T
he final countdown is now on with 10 days to go until the Beerwah Street Party to be held again in Simpson Street. The team of volunteers who have been working since last year’s event to bring it together have been hard at work for the last year creating another unforgettable event. Last year the event coincided with the completion of council’s major redevelopment of Simpson Street. They had put a significant amount of staff resources and budget behind it – this year the committee have had to put in the hard yards to get the support of local business sponsors to make it happen. So it has been great to see the number of businesses that have got behind them with the sponsorship dollars required for us, the community, to kick our heals up at a great fun family event. So a big thanks to them. And an even bigger thanks to the committee who have worked so hard so the rest of us can enjoy ourselves and to celebrate Beerwah in style. So don’t forget, Friday, October 16 from 5.00pm – 9.00pm Simpson Street will be the place to be. Regards,

Local News New mobile library service launched Sunshine Coast Council recently launched its new, state-of-the-art mobile library which has the latest technology for all the community to access. Mayor Mark Jamieson said at the launch of the fully accessible new mobile library, and the fresh new look for the existing mobile library, was an enhancement to library services aimed at improving access to information and technology for the region. “It is not every day you receive a new mobile library, especially one that has the latest technology including an Australian first - a self-service machine to make checking out your mobile library item quick and easy,” Mayor Jamieson said. “The new mobile library has been designed specifically to suit our region’s needs and has been built to cope with our rural roads. And you can’t miss the new vehicle given its vibrant purple colour. “On its 24 stops throughout the region, the mobile library attracts in excess of 5,000 people a month who, for one reason or another, are unable to travel to their closest library branch. “They are visited more than 1.5 million times per year by a membership base of 124,000 members.
Hinterland Accounting Services Phone 5439 0188
Fax 5439 0288
“On board the mobile service you will find technology such as iPads to access the many online resources provided free by being a library member. There are DVDs, CDs, magazines and an activity desk. “And children don’t miss out as there is a colourful kid’s corner to explore. There is even free WiFi. “Our mobile libraries are stocked with more than 12,000 items and of course if we do not have what our customer’s want we can reserve any item and bring them next time we are at their location. Now that’s a great service. “So look out for our new branded mobile libraries – they will definitely stand out when they make their way around the Coast and be talked about wherever they go.”

Thirty year Caloundra South Last Thursday, a significant milestone for the Sunshine Coast was marked with the launch of the (sometimes controversial) Caloundra South development off Bells Creek Road.

HOURS: Monday to Thursday 8.00am till 5.00pm Some Friday and Saturday mornings
The development has had a chequered past with rocky relationships between the developer – Stockland – and Council, environment groups, business groups and residents associations, including the revelation that the development would result in council ratepayers picking up the tab for a half a billion dollar infrastructure shortfall. However, with the ceremonial planting of a large Bunya Pine at the site, Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson,
Stockland CEO Mark Steinert and a number of other Stockland executives, (pictured below) all seemed rosy between State Government, Council and Stockland. The $5 billion residential development is the largest master planned community development under a single ownership in Australia, and will create over 20,000 new homes on the 2,360 hectare site, eventually becoming home to around 50,000 people over the next 30 years. Mayor Jamieson said the Sunshine Coast community could look forward to thousands of new jobs, the economic stimulation that the project would deliver. “For our community, however, the five years of intensive negotiations that have led up to today

have delivered a major win in the form of the Infrastructure Agreement that has been secured for the Caloundra South development area,” Mayor Jamieson said. Mayor Jamieson said Stockland had agreed to provide all infrastructures necessary to service the Caloundra South Priority Development Area, with this commitment representing a massive $1.3 billion investment. “Under the agreement, Stockland will provide a wide range of social and environmental infrastructure including the local road, cycle and pedestrian network and generous open space. “Stockland will provide land for community facilities, while contributing about $22 million

to the construction of clubhouses and the establishment of a Community Development Infrastructure Fund and Community Benefit Fund.” Stockland has chosen to call the development ‘Aura’ to reflect the bright, vibrant ‘city of colour’ it is planning to create. Stockland CEO Mark Steinert described the development as a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. Aura will occupy 24 square kilometres of land with the new development starting south of Lamerough Creek near Stockland's existing Bells Reach community and ultimately stretching west and south to meet the Bruce Highway at the new Bell's Creek Interchange. “We’re working hard to ensure Aura becomes a model for the highest standards of residential, commercial and mixed use development,” he said.
For those customers looking to purchase land immediately, there are 20 new home sites being available now with further sites being released later this month. More information can be found on www.stockland.com.au/bellsreach

Fans of the classic children’s book ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ can rejoice as bestselling children’s author Mem Fox and leading children’s illustrator and cartoonist Judy Horacek will be appearing together at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (17 Bicentenary Lane) for a special book launch event next Wednesday, October 14 at 10.30am. Presented by Rosetta Books, the best selling duo have reunited to bring an utterly delightful bedtime tale to life in their new book, ‘This & That’, and this will be their only Sunshine Coast appearance. Mem Fox has written over 40 much-loved books and is one of Australia’s greatest contributors to children’s literature. Her most well-known title, ‘Possum Magic’, has sold over 3 million copies locally and continues to be Australia’s bestselling picture book of all time. Parents and children alike will be familiar with Mem and Judy’s past collaboration; ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ which has stayed at the top of the bestsellers list for over 10 years and is a firm family favourite. “Bedtime is often a struggle for parents as their wide-eyed children procrastinate by asking for another story and another, or anything else that will delay lights out … but reading is an important part of the nightly bedtime ritual. It helps children wind down and relax at the end of the day, as well as developing a lifelong love of
Cohen Pinho and Lalita Hack with Pauline Davies from Rosetta Books reading,” says Mem. Parents and carers are invited to attend this very special free storytime event. Come along and listen to stories by Mem, ask some questions and enjoy the opportunity to meet and greet, and even get your books signed by the iconic duo. This will be a very popular event, so bookings are essential, and can be done via Rosetta Books. Contact 5435 2134 or email reading@rosettabooks.com.au. RSVP by Friday, October 9.

