Hi Everyone

W

e report on plenty of official openings in Glasshouse Country News, so this means that I spend a bit of time behind the camera taking photos of ribbon cuttings, sod turning and various methods of unveiling. However this week I have decided I am not waiting for a special guest or local celebrity to take on the honour of declaring the ‘Preparation for Christmas Season’ officially open, and I didn’t want to waste a good bottle of bubbles by smashing it against the calendar (I am thinking about how they launch a boat here). So I have cracked open the bubbly and as I write my introduction to this

edition’s ‘Christmas Feasting’ page, I am just taking small sips from my champagne flute. We do feel it is our duty to scare and shock you with the knowledge that you need to get organised, start writing your to-do lists and get started on your Christmas shopping. With all the new businesses opening around Beerwah in the next few weeks, we won’t have any excuse to head out of Glasshouse Country for any of your Christmas preparations. And while the kiddies out there are now working out that there are only 79 more sleeps until Santa arrives, here at GCNews we call it – 10 editions to go! Regards,

Beerwah Village moving ahead Following months of speculation about how our local community would survive without our Crazy Clarkes, the good news is Bargain Max has been the first of the new stores to open their doors at Beerwah Village last week, and it was clear to see that the locals are happy with what they are offering.

By Lea Parkes

The rest of the new development is a hive of activity with the deadlines looming to see both the Beerwah IGA and Target opening their doors by October 15. The trades people will be working like crazy to make it all happen.

Speaking to the store owner Mitesh, he and his wife Ashika were pleased with the feedback they had been receiving from the customers, who like how spacious the store is, how well laid out and organised it is, with easy access into the store and the great variety of products on offer. The store is employing 13 locals on a roster for the seven days a week they are open, with two of the original Crazy Clarkes employees employed there. There has been additional car parking opened up in the last week outside Bargain Max which has eased some of the congestion of the past few months.

The original TMR plans caused considerable anxiety with local residents, businesses and environment groups. Significant clearing of high value Koala and other wildlife habitat polarised many in the community, leading to a protest group forming to lobby for changes. Initially, TMR would not budge on their preferred road network design, which many tagged as a ‘spaghetti junction’, despite a more moderate option being put forward by respected retired Glenview road engineer Charlie McMonagle. Mr McMonagle’s alternative design addresses the traffic and safety requirements of the project, avoids the forest clearing, has much reduced impacts on local businesses, avoids inconvenience to Palmview residents and at a much reduced cost. However, during a recent discussion with Mr McArdle regarding significant environmental issues raised and the size of the footprint, the Department advised the need for more ‘consultation’. And in an attitude reversal, the Department is also open to suggestions. “What is clear is this design is not final, it is not a done deal,” Mr McArdle said. “Local authorities are still quite keen to hear

the debate on what it should look like and I’m pleased to share they intend to go back to the public for further consultation. “The timing for consultation is yet to be resolved. “I can also confirm a full Environmental Impact Assessment will be undertaken surrounding the immediate area.” Action is already underway, with surveyors being seen hard at work on and around the interchange last week. Mr McArdle said in the meantime local constituents keen to provide immediate feedback are welcome to do so via his electorate office. “We need to work together to get the outcome that we want,” he said. The announcement also follows on from Federal Member for Fisher, Mal Brough taking a stand and proposing an alternative road from the new Bells Creek Road interchange, through the soonto-be developed Caloundra South and linking with Caloundra Road at the Kawana Way roundabout. This proposal by Mr Brough would have taken traffic away from the Steve Irwin Way interchange, and possibly made its massive upgrade unnecessary. The Sunshine Coast Environment Council welcomes the change of heart. “We welcome any revision of the current DTMR plan (as at April 2013) and commend Mark McArdle MP for providing an opportunity for the community to make a timely and meaningful contribution for an improved design,” said spokesperson Narelle McCarthy. “We also welcome the necessary focus on the significant environmental values in this location and the need for better protections.”

Government backs down from motorsports park By Greg Brown In a surprise announcement late last week, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, and local Member for Buderim, Steve Dickson scuttled the State Government’s plans for a dirt bike enduro and moto-cross park in the Beerwah State Forest at Glenview. Local groups have continually supported the need for a motorbike facility on the coast, but questioned the feasibility of the Glenview location, citing issues such as rare and threatened species, endangered habitats and the suitability of the landforms for the high-class facility proposed. The controversial development proposal was also contradictory to studies done by the Sunshine Coast Council. Their study looked at hard-to-locate sports – such as moto-cross – and did not identify the location as a suitable option. Despite these objections, the Minister persisted in pushing forward with the plan, continually stating that the site was suitable and was the best option available. However, back in the edition of April 9, 2014, GCNews raised the spectre of there being a ‘secret’ feasibility report showing that the site and proposal was not suitable or practical. When asked, the Minister’s office would not confirm whether they had commissioned a feasibility study, whether it existed and if it did or did not support the motorsports proposal, only saying that they had undertaken “assessments” and that these were “confidential until the end of the EOI (expression of interest) period”.

How long will it take to sell my property?

Narelle McCarthy from Sunshine Coast Environment Council with one of the old growth habitat trees GCNews understands that attempts to gain access to the feasibility study via Right to Information legislation had been made by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and by a local government in south-east Queensland, however the document was denied to both organisations. A story ran last Wednesday in the Sunshine Coast Daily, where they claimed to have seen a copy of the feasibility report and confirmed that it found the area contained highly sensitive ecological values and the land is unsuitable for a motorsports park. The next day, Minister Dickson revealed in an impromptu statement at an unrelated media event that the proposal for an off-road motorcycling facility in the Mooloolah Logging Area on the Sunshine Coast will not be going ahead as proposed.

In short, there is no exact science to real estate. There are guidelines to follow and experience speaks in volumes when you are trying to gauge the market. What is most important is that there are a few things that will always guarantee a quicker sale. They are price, presentation and position. Let’s firstly look at position … put simply if your property is close to schools, transport, parks and shops then you already have a big tick. This is one thing that can’t be changed though, so if your position isn’t as desirable, then make sure you get the next two right. I’ve spoken previously about presentation. It is imperative because you don’t get a second chance at a first impression, so clean and de-clutter the house, keep the gardens tidy and re-mulch if necessary. And then we have price … this is all important. There is a difference between being on the market and ‘IN’ the market. Remember, negotiating room isn’t always a smart move, because if there’s no one to negotiate with, then you’re just pricing yourself out of the market. A good agent will tell you all of this and more. They should be able to tell you how many days on the market it takes properties in your area to sell and they should have a plan of attack for your entire sale campaign. Tamara can be contacted on 0435 849 590 or by email on Tamara@laurieevans.com.au

The reason given for ending the assessment process for the motorsports park was due to the failure of the selected proponent from the expression of interest process, to meet “stringent conditions” that the government had set for the development. In a subsequent interviewed on ABC FM Sunshine Coast, Motorcycling Queensland general manager Rob Ferguson confirmed that his recent discussions with the government showed the area would never have been suitable with nature of the vegetation and landscape restrictions meaning an ever-decreasing area could be used. The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) has welcomed the announcement by Minister Steve Dickson not to proceed with the proposal to establish an off-road motorcycling facility in the environmentally sensitive area. “SCEC has maintained from the outset that while it supported providing a facility within the region, the site pushed by the state government is the wrong place. The proposal was environmentally destructive, had significant social impact and was economically unviable,” said SCEC spokesperson, Narelle McCarthy. “We are keen to continue working with interested parties and motorcycling enthusiasts to look into options for a sustainably managed and suitably located facility. The process must be transparent, robust and collaborative - fundamental elements sadly lacking in the approach taken by the government on the initial proposal. “The area warrants its transition into conservation estate given its high biodiversity values and importance as a bioregional corridor, so we will also be pursuing this outcome,” Ms McCarthy said.

