n page 4 we have included a statement from Senior Constable Len Elliott, from Beerwah Police Station who in his duty as a police Officer on Good Friday was involved in a serious traffic incident that saw him badly injured and having a leg amputated. Although I don’t know Senior Constable Len Elliott personally – over the years I have met many local police officers, who I would sum up as regular fellas (and girls) doing a tough job. No doubt, just like the rest of us when we head out the door to go off to work, we expect to return home at the end of the day. But as things transpired on Good Friday, Senior Constable Len Elliott’s life will never be the same, and he still hasn’t made it back home. He wasn’t participating in an extreme sport, or taking crazy risks to pursue an adrenaline rush, sadly he was just doing his job protecting the rest of us that regularly travel along Steve Irwin Way. His statement is heartfelt and positive, sharing his appreciation for those that have been there for him since the event took place. I would like to say to him ‘thank you for all you did for our community’ and we wish you well in your recovery. Regards,

Energex embraces battery storage for households Since the State Government announced the end of the 8¢per kW hour export incentive, Energex has been working on adjusting its business model to suit the changed situation.

Now, larger systems are being permitted Because the State Government – via its Energex involvement – is no longer paying 8¢ out of revenue, the previous 5kW solar system limitation is critical. It is planned that customers in most instances will be permitted to install a roof top solar system UP TO 30kW. The proviso is that in most instances NO solar energy produced is to be exported to the grid.

A statement from Senior Constable Len Elliott of Beerwah Police Station

Beerwah I was involved in a traffic incident on the

evening of Good Friday that resulted in the amputation of my right leg. I would like to thank many people including: Members of the public for all the messages of support, cards, flowers and gifts. My colleagues from Beerwah Station including my Officer in Charge, Bruce Duck. I want to pay special thanks to Darren Tonkins and Conan Sawyer who were the first officers on the scene and my valued workmates. They gave me the initial care I needed and kept on supporting and encouraging me until medical help arrived. The police community as a whole for all their support and encouragement. I have had regular visitors to the hospital and have been encouraged with jokes, laughter and Lindt chocolate. It is amazing how from the Commissioner down, the police family comes together to support one of their own when you are faced with hardship. They have also been very supportive of my family.

All of the Queensland Ambulance Service and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital staff who have been wonderful and supportive and I am progressing well as a result of their care and attention. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for me. Can I deliver a timely reminder to everyone on the road. You need to adhere to the road rules and drive to the conditions of the road. When getting behind the wheel of a vehicle you have to expect the unexpected and please, just show courtesy to everyone on the road. I also want to pay special thanks to my extended family, who have helped my beautiful wife Janine and I in countless ways during the past two weeks. Finally, I want to thank my beautiful wife Janine and my three beautiful boys, Hayden, Kurt and Myles for their love and support during this challenging time in my life.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President Bob McLean is keen to bring local tourism operators together for a discussion forum that will get the ball rolling on a collaborative approach to how Glasshouse Country can attract and accommodate more visitors to the area. Bob said the recent combination of the Easter – Anzac day weekends had created excellent opportunities for the drive tourist to take a short break in Glasshouse Country. And while day visitor’s numbers were probably up, Bob thinks we missed on extended visits because of the lack of low cost accommodation. “The challenge now is, for innovative opportunities to be explored, maybe to provide low cost accommodation, not in the national parks but on suitable sited non-productive private land adjacent to the parks,” Bob said. Adopt a Digger Display

Have you ever felt that your life is a never ending spiral of working and spending, striving for the trappings of an affluent life that somehow leaves you unhappy or unfulfilled? Are your days full and your home just a place to fall into bed at the end of each busy day? Glasshouse Country News spoke with Rhonda Hetzel, a very interesting woman from Landsborough, who came to this thought later in life and decided to do something about it. Rhonda is a retired journalist and technical writer who had all the trappings of a successful career and the whirlwind lifestyle that goes with it. She started to question the way she was living her life and decided to make some changes. She wanted to ‘work’ less and live more, so she started to think of ways to slow down, spend less and enjoy her time more. The results were surprising. Rhonda said if you haven't already discovered the power of your own home you are in for a delightful and beautiful shock. “Come closer and let me whisper in your ear, because if everyone knows this, it will cause a revolution. The work you do in your own home, by creating a warm and secure place for yourself and your family to live in, will enrich you and make you a different person. “It saved me from a life of ridiculous spending and mindless acquisition and slowed me down enough to allow me to see the beauty here,” she said. Rhonda took a close look at how she spent her money and started to shed the things that didn’t add to her joy of living.

