MARCH 8 2017

Hi Everyone

I

have met Neil Collie from Glass House Mountains and a while ago we became Facebook friends. So, when he contacted GC&M News to let us know he was taking part in ‘The Big Red Run’ later this year, I can’t say I was totally surprised – but I was definitely impressed. For someone like me who pops their joggers on and then quietly saunters around the man-made pathways at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve for a gentle 30-or-so minute walk on a Sunday morning, I can’t even imagine what would motivate someone to take on this adventure? Who chooses to run 250km across the Simpson Desert to fundraise for children with diabetes? Someone who is clearly driven, who likes to test themselves, to do good for others and someone who is willing to give it a crack! Although when I asked Neil why he had decided to take on the challenge, he wrapped it up in just the one word: craziness! I guess that our local community is fortunate to be home to people with that bit of craziness about them, that they will get out there and do something a little mad and in turn make things a little better for others. See Neil’s story on page 3 – and we look forward to hearing how his Big Red adventure turns out! Regards,

Local News Glass House local gearing up for desert run By Sonia Clark

‘The Big Red Run’ is a 250km running event through the Simpson Desert that raises money towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Since 2013, the annual six day race has raised over $800,000. This year Glass House resident Neil Collie is set to tackle this huge event which takes place from June 24 to 29. With a milestone birthday coming up next year, Neil wanted to do something totally outside his comfort zone before he turned 50. Having a survived a stroke a few years back, Neil, with the support of friends and family, has completely revitalised his outlook on life and has fully embraced his personal motto of ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’ after recovering from his stroke. Last October Neil completed the Blackall100 – the 100km run through the Blackall Range at Mapleton and in preparation for the ‘Big Red Run’ he trains on the trails between Steve Irwin Way through to Wild Horse Mountain. He also trains with runner Jamie Milne (who ran from Melbourne to Kawana in September last year!). While a 250km run through the Australian desert

sounds daunting – Neil is extremely motivated to achieve his goal which has the additional benefit of supporting a very worthy cause, and he also looks forward to challenging himself. “Six days running will be massive!” says Neil. “But I'm a realist and while it will be really tough – by putting one foot in front of the other anything is possible.” Although the race is still not for another few months, Neil has already raised over $2,000 and knows that having local support will inspire him: “I know how supportive the local community are and this will make the 250km easier knowing that my town is behind me.” If you would like find out more, follow Neil’s journey on his Facebook page, www.facebook. com/neil.collie.94

New pound has tails wagging Lost pets and livestock on the Sunshine Coast are now being cared for at a new facility with council’s new Sippy Creek Animal Pound in Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha, officially open. Construction commenced in January last year on the state-of-the-art facility which features a cattery building with 32 individual cat enclosures, a kennel building with 32 individual kennel modules, an assessment facility, a large animal enclosure, a poultry enclosure and central administration and reception building. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new Sippy Creek Animal Pound would have the ability to service the region’s growing pet population and animal management needs now and into the future. “The former pound has been servicing the Coast for more than 30 years and demand on the service has grown significantly over that time,” Mayor Jamieson said. “We have a commitment to safely house lost or abandoned animals and the new pound will enable us to do so in a way that is aligned with contemporary animal welfare obligations and guidelines.”

Mayor Mark Jamieson with Cr Jenny McKay officially opening the new facility The central location of the new facility is integral to servicing the domestic animal, livestock and poultry population. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the new pound included some outstanding environmental features. “The new Sippy Creek Animal Pound facility features an impressive list of sustainable design features including the water supply,” Cr McKay said. “Supply of water at the site is limited so the facility was designed to be self-contained for both water supply and wastewater management. “The new pound features rainwater harvesting and retention systems, including six 20,000 litre rainwater tanks for the provision of potable water for the animals, plus two 10,000 litre bore water tanks that provide for cleaning and watering of grass.” To make it easier for residents to collect their lost pets, the new pound has extended its trading hours and is open from Monday to Friday 8.15am - 6.00pm and Saturday 9.00am - noon.

Changes to Glass House electoral boundaries The Queensland Redistribution Commission has released its proposal for the reconfiguration of the State’s electoral boundaries (www.boundaries.ecq.qld.gov.au). Major changes across all areas of Queensland are proposed, with the current 89 seats being increased by four to 93. The two local seats affected are that of Glass House (currently held by Andrew Powell) and Caloundra (held by Mark McArdle). This week we take a more detailed look at the implications for Glass House. The electorate of Glass House is being renamed as Tibrogargan. According to the Commission’s report, the main changes are listed as: 1. Gains part of the Kenilworth locality, particularly the Imbil Forest area, from Nicklin; 2. Gains suburbs in the south, including Ocean View, Campbells Pocket and portions of the Rocksberg and Moorina suburbs from the current electorate of Pine Rivers; 3. Gains the remainder of Rocksberg, Moorina and part of the Upper Caboolture suburbs from Morayfield; 4. Gains Diamond Valley, Mooloolah Valley and the Bald Knob localities from Caloundra; 5. Gains a small section of the Landsborough locality from Caloundra, but also transfers a portion to Caloundra;

Proud supporters of Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival 2016 Super Strawberry Competition

6. Transfers Palmwoods, Woombye, Chevallum, Ilkley and its portion of the Tanawha suburbs to Nicklin; and 7. Transfers part of the Elimbah, Caboolture and Moodlu suburbs to Pumicestone. The proposed electorate has 31,707 electors, which is 4.40% below quota (currently 37,610). The redistribution means that Andrew is not one of these voters, as his place of residence will be within the Nicklin electorate. However, with the changes not coming into effect until they are finalised (21 days after gazettal – which is about mid-June), if an election is called before that date, it would be run using the current electoral boundaries. Andrew would then still be living within his electorate. And with fixed four year terms commencing with the next election, this would be the case until 2021. To see the proposed electoral maps for Tibrogargan, along with the current map to compare it with, head to www.gcnew.com. au and go to Read>Hot Off The Press.

Golden Wedding Anniversary for Landsborough couple By Sonia Clark Landsborough couple Pam and Noel Meyers celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, March 4 with a relaxed lunch gathering of family members and relations at the Beerwah Hotel. The couple first met in Melbourne in May 1966, when Pam was 18 and Noel was 23. Noel first noticed Pam as she walking down the street returning from work while he was visiting one of his work mates who lived in the street. He remembers that he “liked her right from the start” – though Pam was initially hard to convince to go out with him. Just as he was giving up hope she would step out with him – she told her mum that he had asked her out and the rest, as they say, is history. The couple were married in a little church in Preston on March 4, 1967. Around 20 - 30 guests attended the ceremony. Following the wedding the couple lived for a few weeks with Pam’s parents before moving into a flat which was part of a divided up house. Noel worked locally as a truck driver and Pam worked as a shoe machinist. Later Pam and Noel moved to Bundoora, a north Melbourne suburb, where they lived for over 16 years before spending a further

three years in Mill Park. Pam and Noel had three children – son Jason (sadly now deceased) and two daughters, Karyn and Lynda. In October 1988, Pam and Noel sold up in Melbourne and decided to move up to the Sunshine Coast to be nearer to Pam’s parents. By this time Noel had taken an early retirement and they also thought it would be nice for their children to live closer to their grandparents. When asked about a tip for reaching their 50 year milestone together, Noel suggested that, “Everyone has ups and downs in a marriage and when you come to the rocky road you just keep driving until sooner or later the road will smooth out again.” To mark their anniversary Pam and Noel have had matching rings with 50 etched into them made in the similar style to the very first ring that Pam gave Noel when they started going out together.

