his week marks the 10 year anniversary of the passing of Steve Irwin and I am sure I am not alone in remembering Steve and the impact his work had, not just on our local community, but across Australia and internationally. I can’t believe that it is a whole decade since that Monday, when the news came through, I guess having the Zoo based in our local area, and seeing the dynamic promotional bill boards with Steve’s familiar images on them each day means he still makes his
presence felt. And it is wonderful to see his family continuing his legacy and the great work that is being done by those involved with the Wildlife Warriors Worldwide. Regards,

The Fruit Growers Co-operative Association on Simpson Street was first established in 1936 and still runs from the original site with the current building moved on site in the 1970’s. An integral part of the traditional rural area community, the co-op has seen generations of customers come through its door. With over 800 members, the co-op still retains much of its rural focus however as times and more residential and allotment areas change, the co-op has adapted to suit its changing customer base with more D.I.Y and homemaker supplies offered, as well as continuing to focus on its core customer base of rural supplies. To mark the anniversary, renovations are currently underway to ensure a better use of space and to capitalise on the 2000 square metres of under roof space as well as the outdoor yards and service station which is also on co-op land. Recently appointed General Manager, Steve Williams brings over 35 years of executive retail management experience including 11 years with the Mitre 10 head office. Now based on the Coast, Steve was happy to take up the opportunity to lead the long running community based business that employs 30 locals. “I like the community feel of the business and the way it is integral to much of the local area
New general manager of the Coochin Creek Co-op, Steve Williams looks forward to another 80 years industry – and I’m very pleased to be a part of it, leading a strong team with years of expertise,” said Steve. The renovations will see a reinvesting in updated technology, new shelving and an introduction of more ranges to suit both residential and rural customers. Understanding the customer’s needs has always been important and as well as local staff serving locals, the co-op also offers a free agronomist service and dedicated field reps. There will be a grand unveiling of the renovated store scheduled for late October and Steve and the team look forward to refreshing and tidying the store in order to serve the community for another 80 years to come.

New smoke alarm legislation For nearly 20 years, Maleny local Adrian Butler has been fighting to have the world understand that we should not be relying on ionization smoke alarms in our homes and that photoelectric smoke alarms provide a quicker response and in-turn saves more lives.
“Research shows that photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms are the most effective on the market for alerting people to fires early.” Minister Byrne said a 10-year phased rollout of the legislation would allow ample time for everyone to have their alarms installed correctly.
Adrian, a former fire fighter, was responsible for co-founding the World Fire Safety Foundation (WFSF) in 2000 and was sitting in the gallery in Parliament House when the Queensland government passed their new smoke alarm legislation. He was pleased that the significant changes had been agreed to. The legislation specifies that every Queensland residence will need to be fitted with photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms, as well as hallways of residences. Fire and Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne said the legislation followed recommendations handed down after the 2011 Slacks Creek fatal house fire. “The absolute tragedy we saw at Slacks Creek where 11 people died is an incident we never want repeated and this legislation ensures people will be alerted to house fires as early as possible,” Minister Byrne said. “By having the alarms interconnected, it won’t matter which part of a house a fire might start in, the alarm closest to you will sound and if you are asleep, an alarm will sound in your room, even if the area is closed off to the rest of the house,” Minister Byrne said.
“Hard-wired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms will require a qualified electrician to conduct the installation and ensure the alarms are working as they should be,” he said. “There is an option to install photoelectric alarms with a 10-year lithium battery that have the capability to achieve interconnectedness wirelessly between alarms. This option may be more suitable for Queenslanders living in remote areas where attendance of an electrician could be difficult.” All houses being built or significantly renovated will need to comply with the smoke alarm legislation upon completion after January 1, 2017. All houses leased or sold will need to meet compliance after five years and all owneroccupied private dwellings will need to comply with the legislation within 10 years. Any smoke alarm being replaced after January 1, 2017 must be a photoelectric alarm. Minister Byrne said although some residents would have up to 10 years to install the alarms, everyone should take action to update their alarm system as soon as possible.

“QFES has long recommended photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms to be hard-wired into homes and the decision to mandate this is to be applauded. While Adrian is pleased with this outcome, the World Fire Safety Authority still has a long way to go on achieving their ultimate goal of having the use of having ionization smoke alarms banned across the world. Next week GC&M News will include an expanded story on the work of the World Fire Safety Authority.

Zonta function targets obstetric fistula Zonta Blackall Range will hold its third ‘Fistula morning tea’ at the Masonic Hall, Tamarind Street, Maleny on September 29 from 9.30am to 12.00noon, in aid of the club’s ongoing support for the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, established in 1974 by Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin and her late husband Dr Reg Hamlin. This year the fundraising event will also support Zonta International’s (ZI) project for eliminating fistula and reducing maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in Liberia. Since 2008 ZI has committed US $2,550,000 to United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) to this project. More than 1000 women and girls have been re-integrated into their communities after treatment. Zonta Blackall Range president Alison Huth said it was almost impossible for us to comprehend the problems women face with childbirth in a third world country. “A bad childbirth that results in a fistula is, without doubt, a life changing event and a woman will spend her life as an outcast from her family if it is not repaired. “As women we need to do everything we can to help train midwives and support medical staff to repair fistulas,” she said. The Zonta Club of Blackall Range, as part of Zonta’s commitment to advance the status of women locally and internationally, has contributed thousands of dollars over many years to this challenge, and the much appreciated morning tea event has been an effective method of achieving this result.