She and her husband Hanno started to make changes to their home to make it cheaper to run and more environmentally friendly. Being a professional writer, Rhonda started a blog to share her ideas with whoever wanted to listen - and listen they did. Her following grew rapidly - you can view her blog at http://down-to---earth.blogspot.com.au/ The blog was noticed by Penguin publishing, which approached Rhonda to write a book. She did this and ‘Down to Earth’ became an immediate best seller. She was making more and buying less. The backyard became an area of organic food production, her hens a source of eggs as well as a delightfully calming influence on the soul. She makes cleaning products, cheese, preserves and much more, and she wants to share it all. Her latest book ‘The Simple Life’ was published in March this year and is the story of Rhonda’s journey to a simple life and the lessons she has learned along the way. It is available as a Penguin special and will be the first of a series of little books focusing on different aspects of her new life. Rhonda says she has found true joy and fulfilment and she can see that she had been looking for that kind of satisfaction.

To commemorate the Anzac centenary and to honour ‘our boys’, Maureen Glover and the Beerwah Family History Group hosted a fantastic display of diggers local to the area. Visitors from as far away as Toowoomba and Newcastle have visited Beerwah Library especially to view the ‘Adopt a Digger’ display. The display featured the life, in war time and peace, of their Grandfather, Digger James Henry Judge. The Adopt a Digger website aims to create a data base which records the military (and some personal ) history of each man and woman from today's Sunshine Coast region who fought in World War 1. You may contribute to the site with your own research or visit to see if your family member is listed there. Three amigo’s take on Camino challenge to help others Local businessman Martin Vigar, Pharmacist / Proprietor of Auscare Pharmacy Glasshouse Mountains, is joining two of his friends to walk the 800km completing the historical Camino de Santiago trek to raise funds for the Safe Streets charity organisation and Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation. The two other amigo’s joining Martin on this massive adventure are Glenn Ferguson, Managing Director of Ferguson Cannon Lawyers and Peter Poli, General Manager of Bridgestone Select Maroochydore, Caloundra and Maleny. Glenn recently took over the role as Chairman at Safe Streets. He says the focus of the charity is on the prevention of violence in the community. “The aim is to encourage a broad shift in attitude, throughout Queensland, to reject tolerance of all forms of violence,” Glenn said. “Everyone deserves to feel safe and live in a community free of violence.” He is also a Board member of The Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation which aims to meet the physical and nutritional needs of disadvantaged children living in Australia through the implementation of ongoing, practical, sustainable school-based intervention programs to break the cycle of poverty. This is done by simple measures such as providing nutritional information and school shoes.

To raise funds for these two charities, the trio will head to Spain, where they will walk for over 30 days along the Camino de Santiago. The 1,000 year old pilgrimage route begins in the Basque region in France and stretches over 800km through the foothills of the Pyrenees to the Santiago de Compostela. Martin and Peter said they are truly excited to undertake the journey and joked they will donate something for each blister, which there are sure to be in the hundreds. Students turn ideas into businesses Twelve Business, Design and Journalism students from the University of the Sunshine Coast learned how to turn business ideas into reality with the help of the region’s first Startup Weekend. Two Glasshouse Country students participated in the Startup Weekend that is a global grassroots movement of entrepreneurs involved in founding startup companies and launching successful ventures. Technology, digital and business mentors offer advice and hold workshops at the events, which are held around the world.

Participants at the start of this weekend’s event voted on which ideas were to be pursued in the 54-hour frenzy of business creation, ending with presentations to local entrepreneurial leaders. USC Lecturer in Entrepreneurship Dr Retha Scheepers said 12 USC students had grabbed the opportunity to gain ‘the ultimate practical learning experience’. Glasshouse Country View Club Our guest speaker for our April luncheon was Lenore McDonald, an author and comedienne, who writes humorous anecdotes of life as an oldie. Lenore told many stories about our kids, mother-in-laws, husbands and any other life situations you could think about which I am sure most of our guests could relate to. After having been entertained and having a good laugh, some of our members purchased her books to share with family and friends. A great time was had by all. Just a reminder that we will be celebrating our 11th birthday on Wednesday, June 18. If you wish to come along and / or bring a friend please ring Rosalea on 5438 7910. The luncheon is being held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at a cost of $27.00. This year The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal is highlighting that every day, disadvantaged children are at risk of falling through the cracks.

