I generally try to choose a topic for my column which is something that I know something about, however this week I am throwing caution to the wind and I'm going to write about rugby league! Well, actually that might be a stretch too far, more like what it is like to be one of the Footy Tipping Wives and Girlfriends, known as Wags. This year, Brownie was really keen to introduce the ‘Pip the Pollie’ Footy Tipping Competition, and as a result there has been much more discussion in our household each weekend about who Brownie has tipped. Sadly, as the season continued it did start to seem like Brownie may be the only contestant who wouldn’t actually ‘Pip the Pollie’ and no, this wasn’t a tactic to make our local Pollie feel good! So, I felt it was definitely time to let you all know that after 22 rounds Brownie has finally done it – yes ironically the organiser of the competition had taken all season to receive his star and he is the last entrant to achieve it. And what makes me smile is that I know for a fact one of the other tippers (I won’t name names, let’s just call them code name Reader Anne) makes their selections based on the alphabetical order of the team names! And surprisingly, she has pipped the pollie twice this season – so while players' wives have to deal with the injury count, in our house the wife has just had to deal with the anxiety of Regards, getting the tipping right!

By Lea Parkes

There will be plenty of love for Landsborough in the air on Saturday August 19 when groups from across the town will unite in celebration with lots of familyfriendly activities from 9am until 5pm. The lovely ladies on our front cover have been doing some serious planning, and getting their outfits ready to dress up in 1960s gear to participate in the retro fashion parade outside the Landsborough Museum at 1pm and then on to the High Tea with a twist in the hall from 2pm. Local businesses Eclectic Dreams and RAHD Hair and Beauty will provide the prizes for the best retro and best and creative outfit categories at the parade. Between 8am and 1pm the Landsborough Hall Markets will be on, but you can expect some extra stalls as well as their creative Beanie and Tea Cosy Exhibition (on display at the hall from Monday, August 14). From 9am to 3pm the Seventh-day Adventist Church will host a range of activities, including ‘live’ vegetarian cooking demonstrations, every half hour from 9.30 until 2.30pm, highlighting local produce with a local chef. They will also have an Art Exhibition featuring work of students from Landsborough State School and KinderMarlee Childcare Centre, as well as free health age and lifestyle assessments, and gospel music. From 9.30am to 2.30pm there will be a Kids Zone in the CWA Park opposite Landsborough Hall, with free Kids Old Skool Games and Art Activities organised by the Landsborough Scouts, KinderMarlee and the Caloundra Community Centre Family Support Team. And the Twinnies will also be

in the zone from 11am to 2pm. From 10am to 3pm there will be free live music at three Busking Zones. Throughout the whole day you can also take a Landsborough’s Heritage Places walking tour. Pick up a map of the tour which will be available from the Landsborough Museum, Seventh-day Adventist Church, event headquarters at the CWA Hall, 3 Divas cafe, The Steaming Cup or Henry's Cafe. The Landsborough Museum will be open for visits including a sneak peek at the new work in progress, ‘Newsmakers – 50 years of Sunshine Coast Newspaper Headlines' exhibition. Entry is at a special price of only a gold coin donation. If you are feeling hungry you can also enjoy a tasty sausage sizzle from the dedicated Landsborough School P&C outside Landsborough Museum. The only event that requires pre booking is the High Tea with a 60s twist. Tickets are $10, please phone Linda on 0413 009 840 or email landsboroughhall@gmail.com.

Recently GC&M News was contacted by Beerwah resident Eddie Smith who wanted to share his family being able to enjoy having five generations of family members together to mark family milestones. With his in-laws Robert (Bob) and Barbara Williams visiting from Cheshire in the UK, the family came together to celebrate a number of milestones. On July 12, 1952, Robert and Barbara Williams could have had little idea that their wedding that day in Warrington, England, would lead to a visit to the Sunshine Coast sixty five years later to meet their great, great grandson Jasper. Arriving in June, they were able to attend their granddaughter Victoria’s birthday celebrations and they also met the other sixteen members of their growing Australian family. In a busy two months they have attended their great granddaughter’s wedding, as well as quietly

marking their own sixty fifth wedding anniversary; and as if this wasn’t enough, Barbara celebrated her own 83rd birthday! Eddie met Bob and Barbara originally in Zambia when he was doing aid work. He discovered that they had two daughters who were away at school and eventually he met one of those daughters, Sue. They fell in love and have been married for the past 43 years. He and Sue lived in Botswana for 20 years where their two daughters, Victoria and Alison, were born. Eddie and Sue moved out to Landsborough from the UK 12 years ago to be closer to family, as Victoria married an Aussie and Alison married a Kiwi. And while the trip gave Bob and Barbara a chance to catch up with their extended family, it was the lure of meeting their 16-month-old great grandson Jasper that was the icing on the cake for them!

Following on from the success of the first challenge and responding to demand, JAG Fitness and Pilates are taking bookings for the next buzz – a Four Week Kick Start Plan. Owner Gail is passionate about helping people reach their health and fitness goals in a safe, professional and private setting. It’s important to ask yourself ... what are you doing to reach your goals? Get that positive mind set and focus on your purpose. Make time for you, and take action now! “I have nearly completed my first four weeks with Gail at JAG. Originally I was looking for something for a bit of exercise. However Gail has made me realise that I can be even fitter, more flexible and stronger with her program. Each session is a real workout and Gail encourages me to work past my comfort zone. At times I had doubted myself with some of the equipment, but Gail would help me to work through these doubts and ensure that I feel proud of what I have achieved. “I believe it is important as we get older to keep working on our fitness, flexibility and strength to ensure we get the best out of life. I am loving the results and will continue my sessions at JAG.” Dianne, Glass House Mountains

NBN towers explained Continuing in our series where we look at the recent NBN wireless broadband tower development proposals, this week we review 127 Appaloosa Drive, Conondale and 75 Link Road, Glass House Mountains.

