ell, as you are aware, we have been counting down the editions until Christmas since 10 weeks out and, as this is featured prominently on the cover, there shouldn't be any surprise. But hey, let’s face it those last couple of weeks at the end do get crazy busy for many of us. So I thought I should just use this opportunity for one last polite reminder – that if you have a story you would like included in the paper before Christmas – then please send it as soon as possible. The final edition of the year will be delivered one day earlier than you usually receive it. This means that the final deadline will be 5.00pm on Wednesday, December 16. Then the first paper back in January is January 20, so Team GC&M News are really looking forward to a three week holiday. This is what we always do, but it can still come as a shock to quite a few of our avid readers and when we return from holidays there are quite a few phone messages from outraged people who haven’t had their papers delivered! We are sorry to disappoint, but we really need this time to recharge the batteries and get our happy faces on before starting 2016. Regards,

While the kids and the carers that attend the Peachester Playgroup have always known what a great group and co-ordinator they have, this was recently officially recognised. This year’s co-coordinator Bec Morgan was recognised by the Queensland Playgroup as the Queensland’s Contact Person of the year for 2015, and the group shared the title of ‘Playgroup of the Year 2015’ with two other groups. The group have had their own shed and play area at the back of the Peachester Hall for over 20 years. One of Bec’s goals as this year’s co-ordinator, was to get funding to renovate the building to make it a more usable and

Bec Morgan receives her certificate from Peachester local Michelle Poole who was previously a coordinator of the Peachester Playgroup and now works for Playgroup Queensland comfortable facility, which she has done. The group just love the results, including Bec’s mum Shirley Bell who was the co-ordinator who originally got the funding to build the shed. So the two decade long project has clearly been a family affair. The playgroup meet each Tuesday morning during the school term from 9.15am to 11.15am, parents are asked to bring a water bottle and a piece of fruit to be cut up for a shared morning tea. Attendance costs $3.00 per week (to cover cost of craft activities) as well as an annual joining fee of $40.00 for each family or $30.00 concession. If you would like to go, just head along, or to know more contact the 2016 Co-ordinator Krysty on 0400 175 134.

Partnership to improve water quality for Sunshine Coast Last Friday Seqwater and Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group (LBCCG) formalised a new partnership agreement to improve water quality for the Sunshine Coast.

Under the agreement, Seqwater is funding the LBCCG to deliver projects designed to better protect the Lake Baroon catchment. Seqwater Chief Executive Officer, Peter Dennis, said the catchment was critical to the region’s water supply as Lake Baroon was one of South East Queensland’s 12 key water storages and the largest water source on the Sunshine Coast. “We enjoy high rainfall in this catchment which is excellent for water supply but can provide challenges such as landslides. Intense rainfall and steep landscapes can result in contaminants being washed from the catchment into our water storage,” Mr Dennis said. “The increasing amount of sediment and nutrients entering our waterways are key issues affecting overall water quality, making it more difficult and costly to treat. “Working with LBCCG and their passionate members has proven to be an excellent way to enhance our catchment health. The dedicated people in this group have a detailed knowledgeof the catchment and strong relationships with stakeholders which enable them to deliver important projects.”

Mr Dennis said, "With our current agreement due to expire shortly we were keen to engage the catchment care group to ensure we could continue to work together to identify and target priority projects for the catchment. “This funding agreement is about empowering the LBCCG to manage their resources with wide ranging benefits for the community, including improved water quality," he said. Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group President Peter Stevens said the partnership was fundamental to their success in the catchment. “We are pleased Seqwater recognises that community groups have a role to play in catchment management and has renewed our successful partnership. We hope this will lead to further agreements with other groups in the region,” Mr Stevens said.

Kindness appreciated Many local businesses and community organisations were surprised and impressed when Glasshouse Christian College students arrived on the ‘Blessings Bus’. They called in to spread joy and good will last Wednesday, and they also included us here at the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News office. And judging by the number of calls and emails we received, and Facebook messages we saw, we were definitely not alone in our appreciation of the gesture. Glasshouse Christian College teacher Tanya Cullen said the students thoroughly enjoyed the activity and it was a great opportunity for them to see how it takes just one small act of kindness; just one small pebble in a pond, to start a ripple effect. “They may never know how big the ripples were or how far they spread,” she said. The initiative was called 'Random Acts of Kindness' and it will certainly become an annual event for the last week of school. It started off with around 70 students and 10 staff involved in the two-day activity. The 'Blessings Bus' was one of the ways that GCC were able to bless the community and show their appreciation for the support the community has given them. The bus travelled to the Glass House State School and Visitor Information Centre, to Landsborough, calling in to the Museum and Landsborough State School, and Landsborough

Police Station (unfortunately no-one was there to receive their gift). In Beerwah they blessed the Police, Ambulance, Library, Refuse Centre, BADYAC, Swimming Pool, Primary and High Schools, Glasshouse Views and Beerwah Train Station. Another group of students performed drama and music items for the day visitors at Glasshouse Country Care. They also gave visitors and the staff a small plate of Christmas goodies, a handmade Christmas card, and a Christmas tree ornament. The third group walked the streets of Beerwah and blessed about 100 businesses in the main streets. These businesses received a beautifully wrapped plate of Christmas goodies with a handmade card to go with it. All of the items were handmade the day before and it was allhands-on-deck to meet the numbers of gifts. Kylie Cherry from Beerwah Stationery said she was very impressed. “I have just had three students from Glasshouse Christian College come into the shop and give me a little gift of sweets beautifully wrapped with a Christmas card thanking me for my contribution to the community,” she said. “This was such a thoughtful and generous act of kindness and ‘pay it forward’ gesture which was well received and much appreciated. “The young man who addressed me was extremely well spoken and very genuine in his Christmas wishes, so refreshing to see such a polite young man. This has made my day!” Kylie said.

Nicole Theunissen and Shalee Burton prepare one of the gingerbread house gifts And apparently down at BADYAC,upon receiving their gingerbread house, they immediately suggested that they give their house to a family in need for Christmas. The ripple effect is beginning already. “It was so beautiful, and we were all very touched,” said BADYAC Youth Worker, Holly Aston. The Christian College sincerely hope the community has a blessed Christmas and that the ripples they started keep on going throughout the community.