Funding available to promote the Glass House Mountains Community groups across the Sunshine Coast are invited to apply for more than $330,000 in funding through the Coalition Government’s Community Heritage and Icons Grants program. Grants of between $2,500 and $10,000 are available to support community engagement and awareness raising activities that promote places on Australia’s National Heritage List. The Sunshine Coast has only one national heritage listed site – the Glass House Mountains, located in the Federal electorate of Fisher. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace welcomed the program and encouraged local groups to get involved. “The Glass House Mountains are the gateway to the Sunshine Coast, but so few visitors or even locals know or appreciate their historical, indigenous and geological significance,” Mr Wallace said. I want to make sure that as a community we can do even more to spread the word about this local treasure.” “Our heritage contributes to our sense of place, community and personal wellbeing, it informs us about where we have come from and who we are, and is fundamental to our national identity,” Mr Wallace said. “I strongly encourage community groups in our region to apply for this funding. Let’s get involved and use this opportunity to tell the world about the beautiful and iconic Glass House Mountains.” The Program is designed to help more people

‘3 One Act Plays’ return to The Playhouse Maleny Players are busy with the final weeks of rehearsal ahead of their 2017 season of ‘3 One Act Plays’ which will be performed over two consecutive weekends, from Friday, March 31 to Sunday, April 2 and Friday, April 7 to Sunday, April 9. The three short works, ‘Sharks in the Custard’, ‘Between Two Storms’ and ‘Valentines’, contain a diversity of subject matter with two of the three productions being written and directed by local community members. GC&M News caught up with the three local directors to find out more about the production. Rob Hobson is both writer and director of ‘Valentines’, a play set in a pub and involving a chance meeting between two men on Valentine’s Day. Rob has been involved with the Maleny

Valentines

By Sonia Clark

Players for the last seven years and this is his second produced one act play. The 20 minute play evolved from a skit that was produced for last year’s Valentine’s Day Revue and features three main actors. Rob had the idea bubbling away for the play for a while and he says over time he “nibbled at it” until the ideas developed and the play came together. ‘Valentines’ was chosen for the production after Rob had submitted it at the group’s monthly play reading night to favourable response. “It is absolutely awesome to see the words come to life. I’ve come into writing later in life but it is something I’ve always wanted to do – and I love it!” said Rob. Andrew Wallace is the locally-based writer and director of ‘Between Two Storms’ and he has already had a number of one act plays produced around the State. This play was originally written in 2011 as a submission for a creative festival which featured a sea theme. ‘Between Two Storms’ is a 25 minute play that Andrew based on a real life incident. The play is set in a small town on the Queensland coast where, in the aftermath of a cyclone, a young man is discovered alive in the surf who

ms Between Two Stor does not (or will not) speak. Andrew feels that having a main character that performs no dialogue on stage provides an intriguing dramatic focus for the audience. Because the unknown man has no identity, the other characters are quick to attribute their own agendas and concerns to him, and this provides the basis of the play. Essentially however, Andrew has written a play about empathy and he is very grateful for the skill of the actors who bring the story to life and complete the process that originally began on the page. “As so many amateur theatre groups do the standardised light plays, I thought it would be good to offer an original play that is thought provoking as well,” explained Andrew. Deb Yffer offers her directorial debut with ‘Sharks in the Custard’. Usually seen on stage instead of behind the scenes, this is Deb’s first foray into directing and she is loving it!

As an actor she brings a unique understanding to her stage direction and is thrilled to be working with a wonderful cast. When researching ideas for one act plays, Deb came across the award winning ‘Sharks in the Custard’ and the story resonated with her deeply. Set in an art gallery, the play features the story of three mature cleaning ladies who discover that their jobs, which offer security, identity and a refuge from the outside world, are at risk. The play looks at how people can feel a sense of competence through their work and Deb was also particularly drawn to the strong mature female roles. “This play stood out for me because even though there are humourous elements – especially some of the jokes about intellectual art which many people in the audience would identify with – it had real depth,” she said. Tickets are $20.00 adults and $10.00 students and are available from Trybooking or from Imelda’s on Maple. For more information and show times go to www.malenyplayers.org

Beards create funds for beds Thanks to the great effort from the Maleny Commerce's Christmas Street Carnival committee and the generous Maleny community, the Beard Competition held at last year’s Carnival raised $1,000.00 for the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary. Last week Karen and Brea Shaw took the opportunity to hand over the ‘giant’ cheque to Secretary of the Hospital Auxiliary, Lily Reid, and Acting Facility Manager Glennis McAlpine. This money will go towards much needed equipment that benefits both patients’ and staff's general convenience and comfort. Lily explained that recently much of the funds they have received have been going to the purchase of Versacare Beds, which have mattresses specially designed to eliminate bed sores for the patients. “We are very fortunate to have local individuals and groups such as Maleny Commerce who donate to the hospital auxiliary,” she said.

Glennis, Karen, Br ea and Lily with th e cheque from Mal eny Commerce “Recently the Maleny IGA also provided funds for the purchase of a stainless steel barbeque for under the pergola.” One of the future projects that the hospital will be working on is the extension of the Walk of Remembrance which was constructed in 2015. This work will see it connected to the front entrance to the hospital, which will give safe access to the pathway.

Green light for Caboolture Hospital car parks Much needed extra car parks adjacent to the Caboolture Hospital are one step closer, with an important agreement reached between the Department of Education and Training and Metro North Hospital and Health Service. Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick said the green light had been given to expand the existing hospital car park to provide an extra 300 free car parks.

Sharks in the Custard

“The new car park, which will be located at the rear of the hospital, is expected to be completed later this year. The development will also provide ambulances with all-weather emergency access to the Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department during a flood event.” he said. The car park expansion is part of a larger upgrade currently underway which includes 32 extra beds at the hospital.

Flag presentation

Contributed by Peter Hyde The Australian National Flag used to drape the funeral casket of well-known local pioneer George Pike has been presented to his son Gary Pike and his wife Kathy by the Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch. The presentation was made by RSL Service Member Michael Guinan and RSL Sub Branch President Peter Hyde at a recent Glasshouse RSL dinner evening. George Pike, 98 years, was a foundation member of the RSL Sub Branch in 1946 after rendering active service during WWII in the RAAF. After the war, George became very successful growing pineapples and with other farming locally, and the main farm on Pikes Road at Glass House Mountains is still run by family members. His son Gary was more than moved with the presentation of the framed flag, which also included a picture of his father as well as a narrative of George's military service and local farming history. Gary warmly thanked the Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch for their special gesture.

