Hi Everyone... This week’s front cover acknowledges that this Sunday is the 11th day of the 11th month, which we acknowledge each year as Remembrance Day. However, as 2018 marks the centenary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I, the day is being commemorated with a range of interesting and ambitious projects. These include the Maleny RSL Sub Branch hosting a re-enactment of the original 1918 Maleny Victory Parade at 10am, which we featured in a profile article in last week’s edition. The Peachester History Committee will hold its traditional Remembrance Day service at the Peachester Cemetery and will also launch its ANZAC Gallery project in the recently constructed heritage building after lunch. There will be other services taking place across the area. Details of what is happening locally are featured in the story on page 5. Even if you choose not to attend an event, don’t forget at 11am to stop for one minute and give thanks to all those who sacrificed their todays for our tomorrows.

Local News No short term winners from Maleny Aquatic Centre feasibility study A report on the proposed Maleny Aquatic Centre will be presented to the Sunshine Coast councillors for their consideration at this Thursday’s (November 8) council meeting. The report is based on a feasibility assessment, funded by Cr Jenny McKay through her divisional discretionary funds, and builds on the previous 2013 feasibility study that looked at the need and demand for such a facility in Maleny. Although the 2013 report concluded that Maleny and the surrounding areas fall short of meeting council’s adopted service level standards for a ‘district – minor aquatic centre’ based on a population catchment of 20,000, Cr McKay responded to the considerable community desire for such a facility and requested that a location assessment be done. While the new report is more in-depth than previous studies, including concept plans and a recommended location for a facility within the Maleny Sports Precinct, it notes that no funding is provided in council’s ten year capital works program for a new aquatic facility in Maleny. The preferred option for a future site identified in the report is on lands leased by the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club downslope of the existing bridge club facilities. Community Parks Maleny campaign spokesperson
Jane Hyde has advised GC&M News that Cr McKay told her on October 31, 10 days before the meeting, that council would support the report. Ms Hyde believes the community views have been ignored in the choosing of the site. Of the two sites under consideration, the feasibility study shows that a site on the Northern Precinct would be more affordable, she said. “The southern site that falls within a larger area leased to the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club and the rest of the area, known locally as Platypus Bend, will revert the area to a previous use of playing fields, which were ruled out in 2012 due to feasibility and cost,” Ms Hyde said. “The effect of council endorsing this report will be to cover the upper part of the site with expensive built installations and remove the lower part from broad community use, such as a community park, until the lease expires in 27 years’ time. “We have no issue with indoor facilities such as swimming and hydrotherapy pools. However, the issue we have is with the site,” Ms Hyde said. She said councillors should postpone a decision until the local and broader community, “who are very much an interested party”, has an opportunity to contribute their ideas.

This Sunday, November 11, Queensland will join the rest of the country to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice. On the morning of November 11, 1918, Allied and German officials signed the Armistice, a formal agreement to cease the hostilities of World War I. When the agreement came into effect at 11am the guns of the Western Front fell silent for the first time in more than four years. With the fighting on the front lines suspended, the two sides could work towards a peace settlement and negotiate the treaties that would officially end the war – most notably the Treaty of Versailles signed on June 28, 1919. The signing of the Armistice was such a momentous event that its anniversary – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – quickly became a key date of commemoration and became known as Armistice Day. The tradition of stopping at 11am started on the first Armistice Day in 1919, and continues to this day. It was made official with a proclamation by King George V who requested that “...all locomotion should cease so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”. Communities continued to mark the Armistice anniversary each year. However, following World War II, the Australian and British governments agreed that the focus should be on all those who died in service of their country (not just the servicemen of World War I). The day was subsequently renamed Remembrance Day, but its traditions were largely unchanged.

The anniversary’s significance was reiterated in 1997, when Governor General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation urging Australians to “...observe, unless impracticable, one minute’s silence at 11am on Remembrance Day each year to remember the sacrifice of those who died or otherwise suffered in Australia’s cause in wars and war-like conflicts”. There are a couple of unique events happening this year in Maleny and in Peachester that will give a more localised understanding of the Armistice and the contribution made by local service personnel. Before the traditional Remembrance Day Service at the Maleny RSL Sub Branch, the sub branch has organised a re-enactment of the original 1918 Maleny Victory Parade down Maple Street from 10am. In the spirit of the original parade, the re-enactment promises to be a community event with numerous clubs and organisations represented. As well as the participation of direct descendants, cadets from TS Centaur will showcase a replica of HMAS Sydney built by Maleny Men’s Club and there will be representatives from Maleny Equestrian Group, 5th Light Horse troopers and the Bushrangers Rugby Union Club, who will be dressed as infantry pulling a cannon. Other parade participants will include members of Maleny Players dressed as swagmen, about 80 local school children and the Maleny Singers. Floats and cars will be provided by the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club and equestrian vehicles by Australian Carriage Driving Society, with an old ambulance to add to the authenticity.
Following the annual Remembrance Day service at the Peachester Cemetery that the Peachester History Committee (PHC) started back in 2007, the group will launch its Anzac Gallery project in its new heritage building located behind the Peachester Hall. Bringing together and retaining the military history of those originally from or who made their homes in Peachester and the surrounding district has been an on-going project for the PHC, and has included a wall of remembrance at the Peachester Cemetery as well as a book that was launched in 2015 titled ‘Peachester remembers’, which is a tribute to those locals who served their country. The PHC’s current project will see them create a tribute gallery, with a stained glass World War I memorial window as the first element incorporated into the display. The window is dedicated to Driver William Henry Hampton Hume, 16th Btn AIF, killed in action at Gallipoli on May 10, 1915. He is buried in the 4th Btn Parade Ground Cemetery, Gallipoli. The window was placed in a local church by his family and many years later when the church was moved, the Anglican Parish had the window restored and presented it to PHC in 2001. A photograph of WHH Hume was found and in recent years has been digitally restored and, together with the window, will be a highlight of the Anzac Gallery. The photo features on the cover of GC&M News this week. This project was one of many the State Government funded through a Spirit of Service Anzac Centenary grant.