Locals speak out … ‘Hands off Halls Creek’ A community meeting at Beerburrum Hall on the evening of September 26 delivered a strong message to the State Government … hands off Halls Creek. Organised by Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network and the Beerburrum Innovative Group, the forum was to provide information to local residents about the plans to include Halls Creek as a greenfield urban development site in the future. The large parcel of land between Roys Road and Bells Creek Road – owned by the mega-developer Stockland – is not the most suitable location for future urban growth according to both Sunshine Coast Council and a large array of community groups. On the evening, guest speaker Wiebe ter Bals, Executive Officer with the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) explained the background of the Halls Creek issue and the reasons why it’s not a good idea. “No group or organisation on the coast think that the Halls Creek site is a better option that the alternate area between Beerwah and Landsborough, known as Beerwah East,” he said. “The Sunshine Coast Council has consistently and strongly opposed to the State Government’s insistence that Halls Creek be opened up for urban sprawl. “All the rational arguments point to Beerwah East being by far the best option – giving regards to areas such as environmental impacts, infrastructure development, hinterland

community growth, transport, future planning and maintaining the greenbelt between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. “And through the whole process, there has only been one consistent voice lobbying for the inclusion of Halls Creek – and that’s Stockland, the developer,” Wiebe SCEC Management Committee President Keryn Jones and Wiebe ter Bals show explained. local Beerburrum resident, Bronwyn Bossley, the halls Creek display Even though the general community has been emphatic in “If you’re still not sure why … take a look at previously saying that they don’t want Halls www.handsoffhallscreek.org – where you’ll find Creek, the State Government has asked for more sample letters to use, or come along to the next feedback from locals. community forum at Glass House Mountains.” “State Members Andrew Powell and Mark Keep an eye out in a coming GCNews for the McArdle have had information booths at Beerwah Glass House Mountains forum details. and Caloundra libraries, but we need to make If you’d like to write a ‘Hands Off Halls Creek’ sure that they hear the message loud and clear letter to either Mark McArdle or Andrew Powell, … Hands off Halls Creek,” stated Wiebe. BeeGees Legend in profile

YOUR LOCAL FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC

Phil Shaw Phil grew up in Glass House and started playing club soccer with BeeGees as a young boy in the Under 12’s team in 1968. Phil says that playing soccer meant you could get out and see other areas. “It was a great way to go on a bus and see the region and meet other kids,” he said. “I mean … back then even Landsborough seemed a long way away.” Phil quickly rose up through the grades and started playing first division in 1973 as a youngster of 16. According to those who played at the time, Phil developed into one of the strongest mid-fielders playing in the Sunshine Coast competition, and consistently represented the Sunshine Coast in regional tournaments. “In those days,” Phil reminisces, “there were no match payments. Everyone played for the love of the game. “We had a very strong team. Although we did have a couple of extremely good players, I think it came down to the fact that we were a very closeknit club. “Really, it was like a big family. We all supported and helped each other and socialised together.” At the age of just 19, Phil was called upon to step up into a leadership role after the tragic death of then captain / coach Alan McMaster in 1976. Phil then led the team to three consecutive grand final wins from 1977.

We treat PAINFUL FEET “We trained very hard and put a lot of emphasis on fitness. Being a naturally lazy trainer, I remember – not so fondly – those tough sessions,” Phil said. Phil continued to play for BeeGees for many seasons until injury got the better of him. Phil remembers that the success of the club wasn’t just because of the players. “We had an amazing supporter base. Bus loads of people would travel to watch away matches.” Although not wanting to name any one player for specific mention … “they were all just such good blokes” … Phil did single out Col Pringle, the team manager, as one of his greatest influences. “Over the years, Col was a gentleman, a friend and a father-figure to me and many others. He was the heart and soul of the team and of the club too.” Being a naturally humble, Phil said he firstly felt a twinge of embarrassment when he heard about the honour. “But now I think of it is as a privilege that others think of my efforts in that regard,” he said. Correction Last week, we incorrectly named Allan Smerdon’s parents. It should have read Herb and Ann Smerdon.

NBN Co Community Affairs Manager, Mr Ryan Williams told GCNews that as the broadband rollout enters the Glasshouse region, they will be conducting preliminary investigations for planning and design purposes and begin its community consultation process. “The Glasshouse region will receive the NBN through a mix of technologies,” Mr Williams said. “The fixed wireless network currently proposed for parts of the region will enable residents to realise the benefits of e-health, distance education and entertainment on demand, while businesses can benefit from increased productivity, reduced costs and access to new markets.” Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough said that NBN Co will be conducting further scoping studies in the Hinterland this month. “NBN Co has confirmed their delivery partner, Aurecon has been seeking in-principle interest from landowners for fixed wireless sites in the Glasshouse Mountains region,” explained Mr Brough. “As with previous scoping studies in the region, preliminary investigations are not a commitment of any single location, but represent an important starting point for the NBN network rollout. “I have been assured by NBN Co that any proposed sites identified will be presented to the community for consultation prior to Development Applications being lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council.

“Having attended the community meeting in Maleny recently I understand that some residents are concerned about the NBN project so I encourage you to contact NBN Co on 1800 687 626 with any questions,” said Mr Brough. Mr Williams reconfirmed to GCNews that NBN Co is committed to open and transparent community consultation. “On September 17, we held an information session at Maleny where the local community learnt about the NBN and provided feedback on the fixed wireless rollout in the region,” he said. “This is the start of a comprehensive consultation process in which NBN Co endeavours to strike a balance between community values and providing fast broadband to the community.” During this forum, many of the more than 200 attendees raised their concerns about the possible health issues stemming from the microwave technology used for the transmission of the wireless broadband network. Consequently, NBN Co have organised two follow-up forums on to address community questions on this particular issue. The two sessions – one for people who are free to attend in the middle of the day, and a second forum in the evening, for residents who are available to attend after work, will both be at the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street, Maleny – on Thursday, October 16. The first session is from 1.00pm to 2.30pm, followed up by a second at 7.00pm until 8.30pm.

Tractor tales tall but true

By Greg Brown

A passion for mechanical engineering and farm machinery has taken Maleny’s (Dr) Graeme Quick on many wild and wonderful adventures around the globe over the last 40 plus years. From Iowa, to Norway, Canada, Philippines, Asia, North Korea and Australia, just to name a few. As a result of his research, teaching and mechanical patents, Graeme is admired internationally as a renowned expert on farm engineering and machinery. Those years of experiences and the stories they inevitably cultivate, have given Graeme plenty of fodder for his astounding collection of 15 books he has authored. “My first book was in 1978 titled ‘The Grain Harvesters’. It gives the story of the tools, machines, and systems used throughout history to harvest grain,” said Graeme. “It was 10 years in the making, but has sold over 40,000 copies. Luckily I’ve sharpened up a bit and so it’s only been two years between the latest books,” he said. Following on from Graeme’s last publication ‘Tall but True Tractor Tales’ in 2012, his 15th and latest book – ‘A Reptile On My Tractor, The Rampant Robot and other stories’ – is a collection of 50 humorous tales centred or involving tractors and farm machines in some way. According to Marlene, writing books about tractors is a better option than collecting them – or “having junk lying around the yard,” as Marlene puts it.

Marlene, 'Susie' and Graeme Along with penning the yarns in his latest book, Graeme has allowed himself the guilty pleasure of utilising over 30 cartoon illustrations he has sketched. “Some would say that I wrote this latest book just to get my cartoons published in print … and there may just be some truth in that,” quipped Graeme. Although retired, Graeme remains involved in agricultural industries as a consultant. One current project involves the development of a revolutionary robotic broadacre tractor at Toowoomba. Having recently moved from Peachester in July, Graeme and Marlene are quite proud of the little patch of history they have bought.

“We moved here as our son lives in Maleny and we’ve downsized from 35 acres to six acres at the end of Bryce Lane on Walkers Creek, with the land being part of the original Walker family farm,” Marlene explained. “The old Maleny road originally came through the bottom of our property with the old bridge across the creek. “When they built the new road, some of the big old bridge timbers were used inside and outside the house – which we’re pretty impressed with.” Graeme is settling into ‘Maleny life’ and, although only being on the block for three months, has started a revegetation project along Walkers Creek through a grants program from Council and the Lake Baroon catchment Care Group. And as for his next book … he’s already starting on numbers 16 and 17. “Yes there’ll be a fair few of my illustrations and cartoons in them too,” he said. You can buy the book from Beerwah Newsagency, Maleny Newsagency and Rosetta Books in Maleny. If you would like an autographed copy of any one of Greame’s 15 books email g.quick@bigpond.com or phone 5499 9995. It and many of his previous books can also be ordered through his publisher’s website – www. rosenbergpub.com.au

Maleny Radio Communications Health Forums High speed National Broadband Network (NBN) for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Last month NBN Co held a Community Information Session to discuss with the community its plans to deliver a fixed wireless high-speed broadband network to the Hinterland, including the rural surrounds of Maleny. More than 200 people attended this session on 17 September 2014, and NBN Co is grateful for the time people committed to participate in this first communitywide consultation event. During this session, members of the community raised concerns about the impact of radio communications (radiofrequency signals, or radiofrequency electromagnetic energy) on public health. NBN Co agreed to hold a forum to discuss the science and regulations governing radio communications, and to address community questions on this particular issue.

