Hi Everyone
I
n last week’s edition we ran a small story encouraging locals to turn the screws on crime – by having tamperproof screws fitted to your number plate. Through the efforts of Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch, the Beerwah Lions and Queensland Police and the support of Beerwah RSL, all you need to do is head to the RSL car park on Saturday, July 19 between 9.00am – 11.00am for the screws to be installed. This is a great way to help make sure you are not the victim of ‘number plate theft’ and the best news is that it is free. Thanks to the groups who have gotten behind this initiative. Regards,

Support for Senior Constable Lenny Elliot By Sonia Clark
Call Leisa or Michelle

12/60 Simpson Street, BEERWAH
‘Overwhelming’ is the term that has been repeatedly used when describing community support for the various fundraisers over the last few months for Senior Constable Lenny Elliot. He suffered traumatic injuries earlier this year during a traffic incident. Buck’s Bakery at Landsborough ran a ‘Cup Cake for Lenny’ initiative during the month of June, which through local backing successfully raised their $4000.00 target. Overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit exhibited by locals, many of the stories of support have been heart-warming. Bakery staff were touched by kids bringing along their money boxes to buy cupcakes and locals buying the cakes in bulk to distribute as a way of showing their compassion for Lenny. On Friday, July 4, the final cheque was presented to Senior Constable Lenny Elliot along with a massive slab ‘Cheque Cake’ shared by all those who came along to Buck’s Bakery for the presentation. Senior Constable Brendon Manttan from Beerwah police station has also expressed his surprise and gratitude for the amazing community support. Further fundraising efforts include a fundraising

A substantial amount was raised on the day. Hopefully it will help boost Lenny’s morale knowing so many in the local community care, and also provide some help with progress towards his long-term recovery. Lenny wanted to express his gratitude to the many locals who have shown their support. “My family and I have really been overwhelmed by the support and generosity shown by the many local residents and businesses. It’s good to know that I work within a community of people who really do care.”

A crowd of over 250 people packed into the CCSA Hall at Caloundra last Thursday evening to hear the pros and the cons of the disputed future urban development of the Halls Creek Identified Growth Area. The much anticipated event has begun the community consultation process by our local State Government members Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle. Mark McArdle explained to the room that the discussion is not about what will eventuate in the next few years. “It is about what we want to see happen in another 30 to 40 years and what will influence our region for the next 100,” he said. Andrew Powell reiterated these sentiments. “These areas are areas for investigation, not immediate development,” he said. “We must plan carefully, hasten slowly and keep in mind that we are planning for the long term future.” An Identified Growth Area is a term coined in a planning document called the South East Queensland Regional Plan, which sets out maps and delineates where, and by how much, new urban areas will arise within the south-east corner until the year 2031. The forum crowd was told that the State Government is reviewing the Regional Plan
The hall was packed, many of which were Glasshouse Country locals to look beyond the 2031 horizon, and that a difference of opinion has arisen between the visions of our local Sunshine Coast Council and that of the State Government. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson explained that fundamentally council, through the extensive community consultation they did during the preparation of their recently adopted Planning Scheme, determined that the Halls Creek area was not the community and professionally preferred option for the future growth of our southern end of the coast. “I am unashamedly a pro-development Mayor, and our position is clear,” he said.

Cr Rick Baberowski comments on transport infrastructure issues “Council as a whole agreed that an area known as the Beerwah-Caloundra South Corridor Identified Growth Area (or Beerwah East) provided the best option for a sustainable long-term future.” ‘Halls Creek’, a large 3,200 hectare region of expine forest south of Bells Creek Road, bordered by the Pumicestone Passage to the east and Bruce Highway to the west, is owned by the major land developer Stockland. It sits just below the soon to commence new urban development called Caloundra South (also owned by Stockland). Caloundra South will see 24,000 new dwellings house over 50,000 new residents – almost the equivalent of the whole of the Gladstone Regional Council – progressively move onto the doorstep of Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough. Development of the adjoining Halls Creek area would most likely see a further 30,000 people living adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage. Beerwah East is a 5,200 hectare collection of land parcels west of the Bruce Highway and generally east of the communities of Beerwah and Landsborough.
A couple of locals listen intently to the presentations Most of the land is pine forests owned by the State Government and leased to Hancock Timber Resources group, with a mix of other State lands, Council reserves and private landholdings. Through the centre of the area traverses the longproposed CAMCOS rail corridor, joining Beerwah to the coast. The State Government is asking us to tell them if we think that the urban development of Halls Creek or of Beerwah East is our preference. Or possibly neither. Perhaps other potions are more suitable, such as concentrating urban development in and around our existing townships, rather than creating a whole new mega-metropolis. Generally, the disposition of the forum was that people are very wary about locking in one or the other option now for something that will happen in 30 or more years, without more information being known and consequences being discussed. Can we be so presumptuous as to assume we absolutely know now what is best for people who will live and work in these areas who have yet to be born?
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell answers a question from the floor Many forum participants questioned whether these decisions would be best made further down the track, when we (or the next generation) know what they are dealing with. The next step is for Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell to provide us with good, accurate, and unbiased information on the options and to extensively and meaningfully consult with us on what we think and want. It is our job to openly consider the options and information at hand, and to make sure that our elected representatives know our positions. Their duty is then to listen and to act upon what we – their voters – tell them in a genuine and unbiased manner, forgetting their particular side’s political spin and rhetoric, and tempering the inevitable pressure multi-billion dollar land developments (and developers) can have. Over upcoming editions, GCNews will present a series of articles looking at the areas, the concepts, the issues and the facts, so that you can be better informed on what is best for the future of our region.