Now that we can cash in our cans and bottles, do you know what you can return, where you can take them and how you can receive your refund? Make sure you know how it all works so it’s smooth sailing for you and for the organisations who collect the containers. There are five steps you need to follow. 1. Know your eligible containers. Most beverage containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for a refund. They will all have a refund mark on them so you know that it’s an approved refundable container. What’s not included are milk containers, wine and spirit bottles, large containers (one litre or more) which have contained flavoured milk, juice, cask wine or cask water, cordial or vegetable juice containers, wine sachets above 250ml, registered health tonics, and all containers smaller than 150mL or larger than three litres. If in doubt check for the refund mark on the label. Make sure labels aren’t damaged, the container is empty and has no lid, and it’s not broken or crushed.
Shop 15, Turner Park Shopping Village, 21 Peachester Road, PO Box 273, Beerwah Q 4519 Ph: (07) 5494 6566
2. Locate your nearest return locations. The website www.containersforchange.com.au has the locations on a searchable map, and it will be updated as more locations come on line. 3. Sign up to the scheme of the organisation running the refund point you will use. There are a number of different schemes, so make sure you look into the scheme and sign up before turning up with your bottles and cans. Different schemes will organise the refund in different ways. 4. Return your containers. Each scheme will have different ways you can do this. Some locations will have a reverse vending machine where you feed each container into the machine and it tallies your refund there and then. Some locations are drop-off points where you leave your containers (mostly in various styles of bags) to be processed in a day or two. 5. Collect or donate your refund. When you sign up to a scheme, you choose how you get your refund – that could be in cash, electronic funds transfer, a voucher or donated to a selected charity.

At the time of going to print, there were three local collection points registered on the Containers for Change website and all are drop-off points. At Maleny, there is a drop-off at the Bloomhill Op-Shop (17 Maple Street). The Return-It Express scheme is a drop-and-go system. You take your containers in transparent bags and the Bloomhill staff will tag them with a barcoded sticker to identify it as yours. The bags are taken away, processed and your account is credited the refund. See www.returnit.com.au/qld for more details. The Beerwah Hotel (next to Bottlemart, pictured below) and Aussie World (near the flower shop) have an Envirobank drop-and-go machine. You put your containers in one of the bags they provide and drop it into the machine.

The developers of a controversial petrol station proposal in Maleny have lodged their response to the Sunshine Coast Council’s eight-page notice requesting substantially more information than originally provided. In June, the council flagged a number of significant problems with the application as submitted on behalf of the Brisbane developers, Synergy Property Partners. According to the notice, council considered there were multiple flaws in the planning justifications originally provided. Place Design Group (PDG), the town planning consultants used by Synergy Property Partners, has now submitted eight documents, totalling 237 pages of information. In a covering letter, PDG said it had provided a “full response” to council’s requests and acknowledged Maleny’s unique rural community, saying “… considerable design effort has been made to ensure that the development is sympathetic to the local area”. The letter also said that “… design changes have been made to address the traffic concerns raised by council and to improve the development’s interface with the streetscape and wider public realm”. Mirroring a statement made in the original planning application, PDG was at pains to emphasise that, although submissions had been made to council about the development, “…the application is code assessable, with no third party appeal rights”, reminding council that it cannot take into account community sentiment or aspirations for the local township.

The enchanting mural
The cover of last week’s GC&M News featured the beautiful mural created at Beerwah Kindy by talented Peachester artist Sally Joyce. The mural, which was a labour of love by the kindy mum, was based around the life cycle of the dainty swallowtail and orchard swallowtail butterflies which the children were able to see transform from caterpillars into butterflies earlier in the year. While these components on their own are incredibly lifelike, Sally says the power of imagination and her desire to integrate the mural into the existing garden saw it evolve each time she set in for a day of painting. Areas surrounding the wall have been incorporated into the masterpiece, with large leaf and log stepping stones painted onto the pathway in front and the existing fairy garden pathway continued across the concrete and up into the mural. Her son Toby, who is a current kindy student, appears peeking outside the trunk of a tree and little Anna, who always gets tucked into a cocoon on her bed at naptime each day, can be seen curled up under a tree. The silhouette of four kindy friends playing appears in the middle of the wall. With so many elements, people of all ages find something new each time they look at the mural. “I just wanted to create something special for them that they would enjoy for years to come,” Sally said.
“The children also painted their own rocks with their names on them to put into the fairy garden and we will be able to continue doing this each year,” she said. Kindy teacher Rebecca Mackintosh said Sally had really transformed the area into a beautiful play space. “We even had one kindy friend just the other day standing next to the wall imagining that she was stepping into the scene to explore and play,” Rebecca said. “With the kindy friends painted onto the wall, it is also a bit of a time capsule and we are so blessed to have this beautiful work of art to add to our play space,” she said. You can come and see the transformation for yourself.

