ome of you might remember that not so long ago Brownie suggested that GC&M News should have a page 3 girl – which was very quickly ruled out at our staff meeting. However, this time around he reckons his latest idea is a total winner and will keep lots of our readers happy. Yes, after a decade long break, Brownie is keen to reintroduce ‘Footie Tipping’ into GC&M News. If you reckon this is a good idea you might want to check out his story on page 9 explaining how we are going to be organising it for the 2017 season. I figure that there are plenty of local ladies as well as the fellas who will want to get involved. I will definitely not be participating, as it could all just be a little humiliating with my absolute lack of footie knowledge, but I encourage those of you who love your footie to give it a crack.
Celebrate Library Lovers Day with chocolate cupcakes. Join Lorinda from Ideas in Icing for an introduction to creative decorating and cupcake designs. The presenter uses sugar paste and butter cream icing. 10.00am to 11.00am at Maleny Library and 2.00pm to 3.00pm at Beerwah Library. Free workshops, but bookings are essential either online at Sunshine Coast Libraries or call them on 5475 8989.
Thought about trying Maleny Scottish dancing? Tonight is the first evening back for the classes which are held at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Cedar Street at 7.00pm. Newcomers are welcome and the first night is free. For more details

Local News OP 1 student takes on the world Beerwah State High School staff and students wish to congratulate Jacquie Omnet on her amazing achievements in her 2016 senior year.
Jacquie was awarded top student in year 12 for English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths B and Maths C. She received a Pinnacle Award that recognised her outstanding effort in achieving an academic award in each year of high school, so it was no surprise when she was announced as the Senior Dux. Jacquie received an OP 1 and has accepted an offer to study a Bachelor of Maths and Physics at University of Queensland, already with intent to complete the Honours program. The University of Queensland has recognised Jacquie’s potential and have awarded her a Chancellor’s Scholarship to the value of $60,000 as well as inviting her to be a part of the Advanced Study Program in Science (ASPinS) an exclusive program that is only offered to the very best. Being a part of this program opens up a world of opportunity for Jacquie – access to world class laboratories and research groups, weekly 'Careers in Science Research' seminars from world class research scientists providing opportunities to network with other high achieving students and professional mentors as well as encouraging professional development.
Hinterland Accounting Services Jacquie said, “Research is where I want to end up, but it can be a tough field to break into. Participating in the ASPinS program will give me experience in real-world research before I even finish my degree, meaning I'll have an edge when it comes to competition and will have gained valuable networks. “The research component of ASPinS will give me insight into what all the little subject areas within Maths and Physics entail and will guide me to areas I'm truly passionate about.” Senior School Deputy Principal Tanya Hayden said the school is also very proud of the outgoing Year 12 cohort from 2016 and she acknowledges that 80% of students who sat the Core Skills test were in the 1 -15 range and 93% of students received their Queensland Certificate of Education. “Many Year 12 students also took advantage of the certificate courses and flexible learning pathways on offer with 160 students awarded a Cert 1, 63 awarded a Cert II and 35 awarded a Cert III,” she said. “We wish Jacquie and all of our 2016 Year 12 students the very best in their future endeavours.”

Volunteers are being sought to help with the recently opened Beersheba Living Museum and assist as non-riding members in the role of safety officers. New troop riders are also welcome. Affiliated with the Australian Light Horse Association, the volunteer association has members from all walks of life who come together to demonstrate Australian Light Horse skills and dress in a historical context at parades and public events. Lee Dominick, Secretary of the troop, explained that there are a number of different roles available for interested people. Volunteer positions exist for those with an interest in museums and administration, the safety officer roles suit people who may have a love of horses but don’t wish to ride, and there are positions for additional riders with an interest in the ethos of military re-enactment. People with an interest in collating and displaying memorabilia, general or military history buffs, or even those who can help out with events or general administration are encouraged to get involved. The 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop has standing policy of not sending out horses and their riders to events without a dedicated safety officer on the ground. This role would suit someone who is disciplined and comfortable around horses as well as comfortable handling
military equipment and who can remain mindful at all times of the safety of the riding member and the general public. Additional riding members are also encouraged to consider a role with the troop. On significant event days such as Anzac Day, the troop services three different locations around the Hinterland. Additional horses and riders would therefore allow a greater presence at each event, which would enhance the reflective symbolism that the re-enactment troop strives to achieve. Interested riders can also lease uniforms, equipment and kit from the troop if required. Training days are held on the second Saturday of every month at Parklands Drive, North Maleny from 9.00am onwards – with step off at 9.30am. If you would like to find out more, please contact Lee on 0413 122 743 or visit their Facebook page or the Australian Light Horse Association page for more details.

Should users pay to swim at Gardners Falls? The recent report of a platypus being harassed and dying at Gardners Falls has sparked outrage amongst locals at the lack of respect that some people are displaying. One Booroobin local, Hannah Bruzova, has had enough. On the ‘Maleny and Surrounds Chit-Chat’ Facebook page she described how she “went to Gardners Falls on Sunday and saw hoards of people bringing in eskies of alcohol - getting drunk, behaving like yobbos, littering, creating disturbance and generally disrespecting the peace and tranquillity of such a location. Then I saw the paint all over the rocks, remembered a platypus had been tormented to death and started a petition. I believe Gardners Falls needs a cover charge of $2 to be put back into the park. On Sunday $1000 could have been raised! This would pay for staff to monitor and help preserve this beautiful place that is slowly being wrecked by drongos.” In exasperation, Hannah has created an online petition (www.petitions24.com/clean_up_ gardeners_trash) for people to sign who want to see a change in behaviour at the much-loved swimming hole. Although it is unclear which organisation is being petitioned, the petition itself calls for staff on weekends to patrol the locality. At the time of going to print, the petition had attracted 77 signatures, with the Facebook post also generating a considerable level of passionate discourse. All commentators deplored the disrespectful behaviour exhibited at the site by what was
identified as a “minority” of park users. Julie Glassop writes, “I don’t bother taking the kids there anymore with all the drunken idiots there being noisy, littering and behaving dangerously.” But the call for charging an entry fee was not unanimously supported. Janey Deg disagrees with the fee idea: “I don’t like the idea of paying to go to a public place. Especially nature. I don’t think the onus should be on the public. I don’t want to pay $10 to take my kids for a 5 minute swim because lowlife scum made a mess of the place. Raise the money to fix it by fining every jerk there who litters, brings a dog, causes a nuisance.” Local Council representative Cr Jenny McKay is also troubled by the behaviour. “I was concerned to receive reports that some visitors to Gardners Falls have been engaging in anti-social behaviour and may have injured or killed wildlife in the area,” she said. “Council will work with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to investigate any reports of people harming or endangering wildlife – and penalties can apply. “While we all appreciate how beautiful this spot is, particularly in this hot weather, I encourage all visitors to ensure it remains that way for others – don’t destroy what you came to enjoy.” We asked Sunshine Coast Council what they’re doing about the problem. A council spokesperson said that in recent times it appears that some visitors to the falls have been engaging in anti-social behaviour.

“Council conducts regular visits to the area to undertake clearing of litter in and around the car park and creek area,” they continued. “During normal business hours council’s community response officers will respond to complaints from the public that relate to local law issues including dogs and littering. “Council is investigating options for additional signage and management of the area.” It appears that their regular visits haven’t resulted in any problems being noted. “No infringements have been issued for breaches of local laws at Gardners Falls in the last two years,” responded the spokesperson. “Anti-social behaviour and prohibited activity must be reported to the police.” Maleny Police confirmed that they do undertake regular random patrols and random breath testing through the area, which increase in frequency during weekend and holiday peak periods.