Curiosity over street art They say that art – like beauty and contact lenses – is in the eye of the beholder. And those beholding the new public art sculptures installed along Simpson Street have expressed a wide range of views as to their beauty or otherwise. As local photographer Ilia Starkovsky, from Beerwah Photographics, was taking photos last week, he undertook a survey of people in Simpson Street on what their thoughts were of the metal pieces. Of the 114 people he asked, almost two-thirds (73) said they liked them, 22 said they didn’t and 19 said they weren’t sure. The younger age groups were more strongly in favour of the quirky statues, with 79% approval in the 10-25 years bracket and 73% approval from the 25-40 year olds. Maybe not so surprisingly, only 41% of the older age group (40 and over) gave them the thumbs up. But if the role of art is to create interest, to get people thinking and to extend the imagination, you can’t disagree that the pieces have achieved that goal. Aristotle once said … “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” From the comments on the GCNews Facebook page, it seems that many people have tried, but some just couldn’t get their head around what the abstract creations were all about. Some thought they were from War of the Worlds

or Star Wars; some thought they were stunning and fun; some said they didn’t fit with the mood of Beerwah; some said they were hideous; some couldn’t work out what they were. Some people have questioned the need for a fictitious history being created when we have a strong local history that inspiration could have been drawn from, some suggested people use their imaginations, and one or two asked if it makes coffee? Now when you walk down Simpson Street, you always see people – especially those with kids – stopping, looking and talking around the objects. And if their function is to create engagement between people – then they’ve definitely served that purpose. As Simpson Street undergoes some of the final stages in the streetscape project, there will be further developments and street art installations along with some interpretive signage, which will hopefully bring all the elements together and showcase the ‘modern country town’ feel that was envisaged.

Tension heats up Glasshouse Country News recently reported that Bangkok Street Fare would be operating their purpose built food van from the car park of the Glasshouse Country RSL on Wednesday evenings and Sunday for lunch and dinner. Earlier in the month the RSL Sub-branch had made the decision to authorise that they would rent part of their land for use by Bangkok Street Fare. As word spread into the community, that takeaway Thai food would be available two days a week at Glass House Mountains, there were a number of Thai food loving locals that were really excited at the prospect. However following trading on the first night, a number of local business people raised their concerns with the RSL, over both the legitimacy and appropriateness of this decision. The RSL, who have been struggling for some time to keep their doors open, saw the food van as a great additional source of funds for them to put back into providing services for Returned Service people in the community. However, in this current tough economic environment, where ‘bricks and mortar’ small
YOUR LOCAL FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC
By Lea Parkes local businesses face constant challenges coping with costs associated with running a business seven days a week during both peak and slow times, has seen battle lines drawn. The decision made by the RSL Sub-branch, without them directly consulting local businesses, has caused tension in this small normally cohesive community. Following the first night of the food van operating in Glass House, contact was made with council to clarify what rules and licences were required, in relation to a food van operating in a commercial business area. Council has advised that due to the ‘community use’ zoning of the RSL land, a commercial operator cannot set up their business on the land. When a town plan is created, specific areas are identified for the type of usage allowed on the land, whether that is residential, commercial, local business or community use, which means business operators must trade in the area zoned for their type of enterprise. The RSL wanted to explain why they have made the decision and how they plan to go forward. We have printed an open letter to the community on our letters page which you can see on page 13.

Investigations into the incident are continuing. New Ag enterprise for GCCC by Jade King, Agricultural Science teacher
Agriculture in the local region is alive and thriving if the level of community support for the Glasshouse Country Christian College’s (GCCC) Agricultural Science Program is anything to go by. Recently, Beerwah’s Coochin Creek Co-op committed $500.00 to assist with the establishment of an exciting new enterprise as a learning resource. Coochin Creek Co-op representative, Errol Graham, was set with the difficult task of selecting the enterprise to be supported from several presented to him by the school’s Ag students. The students demonstrated an in-depth knowledge after thoroughly researching their chosen industries, including interviewing key stakeholders. Presentations included passionfruits, blueberries, cacao, dragon fruit and the ultimate winner, fingerlimes. The funding support from the Coochin Creek Co-op will now go towards establishing the new fingerlime orchard at the school’s agricultural plot. Glass House Mountains fingerlime farmers, Tracy and Gerard Mackle of Coonowrin Fingerlimes, have also pledged to support the students in the planning and maintenance of the orchard. Ag student Taylah Holt selected fingerlimes as the new enterprise she would like to see established on the property due to their unusual appearance and novelty. The varieties ‘Pink Ice’ and ‘Red Champagne’ were Taylah’s favourites, and during her presentation she detailed the pros and cons for both varieties, pest and
Errol Graham and Taylah Holt disease risks, profitability and possible marketing strategies for the future product. Errol Graham was significantly impressed by the students’ presentations and the educational value of the school’s agricultural plot. Feedback from a number of those interviewed for the project by the students indicated that the students questioning and knowledge was impressive. Overall, it is inspirational to see how the local community are pulling together to ensure that the next generation has the opportunity to play a vital role in agriculture. Each and every bit of support towards the Agricultural Program is so greatly appreciated. It is envisaged that the reward will be repaid tenfold when the next generation continues to provide clean and green produce using their agricultural understanding and knowledge.

Dressing up to help sick kids It wasn’t the first time customers have seen the staff at BOQ Beerwah dressed up in costume, but when they dressed as the jobs they dreamed of doing as kids, it still bought a smile to many local faces. And while it seems like a bit of fun, it was for a serious cause, to raise awareness for the bank's children’s hospitals fundraiser Banking on our Kids. Over the past decade, BOQ’s Banking on our Kids appeal has raised $1,357,000 in donations, and this year aims to raise $300,000 to contribute to funding research and equipment through Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia.

