SEPTEMBER 9 2015

Hi Everyone

O

n the cover this week we have featured two of the local artists involved in the Peace in the Trees Sculptural Walk at Maleny and Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay who officially opened the walk last week. The project was created by the community enterprise ‘art4place’ and incorporates 12 individual sculptures created by local artists. Over the years I have been to numerous art openings. These are usually glamourous night time events, inside a gallery space, with stylishly dressed people, drinking bubbles and eating canapés. Well, I have to say last Wednesday’s event was as extremely different. It was set in the late afternoon, in a 500 metre long creekside ‘gallery’, with a winding concrete path running through the centre, and lined on one side by tree plantings. As a bystander it was a genuinely heart-warming event where you could feel the sense of pride and achievement from not just the individual artists, but their families and kindred spirits who were there. And while there was sadness in the acknowledgement that the group's mentor, the late Craig Medson, was not there, there must be solace for them to all know that the skills that Craig shared and inspired in them has meant that locals and tourists for many years to come will be able to share in the joy of the space that they have created. Regards,

Local News Safer towns sooner The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce push to have security closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the townships of Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House Mountains has finally come to fruition, with the set up of 21 cameras commencing in late September. With $150,000 funding coming through the Federal Government’s Safer Streets program, it is anticipated that the cameras will assist in crime prevention and generally making locals and visitors feel safer and more comfortable in the town central business districts. At last week’s Chamber of Commerce meeting, President Andrew Prescott announced that a local contractor – Beerwah Locksmiths – had won the tender to install the CCTV system. “We’re fortunate to have a local person such as Adrian Korst from Beerwah Locksmiths who has the expertise in security systems and the local knowledge to get the best from the technology,” Mr Prescott said. “Utilising the expert consulting services of Douglas Grant from CCTV.com.au, we were able to specify what type of high quality technology we wanted to have installed, and how it would all operate, in a highly effective manner.” Mr Grant explained that the system will be world class.

“The cameras have a three mega-pixel resolution, meaning that the image quality will be fantastic. Images will be able to be enhanced and zoomed in without significant loss of clarity,” he said. “They are low-light cameras can record clear images even when there is minimal light available. “In co-operation with the Chamber, we have identified a range of locations in each township where the cameras will be best positioned to give considerable broad coverage of the central business districts and other hot-spots,” he said. All going well, it is anticipated that the cameras will be fully operational by mid to late October. Issues such as privacy of the footage from the cameras has also been scrutinised. The Chamber has instigated a strict access policy to ensure public privacy is maintained to the highest standard,” explained Mr Prescott. “A formal process has been established where only the Police can request access to the footage and only for crime investigation purposes.

Help our Aussie farmers Many people are aware that the drought is significantly affecting families and farms – especially in the west of our state. Some towns haven't seen a drop of rain in eight years, animals are starving and families are struggling to put food on the table. To help ease the burden, local businesses, community members and the charity group Drought Angels are organising a special relief ‘Drought Run’ in early October. Mooloolah locals Ben, Lee and Tori Henderson from BTL Plant Hire are coordinating the ‘Drought Run’ to the families of Ilfracombe on October 3 and 4. The plan is to send as many trucks and trailers as possible filled with desperately needed supplies. Relief feed is needed for horses, cattle, sheep and chickens as well as cat and dog food. Non-perishable food items such as canned foods, long life milk/cream, jams etc as well as toilet paper, laundry powder, and personal hygiene products are also urgently required. Christmas food items would be a nice gesture such as jellies, canned fruit, salad dressings etc, but basically any donation big or small will be gratefully accepted. Cash donations are also accepted and the funds will be used to stock up on greatly needed items and to provide prepaid visa cards. An industrial shed has been provided to store these items. If you have any questions regarding the Drought Run please contact Lee 0414 869 885 or Tori 0459 990 765.

Tiarne Barkle from Mooloolah Produce and Stockfeed with Lee Henderson Mooloolah Produce and Stockfeeds (Shop 2 Mooloolah Connection Road, 5492 9222) are playing a big part in this project and will be a local drop-off point for anyone who would like to donate anything or buy stockfeed, hay, pet food etc, for donation. They also accept direct deposit, eftpos, or credit cards over the phone, and in store cash. For further details like the Facebook page 'BTL and Friends Sunshine Coast to West Drought Run'.