The Jewellers Bench also boasts a charming courtyard right on the main street that will be opened to create a pop-up shop available to hire. For only $50 a day, people can hire the pop-up shop to sell their goods from a specially designed market stall. No matter what you have to sell, be it antique jewellery to collectables or your own handcrafts, this space provides the perfect opportunity to showcase your wares. The Jewellers Bench is taking hire bookings now for the pop-up shop from mid-November right through December. So why not earn yourself some extra Christmas spending money? While you’re there, take the time to browse some of The Jewellers Bench designs. They are taking orders now for custom-made Christmas gifts and redesigns, and also have a range of reasonably priced pieces that would be perfect for that special someone.

‘The MonSter’ - a journey with multiple sclerosis By Sonia Clark For most people to write and publish their own book is quite an achievement, but for Beerwah resident Sharon Millow the fact that she suffers from an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis (MS) makes her achievement all the more incredible. Sharon moved to Beerwah in 2015 from the Glass House Mountains, where she had lived for the previous 13 years. She is well known throughout the community for her zippy manoeuvers in her motorised wheelchair. Her determination to remain out and about characterises her undaunted spirit in the face of her degenerative health challenges and her “stubborn need” to be independent. Sharon still remembers the lead up to her MS diagnosis on March 24, 2007. She said that up until that year she had been fit and healthy, enjoying her involvement with her children, work and volunteer commitments. Picking strawberries one day, she thought she had rolled her ankle. However, the injury didn’t seem to heal over time and during a subsequent visit to a physiotherapist other reactions were noticed such as foot drop which were consistent with MS. On advice from the physio, Sharon sought further medical diagnosis. The basis of her book started out as a diary she kept following diagnosis. Sharon said that she kept notes to track the changes in her body and the medication she was taking and how it affected her.
Over the following years she amassed a huge bundle of exercise books filled with handwritten notes until she was no longer able to use her hands for writing. In more recent years, technology has allowed Sharon to continue with her story using voice-totext. She sent her diary notebooks from 20072012 to a friend in New Zealand who kindly offered to type them up. Not wanting the story to end in 2012, Sharon said she then trawled through her old Facebook posts for additional material. “I didn’t want the story to stop in 2012, so I added extra sections from my Facebook memories. I included stories about some of the characters I’d met in hospital, the mobility aids I had to use and what life was like without legs that worked,” Sharon said. A few months ago Sharon joined the Beerwah Writers Group and read the prologue and introduction to her story, which was very well received. One of the group members, Ethel Witherspoon, offered to edit the book and also enlisted family members to assist with layout and photography. Sharon said she named the finished 300-page book ‘The MonSter’, both as a way of highlighting MS in the title and because it has been a “nasty horrible thing” to go through. The cover image is a copy of a painting by Sharon following her initial diagnosis when she was feeling a bit blue and confused about it all.
EPM Printer Paul Harkness, Sharon and Ethel Witherspoon With a grant received through the Beerwah Writers Group, Sharon was able to have 250 copies of her book printed by Express Print & Mail, printers based in Maroochydore, and says she feels very proud of what she has achieved. “Some days are better than others living with MS but we are all here for such a short time – so no matter what, don’t let things stop you living,” she said. Sharon will launch her recently published book on Wednesday, November 14 at the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church at 10am. To find out more or to purchase a copy visit her Facebook page - Sharon Millow.

Koalas in care are benefitting from the efforts of local environmental group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Inc). GMAN’s new koala food tree plantation, established with the generous help of a Sunshine Coast Council Environment Levy Partnership Grant, is starting to produce edible foliage. The trees have been specifically grown to provide leaf for koalas in care, and after all the recent rain you can almost hear the trees growing. There is a knack to cutting leaf from a tree without damaging it. Last week Cr Rick Baberowski witnessed first-hand the intricacies of leaf cutting by Gerry Zains an expert leaf cutter from Endeavour Veterinary Ecology, a Queensland-based company that provides specialised ecological, veterinary and wildlife management services. Gerry demonstrated to GMAN members the art of harvesting foliage from a tree while protecting it for posterity. This was the first trial harvest from the new plantation, albeit a small one. Until the trees are larger and more sustainable, the plantation will provide only a limited amount of leaf for two small koala-care entities. GMAN’s first koala food tree plantation continues to produce edible foliage. Koala food plantations are just one of many projects undertaken by GMAN. The group has been working tirelessly in our local environment for more than 25 years to ensure that the Glass House Mountains region is an enjoyable and environmentally-sound place in which to play and work. For more information check out the GMAN website www.gman-inc.com.au, Facebook page or email ghmgman@gmail.com.

Passionate about offering high quality pool servicing, inspections and related maintenance and equipment, the business has gone from strength to strength, resulting in the opening of their Nambour retail store two years ago. Andy says they have amazing staff and the entire team genuinely loves what they do.