BOQ Beerwah Owner-Manager Jeff Willis said it was good fun for a good cause. “It certainly surprised some of our customers when they found their usual bank tellers had transformed into a pirate, a nurse, a fireman and all sorts,” Jeff said. “But it was a great way to spread the word about our appeal and that’s really what this is all about, raising funds for our country’s children’s hospitals. On the day staff also sold 'sweet treats' they had made themselves and were donated by Mr Browns Cafe to raise funds. “There are hundreds of sick children in hospitals across the country battling serious illness every day and we just want to do what we can to help them get healthy, go home and have the chance to grow up and achieve their dreams,” he said. All donations from the appeal go directly towards funding vital equipment, research into breakthrough treatments through the Children’s Hospital Foundation Australia.

Locals to perform at Opera House Contributed by Julianne Kershaw The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra (SCYO), including local members Beth Goodridge and Simon Redshaw, have headed to Sydney as part of the Australian International Music Festival. SCYO members have been working hard over the last six months polishing their performance, as they’ll be competing against youth orchestras from Japan, New Zealand, China, Singapore and the USA. However, they’re up for the challenge and are sounding great! It will be a first time adventure to Sydney for some of the talented musicians, so they’re looking forward to doing a bit of sightseeing while they’re there. There are plans for a trip to Taronga Zoo, a tour of the historic Rocks district and a harbour cruise included in their itinerary. Besides playing at the Sydney Opera House,
SCYO will be performing at City Recital Hall (affectionately know as Angel Place) and Darling Harbour. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and according to SCYO conductor Chelsea Thomas ‘It’s an opportunity of a lifetime!’

A very warm donation After our recent cold snap most of us can appreciate the difference a nice warm beanie can make! So the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains was very pleased when they received a huge donation of handmade beanies by Beerwah local Lesley Samuels. Knowing how handy the beanies will be for people living in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, they really appreciated Lesley’s hard work. Lesley’s beanies, that she makes for fun and
enjoyment, will now be taken down to Brisbane to the Donations in Kind warehouse that operates from Durack. Rotary Clubs throughout the country support a program called Donations in Kind warehouse, where serviceable items are recycled and reused. The volunteers who work in the program are responsible for collecting, sorting, packing, dispatching and distribution of donated items to countries in need of these goods.
The Singing Belles
Contributed by Pam Innes The choir meet and practice at the Mary MacKillop Centre Beerwah. They were delighted to have Beerwah Community Recycling sponsor the purchase of a ‘transportable’ keyboard. This makes it so much easier to arrange the choir so that accompanist Barbara Leach can see both the conductor and singers. The members thank Trish and her team and applaud them for the many community organisations they support. The Singing Belles will perform a bracket of numbers at the Chaplaincy Variety Concert to be held at the Glass House Country Baptist Church on July 20 from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. www.gcnews.com.au
Nambour Electricians
It seems they really would know, because these electricians ALL agree that THEY have SEEN BYD solar panels which they have installed, give their customers MORE electricity than they paid for. And guess what? Most of THEM have got BYD solar panels on THEIR roof too. One master electrician of 25 years’ experience said “BYD were better value for money than 12 other brands of panels Andrew I have installed.” Master Electrician Bellmere
Yet they don’t cost any more than other Tier 1 solar panels. Who can afford NOT to install BYD panels? 5kW for around $6500 (20 panels), 3kW for around $4250 (12 panels) and FINANCE available for renters and owners – both residential AND BUSINESSES.

Fond farewell
Don’t chuck it - fix it
By Sonia Clark The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is running a fantastic community initiative believed to be one of the first in Australia called the Maleny Fixit Cafe. Operating at the centre every second Thursday in ‘the Shed’ from 10.00am until 2.00pm, the cafe is a great opportunity to reuse and recycle. Seeing a need to reduce waste and subsequent landfill, and based on successful overseas ‘repair cafes’, the Fixit cafe started in November 2012 and since then has provided a truly sustainable service that also encourages community engagement. Many household items can be expensive to replace, but with the right skills, items can sometimes be repaired at virtually no cost. The cafe is a place where community members can bring in items to be fixed by people who genuinely like to fix things. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the ‘fixers’ will either fix it, show how it can be done, or provide a suitable referral to someone who can fix it. The volunteer fixers who attend the fortnightly cafe include a skilled bunch of locals including a bike mechanic, a person who can fix sewing machines, a carpenter, household tool repairer and small motor repairer. A small donation is requested for fixed items and visitors to the cafe are invited to stay and chat over a cuppa. The neighbourhood centre also offers a shared community lunch on the same day at a cost of $2.00 for people to enjoy, along with meeting other likeminded people. The next Fixit Cafe will be on Thursday, July 17. For more information see their Facebook page Maleny Fixit Cafe or contact the centre on 5499 9345. Located at 17 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny.