Find tranquillity at Maleny’s Peace in the Trees The Peace in the Trees sculptural installation of 12 sandstone monoliths, which provides an invitation to pause and reflect on peace and the natural environment, is located at the Riverside Centre end of Maleny Trail in the Maleny Community Precinct. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay performed the official opening duties last week. "These beautiful works that make-up the Peace in the Trees Sculptural Walk were created by community enterprise ‘art4place’ and they encourage us to think a little more about our natural environment and particularly, the peacefulness it brings us,” Cr McKay said.

Artist Barry Smith cutting the ribbon with Cr Jenny McKay

The sculptural work was carved by 13 local artists and would not have come into being without the inspiration and support of internationally renowned local sculptor Craig Medson, who passed away in early 2015. Craig supported the community and fellow artists by arranging the delivery of 12 tonnes of Helidon sandstone, personally breaking it into workable monoliths, and inspiring and teaching artists to sculpt the stone. Sculptor Cathy Lawley said, "When we first started, we each chose our sandstone plinths, and Craig asked us to sketch what we felt emerge from the sandstone. I saw a platypus, and now its sitting in its perfect place – who would have known? “I had a lot of help from Craig," Cathy added. "He was such a generous, humble teacher. I left the initial workshop he ran for the group with a new respect for both Craig and all sandstone sculptors. “We chipped away for five days. My wrist would ache at the end of the day, but the final result and the friendships we made were worth every minute. "I kept saying to Craig, 'sandstone is so hard to use'. He would just smile. I definitely prefer to work in clay any day!" Cr McKay would like to encourage the community to come out, take a stroll and soak in the peace and tranquillity. If you would like to know more about the background of the project the art4place blog features a photographic journey of the project stages at www.art4place.blogspot.com. au/2015/07/the-peace-in-trees-sculptural-walk

In June 2014 the Gold Coast Bulletin reported that after 45 years as an Anglican priest Fr Harry Reuss would be leaving his role at Southport’s St Peter Anglican Church, where he had been for the previous nine years, as he planned to retire. For many of us, the idea of having to work past 65 isn’t necessarily something that we are planning to do and even in the Anglican Church their policy is for priests to finish their working life at 70. However, for Maleny Anglican Parish, Father Harry has proved the Gold Coast Bulletin wrong as these days you will find him still working fulltime – but now he calls Maleny home. While he did take six months long-service leave and enjoyed an extended holiday, after returning from his travels the Archbishop asked to see him – and suggested that instead of retiring Father Harry might be interested in taking a two year posting to Maleny. Father Harry "jumped at the chance" so, in February this year, the Maleny Anglican Parish was hit by Hurricane Harry, as he was affectionately known by his previous parishioners. After chatting with him you can see where this title came from. He is definitely not the shy, retiring type but more a whirlwind of action. The role of Priest of the Maleny Anglican Parish had gone unfilled since 2010, and Father Harry said while the church elders had done a remarkable job in keeping things going, having he and his wife move and take on the job must have been a relief for them.

Father Harry picking up the church's newly repaired mower from Pat from The Big Mower While his official church duties keep him busy, it definitely doesn’t stop him from also being the church's mower man, possum catcher and handyman. Maleny seems like a good fit for Fr Harry as he started life on his family's dairy farm in Wodonga, before going to Agricultural College and ending up in Horsham, a wheat growing area. Fr Harry said while in his early life he had an involvement in the 'pastoralist life' eventually his calling was to the 'Pastoral life'. He describes his style of ministry as ‘Old School’ and conservative. He likes to build relationships with not just his parishioners, but the broader community, and he is always happy to do house visits at anytime, just give the Parish office / rectory a call on 5499 9130 or 0428 187 625.

Diligent service recognised Last week the Member for Fisher, Mal Brough, was called on to present a National Police Service Medal to Glass House Mountains local Earnest (Max) Chapman. The award is for Australian Sworn Police Officers who have served for 15 or more years and recognises their ethical and diligent service during this time. Max grew up on a property in rural New South Wales, and served as a NSW Police officer for 25 years. With his strong horsemanship skills, not surprisingly, he spent the first two years working as Mounted Police Officer. Over the years he moved through the ranks working traffic, special weapons, public safety, and ended his career as a plain clothes Senior Detective working with what we would now call ‘hoons’ but in those days were referred to as hoodlums. During his career he worked in Sydney, Kempsey, Nowra and finally in Queanbeyan. During that time he received a number of awards including 1970 Alfred Edward Award for Bravery by a traffic Officer, 1972 Queens Commendation for Bravery, 1974 Commissioner Commendation for Bravery, 1983 Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and in 1993 he received the Commissioners Medal for Bravery. Max and wife Elaine moved to Glass House Mountains 11 years ago which gave them the opportunity to be closer to his daughter and grandson who lived on the Sunshine Coast. He is well known to many locals for his continued dedication to caring for horses that were no

Gain worth the pain

Experience Latin America with a personal touch We will be there at all times so our knowledge and passion can assist you to experience a dream holiday you will never forget.