This has resulted in no changes to Division 5 (Maleny, Mooloolah and part of Landsborough) and a slight shift in the boundary of Division 1 (Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah, Peachester and part of Landsborough) in Little Mountain (the locality called ‘Creekwood’ estate). These changes will take effect for the upcoming council elections in March 2016. According to the Commission, the changes are likely to prevent the need for future boundary changes prior to the 2020 local government elections.

Local government boundary changes The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has completed a review of the Divisional boundaries within Sunshine Coast Council, resulting in some minor changes. The Local Government Change Commission – which is part of ECQ – has used population modelling supplied by the Sunshine Coast Council to realign Divisional boundaries to ensure that the 10 Divisions are equitable in their number of voters. From the assessment, the Commission has recommended that no new Divisions need yet to be created, but that some boundary realignments between Divisions are to be made.

Painting for pleasure celebrated
Contributed by Una Robinson September of 2015 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Landsborough Art Group which was formed by a group of like-minded artistic people. Many members have come and gone over the years but the painting for pleasure group continues on to inspire each member. From October 6, for the rest of the month, the group members wish to share their 20th celebratory exhibition of recent paintings with the public and one local artist will be exhibiting her very thought provoking inspirational acrylics for the very first time. There will be a quite diverse range of works which will include water colours, oils, 3D decoupage, acrylics, pastels and pencils. These will be exhibited at the Beerwah Library with many of the artworks available for purchase. We thank the library staff who will assist contacting any particular artist for those wishing to make any acquisition.

Aged care with heart in Beerwah McKenzie, the Australian family-owned aged care provider behind the Glasshouse Views aged care and retirement residence in Beerwah, has always set out to create ‘communities with heart’. Director, Mary-Ann McKenzie, who helped found McKenzie back in 1998, said that from the very beginning her family’s vision was to create warm, fun and welcoming communities, where people were not only cared for, but cared about. “Glasshouse Views remains true to our original vision, from the caring and talented people who work here, to the laughter and joy we share with our residents and their families every day,” she said. Mary-Ann said she understands that a move into aged care can seem like a daunting prospect for any older person and their family. “That’s why at Glasshouse Views we have dedicated Client Relations Manager Cathy Johnson to help guide families at every step, from initial enquiry, through to paperwork, moving in and beyond,” she said. “We listen hard and offer a range of personalised services, so if a resident’s needs should change, they can stay right here in familiar surrounds, supported by the people they know and love.” Glasshouse Views is located at 96-104 Peachester Road, Beerwah. Business Directory now open
Support the local Beerwah Lions Club and advertise your business in the 2016 edition of the Glasshouse Country Business Directory, now in its 21st edition. The directory provides a great way for the community to support small business by shopping locally. With over 8,000 copies delivered to households and businesses in Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Peachester, Landsborough and Mooloolah; applications for local businesses to advertise in the 2016 edition close on October 30. The directory is distributed to new residents as well as post offices, real estate offices and other selected outlets throughout the district. As well as providing a comprehensive local service directory, one of the key additional benefits is that all profits are distributed to local not-for-profit organisations and assist in Lions projects that invest in local community ventures. For businesses that advertise, they also receive a free listing on the updated website which has mobile screen optimisation to further boost their profile. The 2016 Lions Glasshouse Country Directory will also be available as a free App for iPhone and Android mobile devices. Bushfire preparation is your responsibility
The challenge for men to keep healthy
Contributed by Gavin Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator This week, as part of the ‘Prepare, Act, Survive’ bushfire message, we’ll look at the Survive part of getting ready for the bushfire season. If you choose to stay … Shelter in your house on the opposite side of approaching fire and maintain a clear means of escape. Continually monitor the conditions after the fire front has passed. Keep wearing your protective clothing and equipment, and only go outside once it is safe. Check for small spot fires and burning embers inside the roof space, under floor boards, under the house space, on the veranda and decks, on window ledges and door sills, in roof lines and gutters, in garden beds and mulch, in woodheaps, and on outdoor furniture. Monitor media outlets – radio, TV and internet – to gain vital information on the local conditions and situation. Ultimately, the safest place is to be away from the fire. Being involved in a fire may be one of the most traumatic experiences in your life. Survival and safety depends on the decisions you make before a fire event, during a fire event and after a fire event. Are you bushfire prepared? Remember … on days where the Fire Danger Rating is predicted to be extreme or catastrophic, leaving is the best option for you and your family’s survival. Just as a reminder, if you receive an emergency warning about a bushfire or other emergency, take notice – it could save your life. There are three types of alert messages to help
you make the right safety choices: Bushfire Advice Message – a fire has started. It is general information to keep you up to date. Bushfire Watch and Act Message – represents a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing, a fire is approaching; lives may come under threat. Take appropriate action. Bushfire Emergency Warning – is the highest level message advising of impending danger. It may be preceded with the Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS). To find out more about being bushfire prepared, contact a Community Volunteer Educator from one of the local Rural Fire Brigades. Rural fire Brigade V.C.E.’s Glass House Mountains Kirsty Levis – 0418 980 019, Steve Rook – 0407 572 930 Landsborough V.C.E. Kevin Sedgeman – 0429 940 991. Maleny V.C.E. Deb Lynde – 5492 8524
By Bob McLean Recently there was a ‘Health Forum’ convened by Mark McArdle in Caloundra. With a focus on diabetes and prostate cancer. The Prostate Cancer Support Group (PCSG) had an information stand along with Cancer Council (CC) and Diabetes Queensland (DQ). All of us were kept busy talking to people who were on different journeys. The staff from DQ calculated individual diabetes scores, to identify if those being assessed had Type 2 diabetes or not. The CC were providing information on melanoma and other cancers. The PCSG were chatting with men and their partners about their prostate cancer journey. When a person is dealing with any of these health conditions, and many others, there is one thing that is common, emotional trauma or ultimately, potential depression. Over recent months the Glasshouse Country PC Support Group has provided speakers addressing prostate cancer and other health issues that don't only affect men. At the next gathering on Wednesday, October 14, James Hill from Beyondblue will be the speaker. James is a presenter and advocate who will share his journey dealing with anxiety and depression and how he came out the other side. If you or anyone you know is dealing with emotional stress or depression, please take the time to come along to the Mary MacKillop Centre 160 Peachester Road, Beerwah at 5.30pm or contact Bob on 0427 606 240. Beyondblue and Prostate Cancer Foundation are supported by the Movember Foundation.

