Hi Everyone As the weeks go by since the change of state government, the community is being advised of numerous spending cuts that will be introduced across Queensland. One recent announcement that could have a direct impact on our local community could be the closing of 30 regional Courthouses. While we were not able to get clarification from the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle whether or not our Landsborough Courthouse was on the list of 30 – speculation is running rife that it is. The independent member for Nicklin, Peter Wellington has announced that this is the case – and now we will have to wait until after the budget is brought down in September for the decision to be confirmed. In next week’s edition we will bring you a story about the court house and the function it serves in our

community and what type of impact it would have on our community if we lose this asset. If you have an opinion that you would like to share about this issue our deadline for letters is 12.00noon on Friday. And it seems after my encouragement a few weeks ago to take advantage of our letter’s page, plenty of locals have embraced the opportunity to have their say. New initiative offers safe haven for keys and motorists

A new drink driving campaign is being trialled on the Sunshine Coast to encourage people to drink more responsibly.

The Key Cocoon, which was launched last month, is a simple enough idea. If you are planning a night out, you put your keys in a sealable plastic bag that features a drink driving message before you start drinking. When you are ready to go, you have to take the keys out of the bag and are confronted by the drink driving message. A joint initiative of the Sunshine Coast Council, CALM Sunshine Coast and the Queensland Police Service, the Key Cocoon is a great initiative, and according to the CALM Hinterland Chair and Landsborough Hotel publican Terry Morrow. “It only takes someone to have a second thought and change their mind about drink driving and we’ve had a win,” Terry said. “If we can make someone think twice about drink driving, it’s worth the effort,” he said. Terry said locally, the initiative was being trialled in those hotels that are part of the CALM Hinterland accord, which was launched in 2010. CALM, the Collaborative Approach to Liquor Management, is a voluntary industry-based partnership (also known as a liquor accord) that aims to find practical solutions to alcohol-related problems. Terry said a key element of this was about harm minimisation.

Sergeant Wayne Denholm from Maroochydore Police Station, who came up with the idea, said the Key Cocoon creates one more barrier between potential drink drivers driving, by breaking the routine of getting into their vehicle. “With the Key Cocoon, the individual has to make the decision to break open the bag to access their keys prior to driving and will have to think about the decision they are making,” he said. Drink driving continues to be a major killer on Queensland roads, with alcohol being a contributing factor to approximately 34 per cent of road fatalities on Queensland roads each year.

Last week, as part of their third birthday celebrations, members of the Glasshouse Country Menshed were happy to pose with their new shed, a second hand shipping container donated by the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains and Community Recycling. Their new shed, which boasts their name courtesy of another local business, ATL Graphics, provides a dedicated storage area where the group can house their growing store of donated tools and supplies. Featuring hand-made shelving salvaged from recycled wood and shadow boarding for all their tools, the group’s coordinator, Bob McLean, said the new shed was a testament to the great support they had from the local community. “Since we started three years ago, we’ve been very lucky for all the support we’ve had from the local community, from the donation of tools and other materials that we can use for our projects, to grants and funding from the Sunshine Coast Council for new shirts and equipment, to businesses like Community Recycling, who allow us to use their workshop to meet each week,” Bob said. Bob said the aim of the Menshed was to provide men with an opportunity to share skills and information, and make new friends. He said sharing information about men’s health was also an important objective of the weekly get togethers. “That is also one of the reasons why we have just amalgamated with the Australian Menshed Association,” Bob said. “By joining forces, we’ve got access to better men’s health resources, more support, and funding opportunities,” Bob said.

