Guinness World Record in the bag

Sunshine Coast CEO Allan Lear has endured over 1,600 kilometres of tough conditions on his custom built electric bike to break a Guinness World Record. Mr Lear and his support team set out from his offices at Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland on Thursday, August 25. His record attempt set by Guinness officials required a minimum of 1,200 kilometres be travelled during a seven day continuous timeframe. By reaching Birdsville within the time limit, Allan has exceeded the distance by 429 kilometres achieving a total of 1,629 kilometres. The official record will be the Longest Distance Travelled by Electric Bicycle in 1 Week, and will be verified by Guinness officials in the UK in coming weeks by submission of evidence and records taken en route. “It was the opportunity of a lifetime, but I’m sore in places I didn’t even know existed,” says Mr Lear of his adventure. “We travelled some very rough terrain and had our share of challenges with flat tyres, bad weather, road trains, wild animals and met some interesting characters along the way. “The last few days were really tough. I’ve swallowed that much hot red dust, and the team’s food rations were running low so we were living on two minute noodles and canned tuna as we camped in our swags on the roadside.

They are probably some of the fittest, gutsiest, and most exceptional athletes in our country yet the men and women who compete in the Glasshouse Trail Runs are not household names. Without any fanfare, participants are ordinary people who just have a passion for ultra running.

Advancement Network (GMAN) and the Caboolture Road Runners. Four events are held each year: the Hares and Hounds, the Glasshouse 50, Flinders Tour and the Glasshouse 100. Two are based at Woodford and two at Beerburrum. In September each year the Glasshouse 100 includes the longest run of 100 miles (approximately 162 kilometres). This year’s Glasshouse 100 will be on Saturday, September, 10 and Sunday, September, 11. Three hundred people from around Australia and overseas will leave Beerburrum State School to compete in races of varying lengths including 100k, 50k, 30k 10k and of course the 100 miler. The courses wind through scenic trails, dirt roads and up and down mountains throughout the Glasshouse area. Brett Standring, 38, of Crookneck Retreat at Glass House Mountains is about to compete in his 7th event. Last year he ran in his first 100 mile race. He said it felt great to achieve one of his goals even though he had to push through the pain barrier. “It was pretty tough coming down Wild Horse Mountain after 120 k’s. Going up is fine, coming down it feels like someone is stabbing you in the legs every footstep,” he said. You would think once would be enough but Brett is about to take part in his 2nd 100 mile race. “My goal this year is to go under 24 hours because it took me 24 hours 52 (last time). I got a red ribbon and want the blue ribbon that says ‘100 miles in one day.’ I’m hoping that because I’ve done it before I’ll know what to expect this time,” he said.

The toughest part for Brett is trying to keep going when all he wants to do is quit. “To push through I usually put the iPod on, have something to eat, walk for a little bit and say, ‘I’ll be right in a minute’, and usually you are and you can keep going,” he said. For extra inspiration Brett doesn’t have to look any further than fellow Glasshouse Trails runner and Glass House Mountains local, Bill Thompson. Bill, 68, ran his first race in 1997. Last year he finished his 10th Glasshouse 100 mile event. That alone is an amazing feat but he has actually finished 23 races altogether. Only three times has he not completed a race. Reaching his tenth 100 mile at Glass House was “pretty good,” said Bill, “especially because my son, Simon came and did the run as well and finished.” While competing his 10th was a momentous occasion, it is when he completes his 12th that he will have reached the ‘pinnacle’ as that will

