Hi Everyone...

What's Happening August 2018

Regular readers of GC&M News know that I am a lover of knitting and crocheting. I say this in the way that means I ‘love’ to see our tree outside the office yarn bombed each year and not in a way that means I ‘love’ to actually knit and crochet myself. I am, however, an admirer of those talented enough to create visually amazing, as well as functional, items such as the one that our cover girl Caroline is modelling this week. The headwear that Caroline and fellow knitter Renate Kilpatrick make are truly remarkable and the term ‘beanie’ does not really do justice to these works of art. The ladies are eager to encourage other keen local knitters and crocheters to join them in putting their creative talents to the test and making either tea cosies or beanies to enter in ‘The Happy Hookers Fiber Art Tea Cosy / Beanie Competition 2018’ at the Landsborough Hall Markets. (And, no, we are not talking about that type of hooker!) Check out the story on page 5 to find out more.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Local News Fire season is now upon us Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford visited Maleny last week – which will be the base for a new $3 million fit-forpurpose fire and emergency response complex – to inspect the bushfire response capabilities in the region ahead of the official start of the 2018 season. And with the region being a hotspot for fires in recent years, Minister Crawford urged locals to finalise their bushfire preparations. “August 1 is the traditional start of the bushfire season in Queensland and is an important reminder to everyone to make sure they are ready if a bushfire strikes,” Minister Crawford said. “This year’s season is particularly concerning, given some parts of the state are already very dry and experiencing significant bushfire activity. “All households should have a Bushfire Survival Plan and make sure they remove flammable material, such as dry grass and leaf litter, from around the home. “Motorists need to plan ahead if travelling through bushfire-prone areas and ensure they have an alternative route in case roads are blocked.” In the recent budget, the Queensland Government committed more than $1 million towards a new complex in Maleny which will accommodate the local Rural Fire, State Emergency and Auxiliary Fire and Rescue Services.

For Professional Caring Service “This new complex will be an important addition to fire and emergency response efforts on the Sunshine Coast, which has been one of Queensland’s major bushfire hotspots in recent years,” Minister Crawford said. “It is almost one year since the intense bushfire at Caloundra, which burnt 700 hectares over three days, forced people to evacuate their homes and threatened lives and properties.” Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Tom Dawson said firefighters had been working hard in the lead-up to bushfire season to reduce the risk. “Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and its partner agencies have carried out hazard reduction burns across the state and staged community information events to get communities ready for bushfire season,” Mr Dawson said. “The public should work with firefighters to reduce the impact of this year’s bushfire season. “Firefighters are prepared, but they need the community to be proactive.”

No casino licence for the Sunshine Coast

Tax Tip # 6 Make sure your farmland is an ‘active asset’ You may be entitled to extra capital gains tax breaks on the sale of land if it is used in an ‘active business’. If farmland sits idle for more than half of your period of ownership, you may end up paying more tax. You need to make sure that you can show the ATO that the activities on the farm are more than just a hobby.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has welcomed Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones’s statement last week ruling out the granting of a casino licence for the Sunshine Coast under this Labor Government. Mr Wallace has led a long community campaign on behalf of concerned local residents opposing such a development on the Coast and to date had gathered more than 6,500 signatures on a petition against it. Mr Wallace said: “I welcome the statement by the State Minister for Tourism Kate Jones, that Queensland she has ruled out a casino r Ministe Tourism licence for the Sunshine Kate Jones Coast. “The people of the Sunshine Coast have spoken very loudly and very clearly to the State Government and to the Sunshine Coast Council that they do not want a casino licence granted anywhere on the Sunshine Coast, least of all in the new Maroochydore CBD development. “I applaud the efforts of Sunshine Coast locals who have stood with me and other local LNP Members of Parliament in standing against council’s desire to build a casino on the Sunshine

Coast and I thank them for their efforts. I also thank Kate Jones for her most recent decision.” In addition to his petition, Mr Wallace held a Casino Community Meeting in April attended by 300 local residents, made direct representations to both Mayor Mark Jamieson and Minister Jones, spoke regularly in the media on the subject and submitted Right to Information requests to both the State Government and local council in order to find out more about what private discussions had taken place. Mr Wallace intends to continue to closely monitor ongoing developments regarding the possibility of a casino on the Sunshine Coast, and has vowed to fight any further such proposals that arise under this and future state or local governments. Andrew Wallace welcomes the announcement

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Wonderfully weird winner Caroline Payne is local fibre artist and ‘beanieologist’. Her work can best be described as quirky, coolly creative and wonderfully weird. The Glasshouse Mountains artist recently entered examples of her work in the long running Alice Springs Beanie Festival, gaining both an award and a prize. With thousands of beanies made and sold at the annual charity event which started in 1997, the festival enjoys interest both nationally and internationally. By gaining awards at this year’s event, Caroline has been well recognised for her particular penchant for fibre art. Caroline won both a special mention with ‘The Stitched Up Beanie’ Certificate awarded for one of her highly imaginative creations (‘Galaxy Cube Intergalactic Journey Planer 3018’) and also won the ‘Beanie Festival Committee Acquisition Prize’ for her ‘Triwizard Tournament’ headpiece. The acquisition award is where the festival committee buys a unique piece and includes it as part of a national travelling exhibition. Caroline was originally put on to the festival by another fellow award-winning artist, the talented Renate Kirkpatrick. Like Caroline, Renate also features her work at the Landsborough Markets and both ladies recently took out top prizes at Maleny’s Knitfest. This is the third year that Caroline has entered her work in the annual festival and she is understandably thrilled to be a winner at this world recognised event. She says that she wasn’t

By Sonia Clark

able to attend this year but was able to send her pieces along with a friend who was attending the Alice Springs event. “I’d actually missed the call to tell me that I’d won and so when I did find out later I did the ‘happy dance’ – it was a really big deal!” says Caroline. Caroline says that she grew up in a crafty family where creativity was encouraged. She has always been artistic, and most of her mediums used have been self-taught. Her interest in fibre art has developed over the last 10 years and previously she worked a lot with sculpture, though she always enjoyed sewing and tactile work. A long-time local volunteer, Caroline has been involved with the Landsborough Hall for a number of years. She has held a weekly market stall for the last six years where people can view, buy and commission her creations. “I get inspired by books and what people want,” she says. “Anime and Cos-Play is big at the moment and so I get a lot of commission orders – especially from teenagers! I’m a huge Dr Who fan, so that’s also been a popular theme.” Never reading a pattern, all of Caroline’s designs are created by her from concept to the finished product. She sketches an idea, gets busy and puts her creativity to good use. Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural ‘Fibre Art Tea Cosy and Beanie’ competition held as part of the ‘Loving Landsborough’ celebrations, Caroline is organising her second Beanie and Tea Cosy Competition