NBN Tower – 127 Appaloosa Drive, Conondale (MCU17/2006) The proposal is for a 40m monopole tower with one parabolic dish antenna and three panel antennas attached to provide fixed wireless broadband to more than 180 properties in and around Conondale township. The area has been rated as having an availability rating of ‘D’ for existing ADSL broadband services, with the town area rated as ‘B’ for quality and rural properties experiencing ‘E’ for quality, with a median speed of 5.4Mbps (Maleny township averages 23.53Mbps). The wireless coverage from the tower will extend about 5km northeast along MalenyKenilworth Road, 4km north past Cookes Road, more than 4km northeast past Grundon Road, and about 2.5km southeast past Aherns Road. The tower is a transmission end site within the fixed wireless network, providing only a service to the local community. The tower will transmit data straight back to constructed co-located facility at Witta North, and then on to the proposed fibre Hub at rural Maleny (referred to as ‘Maleny East’).

A total of 13 possible locations were investigated, with only one landholder (Appaloosa Drive) expressing any interest in hosting a tower. The siting of the tower is approximately 190m from the nearest residential house and is set back 550m from the Appaloosa Drive road frontage. The application documents deem that the proposal is compliant with all the relevant planning scheme codes and provides an important community benefit, and as such should be approved by Sunshine Coast Council.

NBN Tower – 75 Link Road, Glass House Mountains (MCU17/2004) The proposal is for a 50m monopole tower with one parabolic dish antenna and three panel antennas attached to provide fixed wireless broadband to more than 200 properties in and around eastern Glass House outskirts. The service area extends from the tower location about 3km southeast past the Bruce Highway, almost 2km northwest past Scotts Road, and 2km north past Sand Road. The current Telstra exchanges servicing this community provide only a ‘D’ or ‘E’ rating for ADSL quality, and with median speeds ranging from 3.46Mbps to 12.12Mbps. This service is substantially slower than median broadband ADSL speeds experienced in the major Hinterland towns across the Sunshine Coast (22.69Mbps).

This proposal works in conjunction with the approved Beerwah facility and proposed Beerburrum tower, and abuts the fixed line service area along Steve Irwin Way delivering services to the dense residential areas of Glass House Mountains. Three sites were investigated, with only the Link Road site being rated as suitable. The closest dwelling is the property house being less than 50m from the tower and the neighbouring house 110m to the south of the tower, with settled residential areas being 740m at the closest. The application documents deem that the proposal is compliant with all the relevant planning scheme codes and provides an important community benefit, and as such should be approved by Sunshine Coast Council.

Student Leader Investiture Beerwah State High School changes over student leadership mid-year to allow the Year 12 students who have held leadership positions since they were half-way through Year 11 the opportunity to focus on their studies during their final semester at school. On Friday July 21, a new group of Leaders from Year 11 and Year 8 took their oaths for the leadership positions they will hold until this time next year. The school concert band played the national anthem and two performance pieces and the outgoing student leaders received a small gift from the school to say thank you for their service to the school. The new leaders were able to share a morning tea (expertly prepared by the Year 11 Hospitality classes) with their invited guests at the end of the Investiture Ceremony. School Captains for 2017/18 are Rose Mickelson and Ruth Finneran, Vice Captains are Aiden Goldsborough and Veda Pflasterer and the Junior School Captains are Shanae Bryant and Breanna Whitwam and Vice Captains Trinity Gibson and Brooke Ferguson. Making up the rest of the schools leadership team are the Student Council Representatives: President Ruth Finneran, Vice President Rose Mickelson, Secretary Veda Pflasterer, and Treasurer Aidan Goldsborough; Junior School Council Representatives: President Matthew

Environmental group reaches award finals DENTURE CLINIC Steve Irwin Way Forest Group, who successfully lobbied for the protection of large tracts of forest at Glenview, has been recognised as a finalist in the prestigious Healthy Land and Water Awards. As one of three finalists vying for the Community Stewardship Award, the group has been recognised for their tireless work to protect sections of critically endangered habitat and subtropical lowland rainforest found in the Mooloolah section of the Beerwah State Forest. The Beerwah State Forest was under threat from a proposed road interchange and motorcycle facility. These developments would have cleared 100 hectares of important habitat and severely damaged the rest of the 600-hectare section of forest. Thanks to the efforts of Save Steve Irwin Way Forest Group and their partners, the area to be cleared was reduced to less than six hectares, while a further 744 hectares of forest was transitioned to national park for permanent protection. Group spokesperson Carolita Fuentes recognised that collaboration was the key. “We would like to thank everyone, with special mention to the Traditional Custodians, who have played a part in saving Steve Irwin Way forest, now named Mooloolah River National Park Meridan Section,” she said. Other environmental defence groups involved included the Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Koala Crusaders, Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Group and members of the public.

The group is still working with the Department of Transport and Main Roads on wildlife movement structures, under/overpasses, offset areas, as well as securing some of the timber from old growth ‘Guardian Trees’ for a memorial to the ancient trees felled to make way for the new road interchange. “We are in discussions regarding the creation of a memorial/cultural heritage/educational structure or structures across the road at the Jowarra Park rest area,” explained Carolita. “It has been an amazing journey for all involved with successful environmental outcomes as well as sadness and grief over not being able to save the entire area of forest. “We look forward to many further successes as a group in our determination to be a voice for the local environment, in collaboration with other community groups and environmental defenders.” A People’s Choice Award is presented to the finalist who garners the most community votes. Voting can be made via the Healthy Land and Water website: www.hlw.org.au/awards.