mean he has completed the ‘12’ mountains. So what drives a man to reach such extraordinary achievements? “That’s a good question,” said Bill. “Basically it’s a good excuse to get really fit; you can’t do a 100 mile run without getting pretty fit, so you’ve got to dedicate yourself for a month or so. There’s no easy way to do 100 miles that’s for sure.” Bill’s time is usually over 29 hours but he doesn’t aim for a PB (personal best). “I’m just happy to finish,” he said. Completing a race is more a mental battle, according to Bill. “A couple of times I’ve hit the wall through sheer exhaustion, but generally it’s more in your mind. You just feel a bit down and you can easily talk yourself into stopping so I always make up my mind that I’ll just go that bit further,” he said. One of things Bill enjoys is running through the night. “I prefer it at night, it’s really nice cruising along. We’ve got pretty good lights. It’s a really good feeling.” Bill has completed events overseas and highlights include the Hard Rock event in Colorado. “You have to climb more than Mount Everest in 48 hours.” Another highlight was the Tour de Mont Blanc in Paris. “There were 2,300 starters. You wouldn’t think there was that many crazy people on the planet, would you?” he asks. Both Brett and Bill agree it is the race organiser and the volunteers who make the Glasshouse Trail Runs so successful. “They cater for nearly every runner and it’s a well organised fun event. Ian Javes and the volunteers, they are the heart of the event, without those guys there wouldn’t be an event,” Brett said. For more information visit www.glasshousetrails. com.au

Cr Anna jumps the gun on McDonald’s decision By Lea Parkes

It would seem that Cr Anna unintentionally jumped the gun in advising GCNews that the application on the proposed location for McDonalds at Landsborough had been refused by Council planners, and that there had been no political interference in the decision. When the paper hit the streets last week the news came as a shock to the applicants, a spokesperson on behalf of McDonalds advised GCNews that the information in the story was incorrect. The spokesperson for McDonald’s said they have been advised by Council that the Development Application (DA) for the proposed new Landsborough restaurant has not been refused and a decision is expected at a Council Meeting later this month. “We have been advised that the DA is still under consideration and that Council has not made a decision on the application,” the spokesperson said. “It is possible that a decision may be made when the Council meets at the end of September. “Any claims contrary to this are incorrect and deeply disappointing, and disregard the Council’s formal town planning and review processes.” Cr Anna had contacted GCNews with the story and also provided the report from where the comments were taken as to why Council planners did not believe the application met the guidelines of the planning scheme, and so should be refused. The process that is followed by Council in relation to this type of development application is that the Council planners consider the application and make a recommendation on how Council should proceed. Their report then goes to a Councillor’s Discussion Forum – where Councillors can grill the staff on the decision and discuss their individual concerns. Following this Forum the Councillors have three days to decide whether or not they have a dissenting view and the report should go to a General Council Meeting for further discussion and where a formal vote is undertaken on the planner’s recommendation. Cr Anna said that general protocol is that if a Councillor from a Division other than where the application relates, wishes to have the decision brought to the General Meeting for debate, they would normally advise the Divisional Councillor that this is the action that they would be taking. “In this instance Cr Dwyer has decided not to follow this unwritten protocol to advise me of his decision. This is in spite of a thorough process being followed by the professional staff and a clear recommendation on the location’s unsuitability. “Knowing the level of interest in the decision and the considerable passion on both sides of the debate in the local community I made the assumption that it would be right and appropriate to inform the community as quickly as possible,” she said. The spokesperson for McDonald's said the proposed new Landsborough restaurant represented a long-term investment in the community, creating new jobs and stimulating growth. “McDonald’s restaurants are local businesses and provide numerous fulltime, part-time and casual employment opportunities, as well as nationally accredited training opportunities,” the spokesperson said. “The proposed new 24-hour restaurant will deliver between 80 and 120 jobs and, based on significant research within the area, we firmly believe that there is sufficient demand for our unique offering.”

As they leave to fulfil their dream of living in Tasmania, they will take with them fond memories of their time here. “We’ve been doing something we love doing and making a living out of it,” Rosemary said.

They will definitely miss their loyal customers. “We’ve been able to offer that personal touch and we’ve formed a lot of friendships from regular customers. Thank you very much for your loyalty and support over the years,” she added. Rosemary and Garry are leaving the business in the capable hands of new owner, Wayne Hodgskin. Wayne, whose love of plants was fostered by his grandmother, knows he has big gardening gloves to fill but is looking forward to the challenge. “They say ‘find a job you love you and you never work a day in your life’, so that’s what I’m most looking forward to, doing something I love,” he said. Wayne said he will continue to give customers the same friendly, personalised service they are used to. “The stock and the plants will still come from exactly the same place that Rosemary always preferred, so we will still have an extremely high standard of plants. We support and will continue support local growers as much as we can,” he said.