The sad story is that one in 10 Australian children lives with disadvantage. Without the education basics and support they need, they’re left behind in class. As the gap between them and their classmates widens, there’s a huge risk they’ll give up and drop out of school early. But you can change their story, by donating to The Smith Family. Peachester District Horticulture Society Contributed by Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) LeJardine nursery and cafe at Maleny was a beautiful venue for the April meeting. Great servings of home baked goodies with tea and coffee was enjoyed before the meeting. Theo and Rita Beenders spoke about highlights of their visit to the Nambour Garden Club for their Friendship day. They also commented about the size of the club; it has over 200 members. Some members spoke about problems with pests eating everything in the garden; they’re very bad at the moment. Scrub turkeys are proving to be a real problem in one garden. After the meeting, members wandered around the nursery and many purchased more plants for their gardens. The next meeting is on Thursday, May 15, 9.30am at Jeff and Robs place, Peachester. contributed by Amy Ratcliffe Over 100 people gathered on Easter Saturday to celebrate the 90th birthday of Stinne Job in Glass House Mountains at the home of her daughter Isabel Vere. Stinne was born in Denmark and migrated to Australia in 1971 with her husband Brian and five of her six children. They owned and operated the Log Cabin Caravan Park for many years, and while she now resides near Noosa, Stinne has such special memories of her time living in Glass House. There were 18 family members who made the big trip from Denmark to mark the celebration including two-year-old triplets. Other family and friends came from Perth, Tasmania, Cairns and throughout Queensland. Stinne was delighted to have letters of congratulations presented to her at the party from the Prime Minister, Clive Palmer MP, Mayor Mark Jamieson and Cr Tim Dwyer. The celebration included Danish traditional songs, happy birthday played on saxophone by Stinne’s great-grandson Luke and lots of great stories and memories.

Working bee buzz

Contributed by Ted Prickett The Friends of Cahill's Scrub are back in action restoring the 35 hectare council reserve on London Creek in Peachester. This a remnant and degraded subtropical rainforest and home to much native fauna including vulnerable species such as the Great Barred Frog and about 100 species of birds. We are pleased to welcome four new members to our group this year making Islay and Karen in the foreground a total of 15 active members. An enjoyable and very successful working bee was held on Saturday, April 26. A large area was cleared of lantana and previously cleared and planted areas were maintained. Our next working bee is due on May 24.

Staying Strong and Sane

This is a program for mums with babies under 12 months which has been developed to support and nurture the transition to motherhood. The program promotes secure attachment between mother and baby by providing new mothers with information, practical experience and opportunities to celebrate the experience of motherhood. Over the six week duration of the program, running two hours one day a week, participants will gain a deeper understanding and the skills to promote a secure attachment with their child, explore the many facets of motherhood in a nurturing environment, share experiences and develop support networks and friendships. Contributed by the Combined Probus Club For our April outing, a group of Probians caught the early train to visit the Qld Railways Heritage Workshops and Museum at Ipswich. We got to meet some true Aussie characters as we stepped into a real heritage railway workshop and saw it in operation, just as it has been for over 140 years. We saw genuine restoration of the Heritage Steam Train Fleet up close and heard living history from railway workers plus a few tall stories! For many of us this visit was quite nostalgic. Our May meeting is on Wednesday, May 14 starting at 10.00am. Our speaker is Annette Henderson who travelled the Sahara Desert in a VW Kombi and will share her many stories of achievement and survival. We provide a free morning tea and our members bring along a small plate of food to share for lunch. Are you new to the Hinterland area or recently retired? Come along and see what we are about. We are a group of ladies / gents who no longer work full time, but provide opportunities to keep minds active, expand interests, build relationships and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. We participate in monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of the month and enjoy an outing each month as well as enjoy sub groups of mah jong, book club and coffee mornings. The Peachester Art Show