By Lea Parkes After 21 years Gayle Amos is hanging up her Supa IGA uniform and on Thursday this week will say goodbye to all the staff and customers and friends she has made working behind the counter at Beerwah. During this time Gayle has seen many changes to the store – in particularly to its name, Gayle Amos says goodbye to Beerwah Wimberlys, Festival, Franklins, IGA Store Manager Rose Moana Action as well as IGA, and she was also part of the move to the temporary store in Simpson Street. She decided to retire before the business faces the big move into the much larger premises as part of the Marketplace’s redevelopment in late September. Gayle knows she will miss catching up with her regular customers and the staff at work, but as she and her husband Neil plan to stay living in the area, she will still be around. Thanks Gayle for always being a friendly face to so many over the years, hope you enjoy your holiday to Bali and congratulations to you and Neil on your Golden Wedding Anniversary for later in the year.
Theatre and Performance workshop By Lea Parkes A very proud group of parents had the opportunity to attend the final performance of the Theatre Workshop group held at BADYAC in the first week of the school holidays. The group of students aged from 11, who each had a passion for theatre, performance and writing, Aaliyah, Jade, Ella, Michael, Dakota, Kayla, attended the five day Abagail, Molly and Natassaja following their workshop facilitated by industry expert Rhiannon performance Patten. Topics covered included; speech and articulation, improvisational tactics, script writing, characterisation and performance and presentation. There was a very high level of energy and excitement in the room throughout the performance, and the students clearly enjoyed the experience.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford The June meeting was well attended with President Coral welcoming visitors, members and Angie Andrews, our guest speaker. Jeff Bodley and Rob Morris have been out and about again, this time visiting gardens in the Hunter River Valley in NSW. Guest speaker Angie explained about all the health benefits of the Aloe Vera plant. She showed us how to extract the juice from a mature leaf, then mix with orange juice or any other juice of your choice. We all had a taste test. It’s very good for the immune system. She explained a few other ways to use it, but for people taking prescription medication, please check that the juice doesn't react with your medication. Coral thanked Angie for her interesting talk and presented her with a fruit basket. Results of the competition bench for May 1 were Coral Beutel 21 points 2nd Pam Innes. The next meeting on Thursday, July 17 in the Peachester Hall is Friendship Day, visitors are welcome. Re: Pathways
I'd like to thank Wayne Temple for making a case for improving our pathway network in the June 25 edition of GCNews, ‘In a spin over bike paths’. This supports what I've heard from other members of the community. I agree with him, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to share a bit of good news and give my perspective on what some of the challenges are. On the day of writing (June 27), I can confirm that over $440,000 was endorsed in council's 2014/15 budget for new pathways in Division 1. The focus is on 'missing' sections of pathways to schools (used regularly by children and mums with prams) and on leveraging off pathways conditioned as part of residential developments. That means the costs are shared between council and the developers and a more complete network of pathways reaches out from our schools sooner. Currently council is working on plans for the pathways connecting the new Coochin Twins estate and the existing Coochin Hills estate. This second section will also contribute to further progress on the Glass House Mountains to Beerwah cycling path, which is a medium-term goal after we improve connectivity to our schools. This intra-town route typifies the challenges of building the extensive pathway network we all want for Division 1 - the major obstacle being the high cost of building over watercourses and floodprone areas. This often massively escalates the cost and in the current economic climate is the factor that most often stalls pathway projects in our beautiful but complex terrain. I'm always happy to hear local views about where we could improve the network - although of course we still have to live within our means and can't get to everything immediately. Local knowledge helps me build the case for getting funding so I'd echo Wayne in encouraging community members to use council's feedback forms and to sign his petition. Walking and cycling needs to be an increasing part of living in or visiting our Glasshouse Country townships; and everything we can do to slow down our hectic lives a little and facilitate an active lifestyle is a good thing. Cr Rick Baberowski Division 1 Sunshine Coast Council
You said it Mal
Mal Brough stated in last week's GCNews ‘I recently voiced my views about the importance of keeping the inter-urban break between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast’. But somehow he forgot to mention the Hall's Creek community forum held Thursday, July 3 in Caloundra where the public could meet with members of council and government and learn all about the proposed Hall's creek development. While he went on to say ‘there has been much talk about various development options including
Hall's Creek’, actually, this is the only option on the table being forced onto us by his party’s State LNP office. Then he states, ‘let's look further ahead than the proposed 30 years and decide what we want for our region generations ahead’, and ‘..consider what is important to us and our region because once these areas are gone they are gone for good.’ Such a view is so endearing and sentimental, unfortunately it makes my heart ache to know as our Federal member, you have approved the $150 million Caloundra interchange upgrade which will make the brand new Steve Irwin Way section obsolete by putting a new road straight through nationally listed endangered forest ecosystems and displacing protected wildlife (including koala's) by bulldozing a 35 ha area. That area is important Mal. Federally funded clearing has already begun on the Bruce Hwy at Roys Road / Dianella Road to link up to Halls Creek-Caloundra South, so please, spare us the sentimentality of protecting green space unless you are prepared to use your power to intervene in your party's spearhead into the Sunshine Coast, and cease funding road developments that galvanise poor planning and critical habitat destruction. Wayne Reid Maleny
Parents should be aware
