ell it is that time of year again; yep the lead up to what will be our third annual local ‘Scarecrow’ competition. For the GC&M News office that first year it was easy, we went with a Superman Scarecrow. Well after all, Clark Kent was a journalist, when he wasn’t wearing his lycra costume and saving the world. So the second year we went with Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent, in his stylish suit and tie, and a great set of glasses. Ok the theme has been established, but where to now? Or should it be wear to now, what sort of outfit do we require? Of course this year’s scarecrow will be ‘award winning Journalist – Lois Lane’ she had a pretty no-nonsense fashion style, so that shouldn’t be too hard. However, I have done some google ‘image’ searching and have worked out the ultimate accessory for Lois, a ‘cassette recorder’ with a shoulder strap? So if anyone thinks they have one of these high tech 1970s devices laying around our Lois Scarecrow would love it! If not, expect to see Lois with a notepad and pencil in hand – and a far off distant look on her face as she pines for her super hero boyfriend. Regards,

Local News Not so scary workshop So it is the first day of school holidays and it’s raining – well that wasn’t a problem for a group of enthusiastic children and their mums who headed along to the scarecrow making workshop at the Peachester Hall. The workshop was conducted by Janelle Steensen, after taking on the job of co-ordinator of the Beerwah Charity Sports Scarecrow competition two years ago, she is now affectionately known locally as the ‘Scarecrow Lady’. Janelle is always keen to share her skills, knowledge and expertise as a scarecrow maker with others, and judging by the day’s results she has clearly inspired those that attended with some of the amazing creations that emerged.

BOQ staff dresses up sick kids

Last Friday BOQ Beerwah staff ditched their bank uniform in favour of dressing up in costume to raise awareness and money for their children’s hospitals fundraiser ‘Banking on our Kids’.

The appeal raises vital funds for Children’s Hospital Foundation Australia, the national fundraising partnership that supports five of the country’s major children’s hospitals. BOQ’s annual July appeal, now in its 11th year raises funds that help give sick Aussie children the chance to grow up and achieve their dreams. BOQ Beerwah Owner Manager Jeff Willis said it was good fun to make customers laugh while donating to a good cause. “For our dress up we cast our minds back to our own childhood dreams and what we wanted to be when we were younger,” Jeff said.

“It certainly surprised some of our customers when they found their usual bank tellers had turned into firemen, ballerinas and all sorts! “But it was a great way to spread the word about our Appeal and that’s really what this is all about, raising funds for our country’s children’s hospitals – even if it means commuting to work and getting some funny looks!” All donations from the appeal go directly towards funding vital equipment, research into breakthrough treatments and ultimately cures through the Children’s Hospital Foundation Australia who supports the five major children’s hospitals in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Maleny’s new golf course opened in style
Sore Feet?
After almost 15 years of planning, stage one of Maleny’s community golf course has finally been completed with the first nine holes formally opened. Club president Dr Max Whitten said stage one of the course had been built largely by volunteers from the club’s membership at a cost of about $750,000, including $450,000 from Council’s Capital Works program, plus donations of money and professional time. “We’ve shown that building a golf course need not be an expensive exercise in a town like Maleny where the community is large enough to boast an abundance of natural talent, but small enough for residents to be able to help out and make a real difference,” Dr Whitten said. “For many of our volunteers, involvement in course construction has proved somewhat of a ‘soft landing’ into retirement after busy and successful careers.” Dr Whitten said the club had also shown that development of a golf course could deliver positive environmental outcomes such as the rehabilitation and protection of wetlands and native flora and fauna. Cr McKay, who has worked with the golf club members for the past seven years to get the project to this point, said she was in awe of their dedication. “My congratulations go to everyone who has helped create a quality course like the one we now have here in Maleny,” Cr McKay said. “You cannot praise them enough for what they have managed to achieve thanks to a huge

The Australian Labor Party has endorsed local business owner Bill Gissane as the Labor candidate for Fisher in the forthcoming federal election. Fifty-seven-year-old Mr Gissane lives in Buddina, a place he has called home for the past four years. Having stood for Labor in Fisher in the 2013 federal election and in Maroochydore in the recent state election, Bill has spent countless hours speaking with residents across the region and witnessing first-hand the effects Tony Abbott’s cruel cuts are having on locals. “The residents of the Sunshine Coast and hinterland are the forgotten people of the LNP,” said Mr Gissane. “The reward for continually returning LNP members at federal and state levels has been constant neglect, a lack of funding for vital health and education services and rising unemployment. “I’m honoured by the opportunity to once again
Labor candidate for Fisher Bill Gissane stand for Labor here in Fisher and will ensure the concerns of the Sunshine Coast are heard loud and clear down in Canberra.” ALP Queensland State Secretary Evan Moorhead said Bill Gissane’s vast business knowledge and proven fighting attitude would make him a great advocate for the people of Fisher. “Bill Gissane has a proven track record of standing up for the Sunshine Coast,” he said. “Mal Brough and the LNP have ignored the needs of this region for far too long but Bill will be a strong local voice.”

Your Hinterland’s largest stockist of practitioner brands Judy Timm, Naturopath and Leanda Weynton, Herbalist / Nutritionist, and co-owner of The Healthy Guru Having both worked in the industry for many years, practitioners Leanda and Judy have seen many products come and go, both in retail and practitioner brands. There is always a new fad or an “in thing” in the health industry and it can take away from the focus of what is quality and what is going to work for an individual situation. The integrity that comes from practitioner brands brings not only a higher grade quality of product material, but also the practitioner companies bring strong clinical trials and advanced methods of prescribing. As health professionals, it is our priority to prescribe the best quality methods for treating our client’s health. By using these advanced formulas and blends they have profound results with the client’s health outcome. Practitioner products can be more cost effective because the blends are higher in strength or in activated form; therefore a lesser dosage is needed for optimal results. The client saves both in cost and in time by now having a product specifically advised for their health.

It’s been a blast
By Lea Parkes
For the past 10 years Brendan and Melissa Edwards and their children have made Glass House Mountains their home, and for the last eight and a half years Brendan has been the Pastor for the Glasshouse Country Community Church. Sadly for their church and the local community, they are bidding us a heartfelt farewell for an opportunity for Brendan to take on the role of Pastor at Amamoor, where the couple come from, and where both their extended families still live. While Brendan has been very committed to his work with the church, many locals will also know him for the many other ways he has been involved in the community. He has been the Pastor for the Glasshouse Country RSL, he was a ‘Superdad’ and performed in the band at many local functions, on occasions he worked at the Big Mower at Beerwah, and more recently he had completed his training for the Landsborough Rural Fire Service. I also remember regularly reporting in the paper when he and a group of his church members performed ‘backyard blitzs’, helping people, who because of illness or personal challenges, needed a hand to get their gardens under control. These ‘backyard blitzs’ weren’t about creating water features and balinese gardens like the TV show, they were about hard work, clearing, mowing, trimming and all the effort that goes with making a garden presentable. For those in need it was a genuine act of kindness, and Brendan was always happy to share his time, and encourage others to help out.
Pastor Brendan Edwards on Remembrance Day This approach seemed to reflect the consistent way he tackled most tasks with passion, care and real concern for others. Brendan wanted the community to know that he wasn’t looking for an opportunity to leave Glass House. He has loved his time here, however the opportunity came up and he felt in the bigger picture, that it was the right time for their family to return ‘home’. He also feels that he has laid some great foundations for the church and that it is now the right time for someone else to lead it in the next phase of development. And as Amamoor is still not that far away, it won’t be the last we will see of Brendan, his final service here will be this Sunday night at the Glass House Mountains School Hall at 4.30pm. He has also put the invitation out if anyone wants to join