74 Simpson Street, Beerwah Coordinator Zontian Gillian Allen has been given a gold bangle set with an aquamarine for a raffle to boost funds. “This stunning modern style bangle is valued at $700.00 and we will draw it at the morning tea. We will also have ticket sellers in Maleny near IGA on three Saturday mornings in September leading up to September 29. “We will have a speaker on the fistula topic and Hamlin artifacts, like scarves, cards and copies of Catherine Hamlin’s fascinating book ‘The Hospital by the River’,” she said. “A speaker at our recent International Convention in Nice has said that equality for women has not yet been achieved in any country in the world. This is something Zonta International continues to challenge and the service committees of our local clubs throughout the world help to raise the money necessary to work towards this goal. Tickets for the function are $15.00, and raffle tickets ($2.00 for 10) are available from June Robson, by phoning 5499 9234 and Gillian Allen, 5499 9985.

Caravan Rally comes to Maleny By Sonia Clark Cec and Margaret Ward are the Southern Queensland & Northern NSW Delegate members of the Australasian Caravan Motorhome & Camping Club (ATCM & CC). Later this month the club will be hosting a caravan rally at the Maleny Showgrounds from September 19 - 28 with participants encouraged to support local businesses and enjoy the surrounding beauty of the Hinterland area. The national club (ATCM & CC) was established in 1999 and has around 1000 members Australia wide, there are branches in every State - with new members always welcome. The popular rallies average around 15-25 visiting caravans (though some gatherings have over 40 rigs in attendance) with both local and interstate members coming together to enjoy a mix of social activities, club events and opportunities to visit local tourist and scenic spots. During stays, the members are encouraged to support the local economy by purchasing their requirements within the selected town. At the clubs’ last rally held in Lowood, members spent over $18,000 locally and their in-house raffle raised $450.00 which was donated to a local charity. To assist members purchase locally, organisers Cec and Margaret have been busy approaching Maleny businesses to obtain additional support in terms of either retailer discounts or prize donations for the in-house raffles. The Maleny Rally in-house raffles will be supporting two charities; the Motor Neurone Disease Foundation as well as a local organisation. All monies raised will be divided between the causes.
To date, local business support has been excellent; with IGA Maleny, Colin James Fine Foods, Maleny Butchers and Maleny Golf Club all offering or donating either incentive discounts or a prize towards the in-house raffles. The rally has also received support from the Sunshine Coast Council, State Government and The Maleny Visitors Information Centre - who have all contributed to the ‘members welcome pack’. The organisers have spent the previous seven months gearing up for this rally and are very excited about the event coming together, as well as the chance to meet other travelling members and Hinterland locals. Quite a few excursions are planned for the 10-day event including outings, scenic drives, local entertainers performing and a number of sporting and recreational activities such as bare foot bowls and competitive golf. The club is always happy to accept new members and anyone is welcome to drop by the showgrounds during the event to say hello and find out more about the club. Membership involves a joining fee of $70.00 plus an annual subscription fee of $50.00, and is open to those who travel occasionally or are on the road full time – all types of rigs are welcome. To find out more visit https://www.atcmcc.org.au or contact Cec and Margaret on 0407 371 163.

New traffic lights for Bowen Road Intersection Motorists using the Steve Irwin Way and Bowen Road intersection in Glass House Mountains will now benefit from safer driving conditions, thanks to an upgrade. Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Minister Mark Bailey said the completion of the $2.4 million safety project was great news for road users and pedestrians. “A key part of the works was to install new traffic signals and a signalised crossing at the intersection, providing both vehicles and pedestrians with safer travel options,” Mr Bailey said. The Steve Irwin Way and Bowen Road intersection was identified for an upgrade due to the high crash rate recorded at this location. The work also included upgraded pedestrian crossing at Bowen Road, street lighting had also been improved. “New footpaths have been built, road widening has been carried out on Bowen Road and new drainage works installed,” he said. “I would like to thank the local community for their patience while this upgrade was underway.” Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the people of Glass House Mountains have never felt safer now the traffic lights are up and running at both the Reed Street and Bowen Road intersections on Steve Irwin Way. "This really is a great win for the people of Glass House. They deserve to be very proud of their efforts in fighting for these vital improvements and I'm so pleased I've been able to play my part as their local MP."

Local success at National boxing event Contributed by Steve Pitt Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) attended the National Golden Gloves over the weekend which commenced on Thursday running through to Sunday, and attracted over 400 athletes both nationally and internationally. HBCs Ethan Palmer contested the 36 kg Sub Junior final on Saturday in a bout against a boxer from NSW. Ethan started the bout well using his lead hand to good advantage. The second
round was even with both boys landing scoring shots. The third round saw Ethan rally to finish the bout with strong determination to be crowned Golden Gloves Champion. Dana Coolwell stepped up two divisions for this tournament campaigning at 56 kg. Dana drew New Zealand in a semi final on the Friday and controlled the bout well against his awkward opponent to go through to the final. Dana delivered another solid performance in the final against his much bigger opponent from Australia using his speed and power to great effect in the first round to put an eight count on his opponent. The second round saw Dana increase his lead before displaying good skills in the last round to become Golden Gloves Champion. We now look forward to our home tournament in Beerwah on September 17.
Dashing through the bush in a rusty Holden Ute! By Sonia Clark Locals will be able to look forward to an Aussie Christmas themed Community Christmas Carols this year and to help create that real Aussie feel they are putting the call out to the community to help find a suitable rusty Holden ute that can be put on display for the night of Saturday, December 17. The organisers are also really excited to let readers know they have the man who collaborated on the much loved children’s classic ‘Aussie Jingle Bells’ - Colin Buchanan as this year’s headline act! Colin Buchanan has had an incredibly diverse and successful career as a songwriter, children’s author, performer and television host spanning over 20 years. This is a massive draw card for the event, and to mark this year’s theme of ‘An Aussie Christmas’ as well as celebrating bringing out the man who wrote the classic line about ‘Dashing through the bush in a rusty Holden Ute’ – the organisers are running a special community competition. Community members who think they have a suitable rusty old Holden Ute are encouraged to
send through a photo of their own rustic treasure to be featured in the night. The winner will have their car showcased at the Community Carols Night as well as winning a prize donated by a local business. “We are just so incredibly pleased that Colin Buchanan has agreed to be our headlining act this year! Seeing as we’re bringing in the man himself who wrote Aussie Jingle Bells – it’s only appropriate that we have a rusty Holden Ute on site,” says event organiser Jenny Broderick. If you would like to enter, email a picture through to production@glasshousecommunitycarols. com. Entries will be featured on the Glasshouse Country Community Carols Facebook page as well as the GC&M News Facebook pages in the lead up to the event.