Juanita Flett, Caroline Payne and Sue-Ellen Borham model some of Caroline and Renata’s beautiful work to run at the Landsborough Hall from Saturday August 18 until Saturday August 25. Last year 54 entries were received and organisers are again hoping for a good number of entries for this year’s fundraising event. Entries can be submitted right up until August 18 and are welcome from all age groups and can be knitted, woven, crocheted, sewn or made in any crafty medium – the only rule is that it must be a covering for a teapot or head. People will be invited to make a gold coin donation to view and vote during the week of the event in three categories: novice, intermediate and advanced. For more information and to download an entry form, go to the event’s Facebook page at The Happy Hookers Fiber Art Tea Cosy / Beanie Competition 2018. Planning scheme changes continue Don’t get too excited, but Sunshine Coast Council is asking for your comment on another round of Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme amendments. So, sit back on a sunny afternoon and leisurely thumb your way through the 229 page ‘Proposed Amendment Instrument’ along with the accompanying 111 page ‘Explanatory Memorandum’ and let council know what you think. Here are just some of the highlights relevant to our local areas: The Old Witta School land zone is being changed from Educational Establishment to Community Use. Some small sections adjacent to the Witta Recreational Grounds are changing from Environmental Management and Conservation to Rural and Sport and Recreation zones. The River School at Maleny is sensibly changing from Rural to Educational Establishment. Retirement villages are getting a makeover. The land where Maleny Grove Village is situated (on Palm Street) and the block immediately to the north is being changed from Low Density Residential to Community Facilities (residential care / retirement) with an increase to the allowable building height from 8.5m to 12m. The Glasshouse View Retirement Village in Beerwah will have its zoning changed from Medium Density Residential to Community Facilities (residential care / retirement). Height limits will be increased from 8.5m to 12m and 15m (depending on the section of the land).

Both the Erowal Aged Care facility in Maleny and the Mooloolah Gardens Retirement Village will be changed from their current Medium Density Residential zoning to Community Facilities and have their height limits raised to 12m. The properties between Toorbul Street and Forestdale Road at Landsborough will be given the extra designation of ‘Protected Housing Area’ meaning that some types of future development are discouraged to maintain the character and amenity of the area. Glasshouse Christian College in Beerwah will be able to build to 15m in the lot where the new section is under developed. State Schools are having their allowable building heights lifted as well – primary schools to 12m and high schools to 15m (both from the existing 8.5m). There is also a raft of changes to planning scheme codes and schedules, including the Medium Density Residential Code; the Dual Occupancy Code; the Dwelling House Code; the Residential Care and Retirement Facilities Code; the Rural Industries Code and the Rural Uses Code. The Sport and Recreation Zone Code is being amended to specifically allow the Maleny Showground to be used as a small-scale camping ground and caravanning park. To read it all or to make a comment, go to haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and you’ll find it all in the ‘Open Consultation’ section. Submissions close September 7, 2018.

Business News Locals can help ‘Feed a Farmer’ As drought engulfs much of eastern Australia, a unique charity program has emerged with a simple goal and a powerful concept. The Aussie Helpers ‘Feed a Farmer’ project is ensuring our drought affected farmers and their families are fed, one box at a time, using produce sourced directly from other Aussie farmers in similar circumstances. When the management of Beerwah and Palmwoods Hotel heard about this great project they were keen to get involved and support the work of the Feed a Farmers project in the coming months. The Pubs’ Marketing and Loyalty Manager, Cassie Ross said they will be kicking it off next Saturday, August 11 at both hotels with $1 from every steak and $1 from every schooner of Carlton Dry purchased on the day going to the important cause. With next Saturday night being their regular Beerwah’s Got Country night, Cassie is encouraging everyone to dress like a farmer and there will be collection tins out to raise money as well as. A few years back the pubs did something very similar with the Drought Angels and were able to raise just under $3,000 and they are keen to make this effort just as impressive. “We will be running this at Beerwah Hotel for the next three Country Nights, which fall on the second Saturday of every month,” Cassie said. The Aussie Helpers ‘Feed a Farmer’ project founder Mathew Grace explains that by sourcing produce direct from Aussie farmers it compounds

the impact of every dollar donated. “Feed a Farmer, like all charity projects, starts with a donation and ends with helping a person in need,” he said. “However, the ‘Feed a Farmer’ program Brooke Schubert is unique as we also performs this Saturday help a whole bunch of people in between who are struggling. “We aim to raise $100,000 – this will allow us to deliver 40 boxes of meat and seasonal produce per fortnight for the next 12 months. “The key to the Aussie Helpers ‘Feed a Farmer’ project is that we are not just helping the people who receive the boxes of produce but we are helping local farmers and businesses along the way. “When someone donates money towards a box of produce to help a drought affected farmer, we use that money to purchase meat and vegetables direct from other farmers. “We pay a fair price to farmers for these products, which supports their family, then this produce is processed, butchered and packed by local businesses who provide employment and support to local communities,” Mathew explained. To find out more or to make a donation directly with the project visit www.aussiehelpers.org.au

Update with Ursula Starkovsky Chamber President

Once again, we are at the end of another Chamber year with our AGM just around the corner. Looking back at the past year, I am pretty pleased with what we have achieved. We were able to secure a few very dedicated people to join and participate at the Executive level. First, we literally ‘grabbed’ Tracie Sanim at one of the meetings and asked her not just to join the Chamber but also be part of the Executive from day one. Then Michelle Christopher-Blokland and Brett Piercy from Hinterland Accounting got swept up in the excitement and offered their help. We started our Round Table Discussion Sessions with Tracie Sanim and were introduced to Marketing 101, starting with the website and following through with facebook advertising, google ranking etc. We learned about creating an ‘avatar’ of our main customers and directing all marketing efforts to this group of people. Next year we will follow up with Brett Piercy from Hinterland Accounting mentoring a few Round Table Sessions. Brett will teach business owners about making sure that the business remains viable in today’s economic climate and how to keep costs under control. Of course, Tracie will be back to continue with what she does best – sharing her experience and knowhow with our business community. Planning the way forward is to strengthen our position within the business community by providing networking opportunities as well as education at our meetings. Interested? Why don’t you show up at our AGM on August 21 at the Beerwah Golf Club, cost is $10 per person and I promise nobody will hassle you for a position in the Executive!

Planning continues for 150th birthday celebrations Heritage games such as skipping and quoits, and competitions for best beard and best pioneering outfit, will be some of the features of Bankfoot House’s 150th birthday celebration on Sunday October 14. Bankfoot House, the oldest family residence in the Glass House Mountains district, was established by Mary and William Grigor in 1868 to service the Cobb and Co coaches travelling between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields. Friends of Bankfoot House President Ron Gillinder said official events on October 14 will include the unveiling of a plaque commemorating 150 years, and the launch of the Friends’ book, titled ‘Bankfoot House – 150 years on Old Gympie Road’. A replica Cobb and Co coach is expected to be displayed and there will be an exhibition of whip cracking. Historical groups with a relationship to the Grigor family will be also be present – Caboolture Historic Village, Landsborough Museum, Peachester History Committee and Woodford Museum. Ron said several enthusiastic members of the Queensland Veteran Car Club will drive their pre-1919 vehicles from the Rocky Creek campsite near Landsborough along Old Gympie Road to Bankfoot House on the big day, to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Gympie Road. Tours of Bankfoot House will be escorted by the Friends and there will be a collection of small

Maleny Youth Festival needs you

By Sonia Clark The annual Maleny Youth Festival is back for another year. Promising a jam-packed program of ‘Gypsy Carnival’ fun, the event will be held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Friday September 14 from 3.30pm until 9pm. With the youth focused event growing steadily over the last few years, 2018 will mark the fifth year of festivities. Students at the Maleny Flexi School have once again been instrumental in developing the theme, concept and direction of this year’s festival. The event will feature bands and local musicians, a youth art exhibition, stalls, food and fun interactive youth workshops. Volunteer youth worker Lyndal Regent is thrilled to be involved and says that there are still opportunities to be part of the festival for local youth artists, stall holders, creatives or anyone offering youth-based engagement, activities or workshops. Getting involved is also a great way to deepen connections and show support for youth in the local Hinterland community. “The Festival is a fantastic opportunity for people to come along and see what young people can do, and showcase their creativity, skills and talents,” says Lyndal. As well as providing an inclusive and entertaining evening, the festival hopes to create awareness and support for a dedicated Maleny Youth Space. A ‘Youth Space Survey’ will be available during the event and attendees are invited to have their say about what would best support the needs of young people aged 11-25, their parents and families. In line with the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Plan, outcomes from the survey will be used to formulate a Maleny Youth Action Plan that will inform proposals, grant applications and local youth participation. If you would like to get involved in the 2018 Maleny Youth Festival, contact Lyndal on 0438 507 703 or Sammalen at Maleny Flexi School on 5429 6958.