Health Forum Details NBN Co will hold two radio communications health forums –one for people who are free to attend in the middle of the day, and a second forum in the evening, for residents who are available to attend after work. NBN Co has booked the Maleny Community Hall to make it as easy as possible for local

residents to attend. (*The evening session has been scheduled for 7pm due to a regular taekwondo booking at the Maleny Community Hall). The session will include a short presentation by NBN Co representatives and safety experts on the science, regulation and operations of radio communications networks, including the NBN Fixed Wireless network. This presentation will include the results of a survey of the cumulative radiofrequency energy present in and around Maleny, which was conducted by an accredited and independent radio frequency assessor, and observed by community members on 16 September 2014. At the radio communications health forums, community representatives will also be given an opportunity to present to the audience, and then an hour will be allocated to a question and answer session with NBN Co representatives. We look forward to expanding our discussion with the Maleny community regarding the fixed wireless network, and we hope to see interested residents at the radio communications health forums on Thursday, 16 October 2014.

Session details: Maleny Community Centre – Main Hall 23 Maple St, Maleny Thursday 16 October • 1pm – 2.30pm OR 7pm – 8.30pm

Green Army wants YOU

The Government is putting out the call for the first round of recruits to join the Green Army. The Green Army is aimed to encourage practical, grassroots action to support local environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia, providing training for up to 15,000 young Australians by 2018. The Green Army is looking for enthusiastic 17 to 24-year-olds to join what will become the largest ever team of young Australians supporting environmental action across the country. Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP said that young locals should consider applying for local Green Army projects which are set to get underway in the coming weeks. “If you are a young person on the Sunshine Coast who would like to gain valuable skills, training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields, you should register your interest by calling 1800 780 730 or emailing GreenArmy@environment.gov.au,” he said. Locally, the two projects are at Maleny (the Maleny Community Precinct Restoration and Community Access Project) and at Bells Creek (the Bells Creek Riparian Rehabilitation Project). “Green Army participants will be able to undertake accredited training such as work readiness, conservation and land management, heritage conservation, project and human resource management and heritage trade skills,” Mr Brough said.

Business Buzz with Sonia Clark with President Ken Bannister

Update for October

Chamber Dinner - Thanks to all those Chamber members and guests who came along to last month’s networking dinner at Tuskana’s at the Beerwah Hideaway and made the most of the evening. Chef Eddie and his wife Sharrie McGregor who have recently leased the function area / restaurant did a great job on our buffet dinner and we wish them well as a new business to our area. It was great to see some new faces at our networking events including the new owner from Subway Beerwah Brian Tonge, as well as Bernette Ledger and Debbie Kubler from Beerwah Natural Therapies and Cameron Taylor from the San Training Centre. Networking - When most people fill in their Chamber Membership they list networking as one of the reasons they want to become a member. So our current management committee, with the assistance of Lea Parkes from GCNews, are working to create a combination of different types of networking events throughout the next 12 months. If you have any suggestions or would like to have the spotlight shined on your business by sponsoring an event contact Lea by email, lea@gcnews.com.au Future events - The Chamber’s next networking event will be on October 15, from 5.30pm at Pasta D’Vine, on Simpson Street at Beerwah. Along with the opportunity to catch up with other local business people, our Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski will be giving a guided tour and overview of the ‘almost completed’ redevelopment work in the main street. Plans are also underway for the November 19 event to be hosted by Sunshine Coast Destinations at the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre, we will keep you posted on that. Shift to shopping local competition - We are continuing with our competition and congratulations to the winners for last month $100.00 voucher - Perri-Lee Cardosa, and the two $50.00 vouchers – Avis Pannan and Sue Smoothy. So if you see an entry box in a local business then make sure when you make a purchase over $15.00 that you enter the draw to win a gift voucher. Businesses where you will find an entry box are • Beerburrum Service Centre • Beerwah RSL •Total Microsystems • Travel Treasures • Beerwah Hair and Beauty • Hinterland Body and Soul Membership - The Chamber currently has over 70 members and we are always keen to grow that number, so if you have been thinking about joining why not come along to our next event and find out more about us? The old saying is true ‘You only get out of life what you put in’ so why not become an ‘Active Member’? Don’t just talk about what you should do – just do it! Welcome and congratulations to our newest members – Curves and Kwerky Café at Beerwah and the Eco Lodge at Glass House Mountains.

The Landsborough Chemist delivered free health checks to more than 50 people during National Stroke Week earlier this month as part of an initiative called ‘Know your numbers’. And they are now urging other local residents to take advantage of a quick and free health check to help identify their risk of stroke. The checks include testing blood pressure and reviewing other risk factors including cholesterol, related health conditions, family history and lifestyle. Know your numbers champion Emily Le said when customers come in to the Landsborough Chemist, they will see a dedicated health-check station with everything they need to know about reducing their chance of stroke and understanding more about their state of health. By checking blood pressure and completing a simple questionnaire, pharmacists will be able to help identify people who may be at risk of stroke, heart disease and type-2 diabetes. You can stop in when passing by or have a health check while you wait for your script to be filled, it will only take five minutes, is non-invasive and it may help to save your life. Those at risk will be referred on to their doctor for further advice. One in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime. It is Australia’s second biggest killer and a leading cause of disability and shockingly, the majority of strokes are preventable. The chemist is located at 1 Maleny Street, Landsborough. With the opening of McDonalds at Glass House Mountains late last year, this year is the first time since ‘McHappy Day’ was established 23 years ago, that fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is taking place locally. In the lead up to McHappy Day on Saturday, October 18, local residents are being encouraged to purchase a ‘Helping Hand’ for $1.00 to show their support. Local businesses can also get involved by purchasing ‘helping hands’ in $10.00 and $50.00 increments. One of the store’s staff members who is well known in the local Beerwah / Glasshouse community Jen Lettres (Jen’s dad is Kev from Kev’s Joinery), has decided to enlist support from the local business community and has also organised a raffle that will contribute funds to this important cause, tickets can be purchased in store. In addition to Helping Hands, people can get behind McHappy Day by simply dropping in to McDonalds on Saturday, October 18 to make a donation or by buying a Big Mac on the day ($2.00 from every Big Mac will go to RMHC) or donations can also be made via www.rmhc.org.au/ mchappyday All proceeds from Helping Hands sales are donated directly to RMHC to support their programs.

Enjoy playing golf There are many pleasures in life, but few are better than a perfectly struck tee shot! While golf can be an incredibly enjoyable game, it can also be just as frustrating. Slicing your drive, missing a short putt, or increased pain and stiffness from playing can you leave you feeling pretty low. There are two major reasons golfers should consider chiropractic: 1 – less pain and stiffness before, during and after play; and 2 – better performance and longer drives. For a variety of reasons, including the repetitive rotating action of golf swing, our spine eventually becomes unhealthy and loses its normal alignment and function. Chiropractors refer to this condition as Spinal Subluxation. Once the spine becomes subluxated, pain and stiffness begin to set in and usually remains or progresses until it is corrected. Chiropractors are the only health professionals whose sole focus is on detecting and correcting Spinal Subluxations.

Beerwah – 5494 0499 14

|

|

Spinal Subluxation has 3 main effects: 1. increased pain and stiffness; 2. early spinal degeneration or ‘arthritis’; and 3. nerve irritation. Before his downfall, Tiger Woods had this to say about chiropractic … … “seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I’ve been going to a chiropractor for as long as I can remember. It’s as important to my training as practising my swing.” Like most things in life, golf is more enjoyable when you feel great doing it and can perform at your highest level. That is how life and golf are meant to be! If you’d like to check if chiropractic care may help your golf game, call Dr Braxton at Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499.

Recently Australia Zoo staff got wild in the name of charity – donning jungle animal onesies to launch Cancer Council Queensland’s Relay For Life events this October. With help of some real wildlife, the Australia Zoo team, aptly named Khaki Kritters gathered with Cancer Council Queensland to launch the event in front of Australia Zoo’s monstrous ‘Cameron’ the Croc. The Hinterland Relay For Life, will be held October 18 - 19 at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Relay For Life is an 18-hour event involving teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run overnight, to raise funds for Queenslanders affected by cancer. Cancer Council Queensland's Katie Clift, said they are excited to partner with Australia Zoo and promote the importance of Relay For Life in our community. Australia Zoo spokesperson Lindsay Brown is taking part in the Australia Zoo crew team who have registered for Relay For Life in Brisbane from October 25 - 26. To register for Brisbane and Sunshine Coast Relay For Life events, visit www.relayforlife.org. au or phone the Fundraising Hotline 1300 656 585.