Trail bikes are popular in semi-rural areas like Glass House Mountains but persons riding unregistered bikes and / or unlicensed in national parks and council reserves are placing others and themselves at risk. These riders are a threat to the safety of children and adults who may be present in parks or reserves when bikes are ridden there. Unregistered or unlicensed riders are subject to Queensland traffic laws when riding off road on public land but are not covered by CTP insurance should they be involved in an accident with another party. Parents who allow their teenage children to ride trail bikes illegally on public roads and on public land should be aware that they could be subject to legal action if their children injure others. This could result in those parents being sued personally for significant amounts of damages. Trail bikes should be transported to approved riding locations using a trailer or other means and not ridden on a public road. Anyone observing illegal trail bike riding can contact Beerwah police directly on 5436 5222. Ray Sanderson Glass House Mountains
Pumicestone passage total destruction
I have just been to the Halls Creek Forum held in Caloundra. The developers of Caloundra South Stockland want to build a city of 75,000 people. This will cost the tax payer in excess of $300 million and the companies profit margin is about $5 billion. The development will destroy Pumicestone Passage as we know it and the fish breeding grounds, our food supply. The wildlife on South Caloundra and Halls creek properties will have to move on or be killed. The hinterland will have to stand still for 100 years while the State government concentrates on our next city. At present no government has got any money for tourism or infrastructure. www.gcnews.com.au
If we don’t get greater population we don’t get infrastructure or tourism. That seems to me to be blackmail. Maybe we need to look closer at the Beerwah East area? Why are we handing out licenses to cut down our hardwood forests in the name of harvesting, don’t worry about tourism and wild life. Richard Plantinga Beerwah
of the Pumicestone Passage, which is already suffering water degradation. Stockland is a reputable and desirable developer and we may be talking about 30 years time, but decisions made in the near future will strengthen or will compromise later protection of the alreadydiminished inter-urban break and the world-class ecosystems of the Pumicestone Passage. Ross Mcnab Peachester
Bell's Creek or Beerwah East?
What the?
At the community forum to discuss investigation of Bells Creek or of Beerwah East for later urban development, the Stockland speaker showed slides and described Stockland's Bells Creek cleared ex-forestry land as so degraded that it could not support even the few head of cattle grazing it. His argument was that Bells Creek should be the preferred investigation site and Stockland would be putting this degraded land to its best use as urban development. A far better solution would be council's preferred Beerwah East as the preferred investigation site, and for the council or state government to acquire Stockland's Bells Creek land at its present extremely low value, and for this land to be revegetated to its original native state possibly at the cost of a company or instrumentality seeking carbon offset credit. This would not only maintain, rather than diminish, the inter-urban break but also provide much needed protection to the fragile ecosystems
Can you work this one out? Members of the Glasshouse Country Community and beyond are invited to clear out their sheds and cupboards of all unwanted items - put them in their car boot and bring them along to Glasshouse Country Uniting Church grounds (Twin Peaks Drive Beerwah) between 9.00am and 2.00pm on Saturday, August 16. For just $10.00 per boot we invite you come along to sell your wares. The church will also have a cake stall and hot drinks. Enquiries: Chris Bell 5492 5885.
Open letter to the Glasshouse Community The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch exists to serve the needs of ex-service personnel, their families, widows and orphans. It has done so on the Reed Street site since 1953 when it was incorporated. Since its inception, the RSL has used hospitality as a means to engage and attract the community, to fund its work on behalf of those suffering from the effects of their service, and to promote its community goals and support the general community. With an increase in younger returning service people from modern conflicts and a general increase in population numbers in the area, now more than ever, the Glasshouse Country RSL needs to effectively engage the public, and hospitality remains our dominant method. At the Board meeting on June 17 we discussed and authorised the use of the Bangkok Street Fare food van at our premises for a trial period of three months, trading for up to 12 hours per week over two days. Clearly their primary aim is to make a living for their ex-service owner by serving good food to the public, and we are sympathetic to that, but we authorised it because it also meets our ongoing aims. As a member of the RSL, Mr Berris is able to work with us in striving towards our greater goals. The key results we are hoping for during this trial period are: 1. Awareness of our Club to members of the public, who; a. Do not normally attend, and b. Would come at times we are not normally open. 2. The capacity to raise additional funding for our community work by receiving rent from Mr Berris.
Conditions
3. Increased interaction between the community, RSL displays and RSL members with a view to a. Increasing the membership of the club, and b. Increasing the club’s relevance to a younger generation. In point of fact, rather than merely ancillary to the RSL use of the site, it, or something similar, is integral to the ongoing sustainability of the club, and we are more than a little concerned that our on-going attempts to develop are being thwarted. As said before, the Glasshouse Country RSL has existed on this site since 1953, and throughout that time has sold food to members, friends and the public both from its indoor dining room and from outdoor barbecue facilities. We have served 50 meals and parked 30 cars within the area on many occasions. It has caused some concern to the Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch Board that there is now resistance within the Glasshouse business community as to the extension of those services that have been traditional to this site and has resoundingly enjoyed huge support from the Glasshouse community. Whilst we are unsure as to whether Bangkok Street Fare will be granted permission to trade on our site from their food van, rest assured that we are negotiating with Mr Berris to work from our kitchen, thus extending the opening hours of the Sub Branch. Contributed by Lesa Medhurst Bowen Therapy is gaining a reputation as an accepted therapy for a wide range of ailments and injuries. Articles relating to it can now be found in most health magazines and on web sites such as www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/. What it is less well known for is its ability to assist with reducing stress, easing tension, and promoting relaxation and a sense of well being. Long, slow and gentle moves are applied to the back and neck with regular short waits between moves. Other areas, as well as the jaw where a lot of tension is held, may need attention as well. As the body gradually relaxes, the mind also has the opportunity to become less stressed. Clients become totally relaxed and sometimes even fall asleep. It is an excellent time to clear your mind through reflection and meditation.