Contributed by Di Hobson In July each year many overseas students make the journey to Australia and stay for four weeks with the International Lions Youth Exchange Program. The students are sponsored by a Lions Club in their home town. The students spend three weeks with host families before spending the last week at one of four Youth Camps, with some choosing to only stay with the host family. The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range members Rob and Diane Hobson hosted two 17-year-old students this year, Eliana from Sicily and Saara from Finland and for two weeks (pictured). The first week their host was Desley from Brisbane (Brisbane Bunya Lions Club) and from the moment they met at Brisbane airport Saara and Eliana became close friends. During their stay in Maleny, Eliana and Saara attended the Lions Club meetings and exchanged club bannerettes. They particularly enjoyed visits to the beaches on the Sunshine Coast, including Rainbow Beach and fell in love with Noosa and the National Park. Their last day was spent at the Maleny State High School and was extremely helpful with a barbeque at the school raising funds for the Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation. In the evening they attended a dinner at the Mapleton Bowls Club and danced to Rob’s group ‘Ray and the Sunshines’ (see photo). Eliana and Saara spent their last week at Camp Krokodile in Currimundi with 42 other exchange students. Whilst at camp the students enjoy many recreational activities and a visit to

Weeds are a Sign Your Soil Maybe Sick

Australia Zoo, Underwater World, Maleny's Mary Cairncross Park and Kondalilla Falls followed by a barbeque lunch provided by Maleny Blackall Range Lions. Saara and Eliana have been great ambassadors for their countries and for their sponsoring Lions Clubs. Lions Clubs in Australia also participate in a Youth Exchange Program and young people between the age of 16 years to 21 years of age can apply for sponsorship through a participating local Lions Club or visit the website for further information at www.lionsclubs.org.au/activities/ youth/ye/about-the-program.

Before you start using chemical herbicides, consider this; Weeds are actually doing an important job and they are a sign that your soil is deficient in some minerals. Different coloured weed flowers means specific minerals are not available, which gives you some clues to fix the underlying problems. When you spray with glyphosate based herbicides, you kill everything in the short term, leaving bare soil. But this only compounds the problem in the long term. Make no mistake, where you have bare soil, weeds will ALWAYS beat out what you want to grow. But there are steps you can take to remedy the problem for the long term. To find out more, BEFORE the weeds take over! Call Scott and Haidee on 5499 4656

Interested in writing, or telling your story?

Contributed by Patty Beecham, from the Beerwah Writers Group I recently interviewed one of the group members and this is what they said: Q: Why do you write? A: I write to release emotion, but also to reach someone, almost like sending a secret message. But now my writing is to mean something to someone to let them know they’re not the only ones struggling. Q: How does writing make you feel when you get the words down? A: Writing makes me feel content. It's automatic, it helps me release pain. Q: What advice would you give someone who wants to write? A: I would say go for it! Type your work on the internet on Tumblr or Wattpad to total strangers. You’ll meet great writers out there that are similar to your writing and who knows, you could meet a friend for life! Just keep writing every day. If you struggle with confidence then just start by writing in a journal and keep it hidden or on your laptop, then slowly show it to someone you trust and work from there. Read others’ writing, whatever you’re into and Tumblr poetry is great! Q: How often do you write? A: I write every day, as soon as I get a good thought or my imagination has a chat with me or when I'm angry or low. If this sounds like you, come along to the Beerwah Writers Group. We are an active group of local amateur and professional writers who meet to discuss aspects of writing and publishing. Established in 2006, by a group of like minded people who wanted to share their experience with writing, the group meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month in the Beerwah Library. Members attending usually donate a gold coin to defray the cost of morning refreshments. New members are welcome and encouraged. A yearly subscription of $5 applies. If you are keen to write but not sure of where to start, please join us at next meeting on August 11, from 10am to noon. Enquiries: Susan 0439 258 047 or email sandrush@bigpond.net.au.

For more information or to register for this fabulous opportunity to prepare your child for Prep in 2018 please phone the office on 5439 5222 or email admin@beerburrss.eq.edu.au or follow us on Facebook www.beerburrss.eq.edu.au

Leanda Talks Is your immune system ready for spring? We tend to think about boosting our immune system when it comes to the winter months, but really it’s important to keep your immune strong at all times. Not to just fight off colds and flu’s but to protect us from all seasonal changes, Leanda Weynton food intolerances, and ND th Naturopa and environmental Yoga Teacher pollutions. The immune system is the body's defence against infectious organisms and other invaders. Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade the body and cause disease, allergies and imbalances. What’s important to understand is when the body is trying to combat an allergic reaction to something (whether it is a skin allergy like eczema or if it is something more complex like a food allergy) it is because something is not right within your body therefore it cannot fight off the allergen by its own defences, hence you get allergy symptoms. Foods and environments are a major factor to allergy responses and can be a daunting process to find out the main culprit. With naturopathic diagnostic tools and testings we can find out quite simply where the problems are.

