Hi Everyone Well last week when I wrote my column about not knowing the final results for the council elections, I was hopeful that we would know more by this edition. At this stage, Rick Baberowski has a strong lead in primary votes with Bob McLean in second position, and Ann Ross is in third place. But as Bob and Rhys had agreed to preference each other, this could really make a big difference for moving Bob into the lead. We have an optional preferential voting system in Queensland which I am not going to try and explain – but if you are really interested in getting to the bottom of how it works then check out the Electoral Commission Website at www.ecq. qld.gov.au/voting - trying to second guess how things will pan out is probably way too tricky for me.

So instead of focusing my energy this week on what will happen, I have been much more caught up in the lead up to Mother’s Day and what is happening in Glasshouse Country. If you haven’t got around to organising your Mother’s Day gift then you should check out the lovely things in our ‘What a Woman Wants’ page or have a look at all the great ways you can spoil mum in our Mother’s Day feature page 19 – 21 (so you have no excuses for not being able to think what you can do). "Bob Dylan' at the Musos Club, 7.00pm - 10.00pm at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. It has been 50 years since his first album so we thought that’s a good reason to make him our theme artist for our next get together. Given there are 30 odd Dylan songs on our program from eight different performers it might even be thought of as a ‘Tribute Show’. Artists on the program include Ian Williams, Peter Gawith, Gary Josland, Michael Dawson, Doug Pullen, Frank Moroney, Paul Fagan and yours truly. Songs on the program will include ‘Like a Rolling Stone’, ‘Knockin’ on Heaven's Door’, ‘Shelter from the Storm’, ‘Queen Jane Approximately’, ‘Sara’, ‘I'll be your Baby Tonight’, and many more.

The pathway, which runs from Dana Close to the back of the Bowls Club on Coonowrin Road, runs across a section of land owned by local family Gloria and Gordon Lawrie, who installed the path around 20 years ago as a shortcut for their children to make the daily journey to the Glass House Mountains State School. Over the years, the pathway has proved very popular with locals, however, over the past 12 months, heavy rainfall has seen some subsidence in the area, and the pathway is no longer safe for public access. Gloria said because of state of the pathway, they were left with no option but to fence off the accesses from Dana Close and Smerdon Way. “Recently we installed a fence and a plastic orange barrier, but people have simply ignored them and the signage, even going so far as to pull the temporary barrier down. “We don’t want to see someone injured if the path gives way, so we’re left with no option but to fence off access to the path altogether,” Gloria said. The land the pathway is located on is clearly signed as private property, but sits adjacent to the land owned by Council. Gloria said she and her husband hoped to meet with the new incoming Division 1 candidate to discuss options for the area in coming weeks. “In the meantime, we would like to ask regular users of the pathway to observe the signage and fencing, and stay off the pathway,” Gloria said.

Early and late appointments available We’re above Suncorp at the entrance to Woolworths! 5 minutes north of the Ettamogah Pub Shop 4, Chancellor Village Bus. Centre, 1, Chancellor Village Boulevard, Sippy Downs

The Open Day will celebrate the centenary of a remarkable feat, the climbing of two of the Glasshouse Mountains by Jenny, Etty and Sara Clark on the Empire Day weekend in 1912. Not only did these fit young women climb Mt Tibrogargan and Mt Coonowrin, but also two of them rode their bicycles to and from Brisbane. Bankfoot House is situated in the Glasshouse Mountains and dates from 1868, when William and Mary Grigor established it as a lunch stop and staging post for Cobb and Co coaches on the road between Brisbane and Gympie. Bankfoot House also provided accommodation for people who visited the area to tackle the spectacular volcanic peaks. On the Open Day, the Governor will welcome visitors, in particular descendants of the Clark sisters and cyclists from recreational cycling clubs, as well as Grigor family descendants, including Ethel Burgess and Bill Ferris. Cyclists from several recreational cycling groups are expected to visit Bankfoot House on the Open Day. Other cyclists are very welcome to ride to Bankfoot on the day. Visitors will be treated to a display of vintage bicycles, demonstrations by pennyfarthing riders, a best decorated bicycle competition, a bicycle tyre derby, workshops on bicycle maintenance and guided tours of the heritage-listed Bankfoot House. The Caloundra Family History Research group will be there to offer advice to people tracing their family tree. The Peachester History Committee will have a display of historical photos and publications. There will be a display of stunning photographs of young men and women climbing the mountains in the 1920s and 1930s from the Bankfoot House collection. Many of the photos were taken on the faces of Mt Tibrogargan and Coonowrin.

A vintage motor vehicle over 100 years old still in running order will be on show: a 1903 Oldsmobile. The Open Day is being organised by the Friends of Bankfoot House in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council on Sunday, May 27 from 9.00am - 4.00pm. Bankfoot House is situated at 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains, www. bankfoothouse.org Entry to the Open Day is FREE and refreshments will be available. All parking will be in the grounds of the Australian Teamsters Hall of Fame (across the road) where traditional tea and damper will be on sale.

In 1945 when aged about nine, Ethel Burgess of Glass House Mountains won the Best Decorated Bicycle Competition at a garden party in aid of the Australian Comforts Fund. Ethel decorated the wheels of her bike with coloured paper and placed her bride doll on the handlebars, with the bride’s train trailing along the sides of the bike

There’s a lot more to Lions, says incoming president

Two way battle continues in Division One As GCNews went to press this week, it appears the ratepayers in Division 1 will have to wait a little bit longer to find out who their new Councillor will be.

When Rob Greenwood joined the Beerwah Lions Club seven years ago, little did he know that it would lead to him achieving his lifelong goal to do volunteer work overseas.