Soundshower
Sound Healing Events
Soundtuning (individual treatments only)
7pm - 9pm, Friday 24th July 2015, Beerwah Community Hall
This journey combines chimes, Tibetan bowls, flutes and vocals. During a session you will be invited to lie down and immerse in vibrations created by these special instruments. Flutes and voice are used to create a magical musical journey and overtones charge the brain and energise the body. The aluminium chimes which are at the centre of the Soundshower are tuned to the earth year tone. This tone naturally slows down brainwave activity and heart rate and induces a deep meditative state. From silence to a full spectrum of tones, you are bathed by the healing frequencies which enhance a physical, mental and emotional calibration to the human body and energy field. You can directly experience the physical and healing nature of sound and music. The Soundshower releases tension and anxiety, bringing focus, clarity and insight.

them for dinner at 6.00pm they are welcome to come along. Long-time member of Glasshouse Country Community Church, Noelene Wood, said since Brendan took on the role of Pastor he has developed a strong ministry to young families within the church. “He was also active in the community, providing working bees, building projects, financial support and generally assisting people in need, both locally and overseas,” Noelene said. “He has been a blessing for the church and the wider community, and he will be dearly missed.” Beerwah High Chaplain, Mike Turner said Brendan and Melissa are a great example of a loving couple, who practice what they preach, by caring for people in the church and wider community. “Brendan is a very approachable, fun person to be around, and at the same time he is passionate about his beliefs and always aims to make his work as a pastor relevant and meaningful,” Mike said. “I have personally enjoyed working with him on community initiatives and with the Superdad’s band.” Knowing Brendan over this time, I can see what a legacy he will be leaving our community. He is a genuinely ‘nice fella’, and I can understand why his congregation and the rest of the community are supporting his choice to look to the future, and seize the opportunity presented to him. If you would like to contact Pastor Brendan his mobile number is 0417 757 397 and email is pastor.brendan@hotmail.com

Peachester NBN community action Super Strawberry As reported in previous editions, the National Broadband Network company (NBN) has plans to construct a 35m microwave radio tower in the heart of Peachester to transmit broadband internet signals, as part of the NBN fixed wireless network. The location of the tower has raised fears with locals in the area. Many have expressed concern with it near close proximity to houses, as well as the visual impact of a large tower and the land clearing that will be needed. As the microwave technology relies on an uninterrupted line of sight between the tower and the house, others are concerned that the internet signal strength and reliability will be compromised, because of the forested nature of the region. Despite this, NBN representatives have given public assurances that around 95% of Peachester residents will receive the wireless signals without difficulty. One local resident, Adam Deluca, is not confident with the information that the NBN public relations people are giving the community. To assist others, he has created a Facebook page – Peachester Community NBN Information Site – to give locals a platform to ask questions of each other and share information. Peachester locals and other interested parties have only until July 16 to lodge an objection against the permanent road closure with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines. To do this, you will need to write to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (PO Box 573, Nambour, 4560, QLD) – quoting reference
Round 1
2015/002251 – outlining your objections to the proposal to close part of the Range Road / Old Peachester Road reserve for the purposes of constructing a telecommunications tower. They can also be faxed to 5451 2260, emailed to SLAM-Nambour@dnrm.qld.gov.au or hand delivered to the Departmental office at Floor 1, Centenary Square, Currie Street, Nambour. As objections are subject to Right to Information (RTI) Act provisions, it is also recommended that you state that you want to be consulted if it becomes the subject of an access request under the RTI Act. If you would like assistance with this, you can contact Jim Straker (from the Maleny Towerless NBN group) on 5494 3229.
The 2015 Super Strawberry competition has started well, with an exciting finish – the winner arriving right on the 4.00pm Friday deadline. Braetop Berries, one of last year’s joint champions, produced the winning entry (pictured) which weighed in at 176 grams.
Good effort this early in the competition, but remember we are chasing that Guinness World Record of 250 grams. Surely this is achievable amongst all the Glasshouse Country growers! The annual Super Strawberry competition runs in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, community fund-raiser for Cancer Council Queensland. There are eight weekly rounds, and the 2015 champion will be announced on Sports Day, Saturday August 22. Round 2 closes 4.00pm, Friday 10th July, at Coochin Creek Co-op. Thanks to the Co-op staff and Beerwah Hotel for supporting this competition. (Enquiries to Helen Page, 5494 9557)

Rotary Change over dinner
Shoebox appeal update
By Lea Parkes The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains held their annual Change over Dinner at the Beerwah Hotel last Monday night. Along with the official introduction of the new Board they also made donations to a number of community groups and initiatives, including Morris House, Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, Peachester History Committee, Beerwah Chaplaincy, the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, and Team Jacob’s Hope (Bridge to Brisbane). Outgoing President Ian Hope said although the group faced a number of challenges because of reduced membership, they had achieved much throughout the year and supported many community events, including events at Australia Zoo, Beerwah Celebrates, The Chaplaincy Bowls Day and the Community Carols.
Incoming President Tony Long is looking forward to growing the group into the future and continuing the club’s involvement in many of our worthwhile community projects. The club meets on the first and third Monday of each month at the Beerwah Hotel at 6.15pm for 6.45pm. All interested people are welcome and can contact Trevor Taylor, Membership Director on 0478 813 630, email trevortaylor2003@ hotmail.com or call George MacKenzie on 5439 9371, email gfk46@bigpond.net.au

The shoebox appeal run by the Sunshine Girls to assist women on the land has been going really well with over 350 boxes collected so far. With the boxes destined for Winton to help rural women who are doing it tough – the aim is to send 500 boxes, filled with personal care and toiletry items the little luxuries that you can make do without, but will help brighten up their lives. There is still time to make up one of these care boxes with final collections planned for the end of August. This is a lovely practical appeal that will no doubt bring some small but much needed joy to these hardworking women. A big thank you to the following locations who have agreed to be drop off points in the community: Chardooze Hair Design at Beerburrum, Beerwah Newsagents, St Vincents at Landsborough, and Mark McArdle’s office at Caloundra. Alternatively you can drop in a filled box to us at the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News office, 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains.

Members are unanimous in their insistence that without Dawn’s effort the club would not be here today. In partnership with mother of 14 (all tennis players) Pat Collins, the two not only kept the club alive but set a trend of women-dominated tennis committees. Since 1979 Dawn has been a three-time president, three-time vice president, as well as threetime secretary. Only the onset of Parkinson’s disease could stop Dawn playing tennis but not her role as a major contributor, supervising activities and maintenance of the four Landsborough courts and surroundings. She was awarded life membership in 1991. Asked if all this amounted to some sort of vocation, Dawn replied "not necessarily. I just love tennis and everything about it."
Take a Break Playgroup 20
Well there it went, our second term for this year, how time flies! What a marvellous term it has been too, despite the fact that one or two of our helpers have had a couple of unforseen trips away for family. Playgroup has gone from strength to strength! Our wonderful helpers and our mums have all worked well together, and so much fun has been had by all. We have now two beautiful babes who have
come into this world and we have been lucky enough to receive them along with their older siblings! We are looking forward now to the next term which starts on July 15 for our Playgroup, so we Pray for God’s blessings and bring us all back in good health. The playgroup meets at Glasshouse Country & Peachester Community Uniting Church, Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah. See you then!