The best thing is we don’t require you to give blood and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. If you want to know more about our allergy testing options see our website (www.thehealthyguru. com.au/) or pick up a brochure in store. Food really is our medicine; the magic of nutrition and herbs is that we can educate ourselves to eat to be well - like the saying eat to live, not live to eat. The power of what plants can offer really is a massive boost to the immune system, and good quality supplementation can be a huge benefit when needing to address imbalances in the body. Vitamin C will help to lift your vitality by lifting the immune system. Vitamin C can be quickly destroyed by exposure to air and heat, and it remains in the body for only a short time so needs to be replenished every day. Vitamin C will be presented in vegetables and fruits with white pulp. Vitamin C rich foods are broccoli, brussels sprouts, lemon, lime, grapefruit, asparagus, radish, pineapple, leak, avocado, kale, parsley, and all sprouts, just to name a few. Garlic is a natural antibiotic that wards off infections, viruses and even allergies. It has strong properties that are antibacterial, antiseptic, antibiotic, diuretic and stimulant. It is very good for your ears, throat and nose. Garlic will fight off all types of allergies because it boosts your immune system immensely. Add garlic to your food, juice garlic with other vegetables or make it into a hot drink with lemon and some local honey.

POLICE BEAT Road Safety Week August 21 to 25 is Road Safety Week. Each day focuses on a specific road safety issue including; speed, drink and drug driving, driver distraction, seatbelts and child restraints, sharing the road and fatigue. Unfortunately the road toll for this year is already 142 and, of these, 44 were in the Central Region which the Sunshine Coast is part of. This, sadly, is an increase against the same time last year. You will most likely notice an increased police presence on the roads around the Sunshine Coast throughout the week, as Road Safety Week aims to both increase detection and raise awareness of the issues in the community. For more information check the Join the Drive website www.jointhedrive.qld.gov.au. Keep an eye out for the winning entries of the School Road Safety Week Artwork Competition which are due to be displayed on Sunshine Coast Council vehicles. There have been some entries from our local schools so good luck to everyone that has submitted an entry. Neighbourhood Watch – Dogs on Patrol Our local Neighbourhood Watch group meets at Beerwah Library every second month on the first Tuesday at 3pm. They are currently planning for the launch of ‘Dogs on Patrol’ on November 4. Local dog owners watch this space, I’ll have more information for you closer to the date, but make sure you save that date because you won’t want to miss out. Blue Light Dance Party Our next event is on September 8 at Beerwah Community Hall from 6.30pm and is open to all school age children. As usual it is well supervised by both serving police officers and Blue Light volunteers and there are some great lucky door prizes to be won. My Police Keep up to date with what is happening on the coast and around the state by signing up to the myPolice blog. The website contains updates of current incidents and events and CCTV images for potential identification. You can get updates daily to your inbox. Just head onto www.mypolice.qld.gov.au/ sunshinecoast/ and register your email address.

Federal Member for Fisher The Fisher Community Awards We all know those local people who are giving something back – the leaders in our community who inspire us and who set the example for all of us to follow. We have them in our schools, in our businesses and community groups, in our health care providers and our aged care residences. I want our part of the Sunshine Coast to be the place to be for Education, Employment and Retirement. That is why I have set up my new Fisher Community Awards. I want to recognise those individuals and organisations who are leading the way in making that a reality with their contribution to our community. I need your help to find those unsung local people. If you know an individual or an organisation involved in education, employment or retirement who has made a contribution to our community and deserves to win an award, please visit my website, www.andrewwallacemp.com.au, and fill in my awards nomination form. Winners will receive a trophy and a prize at a special awards night in September.

State Member for Glass House Happy 50th Birthday Sunshine Coast Bankfoot House Celebrations On Sunday July 30, Bankfoot House put on quite a spread to celebrate 50 years of the Sunshine Coast being named the ‘Sunshine Coast’ and 50 years since Jack and Mary Ferris took up residence at Bankfoot House. Bankfoot House was established in 1868 as a roadside accommodation house on the new road from Brisbane to the Gympie gold rush and it is the oldest surviving building in the Glasshouse Mountains. It is steeped in family history and was occupied by the Grigor, Burgess and Ferris families in succession and in December 2008 was added to the Queensland Heritage Register. It was great to celebrate with Ron Gillinder, President of the Bankfoot House committee, and his 50-year-old HR Holden.

My winter consultation blitz I believe that to be an effective MP it is vital to get out into the community and ask local people what issues are important to them, face to face. This month was my latest consultation blitz, the third this year, with six Listening Posts around our electorate, including nearby at the Glass House Mountains Information Centre and at Maleny. I also held five community information sessions on the Stronger Communities Program, including at Beerwah CWA Hall and Maleny RSL. There will be $150,000 allocated to the electorate of Fisher this year to make grants of up to $20,000 to local community groups for purchasing new equipment or building improvements. I will be choosing projects to recommend for funding, together with a committee of local community leaders, from the many Expressions of Interest that have been sent to me this month. I also completed a small business road trip, visiting local firms throughout Fisher across three days, including in Glass House and Beerwah. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback at one of my listening posts, business visits or information sessions.

Get involved in improving regional education The Federal Government is undertaking a national review into the issues and challenges faced by rural and regional students like ours here on the Coast. We are listening closely to try to find ways to improve our regional education system and better prepare our children for their careers. I urge local educators, families and employers in the Hinterland to consider the discussion paper at www. education.gov.au/independent-review-regionalrural-and-remote-education before August 29 and take the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences about how best we can support local students to succeed in school and beyond. Tickets are only $10 and who doesn’t like a good trivia night!?! If you would like to join me on my table or would like to put together your own team, please see details below to book your place. Zane's trainer Peter has been visiting the students at Beerwah for over four years, supporting students with mentoring and their reading skills. Peter has taken on the role of socialising Zane, a 13 month long project while Zane prepares to become a fully trained Guide Dog. As part of Zane's socialising skills, Peter brings him along to school two days a week where he gets to meet and interact with students, offering a wonderful experience to those students involved.