Elimbah School’s 100th Anniversary
Contributed by Elimbah resident, Ruth English A number of gentleman formed a school committee in 1914 and wrote to the government about a school in Elimbah. Some of the children went by train to Caboolture, which made it a very long day, some went by sulky to Moodlu and after the war, there was a small school on Twin View Road, near Wamuran, where there had been a Soldiers’ settlement. In May 1915 work started on an open air school (I heard the station masters goats caused havoc!) This school opened on November 8, 1915 with four pupils, on November 22 it closed, as the number of children attending, which had grown to eight were not enough to keep it going. On January 24, 1916 it reopened again with 15 pupils. At the end of the year the school changed from one teacher to two. It was probably in the 50’s when ours started, and in the 1960’s there were 30 - under 30 it was a one teacher school. The headmaster begged us to start our daughter, so he didn’t lose his assistant teacher. In 1977 pre-school commenced, another teacher and a teacher aid increased the staff to four. From its small beginnings 100 years ago, there are nearly 600 children attending. The head teacher no longer has to do everything, the way they had to in 1915; it’s no longer a small school. Children from small schools formed lifetime friendships, in most cases it was like a big family, and some have ancestors going back four or five generations. Those who have not visited in the last 20-30 years will get a surprise. The tennis courts have gone, numerous buildings are there now, there’s administration, offices, staff room etc, in another newer building, and the original school old ‘thunderbox’ toilet has gone. Elimbah School will celebrate their 100th anniversary on Saturday, October 17. Any past pupils who are interested and know of others who may wish to attend, please let them know the date, thank you. Not everyone has a computer, nor does everyone have Facebook.

Help protect our wildlife this Trauma Season
While many of us are embracing the warm change in seasons, staff at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital are preparing for their busiest, most confronting time of year; a time known as Trauma Season. As temperatures rise, so too do patient admissions for injuries caused by trauma. The warmer months of the year (namely August to February) see breeding wildlife on the move, making them more vulnerable to injury during the booming holiday season. Whether they’ve been hit by cars, attacked by domestic pets or orphaned and left to fend for themselves, our wildlife continue to suffer from preventable trauma injuries and it’s hurting our precious wildlife populations one accident at a time. The impact of Trauma Season is felt heavily throughout the Wildlife Hospital year after year - and this year is no exception! Kathy the koala is among the many animals treated recently at the Wildlife hospital, and while her lovable joey Lewis will grow up under her care thanks to the life saving work of our dedicated vets, nurses and hospital staff, other patients won’t be so lucky. Dr Amber Gillett, Senior Veterinarian and Coordinator of Veterinary Research at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital says cases such as these are not uncommon. “We see countless trauma cases at this time of year, and koalas and their marsupial mates are among the top affected,” said Dr Gillett. “The amount of treatment and care required to bring these animals back to good health is huge. We work around the clock to give the best possible care to each and every patient we see,” she added. Trauma is one of the leading causes of admission to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, second only to disease. However, unlike disease, it’s something we can all help to treat and prevent. Every donation helps Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital save the lives of those in need, while safe driving and knowing your pets’ whereabouts can help reduce the potential for trauma injuries occurring in the first place. Keeping your pets indoors or on a lead at night will ensure the safety of many hundreds of wildlife animals each year, as many of these preventable injuries occur at night.

Buy fresh, direct from the farm – taking Christmas orders now! It is good to know that you don’t have to travel far to buy quality, fresh meat and meat products direct from the farm at Barry Family Butchers, on Bury's Road, Beerwah. The Barry family are Beerwah born and bred and have been involved in farming and butchering for six generations. Robert and Narelle Barry decided it made more sense to sell direct to the public as well as being a wholesaler, so in 2009 they opened their farm store. Robert said customers can purchase fresher product, at better prices, which in turn leads to happy customers. He is keen to warn readers there looks to be a pork shortage this year, so please order your hams early for Christmas to avoid disappointment. These days more people are definitely taking an interest in where the food on their table comes from, and many more are keen to only purchase produce that is grown locally.
Selling from the farm gate means they can also sell in bulk, as well as by the kilo – whatever suits your business or individual needs. And for those special occasions, Barry Family Butchers can also offer spit roast hire – complete with the roast of your choice. They also have a huge range of small goods made on-site in their smokehouse, as well as ready to cook meal ideas which are great for when you are in a hurry. They even offer free delivery across the entire Glasshouse Country and Maleny News readership area (conditions apply). Located only 3km from town, getting there is easy. Take the Roys Road turn (at the lights), then head down Burys Road until you see their property on the right hand side, just past Gowinta Farms.

