t GC&M News we are always very supportive of the great work done by all of the local chaplains. So when I saw the lovely photo of them gearing up for the annual chaplaincy golf day – I knew we had to put it on the front page! However it is at this point that my support has to end – I have tried out golf – but it was pretty much a humiliating event, with a lot of finger pointing, shouting and a few tears and yes all from me (not my team)! So I am hoping plenty of others, with a more mature approach to playing this frustrating game, might nominate a team for the ‘Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Golf Classic’ on Friday, June 17 at the Beerwah Golf Course from 12.00noon (registration from 11.00am). For chaplains Nikki, Linda, Donna and Mike, this event is the major fundraiser for the year. All profits go to the chaplaincy services at Beerburrum, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Landsborough State Schools and Beerwah State High School. If you would like to enter a team please contact Andrew Pearce on 0410 616 982 or andrew@blissfulbellies.com.au for further information.

Local News Rail crossing closures on the cards by Greg Brown

For more years than locals care to remember, governments, Ministers and Members of Parliament have been spruiking and promising the duplication and upgrade of the railway from Beerburrum to Nambour. Now it is but a heartbeat (or election vote) away from becoming a reality. The latest in the ‘congo line’ of studies, consultations, design concepts, business cases and investment decisions comes the current round of community consultation looking at the Beerburrum to Landsborough sector. According to Department of Transport and Main Roads information, the Beerwah to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project (or B2N) team want to identify any changes that may have occurred since the previous studies were completed. Specifically, the Department is asking for feedback on their plans to close the level crossing at Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains and the crossing on Caloundra Road, Landsborough; and to expand the ‘park and ride’ facilities at Landsborough station. The consequence for residents on Marshs and Barrs Roads will be that they will lose their direct access onto Steve Irwin Way.

However, the Department have offered two possible alternative options which would see new roads constructed parallel to the railway line to link up with Burgess Street at Glass House. For Landsborough, the consequences are undisclosed, as the Department are presenting what their consultation officers describe as a ‘clean slate’ – that is, they have not identified any other options other than to ‘eliminate’ the level crossing. Prior plans in 2009 did show that a new rail flyover bridge on Gympie Street North, past the Landsborough State School, was considered as the best option. However this is also not indicated on any consultation documents or maps. Nor has the Department presented any options for alternatives to closing the level crossing. If you missed the first two community information sessions, consultation officers will be running two further sessions at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (opposite the Post Office) on Wednesday, June 8 (5.30pm – 8.00pm) and Saturday, June 11 (10.00am – 12.30pm). If you have any interest in the effects of closing the Barrs Road level crossing or the possible cutting of Landsborough into two (as happened to Beerwah when their level crossing was closed), you may wish to attend. It may be your last chance.

16-year-old student flying solo Rowan Lear is a 16-year-old Glasshouse Christian College student who is really on the way up with his passion for flying. Last week, the Year 11 student flew solo from Caloundra Airport in a new Sling Aircraft after completing his practical instruction flight hours with GoFly Aviation. After passing his pre-flight solo exam, Damien Wills, a certified flying instructor from GoFly, said that Rowan was totally ready to fly alone. Rowan’s next goal is to complete another five hours solo so that he can then fly his family and school friends (that is, if their parents give permission). When asked what will be great about flying family he laughs and says that the best bit is that no-one can tell him how to fly and after all of the learner driver advice he has listened to, that will be fantastic. As Rowan continues to gain experience with additional flying hours and endorsements, he can go on to become a certified flight instructor. Rowan is modest about his achievements and when asked if he was fearful leaving the runway solo he says, “I wasn't nervous really at all, I'm actually more worried about school exams than flying a plane.” Rowan’s mum says that the concept of flying a plane solo unaccompanied is hard to comprehend when the law states drivers must be 17-years-old to drive by themselves. When she watches him fly she is just amazed

at his skills, self-confidence and calm nature that is so well suited to flying. Geradine thinks he could become a great certified instructor or commercial pilot. She also thinks it is important to encourage many and varied choices in life so Rowan can find his own passions. Rowan has had some unusual adventures that he tells few people about, such as being born in Florida, USA en route sailing around the world in a small yacht with his parents. Being an Australian with a green card was not planned, but it may come in handy, when seeking future career opportunities. For now, Rowan looks forward to finishing school at the end of next year and then spreading his wings.

Gardens Open at Maleny With Gardening on the Edge taking place this weekend, GC&M News were lucky enough to have a stickybeak preview around one of the open gardens in Maleny. Glenn and Graham have owned the two and a half acre property in Maleny for about six years. “When we first came here, it was almost a blank canvas … grass, some paths, scattered trees, veggie patch and fruit trees,” said Glenn. “We started by creating the framework of hedges and then created the mosaic of garden beds from them.” With Glenn being the avid gardener, and Graham being the ‘willing worker’, they would spend their spare time at the property digging holes, planting, watering and planning their layout. With no overall theme in mind, the garden layout and context grew organically, with form and function being guided by the original landscape, and by their own imaginations. “We were wanting a garden which was pleasing to look at, but easy to maintain, and added to the aesthetic values which we wanted to retain,” explained Glenn. A magnificent example is the banana grove.

The original large expanse of ‘feral’ banana trees were creatively transformed by thinning and removal, to create pathways, steps and a central open casual dining room. “With the endless trimming of leaves, it’s a lot of work to maintain the stems clean, and the ground layer open and clear,” says Glenn. But not only have they ended up with a cool, inviting space, they can enjoy an almost endless supply of bananas … well, what is left by the possums, brush turkey, lorikeets and parrots. One spectacular legacy that the previous owners have left is a plantation of Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus angustifolius) – a large native rainforest tree. With their system of buttress roots snaking across the ground and their tangle of branches above they give an almost other-worldly look to this part of the garden. The expansive grounds have elements of wildness (such as the Blue Quandongs) mixed with traditional formal as well. Here are deciduous Tropical Birch (Betula nigra) underplanted with flowering bulbs, swathes of Salvias in gardens in and around Camellias and Roses. Tree Dahlia’s tower and flower above, and Magnolias shed their sweet scent. The potager garden provides a constant supply of greens and herbs – if the hares leave them alone. Wildlife is more than catered for, with plenty of food and habitat making the garden a haven for a range of small and large birds – including whip birds, cat birds, and bower birds.

A landscaping feature at Glenn and Graham's Maleny property Most of their effort is now taken up with watering, weeding, mulching and pruning. “We have plans to extend some garden beds and change a few things around,” says Glenn. “But really it’s an evolving thing, and we have to constantly reassess what plants are doing well and what aren’t, as the canopy grows and the light conditions change. “It’s a labour of love,” says Glenn.

The Plug The annual Gardening on the Edge event is organised by the Maleny Garden Club, and sees six stunning gardens open to the public over this weekend (Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12), as well as a Garden Market expo at the Maleny Showgrounds. Entry into the Garden Market is free, and tickets to the open gardens are only $5.00 for one garden, $12.00 for three gardens or $20.00 for all six gardens. Tickets and garden trail maps are available at the Garden Market (Maleny Showgrounds).

Sorry Day at Glass House a success Contributed by Ana Greenfield Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre hosted a National Sorry Day event to mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week with the sharing of stories from Aunty Val, Aunty Fay and Aunty Denise, three sisters who grew up at the Cherbourg Aboriginal settlement in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Their stories were interesting, sometimes funny and sometimes sad, as they shared about their

life at Cherbourg and growing up as Aboriginal women in Queensland. Stories included needing permits to leave the community, men being sent away, working for no wages, living on rations that were not equivalent to the white people who lived there, fun times and school life. The Aunties volunteered their time and travelled from Brisbane via Kilcoy to share their stories. The audience was deeply appreciative to learn new information and to make new connections. One of the ladies present was so moved that she suggested starting a Reconciliation group in Glasshouse to build stronger relationships between the broader community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through events and other initiatives. If anyone is interested please give me (Ana) a call at the Neighbourhood Centre on 0438 187 838.

Expo and Fun Day For the past couple of years in mid-October, Celebrate Beerwah have organised a street party in Simpson Street, which have been highly successful events. This year however, the committee has decided to mix things up and instead of holding a street party they will host an Expo and Fun Day at Turner Park. And while the committee is called Celebrate Beerwah they have been wondering why they should stop with Beerwah when now is the time for growth across Glasshouse Country. The event will focus on showcasing the many different elements of the area including Glenview, Mooloolah, Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Peachester and Beerburrum. Committee Chair, Judy Tomlinson said the event will give those attending the opportunity to discover the uniqueness of our Glasshouse Country, its natural assets and country spirit that are on offer, and also our places to shop, relax, play or have an outdoor Glasshouse adventure. The Glasshouse Country Expo & Fun Day is planned for Saturday, October 22 in Turner Park, Beerwah (behind the library and hall). In the following year, the group hope that the celebrations can also expand to incorporate a number of events across the region, similar to the Glasshouse Country Festival that was held in the past. “We’re on the edge of something great in Glasshouse Country. We want everyone to do well. This is a journey that all our towns can go on together, by supporting one another in the

NBN’s plans for a wireless broadband rollout in Beerwah have suffered a major setback, with Sunshine Coast Council recently refusing their application to construct a 30m tower on Rupari Hill (behind the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre). The application drew early attention from council last September, when they flagged a number of serious issues including visual, land slip and environmental impacts. As part of the latest refusal decision notice, council highlighted flaws in the application pertaining to conflicts with the Sunshine

Coast Planning Scheme in areas such as the telecommunications and scenic amenity codes, and that the project failed to justify significant public interest. The tower was a key link in a network of proposed towers across the region – including the current application for a tower in Glass House Mountains. At this point, it is unknown how council’s refusal will impact on NBN’s construction plans to roll out the NBN network through Beerwah. NBN’s planning documents state that the Beerwah wireless towers were to commence in March 2017.

Free film screening to support Refugee Week In Support of Refugee Week, Maleny group ‘Women Out Front’ are hosting a free screening of the award winning documentary ‘Mary Meets Mohammad’ at the Maleny RSL Club on Saturday, June 18. Doors will open at 5.00pm for complimentary snacks and the RSL will open the licensed bar for further refreshments. The movie from Tasmanian director Heather Kirkpatrick centres around a community in Tasmania who are faced with fears and uncertainty when they find out that an Asylum Seeker Detention Centre is to be built in their area. The film follows the members of a local knitting club who are at first very much against the asylum seekers coming to their community but are persuaded to knit them beanies. When the time comes to present the beanies to the young asylum seeker men the ladies in the group have a change of heart when they eventually

meet the men and realise their vulnerability. The film highlights how misinformation and prejudice can be changed as human relationships are built. The film commences at 5.30pm followed by a light supper available for those who wish to stay. There will also be musical entertainment from Aleathea Monsieur, Sue Moxon and guests. If you would like more information about the evening please call Sue on 0439 943 261.