Contributed by John Cundill After a life-long love affair with tennis, 75-year-old Dawn Wendt has hung up her racquet, but not her active interest in the game. She is assistant treasurer of the newly elected Landsborough Tennis Club Committee, a role that will keep her in touch with tennis, since becoming a foundation member in 1970. Tennis for Dawn started as a 10-year-old coached by the son of the local primary school principal on a bumpy ant-bed court. Since then she has coached and inspired three generations of children - including six of her own - and worked tirelessly on committees, participating in all fundraising activities, supervising junior competitions, maintaining the grounds and tending to the courts, mostly on her own or with the assistance of her husband Frank.
Contributed by Trevor Some time ago the group adopted the practice that at meetings members would present a story, article or poem and the works would be read for evaluation and entertainment. The intention of this exercise was to assist in the widening of our perspective and creativity. The exercise would be no more than 500 words. This has been taken up by members with great enthusiasm and has provided some fine work. As of late, we have been witness to Maureen’s article on ‘Native Bears’which was very moving and well researched. Sue’s contribution on the difficulty of obtaining a secondary education while living in the bush was enlightening. Trevor provided a little nonsense in the form of family history. Neville made apologies for not doing his homework with a note from his mum. He did,

however, read ‘Words Spoken’, a moving piece about the impact of words spoken and unspoken. Martin discussed the verbal presentation of pieces read by members. It was agreed we need to know more about how to project for the best results. All agreed that the use of the lectern used by the reader provided focus and control. However, the comfort of the reader makes the reading meaningful, so members have a choice of standing or sitting, providing the reading is heard clearly. The group meet on the second and fourth Friday of the month in the Library meeting room at Beerwah for a 10.00am start, our next meeting will be Friday, July 10. We invite all members of the public to join us. We promise you an interesting morning.

Introducing Mark Wilson … your Dairy Freezer Department Manager Mark Wilson is the very new Dairy Freezer Department Manager at IGA Beerwah – and he’s only been in the role for one week. But don’t worry – his previous working background includes being a family dairy farmer, and also working at Bega Cheese; so he has firsthand experience about the diary industry! He has been with the IGA group for four years; working at Beerwah since the new opening (eight months ago), but has also worked at the Cooroy, Glass House and Woodford stores. He grew up in Beerwah, worked away in NSW for some time (13 years) then returned to live here in his childhood area. Mark also understands how important it is to support the local suppliers – offering customers the Maleny Dairies range, Queensland Yoghurt, Suncoast Eggs and
Mountain View Eggs to name a few. Currently studying for his Cert III in Retail, Mark is enjoying learning alongside eight other staff members – it offers a great support network. He believes that is the difference in how working at IGA and being part of a strong team, sets them apart from other supermarkets. Mark enjoys being given flexibility in his role, creating his own specials, ordering and also training new team members to get them up to speed. With his team he is proud of keeping his section looking at its best and fully stocked for the customers, and also enjoys assisting other departments when time allows. When asked what Mark sees in the future, he says “I am excited and looking forward to expanding my new role – please pop in and let me know your favourite chilled item!”
IGA BEERWAH is 100% DEDICATED TO YOU AND YOUR COMMUNITY. Without the constant backing from our local shops (especially in the beginning) we wouldn’t have made it, so it’s really good to see a local business like IGA Beerwah doing so well. I have noticed a huge difference and improvement with the upgraded new store. Congratulations and thank you for your ongoing support! Ross Hopper, Maleny Dairies

VIEW celebrates birthday
Contributed by Judith Mason We recently celebrated our 12th birthday in country style, with members dressed in jeans, checked shirts and cow boy hats. We were entertained by line dancers and local guitar player Paul Fagan. There were 70 ladies, nine of which were the ever supportive Red Hat Ladies, and during the day, 32 raffles were won, plus a box of groceries and a handmade teddy bear. Cutting the birthday Pauline and her helpers set the theme with the cake - Val Burrell (98 tables decorated with corn dollies, jars of popcorn, not out!) and Lorraine red checked table runners and red serviettes. Sumpton - Zone Pauline also made our beautiful birthday cake, Councillor which our oldest member Val Burrell and Zone Councillor, Lorraine Sumpton cutting it. On the first Wednesday of the month the outing was to Club Glasshouse for a Trivia morning. On July 1 the outing was to Happy Valley, Caloundra foreshore for morning tea, and a walk along the beach before a barbecue. Queenslanders will be able to purchase hundreds of everyday grocery items at reduced prices as IGA stores across the state launch Price Match. The Price Match Promise initiative will see independent retailers, under the IGA banner, match hundreds of everyday items such as breakfast cereals, coffee and pasta to Australia’s major supermarket chains. With IGA and IGA SUPA stores participating in Queensland, this represents significant savings for locals. Store Owner of White's IGA Mooloolah, Roz White, said Price Match enables customers to shop locally without having to pay more –‘we check, we match, you win.’ “Every week, we compare and match 100s of everyday products, so you won’t pay more to shop at your local SUPA IGA or IGA. The prices are matched weekly to the big supermarkets everyday shelf price (exludes promotional and specials pricing),” she said. “Price Match will come as welcome news to locals who want to support their independent grocers but have previously found it more expensive to do so. Not only does this initiative provide savings to shoppers’ hip pockets but when you shop independent you also support your local community. “The money customers spend at their local IGA filters down into the community through IGA Community Chest, a program that raises funds to support local community organisations or charities,” Roz said. Two cents from every sale of an IGA Signature product is donated to IGA Community Chest. To date, over $75 million has been raised. “It really is a win-win situation because by shopping local at an IGA store, customers are also helping us in our commitment to keep supporting and building independent Australian brands and suppliers,” Roz said. IGA Price Match recently launched nationally (except NT and ACT) with over 800 stores participating at the start of the campaign. Participating retailers in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny area include, IGA Beerwah, Grant Prince, IGA Glass House Mountains, Mel and Gill Luke, IGA Landsborough, Ashley and Casandra Grigor, IGA Mooloolah, Michael and Roz White and SUPA IGA Maleny, Rob and Samantha Outridge. www.gcnews.com.au
Environment Walk on the wild side
A little over a year ago, members of the Barung Landcare Association began the children’s program, Walks on the Wild Side. These are regular, gentle adventures in nature, aimed at young children’s level of interest and awareness. One of the walks that took place earlier this year was to an alpaca farm where the alpacas are all named and are such characters with their own personalities. The children received a great introduction to these amazing animals from owners, Den and Sharon (Barung members) and took them for a walk down the road, across the paddock and down to the creek where the alpacas and the children had an enjoyable swim and morning tea (the humans, that is!) The second walk was an exploration of the rock pools at Shelly Beach, Caloundra with marine biologist, Christine Clegg, who generously led the children on a journey of discovering who lives in the pools. The children viewed the critters through a bucket with a perspex base to make viewing easier. Many unusual animals were sighted and studied amidst much excitement. More recently there were walks to the rock pool

at the lovely, Kondalilla Falls in Flaxton and a walk around Mount Tibrogargan, Glass House Mountains. The next Walk on the Wild Side will be on Saturday, July 18 to the old Mooloolah Railway Tunnel. The group will explore the old disused tunnel (about 200 metres long) to see if they can find any creatures in the dark. If you’d like to come, meet at the Mooloolah IGA at 8.45am to drive to the entrance from there. Bring a torch! Call Raine on 0412 031 880 for more details.