The incoming president (he is sworn in next month) said he while he is looking forward to travelling to Papua New Guinean village of Songut later this year, he is also a little concerned. “The last time I travelled overseas, I never left the resort we stayed in,” Rob said. But he’s expecting to learn a lot. His journey is a fact finding mission for the Beerwah Lions, who hope to be able to contribute to the wonderful work being done in the village in the Southern Highlands by members of the Glasshouse Community Church, lead by pastor Brendan Edwards. “Brendan and the folk from the Glasshouse Community Church have already built a church for the village, and we hope to be able to set up a general store and a school for them,” Rob said. Rob said he felt lucky to be involved in the project, which he expects will become another of the highlights of his time serving as a Lions member. He said one of his priorities when he takes over the reigns as president will be to try and recruit some new, younger members to the club. “At 60 years of age, I am one of the younger members of the club, and we really need to

Pastor Brendan Edwards (left) and Travis (far right) from the Glasshouse Community Church with Pastor Nixon from Songut Village and Rob Greenwood get some new members on board, particularly younger folk with the energy and drive for the enormous scope of community work that the Lions are involved with,” Rob said. Rob said it was inspiring to be part of something like Lions. Like the time Lions was involved with the garden makeover for cancer sufferer Kym Gilbert, who sadly passed away earlier this year. “It was the first community project I had ever been involved with, and I came away from that experience just so proud to be a Lion, and a member of this community.” “There are so many amazing people in this town and being part of Lions has given me the opportunity to meet them and work with them.” For more information on what being a member of the Lions Club is all about, give outgoing president Ken Loveday a call on 0429 960 196 or 5496 0077.

Keep an eye out for our special interview with Pastor Brendan Edwards later this month, when we find out more about all the great work the church is doing in the Songut village.

As we went to print (on Friday 5.00pm), Rick Baberowski was ahead in the count, leading by 862 votes with around 82 per cent of votes counted. Hot on his heels is Bob McLean, and it appears it will be a close battle between the two. And with postal votes closing 6.00pm Tuesday, preference votes aren’t expected to be finalised until later this week, so it’s likely to be a battle to the finish line between Rick and Bob. In Division 5, incumbent councillor Jenny McKay who received 73.29% of first round preferances has been declared the Councillor for Division 5. In the Mayoral stakes, the clear winner is Mark Jamieson. In division one, Mark secured nearly 30 per cent of the first preference vote (with just over 78 per cent counted), followed by Debbie Blumel with just over 17 per cent, and Warren Blee, on 15.3 per Mark Jamieson cent. For all the latest results, keep an eye on the Electoral Commission Queensland’s website www.eqc.qld.gov.au, and our facebook page and website at www.gcnews.com.au, where we’ll bring you the latest news.

Beerwah Place + Project Council considers Beerwah Action Plan After several months of community consultation with the people of Beerwah, a draft Action Plan has been developed for the town. The draft action plan for A Bright Future for Beerwah is now being considered within council before going back to the community in June. Council started talking with the town last year about how to help develop an even brighter future in Beerwah. The information from the community engagement was then divided into themes: Robust Economy, Ecological sustainability, Innovation and Creativity, Health and Wellbeing, Social Cohesion, Accessibility and Connectedness, Managing Growth, and Great Governance. This allowed community focus groups to create the draft Action Plan based on all the great ideas generated by locals. Check out the YouTube video of what the community said about Beerwah at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, via the PLACE+ Beerwah webpage If you want to know more about this great project and the amazing input from your community, come and talk to council staff at the Beerwah Place + stand at the Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo www.gcnews.com.au

Lavally Lodge hosts Monster Bookfest When GCNews visited the residents at Lavally Lodge last week, it was party time. There was cake, party hats, balloons and lollies, and plenty of good cheer to be had. For birthday girl Bernadette, the afternoon’s celebration was highlighted by a special phone call from her sister. Talk moved on to another exciting upcoming event, when the residents will head off down to the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane next week to see the musical ‘Annie’. Lavally Lodge, an initiative of the Caloundra Catholic Parish, provides accommodation and 24 hour support to 10 people with intellectual disability. Coordinator Mary Crase, said while there are no rules or regulations at Lavally Lodge, the emphasis is on mutual respect. “Our aim is to support and encourage the residents to live a satisfying and rewarding life in their spiritual, physical and emotional pursuits,” Mary said. She said residents are treated as individuals, and encouraged to pursue their own interests. One resident Mary Anne, is attending TAFE to complete her certificate in Literacy, while another resident, Karena, travels down to Brisbane on the train during the week, where she is completing her Certificate II in Warehousing.

Nelly loves music, especially when Mary plays the piano, while Bernadette loves bowling, and each week looks forward to her outings when she goes bowling, sometimes with her father. Lavally Lodge receives no government funding, and runs at a deficit of around $100,000 every year, so fundraising is a big deal. This year, following the closure of another Catholic Parish facility, Karingal, Lavally Lodge will this year be the beneficiary of one of the year’s biggest annual fundraisers, the Monster Bookfest. The event, which will be held at the Caloundra Arts and Crafts Centre on Saturday and Sunday July 14 - 15 typically raises around $15,000, and Lavally Lodge is calling on donations of books, CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles to help them achieve this goal. They are also looking for volunteers to help with the running of the bookfest; so if you have some free time, or goods to donate, give Mary a call or drop into Lavally Lodge, at 59 Bowen Road, Glass House Mountains. Mary said the Lodge always welcomes volunteers to help out around the centre with tasks such as cooking and cleaning. For more information about the wonderful work done by the staff and carers at Lavally Lodge, or to help out with the Monster Bookfest, and to make donations, contact Mary at Lavally Lodge on 5496 9403.