The recent event was a huge success for the school and the community. The event raised $4,000.00 towards playground improvements and air-conditioning classrooms. For the exhibiting artists, 34 pieces of work were sold, with art sales totalling $7,000.00 over the weekend. The Art Show committee estimate 400 people attended the weekend exhibition, which they considered a brilliant result. The Peachester school children also exhibited their pieces and enjoyed seeing their work displayed as part of the exhibition. Albertine Lear, one of the very generous local artists whose work was raffled, also donated her time choosing the best artist from each grade. The winners were awarded a certificate of excellence for their efforts and announced at Parade the following Monday. These were, Hunter from Prep, Lily from Year 1/2, Bronte from Year 2/3, Lexi from Year 4, and Jordy from Year 4/5. While those who attended the event voted for the best of Junior and Senior entrants: People’s Choice winners were presented with a gift voucher kindly donated by Maleny Art Supplies on Coral Street. The People's Choice Junior winner was Kenny, and the Senior, Emily.

School News Remembrance, gratitude and national pride Contributed by Kylie Merola The first week of term two at Landsborough State School was all about commemorating Anzac Day. On Wednesday, April 23, Year 6 and 7 students travelled to Anzac Square in Brisbane to participate in the Anzac Commemoration for students. They felt privileged to be involved in this deeply memorable experience to recognise and reflect on the sacrifice of others. On Thursday, April 24, around 300 staff and students gathered for the school's annual Anzac Day ceremony. Special guests included Sgt Peter Livingstone from 1st Regiment Royal Australian Army Artillery, Gunner Simon Johnston, Ross Horne from Landsborough Glasshouse RSL and Rick Joyce from the Landsborough Masonic Lodge. Hosted by student leaders, the assembly included a meaningful slideshow presentation of war time images, a performance by the school choir, a reading of the ‘Ode to the Fallen’, the ‘Prayer of Remembrance’, one minute silence and the ‘Last Post’. It was a moving tribute to honour all service personnel, both past and present. Friday, April 25, saw Landsborough State School participate in the local community Anzac Day events. At the Landsborough cenotaph, they laid handmade wreaths prepared by the students of each class. This was followed by a march down Cribb Street and concluded with a service at the Landsborough Community Hall. School Principal, Kristy Walton, was pleased to see so many students turn out to participate. "Students learn about the significance of Anzac Day in the classroom. It is fantastic to then see them choose to come along to the community events of their own accord. They recognise how important it is to honour and remember all the Anzacs who fought for our freedom," she said.

Their spirit, our history

ANZAC Day celebrates the spirit of courage and bravery of our soldiers who went to war and fought for our freedom. One day a year we gather to pay our respects to the men and women that have been able to return home and also to the ones who haven’t. So, on April 25 I went to the Beerwah ANZAC Day parade, and I marched alongside some of my fellow students. I was nervous on the day because I didn’t know what to do. It was my first ever ANZAC Day march. I found where the people from my school were standing and saw our college captains getting ready to lead our school in the parade. However, it was a seemingly insignificant moment, which created my most distinct memory of the event. A man came up and asked if he could get a photo with our college captains. After the photo, he went to walk away and I asked him if I could fix the back of his collar up for him. He said, “yes” and also asked if I could do the tiny little buttons up that hold the front of the collar down. Once again he replied, “yes.” I asked him a few questions and it turned out that he had served in the army for 30 years. I felt it was an honour to have met this man and to have offered a small act of assistance. I went on to march with my head held high and with respect. It was amazing to march, to know about the men and women who served us proud, and that every name on every memorial wall in this country will be remembered. Lest We Forget.

CWA's International Children's Competition By Debbie Ives

Beerwah State School students from Prep to Year 4 took part in the CWA's International Children's Competition for the first time in many years. Each year the CWA select a country of study, and for 2014 it is Vietnam. The younger children took part by colouring in a Vietnamese lady, and Years 3 and 4 followed careful instruction to produce a poster sheet with details of the culture, currency, food and location of the country. The Beerwah CWA Branch members were invited to visit each classroom, sharing photos and props from Vietnam to inspire the students. The entries were judged by local artist Aannsha Jones, CWA member Simone Turner, and school teacher Anna de Oliveira. For the month of May the winning entries will be on display at The Beerwah Library. Beerwah CWA president Del Davis presented the winning students in school parade with their prizes. Beerwah State School and the CWA look forward to working together and building partnerships in the future. How does rental property work with income deductions? If you’re considering taking out home loans and purchasing investment property in the near future, it could be worth looking into the various tax obligations and deductions that can be embraced in the long run. These could potentially act as a draw card for you to pursue your property goals in the coming months. For example, if you earn a rental income from your investment property, you must declare this in your annual income tax return. However, this also means that you 16