17th Local Debutante Ball Thanks to a wonderful hardworking group of volunteers the 17th annual Debutante Ball was held on Saturday, September 3. Thirty-two beautiful debutants and their partners attended the Ball, a culmination of months of preparation. They were presented to invited local dignitaries including Andrew Powell MP member for Glass House, Cr Anna Grosskreutz, Br John Stevenson who represented the Anglican Church and Principal Graham Trevenen. The event, which includes the presentation, dinner and dance, is organised by the Anglican Church, not only for young debutantes but in support of the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Fund. Helen Page, member of Debutante Ball committee, said the event was something any young woman from 16 years could be a part of.

“Traditionally it was girls ‘coming out’, about to go from childhood to adulthood and take their place in society. They learn skills they otherwise wouldn’t come across, they learn how to conduct themselves at a formal occasional, they learn ball room dancing, etiquette, working in a grown up sense as part of a group,” she said. Even though the Debutante Ball is mainly about the girls, their partners enjoy the event just as much. One mother wrote to the committee after her son attended a Debutante Ball. Her praise included: ‘I thought it was an outdated traditional that had strangely lived on in the Glasshouse region, I’m writing to tell you how wrong I was.’ ‘It was organised and executed with great skill, the value of the social capital associated with this

event should not be underestimated.’ ‘I am thankful that I live in a community that is prepared to put in effort to organise something like this for our young people.’ ‘The night of the ball was fantastic and forms one of my fondest memories of his teenage years.’ For a volunteer committee that has worked tirelessly for 17 years to make this event available for young people, letters like this inspire them to continue. “We really felt over the years that we’ve done something helpful and worthwhile for young people in the community. Those who take up the opportunity…we think they’ve gained quite a lot,” Helen said. GCNews will be publishing individual photos in coming weeks

Thank you to Beerwah Library Volunteers Last Thursday Beerwah Library had an afternoon tea to say ‘Thank You’ to the many computer volunteers for helping 100 members of the library community with technology assistance. This was made possible by the Friends of Beerwah Library (FOBL) applying for and being successful in obtaining a Sunshine Coast Council Grant to purchase six laptops and related accessories for the education of and use by the Beerwah Library Community. Volunteer computer tutor Marg Thompson said, “the thinking behind that was the need in the community, particular with regards to seniors, and other people who had not had the opportunity to work with computers.” The computers have been running hot ever since their arrival with use by various groups such as the Literacy Group who are working on a project for Adult Learners week, the GRAFX Group and the Family History Group who are undertaking research on the ‘Adopt A Digger’ Project.

On ‘Computer Thursday’ the Library staff conduct tutorials (groups of six at a time) on various topics including downloading Ebooks, introduction to computers, the internet, gmail and skype. In the afternoon the volunteer computer tutors do one-onone computer sessions. All the volunteers have had a lot of fun and enjoy seeing the faces of people when they understand how to do something new on the computer. “Because we enjoy working with computers and are aware that other people are less fortunate with regard to learning the knowledge, we all enjoy passing on what we have learnt,” Marg said.

From the Schools ‘Where’s Wally’ not lost in the crowd No one asked, ‘Where’s Wally’ at Glasshouse Country Christian College dress up day for Book Week on Friday. There were at least three Where’s Wallies, four Cats in Hats, quite a few Bindi Irwins, countless superheroes, scary villains, and princesses galore! Students celebrated the theme ‘One World, Many Stories’ for Book Week so there were plenty of costumes from countries such as India, Japan and Hawaii. The Preppies spent most of this term learning through nursery rhymes so there were lots of costumes along this theme. The three blind mice were as cute as the button nose on Mary’s little lamb.