Mr Wallace spoke to the students about how the Australian Parliament worked and the history of democracy in this country. During the question and answer session, topics ranged from bike paths along Steve Irwin Way to Mr Wallace’s favourite sport when he was a child. A cheer went up when the students learned it was soccer and even though bike paths aren’t a Federal issue, Mr Wallace explained how to go about making these sorts of changes. Year 7 students had been learning about the politics of Ancient Rome and set up a ‘seat of power’ couch for Mr Wallace to sit on. He was joined by GCC’s Principal Mike Curtis, Head of Middle School Jacqualina Vreeling and as many of the Year 7 students as could fit into the photo! Kids&Parenting Beerburrum Cemetery re-dedication

A moving Ceremony was recently carried out at the historic Beerburrum Cemetery. Each year, in early August, students from the Beerburrum State School recommit to act as custodians of the cemetery site to watch over the many marked and unmarked gravesites of early pioneers and returned WW1 Servicemen located within the cemetery. This re-dedication service also coincided with National Tree Day and therefore as part of the service, a tree was planted by the students. Adoption by the school to watch over the cemetery is an initiative in partnership with the Queensland State Government, Sunshine Coast Council and the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski attended the ceremony along with six members of the RSL Sub Branch. In addition to the normal re-dedication service, this year the RSL Sub branch also presented the school with a descendant Lone Pine sapling which was planted at the cemetery as part of the ceremony.

Based on the award-winning book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley, Diary of a Wombat is one of the most read and famous children’s books of all time. This iconic Australian children’s classic has made its way off the page and on to the stage at Lake Kawana Community Centre at 10.30am and 12.30pm on Tuesday, September 19. Meet Mothball, the naughtiest wombat in Australia. Bored with her daily routine, Mothball goes in search of shelter and food, creating chaos in the lives of the humans around her. Doormats, bins and washing lines are no match for this mischievous marsupial. Between a packed schedule of scratching, sleeping and eating, Mothball discovers that with a bit of persistence, humans are quite easily trained! Diary of a Wombat features a collection of lovable puppets during a 45-minute show, tickets are just $20 per person or $68 for groups of four (minimum two children). For individual or group bookings, please call Lake Kawana Community Centre on 5413 1400 or visit www.scvenuesandevents.com.au.

Beauty& Beauty&Wellbeing Wellbeing Can you lend a hand selling daffodils?

Most have us have been touched by cancer and understand the importance of the work that Cancer Council Queensland does, so why not do something to assist their fundraising by volunteering to sell Daffodils on the upcoming Daffodil Day? Glenda Halpin has been the Glasshouse Country Daffodil Day Co-ordinator for many years and she has built up a loyal band of locals who are happy to take a shift outside the IGAs at Beerwah, Glass House or Landsborough or outside Woolies at Beerwah. However, she is always on the look-out for some new recruits to do a three hour shift on Thursday or Friday from 8.30am - 11.30am, 11.30am - 2.30pm and then a slightly longer shift on Saturday from 8am - noon. If you think you can help, give Glenda a call on 5494 6853.

Share the Dignity in August The Share the Dignity August collection drive has now kicked off and locals are encouraged to get behind this worthwhile venture by donating sanitary items at local drop off points to help restore dignity for those unable to access sanitary products. Founded in 2015, Share the Dignity was established to help those who cannot access sanitary products when they need them due to factors such as homelessness, poverty, or escape from domestic violence. Realising that thousands of women simply can’t afford sanitary products and are forced to improvise to make sanitary items, the charity seeks to restore dignity to these women and girls by providing access to pads and tampons. Since then, Share the Dignity has grown into a national charity which has collected over 650,000 packets of pads and tampons, from collection points in businesses, schools and other locations all over Australia. Every item collected is registered, sorted and sent to services that directly support women and girls in need. From a handful of volunteers, there are

Yes, footpath is needed

Re: Footpaths are transport aren’t they? (GC&M News, July 26): I couldn’t agree more. To have a continuous all weather footpath between Glass House and Beerwah would be a great advantage to the community. There is already a concrete path from 100 metres South of Tobacco Road to Beerwah, and a path from the north end of Bruce Parade to The Pineapple Patch restaurant. It wouldn’t cost a fortune to join the Glass House/Beerwah paths, and provide a pleasant and safe walk. There is a continuous path from Beerwah to Landsborough, and driving along Old Landsborough Road I’ve noticed quite a lot of people use this path. However, seeing that the ‘Damaged Guardrail’ sign in Burgess Street has been in place for three months, I wouldn’t get too excited about seeing any action about footpaths. Re: Mark McArdle’s column

In regards to Mark McArdle’s column in the recent edition of GC&M News stating that the local churches organise the plant and produce stalls and baked goods at Beerwah Charity Sports Day. This is incorrect. I want to make it clear that it is myself and not the local churches that organise and run the produce stall, which includes making pavlova, jams, chutneys and produce. The churches run the plant and the cake stall. Monies raised goes to the Queensland Cancer Fund. I really enjoy what I do and look forward to meeting lots of people at Produce grower Jack the stall. Property identification

In GC&M News August 2 edition the Maleny Ambulance Officer-in-Charge decried the lack of identification on properties in the district. The worst offenders are the shops in Maple Street, where street numbers are rarer than hen’s teeth. To an out-of-towner armed only with a Maple Street number, it’s a nightmare. Please, shopkeepers, how about putting the number on your frontage? It will help your customers enormously and enhance your business. Trevor Sauer Mapleton

Great work

A huge ‘thank you’ needs to be expressed to all residents who have participated in the current Scarecrow Competition. It is such a wonderful success with many varied and colourful scarecrows being creatively produced. This competition is held to raise awareness to the upcoming Cancer Council fundraising event, the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, as well as to remind us that there are many people across Australia and the world who suffer from cancer. It is a long held dream that one day cures will be found to eradicate cancer, but this takes research and money. Please admire the creative skills of the artists who have handcrafted these scarecrows for our enjoyment, but a

Tigerair frustrations

Value of our Glass House Mountains area?