Contributed by Kylie Merola A large crowd gathered at Landsborough Hotel on Sunday, August 21, as the hotel played host to their fourth annual Charity Pig Races. Racing piglets, dressed in coloured sequinned jackets, were doing their bit for charity as they took to the track in a family friendly event. Adults and kids waited with anticipation for each knuckle-biting race to begin, hoping that their favourite pig would win. The tiny hooves, wet noses and curly tails of seven little piglets navigated their way through the circuit to the finish line. The first pig to put its snout in the trough of milk at the finish was declared the winner. Under the watchful eye of auctioneer and race caller Kevin Kiley, from Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs, the brightly-coloured participants had locals and visitors alike squealing with delight. A total of five races were held throughout the day. Other entertainment included live music, face painting and a petting zoo for children to play with the friendly animals. The little pigs' racing efforts raised funds for the Landsborough State School P&C Association, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Bee Gees Soccer Club and the Lions Club of Beerwah. More than $5,000 will be distributed amongst these local groups. These organisations wish to say a huge thank you to the amazing team at the Landsborough Hotel for their generous support.

Special guest for Wellsteeds
The legendary Chad Morgan was a surprise guest artist at the retirement send off party for Keith and Jenny Wellsteed of Peachester recently. Local residents and friends wanted a fitting way to celebrate a lifetime for Keith and 20 years for Jenny in the Peachester community. “Having Chad Morgan perform for Keith, Jenny and 70 guests was a real honour,” said local musician and longtime friend Kevin Wrayford. “Jenny and Keith have been dedicated and tireless community workers and will be very much missed.” At 83, Chad Morgan is still the ultimate entertainer. Guests enjoyed an hour of many of Chad’s classic country comedy songs. Chad is one of the last pioneers of country music in Australia and spent most of his performing life in Queensland country towns, working alongside other legends like Slim Dusty, John Williamson and Normie Rowe. Over many years, with hard work, determination and a great sense of humour, Keith and Jenny transformed an old 200-acre pine plantation block into the Candle Mountain B & B and a now well established macadamia farm and cattle grazing property. Keith has been an active member of the Rural Fire Brigade and Jenny is involved with many community activities including the CWA. With the thought of a few well-deserved extended holidays on the horizon, Keith and Jenny have decided to downsize and retire to Blackbutt. All of the local residents that were able to attend the farewell party, wished Keith and Jenny all the best for their well-earned retirement and reminded them they are always welcome in Peachester.