Coming, staying, leaving … forward to focussing on the retail and business side. Already brimming with ideas, Denese plans to expand the current range to include other health and wellness related products, and offer additional retail diversity and healthy food options. Current practitioners Melanie Larsen (Bowen therapy) and Emily Bendensen (kinesiology) will continue to offer their therapeutic services. Denese said that in the new year the business will look for a massage therapist and naturopath to join the team. Long-term team member Sara will continue in her customer focus role. Leanda is thrilled that the retail business of The Healthy Guru will continue to offer high quality alternative health related products and practitioners in Beerwah. She is also excited to be channelling her considerable energy towards her new venture – Ashwattha Wellness Retreat – at the recently purchased 17ha (43 acre) property north of Gympie.
After five successful years under the guidance and vision of Craig and Leanda Harmer, The Healthy Guru in Beerwah has changed hands with Glass House Mountains local Denese Brookes taking on the daily running of the business. With nearly 20 years’ experience building up her family-owned commercial manufacturing business, Denese has for some time been keen to focus her energy into a local opportunity that resonated personally. She said that while her core skills were in business management and accounting, her true passion had always been for health and nutrition. “I’m so excited to be taking over this incredible space that Craig and Leanda have developed over the past five years,” Denese said. “This amazing opportunity to continue to offer our local community vibrant alternative health options, products and practitioners feels like it has has fallen in my lap, and I’m incredibly grateful to be involved in this new and exciting business adventure.” Denese has been familiar with the business for some time and is full of praise for the insight, passion and product knowledge of the team. She sees incredible growth in the alternative health and wellness industry, and looks forward to continuing to offer locals the convenience of having access to quality alternatives in Beerwah without having to travel elsewhere. You Said It Re: Fair share
Many residents and ratepayers in and around Maleny agree with every word in Jane Hyde’s letter in GC&M News October 24 on the “sorry state of affairs” related to public parks in and around Maleny. It is disappointing that after all these years we still have to literally wage a battle to gain just another bench, picnic table, amenities block, playground equipment, etc to make the few public parks more user friendly to the public and cater for the ever increasing number of visitors to our area. The astounding fact overall is that Sunshine Coast Council was fortunate enough to have two of its main assets - Mary Cairncross Park and Gardeners Falls - gifted to them. While the Thynne family received recognition for their worthy deed, Harry Whitehouse’s efforts in gaining public possession for Gardeners Falls has yet to be acknowledged. Mary Cairncross Park has received the lion’s share of funding and public works. Basic facilities at, and even adequate signposting to, Gardeners Falls have a long way to go. What is definitely an absolute must is the urgent need for more new, easily accessible public parks to cater for the increase in numbers and Platypus Bend is one of the logical solutions to this dilemma. I call on anyone, regardless of whether they live or only visit here, to support Jane Hyde’s serious efforts in achieving this. Gaby Luft Maleny
Re – Plastic bag transition
Thank you James Aitken (GC&M News, October 24) for keeping this conversation flowing. It’s such an important one. I was unsure as to how to transition away from plastic bags, then I remembered that in my childhood my mother would wrap the food scraps in newspaper and put it in the bin. So now I use a reusable plastic bag and line it with newspaper or a big paper bag (the ones from the butchers are great for this purpose). The paper bag or newspaper is emptied into the garbage each week and I keep the reusable plastic bag, which will last me for months. I wash it if necessary. Actually James, you’ve given me a great idea. I will ask IGA to order in large brown paper bags for bin liners as they would work a treat! We are the caretakers of the earth and the

oceans. Do we want to suffocate them with plastics or do we want a cleaner ocean and a healthier, thriving earth to feed and nurture ourselves and our children and their children? Also, the silk eco bag from the health food shop is light and folds up very small. Men can put it in their pockets and when you open it up it’s the size of Dr Who’s TARDIS! Deborah Wilson Maleny
Chevrons
Does anyone know what they are? Well, should you ever drive south from the Caloundra Road on the Bruce Highway you will see signs that are very clearly posted advising drivers to keep two chevrons from the car in front. Now no one is going to tell me our elected representative don't drive this road and see what has happened. But what have they done about it nothing whatsoever. Last week I had an English friend travelling with me and he saw the sign and commented about what a great idea it was, but asked where were the chevrons themselves. I had to direct his eyesight to the roadway in front and he had to strain to actually see or make out the badly faded painted chevrons on both south bound lanes of the Bruce Highway. Perhaps there are no workers who can paint white chevrons on the roadway anymore or is it that Queensland Transport and Main Roads or our elected representatives don't give a bugger anymore? If this is the case, then why not remove the signage, which is a distraction to motorists, and they won't be looking for the chevrons on the road. It might help save a life or even two. Editor’s note
Update on concern about the exercise tunnel at the Landsborough Dog Park. Cr Rick Baberowski has thanked Karen King for her advice to council regarding her concerns over the tunnel exercise at the Landsborough Dog Park (GC&M News, October 31). He requested that the area be immediately taped off and the issue be urgently raised with the contractor who was to return to the park the following day to make it safe. Cr Baberowski said he understood the contractor would install more planks of wood along the top to sufficiently close the gaps. “The equipment was selected trusting that the design was in common use and safe. I have made sure that [Ms King’s] feedback and my strong concern are provided to the manufacturers, as it seems obvious that the designers should have anticipated some unintended use,” he said.

Mortgage myth buster: things you need to know about mortgages Taking out a mortgage to buy a home is a big step. There are a number of mortgage myths in circulation. Here, we bust some of those preconceptions, to help you make the right decision. Mortgage myth #1: The lowest rate is always preferable. Some lenders advertise lower interest rates than others but the lowest rate might not be the most competitive. Sometimes, a low rate incurs other fees, which a slightly higher rate may not. The lowest rate might not be the most flexible, and may not have other interest saving features that a slightly higher rate loan product might, e.g. an offset account. Mortgage myth #2: You need a 20 per cent deposit to secure a mortgage. Housing affordability reports such as those compiled by CoreLogic assume buyers have a 20 per cent lump sum deposit. Because of this, 18
some buyers believe they cannot secure a mortgage without the 20 per cent lump sum. But this is not the case. The Reserve Bank of Australia states that some lenders accept a deposit as low as 5-10 per cent. Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI) can reduce the deposit required. The cost may be rolled into the mortgage or can be paid as a lump sum. Getting into the market now rather than waiting until you have the full 20 per cent deposit might be advantageous, an option worth considering. If you don’t have the 20 per cent deposit, ensure you are not overextending, as a lower downpayment will mean larger repayments and interest costs over time. Mortgage myth #3: You need to pay mortgage broker fees. The lender pays the mortgage broker, not you. A mortgage broker helps you get a competitive loan that is right
for you, and weigh up complex decisions, such as low interest rates versus higher fees. Mortgage myth #4: The Reserve Bank of Australia controls the rate, so rates aren’t competitive. While the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) changes their rate depending on economic growth, lenders are able to adjust their rates independently. The lender’s rates will likely reflect the RBA rate, but lenders are also concerned about being competitive. Reviewing your loan regularly to ensures it is the most competitive option for you. Mortgage myth #5: Pre-qualification secures your loan. The purpose of prequalification is to let you know how much you are eligible to borrow. This does not mean your loan is approved. You will need to provide further documentation, and receive approval to secure the loan.
Mortgage myth #6: There is no difference between paying your loan weekly, fortnightly or monthly. This is not true. Paying your loan fortnightly will mean you pay less interest over the life of your loan. You will pay even less interest if you pay it weekly. It was a great day and saw staff, students, parents and community members all come together in support of the school. Thanks must go to the P&C executive team and all members for the dedication and hard work they have put in leading up to the day and on the day itself to ensure that the event was so successful. Funds raised will go to improving the school oval and assisting in other works to enhance learning and opportunities for students at the school.