In May this year, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP completed yet another 38km walk along Maleny-Kenilworth Road from Little Yabba Creek in Cambroon to Tesch Park in Maleny, to show his support to local chaplains and his commitment to fix the road. “The walk does seem to get tougher each year, but maybe that is just my age creeping up on me! I think it is fair to say it did take me a few extra days to recover this time. “This year I even had Chappy Becky from Maleny State School and Chappy Tressa from Conondale join me for the entire trip,” he said. “I’m pretty sure they were both in a world of pain afterwards – but when you know it’s all for a good cause the pain doesn’t seem quite as bad. “I’d like to thank Ross and Sally and their team at Maleny Dairies for their donations of milk and yogurt products that assisted in the hydration of our walkers. "My thanks are also extended to the Maleny IGA, Conondale General Store and the many volunteers who came together to make this day happen,” he said. Mr Powell is pleased to report that this year the walk raised a total of $1500.00 that will be split between the Conondale and Maleny State Schools. “I have not forgotten my promise to secure funds to fix this dangerous road, and I will keep doing it until I have delivered,” he said.

Sun-drenched miners look to the skies to cut fuel costs in half Miners including Rio Tinto and Newmont are installing solar plants, betting they'll deliver long-term savings. The DeGrussa copper and gold mine in the sun-scorched outback is getting a solar farm, the latest example of the mining industry embracing clean energy. The plant will replace about 5 million litres of diesel a year, a fifth of the mine's energy needs. Energy generated by the system may eventually cost

about half that of diesel-generated power, according to Sandfire Resources, the deposit's owner. Rio Tinto, the second-largest mining company, is completing the construction of a demonstration solar farm at its Weipa bauxite operation in Queensland.

The Blackall 100 is on again Are you up for an endurance trail running challenge? If so, it’s almost time to strap on the running shoes, as the Blackall 100 is on again this October 24 and 25. With two events – 50km or 100km – to choose from, along trails winding through the forests of the Blackall Ranges, past spectacular waterfalls and pristine scenic lookouts, it’s fast becoming one of the premier events of its type in Australia. Organised by the local events company Run Queensland, the run is expected to draw about 500 participants from all levels of ability to experience the thrill and challenge of trail running. Co-Director Brett Standring says that they have improved the event from last year’s success and the conditions should be perfect. “While the 100km and 50km courses will be challenging, we will ensure that running conditions will be safe and controlled, so that it will suit experienced runners, as well as those who just want a unique opportunity to run along some of the most picturesque trails in Australia,” he said. Brett, along with fellow Co-Director Alun Davies, is a seasoned endurance trail runner, competing in many marathons, 100km and 100 mile events throughout Australia. Their company, Run Queensland, has been organising trail running events locally at Wild Horse Mountain, Mount Beerwah and Rainbow Beach and have built a reputation for organising outstanding trail running events.

Business Local News News

Jo Jones knows about cake Mother of three Jo Jones, a licenced food operator with Sunshine Coast Council, runs her own cake making business, as well as offering local cake decorating classes. Recently she has expanded her business to offer a full range of celebration and wedding cake supplies - all from her Glass House Mountains home. The business idea originally came about four years ago when Jo was looking for a christening cake and was unable to find someone who made them locally. Around the same time, Jo started to make birthday cakes. She enjoyed it so much she invested in private instruction and was prompted

to consider providing a local service. After about two years of making cakes for kids and friends, Jo delved into creating wedding cakes, and the business grew through word of mouth. Jo enjoyed the challenge and it enabled her to work from home with young kids. Since starting her business she has made literally hundreds of cakes to order. Her original dream was to locally supply cakes but as time went by, more and more people were asking about decorating tips - so Jo decided to offer cake decorating classes and also set up a celebration and wedding cake decorating and

supply business. Her new home-based store has everything to bake a cake from scratch, from tins and utensils, to cake mixers, icings and decorative items and stands. If you would like to find out more contact Jo on 0414 530 978, like her World of Cake Facebook page or email worldofcake@westnet.com.au.