I am always interested in gaining a better understanding of our rural industries. I have enjoyed two encounters recently that have not only given me a greater insight into the challenges these industries face, but also highlighted their admirable resilience and ingenuity. Last month, I was inspired by the Queensland Strawberry Growers Association workshop where farmers brainstormed a zero waste project aimed at minimising waste of strawberries grown on the Sunshine Coast. I also visited Nature’s Fruit Company, a local fruit packing and marketing enterprise specialisingin the packaging and marketing of avocados yearround. Working in partnership with growers, they have been operating in the Glass House Mountains for almost 30 years.
Peace Memorial Park upgrade
Work is now underway at the Peace Memorial Park sporting precinct (commonly known as the Landsborough Tennis Centre) to upgrade driveway access to the centre and connection to the amenities block as well as improved signage. Designed to withstand heavy vehicle access and flooding events, I look forward to seeing the final result in the coming weeks.
Lions Club changing of the guard
It was my pleasure to attend the Lions Club of Beerwah changeover dinner where Past District Governor Roley McAtee installed the Club office bearers for 2015-16. Active in the community since 1967, this service group continues to promote a range of local initiatives including the ‘Turning the Screws’ on crime project in conjunction with Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch and the Queensland Police Service, the Glass House Country Business Directory project and, together with Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch, the ‘Newcomers to Glass House Country’ welcome kit project. The Club meets monthly and President Patricia Jutila or Secretary Charles Farran would be more than happy to discuss the benefits of membership with interested community members. Visit beerwah.qld.lions.org.au to learn more about this valuable community service group.

Council’s $588 million 2015-16 budget has been announced and I’m pleased to advise funding across a range of priority areas for Division 5 aimed at shaping a positive future for our environment, community and economy. From the $75,000 revitalisation of the Whipbird Garden at our stunning Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, Tanawha to investing $7,000 into upgrading disability parking at Neill Road, Mooloolah Valley and $235,000 to replace the footbridge at Maleny Showgrounds, local residents will appreciate the variety of projects on the cards for the year ahead. Arguably the most important development of all will benefit the four legged amongst us, with $2.3 million allocated in 2015-16 to construct stage one of the new animal pound at Sippy Creek. For further information about what the budget means for you and your area, visit Council’s website.
Delivering for Mooloolah
We enjoyed another highly productive Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting last week, providing community members an opportunity to learn about upcoming local projects, make proposals and raise any concerns. Here are some of the projects discussed at the meeting which Council is partnering with the community to deliver: • Electronic sign in Martin Rungert Park - Not your standard run of the mill type sign, this proposed sign will include the ‘Welcome to Mooloolah’ direction, Moo for Mooloolah message and an electronic message board. • Mooloolah Community Rec Park - Upgrade of the road entrance to the park, new cross over pipe including memorial signage and gate. • Signage for the new shelter messaging the history of the Cream Shed Mooloolah Water Watch will draft the message and look for the sign. • Skate facility for the youth – Petition tabled to Council in June. Design and three possible locations are under consideration and the preferred site to be brought to the community next month. The meeting is on the first Thursday of each month at 7.00am for a 7.30am start. What should you do during tick season? 1. Prevention is better than a cure – make sure you are treating your pet with a preventative treatment. Repelling ticks before they bite is key to prevention. 2. Check your pet every day for ticks – the best way is to feel, not look, for ticks. Start in the common places such as the head and neck, but make sure you search everywhere, including the ears, around the eyes, under the collar, between toes etc. Your pet is also bound to enjoy the extra attention! 3. Be on the lookout for the telltale signs • Weakness in the hind legs or staggering, which may be followed by paralysis • Vomiting or regurgitation • Change in the dog’s bark or cat’s meow due to paralysis of the throat and voice box • Laboured breathing, which may include a ‘grunting’ sound 4. If you are travelling with your pet – check with your vet if you will be travelling to an area where there are paralysis ticks. 5. If you notice any of the signs, it is critical to take your pet to your vet immediately. Take the time to protect the one you love!

Opal is a female Pointer
x Bull Arab who is only 17-months-old, she is lovely and light on leash, and ok around most other dogs. An ideal situation for Opal would be a person who has had plenty of dog experience, and will give this girl the confidence that she needs. Opal would make an ideal dog for someone who lives alone, as she will let you know if visitors are arriving. This sweet girl has lived with us here in the refuge now for over four months, and she needs to find her place in life. Adoption fee is only $200.00 and she is de-sexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated and ready to meet her new owner.
Brian is a male Domestic Shorthair Cat who is oneyear-old, and he is a darling who does not mind being picked up and held. This boy is really best as the only cat in the family, and he does not like dogs either, so a home where he is the only pet would be best for him. Brian has all of his vet work done and he is looking forward to his new home soon. Adoption fee is only $110.00. Open: Tue - Sat 9am - 4pm Sundays 10am - 2pm

Andrew Prescott
President: Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce
It has been a busy month for the Chamber and the Executive Committee. We are making progress with projects that have been discussed and plans that have been put in place by the great work done by our members and committee, past and present. We are working closely with Celebrate Beerwah and are on the brink of launching the Tourism Committee. We are organising a bus tour of the local attractions for members that are interested to get a good idea of what we have to promote for tourism. Discussions are constantly being held with Council in relation to a number of matters including making our area more RV friendly in an effort to attract tourists to the region. Currently we are developing relationships with other Chambers and bodies in the region and investigating the suitability of a Business Mentoring program for our members. Initial discussions indicate that this could be of great benefit to those members that wish to use the resource. In an effort to get our information out quicker and in an more accessible format, the Chamber will be utilising its Facebook page as its daily form of media, to address members, so please go online and join our page. This will be a great source of information and will include articles and upcoming events. There will also be information provided to us from different resources including Sunshine Coast Destinations and Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland. Our last Network Meeting was well attended and it was great to see new faces, and some of our newer members attending, along with some long term members. Two guest speakers presented to the group and provided information on very different but equally interesting projects they are undertaking. It would be terrific to see more members attend these evenings as they are very worthwhile on both a business and a social level. And speaking of social, it has come to our attention that quite a few of our members ride motorcycles and this is something we would like to pursue on a more social level with the goal of arranging rides on a regular basis if members are interested. The next meeting was to be held as a networking meeting at Beerwah Hideaway but unfortunately they will not be able to host us now on the date we had chosen. So stay posted with the Chamber Facebook page for an update on when and where the next meeting will be held. So as you can see your Chamber of Commerce has a lot to offer. Why not take advantage of it and come along to the next meeting?

V8 Supercuts celebrate one year in business Owner of V8 Supercuts, Julie Bischoff, is thrilled to be celebrating the first anniversary of her Beerwah barbershop. Julie brings over 25 years of industry experience to her business and is both a qualified barber and hairdresser who loves what she does! The idea behind the business name came through Jules’ other passion -V8 supercars; so the name was chosen to show a new, fresh approach to the business that reflected her two main passions – supercars and supercuts! The business specialises in old fashioned barbering with a modern style that suits guys both young and old, as well as ladies and children’s hairstyling and cuts. Jules caters to modern styles as well as the more traditional short back and sides/tapering and cut throat razor