Students shine
Contributed by Steph Alksne As the school chaplain at Beerburrum State School, this term I had the privilege to lead a group of amazing year 6 girls through a program called ‘Shine’. The program takes them on a journey to help them understand their worth (how they feel and think about themselves), strength (being strong on the inside) and purpose (what they think about their future and life ahead). The nine-week program has valuable content to help the girls transition well to high school. Every week the girls receive a small gift that represents what we have spoken about in the group session. Some of these gifts have been generously donated from local businesses. We have had the privilege of mentors from the community visit to share and teach the girls about how valuable they are. For our last session we are excited to be dining at the Black Squirrel coffee shop in Beerburrum to celebrate our time together. It really is such a great opportunity to help these girls understand how amazing they are and to see them truly shine. Chaplain Steph, Bianca, Emmason, Baylee, Jemma and Sharnae

QCCS - Introducing new team members Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre is excited to have recently welcomed three new team members – Bree McCaan, Dawn Chant and Casey Carmen (pictured). Centre coordinator Dee McCaan says she is thrilled to welcome the new members to the centre ‘family’, and looks forward to working closely with them as they integrate into the centre and get to know the children and their families. Bree McCann is currently working as assistant educator in the senior kindy room, and is loving the lively interaction with the three-four year-old age group. Bree says she enjoys working with all early education age groups and has grown up to follow her family into the industry. This is her first year in the industry and she is looking forward to developing her skills and knowledge with the same level of passion as her family members. On a personal level, Bree owns a black cat called Batman and comes from a ‘superhero’ driven family. Her favourite colour is blue and she loves to travel. Recently she was fortunate to explore Europe with highlights including a picnic on the hills of ‘The Sound of Music’, and visits to Waterloo and the Eiffel Tower. Industry professional Dawn Chant has more than 20 years’ experience in early childhood education. She is the mother of four daughters and the proud grandmother of 14 children – which keeps her busy! Dawn, who moved to the area in July, said she immediately fell in love with the village lifestyle and the wonderful way the community made her feel welcome. Through her early childhood work, she loves to capture and celebrate moments of achievement and feels

privileged to be part of the amazing team of educators at the centre who are kind, caring and compassionate. Apart from joining the centre family, Dawn particularly appreciates the online documentation system that is easily accessible for families. She sees it as a brilliant way for parents and carers to stay in touch and be involved with their child’s development – especially if they have other commitments or are working. She also believes that healthy eating is a way of life that is embedded in the centre culture and this supports her vision of children’s health and wellbeing for long life goals. Experienced with all age groups, Dawn will provide support over all the rooms and will be the constant float person for programming and ongoing support throughout the centre. Locally based Casey Carmen is the centre’s current school-based trainee, working in a program that highlights and supports future industry growth. Casey is in year 11 and loves participating in community events and playing soccer. Her favourite colour is yellow and she
loves going on adventures, whether it be road trips, camping, travelling and - most importantly – shopping. With end-of-year festivities fast approaching, there is a lot of activity at the centre. The children are getting particularly excited about their involvement in the Beerwah Community Carols. If you would like to find out more about the centre, potential availabilities, or for an obligation free tour of the centre, please call 5438 7311, or drop in anytime to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Airport expansion on track The Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project has reached another milestone with sand dredging and pumping operations completed. Around 1.3 million m³ of sand will form the foundation of the new runway, on track for completion by Christmas 2020, which will enable direct access to new markets in Asia, the Pacific and nationally.