New playgroup for FIFO and DIDO families

While there are plenty of great playgroups throughout Glasshouse Country a special playgroup has been established at Buderim for families that live the Fly In Fly Out or Drive In Drive Out lifestyle. The group meets through the school term, every Thursday from 12.00noon – 2.00pm. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and supportive and encourages families who live this similar lifestyle to come along and connect with other like-minded people. Mons Community Playgroup Centre Coordinator and Peachester local Michelle Poole, has said that the Playgroup has been invaluable not only for children, but also for parents. “Families that live a FIFO or DIDO lifestyle can find it challenging at times, with their partners, or themselves, away from their families for extended periods. “Families that attend this Playgroup have found it useful to share their experiences with other parents in the same situation and create a support network of friends,” Michelle said. The Playgroup would love to welcome new families to come along and participate. For more information please phone 1800 171 882 or check out their Facebook page - Mons Playgroup. www.gcnews.com.au

Sunshine Coast Council is continuing to work with residents who live near a flying-fox roost at Landsborough to find a solution to these difficult neighbours. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said council would hold a community meeting in November to discuss an independent flying-fox consultant’s report prepared for council, which included a range of recommended options. “When it comes to flying-foxes we are discovering there are no hard and fast solutions,” Cr Baberowski said. “No one yet knows why they choose a particular site to roost and certainly more research is needed, Australia-wide, to fully understand their habitat choices. The Landsborough site has three species and seems to be favoured by the Grey-Headed flying-foxes listed as vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. “We believe they’ve been regularly returning to the site since 1965 using it as a summer maternity camp. “They are highly mobile and the national population is fluid, moving up and down the east coast in search of food. “Research shows two individuals fitted with satellite tracking devices made round trips of more than 2000km over a nine-month period. “Our first aim, in the absence of more complete and certain knowledge, is to find the best options that relieve the community impacts associated with this urban flying-fox camp. “Residents in the area will receive a letter in the next three weeks inviting them to the meeting where hopefully together we’ll find solutions that achieve the difficult balance between meeting our environmental management responsibilities and our responsibilities to the residents who live nearby.”

Rhapsody Women’s Choir

The Buderim Male Choir under the Musical Direction of Paul Coppens has taken on a new facet in the form of an associate singing group – ‘Rhapsody, Women’s Choir’. The new group was formed late last year and appeared as a support group at the Buderim Male Choir’s 2014 March concert. In the future there will be opportunities for Rhapsody to perform individually and in combined choirs. Rhapsody has found a place in the heart of the Sunshine Coast to rehearse - the Landsborough CWA Hall - so that it is accessible to women from one end of the coast to the other and the hinterland. Paul and the Rhapsody members are always looking for new women to join their choir. “I have always considered having separate male and female singing groups following a model I experienced in Ballarat, especially where each group would sing diverse styles of music,” he said. Some of the members of Rhapsody have a lot of experience performing in choirs but some had never performed publicly before. Rhapsody is now a very dedicated and exciting group of women who have responded to the challenges of singing a modern musical icon of the 21st century – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Their repertoire also contains original works by Paul Coppens and other modern classics including ‘Lady Marmalade’ and ABBA favourites. The choir will be a part of the World War 1 commemoration, ‘Anzac Dawn’ at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural show next year. Rehearsal on this work will begin next year when the group resumes after the Christmas break. For information about the choir please call Colleen or Paul on 5445 4156. Or check out Paul’s website: www.melbournephilharmonic.com.au

Conditions To ensure all regular contributors are given an opportunity to have their reports printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 250 words or 200 words and a photo.

School News Fun run with obstacles

Contributed by Kylie Merola The Landsborough State School students had a very active finish to the term as they participated in a Fun Run, organised by the school's P&C Association. The obstacle-style course gave students many 'challenges' to complete as they ran laps of the school oval. There were tyres to step through, hay bales to jump over, balance beams, an army net to commando crawl under, pool noodle hurdles, a mud pit to run through and a huge slip and slide. The highlight of the course was provided by Jim from the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade who sprayed the children with fire hoses each time they ran past. The Fun Run was a sponsorship based fundraising event where students were asked to seek sponsorship from friends, family and the local community for taking part. A total of $7,046.73 was collected in sponsorship donations which was a fantastic result and will be used to purchase resources and equipment to benefit the students. Thank you to everyone who supported the event by sponsoring a student or helping out on the day. The school would like to especially thank the generous local businesses who contributed to the Fun Run, either by donating items to include in the Fun Run course or donating money to purchase incentive prizes. These businesses are the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Landsborough Hotel, Landsborough Tyre Service, Armesto's Transport, Beefy's Pies and Sunland Proteins. Thank you also to the school's Adopt-a-Cop, Susan Lowndes, who gave up her time to come along to join in the fun.

Health Health Matters Matterswith Braxton Turnage

Doctor ofTurnage Chiropractic with Braxton Backpack misuse leads to chronic back pain Doctor of Chiropractic

Young children are suffering from neck and back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of overweight backpacks is a contributing factor, according to the American Chiropractic Association. Preliminary results of studies being conducted in France show that the longer a child wears a backpack, the longer it takes for a curvature or deformity of the spine to correct itself, if ever. The results of these types of studies are especially important as more and more school districts remove lockers from the premises, forcing students to carry their books with them all day long. What can you do? • Make sure your child's backpack weighs no more than five to 10 % of his or her body weight. A heavier backpack will cause your child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight. • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders. • A backpack with individualised compartments helps in positioning the contents most effectively. • Bigger is not necessarily better. The more room there is in a backpack, the more your child will carry - and the heavier the backpack will be. • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps. Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side. • Wide, padded straps are very important. • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child's body. Straps that are too loose can cause the backpack to dangle uncomfortably and cause spinal misalignment and pain. • If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child's teacher. Ask if your child could leave the heaviest books at school, and bring home only lighter hand-out materials or workbooks. • Although the use of rollerpacks - or backpacks on wheels - has become popular in recent years, the ACA is now recommending that they be used cautiously and on a limited basis only by those students who are not physically able to carry aTurner backpack. Pets Officially our competition to win the opportunity to have your gorgeous furry and feathered friends in the ‘Best Friends’ coffee table book has come to an end and the last two winners were Vagabond and Panda. Each month when the photos have come in, I have listened at length to all the discussion about the photos, with plenty of ‘oohing an ahhhing’ from the GCNews team. And as it wouldn’t have been fair to let them enter the official competition – this month we are sharing the wide variety of their pets. Yes they are all animal obsessed and most of them have found it difficult to narrow down which is the absolute best photo of their ‘best friends’ to include. For the next few months I was hoping that anyone out there with a menagerie of animals may like to send their photos in to share, and in December we will choose a winner and send you out a prize just in time to fill your pet’s Christmas stockings.

& Animals The pets of GCNews Sophie is a playful one-year-old Golden Retriever, who loves to chew anything she can get her choppers around, and her favourite pastime is licking the cat, pouncing on him, and trying to shove his head in her mouth. Diesel the long suffering puddy tat is a huge five-year-old Himalayan who enjoys sleeping and eating and finding new places to hide from the dog. They really are good mates though! Sophie

Can we find a home for...

Sarah Kiwi is only a new addition to our family, we adopted him from the pound. He has such a cheeky, playful nature, loves to hunt outside and i Kiw also tease his new brother and sister Qee and Miley. Qee is a Labrador X Bull Arab that is known as our mini pony or monster dog, as he is huge! He is such a lovely natured big softy, but loves to chew beds.

Qee & Miley

Miley is a bitsa and the oldest of our animal family, her nick name is Hairy McLary. She is very smart and a Houdini, but just to explore. She loves to lick and jump all over everyone.

Shaz If my home were a castle then Ruby (red cattle dog) would be the queen, ruling over all the animals. Pip (cat) would be the prince, as he is very proper and loves to be noticed. Khaos (blue cattle dog) definitely the jester, as he will find any mischief to get into. And Cera (the snake) would be the princess, not to be disturbed under any circumstance.

Farley Happy, loyal, goofy and affectionate - but enough about the owners. Olive is a 9-year-old labradoodle who likes eating, sleeping and long runs on the beach.