MOOLOOLAH DENTAL SURGERY David Zimmermann Mark Hall wrecked cars, or retrieving the vehicles that had driven off a cliff or into a ditch. “Our phone would ring many a night (in the middle of the night) and I would answer as a young teenager and then have to wake dad up and give him the instructions of where to go for an emergency call-out,” Tanya said. George also helped out the State Emergency Service over many years, lending them his own vehicles during emergencies. Like old time Maleny locals, he was a real community man and was also involved in Apex and Lions, doing everything he could to help, and never expected anything in return. Sadly, following an accident 25 years ago, George left Maleny, and following his recovery chose not to return to live in the community. However his heart was full of memories of his life here, so his family have decided to celebrate it in a location that was so special to him. The family are inviting all those who would like to come along for any of the time on Saturday to share in this celebration. Contact Tanya on 0412 866 401 for any further details.

By Lea Parkes Long-time residents of the Maleny and Conondale region will remember George Moffitt who was born in Conondale. His family moved up to Maleny when he was a very young schoolboy. George’s daughters Deanne and Tanya, along with his sister Jean, wanted to share the news of George’s recent passing and to invite those who knew George to come along to a celebration of his life. George operated Wilson’s Garage at the top end of Maple Street in Maleny for approximately 30 years, leaving school at 14 to start an apprenticeship as a mechanic, and his dad later purchased the business. These days the Garage is actually the Maleny Marketplace, so the girls thought it was a fitting location for family and friends to come together and remember George and share stories on Saturday, June 11 from 2.00pm, and for those who wish to meet up with them later they will be going to the Maleny Hotel from 5.00pm. Tanya describes her dad as a quiet man who loved his football, worked hard for the community, helped out wherever he could, and would do the ‘bloke’ thing at the end of each working day and go to the pub for a beer and a yarn with the locals (mind you, his working day did not end until 6.00pm or 7.00pm). “He was a very generous man, letting the community ‘book up’ their accounts and pay whenever they could afford to,” Tanya said. “He also operated a tow truck business and crane hire business, utilised for various reasons, but I mostly remember for saving people in

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News is proud to be the sole weekly newspaper covering everything local from Mapleton to Maleny to Mooloolah to Elimbah. We’re a truly local independent weekly newspaper. Local … the owners (Lea & Brownie) live local, the staff live local, the business trades with other local businesses. We sponsor and support local groups, sports and events to the tune of about $15,000 a year in advertising assistance. Independent … we’re not owned or controlled by

anyone else. You can talk with the owners, the designers, the sales reps and the writers. We’re printed by an independent printer too. Weekly … we now home deliver to Maleny every single week. Combine this with our other home delivery areas and we home deliver to more locals than anyone else – every week. Plus, we now have weekly pick-up points in Montville and Mapleton, on top of those already distributed far and wide around the region. Newspaper … we’re a true newspaper, “… a publication issued at regular and usually close

intervals, especially daily or weekly, and commonly containing news, comment, features, and advertising.” We cover what is happening now in your neighbourhood. We’re not a tourist publication … we look after locals first and foremost. We understand that local businesses rely on regular local customers for their bread and butter trade. That’s why we concentrate on great local news, views and events – as that’s what local people want to read about.

Rural Fire Open Day

Equipment presentation

Recently Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade hosted the annual Energex presentation of equipment to brigades in the Caloundra Rural Fire area which extends from Glass House in the south through the Hinterland to Boreen Point and Teewah Beach in the north. Energex CEO Terry Effeney, Dianne TonkinEnergex each year, by way of acknowledgement Taylor (Glass House) Ines Burkardt (1st Officer to our volunteer firefighting brigades, invites Tinbeerwah) QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll, Linda Rook (Glass House) and brigades to apply for specific equipment items to Tom Dawson (RFS Assistant Commissioner) assist brigades in the performance of their duties. Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) brigades from across the area were presented with more than $14,400 in portable pumps and fridges, flare kits, navigational devices, reversing cameras and more, at an official handover ceremony. The event, sponsored by Energex, was followed by a sausage sizzle and attended by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Katarina Carroll, Rural Fire Service (RFS) Assistant Commissioner Tom Dawson and Energex Chief Executive Officer Terry Effeney, as well as staff from Energex and Caloundra Rural Fire Service Area Office and volunteers from local brigades.

Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade will be opening their fire station on Saturday, June 11 from 9.00am to 1.00pm to celebrate Rural Fire Service Week. This is a statewide celebration of the dedication and commitment of the 36,000 men and women who volunteer their time to help keep Queensland communities safe. Rural Fire Service Volunteers are involved in fire prevention, including community education, fighting fires, managing the Permit to Light Fire System, and they also provide assistance during other disasters such as floods and storms. The fire station is on Ryan Street in Glass House Mountains, next to the neighbourhood centre and behind the Post Office. Come and meet the volunteers behind your local Brigade, and learn how to prepare your family and home against the threat of bushfire. The Landsborough Rural Fire Station will also be open to the public from 10.00am - 2.00pm. See page 2 for more details.

Fantastic raffle

The Glasshouse Rural Fire Service was really pleased with the results of their major raffle that they have been running for just over two months, with 2,000 tickets sold. They had 10 prize pools with a total of $2,298.00 worth of prizes up for grabs. Raffle Co-ordinator Georgia Heliotis said they were incredibly appreciative of the community’s support and positive response. The money raised will contribute towards vital equipment and necessary maintenance, which will ensure our ability to respond to future emergencies, she said. “A huge thankyou to the following businesses that without their support, our fundraiser would not have been as successful as it was,” she said. Nutrition for optimum eye health By Judi Coey

Nutrition plays a vital role in optimising eye health and reducing the risk of macular degeneration. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet is essential also for overall wellbeing. Often I am asked by my patients what they can do to maintain good vision. My answer is generally suggesting they adopt some simple practices such as: 1. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet 2. Eating dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit daily 3. Eating fish two to three times a week 4. Choosing low glycaemic index (low GI) carbohydrates instead of high GI 5. Eating a handful of nuts per week 6. Limiting fats and oils 7. Keeping a healthy lifestyle; maintaining healthy weight with regular exercise 8. If diagnosed with macular changes, consider taking a supplement in consultation with their doctor and using an Amsler Grid to check on changes 9. Decrease or cease smoking 10. Protecting their eyes from the sun Family history is a major risk factor for macular degeneration. Therefore, I encourage my patients with macular changes to ensure their family’s eyes are examined regularly. It is also essential they become vigilant in taking care of their family’s nutrition by buying and preparing food that helps protect their eye health. Please do not hesitate in contacting me on 5494 2877 for any further information or support on your eye health. Business feature JUNE 8 2016 |

Phil Simmons wears an admiral's cap

Growing up in Birmingham, England, Phil Simmons enjoyed performing in school productions of G&S, including a chorus fairy in Iolanthe, a Japanese noble in The Mikado, and Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore. Post school, he continued singing with a local musical group and appeared in Yeomen of the Guard (G&S) and Tom Jones (Edward German). In this June’s Maleny Singers’ production of HMS Pinafore, Phil plays Great Britain’s First Lord of the Admiralty – ‘a great and good man – for he told me so himself.’ Phil trained and qualified in London as an actuary and had a busy and rewarding career in the financial services industry. This took him to Toronto, Canada where he lived for three years, then Sydney, Australia (in 1987). From a base in Australia he spent three years in New Zealand, followed by three years back in England, before returning to Sydney. Other long-term work assignments took Phil to Singapore and Boston. He retired in 2004 and moved up to Witta, Maleny. After seeing the Maleny Singers’ first ‘full’ production, Trial by Jury, Phil joined the group. He has been in each major performance since, often taking a principal role, including Ralph (HMS Pinafore), Luiz (The Gondoliers), and Orpheus (Orpheus in the Underworld), Nanki Poo (Mikado), Archibald Grosvenor (Patience), Jack Point (Yeomen of the Guard), The Major General (Pirates of Penzance), Calcus (la Belle Hélène); plus minor roles in The Merry Widow and Die Fledermaus. Phil has served on the Maleny Singers’ Committee for many years, with spells as Treasurer and then President. He has had the role of ‘production manager’ for the past eight years, but stepped down from this role, and from the Committee last

year, when he took on the role of President of the Maleny Community Centre (which often feels like a full time job!). Phil’s wife Brenda has always been a regular supporter of the Singers and in recent years has done a fantastic job organising the front of house team for all shows, which from time to time includes sourcing and running the raffles.

The Plug When: Friday, June 24 evening performance at 6.30pm. Matinees will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 2.00pm Sunday, June 26 at 4.00pm. Location: Maleny Community Centre Cost: Adult $30.00, concessions $27.50, primary school children $15.00 Book via phoning the Maleny Visitor Centre on 5499 9033. F rs Far m e ed L o c ally O w n

By Sonia Clark There was great excitement in the Prep classroom last Wednesday, June 1 when the Twinnies, Paula and Bridgette Powers, visited Landsborough State School. The Twinnies were invited along to give a presentation about Pelicans to the students and talk about the recently hatched first Pelican to be born at their Rehabilitation Centre, which was named by one of the Prep students. Teacher’s aide Sharon Madgwick has been a long-standing volunteer with Landsborough School and through her work with the Twinnies she has been keeping the Twinnies, Brigitte and Paula with Prep class children up-to-date Teachers Aide Sharon Madgwick and with the recent developments Pelican naming competition winner at the Rehabilitation Centre. Kyanna The children were particularly interested to hear that a Pelican had laid an egg on February 21 (on the Twinnies birthday!). With all the excitement around the very first Pelican to be born at the Centre, the Twinnies mum Helen suggested that the children may enjoy the opportunity to name the new hatchling. Over the last six weeks, a competition to name the bird has been run with the two Prep classes submitting suggestions. The competition has also encouraged the children to learn more about the life cycle of the birds and learn more about native and waterbirds. The winner of the completion was Preppie Kyanna who named the new pelican ‘Kayla’ after her sisters name. If you would like to find out more about the rescue and rehabilitation work that the Twinnies do, see http://twinnies.com.au/ or like their Facebook page at Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue. The rehabilitation centre is located at 2147 Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough.