could be entitled to claim income tax deductions from a portion of the costs involved – for example, the interest paid on your home loan. Furthermore, GST doesn’t apply to residential rental income, which means you aren’t liable to pay any GST on the rent you charge and can’t claim GST on associated costs. These rules change if you aren’t renting out the whole home as an investment property. If you’re only renting out specific rooms for income, you’re only entitled to claim deductions based on the floor

area plans. This includes spaces solely for their occupation, as well as reasonable allowances for access to general living areas like the kitchen, lounge and bathroom. In line with this, income received from family members for board or lodging is seen as a domestic arrangement and thus not treated as income. So while you won’t be taxed on this, you also can’t claim income deductions on the figures either. There are a wide range of responsibilities to understand when considering investment loans and

A Big Thank You What's in the Spotlight Fauna monitoring discovery The watermouse – one of Australia’s rarest rodents – has already been found during the largest fauna monitoring project to be undertaken in Sunshine Coast Council managed environmental reserves. The four year Environment Levy project will tell council exactly what wildlife is living in these reserves and help to improve conservation management. Residents can follow the project on council’s website and view videos and photos of reserve fauna.

Marketing and event workshops scene – the Sunshine Coast Events Network – is holding hands-on workshops on ‘Marketing with No Money’ and ‘Event Production and Programming’. The Beerwah-Peachester RSL Women's Auxiliary hosted morning tea for over 200 primary school children after the Anzac Service on Friday and we would like to commend the staff, leaders, teachers and parents on their behaviour. They sat quietly and respectfully throughout the service and at morning tea they were polite and well mannered, without exception. We have a lot to be proud of in Beerwah. Re: Cruise Ship Tourists

With Councillor Baberowski`s ‘Vision Splendid’ of attracting cruise ship tourists to the Hinterland, I must ask, would tourists really leave a multimillion dollar cruise liner to view a street in a rural community? I along with many other non-cruising locals (NCLs) humbly request that the good councillor addresses what we the aforementioned NCLs, see as important to our communities. Peachester, once awarded a Tidy Towns Title, along with the other wonderful Hinterland towns, all have areas that need attention. One example is the non / poorly serviced state of the walkways in Peachester, despite multiple requests spanning several years. Unstable walking surfaces, overhanging branches / vines, unrestrained savage dogs etc. Of late any complaints forwarded to council, (as the councillor is very difficult to contact personally) are met with a request that the complainant make a visit to council offices and fill out an official form there. It matters not that those without personal transport, spend almost an entire day using taxis and buses to meet the council’s demands.

I feel a good dose of basic council maintenance would put us in a far better position to open our arms and hearts to provide a hearty welcome to CST`s to our magic corner of this great country. The Poddy Dodger Peachester

Help needed to find us a home

My husband and I and our four children need to find a rental property soon or we won’t have anywhere to live. My husband has worked in Beerwah for the last three years and 12 months ago we moved our family to Beerwah so our children can attend Beerwah State School. As two of our children have disabilities, they require the assistance of the Special Education Unit at the school so we really want to be able to keep them there. We are prepared to pay up to $400.00 per week rent, and ideally we would love a four bedroom plus home, however after being unsuccessful on 15 separate rental applications, we now just need somewhere to live. I feel that we are being discriminated against – which I can only assume is because of complaints from neighbours regarding our children’s disabilities. I really don’t know where to turn, I have been to see ‘Public Housing’ and was told that if my husband was unemployed we would be a higher priority on their waiting list, but that we might have to do what many other families are doing and living in our car. Neither I or my husband has family living locally – so we don’t have anyone we can ask to help us out. I have letters of reference from local people who know us or have been neighbours. Local Music Scene All about Spring Burn