From the Schools

Beerburrum’s kitchen garden takes off

From Narelle Hill Beerwah State High correspondent

Slick performers ‘Grease’ it up! The word on the street, or rather the classrooms of Beerwah State High, is … ‘Grease!’ And I’m here to spread that word to the masses. By masses I’m hoping that’s somewhere in the double digits. (I’ve read this article, my parents probably will, currently you are reading it….so that’s four already!) Our school production this year is none other than ‘Grease!’ the musical set in the 50’s. Since the beginning of this year, students and teachers alike have been working themselves into a frenzy in order to deliver a tight performance full of energy, colour, singing and dancing. A result of being thrown together for several fun-filled hours each week to achieve this common goal has resulted in rather pleasant comradery and collaboration among the various school departments. The rehearsal schedule has been strictly adhered to and, for the most part, the rehearsals are spent productively… aside from occasional goofing off (insert our directors, Mrs Holland and Mrs Stephenson good naturedly ‘chiding’, “Guys, attention! C’mon guys, let’s get back to it. Focus guyssssss.”). Right now it’s looking like all the hard work is going to pay off in time for the shows though, so it will all be worth it. ‘Grease’ is $12.00 a ticket and seating is limited, so get in quickly. photo in the PA Centre, one matinee and three There will be fourWord performances evening showings, spanning from Thursday, May 24 to Saturday, May 26. Times are 2.00pm for the Saturday matinee with all other shows, Thursday to Saturday, starting at 7.00pm in the evening. Tickets are on sale from cash collection at Beerwah High School so scrounge around your couch cushions for some change and start preparing yourself for tunes that will be stuck in your heads for days, an obscene amount of strutting and frankly bizarre American colloquialisms (I’m still befuddled by ‘throw your mittens around your kittens’). Basically get ready for all that is ‘Grease!’

Students will be getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food in 2012 at Beerburrum State School. The school is one of 259 schools across Australia to have received funding from the Stephanie Alexander Foundation to establish a kitchen garden. Students will attend weekly lessons in the garden learning how to grow produce which will be harvested for preparation in the kitchen and shared together in the dining room. The school wishes to acknowledge the generosity of local businesses and community groups who have supported the project in its early stages including Bunnings (Morayfield), Beerwah Tyres and Batteries, Moroney’s Landscaping Supplies (Beerwah), Bassett’s Bark, Beerwah Co-op and Beerwah Community Recycling Centre. An information session for parents and local community will be held at the school on Wednesday, May 16 from 3.30pm. A free child minding service will be provided on site. If you are interested in getting involved by donating goods or on a volunteer basis in the garden or kitchen, please come along to find out more about this exciting program. Principal, Mr Neil Harvey said that community participation was integral to the success of the program. “The children will benefit from our input in many, many ways,” he said. Please ring Beerburrum State School on 5496 0134 if you require more information or would like to donate goods or time to the program.

Landsborough State School joins Better Buddies Landsborough State School has joined the Better Buddies Framework to help reduce instances of bullying by creating a friendly and caring atmosphere within the school community. Prep and Year 1 teacher Christine Jorgensen, whose Prep students are participating in the program with buddies in Years 3 and 4, said the program was a great way to help children learn social skills of interaction. “Every week, the Preps spend around half an hour with their older buddies, and its great to see the older children really relishing the opportunity to get to know the younger students,” Ms Jorgensen said. The Alannah and Madeline Foundation introduced the Better Buddies Framework into 30 schools in 2007, and with the support of NAB, have increased the number of participating schools to nearly 1,000 in 2012. Twenty-seven per cent of young people report they are bullied every two weeks or more often. The framework is tailored to reduce this impact by emphasising the importance of friendships. Older children ‘buddy up’ with those in Prep, to

introduce and learn the Better Buddies values of ‘caring for others, friendliness, respect, valuing difference, including others and responsibility’. Ms Jorgensen said Drew and Reagyn the program was tremendously well set out. “It’s wonderful to have the framework and structure there, and it encourages a proactive approach, rather than waiting to react when problems arise,” she said. Major sponsor NAB has provided each new Better Buddies school with a set of purple Buddy Bears, which Ms Jorgensen said have become popular ambassadors for the program. Much more than a riding school

Glasshouse Mountains Riding School is much more than just a place to learn how to ride. As well as offering personal and professional instruction for riders of all ages, the school’s main lesson is to teach children how to be safe around horses through hands on experience. From horsemanship, sporting (games on horseback which is great for confidence, balance and fun), flatwork (how to ride) and jumping, children gain both the confidence and knowledge they need to build a successful relationship with their horse, which ultimately will influence their riding ability. Owner Belinda Short, who has been involved with horses all her life, and who has been the chief instructor at Glasshouse Pony Club for the past 10 years, said her school’s philosophy is that to really learn to ride, you need to understand the horse. “Building the bond between the rider and the horse is much more than the actual ride, which is why we believe it is so important to learn all aspects of our majestic equines,” Belinda said. “You learn how to listen to your horse, watching and feeling its body language and understanding what it means.” Belinda said all of the horses and ponies at the school were safe and reliable, and there are a variety of different lessons and workshops on offer, all at reasonable prices. The school also offers monthly trail rides and holiday camps, and also hires the horses and ponies out to the Pony Club for those who wish to participate in the club’s competition activities. To check out the wide range of lessons available at the Glasshouse Mountains Riding School, located on Yeates Road, and for further information on the school’s philosophy, check out their impressive new website at www.glasshousemountainsridingschool.com.au

While dirt driveways offer home or land owners the benefit of low maintenance, inevitably, there are going to be times when repairs are warranted. When it rains heavily, as it has done here on the Sunshine Coast, gravel driveways can easily become damaged. The gravel can wash away, and become pitted or uneven. According to Mark Cuthel of Moroney’s Landscape Supplies, it is imperative to repair water damage on gravel roads as quickly as possible to prevent accidents. “But it is really important to get the job done properly the first time so that a gravel washout doesn't happen again,” he said. Potholes tend to develop on gravel roads for two main reasons. Either the soil beneath the roadbed shifts, creating a void in the gravel, or the rounded crown of the gravel has levelled off or created a depression, allowing the collection of water. “Either cause has the same repair process,” said Mark. “You have to remove the affected gravel down to the soil beneath and then recreate the roadbed layer by layer, until you round off the top again. This can be time-consuming, but the final result is definitely worth the time, because the newly patched pothole is as strong, and the repair area will last as long as the remaining surface,” Mark said. If your driveway has been left damaged after the rain, you can call Mark on 5494 0100 for a free appraisal, and he can let you know how best to repair your driveway quickly and cost effectively.