Law firm backs play about justice

Local firm Easton Lawyers is supporting Maleny Players as a major sponsor of their upcoming play ‘12 Angry Men’. The classic American drama involves a murder trial jury struggling to reach consensus. Sharon Scofield from Easton Lawyers said last week she well remembers studying the play at school, especially the way a small piece of evidence proves crucial. While the play is riveting entertainment, full of conflict and suspense, it has an important theme. It reminds us that every citizen potentially has a role in ensuring that justice is done and that jury duty is not to be taken lightly. Ultimately justice depends upon the patient use of reason, even when apathy, emotion and prejudice stack the odds. Producer Andrew Wallace points out that the play deliberately avoids the kind of easy sentimentality or heroics typical of many dramas involving trials. Whether or not the young man on trial for his life is guilty of the crime in question, he is not an admirable character. The play makes clear that the right to trial by jury is not available in many countries and should not be taken for granted. It was originally written for television at a time when the USA was much more aware of its role in promulgating the value of rights and freedoms than seems to be the case today. For that reason Andrew and director Barry Harber felt it appropriate to preserve the flavour of mid 20th century America. An innovative visual prelude will help to establish the time and place in which the action unfolds. When: Friday August 10 at 7pm, Saturday August 11 at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday, August 12 at 2pm Where: The Playhouse, Maleny Barry Harber and Rob Hobson Showgrounds, Maleny Stanley River Road (jury foreman) show Sharon Tickets: $20 (at Imelda's shoe Scofield a switchblade knife that shop) on Maple Street, Maleny or at features in the play malenyplayers.org/bookings

Maleny Police would like to urge members of the community to be vigilant when it comes to securing their cars. Unfortunately there have been four incidents of unlawful use of a motor vehicles reported in the past month. A common factor in those cases was that the vehicles were left unlocked with keys left in the vehicle. Police want to remind the public to check vehicles are locked and secured when leaving them unattended. The thefts are almost always opportunistic, with offenders often entering premises through unlocked doors and windows to quickly grab keys left in easily accessible spots. Vehicles stolen in burglaries are mostly being used to commit other crimes, including other burglaries. Tips to keep your car safe: • Secure your keys at home, don’t leave them lying around on tables, benches, bedside table or hooks at the front door. Keep them out of sight. • Take your car keys with you, even if you are leaving your vehicle at home. • Keep valuables out of sight; this includes handbags, electronics, money, etc. If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day. You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersqld. com.au 24hrs per day.

what’s New... Landsborough Dog Park update We know that locals are keen for their four legged friends to start using the Landsborough Dog Park, but sadly for those high energy puppies its opening time is still about a month away. A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson has advised that, weather permitting, work will continue on the new Landsborough dog off-leash area for approximately a month. “Council has been able to fund and schedule an additional stage of this project to include a new culvert crossing, which will help provide better access to the park, and provide agility equipment, such as ramps, for the dogs to enjoy a range of activities,” the spokesperson said. “This will provide a better outcome for the Landsborough community and will remove the need for the park to be temporarily closed at a later date. “Once this final stage of work is complete, the park will open and will provide an enjoyable space for the community to exercise dogs of all sizes, with the main dog off-leash area separated from the small dog area. The new off-street car park will provide direct access to both the small and big dog parks.”

Reesha Lewis

The fitness journey of Beerwah local Reesha Lewis is both inspirational and motivational. Her incredible ability to dedicate herself to achieving her fitness goals is a wonderful testament to the ability of changing mindsets and habits to accomplish things you never thought possible. Reesha recently competed in the popular ‘King of the Mountain’ (KOTM) event in Pomona and was placed second in the women’s competition. To gain second place in the event against a field of competitive athletes is quite an achievement, however it is all the more inspiring when you discover that just three years ago she weighed 136 kilos, and in the last few years she has lost half her body weight. GC&M News recently had a chat to the local mum of two to find out more about her incredible journey. Q: How did you feel coming in second at KOTM? A: KOTM was an amazing experience and I am thrilled to walk away with a second place. It is a pretty big event that attracts so many top athletes and it was one of the hardest events I’ve done so far, I will definitely be going back next year to try and achieve a sub 30 minute time as my goal. Q: We understand your fitness journey all started three years ago with a climb of Mount Ngungun, can you tell us more? A: I was talked into walking to the top of Mount Ngungun by my sister and a friend. From that day, even though I struggled and my body hurt the entire time – when I reached the top it was feeling I cannot explain. It was just unbelievable and I wanted more! I would watch people racing

past me on the way up as I rested constantly, but I continued to tell myself that that could be me one day… Q: Tell us more about your exercise training? A: Over the last three years my exercise has increased. The fitter I got, the more I wanted to do – one class or one mountain a day just wasn’t enough. So now I exercise for two to four hours a day. I usually start the day with a high intensity class with one of my trainers at Landsborough, Chantal O’Leary, who runs Channy’s Group Fitness Fun, then I go straight to either Mount Beerwah or Mount Tibrogargan for a climb. I also now go to Body Shot Boxing Club at Caboolture two or three nights a week to train for two hours per session. As time has passed I’ve gotten quicker and quicker and Mount Beerwah only takes 36mins from the car park to the top and back to the car. Tibro is under 30 mins completed. I’ve climbed the majority of the mountains in the Sunshine Coast area as well as Mount Barney and Mount Warning. Q: Which is your favourite mountain and why? A: Mount Beerwah is my favourite mountain, it was the first hard climb my partner and I did together and holds a special place in both our hearts, it is an amazing view and just feels right.

Q: How do you feel these days? A: I can’t believe I’ve lost the weight I have and never imagined that I could feel this good ever. My body fought me the whole time, with an under active thyroid and low iron it was never easy. It was through the constant support from my loving partner Adam, beautiful mother Sue, family, friends and trainers that I was able to charge through every wall that I hit! Q: Anything else you’d like to share with our readers? A: I would like people to know that with the right mindset and hard work that anything is possible. You can be anything you want to be, you just have to try and never give up – if you want it bad enough you will get it!