Doctor of Chiropractic Successful aging: 10 tips for better sleep
Getting enough good-quality sleep is essential to staying healthy and aging well. These 10 simple steps can help you overcome general sleep difficulties, including insomnia. 1. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule and routine. Go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning. A set sleep routine will ‘train’ you to fall asleep and wake up more easily. 2. Use the bed only for sleep and sex. Avoid computers, watching TV, etc in bed. 3. Cut down on caffeine. For some people, a single cup of coffee in the morning means a sleepless night. Caffeine can also increase the need to urinate during the night. 4. Be physically active. Regular aerobic exercise like walking, running, or swimming provides three important sleep benefits: you fall asleep faster, attain a higher percentage of restorative deep sleep, and awaken less often during the night. 5. Limit daytime naps. Prolonged napping can disrupt your natural sleep cycle and prevent you from feeling tired enough to fall asleep. 6. If you use tobacco in any form, quit. Nicotine makes it harder to fall asleep. 7. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol depresses the nervous system, so a nightcap may help some people fall asleep. But this effect disappears after a few hours and may lead to waking up throughout the night. Alcohol can also worsen snoring and other sleep breathing problems. 8. Improve your sleep surroundings. Remove the television, telephone, and office equipment from the bedroom. This reinforces the idea that this room is meant for sleeping. An ideal environment is quiet, dark, and relatively cool, with a comfortable bed and minimal clutter. 9. If you’re still awake after about 20 minutes in bed, get up and read awhile to relax. Positive results indicated from Calmbirth study
Increased confidence and reduced need for pain relief are the recent findings of a study released in April this year into Calmbirth conducted at Sydney’s Royal Hospital for Women. In the pilot study, expectant mothers and their birth companions were invited to attend a calmbirth childbirth preparation program. Of 110 couples in the pilot study, 88% reported feeling confident or very confident about the birth, after doing calmbirth, and 40% did not require pharmacological pain relief of any kind during labour. According to local Glenview Calmbirth practitioner, Debbie Peters, mothers who learn practical childbirth skills are more likely to avoid unnecessary interventions and experience a calm and confident birth. Debbie said Calmbirth aims to give couples the confidence to work with the birth as it unfolds and to avoid unnecessary interventions. The feedback has been positive with “women telling us that attending the Calmbirth course has helped them transition from feeling fearful and experiencing a lack of control to gaining confidence in themselves and their ability to give birth,” Debbie explains. With over 10 years of experience in the method, Debbie will be offering Calmbirth weekend courses at the new venue of Glenview Gardens. The course dates are as follows: Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20, August 16 and 17, September 20 and 21, October 18 and 19 and November 15 and 16. Cost is $395.00 (early bird discount available) and includes the workshop that runs from 9.00am until 5.00pm each day, morning tea and lunch on both days, all course materials and ongoing support. To register email Calmbirth.debbiepeters@gmail.com or contact Debbie directly on 0424 281 063. To find out more, there will be a free morning tea and information session for expectant mums and their birth companions, being held at Glenview Gardens Resort, 17 Glenview Road, Glenview on Saturday, July 19 from 10.30am - 11.30am. Bookings are essential, please phone 0424 281 063, or email debwill.peters@gmail.com
History of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club (part one) Over the next few months we hope to share with readers the history of the Sports Club as written by Mr W Fullerton back in 1987. On October 24, 1987, Mr W Fullerton, OBE and Patron of the Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club delivered an address on the occasion of the official opening of the new Clubhouse. Among those present on this occasion were the Hon Kev Lingard, the Hon Bill Newton, Mrs Newton, Councillor Upson, Councillor Free, Patron Jack (Gowen), Club President John Clancy and Mrs Clancy. Mr Fullerton addressed those present as follows:‘It is a pleasure and privilege to be present this evening on this auspicious occasion when our Clubhouse is officially opened by our distinguished guest. This is the culmination of years of planning and months of hard work by skilled volunteers. We are proud of the Clubhouse which we know is a showpiece, for nowhere else will one find, in a country area, a Clubhouse so spacious, with such a well appointed canteen and bar in such a beautifully landscaped setting, and an idyllic view over immaculate playing fields. I feel that in the midst of our celebrations and rejoicing we would be remiss if we did not pause for a moment to pay tribute to the founders of our Club, and all of those people who have kept this Club functioning through all these years, sometimes under the most trying circumstances. So I am delighted to be given this assignment of recounting the history of the Club from its beginning.
Mr Fullerton then continued: 'The best place to start a narrative is at the beginning, so that we find that a Government Gazette notice in 1916 announced that the Glasshouse Mountains Recreation and Showgrounds Reserve had been surveyed and gazetted on the 2nd August 1916. On the 21st August 1917 we find another Government Gazette notice stating that five Trustees had been appointed to control the reserve. Those appointed were Mr Frederick Lonergan, Mr Frank Gowen, Mr Robert Fullerton Snr, Mr George Markwell and Mr Hubert Eaton Kemp. This would indicate that the initial steps had been taken to form the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club because someone had convened a Public Meeting and submitted names of people prepared to accept the position of Trustee. However, this is all conjecture as the first minute book of the Sports Club is missing.' Earlier this year, Mrs Chris Freshwater was appointed a Trustee – almost 100 years after her ancestor, Mr Hubert Kemp, was appointed one of the first Trustees – and the existing Trustees had not been aware of the connection! This story is to be continued in further issues of the Glasshouse Country News….stay tuned!