Tablets – are they worth all the fuss?

In recent months there has been an explosion in the market in the number of different tablet computers available. So are they really deserving of all the hype? Apple iPad –It’s easy to use, has great battery life and has an enormous amount of Apps that can be easily downloaded directly onto the device from the App Store. The latest version, the 'New' iPad has only recently been released and its 'Retina Display' means you get a screen that offers fantastic quality when viewing movies/ photos and more. The iPad is not designed to be a replacement for a normal notebook or desktop computer. For example, it does not have USB ports or cd drives. If you are thinking of getting an iPad to use for home, school or work and you don’t have another computer as well – I would urge you to consider one of the alternative tablets below. Both of the next 2 tablets run on Google’s Android operating system. Samsung Galaxy Tab – this was the tablet that Apple tried to prevent Samsung from selling in Australia. If you want faster web browsing, there is a 4G model available (unlike the iPad which is NOT 4G). If you are 'anti apple' this is the tablet for you! Available in two sizes, it’s a great option. Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime – a VERY cool tablet! The docking station option (read: proper keyboard!) makes it a superb choice for power users who want a tablet that can be used effectively as a business tool every day. This tablet offers high performance at a good price. There are also some great tablets on the market from Toshiba, Sony and Lenovo. With the release of the touch screen inspired Windows 8 in the very near future, expect to see some new Windows 8 based tablets released in the coming months that will give the Apple iPad some heavy competition!

The game has changed So far this year we’ve been covering the various ways in which you can make the most out of your website, for your business. Today we embark on a new topic: recent changes in prominent websites which may affect your business. The internet and associated technologies have, in the last 15 years, come from nothing to be our almost everything! Back then, your internet provider charged you an hourly rate for your dial-up connection, and if a webpage wasn’t simply a grey background with some text and a picture or two, it was extraordinary. Not surprising then that the internet is still constantly changing - not only are new sites popping up every day, but existing sites are shifting, shaking, moving, improving and whether it’s a help or a hindrance - these changes do affect our online business presence. As a web development and marketing specialist, one of the changes that has affected me the most in recent times is Google’s decision not to pay attention to the 'keywords' metadata in your website any more. This is the list of keywords behind the scenes on each page of your site. Google felt that this data was being manipulated by website owners to give off false impressions, so now they just don’t pay any attention. If you’ve spent hours trying to get just the right keywords behind the scenes in your website, I’m sorry. But don’t despair... just grab your list of words and start placing them in amongst your actual website text, as Google still definitely DOES look at the user-viewable content of your individual pages. In fact, don’t go scrapping the actual keywords metadata itself just yet as there are many other search engines out there, some of which do still take keywords metadata into consideration. (to be continued...)

an evolution of Fylesoft Pty Ltd

Develop an average working week by Rod Richards, Richards Consulting Pty Ltd www.richardsconsulting.com.au Routine is an important part of everyday business life. To get all our tasks completed we need to create new disciplines and that involves developing an average working week. So here is the exercise, write down every task that you do every day of the week. It’s not a wish list, so write down every task you undertake for every day of the week. Next step is to review the week and assess where the time is being spent. Is it being spent in the most productive way? The next step is to plan the week - these are all the routine tasks that occur through the week. You will soon see what has to be changed. Try the new routine for a month and see if it’s better than the old one. Obviously if it doesn’t work after a week or two, change accordingly. I always look at billable hours compared to non-billable hours. The KEY is to use our time the most productively and to improve our efficiencies in the business. Routine is very important in getting everything completed.

National Volunteer Week thanks

Vision Australia is proud to celebrate the valuable contribution of our many volunteers during National Volunteer Week in May. It is an important opportunity to reflect on the hours and hours of precious time that each and every volunteer gives freely to our organisation. It is true to say that without their support we would not be able to provide the range and breadth of services that we offer so many Australians who are blind or have low vision. The National Volunteer Week theme this year is Every One Counts. I think the theme is particularly apt because every individual volunteer certainly does count. During the past 12 months, we have welcomed another 664 volunteers into the Vision Australia family. We now have a total of 4,600 people who volunteer to help others through our organisation. On behalf of Vision Australia, I would like to thank each and every person who has given their time to help us make a difference in the lives of people who are blind or have low vision. Our thanks goes to you, not only during this month of May, but in every other month of the year as well.

Gerard Menses Chief Executive Officer

The Resourcefulness of a Bygone Age Many items in the Bankfoot House collection show the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the occupants of the house during the years since it was established by William and Mary Ferris in 1868. Family members re-used objects in different ways and often made useful new things out of old. Nothing was wasted. When the original house of 1868 was pulled down, all the sound pieces of timber were re-used in building an extension onto the other house, that had been built in 1878. Bricks from the old chimney were used to build a fireplace for the copper behind the laundry. When the base of a glass sugar bowl broke, a makeshift timber base was fashioned and attached to the bowl, enabling the sugar bowl to be used for many more years. A ‘tea cosy’ was made out of an older metal teapot and still sits on a teapot in the collection, alongside a hand14

With thanks

My deepest and sincere thanks go to the people who supported me in my recent bid for Council. It has been a wonderful experience, and as a result, I have become a stronger and wiser individual. During the election campaign I attended the ANZAC Day service at the Beerwah RSL and it was great to see so many in attendance and so many locals, especially our younger generation, paying their respects. My grandfather fought at Gallipoli and the Western Front and both my parents enlisted in the services at the outbreak of World War II, with my father serving overseas so throughout my life, since the age of six, I have attended dawn services and marches and have encouraged my children to do the same. Unfortunately I have since heard complaints circulating about the display of my campaign material in the vicinity of the Beerwah RSL on Anzac Day. I would like to clarify for those who took offence that the person responsible for parking his vehicle and trailer in Beerwah Parade (a returned serviceman) did so of his own volition in order to attend the service. I drove to the ceremony and parked my signed election vehicle at the northern end of Swan Street, well out of view of the proceedings. I apologise to anyone who was offended, as it was unintentional.