Over 80 people and 33 fire fighting vehicles, heavy machinery and helicopters were brought to bear on last Tuesday’s 120 hectare fire at Bells Creek in order to protect native vegetation, pine plantations that provide significant regional employment and to ensure the fire did not reach local communities. HQPlantations, QFES and National Parks personnel were quick to the scene after the fire was detected just before 3.00pm. The fire was quickly brought under control due to the rapid initial response and coordination by all agencies. The area was ‘blacked out’ and containment lines were maintained throughout the night and into Wednesday to ensure there was no risk of re-ignition. The fire started on the verge of the Bruce Highway just north of the Bells Creek interchange and quickly moved through private property, national

Rural Fire Service warning With the current weather conditions expected to continue throughout the month of February and with the recent bushfires at Coolum and Roys Road / Bruce Highway, the local Rural Fire Service are asking people to be ever more vigilant and get their bushfire survival plan in place. Glasshouse Mountains Rural Fire Brigade’s Volunteer Community Educator Gavin Stewart said, “With bushfire activity already ramping up across the South East, our firefighters could release a warning which may require you and your family to enact your bushfire survival plan. It’s essential that these plans are finalised and known by all family members. “Your plan must be written down, practiced regularly and should take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in your house including children and elderly residents. “A bushfire survival plan needs to take into account what decisions will be made based on the Fire Danger Ratings and under what
conditions you will stay (if any) and when it would be best to leave well in advance of a fire – leaving early is the safest option!” When you go to the Rural Fire Service website they have a really simple template that you can use to create your ‘Bushfire Survival Plan’. It includes items such as listing the name and contact details for your insurance company, gas company, Internet, neighbours, electricity, council, work, and other important details. It also suggests listing the details of who will be leaving early (including their pets) and their contact details. When will they go? Where will they go? What will they take? E.g. their Bushfire Evacuation Kit. And what is the plan for livestock and pets? To learn more about bushfire planning check out the website: www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au

Another great Christmas Tree Festival Contributed by Murray Robertson The Christmas Tree Festival held at the Maleny Uniting Church was an outstanding success, with widespread support from many groups and organisations in the area and attendances well up on previous years. As a result of the event, Uniting Church Minister Rev Catherine Solomon and committee representative Malcolm Baker presented a cheque for $1,700.00 to the Hospital Auxiliary at their January meeting. The funds were raised from visitors' donations and the sale of trees. Auxiliary President Val Bridges said that the funds will be put towards the purchase of a specially designed bed. These beds are expensive – $13,000.00 – and are designed for patient comfort, especially those in long term or palliative care. Val said that the long-term project for the Auxiliary was to provide as many of these beds as possible. Val thanked the committee for its outstanding work in setting up the festival again this year, and for making a financial contribution to the Maleny Hospital. Rev Solomon added her thanks to the tree contributors and the Hospital Auxiliary members, and said that Maleny Uniting Church will continue to work in partnership with groups like the Hospital Auxiliary as part of the church’s community connections programs.
The 2016 theme was Christmas Around the World. First time contributors Maleny Guides decorated their tree with a Canadian theme. The group was studying Canada as part of the program, and they obtained decorations and ideas from Canadian Guides. The children enjoyed the moving train set, the walk-in manger scene, and the quiz questions to find answers from the trees. And let's not forget a candy cane along the way, and the gift of a book from well-known Maleny author Jill Morris, who had donated a supply of her books. These were under the Probus Club tree, promoting Christmas in the South Pacific, and it was a very generous gesture. Don’t miss next year’s festival: it is well worth a visit!

Calling all Rugby League tipsters IT’S BACK! It’s been ten years since we ran the last rugby league footy tipping competition through the paper and we thought it was time to kick it off again. Well, actually it was as a result of some ‘gentle’ prodding from Andrew Powell (Member for Glass House and rumoured footy tipping master). Andrew’s concept was a good one … a ‘celebrity’ tipping competition where local businesses compete against each other (for a fee of course) to be crowned the NRL Footy Tipping King and All-Round Legend (and win exclusive access to all the bragging rights that come with it). Then all the proceeds … yes the entire amount, nothing gets skimmed off ... will be donated to the Beerwah Bulldogs Junior Rugby League for them to use to purchase safety and injury treatment equipment and supplies. Did you know that it costs the Juniors over $1,000 each year just for strapping alone? In honour of Andrew’s stellar suggestion, we’ve dubbed the inaugural celebrity tipping competition 'Punt the Pollie'. Places are limited to only twelve business tipsters in the ‘Punt the Pollie’ celebrity tipping competition, with entry being just $250 for the whole NRL season … remember the entire amount will go to help keep the local junior rugby league players safe and hopefully uninjured. Each celebrity tipster will have their own designed tipster's module space featuring their photo, their name, their business contacts, their tips and their score and place in the competition. If you are a business and you’d like to be one of our celebrity tipsters and ‘Punt the Pollie’, contact Glasshouse Country & Maleny News on 5438 7445 or email gbrown@gcnews.com.au … but remember that there are only twelve spots available, so don’t think about it too long. And we haven’t forgotten those most important to us … the readers. Concurrently, we are running a readers NRL tipping competition. To enter go to www.footytips.com.au/comps/gcmnews (you will have to ‘sign in’ to join the competition), then register by using the password GCMNEWS. Then every week you use this website to submit your tips and check on how you’re going against everyone else. Each week we’ll publish the leaders ladder in GC&MNews.

Do you remember 1967? For some 1967 was the time of the Vietnam War, hippy culture and the protest marches. It was also in 1967 that the Australian $50.00 note came into circulation, ‘Bellbird’ the ABC’s popular soap opera began airing on TV, and The Beatles released ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. While these events may have shaped the nation or the international cultural scene locally it was also the year that the Sunshine Coast was named and Frank Nicklin, Member for Landsborough, was Premier of Queensland. To mark this significant milestone event Sunshine Coast Council is making sure that this year is one of celebration. As the township of Landsborough played a vital role in the development of the southern end of the Sunny Coast, it seems appropriate that it should also be at the centre of the celebrations. To ensure that this happens representatives from the Landsborough Museum, Landsborough Memorial Hall, Councillor Rick Baberowski and other community members are combining forces to plan a number of community events in Landsborough to celebrate the 50th anniversary. A number of meetings have been held to get the ball rolling, some of the ideas being shared at the meetings include a rock’n’roll dance at the hall, a new exhibition at the museum, an historic walk and a number of art, craft and fashion competitions. If you are interested in the retro decades of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, or want to contribute your talents in helping the community celebrate this milestone anniversary, which will look back on the past 50 years as well as look forward to the next, give Ana a call on 0407 165 308 or email ana@calcomm.org.au.

Tranquil Park closure causes wedding anxiety Well known Maleny wedding, function and accommodation venue Tranquil Park closed its doors last week. The Mountain View Road facility has been a regular spot where locals and visitors alike held receptions, birthdays, meetings, conferences, events or just went to enjoy the views and the food. Insolvency firm Korda Mentha confirmed that they were appointed administrators of Blandise Pty Ltd (previously trading as Tranquil Park Resort) on December 14. On January 27, the Federal Court ordered the winding up of the company on the application of the Australian Tax Office. The Federal Court appointed Korda Mentha as liquidators of the company. A statement from Korda Mentha said that the liquidation was the trigger for the closure of the resort. Reports suggest a fire and safety inspection found major non-compliance issues throughout the complex, with a Fire Safety Notice being served requiring the problems to be rectified within a certain period of time.
A Korda Mentha spokesperson said that after the liquidation, it was clear the owners could not continue to trade the business and there would be no funds available to complete a renovation, including works required under a Fire Safety Notice. “A plan to sell the business fell through when the potential purchaser failed to produce the initial payment which would have helped pay for fire safety compliance works,” the spokesperson continued. Korda Mentha are contacting all known creditors, including those who have paid deposits, to offer help to apply for recovery of the deposits. “The liquidators are also offering to help find alternative venues for people with bookings. “The former owners and liquidators apologise for the inconvenience to all customers, but the priorities had to be public safety and compliance with their legal obligations as liquidators.” Maleny wedding celebrant Bill Scurry only found out when one of his wedding clients contacted him to say that the venue had closed. Bill posted on his Facebook page that the administrators have told him that there is no
money for refunds. And it seems that there are numerous brides and grooms who have had their dreams for their big day shattered. Stories have come to light of people paying the entire amount for their wedding reception and accommodation within days of the business closing, with what appears like no hope of recouping any of their money. Other local wedding venues have been offering to help any affected wedding parties to organise alternative arrangements. Anyone who has paid money for a booking at Tranquil Park and have not been contacted by Korda Mentha should contact their Brisbane office on 3338 0222.