Leanda Talks - Overcoming stress anxiety and depression

Leanda Weynton Naturopath ND and Yoga Teacher

As a naturopathic doctor the most common conversation I have in clinic is on stress and how stress can or has led to symptoms of anxiety or even depression. An important factor in how to overcome stress is to understand more about our individual personality and how we perceive or

Quite commonly I see mineral deficiencies in the body that are causing these symptoms to occur and in this case they can be easily addressed with proper diagnosis. More often than not during the conversations I have with clients who are suffering with anxiety or depression, it becomes apparent that they are chemically and minerally out of balance. Chemically our body will deplete itself from minerals when we stress. Think about what happens to our body when we are feeling uptight … anything from muscle tightness, racing heart, stomach and bowel complaints, physical pain and more. This takes a lot of energy from the body and the most common minerals that are depleted when we’re under stress are magnesium and B vitamins. Very few people are aware of the enormous role magnesium plays in our health. Really what we need to know is that there is not much that this mineral doesn’t do. I often call this mineral the all round feel good mineral because Magnesium is important to nearly every function and tissue in the body, supports a healthy immune system, prevents inflammation, boosts heart health and provides stamina. Why should we take a magnesium supplement? Nearly one in four Australians are deficient in magnesium. This is because of soil deficiencies in our farming, lack of magnesium in diet and it becoming depleted when our body is under stress and tension. A deficiency in magnesium can show as muscle spasms, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, migraines, osteoporosis and more.

deal with stress. For instance some people are very high achievers and have a lot on their plate, but naturally this is how they work. So this is not a stress until that plate is so overflowing that you can’t keep up. This might lead to complete exhaustion and get to a point where mentally and physically there’s no more in the tank. Others may like to have a slow and steady pace … one thing at a time and everything has its own order. Although when a few things present at once that creates disorder where stress can evolve and result in fluctuation of moods and extreme worry. No matter your personality type, the most important thing is to better understand your traits so you realise symptoms before they develop into something that’s bigger. Apart from looking at our personality types, other factors that can cause stress are: genetic factors, hormone imbalances, mineral deficiencies, diet and lifestyle, inflammation and lack of oxygen.

Vegan Brownie Recipe Ingredients • 1 cup cooked mashed sweet potato • 3 tablespoons almond butter • 2 tablespoon maple syrup or rice malt syrup • ¼ cup organic cocoa powder (this superfood is high in magnesium) • ½ cup goji berries • ¼ cup cacao nibs Method Preheat oven to 200° & grease a small cake pan Melt almond butter with syrup In a large bowl add the sweet potato, melted nut butter, syrup, cocoa powder and mix well Fold in goji berries and cacao nibs Pour mixture into greased pan and bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before slicing Store in fridge or freezer. ENJOY! If you or know of somebody who is suffering with any of these symptoms and have been looking for answers, our qualified practitioners are here to help you and trained to give proper diagnosis.

New focus on Men’s Health pays off

Contributed by Bob McLean Recently Cr Baberowski visited the Glasshouse Country Menshed (GCMI) to inspect the new SawStop Table Saw, purchased with a Sunshine Coast Council Grant. The machine’s protection system will stop the rotation of the blade when the saw blade comes in contact with a misplaced finger or hand. There were over fifty hand incidents with table saws in Men Sheds in Queensland in 2016. This new unit will protect GCMI members from injury and send them home intact.

MCU supports local community groups

The MCU Charitable Trust provides grants to local organisations whose activities enhance the local environment and community and last week the first round of grants for 2017 was presented to five local groups. Guides Queensland - Maleny District received $2,000.00, Knitfest received $2,000.00, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre received $1,300.00, Hinterland Bush Links received $444.00, and Arts Connect Inc received combined grants of $2,000.00. The funds will be used to undertake a range of projects within the local area including this year’s Knitfest which is planned for the weekend of July 8 and 9. The Girl Guides will be using the funds for their renovation of the guide hut, and Arts Connect will be using some of the funds for their Open Studio Trail project. MCU Board Chair Sarah Davies presented the cheques to representatives from each of the groups. Sarah, along with Angela Griffin and Nic Hilton, make up the Charitable Trust committee.

Bob McLean, Bob Carruthers, Klaus Schiemann and Cr Rick Baberowski inspect the SawStop Table Saw In December the Prostate Cancer Support Group rescheduled the evening gatherings to a morning joint gathering at the new venue of Menshed. The second gathering held in February was as successful as the first. Both gatherings had an audience of around sixty. The group was made up of GCMI members, their partners and other community members who accepted the invitation to join in and learn more about Men’s Health issues. The December gathering was to inform the men and their partners on post prostate recovery and managing continence with Craig Allingham. The February gathering was addressed by a team from Ozcare on Dementia and Depression, a common issue in retirement. The success of this change exceeded expiations. All local men are invited to check out the shed any Wednesday morning and then choose how they would like to join in. The next community Men’s Health information gathering for men and partners will be on April 12 at 9.15am at 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah.

Motivated couple look to advantages of additional revenue

Susi and Damion Leo are a well established farming couple from Western Australia who have recently added to their core business by becoming local resellers of Transportable Shade Sheds. Based in Kukerin, the Wheatbelt region of WA, the couple are mixed grain and sheep farmers managing their family farm. This motivated young couple realised the potential for an additional source of revenue that could be easily incorporated Business feature into their current lifestyle and work commitments with minimal hassle. An advantage of setting up this small business venture is that the huge range of shade and storage options easily complements their established rural business as the products can reach a highly viable local market. Damion originally saw an advert on TV during holidays in January looking for resellers in WA. Transportable Shade Sheds have recently branched out to offering their range as a reseller option to the West Coast of Australia. Damion thought it looked like a worthwhile prospect and decided to make contact with the Landsborough company and find out a bit more information. Damion has also had previous experience building sheds, patios etc. and Susi used to work at the local Shire as an Executive Secretary prior to having children. The couple have both also run and managed a grocery / hardware store in Kukerin prior to returning to the family farm. “We saw this opportunity as a fantastic way to make some ‘off farm income’ – which is highly desirable given the sometimes instable nature of farming, like droughts, wool prices, and floods! We also feel that if we wanted to head in another direction than farming one day then this would be perfect,” explained Susi. The process to becoming a reseller was really quite simple for the couple. After Damion got in touch with business manager Tyler Maclaren at Transportable Shade Sheds, it was as simple as making the final decision to go ahead with the venture, getting finances organised and then attending a two day course in Perth. The whole process has been hassle free and establishing the business has easily happened in a short period of time. Susi and Damion have already found that the online support platform Saver6.com beneficial to their new business as it allows the couple to get on with the day to day quotes and sales while they are in the background working on the advertising and media side. “We envision this will sit nicely on the side to us farming and allowing us to give it the time it requires and deserves as well as being able to be our own boss and sit it to the side when the time comes on the farm i.e. seeding, harvest, shearing!” says the couple. Susi and Damion are looking forward to a bit more financial independence and stability through undertaking this venture. They feel that they will also gain satisfaction from knowing their customers will be receiving a quality product from people they can trust. Being part of a small rural community they are in the unique position of already knowing a high percentage of potential local customers. “Tyler and Melissa at Transportable Shade Sheds have both been fantastic in replying to our constant email queries and have always been available by phone when needed – usually with the right answer immediately!” If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Kukerin and surrounding areas contact Susi and Damion on 0427 646 043. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.