At the end of last month, a gala dinner and award night was held on the Gold Coast by the McKenzie Aged Care Group. The event celebrated the achievements of both the staff and volunteers of the family owned Australian business which manages 15 aged care communities throughout Australia. Local Beerwah resident, Fred Carr took out the top volunteer award from facilities throughout Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales and was recognised as ‘Volunteer of the Year 2015’ for the outstanding contribution of his work with Glasshouse Views. While Fred was the one to recieve the award he credits the support of his wife Joyce for what he has been able to achieve since they both began volunteering at Glasshouse Views in 2006. Their property is located next to the aged care home and both Fred and Joyce have now been an integral part of the Beerwah aged care community for nearly 10 years. Fred and Joyce have been tireless in their involvement and can be credited with a long list of activities including: Fred taking a weekly group Quiz since 2006, being the Men’s club leader, and being the enthusiastic instigator of the popular weekly laughter exercise class. Fred never shies away from a good theme day and has been known to embrace a number of dress-up day themes with gusto which is great fun for all the residents. Over the years he has provided a long list of activities to enhance the community spirit at the facility. He is a muchappreciated volunteer who is loved by all for his

happy personality, reliability, devotion and hard work. Fred and Joyce have also been pivotal in the notfor-profit group ‘Friends of Eden’ which supports the facility in community fundraising activities. From when the group was incorporated in 2009, until quite recently, Fred was the president. One of the highlights of the awards dinner was Fred, when presented with his volunteer of the year award, leading the entire room in a rendition of ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ as he uses this in the laughter exercise classes he conducts. “The McKenzie Aged care group values and recognises the role volunteers play within our facilities,” said Residential Services Manager Cathy Johnson. “While Fred’s commitment really stands out, we are blessed with a great team of volunteers making a difference in so many ways every day.”

In a great sporting achievement for a local Beerwah High student, Amalee McClellan has been selected to represent Australia in the World Cup for Oz Tag. GC&M News caught up the Year 11 student ahead of the World Cup Event which was held at Sunshine Coast Stadium from December 3-6. The World Cup is held every three years with competitors from around the globe competing in different divisions. Amalee was selected for the under 16 girls division along with three other Queensland girls. Oz Tag is an accessible recreational sport that suits every skill and fitness level. It is a nontackling version of rugby league with a maximum of eight players on the field at any one time, and is played throughout the year in three seasons. Amalee has been playing Oz Tag for nearly seven years and is excited to be representing Australia in her chosen sport. She currently trains twice a week in season and plays for the local Oz tag venue at Caloundra. In an indication of the growing popularity of the sport, when Oz Tag commenced at the Caloundra venue in 2009, there were 24 junior teams - this season saw an incredible 125 teams competing! To reach the World Cup level of competition has taken many years of dedication and effort. Every year, the various venues around the State send teams in the different divisions to compete against each other and a State Cup is held

annually. A Queensland team representing the various divisions plays against interstate teams in a ‘State of Origin’ type series and result in the National Championships which are held in Coffs Harbour. The World Cup Team was picked last year at the Championships, allowing nearly 12 months in preparation for the International tournament, including interstate training, and numerous fundraising ventures. Speaking to Amalee’s coach Leigh de Jersey, he reiterated the incredible journey that Amalee has undertaken to get to this International level. “This has definitely been one of Amalee’s long term goals having played for Queensland for the last five years and she is thrilled to have made the Australian team,” he said.

Maleny storage facility Time is running out to starts construction nominate a local hero Major earthworks behind Maleny Town and Country Rural Supplies on Coral Street, Maleny have sparked curiosity amongst some in the Maleny community. Locals have contacted Glasshouse Country and Maleny News asking if we knew what was happening. The works are a part of a long-term project to construct a self-storage facility, which was made to Council in an original material change of use application in 2008, refused, then subsequently approved through an appeal to the Planning and Environment Court in 2011. The recent construction is part of an operational works permit to undertake stormwater, drainage and earthworks in preparation for the construction of an access roadway and associated pavements. As part of the development, a buffer strip along the Obi Obi Creek has been given to the State as a Reserve for Park and a new access bridge is being constructed over the creek into the Maleny Showgrounds, adjacent to the existing footbridge on the Maleny Trail.

Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt says it is inevitable that significant numbers of consumers will leave the grid in coming years, and repeated his vow to help accelerate the deployment of battery storage. The reality is, however, that unless Australia’s high electricity prices, mostly in the form of inflated grid costs, can be addressed, then that is exactly what consumers will do. Not everyone, however, agrees that consumers should be encouraged to go off-grid, and Hunt ’s comments could be seen as controversial.

The Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Awards provide an opportunity to publicly recognise and honour the achievements of local citizens who have made an outstanding contribution to the region. The fate of many missions depended on the weather and Patrick’s role was to draw up synoptic charts, by hand, from weather information signalled to his ship in code from the Admiralty. An important part of the job was to include on the chart the location of any ships that had been sunk so the fleet could avoid them. The skills required to monitor the weather today are very different, with the data being more complex and requiring technology for processing. But that does not faze Patrick, he could easily be described as Inspector Gadget; his computer being his constant companion. Angela Griffin of Maleny Rotary says: “The Rotary Club of Maleny takes great pleasure in publicly and formally naming Patrick as a Paul Harris Fellow in appreciation for his outstanding commitment to our community over so many years."

Patrick Stacey, Bureau of Meteorology Synoptic Observer, the trusted source of Maleny weather forecasts, has been honoured as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow (named after the founder of Rotary) for his service to the community. Every day for 27 years, Patrick – now in his nineties – and his wife Kay have painstakingly collected data from equipment scattered about the Maleny Synoptic Weather Station. Barometric pressure, humidity, rainfall, wind speeds, solar radiation, dew point, clouds and evaporation is captured and shared with the Bureau of Meteorology before being beamed out to local television stations and agencies Angela Griffin, Maleny around the world. Being wrapped up for Christmas Glasshouse Country Toastmasters will wrap up 2015 at their final meeting for the year on December 10. The meeting promises to be a hilarious session when approached from the view of Christmas not being politically correct and three stories wherein the theme of each one weaves around two truths and a lie. The audience is then invited to say what are the truths and what is the lie. Each year the Toastmasters' Club puts together a ‘Christmas Box’ that contains goodies and gifts. This box is then presented to the congregation of the Church on the Rise through their Pastor, Aaron Jackson, for distribution to those folk in

the community doing it a little tough at this time of the year. Gweneth Brooks and Kerry Gillam seem to be wrapping themselves up with Christmas paper as they prepare the ‘Christmas Box’. Everyone is welcome to come to our last meeting at the church hall behind Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah, commencing at 9.15am.