Contributed by Maggie Walsh On Australia Day a very moving remembrance ceremony honouring our local Indigenous people took place at Maleny RSL. The first ceremony was held four years ago by Ray Barrowclough and it is gratifying to see the numbers attending increase each Australia Day. Ray, along with Bev Hand, presented the history of our local clans encompassing Caboolture, Maleny, Kenilworth, Mapleton and beyond. The ceremony included very moving poetry and powerful songs that reflected the tragedy and loss of the original people. On a brighter note, Bev stressed the importance of moving forward and recognising history and to showing the respect that this precious culture

Audrey and Max Hardy from Beerwah came into the office last week to tell us of the plight of ‘Donald the Duck’. Donald lives in the lake at Woodgrove Estate. Audrey and Max live next door and have ‘adopted’ Donald ever since the others in his flock disappeared. “He waddles over to ours at about 4.30pm in the afternoon and we give him some food,” said Audrey. “I guess he’s lonely and misses the other ducks.” Audrey and Max have no idea where Donald came from originally, but he has become a local identity with the local kids all treating him well. “We’d like it very much if Donald could be found a ‘Daisy’ to keep him company,” said Audrey. Do you know the story behind Donald and how he came to be living in Woodgrove Estate? Let us know … email editorial@gcnews.com.au

Late last year, 14-year-old Beerwah High student Tyler Pearce was awarded Australian Indoor Rowing record holder for his age group. While Tyler competed in the under 16 male category at the Australian Championship on November 27, he smashed the 500m Australian record for the Under 14 category. With over 600 competitors registering for the event, this was only the second competition that Tyler had entered since he started the sport in May of last year. Tyler originally got interested in the sport when his high school teacher and member of the Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club, Wendy Coghill, brought in an indoor rowing machine to school last May. Tyler had a go and just two weeks later he competed in his first competition! With a record already under his belt, Tyler is now looking forward to competing in the Queensland Rowing Championships coming up in May, but his sights are firmly set on beating a world record. Tyler now has his own indoor rowing machine at home which he trains on and he also attends clinics at the Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club once a month.

In Councillor Baberowski’s January column he mentioned that Council had renewed the playground equipment in the QCWA Park at Landsborough. GC&M News dropped by the other day to check it out for ourselves – and it looks great. Sadly we were a little too big to try it out, but the kids will love it, with its bright and funky appearance and different elements to challenge them physically. If you have a little one that might enjoy testing it out, the park is located in Old Landsborough Road, across the road from the Landsborough Hall and next door to the old CWA Hall.

Eyes on the prize and kicking their goals Business feature
Last week Central West District couple Andrew and Kayla Thomas officially become one of the newest resellers of Transportable Shade Sheds for the Bathurst and Orange areas. With their eyes on the prize - already this highly motivated and goal orientated young couple have sold their first Transportable Shade Shed and their enthusiasm to make their business successful is infectious! Both from strong farming backgrounds, the down to earth young couple have worked hard to achieve their goals. Running a ‘small’ 100 acre cattle farm, the recently married couple were finding that their respective job commitments meant that they were never home, and consequently they were finding it challenging to run their cattle farm. With a passion for Bull Riding, Andrew had been working as an interstate truck driver and had been looking for some time for additional business opportunities that would afford him more time at home as well as time to concentrate on breeding bucking stock. Researching business opportunities; the couple were attracted to the Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com business model as it provided an excellent product, everything they needed to launch the business and the added advantage of a cloud based business support and mentoring system. “We looked at a number of opportunities - but it was all the additional support provided by Melissa and the team at Transportable Shade Sheds as well as the access to Saver6.com that convinced us. We thought it was great product but the extra level of personal care from the team and support from the Saver6.com network has been wonderful” says Kayla. Previously Kayla had spent six years at a local law firm followed by three years working at bakery franchise. Committed to her jobs and working long hours away from home – Kayla also experienced firsthand the potential disadvantages of buying into a franchise. What was highlighted to her was that in a franchise situation it could take a long time before you made money and there were a lot of variables that could impact success. This was another reason behind the couples’ decision to own their own well branded business and enjoy a supportive environment without any franchise fees – you can invest in what you expect to get out of it. “We wanted support and training, and with the Saver6.com and Transportable Shade Sheds business model we get all the resources we need to have more family time and time at home while still being able to invest in our families future – all our hard work goes directly back into our business so we see the reward ourselves. I also love that we can run the business together and use our individual strengths to build it up and that we don’t go for days at a time without seeing each other.” explains Kayla. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Bathurst or Orange areas please contact Andrew and Kayla from Central West Shade Sheds and Fencing on 0478 190 559. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss - or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Please contact Andrew and Kayla Thomas, Saver6.com members and Transportable Shade Shed specialists. They are available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

Rare wildlife found in Maleny A Yandina naturalist, photographer, journalist and self-professed ‘wildlife nut’ was chuffed recently when he recorded two elusive and endangered birds in the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Greg Roberts – who blogs about birds via his Sunshine Coast birds webpage (sunshinecoastbirds.blogspot.com.au) – shared what he described as two “good environmental news stories” from a recent field trip to Maleny. While checking out Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with fellow twitcher, Maleny’s Barry Traill (of Pew Charitable Trusts), they came across two uncommon birds – the Sooty Owl, Tyto tenebricosa (listed as ‘Near Threatened’) and the Marbled or Plumed Frogmouth, Podargus ocellatus plumiferus (‘Vulnerable’). He recorded a pair of the Plumed Frogmouths, meaning that breeding may be happening in the reserve. Greg – who rediscovered the Plumed Frogmouth in the Conondale Ranges after some thought it to be extinct – notes that both species have been rarely noted in the Mary Cairncross reserve. “Hopefully these species may become long-term residents of this place as the good news story of habitat rehabilitation in the region continues,” he said. The wetlands on the Maleny Community Precinct also get the thumbs up from Greg and Barry. “It did not take us long to spot a couple of migratory Latham's Snipe,” said Barry. “We saw a Spotless Crake and heard another four or five. We also heard three Lewin's Rails. There are very few records of either of these two cryptic rail species from the Maleny region. “This is a spot to keep an eye on and congratulations to Unitywater and the Sunshine Coast Council for the good work they've done here.”

Lions fund all-terrain wheelchair Following a request from a Maleny resident to help his disabled friend once again enjoy the surf, Zone 12 Chairman Rob Hobson took the request to Lions Clubs in the Zone. The Lions clubs of Maleny Blackall Range, Lake Currimundi/Kawana, Caloundra and Beerwah agreed to raise funds toward the purchase of an all-terrain wheelchair. It was, however, decided that the whole community would be better served, including the disabled man who originally requested a chair, if the wheelchair was given to the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA). The DSA have a close association with the Currimundi Special School and hold regular events with them. The Zone 12 Clubs pledged $2,775.00 toward the total cost of the wheelchair ($5,429.50) with the other half being provided by the Australian Lions Foundation. The wheelchair will be housed and maintained at the Currimundi Special School where it will also be available for use by the school and the DSA at their regular events. The wheelchair was presented to the DSA Sunshine Coast President Tim Byrne at the Currimundi Special School on Thursday, February 2 by Lion Zone Chairman Rob Hobson (Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club), Joyce Peters (President Lake Currimundi/Kawana Lions) and Don McLachlan (President Caloundra Lions Club). The Principal of the Currimundi Special School, Alwyn Green and Deputy Principal Heidi Phillips were also present at the presentation. www.gcnews.com.au

Future options for Maple Street Co-op garden The Maple Street Co-op is currently looking for Expressions of Interest for the space where the Co-op garden currently sits – this 3,000sq m block right in the middle of town has so much potential. The space would be suitable for making things, growing things, or even showing things. The site lends itself to any number of uses: make it a market garden and sell directly to the Co-op; add a shed and you have a distribution centre; why not a ‘tiny house’ display centre? The Co-op is open to any and all ideas compatible with their operating principles. Terms will be negotiable and based on the proposed use. Please send your Expressions of Interest to: The Secretary, Maple Street Co-op, via email secretary@maplestreetco-op.com, drop your written proposal into the Co-op, or call Sammy on 0498 313 068.