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast 2019 heritage calendar It was a real pleasure to announce and meet the winners at the launch of the 2019 heritage calendar, held on Friday, October 26. The heritage calendar is produced to celebrate and showcase the unique cultural heritage of our region. This year, the calendar features Sunshine Coast architecture with photos drawn from the private collections of six locals who were winners of the heritage calendar photo competition. As we move towards Christmas, if you have a loved one in the ‘hard to buy for’ category, why not consider giving them the Architecture: Past and present 2019 heritage calendar. The calendar is a showcase of both old and contemporary architecturally diverse, well-designed and historic buildings across the Sunshine Coast (my favourite is May – The rustic cabin 1939). The calendar is proudly supported by your council’s cultural heritage levy. You can purchase a copy from council library branches and customer service centres for only $6.
Your newest dog park opens Residents of Landsborough and surrounds now have an additional dedicated area to exercise their four-legged companions, with the new fenced dog off-leash area on Caloundra Street now open. The park is equipped with a reasonable range of rural looking agility equipment such as rocks and natural elements to allow it to fit into a country town setting. There were a couple of adjustments made after we received feedback from early users, but on the whole users are delighted with it. Part of the important role of dog parks is to provide increasingly needed opportunities for owners to socialise and exercise their dogs. The Landsborough dog park also makes good use of an otherwise unused easement. I believe the dog park complements the excellent woodlands entry into the township of Landsborough and is also not far from the incredibly popular allabilities playground at Pioneer Park, which has recently undergone significant upgrades. This area now offers an even better range of recreational opportunities. The dog park has two interconnected fenced areas, one catering for medium to large dogs and one more suited to small dogs. The project also includes new car parking and extended walkways to provide easy access to the park. Do not wait any longer to come and try the new dog off-leash area.
Start planning your year ahead with the 2019 Heritage Calendar. Hertiage Levy funded, it is available from council’s library branches and Customer Service Centres for only $6.

State Member for Caloundra Argument to spark the nuclear energy discussion
As the world moves towards lowcarbon renewable energy, thoughts are turning to the debate over nuclear power as an economic source of electricity generation. I accept there are many who have concerns about the safety of nuclear energy and the radioactive waste it produces. However, the next generation of reactors could provide food for thought. Technology is making enormous strides and improvements make it possible to build safer reactors. Small modular reactors (SMRs), or generation IV reactors, with more in-built safety systems are set to make nuclear power safer and potentially cheaper. Nuclear power plants are expensive to build, but relatively cheap to run. The World Nuclear Association claims: “If the social, health and environmental costs of fossil fuels are also taken into account, the competitiveness of nuclear power is improved”. The ready availability of uranium in Australia plus political stability provides an environment for nuclear-fuelled base-load electricity generation plants into the long term. This contrasts with the declining availability of crude oil. The federal Member for Petrie, Luke Howarth, was recently quoted as saying “the nation should be having the discussion about how to build a nuclear industry” because it would help drive the “jobs of the future”. While the utilisation of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas – continues to raise environmental concerns, nuclear power is considered to be clean and green with very low greenhouse gas emissions. Yet it can’t be denied that nuclear energy may pose other risks related to the safe disposal of highly radioactive wastes. Australia has seen Three Mile Island in the USA in 1979 and Chernobyl in the Ukraine in 1986 and walked away from nuclear power generation. If we follow the mantra of being technology agnostic then we need to face all questions and not let emotions dictate the outcome. Combining the advantages of security, reliability and low greenhouse gas emissions nuclear power could hold the key to cheaper electricity. Can it be concluded that nuclear power replacement of fossil fuel-fired electricity generation is a viable debate today?
Hospitals ramping goes from bad to worse
I am disappointed that local residents are now faced with worsening ramping at the coast’s major hospitals - Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) and Nambour Hospital. Ramping is how long a patient lies on a trolley before they are treated by a doctor or nurse in an emergency department and the absolute longest a patient should wait is 30 minutes. In December 2017, 24% of patients at the SCUH and 18% of patients at Nambour Hospital were waiting more than 30 minutes before getting into the emergency department. By August 2018 the number of patients waiting more than 30 minutes had blown out to 28% at SCUH and 27% at Nambour Hospital. caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Search us on Facebook Mark McArdle MP

Cappriccio’s a great place to celebrate
While Brownie and I didn’t go to the effort of dressing up for Halloween, we definitely enjoyed the great atmosphere and the fun that the team at Cappriccio’s Italian Pizza Restaurant in Maleny created for the spookiest night of the year. While not everyone was out for Halloween, the Merlino family from Maleny really seemed to be enjoying the chance to celebrate Joe Merlino’s 88th birthday and he didn’t seem to mind too much that there was an eyeball floating in his beer. Couldn’t help but notice a vegetarian we know from Peachester enjoyed the ‘vege’ twist the chef created for the special of the evening – a brain pizza (pictured). Local kids who were out trick or treating were rewarded for their efforts and received some tasty treats. If you are looking for a fun venue for your Christmas parties or a place to catch up with friends before Christmas, Cappriccio’s can

Trick or treat

The customers at Mooloolah IGA may have got a bit of a fright when they ordered their cold meat on Wednesday.
things to do Singers to reach a new pinnacle
Contributed by Ian McMaster The Maleny Singers are currently rehearsing a condensed version of Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’, an opera some say is the greatest ever written. Having listened to a recent rehearsal, I can assure patrons they will experience some of the best operatic singing they will hear outside professional companies. Success, they say, breeds success, and the singers’ high performance standard continues to attract quality new voices. In this production, Sarah-Jane Abbott (the countess) takes on her first principal role, joining established favourites Colin Dunn (the count), Evalee Sharples (Susanna), Tony Glazebrook (Figaro) and Viera Keogh (Cherubino). Mozart delivers some fabulous and well known melodies, and the libretto goes to extremes in creating ever more hilarious comic scenes. As the pace and number of actors on stage builds, so does the comic tension. It is simply hilarious to watch. For those who are not opera buffs, it is in English. The performance is on at the Maleny Community Centre November 9, 10 and 11. Tickets from trybookings.com.au or Maleny Information Centre.

CLAIM SCRAPPING VALUE WHEN UPGRADING OR RENOVATING Scrapping, or residual value, is a depreciable element that many property investors overlook. You can claim a tax deduction for fixtures and fittings that are replaced during an upgrade or renovation. Have a quantity surveyor review your renovation plans and estimate what you will ‘lose’ when throwing out old carpets, kitchen cabinets or other fittings. This ‘scrapping’ amount can be claimed as a tax deduction.