Re: Ann and Colin Parker's letter in last week’s edition detailing their frustrating experience with Tigerair, I wish to share my own frustrations with travelling on Tigerair. I used to travel domestically with Tigerair and all my friends thought I was insane. It all worked well until last month. I was booked to travel from Sydney to Brisbane on July 20 on return from a Thai International flight from London. On transit in Bangkok I received an e-mail from Tigerair indicating that my 11.15 flight was cancelled and that I was put on a 3.15 flight. When I got to Sydney domestic I was told the 3.15 flight was cancelled and that I should look to buying a Jeststar flight for the next day, as all Tigerair flight were fully booked. They offered a refund. I told the Tigerair person at the desk that I had been travelling for 24 hours and that I was in no mood to lug my luggage around Sydney looking for accommodation. I said that there was also no certainty of me getting a Jetstar flight the next day. My entreaties worked, he booked me on a Virgin flight at 12.00 that day. He told me not to tell anyone else of "my good fortune". I was somewhat more fortunate than Ann and Colin Parker who had to shell $500 each for a Virgin flight. It’s about time the Federal Government appointed an Airline Ombudsman to look at business practices of airlines such as Tigerair. After all, we have a Telecom Ombudsman, so why can't we have an Airline Ombudsman to look at the shabby treatment customers receive from our budget airlines? Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Recycling

I’m delighted with Lea Parkes’ recent focus on ‘Single use take-away coffee cups’. Bravo Lea, you have brought to our attention something that can easily be implemented by anyone to help with the ‘War on Waste’, I absolutely encourage café businesses to have a ‘rewards system for BYO cups/mugs. Following on from Lea’s awareness campaigning efforts; I would like to say thank you to the organisers and all the crew of ‘Destination Blues’ for their cooperation and efforts in reducing the amount of garbage going to landfill. Destination Blues bring 300 people per trip to Beerwah monthly and have worked toward having a recycling focus, so much so, that instead of the original two x 1.5m waste bulk bins, they now have only one waste and one recycling bulk bin. A huge progress for the environment! Some 20 million tonnes of garbage each year makes its way to hundreds of landfill sites, mostly clustered around our coastal areas/cities. Celebrate Glasshouse Country is planning a ‘Recycling Tour’ leaving Beerwah in September. As this will be

Very little it seems! Following a recent meeting at Beerburrum re another rock quarry for the area, I spent some time reviewing the history of the area since I moved here. In the early eighties a local farmer was given approval to transport rock from a Mt Beerwah road site, despite local objections. Today this is the massive Hansen quarry with land stretching to the base of Mt Coonowrin National Park! From little things big things grow, as will happen with the Barro Group quarry, if approved. This will make the third hard rock quarry within the scenic Glass House Mountains area. In the nineties our local council and State Government used this area as a “dumping ground” for inappropriate or unpopular development, as follows: 1990: proposal to expand Beerwah Rd quarry (defeated by residents). 1991: Toxic Waste proposal; Radioactive Waste Dump proposal; Women’s prison (all defeated by residents). Caloundra City Council moved to propose a zone of scenic significance around the mountains to protect them from inappropriate development. Now lost in antiquity! 1996: proposal for a massive expansion of Excel quarry (Hansen) was approved by council despite unprecedented local opposition and a court case. 2004: local bark processing company was made to carry out a major clean-up after residents raised awareness of pollution issues. Local residents led by GMAN worked hard to change the attitude of politicians to this beautiful area and in 2006 the mountains were Heritage Listed. Today tourists visit our lookouts and climb our mountains in droves. Approving another quarry here seems like a very large backward step! Saying we need the rock is not an argument in my book! After all, development is the reason we need the rock and we did not ask for Aura or any other Stockland development, bringing us closer to another Gold Coast. Some places are meant to be appreciated, not to be spoilt! Gwen Malcolm, Glass House Mountains

Rosalie Blum will screen twice

The prize-winning quirky romantic French comedy ‘Rosalie Blum’ will be screened twice this weekend by the Maleny Film Society in the Maleny Community Centre: on Saturday August 12 at 7.15pm (doors open at 6pm for dinner catered by Wild Rocket), then a Sunday August 13 matinee at 3pm (doors open at 2.30pm). Prematurely balding 30-something village hairdresser Vincent Machot, while fending off a match-making cousin, becomes obsessed at a distance by 40-something grocer Rosalie Blum. Vincent’s ‘stalking’ of Rosalie evolves through a series of comic events, with plenty of twists. Scriptwriter Julien Rappeneau, as first-time director, has earned a Cesar award and audience acclaim for this charming and engaging film. The program on both Saturday and Sunday includes a short film gem from Gympie’s Heart of Gold festival, entitled ‘Dream Baby’. Members of MFS may pre-book at the Maleny Information Centre or on-line. Drinks bar, tea and coffee stand and home-made slices available. Check the website: www.malenyfilmsociety.info.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford At last month’s meeting we celebrated our Friendship Day and our 40th anniversary and were pleased to welcome visitors from neighbouring garden clubs, members and former members, Glenis Bruin representing Garden Clubs Australia, and Noel Prior, representing Queensland Council of Garden Clubs. Our first guest speaker was Beerwah local Neil Halpin who spoke on environmental regeneration of degraded land and treating sewage effluent into fertilizer. Joy Hodgens, one of the group’s foundation members, was invited to give a talk of the foundation and a brief history of the PDHS. Joy and Nessie Pratten, our oldest member who celebrated her 98th birthday in July, were invited to cut the cake., pictured right Noel Prior presented the club with a certificate and congratulations on reaching our 40th anniversary and 50th anniversary for the QCGC with the release of a special rose. Sally Joyce showed a selection of projected images of the ongoing work on the rainforest walk at the Peachester State School, giving a brief history of the project which involves planting more vines and plants to attract more butterflies to the area. A few of the visitors took up the invitation of a guided tour and were very impressed with what the children have achieved with a lot of help from Dorothy Robb. Results of the competition bench for July were: 1st Pam Innes on 20 points, 2nd Trish Bradford 16 points. In June Pam Innes was the only entrant on 24 points. Our next meeting is on Thursday August 17. Members will meet at the Peachester Hall at 8.30am to car pool, then outside Amcal Chemist, Beerwah at 8.45am to proceed to the Sandstone Point Hotel just off Bribie Island Road. Lunch will be available at venue. There will be no competition bench and visitors are welcome. For more information, phone 5496 9169.