Environment Reservoir robots are about
Unitywater rolls out innovative technologies with reservoir robots and ‘Smart Balls’ that can detect leaks in pipework. CCTV-equipped mini submarines and computer-chipped balls flowing through water mains are among the innovative new technologies Unitywater is adopting to save money and improve its operations. Unitywater Asset Renewals The Submersible Remote Operated Vehicle Engineer Glenn Stock with (ROV) Robot, dubbed ‘Rove’ by Unitywater staff, is a 25 centimetre-wide remote controlled the CCTV ROV device fitted with a CCTV camera. From a vantage point underwater, it performs a condition assessment of reservoir interiors, checking for any structural or safety problems. It means there is no need to divert water supplies while reservoirs are taken off line for human divers to perform a confined-space entry. This improves safety, saves times and comes in at half the cost of a diver and associated stand-by rescue team. A total of 15 reservoirs and towers have been identified for ROV inspection in 2015/16 with work beginning on Mooloolah Valley this week (weather permitting). The SmartBall™ leak detection and condition assessment device is an aluminium alloy ball (about the size of a tennis ball) encased in a foam outer shell, which is disinfected and placed into a sewer or water main to free swim’ with the water flow for up to 12 hours at a time. The core ball contains instruments including an acoustic sensor and GPS tracker which can detect the sound of leaks to an accuracy of less than two metres, as well as gas pockets which can reduce the capacity and efficiency of the main. Unitywater recently used the SmartBall device through 8.9 kilometres of pipeline in the Landers Shute - Woombye region, one of the main water pipelines supplying the Sunshine Coast. The journey took three hours and 12 minutes.

Spring delights in the Wallum
Coastal wallum, or heathland, once dominated the coastal plains of the Sunshine Coast, but is now one of the most vulnerable of the 84 native ecosystems found locally. Much of this unique ecosystem has been lost to make way for urban development. Wallum soils are generally sandy, low in nutrients and often acidic. Despite this, wallum plant communities are rich in species diversity, being dominated by low shrubs, such as boronias (pictured), peas, hakeas, lilies, mat rushes and grass trees, interspersed with wattles, banksias and paperbarks. Coastal wallum is also known for its spectacular display of wildflowers in Spring. High levels of direct sunlight and periodic moisture stress have lead to a variety of adaptations in heathland species, including extensive root systems and small thick evergreen leaves, with waxy, reflective or hairy surfaces. The leaves contain oils which make them extremely inflammable, however many wallum plants are well adapted to fires, producing woody fruit to protect their seeds, heat-resistant bark, or root tubers that shoot after a fire. Wallum wildlife is also specifically adapted to the unusual conditions, and thus highly vulnerable when human activity alters the environment. Vulnerable species include several acid loving frogs, including wallum froglets and wallum sedge frogs, the ground parrot and a burrowing skink. Threats to coastal wallum include vegetation clearing and fragmentation, changes to water flow regimes, inappropriate fire regimes, grazing and introduced weeds. Even slight changes can have dire consequences for both flora and fauna of these unique environments.

School News Students impress with performances
Contributed by Debbie Ives Beerwah State School was alive with song and dance at the school concert on the last Tuesday of term. Performing both a matinee and evening show, parents, friends and students alike enjoyed two hours of wellchoreographed and well-rehearsed show. From the Year 6 boys performing a synchronized swimming routine of elaborate moves in imaginary water, a compilation of dance through the ages, a junior and senior choir performance and instrumental music students performing solos, the show was a delight to the senses! The students and teachers will enjoy a well-deserved rest in the holidays after all the time and effort of planning, costume and prop making, and performing on stage.
Gala Glass House Arts on show
Recently the creative students of the Glass House Mountains State School had their artwork featured in an exhibition along with other local artists at the school’s fundraising Art Gala event. The organisers were pleased with the number of visitors that attended the event and how much they loved viewing the artwork and admired the quality of it. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on their side, the rain arrived and stalls had to be moved under cover on the day, but not surprisingly it didn’t stop people spending. The ukulele and drumming bands were very popular and rumour has it that music teacher Mr Roy's singing definitely impressed. The organisers would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the school by way of donations or attending.
Is your pregnancy not as glowing as you imagined? We’ve all heard of the ‘pregnancy glow’. It’s that magical time when expectant mothers are preparing to bring a new life into the world. Unfortunately, not all women feel so magical during this time. Back pain, tingling down the legs, reflux, and soreness between the shoulders are all things that regularly accompany the added kilos, leaving mothers-to-be feeling not very ‘glowy’. This can further lead to depression, low energy, and increased stress. Fortunately, there is a solution! The first part of the good news is that there is an explanation for these symptoms. The technical term is ‘Spinal Subluxation’. It means there is part of your spine or pelvis that is partially or fully dysfunctional because your vertebrae are in an improper position. The second part of the good news is that once you learn about these subluxations – you then have a path to feeling better. A good chiropractor works with you to ‘unlock’ the vertebra that is out of alignment – and once it is unlocked your own body will move things back to where they should be. Dr Braxton, from Adjust to Life Chiropractic in the Turner Park Shopping Centre, Beerwah, has undergone extensive post graduate training in pregnancy and pediatric care and is an ICPA Webster Technique certified chiropractor. Call us today on 5494 0499 to find out if we can get help you get your glow!