Members of Glasshoue Country Menshed are right at home in their new shed Bob said new members are encouraged to join the group, which currently numbers about 30. “You don’t need any special skills, it’s just a great way to learn new things and meet new people, and there is no commitment to attending every week,” Bob said. Since its inception, the group has been actively involved in a number of community projects, including supporting the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce’s Sustainability Expo, the creation and donation of a world jigsaw to Glasshouse Mountains State School and sponsoring the formation of the Glasshouse Country Prostate Support Group, to name a few. The Glasshouse Country Menshed meets weekly from 8.30am - 12.30pm at the market workshop at Community Recycling, Roberts Road, Beerwah. New members are always welcome. Superboat star in our midst What some people do to relax! When he’s not busy at his day job as the business manager at Glasshouse Country Christian College, Graham Fraser can generally be found working at his other two local businesses, Video Ezy and Eagle Boys, in Beerwah. So when the weekend rolls around, how does this well-known Glasshouse local relax? Catching waves at 175 kilometres per hour on the open water, of course. Graham, the current national offshore superboat champion, is gearing up to retain his title when round four of this year’s superboat championships are held here on the Sunshine Coast this weekend. Currently 75 points ahead and half way into this year’s championships, Graham is hoping a

home ground advantage will see he and his team mate and throttle man Scott Gehrman increase their lead in Class Two of the Championships, the Supercat 600 hp, which will be held at Mooloolaba on Sunday. For the uninitiated, offshore superboating can be likened to a motor grand prix on water. Graham’s vehicle is a 7.62 metre long (25 ft), 600 hp hand built water craft that can reach speeds of up to 175 kilometres per hour. And on Sunday, he will put his driving skills to the test when he competes against 13 other boats over a 8.5km course in the open water off Mooloolaba. But unlike a traditional grand prix, Graham reckons the most dangerous part of his sport will be towing his boat to Mooloolaba. He said safety is paramount in the sport which generally only makes news when an accident occurs. “Safety has really increased, all precautions are taken and accidents and injuries are rare,” said Graham, who has been competing in the sport for the last six years. Graham, a keen fisherman and boatie who has always loved the water, said the adrenalin of the sport was a great way for him to unwind and relax with his family. “Although it’s not a sport the family can compete in together, it is very family orientated.

My family travels the race circuit with me during the year, and it becomes very much a social outing. “You meet lots of good people along the way, and when we’re not on the water Graham Fraser in the middle of a race, there is a great team atmosphere amongst all the competitors, looking after and helping each other out,” Graham said. He said his long term goal was to race overseas in either the United States or Dubai. “My wife and I love travelling, so hopefully that will be a good enough excuse for her,” he said. Graham is hoping there will be plenty of locals cheering him on at the weekend when the event gets underway on Saturday, with the pole position shootout at 2.00pm, followed by the racing on Sunday from 11.00am. The best spots to view the racing, which will take place about 800 metres offshore, will be between Alexandra Headlands and the Spit, Mooloolaba. To get a closer look at the mighty machines out of the water, head down to Parkyn Parade from 2.00pm on Friday, until Sunday evening. From face painting to special effects make up, body painting and air brushing, Bec Star Anthony is yet another of Glasshouse Country’s hidden gems, a success story built not only on hard work and dedication, but also a fair share of creative talent. The former Melbournian moved to Mooloolah five years ago to escape the rat race, and hasn’t looked back. This young entrepreneur and self-taught artist, who now runs three companies and is about to publish her second book, started her empire from home around five years ago as a face painter. Her first business, Bec’s Craftmania, kicked off in 2007, offering face painting and art and craft for parties and events. By 2009, she had launched her second business, BecStar Anthony, a specialty makeup, photography and air brushing business, and later this month, she will launch her third, TRU fx supplying specialty makeup products around the world. Considered one of the country’s best make up and special effects artists, when she is not busy in her home studio, or travelling interstate on assignment, she’s hosting workshops, teaching others how to perfect their face painting and make up artistry skills. Celebrating our unsung heroes Every day of every week, there are local residents volunteering hours of their time to help out in our wider community. From reading to the elderly, mentoring school children, preparing meals and organising tree plantings, the range of activities they undertake is as wide as it is varied. They often do it just for the love and enjoyment of it, and are happy to go about it without any fuss. But in a sign of recognition for these unsung heroes, we want to share their stories, so every month, we will feature one of these remarkable individuals, in an effort to celebrate and thank them. To kick things off, we recently caught up with Peachester local Eunice Prickett, who together with husband Ted, has a very busy weekly schedule that sees the pair share their time between local school children, the church community, the elderly, and the needy. Eunice’s regular week looks something a little like this. There’s classroom and library help at Glasshouse Country Christian College, religious education lessons and classroom help at Beerwah Primary, and mentoring at Beerwah High. Then there’s the Foodbank at BADYACC, where she volunteers three days a week, as well as offering an offsite service another two days a week. A member of the Glasshouse Anglican Community Church, she regularly donates her time to help out at the church, and coordinates the annual World Day of Prayer, which is held in March each year. She also makes regular weekly social visits to local elderly folk in their home, to share a cup of