Celebration for Landsborough Hall The completion of Stage One renovations for Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall was celebrated on Thursday, December 3, following the last meeting of 2015, and the new multipurpose room was officially declared open by Councillor Rick Baberowski. The official opening was attended by members of the Hall Management Committee, the Down Under Craft Group and representatives from the Landsborough Market. Guests were welcomed by Peter Pollock, Secretary, on behalf of Chairwoman Mrs Shirley Ruhle. Peter acknowledged the invaluable assistance of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Cr Baberowski in obtaining the grants that have made the repair and restoration of Stage One possible. Cr Baberowski was also acknowledged for his continuing support of the hall’s restoration project.

www.gcnews.com.au

Fundraising is an ongoing task and special thanks were directed to the organisers and supporters of the Bi-Annual Cent Auction which has raised in excess of $10,000 for the restoration project. The ongoing support of the long term regular users of the hall was also noted. These regular hirers together with the Landsborough Market and the Down Under Craft Group provide the ongoing funding for general running expenses and maintenance. Special thanks also to local builder Phil Bundesen for his work on the building which has been a difficult task. In his opening remarks, Cr Baberowski spoke of the substantial growth in this part of the Sunshine Coast, and that Landsborough is fast becoming the biggest transport hub for commuters in the area. It is important that the historical nature of Landsborough be preserved for future generations. Cr Baberowski believes that if anyone wants to know the history of the region, Landsborough is where you come to. "The township is full of history and the hall, museum and heritage buildings are important 'living' examples of our region's settlement story," he said. "Cultural heritage assets such as the hall will become even more important as the region continues to develop and grow."

Business Local News News Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce update with Andrew Prescott

Christmas decorations - Well it is that time of year again and it is great to see so many businesses with their Christmas displays showing in their shop fronts. The Christmas banners have also been erected along Simpson Street and the lighting on Tower Green looks terrific. It would be wonderful to see more lights and displays in the rest of the businesses too. Next Chamber meeting - will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start at the Beerwah Hotel and will also be our Christmas Function. There is a ‘Red and Green’ theme and all members are invited to come along and have some fun. Chamber for the Pumicestone Catchment Network - I recently attended one of their meetings, representing the Glasshouse Country Chamber, and was very impressed with the

variety of interested parties and the work that has already been done in implementing the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan. Further ideas to incorporate within the plan were discussed along with more ways on how to maintain and improve this wonderful natural resource we have. CCTV - some of you may have noticed work has commenced on installing the CCTV network in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House Mountains. Adrian from Beerwah Locksmiths has been working extremely hard to get the project done as soon as possible. The Chamber would like to thank Libby Brown for her tireless efforts to make this project happen, Douglas Grant for Consulting on the project, and Adrian for his hard work and patience with the supply and installation. Lastly the Chamber would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year to you all.

Contributed by Gordon McCormack We’ve enjoyed another rewarding year with strong membership and comfortable fellowship. It’s a Club in which you feel you’re part of a supportive family geared to keeping your mind active. Our most recent outing had a genuine English style ‘High Tea’ at Alan and Dagmar’s home. In spite of a miserable showery day almost 50 folk tackled the food pile and they hardly dented it. We enjoyed some marvellous ‘old’ items on display such as an 1880’s clock (which was still working), casket tickets from the Brisbane Casket, ration tickets from the war, a marine engineers 1840 style lamp, a clockwork ‘miniature’ of HRH clad in blue with her characteristic wave and a genuine yellow ‘Teddy’ one of us brought from his long past English babyhood. Christmas break up lunch at the Hideaway was another winner. Steve prepared a massive 100 question Trivia competition and both the real winning group and the most unsuccessful team each got a box of ‘Favourites’. Our traditional ‘Honour Board’ recognises those who came up with that extra special activity to boost our lives, either made it happen, or

My feet are SORE! … better call Stepping Out Podiatry Most people will suffer from painful feet within their lifetime, and the sooner you start treating it, the sooner you can start walking again! Painful feet can be caused from • Flattening of the arches • Daily activities where you are standing on your feet for too long • Poor foot alignment • Recent foot / ankle or leg injuries • An increase or change in your exercise regime A simple change in footwear may solve some inflammatory problems, along with stretching out the foot muscles and strengthening the weak surrounding muscles. The longer you leave foot pain, the more ‘secondary’ problems can arise, such as pain in the knees or hips / lower back. Three common foot pain conditions include: Achilles tendonitis Pain and inflammation at the back of the heel. The gastrocnemius and / or soleus muscle (calf muscle) becomes tight or strained and pulls on 1. Star balance: move one foot around the star keeping the other foot still

2. Arch stretch / hamstring stretch with a theraband

the heel bone, or tears in the muscle itself. Treatment: icing, stretches, supportive running shoes, heel raises, dry needling, ultrasound, rest. Flat feet or ‘rolling in’ of the feet when walking (over pronation) Flat feet causes the muscles and tendons to over-stretch causing pain. This affects the alignment of the body and may result in ankle, knee or lower back pain. Treatment: control movement with custom innersoles (orthotics), strengthening foot exercises and supportive shoes. Calluses A build-up of hard skin due to an increased amount of pressure. When this excess skin is removed by your Podiatrist, you will instantly feel relief. Prevention: reduce the amount of pressure on your feet with cushioned shoes, wider shoes or pressure relief innersoles. Below are some strengthening and stretching exercises for these conditions. Please consult your Podiatrist before undertaking any rehabilitation to prevent further injury.

3. Toe raisers: lift one foot off the ground and then raise up on your toes … slowly

4. Tennis ball: roll a tennis ball from the back of the foot to the front of the foot.

Greeting cards support Friends of Ebenezer Little Ray of Giving Friends of Ebenezer Australia is a community group based in Maleny. Started by local residents Lenore Burton and Dawn Sebbens 10 years ago, the group organise fundraising activities on behalf of the Ebenezer Childcare Trust in Livingstone, Zambia. Over in Livingstone Ranji Chara runs a heartfelt mission to care for orphaned and destitute children. This Christmas, Friends of Ebenezer Australia are asking locals to support the trust by buying their $4.00 Christmas and greeting cards and / or their $20.00 gift cards. Funds raised will directly support this wonderful organisation, and help improve the lives of kids in poverty. The money raised will be spent on essentials for the children as well as a Christmas Party for 350 plus children. A local Montville artist has kindly made and donated all the $4.00 cards to support this worthy cause. The $20.00 gift cards will provide much needed provisions such as chickens, a sheep or a goat, provisions for an elderly relative, medical supplies, support for the farm, or a contribution to assist to home an orphan. For those who choose to purchase a gift card, inside the card will read - ‘Instead of sending you a gift we have purchased a gift for the orphans at the Ebenezer Childcare Trust’ and a picture relevant to the gift will be added along with a picture of some of the toddlers from the Trust having fun. When ordering these items please add a few dollars to cover postage. For more information, contact Lenore 5429 6194, on her mobile 0407 672 076 or by email at ric1945len@yahoo.com.au. Christmas Local News News Donate until December 24 This Christmas season Morayfield Shopping Centre has provided a huge donation box inside their newest retailer, Mobile Independence, located just outside the Dick Smith entrance doors, to collect toys for Anglicare Southern Queensland. The toys will be donated to children in need of fostering this Christmas to make their day a little brighter! Gifts should be left unwrapped and tagged for what age and gender it would best suit. Many of the children Anglicare donate to are escaping abusive and dangerous situations at home, and arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs. Many have never experienced a ‘real’ Christmas. They have never woken up to gifts, never had the joy of decorating a Christmas tree and never experienced a family Christmas lunch. To find out more about the Anglicare Appeal go to their website, www.anglicaresq.org.au, and click on the 'giving' tab.