Make sure you plan to head along to Wittafest on Saturday, September 17 from 10.00am to 6.00pm at the Witta Sports and Rec Club. This community event will be one of good food, beer, traditional games, tours and live music with a focus on the era 1900 to 1929. As a Wittafest visitor, you will take part in an experience to remember all year long. Wittafest is quite different to other festivals in that it is fiercely local, authentic and real. It is not a typical expo with exhibitors and sales tents. It is free, family-friendly and fun; an opportunity for the community to see itself by gathering and retelling Witta stories. Artists performing include internationally acclaimed Trevor Hart and the Futurists, Kim Kirkman of Ten Tenors fame, Whyte and McKay, Strings and Keys and the Maleny Singers. The Revegetation bushwalks start at 10.30am and 2.30pm from the event gate and the cemetery tours are on at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 3.00pm and 4.00pm. Traditional games, talks with our surveyor and map specialist Bill Kitson and the period costume photo booth will be available until 5.00pm. Traditional food and great beers will be served all day to raise funds for the club. Steve Chaddock who established Wittafest in 2015 says: “we are the guardians of remarkable stories and fascinating photographic images from the past. “We re-make the past in the present by re-casting these stories in our modern day world, for the benefit of both old and new residents and visitors.” Wittafest is a project of the Witta Recreation Club, a not-for-profit community organisation, and is organised and delivered by a team of volunteers with strong support from local business and groups. Sublime beauty at Art on Cairncross
Mooloolah Kindy Open Day
The Glasshouse region is rarely as beautifully portrayed as in Johanna De Maine’s exquisite porcelain artworks. The area has been her home for the vast majority of her life and continues to provide great inspiration for her designs from bunya trees to butterflies and obviously the grandeur of the mountains themselves. Her new exhibition is aptly called ‘Sublime Beauty’. It features Johanna’s instantly recognisable lustres and golds, but also some wonderfully understated pieces which highlight her skills in throwing and carving too. The controlled nature of much of her work is contrasted by some wood-fired pots of elegant simplicity. Wood-firing takes place in a large outdoor kiln over three days, requiring constant supervision and observation day and night to maintain correct temperatures, so a team takes turn. There is still a degree of ‘happenstance’ in the results, but these have been extremely appealing. ‘Sublime Beauty’ describes this body of work and explains why Johanna’s ceramics are found in such notable collections as H.M. The Queen and in The Porcelain Museum in Jingdezhen, China.
C&K Mooloolah Community Kindergarten is opening its doors to the local community on Wednesday, September 7, to showcase the great work of the service in educating and caring for local children. The Open Day is on the corner of Bray and Kings Road, Mooloolah from 9.30am – 11.00am and will allow new families to come inside, meet educators and have a look around. The friendly staff will explain how the kindy runs on a day-to-day basis and there will be activities for the children throughout the morning. This is your opportunity to come in and have any questions you may have answered. To register for Open Week at C&K Mooloolah www.candk.asn.au/openweek For more information – mooloolah@candk.asn.au
Johanna De Maine with one of her porcelain artworks This is indeed the home of porcelain, steeped in history and tradition, and the curators select only the best from across the world. However, we are lucky enough to be able to see it all here in Maleny. The exhibition runs from September 3 to 25 at Art on Cairncross and is a leading event in the Horizon festival of art & culture taking place across all of the arts and across all of the Sunshine Coast. Small business owners
The trials of running a small business can be tough! When you’re the business manager, marketing person, sales department, book keeper … AND doing the actual work that produces income, it’s no wonder many small business owners are shining a bit less bright than we’re meant to. Discomfort, fatigue and brainfog are the norm, but are in no way normal! We often forget that we’re supposed to be vibrant, energetic and pain-free. So how do we get back to our normal state of vibrant health? First, we must correct the damage that has already occurred. A thorough chiropractic examination will find any existing problems and develop a plan to restore your body to its normal alignment and state of good health. Small business owners currently can receive an initial consultation for only $39.00* to find out if spinal misalignments and nerve irritation are the underlying cause of your problems. Then, we must learn how to stop recreating the same problems in the future. We’ll teach you how to minimise the main stressors that small business owners face … physical stressors like poor posture, prolonged computer use, repetitive stress and no time for exercise. The mental stresses of running a business add further tension to the spine and muscles. Add in a bit of chemical stresses like poor diet, dehydration and relying on caffeine and sugar for energy, and it’s no wonder we’re in such a poor state of health! So if you’re sick and tired of being less of the person you were meant to be, we’d be happy to help. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499. *Treatment is not included in $39.00 exam fee. If spinal problems are detected, standard adjustment fee is $50.00. Business feature

Transition to a more lifestyle friendly business model
Good vine bad vine Climbing and creeping plants add a wild and beautiful character to Australian forests. Some vines are so thick and vigorous that they need very large trees for hosts – an example being the impressive Monkey Rope, which always invokes images of Tarzan. Others, such as the Sweet Sarsaparilla, the Snake Vine, with its heart-shaped leaves, and the pretty Scrambling Lily (pictured) are light and spindly. The method of attachment is often used as a key to identification; some coil round trunks or branches, some have modified leaves or adventitious roots that form tendrils that grip the host plant, while others have raspy stems or thorns that attach to anything nearby. The leaves, flowers and fruit of climbing plants provide food for animals and birds. Tangles of vines provide excellent shelter and nesting sites for small birds, and even for ringtail possums. Some vines are vital for the survival of particular species. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, for example, relies on the vine of the same name as it is the only source of food for its caterpillars. Unfortunately, many garden escapees and discarded pot plants can grow into invasive vines that literally smother the native bush. Some exotic vines that have become invasive locally are Blue Morning Glory, Madeira Vine, Dutchman’s Pipe, Corky Passion, Cat's Claw and Silverleaf Desmodium (known also as Velcro Weed). Never throw old pot plants into the bush, and be careful when selecting climbers for your garden as they can easily be spread by wind, water and birds.

Business feature For the last 10 years, Wayne Drabsch has been working away managing his successful mining industry related business. He has been looking to retire from the industry – and with a solid mechanical background backed by years of experience running his own businesses, plans are underway to transition from his main income work to a more lifestyle friendly business model. As a sideline business, Wayne has invested in building up a mowing company which services the Mackay to Townsville area of Far North Queensland. Drawing on his technical and mechanical expertise, Wayne has tailored his business to uniquely offer customers a remote controlled all terrain mower service … perfect to access steep hills and uneven acreage settings. With his mining industry background and industrial equipment use and industry contacts, along with his interest in smart products, Wayne realised there was an additional income revenue opportunity to be had with the Transportable Shade Shed range that could be supplied and installed across Cannonvale and the Whitsundays area. Wayne came on board about eight weeks ago as a Transportable Shade Shed reseller. He is confident in the quality of the product and has already sold to customers looking for an adaptable, quick to install, wind rated shed that could cover a large variety of equipment storage and cover needs across a wide range of markets. “Becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller will give me that additional income that compliments my mowing company. It will allow me to complete my plans to retire from my mining business and have enough income between the two to not have to spend long periods away and spend more time at home,” explains Wayne. The local area has a large sports and recreational equipment market which includes four wheel drives, boats, caravans and motorbikes while the farming market is also a large industry. Farm implements and equipment across the sugar cane and mixed farming industries can take advantage of the wide clear internal span of the Transportable Shade Sheds range. Few other sheds can be installed in a matter of hours or are as suited to unlevelled pads as Transportable Shade Sheds. The cost savings for customers not requiring a level pad are also significant. With his new business venture, Wayne’s customers will have the additional advantage of dealing with an innovative, product and business savvy individual that delivers what customers require. “I’m happy to say that the sheds are very good products and I’ve received excellent support from the team,” says Wayne. If you know someone looking for a versatile and adaptable Transportable Shade Shed around the Far North Queensland, Cannonvale and the Whitsundays areas please contact Wayne via social media or on 0400 483 345. If you would like to find out more about the numerous opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