Olive

Pip

Mozart is a male St Bernard x Mastiff x Anatolian Shepherd who is six months old. He is already a very big boy and will grow into a very large dog. He has a wonderful, friendly, playful personality, just waiting for the right person to come along and teach him the ways of a good pup. Mozart will need to learn his basic obedience and have further socialising, but will make a great family pet once the hard work is done. We have included a training class with his adoption fee to help his new family get started on his obedience. Adoption fee for Mozart is $325.00 and he is desexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped and registered. Shorty is a lovely female

Persian x who is eight-yearsold. She has come into our care through no fault of her own, her owner was ill. Shorty likes to sit beside you on the couch and sleep in your bed and doesn’t mind being picked up. She has also lived with a dog in the past. Her longer coat will require regular brushing to keep it tangle free. Adopt this girl for only $50.00 to the correct new home. This fee includes de-sexing, micro-chipping, vaccination and registration. Open: Tue - Sat 9am - 4pm Sundays 10am - 2pm

Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club

The Management Committee of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club advises that Bruce Lange has resigned from his position as Manager of the Club. The Committee is pleased to welcome Kylee Thompson back to the Club in a senior bar staff position. We advise that the pasta / parma night on Wednesday will not be continuing due to low patronage. On Thursday and Friday nights the restaurant will continue to provide its high standard of meals with a revised menu, and on Thursday nights primary school children can eat for free – one child per paying adult. The Committee also wishes to reassure patrons that the Club will continue to provide its usual excellent service, and thanks patrons and members for their continued support of the Sports Club during its recent difficulties. Sign your name or don’t send the letter

I enjoy reading ‘You Said It’, but there are a few things I do not like and never have, one being ‘A nickname’ and the second ‘Name Supplied’. Not supplying your real name means that the letter should go straight into the rubbish bin, not even waste the time reading whatever it is. If the writer feels it is important enough, then sign your name to it, or forget it. Name supplied or withheld, the writer obviously has a problem and should think hard about why he or she is bothered writing anyway. As a reader I am just not interested at all, in fact it is a waste of space that someone else may well have been able to fill at that time. Now this one comes up every now and again, The Poddydodger – Peachester. I am going to assume, something I never did as a police officer, learned early in my 33 year plus career not to do that. I am going to suggest this is a male. Peachester is a rather small community, I have

a couple of friends in the area and it obviously does not worry the local constabulary at Beerwah or Maleny that they have a Cattle Duffer in their midst. Back in the early 1960’s the biggest Poddydodger’s were arrested in the State of Queensland and police were tied up in the Court System for ages and ages. Peachester, your bloke would not be very hard to roundup, so keep your ears and eyes open, so this bloke may well be your neighbour in Peachester. Lost any cattle of late? Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Editor’s response Well Brian I guess that I get the right of reply on this one as at the end of the day I am the one that decides whether the letter goes to print or not. And while I appreciate your opinion, and as is the case with many of the letters that come across my desk, I don’t always personally agree with the content. However, I will always give the writer the courtesy of printing the parts of the letter that focus on issues and not on personal attacks! I believe the letters page is a great place to explore issues and discuss perspectives, not everyone is blessed with the confidence that you and I might have in putting our comments out there, but it doesn’t mean that their opinions aren't just as valid as yours! Lea

Conditions Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Most people operate with two different versions of reality One is factual and objective and is truly representative of the real world. The other is imaginary and subjective and represents what we would like the real world to be. This is why we rarely take actions based on objective data; we tend to live in our own imagined reality. With regards to property? Property owners rely on their own imagined reality or advice given by friends or neighbours, or only listen to information passed on by eager real estate agents. They shy away from reality because it is sometimes too difficult or too painful to accept. Result? The property is hard or even impossible to sell.

The bedroom is a place to rest and unwind and a good night’s sleep is crucial to total wellbeing. A comfortable mattress and bedroom setting is an essential ingredient to sleeping restfully, but getting it right, can be an overwhelming and difficult task. Forty Winks Group Manager, Kara Norris says with almost a third of our time spent sleeping, it’s important the environment in which we do so is appealing, yet relaxing and comfortable. “Consumers are becoming far more educated about the importance of sleep and the different options available in mattress surfaces and bedroom furniture,” says Kara. A number of factors affect how long your mattress will continue to provide optimum comfort and support. “The lifespan will vary considerably depending on its quality; its frequency of use; the wear and tear it receives, and how well it’s been cared for. “As a general rule, a good quality mattress, with normal use, should be expected to last around 7-10 years,” she said. “Be sure to do plenty of research to know the different options available and always head in-store to talk to a bedding expert before making the final purchase.” Updating the bedroom can be easily achieved through a few simple design updates. “Clever colour selections and complimenting surrounding furniture and furnishings can transform a dull and uninviting space into a bedroom sanctuary,” says Kara. Forty Winks bedroom makeover tips: • Bring the outdoors inside with fresh plants, open windows and plenty of light. • Consider clever storage solutions which maximise space. • When choosing colour, consider tones that make you feel comfortable and complement bed linen, carpets, curtains and soft furnishings. • Introduce an accent wall behind the bed for a feature. • Consider the bed linen theming you have chosen. You can highlight some colours from your linen to tie in the whole setting together. • Accessorising with pillows and throws is a great way to introduce bursts of colour. From budget to luxury – Forty Winks has a range of bedding suites available. See advert Page 1.

Jaz Build

Business feature

Recently Jaz Build has been working on a renovation for a special local client who has had to overcome great personal challenges. On Christmas eve 2011, Sandy, an experienced registered nurse, was driving home to Glass house Mountains when she was hit by a drunk driver and her life was turned upside down. Critically injured, she had to give up her long term nursing career. With ongoing mobility issues and given the severity of her injuries, Sandy and her husband Chris, were looking at the unfortunate prospect of having to sell up their much-loved family home of 28 years. With time on her hands and a determination to overcome these challenges, Sandy threw herself into designing a home layout that would suit her long term mobility needs. Referred to Jaz Build by her

local plumber Mark Simpson, Sandy contacted Barry and Jannean at the end of July, and the renovation project to allow the couple to remain in the family home began. It was a collaborative process from beginning to end, said Sandy. “It has been a delight to deal with Jaz build,” she said. Initially Barry from Jaz Build asked what subcontractors the couple wanted to use for the renovation that included a new deck with balustrade, platform stairs, reworked bathroom, toilet and laundry. Sandy and Chris were keen to use local tradespeople – and the whole renovation has included local tradespeople as well as locally sourced services such as timber from the Peachester Timber Mill. Jaz build has taken the couples ideas and brought their knowledge and expertise to provide their clients with a renovation that happily fits their vision, needs and budget. The design is based on earthy colours, and inspired by Uluru, as well as the clients love of timber. A focal point of the renovation has been the Western Australian Jarrah deck with a stunning oak feature wall. The oak feature wall provides a special “touch of the mother land,” said Chris who is English. To suit Sandy’s mobility needs, the deck has been extended out to massive 135 square metres and the new fit-out includes tiling, new roof and ceiling, lights and stairs. Jannean from Jaz Build says that they have

loved working on this project as “it has added to someone’s life and brought them joy.” “We have been happy to come up with solutions that have provided a good outcome for Sandy and Chris, and importantly, allowed them to stay in the family home,” she adds. Given that the job was booked in by July, Jaz Build were able to complete the project with plenty of time left over before Christmas. One consideration that Jannean would like clients to bear in mind, is that if clients would like to enjoy their renovations in time for family and friends to enjoy for Christmas, to please book in earlier in the year. Ideally by June/July at the latest, as they often get inundated in October, with requests to complete jobs in time for the festive season.

Promised loved ones the lawn of their dreams? Do you have family and friends coming for Christmas? Have you promised a loved one the lawn of their dreams in time for summer? Don’t wait and miss out in the end of year rush – get those brownie points in early (and before they go Christmas shopping) by booking in a brand new lawn to revitalise your yard and provide a complete facelift for your garden area. Wild horse Turf is locally owned by Dean and Amanda Smyth who have been providing quality turf for the last nine years. Located at Glass House Mountains, they supply a range of quality domestic, commercial and recreational turf. Dean is always happy to discuss the conditions at your place and offer guidance as to the best grass to suit your individual needs. The secret to great grass is personal service. When you phone Wild Horse Turf, you'll speak to the person who will harvest your grass. Dean will listen to your requirements, and offer a tailor made solution to provide the lawn of your dreams. You'll get great back-up service and

ongoing advice for maintaining your lawn, long after you've laid it. Wild Horse Turf are confident that customers are getting the best quality turf available as they grow it themselves. Turf begins to deteriorate from the moment it’s harvested, so limiting the time from the paddock to your yard is a great way to give your lawn the best start. When you buy turf off the pallet at a hardware store or landscape supply shop, you risk buying turf that has been declining in freshness and quality - which affects the long term viability of your lawn. Wild Horse Turf will cut your turf to order ensuring the freshest grass that will establish in your new backyard faster. They supply and lay Sapphire Soft-leaf Buffalo, Empire Zoysia, Tropkia and Wintergreen Couch. If you are after a low maintenance option then consider Empire Zoysia which requires about a third of the mowing required by the other varieties and also has a degree of resistance to lawn grubs. Wild Horse Turf also offers a comprehensive laying service which includes the application of

water crystals and fertiliser before the turf is laid. For complete confidence and to ensure the highest quality, both the Empire Zoysia and Sapphire Soft-leaf Buffalo are grown in certified paddocks. Wild Horse Turf’s harvesting process uses people not automatic machines. This allows a hands-on approach to quality control, and lets the staff keep a close eye on each and every slab. In short, you’ll get a more consistent turf and a flatter, better-looking end result. If you need help to work out how much turf you may require, jump online at www.wildhorseturf.com and use their turf calculator to get an idea of what you may need. Get your home set for summer

Summer (and then Christmas) is less than two months away – meaning that friends will be dropping over for lazy barbeques, the relations will be coming to stay, and you’ll be looking to spend quality time with your family. Take a look around … are there lots of jobs you need to get started / get finished / get sorted? The yard and gardens need tidying up, carpets need a good cleaning, the spare bedroom needs repainting, the front steps need retiling, the gutters are blocked, the pool is looking murky, the front fence has fallen over, the outdoor furniture needs a facelift ... the list goes on and on. If you’ve got the spare time and some basic understanding of what you’re doing, you can get a lot of these jobs done yourself. There are some really great resources on-line which you can access for free to explain and show you how to do whatever it is that you need done. Surprisingly, YouTube can be a source of fantastic information. People have made instructional videos on just about everything you can imagine. However, take care if they are made in another country, as some of the equipment, rules and regulations are very different to those in Australia. The Beerwah Library has a large range of DIY books which you can borrow and study up on. Take a look at their on-line catalogue to see what’s available. Make sure you research any relevant Council rules which may be applicable. What size garden shed needs Council approval? How high can you build a fence? And if you need advice on hiring equipment, make sure you contact R & R Hire. So with not many weekends until those Christmas guests will be arriving – you had better get started now!