Four teenage boys from Beerwah High make up local Hinterland band, Spring Burn. Consisting of Dean Harrison on vocals, Ken Shibuya on guitar and backup vocals, Haydn Burnett playing drums and Locy Tester on bass, the boys have a heavy rock sound that produces an intense but energetic raw vibe. All currently students in Year 11, Dean and Hadyn have known each other since early childhood. Hadyn and Ken met at school in Year 8 and together they formed their first band. Since then, the boys have had a couple of different bands together before Locy joined the group in February 2013 and the band known as Spring Burn was established. Originally called the Defiants, soon after forming they decided to change their name and the moniker Spring Burn was decided upon. Named after the street that one of the band members live on, the name, “reminded them of home.” After sharing the stage with well known acts such as 28 Days, Evil Edie from Butterfingers, The Roshambos and Take Us To Vegas at the Glass House Mountains Festival, the boys have also achieved placement in numerous local battle of the bands and performed at local charity events. Participation in future events is in the pipeline and Spring Burn have gone from strength to strength. Recently they supported Take Us To Vegas at the Glass House Mountains community hall for a successful all ages gig. Although influenced by hard rock and heavy metal, such as Parkway Drive, Black Sabbath, Metallica and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, their set consists of mainly original material. The majority of songs are written by guitarist Ken who hails from a musical family and according to the band “has the most creative mind.” Balancing high school and part time work with practice, Spring Burn are consistently creating new material. Given their past accomplishments, the band is definitely one to keep an eye on in the future.

The Conductor Cult

Over the years I have attended a lot of live orchestral performances and to this day remain both fascinated and perplexed by the credit the conductor appears to be getting for the pieces they conduct. Do they deserve it? In some cases perhaps yes: they may have commissioned and / or programmed the work or they might be proposing a new reading of it (let’s assume it’s a well-known work), or they may have inspired the players to the point where they are giving their best possible performance. But in truth professional performers are always giving their best, so it is really just the little bit of magic that the conductor might find in the work – finessing the tempi here and there and rebalancing the orchestra. In fact in some works a conductor isn’t even required; either the players know the music well enough, or it simply doesn’t need someone out the front beating time. If you watch a conductor such as Herbert von Karajan on DVD you will see that some of the time (especially late in his career) he is not moving. It is as though he is directing the orchestra by sheer force of will. So who should we give credit to for that fantastic performance we have just heard? In truth it is the work first and foremost that we should applaud, followed by the performers then the conductor. That is not to denigrate conductors as artists - they are very fine musicians who by nature possess powerful personalities. Not that that necessarily wins them respect from performers. I heard a story first hand from a colleague who as a young artist played with the Berlin Philharmonic. At one rehearsal with a new conductor one of the old hands turned to him and said, “don’t follow the conductor, follow us, he will learn how we play this piece.” So when you next hear an orchestra live (and I do hope you will have that opportunity), and you applaud at the work’s conclusion, do thank the conductor for their sheer personal presence as much as the musical talent they obviously have, and give lots of applause for the players who really made that sound you have heard. But save, at least in your own mind, your biggest thank you for the composer, who somewhere sometime and somehow, with in most cases very little financial encouragement, actually made the work.

Beerwah District Kindergarten is holding a fun-filled community celebration day on Saturday, May 10, in appreciation of the State and Federal Government funding received for the major refurbishment of the Kindergarten. Mark McArdle MP will officially mark the occasion with a plaque presentation and cake cutting ceremony. This will be followed by a sausage sizzle and plenty of family fun activities. As a special part of the entertainment program, the Australia Zoo team will be attending to help celebrate and create some zany zoo fun. Much loved kindy teacher, Michelle Kramer has also been invited as a special guest on the day. Michelle has recently left the Kindergarten after 18 years of service and this is a great opportunity for families who have experienced Michelle as their teacher over the years, a chance to catch up and wish her well. On Wednesday, April 30, I hosted Vocational Education and Training (VET) Reform Workshop in Caloundra to facilitate discussions on the VET sector and provide the opportunity for training organisations to give feedback directly to the Government. The workshop was attended by a wide variety of organisations from across the Sunshine Coast including high schools, training providers and local employers. The aim of the workshop was to bring training providers and industry together to discuss ways to improve the delivery of skills and training, and to make sure the VET sector is providing the job-ready skills that businesses need. The workshop was a success and I believe that hosting this workshop was an important step to ensuring that our region’s school leavers and those seeking up skilling have the best chance of receiving quality training that leads to a job. I am encouraging young people, aged between 12 to 21, from across Glass House to apply for the Queensland Youth Strategy Ambassador program. This is an exciting new program the Queensland Government has introduced to showcase, celebrate and acknowledge young people who are working hard to reach their potential, as well as those who are inspiring or supporting other young people to do the same. The six selected ambassadors will each receive a $1,000.00 bursary for personal or professional development, and will be supported to attend a personal development workshop in Brisbane. Recipe for growth!