Contributed by Janet Kitchin A group of our ladies met at Mary Cairncross Park last Wednesday for morning tea. We had lots of delightful food, mainly homemade cooked goodies to share, and had fun and laughter. This was followed by a guided walk with Owen from the park who is very knowledgeable and had lots of interesting information which we would otherwise have missed. Our next lunch meeting will be on Wednesday, February 15 at the Glass House Sports Club. Our guest speaker will be Blake Mulo of Queensland Rail who is going to talk about train trips available to us. Our club is made up of a group of local ladies who enjoy getting together and having fun whilst raising funds for the Smith Family and the Learning for Life Program. If you are interested in either joining us or coming along to one of our meetings/outings, please ring either Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6056.
Parents Up
From little things, big things grow It is a simple concept, but one which artist Sally Joyce took to a whole new level when she created a stunning mural for what was once a stark white brick wall at the back of the Beerwah Kindergarten. The seed was planted in the Peachester-based mother-of-two’s mind when her eldest son Angus was a student at the kindy three years ago. But it wasn’t until late last year that all of the stars aligned when Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski and Mayor Mark Jamieson dipped into their discretionary funds to co-contribute to bringing the mural to life. Mrs Joyce spent 90 hours over 12 days during the Christmas school holidays creating a life-like garden scene complete with a child watering seedlings, native wildlife, a friendly scarecrow and various fruit and vegetables. The qualified fine artist worked through all kinds of conditions during the painting, from days so hot the house paint she mixed was dry before it hit the wall, to seeking refuge underneath a tarp during a summer storm. Mrs Joyce worked solely with primary colours that she bought from Beerwah Paint Place at a trade price and mixed every colour you can see on the mural, but she said it truly was a labour of love. “I really wanted to create something beautiful for the children,” she said. “It’s very important for young children to have beauty in their lives and that was my goal. “Because it was near the garden, I wanted to tie it in with that setting. “The child watering a seedling represents nurturing young minds at the kindy and a reminder to adults as well that when you water something and give it
love and attention, it will grow.” The mural evolved as Mrs Joyce continued to paint and she decided to add a bee to remind the children that without the bees, there is no garden, and other elements, like the strawberries, after she saw them growing in the vegie garden behind her. “I ate a lot of mint while painting the garden and the actual strawberry that was painted,” she quipped. “My son Angus helped me paint the brown dirt (perfect kid height) and having him work alongside me for a day was a highlight. “It was his idea to add a fly near the frog. The fly is very small as we decided to make it a secret so the children have a little game to search for ‘Gus the Fly’.” Councillor Baberowski was in awe of the mural when he saw the finished product on Thursday morning. “It is fantastic that it has been done so much from the heart and by somebody who knows the kindy,” he said. “I would like to see the medium of murals by local artists encouraged by others in the community as these murals have the ability to enhance our public and private spaces. “My congratulations go to the team who had the passion to do this as it adds another dimension to the total effect of the kindy’s open space.” Beerwah Kindergarten co-director Katie Piva said everyone who saw the mural instantly fell in love with it. “Sally has done a brilliant job,” she said. “We have worked so hard to create a spectacular outdoor area for the kids and this is just the icing on the cake.”

School News Welcome picnic for Peachester Preppies
contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester State School is pleased to welcome all their new families and the new class of 2017 Prep students to their school. As a ‘get to know you’ activity in their first week, Prep teachers Mrs Leone Owen and Margie Jennings invited the Prep / Year 1 class to bring along their favourite teddy for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Students made hot dogs and iced cakes in readiness for their picnic in the school’s forest classroom. Being under the trees and out of the classroom proved to be a winner with the students.
Community paying it forward Mooloolah State School was recently given a cheque for $500.00 from parents of students of the school in a ‘pay it forward’ event. Craig Dickson and his partner Molly, who are the proud parents of two girls who attend the school, recently ‘paid it forward’ with a cheque that was given to them from Bendigo bank in Buderim after they sponsored a prize for Bloomhill Cancer Care. The prize was three nights’ accommodation at their retreat, ‘Alaya Escape’. The prize was won by a volunteer worker of Bloomhill. This worker paid it forward and gave the prize to a patient of Bloomhills who was struggling with cancer and thought they needed the time out. Craig and Molly continued the ‘pay it forward’
Craig Dickson, Adam Poulus and Peter MacDonnell theme and did not want the money from the bank for the guest’s stay and generously donated it to Mooloolah State School. What a wonderful idea to pay it forward! Mooloolah State School would like to thank Craig and Molly of Alaya Escape for their generous support. This money will be used to buy muchneeded books and resources for the school. Thank you also to Bendigo bank in Buderim for their original sponsorship of the prize.

The students enjoyed learning how to give directions to the class code-a-pillar so that he can move and complete tasks. With the help of the two Prep teachers, Mrs Brannigan and Mrs Philpott, the children embraced a new challenge, investigating STEM projects (which stands for (science, technology, engineering and math). Prep students are learning to investigate objects, make comparisons and ask questions. The Preps at Beerwah have all settled into their

Could you be a Beerwah Biker? Beerwah Aqua Aerobics instructor Desley Palmer recently shared her story with GC&M News readers about the value of Aqua Aerobics and she is keen to encourage and support others looking to get a little more exercise in their day. Desley’s plan is to form a group for bike riders to participate in a 10km circuit – with challenges along the way – to improve muscle tone and cardio health, but still designed for all levels of fitness. “I expect a lot of my older clients from Aqua Aerobics will join in, and I have had an offer of a bike storage area if required by clients,” Desley said. “I think we might call ourselves the ‘Beerwah Bikers Association’ just for a little bit of quirky fun. “I am looking at doing this just once a week, on a Tuesday afternoon, leaving either Beerwah Bulldogs at the Beerwah Sportsground or the Beerwah Marketplace car park, depending on the amount of interested riders.

Living - History Coronation stamps
Amongst items in the Bankfoot House collection there is a set of 60 Coronation Souvenir Stamps produced to celebrate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937. Almost eighty years ago, King George VI ascended the throne of the United Kingdom upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, who married American Socialite and divorcee Wallis Simpson. King George’s coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on May 12, 1937 with all the colour and splendour of British tradition. The souvenir stamp set shows a different picture either of a royal figure, a significant building or a royal event such as the trooping of the colour. Pink, green or yellow backgrounds give colour to the sepia pictures. The stamp sets were published by Parkshaw Publishing Company in London and were sold for the price of one shilling. The ceremony began with the anointing of the King, symbolizing his spiritual entry into kingship, and then his crowning and enthronement, representing his assumption of temporal powers and responsibilities. The peers of the realm then paid homage to the King before a shorter and simpler ceremony was conducted for the Queen’s coronation. The return procession to Buckingham Palace was over six miles long (about 10 kilometres). Crowds
dsborough LanMuseum
of people lined the streets to watch. Over 32,000 soldiers took part and 20,000 police officers lined the route. The coronation was commemorated by a program of royal events lasting nearly a month, and by the issuing of official medals, coins and stamps. There were street parties and a great deal of memorabilia was produced. The magnificent show of pageantry and imperialism was the first coronation to be filmed and the first to be broadcast on radio. Also, in the history of television, it was the world’s first major outside broadcast.

You Said It Planning the Hinterland
I write to alert Maleny residents and other Hinterlanders to a presentation about the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Regional Plan. Hosted by Montville Village Association, the presentation by Sunshine Coast Council planners will explain the vision, principles and objectives of the plan both overall and in relation to Maleny, Montville, Mapleton and surrounds. The presentation will be held at the Montville Village Hall on Wednesday, February 22 commencing at 5.30 for 6.00pm, RSVP secretary.mva@gmail.com We look forward to seeing you there. Deb Davis Montville
Medical School
The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is growing rapidly with new campuses on the Fraser Coast, Gympie and Southbank. Add to that the newly announced campuses in other states designated for International Students. My point is, why not just create the 15 medical places and give them to USC? With the Sunshine Coast also in rapid expansion, it would make sense to have a home-grown medical school, right here, on the Coast. They’ve already sponsored the new hospital into existence, so why not just give it to them? Hadrian Davenport Beerwah
Medical School
The uproar about the state of planning for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital has an air of desperation about it. After all this time it seems all that's needed will be 15 more student places and everything will be well. It's hard to believe. Consider this: a number of years ago the Federal Government did say that there is an oversupply of doctors in Australia. The signs weren’t good during the planning phases of the new medical school either, because the University of Queensland pulled out of the idea in early 2013, and Griffith University stepped in to keep the project going. Griffith might well be regretting its decision now, and this regret is understandable
Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519
given the comments by Federal Assistant Health Minister Gillespie who has been quoted as saying that the supposed 15 student places was “not numbers (of doctors) but distribution”. It seems that the core of his reasoning is that there is great reluctance to create new student places, and this is understandable given the Federal Government's view that there is a surplus of doctors nationally. So Griffith may be safeguarding its own student doctor places, which is understandable. The whole planning for the medical school starts to look slipshod. To an outsider it appears that taxpayers' money was spent when there was little or no certainty about student numbers. Sadly, it appears as though State Health Minister Cameron Dick has joined the fray and wants his federal counterparts to concede the extra student places, when their budget is also under strain. It always comes down to socking the taxpayer when there is no planning. Peter Slade Beerwah
Not so rosy
The February 1, 2017 issue of GC News had a page 6 article about the nbn, commenting that the picture for our region is "not so rosy". I heartily concur! I urge all readers to view this map of the nbn rollout in our region: http:// tinyurl.com/nbn-glasshouse (or just go to https:// www.finder.com.au/nbn-tracker/map) The map clearly shows that our little area is being left in the dust. Why would property buyers want to come and live here, and buy our real estate, when we are technologically challenged? We've shot ourselves in the foot by listening to harebrained, vocal Jeremiahs who warn of all sorts of calumny and disease if we dare to join the modern world by having nbn towers built in our communities. Meanwhile, the latest nbn progress report shows that 470,199 premises in Australia are now in range of the dreaded nbn towers, with 158,850 premises hooked up. A new connection to the nbn is made every 12 seconds, and this is forecast to become every three seconds. The nbn corporate report shows that the fixed wireless network (i.e. towers) offers speeds up
to 50/20 Mbps, and that they have plans to increase network throughput on these towers to up to 250 Mbps by aggregating multiple radio carriers: "Throughput can be increased beyond 250 Mbps in a number of ways, such as using more radio spectrum or increased efficiencies in spectrum management." We need urgently to pressure our Council to stop stonewalling the nbn for Maleny/Glasshouse, lest we suffer financial, technical and intellectual disadvantage vis-a-vis the rest of Australia by becoming one of the only areas left without nbn access. Holding out for Fibre-to-the-Node or Fibreto-the-Premises is deeply unwise, given that this has not been provided in any rural area in Australia. Gerry Muller Maleny
Protesting doesn’t prove anything
So, the Australia Day protestors are going to take their protest to the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast next year. Bless their little hearts. What they don’t seem to understand, or don’t want to understand, is that if the English hadn’t settled in Australia, the French almost certainly would have. In fact, I’m sure I read somewhere that there was a French ship at Botany Bay when the first fleet arrived there in 1788. In any case, the French were certainly around. And if it wasn’t the English or the French, it could well have been the Spanish or the Dutch. It was, after all, the era of the big sailing ships on voyages of discovery of new lands. Now, suppose Australia had been sitting in the middle of the oceans, not “invaded” by any other country for another 154 years, the Japanese army, in 1942, would have swept across the country from north to south, killing as they did in China before the Second World War. Sure, we have been slow in granting various rights to the Australian Aborigines, but protesting against “invasion” will not prove anything. John Andrews, Maleny