The teachers also got into the spirit of things and dressed up in some of the zaniest costumes imaginable. For the Primary section, Wendy O’Donnell won the best dressed teacher as she stayed in her Jamaican Rastafarian character for the whole parade but there was strong competition from Robyn Buchanan who was the spitting image of Charlie Chaplain. After the Grand Parade, the students went on a treasure hunt to find books from around Australia and the world. Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia. It began 66 years ago with the aim of celebrating books and highlighting the importance of reading to children.

Landsborough Library Legends

As part of our Book Week celebrations at Landsborough State School from August 22 - 26 students were invited to dress up as a favourite character for the Book Week Focus for 2011 of ‘One World-Many Stories’. Students celebrated with a range of school, library and class activities. Class competitions were held based on the shortlisted books and the lucky winners received a $20.00 book voucher! Landsborough students showed by their enthusiastic response to the dress up day that they are Landsborough Library Legends and true book lovers.

As a successful Podiatrist, Carly completed a Bachelor of Health and Science (Podiatry) in 2001 and went on to work for an established podiatrist practice in Brisbane. In 2003 Carly embraced the local community and set up her own business in Landsborough. Carly originally worked out of the Landsborough Medical Centre one day a week until eventually moving into the Landsborough Physiotherapy Centre. Here, she hired our current receptionist and ‘familiar face of the front desk’ – Ruth Greenhill. A private podiatry clinic was later set up in the same centre which is now the main business office. Here, Carly continued to treat her many patients, and has enjoyed the lasting and personal relationships that she has built. Having recently given birth to her first child, Carly (momentarily) no longer has the pleasure of seeing those very locals that mean so much to her. However, she has the utmost confidence in the podiatrists who are continuing her work – Sarah Shipton and Kelli Kavney. Community Group Updates The Combined Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains Inc. The Queensland Cancer Council was the beneficiary of a Wine and Cheese evening on the verandah at Bankfoot House on August 20. This was the first occasion that a night function had been held at the historic house and, despite the threat of rain, the enthusiastic invitees were entertained by music from the pianola under the ambience of kero lamps and tea lights. Glasshouse Country Care provides a Day Centre which operates from Monday to Thursday for seniors and Fridays for younger adults with disabilities. There are activities, entertainment and outings for clients as well as the opportunity to meet and greet, catch up with friends and share their news. There are seven dedicated staff working with clients throughout the week. Last week in that freezing cold wind and pouring rain I had to go to the doctor, the chemist, the chiropractor and back to the butcher. Coming from the Coonowrin Road side, and having difficulty walking I had to go around the roundabout three times to visit all those places in that order – and it just became ridiculous. For crying out loud – this is Glass House Mountains! Not some place in inner-city Sydney or Melbourne. I’ve tried parking on Bruce Parade near that traffic island – sorry, ‘pedestrian refuge’, but had to do a five point turn to get back out of the parking spot as someone had come around the roundabout behind me and you cannot turn a station wagon in the space available with that ‘refuge’ narrowing the road that much. I then had to drive down the road to Turner Street to be legally able to turnaround to go back out of town. This was so ridiculous that I rang Council and complained. I was informed that the new works were set up to make it safe for pedestrians when the new IGA goes in. Well, that’s a nice thought, but what we have is totally unusable for anyone who has to drive it. Whether that is because of age, illness, disability, pouring rain, carrying babies or baby capsules, or like me, just plain injury. I suggested to him that making the Bruce Parade entrance to the IGA etc car park two-way again would make a huge difference. If they chopped a metre off the bottom of that ‘refuge’ that would allow us to turn without – as the nice man from Council suggested – driving all the way down the traffic divider and back up through the car parking area on the chemist side of Bruce Parade to get back to where I was but facing in the opposite direction.(?!!) I also mourn the loss of those lovely shade trees we had in the old parking island in the middle of the road. Now if someone’s driver has to wait for them in the middle of summer they’ll have to sit out there in the middle of that sterile expanse of concrete and bitumen which will probably be hitting around the 40 degree mark. Besides which – it no longer looks or feels ‘country’ or welcoming. Toni Hutchinson, Coonowrin Road