coffee and a chat, and sometimes helping them to appointments. She also makes snuggle rugs for Humanitarian Projects Incorporated. Since she started helping out, she estimates she has made around 230 rugs, which are sent overseas to poor, impoverished children. Ted assists Eunice with the Foodbank, and is also heavily involved with church activities, including organising a bimonthly men’s ecumenical breakfast, which Eunice oftens cooks for. A former teacher aide, Eunice said she likes to keep herself busy because it “beats doing housework.” But the truth of the matter is Eunice and Ted wouldn’t have it any other way. They both believe it’s part of their strong Christian faith that compels them to want to help others, but agree irrespective of that, it’s all about helping one another out. “I’ve got this innate sense of wanting to help other people,” Eunice said. That, combined with her enjoyment of what she does, keeps Eunice going, despite crippling pain in her hands, brought on by carpal tunnel syndrome, which she has suffered from for nearly 20 years. According to Cheryl Byers, the head of Primary at the Glasshouse Country Christian College, Eunice has been a blessing to the school since she started volunteering there in 2005. “As a retired teacher aide with many years of service working with students with disabilities in a number of schools, Eunice brings this experience

Eunice Prickett with husband Ted to the students she supports every week at the College,” Cheryl said. “Eunice is much loved by everyone – students and teachers alike. “Working with children is like riding a bike. You never forget how to do it or lose your love for it. In my opinion, this is a calling, not a job and people like Eunice never retire. They simply work with children in another way,” she said. Ted and Eunice, who have been married for 54 years and have six grown children, have an understanding and appreciation of each other’s commitment to helping others that can only come from a shared passion. “Just knowing we can be of benefit, that we can help someone less fortunate, is all the reason we need,” Ted said.

Mac vs PC – Which is the right choice for you?

Apple computer owners are known around the world as 'Mac Evangelists' for their borderingon-religious devotion to the Apple brand. We get so many customers through the door that say they are looking for a new computer but have been told by their son/daughter/'technical friend' etc. to ONLY consider a Mac – but is it the right decision? Not always! While there is no doubt that Apple computers are good quality – there are some points that you should aware of if you are considering the switch from PC to Mac! Cost – Nearly double! The cost of a new Apple computer is extraordinarily high compared to the cost of an equivalent PC. With the internal components all being the same these days – the difference really only comes down to external ‘packaging’ and the Operating System. New models can be difficult to repair/upgrade The ‘reparability’ of the latest release models is extremely low – the new MacBook Pro is virtually non-upgradeable. They even feature proprietary ‘pentalobe’ screws holding the case together. Battery not charging anymore? Replacing it simply by purchasing a new one (as you would have done in the past) is no longer a practical option – they are glued in place. Chances are that an Apple store can do it for you – but it won’t be cheap! Mac O SX vs Windows 7 Make sure you do check out Windows 7 as an option – it has come a long way since the days of XP and Vista and is much faster and more user friendly than it ever used to be. The Apple operating system is great, but many people do struggle when making the transition. Ask yourself if you are a fast learner with these sorts of things? If not, then it might be far less frustrating to stick with a PC! So don’t just rule out PC when you are looking for a new computer. They are still a great, and often very cost effective option for many people.