Funding helps local community groups Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell has welcomed a recent announcement that will provide funding to several worthy community groups in the Glass House electorate. Mr Powell reported that five clubs have shared in just over $90,000 through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to help them with the purchase of necessary equipment and upgrades to their club facilities. “We hear it all the time that our community groups are struggling to access funds that will enable them to purchase new equipment, or to upgrade their playground facilities, so to have these regular grants announced is a real win. “Most of the recipients in Glass House are using the funds to purchase new equipment which will not only have a positive effect on their current members but also go a long way to attracting new membership. “All of these community groups are run by volunteers and the application process is not an easy one to navigate so I congratulate those who have put in the effort and been successful this time around. The successful groups in Glasshouse Country and Maleny are Glasshouse Country Menshed Inc – upgrade facilities for Maleny Neighbourhood Centre – purchase equipment, and the Maleny State School upgrade playground equipment. www.gcnews.com.au

Thinking outside the box ... Business feature

Updates

Peachester CWA report

Robyn Davis along with her partner Ross Menzies are perfect examples of Transportable Shade Shed resellers who are embracing the changing face of business both on a local and global level. Robyn and Ross own a couple of businesses and by using the Saver6.com cloud based business support platform they are looking at innovative ways to build on the skills and businesses they have to increase and expand a wealth of opportunities. Based in Dubbo, Robyn comes from a public service background with over 25 years administration and service experience. Before being made redundant four years ago, she had worked for the Dubbo Ambulance Service for 22 years. Her partner Ross has extensive experience in road building, earth works and the handling of heavy machinery. Robyn is also a qualified horticulturist with plans to extend their 25 acre rural property to include a number of different and innovative business ideas. A few years back, they established a pallet racking business that installs metal frames for warehouses and commercial businesses; and coming across an advertisement for Transportable Shade Sheds, they saw the potential in investing as resellers to compliment their current businesses. “I like to have my fingers in many pies and I could see that both my nursery business and pallet shelving business would benefit from the additional revenue opportunity available with the shade sheds which tie in well with both the nursery and warehouse industries,” explained Robyn. This diversity of thinking and building upon current skill sets to create further opportunity by ‘thinking outside of the box’ is what Saver6.com is all about. Realising the changing face of business and wanting to empower small business owners, Saver6.com have just launched a new online magazine – www.saver6magazine.com – which seeks to explore and follow these new ways of doing business. The magazine will encourage, inspire and provide a platform to inform readers with real stories, trends and innovation from worldwide sources. The home page of the newly launched site states that … “The business landscape is perpetually moving at an extraordinary rate due, in great part, to the internet. Never before has studying consumer trends and staying abreast of competitors been so necessary. In order to capitalise on that exposure, we need to seek information, mentors, training options and facilitators to assist our business goals.” Robyn and Ross are keen to expand their current businesses and with the additional assistance of Saver.6.com this is possible. Although Robyn has an administration background she is still developing her online skills especially in the multimedia area. Saver6.com provides targeted marketing advice and product development. They have developed a website for Robyn and have assisted in online marketing campaigns and flyer creation and distribution for Tru’Fit Shelves and Shade Sheds. “It’s been great as it saves me so much time and it also extends my own knowledge of the various online platforms where we can market and promote our business. The guys at Saver 6.com are really good, they place ads for me on Gumtree and Ebay and just help manage the online presence so that I can get on and think of other business opportunities while developing our current businesses,” said Robyn. If you know someone around the Dubbo area who is looking to purchase a multi use transportable shade shed then contact Robyn and Ross on 02 6884 0166 or find them on facebook. If you would like to find out more about local opportunities then contact Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Please call Robyn Davis, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. She is available to help you with your Transportable Shade Shed purchase, from your initial enquiry, right through to installing it on your property. Give her a call today!

Well done ladies! We had our Mother’s Day luncheon at Pasta D’Vine inviting the menfolk who help us. What fun, great food, most having sweets, and good company. Thank you Sue and Oskar. We had a special meeting where Cath was asked to be our acting International Officer for our International Day. The day was great with Peachester cooking the main course and Beerwah the sweets. The display, stage and the school children's work was impressive. You could have heard a pin drop while the DVD played, even when things played up a bit, nobody moved. Greenland is such an interesting place to learn about, the highlight of the day was the visit by 'Diva' a Siberian husky led into the hall by a correctly dressed Jeff. The lucky door was won by Peg and the raffle by Muriel. Thank you to all who helped make the day such a great success. Some of our ladies went to the Nambour North Coast Divisional finals.

Many of Glasshouse Country Men's Shed members are ex Service personnel, so there was no shortage of volunteers to help with traffic control and the general logistics required for the Anzac Day services held at the Cenotaph which was recently relocated to Turner Park, Beerwah. Councillor Rick Baberowski generously organised Sunshine Coast Council support along with RSL members who worked hard to have the beautiful sandstone Cenotaph and surrounding gardens ready for the Anzac Day ceremony. In making the presentation to the Men's Shed, President Damian mentioned that following the closure of the RSL premises in Beerwah, the new Beerwah and District RSL Sub-branch has been established. The new Sub-branch will be welfare based with dedicated welfare and pension officers playing an important role in its operation. The immediate priority is to establish new premises and return to being a happy and enjoyable venue for locals and visitors to enjoy. Australian Liberty Alliance Party Web: www.australianlibertyalliance.org

My name is John Spellman, and I have some great news for the residents of Fisher who want to see a genuine change to our political landscape. The Australian Liberty Alliance party was formed last year as a direct result of concerned citizens, such as myself, banding together to fight for the return of Australia to its core values. The ALA has endorsed me to stand as its candidate in the federal seat of Fisher. The ALA is also running three candidates for the Senate in Queenland. My wife Elly and I live on the Sunshine Coast where we are close to our children and grandchildren. I have been a farmer, a self employed business man, a church pastor, a worker and a boss. Whatever happens to me in life, I always seems to find myself in a leadership role, and I am ready to be part of a team to lead Australia. I’m concerned about the future of our country, and the future of our grandchildren. What legacy are we going to leave them if we do not make a stand now? I believe, as a nation, we are running out of time to protect what we embrace as dear to us. In another three to five years it may be too late to stop the rot. We have to win back Australia for Australians. We need to rebuild our manufacturing and rural base. We need to keep Aussie jobs here, we need to get back to basics in the classroom and we need to be prepared to stop the threat to our way of life presented by Islam. The Australian Liberty Alliance has, as a part of its core manifesto, policies to right these wrongs being suffered by hard working Australians. I invite you to ‘Make A Stand With Me’ as I attempt to climb Everest in becoming the federal member for Fisher. If you would like to meet me for a chat, I will be at the ALA stand at the Nambour Show on June 10-12 . You can also find out all you need to know about the ALA at its website. DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Your vote will help shape Australia.

Half way to the finish line by Greg Brown It’s the half way mark in the marathon election campaign. With the electorate of Fisher having no incumbent candidate, it’s a clean slate for voters to choose from. But this means that all six current candidates are relatively unknown to most readers (and voters) of the region. This week is the start of our ‘questions to the candidate’ series, which we will run each week until the election (don’t forget, it’s Saturday, July 2).

BILL GISSANE

We hope that by focusing on different topics, issues and policy areas, you will get a better idea of which candidates you feel represent your views on life and society, and which you think will best represent the region in parliament. If you have something you’d like us to consider as a question to the candidates, please contact us on editorial@gcnews.com.au Postal voting is still open to those who will be away from the area on July 2. To apply for a postal vote, either visit www.aec.gov.au or pick up a form at your local post office. Prepoll voting (called ‘early voting’) opens on June 14. Q1

I was with my mum when she was receiving chemo for a blood disorder. When the first course proved unsuccessful, she begged me not to allow her doctors to proceed with a second course, due to the suffering caused by the side effects. After discussions, the course of action taken was to make her comfortable and she died about a week later, due to complications from her disease. Seeing her at peace in that last

week confirmed in my mind that the terminally ill should be entitled to depart in a manner of their choosing and I support that position.

Q2

The Fair Work Commission will decide on penalty rates and we will abide by the decision. Labor will make a strong submission to retain penalty rates should we gain government. At a local level, much more can be done to look for alternatives to deliver win/win outcomes.

Q1

Jesus went round healing people, not euthanising them. I am completely in favour of free or subsidised palliative end of life care (subsidised or free dentistry to the elderly and all Australians as part of Medicare) and I am completely opposed to disposing of people even if they do feel or are made to feel a burden to others. Both voluntary and involuntary euthanasia are completely off the agenda.

Q2 We live in a service based economy and if

people choose to work in these sectors I see no reason to penalise their employers. Employment and company benefits should be the result of competitiveness and choice offered by employers to their employees and not the other way round. The more jobs there are available to employees, the more choice there will be made available, and therefore competitiveness of employee benefits to recruit those workers.

Q1

Terminally ill people experiencing intolerable pain, suffering or distress, should be able to choose to die a peaceful and dignified death at the time of their choosing. A 2011 survey found that 75% of Australians believed that a terminally ill person should be allowed to access physician assisted suicide. The Greens’ Dying with Dignity legislation will provide terminally ill people with access to 22

medical assistance to end their lives, establish safeguards to protect the vulnerable, and protect physicians who provide medical assistance.

Street, Maroochydore. However, the AEC may open temporary Divisional Offices to cater as an early voting centre – we’ll bring you these details if and when they are announced.

Question to the Candidates

Q1

What is your point of view as to whether terminally ill patients should be able to legally end their own lives with medical assistance?

Q2

Would you support/not support a proposal to cut the Sunday penalty rates down to the same level as Saturday penalty rates, and why? When businesses don’t open, revenue is lost and workers don’t receive paid hours, a lose/lose outcome. If elected, I will convene a summit of local business and labour representatives to seek successful commercial outcomes whilst protecting employees pay and conditions. There have been a number of attempts to bring business and labour together and I believe with goodwill we can reach the right answer here on the Coast if we can move away from the win/lose results others propose. My experience as a successful business manager includes many negotiations between various parties where we have achieved win/win results. What’s needed is vision, imagination and a willingness to consider things from a different perspective. I look forward to being part of that positive future. I would also like to see complete freedom of choice offered by employers to their employees of how much and how many benefits are to be offered to them because it should be their choice too about how they dispose of their earnings. There has been far too much tinkering with what and how employers i.e. ABN holders who provide 80% -90% of employment to this now temporary, part time, casual economy. I will reduce the burden of taxation completely on ABN businesses and replace the GST and income tax in Australia with a Gifts Goods Services Tax or GGST.

unsociable hours that take them away from family and friends. I appreciate there are arguments for employing more people if penalty rates are lowered but this might persuade skilled staff to leave the industry as they face less take home pay and reduced conditions of employment. A young chef I recently spoke to said he would leave the industry if he did not get compensation for working weekends. The Greens support a fair society and are concerned by the growing inequality in Australia having taken the decision to legislate to maintain weekend penalty rates. The Greens are the only party committed to protecting penalty rates through legislation. We believe we have to take a real stand on this in the parliament and enact laws to address inequality and provide a fair go for workers. www.gcnews.com.au

Q1

On the subject of euthanasia, I believe an adult has every right to terminate his / her own life. However, I do not believe that any other person should be immediately involved in the act of terminating another’s life. Whist a good case can be made on compassionate grounds to end someone’s life, we must also acknowledge that we do not live in a perfect world, and such grounds can and will be taken advantage of by unscrupulous people wanting to end someone’s

life for their own advantage. Therefore I think it is best that active participation in ending a human life should remain as a punishable crime of murder to ensure fundamental values and legal boundaries remain intact. This final phase of our life is best left in the hands of well-trained palliative care workers and compassionate doctors, not those of politicians and judges.