Please contact Susi and Damion, Saver6.com members and Transportable Shade Shed specialists. They are available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

School News GCC students at forefront of research

By Jade King It is now four years since Agricultural Science was offered as a subject at Glasshouse Christian College and it looks set to be yet another incredible year. Year 11 students have been learning about the anatomy and physiology of plants and how Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) works as a technology to identify stressors in plants. They are working to develop NDVI indices for locally grown crops such as macadamia, custard apples, strawberries, ginger and pineapples. Some of these crops have no previous NDVI index guides, so the Year 11 students are definitely at the forefront of Agricultural Science research when determining this information. Once the indices are established, students will use this knowledge to interpret mapping they conduct when they fly the Agricultural Science drone which is equipped with an NDVI capable camera. The Year 10 Agricultural Science students have jumped straight in to the Department of Agriculture’s Plant Science competition. This year the topic is ‘Soils’ and the students have enjoyed getting dirty while discovering the physical and chemical components of soil. During term one they are running pot trials to investigate which is the best soil texture for optimal plant growth. The students are also conducting laboratory analysis to determine particle size distribution of their soils. It has definitely been an eye opener for these new ‘Aggies’, with many discovering and agreeing that soil is awesome! Preps in the kitchen

Contributed by Debbie Roberts The Beerburrum State School Prep students were recently introduced to the kitchen and the food experience. Blind taste testing of sour, sweet, salty and bitter foods developed their understanding of taste. Everyone learnt the names of common kitchen utensils and what they are used for. A smorgasbord of fresh fruit and vegetables were named and sorted. Mrs Davidson collected some fantastic artwork for the kitchen with students drawing their favourite foods. But mixing primary and secondary colours to make icing for a sweet treat was the most fun of all! The Preps are looking forward to making rainbow pizzas next term when they return for their first full on cooking lesson. Thank you so much to the wonderful team of parents and grandparents who came to help us and enjoy the kitchen experience.

Young writers

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Students of Mooloolah State School’s Writing Zone have hit the ground running and have started to investigate the ways they can become young authors this year. Students from different year levels have come (Back) Lilly M, Zali, Ruby, together for a Mooloolah State School writing Noah, Eli and Charli, (front) club to extend themselves as writers and even Ana, Lily C, and Brooke enter competitions. The writing club is run by our learning support and Year 3 teacher, Ms Caroline Kelly. One of the school’s key focus areas this year is developing writing in our students and drawing on their successes. In this way they are exploring the different ways to express themselves and their opinions through writing. The Year 3 students recently wrote about saving our koalas, with the new language and writing techniques they’ve learned through the writing club. The students meet every week in their own time to explore valuable skills and techniques in language, writing, comprehension and a whole lot more. The children’s enjoyment of the club can be seen in the work they’re producing and is evident in the way they light up when it’s Writing Zone time. www.gcnews.com.au

Inspiring little imaginations Gee, how the past six weeks have flown! I can honestly say my first weeks at KinderMarlee have been great, with each day bringing some wonderful new experiences. KinderMarlee is definitely a small centre with a big difference. It’s warm and friendly, and encourages everyone to just be themselves. There are almost endless opportunities for the children to explore, play, investigate and learn – all in a beautiful natural setting. It is what drew me to KinderMarlee in the first place. Each day when I walk through the door, I just know I am in the best place in this community for young children, apart from their own homes of course. I am a kindergarten teacher myself, with more than 17 years’ experience and KinderMarlee’s

approach to learning and development really excites me. I find it reminiscent of childhoods from years ago: providing a space where time is unhurried and there are plenty of spaces for building confidence and inspiring imaginations. The centre’s learning programs compliment and support the most current teaching methodologies. It is an ideal balance of the old working with the new. To start the year, the KinderMarlee children are learning about their identities and sense of belonging. They have designed and painted a huge KinderMarlee flag. The youngest children are being nurtured and encouraged to form friendships. The older children are helping too by giving a steady hand to those whose little feet need to balance or a gentle push on the swing.

That’s another thing I love about KinderMarlee – the sense of togetherness – without hesitation, we all help each other. Finally, I would like Sue Eadie - Teacher to say how much I (and new owner) am looking forward to becoming part of the great Landsborough community. On behalf of the KinderMarlee team, I offer my warmest of welcomes to the new children and their families. We are all looking forward to a great year together.

Introducing Gae Phelps Gae has been with Glass House Early Education Centre since 2006 and has genuinely loved working with all the children, their families and the other staff members over the years. Gae has built a great relationship with the families that have attended the Centre and she loves being involved with the learning journeys of the children. Having worked in all the rooms at the Centre from Nursery through to After School Care, Gae has had the privilege of seeing many of the children develop and grow during her time there. Gae is Assistant Director at the Centre and has her Diploma of Children’s Services in early childhood education and care. She brings over 20 years experience in childcare to her role and had previously worked in the Northern Territory in child care and for the Health Department.

Educator Gae Phelps

www.gcnews.com.au

She is currently studying her advanced diploma. Over the last 10 years although she has seen the Centre expand dramatically she appreciates that with its ‘family like atmosphere’ it has retained a lot of its long term staff. “We all have a great relationship here and we don’t see many of our staff come and go. I think that is a reflection of the positive environment we have here and an indication of how much the staff enjoy coming to work,” explains Gae. Currently working in the After School Care area, she has been working with the children to develop an engaging program of natural outdoor play inspired by their interests. “By using the children’s ideas we can develop a play program of child focussed learning that they really get excited about!”

Centre News Centre coordinator Ange Hardy and the team are continuing their focus for 2017 and building bonds with their local community. This month they are assisting with a call for donations for local Sippy Downs Animal Refuge (SCARS). “Our children enjoyed visiting last year with our donations, and everything collected was gratefully passed on to the centre. This year they would appreciate any of the following, please: good quality wet and dry cat and dog food, towels / blankets, cat litter trays, robust soccer balls or toys for cats and dogs. There has also been a recent urgent request for kitten food sachets due to an influx into the refuge, but anything you are able to give is an amazing support,” said Ange. “We’ve made it easy for anyone to donate by placing a big clam shell in the foyer, so please call in.” Following on with an animal theme, the Australia Zoo ‘Adopt an Animal’ campaign has been well supported, and now the only thing left to do is to decide. “We thank our families for their donations and feedback, and have been working with our children to give them the choice of animal to adopt. We are in the process of tallying all the votes, so watch this space,” said Ange. “It’s been a great way of engaging our children in thinking about environmental awareness, and supporting wildlife conservation, as well as being a pretty cool thing to do too!”