Hawkes and Suzanne Hoey who together commissioned what was previously known as the Embracia facility at Beerwah. Christine started as the Clinical Care Co-ordinator with Embracia nine years ago before moving to becoming Facility Manager at Beerwah in 2012. She continues this role at Embracia in Woodford. Suzanne is coming up to her tenth year of service with the company and is now Operations Manager at the new aged care residence. When Embracia at Beerwah was sold to a larger organisation in April, both Christine and Suzanne happily chose to remain working for the family run company as they genuinely loved the philosophy and family ethos of the business. The new home has been purpose built on land purchased from the neighbouring Woodford Retirement Village. A sense of community is being built upon with strong links being established with the members from the retirement village – some of whom have chosen to move to Embracia and others actively volunteering at the home. The new facility embraces the local Woodford community providing employment opportunities for staff and local healthcare professionals, local suppliers and businesses. The home promotes the Eden alternative philosophy of people focused care which offers individual choice in daily activities as well as a memory support household which offers safe, secure and familiar care. One of the recent recipients of the Centenary of ANZAC funding grants was Dr Murray Johnson who was awarded a grant totalling $13,000 to complete a book entitled ‘The Beerburrum Experiment – A History of Australia’s First World War Soldier Settlement’. The former Glass House Mountains resident has lectured in history at the University of Queensland and the Australian National University and hopes that the book will reveal that, “Beerburrum is full of history that deserves to be recognised outside of the area.” Dr Johnson’s initial interest in the area began as a mature aged student studying at the University of Queensland when he was invited to take part in a small historical project that incorporated a study of Beerburrum. He went on to study his PHD in post World War One settlements where Beerburrum – Australia’s first solider settlement featured heavily. From 1916 - 1929 between 500-600 soldiers settled in the area which originally took in a huge parcel of land from Glass House Mountains to Elimbah and out to Bribie Passage totalling around 51,000 acres. Despite the best of intentions, for many of these men, the reality was very different from the envisaged farm ideal. Each soldier received an allocated settlement and 625 pounds.
Living - History Library talk text
A number of factors made the settlement unviable; however the story deserves to be told. Dr Johnson applied for the grant early last year and in March of this year he received confirmation from Mal Broughs office that his application had been successful. The book of approximately 60,000 words has now been completed and the manuscript has gone to the publisher. Dr Johnson believes that Beerburrum is of great importance to the region – for example, Anzac Avenue is the only war memorial in Australia planted by returned servicemen on a soldier settlement, with 13 of the original trees still remaining. The booked is marked for publication later next year to coincide with the centenary of the original settlement which commenced in November 1916. Dr Johnson is keen to hear stories of those who have a family connection to the settlement and can be contacted via email on murrayjohnson01@dodo.com.au or via his website http://qldhistorical.com.au
Friends of Bankfoot House Launch of ‘Jack Ferris’ Book Mrs Clem Kelly travelled down to Bankfoot House from Noosaville last Sunday to officially launch the book on the life of her father, Jack Ferris. John Charles (Jack) Ferris, who was born in 1901, spent his early years as a bullocky in the Peachester district working with his father. In 1925 he married Mary Burgess from Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains. Their eldest daughter was Clementina, who eventually married Dr Andrew Kelly. Jack and Mary purchased Bankfoot House in 1964 from Mary’s brother and both were staunch custodians of the area’s rich history. Mary passed away at Bankfoot House in 1987 and Jack became the last resident of Bankfoot House, dying in 2002 at the age of 101. Clem, supported by her family, was thrilled to be able to launch the book which had been compiled by the Friends of Bankfoot House.
The launch date was timed to closely coincide with what would have been Jack’s 114th birthday. Copies of the book are available from the Friends of Bankfoot House Inc. at a cost of $10.00 plus postage.
Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder, President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council. www.gcnews.com.au

5 steps to buff up your finances
Katrina, Amy and Bob from Range Accounting
It’s time to get fiscal, and pump up your financial wellbeing. The new financial year is a great opportunity to boost financial fitness – and it doesn’t involve working up a sweat. The money experts at industry super fund−owned bank, ME recommend the following 5-point fitness regime to get your money matters looking trim, taut and terrific for the 12 months ahead. Check your financial pulse Let’s start with a quick check of your vital signs. Is your credit card debt under control; are you growing regular savings; do you have a pool of emergency funds to fall back on? What about your home loan – are you sure it’s competitively priced, and are you making additional payments to get ahead with the loan? Are you juicing your finances too much? Overspending is seriously bad for your financial health, and an early warning sign can be a bloated credit card balance. To get cash under control, you need to know exactly what your spending habits look like. The government’s free TrackMySpend app is useful for recording daily spending or simply maintain a handwritten spending diary for a month. When you know where your money is going, draw up a budget. ME’s online budget planner lets you compare total outgoings to household income. Visit www.mebank.com.au and click on ‘Calculators’. Your budget will also highlight areas where you can cut back spending to free up cash for saving or investing.
Contributed by the team at Range Accounting With a new financial year upon us, there are many things you need to consider, including: Business Portal The ATO is changing the way we meet our lodgement obligations and communicate with them. They are encouraging businesses to set up a business portal which allows businesses to electronically lodge BAS Statements and many other forms. It will also enable businesses to view balances and statements of accounts. SuperStream This is intended to simplify the lodgement and payment of staff superannuation. All staff super will be reported on the one form and paid to the one place despite having staff with different super funds. If your default fund does not offer this service you may be eligible for the free small business superannuation clearing house. Visit www.ato.gov.au for more information or to register. For further information and tips please follow us on Facebook or give us a call to arrange an appointment.

Detox your finances - whittle away debt Your overall debt is important but some types of debt are worse for your financial health than others. In particular, relying on high interest debt to pay for items of no lasting value is the fiscal equivalent of carrying unwanted kilos. Detox your finances by aiming to clear high interest debt – like credit card or store card balances, with extra repayments. Or consider switching to a low rate card. Savings on interest charges make it easier to clear the debt sooner. Tone your savings Personal savings is one muscle group none of us can afford to overlook. Savings are the foundation of wealth and can provide a financial lifeline when unexpected expenses crop up. Your budget will show how much you can set aside in regular savings. Now make it happen by organising an automatic funds transfer from your everyday bank account to a high interest savings account. Time the transfer to coincide with pay days to be sure you give savings (rather than spending) top priority. Aim for a personal best Debt under control? Check. Action taken to grow savings? Check. All that remains is to set some financial goals to work towards. Make your goals realistic and achievable, and share them with your other half so you encourage one another to stay on track. No matter whether you’re aiming to buy a first home, give your kids a quality education or build funds for retirement, the goals you set today could set you up for your best financial year ever.

New business beginnings for W.D. Hall Jens Staermose from W.D. Hall Accountants in Mooloolah is pleased to announce a new business venture that they have taken on in Mooloolah. As of July 1, clients of Debbie Gillingham from ‘Accounting for You’ in Mooloolah have been offered the option of transferring their business to W.D. Hall Accountants. Debbie and her family are moving overseas to the United States and so she is finalising her accounting business in preparation for the move. In order to offer clients a continuity of care in the local area, Debbie has recommended the transfer of her clients to W.D. Hall Accountants. In other news with the accounting firm; Jens’ wife Madeleine – who has previously worked for the company for a number of years in the Northern Territory, has come on board as office and administration manager. With Madeleine back as part of the team, W.D. Hall can now also proudly promote themselves as a family owned and operated business.
W.D. Hall has had offices in Mooloolah for the last two years to compliment their office in Glass House Mountains. Principal Accountant, Jens Staermose has over 35 years of experience and brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to his practice. He is both a certified practicing accountant (CPA) and chartered tax advisor (CTA), the peak designation available to tax professionals in Australia. One of the key strengths of the business is the comprehensive knowledge of accounting practices that Jens has. This is summed up cleverly with the eye catching image of a smiling baby that features prominently on the outside of the Mooloolah office with the quote … 'when it comes to your taxes and financial advice, seek experience and wisdom over youthful exuberance'. Although Jens is very experienced, another one of his strengths is his ability to look beyond the numbers and always take the bigger picture into account. He doesn’t rely on assumptions and always takes the time to consider and actively seek out the best possible financial outcome for his clients. Jens has a natural affinity for numbers which dates back to his childhood and he has an extensive professional history in the financial industry both here and overseas. He studied his M.B.A. at Aarhus University in Denmark followed by international work as an economist and financial manager in Denmark, Egypt, Singapore and Vanuatu, where he met Madeleine. Jens came to Australia in 1983 and went on to study a Graduate Diploma of Financial
Management from the University of New England. Since 2010, Jens and his family have settled in Glass House where he maintains an office. W.D. Hall offers clients both the latest cloud based accounting technology (XERO) as well as more traditional accounting software. While happy to seek ways to minimise clients tax and provide financial advice; Jens and his team also offer a number of financial services from auditing and taxation, to property and investment advice, establishment of Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF), and asset protection. Other areas of expertise involve business or company advice and compliance, budgeting and bookkeeping, wealth and security creation. W.D. Hall Accountants are open from Monday to Friday from 9.00am until 5.00pm with other times available by appointment. For more information please contact them on 5494 7727, or call into their office at 12 Jones Street Mooloolah.