We candidates for Online Direct Democracy are very different to the candidates of other parties. With our system, Australians don’t look at our policies and adapt to our position – Online Direct Democracy looks at the policy positions of Australians, and then our policy is built by you. Therefore, it is impossible for me to answer these questions from Online Direct Democracy’s perspective because our Party’s actions, on every decision we would make in parliament, are determined by you – registered voting Australians.

Q2

The reality of our world today is that we live in a 24/7 environment. When Sunday penalty rates were initially introduced, it was a way of compensating people for missing out on family, worship, sporting and recreational time. Sundays were universally accepted as a day of rest, and people working on that day were suitably remunerated for doing so. That criteria, unfortunately, is no longer relevant in today’s society. I believe that to reduce Sunday penalty rates to the same level as Saturday penalty rates will help employers put on more staff, thus providing more employment opportunities – especially for our younger people. This is particularly important for a region like the Sunshine Coast which has a lot of uni students looking for part-time work to help them make ends meet. to have, if they so wish, access to a medically assisted, quick, peaceful and dignified death.’

Q2

The web platform that we use to get this feedback is called www.pollyweb.org Of course, I have personal opinions and I am happy to share them; but please remember that what I think doesn’t matter, because I have signed an agreement to do what you (Australia) tell me to do.

With weekend penalties, we must decide whether we want to stick to the convention of designating weekends as different to week days, and whether Sunday is different to Saturday. Years ago, Monday to Friday were the normal trading days, but now we can find open shops every day. Times have changed so we need to ask if Saturday and Sunday are still different to the other week days? When we answer that question we will know how to apply their penalty rates. Whatever the decision here is, we must never make it acceptable to expect a person to work every day of the week.

Q1

I respect the right for everyone to express a view on this very personal issue and that there are very strongly held views both for and against euthanasia. Personally, I am opposed to euthanasia.

Q2

The decision regarding the retention of penalty rates will be made by the Independent Fair Work Commission and like all LNP candidates, I will abide by that decision.

Local Paper Daisies There are two spectacular local Paper Daisies, the White Paper Daisy (Coronidium elatum) and the Yellow Paper Daisy (Xerochrysum bracteatum). Both these species are members of the Asteraceae (Daisy) Family, which also includes many less than popular exotics such as Cobbler Pegs, Cats Tongue, Fleabane, Blue Top etc. What they do have in common with these weeds, is that they are pioneers of bare ground. Many Daisies are the first plants to colonise cleared ground – that’s why we are so familiar with them as weeds, because one thing us humans seem to like doing is clearing! Being from tough Australian stock, paper daises often thrive and survive in the hardest of soils, such as road sides and landslips. The windblown seed can spread far and wide, and colonise bare ground in the ash bed of freshly burnt country. The Yellow Paper Daisy is an annual forming a 0.5 – 1m bush that you may see on roadsides on the west side of the range. The White Paper Daisy is a taller biennial (often lasting several years) found in a few patches of high country Eucalypt forest such as Bellthorpe and Curramore. Paper Daisies are also great in cultivation; the trick is not to spoil them. Well drained soils and a light mulch and don’t worry too much about fertiliser and you’ll have masses of Paper Daisy flowers in no time at all.

Environment Finalist in prestigious waterways awards

Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) and over 30 other community, industry and government stakeholder groups were recently announced as finalists in the 2016 Healthy Waterways Awards, for their collective efforts to enhance and protect our iconic Pumicestone Passage. Environmental Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay welcomed the nomination for the 2016 Healthy Waterways Government Stewardship Award and said it provided validation of council’s work to become Australia’s most sustainable region. “We are very excited and honoured to have been acknowledged for our collaborative project: the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan 2013-2016,” Cr McKay said. “Each year Healthy Waterways coordinates an awards program that recognises and celebrates the dedication and passion of people and groups that are on the ground working to keep waterways clean and healthy. “In response to declining ecosystem health in Pumicestone Passage, council and MBRC, in partnership with around 30 stakeholders (Pumicestone Catchment Network), have been implementing the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan for the past three years. “The Network has improved water quality, restored waterway habitats and promoted the values, understanding and sustainable use of the catchment and waterways. As a result of their ongoing commitment and action, this successful partnership is being recognised across the region. “This Network provides a platform for ongoing planning, partnerships and action to respond to growing pressures such as population growth and climate change, and protect the Pumicestone Passage into the future.” The awards ceremony will be held Friday, July 8. For further information on the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan visit council’s website.

Adiantum hispidulum Rough Maidenhair Fern is a very widespread species, found from Victoria to north Queensland, across to the Northern Territory and the top of Western Australia. It also occurs from tropical eastern Africa through Asia/Malaysia to New Zealand and other Pacific Islands. Rough Maidenhair Fern is common in rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests, and along creek lines and in moister spots in more open forest. It prefers soils high in organic matter, and is often found among rocks where leaf litter has accumulated. It is frequently seen growing along road and track cuttings where seepage and shade are available; established clumps can tolerate dry spells quite well, along with fire. Attractive pinkish-red new fronds are quickly produced after rain, contrasting with the dark green older fronds. It is a hardy clumping fern, growing to 30 to 40 cm in height and 50 to 60 cm across. Fronds are fan-shaped with around seven fingers ranging in length from around 15 cm to 3 cm. Each finger has leaflets arranged alternately along its length. Adiantum is a well-known genus of ferns, commonly known as ‘maidenhairs’. There are about 200 species worldwide, with around nine native to Australia. Maidenhair ferns have long been popular in cultivation, with many selected forms and hybrids available; they are widely grown throughout the world as glasshouse, bush house, and indoor plants. As with most ferns, when grown as a container plant it should not be kept over-wet; this is a common cause of failure. Rough Maidenhair will often self-regenerate in rainforest plantings once there is enough shade to prevent competition from grasses and other weeds, and especially where there are banks of bare soil with some water seepage. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. An exotic non-native reptile amnesty is underway until June 10 in an attempt to protect our native wildlife. Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Leanne Donaldson said the amnesty allows people to hand in non-native reptiles (turtles, lizards, snakes) penalty free before the implementation of the Biosecurity Act 2014 on July 1. It’s illegal to keep non-native reptiles as pets in Queensland as they pose a real threat to our native wildlife. “A single pregnant snake or turtle could establish a population that could out compete native species and be impossible to eradicate,” said Minister Donaldson. “Exotic reptiles also carry diseases that, if introduced into Queensland, have the potential to wipe out native reptiles. “Under the new laws harsher penalties will apply to those keeping declared pests in Queensland, including jail time.”

School News Simultaneous Storytime

Students from Years 1, and 2 gathered together in the school library to hear classroom teacher Mrs Collins read the delightful storybook, 'I got this hat' by Jol and Kate Temple. As part of the National Simultaneous Storytime campaign, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author is read simultaneously in libraries and schools across the country. Support staff looked on all wearing wonderful hats, as the children engaged in this fun story. The idea of the simultaneous storytime is to promote the value of reading and literacy for young children, encompassing key areas of the Early Learning Years Framework. Beerwah State School has a magnificent library under the direction of Bron Ried. The library is a place where students can choose to visit, before school and during lunch, to further develop their reading skills and love of books.

Chappy week support

There was sunshine, smiles and silly socks galore, as Landsborough State School celebrated Chappy Week. This is an annual event to acknowledge all the good things Chaplains do for schools and students. Landsborough's celebrations involved a number of activities including a 'Guess the lollies in the jar' competition, a 'Chappy Meal Deal' from the school tuckshop and the sale of 'Chappy chap sticks'. The week was capped off by 'Silly Sock Day'. Staff and students were encouraged to wear their most colourful, crazy socks and contribute a gold coin to support the work of their Chappy. There were stripes, polka dots, swirls, rainbows, mismatched socks and even socks with things sewn on to them! The children enjoyed comparing their silly socks with each other. Chappy Week was a perfect opportunity to thank school Chaplain, Linda Whysall, for her support and friendly face around the school. Students enjoyed comparing their silly socks with each other

Cultural experience

Mooloolah State School students were lucky enough to have Goombuckar Creations come to our school recently with their cultural bus. Every year level from Prep to Year 6 attended the incursion which was inside a bus. It is a great Indigenous Learning platform for students. It was an exciting hands on experience from the Gubbi Gubbi tribe and they entertained the children with dreamtime stories, art, exhibitions and games time. It is about the students learning about local Indigenous places, people, culture and stories from our region. The students came away talking about all different things they had learnt or seen. They were intrigued and had lots of questions for the presenters. They enjoyed the art time the most with many painting indigenous symbols of communication and painting their bodies. Many students said it was educational and fun and they would have liked them to stay longer or come back again. Mooloolah State School would like to thank the presenters, Lauren, Karen and Kerry from Goombuckar Creations for their valuable input to our learning. It was a fabulous to see so many students actively participating in such a great event.

Wandiny Day Celebrations By Sonia Clark Over 150 local primary and high school students came together recently at Beerwah High School to celebrate their annual Wandiny Day. Organised by Beerwah High School’s Indigenous Students Council and Indigenous Community Advisor, Aleccia Franks-Smith, this year’s event was held during National Reconciliation Week. The day which celebrates indigenous culture, is a way for local students with indigenous heritage to come together and learn more about their traditional culture through a series of interactive workshops and discussions. Wandiny comes from the Gubbi Gubbi phrase for ‘everyone gathering’. It is a wonderful way to describe the inclusive event which, now in its seventh year, had students from five local state schools; Beerburrum, Beerwah, Landsborough, Elimbah and Mooloolah along with students from Beerwah High, attending the celebrations. Commencing at 9.00am, President of the Indigenous Students Council, Abbey Shaw gave a moving welcome speech followed by a ‘Welcome to Country’ by local traditional custodian Lyndon Davis. A delicious morning tea was served, including a massive Wandiny Day cake cut by student leaders. The morning tea was then followed by workshops including traditional dancing, message stick and rock painting, traditional artefacts and their meanings and a collaborative mural painting depicting the Glasshouse Mountains.

Indigenous student leaders cutting the Wandiny Day cake with Indigenous Community Advisor Aleccia Franks-Smith “This is a great day where our local school kids from Indigenous backgrounds get to meet other children. It provides a sense of belonging and positive cultural impact as well as reinforcing their cultural heritage,” said Indigenous Community Advisor, Aleccia Franks-Smith. The day had a number of indigenous mentors interacting with the students, who were invited to participate in a number of fun and informative activities that both celebrated and reinforced the significance of traditional culture.

Indigenous artist De Greer-Yindimincarlie led a mural workshop that depicted the Glasshouse Mountains and when completed will be proudly displayed at the school

You Said It Which way to vote?