Closure of median strip - Bruce Highway

In response to Mr McArdle’s article dated August 24 and Anna Grosskreutz’s of August 31 in the Glasshouse Country News, the residents of Bells Creek Road and Roys Road sincerely hope that Main Roads closure of the median strips at the intersections of both roads and the Bruce Highway is indeed for a short term. The residents of both roads accept that due to the high volume of accidents and deaths that have occurred at both intersections, something had to be done. However, we object to the manner in which Main Roads, without any consultation with the residents, have made decisions which will affect the daily lives of residents. Main Roads, in proposing that road travellers use the Johnston Road exit have failed to consider that: - The residents of both Bells Creek and Roys Roads, especially the elderly, will have to travel approximately an extra 30 kilometres to Beerwah and/or Caloundra. - The extra travelling time for emergency vehicles, e.g. ambulance or The Rural Fire Brigade, could result in lives being lost. - There is only one exit road for residents, businesses, visitors, emergency vehicles to use e.g. in case of a bush fire. - For self help emergencies e.g. a snake bite, when an ambulance may not be necessary, residents would need quick access to medical facilities.

Local residents of both Roys and Bells Creek Road are aware that they may use a shorter access road via the Bruce Highway underpass at the Roys Road intersection. However, as this road is a one way dirt road full of pot holes, the sealing of this road would provide for a safer and quicker alternative route. In addition, traffic lights could be installed at the underpass to allow traffic to flow on, one way at a time. Residents on both roads are prepared, for a short time, to put up with the inconvenience of having to travel the extra kilometres to reach their destination, fork out extra expenses in fuel, vehicle wear and tear and having to pay higher costs for delivery of goods from outside our region. We have gathered many signatures in order to petition Main Roads to address our situation and we would like an undertaking that their solution to a problem which has been in existence for some 20 years would be just ‘short term’. We would also like Main Roads to define ‘short term’ for us as we all know from experience that a Government’s interpretation of ‘short term’ is too often very different to that of ordinary citizens. We hope that our concerns will be favourably considered by Main Roads and that a positive outcome can be reached for the benefit of all. D Jean Bells Creek Road

Shouldn’t be allowed

I recently came home at 7.00pm to find three hunting dogs in my yard attacking my sheep. As a result three have died from their injuries, one was pregnant with twins. As my adult son and I were trying to stop the dogs attacking my sheep they turned on my son and I truly thought they were going to attack him as well. What if my son was a toddler playing in the backyard? How would he possibly stand a chance against three vicious hunting dogs? Only two of the dogs were caught, one is still out there somewhere looking for its next 'easy' target. I understand that some people feel the need to own dogs like this, but I can't understand how they can be allowed to wander the streets. Something must be done to tighten control of these sorts of dogs so they are in safe and secure environments with monitoring to prevent more innocent animals or pets being slaughtered just because these dogs are bored or hungry. They should not be allowed in suburban areas where children live. How else can we avoid a tragedy from happening unnecessarily just because some people don't think it’s their responsibility to control their 'pets'? M Kitzelmann Glass House Mountains

RE: No McDonald in Landsborough

Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. supports the recommendations by Sunshine Coast Council planners to deny the McDonald’s proposed development in Landsborough. The development was inconsistent with the Caloundra City Plan. LACA Inc’s position has always been that a planning document has a life and time for community and developers to have input into the plan before the plan is put into place. As history shows, developers have frequently challenged plans even before the ink is dry. As the ‘new’ council’s first amalgamated plan is not yet in place, the developer of this site still has an opportunity to forward his proposal. When my children left home I found myself with extra time on my hands and started thinking about what I would enjoy doing – my husband suggested toastmasters. Although I was reluctant about the idea, I followed up his suggestion. Finally I made a call and was informed that Glasshouse Toastmasters were a small group of about 20, who were fun and that building self-esteem was their key focus. As well as teaching ourselves to be the best listener, because in communication today, we don’t always get heard. I agreed to go to the meeting that week knowing that there would be a welcoming face there to meet me when I got there. I nearly changed my mind at the last minute, due to the nerves getting the better of me, but once I got there and walked in the door I received the warmest greeting by the most down to earth group of people and received lots of mentoring through the whole meeting. Yes there was definitely laughter from the humorous speeches. But best of all, I was allowed to be an observer for two meetings before I was encouraged to become a member and start with very little steps to start participating in the simplest of tasks. The fortnightly meetings cost $5.00 which includes a most delectable morning tea. I thoroughly enjoy listening equally to male and female very quick witted speeches. Shadow Minister visits