In the Garden Peachester Horticultural Society Vege Notes
Leeks
I love leeks. They’re easy to propagate from seed (has to be super fresh – old seed is no good), can be grown among other plants (conditions apply), will happily wait in the garden until you need to pick them, and can be used in so many different ways in the kitchen. If you follow ‘when to grow’ guides, now isn’t recommended as the best time to be planting leeks. However, I’ve found you can grow leeks all year round. Some plantings take longer than normal to get to maturity, but they always come through in the end. I grow all my leeks from seed - fresh bought seed. I don’t try to save my own seed as you don’t really need many to keep you going. If you save seed you tend to keep too much for too long and end up disappointed when you try to germinate them. Cover the seed with a thin (4mm) layer of fine seed-raising mix and keep them evenly moist. Keep them in a warm, protected space that doesn’t get direct sunlight as once they germinate they burn easily until they get to about 6cm tall. I just put mine under some shade cloth. They are slow germinators and can take up to two weeks. Don’t transplant them out until they are 20cm high. They will be fine crowded into a small punnet or pot until they reach that height. Prepare your bed by digging over to a fine tilth (if you don’t know what that is, look it up as it’s important for growing veges) and add some compost and chook poo pellets. I like to add a little dolomite to sweeten the soil as the allium group of plants (leeks, onions, garlic and chives) like it just under pH 7. When ready to plant, take the seedlings out of the punnet/pot and wash the seed raising mix off the roots. If they are long, you can trim these down by cutting off a third of the roots. Plant the seedlings by poking a hole and putting the seedling into it – it’s that easy. Plant them so that the top of the roots is a couple of centimetres below the soil level. Squish the soil back around the roots. Plant them 15cm apart to give their roots space to grow out. Water them in – I like to use a liquid horse manure brew that I use for all my seedlings – and side dress with a good fertiliser. Leeks need nitrogen and moisture when they are growing, so side dress with blood and bone often. They also don’t like root competition, so keep the weeds under control and don’t plant them with other veges that have adventurous roots. Carrots, turnips, beetroot and even fancy leaf lettuce can be grown interspersed with leeks. They don’t have many pest problems – mine are sometimes attacked by caterpillars, but rarely. You will need patience before harvesting as they are slow growers – up to 4-5 months - but the beauty of leeks is that they will stay ready to pick in the garden for months, so you don’t have to pick and store them. Just leave them in the soil and pick one or two as needed. Some people cut them off a little way above the soil instead of pulling them out as you can get a second leek growing from the centre. This will be a smaller leek, but it gives you two for the price of one. I tend to sow new seeds every time I plant out the seedlings, so that I get a continual progression of leeks all year round. And that’s why I love leeks.
Contributed by Patricia Bradford At the recent meeting members commented on what an enjoyable day we had in Coral Beutel's garden the previous month. Rob Morris showed off a range of small capsicums and shared seeds and seedlings with members. John Innes mentioned that 50 different varieties of chilies are grown in hot houses in Suffolk, England. We decided to once again combine with the Peachester CWA for our Christmas breakup party, to be held on Friday, November 30 with lunch at King Ludwigs Restaurant in Maleny. The final meeting for the year will be held in the garden of Trish and Gary. Bring along a chair and your meat to enjoy a barbeque lunch. Visitors are always welcome. For more details phone 5496 9169.
Backyard wildlife
with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery
Small furry creatures with sharp teeth, claws and beady little eyes get a lot of bad press in our culture thanks to the feral rats that have followed us across the planet. However, we also have many native rodents and other small furry creatures that play important roles in our ecosystems. The bush rat (Rattus fuscipes) can be found in our forests and heathlands and is cute and timid - although they can still give you a nip when cornered. They feed on native fruits and seeds and help disperse native plants. Also found in our area are the amazing antechinus. Antechinus are not rodents but small carnivorous marsupials and high energy predators that have short life spans, especially the poor males, who live for nine months before going out in a blaze of glory after exhausting all their energy in the mating season. All our small mammals are prey for larger fauna, which brings me to the delicate issue of rodent control. Please consider carefully when deciding how to control those annoying little critters that are scratching in your ceiling. Many rat poisons, particularly the systemic poisons (they don’t just kill the rats but also the animals that eat the poisoned rats), are dangerous to other animals. Victims can include owls, tawny frog mouths, carpet snakes and quolls to name a few. Snap traps are brutal but effective with no chance of killing the predators listed above. If you think you might have antechinus instead of introduced mice, use a live trap to catch them, then release outside. However, if you do have an antechinus in your house and can tolerate them (they can stretch the friendship at times), you will never have a mouse or cockroach problem again! So remember, next time you are jumping onto the table as a small furry creature scurries by, it may just be a friendly local and not necessarily a “dirty rat”. Spencer and his wife Karen Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery 20 Coral Street, Maleny in Maleny. Their nursery concentrates on local native plants, 07 5435 2193 bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, nonOPEN Tue - Fri 9am-5pm invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology Sat 8am - 2:00pm education, books, DVDs, art and so much more.