The world has become smaller thanks to the internet. First we were given the World Wide Web of shared information, then chat rooms to share our discussions, and more recently social networking to share our friends, our memories, our comments and even our recommendations by way of likes and dislikes. Online shopping followed as an obvious progression, first with physical items (eg. purchasing a pair of shoes) but quickly moved into completely virtual items - that’s right, people are paying money (and lots of it) and getting absolutely nothing!! Olympic fever at Landsborough

Landsborough may be a very long way from London, but Landsborough State School is abuzz with excitement about the Olympic Games. To coincide with the London Olympics, students have been studying the history of the Olympic Games, Olympic sporting events and traditions such as the Olympic Torch Relay. Students Zaac and Olivia Whan brought in the torch which their Aunty Shayne carried for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games to share with fellow students. Parent of Landsborough State School children and Sydney 2000 torchbearer, Kylie Merola, also brought her Olympic torch in to share with some of the junior school. The children were excited to see an original Olympic torch and listened intently as Kylie retold her Torchbearer experience. With the London Olympics now upon us, students can watch the entire event unfold and be inspired by the many fantastic personal achievements they will witness during the games. GO AUSTRALIA!

Leadership earned and valued

Eighteen Year 6 students at Glasshouse Country Christian College recently achieved a six month milestone when they became leaders at a special service on Wednesday. In previous years, leaders were elected at the beginning of the year and then had to live up to the position. This year, for the first time, leaders had to pledge their service at the beginning of the year and then had to prove themselves with many hours of service. The Year 6 students earned their leadership badges by performing tasks such as helping in the library, raising and lowering the flag each day, assisting Prep students to and from the busses, coordinating junior sport activities and being buddies for younger students during play times. After students read their leadership pledge, proud parents went forward to pin the badges on their beaming children.

HOLA - Beerwah State High School welcomes exchange students Contributed by Tanya Hayden, deputy principal Beerwah State High School is currently playing host to 16 students from Liceo Lenka Franulic School in Santiago, Chile. The students have come to Australia to further their study of English language and learn more about our country. They have been attending classes and many have been experiencing subjects which are not offered at their school, such as home economics. The students have been very impressed with the beauty of Beerwah State High School and amazed by the presence of kangaroos in the school grounds. Aside from class lessons the students have participated in a number of organised activities; a welcome barbeque at Mooloolaba Spit, a day at Australia Zoo, a surfing lesson at North Caloundra Surf School at Dicky Beach, horse riding through the bush at Mooloolah Valley Riding Centre, a day trip to Brisbane and, one of the highlights, a climb to the top of Mount Ngungun to take in the views of our spectacular patch of the world. On Thursday, July 26, the school held a special assembly which was attended by the Honorary Consul of Chile, Mrs Kathy HermasillaSilva who is based in Brisbane. One of the Year 12 Chilean students, Javiera Morales addressed the students about the differences between education in Chile and Australia.

She said that our students were very fortunate; that a school like ours would only be available in the private education system in Chile. The students attend class from 8.00am until 4.30pm and there are 45 students in every class. Then, Fernanda, Vale and Maciel performed an indigenous Chilean dance which our students found mesmerising. Professor Paulina Moya presented a gift to the school from Liceo Lenka Franulic. None of this would be possible without the amazing generosity of our host families and the school would like to express its appreciation for all they have done to make our visitors feel very welcome. Special thanks must also go to our Spanish teacher, Mrs Viviana Ramirez and Head of Communications, Mrs Kath Bateman for all of the hard work they did to make this exchange happen. We are hoping that next year some of our Spanish students will be able to take up the opportunity to have a cultural exchange in Chile to broaden their appreciation of the culture and to expand their Spanish language skills.

For the first time Unity College entered into the Market Chef competition held by Eumundi Markets. The competition is for schools/training Colleges from around the Sunshine Coast. The cook-offs are a real challenge for the students each week, as they are only told the theme – not the particular dish – prior to each competition. The competition is designed to be educational and fun! This year Unity College Market Chef team consist of Bonnie Brittle, Bianca Egan, and Sarah Christie from Year 9, David Hayes, Liam Morgan and Michaela Sauzier from Year 12. Unity’s market chef team competed in four challenges over the term with themes such as Vietnamese, Japanese, Gluten free and Thai. These types of challenges enhance teamwork, confidence and culinary skills. Within those four challenges Unity College was awarded a high achievement. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN)

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network celebrated National Tree Day by enhancing the Page Street Bushland Park which was revegetated in 2011 for the same occasion. Some damage had occurred due to the very wet year and flooding, and a small amount was the result of vandalism. The general opinion was that the previous planting had survived well considering the 12 month time span. A group of dedicated volunteers braved the cold morning to replant lost species and stake those that had collapsed due to flooding. Most welcome was a visit by our local state member and Minster for the Environment, Mr Andrew Powell. Andrew as usual was more than willing to get his hands dirty and planted a number of Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines. At the end of the planting, morning tea was enjoyed by all. Our thanks go to those who participated and sincere apologies to anyone who could not locate the planting area. Next time we will ensure adequate signage for those who have not visited this lovely natural area!