Plant of the month

Thyme Honey Myrtle Melaleuca thymifolia Thyme Honey Myrtle is a delicate small plant found in the wet, sandy, coastal wallum of south eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales. Growing to only one metre with attractive mauve-purple feathery flowers and grey-green leaves, Thyme Honey Myrtle is a species much sought after for the home garden. The small leaves have a thyme like appearance hence the name, and like other Melaleucas, the bark is slightly papery. Seeds persist on the plant as small woody capsules and can be readily collected. Because of the small size, this plant is suitable for growing in rockeries and tubs, as well as backyard gardens. The small bottlebrush flowers are popular with foraging insects and birds.

From the churches What the world needs now is love. How those words have never lost their meaning over the 50 plus years since it was a big hit in the 60s. The 60s in the USA was a decade of assassinations. I vividly remember as young boy hearing these words as they were so impacting. Disc jockey Tom Clay created this single ‘What the World Needs Now is Love/ Abraham, Martin and John’. The song begins with a man asking a young boy to define such words as bigotry, segregation, and hatred (to which the boy says he doesn't know); he says that prejudice is "when someone's sick". It has the sound of gunfire and other sound effects, and excerpts of speeches by John F Kennedy, Robert F Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr, and soundbites of news coverage of each one's assassination. It was such a very thought provoking song amidst such violence and hatred. Many years later as a young man when I became Christian at 23 years of age, I found GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Ps Barry Leask Church on the Rise Maleny God’s answer to that song, that the world did receive love. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The word ‘loved’ there is a Greek word agapao and it is a love that is selfless, sacrificial, unconditional, the highest of the four types of love in the Bible. The key to God’s love is by relationship not by religion and dogma and tradition. John 1:12 says, “to as many as received him (Jesus)”. When we receive Jesus we begin a journey of faith that many millions the world over have found themselves on – and they agree with that song that “What the world needs now is love.” But it is found in the person of Jesus Christ. God’s love is available to all as John 3:16 says: “whosoever believes in Him”. It is all inclusive – age, gender, or ethnicity are not barriers to God’s love.

Receive inside information and tips on recordkeeping, accurate reporting, acknowledging grant providers, and tracking your success. Landsborough local Jason Davis runs a family operated registered training organisation (RTO) that specialises in providing onsite civil construction and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) training. The business is built on offering a core commitment to providing quality training underpinned by Jason’s extensive resource and infrastructure industry experience. With over 30 years of hands on experience in plant operations, Jason has the practical industry knowledge backed up by years of supervisory roles in all areas of civil and road construction to provide excellent training. This is just not a ‘tick and flick’ training company – the team of highly experienced trainers is committed to providing comprehensive nationally accredited industry training to the highest standard. They want to ensure that their students achieve a high level of operator competency which is essential for the safety of the individual and the workplace. As a fully accredited training organisation, ‘User Choice’ funded training subsidies may also be available. As well as plant and equipment training, the organisation can also help companies with compliance, offer plant Verification of Competency and update tickets for experienced operators. High risk training (working at heights, confined spaces), WHS training, and construction white cards can also be obtained. Call Jason on 0477 222 688 today to find out more, or visit www.finaltrimtraining.com.au.

Super Strawberry Round 5 We are pleased to report that Round 5 of the 2017 Super Strawberry Competition generated more activity. Stanley River Plantation won ‘the biggest’ category with an entry weighing 57 grams, and Green Valley Agriculture won ‘the most unusual’ with a strawberry the stewards named ‘starberry’. Round 6 closes on Friday August 11, 4pm at the Coochin Creek Co-op, but you are welcome to bring in your entries at any time during the week. Remember that this novelty competition is not just for farmers – you could find the champion in your garden or even on a potted strawberry plant! The overall winners will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports on Saturday, August 26 – a community fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland.

Contributed by Ken Barker Club members celebrated the spate of beautiful weather by playing good croquet in a variety of places on the weekend. Vince Carbery, our president, participated in the Nambour Sugar Festival. The games are doubles with partners floating, not unlike some of the wilder parties of the 70s, though in croquet this is all acceptable and proper, as it exposes the higher handicapped player to a variety of skills as they swap from one more experienced partner to another. Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Witta Wagtails had a bye. Whistlers played at Ballinger against the Breezers. It was warm and no wind, perfect day for tennis. And we had lots of long games and rallies, so that made a day even better. But by the end we had enough for one day, and we were happy we brought the win home! Score was 39-35 games, 5-3 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and

on Saturday and Sunday, winning two of four games. On our home courts, on Sunday, Sarah played Helen defeating her 15-8; Kath played Sally with Kath winning 23-4. Blackall Range Care group paid a welcome visit to the lawns on Tuesday. On Thursday, Hazel and Frances played a very tight game to finish 7 all. This bodes well for the upcoming 4th division club championship. You could not get better weather for croquet than this – so come down for a hit on Saturday morning when we train beginners. If you are an experienced player, play days are Thursday and Sunday afternoon 1pm for 1.30.