Supporting marriage equality

The rail bridge is owned by the council (us), the bridge must be fixed properly and until then all heavy traffic movements crossing the bridge should cease to prevent a worsening of the situation impacting the safety of the bridge. I don’t know how many heavy traffic movements there are but I am guessing around a hundred, more or less a day, that involve two crossings of the bridge, one empty of load, one loaded with stone or bark (truck and dog full). It stands to reason that vibration and the weight of these vehicles will cause further degradation of the structure. To not halt the crossings by heavy vehicles is tantamount to a neglect of duty of care to the public. The council may well be putting lives at risk by not acting now. It is inconvenient for the trucks, but no more so than a potential ban by Q Rail trains not passing under the bridge because it is deemed unsafe. This impacts users from all the visitors to the area, local residents and the parents transporting their kids to and from school. This may even give the council some much

The Senate is running an inquiry into an amendment bill that would allow for marriage equality. The inquiry has set the scene for members of Federal Parliament to speak up for fairness. Elected representatives can choose a vote in parliament, and vote yes for marriage equality. We are encouraging everyone in the Sunshine Coast to let our political representatives know it’s time we make marriage equality happen. Amnesty International Australia are part of the Equality Campaign, a diverse community of Australians working together to achieve marriage equality through a parliamentary vote. The campaign brings together families, couples, friends, people young and old from all over Australia. Choosing to marry the person you love is a human right, and an important way many of us choose to show our commitment. Over two thirds of Australians think marriage should be equal, and it’s time our elected representatives speak up for love and fairness and support a parliamentary vote. This is about the people in our lives. We all know someone in our family, a friend, a neighbour or a workmate who is currently unable to marry the person they love.

Check your NBN availability

Are you wondering whether you’re ever getting an NBN internet connection? Well, NBN Co has changed their website to make it easier to see when that expected day will arrive. Their ‘check your address’ function lets you look up your address and see what technology is planned (such as fibre to the premise, fibre to the node, fibre to the curb, fixed wireless, satellite or something else) and when it is expected to be ready. NBN Co have also announced they are including a fibre to the curb (FTTC) technology, where the optic cable is delivered to the telcom pit in the footpath outside a premise, rather than to a node (fibre to the node or FTTN) at a street corner. The newer technology is said to be better than the FTTN option. It still uses the deteriorating copper telephone network to deliver broadband to your house, but the distance of copper it uses is less than it would be with FTTN. However, the FTTC technology relies on being powered by the premise rather than having its own power source as with FTTN. Some areas locally – such as Maple Street in Maleny – will now be receiving this new technology, although the NBN Co website indicates that it will not be until possibly December 2018. To look up your house or business, go to www. nbnco.com.au and use the ‘check your address’ function on the home page. www.gcnews.com.au

$10,000 to hire a young person

Redistribution

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

There are hundreds of great small businesses in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. These small businesses are the ones who create the jobs that our young people need. This month there is a new Federal Government incentive for businesses in our area to hire one of our unemployed young people. If you are a small business in our community, and you hire an eligible unemployed young person, the Government can now give you a Youth Bonus subsidy of up to $10,000. I know that this scheme will give just that boost that many companies need to give a young person a go. I encourage anyone who runs a business to get involved and think about whether that extra money would let you take on more people. Contact my office to find out more.

Last week, the Queensland Redistribution Commission released proposed changes to the State Electoral boundaries that will ultimately affect some of the Glass House electorate. In short the changes would include: • a proposed name change from Glass House to Tibrogargan; • Palmwoods, Chevallum, the small part of Landsborough that was in Glass House and Caboolture would be in neighbouring electorates; and • Mooloolah, Rocksberg, Upper Caboolture, Ocean View and Moorina would be added to the electorate.

It was with great pleasure that I joined the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, and Mayor Mark Jamieson to open the new, world-class Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre at Maleny. I wholeheartedly encourage all residents of the hinterland to come and visit this fantastic facility. Big thanks must also go to the staff, volunteers and the Friends of Mary Cairncross whose contribution has been, and will continue to be, central to the ongoing success of the new Discovery Centre.

Help available for farmers

I know how difficult it can be for farmers in our community. The Federal Government can help in cases where farmers are struggling, with the Farm Household Allowance. This month the Government made important changes to the FHA to make sure more farmers can get it when they need it. We have removed some of the waiting periods, and made sure that we do not count any of the things farmers use to run their business as assets when we judge whether they need support. If your family needs this help you can find out more about the FHA from the Department of Agriculture’s website, or contact my office.

Busy time in Canberra

It has been an exceptionally busy three weeks in Canberra. During the eleven sitting days that we have had so far in February, I have given 16 speeches in Parliament. In two of these speeches I informed my fellow MPs about what people who came to my listening posts, like the one at the Glass House Information Centre, told me they care about. I spoke about the Sunshine Coast’s infrastructure needs and reminded the Government about how much work still needs to be done on roads and rail in our region. I was also really pleased to have the chance to tell Parliament about Maleny Dairies recent award win and about some of the Order of Australia recipients that live here. I think it is incredibly important that Federal MPs use the national platform of Parliament to raise people’s awareness about the wonderful things that are going on in our community, and to tell the Government about the challenges that our local people face. That is what I will always do. I am following up with Ministers about the NBN and the other issues that you raised with me this month. I will update you soon on our progress, and in the meantime please continue to email me at andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au or phone my office with any feedback you have.

So what does that mean?

The electorate is 90% the same as Glass House. I have eight years of connection, of success, of understanding the issues and of knowing what needs to be done in the electorate. I simply could not leave it to anyone else to finish things like the D’Aguilar Highway upgrades, the Woodford High School, the Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre, the Maleny-Kenilworth Road, the rail duplication…and the list goes on and on. It is therefore my intension to contest the seat of Tibrogargan if the proposed changes go through and I want to assure all of you of my ongoing commitment to this region. If you are interested in having a look at the maps or having a say about the new boundaries, further information is available on the ECQ website at http://boundaries.ecq.qld.gov.au/

Maleny Golf Club has been given the green light for the expansion to 18 holes. After successfully completing the first 9 holes, council approved the lease extension, which not only provides for the 18 holes but also the management plan for the Southern Wetlands Landscape. The plan will help guide council in wetlands rehabilitation and establish greater opportunities for partnerships with volunteers. It will also ensure that public have access to the wetlands whilst enabling the Maleny Golf Club to continue with their planned expansion and development of an 18-hole golf course. Full recognition to the Maleny Golf Club for their recent success with a large State Grant to continue their work.

Brandenburg Road traffic count

Further collected traffic data on Brandenburg Road between December 4 and December 17 last year: The average daily traffic over that period was found to be 311 vehicles per day with an 85th percentile speed of 36km/h at the data collection site. Assessment of this road will now be updated to reflect this most recent traffic count.

Clean-Up Australia Day

We’ve had an amazing response to clean-up events for the turtle hatchlings with hundreds of people from all over the coast and further afield pitching in to collect more than 600kg of rubbish off our beaches last month. We also called on people to get involved all over the coast for Clean-Up Australia Day last Sunday (March 5) and I thank everyone who rolled up their sleeves to help this great cause.