You Said It Health change
I have recently been diagnosed with celiac disease (go figure at age of 62). Anyway, grocery shopping has a whole new meaning for me, hence this letter. Our local IGA store in Maleny has made this process of acquiring gluten free products easier than I thought. They have tagged all products which have a gluten free label with a pink price tag. They also use other colour price tags for other dietary restrictions (which don’t affect me). Now I wish to say a public thank you to Rob Outridge and all the staff for this novel and very visual way of helping the general public when they do their shopping. This clearly demonstrates that this IGA store is in touch with its customers. So I have two other reasons for writing this article other than just congratulating Maleny IGA. Firstly, IGA will only place a yellow price tag on products that clearly have ‘gluten free’ written on the label. Now there are plenty of products on their shelves which are gluten free but don’t say so on the label. Wouldn’t it be great if manufacturers of these products would state the bloody obvious and then we would see many more products with a pink price tag? Secondly, as most people shop in other places from time to time, wouldn’t it be great if other food stores such as Woolworths, Coles, and Aldi did something similar? Matthew Rapkins Maleny

South East Queensland media often shows emotional scenes of injured animals being cared for. And we’re grateful for those who do this work. What we don’t acknowledge is that only a tiny fraction of the landscape is quality wildlife habitat. On the Maleny plateau about 1% of the original scrub remains. The best way to save our native critters is to have sizeable National Parks and State Forests with corridors between. While our governments generously fund revegetation, it is much more economical to protect what already exists. The Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) Legislation which Powell (GC&M News August 23), Mark McArdle and others proudly voted against, was designed to provide a little more habitat on free-hold land. The VMA Bill's main focus is large swathes of landscape where indiscriminate clearing occurs. Andrew has attacked the Bill, failing to give any details about its value, and its proper purpose. No mention of the value of habitat to tourist related industries. No reference to habitat for native species which assist with pest control. The Bill aims to protect high value habitat and riparian areas. There are many exemptions, including clearing of high value agricultural land. Yes, in most instances, landowners need to apply to clear, but that doesn’t mean they can’t clear. It is dishonest to claim that the Bill would force Glass House agriculture and economic progress ‘to a screaming halt’. Gillian Pechey Maleny

I recently met with a number of community groups and local authorities regarding concerns over vandalism occurring at the Beerwah Sports Grounds. You as the wider community can always help and be on the lookout for any suspicious behaviour, which can be reported to Police Link on 131 444 (for non-urgent items). The Beerwah Sportsground Committee and other users are investigating the possibility of CCTV with Sunshine Coast Council but in the meantime I’d like to hear from you about who you think is doing this and why is it occurring. Does the issue of ensuring our youth have meaningful activities to occupy themselves with in spare time need to be explored? I will report on updates as they come to hand.
Art Prize 2016 Forty incredible artworks have been unveiled at Caloundra Regional Gallery for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 finalist exhibition. The Art Prize is regarded as one of the nation’s leading regional art awards and I encourage everyone to visit the gallery to see the artworks for themselves. The exhibition is on display until Sunday, October 2.

School News Aussie Books Celebrated in Peachester
Contributed by Sally Joyce The magic of books and imagination came alive on parade as Peachester State School celebrated book week on Tuesday, August 30. The theme of Australia Story Country, was well adapted with many Aussie classics very recognisable in the parade of amazing home-made costumes, accompanied by their book of inspiration. Prizes for outstanding reading were given out to individuals as the school announced the National Book Week winners. Much fun was had by all, as students, teachers and even some parents, joined in the dress-up fun. What a great effort by so many students and parents.

Back to School for Prep Dads
On Tuesday, August 30, Prep children at Glasshouse Christian College went to school twice in one day! After going home at 3.00pm they came back at 6.30pm and brought their dads along for the special Prep Fathers’ Night. The Preppies were very excited to show their dads and grandads what they had been learning and to spend some special time with them. Some dads were taken straight to the interactive whiteboards, others were introduced to iPads while others sat on the floor playing with blocks and toys. Each dad had to make their own tie which doubled as a handy name badge. There was singing, a little bit of dancing and then a delicious supper to be enjoyed by all.