Mooloolah Students gear up for Art Show and Fair!
Students at Mooloolah State School from Prep to Year 6 are working hard to prepare for the upcoming Art Show and Fair on October 23 and 25. Every week they are working tirelessly to make sure their art work is ready to be displayed! They are producing all sorts of mediums including canvases, textures, paper craft, clay, and recycled materials, etc. The buzz in the air is amazing. They are proud of their achievements and rightly so. The art work is amazing and will be showcased for all to see alongside established Artists’ work at the art fair. It has been a whole school effort to come together and collaborate on how they will showcase their work. Teachers, parents and community members are volunteering their time to start organising how the students work will be displayed. The students are not only concentrating on their own work but are also painting banners and posters for the event itself. Well done to all students! The hard work is almost done and you will be able to enjoy the event and see your wonderful works on display! If you would like to see their wonderful artistic expression on show, come and support the school and the students at the Art Show and Art Fair.
School holds writers festival
The recent Writers Festival at Caboolture Montessori School (CMS) coincided with the Brisbane Writers Festival with which the children have also had experience. School principal Yvonne Rinaldi said the school regularly participates in such state-wide events so it was timely to have the students host their own. CMS teacher Bill Park Weir, who coordinated the mini-festival said, by providing their own series of workshops on campus, across three classes, students had the opportunity for verbal presentations. “They read from their own written work presenting to teachers, parents and other students,” he said. “Following such they also took questions from their audience which included feedback and constructive criticism. “With writing being a major feature of students’ work this year, many have really embraced this, and with the positive results, we hope to repeat the event on a regular basis,” he said.

Kirstee says thank you
After buying into the Fitness Matters franchise five years ago and successfully establishing clubs at Beerwah and Mooloolah, Kirstee Copely has decided to pass the reigns over to a new owner, Taz Calandruccio. Kirstee has always had a keen personal interest in health and the benefits of maintaining fitness. In 2010, she set up the gym at Beerwah in response to the community need for a friendly and accessible fitness club that would suit everybody. In 2012, she established the business at Mooloolah and in May 2014, the clubs rebranded to the Maximise Health and Fitness name. With the rapid growth both here and interstate of her family run construction industry business, Kirstee has decided to redirect her energy. She is being pulled back into a management position and will be overseeing the franchise operations of the family business which has been operating for the last 14 years. Kirstee would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported her during the last five years, including the amazingly dedicated team and club members. She has had a lot of fun along the way and has met some wonderful people. She especially would like to thank all the members who have shared their life goals with her and feels privilege to have developed close friendships with many. “I’ve greatly appreciated all the support and commitment from the local community, staff and members. It has been a great and fulfilling journey and an absolute honour to have witnessed people achieve their fitness goals,” she said. Kirstee hands over the reins to new owner Taz
Showcasing our local animals A couple of our feathered and hooved locals were treated to a visit to the beach last week, when the Channel 9’s ‘Today Show’ was televised from Moffat Beach to showcase some of our local talent and businesses. Rocky the McCaw from Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World got up close and personal with Lisa Wilkinson and the beautiful Guernsey girls Millie and Kaylee from Maleny Dairies also featured in the show, making their first television debut, (while they may not have been on their best behaviour they definitely left an impression on the show’s hosts).

Generous community spirit
Everything grows on the Blackall Range and the Maleny Garden Club is no exception. Not only have they grown in numbers - to the point of having a waiting list to join - but also in their generosity. I was privileged to attend the Club’s recent AGM at the Old Witta School and I was floored at the number of local organisations that were supported through the fundraising efforts of the Maleny Garden Club, primarily through their increasingly successful Gardening on the Edge. These included the local SES as well as theMaleny and Conondale Rural Fire Brigades, the Chaplains at the local state and high schools, the Maleny Menshed, Blackall Range Care, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Maleny Ambulance Service and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre are financially supported by this wonderful organisation. To the members of the Maleny Garden Club, my thanks! May your green thumbs remain green and your generous spirits remain ever generous. Andrew Powell Member for Glass House
Glasshouse considered remote for internet access
New Roys Road overpass
NBN have launched one of their new satellites which are supposed to bring better broadband internet to remote areas. The internet is pretty rubbish in the outback, with many remote living Australians complaining about no service, slow speed and the download limits. So these new satellites are supposed to be solving their problems … but the real problem will be that because of the limited fibre network coverage and the patchy wireless network through the microwave towers NBN want to put up about the place, many locals not living in towns around the Glass House Mountains will not be getting either super-fast fibre or slightly fast wireless – they’ll be considered as living in a ‘remote’ area and will be offered a satellite service only. Now this might be ok if not many others will be connecting to the satellites, but unfortunately they’ll be hundreds of thousands of extra people around Australia forced to have satellite internet connections – meaning that we’ll back to the stone-ages compared to our coastal cousins. Good luck trying to find out from NBN if you will be getting wireless microwave internet … they won’t say who’s getting what – probably because they don’t know themselves. B. Green Glasshouse Mountains
Beerwah resident John Jennings tried the new connection road and was most impressed. “I have used Roys Road to access the Bruce Highway from time to time in recent years and watched, at a distance, work on the new link and the overpass. “When the barriers came down I was quick to try it out and I thought the road work and sweeping bend through the pine plantations very impressive,” he said. “In the future, this Roys Road link to the Bruce Highway and through to Caloundra, cleverly tied in with the well-used rail overpass at Beerwah, will surely become one of the most significant road engineering developments in the Sunshine Coast area. Roys Road is no longer a quiet bush track used by a few brave motorists.”