Signage Grant for Crystal Waters

Crystal Waters Community Co-operative has gratefully received a Community Development Grant from the Sunshine Coast Council to develop signage to enhance the experience of visiting Crystal Waters. Crystal Waters is well-known to many interstate and overseas visitors as a result of its connections to permaculture and eco village networks. The property is primarily residential, and when visitors arrive without notice there may be no-one to greet or direct them. We want visitors to enjoy their experience, and to easily find their accommodation and information pertinent to their stay. We aim for unplanned visitors to have the best possible access to the facilities they want, both in and around Crystal Waters. Rob Clarke is a local artist and sign writer with many years experience and connections with community in and around Maleny. We are delighted to have Rob’s assistance in bringing this exciting project to fruition through a series of free workshops with the community, starting with a community consultation workshop on the overall design, content and location of the sign to be erected on the Village Green. This will be held on the Deck at Crystal Waters on Saturday, May 12 at 11.00am. If you are interested in being involved in any of the stages of the project (design, painting, construction, installation) please come along to this initial session. To register your interest, please give me a call on 5494 4590, or email facilities@crystalwaters.org.au

A birthday wish come true! Courtesy of Glasshouse Country Unting Church made, metal cake tin. Descendant Bill Ferris said he used decking from the old Rose Creek bridge on Beerburrum Road to construct a car ramp in the grounds that still stands. The address of Bankfoot House is 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains. The Open Day on May 27 will celebrate the 100th anniversary of an amazing feat by the Clark sisters of Brisbane. On the Empire Day weekend in 1912 these young women rode their bikes from Brisbane to Bankfoot House along Gympie Road and climbed two of the Glasshouse Mountains before riding their bikes back to Brisbane. Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland, Mrs Penny Wensley, and her husband Mr McCosker will attend the Open Day. There will also be descendants of the Clark sisters, recreational cyclists, pennyfarthings, historic photos, a decorated bike competition and lots more. Entry is free and everyone is welcome. For further information contact Friends of Bankfoot House. The email address is friends@ bankfoothouse.org

Four-year-old Lucas Terrey of Landsborough had plenty of reasons to smile when he celebrated his birthday recently, thanks to his dad David, who recently won a copy of ‘Tall but True Tractor Tales’ by Peachester local, Dr Graeme Quick in a recent GCNews competition. Apparently, Lucas is just mad about tractors, and by the look of this photo, he is certainly intent on learning all he can about them.

Community Group Updates Peachester CWA Contributed by Coral Beutel

At our meeting on March 29, visitor Margarita PrioriSmith asked our branch if we would assist with the catering and organising of a jewellery auction for cancer in the Peachester Hall on Sunday, August 19. We agreed of course. Our meeting last Tuesday was very interesting with Lidia Cruz advising us on the food for our international day on May 29. The country we are studying is Chile, so if you would like to ‘check out Chile’ let me know for catering. Among our donations given was $100.00 to the Peachester State School for their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. Last Saturday Margaret and Sharon Wild judged the last of our cooking competition, including cakes and jams etc which were sold at the most successful markets we have had. It was lovely to see friends enjoying morning tea together after voting.

The results of the cooking is as follows:- Lemon Cake 1st Joan Kropp, 2nd Coral Beutel. Steamed pudding 1st Joan Kropp. Sultana Cake 1st Joan Kropp, 2nd Cath Howitt . Rich Fruit Cake 1st Bev Wild, 2nd Joan Kropp. Orange Bar 1st Joan Kropp, 2nd Margaret Wallace. Any other cake 1st Cath Howitt, 2nd Joan Kropp. Jam 1st Passion fruit Coral Beutel, 2nd Guava Bev Wild, Marmalade Bev Wild. Chutney 1st Coral Beutel. Any Relish 1st Coral Beutel. Anyone can enter our competitions following the schedules which can be obtained from Coral. On June 7 will be the judging of knitting and crochet, floral art and photography. Thank you to the public who made our long day last Saturday well worth the effort. Our next markets will be on Saturday, June 30 from 1.00pm – 5.00pm. Anyone who is interested in having a stall please let Joan Kropp know on 5494 9521 or Coral Beutel 5494 9775.

A Welcome to Harmony Contributed by Bruce Lamming Nigel Davenport, second from the left, is a bass singer with the Sunshine Statesmen and is from Glass House Mountains. He is assisting three new members of the chorus to sing as a barbershop quartet for the first time. The three new members are, from left to right, Clive Holden a baritone from Peregian Springs, Ted Gibbs a lead singer from Little Mountain and Graham Kingsford a tenor from Aroona. The latter three, together with several others, completed the Chorus’ free voice-coaching program as recently as mid March and, despite coming from different locations, are enjoying bringing their voices together in harmony.

Birdwing Butterfly vines will be available at the next Glass House Mountains Market on May 13. All proceeds will be donated to the Koala Rescue group. Please come along and support the wonderful work of Ray and Murray Chambers who are on call 24-7 to help these precious symbols of Australian wildlife. Donations can also be made on the day or by phoning Murray Chambers 0431 300 729.

MAY 9 2012

On Wednesday, May 2, our lowest attendance of the year, just six ladies and one dog, braved the wet weather for morning tea at the Glasshouse Mountain Lookout. Despite the inclement weather we had a most enjoyable time. Olwyn Kerr from the Guide Dogs Association will be the speaker at our next meeting at 11.00am for 11.30am on Wednesday, May 16 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Complete with guide dog we expect Olwyn to provide a very interesting session. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply further information. View clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support.