Get computer savvy at Morris House Affordable computer classes are being held at Morris House in Landsborough for people across the Glass House Country area. Computer teacher Greg Kesby said the classes are hosted by the community for the community. “We are encouraging people to take the whole course to not just how to work around the computer, but to understand some of the background information of how things work,” he said. Genuine act of kindness

What a beautiful act of kindness by Jane Connolly of Beerwah to stop to help a young roo recently on Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains. Unfortunately, the majority of calls we receive for koalas and kangaroos are from passing motorists such as Jane who do stop to help injured wildlife, whilst the car that did strike the animal doesn’t. The mother of the roo would feel the same as any of us would at losing a child - confused, sad and lost. Animals are at the bottom of humanity’s list of priorities. With people wanting huge houses and shopping centres, most of our region’s wildlife is now road kill or in zoos. Please don’t ignore an injured animal - they are sentient, caring beings who have families and social bonds and we must start showing more compassion and care to those we share this precious Mother Earth with. Drivers at risk

Recent comments concerning the Glasshouse Mountains Village intersection with Steve Irwin Way are very pertinent. Steve Irwin Way has a significant volume of traffic in both directions. The Railway Street intersection at Landsborough has a similar problem in that traffic is potentially at risk whenever vehicles are attempting to cross from or onto Hardwood Road or turning into Steve Irwin Way. At weekends, when visitors are driving to and from the Blackall Range and Maleny, this intersection is nothing less than chaotic. Risk taking becomes the only way to enter the traffic stream and lives have already been lost. Road upgrades were planned to include traffic lights but have been shelved due to lack of funding. In order to save lives, surely an interim traffic light system at both intersections would not be beyond the finances of the Main Roads Department? Come on, Minister of Roads Scott Emerson, make a decision that will save lives. Your department underlings are good at tunnelling in and around Brisbane at the cost of billions of dollars, but we here on the Sunshine Coast also pay taxes. Let’s have some ‘CAN DO’. Pathway closure

With regard to the pathway between Dana Close and Gardner Street, Glass House, an onsite inspection with property owners, Rick Baberowski and Council staff has been held. All parties are working on possibilities to resolve the situation, but this will take time. Meantime, for safety reasons, the suspended section of the pathway has been removed and barriers erected. Unfortunately, some residents are ignoring these and continue to knock down portions of the barrier. What is she thinking?

Councillor McKay has finally agreed to make herself available for personal consultation on a monthly basis. Having just read that the first consultation will take place at Mooloolah Valley on Thursday, July 26, I was disgusted to hear that the venue for this was to be a local cafe at between 7.30am and 8.30am in the morning! I am at work from 6.00am and those that are mothers are getting the kids off to school at that time. Most employed people are hard at work at this time. Perhaps this ‘consultation’ exercise is aimed at retirees......many of whom will still be in bed at that time of the morning! I wonder just how many ‘consultations’ were made at that time of the morning on the 26th? Mooloolah Valley has a perfectly good Community Hall as well as a Community Centre where space would be available for ‘consultations’ at a time more in keeping with the normal lifestyle of the residents. Many thanks to Kye the unknown saviour who was behind me when my old girl (1961) broke down, at the stop sign turning onto Steve Irwin Way on Sunday. Note to self though, the odometer in the old girl is in miles and while hard to see and no trip meter, must be checked and recommended to refuel after about 232 miles travelled (for those interested that works out to

between 16 and 17 miles per gallon or 16.5 l/100 km). Otherwise she will run out of fuel. He went home and got his jerry can, and then went and got me fuel and brought it back. All with his wife and kids in the car on their way out. There are really helpful strangers out there. Also double note to self, when the little lady suggests to fill up, I had better or I will never hear the end of it. Doesn’t it add to the adventure! Love my girl. David Old girls owner