Only one entry is allowed per pet per month, and all photos must be of high resolution for printing. Photos will be included each month on ‘Pets and Animals’ page. Email to reception@gcnews.com.au and include your name, phone number, the name of your best friend and a description of them and their favourite activities. The promotion will close in September, when we will randomly select two more of the featured pets to win a spot in the 2014 Sunshine Coast’s Best Friends, Pets and Their People book, see Kathy’s website www. whisperimages.com.au
First winners chosen
When we first asked readers to share their animal photos way back in February, we advised that from then until September we would be randomly choosing four winners to receive vouchers for photography work to be included in the Best Friends Book. We decided to choose two winners from the first four months and we will choose the other two winners at the end of the competition. This will give photographer Kathy Hill more time to get the photo shoots Musang

Buckle up your pets
The ongoing toll of animals injured or killed falling from moving vehicles has prompted the RACQ to warn motorists about the dangers of unrestrained pets when travelling in the car. RACQ’s Renee Smith said motorists underestimated the risks even a small crash posed to the lives of their cats or dogs. “The RSPCA figures show every year around 5,000 dogs are injured or killed in Australia as a result of falling from a moving vehicle,” Ms Smith said. Ms Smith said while it’s not a legal requirement to restrain your pet while driving, motorists could be fined if their dog or cat was in their lap or caused a distraction. “Ultimately it’s about ensuring their wellbeing. Motorists should treat the safety of their pets as highly as they treat the safety of their child,” she said. “If you’re driving at 60kph with an unrestrained 20kg dog and you need to break suddenly, the impact for your dog if it collided with the driver, passenger or dashboard would be the same if they were dropped from a three storey building. The RACQ has released a YouTube ‘How To’ video, guiding pet owners on the safest way to restrain their pet, which can be viewed at www. youtube.com/ racqofficial.
Time to desex your dogs and cats
Can we find a home for...
Hundreds of unwanted cats and dogs move from Sunshine Coast Council’s pound to animal welfare shelters each year – many due to unplanned breeding.
Community Programs Councillor Jenny McKay said council was calling on owners to do their bit and desex their pet now to take advantage of multiple benefits. “It’s also perfect timing for animal owners to further benefit from this promotion with animal registration renewals due in September, as owners of desexed and micro chipped cats and dogs receive a significant discount for registering their pets. As part of the RSPCA’s Operation: Wanted program, which council is supporting, they are offering a 20% discount off desexing and micro chipping procedures at a number of participating vets coast-wide including Maleny until August 31, Cr McKay said. For further details visit council’s website - www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Congratulations to Trailers 2000
I would like to add my congratulations to Trailers 2000 in Beerwah, for the Regional Award at the Queensland Telstra Australian Business Awards. I met with this family business some time ago and was impressed back then with their commitment to be the best that they could be. It’s even more inspiring to think that they began in 1993 on the NEIS government business development scheme and that Trailers 2000 is now the largest Australian trailer manufacturer of superior quality, fully galvanised trailers and accessories, and processors of rolled formed steel. It now employs 40 people and my congratulations go to owners Stuart and Jenny Daniels, who have worked hard to make Trailers 2000 a great business with a strong reputation for consistent quality. The company has developed a rent-then-buy facility for new customers and is the only trailer retailer to offer 24/7 roadside assistance and an extensive safety education program. Stuart and Jenny involve all staff in business development and encourage new ideas. Their interest in staff and their families has stretched to assisting in the purchases of first cars and first homes. Now that’s the way to attract and hold high-quality staff!
Pests look out!
Glass House Mountains is to be included in a pest survey to be carried out in rural and peri-urban areas of the Sunshine Coast. In an area such as ours leaving pest plants and animals can lead to massive environmental damage, loss of diversity and agricultural productivity – and be a threat to livestock and domestic animals. The surveys will take place between now and October, and information including booklets, fact sheets and public notices will be sent out to landowners. If you already have issues regarding pests you can contact us and we can arrange a visit to your property. Council will also be auditing and treating local roads for declared pest plants.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Hinterland Bus Trial extended
It is with much excitement I can share that the Hinterland Connect Bus Service is revving up for another year thanks to the joint support of council and the state government. While the 2013/14 trial fell short of meeting State Government benchmarks, a review found that the current service connections weren’t ideal for all passengers. A new and improved, more user friendly timetable will be available from TransLink soon. Be sure to send through any feedback you have about the changes.
Ahead for Division 5 …
I’m pleased to advise Division 5 has not been overlooked in council’s Capital Works Budget for the 2014/15 Financial Year, brought down last month. Local residents can look forward to investment in a number of upgrades, new facilities and other improvements over the next 12 months. To find out more about what’s planned for your community, visit council’s website.
Blazing a trail for fire safety
With prevention the best cure when it comes to bushfires, you’ll be happy to know council is committed to doing what it can, where it can, to reduce fire risk across the region. We have developed the Bushland Reserve Network Fire Management Guidelines to identify our range of responsibilities and actions and reduce fire risk across the 528 reserves we manage throughout the Sunshine Coast covering an area of 5450 hectares.

Coochin Creek Bushland Group Contributed by Roger Callen
Next plantings will occur on Friday, July 18, several of our members are away this month, so any assistance would be most welcome to come and join us. We operate from 8.30am until 12.00noon. Morning tea, good company and equipment provided. Coochin Creek Bushland Group has now planted about 1,500 plants in Emma Park and all are growing well. There has been some minor vandalism and theft of stakes and guards, but overall it’s looking good. You may have noticed a sewer line is being dug for the new housing development north of Mt Coochin and west of Rupari Hill. The developers will be constructing a walking track along this route which passes through some attractive forest. They will also be developing an offset area at council’s request along the lines of our own wetland planting in the degraded wetland area in the north western corner of Emma Park and the Conservation Reserve. This will adjoin our planting along Coochin Creek.

Polyscias elegans
This fast growing medium sized tree can be found in a variety of rainforests from southern NSW to FNQ. Celerywood has large attractive bright green leaves which provide shelter for slower growing species making it a favourite with bush regenerators. The fissured scaly and rough bark of the older trees when scratched smells like celery, as with the crushed leaves, hence the common name. Polyscias elegans is one of those plants that have a straight trunk with the foliage on top which lends itself to under planting when more mature. When flowering, purple panicles appear from February to April. The fruit is a drupe which is brown to a dark purple in colour with two seeds inside. It is a favourite for a large variety of birds including Brown Cuckoo Dove, Australasian Figbird, Superb Fruit Doves, Lewin’s Honeyeater, Green Catbird, Silvereye, Olive-backed Oriole, Pied Currawong, Paradise Riflebird, Rose Crowned Fruit Doves, Topknot Pigeon as well as the Wompoo Fruit Dove.