Maleny Christmas Tree Festival A ‘forest’ of trees has grown out front of the Maleny Uniting Church. People passing will see the brightly decorated Christmas trees that are part of the Maleny Christmas Tree Festival. For the fourth year running, this festival will see the building decked out with over 40 trees and displays which have been contributed by a wide range of local community groups. Each year the theme changes, and this year it is ‘Christmas: Past, Present Future’. Some trees will reminisce on past Christmases, some happy, others not so happy for some. Other trees will be very much in ‘the present’ while others will invite you to re-imagine Christmas in the future. The displays will have wide appeal for all ages and will be well worth a visit. Festival Coordinator Murray Robertson said that the festival has grown in popularity each year and one of the great benefits of the festival is that funds raised from donations will be given to a local charitable organisation. "This year money raised from the gold coin donation will go to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre," he said. Newly appointed Centre Coordinator, Nooreen Harris, said the demands on the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre are constantly growing and funds raised will enable the centre to continue to provide services to the community. Nooreen congratulated the Uniting Church for making this worthwhile community venture happen. And she thanked the Uniting Church for its decision to partner with the centre for the festival.

Uniting Church Minister, Reverend Catherine Solomon, sees the festival as a great opportunity for the community groups to come together under the one roof to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas, to celebrate the richness and creative diversity of our community, and to enjoy some of the mystery and excitement that Christmas brings. The Festival runs from December 18 to 24, at the Uniting Church, 1290 Maleny-Landsborough Road, Maleny. Details of times are on the church website, www.malenyuniting.com.au, and also on the Neighbourhood Centre website, www.malenync.org.au, or contact coordinator Murray Robertson on 0409 268 665.

Maleny Christmas Festival rocks local talent

By Sonia Clark Things are starting to get exciting in the countdown to the Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Carnival on Friday, December 11. This massive community celebration brings together the Hinterland Community in a magical and funfilled evening event that runs from 6.00pm until 10.00pm. Following on, 'Sweet Chilli Choir' will be performing uplifting multi-cultural songs with heavenly harmonies from 6.40pm 7.10pm. School News Glenview State School sizzle success

On Sunday, November 29, Glenview State School P&C held a sausage sizzle at the new Bunnings store at Maroochydore. It was a huge day that involved 80kg of sausages, 500 cold drinks, 20kg of chopped onions and 60 loaves of bread. A huge thanks to P & C President Michelle McCormac who pulled it all together and all the school families that came along and helped make it such a success. Thanks also to Mooloolah Meats and Mooloolah Bakery and all those parents who donated items and supported in other ways. The day went like clockwork and even school principal Lex Heilbronn came down to help cook in the midday heat. Along with the parents, a number of the kids came along to support the school and helped out ‘front of house’ taking orders and money and helping ‘upsell’ the products. The day was an incredible fundraiser and a great show of community and school spirit with a whopping $2,370.00 made!

Wishing you a blessed Christmas from Glasshouse Christian College

Buy fresh and local this Christmas, direct from the farm The local family behind the popular local business, Barry Family Butchers, are proud to have lived and worked in Beerwah for many, many years. They have been involved in farming and butchery for generations, with Robert looking to celebrate the amazing achievement of 48 years in the trade coming up in January 2016. He gained his Certificate of Trade Proficiency in 1973, after 5 years of an intensive training apprenticeship right here in Beerwah. This generous local business has supported numerous local groups over the years, including the Beerwah Kindy and Beerwah Bulldogs, just to name a few. Plus it’s good to know that you don’t have to travel far to buy quality, fresh meat and meat products from the farm. Selling from the farm gate means they can also sell in bulk as a half or whole beast, as well as by

the kilo – whatever suits your individual needs. They also have a huge range of small goods made on-site in their smokehouse (Christmas Hams – yum!), as well as ready to cook meal ideas great for when you are in a hurry. Would you like to make catering easier this Christmas? Barry Family Butchers can offer spit roast hire – complete with the roast of your choice. It’s a perfect option for outside feasting, and minimises a hot and messy kitchen this Festive season. To fit into people’s busy lifestyles they are open from 6.00am Monday – Saturday. Saturday is a busy day with people coming from outside the area, as well as locals too. They even offer free delivery across the entire Glasshouse Country and Maleny News readership area (conditions apply).

Only 3km from town, getting there is easy. Turn onto Roys Road then head down Bury’s Road all the way until you see the Barry Butchers sign - on the right hand side where the cattle are grazing.

The River School celebrates turning 21! By Anne Donoghoe (Deputy Principal) Over 200 people attended the River School’s 21st birthday celebration recently. The past merged with the present as students, parents and teachers who have been a part of the school’s history turned up in force to join in the evening’s festivities. A tour of the school highlighted how much the school has grown, from one house and a shed to include purpose built classrooms, sport’s hall, administration building, library and tuckshop as well as extensions to the existing buildings, many of which have their own interesting history. The current Year 4 classroom was the original Maleny Chemist and Doctor’s Surgery and our Early Childcare centre was the old Mooloolah Post Office. The audience were treated to a smorgasbord of performances from current students along with past teachers and students. A stunning mosaic created by the children, and guided by our art teacher Tracy Lewis and local artist Brett Campbell, drew gasps of admiration from the crowd. The festivities concluded with the burning of the wishing tree. A beautiful bamboo creation with seedpods made from recycled paper containing three written wishes from current students that reflected their gratitude for the past, love for our present, and blessings for the future. With the burning of the tree the student’s wishes were released and the ash has been mixed with soil for each class to plant sunflower seeds. The night’s celebrations honoured the many wonderful people and events that have shaped the lives of the children who have passed through this beautiful school. Add to this our Neohumanist philosophy that includes daily meditations, visualisations and yoga, and we have a vision that was created 21 years ago that has well and truly formed the River School way, a school that offers a place that is ‘safe, happy and free to learn’.