Living - History Maleny Police Station Contributed by Mrs Pamela Porter, Maleny My name is Pamela Joy Porter (nee Williams) and my father Senior Constable Thomas Harold Williams was the first permanent Police Officer stationed here in Maleny. After reading the recent story in GC&M News about the history of the Maleny Police Station I wanted to clarify some of the details that I am aware off and the following is a brief history of how it all came about, taken from my father’s memoirs and what I know. My father was stationed at Maryborough in 1944, when he and my mother married. On return from his leave he was instructed to go to Landsborough Police Station, a two-man station with Sgt 2nd Class Mawn in charge. The police vehicle was a BSA motorcycle and side-car. “We had to take in Maleny, Conondale, part of Kenilworth, Beerwah, Peachester, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum; all in our area with very few bitumen roads,” my father said. Saturday morning was the chosen day for one of the officers, usually father, to ride up to Maleny to renew car regos, issue licences (drivers), write permits, etc, for ammunition and explosives. Business was conducted in a spare office of Stephen Porter & Co, Auctioneers. A clerk of petty sessions from Caboolture would come twice a week to conduct court sessions. The magistrate came from Gympie. Being on duty at the Maleny Show, day and night, was another job for the boys at Landsborough. I was born in 1946 and my sister 1949 at Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. In 1946 The Royal National Show (EKKA) resumed after the end of WW2.

Becoming a local operator for Pristine Water Systems Australia was highly appealing as the business provides an excellent extension of his previous professional experience. Warren explains, “Even though this is a new business venture for me which is exciting, having worked for so many years as a plumber dealing with water - I feel like in some ways I’m still working in the same industry.” Warren has recently taken on looking after the Glass House Mountains region which includes servicing a large area from Caloundra out to Kilcoy and also includes the area from Beerwah to Wamuran. As part of his operator training, Warren has

Allen Pitcher (left) and Warren Bale (right) recently completed an intensive couple of weeks of hands-on training and business support, and is looking forward to getting to know existing clients and meeting new ones. Having grown up on a rural property, Warren is particularly loving working again in a rural setting. “I’m loving being able to drive around and work in this area. It is just such a beautiful part of the world - I love it out here!” says Warren. Although most of his work involves servicing water tanks, Warren has already had clients on mains water wanting the “chemical taste” filtered out of their drinking water. To get in contact or to find out more, please phone Warren on 0411 774 767. Introducing Allen Pitcher Allen services Glenview and Landsborough, out to Maleny and the Hinterland. Wanting to spend time outside and mobile, Allen has embraced the opportunity to spend more time closer to home as

well. Through his own working experience and the extensive training and support offered by the Pristine Water Systems team, he enjoys offering his clients an individualised service to suit their exact requirements. “Each day I do the best I can to educate clients on how important using the best quality water is – don’t take chances with your family’s health,” he said. “Knowing how different chemicals can affect your body with daily use, I don’t like the thought of people poisoning themselves. Especially the young, elderly or immune suppressed. Correct filtration and water storage can really make a difference in all our lives.” To discuss what Allen can do to make your water the purest available, please call on 0404 302 723 today. Countdown to Container Refund Scheme Queensland’s Container Refund Scheme initiative is moving full steam ahead and Queenslanders will be able to get a refund for recycling their drink containers in just under three months. Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said Queenslanders will be able to get 10 cents back for recycling eligible containers at a range of outlets across Queensland from November 1. “The Container Refund Scheme will encourage recycling while also reducing the amount of plastic we see in the environment,” Ms Enoch said. “There will be a range of different type of refund point options such as permanent depot-style points, bag drops and reverse vending machines.” Ms Enoch said the company appointed to run the Container Refund Scheme, not-for-profit group Container Exchange (CoEx), was moving ahead to implement the 230 refund points by November 1. “There has also been strong interest from community groups about participating as donation points,” Ms Enoch said. “These donations points will allow Queenslanders to donate their containers to a charity, community group or school, allowing these groups to get the 10-cent refund. “Mobile collection points provide a perfect solution for these groups, and for them, it could be as simple as setting-up a temporary collection point at the local football game on a Sunday to collect the empty drink containers.” Alby Taylor, Acting Chair of Container Exchange, said there was a great opportunity for community groups and sporting clubs to register as a part of the scheme and receive the refund amount as a donation to their organisation. More information about the Container Refund Scheme is available here: www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/management/waste/container-refund.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Dead wood matters Dead wood is the lifeblood of an intricate web of life, and critical to the forest. An abundance of dead trees, rather than a sign of forest sickness, demonstrates that the forest ecosystem is functioning perfectly well. Decaying trees act as a carbon store and can sequester carbon for thousands of years. Dead wood also acts as a slow-release fertiliser. Nutrient stocks of sodium, phosphorus, nitrogen, calcium and magnesium in dead wood are slowly released back into the soil during decomposition. Importantly, dead wood provides habitat for varied and specialised fauna and flora, including mosses, lichens and liverworts. Many organisms contribute to the decomposition process, including bacteria, fungi and earthworms, while invertebrates, such as beetles, cicadas and millipedes, recycle the nutrients making them accessible to the next generation of forest growth. These wood-boring insects also help our hollow-nesting birds and mammals to excavate their nest and den holes. Ground nesting bees, major pollinators in the forest, utilise fallen trees for their home. Ants help to break down wood, aerate soil with their burrows, and protect trees against the onslaught of other insects. Many species of birds and mammals feed on other organisms that inhabit dead wood. Black cockatoos are commonly seen excavating beetle larvae from dead standing timber. For some plant species, dead wood is the main site for successful establishment of tree seedlings because it retains moisture and provides nutrients to the seedling. Protection of these ‘over-mature’ trees and dead logs is therefore vital.

We will remember them

Beerburrum State School held its annual cemetery re-dedication service on Monday July 31 to celebrate National Tree Week. School Captains Baylee and Jemma were assisted by Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski, Mr Brian Machin, President of the Glass House Mountains RSL sub branch, and Paul (Cemetery Services Division) of Sunshine Coast Council to plant a tree of remembrance. Those gathered were asked to remember our earliest pioneering families of the Beerburrum Soldier Settlement established at the end of WW1. A poem written by Keith Smith, the son of an early settler, was shared to illustrate the hardships endured by these families as they attempted to make a living on the land, with most suffering post-war injuries. Beerburrum State School is proud of its rich local history.

Matthew Flinders Day celebration

Contributed by Tina Davidson July 26 was a special day on the calendar for Beerburrum State School students as they remembered the explorer Matthew Flinders. Year 3-6 students climbed Beerburrum Mountain just as Flinders did (with the help of Aboriginal guide, Bongaree) on the same date 219 years ago when he became the first European to ascend one of the Glass House Mountains earlier named by Captain Cook. Prep-3 students celebrated by building sailworthy boats (like Flinders sloop, The Norfolk), using teamwork to build the highest mountain and playing games based on facts about the names of the school’s sports houses Flinders, Bongaree and Norfolk. The school is very proud of its local history and to have opportunities like this to make learning fun.

Contributed by Casey McIntyre Landsborough School kids did their bit recently to support Planet Ark’s National Tree Day. In doing so, they joined around 3,000 preschools, kindergartens, primary and high schools across Australia taking part in Schools Tree Day. Students learnt how to dig in for the environment and have fun getting grubby planting over 470,000 native seedlings, trees, shrubs, edibles and flowers. Landsborough P&C would like to send a big thank you to our volunteers as well as Savage Landscapes Supplies and Bunnings Caloundra for their support to help the students create the beautiful new garden.

