Both Cameron and Kasia made it to the quarterfinals, finishing fifth in their divisions. They have recently spent a week training at the combat centre in the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, which helped them put in a good performance. Cameron fought a Turkish fighter in the first round beating him comfortably 10-1. He then faced the first seed, Haider, who is ranked 13th in the world in the men’s 80kg division and represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The fight was very close – Haider scored two body kicks worth two points each, and Cameron gained two points from penalties – the final score was 2-4 to Haider, with an excellent performance for Cameron. Kasia was seeded fourth in her draw so went straight through to the quarterfinals fighting a rival Aussie from Victoria. The fight before hers ended suddenly and she had to fight sooner than expected. She lost a few points in the first round, then showed great skill in the following two rounds and made a comeback, keeping her opponent scoreless, but couldn't take the lead losing 4-6. There has recently been a change to the rules enforced during WTF sparring competitions, and Cameron and Kasia have both been working hard to make the most of the opportunity to find new strategies after they both failed to make the team for the world championships. They will travel again to the AIS for more training in early June, and are planning a trip to Europe to compete later in the year.

An old man went to the doctor complaining that his wife could barely hear. The doctor suggested a test to find out the extent of the problem. “Stand far behind her and ask her a question, and then slowly move up and see how far away you are when she first responds.” The old man, excited to finally be working on a solution for the problem, runs home and sees his wife preparing dinner.
“Honey,” the man asks standing around 20 feet away, “what’s for dinner?” After receiving no response he tried it again 15 feet away, and again no response. Then again at 10 feet away and again he received no response. Finally he was five feet away, “Honey, what’s for dinner?” She replies, “For the fourth time, it’s lasagne!” Contributed by Tim James of Beerwah

A duo of planets indicates a fine loving commitment to those who want it. It might be the perfect relationship or any kind of partnership that may be social or business alliances. A social sizzle! VIRGO August 23 - September 22 You will be doing a lot of tactical planning for your life ahead. Jupiter going direct after the 9th, shifting astrological tides, stirs you up, and that Sagittarius Full Moon makes for good business and helpful partners. The weekend makes you feel in tune with ambition as the Moon is in another earth sign, Capricorn. Enjoy the weekend! LIBRA September 23 - October 22 If you are open to something, or someone new, then you could have a sudden attraction on a new exciting level! The Full Moon demands hard choices to be made. However, your powers of concentration, with a serious mindset, will be your asset. Don’t let anxiety or negativity get in your way. An enjoyable weekend. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The Full Moon, together with the planet Jupiter, around the 9th of the month sets off recent money matters. Week beginning 07/06/17 SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 There is much relationship activity from the 4th of the month and we have the emotional sign of Cancer to prepare for some domestic dispute. Don’t let any arguments with family members or children escalate out of control. This often happens around a Full Moon and there’s one on the 9th. Someone opens a dialogue so prepare to listen. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 There is much work for you to perform in service to others this month. You achieve the greatest success by being ready to help and serve others. Find ways to adopt new methods that will bolster working efficiency. The Full Moon reasserts your health theme, both physically and mentally. Jupiter in forward drive, blesses your career prospects. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This month the planets moving through the Gemini sign, together with the nurturing asteroid Ceres, bring logic and creativity abilities to any art project that may capture your attention. Maybe you will write an article or a journal. If there is a project to be led you will have lots of ideas. Good news is Jupiter is blessing travel arrangements. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The emphasis this month begins in your 4th sector of home affairs. It may also mean that you could spruce up your office or base of operations. You work with your emotional foundations sensing security and spending time sorting out a variety of paper and digital devices. There should be lots of short visits with positive lively opportunities.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 The merry month of June sees the Sun shining in Gemini which goes well with your Arian sign! There will be many discussions, perhaps about basic needs. As Gemini gives out the powers of expression you should find yourself reading all the news that is fit to print, talk about, and pass on. It is suggested you go to a public speaking class. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 The emphasis is in your second sector, which rules your financial ambitions and powers to raise needed funds. The planets around you now are excellent for buying and selling activities. The Full Moon comes up on the 9th and throws monetary matters to a climax. Overseas interests are possibly about travel and there is one that has a legal slant. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 All the emphasis this month is in your first, personal sector, meaning success through leadership and drive. The other part of the energy carries a caring for your appearance and desire to look smart on all occasions. New projects are coming up for you. Decisions for greater success must be based on factual material. Proceed with caution now! CANCER June 22 - July 22 This month you may have to pay a visit to a hospital or help somebody who is disabled. This is not the month for a hectic social life, as you will want to spend time alone and introspectively write down what goals you wish to achieve this year. If single, you are ready to experiment and explore. The Full Moon is a signal to take care of your health.