Thank you to the KinderMarlee families 2015 Dear Toddlers, The year is coming to an end and we would like to let each of you know how proud we are of your achievements over this past year. Each day we have had the pleasure of watching you grow and transform into more curious, brave and independent young people. Day by day we watched you learn through play, and explore different spaces. Making mud pies, dancing in the rain and relaxing with a story together cuddled up on the couch, we have enjoyed it all! We thank you for showing us each of your cheeky personalities, and are excited to grow together in future years. Love Danielle, Catherine, Simone

Thanks to you all, we appreciate the world so much more. We are grateful to you for teaching us to notice the smell of rain, experience the feel of mud between our toes and to notice such little creatures as worms, ants and bees, (even though we are sometimes scared of them!). Life is full of adventures and experiences! We have watched you and joined in play with you, as you flew like superman, floated around the centre like Elsa and roared like a tiger! You have learnt to negotiate and co-operate, speak your mind and listen; and we both value your ideas and opinions. You are an artist, a chef, a builder, and much, much more, but most importantly you’re a good friend. You have forged trusting and strong relationships with many children and two very lucky ladies! Dear Kindy Children,

Danielle with Taylah and Amelia

Dear Juniors and Seniors, Although we understood that children and adults see the world in different ways, this year we have learnt to look at learning through your eyes.

Thank you for a truly wonderful year. It has been a joy watching you grow and develop, inspire and be inspired and tackle your unique challenges with confidence and sometimes a helping hand. In our Kindergarten, the roles of teacher and learner were shared and interchangeable between us. Each day has had so many learning moments, and learning alongside you has been an incredible experience. This year, you taught us how to look at the world through your eyes – thank you for including us in your sense of wonder in exploring the every day. There has been countless

We have supported each other, shared interests and celebrated our differences. We are so proud of the incredibly thoughtful, kind and considerate individuals that we have been lucky to spend our days with. Thank you for the laughs, cuddles, tears and smiles. Our relationship has been built on strong foundations of respect, trust and a genuine interest in what each of us has to share - these have become essential qualities of our Kindergarten Program. Please continue exploring. Continue questioning. Continue inspiring, motivating and helping each other. We feel confident (but reluctant) in sending you out into the world. Greet it with open arms. The world is your oyster and we believe you have the strength, persistence, dedication and desire to accomplish anything. All our love, Jillian and Jane

You Said It A year on and still no traffic lights!

Anyone remember about this time or thereabouts last year? Our local paper was contacted by a bloke called Emerson, and as a result, they ran a feature for and on behalf of our then Local Member, (in good faith I might mention) that our much-needed traffic lights at Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way were on the drawing board and so on and so on. I have no doubt, that article or piece of information was what got him back into Parliament, the count against the unknown was extremely close, unfortunately, he failed by a whisker. So where are our traffic lights? Another year has passed and the bureaucrats are still unable to produce them. I don't know if anyone ever travels down Old Gympie Road to Beams Road at Carseldine? If you do, make a left into Beams Road and within 150 metres you will see a set of brand new traffic lights, they were installed in a matter of a few weeks and they get nowhere near the volume of traffic our intersection gets. Just the other day, the Bruce Highway had another horrific fatal accident, Steve Irwin Way took the overload once again and our intersection once again was jammed, traffic back over the rail bridge. It is very much like that every school day when the parents who do not use the local bus services, take their children to and from school,

B1 and B2 update

The B1 and B2 Sh#tbox Rally team of Bronnie Graves and Hollie Butler had their first big fundraiser on Saturday night. The sausage sizzle with Old Skool Cars was so busy, but a lot of fun. Everyone was in a good mood and enjoying the atmosphere and they will be sharing the $840.00 for the Cancer Council which was split 50/50 with one of the other teams that helped out. The girls would like to thank Beerwah IGA for their support and donations of drinks and product for this event. That’s one sausage sizzle

down and three more to go. Bronnie also has a Christmas raffle going and is planning a movie night at Caloundra in the New Year. At that stage they are hoping to get their car from North Lakes as well. Bronnie’s Dad Steve Graves Glass House Mountains

only of course when a serious accident blocks the Bruce, it goes on for hours and hours. A set of traffic lights at our intersection will at least allow us an opportunity to get out or into our area. Mr local member, get your backside into gear, open your mouth and make some noises, we want some action and results, not unfounded promises. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains Editor’s note This week the Member of Glass House Andrew Powell, has included an update on how the intersection upgrade for Reed Street is coming along, see Elected Representative Columns on page 36.

The elusive long-nosed potoroo has been caught on camera making surprise appearances at a number of council and private properties on the Sunshine Coast. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Council was serious about protecting our native animals and the discovery of the potoroos was more proof that conservation and biodiversity protection programs were achieving positive results. “The long-nosed potoroo is listed as vulnerable under state and Australian legislation so you can imagine our delight when one of council’s motion sensor cameras captured several of the little critters at one of council’s environmental reserves recently,” Cr McKay said. “They are one of the smaller members of the kangaroo family – only around a foot long, weighing just over one kilogram – and seldom venture from the shelter of dense understory vegetation. “Foxes and feral cats have been identified as key predators to the longnosed potoroo. “Domestic cats are also a threat – council encourages reserve neighbours to help in the protection of this and other vulnerable native animals by ensuring pet cats and dogs are not roaming into the reserve.” “We had recently completed a successful wild dog and fox control program in one of council’s reserves and were undertaking standard infrared camera monitoring when, to our surprise, several potoroos showed up,” she said. “Council takes this precautionary approach of ongoing monitoring with our control programs to ensure any changes made, including the removal of predators, does not impact the dynamic or balance within the environmental reserve. “Through using non-invasive motion camera sensors we are gaining such invaluable data on this largely hidden species. This is enabling us to piece together a picture to determine their structural habitat preferences and their movements within the environment. “Having precious few records of potoroos within South-East Queensland, this latest discovery of several at council’s environment reserve is really fantastic.”