Hideaway offers stellar service

Three generations of Pitt family - Talin, Aramaya, Steve, Frankie and Wayne

Happy first birthday Hinterland Sports Hinterland Sports are about to mark the milestone of celebrating their first year of business at their Beerwah store. It has been a rewarding 12 months for the family owned and operated sports store, and they are thrilled with the support, that the small but growing Hinterland community has shown them. In setting up their business, the aim was to establish a local destination that the community could go to for all their sporting gear, sportswear and apparel. Since opening they have already secured great support from the local sporting clubs as well as the general public. Working together as a family unit has been a great collaborative experience for the three generations of Pitt family that work at the store. Their hope is to keep growing from what has been learnt in the last 12 months and to continue to sustain the business by providing a service for the community into the future. Come down and help Hinterland Sports celebrate on Saturday, September 12, from 8.00am -2.00pm with surprise giveaways, vouchers and loyalty rewards. 49 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah 5494 0254.

Congratulations to the owners of the Beerwah Hideaway - Jen and Simon whose B & B business was recently recognised for their outstanding customer satisfaction 2015 with a Stellar Stays award. This award goes to the top 3% of hotels worldwide that are featured on the Hotels Combined Accommodation website which is a hotel comparison website. The results are generated from the customer reviews / feedback. The Hideaway received a rating of 9.43 out of a possible 10 from 150 reviews and having matched every criterion. Jen and Simon purchased the business from long-time owner Tony and the late Irene Sacre only two and a half years ago, so they are really proud to receive this recognition. At last week’s Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce AGM held at the Hideaway’s restaurant, President Andrew Prescott congratulated the couple on their impressive achievement. U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year

Every year the Leukaemia foundation of Queensland runs a competition throughout licensed venues all over Queensland called the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year. If you haven’t heard about it, it is nothing to do with how beautiful the bartender is, but it is an opportunity to show others the ‘Understanding Generous Likeable You’ (U.G.L.Y). This year Marni from the Beerwah Hotel has taken up the job, and along with her assistant Cassie, has been out and about drumming up donations to use as raffle prizes at the pub’s big entertainment night on Friday, September 11. Tickets are $5.00 and will be on sale throughout the week. Every $80.00 raised assists the Leukaemia Foundation in providing one night’s free accommodation for someone with blood cancer and their carer. This vital service provides a home-away-from-home for regional families who need to relocate to be close to their treatment centre. The girls would like to thank both the Beerwah and Palmwoods Hotels, Healthy Guru, Amarashakti Day Spa, Beerwah Hair and Beauty, Eclectic Dreams, Mrs Browns, Little Mutz Cutz, Glasshouse Newsagency and Beerwah Discount Tyres and Batteries. They also have collection tins at the hotel and their bottle shops so don’t forget to put some coins in the tins if you’re heading to one of their locations in Beerwah, Mooloolah or Glass House Mountains. Phone scammers active locally

Last week another scam doing the rounds was reported to us by Glenda Halpin from Beerwah. It’s the over-charged bank fee reclaim scam that has been circulating for many years. Glenda said that she was telephoned by someone claiming that she was owed money as her bank had overcharged her for banking fees. The caller seemed very real to Glenda, as they knew her name, address and what bank she used. When asked to confirm her details by reading out her bank account card number, she was advised that someone from ‘the government’ would contact her back to arrange for the payment to be made. Glenda became suspicious and contacted her bank who said that the call was a scam and to not provide any further details. Glenda then cancelled that account, just to be safe. According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Scamwatch website, the next stage would have been that Glenda would have been asked to pay a small fee or taxes in order for the claim to be processed. The ACCC gives the following advice to protect yourself. Verify the identity of the contact by calling the relevant organisation directly – find them through an independent source such as a phone book or online search. Do not use the contact details they provide. Do an internet search using the names or exact wording of the phone call/ letter / email to check for any references to a scam – many scams can be identified this way. Remember, government departments will never contact you asking you to pay money upfront in order to claim a fee or rebate. Never send money or give credit card details, online account details or copies of personal documents to anyone you don’t know and never by email. Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for up-front payment via money order, wire transfer or international funds transfer. Protect your identity — your personal details are private and invaluable; keep them away from scammers. For example, in the case of this scam, don’t complete online forms attached to the reclaim offer. Report the scam to the Scamwatch (www.scamwatch.gov.au).

World leading rust protection for your car Family owned and operated AAA Detailing Beerwah would like their customers to know about a fantastic electronic rust protection product that protects your whole vehicle. Effective, efficient, reliable and of a high quality; Rust Stop RS-5 offers 24 hour protection for every single metal element in cars, 4WD, utes, trucks and buses. 100% of the metal is protected both inside and out including the spots that sprays cannot reach. With a separate two-channel output, Rust Stop RS-5 gives intelligent protection where you need it most combining two proven technologies that make the product effective in both wet and dry conditions. This product is made under rigorous quality control in South Africa and designed by certified engineers with over 40 years experience in electronic rust protection and prevention.