As we grind on through what seems like an interminable election campaign, it does give us some time to take a deep breath and seriously think about what outcomes we might want postelection. As usual, we have been listening to the endless argy bargy from the major parties about “cleaning up the mess” of the previous government, a litany of who broke previous promises, and how the other side's election promises can’t be funded. This goes until one or the other side is elected, and then the whole cycle is repeated, until the next leadership coup or the next election. Tiresome isn’t it? How do we usually decide which way we will vote? For some it’s a simple matter of voting for the party or person “I’ve always voted for”, or “I quite like the way so and so looks/speaks” or maybe for some it’s shopping through the promises to pick what will personally benefit them. Personally I have probably used any one of the above in the past, and just about always have been let down or disappointed in the end for any number of reasons. Usually by the broken promises and the lack of any leadership to actually ‘lead’ in the true sense of word rather than just politicise the important issues. This time around, I won’t be focussing on what’s in it for me, or which personality/party I like best, but rather what’s in it for my children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren. Goodness knows the world we live in is in trouble, from whichever direction you want to look at it. So real leaders and parties who actually lead and act in the interests of the generations following are needed to deal with the problems of here and now, rather than acting for their own political self-interests and gain (which is what we and the country/world have been suffering from for far too long). Are our candidates or so-called leaders up to filling such a role? If not, what are our political choices? Who has the goods to act for the longer term future and not just tomorrow and the next election? If any candidate/party can’t undertake to genuinely act in the interests of our/their kids and their futures, don’t vote for them. They don’t deserve to be there. Our kids really desperately do need better than this. Cliff and Yvonne Schnick Glass House Mountains

Good advice

A bit of advice I picked up from someone in the bank, and I thought it was worth sharing: Do not leave your registration forms or insurance forms of your car in your glove box. If someone steals your car they have all your information like name, address, phone number, etc. Julie Savage Beerwah

Urgent upgrade required

It seems in recent issues of GC&M News, quite a few people had a bit to say about the ongoing discussions about the Bruce Highway upgrade, and it seems the the general consensus is that a four lane upgrade is urgently needed. Well this very morning the Bruce Highway has been closed and traffic disrupted yet again for the third day in a row because of a traffic crash, so I would suggest a six lane upgrade is required. By the time they build the extra four lanes, it will once again be redundant and won't be able to cope with the traffic that is growing by the day. It’s time governments at both State and Federal levels, got over the Ostrich Syndrome, pulled their heads out of the sand, and applied some forward thinking, instead of planning what will amount to nothing more than a band aid fix with four lanes. There also seems to be a consensus that Steve Irwin Way should not be upgraded to four lanes because quite a few properties front onto Steve Irwin Way, and those residents would be subject to difficulty driving into and out of those properties. Well I would suggest that problem already exists, so at the risk of upsetting some readers, they too should pull their heads out of the sand, because this can be overcome with a service road. In my humble opinion Steve Irwin Way should also be upgraded, because it's already having difficulty coping with the ever-growing local traffic. Peter Bowles Glass House Mountains

DTMR’s farcical ‘no information session’

The Community Information Session at the Landsborough Sports Complex was a farce!!! The flyer asked for ‘community feedback on a number of new reference design considerations which had not previously been identified elimination of rail crossing at Landsborough and extension of parking area’. It was labelled Beerburrum to Nambour but was really only Beerwah to Landsborough. It should be noted that options for the parking area were previously designed and costed in 2012 and the elimination of both Landsborough level crossings was canvassed about 10 years ago. A blank map of Landsborough was presented to viewers - no options, no suggestions - zilch. One poster had two of the same photos of Glass House with one labelled Landsborough. For Landsborough, there was no timeline for a possible project, no possible options upon which to comment, no justification for needs and no extent of the scope of work. The terms ‘business case’ and ‘reference design’ were not satisfactorily explained. How can anyone provide relevant and informed feedback or comment about nothing? Unfortunately, it was an insult to local people and a sad waste of people’s time to come and see nothing. The only positive thing for the night was a set of proposals prepared by Dave Ritson which gave a possible solution for Landsborough so that it did not end up like the Beerwah outcome which cut off the town. When will government departments and agencies learn how to undertake meaningful consultation and the provision of real information? Jim Straker Maleny

Tired of the rhetoric

Too busy to come to us? We’ll come to you, 7 days a week www.shearerfinance.com.au

I am an ordinary Aussie who has had enough. I am sick and tired of the rhetoric coming from the two ‘major’ party leaders. They treat us as their playthings, lacking the intelligence or motivation to make choices or decisions for ourselves. Take the Prime Minister’s comments regarding Pauline Hanson for instance. He tells us that she ‘would not be a welcome presence on the Australian political scene’. Why? Because she has the guts to say what most of us think! What arrogance! www.gcnews.com.au

This man has forgotten that it is us, the people, who have the final say on who we consider to be a welcome presence in OUR parliament. Maybe Turnbull has outstayed HIS welcome. On the Opposition side, we have Bill Shorten pushing the immigration and refugee barrow like there is no tomorrow (he is, in this, a mere pawn of the Greens). Simply put, we cannot afford to keep bringing in refugees and immigrants. We don’t have enough jobs or resources available for the people living here now. It is utter madness to keep bringing in more people only to have them added to our overburdened welfare system – a system that is costing us billions a year. My name is John Spellman and I have had enough. If you have had enough too, if you are ready for some real change on the Australian political scene, then I invite you to ‘make a stand with me’ at this election. I am standing in the seat of Fisher, as the Australian Liberty Alliance Party’s (ALA) candidate. Together, we can put a stop to this rot and win Australia back for Australians. John Spellman, Liberty Alliance Party Candidate for Fisher

Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project

The recent distribution of a leaflet containing information about the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project has caused confusion and unnecessary alarm amongst residents. The future of the North Coast Rail Duplication is one of the biggest issues for residents of the Sunshine Coast with community members, particularly daily commuters, calling out for a financial investment to see the duplication delivered. I have proudly campaigned on behalf of constituents for over seven years and I’m frustrated that this vital project continues to be left unfunded by the current Government. The most recent call for community feedback is misleading and is causing people to get excited about a project that quite frankly will be decades away under the existing Government. They are holding information sessions to talk about a project that is only in the business case phase and people need to understand this is not a sign the duplication will actually be built any time soon. What’s most concerning is the literature that has been distributed in the last week that refers to the ‘elimination’ of the level crossings in Landsborough and Barr’s Road. I met with Queensland Department of Transport officials just before they issued their flyer and made it very clear they should stay away from using words such as ‘elimination’ and instead reaffirm their commitment to finding safer alternatives than what we already have in place - it's about ‘replacing’ these level crossings, not ‘eliminating’ them. It is clear from the outraged constituents that have contacted me they did not take my advice. I would like to reassure the community that I will work with them and the Department to ensure there are safe crossings at these sites - whether it Hin terlan be through overpasses, underpasses or something d Acco unting Service similar. s I would urge Phone community members to share their 5439 01 88 5439 02this issue directly with Translink own feedbackFax on 88 at this email – B2N@tmr.qld.gov.au or by phone admin@hin tertax.com. 1800 785 974. au Va PO BOX 649 1/13 TURN , BEERWAH QL D 4519 ER ST, BE ERWAH QLD

I’m very much looking forward to the fabulous three-day Knitfest Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival coming to Maleny from June 10. The main street of Maleny will be wrapped thoroughly in yarn bombs and decorations as it comes alive with workshops, guest speakers, music and craft markets. Another must-do event for locals this month is the Mooloolah Rodeo, in town at Mooloolah Recreation Grounds on June 17. As well as the main event - Honky Tonk Bull Riding from 6.30pm - there will be live music by X-Factor contestant Judah Kelly along with local talent The Chontia Trio. Come along and support the Mooloolah State School with much-needed fundraising. My apologies for any confusion I caused in last month’s column for providing the incorrect date.

Works programmed for Brandenburg Road

A heads up, following concerns raised about sections of Brandenburg Road, Mooloolah, council inspected the road and will be undertaking routine maintenance grading within the next two weeks, weather permitting. In the interim, corrective works have commenced to rectify the worst sections of the road.

A genuine result in health comes from the food we eat

by Judy Timm

The problem here lies with ‘what food is the best for our body’. Not all the labelled good foods are always so good. I have seen some amazing results over the past 15 years with using ‘Food Intolerance Testing’. It takes the guess work out of what you ‘can’ and ‘cannot’ eat. One elderly client, who was tested, reported that in the last year he had significantly less hospital admissions. The only change he made was not eating certain foods which were highlighted in red on the test report. Even he was sceptical at first until he noticed he was breathing easier with less congestion. Another client found relief with her eczema. She was already avoiding gluten, wheat and dairy

Acupuncture

products. The results itemised specific foods to avoid and indicated she could eat some gluten and wheat products. Also she was elated to have lost 16 kg over an eight month period, reflective of a body working more effectively without the burden of reactive foods. The test is non-invasive and all that is needed is a hair sample, perfect for all ages including infants. For more information contact Judy on 5439 0097 Mob 0419 339 104.

Hi Everyone

W

elcome to our second Seniors feature for 2016. Trust that you will find our advertising and stories interesting and useful. As we put the final pages together I was chatting to our proof reader about what age we become seniors. Is it when you are entitled to have a Seniors Card or is it just when you feel like a senior? We know that we have quite a lot of readers who are only just seniors and a lot of readers who are clearly much younger, but they might just be reading this section to be able to give advice and suggestions to the much older parents. We always like to talk about shopping locally, and each time we do one of these features it is great to see just how many products and services those are available either in our local townships or not too far away. In a few months time we will be doing another of these features so if you know of an inspiring older member of our community who you think the rest of us would like hearing their story – make sure you let us know. In the past we have featured locals who have sky dived, climbed in the Himalayas or some other crazy extreme activity – but we are just looking for interesting stories so they don’t have to have Regards, participated in extreme sports!

U3A - Variety of local lecture topics University of the third age, or what is commonly known as U3A, is for people who are no longer working full-time, but wish to continue to learn and broaden their horizons. There is a lecture series which operates on a weekly basis during term times and generally there is a new speaker covering a wide variety of topics at each venue, each week. They operate from venues over the coast, Caloundra, Coolum, Maleny, Nambour Visitors are welcome to come once to a lecture, and if they'd like to return, are asked to join U3A in order to do so. The next lecture at Maleny will be part one of a lecture by Dave Abernethy entitled ‘A Journey down the Volga River’. The lectures will explore the blood stained history of some of the most important cities in Russia. The lecture is on Tuesday, June 14, at 9.30am in the Masonic Lodge Hall, Tamarind Street. Phone Yvonne for details 0404 466 372. The topics are varied and can be viewed on the U3A website, u3asunshine.org.au under ‘Lectures’ which also shows contact details for each venue.