When experts are required

You’ve seen them do it on TV. It doesn’t look that hard, and you were pretty handy in woodwork at high school. You’ve got a saw, a drill and a paint roller somewhere in the shed. Redoing the bathroom can’t be that hard … can it? It is understandable that people want to freshen up their home with a few DIY projects, hoping to revamp the house and yard without breaking the bank. However, there are some circumstances where paying for a professional can save you time and money in the long run … and the old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true. Experts caution DIY’ers to be realistic about their skills, abilities and how much time they have available. According to surveys, 60% of adults rate their DIY skills as very good. Yet 25% of people admit to experiencing a DIY disaster, and 51% of people have at least one unfinished DIY project lingering in their home. Our professional trades people say that a lot of their work is fixing up what DIY’ers have tried to start. This usually ends up costing more money and taking more time than if the tradie was asked to do it to in the first place. Worse still, a novice renovator could end up with a serious injury if something goes wrong. So before you get your Bob the Builder tool belt on, ask yourself these three questions: 1. What experience do I have? Just because you’re not afraid to take something on, doesn’t mean you have to. 2. Do I really have the time to get it all finished? Think of the inconvenience of a job taking three weeks instead of three days. 3. Do I have the right tools? If you have to buy something that you’ll most likely only use once – it’s probably not worth it. Supporting our local trades and services means that you are helping keep local people employed, which in turn keeps our local economy turning over. Lifecycle of a DIY project 1. Inspiration – you spot a project in a magazine and think ‘my bedroom will look like that.’ 2. Optimism – you buy all the tools and begin your project with confidence and enthusiasm. 3. Confusion – you’re not too sure about what you’re doing, but you do it anyway. 4. Despair – it’s all gone wrong! 5. Resignation – you accept defeat. It’s time to seek professional help.

Is your home ready for summer?

With the warmer months upon us and dare we mention it - Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to start preparing your home for summer. Security doors and flyscreens may need repair or replacement and areas that you don’t have screened may need a new solution. Ever popular are screened enclosures which add extra living space by allowing you to open your home to your outdoor area, letting in the breezes without compromising security. Also popular are outdoor and external awnings. Custom made awnings are the perfect solution for keeping your home cool in summer. By reducing the heat reaching your windows, you can significantly reduce the temperature inside your home as well as keeping your cooling costs down. There are so many new and innovative products available in the external range that will compliment and add value to your home. Standard Automatic Roll Up awnings are easy to use and simple in design; this versatile and attractive awning is an excellent choice for ground floor windows for privacy and heat protection. Easy function, self-locking arms enable simple shade adjustment, and when the sun goes down, the awning can be rolled away neatly into a head box. Side channel awnings are perfect for decks and verandahs for privacy and weather protection. Custom made to suit your needs, straight drop awnings maximise your outdoor areas all year round, without creating a visual barrier. Multi skilled local family electrical business Mingleford Electrical Contractors based at Beerwah are a small family run company with many years of experience. They have been providing electrical services to the Sunshine Coast for over 20 years and cover a range of electrical services for both domestic and commercial jobs. This includes general electrical work, appliance and solar repairs, air conditioning, refrigeration and commercial laundry equipment. Originally trading as D&K Electrical, the company was the first major whitegoods warranty service agent on the Sunshine Coast and they have strived to build up a strong reputation of friendly, prompt and quality service over the years. Along with local domestic clients, Mingleford Electrical Contractors have a variety of current commercial contracts including work for Spotless Services (defence base maintenance) and the Sunshine Coast Council as preferred and authorised electricians. The team also offer solar repairs and have installed, repaired

and maintained many systems throughout the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas. Both founder Andy Aitchison and son Brad are multi licensed tradespeople; holding full electrical fitter mechanic licences as well as full refrigeration, LPG and electrical contractor licences. A unique point of difference is that Brad’s wife Sarah is currently also working towards becoming a fully qualified electrician. This will provide a pleasant change in a traditionally male dominated industry. It is estimated that there are less than 50 female electrical apprentices currently in Australia, and so the team at Mingleford are thrilled to be able to support Sarah’s progress towards gaining her electrical licence. Female customers may also find themselves more comfortable dealing with a woman who is on the same wavelength. With a staff of seven who all reside locally on the Sunshine Coast, all members of the team

Summer is all about fun in the sun, and enjoying the great outdoors. But indoors things can become quite uncomfortable. Selecting the right window covering will considerably reduce the harmful effects that sunlight will have on you and your furnishings as well as keep your home cooler.

ell that is it – time to throw my hands into the air and say, it’s official! The countdown is now on for Christmas. We kind of have an unwritten rule here at GCNews that we try not to include too much about the idea of Christmas until at least October, and then once the first mention has been made, that’s it, we declare the ‘Preparation for the Festive Season’ now open. We are starting off kind of gently with this one pager on ‘Christmas Feasting’. We do feel it is our duty to scare and shock you with the knowledge that you need to start booking all of your tasty Christmas treats now as we don’t want you to be disappointed. And most importantly, you need to get busy organising Christmas parties, dinners and catch ups with friends, workmates and family. If it is a nice relaxed lunch with a great view

Let your inner artist out to play

By Lea Parkes In last week’s edition of GCNews we brought you a story about Glass House Mountains artist and silversmith Melanie Augustin. Melanie is one of the members of the Glasshouse Country Artist Trail who will be participating in their group exhibition as part of the Glasshouse Country Festival on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26. GCNews recently caught up with anotherGlass House Mountains artist Neville Fields who is the founding member of the group. Neville explained that between the group membership they have an exciting mix of talent and approaches to a variety of media. So they decided

as part of their event, to offer a variety of creative workshops, allowing participants to let their ‘Inner artist’ come out and play. Neville said there were so many ways to express yourself creatively, and members of the Glasshouse Country Arts Trail group are eager to share their tips, skillsand experience with others. “This promises to be a fun and interesting weekend, with lots of opportunity to learn a new creative technique, or explore a different artistic medium,” Neville said. The ½ day workshops include, linoblock printing, wet felting, painting, cyanotype printmaking, how to take better photos, mixed media collage and Japanese kimono flower brooches cost is $25.00 each plus $5.00 for materials. The group exhibition and workshops are being held at the Glasshouse Scout Hall, opposite the Sports Club, Steve Irwin Way and the workshops run either between 10.00am – 1.00pm or 1.00pm – 4.00pm, for a schedule take a look at their blog at www.glasshousecountryartstrail.com.au

The group are also offering a 10% discount for early bookings made by Friday, October 10, all bookings can be made by emailing neville@artatglasshouse.com or phoning Neville on 0438 525 749.

The fourth annual Alan Reading Memorial Art Awards were held in the Auditorium at the Maleny State School on Friday, September 27 and an exhibition of the work continued throughout the week. Maleny artist Lyn Reading and her daughter Michelle Maksimous from Glass House Mountains created the awards in honour of Lyn’s late husband and Sherin’s dad Alan. All three of them had a passion for art and after

Alan passed away in 2011 Lyn and Sherin decided to establish the awards to keep his memory alive. Glass House Mountains artist Una Robinson attended the opening night. She said with 155 artworks in different mediums in eight different sections, judge John Morrison had a very challenging task, and he made presentations to those winners that were present on the night. “It was interesting to see that four of the 1st prize

winning paintings of eight different entry sections were worked using pastels, beautiful work indeed,” she said. There were also some very good artworks exhibited by some of tomorrows up and coming artists in the kids and youth section. Each year funds raised from the event go to a local charity. This year the funds will go to Aussie Farmers Foundation and the Chaplaincy program at Maleny High School.