Residents jump on the Garage Sale Trail

A massive congratulations is due to residents who took part in the 2016 Garage Sale Trail. More than 15,340 sales and stalls were registered around Australia with 2.1 million items listed for sale / reuse. The average household made $281.00 through this wonderful day, community groups / charities an average of $650.00 and schools $1,500.00. The average seller redistributed 66 items that would otherwise have been sent to landfill or saved from sitting in a cupboard. Sunshine Coast Council is committed to supporting this program again in 2017, so stay tuned for details throughout the year.

Kidney dialysis patients to benefit

The Landsborough Masonic Lodge recently became aware that the Dialysis Training Unit at the Nambour Hospital was in need of a computer tablet device to assist their training program for dialysis patients wishing to set up their own home based treatment facility. The purpose of the tablet is to give the patient an in depth reference base for understanding how to use their equipment and how to monitor and correct any problems that might develop. The Lodge realised that this would be of significant benefit to the patients and sought assistance from the Hand Heart Pocket Charity arm of Freemasons Queensland. They also saw the benefit to the community and agreed to assist in financing two tablets and recently members of the Landsborough Masonic Lodge presented them to the staff of the Renal Unit at the Nambour Hospital.

It’s so easy to grow your business with GC&M News! I have been advertising in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for nearly five years now. What I love about the paper is the ease of advertising; changes can be made without a hassle. Businesses have such little time, but it's never a problem for the girls to whip up an ad. What attracted me to the paper was the very friendly, approachable staff. It’s a small local business too, which means you are dealing directly with them. They also keep you up to date on any up and

coming advertising events etc. that your business may be interested in. I find it very cost effective as well. I have advertised elsewhere but have never had the same response rate. I feel without the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News my business would have not grown as quickly as it has. I also love to sit down with a coffee (when I get the chance ) and have a read myself. Living - Music Voice of the Tuba - In Concert

Music Today

with Dr Michael Whiticker

All the colours of the rainbow Here’s a challenge for you. Think about a solo instrumental piece you especially like, perhaps something like the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor ('The Moonlight Sonata'). What you hear is this wonderfully dream-like, hazy sound with middle register notes forlornly sounding a plaintive melody through the haze. The piano appears to sustain forever through all this until at last there is clarity and a climax of sorts as the melody climbs out of the haze. Now, here’s the test; imagine the same piece played on the guitar or the harp. Not too difficult, but what about on the flute? Okay, that’s getting harder as the flute is a solo line instrument that can’t reproduce the harmonically rich sounds a piano can make and it certainly doesn’t offer the crisp, percussive attacks of the piano; but it could play that melody very well. The object of this exercise is to get you thinking about timbre or colour in music. It is all a bit complicated as the sound an instrument makes depends on both the initial attack – whether the instrument is blown, bowed, plucked or struck – and the resulting sound that follows that attack or transient. The harmonics or overtones each instrument produces following that transient, is what gives us the instrument’s timbre. Backtracking to our above choice of instruments and we find all of those mentioned can play the main melody of the 'Moonlight', and each of them would give a different spirit or character to the melody. If you know Ravel’s Bolero then there is a most wonderful example of what I am talking about here, i.e. orchestration, which is the art of taking the different colours available to you in a given ensemble, and making music out of them. Marvelling at the beauty of sound each instrument makes (can you hear a cello playing our 'Moonlight' melody?) is one of the pleasures of listening to music, and when you put instruments together in different combinations and in different size ensembles then it becomes even more enthralling. Imagine for example the cello in a string quartet, then think of it combined with seven other celli in an orchestra! Do have a colourful month!

Michael has a recording studio in Peachester and runs the Glasshouse Musos open mic sessions. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au www.gcnews.com.au

Movies Sunset Song

A powerful personal story set in rural Scotland, ‘Sunset Song’ will be screened twice this coming weekend in the Maleny Community Centre, firstly on Saturday, March 11 at 7.15pm, followed by a matinee on Sunday, March 12 at 4.00pm. Based on “Scotland’s favourite novel” written in 1932 by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, ‘Sunset Song’ follows the coming of age of the daughter of a dictatorial farmer father (played by Peter Mullan) who rules the life and love of his strong-willed daughter (Agyness Deyn). Set against the beautiful backdrop of Aberdeenshire, the story begins just prior to World War I, with its consequent effects on the life of Scotland and its people, however isolated their community. Director Terence Davies (‘Distant Voices, Still Lives’ and ‘The Deep Blue Sea’) spent several years adapting this treasured novel to the screen. Saturday evening dinner will be catered by Lumbini Restaurant Maleny and bar service begins at 6.00pm, with the screening at 7.15pm. Bookings for MFS members can be made online or via the Maleny Information Centre. The Sunday matinee will be accompanied by a tea and coffee stand – a new opportunity to go to view a fine film on a Sunday afternoon!

Theatre Eleanor’s Story of a Third Reich childhood

Historians will revel in this unique story of a young American girl caught with her family inside Hitler’s Germany during the Second World War, to be performed by that young girl’s granddaughter on the stage at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday, March 26 at 2.00pm. Maleny Arts Council brings ‘Eleanor’s Story – An American Girl in Hitler’s Germany’ to Maleny as the first production in their 2017 season. Ingrid Garner with her It is currently in the Adelaide Festival program grandmother Eleanor and program director Peter Lavery will be in Adelaide to give us a preview of it. “I was impressed by this hour-long glimpse of living history when I chose it for our 2017 season and I am really looking forward to seeing it in Adelaide – and of course again in Maleny!” he said. “It is a story for everyone, those who went through the war themselves, the public who would like to know more about life in those days and senior high school students. “In Maleny, of course, our audience will have the chance to speak with Ingrid Garner after her show when we invite our patrons up on the deck for a drink from the Centre bar and a nibble while we discuss the production and meet with the creator and performer of this dramatic story.” In 1939 Eleanor Ramath Garner’s father took his family from New York to Germany where he had taken a new job that he expected would give his family a secure financial future. Instead, as they steamed across the Atlantic on the SS Hamburg unable to turn back, Hitler declared war on Poland and WWII began, and the family’s life for the next seven years was very different from what they had hoped. Eleanor was 9 years old. Eleanor’s granddaughter Ingrid Garner grew up with her grandmother’s stories, and as a teenager read Eleanor’s own award winning autobiography. Following her training in drama she spent hours conversing with her stillliving grandmother to gain further insight into this unique story. Tickets to this stunningly true story’s dramatisation are available from the Arts Council website www.malenyartscouncil.com, the Maleny Information Centre or from John Marsden on 5494 2584. Cost is $30.00, or $25.00 for members and for parties of ten. If you would like to become a member before the show, speak to John when you ring for tickets, or check the website. MARCH 8 2017 |