Top reasons why home building remains strong Home building has been one of the standout performers of the national economy over recent months and there is no shortage of reasons why home building is thriving at the moment – here are just three of them. Investment activity is especially high Investors play a key role in the overall success of the property sector. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) believes it is investors who are showing the greatest appetite for new homes, and it’s leading to an upswing in activity. HIA Economist Diwa Hopkins noted that investors are “contributing a

larger share of new housing supply than has historically been the case”. This has occurred despite attempts to kerb investment loans, showing many investors simply won’t be deterred.
Apartment building emerged as the strongest performer, suggesting homebuyers throughout the nation are still showing a preference for high-density living.
Leading indicators suggest rising construction levels There are many indicators of construction activity with one most prominent being the Australian Industry Group/HIA Australian Performance of Construction Index (PCI). The latest release showed the PCI increased 6.7 points in August to reach a reading of 53.8.
Plenty of work in the pipeline Master Builders Australia commented on official data, which showed approvals for new buildings were up 4.2 per cent in July. Chief Economist Peter Jones noted 223,000 dwellings had been approved during the 12 months to July, so the sector has plenty to keep it going, at least for the time being.

Who do you call when you need to know something about your town? Do you really admire a young person who is excelling in some way? Are there people you know who help others? It is time to recognise them. The 2015 Caloundra Electorate Community Award nominations are now open. This is the time to nominate the quiet achievers, those people who keep our community connected. The categories this year are Community Volunteer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Business Achiever of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Young Achiever of the Year. In 2014 we had a large volume of nominees who were all outstanding in their category. Every year my office participates in a number of collection drives for different charities including the Pyjama Foundation, Christmas appeal and this year we did the Shoe Box Initiative (cosmetics and toiletries for rural women). We are always inundated with donations which just shows the Caloundra spirit is strong, giving and supportive, to anyone in need. Nominating someone is a simple process, you can call my office on 5329 4100 and Lisa, Michelle or Cherie will happily assist you. The person you nominate does not have to live in the Electorate, however their work or acts of kindness must benefit the people who do live in the Electorate. We all know someone we could nominate, it is the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes all the time, they don’t do it for the recognition, they don’t do it because they have to, they do it because they love to help and they believe in the cause. They are the quiet achievers and now is the time to show them how much they are appreciated.

Health Check Introducing Emily
Sleep apnoea: are you at risk?
Contributed by Landsborough Health & Wellness Centre Our amazing Naturopath, Emily is also a qualified Live Blood Analyst. This specialised technique permits her to gain a comprehensive insight into your health and well-being by viewing a small drop of blood under a microscope. This allows her to detect and monitor changes in your health through a single procedure. Your blood is a fluid tissue that can change under the influence of many factors. A good qualified Live Blood Analyst can see how effectively you are nourished by viewing and interpreting the size and shape of your red blood cells. Your health is reflected through your blood. Emily can see where deficiencies may be present and professionally work to bring you back to balance through the use of nutritional or herbal supplementation. There are many things that can be seen quickly and specifically (e.g. digestive health issues) through viewing the red blood cells which allows Emily to understand your case more effectively. In a comprehensive live blood analysis consultation Emily will interpret the activity of your immune system. This is done through analysing different types of white blood cells and their size and activity. This can be enormously useful to determine allergies, viral or bacterial infection and inflammation.

Contributed by McCloy Dental Sleep apnoea is the new ‘big thing’ in medicine. Everywhere you look someone is being diagnosed with it. It has been blamed for traffic and shipping accidents, marriage break-ups and lots more. Snoring and sleep apneoa are not necessarily coincidental. People who are at risk include those with: BMI over 35, history of congestive cardiac failure, atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure that is not responsive to medication, type 2 diabetes, nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias, history of stroke, pulmonary hypertension, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, a retruded jaw, craniofacial syndromes associated with a retruded jaw or large tongue e.g. down syndrome, apert syndrome, or family history of obstructive apnoea. At McCloy Dental we have the experience to understand how all of these factors work together to affect the treatment that you should receive, and what will work for you. A mandibular advancement device is a first line treatment for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, and in severe apnoea if you are unable to tolerate CPAP, or need it for times when CPAP is not appropriate or possible, such as camping trips. A mandibular advancement device is smaller and for most, more easily worn and tolerated. Call McCloy Dental to be assessed for something that may be life-changing.