When pain and stiffness slows us down, we can improve our quality of life through appropriate exercise. Specifically designed exercise programs can improve the symptoms of chronic conditions such as depression, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis in particular, is an on-going issue for many of us as we age. The decline in our bone mineral density increases our risk of fractures. An exercise program that includes light weights and resistance can help prevent further decline in bone loss, and if done correctly can actually aid in increasing bone density. Our Over 60’s Fit & Strong - 5-Week Program is designed to increase strength and fitness, improving balance and core strength in a fun, safe and fully supervised environment. Our program will increase your confidence and raise your energy levels and your individually designed free home program will keep you moving in the right direction. Grandparents who care for their grandchildren live up to a five years longer than those who don’t, according to new research from Edith Cowan University. The research showed that half of the grandparents who provided occasional care for their grandchildren or other members of the community lived for about five additional years after first being interviewed for the research. Dr David Coall from ECU’s School of Medical and Health Sciences said it showed caregiving helped improve longevity among older people. “This research shows the positive link between caregiving and a longer lifespan in older people, however we can only speculate as to why,” he said. “Previous research points to helping behaviour as a stress buffer which involves, for example, the hormone oxytocin which can strengthen bonding between people. “This link could be a mechanism deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was crucial for the survival of the human species.” He said the research showed the benefits of caring also extended beyond grandchildren. “Older people who cared for their own adult children or other members of the community showed the same increase in longevity,” he said. However there can be too much of a good thing. Other research conducted by Dr Coall’s research group at ECU has found negative physical and mental health impacts among grandparents who care fulltime for their grandchildren. Dr Coall said there is no magic bullet amount of caregiving which is best to boost longevity “It is very important that every individual decides for themselves what ‘moderate amounts of help’ means,” he said.

Choose your own aged care package provider By Sonia Clark The Australian Government has instigated significant reforms to home care which will improve the way that home care services are delivered to older Australians. Following ongoing changes to the orientation of service delivery, from February 27 funding for home care packages will now follow a consumer directed care (CDC) focus. Basically this means that previously where care packages were allocated by providers to clients – now the clients (consumers) can choose a provider suited to them and choose what types of care and services they want to access. Funding for care packages will now follow the consumer – which means that they can change providers whenever they wish, including if they move to another area. Glasshouse Country Care is a not for profit community care organisation who have been established for 20 years and are an approved
local provider for homebased care packages for the local Glasshouse region. GCC Manager Ann McQuay said Glasshouse Country Care are now able to provide home care packages guiding and supporting you from the first stage of aging right the way through the aging process. “Our organisation has been providing care in the local community for 20 years and we understand the concerns of clients living in a semi-rural area with limited access to health services,” she said. “We are committed to assisting people to stay functionally independent in their own homes. The organisation can assist people from the first signs of aging with a few hours a week general home maintenance services such as cleaning and mowing, all the way through to 24 hour home residential support." The community care group already has an established transport, home maintenance service, and day respite centre. From February 27, Glasshouse Country Care can offer a locally based service for higher needs home care packages and can now support clients, if required, in all areas of their life. Clients can access these packages through the ‘My Aged Care’ portal (www.myagedcare.gov.au). For further information call 54946948 or visit www.ghcare.org.au

Capture your moment in Paradise A combined passion for photography and travel has led two friends to create exciting group tours to some beautiful destinations. It all began when Nature photographer Andrew Goodall and former Maleny local Arcadia Love had a chance catch up a couple of years ago. “Arcadia knew I had hosted photography tours to the Top End, the Kimberley and New Zealand,” explains Andrew. “She had just teamed up with Trade Travel on the Sunshine Coast who organise specialty group tours. We started talking about possibilities and within a year had co-hosted our first photography tour with 20 keen photographers to Norfolk Island. Another tour to Norfolk followed and now
we’re heading off to explore Vanuatu.” Having run his ‘Photography Essentials’ workshop in Maleny since 2008, Andrew had a huge following of over 1,500 photographers – from hobbyists to professionals.

Your tour host, Andrew Goodall
Co-host Arcadia Love with some of Vanuatu's wildlife
Many of the people who join his tours are past students. Some take partners or friends who just want to have a holiday, but Andrew says most people who join a tour share a love of photography. “Some come to learn, and others are highly experienced photographers who are there for the pure indulgence of spending a week taking photos in stunning locations. While I am always there to help with any questions, some of our photographers are happy to just take off in search of their own shots. “The great thing about a photography tour is the places we visit are breathtaking, so people have a wonderful time even if they don’t bring a camera.”
So where does Arcadia fit into the picture? “My job,” she says “is to make sure everything runs smoothly so we all have a great time along the way. “I’ve hosted many group tours and Vanuatu remains one of my favourite destinations. It truly is paradise – right on our doorstep. It’s so beautiful; it’s as if the colour on everything is just turned up! “We visit waterfalls, lagoons, beaches, tropical flora and fauna and there’s even an optional side trip to photograph a live volcano. We stay at the beautiful Iririki Resort, dine on fresh local food, experience some Vanuatu culture and meet some of the locals including a trip to a village Kindergarten. Only a few seats remain on the May / June tour to Vanuatu. To find out more contact Bruce Drysdale at Trade Travel: 0419 668 426 or bruce@tradetravel.com.

Need transport to your local shopping centre? The Council Link initiative is an affordable transport service that collects eligible people from their homes and takes them to their local shopping centre. The service is available for Seniors (people aged 60 and over), people with a disability or mobility impairment (DSP concession card holders) and carers and minors accompanying eligible people (carers card or companion card holders). The service (previously known as Council Cabs) operates one day per week within a designated area and provides a door-to door service. Drivers will collect you from your home in the morning and drive you to your local shopping centre. If you book a return trip you will be picked up at around lunch time from the place you were dropped off. Around the Hinterland the service operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays, Council Link drivers will transport those living in Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Peachester to Beerwah Marketplace. Landsborough, Mooloolah Valley and Mount Mellum residents can access Landsborough Maleny Road Shopping Centre. On Thursdays the service will take those living in Balmoral Ridge, Maleny, North Maleny and Witta to Maple Street and those living at Mapleton, Montville and Flaxton can be taken to Nambour Plaza. Cost is $2.00 per person per one way trip. To book, call 5390 1288 by 12.00noon the day before during business hours. If you have a hearing impairment you can book through the National Relay TTY Service on 13 3677. Please let the operator know if you have any special needs, including the use of walking frames or wheelchairs. If you decide to cancel your booking please call 5390 1288, preferably the day before. This allows another person from your community to use this service. Council Link is a service provided by Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with ComLink and is funded by the Public Transport Levy.

Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program The Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program returns in 2017 offering everything from Tai Chi to belly dancing designed to improve the health and wellbeing of over-55s. Council is launching a series of affordable $5.00 seniors classes in six locations on the Sunshine Coast to add to the already large program of activities that support seniors to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. One of the key targets of council’s Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 was for the region to maintain its ranking as the healthiest in Queensland and the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program is a step in the right direction to achieving this. Fitness instructor Danielle Thompson from Mind, Body, Soul, Fitness for You understands the specific needs of seniors when it comes to exercising. “Exercise and health have no barriers, it is an individual’s journey for a better life,” she said. “Each class brings stability, balance, core, progressive functional movement and fall prevention to help maintain a full and independent life.” Community Port Stability, Balance and Core will be held at the Maleny RSL Hall, 1 Bunya Street, on Tuesdays from 8.30am to 9.30am (for more details, phone Danielle on 0418 139 878). Councillor Jenny McKay said taking part in regular physical activity was important for everyone’s health and unfortunately most Australians weren’t getting the required recommended physical activity they needed. In addition to the $5.00 seniors classes, Resolve Fitness Club at Caloundra RSL are offering free seniors fitness classes on the first and third Wednesday of each month following by a free morning tea. Seniors can also participate in the low-cost Sunshine 60 and Better Tai Chi, Ageless Grace, Belly Dancing, Gentle Exercise and Fun and Laughter classes. “So if you are keen to start getting active but are not sure where to start, I’m sure Healthy Sunshine Coast will have a great option,” Cr McKay said. Visit council’s website for full details on the full Healthy Sunshine Coast program, including mums and bubs and general fitness for all the community to enjoy.

Elected
Representatives Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher
You spoke and I listened!
Thank you to those community members who made the effort to come and see me at one of my Listening Posts last week. We had over 30 people attend the community barbecue at the Glasshouse Information Centre, which was just wonderful. The sausages we picked up from Glasshouse Country Meats went down a treat and I thank my hardworking volunteers and staff for their magnificent cooking skills. My Listening Post blitz included visits to 11 of the main areas of the Fisher electorate and I was really overwhelmed by the amount of people that came by to chat. Many of the issues discussed were around NBN or Telstra, pensions and general comments around how the Government is progressing. This kind of grassroots consultation is priceless for any Member of Parliament and has left me with many things to consider and work on in the coming months. I intend to give a speech in Parliament next week about my travels through the Fisher electorate, so make sure you check my website www. andrewwallacemp.com.au later in the week to hear and see it for yourselves.
NBN
It was made abundantly clear at many of my Listening Posts that there are a lot of people struggling with internet connection and are keen to see the expedited delivery of the NBN in your area. I have been aware of this issue in the Hinterland long before I became your Federal Member and have been lobbying my Federal colleagues since my election last year around the need to invest more tele-communications infrastructure in our region. As I continue to work in Canberra around this issue, I would like to encourage residents to email me with their individual experiences and feedback. I can’t make any promises that I can deliver changes for you overnight, but I can take your feedback on board and use this in my discussions with relevant stakeholders. Please send an email to Andrew. wallace.mp@aph.gov.au or visit my website to send me a message.

Kilcoy-Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road intersection At the end of last year, I lodged a petition on behalf of residents requesting the Minister for Main Roads to immediately commission planning, funding and construction of safety upgrades at this dangerous intersection. Unfortunately the Minister has advised that the intersection is currently a low priority for an upgrade and subsequently will not be progressing with planning for an upgrade. While some recent work has been carried out to widen the road shoulder and install a channelized right-turn lane, residents will be rightly disappointed that the Minister has not taken their request for genuine safety upgrades more seriously. I will continue to raise this issue with the Minister, and do everything in my power, in an effort to avoid a serious incident occurring at this intersection.
Update regarding the intersection of Landsborough-Maleny Road and MalenyMontville Road
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have advised that work to concrete the traffic islands at this intersection will commence on Monday, February 6. This will certainly address the issue of vegetation impacting on visibility, however as many of you have pointed out this intersection is a major concern. I have agreed to sponsor a petition requesting the Minister for Main Roads to investigate and fund safety upgrades. I’m happy to advise that Rachel Fentiman of Maleny has agreed to be Principal Petitioner and I’d like to thank Rachel for her commitment. The written petition is available for signing at my office (4/70 Maple Street, Maleny) and I will advise you in future columns of other locations where they will be available. You can also add your name to the online petition which can be found at: www.parliament. qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/e-petitions. Please note: You are allowed to sign both the written and e-petition.
Gambling Community Benefit Fund
Round 92 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund is now open to eligible organisations who would like to apply for a grant. This fund is Queensland’s largest one-off grants program, distributing approximately $53 million per year to Queensland communities. Grants are available from $500 to $35,000 and this round closes on February 28, 2017. For more information go to www.justice.qld.gov.au/corporate/sponsorships-andgrants/grants/community-benefit-funding-programs If you would like me to act as a referee for your application, please phone my office on 5318 1800.

Maleny becoming RV-friendly Works on the installation of an RV dump point at Maleny Showgrounds will commence next week and this is the first of many steps to be taken to roll-out the welcome mat to caravans across the Hinterland. I will shortly be having an onsite meeting to discuss the best way forward to cater to – and benefit from – this growing market.
Take care to share I have also noted concerns of Mooloolah Valley residents who have noticed an increase in water craft such as kayaks and paddle boards being used within the swimming area in the Ewen Maddock Dam. During this hot weather, it’s the perfect time to take a dip and get out on the water – but it’s also a timely reminder to be extra careful and keep an eye out on the water, particularly for children and families.
Access ramps approved for Woombye An investigation has been completed at Blackall Street, Woombye and approval has been granted for two access ramps, along with a new section of a connecting footpath to be installed on Keil Street. An access ramp for Keil Street on the side where the War Memorial is, as well as another ramp with a new connection to the existing footpath on the other side of Keil Street, has been planned and will now be installed as soon as resources and weather permit.
Dog registration audit Council is taking dog registrations seriously, approving an audit across the Sunshine Coast late last year. Registering your dog helps council to identify and reunite them with their owners if they get lost, and helps deliver services such as litter bins and off-leash services where they are needed. Officers completed 67 inspections, with the majority of dogs found to be compliant and only three dogs found to have outstanding registration fees.
Planting for Wildlife Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare will host a one-day workshop for adults and families on Saturday, February 11 at Mooloolah Native Nursery on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Visit www.maroochywaterwatchandlancare.org for more details.
Yoga in the Maroochy Botanic Gardens is a great success The final yoga session at the Maroochy Botanic Gardens was held last week with another strong showing of support. The sessions have been a resounding success, contributing to enhanced visitation to the gardens. We are working on an exciting new range of classes and offerings to continue in the coming months, so watch this space!

Out & About Saturday night at Beerwah's Daepo Korean Barbeque by Lea Parkes Since seeing the signs go up for the Korean Barbeque at Beerwah, there has been plenty of speculation from many locals about how it works. So, Brownie and I headed along with some friends on Saturday night to check it out and we definitely weren’t alone. The place was full of locals - groups, couples, and families with kids – and they all seemed to be enjoying their meals and the experience. The way it works at night is that diners pay a set amount for an all you can eat evening. There is a range of items that are already prepared, including entrée type items, spring rolls, tempura battered vegetables, and miso soup. There were also main meal choices such as fried rice, sushi, beef curry and a sweet and sour for you to serve as much as you want to. This is combined with a huge selection of meat and vegetable items that you choose from then take back to the table, with sauces, and then you cook yourself on the barbeque plate that is part of your table. Brownie tried plenty of the meat – for research purposes – including pork belly, pork loin, pork cutlet, marinated pork, smoked pork, lamb, steak, baby octopus, and squid, and he definitely gave it the thumbs up – and we will be needing to go back to try all the other items on offer that we didn’t get around to.
Beerwah locals Lilly Gaunt, Jemma Blair, Cassi Nuske and Keith Aldous gave their meal the thumbs up
Damien Neylan, Morgan Amoore, John Robinson, Emily Cook and Ryan Hewson all thought it was great