Sound has been Braden’s passion
Braden Pearce is a Year 12 student at Beerwah High and while he has been at high school he has already completed a Diploma in Sound Production at East Coast TAFE, by attending classes at the Nambour campus every Thursday. Since primary school Braden has been interested and involved in sound production and at high school Braden has been an active member of the tech team since Year 8. He has been involved in sound production, PA set up for full school parades, dance nights, musicals and battle of the bands, just to name a few. Braden has also completed work experience and volunteered at events outside of school such as the Big Pineapple Music Festival. Through his studies, Braden has taken live recordings of TAFE music students’ performances and using technical equipment such as a sound desk, Dante soundcard, ethernet cables and laptops, has taken these recordings to a studio to mix. He has also been able to broaden his knowledge in signal flow, dynamic abilities, frequencies and acoustics and has been assessed on his ability to perform these tasks as well as develop his leadership skills in heading a sound team, delegating jobs, de-briefing and implementing safety requirements. Braden’s completion of his qualification allows him to install sound systems and to teach others how to work in the sound industry. Braden has already been able to pass on some instruction in these skills to his brother Jordan and Braden will always help out at school or church functions. Sound production is a hobby that Braden loves and he is very pleased to have been able to successfully complete his diploma. Braden said even if he doesn’t end up working in the industry after he graduates, he will always be interested in sound production.
Peachester prep open days

Father’s Day
Nothing brings a smile to your face more than a room of dancing dads. Last week (August 30) dads and special guests were invited to embrace the Beerwah Kindy experience. With confidence and a smile, they wore a handmade crown, created a snowman out of playdough, hammered at the woodwork table and kicked up their heels to dance with their child. “We love watching the nurturing and playful way our dads and special guests join in the fun at our annual Fathers Night event,” Beerwah Kindergarten co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said. “With waggling knees and hands in the air, they joining in some of the children’s favourite dances.” All week the children had been busy creating special breakfast in bed packs ready for Father’s Day. At the close of the evening, the children reminded their dad’s, “no peeking until Sunday morning.”

Living - Music Beerwah Talent Search winners
By Sonia Clark Beerwah High Year 11 student Kody Thomas-Roby, accompanied by his older brother Myles Owen were judged this year’s first place winners in the Open section at the recent Beerwah Talent Search 2016. The Talent Quest was held as part of the recent Beerwah Charity Sports Day and had a prize kitty totalling $1,000 to be shared between the winners in three judged sections (Junior, Intermediate and Open). Kody and Myles performed a song titled ‘Call Me’ by Shinedown which was chosen for its appeal to both performers on an emotional level, and they were both very excited to have won, sharing the $350.00 cash prize. Kody, like his older brother before him, is part of the schools’ musical excellence program. He played piano and sang accompanied by Myles who also provided vocals and played guitar. Both young men have been inspired by music from a relatively young age - for example Myles who is now 21 has been playing guitar since he was 11. They entered the competition as Kody (who is 16) is particularly keen to build up his local performance experience. Both Myles and Kody are set to follow a musical future with Myles enrolled at Lismore University in a Bachelor of Music, and Kody who writes and performs his own compositions, is hoping to gain a place at the Conservatorium of Music when he completes his schooling. Music Today

Octogenarian musicians
Are you, or any of your acquaintances thinking “I’m too long in the tooth to take up something new”? In the case of an interest in music, that might see you joining your first choir, or taking up an instrument and hoping to perform with it. It might even just be dusting off that old drum kit that has sat in the garage for 40 years! If this fits someone you know then I have a good story for you, as there are some excellent musicians out there performing into their 80s and beyond! Alberta Hunter was born in 1895 in Memphis and left home at the age of 11 to try to find work as a singer! Her career began in a bordello but soon moved into clubs while she was still in her teens. She became known for her ability to improvise lyrics on the spot, wrote her own songs, cut many albums in the early days of recording, and toured Europe many times throughout her career. She composed for and sang in musicals and performed with artists the like of Louie Armstrong before retiring in 1957. Looking for a change she then lied about her age, invented a high school diploma, trained and then worked as a nurse for the next 20 years until she was forced to retire in 1977 aged 82. Still looking for things to do she went back to music as it was the only place she could find work and performed solidly for the next six years, cutting more albums and touring regularly until her death aged 89. A highlight towards the end of her life was a White House performance, an offer she had initially rejected as it was on her ‘day off’, so they had to amend their schedule to accommodate her! One of her last albums was Amtrak Blues. Do check out ‘My Handy Man’ online, it is a very raunchy song and although hers is the voice of a mature blues singer she appears well and truly at the height of her powers! At the Glasshouse Musos (an open mic session on Tuesdays at Beerwah Hotel) we recently enjoyed a first performance from a new duo, Carolyn and Kevin. They put together a very professional showing, which was made more impressive in knowing they were using microphones on stage for the first time, and that they are both in their 70s! (Well, Carolyn is just leaving her 60s and Kevin is just entering his 80th year, so they average in their 70s.) Other senior members of the community who are proudly gracing our stage in Beerwah at the moment include Tommy Doyle and Ian B MacLeod (a rockabilly master who made his first stage appearances in the late 50s on the Johnny O’Keefe Show and Bandstand!) Watch out for these fantastic artists!
Michael has a recording studio in Peachester and runs the Glasshouse Muso’s open mic sessions. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au www.gcnews.com.au

Our Country Kitchen
Walking into Landsborough’s newest café, ‘Our Country Kitchen’, you immediately know that you are going to be happily well fed. The décor is inviting with chequered tablecloths, red chairs outside and pops of red colour throughout the interior tying in the country kitchen theme nicely. Readers may know the new owners - sisters Selina and Chrissie Dittmann from their long running Landsborough market café and catering business. Wholesome home cooked meals are their speciality and when your food arrives it feels a little like having a good hearty meal made by your favourite aunt. As well as the sisters, mum Margaret helps out in the kitchen just to add to that authentic country cooking feel and brother David has also help set up the business. Currently the café is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.00am - 6.00pm. Already the Country Kitchen ladies have a few ideas to extend the dining experience; with licensing being finalised
and plans underway to offer an order ahead evening meal pick up service. Although only recently opened – already they have had the restaurant space booked out for a fully catered themed night – perfect for a pleasant gathering without the hassle of having to cook and clean up.
OPEN TUESDAY TO SUNDAY
8AM TO 6PM
The menu is well priced with vegetarian options available and a very affordable kid’s menu with items from $5.00 - $7.00. Seeing as it’s been a while since I’ve had a breakfast out - I ordered the Eggs Benedict with mushrooms and tomatoes instead of ham ($15.00), Lea decided on a lighter yet filling ‘Savory mince on toast’ $8.00 which came served in a cute serving dish in the café’s signature red colour. Our meals hit the spot - and I liked how there was just the right amount of hollandaise sauce on my Eggs Bene which was complimented well by the spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms. While we were there, the café filled up nicely as word has obviously already gotten out about the style, food and good old fashioned service that is sure to be popular with locals and visitors alike. The café is located at 8 Caloundra Street Landsborough. For more details call 5494 8884 or 0438 782 224, or find them on Facebook.