Having a dog can help your heart literally with Braxton Turnage Dog lovers know how much warmth and comfort their canine companions add to their lives. But they might not know that a growing body of evidence suggests that having a dog may help improve heart health. Pet ownership, especially having a dog, is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. This does not mean that there is a clear cause and effect relationship between the two, but it does mean that pet ownership can be a reasonable part of an overall strategy to lower the risk of heart disease. Several studies have shown that dog owners have lower blood pressure than non-owners — probably because their pets have a calming effect on them and because dog owners tend to get more exercise. The power of touch also appears to be an important part of this 'pet effect.' Several studies show that blood pressure goes down when a person pets a dog. There is some evidence that owning a dog is associated with lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. A large study focusing on this question found that dog owners had lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels than non-owners, and that these differences weren't explainable by diet, smoking, or body mass index (BMI). However, the reason for these differences is still not clear. Dogs' calming effect on humans also appears to help people handle stress. For example, some research suggests that people with dogs experience less cardiovascular reactivity during times of stress. That means that their heart rate and blood pressure go up less and return to normal more quickly, dampening the effects of stress on the body. If you own a dog, or are thinking about it, the potential benefits for your heart health are a nice plus. However, pets should not be adopted for the primary purpose of reducing heart disease risk. And definitely don't add a dog to your life if you're not ready or able to take care of one, including making sure it gets enough exercise. www.gcnews.com.au
Living - Music Music Today
with Dr Michael Whiticker
Performing opportunity for musicians It is a dream of many musicians to make their living from playing music. A small percentage do, but most work in a totally unrelated field or teach, administrate or work in music retail as a means of getting by and perform on the side for pleasure. Thirty years ago it was a very different story with a lot of performing opportunities and most musicians able to find paying work on a regular basis. In this short article I won’t look at why that is, but I will consider what we can do about today’s lack of playing prospects. Some who were around in the 70s and 80s find that grumbling about the ‘good old days’ helps, perhaps hoping that top venues will miraculously appear. Why not instead accept that things are different today and consider how we can improve, even better the situation for ourselves? For example a common complaint back then was that we had to play middle of the road ‘covers’ if we wanted to work regularly. So what if we had a setting today where we played what we wanted and there was a listening audience for it? What if we just played originals, blues or folk and we didn’t have someone in the audience yelling out “play something we know”? An approach we took to creating decent performance opportunities was to start events that encouraged people to come and perform and to network with like-minded individuals. By featuring a respectable sound system with mix engineer, the musician could sound at their best, play to an appreciative audience, and not have to carry a lot of gear in and out. Plus, by getting up and playing in public they would be enjoyed by people and perhaps they could sell CDs or gain paying work at other venues following these appearances. Another positive aspect of such events is that they encourage ‘newbies’ to get up and have a go. Audiences are winners too as they hear a wide range of music (often 12 different acts in a session), a wide range of styles and ages (from school age to senior), and old friends get up to play along with newcomers. It really can be a fun night for music lovers. Such ‘open mic’ sessions are popping up all over the place, so if a musician wants to play at a different one every night of the week, they can! Do check them out and in the process have a very musical month!
Michael teaches music students from his home studio and runs the Glasshouse Muso’s Club. If you would like to find out more contact him on M: 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

An advantage of live recordings is that they can often capture an energy and sound that can be hard to replicate in a studio setting and that can then be professionally mixed in the studio post gig. As a passionate music lover, it is vitally important to Mark that artists that record at his studio are able to have the essence of their music translated effectively to the listener in the finished product. A great deal of effort goes into getting the pre production arrangement, sound and feel just right. “If I can capture the emotion of the music - then my work is done,” said Mark. To date Mark has recorded over 50 albums for local artists. He offers studios that are open, naturally light filled and comfortable, in the hope that a more creative flow can be achieved in pleasant settings.

Great eats and treats to find locally!
Kwerky Cafe This month I popped into Kwerky Cafe at Beerwah which sits right in the middle of Simpson Street. As the name suggests, the decor is a little bit quirky with the ceiling painted like a floor, bright pops of colour everywhere, and interesting touches throughout. It’s a lovely uplifting place and when you walk in you can’t help but smile. My first port of call was a strong coffee. It was excellent! Owners Joey and Ken Bannister have got the blend just right and it was smooth and strong without being bitter. The cafe serves its own speciality blend of locally roasted beans and customers can have their caffeine fix tailored to suit their tastes. Breakfast is served all day and the options are well priced and presented. Customers can
choose from the filling Big Breakfast at $12.00 and yummy favourite Eggs Benedict for $10.50 (served on sour dough with a choice of ham or bacon), to decadent sweet options like waffles served with gelato and maple syrup or pancakes with either cream and maple syrup or lemon and sugar - both $9.00. Lighter breakfast options are also available starting at child friendly fruit toast $2.50. Gluten free bread is available for a small additional charge. Fresh juices will kick start your day and there are five freshly squeezed combinations to choose from with the signature ‘Kwerky Cleanser’ with pineapple, watermelon, carrot, celery and ginger a health boosting blast. Sweet treats start at just $2.00 for protein bliss balls and include a number of GF items.
New all-day menu items are proving popular, with hearty steak sandwiches of locally sourced rib steak, onion, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, cheese and sauce for $10.50 as well as the classic B.L.T for $6.50. The cafe also offers all day toasted sandwiches for $5.00 with a good selection to tempt your tastebuds like ham cheese and tomato, baked beans (yum!) and chicken cheese and mayonnaise. From this week they will be introducing lovely fresh gourmet sandwiches on Turkish bread. Kwerky Cafe Shop 2/50 Simpson Street Beerwah, 5494 6829. Thongs and superhero fundraiser A couple of years ago GC&M News featured local Ryan Blomfield a cancer survivor who was participating in the ‘Ride to Conquer Cancer’. This year he and his team competed the Cyc-co’s two day bike ride, but they’d still like to add to their fundraising total. So if you are up for some fun that will raise funds to support Ryan’s efforts, head along to the Woombye Bowls Club on Sunday, October 11 from 10.00am - 2.00pm. The event is called Thongs and Superheros – and if you don’t think you can pull off a ‘Superhero’ costume then a fancy hat with your thongs will be suitable. The day involves teams of four or come along on the day and make up a team, take part in mini games, karaoke and raffles. Cost is $15.00. If you can’t get to the event but would still like to make a donation, go to the website http:/ br15.conquercancer.org.au. Click on the Brisbane Tab, and then enter Ryan Blomfield into the search participant and make a donation.