Slime mould Contributed by Martin Pedder Encountered a blob of slimy stuff that looks a bit like scrambled eggs or something the dog threw up? It’s likely you’ve seen one of two life stages of a creature with the fitting common name of ‘Dog’s Vomit Slime Mould’ (Fuligoseptica). Slime moulds or myxomycetes feed on the microorganisms that break down dead plant material, releasing nutrients into the soil for use by live plants and other organisms. They are found in soil, lawns, and on the forest floor, commonly on decomposing logs. The mass we see is a collection of many single-celled organisms that congregate when food is scarce and form a single amoebalike being which can move two to three centimetres a day. The ‘blob’ can detect food sources and light and makes its way to higher ground where it morphs into its spore-dispersing stage. These forms can be vomit-like, like thousands of tiny mushrooms or delicate, hair-like stalks with powdery caps. Spores hitch a ride on the wind or on a passing animal before germinating in a new location. More than 900 species of slime mould occur all over the world – bright orange, red, yellow, brown, black, blue, or white – and may look like blobs, gooey or foamy masses or jelly. They’re famous for their navigation skills: slime moulds can solve mazes and calculate the quickest route on a map. Search for “slime mould maze” and be amazed! Fun fact: it was slime moulds that inspired the movie ‘The Blob’. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. with Braxton Turnage If you're experiencing knee or hip pain, you're not alone. Nearly everyone will experience knee or hip pain at some point in their lives. When this kind of pain strikes, the best doctors are likely to recommend the least invasive treatment to alleviate pain and encourage healing. Many people experiencing pain are afraid to exercise or move in fear that it will make things worse. Instead, this avoidance of activity actually makes things worse. Joints begin to stiffen even faster as they aren’t being used and stretched. Muscles begin to weaken and atrophy because of the disuse. Once this happens, the injury begins to spread to nearby areas out of compensation. When hip and knee problems aren’t looked after, they often spread into back problems or ankle and foot problems. Along with applying ice or heat to relieve pain and inflammation, exercise is one of the best things you can do for a sore or injured joint. If you like to exercise regularly but need to give your hip or knee a rest while an injury heals, there are some exercises you can do in the meantime. As always, it’s best to consult with your local health professional if you are unfamiliar with exercise. A physiotherapist or exercise physiologists are safe bets when it comes to hip and knee rehabilitation. If you’re going to get started on your own, you can combine these exercises to create a routine lasting 30 minutes or longer, four times per week: • floor exercises, including abdominal curls, crunches, push-ups, or leg lifts • exercises that target the upper body, including repeated lifting of hand weights in different directions • gentle yoga • swimming or water aerobics • routines involving an exercise ball, including stretches, abdominal curls, or leg lifts.

Mellum Munchies

The longstanding cafe located on the corner of Cribb and Maleny Streets Landsborough has had a complete internal renovation over the few months. Customers are loving the 1950’s/1960’s rock and roll diner vibe and new owners, Dan and Tam, are enjoying bringing their love of classic cars and this retro era to a new dining experience for locals. The family run business features a menu that

offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options in a 1950’s themed environment. In a nice touch, some of the burgers are themed with names like ‘The Elvis’ (works burger with bacon, egg, cheese, pineapple) for $10.00,’ The Buddy Holly’ (Calamari, American cheese and sauces) $6.50, and the Graceland (Chicken works burger) $12.00. Wednesday nights are their special Hot Dog nights

with prices starting at $4.00 or you can try the ‘James Dean’ (hotdog with the lot) for $6.50. The diner has great retro features such as checkerboard flooring, vintage car memorabilia signage, and a jukebox! Come on in and listen to some old tunes on the jukebox and keep your eyes out for classic cars. Open Monday – Friday 9.30am - 7.30pm, Saturday 9.00pm - 6.00pm and Sunday 2.00pm - 6.00pm, 5494 1349.

National Security

The Prime Minister recently gave an address on our National Security. If you missed it you can read the full speech at http://www.liberal.org.au/ latest-news/2015/11/24/prime-minister-nationalsecurity-statement-canberra. The Government’s highest priority is to keep Australians safe. In September last year, the alert level was raised to high, and it has remained there ever since. Since September 2014, 26 people have been charged as a result of 10 counter terrorism operations around Australia. That’s more than one-third of all terrorism related charges since 2001. The Government’s investment in Countering Violent Extremism programs has tripled over the past four years to more than $40 million. The fact that there has to date been no mass casualty attack owes much to the vigilance of our security agencies.

Grants for Local Sporting Champions

Applications are now open for individual grants of $500 to assist young athletes aged between 12 and 18 years with the costs of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing or officiating at an official state, national or international sporting championships. Applications close on February 29. More information is available at http://www.ausport.gov.au/participating/local_ sporting_champions

Have you signed the petition to upgrade the Bruce Highway to six Lanes from Caboolture to Caloundra?

The Bruce Highway is the life blood between the Hinterland and Brisbane, relied upon by commuters, businesses and tourists. We cannot fail to recognise the significance of the Bruce Highway to the economic strength of the area. I am doing all I can in Canberra to secure funding for this project. Through the Boost the Bruce Campaign we now need the community to demonstrate their support for a project that can only benefit the Hinterland. Sign up at www.boostthebruce.com.au

Reed Street update

I know you are all very eager to see works commence on the traffic lights at the Reed Street intersection so I have sought an update from TMR on their schedule. The latest information I have been given confirms that, weather permitting, crews will be on site before Christmas attending to some of the drainage issues that have been discovered in the design process. Residents will also see equipment starting to arrive and being set up during December and early January. TMR are working on a timeframe of getting the major works under way by the end of January but before then they assure me they will be attending to the pre-construction works. I will be regularly visiting the site during December and January in particular myself to check on progress and will share photos of how things are going on Facebook.

Kids in Care appeal

I’m pleased to say my office is again offering to be a drop off point for the Kids in Care Appeal. Please feel free to drop any unwrapped gifts for kids aged birth to 17 years into my office before they are collected by the Department of Communities on Thursday, December 17. Gifts up to $20.00 in value are greatly appreciated, and will be shared amongst the many children in need in Queensland.

Christmas office closure

This is my last contribution to the paper for the year so I would like to wish readers a very Merry Christmas and all the best for a great start to 2016. My office will be closed from Friday, December 18 to Monday, January 11, but we will be checking emails over that time so if something pops up be sure to let us know. I will also have regular updates on events and community issues on my Facebook page so if you have not already liked it, make sure you do. One event I will be sharing updates on is the Woodford Folk Festival! Starting on December 27, this is sure to be the best year yet as they celebrate 30 years of the Festival’s history. If you’ve got the time, make sure you get along to experience music and culture at its best.