Update – Peachester Road

It was great to be able to host the Shadow Small Business Minister Bruce Billson on a tour of the Fisher electorate that included a number of functions and visits to small businesses. Mr Billson and I attended a business breakfast in Maleny with 20 local guests, visited Maleny Dairies, hosted the Sunshine Coast Small Business Forum at Kawana and visited Pipeline Surf Co at Caloundra. We also visited the Caloundra RSL sub-branch, Fink Engineering at Kawana, Advanced Aquariums at Kunda Park, the IGA Express at Alexandra Headland and dropped in to the official opening of the Trilby Misso Lawyers call centre at Minyama. The visit gave Mr Billson and I a number of opportunities to exchange ideas and thoughts about the small business sector in the current economic and political climates.

Highway widening

Support has been strong for my petition calling for the Australian Government to widen the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. Anyone wishing to have a copy of the petition in their offices/outlet to collect signatures for this worthy cause can contact my office at 5444 4888. I have spoken in the Australian Parliament on the issue numerous times and also written to the relevant Minister and the Prime Minister about the issue. It is very important that we get upgrades to the highway to ensure it is as efficient and safe as possible and able to meet the demands of our growing population. I’m urging concerned Sunshine Coast residents to make an effort to add their names to the list so we can put pressure on the Government to address this vital need. The petitions are also available for signing at my office at the corner of Point Cartwright Drive and Nicklin Way, Buddina, and also at the office of Andrew Powell MP, 70 Maple Street, Maleny.

After my last update I had quite a lot of people contact me to express their frustration that the reconstruction of this road was to be delayed further with repair works only due to commence just before Christmas. I passed this feedback directly to the Minister for Main Roads and explained the desperate need to fast track repairs before the wet season. Unfortunately the Minister has replied saying due to the extensive damage and the technicalities of the repairs they can’t start works any sooner than already advised. Not what we were hoping for and I just ask for your ongoing patience and caution when using this road. If I have any more advice from the Department I will be sure to inform residents.

Visit to Glasshouse Mountains State School

These kids certainly know how to ask the tough questions! On the back of their recent trip to Parliament House, teacher Daniel White invited me to visit with the Year 7 students to have a chat with them about Parliament, legislation and about life as an MP. The students have been learning all about Government in their Year 7 studies and I am sure they even knew more than me on some topics! The kids also held a mock debate and I was honored to be the Speaker. Thanks to Mr White and the school for inviting me along.

Sometimes in life, it’s really easy to get bogged down in the rut of life that we sometimes forget what it was ever like to be smooth sailing. And sometimes if we’re not careful, we can get so caught up in our own conflicts that we just can’t remember what it was like before we ever started arguing. Maybe it’s because a couple’s love has grown cold, or sometimes because they’ve drifted apart, but for whatever reason, it’s easy to forget that once upon a time, they were once best friends. It’s times like these that it can be very, very easy to fixate on the really annoying and unpleasant things about your spouse that just really get under your skin. You know the scene: she is tempted to keep re-living the hurtful words that he spoke to her during a heated argument. He is like a broken record, repeating over and over his list of his frustrations with her. But these habits will only serve to dig you further into that rut and its only purpose is to keep your life miserable! As Paul writes so beautifully: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable– if anything is excellent or praiseworthy– think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)