Ancient teachings in a modern world

Dzogchen Master ChögyalNamkhaiNorbu is an important present-day representative of the tradition of the Dzogchen (Great Perfection) Teachings. This ancient teaching is also referred to as ‘Mind Yoga of Great Ease’, and he will be visiting Glass House Mountains from October 20 – 26. For 50 years he has delivered the message that it is possible to live harmoniously, even in the midst of chaotic, modern daily life and to lead a lifestyle that is relaxed, co-operative and peaceful. An ancient text, known in the Tibetan Language as the RigpaiKhujug and translated as ‘Cuckoo of Awareness’, will be introduced during this time at Namgyal Gar North, on the Maleny Woodford Road. This site is the main base of the Dzogchen Community in Australia and is adjacent to the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout and nearby Lookout Cafe. School leaver’s guide

Do you know a student’ who is just about to finish high school? We have developed a School Leavers’ Guide to provide students and their parents with details on education and training options, finding employment, financial support and other useful information. We will be distributing copies to the high schools in the electorate over the next month. The guide can also be found on my website www.malbrough.com.au

More Federal Government support for local road network

In addition to the significant work already underway on the Bruce Highway I am happy to announce that the Sunshine Coast Council will receive $14.6 million over the next five years as part of the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery programme. The funding will allow council to undertake local road construction and street repairs, with the 2014-15 allocation over $2.4 million. The great thing about this programme is that council can make road spending decisions themselves, based on local needs which provides greater flexibility and allows infrastructure investment to be timely and of most benefit to the community. I am confident that residents of the Sunshine Coast will experience positive impacts from this funding, improving safety and providing better transport links across the region.

National Broadband Network – Fixed Wireless

On September 17 I attended a community meeting on the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Maleny. At this meeting I noticed that much of the community thought that NBN’s work in the Hinterland is much more advanced than it actually is. I want to assure the community that no contracts with landowners have been signed. Investigations into fixed wireless tower sites are in the very early stages and decisions on the locations of the proposed towers are still 12 – 18 months away. Any identified site will need to go through the Development Application process with final approval in the hands of council. Any proposed site identified by NBN Co will be presented to the community for consultation. If you have any questions about the process please contact NBN Co on 1800 687 626.

Charity Cricket Match

Backyard cricket had never seen so many politicians in one team until the annual match between my Celebrity XI and the Maleny Maulers at Aub Cork Oval in Maleny last Saturday. After hearing for years what a great time we have at this annual charity match, many of my colleagues were itching to get in on the action and be part of my 2014 team. Truth be told I think many of them were intrigued by the idea of playing cricket in their pyjamas (the team uniform) and may I say one team member even donned a 'Onesie' for the occasion. I am happy to report that we gave it our best shot but even a team full of Cabinet Ministers couldn’t beat the Magnificent Maleny Maulers. Well done to all of the Maulers and their Captain Simon Denver on a spectacular game so much fun was had by players and spectators and at the end of the day that is what it is all about. Thanks to all of the people involved with organising the event, especially Gail Denver for your tireless commitment to making this game a huge success. Anyone who still wishes to make a donation to Lung Foundation Australia can do so by visiting www.lungfoundation.com.au.

You can contribute to the Domestic and Family Violence Taskforce

Domestic and family violence is a very real problem in our community. Every day, an average of 175 reports of domestic and family violence are investigated by police across our State. It is with this in mind that the Premier established the Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland, chaired by the Hon Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO. The way our community responds to domestic and family violence is an important consideration of the taskforce so I am encouraging you to have your say and contribute your thoughts. Submissions can be made by emailing DFVTaskforce@premiers.qld.gov.au and more information can be found at www.qld.gov.au/ dfvtaskforce.

Great results for our littlest locals We’re very fortunate to live in a country where basic necessities like public schooling and health are readily available to each and every one of us. Education is a big priority for the State Government and I’m pleased to share that five hinterland public schools in the Caloundra Electorate have received an extra boost to education funding for 2015. Beerwah High, Beerwah Primary, Glenview Primary, Landsborough Primary and Mooloolah Primary will all share in more than $1.5 million allocated for the Caloundra Electorate thanks to the Great Results Guarantee initiative. It’s $600,000 more than last year’s allocation and will go directly towards improving literacy and numeracy results for our children. Well done to our local schools and keep up the hard work.

More consultation on Caloundra Interchange The local Transport and Main Roads Department have confirmed more consultation will take place regarding the Caloundra Road interchange upgrade as part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade Planning Study (Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway). I’m pleased to report a full Environmental Impact Assessment will also be undertaken surrounding the immediate area. This is good news for locals and I encourage you all to take a look at the current planning study and if you would like to, in the meantime, provide feedback directly to my office. Visit http://www. tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/B/Bruce-HighwayUpgrade-Planning-Study-Caloundra-Road-toSunshine-Motorway.aspx

All completed surveys and feedback will be collated and forwarded to the Deputy Premier’s office in due course. Again, if anyone has any questions or would like to provide additional feedback please do not hesitate to contact my office. Caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au

Questions about taking out an investment loan With the housing market in Australia so strong and home prices on the up, it is no surprise that many people have decided to take out home loans for investment in droves. These allow people to offset taxes against rental yields, and watch a property appreciate in value over a long period of time. What’s the worst that could happen? Overall, the likely worst situation you’ll find yourself in when investing in a property is failing to find good tenants, thus, not making any money on your purchase. Good maintenance and advertising can fix this by appealing to tenants all year around, www.gcnews.com.au

but it’s important to make sure you can cover mortgage repayments without rental income before you take the plunge – just in case. How do you maximise growth? The key to this is research. Take an in-depth look at the area you want to invest in and find out how much growth has occurred for rental yields and overall property value. Is it an area that will have high rent increases, or perhaps one that will be a slow-burner, giving you strong home value returns a decade from now? Depending on your financial situation, you will want different things. Talk to experts and make sure you invest wisely and for the future.

Which kind of loan do you take out? This depends on how you wish to gear your property, whether you intend to maximise rent gains or to negatively gear your property and have it be tax deductible. However, an interest-only loan is often recommended for investment home loans, especially if you intend to change items in your portfolio relatively regularly. This allows you to pay off interest, claim tax deductions and, if you invest intelligently, make profits from rises in property value. What if I don’t have enough to deposit on a new loan?

If you already own property, you may be able to leverage equity from this as part of an investment loan on a new house. A mortgage broker can fill you in on the details, as well as help you choose a suitable type of loan for your next move. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Plenty of planting

The Friends of Cahill Scrub enjoyed their recent morning planting about 500 trees and shrubs during the Council sponsored community tree plant. The group are always keen to encourage new members to their activities. They were pleased to have one more enthusiastic resident come along for the first time who thoroughly enjoyed the chance to plant trees (instead of hacking away at lantana) and they are looking forward to the next tree plant.

M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month Midyim

Austromyrtus dulcis This spreading low shrub is a very diverse plant found from coastal sandy soils to the Blackall Range. As a garden specimen Midyim can be pruned to form a low formal hedge making it great for pathways and garden borders. Midyim has white fluffy flowers with edible grey, spotted fruit to 10mm. You will have to beat the wildlife to the fruit as they are very tasty. The new leaves often have bronze / purple flushes and fine grey hairs giving the appearance of velvet, typical of this species. Come into Mooloolah Native Nursery and have a look at the very broad selection of native endemic plants that we have on offer, you will be pleasantly surprised at the range of plants available.

Say ‘Hello Cocky’

If spending time in the great outdoors helping one of Australia’s most beautiful and threatened native birds interests you, read on. The fifth annual Glossy Black-Cockatoo Birding Day will take place on Sunday, October 19. It aims to unravel vital information about the population size and distribution of threatened Glossy BlackCockatoos throughout South East Queensland and North East NSW. Sunshine Coast Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the work of volunteers during the annual event was building a database that would aid the future survival of the species. “The Glossy Black Cockatoo is listed as ‘vulnerable’ under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act so every bit of information we can gather for our experts is important,” she said. “I urge everyone to jump online and visit www.glossyblack.org.au and take a look at some of the previous years’ data that’s been gathered about these beautiful birds. “By volunteering to participate on October 19 you can contribute to the continuation of this fantastic cause and enjoy a great day out in our magnificent region at the same time.” To register for the Glossy Black Cockatoo Birding Day email your details to mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Identification and information workshops for volunteers will be held at: • Caloundra – Thursday, October 16, 3.00pm – 5.00pm at council admin building, Omrah Avenue • Nambour – Thursday, October 9, 5.30pm – 7.30pm at Fred Murray Building, Currie Street Booking for these workshops is essential and can be done via council’s Community Hub: http://community.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/events