You Said It Re: Phone tower locations

The news story, ‘Towers okay next to childcare centres’, in GC&M News, July 25 edition needs more to put the whole issue in perspective. The Sunshine Coast Council's tricky and dishonest moves to remove any planning reference to towers and their minimum distance from schools, day care centres, community centres and residential areas is a big slap in the face to Sunshine Coast residents. It shows council doesn't care about residents, their amenity and their health by removing the distance limits, as your article states. Amending the Telecommunications Facility Code to scrap any reference to distance from towers – both NBN and telecommunications, is extremely unacceptable decision making. The various community oppositions to new towers in the recent round of NBN Development Applications just publicised, with some 720 objections lodged to four NBN towers in the local area, shows the extent of concern and opposition from local residents. So, what does council do? It decides to scrap all reference to distances for towers so that a tower could now wind up right next to a childcare centre or school yard. There are numerous newspaper stories from every state in Australia demonstrating the local opposition to towers at schools and childcare centres. In most cases the telco company has had to back down and move the tower away. Not anymore here on the Sunshine Coast! Council has given these companies open slather to place their towers anywhere they like. What a travesty of a council, bowing to pressures from telecommunications companies with not a thought for locals. Richard Giles, Conondale

Zoning bylaws

The zoning bylaws covering the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are inadequate to protect this pristine area from inappropriate development and urgently need reviewing and changing. We have examples everywhere – a petrol station opposite a school in Maleny, high density rooming accommodation in Landsborough and another quarry in Beerburrum. The Hinterland appears under attack from some developers who have no respect for our Rural Village character. Maybe it is time to revisit the forming of our own Hinterland Council like Noosa, to protect this iconic tourist and residential area. Mike and Bev Brough Landsborough

Helping the chaplaincy service

Over the last couple of years, one of our local Beerwah businesses has had a tin out for donations to our local chaplaincy service. ‘Vianta Espresso & Bar’ owner Steve is passionate about kids, staff and families having a chaplain. We recently received the takings of the tin from Steve and there was nearly $180 collected over a couple of months. Thanks to Vianta and their customers for the support. they will never request payment or ask for bank details during a call. So everyone in Maleny and all over our region should protect their personal information and never give personal details or bank account details to an unsolicited caller claiming to be from NBN Co. Parts of Maleny have just gone live with the NBN, however residents who do not want to sign up right away have a further 18 months before they need to make the transition. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam then it is best to immediately report the scam to your bank or financial institution, and the police. You can also help to protect others by reporting the scam to the ACCC through the SCAMwatch website. Andrew Wallace MP Federal Member for Fisher

Sincere thanks

The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch would like to sincerely thank all those who contributed to our Anzac Day collection at the Glasshouse Memorial Hall. A significant amount totalling $620 was gratefully received, and this has been donated as follows; Legacy Laurel $220, Diggers Rest $200 and Wet Vets $200. Thank you once again for your generous contributions. Brian Machin President Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch

Re: Warning about NBN scam

I want to thank Helen Evans for her letter in GC&M News, August 1, warning about an NBN scam. Ms Evans draws attention to an increasingly common scam in our region which residents should be aware of. I have contacted NBN Co to ask about this scam and they have confirmed to me that NBN Co does not make unsolicited calls and does not sell broadband services direct to consumers at all. Although there are times when NBN Co may contact residents directly as part of their network rollout

I consider myself a fairly moderate person but I was shocked to turn on the television this week and see the unions saying they’re heading into our high schools to recruit our kids. I understand the need for unions in our society to protect workers’ rights, but to allow them to walk into our schools and peddle their extreme views to impressionable kids is confronting and should be seen as intrusive and not to be tolerated. Schools should be politics-free zones where kids are, to a degree, protected from people who shove their views onto others. There’s opportunity enough for them to learn about the role of both business and unions in subjects like history and economics. Our children already have to grow up far too quickly so the longer we can give them time to enjoy their childhood the better. Olive Hockings Maleny

Thanks, Don

It is a special week for us at the Maleny Bowls Club, in that one of our very respected volunteers and bar staff moves to the front of the bar and enjoys the relaxed part of Maleny Bowls Club life. It would be impossible to list the jobs done or beers poured for the betterment of the club by our continuing member Don Ginns. It is suffice to say Don has been there from the start of our new bar system and redevelopment, where we run on volunteer hours, so for all that you have done, Don, a break is well deserved. Thank you from all of us for everything. Graeme Glover Maleny Bowls Club

Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace

Federal Member for Fisher Meet the Minister for Aged Care

From my conversations with local residents I know that aged care is an important issue for many of us here in the Hinterland. I have therefore invited the Federal Minister for Aged Care, Ken Wyatt, to visit the Sunshine Coast to speak to older residents and their families at the ‘Senior Care and Lifestyle Expo’ in Caloundra on Friday August 17. The Expo is a fantastic place to find out what you need to know to be well prepared when making decisions related to your needs in terms of accommodation, services and support. It is also a great place to get ideas for how to live a more active lifestyle, and how to maximise your physical and mental health. Minister Wyatt will be attending the Expo at the Events Centre with me between 10am and 10.45am to present to attendees and to hold a Q&A. I know that many of you have questions for the Minister, and I hope that you will take this opportunity to have those questions answered. While you are there, I would encourage you to explore the rest of the Expo, and see what else is on offer. You can register for the Expo at http:// seniorcareandlifestyleexpo.com/.

Mooloolah Valley leads country in Eating Disorder Treatment

As some of you may have seen, I recently announced a new grant of $1.5 million from the Turnbull Government, which will allow local charity EndED and the Butterfly Foundation to build the first ever residential treatment facility for eating disorders in Australia, right here in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. At the moment, people suffering from an eating disorder who need residential care have to go to secure psychiatric units, which are not ideal environments for this type of recovery. EndED Butterfly House will specialise solely in the treatment of eating disorders, and will provide a peaceful, homely environment, on a spectacular property set in the heart of Mooloolah Valley. It will be a true pioneer in how these devastating conditions are treated in our country, providing round the clock care and support, and spaces for recreation, family therapy and group therapy. Alongside the $3.2 million Federal eating disorder treatment pilot already underway here on the Sunshine Coast, this facility will prove yet again how, with the Turnbull Government’s support, the Coast is leading Australia in ways we would not have imagined even five years ago. When these projects are up and running, we should be able to export the lessons we learn from the Sunshine Coast all over the country. EndED founder Mark Forbes has been working incredibly hard on his vision for this facility for many years and I could not be happier to know that the government has provided the extra funding needed to get construction underway.

Mobile Offices are coming to a town

near you! Next week I will be holding another lot of mobile offices in the electorate. My last tour at the end of June took in Upper Caboolture, Rocksberg/ Moorina, Ocean View, Mt Mee, Wamuran, D'Aguilar, Delaneys Creek, Woodford and Elimbah. This time round, I will be visiting Glass House Mountains, Peachester, Beerwah and Beerburrum on Tuesday August 7, Montville, Flaxton, Eudlo and Mooloolah Valley on Wednesday August 8 and Maleny, Conondale and Witta on Friday August 9. Come and have a chat to me about any State Government issues that are on your mind. I'm always keen to speak to my constituents in their own areas, which is why I hold these mobile offices, so that no one feels like they have to come all the way out to my office in Maleny.