Can you imagine what it would be like to control ourselves enough not to repeat the annoying traits, but to think of and speak up about the things in our partners that are ‘true, lovely and admirable’? Guys, what was it that moved your heart so much that you just couldn’t live without her and so you asked her to be yours and yours only until death do you part? Think about the things that are ‘excellent’ and are ‘praise-worthy’ about your husband or wife, your parents, your siblings, your friends. Not the things that you WANT or WISH they would or could be, but what IS true and right and lovely about them today...just as they are. This is a good thing to practice regardless of your marital status, sex or age! Be encouraged to take some time to think of all those wonderful things that you really appreciate and admire about those closest to you. You could go as far as to write down a list of all those things and even share them with your loved ones! Because everyone loves to be valued and wants to feel loved and appreciated! Beerwah Bulldogs Under 11 Blue’s and Under 15’s have played their way into the grand finals to be played at Kawana this weekend. Under 15’s get their chance to avenge their major semi final defeat by Stanley Rivers by Defeating Coolum 30-20 in the Preliminary Final at Nambour on Saturday. The Under 11 Blue’s have been in the top couple of teams in their division this season and will take on the Kawana Dolphins on Friday Night at Kawana - good luck to both teams. Great news for the Bulldogs with Reserve Captain Coach Wayne Morrisby being named the SCGRL Reserve Grade Player of Year at the SCGRL Presentation Night at Caloundra RSL on Friday Night. Wayne shared the award with Kawana’s Kurt McWalter. Gary Grice a long term Bulldog was also acknowledged for his service to rugby league on the Sunshine Coast by being inducted into the SCGRL Hall of Fame. Well done to both Wayne and Gary. Also very pleasing for the Club was that Neil Geritz (A Grade) and Luke Compton (U18) were in the top three in the Player of the Year Awards. In Round 9 of the Division 2 Caboolture District Ladies’ Bowls Association Pennant Competition last Wednesday, Glasshouse defeated Donnybrook 70/22. The return match and Final Round of the competition at Donnybrook on Friday resulted in our Ladies again winning 42/27. A great effort going through the entire 10 Round competition undefeated. Congratulations to our Glasshouse Country Ladies’ Pennant Side, Marleen Bertram, Noelle Dean, Monika Duff, Chris Freshwater, Millie Freshwater, Anne Howard, Di Hunt, Jan Lawson and Margaret Lehmann, on winning the flag for 2011. In the social triples games on Wednesday, Rae Farrell 25 def Rhylis Aitken 20, Noelle Dean 25 def Ann Sillence (visitor from Ipswich United) 16 and Rob Scullion 25 def John Aitken 13. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Brendan Freshwater and Jim Tatum with two wins and a margin of 19. The runners-up, being the ‘Winners of the Losers’, were Margaret and Gary Lehmann with the highest margin of +12 in game two. In the Men’s Pennant competition, Division 5 played Woodford (away) and won 51/35. Div 5 plays Caboolture Memorial (away) this Saturday. The season is over for our Division 2 and Division 4 sides. Unfortunately they both ended runners-up which was a commendable effort. Saturday afternoon Club selected pairs was won by Marleen Bertram and Kerry Capern with two wins and the highest score of 40 and the runnersup were Ann Sillence and Trevor Bertram, ‘Winners of the Losers’ with a highest score of 18 in game two. It was an enjoyable afternoon and bowlers, particularly new members are welcome next week, so please put your names down for a game. Coming Events:9.00am Wednesday, September 14, Jackpot Triples 6.00pm Wednesday, September 14, start of Business Bowls Spring Series.