Beerwah Walkers Group
Contributed by Frank Cockram Each weekday a group of locals meet at 6.30am at the Beerwah Library carpark for a pleasant one-hour walk. We very much welcome new walkers. Recently the group helped former member Peter Dodwell celebrate his 90th birthday with a breakfast at his home. Phone Frank on 5494 0709 for more information.
From the churches Life is not linear
There is freedom in realising that life is not linear, ie, “arranged in or extending along a straight or nearly straight line”. Some have said life is organic. When things come from left field that we didn’t expect we need to remember that God doesn’t call us to understand; he calls us to trust Him. It’s easy to say when you are in a comfortable, secure position that you trust God. But trust and faith are exercised when there is a turn or twist in the road that you didn’t see coming and you were not prepared for. Nothing catches God by surprise as He knows the beginning from the end. God uses this moments and times to strip everything away from us, even good things, so we are only left with a relationship with Him. He is wanting us to know that our true identity is found in Him, not in the things and circumstances around us. The Proverbs say: Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
Mind matters - A journey of exploration into mindful practices including chanting, gratitude, sitting and walking is held at the Beerwah Library meeting room on Mondays 6.30-8pm at no charge. For more information phone Peter McGuirk 0429 918 424.

Sport Golfing gold for Ashleigh As a teenager Peachester’s Ashleigh Birch won gold buckles in the fast paced horse rodeo event of barrel racing. But these days, following a kidney transplant, she is getting used to the meandering walk of the golf course. The determined young woman, who is now 25, recently showed that although she might be participating at a slower pace her competitive spirit hasn’t been diminished. While still quite new to the sport of golf she recently came home with a gold medal from the Australian Transplant Games. Ashleigh competed for the first time in the Transplant Games, held on the Gold Coast in October, in the women’s 20-29 year age group. Ashleigh is keen to thank both her family and the Beerwah Memorial Golf Club’s pro golf instructor Vicky Uwland for their support in her recent achievement. Ashleigh’s proud mum Kathy Birch said the Australian Transplant Games was the country’s most inspirational sporting event bringing together those touched by transplantation and giving them an opportunity to showcase their renewed health. “For transplant recipients the games are a way to say thanks for their second chance at life, and for donor families a way to honour their loved one’s gift,” she said. Now Ashleigh is hoping to follow up her success at the World Transplant Games to be held in Newcastle/Gateshead in the UK in August 2019.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 The planet Uranus is now back tracking into your sign, and may shake your foundations. So what you thought was resolved might rise again. There is no need to take rash action or risky measures. Adapt as best you can. There is a New Moon in Scorpio and that encourages a deep examination of any situation to understand it. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There are several planets giving you twists and turns this month, and may certainly disrupt your preferred steady life rhythm. It is also interesting that the planet Uranus retrogrades out of your sign and back into Aries. It will remain there until early March. There is a magnetic field of energy now around your relationships. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 The Universe has four planets that are retrograding at various times, including your ruler Mercury, which of course, later this month, has a habit of causing alterations and delays. Unresolved problems with old friends require waves of soothing energy as the planet Uranus retrogrades. A need to release anything no longer healthy. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Now that Jupiter will enter Sagittarius for its 12-month run through that sign, the second week of this month brings happy positive changes. The Scorpio New Moon on the 8th inspires your creative assets. You and your blessed loved one will be happy together in your home nest. You need to attend to a travel plan now.

my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered: “The weather out there is terrible”. My loving wife of 20 years replied: “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that crap?” I still don't know to this day if she was joking, but I have stopped fishing. LEO July 23 – August 22 This week Uranus heads backwards into Aries, restarting old affairs involving travel, education and something to do with your in-laws. You are likely to burst back on the scene with startling opinions. You may find yourself in debates with those who make outrageous statements. That is the classical energy of unpredictable Uranus! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 With various planets shifting position in the universe and altering your daily affairs, you may reconsider various changes in your life that you have been contemplating. Planets that are retrograding during November make a healthy change of scenery for you, and could be just what the doctor ordered. The new Scorpio Moon has benefits. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The planet Uranus is going retrograde, which it does not do very often, so there is a need to bring up some attention in relationship issues that you thought were resolved. As there is a Scorpio New Moon this week this will be a reminder to practise sound financial management by setting up a budget. Jupiter brings better travel potential now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Feelings of warm intimacy can be enjoyed in the sanctity of your home. It’s a full-on romantic week as the New Moon accentuates your personal activities and inspires your dreams and hopes. Someone in your life may have you walking on air! If you are up for it, have a look around for a hot air balloon ride. Trust

your instincts. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This begins a marvelous month for you as the planet Jupiter enters your sign for a full 12 months. However, just in the first week, Uranus heads back into Aries stressing unresolved matters relating to travel, education and own beliefs. When your bountiful ruler Jupiter enters your happy optimistic sign it raises your confidence. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This should be a strange week for you as the New Moon in Scorpio brings very strong focus on your long-range financial goals, community involvements and networking. Since Jupiter flows now into Sagittarius you may gain an inkling of what blessings may come to you over the next 12 months. Mind your valuable resources! AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Your ruling planet Uranus now backtracks into the sign of Aries stirring talks and travels. Also, the New Moon in Scorpio, will inspire your ability to be noticed on your professional performance. When Jupiter enters Sagittarius by mid-month this will bring expanded social opportunities and beneficial new friendships. PISCES February 20 - March 20 With Neptune your ruling planet already retrograding in a bunch of other retro planets, you may find yourself befuddled or confused. Scorpio’s New Moon on the 8th brings emotional support for travel, learning something new or finding a new voice. There is a good chance that you will see an element of fate in your life.

Saturday morning I got up early, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour with the wind blowing 90 km/hour. I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio and discovered that the weather would be bad throughout the day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to

Dental Dental Excel.... Excel.... Dr David Marley Celebrating 45 years in Dental Practice Dr David Marley has over 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued.
Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in supporting good general health,” says Dr Marley. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all.
Implants
Orthodontics
David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.
Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.
Dentures
Bleaching
Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.
Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.
Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.
Cosmetic
Payment Plan
For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.
Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