Interesting to read where our Local Member is going to do great strokes, with this Greentape Reduction of National Parks. He mentions bee keepers, that National Parks are apparently going to commence looking after our bee keepers. I will watch with interest. I know a few bee keepers, have even traversed a few National Parks and Forestry areas where these bee keeper's pay good money to obtain their bee sites. Now you might say, so what. Well let me tell you, as I’ve said, our bee keepers pay very good money to our National Parks, but they are treated extremely poorly from what I have observed. Let’s face it, the bee keepers require big trucks to convey their hives into these parks and bee sites. Our Local member should take the time to speak with a few bee keepers, have a look at the actual sites and positions they are dedicated to in his National Parks. He might learn a thing or two, and if he is so concerned, look into why the bee keepers, have to pay to place their hives in our National Parks. To my way of thinking, they, the bee keepers, should be Paid to place their hives in our National Parks and access be made accessible to them by the National Parks, they have the graders and equipment to do so. QTC website - good reading

Recently there has been much discussion in the media about the state of the Queensland economy. Many readers would find the Qld Treasury Corporation (QTC) web site is good reading. QTC borrows money to finance Government infrastructure. Its total debt is currently $79 billion. That is a huge amount, but all governments in liberal democracies have similar debt. That’s how we create a society with health and education, community programs, and give assistance to industries. Queensland has a far lower level of General Government interest payments and debt compared to other similar international states, according to Standard & Poors. Consider the cost of a decade of population growth in Queensland: the six lane highways, Gateway Bridge, tunnels, flood repair. Check out the QTC papers on-line. Alpacas coming to Beerwah Charity Sports Award winning Huacaya alpacas, bred and raised by Jeff and Jill from Sunline Alpacas at Palmwoods, will be on display at the Charity Sports Day on Saturday, August 25. Harry was blind. I don’t know how long he had been in the Eventide nursing home at Brighton. What I do know is that Harry loved worshipping with others each week in the little blue-painted church by the Sandgate lagoon. As a teenager I had the privilege of collecting Harry from his room and driving him the four kilometres to the church. Two things about Harry. Firstly, he was much more comfortable if he took my elbow rather than me taking his. Secondly he loved to listen to the Scriptures being read, and that just listening was worthwhile. That was half a century ago. Harry was called to rest not long after. But he has provided me with memories that inspire. He was always grateful for the ride. He neither complained about his lack of sight, nor let it hamper his activities and his white cane was his friendly ‘eye’. I do not remember him ever praying for his sight to return, although he knew of the miraculous healings Jesus Christ provided to

both blind Bartimaeus and the man who was born sightless as a baby. I guess if he was alive today something may have been able to be done surgically for Harry, but he lived in his time. Today others who are vision impaired have so many spiritual resources available to ‘read’ in audio formats. The Bible in so many versions in spoken form; being available on CD or online via the internet makes ‘reading’ accessible for the visually impaired. Harry would be in his element in 2012. Jesus provided sight to the blind - even the spiritually blind. He tells us in Revelation 3:18 -20 ‘to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment that thou mayest be clothed....... and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.... I stand at the door and knock.’ The invitation still stands. Blind or not, he offers the open door to each of us. Harry knew.

National Tree Day

I proudly spent National Tree Day with the good folks from the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN). GMAN hosted a tree plant at the Page Street Bushlands and the turnout of locals was pretty impressive. It was a great pleasure for me, both as the local Member and the Minister for Environment, to contribute to the event by planting a Birdwing Butterfly Vine. A big thanks to the organisers and the community members who gave up their Sunday morning to be involved in this national celebration.

Peachester Range Road

There was recently a Letter to the Editor in relation to a 'Speed Dip' along Peachester Range Road. I have asked the Department of Transport and Main Roads to investigate the site and report back to me as soon as possible. I will update the community when I have further information.