In the Garden with Brownie
Peachester District Horticulture Society Jobs for the yard in October
I don’t want to scare you, but there’s only 11 more weeks until Christmas, and if you want your garden to look it’s best, you’ll need to start putting in some effort now before it gets too hot (and too late). This is the best time to plant your fruit trees. Make sure you dig a hole three times the width of the pot and twice as deep. Use compost enriched soil to backfill around the root ball. It’s a good idea to plant in a raised mound so that the roots don’t become waterlogged during heavy rain. Don’t put fertiliser in the bottom of the hole – as it will just wash downwards away from the roots. Put some slow release fertiliser on the top of the soil so that it will leach down towards the roots. • Look at top-dressing your lawn. A thin layer of top-dressing soil is best. Any hollow areas need the turf lifted, the soil added underneath, and then replace the turf. Don’t just pile it on top as it will kill the grass and encourage weeds. • If you’re lucky enough to grow tropical peaches, you should be picking them this month. • Watch out for leaf miner in your citrus trees. Recent new growth is susceptible to this burrowing caterpillar. Spray every two - three weeks with a pest spray or white oil to control the problem. • Prune your poinsettias by two thirds to promote strong growth for next autumn. • Vines – flowering or fruiting – will be growing quickly, so keep training them so that they grow where you want them to (not the other way around). • Dig lots of compost and manure into the spot where you will be planting your dahlias next month. • Grape vines will be growing and bunches of grapes forming. Keep up the water to ensure plump juicy fruits. • Prune your figs and mulberries. Next seasons fruit are produced only on the new growth. So pruning will mean more fruit. • Plant seed or seedlings for Christmas dinner, especially colourful, leafy lettuces like red mignonette, butter beans, golden button squash and cherry tomatoes. • Your mangoes, citrus and lychees need good soil moisture during this month – water weekly. • The warmer weather is perfect for planting tropical fruit trees, such as babaco, longan and tamarillo.
Contributed by Patricia Bradford Members met in the delightful garden of Gordon and Cath Howitt for the September meeting. Cath Howitt gave us a short history of their garden. The front part had many trees and a selection of shade loving plants. The orange flowering Clivias certainly stood out. The back garden was more open and the Azaleas were in full bloom. Members managed to have a wander around the garden in between showers. Results of the competition bench for August: 1st Gordon Howitt 18 points, 2nd Pam Innes 14 points. The next meeting is at the Peachester Hall on Thursday, October 15 at 9.30am. Visitors welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169 Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer). Dr Percy Harrold - Landsborough Community Seventh-day Adventist Church One sleepless Sunday morning in Papua New Guinea I phoned Macca on the ABC knowing my wife would be listening in Sydney. She missed the interview, but lots of friends heard it! Unexpectedly I had found myself by default as the only doctor at a mission hospital in the PNG highlands. The surgeon was on furlough back in Africa and was stranded there with visa problems. In the two weeks I had to find a temporary replacement there was no sign of a suitable medical practitioner waiting to be asked. So Sunday, December 2 1998 I flew to Mt Hagen from Sydney. Two hour’s drive from Mt Hagen over winding mountain roads, through numerous villages, brought me to Sopas Adventist hospital. Not the tertiary Sydney Adventist hospital or Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, but a 120 bed referral hospital for the province of Enga, Sopas an important centre of

care. I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the workload and the complexity of the surgery… much of which I had neither seen nor done before. I had an automatic rifle and two shotguns used in local clan warfare pointed at me for about 15 minutes, and had shotgun pellets land on the metal roof during ward rounds. When it came time to save two lives with an emergency caesarean section, another with an above-knee amputation, and another haemorrhaging internally from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, where could I turn? No real surgeons were available. With blood cross-matched I learned to trust more in God. But I had forgotten that the locally trained theatre staff did this stuff on a daily basis. Only after the right instruments and sutures landed in my hands did I realise that trust was so important; trust both in God and in my fellow man. I spoke with God in prayer virtually continually over the next three weeks until Dr Isaac returned. Now like Peter who had been at the cross with Jesus, I too know as Peter said in 2 Peter 1:16 that ‘we are not following cunningly devised fables.’ Trust Him and see.

White belts leading the way at San Contributed by Cameron Taylor San Taekwondo September grading in Maleny impressed instructors and members of the public. 4th Dan head instructor Norm Taylor tested 20 students, with over half being white belts. Taekwondo has a wide appeal - the youngest student grading was six-years-old and there were several adults also grading. Not all students passed the grading, but overall the standard was very impressive. Grading’s are designed to test technical skill, fitness and ability to apply to changing situations through performing a series of drills, sparring and breaking timber. The next grading will be in December and will see a number of the first students from Beerwah attempt to grade for their black belts after several years of hard training. “The high standard we set for our students’ means that it is a real achievement receiving a new belt, and San Taekwondo is the only club on the hinterland that can issue students with internationally recognised certification from the Kukkiwon in Korea,” said Norm. The standout students were the white belts, with Joey Mortimer winning the award for the best grading. Students are looking forward to new challenges that come with a promotion. Classes will run throughout the school holidays as the Team prepares to head to Adelaide for the National Championships this weekend. San would like to thank the continued support of Hinterland Sports and Karom Salts. For more information visit www.santkd.com

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Apple antics There was a farmer who planted many apple trees. He was disturbed all the time by some local kids who would sneak into his farm at night, eat the apples and also throw them around so they would be crushed. The farmer came up with a very clever idea that he thought would scare the kids away for sure and save his crop from being destroyed. So one day he made up a sign and posted it in the field next to the apple trees. The next day the kids showed up like clockwork and they saw a sign hanging that read, ‘Warning! 1 of
the apples on these trees has been injected with cyanide. Cyanide is very dangerous to eat. Keep away.’ So the kids ran off, made up their own sign and posted it right next to the sign that the farmer made. The farmer showed up the following day and he looked over the field and noticed that no apples were missing, but a new sign hung next to his. He drove up to the sign and started reading ‘Now there are two’. Submitted by Rick, Glass House