Tax update for local businesses
Rosemarie ~ Accountant
Josh ~Accountant
ND D RS
Sonja ~ Receptionist
One of the big taxation pluses for small business has been the immediate deduction for assets costing less than $20,000. This means that for those registered for GST, the cost of the item must be not more than $21,999.99. For those not registered for GST, the cost must not be more than $19,999.99. Of course, there is always a grey area. The asset must be for your business. It can be new or second hand and you do need to be in the Simplified Depreciation Regime to access this deduction. Dates are also relevant. This came into effect at 7.30pm on May 12, 2015. So, if the payment came out of your bank account before May 13, 2015 you do not get the deduction. How do you know if you are in the Simplified System? When this system first started it was simple, the election to enter the Simplified System was a selection on the Tax Return. Actually, it was supposed to be simple, however, this was all very new to accountants. So many accountants didn’t trust the new way and stuck to what they knew, the old way. Today, there is no election box to tick on the tax return, it all comes down to how your Financial Reports are produced by your accountant. But – and there’s always a but – there is a lock out law for the simplified depreciation rules. If a small business chooses to opt out of this system, it will not be allowed back in for five years. These lock out laws have now been suspended until June 30, 2017. Another big plus is for primary producers, with immediate deductions for capital expenditure on fencing and water facilities. Silos and tanks used for
Business feature storage of fodder will have a three year write off allowance. Now for the biggest PLUS of all, this is how we know that our Government understands the hard work put in by the small business … the company tax cuts! Starting from July 1, 2015 the tax rate for companies with an aggregated turnover of less than $2 million will be 28.5%. You are not smiling – why not? There has always been an incentive for a company to have a profit, it allows for all non-cash deductions to be taken full advantage of. Let’s face it, why be in business if you are not making more than a normal wage. There used to be a very pessimistic view regarding companies paying tax. The general business owner would cringe at the very idea. But company tax is not lost, it’s only held as a credit by the ATO waiting for the dividends to be paid and then that company tax becomes a franking credit. Now, the small business company is being gifted 1.5% of its profit back from the Government, because, the franking credit is still going to retain its value of 30%. So, the bigger the profit, the bigger the gift from the Government. All other small business entities will receive a discount on their tax, but this is capped at $1,000 per individual each year. All business owners need to plan, and the best way to plan is to get the best out of your accountant. At Fiducian Accountants & Business Advisers we have the experts. Our favourite saying is “You make the profits, we’ll help you spend it” … the right way.

School News Olay! Mooloolah State Brilliant bridges 5 students at Glasshouse Christian College School dances up a storm! Year totally impressed teachers and the principal when Mooloolah State School has been involved in Spanish Dancing for more than 20 years, offering this to students from Year 4 and onwards as an extracurricular activity within the school. The Spanish dancers have represented the school over the years at many multi-cultural festivals and community events across the Sunshine coast, as well as performing for the students of the school.
they brought in their homework this week. Students had been learning about the principles behind good bridge building, looking at the science and engineering behind the constructions, as well as different types of bridges which are found throughout the world. Homework was to create a bridge and describe its structure. The variety and detail of the bridges created was a credit to the imagination and skill of the students. Principal Mike Curtis was impressed. “The students have put a lot of thought and work into their homework with stunning results,” he said. Lily Rogers’ bridge had working lights which looked spectacular when the classroom lights were turned off Mr Curtis used the opportunity to talk to the students about the famous bridge failure in 1940. Nicknamed ‘Galloping Gertie’ the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was completely destroyed by a strong wind. The video footage was called up on the interactive whiteboard and the students were amazed by what they saw. Mr Curtis explained how the wind resonance exactly matched the frequency of the bridge’s natural structure which increasingly rocked the bridge until it was completely destroyed. A newfound respect for bridge structure and engineers was born that afternoon.
But the girls love performing their intricate dance routines for more than just their fellow students. The parents of the school, members of the community and the general public have enjoyed watching them perform year after year! They practice their moves and routines twice a week to perform at their best. Sound good? Well come check them out at the Mooloolah State School Art Fair on October 23. See you there!

By Sonia Clark Glass House Early Education Centre and Preschool are excited about continuing to offer quality childcare in the Glass House area. Recently they had the Office of Early Childhood come out and do an extensive rating and assessment process that found that the Centre met all of the national quality standards. In all seven levels of assessment, which forms part of the national quality framework, the centre sufficiently met all key levels. This is a credit to the centre and staff, especially given that director Sam Lane has only been at the Centre for less than six months. “I am really happy as we have only been working together for a few months and this is such a collaborative process between the families, management, community and staff,” she said. “To do so well and meet these high levels of quality assessment was a real achievement.” Under Sam’s guidance, and drawing on her 18 years of early childcare experience, the Centre runs a number of initiatives that expands on these quality standards. These include education planning, physical environment, sustainability and collaborative partnerships. One early learning program, that is possibly a first for the local area, is an age appropriate first aid
course for the kindy children. Using a qualified first aid trainer, the children bring in their teddies and are taught what to do in an emergency, how to call emergency services, basic bandaging and CPR on their toys – all in a bid to promote practical life skills. Sustainability also features strongly at the Centre with recycling projects, a worm farm and vertical gardens. Families are asked to bring in eight items to donate, such as old handbags, pots, gumboots and boxes. These are then upcycled into something useful which encourages them to use their imaginations and get creative, and teaches the kids to sustain the environment for the future. The Centre takes children from birth to school age and is open Monday to Friday 6.30am-6.30pm. The highly qualified staff include an accredited Kindy teacher and vacation care is also offered. All meals are provided and are preservative, egg and nut free. 2 Page street Glass House Mountains, 5438 7311, www.qccs.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

Cafe de Fudge
Recently on one of those drizzly almost wintery days, a friend Judi and I headed out for lunch. There was definitely a bit of chill in the air so I was looking for something hearty, and when my pizza arrived, I knew I had made the right choice! Well actually I was just a little bit disappointed as the size of the pizza was so generous it did mean that I wouldn’t be able to try one of the intriguing cakes in the cabinet.
I had already eyed up the Persian Love Cake and the Lime Polenta Cake and was keen for us to try them out. Judi isn’t vegetarian but she does like a tasty vegetarian option, and enjoyed her spinach and feta filo, which was served with a crunchy fresh salad and a separate bowl of dressing. Just the perfect size for lunch. Fortunately I was able to take the cake back to the office for afternoon tea.
As the cakes (as well as nearly everything else is make in-house) they definitely are able to offer something just a little bit different. And speaking of being a little different and unique, the slither of lavender caramel fudge I squeezed in on the way out the door, was definitely not like anything I’d had before – and knowing that lavender has calming qualities, I figure that has got to be a really good combination with all that sugar!