Hardwood Road/Railway Street intersection, Landsborough

I’m pleased to report a step has been taken in the right direction to help motorists who use this notoriously dangerous intersection. Department of Transport and Main Roads have advised they have investigated the issue (in particular how to help with visibility when trying to access Steve Irwin Way) and vegetation clearing – which includes removing long grass - at this location will start by the end of the month. They have also advised that the North Coast Region is continuing to progress the Safer Roads Sooner project, which includes upgrading this intersection, as a high priority. It’s anticipated the project design will be finished in November with construction to start early next year.

National park on the radar

I recently met with the Sunshine Coast Environmental Council and Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland to discuss the gazettal of a new national park at Caloundra, located between Golden Beach, Pelican Waters and the future Caloundra South development. If successful, this national park would be critical to the future of the Pumicestone Passage, which is such an important body of water for everybody on the Sunshine Coast, and also create a green lung, beneficial to the environment and future generations that will live here. Protecting our environment is essential and important to remember when creating massive developments, and I will be following this matter up with my colleagues.

This year’s theme is living and loving life. “Borrowers’ hopes of another rate cut in the coming months may be underpinned by the low inflation figures released last month. This might be enough for the Reserve Bank to recognise that some parts of the economy, particularly the property market, are in need of monetary stimulation,” she said. “But the decision won’t be made lightly. There are positive factors in our economy today and any further cuts to the cash rate may send signals to foreign investors that our economy isn’t in good shape. Demand for variable rate home loans reached an 11 month high in July as speculation of another rate cut in coming months lingers, according to national loan approval data from Australia’s largest independently-operated mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice. Rising three percentage points to reach 85 per cent of all new home loan approvals during July, variable rate demand has not been this high since August 2011, when it represented 86 per cent of all new loan approvals. Company spokesperson Belinda Williamson said the vast majority of borrowers are feeling as confident about variable interest rate movements now as they did back in August 2011, a time when borrowers had experienced nine consecutive months of steady interest rates, which was followed by rate cuts.

Green Army Funding Cut It has been very sad to see that the Skilling Queensland program, which funds the Green Army teams, has had all its funding cut by the State Government. Many environment groups, including us, relied on these teams to maintain and plant landslip areas, look after Council re-vegetation sites, and help in our nurseries. Green Army provided funding to train long-term unemployed people who need more skills to attain employment; and this funding cut will be devastating for young people who do not have the money to undergo this training. We are not sure how we will be able to look after the already planted landslip properties in the future as there is not much funding around for the many Landcare and Waterwatch groups to continue their essential work in the environment. This handsome local rainforest tree is known in the timber trade as Jackwood or Silver Sycamore, and it grows to a height of 10-15m in a garden situation with a dense dark crown, but has been found to be in excess of 30 metres in tall timber country where it is a valuable timber specimen. Jackwood is a good food source for fruit pigeons and is a great alternative to Camphor Laurel. The aromatic scented leaves are moderately glossy on their upper surface, duller on the lower surface, hairless and an ashy grey colour. The fruit is a 12-18mm drupe, wrinkled in appearance and dark glossy black. With cream to pale green, small numerous sweetly scented flowers, it is a striking bird attracting and shade tree for the larger garden. In revegetation terms this plant is a useful pioneer species, although it is a bit slow to grow when compared to other regeneration plants. Its hardiness makes it a great initial plant to place in margin areas of already existing rainforest patches. Late News Government to take action over deadly intersection The Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised it will fast-track the upgrade of a notoriously dangerous intersection at Landsborough by up to two years. It follows community rallying after a deadly accident in May at the intersection of Steve Irwin Way, Hardwood Rd and Railway Street, Landsborough, backed by Caloundra MP Mark McArdle. Mr McAdle wrote to Transport Minister Scott Emerson shortly after the incident, requesting an urgent review of the intersection. In a recent letter issued in June, Mr Emerson advised TMR was investigating options for fast-tracking delivery of the Safer Roads Sooner (SRS) Program, which includes future installation of traffic signals at the above-mentioned intersection, ahead of the scheduled timeframe of 2014-15. A letter sent by the Regional Director for TMR in July confirmed the SRS program at this intersection was a high priority, with design expected to be finished in November and construction to start in early 2013. Mr McArdle said it was a fantastic result not only for the people of Landsborough, but also for the thousands of people who travel past this intersection every day along Steve Irwin Way.