Scouts Queensland

Earlier in the month, I had the great pleasure of being presented with a supporter's scarf from Scouts Queensland – I was literally “scarfed up” by ‘Dingo’, ‘Tawny’ and ‘Roo’ in my electorate office. Wednesday August 1 also happened to be ‘Scout Scarf Day’, when all active and former scouts are requested to wear their scout scarfs in public to make the ‘Spirit of Scouting’ visible: Once a Scout – Always a Scout! Considering that I wasn’t a Scout as a child, being named a supporter, given a scarf and being encouraged to wear it on ‘Scout Scarf Day’ was an enormous honour. Thank you to Scouting Queensland for all that you do for our community.

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Mooloolah Recreational Park

It is great to see that the footpath is completed. The next project will be the play equipment. I appreciate any support to keep vigilant to protect our new facilities and what the community has worked so hard to achieve. Council is scheduling works to replace sections of deteriorated pathway along King Road, Mooloolah. The pathway along King Road will be upgraded to 2m wide. This is one of many projects funded through council’s $370 million Capital Works Program this financial year. The works are scheduled to be undertaken during the Queensland September school holidays and work is now scheduled to start the week beginning September 24. Completion is expected within two weeks (weather dependent). Congratulations Mooloolah State School on your great fundraiser – the Mooloolah Rodeo. The Chinese students I had with me on the evening thoroughly enjoyed it and then enjoyed their train ride back to Nambour! There will not be an informal breakfast meeting in September. Hope to see you in October.

Get ready for Moofest

Moofest returns next month, hosting an affordable family friendly music festival in Mooloolah. This year’s event will be combined with kids’ zones jam packed with fun activities for both families and youth. Mark it in your diary now and head out to Moofest at the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve and Pony Club on Saturday September 15.

Celebrate Seniors Week

With everything from morning teas to Queensland Ballet dance workshops there is something to suit everyone during Seniors Week from August 1826. In recognition of the contribution our seniors make, Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with the network to highlight Seniors Week activities and events. Head to council’s website to download a Seniors Week brochure and to find out more.

We’re a bit spoilt here in Glass House. We have a number of wonderful regional shows that are held before the Ekka opens, but we’re also close enough to Brisbane to be able to head down to the Ekka as well. The LNP, as always, will have a stall at the Ekka for the entire show. I will be at the stall on Thursday August 16, so if you’re heading down to the show on that day, pop in and say hello! Healthy ageing morning tea

Watch your mouth It’s Dental Health Week this week and the Australian Dental Association (ADA) is reminding everyone to ‘watch your mouth’. Dr Hugo Sachs, ADA President, said Dental Health Week is an opportunity for people to take a look and learn more about why a healthy mouth is so important. “Good oral health is vital to good overall health, so watching your mouth will help maintain your general wellbeing. Watching your mouth means: brushing and flossing, eating a healthy diet, lowering our sugar and alcohol intake, stopping smoking and seeing your dentist for regular check-ups. These good habits will greatly reduce the risk of oral disease,” said Dr Sachs. Four tips for good oral health: • Brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste • Clean in between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes • Eat a healthy diet, limit sugary foods and drinks • Visit your dentist regularly For more on Dental Health Week, check out: www.dentalhealthweek.com.au.

A network of Sunshine Coast services and Organisations that are committed to the health and wellbeing of seniors will host a special morning tea event as part of the upcoming Senior’s Week celebration. The event is for all seniors loving and living a healthy and active life on the Sunshine Coast and will include entertainment and activities such as a Garden Expo, belly dancers, tap dancers, live music, as well as ukulele and Tai Chi demonstrations. The celebration will be held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre, 114 Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina on Wednesday August 22 from 9.30am to 1pm. Cost to attend is $12.50. Oinking good time

Mark your diaries for Sunday August 19 when Landsborough Hotel once again hosts their awesome annual Family Fun Day and charity pig races event. Now in its sixth year, this hugely popular event has raised over $25,000 for local charities and promises to be another ‘oinking good time’. With proceeds supporting Landsborough State School P&C Association, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Bee Gees United Soccer Club and The Lions Club of Beerwah this is both a great day out and an awesome local charity fundraiser. The stars of the day are undoubtedly the super cute piglets supplied by Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs with the first race commencing 1pm. The day will also feature some great raffles, music, Calcutta, face painting and baby animal farm. Brisbane Warrigals Indigenous Football Club will also be running a barbeque to raise funds to play in the 2018 National Indigenous Football competition. For more details, call 5494 1001.

Who stole the night?

While movies and traditional tales use darkness to symbolise the unknown and scary, our ancestors may well have had good reason to be afraid of the dark. Nowadays our well-lit cities present a new concern as we are now at risk of losing the dark of night. Join Astronomer Professor Nick Lomb for an entertaining discussion at the Mary Cairncross Theatrette Maleny on Thursday August 16 from 3pm until 4.30pm. Come along to the free talk, ‘Lights out for nature’, as Professor Lomb discusses some of the implications of losing the night sky including stars lost to light pollution and the impact on the health of flora and fauna. Professor Lomb was a curator at Sydney Observatory from 1979 to 2010. Since 2010 he has worked as a consultant astronomer at the Observatory and Sydney Powerhouse Museum and the discussion promises to be entertaining and informative. It’s a free event, however bookings are essential via https://events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Event?eventID=15750. For further information, contact Julie 0412 789 957.

A 50-year-old woman has lost her job and her home – and her husband is asking for a divorce. Oh, and she's menopausal. And her daughter announces she's pregnant, so soon she'll be a granny. Added to all that, her two adult daughters still need a strong supportive mother. Does this sound like the basis for a comedy? Well, in the hands of director Blandine Lenoir, it becomes not only a comedy but a charming, warm-hearted and thoughtful insight into a woman who rebels against being relegated to the margins of society. Aurore (Agnes Jauoi) carries off this role superbly, subtly exploring issues rarely dealt with on the screen – such as the resilience and value of older womanhood. These are issues to which many people can readily relate. This 2017 French romantic comedy, while dealing with ageism and sexual discrimination, doesn't shy away from the idea that many women of a certain age feel that their lives and their futures have been mapped out for them by others. For Aurore, this inevitability changes when she accidentally bumps into the man she was in love with at 18. Could this be Aurore's opportunity to challenge society's predetermined expectations for her? Or a chance to repeat past mistakes? When: Saturday August 11 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Dinner from 6pm to 7pm catered by Wild Rocket, tea/ coffee and homemade slice stand, and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm, running time 89 mins, Rating M Cost: Tickets available for members at Maleny Information Centre, $8, or on our website malenyfilmsociety.info. Contributed by Patricia Bradford For the June meeting, thank you to Jeff and Rob for inviting us to your lovely home and garden. A couple of members wanted to know what one of the flowering shrubs was on display. It was nutmeg bush, Moschosma (Iboza riparia). Mine flowers in July. Rob Morris demonstrated a funnel he had made from a large-necked plastic bottle. Competition bench results for June: First, Pam Innes, 21 points; second, Trish Bradford, 15 points. We would like to encourage more members to enter the competition. Even if you don't win, you score one point for each entry. Members spent an enjoyable time wandering around the large garden, admiring and identifying plants. The hanging baskets full of trailing petunias were eyecatching. The homemade soup was delicious and enjoyed by all. Our next meeting is Thursday August 16, 9.30am, at the Peachester Hall. Visitors and new members welcome. For more information, phone 5496 9169.