Craig Moody Glasshouse Country Anglican Church This is my first contribution to Glasshouse Country News, as I have only recently moved into the area. I was commissioned as the parish priest of the Anglican parish of Caloundra and Glasshouse Country on Wednesday, September 24. Born in Brisbane, I have taught in three Queensland high schools and since ordination as a priest in 1989, served in Anglican parishes in Newcastle, Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Chermside, Dubbo and now in this present parish. Ever since I was six months old in 1954 I have holidayed at Caloundra, coming here as a newly-wed with my wife Jenny in 1976, and bringing the children for holidays over the years. Coming here, with the beautiful glasshouses and their hinterland dominating the skyline, is like coming home to a family place. The sense of being a part of a huge family in the Church was emphasised for me at my commissioning. Among those gathered were GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

people from other Christian denominations, from other Anglican parishes, from Churches in which I have been the parish priest, clergy who have overseen my training and people to whose training I have contributed. A man who served as a missionary with my father-in-law in New Guinea attended, as did the son of the Bishop who ordained me, as well as a Church warden from a previous parish with whom I attend Qld Reds rugby games whenever possible. In an age of people experiencing a loss of identity, a lack of connectedness with extended family and the wider community, the Church is a place of belonging. The sense of belonging is deeper than community or even extended community. Church joins us with others into a relationship with God expressed in worship as a gathered community and in pastoral care for each other as Christ’s body on earth. Church offers us a human and holy fellowship which has stood the test of two thousand years, some of which is beautiful, some sad, some deeply flawed by human sin. Through it all, God’s love stands as the heart of the Christian family, welcoming others and nurturing those who journey through life within it.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Contributed by Frank Doonan The first game of the season for the Glasshouse cricket club at home was played by the under 12’s on Saturday and the lads looked good. It was a great start for the season scoring 5 for 117 to beat Caboolture 4 for 103. Three Under 10’s took the field to support the Under 12’s – Bailey Baartz, Riley Schultz and Roman De Clara. Four players retired – Ryan Aldred retired 29, Riley Schultz, Josh Swanson and Leo De Clara. Bowling results – Hayden McAllister 3 for 17 and Ryan Aldred 1 for 4. Roman De Clara took two fabulous catches and Josh Swanson did a terrific job as the wicket keeper. Our U16’s have two young women playing for the Glasshouse team. A convincing win over Maroochydore Red, only losing one wicket for 144 off 28 overs compared to Maroochydore’s 7 for 138 off 30 overs. Our batting performance was an impressive 78 for Jarred Adamson (n/o), Dylan Lamb caught for 39 and Zeldine Barnard 7 (n/o). This was supported by a strong bowling attack of Lachlan Guest (2 for 12), Erin Wilkinson (2 for 40) and a wicket each for Chris Setter and Zeldine Barnard. Some great catches by Cody Smith and wicket keeper Damien Thompson helped to seal the match. This is the first home game for the year for the senior men’s team with youth and some season veterans. The boys took on Gympie, who over the last few seasons have been a major force in the competition. We went into bat first and at lunch we had a solid score of 2 for103. The boys finally scored 211 with J Shultz 67 and H Owen 51. At the end of play Gympie were 3 for 90 (J Shultz 3-40). This game is in the balance with Glasshouse just in front. The second days play starts next Saturday at 10.30am, so if you enjoy cricket come down and support the boys. The Seconds played Burpengary at Burpengary, scoring a first day total 207 (W Dolden – 68,L Moffett – 46 and S Killick – 32). Third Division is playing at Tewantin/Noosa and this is a turning into a tight game. Our boys scored 97 (L Strachan – 52), then with ball they bowled out Tewantin/Noosa for 120 (M Schofield 4 for 10 and A Dreghorn 2 for 4). Fourth Division have a struggle on their hands but the boys will give it their best shot. Their first innings total was 110 and in reply Maroochydore declared 4 for 140. In our second innings Glasshouse are 2 for 10.

Under 12 team

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club

Contributed by Jenny Kelly We had 70 girls come out in lovely spring weather to play for our final week day Monthly Medal. As always, the trophies were provided by our Club Professional John Mellish, who is a great supporter of the ladies competition. The winner of Division 1, with a terrific score of 68 Nett was Karen Gannon. Karen was followed by Lea Garner on 73 Nett. Sonia Kenway had the best Gross with 82 off the stick, and also won the putting with 26 putts for the round. Kathy Moffat won her first Medal in style with a great 68 Nett to win Division 2. Runner up was a visitor from Headland, Jenny Pirini who won on a count back with a score of 73 Nett. Jasmin Parkes took out the Gross in Division 2, again on the dreaded count back, with 93 off the stick. Division 3 winner was Carol Fraser with an impressive 69 Nett. Carol was closely followed by Di Smith on 70 Nett. Julie Hughes won the Gross with 104 off the stick. Nearest to the pins went to Cindy Godfrey on number 2, Lyn Wroe on the 5th, and Jenny Pirini on the 16th. Division 1 on the 18 was won by Karen Gannon, while Lydia Costello was closest in Division 2. The random birdie hole was pretty safe on the 12th. The ball rundown went to 75 Nett. We are hoping for fine weather next week when we hold our Ladies Open Day. The course is in beautiful condition so we should have a great day. Until then stay safe and good golfing.

The week’s winners Division 3 Carol, Division 2 Kathy and Division 1, Karen with Club Pro John

Why did I get divorced? Well, last week was my birthday. My wife didn't wish me a happy birthday. My parents forgot and so did my kids. I went to work and even my colleagues didn't wish me a happy birthday. As I entered my office, my secretary said, ‘happy birthday, boss!’ I felt so special. She asked me out for lunch. After lunch, she invited me to her

Week beginning 08/10/14

with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com LIBRA September 23 – October 22 What an interesting week you are going to have as there is a full Moon eclipse opposite your sign! That Aries energy indicates a need for change and to embrace the new. In doing so, it may come at the cost of upsetting the old status quo. The weekend indicates good days to go on an outing and entertain. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You may find sub conscious forces ready to burst out so be careful with your physical well being if anger gets the better of you. This eclipse week may see that what gets said under this tension could leave lasting scars. Mercury retrograde may reinforce your classis stoic silence. Avoid perpetuating old wounds. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Lucky results can come from meeting physical, intellectual or creative challenges with the enthusiastic full Moon eclipse. It promises to be lots of fun! Maintaining poise in your social or romantic life is put to the test as you have a sudden urge to move for freedom. A week that shakes you out of your compliancy. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This week sees the Cardinal sign trigger of the full Moon in the eclipse backed up by the erratic planet Uranus. It may set off upsets at home or work but perhaps it could be the key to a fresh new start. Mercury moves retrograde returning into your sector of business and public standing seeking a silver lining.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The lunar eclipse under an Aries full Moon certainly signals changes in the realm of a project dear to your heart. The planet Uranus, also in Aries, emphasises your fondest hopes and wishes. There are many cooperative allies who want to help you achieve your aims and change the world for the better. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Bravely pursue a business crusade as the full Moon lunar eclipse checks out your sense of self worth and looks into your jointly held money and property. Great success is achieved by clearing away debts and balancing accounts. It’s a very good time for a budget and discovering your hidden assets now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This full Moon week puts the focus squarely on you, along with any decisions that move you to a new adventure, or impacting a new relationship. Some worrisome news or testy discussions could cloud the picture where spending or expenses are concerned. Be satisfied with creating practical values now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This full Moon week is the trigger that will force a choice between that which is going on privately, or internally. Take a break from relationship pressures. After the Moon leaves the eclipse in Aries and moves into your sign, you should, by the weekend, avoid stubborn positions. Have regular health check-ups.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 What a week this will be for you as the eclipse on Wednesday will generate plenty of excitement in your social and personal life! Some of it will be exhilarating, some of it jarring, but none of it boring. Get your points across in person. Add to your list of contacts. Improve communication through sharing news. CANCER June 22 – July 22 When eclipses cross your path it is your reminder that you are in the cross hair of trouble in professional and domestic relationships. This week you also have the golden moment to shine at work and to earn some money. The Moon offers you the kind of calm, steady pace you prefer, so avoid any stubborn stance. LEO July 23 – August 22 Social matters are accentuated with the eclipse this week being in the sign of Aries. Things get off to a lively start, especially on future plans, travel and where neighbours are concerned. You will ride the waves of fastpaced changes that come your way. Invitations flow, so be ready to go at a moment’s notice. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The full Moon eclipse this week is an emotional trigger to your economic and financial base. Under this Cardinal sign it’s a new start! By Friday a Taurus Moon will steady you bringing a calmer environment than you have experienced recently. Mercury retrograde refers you to review events of the last month.

She came out five minutes later with a birthday cake, my wife, my parents, my kids, my friends, and my colleagues all yelling, ‘SURPRISE!" while I was waiting on the sofa... naked.