Things To Do Outspoken author event with John Birmingham
Help a drought ravaged community
Outspoken presents an evening of conversation with acclaimed author John Birmingham and freelance journalist and author Andrew McMillen on Wednesday, July 22 at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start at the Maleny Community Centre. John Birmingham is the author of the cult classic ‘He Died with a Falafel in His Hand’; the award-winning history ‘Leviathan’, the ‘Axis of Time’ series and the ‘Disappearance’ trilogy. Among other topics, John will be discussing the radical step of publishing a trilogy of books all at once – with the release earlier this year of three Dave Hooperbooks titled ‘Emergence’, ‘Resistance’ and ‘Ascendance’. A national treasure, contributor to a wide range of newspapers and magazines, and an outspoken commentator on everything in our culture, this will be an evening of conversation not to be missed. Andrew Mcmillen has published his first book, ‘Talking Smack’, which features interviews with some of Australia’s best musicians about their experiences with and thoughts on prescription and legal drugs. Through these intimate conversations McMillen approaches a subject that’s rarely discussed honestly as he explores the truths and realities of a contentious topic. Both authors will be in conversation with Steven Lang and tickets are $18.00 ($12.00 students) available from the Maleny bookshop 5494 3666.
Beerwah Hotel is throwing its support behind an organisation called Drought Angels, to assist communities in severely drought affected areas, with a fundraising event to be held on Saturday, July 11. The event will be held in conjunction with the Beerwah’s Got Country night at the hotel. It will feature raffles, prizes and donation buckets to assist in the fundraising effort to support Isisford, a small community of around 300 – located about 117kilometres south of Longreach. This fundraising event is part of a larger South East Queensland initiative organised by the Queensland Hotels Association - of which Beerwah Hotel is a member. The community of Isisford has been identified as one that would benefit greatly from assistance and the hope is that funds raised from the Beerwah Hotel event, as well as from others around the state over the next month, will go towards family food hampers and prepaid visa cards to assist the entire town. Beerwah Hotel is hoping to raise at least $2,000.99 towards the effort, with raffles and prize draws kicking off at around 5.30pm, followed by Tasha Amoroso headlining the night supported by ‘The Will Day Band’. If you would like more details or would like to donate to this worthy cause, or donate raffle prizes, then please contact Cassie Ross at the Beerwah Hotel on 5494 0555 or 0448 436 434 alternatively you can email cassie@ beerwahhotel.com.au

Backyard Stickybeak
Lakeside Garden, Heathberry – Curramore Road, Witta As part of this year’s Gardening on the Edge event held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend (organised by the Maleny Garden Club), six properties around Maleny opened their gates for people to explore their gardens. I had the ‘terrible’ task of having a poke around three of them and over the coming months, I’ll go over some of the great features and ideas from each of them.
First cab off the rank is the property called ‘Heathberry’ on Curramore Road, Witta and with its garden called ‘Lakeside Garden’. The one acre plus is set alongside a spectacularly large spring-fed lake, making for a beautiful backdrop which would be the envy of any keen gardener. Most of the garden has been rescued from the ruins of a rundown nursery.

Owner, artist Heather Jones described it as being “gravel, mud and weeds … broken down greenhouses, fencing wire, old pots, a lot of junk and dilapidated sheds.” Many of the garden beds were created from scratch, using recycled bricks, stones and pavers – which is a great way to save money and give an instant ‘aged’ feel. As sculptor Lindsay Muir also has a studio on the property, there are many quirky artwork garden sculptures. But many are made using common materials – much of which have been recycled – and in a manner that isn’t too complicated to replicate. An easy example is the use of large crab-pot floats which are painted different colours, attached to metal rods and irrigation pipes, and then used as an eye-catching garden sculpture. Heather’s use of flowering orchids (of the appropriate varieties) attached to trees is a simple way to add colour and interest to an otherwise unexciting tree or to make you stop and look, then you notice the other lower groundcover species (which you’d probably just walk by otherwise). Most plants used are easy-care and Heather has chosen a range of species so that there is some colour at all times showing against the lush green foliage background – a simple technique to give you year round colour in the garden. Good examples for winter colour are Aloes and Red Hot Pokers. But it’s the utilisation of the lake that definitely creates the ‘wow’ factor. Small islands accessed across narrow bridges create peaceful spaces surrounded by water. Seats and benches are placed to take advantage of the water views – but they are cleverly angled to make sure you can find somewhere to sit at different times of the day, and when the sun is at different places and angles. There’s something about water in a garden which is calming and restful. You don’t need to have a lake to create the feel – a pond or even a fountain will do the trick just as nicely … although having a lake at your doorstep is pretty special.

Real Estate Homeowners - buyer beware
Lawyers are warning new homebuyers in Queensland to check their insurance or they could end up being forced to buy a pile of rubble if the property is destroyed by cyclone or ravaged by fire. Slater and Gordon Queensland Conveyancing Lawyer Robert Kern said new home owners should make sure they have properly insured the property from the moment they signed the contract. “The standard Queensland contract provides that the property is at the buyer’s risk from 5.00pm on the first business day after the contract date,” Mr Kern said. “This means that from that date, if the property is damaged in a natural disaster or burns down, that’s the buyer’s problem. Therefore you still have to buy the home, even though there’s nothing there left to buy. “And if the bank refuses to lend the money you’re potentially stuck in a contract you can’t complete.” Mr Kern said the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (Cth) provides that if a seller has insurance on the property and something happens, it is deemed that insurance will also cover the buyer. “However the advice to the buyer is to never rely on that. Their insurance may have lapsed, not cover certain types of damage (such as flood) or be inappropriate for other reasons. Mr Kern said the vendor was required to take ‘reasonable’ care of the property from contract date to settlement. “That means that reasonable wear and tear is acceptable. “And if it is minor damage, say for example, a broken window, the buyer has a right to seek compensation for its repair. “The issues arise when there is major structural damage to the property and why buyers should always take out insurance before settlement, even if the contract is still subject of finance or building and pest inspections,” he said. Mr Kern said the contract also does not require the seller to clean the property or have it spotless at settlement. “This often disappoints buyers, who were expecting to move into a freshly cleaned home.”