Things To Do Got a taste for theatre restaurant?
Beach dinner to be a paws-itive fundraiser
The Beerwah State High School’s Chaplaincy Committee will be hosting a fundraising Theatre Restaurant at Club Glass House on Saturday, February 25, for the school chaplain, Mike Turner. The performances consist of a range of acts including music, comedy and illusion – by very talented locals who are donating their time to support our chaplaincy service. It’s a great idea for a fun evening out with friends, and at the same time supporting a great cause. For those who have never been to a theatre restaurant, it is basically a sit-down dinner whilst you watch a stage show. Dinner starts at 6.00pm and the first act kicks off around 7.00pm. Dessert will be served during intermission and the show will wrap up around 9.00pm. The bar will be serving drinks throughout the evening. Tickets are $30.00 and must prepaid and can be purchased by contacting Sharon at Club Glass House on 5436 5000 or Mike Turner via the school office on 5436 5333. Call now! The wages of our fulltime chaplain come primarily from donations and fundraising.
The inaugural FurBall on the Beach, a charity dinner with a difference, is being held on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on the night of Saturday, March 4 with all proceeds going to help rescue animals. Guests will be asked to cough it up to help more than 1,000 animals that will be given shelter and support over the next year by the joint beneficiaries, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) and 4 Paws Animal Rescue. Spurning the four walls of conventional venues, the event will be held under giant teepees at the water’s edge of one of the Sunshine Coast’s most scenic spots, Cotton Tree Park foreshore. SCARS spokesperson Penny Brischke said, “Those lucky enough to secure a ticket will be greeted by the paw-parazzi on the red carpet as they enter, with photo opportunities alongside some of our most adorable rescue pups. “Tickets also cover delicious food from some of the Sunshine Coast’s best restaurants, your first two drinks, live entertainment, a fur-friend photo booth, live and silent auctions, amazing raffle prizes and more,” Ms Brischke said. FurBalls are society events held throughout North America and in Asia to raise awareness and funds for animal rescue organisations. They are a salute to the bond between people and their pets. “These very special celebrations have been held overseas for many years and have played a pivotal role in helping rescue, heal and find homes for tens of thousands of animals,” said Ms Brischke. “SCARS and 4 Paws are proud to now bring this exciting event to Queensland for the first time.” Tickets are available at www.furballaustralia.com.au or by phoning SCARS on 5494 5275 Monday to Sunday, 10.00am-5.00pm. This is a licensed event. No animals or children allowed.
Return to magical romantic era Sunshine Coast Jazz Club are presenting Brad Leaver’s Quartet at the Currimundi Hotel, Buderim Street, Currimundi, on Sunday, February 12. Doors open 12.30pm with music from 2.00pm. Brad Leaver's Quartet is fronted by sophisticated, super-suave Brad whose velvet crooning has been melting hearts all over the world for 15 years. Picture yourself dancing cheek to cheek with your loved one, to the music of a more refined and romantic era, when women in hats and gloves were wooed by handsome strangers in the night, a time when crooners like Sinatra and Dean Martin ruled the nightclubs. Indulge in a martini, sit back and relax to the smokey smooth vocals of Mr Brad Leaver. As sophisticated and profound as anything by Tony Bennett, Brad combines PhD intellect with caveman machismo, mixed in a blender of pure swing, guaranteed to grab even the most Sinatra-proof listener way down at the bottom of their soul. Cost is $20.00 members, $25.00 for non-members, and $22.50 seniors. 30

Movies Movies I, Daniel Blake ‘I, Daniel Blake’, Maleny Film Society’s screening on Saturday evening, February 11 in the Maleny Community Centre, comes from celebrated British director Ken Loach, known for successes such as ‘Cathy Come Home’ and ‘My Name is Joe’. Film critic David Stratton, speaking recently in Maleny at the Australian Film Festival, gave an accolade to Loach and the integrity of his film-making. This production, classified MA15+, picked up the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 2016. Loach’s films are gritty with realism, tackling current and tough social issues through honest, ordinary characters. This one will resonate with anyone trapped in the bureaucracy of social welfare, the frustration of applying for jobs that don’t exist, surviving on a shoestring but unable to break out of the circle of poverty from the prison of dole queues. ‘I, Daniel Blake’ is the story of a 59-year-old carpenter who loses his job through injury and finds the only relief available is via a Jobseeker program, managed on-line and thus inaccessible. To apply, Daniel must first conquer computers and battle with a mouse. He teams up with a young single mother of two, whose experiences with the injustice of the system parallel his own. Dinner, catered by Spaghetti Junction, opens at 6.00pm, with the film at 7.15pm. The public can purchase tickets at the door only for $13.00. Members of the MFS may pre-book on-line or via the Maleny Information Centre ($8.00). Drinks bar and tea and coffee stand add to the ambience of an enjoyable and thoughtful night out at the movies. Celery
It’s time to sow your celery seeds to get them up and ready to plant out in March and April. Celery is best grown through Autumn and Winter, when it will produce the best and crunchiest stems. You can grow it through Spring and Summer, but be prepared for shorter stems that may be stronger (and sometimes bitter) in flavour. Sow into a seedling tray – only lightly cover them with seed raising mix. Water and keep them in a cool spot out of the direct sun. Celery seeds need soil temperature under 21 degrees to germinate. They’ll take a bit of time to germinate and grow to a size ready for transplanting – maybe six to eight weeks. In the meantime, prepare your soil well as they like a rich soil that holds the moisture. So dig through compost and manures and sweeten with some dolomite or garden lime. If you’re planting from bought seedlings, you’ll still need to do the soil preparation and give it two to three weeks to settle down. Don’t plant your celery too close as they need space to grow their stems as well as soil space to spread their roots – so space them 25-30cm apart, and mulch them well. Once you’ve planted them, water every day for the first month, then every third day after that … they are particularly thirsty. Water starved celery tastes bitter and won’t produce for you. They are shallow rooted plants with the roots in the top couple of centimetres of the soil, which is why consistent watering is so important. Side dressing with a complete fertiliser each four weeks is also important – or use a soluble one you water in every fortnight. Celery is a fairly slow grower, so it will take about four months til you get a mature plant. Celery puts on 70% of its growth in the last 30% of its life. Don’t be tempted to harvest the outside stems early, as I tend to find that it takes away too many of the green leaves which are there to produce energy for the growing plant. The old-school technique of wrapping them in newspaper to blanch the stems is just that … old school. It’s mostly a waste of time and effort – the green stems taste better anyway.

Woody Pear
Xylomelum benthamii Woody pear is a small tree growing to 11 metres that can be found in sandy soils, from north eastern Queensland to south eastern New South Wales. It grows in the Glass House Mountains area, but is rarely noticed as a species unless in flower or fruit. The tree has tough leathery leaves with coarse prominent veins, which are dark green above and paler beneath. The opposite leaves are whorled around the branchlets and the new growth is often soft and rusty brown. Unlike the mature trees, the leaves of the juvenile plant have sharply toothed edges and are often mistaken for a different species. Old leaves often turn yellow on mature trees and this can be an identifying feature. The yellow brown or creamy flowers appear in spring and are followed by attractive grey or brown woody seed capsules, which open to release just two winged seeds.

WEDNESDAYS *Mooloolah (Paget Road) 9.00am
Reverend Scott Kroeger - Maleny Presbyterian Church I’m sitting in a jet high over Australia on my way to a meeting in Sydney, marvelling at the wonders of modern travel. The earth has shrunk such that there are very few places that are inaccessible to humans by modern transportation. The technological advances from jets right down to all-terrain-vehicles have afforded most everyone the opportunity to get where they need to go. These days the journey is almost as exciting as the destination. Travel agencies are equipped with helping you make your journey pleasant and convenient, providing services and travel warnings about where and how to go. People travel near and far these days and it always causes me to wonder. And yet, people still wonder and ask the question of, “Where am I going when I die?” In a world where we can know where we are at all times, we wonder where we will be when death comes. No GPS trackers there. Lots of people believe in an afterlife, but when discussed with any depth, it is all pretty The Bible does provide GCNEWSvague. Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM some insight however. C

1John 5:13 says: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." Jesus said to those who were his disciples: John 14:1 - 4 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." But journeys can be long, arduous and filled with danger. Even Jesus said it would be difficult: Matt. 7:13 -14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” There are spiritual travel agencies that can help you find your way to heaven. They can equip you for the journey and give the advice you need to have a successful journey. Check out your local church and ask them how to get to heaven.