Mooloolah Breakfast

A heads up: this month’s Mooloolah breakfast meeting has been postponed by two weeks until Thursday, December 17, 7.00am for a 7.30am start. These monthly meetings are a great opportunity to learn about the latest local projects and raise any concerns you may have for me to investigate. And with this meeting being the last one of the year, it would be lovely to see you all there to celebrate one enormous 2015.

Ewen Maddock Dam bike track

Keen to do something healthy and active with the family, while taking advantage of the beautiful warm weather we’re enjoying at the same time? Why not explore the Ewen Maddock Dam mountain bike trail? I recently received some really positive feedback from a local resident who rode the track for the first time and commented that it was “terrific – really well thought out and constructed,” and requested I pass on his thanks and appreciation to those in council who helped made the track happen. As well as sharing this with the relevant staff, I thought I’d also flag it in this column, encouraging others to check it out. With the trail head location at Maddock Park Recreation Area, Mooloolah, it features safe wide tracks, perfect for the whole family. The track out from the picnic area covers some hilly ground through Turpentine trees, Brush Box and Pink Bloodwood, and is a good beginner ride with a return trip of approximately 9km. There is also a designated swimming area in the dam.

Are you prepared for storm season?

Get ready and make sure you’re prepared for disasters. Severe weather events, flooding and bushfires can strike at any time. If you’re fit and healthy it’s your responsibility to prepare your home, yourself, your pets and others to minimise disruption to your lifestyle. Visit council’s Disaster Hub website for all the information you need to be prepared and stay up-to-date with details when events occur. It includes important information including road closures, weather warnings, preparedness advice and breaking news.

Protecting our potoroos

I’m excited to advise the elusive long-nosed potoroo has been caught on camera making surprise appearances at a number of council and private properties on the Sunshine Coast. We had recently completed a successful wild dog and fox control program in one of council’s reserves and were undertaking standard infrared camera monitoring when to our surprise several potoroos showed up. Council is serious about protecting our native animals and the discovery of the potoroos, listed as vulnerable under state and Australian legislation, is more proof that the Environment Levy’s conservation and biodiversity protection programs are achieving positive results.

When the Prince changes places with his manservant in his hunt for a bride, the fun begins in the Maleny Players’ Christmas pantomime – Cinderella: The Untold Story. As well as the horrible stepmother Acrimonia, and her two ugly sisters, the Chooky Express (she travels at 60 clucks an hour), there is a mysterious red button that no one is allowed to press, and an assortment of other strange characters who inhabit the haunted Hardup Inn. Add in the appearance of Ray and the Sunshines as wandering minstrels and this is all part of the traditional fun that has been part of the Players’ shows for the past six years, with plenty of audience participation and entertainment for all ages. It turns out that over-regulation has affected the appearance of the golden coach and the mice-turned footmen, plus the glass slippers are considered much too dangerous for health and safety reasons. Director David Crewe said they have a cast of more than 40 this year who have been rehearsing hard since October. “And there’s a surprise for the children in the show who are all rather naughty. But that’s for the audience to find out,” he said. The show runs Saturday, December 12 at 6.30pm and Sunday, December 13 at 2.30pm and then Saturday, December 19 at 2.30pm and 6.30pm and Sunday, December 20 at 2.30pm. Tickets available online at www.malneyplayers.org or from the Maleny Visitor Centre. Prices for adults $20.00, students $10.00 and children under six are free. Sam Manger as the Prince, and Anita Manger as Cinderella, are all part of the fun in the Maleny Players' upcoming Christmas pantomime

• When we get heavy rain, it will leach nutrients out of your garden soils, such as calcium and nitrogen. So you may need to re-fertilise around your green leafy vegetables and tomatoes. While we have relatively rainless weather, you can apply a light spread of lawn fertiliser and sprinkle it in. • If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with a systemic insecticide (such as ‘MaxGuard’) to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lacebug. • The warm humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veggies over-night. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as ‘Success’ or ‘Dipel’) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays – so repeat after rain or overhead watering. • Watch out for fruit fly in your tomatoes. You can easily protect your tomatoes by putting a paper bag over them. Scrunch up the top and use a peg to hold it in place. You can use a baited trap – but most only capture the male flies, and so are best used as an indicator of fruit fly activity. A better product is ‘Eco-Naturelure’ which attracts both the male and female fruit flies, and contains a natural insecticide to kill them. My advice is not to spray it onto the plants you want to protect, as it will attract the fruit flies to them before killing them. I’d suggest spraying a nearby fence or other structure to lure the flies away from your precious fruits. • Fertilise your bananas and cut out any suckers you don’t want. For each mature plant, you should have one sapling and one sucker. Regularly remove yellowing leaves to keep the clump tidy. • Paw paw trees which have grown too tall can cut be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can. • Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed them with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire, and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers. • Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too – keeping well hydrated is just as important. • Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden. Vegetables Plant tomato, capsicum, snake bean, okra, eggplant, sweet corn, lettuce (leafy varieties), radish, sweet potato, cucumber, zucchini, choko, pumpkin, rockmelon, watermelon and rosella. Flowers Plant cosmos, marigold, salvia, zinnia, begonia, celosia, gomphrena, sunflower, torenia, ageratum, aster, impatiens and coleus.

Christmas appeals still underway By Lea Parkes During November the BOQ at Beerwah and Maleny had great support from the local community for their Smith Family Toy and Book Appeal, with their collections now complete. However, if you are still looking for a ways that you can assist in bringing joy to individuals and families in our local community, Target’s Anglicare Appeal, where customers are encouraged to purchase a $1.00 bauble, is going through until Christmas Eve and Ray White Real Estate’s Little Ray of Sunshine continues until December 21 (more details on page 14). State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell’s office in Maleny is also a drop off point for the Kids in Care appeal up until Thursday, December 17. And both the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Beerwah Youth and Community Centre are collecting non-perishable food items to be used in hampers for locals in need.

LUTHERAN CHURCH

Reed Street, Glass House Mtns

Sunday Worship & Sunday School 9.00am

Dr Percy Harrold - Seventh Day Adventist Church

From Cathedral to Craggy Gorge

Recently I missed going to church two weeks in a row, and it felt strange. First weekend I was with my daughter and her family, and we spent the day with the grandchildren deep in the Galston Gorge just north of Sydney. With its scoured-out sandstone canyon walls this gorge is a tricky drive with hairpin turns so sharp some are signed at 5kph. The creek at the bottom is a branch of the mighty Hawkesbury River. Hikers, picnickers and families having a day out were enjoying the rugged bushland either side of the creek. What a joy it is to spend time with family in the great outdoors. The following weekend was spent out again, this time at a secluded beach just west of Mallacoota Inlet in eastern Victoria. Amid the magnificent swirls of a geological formation of coastal cliffs we discussed the approach to life of the captive prophet Jeremiah. No chapel, church or cathedral, but a little spot again amidst the beauty of God’s creation, and we were brought closer to Him.