Thanks to the generous donations from Bunnings Caloundra, the hard work of some of the Morris House volunteers, a bit of rain and sunshine, the Morris House’s garden’s gone green! In early February, Bunnings Caloundra donated an assortment of gardening tools, fertiliser and plants to help restore Morris House’s garden back to working order. Within a few short months the Morris house volunteers are quite proud of their herb garden and their lovely vegetables. The garden is often used by the cooking group who meet every Thursday.

Plant of the month

Wallum bottlebrush (Melaleuca pachyphyllus)

This lovely plant was previously known as Callistemon pachyphyllus and commonly as Wallum bottlebrush. The bottlebrushes are among the most beautiful of native flowering plants and can be found in a wide range of colours. Hybrids of the more common colours do occur naturally but many have also been produced in specialist plant nurseries. Melaleuca pachyphyllus occurs in moist, coastal wallum soils from the central coast of New South Wales to southern Queensland. Two forms occur, though the red flowering form is more common than the green. The natural habitat of this plant is damp and sandy, even wet, but it can be grown successfully in most soils. Height rarely exceeds two metres and plant can be pruned to improve the shape. The bottlebrush flowers appear in spring and autumn but can be seen throughout the year. Melaleucas are an important food source for birds, butterflies and native bees. Unfortunately due to land clearing many are disappearing from their natural habitat as coastal wallum gives way to canal housing estates.

Approaching winter

As I write this week’s column, we are experiencing our first cold snap for the year. As usual, I have been preparing for the slightest excuse to relish the cool season delights: lighting the fire to warm the cool nights and cooking up hearty foods that fill the air with homely aromas. One of my all time favourite cool weather foods has to be my pumpkin, sweet potato and ginger soup with buttered crusty bread. Luckily, this year I have more than an abundance of produce for this with 100’s of pumpkins, expanses of sweet potato and an acre of ginger. So this column, I thought I’d share with you one of my favourite recipes and some key facts about storing pumpkins to see you through to next year’s season.

Pumpkin, Sweet Potato and Ginger Soup Ingredients 1 onion 2 teaspoons of freshly crushed garlic ¼ cup of finely grated fresh ginger 500g sweet potato cut into small pieces 500g pumpkin cut into small pieces 3 cups of chicken stock 150ml evaporated milk 1. Sautee onion, garlic and ginger in a little water. 2. Add sweet potato, pumpkin and chicken stock. 3. Bring to boil and simmer until veggies are tender. 4. Cool slightly and puree with blender until smooth. 5. Add condensed milk, stir and reheat. Enjoy with buttered crusty bread!