Do you have an investment property that you need to consider when submitting your tax this year?
first step when considering how much equity you have.
If so, I’d be happy to do a short 15 minute appraisal for you to pass onto your accountant. Or maybe, you are thinking of refinancing to buy your first investment property with the rates as low as they are and need to see where you sit financially.
Should you then decide it’s a great time to sell I’d be more than happy to do a more in depth appraisal with you or keep in contact with you quarterly to update your appraisal. Either way, I’m a real estate professional who is here to help and loves getting to know new owners and homes in the area. So don’t be shy, give me a call.
A market appraisal is the best way to determine current market guides on prices and is often the

Property of the week Amaroo - a beautiful place
Follow the gravel driveway through your own private rain forest, past the two dams with Bass, Yellow Belly and Perch up to the home and cleared paddock. The home offers an old world charm with polished mixed timber floors throughout, beginning with the timber front door with feature stained glass windows leading to the air conditioned main living area featuring original ceiling roses, patterned architraves and dado rail with lower wall panelling. The large kitchen has New Guinea rosewood doors, tiled bench top with loads of work space, a breakfast bar opening onto the living area and plenty of
storage with ample cupboards and a large pantry. The servery from the kitchen to the breezeway makes entertaining a dream! There are five good sized bedrooms all with built-ins and the main has a walk in robe and ensuite with heaps of storage and large vanity, and is fully glassed in over bath shower and toilet. The main bedroom also has air conditioning and a ceiling fan. The lounge/media room has a large hammer pressed copper fireplace and a large New Guinea rosewood wall unit. This room also provides surround sound and air conditioning. On the other side of the breezeway is the large laundry with great storage, another bathroom with shower and vanity, auxiliary room and double garage with a non-slip floor.
What more can you ask for perfect location and close to town amenities. As potential owners, don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to meet the market prior to or on auction day!!

Glasshouse Country Baptist Church
Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship I am sure it is not just me who over recent weeks is becoming overwhelmed at the deaths and tragedies that are leaving so many people saddened and bereft of hope. The precious gift of life is taken away in acts that cannot be explained and never justified. Crimes committed overseas and here, as well as tragic accidents that shock everyone, all leave a trail of sadness that seem only to be interrupted by the next horrific event. That scale of human suffering affects very many people and how we cope is not an issue to be taken lightly or dismissed. We should not ignore it, we cannot distract ourselves from it by isolating ourselves from another's suffering, nor can we use religion to try and buffer people from what is truly difficult to bear. The Christian can turn, however, to one who has
Walking group in July
known suffering. Jesus Christ has said he has come so that we may have life and have it to the full. How can that promise lead us through these times that are so death ridden? Well Christ himself has faced that dark reality and in dying and rising assures us that death, while sadly and painfully experienced, is not the last word. Instead, life will have the last word. It is painfully obvious that the death and resurrection of Jesus does not remove or protect us from the harsh reality of death but life in Him means we acknowledge our mortality and sadness and at the same time know that there is a deeper truth. That truth is faith which gives us hope. This hope makes us freer people as we face all of life's challenges. Most importantly we need not fear nor feel alone as we face the power of evil in its many deadly guises in our world. If we believe in this Lord of Life and are his followers we will do all we can to encourage this life and hope in our world. God bless

Hinterland Boxing Club
Contributed by Stephen Pitt The club took a team of five athletes to the Acacia Ridge Hotel on June 26 for the Queensland Novice Titles. The competition was contested over three days with categories in experience of (C) 0 - 3 bouts (B) 4 - 7 bouts and (A) 8 to 15 bouts. Tiarna Collins competed in the 60kg Female Elite (A) Division. Tiarna boxed a hard semi final on the Saturday backing up on the Sunday for the final. Tiarna boxed her way to a gold medal with a skilful display using her height and reach to good advantage. Chaska Coolwell boxed in the 60 kg Youth (A) Division drawing a straight final bout on the Sunday. This was Chaska's first bout in the youth division and although he was up to the task there is a clear size and strength difference from the junior ranks, Chaska picked up a silver medal. Dan Mewha also drew a straight final on the Sunday boxing in the 69kg Elite (B) Division. Dan was having his first bout in three years and impressed with a lack of consistent work rate being the difference in the fight, going down on points to take out a silver medal. Last up Mitchell Chalmers boxed in the 75kg Elite (A) Division. Mitch boxed strongly in the semi final on the Saturday and backed up the following day in the final. This was a physically hard final bout with Mitch feeling the effects of fatigue from the day before. However to his credit Mitch never stopped trying going down in close point decision. Dana Coolwell also weighed-in. There were a few in Dana's division however unfortunately those opponents withdrew leaving Dana without a bout for the competition.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Sniffer the dog A man had just settled into his seat next to the window on the plane when another man sat down in the aisle seat and put his black Labrador in the middle seat next to the man. The first man looked very quizzically at the dog and asked why the dog was allowed on the plane. The second man explained that he was from the Police Drugs Enforcement Agency and that the dog was a 'sniffing dog' named Sniffer. Once the plane took off, the policeman said, “watch this” and asked Sniffer to “search”. He walked along the aisle, and finally sat very purposefully next to a woman for several seconds. Sniffer then returned to his seat and put one paw on the policeman's arm. The policeman said, “good boy”, and he turned to the man and said, “that woman is in possession
of marijuana and the authorities will apprehend her when we land.” “Gee, that's pretty good,” replied the first man. Once again, Sniffer searched the aisles. He sniffed about, sat down beside a man for a few seconds, returned, and this time he placed two paws on the agent's arm. The policeman said, “that man is carrying cocaine.” “I like it!” said his seat mate. Sniffer walked up and down the aisles again for a little while, sat down for a moment, and then came racing back to the policeman, jumped into the middle seat and proceeded to poop on the seat. The first man was really disgusted by this behaviour. So he asked the policeman, “what's going on?”The policeman nervously replied, ‘he's just found a bomb.” Submitted by Hugh, Beerwah

CANCER June 22 – July 22 Some of your feelings may become explosive which can help to clear the air under this full Moon week, but also cause some to take drastic measures. A confidential contact can be a real eye opener. Bargains are found, if you go off the beaten track now. LEO July 23 – August 22 The stars in the heavens above have been shining brightly with Venus and Jupiter in your sign! Your artistic muse flows with the opportunity to identify your strengths and weaknesses. This month's first week is very positive and you will enjoy social groups. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week has a super charged full Moon in Capricorn, a compatible sign to yours. You finally get to do what you want and you can take time off, being artistic or socialising with your friends. Many of your hopes, wishes and income dreams are coming true. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 There are triggers for you in the stars, especially under this full Moon, with emotional urgency between your work and your home life. There is a bright idea and beginning of a new travel plan. However, there may be some domestic complications at this time.
SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 A Capricorn full Moon this week means you should exercise to release frustrations, or to work off excess energy. Avoid going into risky places and travel carefully on the highways as road rage is apparent at this time. Neptune brings creative artwork to you now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 A financial matter needs attention for the next couple of weeks which may involve a loan, mortgage, credit card, insurance or tax matters. A friend shows you a quick solution to a problem or a great suggestion for a romantic outing. Go with any sudden changes. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The emphasis this week under the full Moon in your sign brings you marital and business partnership dealings. Jupiter and Venus indicate large scale negotiations and there is much talk with a business partner, lawyer or close friend. Bright new ideas pertaining to your home. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You achieve the best success this month by knowing the latest development in IT servicing. It is good to welcome new work, or methods, to promote yourself. The weekend sees the Moon back in your sign, allowing you personal freedom and perfect social contacts.
PISCES February 20 – March 20 You may feel a need to be open and authentic about who you are and how to express yourself. You will want to show your personal passions in a hobby, writing, art, or other recreational pursuits. Home life may provide a nice surprise introducing new changes now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The full Moon on July 2 shines an emotional light on your domestic and career axis. You can look for the joys of love, romance and creativity to provide luxury and pleasure. It could be a chance to shine in front of colleagues, or influential management. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You should be in high spirits as this month starts. This is because your ruling planet, Venus, unites with Jupiter in your home zone. Expect good news boosting positive moods about your home life. Jupiter connects to the full Moon ready for adventures. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 As the Sun moves through the sign of Cancer it makes a nice aspect to Neptune. This means you will feel the truth about your life’s direction. You will sense what to do or what path to follow. This full Moon week completes a government affairs matter.