GMAN Plant Sale to Aid Koala Rescue The members of Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) have always been concerned for the plight of koalas. The recent listing of the species as ‘vulnerable’, and the plea from the Sunshine Coast Koala rescue unit to raise funds for a new vehicle, inspired GMAN members to assist in some way. President John Innes welcomed all present to the April meeting. John and Pam Innes recently toured New Zealand and both spoke about some of the highlights of their trip. The guided tour of Christchurch showed the terrible damage inflicted by the earthquakes, much worse than photos can depict. Pam commented that the north island is much different than the south island. Results of the competition bench for March, first Margaret Ferris, second Coral Beutel. After lunch many members visited Italo and Noela Frizzo’s orchid nursery. ‘Wow,’ words just can’t describe the impact of so many orchids, the incredible range of colours of the ones in flower was quite amazing. A big thank you to Italo and Noela for showing us around and for their patience in answering the many questions asked and information freely given. An enjoyable outing. The next meeting will be on Thursday, May 17, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. After the meeting we will be visiting a garden. More information later. Visitors are always welcome. Children’s or babies consultations will include questioning and understanding about pregnancy time, birthing, feeding, environment, and family genetics as well. dispensed in water and tastes like water. I often find that children really do love taking the medicine. Follow up visits are always a good thing to do, especially in the beginning of treatment to ensure all is on track. Usually once a foundation has been set, mothers bring their children in with symptoms such as colds, flu’s, sprains, bruises, coughs plus other ailments; here I allow half hour treatments. For the remainder of the year I have made special pricing for children so that it is more affordable for their health and well being. Living Well 138 more Sunshine Coast hosts needed to join tea party With its month-long tea party now officially underway, Cancer Council Queensland has launched its final push to recruit Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea hosts for 2012. May is Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea time and there’s never been a better excuse to switch the kettle on, tea up your friends, family and workmates and help tip the balance in the fight against cancer. All you need to do is sign on to host an event during May and start planning! Visit www.biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85 to find out more. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Tenille Koeter said it isn’t too late to make your cuppa count in the fight against cancer this May. “Each year around 21,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer and sadly, around 7,500 Queenslanders will die from the disease. “We need 138 more Sunshine Coast locals to register to host a morning tea this month to help us reach our goal of raising $222,000 in the region in 2012,” she said. All funds raised from Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea support Cancer Council’s vital work in cancer research, education programs and patient support services. “I encourage everyone to put the kettle on this May and support the one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85.” Thursday, May 24 is the official date of Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, however morning teas can be held any time throughout May or early June. So go on, switch the kettle on, make a cuppa and make a difference to those affected by cancer. Crafty locals are also encouraged to get their needles working overtime and knit the official tea cosy pattern, designed by Queensland’s own Queen of the Tea Cosies Loani Prior, to show off at their events this May. The official tea cosy pattern is suitable for knitters of all abilities and is available free for download at www.grandpurlbaa.com. Cancer Council Queensland is an independent, community-based charity. The achievements of Cancer Council Queensland are made possible by the generosity of Queenslanders.

The Happy Mum With Jackie Hall ‘Today was an overwhelming day. That is all... No really, that is all. It doesn't mean that I’m a bad mother. It doesn't mean that I am a failure. It doesn't mean that I am not good enough. It just means that in the grand scheme of my life, where I will inevitably experience both enjoyable and not enjoyable times, this day was just one of those days where some things just didn't go to plan.’ Sometimes it is easy to become consumed by all the ‘wrong’ things that are going on in your life, especially if you are a new mum adjusting to the chaos that motherhood can bring, but it’s important to keep a healthy perspective on the situation. The reality of motherhood is that just like any other period of your life, you will come across days where you are organised, reach your goals and everything is going to plan, and there will be other days where you have no idea what you are doing, everything is going wrong and you

feel completely hopeless. These moments are not a reflection of your life and are certainly no reflection on your value as a mother. You are still a human being who is learning and doing the best they can and motherhood is just a new skill that you are learning to do, no different from learning a new job. Motherhood comes with highs and lows, but when you focus on only the lows you will find more evidence of them being there, because that’s where your attention is. So next time you experience unplanned events, widen back and look for something you have achieved, what did go right and something you learnt from the unwanted experiences. For when you do this you will see that the lows are only a part of motherhood, not ALL of the motherhood experience.

Raising funds for Cadence Foundation

Mystical magical night at Club Glasshouse

When Claire Carney of Beerwah decided to celebrate her 50th birthday at Club Glasshouse last month, it was certainly a night to remember, when the venue’s staff joined the 120 guests in dressing up in the theme of the night.

Last week, Friends of Beerwah Library hosted a fundraising morning tea for the Cadence Foundation, in aid of Cadence Henry. One of the Friends of the Library donated two bears, one of which was raffled off, and the other given to Cadence, while Courtney from Mrs Brown’s Bakery at the Beerwah Marketplace, generously donated the cupcakes for the event, which raised over $70.00.

Craypot Stinkhorn

On a recent walk along Fullerton Road my wife and I spotted these extremely interesting fungi amid the trees at the front of our estate. Very phallic, some of them, but interesting none the less. Nature at its creative best. Could any of your readers shed some light on these, or have we discovered a new species? Love the GCNews. Terry and Mandy Moore Crinoline Stinkhorn Beerwah In fact, GCNews can let you know that what you’ve found are from the Stinkhorn group of fungi. They use a putrid smell to attract flies and other insects to help spread their spore around. The first one is called Phallus multicolour (also called Crinoline Stinkhorn) and the second is Colus pusillus (sometimes called Craypot Stinkhorn). They are fairly common in the area but don’t last long above the ground so aren’t often seen by people. Wonderful photo’s of some of our more unusual local species.