Colombian movie explores depths of Amazonian jungle and time The title ‘El Abrazo De La Serpente’ (Embrace of the Serpent) is based on an Amazonian myth of celestial beings descending to earth on a giant anaconda. The film explores the depths of the mighty river and its jungle over three decades, punctuated by two historic incursions of invading explorers, German Theodore Koch-Grunberg and American Richard Evans Schultes. The quest for the healing plant Yakruna is guided twice by the charismatic Shaman of the lost Cohiuno tribe, in a visual, sonic and surreal odyssey recalling Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo, Conrad’s novel ‘The Heart of Darkness, Garcia Marquez’ surreal story tellings and the movies ‘Apocalypse Now’ and ‘The Mission’. Described as “hypnotic, soulful and spiritual”, this Oscar-nominated film by Colombian Cio Guerra breaks new cinematic ground, melding ancient beliefs and desperate but destructive invasions in a universality that transcends time. This film screening is collaboration between Maleny Film Society, Caloundra Film Festival and the Horizon Festival and is on Saturday, September 10, at the Maleny Community Centre. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Spaghetti Junction with bar and tea/coffee stand available; screening at 7.15pm. Members of the MFS may pre-book on-line for their own individual tickets, or at the Maleny Information Centre, allowing two guest tickets per member. Peachester District Horticultural Society
M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month We care about our environment
Common Mat Rush
Juncus usitatus Common Mat Rush is one of the many species of native sedges and rushes growing in and along our waterways. These plants are often underutilised and poorly represented in our gardens. Hopefully with a bit more knowledge some of you may find a spot for these little beauties. The common mat rush grows to approximately 1.2m tall and it forms a bright green arching clump that looks equally beautiful in a feature pot on your patio or growing around your pond or dam. They have delicate flowers held above the plant in spring and summer. This plant is so adaptable it will thrive being planted in moist soil, in shallow water or in areas where it experiences dry periods. It is perfect for helping to stabilise your creek or dam banks and maintaining good water quality. Native frogs love hiding in these rushes and when the weather is suitable you will often hear them calling from within the clump. Dragonflies like to use them as a perch and birds make use of the cover provided by common mat rush also. If you do plant them in your dam then yabbies and waterfowl will enjoy a snack on the leaves. Next time you are at a nursery don’t overlook the Common Mat Rush or any of the other rushes, in the right spot these little green gems can shine.

by Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) Thank you to Jeff Bodley and Rob Morris for allowing us to share your lovely home and garden for our last meeting. Hearing all the birdsong was an added bonus. We had a very successful Friendship Day in July and have had some positive comments from visitors about our guest speakers, especially Kev Wrayford’s talk about the Rural Fire Brigade, as some city members had no idea that they are all volunteers. Jeff and Rob toured the Bundaberg region recently visiting some farms. Rob mentioned that mill mud is no longer available, but can be purchased in bags from some outlets as ‘Soilfix’. A comment was made that years ago it was possible to access chook manure, mushroom compost, bark chips, etc for free … not so today. Also, a warning about stable manure. Traces of arsenic can be found in it. Coral reminded us that our club will reach our 40th birthday in November next year. Viki Blaik told us of the shock of losing a shed and contents to a fire recently. Results of the competition bench for July. 1st Coral Beutel 25 points. 2nd Pam Innes 19 points. A big thank you to Rob for supplying the delicious soups for lunch. Please feel welcome to join us on Thursday, September 15, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall for our next meeting. From the churches Craig Moody - Glasshouse Country Anglican Church During the recent Olympics when I have seen the Olympians tapping their medals and national symbols and pointing to the Heavens, I have wondered what they are in fact praying. I might sound very critical here, and you might suggest that any display of Christian belief is good and that I should not be wondering what is going on in their hearts and minds. If so, I still stand by my discomfort. The problem as I see it is that people risk sending a message that God is on the side of the winner. If God is being thanked for the win, then everyone who lost must either wonder where God is for them, or even why God is interested in who won a rowing or table tennis (etc) event on this planet in 2016. The logical extension of thanking God for the win is concomitantly thanking God that everyone else lost. God loves us all, so does God not care GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