The September meeting, held in the garden of Mike and Elaine Sinnamon was a rather wet and windy day, although the weather certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the members. Members agreed to support the Peachester State School in their bid to apply for a grant through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. This is a Federal Government aided fund which assists schools to set up their own garden and build or equip a kitchen where students will learn everything from planting to preparation and eating. Preparations for the Spring Flower Show are well underway. A reminder to bring along potted plants for decorating the hall, and cakes, biscuits and slices for the kitchen. The Spring Flower Show is on Friday and Saturday, September 9 and 10. Non-members are welcome to exhibit. The sections are: 1. Best in garden. 2. Collection of natives. 3. Small potted plant. 4. Orchid. 5. Fruit or vegetable. 6. Container of spring flowers. 7. Variegated foliage. 8. Kids - best decorated vegetable. Entry to competition is free and prizes are awarded by popular vote. Entries to be delivered between 4.00pm and 6.00pm Thursday, September 8, or before 8.00am Friday, September 9. Next meeting is on Thursday, September 15 at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens. Meet at the Peachester Hall 9.00am to carpool. There will be no competition bench. with Jade King Spring into the garden! Welcome to spring in the garden! Already we’ve been enjoying some delightfully warm days that beckon you outside to enjoy the veggie patch as well as providing that energy boost needed after the winter chill. However, we are not the only ones keenly getting out and about in this beautiful weather … once again I’ve been astonished to note that on the very first day of warmer temperatures, I witness the very beautiful fluttering of white wings belonging to the most unwelcome, yet most frequent visitor to my garden – the White Cabbage Butterfly. However, never fear, into my organic gardening schedule goes my natural caterpillar combat plan: Dipel every fortnight and catching butterflies for the kids outdoor games. Honestly, the kids love the game for at least the first month and the butterflies make good ‘Show and Tell’ items. In my constant attempt at trying to diversify what I can grow, I am once again trying a few new things including ‘Tondo di Piacenza’ zucchini, ‘Green Zebra’ tomatoes and ‘Easter Egg’ radish.

Last year at about this time I got stuck in and planted up big for my outdoor barbecues. I raved about plans to have red, yellow and pink cherry tomatoes, crispy cucumber, pickled beetroot, carrot sticks, juicy corn and capsicum on a bed of lettuce leaves, all straight from the backyard. However, Mother Nature had other plans and as most productive gardeners will know, the massive wet season both killed off so much of what I planted and dampened any barbecue plans. One thing I have learnt from gardening, however, is never to give up. What didn’t work last year can be a tremendous success the next, so I’m going to give it another go this year … so here’s to another big month of planting in the garden. I hope everyone enjoys their own fresh produce and gets the pleasure of sharing it with friends and family over the coming months. Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’.

Make a mound of compost/soil/manure and mulch well. Plant seedling or seed into a pocket filled with soil or seed raising mix.

Dig in lots of manure and Dynamic Lifter. Plant seeds direct. Block of 12 each Once seedlings are 15cm, sprinkle with blood and bone then month. mound the soil and mulch around the stem. Cut off side shoots or tillers to increase cob quality.

Carrot

Finely tilth soil and scatter approx ½ cup blood and bone per sq.m and lime to pH 6.5 - 7.5. Plant seeds direct.

Cucumber

Dig in manure and mound. Plant seed direct and mulch thickly 4 plants each around mound. Can trellis to increase air flow and reduce month. powdery mildew.

Beetroot

Dress soil with lime to pH 6.5-7.5 and apply a good handful of 4x1.5m rows blood and bone per sq.m. Seed can be soaked in warm water prior to direct planting to aid germination.

Lettuce

Dig in lots of manure and Dynamic Lifter. Plant seeds direct. Regular liquid feed.

Zucchini and Squash

Dig in manure and mound. Plant seed direct and mulch thickly 4 plants each around mound. month.

Beans

Adjust pH to 6.5-7.0. Potash can be applied sparingly to boost 20 plants each potassium levels. Mulch/hill around stems as they grow. month.

Rockmelon and Watermelon

Mound a mix of soil, manure and compost. Mulch heavily with Lucerne. Potash can be applied sparingly. Water regularly. Hand pollination greatly increases productivity.

Xantrostemon ‘Little Goldie’

Little Goldie is a dwarf form of the native Golden Penda. It grows to around 1m tall, forming a small, neat shrub with large bunches of fluffy golden flowers in spring and summer. New growth is dark red through the winter months. Plants available from Mountain View Garden Centre. Ph: 5439 0999