Australia’s most passionate edible landscaper and iconic host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, Costa Georgiadis, will MC the 2012 Living Smart Glossies Awards on June 15. The awards recognise and celebrate the sustainability achievements of Sunshine Coast residents, businesses and community groups in building design, construction, edible landscaping, transport and resource management. Costa’s fame as a landscape architect rose over the past three years in line with the popularity of Costa’s Garden Odyssey on SBS, but his appeal has skyrocketed this year with his appointment as host of Gardening Australia. The Living Smart Awards, now in their eighth year, are a highlight on the region’s annual calendar and council anticipates that having Costa as the MC will ensure that this year’s event is the most successful yet. Award categories open for self nomination include the Golden Glossy – Excellence in Sustainable Design Award, Resource Saver Award, Sustainable Transport Award, Living Smart Solutions Award, Affordable Living Award, Enviro-Business Award, and Greening the Arts Award. Visit www. livingsmartqld.com.au for more information or to nominate. PLANT OF THE MONTH

Mischarytera lautereriana - Corduroy Tamarind

This gorgeous small to medium sized tree is fabulous and lends itself to many applications. It can be used as a specimen tree in your garden; in addition it is a great screen and edge species. Naturally occurring north from Mount Glorious it can be identified by its stunning new red growth. The leaflets could be described a looking ‘fern-like’ in appearance, with wavy margins, strong lateral veins and are bright green and glossy. The small fragrant flowers are in separate male and female sprays and are often at the end of the branchlets, usually flowering in spring. The yellow to orange coloured 1 - 3 lobed fruit contain a black seed which is completely enclosed in an edible clear juicy flesh, which is quite tart to the taste. This tree is an attractive ornamental and copes with a variety of soil types. It prefers a bit of moisture, as with most rainforest species likes a lot of compost, and tolerates light frost, making it a very versatile addition to any garden.

Veggie Garden Self Watering Wick System MRWL team and Green Army participants did a hands-on workshop building an above ground, no-dig self watering vegetable garden at the Mooloolah Native Nursery. Green Army participants were very enthusiastic about the project and have even taken veggie seedlings home to plant. The veggie gardens will provide salad ingredients for staff, Green Army and volunteers. We are also making a garden for Mooloolah Primary School, Leadership group to grow fresh food for their tuckshop. You don’t even have to install a watering system, these gardens water themselves from a pipe inserted into the garden. Come into the nursery and have a look, see how well the vegetables are growing. We are asking for expressions of interest for the following workshops (1) Making an above ground veggie garden – no watering wick method, (2) How to build a habitat frog pond and (3)

Plant identification workshop – understand the identification process. All workshops will be $20.00 pp. which will include morning tea and single membership. Please ring 5494 5074 to show your interest in one or more of these great workshops. Happenings in the Nursery It was very sad to see Amber go, I am sure that we will see her again after she has her little one and look forward to working with her at a later date. No doubt we will miss her enthusiasm and knowledge of plants. We all at MRWL wish her all the very best for all future endeavours. Heather, Jesse and I are madly getting ready for winter, getting the plants fertilised and out into the sunshine so that they can grow, grow, grow. Autumn is a great time to plant due to the harshness of the sun decreasing. When all the cleanup has been done then planting can commence, and the few showers that are about help after they have been watered in when planted. Also at this time of year with an eye to the future, spring season planning can occur for future plantings and maintenance. I realise that it seems that it is nothing but work in revegetating your property but I have found with time and a little ‘gumption’ a lot can be achieved. So please come in and visit, our plants are starting to look fabulous and need a new home! We have a great team here that are willing to assist: whether you are on a house block or vast rural holding, we can help you with all aspects of planting.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church Recently, my friend Jake from South Africa came to our church and he saw on the walls of the RSL in Glasshouse where we meet, large displays of medals won by diggers who served in the various campaigns throughout the years. Along the wall further are the faces of our locals who served and a little further along from these pictures, an honour board of those who perished in battle. Jake noted that each of these men and women that received a medal, never knew that this potential medal was inside them, until they faced a time of testing on the battlefield. They would not know how they would respond until they were themselves in the line of fire. Would they sacrifice their own safety and defend their friends, or shrink back and look after themselves? The message of Christ as told in the Bible, is a message that explains that there is a potential medal inside each of us. While we may never face a time of testing quite like those on the battlefield

we honour today, never the less we can choose whether we live a live of self sacrifice to serve those around us, or a self centered life where we merely look after ourselves. My little brother Joel Edwards, returned from his Afghanistan tour with a new lease of life, he now lives like each day counts, where each day is a gift, and an opportunity to live a life in service to God and others around him. This is my challenge to you today. This is God’s challenge to us. Let’s not shrink back but submit ourselves under Jesus, our ranking officer, and live life to the fullest under his direction. His own words are, ‘No man has greater love than this, then he that would lay down his life for his friends.’ He has done this for us. Will you live by this example and live each day like an ANZAC? See you in Church Brendan

Home and Property Guide The decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia to cut the cash rate by 50 basis points to 3.75 per cent is long overdue, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). Many sectors -- particularly real estate, retail, tourism and construction - have been hurting for a number of months but it appears it was only last week, following the release of unexpectedly low inflation figures, that the data began to catch up with the economic reality. REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said the low inflation result had given the Reserve plenty of room to move. “Last week’s rate cut is great news for everyone working in the Queensland real estate sector with the market just starting to show signs of improvement following a particularly difficult 2011,’’ he said. “The Reserve had previously indicated that if inflation in the March quarter was contained -

and it is certainly that - then it would be in a position to lower the cash rate. “It is also likely the Reserve has cut the cash rate by 50 basis points as a way of unwinding some of the independent increases by lenders of late as well as to ensure that a meaningful reduction is passed on - something which unfortunately is not guaranteed anymore.’’ The interest rate reduction is also timely given data released last week showed that the number of new detached house sales in Queensland dropped by 15.3 per cent in March - a concerning statistic to come to light on the same day that the Queensland Building Boost expired. “It is imperative that lenders pass on this rate cut in its entirety to help restore economic activity and confidence levels. Indeed, lenders’ continual excuses about higher funding costs are not only starting to sound very stale but also increasingly self-interested,” Mr Kardash said.