Picking and storing pumpkins

Many people ask me how I know when the pumpkins are ripe for the picking. I have heard of people say tapping it and it sounds hollow, but I have found that this is very subjective and therefore unreliable. The most dependable way I have found is by waiting for the small curly tendril at the junction of the pumpkin stalk and vine to begin to die, before picking. Once you get to the picking stage and you would like to be able to store your pumpkins, ensure you try to cut close to the vine, leaving the longest possible stem attached to your pumpkin. If you cut a short stem, it can often rot easily and the rot can enter your pumpkin. I also leave my pumpkins in the sun to dry out for a couple of days to harden the skin and dry the stalk, which helps to reduce attacks during storage. Choose a cool airy place to store your pumpkins and keep them stacked on their side. If left flat, often moisture accumulates around the stem and once again, rot can set in. Finally, check your pumpkins for soft spots every time you get a new one out, and use these ones first. However, if you happen to miss checking them, the rotten pumpkin stench and seeping liquid mass will certainly alert you to the problem. Hope everyone gets to embrace the delights of the cooler weather, from the crispy cool mornings and refreshing sunny days to the crystal clear night sky and warm log fires. Students from Glasshouse Country Christian College poured onto the Beerwah Sports Grounds not once but three times on Tuesday, April 29 for the Annual GCCC Cross Country. The students competed for individual placings but were also running for their house with the first four finishers of each house counting towards the teams’ race for houses. The Middle School students began the running three or four kilometres around the Beerwah Sports Grounds, nearby stream and parklands. Some races were closely fought and others were led by the winner right from the gun. Brooke Hughes, Natasha Hoeksema and Jack Fissenden all won by at least a minute but Jaylah Daunt and Chloe Dunford and Bakani Kombani and Patrick McKenzie fought close battles throughout their races. The Senior School followed with the Year 12 students savouring their final cross country race ever for many of them. Jacqueline Roach showed that training pays off by winning the 15 years girls’ race in the fastest 4km time for the girls. Cameron Shervey and Bailey Townsend battled it out in the 15 year boys’ race with Cameron winning by just six seconds with the fastest boys 4km time of the day. Finally, the Primary students arrived with the nine-year-olds quite nervous about running their first serious cross country race. After running many laps of the oval during the recent Lap-athon Challenge these students were ready to race. This was proven when the 11-year-old boys took to the course. It was a very tactical race with Sam Townson, Jacob Broderick and Declan Martin battling it out throughout the race. These boys ran the fastest 3km times of the day, beating all the 12 and 13 year old times. Aaron van Palen and Bryce Sambrook had the closest Primary race with only eight seconds separating them. Amy Trevan and Cassidy Ferris both led from start to finish in their races. When the final competition points were tallied from all the day’s competitions the unbelievable had happened. Two houses were exactly tied on points. However, after all the war cry and cheering points were added to the competition points, Ararat emerged as the Cross Country Champions on 395 points followed by Zion on 349 points and Sinai on 349 points.

Contributed by Deb Ives The Ngungun Triathlon Club held an Aquathlon on Sunday, April 27 at the Beerwah and District Swimming Pool, for kid's aged five and above. And for the first time, the club opened up the race to all ages and first timers, with huge success. There were nine first timers in attendance ranging in age from 30 to 50 plus years, taking part in the 2k run, 240m swim, and 1k. The race is not competitive and all participants were thrilled to receive a club medal and certificate. Alongside the nine adults, there were 30 kids ranging from five years to 13 years, each running and swimming a distance to suit their ability. The club has run kid's triathlons throughout the summer months, and is proud to be hosting a Duathlon series over the winter months at Skippy Park. A Duathlon is a run, cycle ride and run event. The races are well organised, and provide a safe environment for kid's to participate and have fun. All of the club events are non-competitive, and are testament to the clubs philosophy of providing a friendly, family orientated club for all ages and abilities. Auskick At Landsborough

Contributed by Craig Bales Glasshouse Hinterland's Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, May 8 from 4.00pm until 5.00pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for the age groups of five and six-years-old and those who are older, but not wanting to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over a 10 - 12 week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Queensland Auskick Co-ordinator Stuart Seager said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment. “The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL,” said Stuart. “Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark. Contributed by Jenny Kelly What a treat the weather has been lately. The nip in the air didn’t deter 63 ladies from coming out to compete for our May Monthly Medal. As always, the medal is generously sponsored by club professional John Mellish. John presented the winner of Division 1, Lynne Wroe with her medal after she came in with a 75 Nett. Lynne, a new member of our club, was closely followed by Andrea Campbell on 76 Nett. Winner of the Gross was Lea Garner who came in with 89 off the stick. Division 2 winner was Noelene Annakin with a great score of 72 Nett. Brenda Briese was runner up with a 74 Nett. A visitor from Nambour Golf Club, Jasmin Parkes, took out the Gross after she shot 98 off the stick. Pat Chapman who the Medal in Division 3 with a 78 Nett, followed by Marg Hunkin on 80 Nett. Winner of the Gross with 112 off the stick was Anne Stockwell. Nearest to the Pins went to Sue Williamson on 2, Cathy Stone on 5 and Andrea Campbell on the 16th Div. One on the 18 was won by Teresa Keast, while Marie Norton took out the NTP in Div 2. Joan Fletcher had her radar tuned in to win the putting with 27 Putts. The ball rundown went to 80 Nett. It seems winter has finally arrived so what better way to keep fit through the cooler months than to hit the fairways for some relaxing exercise. Until then stay warm and stay safe.

On May 1 the Travelling Bowlers set off to Bundaberg for our annual trip away. We played at Woodgate, Burnett and Moore Park Bowls Clubs.