Caloundra Family History Research The June guest speaker at our group’s general meeting was renowned genealogist and family historian, Shauna Hicks. Her subject was ‘Google Tools for Genealogy: Are you Making the Most of Google?’ and she gave a ‘plain English’ explanation on the many intricacies of the benefits of ‘googling’. At the July meeting, the subject addressed by the guest speaker will be ‘A Genetic Look at Family History’; something the group has not touched on before. The presenter will be Ann Swain, genealogist and family historian, as well as a Fellow of QFHS. Visitors are welcome to hear her talk, commencing at 1.30pm on Thursday, July 17 at the CFHRI research rooms. The facility, accessed through Gate 2 at the Corbould Park Racecourse, has plenty of parking and wheelchair access. All enquiries about the group are welcomed by contacting June on 5493 2679, Roz on 5493 1197, or Dawn on 5492 2208. Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Mooloolah Soccer Club
Contributed by Gus Gillespe It started off perfectly at Mooloolah on Saturday morning. The weather was great, the pitches looked superb and the U6’s won 8 - 0. The U7 Boas then won their game 21 - 0 (how did they fit them all in)? The U10 vipers played some really attractive football and won comfortably 7 0. The U11 Tiger Snakes came back from 1 - 3 down to win 4 - 3. The U11 Mambas not only kept their first clean sheet, but also took their first points of the season with a tough 1 - 0 win over Currimundi. Not all went Mooloolah’s way though. As the weather turned cold and nasty, the U12 Strikers picked the wrong day to have a couple of late withdrawals. They suffered an 8 - 0

loss to top of the table Caloundra Gold. All in all though, another great day of football at Mooloolah Soccer Club. on a count back from Val Turner. Division 3 winner was Lydia Costello with 77 Nett, on a count back from runner up Lyn Steele, also on 77 Nett. Gross winner in Division 3 was Bridget John with 112 off the stick. NTPs went to Sue Williamson on number 2, Fay Barry on 5, and Karen Gannon was nearest on the 16th. Sonia took out the Div 1 on the 18th and Lydia Costello won Div 2. Jasmin Parkes was our best putter on the day with 26 for the round, and the ball rundown went to 79 Nett. Let’s hope this lovely weather keeps up for our Mixed Foursomes Championships to be held on Saturday. Good luck to all players, stay safe and good golfing.
The 2014 Super Strawberry Competition started off slowly, with only two entries in Round 1. However, it was good to see former champion Oaklands Farms winning the round with a strawberry weighing a very respectable 145 grams. The annual Super Strawberry Competition runs for eight weeks leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival. Each weekly winner receives a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel, and the prize for the Champion grower is a dinner for two, also donated by Beerwah Hotel. Round 2 will close at 4.00pm next Friday, July 11. Entries can be presented during the week at Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative for weighing and recording. Thanks to the Co-op and Beerwah Hotel for their support again this year. The Charity Sports & Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, August 23 at the Beerwah Sports Ground. All proceeds to Cancer Council Queensland as in previous years.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 This week sees you getting ready for the full Moon at the weekend and puts some relationships under strain, perhaps bringing tensions to a climax. Consider where changes are needed but don’t be prodded into doing something you may regret. Pay attention to loose ends of joint financial arrangements now. LEO July 23 – August 22 Wednesday to Friday sees you making expansive travel plans which culminate on the weekend by settling payments for an exciting trip. There may be a need to offer a service, or give some sympathy to some friends in trouble or off to hospital. It makes you think to take more care of your own health on all levels. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This weekend coming, you appreciate how friends draw you into their warm welcoming embrace with many planets in Cancer at various times this month. People want to help you so let them know your hopes and wishes. With the full Moon in Capricorn you may design a radical agenda with regard to finances. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 It may be a difficult week as it will build up to the full Moon in the sign of Capricorn. With the Sun, Venus and Mercury, in Cancer and Uranus in Aries there are pressures from all four corners of your life - home, work, relationships and health. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 From Monday thorough to Wednesday the Moon is in your own sign and therefore you are ready to blow your own trumpet. For Thursday and Friday foresight and good judgment are needed when personal interests and belongings are concerned. Serious tones take hold of the weekend because of the full Moon. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Wednesday to Friday this week sees the Moon in your sign so stimulating spurts of energy give rise to you thinking about enrolling in a marathon! CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The full Moon in your sign, coming up for the weekend, turns up the heat. It may seem that everything is in a state of flux or crisis. Shopping excursions, now that the big sales have finished, may not be entirely satisfactory. Nevertheless it could be still fun to just look. Perhaps a golden touch to finances? AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With the Sun, Mercury and Venus in Cancer at varying times, sensitive feelings relate to home, family and career. Give yourself plenty of time with regard to transportation, better to arrive early than too late. This full Moon in Capricorn on the weekend is the month’s emotional reminder of a hectic agenda now.
PISCES February 20 – March 20 This full Moon this weekend, in the sign of Capricorn, highlights you working within group endeavours and an element of volatility can make them especially exciting. You may hear of friends who have received shocks or surprises. Any problems in your social life that may have strained you need attention. ARIES March 21 – April 20 For an Aries, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week gives a better result as the Moon is in Sagittarius, which is an expansive sign for all Aries. The full Moon over the weekend will be in the sign of Capricorn and may capture you in its web of struggles involving work, parents or family members. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The beginning of this week has some beneficial results as the Moon slides through the sign of Scorpio until Wednesday and Thursday when it moves into Sagittarius. The weekend looks positively better for you under the full Moon in Capricorn. This is the time you can learn something new but proceed slowly. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Your lines of communication should be better with relationships as the planet Venus moves through your sign until July 19. There is a strong buzz radiating from others to you as well as a charming one from you. Venus keeps your spirits up, seeing the bright side of life. Weekend’s full Moon solves problems.