Creating viable soil

Vivid and bountiful gardens are built from the ground up. Soil that is rich, dense and full of nutrition is the key. Join Pia Dowling, author of 'Common Scents Organic Gardening' at the Beerwah Library on Saturday, August 18 from 10am-11.30am as she discusses how to turn your garden into a haven for plants. Learn which microbes and minerals make up good soil and how to manage some of the common problems that impact on quality. This session delves deep into the chemical make-up of soil and gives you a close look at what's really going on under the ground. Attendance is free, however registration is essential. From the churches God’s word has such positive instruction to live life by; it’s a manual about life, death and eternity. Life at times can be really challenging, and we never know what life can bring our way. Many were amused at Forrest Gump’s take on life by quoting his mother, “My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.” We chuckle and in essence it’s true. Right through the Bible we read of men and women that faced adversity and difficult situations in life but lived great effective lives. One chapter in the book of Hebrews, chapter 11, gives a list of men and women like that, who lived their lives when facing adversity and the difficult situations of life with a faith in God. The Apostle Paul gives a great key to facing life in Phil 3:13 and 14: “One thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Jesus said in Luke’s gospel that there are two ways to face life, with faith or with fear. Baptism at Uniting Church

Jenny and Shannon Ward of Beerburrum together with relatives and friends from near and far joined the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church congregation on Sunday July 22 for the baptism of their very cute daughter Elyssa Leigh Anne. During her baptism Elyssa was very interested in the little birds that were nestling in the church floral arrangement. Diane Gudgeon, one of the UC Playgroup leaders, was the Elder for Elyssa, presenting her with a baptismal candle named in her honour.

21:26-28: “People fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken… Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” In verse 26, those without a relationship with God face the future in fear. In verse 28, those with a relationship with God face the future with faith. 1Jn 5:4-5: “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” What a great message! We too can face the future with faith. By being born of God, by receiving Jesus as our personal Lord and Saviour, we join the millions the world over who face the uncertainty of the future not in fear but with a faith in an awesome God.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, August 1: Ladies Pennant Division 3 round 1 home to Kilcoy. A great start for our ladies who ran out winners 40-34. Rae Farrell’s rink had a loss but Chris Freshwater’s rink was strong and got our club over the line for a win. At 4.30pm we had a play off between some of our juniors to represent our club and district in the Secondary School Cup 2018 to be held at Pine Rivers on August 29 and 30. We had a pairs team of Everret Evans and Chloe Runge who defeated Jeffrey Parks and Jack Murphy 22-3 in 9 ends of three bowl pairs. Only one pairing per district can go through. Well done to all the kids. Friday, July 27: Ladies Pennant Division 3, round 2 away against Kilcoy. Well much like round 1 on Wednesday our ladies won a rink each with Chris Freshwater’s side again winning with our ladies getting up 38-32. Saturday, August 4: Men Pennant Round 5 – Division 2 away to Solander Lake. The home side were too good for our boys winning on all three rinks, no wonder they are top if the table. Our last game is at home against Bongaree, let’s hope we can finish with a win. Division 4 away to Caboolture Lakes. What a ripper of a game. Rob Scullion’s rink got up by two but Tumbo’s rink went down by three with the final score 41-40, so close. This week’s game is home to Kilcoy. Division 5 away to Woodford. Another close contest but both our teams went down by three shots to lose 36-30. This week’s game in home to Narangba. Our AGM will be held Saturday, September 8, 10am at Club Glass House. Be great if we could get some more people who are willing to help out. Nomination forms are available at the bowls club. Surely there are a few members willing to help out. The current board have had an extremely busy year and plans are already underway for next year. This Sunday is the Police bowls day – the Iona Challenge. The cost is $12.00 with a 1pm approx. start time.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Brenda Briese This past week has been quite busy with the addition of our Invitation Day held on Tuesday July 31. This is an annual event where we invite players from other clubs to enjoy our beautiful course. The format is a Four Ball Best Ball played in two combined handicap divisions. There were 88 ladies (44 pairs) and the day went very well, and was followed by a delicious lunch. The day was generously sponsored by Cheryl Peut, thank you very much! Firstly back to Saturday July 28: We played a Stableford with a field of 22 players, the winner was Cathy Stone 40pts, runner up was Brenda Briese on 33pts OCB. NTPs: 5 and 16 – Jo Malone and 18 (second shot) – Sue Woolway. BRD went to 30pts. Tuesday, July 31 was a Four Ball Best Ball Stableford. Winners of Division 1 were Liz Donaldson and Sharon Phillips 42pts, 1st runners up were Mavis Brimelow and Michelle Wormwell 41pts OCB from 2nd runners up Di Dancer and Carol Lomaranto. Division 2 Winners: Kathy Moffat and Jean Ward on 44pts, 1st runners up were J Rayfield and S Hardy 43pts OCB from 2nd runners up Robyn Ryan and Lea Garner. NTPs: 5 Hope Hannah and Sue Williamson. 5 Jo Malone and Leanne Gyther. 16 C Lemon and C Devine. 18 Carolyn Chestnut and Di Passier. BRD went to 40pts. Thursday August 2 was Monthly Medal. A Grade winner was Cathy Stone 73 nett, runner up Sonia Kenway 74 nett. B Grade winner was Pam Marsden 69 nett, runner up was Lesley Eggleston 73 nett. C Grade winner was Janelle Balfe 72 nett, runner up Oriel Lyon 75 nett. Gross winners were A Grade – Jo Malone 78, B Grade – Val Turner 93 and C Grade Kathy Moffat 107. NTPs: 2 and 18 (second shot) Pam Marsden, 5 – Fay Barry, 16 – Oriel Lyon. Putting – Pam Marsden 26 putts. BRD went to 76 nett. Wow! Pam Marsden had one of "those" days, winning with a great score, two pin shots and the putting. Well done, Pam.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Steven Jeffery Beerwah State High School recently held its annual Athletics Carnival after being washed out last term. There were some outstandingly talented students giving their best as they threw, ran and jumped their way to victory. The Colour Run was also very popular with students being saturated in iridescent powder from head to toe. A total of 130 Beerwah students will make up the team to compete at the Coastal District Athletics Championships on August 10 and 13. The aim is to regain the District Trophy after being relegated to second behind Chancellor State College the last three years.