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671

Sometimes the outdoors can provide an insight into the expansiveness of God, and also inspire the reflections on His continued and past care for us. And yet there is something special in coming together as a congregation in a building which feels and sounds familiar in the act of worship. And that happened on the third weekend in Cooranbong just west of Newcastle, a familiar setting at Avondale College where my daughter lectures nursing students. It was great to see amiliar faces of others I have known for a long time. This important part of worship involves not just experiencing the awe of who God is, but also the sharing with those who also believe or who are searching with you. That is one of the benefits of regularly worshipping in the same congregation. This weekend, as Christmas draws closer we can expect more people to be worshipping in church. It may be on Sunday, or as with my congregation, on Saturday. Of course, visitors are always welcome. Christians are friendly like that.

Sport Bluegum takes out Beerwah Swimming Carnival Students from the ages of 8 to 12 from Beerwah Primary School attended their annual swimming carnival at the local Beerwah and District Pool. The school's four sport houses were represented by individual students swimming all day, cheering their peers, with the sports house of Bluegum taking home the most overall points. Age Champions were awarded for each year level, as follows: 8 year olds, Trae and Amelia;

Dedication recognised!

9 year olds, Zacharie and India; 10 year olds, Tyson and Poppy; 11 year olds, Nick and Brooke; and 12 year olds Codey and Cassidy. The same week, Brendon, coach at Beerwah Pool, attended the school parade and was presented with a school flag and certificate of appreciation from PE teacher Mrs Traynor for the longstanding support and relationship between the pool and the school.

Instructor and owner of San Training Centre in Beerwah, Cameron Taylor, has recently had his achievements in Taekwondo recognised, receiving a Full Blue award from the University of the Sunshine Coast and being nominated as athlete of the year for the Queensland Sports Awards by Taekwondo Queensland. The Full Blue is one of the highest awards available to athletes in the university system, originally used by Oxford and Cambridge. “Being nominated as the athlete of the year for the Queensland sports awards is a great honour,” said Cameron, who attended the awards dinner last Monday night with 800 other guests. Unfortunately he didn’t make the finalists which included sporting stars like pro surfer Mick Fanning, rugby league's Jonathon Thurston and the eventual winner, golfer Jason Day. Cameron said: “I’ve been doing Taekwondo since I was six and It’s nice to have your achievements recognised, but I have my sights set on the future with the shadow Olympic team for the 2016 Rio Games due to be announced next week. I will also be looking to further develop San Training Centre in Beerwah." For more information, visit www.santkd.com

Old Boys Cricket

Contributed by Barb Cox Two Beerwah locals, Noel Cox and Dave Walton, were members of the Queensland Over 70 cricket team which participated in the Over 60/70 National Championship in Hobart recently. There were 36 teams from all states that competed in the competition. The Over 70 Queensland team won their matches against Victoria 1, Tasmania and Victoria 3, to play NSW in the final. Unfortunately the final game was washed out by rain and the wet weather calculations came into being and NSW won by just 1 run. www.gcnews.com.au

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

A Christmas tradition Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, many years ago, but there were problems everywhere. His elves were sick and did not produce the toys as fast as normal so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs Claus told Santa that her mum was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth, and two had jumped the fence and were out. Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys.

Santa went into the house for a drink to discover that the elves had hidden the good stuff, and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he dropped the cup, shattering it all over the floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw. Just then the doorbell rang, he opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?" Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree. Submitted by Jack, Peachester

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 09/12/2015 SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The whole weekend will see upwards movement in your self-confidence and initiative efforts to get ahead on new projects. With Mercury in good aspect to Uranus you will be feeling good about breaking free from confining circumstances. You are in the spotlight this weekend. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The whole week is a signal to shift all your attention to your private affairs. You will also benefit from a short, rejuvenating rest this weekend. Use this time alone to reform old patterns into effective new ones. Small get togethers are where you will feel cosy and secure now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Expect lots of invitations to say ‘yes’ to, as the New Moon in Sagittarius burns brightly through your eleventh sector. You are letting people know your objectives and you feel like doing kind and helpful deeds. Also this weekend is a good time to get your personal affairs in order. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The Sagittarius New Moon may put some pressure on your professional and career activities. Perhaps you should avoid becoming involved in other people’s problems. Be friendly in business dealings and it’s a good time to forge intellectual alliances. Happy partnership times now.

LEO July 23 – August 22 This weekend sees the New Moon in Sagittarius making you wish that you could buy some real estate. This is because Mercury enters Capricorn and the Moon will be in Capricorn adding to your wishes by Sunday and Monday. Options for romance should be on the upswing now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 From Friday until next Sunday you might want to deck the halls at home with the holiday spirit! If you do find any financial crisis building it is not the time to react impulsively as Mercury heads into the sign of Capricorn bringing wisdom and clear advice as to how to handle everything. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 You may be feeling tremendous pressures as Mars puts stress to Pluto and then opposes Uranus just before the New Moon hits on Friday. For the next two weeks this is an explosive period when pent up feelings prompt volatile behaviour, best to pull back rather than push hard now. SCORPIO 23 October - 22 November Sultry Venus makes a good aspect to Neptune as well as Jupiter and Pluto. So this is an auspicious couple of weeks to experience serendipity and pleasure in romantic Christmas feelings. The New Moon is in your money sector ready for gift buying or payment for a seasonal holiday trip.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 A Mars/Uranus contact makes life fast paced this week, especially where other people are concerned. Keep your options open to adapt to rapid changes. Now be careful as hasty moves can cause accidents due to the New Moon. It is time to mull over a holiday trip. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With the Sun, Saturn and Mercury in Sagittarius and the New Moon also coming up on Friday, your whole weekend will see shared financial concerns. This could be a budget, partner’s income, or business funds. Someone is throwing angry postures your way. Find someone in charge! GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The new Moon is in Sagittarius and when it hits ready for your weekend, this will favour partnerships and brings plenty of excitement with it. It’s time to break new ground with the new adventures it will bring. Avoid showing off in excessive competitions which may spoil the game. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This whole week ahead covers medical involvements and your physical wellbeing but the New Moon in Sagittarius says that a dental appointment may be necessary too. In fact, for the next two years, Saturn will plan a long term wellness regime to combat stress and fatigue.