Contributed by Jim King Another week of unbelievable weather and keen bowling. Although several of our regular bowlers are away, a quality field competed in a jackpot triples on Tuesday. A narrow victory to Sandra Kapatanik, Miles Allen and Joe Walters/Doug McGufficke. The $120 jackpot wasn’t won – worth coming to win it this week. A beautiful balmy (almost balmy till the sun went down) Wednesday evening saw a very good turnout for barefoot bowls. Winners were Outlaws, Mighty 10s and Craig Miller with Ray Elmore – they can’t come up with a team name. Money board was won by Henry Harbutt, the weekly draw by Lyn Hansen – who chose the largest bottle of wine as her prize. Two rounds of touchers were awarded – Margaret Ginns, Min Chatterton, Ray Pantlin and Alan Loynes. The new evening games organiser and MC – Miles Allen – is doing a great job and interacted well with Toni Walters during announcements. It was raining men on Friday for scroungers – unfortunately, no ladies were able to be present. Winners were Ian Chatterton, Doug McGufficke And Brian Fripp and the money board was won by Joe Walters – as usual. It was fantastic to see a group of primary age bowlers at the rink on Saturday morning. If any family is interested, children are welcome from 9.30am for a cost of $3 – bowls, fruit and a bottle of water supplied. Social bowls from 1pm on Saturday was also well attended. Planning is underway for the New Zealand bowlers visit on Wednesday August 16 at 1pm. If you are interested in playing at this enjoyable free event please put your name down on the sheet at the club, email Miles at miles@ milesallen.com or call the club and leave your name on 5494 2335.

Good night daddy

A father put his three-year-old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers which ended by saying: "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, and God bless Grandma and goodbye Grandpa." The father asked, "Why did you say goodbye Grandpa?" The little girl said, "I don't know, Daddy, it just seemed like the thing to do." The next day grandpa died. The father thought it was a strange coincidence. A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this: "God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and goodbye Grandma." The next day the grandmother died. "Holy Moly," thought the father, "This kid is in

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 A Lunar Eclipse has set off a powerful energy in your life. It occurred on the 8th and features the sign of Aquarius. This will highlight your social activities that could inspire you to network with new friends and find those people who you can look up to. If there is any tension between you and a friend make your move to leave them behind. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 This is a month that could lead you into a whole new period until February next year for new projects. You are about to lay the groundwork for a whole new home or office project. The energies indicate you might decorate to brighten up your environment. See if you can move yourself into new friendships to live a higher lifestyle. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 It may seem harder for people to connect this month as Mercury will slide into retrograde motion by the 13th. This means some people will close themselves off emotionally, so be prepared to be supportive only to those that are not closed. The last Full Moon Eclipse supports your efforts over the next six months to relocate now. CANCER June 22 - July 22 The last eclipse was across your money houses, making you very emotional about spending more and getting into more debt. You had better not do this unless you can handle many changes without hysteria. It would be wise to not let anybody push you into an unstable money move. For the next six months find ways to improve your property.

contact with the other side." Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say: "God bless Mommy and goodbye Daddy." The dad practically went into shock! When he arrived home the next day he said, “I've just spent the worst day of my life." The mum said, "You think you had a bad day, you'll never believe what happened to me this morning. My golf pro dropped dead in the middle of my lesson." Contributed by Brian Spark

LEO July 23 - August 22 For the next six months there are huge changes in your outlook and your environment. “Now is the time,” the Walrus said, “to advance your own interests.” Your greatest success under the influence of those major eclipses this month means letting your personality shine. Advance your own interests, perhaps even changing your appearance. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 With two major eclipses this month, signals are being sent to you from the Universe to balance yourself between work duties and private time to rest and recharge. As your opposite sign is Pisces there may be a need to drink more water for your health. If you are at a work office the water cooler may see you make long lasting new friendships now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The eclipses for the next six months have the potential to ignite your social and love life pushing it into overdrive! This is when you will be at your creative best, expressing yourself well in recreational activities. Some social contacts spring pleasant surprises upon you now. There are competing factions vying for your attention or making demands. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Both eclipses this month energise your axis of home or family matters. If you are looking for the perfect home, or the perfect job, there is a good chance of getting what you want. As always, when making major moves it might require a little juggling of the various departments of your life. You will come up with a new plan for the next six months.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 Under two major big eclipses occurring this month, this week begins to see you creating potential for a big sudden change. If a call for help arrives, from a personal friend or a loved one, you will be on your way to help them. Under a Mercury Retrograde there may be someone from your past who needs to be with you again. Expand awareness now! CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 With the planet Jupiter still in Libra for several months your professional zone creates opportunities for expansion. All this will be assisted by two major eclipses to accomplish new developments in our life through purposeful action over the next six months. It is reasonable to dream about love, money and travel to exciting far distant places. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The planet Mars, moving through the sign of Leo, activates powerful energies with two major eclipses this month. Starting this week the emphasis will be on public relations, having fun with your partner and interests in a change of locale. Great success can be achieved in accenting teamwork with your marriage or other alliances. It is transformation time. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The planet Mercury is about to go retrograde and being in your opposite sign, the spotlight may be on your work and service matters. This means to redo any filing systems, throw out old clothes, and check if there is anyone dependent on you that may need help. Consider your beauty regimes, which may be massage, skin treatments and weight loss.