Leading the team will be our Age Champions: 12 Yrs, Amali K and Jack H; 13 Yrs, Baylee M and Caleb B; 14 Yrs, Imogen H and Jordy W; 15 Yrs, Boni G and Nicholas H; 16 Yrs, Breanne H and James P; and Open, Kirrah C and Ryan H.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Scroungers has been well supported and we have seen some very interesting tussles as the new competition starts to warm up. Good to see some new faces join the winners’ circle. Dave E has cracked that win and here is hoping it will continue. Judith had a break from bar volunteering to join the winners’ circle. Thanks to our interstate visitors for coming to the club for a game and a roll. Wednesday evening’s competition continues to amaze. What great support for our program. It was no luck in winning by the Tutors, they did a repeat and are now on a roll. The Handels had a hard game, as it is tough to not lose interest when you are so far ahead. One member left and another bowled six bowls to keep the flow. We saw a couple of really close games with a

few folk finding it hard in the cooler weather. Paul Kemp hasn't had a toucher for at least five weeks. Possibly the changing team puts him under pressure to maintain his earlier impressive form. Tony Yorkston had to play well to make up for his missing team member Steve Porter who has proven to be mister reliable for the ‘Mighty Ten’ team. The High School program commenced this week, which was great to see. Brett G and staff from Maleny Primary started primary school bowls with an enthusiastic group from Maleny State School. Well done all. Next week we have teams visiting Mapleton and Kilcoy. Thanks to those members for making this effort to help us meet our commitment. Check the notice board for club championship game deadlines.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker The Sugar Festival was played in Nambour on Wednesday, Thursday and half of Friday. It is played annually. Players form doubles teams which change daily. It is a wonderful tournament for players who are in the lower divisions to develop their skills because they are paired up with a more experienced player who can give them advice on the lawn. This year Val and Vince Carbery and Nick Cram participated. Saturday saw the Bray team in action at home. The Range fielded Sarah Widin, Frances Harper and Robert Elliot. Caloundra, our opponents, consisted of Shirley Boland and Delphine Willems. In the singles competition Sarah beat Shirley 15-5 and Frances beat Delphine 11-8. The doubles saw a reversal of fortunes with Sarah and Robert succumbing to Shirley and Delphine 8-10. It was a good, well fought round with The Range getting up 2 games to 1, scoring 34 hoops to 23. The Queensland second division championships were played at Graceville Club in Brisbane on the

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

weekend. Ken and Donna both played in beautiful conditions and enjoyed the experience. Ken, with a good slice of luck, managed to win 4 games of 5 and was equal first on games but runner up on a countback to Greg Kerswell from Merthyr. Val Carbery made a welcome return to the Lochwood competition on Wednesday. She paired up with Nick in the doubles to win the day in a balanced competition. The score in the doubles was 17-11 to Maleny. We played Nambour. They fielded Theo Kleiberg and Bill Habner. Ken defeated Theo 16-12 in a scrappy game on lawn 1 and Nick went down 11-17 on lawn 2 in the singles, so it was critically important to gain the victory. Well done Nick and Val for strength under pressure. Once again, a good hard-fought round. The Range wins 2 games to 1 scoring 44 hoops to 40. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Frawley Although Kawana Kool Kats were clearly the winners of the day, Witta Wagtails fought all the way. Despite the loss to the Kool Kats, the competition and tennis between the two teams was very enjoyable. Witta Whistlers expected a strong challenge today from the Maroochy Meteors, and were pleasantly surprised with a win. It was close going into the last two sets with only three games the difference, so we had to tough it out! Well done team of Liz, Brenda, Donna and Maree. We all enjoyed a great day of tennis in lovely playing conditions. The Wildcats travelled to Maroochydore to compete against the Friday Flyers. It was very close all day with only a game separating the teams the entire day. And that’s how it ended up, one game the difference. Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Jenie won the sets 5-3, but in Friday tennis it’s all about the games. That one game 37-38 gave the Flyers the win. Date Claimer: Saturday, August 18 club tournament – details to follow. Social tennis is on Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au

A lost dog in the jungle

4

A lost dog strays into a jungle. A lion sees this from a distance and says with caution, "This guy looks edible, never seen his kind before.” So the lion starts rushing towards the dog with menace. The dog notices and starts to panic but as he's about to run he sees some bones next to him and gets an idea and says loudly, "Mmm... that was some good lion meat!" The lion abruptly stops and says, "Woah! This guy seems tougher then he looks, I better leave while I can."

Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 The Solar Eclipse New Moon this weekend brightly underscores romance, creative projects, children’s activities and your own personal hobby. Reserve this weekend for relaxation and play. Minor disagreements can occur but don’t let insecurities stand in the way of resolving these now. Mars retrograde means do revise/revisit handyman jobs. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 A very weird weekend awaits you, signalling a fresh start in home affairs, redecoration, or new additions. This would suit Mercury retrograde, as you could review and revise spending monies to recreate an internal new standard of living. Mars in Capricorn next week, helped by Mercury retrograde, sees you using your muscles in redecoration. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 The New Moon this weekend speeds up the flow of information, brings ideas about travel, and even your correspondence picks up too. Much needed information is available, but just be prepared for alterations and delays under Mercury Retrograde. As Mars backtracks into Capricorn, and Uranus is retrograde, this may be the time to repair plumbing. CANCER June 24 – July 22 A social situation may become awkward as there is a New Moon in Leo and a drama takes place with Uranus retrograding. So, the weekend sees the New Moon in Leo, bringing things to a head regarding financial activities. After the weekend the Virgo Moon brings supportive energies to your partner, and Mars enhances your career.

Week Beginning 08/08/18

Over by the tree top, a monkey witnessed everything. Evidently, the monkey realises that he can benefit from this situation by telling the lion and getting something in return. So the monkey proceeds to tell the lion what really happened and the lion says angrily, "Get on my back, we'll get him together." So they start rushing back to the dog. The dog sees them and realises what’s happened and starts to panic even more. He then gets another idea and shouts, "Where the hell is that monkey?! I told him to bring me another lion an hour ago..."

with Edgar J. Winter www.astroclairvoyant.com

LEO July 23 – August 22 The New Moon in your sign this weekend beams a wonderful spotlight on you and you have your best ability to deal with things with your unique personal touch. Under the return of Mars to Capricorn, you find yourself backtracking or reviewing what has been achieved in the past month. Friends make a shaky move bringing unexpected results. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The New Moon has a Solar Eclipse in Leo, offering you seeds of golden opportunities. So, pay attention to your dreams and follow your intuition. You will even find your inner artist coming out. What is revealed is your authentic evolutionary path. The Moon in your sign for Monday makes you more industrious than usual. Check your calendar. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This New Moon eclipse spotlights your social and love life. It could find you, with retrograde Mars, returning to a home project or domestic issue requiring additional attention. That can be resolved over the next two weeks and best by the end of the month. Uranus retrograde shows health matters become unpredictable. Resolve tensions! SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This Solar eclipse New Moon is testing against your ambition or your new life directions. Take the pressure off yourself and retain your classic self control. Mars retrogrades back into Capricorn and that suits your ability to tackle normal daily routine. Working for a cause means you could stumble into a lucky break. Secret endeavours succeed.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Most aspects of your personal freedom will shine under the New Moon eclipse in Leo. Anything old is made new again, or there’s a fresh start, with long term potential success. There is an emphasis on paying your dues and bringing accounts up to date. For two weeks, it’s a time for review, rather than moving forward. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The weekend sees Mars retrograding back into Capricorn which will power you up all next week to focus on an old goal or previous venture. It will also energise you physically, so use that for your muchneeded exercise. With the New Moon in Leo the weekend provides clues to finding the golden energy in money or intimate affairs. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Uranus retrograding back into Taurus unsettles some of the old home and family concerns, however, with Venus entering Libra there are happy relationships. The New Moon in Leo puts your relationship into a sharp focus with many opportunities to advance harmoniously together. There is a brief two week period of frustrations to manage. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The New Moon triggers an inner search for answers regarding a shared money matter, or an intimate discussion of investment strategies. With retrograde Mars re-entering Capricorn in your sector of friendships, and the Moon in Virgo highlighting primary relationships, it is a positive fruitful and productive week ahead. Express your emotions.