Following the recent release of the Queensland State Government’s Statutory Land Valuations, property experts are urging property owners to act quickly if they are planning to object to their valuation. Property owners have until May 28 to lodge a formal objection against the valuations conducted by the Queensland State Government through the Department of Environment and Resource Management. The valuations are used by state and local governments to determine land tax and local government rates. The valuations do not take into account structural improvements to land such as buildings, pools and fencing. Propell National Valuers CEO Bart Mead said property owners often faced a difficult decision when considering whether to lodge an objection. “In our experience, the majority of land valuations are fairly accurate but there are some exceptions. “Property prices have fallen in many areas across Queensland in recent years which may contribute to some properties being overvalued. “Property owners must weigh up potential savings in rates and land tax against the time and effort involved in contesting a valuation and the possibility of it being unsuccessful,” he said. Jim Webster, Commercial Valuer at Propell National Valuers, said those considering lodging an objection may benefit from gaining advice from a suitably qualified property valuer. “Property owners can engage a valuer to undertake preliminary research to determine the potential merits of an objection. “A valuer should be able to establish whether there are sufficient grounds for an objection and potentially save you the time and energy pursuing a futile objection.” Mr Webster said a valuer could provide a property owner with assistance in compiling an objection. “When you are launching an objection, having a valuer onside can lend significant credibility to your argument,” he said.

They have two children and a credit card limit of $8,000 and hope to borrow $500,000 towards their new home. The 25 lenders on Smartline’s panel would lend the Ransleys a range of different amounts, from approximately $457,000 to $561,000. Some of the lenders would decline the loan, but several are willing to lend more. Smartline reviewed all the options and highlight the lenders that would view the Ransleys favourably.

News in Brief ATO warns investors about tax avoidance schemes The ATO has warned taxpayers to steer clear of tax avoidance schemes as they prepare to lodge their 2012 tax returns. "It is at this time of year we see an increase in the number of tax avoidance schemes being promoted," Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo said. “Modern tax schemes can be very sophisticated and may masquerade as complex investments or other arrangements that can appeal even to experienced investors.” Just like genuine investments, these schemes might promise you 'wealth creation' or financial security. Others can exploit your social or environmental conscience by promising you large up-front tax deductions for donations to charity or 'green initiatives'. Many are marketed via social media or glossy promotional brochures, with offers of exclusivity and the stamp of approval from so-called 'experts'. "As appealing as an investment opportunity may sound, sometimes the promised tax benefits might not be available under the law," Mr D'Ascenzo explained. If you're considering entering into an arrangement that will affect your tax liabilities, it's important to carefully investigate and understand the tax consequences before making your investment decision. Not getting the right information and advice can lead to a large tax debt, including substantial penalties and interest. "Doing your research and seeking independent financial and tax advice from someone not involved with the arrangement before investing is your best protection against promoters of tax avoidance schemes, or alternatively you can make an enquiry with the ATO," Mr D'Ascenzo advised. To help taxpayers, the ATO has partnered with Paul Clitheroe, Chairman of the Federal Government’s Consumer and Financial Literacy Taskforce and respected financial commentator, to produce a YouTube video which highlights the pitfalls of getting caught in a tax avoidance scheme and provides some helpful tips for taxpayers. The ATO website also has information about some of the more common tax schemes and emerging arrangements in easy-to-understand language. It also provides information on what people can do if they've been caught up in a scheme. “Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” Mr D'Ascenzo said. For more information visit www.ato.gov.au/ taxplanning To view the video featuring Paul Clitheroe, go to www.youtube.com/AusTaxOffice

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Jenny Kelly

The sun may have been shining however the course was very wet for the 29 players who came out on Thursday to compete in our Monthly Medal. The girls competed for a wonderful prize donated once again by our Club Professional, John Mellish. The winner of 1st Division with a 79 Nett was Andrea Campbell with a score of 79. Runner up was Sonia Kenway, with Barb Whitfield having the best Gross score. Jennifer Kelly took out 2nd. Division with a score of 75 Nett. Kaye Jansen was Runner Up and Hope Hannah won the Gross. Carol Fraser won 3rd Division with a 92 Nett, Ruth Parish was Runner Up and Gayle Murphy won the Gross. NTP's were Andrea on 2, Barb on 5, Lea Garner on 16 and Jen got the 18th. I sound like a broken record, but we are hoping for a much drier track next week. Till then, stay safe and good golfing.

Tuesday, May 1 - we welcomed back Ede Clark after 12 months away with ill health. It was only a social game but she has lost none of her touch. Friday 4th winners were Rob Hall and Kev Jenner

Mooloolah Soccer Club

Contributed by Sian Mountney

After lots of rainy weather it was great to see the kids back out on the fields this weekend. This week we want to highlight a team that under adversity rose to the challenge and played a really good game. The Under 10 Falcons played at Immanuel and they only had 9 players. One of them, Lachlan Handford could not run or kick so he went in goals. The Falcons went down 1 - 0 in the opening minutes but that is when they started to play. Holding their shape, and playing as a team, they quickly responded with a well taken goal from Lochlan Smith. missed chances. The opposition had 5 subs but in the second half the Falcons dug deep and played great attacking soccer, backed up with some great defence by Luca Ferrousat, Jack White, Jack King and Nick Shepherd. The backs quick distribution and the skills of their central midfielder Trent Rowlands quickly created great attacking opportunities which left the fulltime score at 9 - 1 with further goals from Lochlan Smith(3), Trent Rowlands(3), Owen Mountney(2) and Zane Moore(1). The Immanuel team played well but the Falcons kept their shape, played their positions and took their chances well. This was a great team effort and the coach, manager and families watching are very proud of their efforts and there never give up attitude. Well played Falcons.

The old man placed an order for one hamburger, french fries and a drink. He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the french fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink; his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking, that poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them. As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old

couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said “no, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.” Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked “what is it you are waiting for?” She answered –“the teeth.” Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