Ask Brownie

Could I ask a question of Brownie from In the Garden with Brownie? We have a number of avocado trees where we are living at the moment. They are loaded with fruit which looks almost full sized. How can we tell when the avocados are ready to be harvested? Thanks, Helen from Flaxton This is the eternal question for backyard avocado growers because the fruit don’t ‘ripen’ on the tree. Rather, they do so after being picked. This is a natural survival technique from the Guatemala / Mexico region where they come from, when the animals that ate the wild species of avocado were the large, now extinct, megafauna. It is thought that they would browse the forest floor, eating the fallen fruit whole and deposit the seed in their dung, ready to sprout. So being hard on the tree protected them from being eaten by smaller tree climbing animals, and softening when they fell meant they were attractive to the large megafauna. Luckily, these days we don’t have to compete with giant sloths for an avocado … we just have to work out when they are ripe. If an immature avocado is picked, it will not ripen to an acceptable eating quality and will often remain rubbery, shrivel and develop fruit rot. According to the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, you must learn to judge when hard, green fruit is mature and ready for harvest. They say that mature avocados can be recognised by the dull appearance of the skin, or shrivelling and yellowing of the fruit stalk. They also suggest that when a mature (i.e. ready to pick off the tree) fruit is cut open and the seed is removed, the seed coat is dark brown and dry, and doesn’t adhere to the flesh. Due to the effects of more sunlight, large fruit on the northern and eastern side of the tree, and fruit at the top and outside of the canopy, usually mature first. I remember that the late Colin Campbell used to suggest waiting until the first one falls to the ground, and put that in the cupboard, keep it for about a fortnight to ripen and it’ll be ready to eat. After that you can harvest others from the tree when the bit of the stem joining onto the fruit turns a bit lighter in colour. Then they’ll take 1-2 weeks to ripen in your fruit bowl. Warning to pet owners: Some varieties of avocado have been implicated in animal poisonings. All parts of the plant (leaves, wood, fruit) is poisonous except the seed. Animals known to be most affected are birds, dogs, cats, horses and goats. Even fish in a backyard pond have been recorded to have died as a result of leaves falling into the water. There is a chemical in the avocado plant called persin, and this chemical seems to cause a range of problems, the most serious of which is heart failure. But there are other effects such as vomiting, gastro-enteritis, respiratory distress and lung congestion.

Native Tamarind

Diplogottis australis The Native Tamarind is a rainforest pioneer with large sausage-shaped leaflets and, once established, has a good growth rate and is reasonably tolerant of urban conditions, but responds badly to cold weather, frost and strong winds. This tall and slender tree is crowned with large velvety leaves when young. The fruit of Native Tamarind is yellow-brown and hairy. The flesh is a yellow-orange colour, and it is valued as an indigenous fruit tree because the aril, which is a fleshy part of the seed, may be eaten raw or added to jams and chutneys. It also is used as the basis for a tangy cool drink. Many species of rainforest birds eat the fruit and then spread the seed. This lovely tree is perfect for regeneration plantings. It forms great habitat for many of our native animals and it is also a host plant for larvae of the Bright Cornelian Butterfly.

Father Harry Reuss - Maleny Anglican Church Lent – a good time to pray

Lent is traditionally a time when Christians take stock of themselves spiritually. They set aside extra time for prayer. So there you are, tentatively wanting to pray… Here are some helpful things to remember as you settle down to it. People have been praying since Adam had a grandson named Enosh. At least the Bible tells us in Genesis 4:26 that it was during his days when “men began to call on the name of the Lord”. They have been doing it ever since. People have been answered by God since Genesis, too. But if you want to read some beautiful prayers – and answers to them – browse through the Book of Psalms. Again and again the psalmist writes: “The Lord heard my cry.” So – what do you need to bring to prayer? Just the tiniest amount of faith that God is even there. Jesus assures us that even faith as big as a mustard seed will be effective. What gives you the right to come before Almighty God? Answer: Jesus does. The Bible is clear that “there is one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ”. (1 Tim. 2:5)

MY

The Bible makes clear that God does not stand on ceremony – he wants our personal, spontaneous prayers. Jesus was very matter of fact about it: “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6). The Bible assures us that prayer will bring us good things: “We may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16). Above all, prayer must be made with a pure heart. “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:18) That simply means that if you know you are doing something wrong, and intend to keep right on doing it, don’t waste time praying. Finally, what can be the results of your prayers this Lent? Well, here are just a few, for starters: 1. Joy and deep happiness (John 16:24) 2. Relief from your worry, stress and tension (Philippians 4:6,7) 3. Protection and deliverance from temptations (Matthew 26.41) 4. A growing thankfulness to God, who is worthy of all glory (Rev. 4:11) May prayer become your passion this Lent. CY

Sport Glasshouse Bowls Club

Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, March 1: Ladies A Grade Single Club Championship, Jenny Hobson def Lee Meyers 25-6. Millie Freshwater def Marilyn Podmore 26-17. Chris Freshwater def Jan Lawson on forfeit due to injury. Social Bowls: Noelene Annakin, Noelle Dean and Di Hume def Chris Dougan, Marilyn Boulton and Rhyliss Aitken 31-8. MZ Idle, Jack Timm and John McSwain drew with Graham Meyers, John Aitken and Ron Wilson 20 all. Thursday, March 2: Winners of the day were Warren Blackbourne and Ross Seigle with 2 wins + a margin of 15. R/Up with the highest margin in the second game was Jenny Hobson and Di Garland with + 17. Lucky draw went to Trevor Dennis and Peter Astbury. So great to see another full green of bowls being played. Due to the high numbers for the Thursday afternoon bowls you may be required to play triples at times. Saturday, March 4: Hinterland Local League Rd 5, Ladies 9.00am, Glasshouse 1 vs Mapleton at home. Not even being a couple players down could stop the ladies from winning. Both the pairs and triples got up. Special mention to Margaret Beasley and Wendy Platt who came back from 12 nil down to have a great win. Glasshouse 2 played away against Palmwoods. Our ladies had another great win this week and should be sitting in the top 3 on the table at the

end of the round along with Glasshouse 1. Hinterland Men played at home against Mapleton. Our boys put up a fight to win both the 4 bowl pairs and 2 bowl triples but went down in the fours and 3 bowl pairs to lose overall. Premier 7s Division 1 played away against Mooloolaba. It was always going to be a tough game for our boys with 4 players missing. Those picked did the best they could but went down on all 3 rinks. Next two weeks are at home, so hopefully they can finish with 2 wins. Premier 7s Division 3 played away against Brighton. With the side still in the race for top spot it was important Glasshouse had a win. Di Hume got up in the singles while Rob Scullion and Bill Tumbridge got up in the pairs on an extra end. Glasshouse winning 2 rinks to 1. Sunday, March 19 is the second annual Kerry Capern Bowls day. The event will be mixed fours. Get your teams together now and put them down on the sheet in our office shed. The cost is $30.00 which includes a light lunch and hot nibbles after. Please arrive at the club by 8.30am for a 9.00am start. This day is proudly sponsored by Bill and Lorelle Tumbridge. Come along for a couple games of bowls and have a beer in memory of Kerry. Sunday Bowls Coaching is back for 2017 from 10.30am to noon. This morning is open to everyone who wants to come along for a roll.

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Neil Lovett Maleny weather was kind on Thursday. The lawn maintenance group had just finished mowing and line marking when down came the rain. When we returned to play in the afternoon, the lawns were bathed in sunlight. Two games were played, involving seasoned players who’ve been on the sick list, a returning traveller, two relative newcomers and two old stagers. Vince Carbery and John Crofts beat Donna Manning 7 - 5, and Helen Andrews and

Neil Lovett beat Bev Sockhill and Nick Cram 11 - 8. Ken Barker travelled to Bribie Island to participate in the Mary Masters Memorial Trophy, but lack of game practice told against him, although he did win two of his six games. This week we look forward to our monthly visit from the Blackall Range Care Group. For information about playing times, joining, coaching or bookings, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Sarah Widin on 0417 640 704.