Described as ‘the most comprehensive, yet easily understood guide to estate planning’, Slater and Gordon Wills Expert Rod Cunich has recently launched his new book that aims to break down the complex barriers of estate planning for the everyday person. ‘Understanding Wills and Estate Planning’ is the essential guide for people looking to ensure their exact wishes are carried out, no matter what the circumstance. Mr Cunich said everyone needs a will, that’s why he wrote his book so it could be understand by anyone. “Estate planning isn’t all about death. It includes things like guardianship or power of attorney, which most people don’t even think about,” Mr Cunich said. “These involve appointing someone to make medical, financial or legal decisions on your behalf, in the event that you can’t, either because of failing mental capacity, or maybe you’re injured and unconscious after an accident. “Good intentions aside, there is no guarantee that your unwritten wishes will be carried out. Either make the decision yourself or it’s out of your hands and will be decided by the courts.” Mr Cunich’s book also explores the highly complex area of estate planning for families with disabled children. “Parents of children with a disability find it hard to plan for their child’s longterm future and often worry about who’ll care for their child when they can’t,” Mr Cunich said. “These families rank amongst those most in need of certainty and clarity around their family’s future, but have to live with a future clouded by insecurity. “Slater and Gordon has proudly collaborated with disability service providers and investment planners to develop an Australian-first service to give these families hope and security. “The service has four key steps, which address: the child’s lifetime needs; the parents’ lifetime needs; development of a financial and succession plan; complemented by ongoing reviews. Mother Anna Booth said the service and Rod’s book have both lifted an enormous weight off her shoulders. “My daughter has an intellectual disability so her future depends upon me having an estate plan that is tailored to her needs,” Ms Booth said. “This book makes sense of the complex interaction between wills and trusts, which has been a great help for me.” The book is available in bookstores (Dymocks, Angus and Robertson, University Bookstores etc) and online as well.

The hidden risks in snoring Always feeling tired? Crave a daily nap? Find it difficult to concentrate? You could be suffering from OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). Obstructive sleep apnea (or apnoea) is a common affliction that affects thousands of people every night causing excessive snoring and sometimes even choking. How serious is sleep apnea? If you’ve ever slept next to someone who snores you will know just how irritating it can be! When we are asleep, our airways relax and start to narrow causing snoring. In people with apnea, the airway can completely close over causing it to become blocked which in turn starves the body of oxygen. Once the brain realises that the body isn’t breathing, it sends a shot of adrenalin to alert the body to wake up. We then take a deep breath (or loud snort) and go back to sleep. The cycle then repeats and can occur several hundred times a night – exhausting!

How do you know if you suffer from it? Some common signs are: • Excessive snoring • A choking sensation or waking with a loud snort • You appear to stop breathing • Frequent night visits to the bathroom • Continual lack of energy • Poor concentration and short term memory Why is it important to do something about it? The quality of your sleep is more important than the quantity. The reason that most people with apnea are always tired is that their body is still fatigued the next morning as a result of poor quality sleep. It’s also important to consider that the health of your partner may also be affected by continually interrupted sleep. Health risks directly linked with apnea include: • Type 2 Diabetes • Heart attack • Stroke • High blood pressure • Dementia

How is it treated? The most effective treatment is with a CPAP or APAP machine which delivers pressurised air through a tube and mask to your face. Don't miss Helen Reddy Show The Events Centre at Caloundra is hosting a series of morning concerts throughout this year as part of their Sunshine Melodies series. The second show for the year is the highly anticipated Nikki Bennett’s Helen Reddy Show on Wednesday, June 29 at 11.00am. As the ‘Queen of 70’s Pop’ Helen Reddy rose to massive international superstardom. With 15 singles in the American top 40 and three #1 hits in the same year, her signature tune, I Am Woman became the feminist anthem of a generation and earned her the honour of becoming the first Australian ever to win a coveted Grammy Award in the USA. During her extraordinary career she starred in Hollywood movies and on the West End, played to sellout houses in Vegas and around the world and was the first Australian to host her very own variety show on an American network television. She helped kick start the careers of both Peter Allan and Olivia Newton John ……. and then she lost it all. In this beautiful one woman show, Nikki Bennett’s performance captures the essence of this amazing artist through her life story, with all of its extraordinary highs and lows. Tickets are $17.00pp with group booking of 10+, $15.50 pp. Complimentary morning tea is available from 10.00am and a post show buffet lunch is available for purchase. Bookings are essential. The Events Centre, 20 Minchinton Street, Caloundra www.theeventscentre.com.au, phone 5491 4240.

Taking care of the future

Good mates at the shed Contributed by Neil Glover Mateship is woven through the fabric of Australian society and cemented in our culture over decades by adversity through wars, droughts and floods. In the last several decades, we have experienced a welcome change of attitude in many areas, resulting in a much more tolerant acceptance of people for whom they are as an individual person. At Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed, we are fortunate to have an eclectic mix of men whose backgrounds cover a diverse range of cultures and experiences. New members are welcomed without prejudice into a group where the individual decides how he would like to participate. Members are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to activities available. Choose from woodturning, metal work, art, welding, leather work and whip making, computer classes, small engine maintenance, or just hangout for a chinwag and a cuppa. With the current expansion of our magnificent Shed, adjacent to our good friends, Glasshouse Country Care on Peachester Road Beerwah, we are building a dedicated games area where the men can enjoy games of Table Tennis, Chess and Bocce or just simply relax with a good book from our library. Any man interested in taking a look at the Shed is welcome to visit on Wednesday mornings. We will be very happy to show him around to see if he would like to become part of our group.

Win Win Win Thanks to the good people at the Event Centre, we have two double passes to be won (worth $34.00). To win, like our Facebook page and share the competition details and comment ‘shared’. Competition will be drawn 4.00pm Monday, June 13 and winners notified via Facebook. Tickets must be collected from the box office at the Events Centre. Facebook.com/glasshousecountrynews.

Aged care that focuses on you When you visit Embracia in Woodford for the first time and walk through the front door, you can be assured that you will be welcomed by a friendly staff member, who is more than willing to assist you with your enquiry. This caring approach by the staff is just one of the elements which creates a very warm and

happy environment for both the residents and their visitors. It transforms it from a residential aged care facility to somewhere that aged people can live and receive the care they deserve. Great efforts are made to create a familiar and homely environment, such as featuring professional photography of local scenery through the complex. Individual shadow boxes are found outside the resident’s rooms for them to display items that are significant or personal to them. Also included are purpose built facilities such as a library, café, hairdressing salon, theatre, chapel and for the gentleman to get some time out, there is even a ‘Men’s Den’. Residents also have the option of an in-room telephone service with a direct-dial phone number and WiFi internet connection so they can stay connected with their loved ones. A splendid feature is the lovely communal areas where the residents can enjoy spending time

with family and friends who come for a visit. One such area is the well-appointed family dining room, which is perfect for special events and celebrations. However, the best way to appreciate the facilities is to see it for yourself. Phone their friendly staff and book an appointment to have a tour – you will definitely be impressed.

Embracia in Woodford

Daphne Chase, Resident We use to drive around Woodford all the time and I pointed out to my daughters … “This will be my new home!” So now I am here, I feel very lucky I am enjoying all the activities and the food is beautiful – 10/10. All the staff are really great and support me in every way. I am really enjoying life here. There is a freedom … not being frightened of falling nor worrying about my health.

Embracia in Woodford, I am glad to call my new home! Keitha Viney, Wife of resident Richard Viney – Jinabara Memory Support Community I heard that Embracia were building a new home at Woodford which would have a smaller number of residents residing in the Memory Support Community. So I decided there and then that Rick, my husband, should move to Embracia in Woodford. I am really happy with the situation here, it is warm and friendly and the staff are very conscientious. Every time I am here the staff are interacting with all the residents and my husband is contented.

I have also recommended this home to others

There’s no excuse for elder abuse

A new campaign has recently been launched to target the growing issue of elder abuse. Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke said. There’s no excuse for elder abuse’ has been created to generate awareness around this unacceptable behaviour and ways it could be addressed. “Sadly, older people can be vulnerable to abuse, with more than 1,350 new elder abuse notifications in Queensland in 2015 – up from around 1,280 in the previous year. “The increase in reported incidents of abuse shows that more people are coming forward, but we know many cases go unreported. “Research shows many cases have been committed by a family member, with the most common offences being physical or emotional intimidation, financial abuse such as bank skimming, and transfer of assets. “This campaign makes it absolutely clear there is never an excuse for elder abuse, by highlighting the types of excuses perpetrators commonly use and what actions the community can take to prevent it. “It was developed after a key recommendation from the landmark ‘Not Now, Now Ever’ report highlighted the growing need for government to step up the fight against elder abuse,” she said. “Throughout June, this important campaign will be promoted in shopping centres, licensed venues and medical centres, on buses, and via digital and social media advertising – to ensure everyone sees the message.

“Older people are valuable members of our communities, and our government will not tolerate any form of elder abuse.” Seniors services, non-government organisations, councils, libraries, hospitals and more, will receive posters and helpcards to raise awareness of elder abuse among their clients and connect them to the range of supports and services across the state. Police Minister Bill Byrne said he welcomes the appointment of A/Senior Sergeant Kerry McKay, who has been selected as the Elder Abuse Project Officer attached to Queensland Police’s Domestic, Family Violence and Vulnerable Persons Unit. “A/Senior Sergeant McKay will work with partner agencies including the government-funded Elder Abuse Prevention Unit to promote initiatives to address elder abuse in the community. “Through our new campaign, and a dedicated police officer, we will help work together to make sure older people in our communities are less susceptible to elder abuse.” Les Jackson, coordinator of the Queensland Government-funded UnitingCare Community Elder Abuse Prevention Unit said older Queenslanders deserve the right to live without fear of being abused financially, physically, psychologically, sexually or by neglect. “People who are concerned that an elderly person is being abused and in need of assistance, can call the Elder Abuse helpline on 1300 651 192.”