Local tennis player to represent Australia Glenview/Mooloolah Tennis Club is thrilled that one of their current members, Chris Aylward, has been chosen to play in the ITF YoungSeniors World Championships to be held in Cape Town, South Africa at the end of March. The ITF Young-Seniors World Team and Individual Championships is the highest ranked event on the ITF Seniors Circuit for male and female players in the age categories of 35 to 45. Although Chris is 48, he has been picked to represent Australia in the 40 year age category, which is quite an achievement for the local tennis club member. Over the past three years, Chris has been playing in the Tennis Seniors Queensland and Tennis Seniors Australia tournaments. At the end of last year his ranking was 12 – after competing in only six matches. Just before Christmas, Chris competed in a tournament in Kooyong, coming runner up in the singles 45

Contributed by Brenda Briese "The heat goes on" as they say in the song! It's certainly been trying our players and affecting our competition numbers. However, there are still a lot of ‘brave’ ladies willing to play. On Saturday, January 28, we had 28 players for a Stableford round. Winner was Heather Henn, 39 points and runner up was Andrea Campbell on 35 points. Heather is in the winner’s circle again, having a bit of a hot run at present. Well done. NTPs: No 2, A Campbell; 5 and 16, B Howe; 18, C Stone. BRD went to 30 pts. Thursday, February 2, was the first Monthly Medal for this year on a very hot day but still we

Last month he played in the Tennis Australia Seniors tournament in Adelaide where he was picked to play in South Africa in March. “The club are really excited and proud of his achievements,” says Glenview/Mooloolah Tennis Club’s Publicity Officer Jenny Morris. “He is a great club member, helpful and very supportive of others.” Chris has been playing tennis since he was a junior and has been an active member of the Glenview/Mooloolah Tennis Club for the last five years. He also plays in the Sunshine Coast Tennis Association Monday night fixtures for Mooloolah in a Division 1 team. The tournament in Cape Town will run from March 19 through to April 1.

Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday’s Jackpot Pairs/Triples was once again a fizzer, with only three players present, so they played Scroungers. Where are all the members who wanted the time changed from morning to afternoon? So far this has been a complete flop. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge had a full green with 16 teams competing. The winning teams were: Wot Notts, Handles, Musketeers, Ben Bryce, Krackerjacks, Bridge Club, Sunstone and Cookies. The lucky draw winners were: Lead - Ash Phipps, Second - Toni Walters and Skip David Coffey. The Touchers went to Pat Dunn, Tony Yorkson and Kay Gesch. The lucky money

board winners were Beth Glover and Derek Wilson and the mystery prize winner was Brett Gillis. Friday’s Scroungers winners were John Kapetanic, Curley Petersen and Ian Chatterton. None of the Sponsors’ Prize winners were present and Tony Snel was the money board winner. This week there will be Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday (hopefully), Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday. There are also teams travelling to compete at Mapleton Monday and Kilcoy Wednesday. Finally, a reminder about the AGM on Saturday, February 25 at the Clubhouse at 10.00am. www.gcnews.com.au
Get on your bike and come and try BMX racing Would you like to see your kids having fun whilst gaining important bike handling skills and confidence? Perhaps you know a thrill seeker who jumps everything on their bike or is always turning a simple ride into a race? If so, BMX Racing could be the sport for you or your family and you are invited to come and try it out for free. Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club, on Connection Road, Mooloolah, will host their come and try day on Saturday, February 18 from 9.30am to 11.00am or 12.30pm to 2.00pm. Bring along a bike, helmet (full face preferred), gloves (if possible), long sleeved shirt/long pants, enclosed shoes and a water bottle. Loan bikes, full faced helmets and gloves are available from the club, however stock is limited. The event is free and includes a sausage sizzle for participants plus a free show bag for the first 25 riders that sign up for a yearly membership or a $40.00 four month trial licence (ID is required for all new memberships so don’t forget to bring along their birth certificate/passport or driver’s licence).
BMX (Bicycle Moto Cross) is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and is an action packed sport that the whole family can participate in, from the two year olds on their balance bikes through to the over 60s. Both males and females enjoy participating in club activities with many also competing at higher levels such as interclub race meets, State, National, World Titles – or even the Olympics. Excluding school holidays Hinterland BMX operates all year round with training every Monday night from 4.45pm - 5.15pm for balance bikes, 5.30pm - 6.30pm beginner/juniors and 6.30pm-8pm for experienced riders. Cost $3.00. Extra coaching clinics are also run throughout the week. Race nights are held on the second, fourth and fifth Friday night of each month with registration from 6.00pm-6.45pm and racing commencing at 7.00pm. Cost $6.00. For more information check out Hinterland Bmx Club on Facebook or phone Dom on 0408 737 839.

Last week our Secretary, Dennis Hume, was presented with a new Australian flag for our club from Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
In praise of women who read One morning a husband returns to the cabin after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out, since it is such a beautiful day. She motors out a short distance, anchors, and reads her book. Along comes a ranger in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, "Good morning, Ma'am, what are you doing?" "Reading a book," she replies, (thinking, "Isn't that obvious?") "You're in a Restricted Fishing Area," he informs her. "I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing, I'm reading." "Yes, but you have all the equipment. I'll have to write you up a ticket."
"For reading a book," she replies. "You're in a Restricted Fishing Area," he informs her again. "But officer, I'm not fishing, I'm reading." "Yes, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to write you up a ticket and you'll have to pay a fine." "If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault," says the woman. "But I haven't even touched you," says the ranger. "That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment." "Have a nice day ma'am," and he immediately departed. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 A new perspective could stem from strange news or information from an odd source. See if you can delegate where possible. This is because changes in plans, and unexpected behaviour, may be functionally upsetting in work duties, but they can be outsourced if you are clever. A change in circumstances unexpectedly lifts your spirits. Grab opportunities. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Planetary alignment now indicates that visitors, attracted to you, are very smart. Someone has something interesting to say. Possibly, because Mercury has now entered Aquarius, some new tech gadgets keep you focused on their productivity. The weekend puts a spotlight on your public life or professional agenda. Jupiter brings blessings. SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 The weekend opens the way to introducing changes and building on past ideas, rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water! An excellent aspect to your ruling planet Jupiter speeds up the tempo of your life, providing encounters that can change your luck for the better and make you the beneficiary of someone’s generosity now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This is a week where you need to find yourself – by that I mean the true inner self, and reach out from your heart in an empathetic feeling rather than a cold intellectual comment. Take care of pending paper work and forget moody people by setting your sights on a bigger project. It’s worthwhile buying an unusual tech gadget for your home.

GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Expect people over the weekend to be passionate, yet intellectual, as you exchange conversations. Hopefully you will be again persuasive, charming and informed. Your sign is one of a skilled communicator. One of your planets is currently bringing your attention to travel and even freedom of just going for a drive by yourself. Curiosity is stirred. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Mercury has now entered the sign of Aquarius, so you should be paying more attention to shared finances and tax matters. There may be the need to consider the making of a will and an enduring Power of Attorney. There is a sudden spark of good fortune because of expansion at work. Take advantage of any quick offers. Just do it! LEO July 23 - August 22 What a weekend you will have as the full Moon is in your own sign! Relationships are going to be very prominent this month and it will shine the spotlight all over you. You should find someone interested in travelling with you and sharing many of your beliefs. A great weekend to be passionate and energetic, wanting to explore life to its fullest. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 The planets bring to life any office duties or health affairs so it is a good time to really think diet and exercise measures. You get positive support from Mercury, your traditional ruler, which has entered Aquarius this week and that air sign brings intellectual people who are trustworthy on answers to health matters. A sudden expected surprise now.

Week beginning 08/02/17 AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This is your birthday month which still has over a week left before the Pisceans jump on the wagon! Be reminded that you are the world’s idealist, crusading for reform, and seeking what is new and different. The world is in a state of reform and many idealists are shouting to be noticed. A world of wonderful possibilities opens up! PISCES February 20 - March 20 This weekend provides you with the full Moon to let your inner spirit out to enjoy life spontaneously. Under this Aquarius aspect try something new or different. There is so much interesting news coming to you, fortunately most being full of good fortune. Your own optimism brings you last minute luck. Time to start an unusual project. ARIES March 21 - April 20 There is a full Moon over this weekend in the sign of good partnerships, and it may generate excitement in your social life. Connecting yourself with people through a community group, or social media event, can be just the ticket! The Sun connects with Jupiter and that may even be good reason for a very large celebration. Tell others your hopes. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 The Full moon over this weekend is at 22 degrees Leo and arrives on Saturday, the 11th, at approx 10.34am. Why note this time? Well that puts a spotlight on immediate home and work urgencies – you may feel pressured on certain agendas that cannot be put off any longer. Your mood could not be more buoyant, upbeat or optimistic now.