deeply and equally for all the runners and shooters and gymnasts etc!? This sends a funny message about God. Perhaps the Olympians are offering their efforts to God, giving God the best they have to offer; I hope so. The chest thumping however does not allay my fears. During the year the only sport that I have time to watch is Rugby, so the following comments are limited to that gentle game. The Pacific Islander teams, with a Methodist/missionary background are much given to prayer before and after games. The Dutch Reformed Church South Africans are similarly fervent in prayer before they run on. I have been told that prayers are offered for safe games, good sportsmanship and for players to give of their best. Now this makes sense to me. What especially pleases me is the Christian Pacific Islanders and sometimes South Africans gathering from both teams for a time of prayer after the game, giving thanks to God for the game and whatever else. In broader life, the thought that ‘God is on my side’ always leads to trouble. Look at World War 1? I much prefer the thought that we should turn it round and seek to be on God’s side.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES D0126
Contributed by Norm Taylor A team of six athletes from San Taekwondo contested the 2016 National Championships in Bendigo last weekend. This is our biggest Nationals team to date. Our junior and cadet fighters Reuben Tidy, Aaron Lerch, Joey Mortimer and Emma Hall all brought home bronze medals after close losses in their semi-final rounds. As expected the competition was very tough and all the juniors learned some valuable lessons from the high level competition. For our open black belt seniors, Kasia Bartnikowska dominated in her first match winning 12-6 and then suffered a heartbreaking loss in the semi-final to the eventual gold medallist after a malfunction in the scoring equipment caused several clear head kicks to not score. The equipment had to be reset but the scores were not altered and she eventually lost by one point. Late in the day, Cameron Taylor won all three of his fights against ACT, then two Victorian players, to claim the open black belt gold medal and has now been selected for the national team to represent Australia at the Oceanic titles in Fiji in November. This is the qualification to the 2017 world championships. San Taekwondo would like to thank our club

Just for Laughs Wedding ceremony
At a wedding ceremony the pastor asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace. The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying a child. She stood up and started walking slowly towards the pastor. Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride threw the bouquet and burst out crying. The groom's mother fainted. The Best men started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation. The pastor asked the woman, "can you tell us, why you came forward? What do you have to say?"
There was absolute silence in the church. The woman replied, "we can't hear at the back."
Wedding anniversary
John decides to buy his wife Emma a mobile phone for their wedding anniversary. John shows her and explains to her all the different and varied features on the phone. On Monday Emma goes shopping in the local supermarket. Her phone rings and it's her husband “Hi ya, Emma,” he says, “how do you like your new phone?” Emma replies, “I just love it, it's so small and light and your voice is clear as a bell, but there's one feature that I really don't understand though.” “What's that, Emma?” asks the husband. “How did you know that I was at K-Mart?” Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 07/09/2016 VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Normally you can be a skilful communicator, a very persuasive and convincing sales person. So with the large planet, Jupiter, moving across into the sign of Libra, let others know your thoughts and get a dialogue going. With Jupiter moving through your income sector it’s a good time to start putting money someplace, watching it grow. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This is your big news week, as Jupiter moves away from your cocoon zone of solitude and enters your first sector of good fortune, personal opportunities, happy feelings and lucky relationships. An old problem expresses itself again in a critical way, under Mercury being retrograde. A lot needs to be said in detail without intense emotions. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You should be feeling on top of the world, with the week ahead of you of magnetic and influential generous support. Expectations are on the mark and meet with constructive inspirations. As Jupiter moves into Libra, you find that you, or others, are both sure and unsure, and find that it’s like being on a seesaw at the local park now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The Moon starts off this week on your sign and that usually is a sure aspect of feeling good. You reap sentimental benefits from the past as Mercury spends a couple of weeks retrograde. However, with Jupiter entering Libra for a year ahead, brings opportunities to you through friends, social groups, relatives and communal causes.
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Jupiter launches a bright new year in your career cycle. There may be dreams coming to you on the international front that seemed impossible, but now, for the next three weeks, you can revise any opportunities for travel with benefits. This is a good time, however, that relationships have an exceptional level of loyalty and security. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With Mercury retrograde, your involvement in groups, friendships, and social outings may not get much traction over the next couple of weeks. Some appointments made are cancelled due to confusing logistics. With Jupiter entering Libra, for the next 12 months, that is wonderful for travel, adventure and broadening experiences. PISCES February 20 – March 20 There should be less monetary crisis in your life as Jupiter for the next 12 months is entering your income receiving sector for a one year stay. That should add to your benefit and resources. Combine your high ideals with hard work and you will have a lot to show for your efforts. Keep a healthy scepticism over offers that are too good to be true! ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week there are secrets and shared intimacies with feelings about a co-worker, job, task, or new relationships. You can make both relationship progress and professional empowerment. A good chance a business alliance supports you for promotion. Avoid secret personal ties at the office as they are pure fantasy, not real at all.
TAURUS April 21 – May 22 This is a good week for you to bring out scientism from your pockets as a safeguard against promises that have no basis in reality. So be aware of those around you who are unscrupulous or those who are just innocently misinformed. Jupiter begins a one year stay in your house of health and natural therapies. Opportunities come knocking. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 It’s all about relationships even with your elders, a parent or a guardian. You may be at the end of a long term affair. With Jupiter entering Libra for a one-year expansion there will be opportunities for new romances. It’s a very creative year ahead. Handle real life responsibilities as they happen, but keep your dreams alive. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Pay close attention to whatever you are doing, even when working on routine or familiar tasks, as under a Mercury retrograde period you can encounter unexpected pitfalls. If you have been careless in the past, the errors come back for you to pay attention, and subsequently correct. Jupiter into Libra brings expansion to your home now. LEO July 23 – August 22 There is going to be a big planetary shift with Jupiter entering Libra for the next 12 months, setting off your chart with optimism, opportunity, good will, good cheer, faith and good fortune! There may have been some ongoing financial restrictions. Just regroup around real life possibilities. Compliments are coming your way.