New dental prosthetist in town Brian Stuart-Nairne is your dental prosthetist at Beerwah. A Hinterland local, he and his family have lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 40 years. Highly experienced, Brian has been practising dental prosthetics on the Coast for over 35 years and is a qualified BPS provider which is the most advanced denture system available today. He also brings over 30 years experience in implant dentistry to the practice. Interestingly, people may not be aware that dentures have been made in various forms for many thousands of years. Today’s dentures have evolved into a successful dental device for replacing missing teeth. Dentures are vastly improved from their early cousins and today we have new state of the art techniques for impression taking, new materials for denture construction and recently discovered chewing patterns that, when applied to denture construction, gives better function and comfort for full denture wearers. The Beerwah Denture Clinic provides the latest, most advanced dentures available today. They also provide both metal and plastic partial dentures including hidden clasps, mouthguards, relines and fast repairs. For client convenience, they can offer relines in half a day and one hour repairs if required. Some full dentures, especially full lower dentures, may cause great discomfort and very poor chewing ability due to bone loss over time. This bone loss results in severe denture instability and poor function and increasing discomfort. The solution is to place two implants and retainers and the denture clips to these. The denture can still be removed for cleaning but is reassuringly stable during daily function. This economical implant process is a relatively painless procedure and can be performed in Beerwah to provide vastly improved comfort and function for the denture wearer. For those wanting to say goodbye to removable dentures—fully fixed appliances are available. Brian is part of an experienced team that can

Isobelle Payton and Dental Prosthetist Brian Stuart-Nairne offer fixed implant retained appliances that can do away with dentures completely! This option usually suits those who have suffered advanced bone loss, find wearing a denture difficult to tolerate or just want want to get rid of their dentures forever. An additional advantage is that it also leaves the roof of the mouth uncovered to allow feeling temperature and sensing taste better. Their new clinic at Beerwah is fitted with the latest equipment and an in-house dental laboratory to provide you with the best available dental care in the shortest possible time. They can repair broken dentures in one hour and reline dentures in only half a day. They are a provider to DVA, private health funds and conveniently offer Hicaps for immediate refund on health fund rebates. With easy car parking available in front and behind, the new clinic is located at 74 Simpson Street, Beerwah, next to the Aldi carpark. Appointments can be made with Isobelle on 5439 0388 or just drop in next time you’re in town.

Glasshouse Senior Citz need you!

Taking care of the future

Special day for Maleny Seniors

By Sonia Clark

Contributed by Lynda Burgess

Glasshouse Senior Citz club is looking for new members to be part of their social group. The group currently has 40 members from the Glass House, Beerwah and surrounding areas but would love more ‘senior citizens’ to be involved. The group meet on the second Tuesday of every month at the Beerwah Community Hall (next door to the Beerwah Library from 9.00am until 11.00am and membership is open to anyone from the area who is over 60. The next meeting is on Tuesday, June 14 and they would love to encourage others to come along on the day and see what the group can offer. According to one of the original members Dorothy Forster (who joined as a sprightly 60 something year old), the club was started around 32 years ago. Originally meetings were held at the old community hall on Simpson Street with membership around the 100 mark. The majority of current members are aged between their mid 70’s to 80’s, and the club is a great way to meet others in the community and get involved in social activities. The club regularly invites guest speakers to their meetings and past speakers have included talks from the local police and an informative session from the local zoo. Another highlight is that the club organise regular visits to other Senior Citz clubs on the coast which is always an enjoyable day out for members. The monthly meetings are $2.00 to attend and annual membership is only $5.00. As well as an opportunity to meet other seniors in your area, the monthly meetings feature a lucky door prize and informal stalls where the members sell used clothing, cakes and plants. To find out more, please contact Marie on 5496 9260 or Betty on 5438 7951.

Recently the Maleny Seniors group held their annual Cancer Fundraiser. The members chose lung cancer research as their beneficiary this year. Grace Cowan, one of our older Life Members, brought along a small selection of her wonderful teapot collection. Members were excited to see some of Grace’s treasures. Morning tea was a delightful array of homemade goodies provided by the members and following the meeting, everyone sat down to a Sausage Sizzle, with a varied array of sausages kindly donated by Paul Preston of Saintsational Sausages. A total of $1,311.40 was raised throughout the morning and this will be presented to Lung Foundation Australia at our next meeting in June. At the last meeting, there was a raffle for the chance to win one or two hand knitted rugs donated by member Glenda Porter. The lucky winners were Florence Woods of Maleny and Liz Maw of Landsborough. The Maleny Senior Citizens meet weekly on Wednesdays for Indoor Bowls commencing at 9.00am, Friday’s at 9.00am for drop-in for coffee and a chat, and they also enjoy board games. Busy Needles group meet every second Thursday with the next get together on June 16. General Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month with a June guest speaker from Lung Foundation Queensland and the Maleny Hospital’s Navigator Nurse in attendance. All activities of the Seniors are held in the Verandah Room at the Maleny Community Centre.

Hawaiian barefoot bowls Club Glasshouse felt very tropical last Sunday as dozens of people flocked to the green to support the Beerwah Kindergarten. Club Glasshouse member Bill Tumbridge provided some last-minute coaching for those new to the barefoot bowls experience. A full field of 80 people were bowled away as friendly competitiveness, coupled with a truly tropically-weathered afternoon, made for an unforgettable event. Raffle prizes were in abundance and the lunchtime snags were cooked to perfection. More than $1300.00 was raised from the inaugural event. Beerwah Kindy fundraising coordinator Carrie Burnett said the event would not have been possible without the support of Club Glasshouse and other sponsors including Glasshouse Country Meats, Top Shots, Beefy’s, Aussie World, Caloundra Rollerdrome, Auscare Pharmacy Glasshouse and Fullerton Farms.

Winter is finally here, so why not take advantage of the cooler weather to experience Christmas in July at King Ludwig's German Restaurant and Bar? Set in a gorgeous mountainside chalet on the Mary Cairncross Scenic Drive, and with the most amazing views of the Glasshouse Mountains, Barbara, Klaus and their team have been working hard to bring a traditional European Christmas experience to the Hinterland. Their Christmas in July celebrations run on all five Saturday evenings in July. With hot mulled wine, great food, traditional entertainment such as bell-ringing, accordions, slap-dancing and even a visit from Santa (if you've been good!). King Ludwig's celebrations offer much more than just some bon-bons and a Christmas tree. In fact, all that is missing is the snow-capping on the mountain peaks. For a special family experience, they are also offering Christmas in July family luncheons on July 2 and 3. Bookings are essential, as some dates are already filling up. To book your own special Christmas in July, phone 5499 9377. While you are there, make sure to book in for their upcoming Oktoberfest celebrations running on all five Saturdays in October. Living - History Mary Ferris – Lady of many talents

The Bankfoot House Collection contains many documents and items to support the premise that Mary Isabella Ferris (nee Burgess) was a lady of diverse skills and talent. Rearing five children during the Great Depression (1930s) and living on a remote property at Cooloolabin near Yandina, Mary had plenty of opportunities to practise the skills she had acquired growing up in a family that produced most of its own provisions and recycled as a way of life. Mary became a skilled dressmaker. The treadle sewing machine she received as a wedding present from her parents in 1925 proved to be a valuable asset throughout her life. During the Depression, one of the ways she helped the family survive was by making the children’s clothes and sewing for others. She made coats and other clothing items out of calico flour bags. A 50 pound flour bag would yield about a yard (less than a metre) of fabric. Mary’s niece, Ethel Burgess, recalls how her Aunty Mary always made clothes for herself and her mother Clementina, shirts for her youngest son Kevin and countless dark grey flannel shirts

for husband Jack. Most of her dressmaking was for the family. Is it any wonder that her youngest daughter Edith became a Home Economics teacher? When husband Jack returned to timber getting after his war service, he was obliged to live away from home during the week. Mary decided to enrol in a Modern Advanced Dresscutting course conducted by 'Modern Designers' Private Academy of Dressmaking. She passed this course with a Special Certificate of Merit, First Class. With this qualification, she was admitted into The Qualified Dressmaker’s Association on 20 September 1946. “Being thoroughly trained in all Branches of the Dressmaking Trade and holding a First Class Certificate of Merit, she is fully qualified to practice as a Dressmaker.” Mary’s original qualification Certificates remain part of the Bankfoot House document collection.

Historic ‘Glenferna’ moves to new home

By Sonia Clark Through the tireless efforts of the Maleny Historical Society and the generosity of public donations and government grants, the historic building Glenferna has been relocated to the Maleny Historical Village. The house was gifted to the society by the current owners of the property Brian and Leone McFarlane, and in the early hours of the morning of May 26, the nearly 113 year old historical home was safely relocated from 1010 Maleny Landsborough road to its new home on Bryce Lane. The farmhouse was built in 1903 by Edward Thynne (son of prominent solicitor and politician Andrew Thynne) from land that was purchased from the original selection owned by Isaac Burgess. Those familiar with Maleny history would recognise the Thynne family name; Edward was brother to the Thynne sisters who bequeathed the land that was used for the site of Mary Cairncross Park. In 1904 Edward registered the building to become a Receiving Office for mail for the surrounding area and it was used in this capacity until 1912. The property was then sold and served as the family home to a number of families until 1976 when it was offered as a Mater Art Union Prize Farm. The winner of the home kept the property for almost 40 years and in 2012 it was sold to Brian and

Leone McFarlane. While the new owners had no use for the house, they realised it had historical value, but were unsure of its origins. In 2014 Desley Malone from the Maleny Historical Society decided to investigate the history of this well loved home. Desley managed to trace back the history of the home using records from the Lands Department at Nambour. After Ted Thynne sold the farm in 1912, it was bought by A Beacom, then in 1915 by Arthur and Mary Cork and it was their family home with their 11 children for 34 years. It then had several owners until 1976. Realising its great historical significance, the historical society got behind a campaign to relocate and restore the home. The current owners were willing for the home to be relocated to the Maleny Historical Village under the provision that it be restored. The Maleny School Centenary in 2013 highlighted the abundance of historic local school memorabilia of small schools throughout the district that had

shut down over the years. The historical society wanted a building that could be used to display this memorabilia along with historic Post Office artefacts. The plans currently underway are to restore the building to its former glory and use the newly repositioned Glenferna as a School and Post Office Museum. Glenferna now sits alongside two other homes from the same era and will be preserved for future generations to enjoy. If you would like to find out more about Glenferna and the Maleny Historical Society see www.historicalsocietymaleny.com or like their Facebook page. The Maleny Historical Village is located at 7 Bryce Lane, Maleny. www.gcnews.com.au

Fr. Harry Reuss - Anglican Parish of Maleny

Leadership is a hot topic at the moment as we rush towards a general election. In our modern world, the media have a huge part to play in influencing public opinion. The hype surrounding the leadership debates has made me realise how the power of personality, almost to the exclusion of policy, has become so important in our modern world. Generally speaking, we no longer want to be given a long verbatim account full of detail, preferring instead to rely on sound-bites to inform us and to help us to make judgments about who or what we support. Whatever the final outcome of the election, the personalities of the party leaders will play a crucial part in helping us to decide as a nation who we are going to put our trust in to lead this country, for the next three years. If one were to analyse Jesus’ style of leadership, he certainly wouldn’t fit any of the current political models. One of the ways in which Jesus described himself was as ‘the good shepherd’ – not necessarily the people who spring to GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM mind when we talk about leaders. and their sheep occur throughout the Bible. King David was a shepherd and the popularity of Psalm 23 tells us that, at times, we all need the reassurance offered in the image of God’s rod and staff providing us with comfort when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Following the resurrection, after breakfast on the shore when Jesus commissions Peter – always portrayed as the leader of the group of disciples – to be leader in a much, greater sense, he uses the words ‘tend my flock’ and ‘feed my sheep’. But it’s a wider commission than just Peter. We are called too, to shepherd one another, as we travel towards God’s kingdom. Each of us has a leadership role to fulfil in terms of the encouragement we give to our fellow Christians and in the example we set to the wider world. By showing those around us that Christ is central to our lives we place ourselves under public scrutiny. Our own sound-bites will be listened to, analysed and others will form their own opinions from what they see and hear in us. ‘I am the good shepherd’ said Jesus. ‘The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep’. What greater example of leadership can there be for us to follow.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery

Plant of the Week

Native Rhododendron Rhododendron lochae Native Rhododendrons are beautiful and easily grown plants. In the wild they are only found on the high rainforest clad peaks of Far North Queensland growing as epiphytes on trees and rocks. In a garden situation it’s best to grow them in a large pot or hanging basket. They are best kept in a semi shaded position protected from warm westerly winds. They love to stay cool and moist but must have good drainage. Cutting grown plants flower early and have magnificent deep red to pink flowers. They will grow to around 1.5m in time. An annual prune and fertilise will keep this long lived slow growing plant looking great all year round. A must for any native plant enthusiast. If you would like to find out more about some of Australia’s most amazing flora and the fauna they attract then drop in and see the team at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Sport Biggest competition on the calendar Fighters from the San Training Centre Taekwondo Team competed in the Gold Coast open last weekend. It’s one of the biggest competitions on the Australian calendar and was attended by 500 fighters with every state represented, and international teams from PNG and New Zealand including four fighters who will be attending the Rio Olympics. The team of eight fighters came home with six gold and one bronze medal, an amazing result for a high level event. The girls shined in their matches with Emma Hall winning gold in the under 12 Blue belt division six - nil and Siena Cameron having two convincing wins including one match against an interstate competitor to claim gold in the red belt cadet division. Jodi Chapman had two tough fights to win the blue belt masters division beating a competitor from Victoria and also a competitor from New South Wales. Senior black belt Kasia Bartnikoska contested the open black belt division but suffered a close loss in the first round losing by one point and struggling to deal with jet lag and a broken thumb during the fight. In the Men’s, Aaron Lerch finished with a bronze in the under 55kg Junior Red Belt division, losing to a strong competitor from New Zealand. Ruben Tidy showed great control and tactics to beat a competitor from New South Wales landing

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails, Wallabies, Wildcats and Whistlers were all rained out. Good news is the Whistlers are through to the Friday finals series where they’ll meet Mooloolaba Legends in a knock out match. Sunday, June 5 saw Witta Wompoos go down fighting against a very tenacious Tewantin team. After a successful display of tennis from our number one and two mixed combinations of Bob and Paula and Anthony and Liz, the side succumbed to the blizzard conditions, battling through some torrid men’s doubles games. The ladies doubles put the match into perspective and it was then all a matter of good luck in the challenging conditions. We battled on only losing by eight games. Well fought team, winter has arrived, but hopefully we will be spared the blustery conditions on our next outing. Like the old song (almost) goes: ‘The veterans of Witta drove through the storm, with their Wiking heads up high, and we would not be afraid of the Ballinger Rockets. At the end of the match, there were two courts, 12 players and still no rain. With the sweet silver song of a win, we played on through the wind. We played on through the rain. Even though our serves be tossed and blown. With hope in our hearts. We never played alone...’ But, if you’re Kev, you may play alone next match. A bit like ‘Carousel’, the match was on a knife edge. Well done to Ballinger for edging us out, great tennis. Thanks to Gerry for the words and the team, always fun, always one that got away, always next time. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au. 54

several spinning kick techniques to the head to claim gold in the Junior Red Belt under 63kg division. Joey Mortimer fought a tough battle in the under 12 blue belt division with no scores registered in the first three rounds. The fight went to sudden death overtime which still produced no result, but Joey was awarded the gold medal after he was voted to be more dominant by the judges. Cameron Taylor won gold in the senior heavyweight division beating a Victorian and then a local rival in a close final. Coaches are happy to see students progressing though from our junior programs which students as young as three train to our elite level high performance classes, and strength and conditioning programs, each with a particular focus in elements that are important to students at that time. It’s also great to see so much support from the rest of the club which has over 100 members.

Prizes for the day were drawn out

of a hat. Winners were Christine Dougan, Mac Townson, Allan Pashby and Brian Saunders. Due to the bad weather on Saturday, the Police Bowls Day and coaching were cancelled for the Sunday. The next Police Bowls Day will be held Sunday, August 7. Our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival will be held Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16. Nomination forms are available at our bowls office, $55.00 per person, includes green fees and lunch for both days. Should be a great weekend! For more information, contact David on 0405 101 448. Winner on the day was Greg ChildeFreeman with 68 nett, runner-up was Perry Garcia with 69 nett and third place went to

Noah Childe-Freeman on a count-back from Max Whitten, both with 71 nett. At this point, we would like to thank most sincerely the Rickaby family, who donated the fabulous trophy for this Inaugural Championship which was in honour of Ron Rickaby, Nan’s Seafood Cafe who donated three meals to the value of $40.00 each, Drummond Golf, who donated several vouchers to be spent in their shop, Maleny Botannical Gardens for their vouchers, and Maleny Property Rentals who sponsor our Monthly Medal competition each month. Without sponsors like these, our competitions would not be as special for the winners. Tuesday May 31: The Maleny Golf Club held an 18 Hole Single Stableford Competition and the winner was Dennis Brown on a count-back from Chris Pottinger and John Tytherleigh all with 35 points. Nearest to the Pin went to John Tytherleigh on the third hole. Unfortunately, mother nature then came in, bringing welcome rain but washing out our competitions. www.gcnews.com.au

Sport It’s footy fever at Peachester Peachester students are building their rugby league skills just in time for State of Origin season. Peachester’s Sports Teacher, Mr McKie has invited representatives from the NRL’s (National Rugby League) Mini-Mod Coaching program to teach the students in all grades some of the many ball handling and movement skills associated with playing the game. This will be taught during the children’s scheduled sports sessions. We welcome Steve Belsham, Glen Dieger and Elaina to the school for the next three weeks. The students will love seeing the skills they learnt being demonstrated by the best during this year’s State of Origin series and replicating their new slick moves in the playground. Earlier in the year students could elect to participate in the AFL Auskick program during

Weetbix Kids TRYathalon Contributed by Una Robinson

On Sunday, May 29, Beerwah State School student Tom Robbins was one of the determined kids who completed in the Sunshine Coast Weetbix Kids TRYathalon. Tom, who suffers with Cerebral Palsy, completed his 60 metres swim in his age group, then the three kilometres of cycling with his hand operated three wheeler cycle and finally some 500 metres of the walk/ run section being assisted with the use of a walker. Congratulations to Tom for his efforts, because he had to work much harder than the more able bodied kids to achieve these results.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Red light violation A motorcycle police officer stops a driver for shooting through a red light. The driver is angry as he steps out of his car and comes striding toward the officer, demanding to know why he is being harassed, so the officer calmly tells him. The motorist instantly goes on a tirade of abuse. When the officer finished writing the ticket, he puts an ‘AH’ in the lower right corner of the ticket. When the driver is presented with his copy he points to the ‘AH’ and demands to know what it stands for. The officer says, "that's so when we go to court, I'll remember that you're an A*se Hole!" Two months later they're in court. The 'violator' has

a bad driving record with a high number of points and is in danger of losing his licence, so he hired a big gun lawyer to represent him. On the stand, the officer testifies to seeing the man run through the red light. Under cross examination the defence attorney asks, "Officer is this the ticket that you issued to my client?" The Officer responds, "yes, sir it is. Lawyer: "Officer, what does the ‘AH’ in the lower right corner of the ticket stand for? "Aggressive and Hostile, Sir." "Aggressive and Hostile?" "Yes Sir.” “Officer, are you sure it doesn't stand for A*se Hole?" Well, sir, you know your client better than I do.” Hugh Jones, Beerwah

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 A Moon and Neptune aspect on Thursday builds up into one that warns you to be careful. And so do not misread signals. No need to be shy about stating your opinions. You should know that someone could push back hard. Heated exchanges are always difficult, however if willing to learn, just laugh and shake hands! CANCER June 22 – July 22 The planet Uranus is always exciting, and in its position to the planets Venus and Mercury, it should optimise easy going and fun connections with interesting activities. Your inner artist coming out and is especially good for you midmonth. Be decisive, not defensive, when you take action and you will spark public popularity. LEO July 23 – August 22 This is the weekend of the approaching quarter Moon, which warns against mixing friends with money woes. A good suggestion is neither a borrower or a lender be. However, this weekend you have a lot of fun with friends or relatives, whether you go on an outing or spontaneously play with your children in a local park. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Maybe you have just had a couple of days of sluggish trends. With Mercury entering the sign of Gemini you will see your focus on new business plans and new agendas. With Neptune going to retrograde in Pisces this will dilute your focus, so keep to your gut feelings as some close friends will be hard to understand now.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There is a little bit of difficulty tending to the outside world of responsibilities. Sometimes you feel that life is moving on shifting sands without a strong foundation. Be aware that you have to work through one adjustment after another to adapt to current trends. You play a big part in the life of others now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 If you can’t avoid or escape life and all it requires, don’t worry, the way is not clear for a couple of months. So stay cool, calm and collected. The obstacles or delays are caused by planets restructuring the lives of others. Look for unconventional new ways to navigate this maze of mirrors under the current planets. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Well last week the planet Jupiter packed in a lot of Gemini New Moon emotional challenges. This week that planet makes various aspects to the Sun, Venus and Mercury, so come mid-month a whole new shift in thinking will take place. A taxation, or credit matter, could require some very fast attention. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With money and security always being important to you, you may not be in the mood to deal with practical urgencies and may want to make a run for it! Yes, would it not be nice to escape problems, especially if the bank / business partner says things you would rather not hear. However, you are productive.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The planets Jupiter and Neptune are strongly felt by you under an opposition between Venus and the Sun. It is time to read a good book or do a study course. Balances needed for your physical body with mental exercise. Combine your high-level enthusiasm with a moderate course of walking through a flowering parkland. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 If you are having any road blocks, or obstacles, then you need the help of a more authorative person. This person may handle the revised idea, plan or presentation that you have and give it the birth out of the ashes. So finalise all the details necessary and put all the loose ends together to reach a strong closure. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Someone may be demanding more time and affection. It is something that you may not possibly give easily as you focus is on other responsibilities. Neptune begins to reverse backwards and you would do better to relay on adaptability, rather than creating more resistance. Restrain any loud voice arguments. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Your goal this week Capricorn, should you decide to accept it, is a reworking of your health and work routines. As Mars is still in retrograde motion, and now Neptune begins also its backwards movement, you will feel your life in some sort of drama. To avoid playing it out drama be very adaptable.