Local instructors step up to World Championship Trials Instructors Cameron and Kasia from the San Training Centre at Beerwah joined with team coach Norm from San Taekwondo Maleny and Kenilworth to compete at the World Taekwondo Championships selection event in Canberra last weekend. The event was one of the premier competitions in Australia with the very best players competing. All of the Australian team from last year’s Rio Olympics were competing and our local team gave it a great shot. Cameron had to contest the men’s under 80kg division where he won his first fight with an outstanding performance to finish with a 43 - 6 point win. That put him straight through to the final but he was not able to secure the win in a very technical contest, losing 8 - 4 but bringing home a silver medal. Kasia, who is also the team physiotherapist based at the San Training Centre, competed in the under 67kg division and fought well through the early rounds but was defeated in the semifinal 6 - 3 to take a bronze medal. Even though the pair narrowly missed selection for the national team to the World Championships, they have both been selected to join the National Development Team to train at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra and compete at a number of international tournaments. Congratulations to the team. We are lucky to have such a skilful and dedicated team of instructors here in Beerwah, Maleny and Kenilworth. For more information visit www.santkd.com or support the team by liking San Training Centre on Facebook.

Contributed by Pauline Fraley It was a home game for Witta Wagtails against Maroochydore TTs. It was a slow start, the competition was strong, but the outcome did not mirror the closeness of the competition. The score was 4 sets each, but Maroochydore scored more on points and were the winners of the day. Thank you to Claire, Gerry, Suzie and Sonia. Whistlers played at Maroochydore against Meteors. We tried hard and there were lots of rallies, and we all felt we had enough by the last sets. We didn't bring the win home but we are happy we had a great game. Score was 23-38 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf. The Wildcats were at home to Ballinger Smartinis. It was a slow start but the tennis picked up in the middle, but a bit too late. Pauline, Libby, Jenie and Anne did their best but went down 41-28; 6-2 sets. In very hot conditions in Gympie, the Wikings won 7-5 sets in a match that included 6 tie breaks against first time rivals Murgon that was played in the very best spirit of the game. The Witta Wonders had their maiden voyage in the Div 1 competition against Ballinger. While the Wonders went down 7 sets to 5 and 60 games to 52, it was an encouraging performance and the first salvo in a cleverly orchestrated plan for greater glory later in the season. A big thanks to Jani for major persistence and various fill ins who bolstered the team on the day. It’s certainly tough in Div 1, but the tennis was played in a wonderful spirit and an enjoyable day was had by all. Wompoos played a very solid Nambas team at Nambour showgrounds in a one-hour rain interrupted Division 2 match on Sunday. The humidity was extreme – more so following the downpour. Tight tennis and some very close tie breakers, but in the end Nambas prevailed, running out winners by 7 sets to 5. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm all welcome. It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Dogs and light bulbs How Many Dogs Does it Take to Change a Light Bulb? 1. Golden Retriever: “The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?” 2. Border Collie: “Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code.” 3. Dachshund: “You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!” 4. Rottweiler: “Make me!” 5. Boxer: “Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.” 6. Labrador: “Oh, me, me!!! Pleeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh” Huh?”

Can I? Pleeeeeeeze, please?” 7. German Shepherd: “I’ll change it as soon as I’ve led these people from the dark, checked to make sure I haven’t missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.” 8. Jack Russell Terrier: “I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.” 9. Old English Sheep Dog: “Light bulb? I’m sorry, but I don’t see a light bulb?” 10. Cocker Spaniel: “Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.” Jem Fleming Landsborough

LEO July 23 - August 22 You will feel empowered as you start this week in a good way to engage brilliantly with others for the next few days. With Mars entering Taurus your focus will be on competitive professionalism. The Full Moon over the weekend sees your emotions more chaotic or confusing. Too many people being dependent brings insecurity. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Mars entering your ninth sector, where it will remain for the next six weeks, pushes you to back up your words with action regarding your beliefs. This is the time to study, travel or make contact with overseas connections. By the weekend the Moon is in your sign and you clarify positions on important matters. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There may be a lot of weekend enthusiasm as you are in for little treats, probably some entertainment with movies or videos. Sunday/ Monday sees the full Moon in Pisces which may cause chaotic emotions, or put you under stress if you have been burning the candle at both ends. A good time to allow yourself to rest and recharge. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Your co-ruling planet, Mars, moves into your opposite sign for the next six weeks, putting you into some heated disagreements. It’s best to actively campaign to keep discussions civil and at the weekend leave time to cool off in a luxurious spa bath! Support and healing comes at the Full Moon in Pisces, your compatible water sign.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 This week, with the Full Moon in Pisces coming up at the weekend, you will have shrewd insights every night into mysterious psychic subjects. Each morning you will probably snap out of your spell. With Mars entering Taurus for six weeks this will put you into the gym, getting your muscles into shape. There is urgency in a professional agenda. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This week you should find the time to make those calls that you have been delaying. Mars, for the next six weeks, makes a good aspect to your Sun sign. You should start feeling energized, expressive and confident. Self assurance occurs in just about anything you undertake. The weekend’s Full Moon brings to light the need for a health pattern. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Mars entering Taurus for the next six weeks sees you put a fine effort and skill into your home and family matters. A domestic project is seen in a new light. Weekend indicates enthusiasm for spending money on something as long as the price is correct for the value and not for useless purposes. The Full Moon around Sunday sees messy emotions. PISCES February 20 - March 20 As Mars now changes signs this week into Taurus this speeds up the pace of your daily life. It makes it lively and active for all the right reasons. Travel and learning a lot will be part of it. The Full Moon on Sunday through Monday can be helpful to your relationships and dealings with other people. You come up with ways to correct problems.

Week beginning 08/03/17 ARIES March 21 - April 20 The Full Moon will be in the sign of Virgo now that the birthdays of the Pisceans are at hand. For your sign, Aries, the emphasis will be in your twelfth sector which means that you may have contacts with a disabled person or a hospital visit. Morning conversations seem to be cynical, probably over political concerns. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 Sounding ideas off your friends can lead to profound insights. Information gathered makes you feel in the loop and as Mars enters your sign for six weeks you have a lot of energy for work and career. However, it should also be put into home renovations and being a good caretaker to your property, including weeding the garden. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 The weekend sees the Full Moon in your not so compatible sign of Pisces. This may exacerbate your emotions because people’s moods may be grumpy, negative, or just down-right depressing! After the weekend Mercury enters Aries and pulls your social affairs into happy friendships. Expect invitations to like minded groups. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Some difficult choices may have to be made due to the Full Moon challenging you over the next two weeks to change your thinking about certain people. You are being faced with learning new skills, but are up to the challenge. You find an appreciation for the need for change to take advantage of the future potential at this time.