Backed by independent test results, Rust Stop RS-5 can even help control existing rust from spreading via its electronic rust control. The product uses less battery current than most vehicle alarm systems and will not interfere with other electrical installations. Traditional spray coatings only protect the particular area they cover. They are prone to be worn off and need to be maintained on a regular basis. Electronic rust proofing will complement any other undercoating or spray on type rust proofing – increasing your protection. The electronic rust proofing involves a straight forward installation process that can be transferred from vehicle to vehicle if required. The product is available in various models to suit the vehicle size, corrosive conditions and battery voltage. If you have a car that is less than two years from manufacture date, customers will automatically get a 10 year warranty with their electronic rust protection product. Rust Stop RS-5 successfully combines both impressed current and sacrificial anode rust protection technologies to overcome the limitations of classic cathodic protection to help prevent rust on vehicles. Basically, Rust Stop RS-5 works like a ‘rust magnet’ attracting electrons that would otherwise be rusting your vehicle. Rust Stop RS-5 Anodes (rust magnets) then corrode, instead of your vehicle – giving visual proof that the system is preventing rust. The product works because Rust Stop RS-5

uses a special partially conductive tape on the anodes (rust magnets) which acts as a constant electrolyte ensuring conductivity and protection in both wet and dry conditions. The tape is specially made graphite based, open cell partially conductive tape which allows the positive 45v to be held, but still allows current to pass through. The tape becomes a constant electrolyte in wet and dry conditions. Because it is open-cell, the tape also responds to any moisture present, even atmospheric humidity and increases conductivity and protection when needed most. For the month of September, AAA Detailing Beerwah is offering customers a special offer of Rust Stop RS-5 supply and install for only $450.00. Some of our elderly customers are great fun and they always have wonderful stories to tell.” Since starting with IGA, Larissa has continually learnt more about what makes her customers happy and how to provide exceptional customer service through her ongoing training with her Customer Service Manager Julie, who is an excellent role model. School News Students test their Spanish skills

Contributed by Deb Ives Beerwah State School students from Years 5 and 6 recently attended the Sunshine Coast Speech Contest at the University of the Sunshine Coast. They took part in the Spanish Speech contest. They had to stand before a panel of two judges, reciting Spanish and then respond to questions spoken in Spanish. Beerwah State School came

Principal Janet Austin, Joshua, Poppy, Tiarni, Mackenzie, Morgan, and Trinity

away with astounding results! In the Year 5 category Mackenzie won 1st prize, Tiarni won 2nd prize, while Joshua and Morgan were both highly commended. Year 6 student Trinity was also recognised with a highly commended award. Under the direction of their Spanish teacher Emi Obara the students all received a small bag full of Spanish goodies for their participation. Principal Janet Austin, along with family members, was there to support the students. Spanish is taught in the classroom from Year 2, and this opportunity for students to practice their language skills in this competition with schools from across the Sunshine Coast region was perfect for these keen students eager to improve their Spanish skills.

Learning with ‘Impact’

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Every week for an hour or more, a group of selected students from Mooloolah State School access literacy and numeracy experiences through a web conference. Their online teacher from the Brisbane School of Distance Education provides them with instruction and a range of extension opportunities aimed at sharpening their skills in writing or problem solving. Students can also independently access activities and resources at home, consolidating the learning that occurred during the web conference. This is what two of the students think about learning in the 21st century: Alyssa (writing): "Impact is an exciting online learning activity. It is special because you learn and communicate with children from different schools. You can share your work and thoughts with other children. The amazing online teacher provides you with fantastic comments and you develop better writing skills. I think Impact is a great way to learn." Maddy (problem solving):" Impact is a challenging and exciting project that we do with Mr Soni, our online teacher. We work and communicate with other schools and teachers."

By Cliff Schnick, GMAN The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) is a local not-for-profit community group run by volunteers whose primary focus is on the Glass House Mountains local environment and its natural beauty. As part of their AGM held on the weekend, an important milestone was celebrated to honour Gwen Malcolm. Gwen stepped down as President from the Management Committee this year, having served on the committee in its various roles for 26 years … a remarkable achievement! It’s a record unlikely to be shared by too many community groups served by volunteers. Gwen Malcolm and her During this long period of time, Gwen’s ‘thank you’ paintings dedication and willingness to service has been given with endless energy and enthusiasm. While GMAN’s achievements are not always visible within the community at first glance, the organisation’s volunteers have had their hands in a variety of activities such as revegetation projects for degraded areas, countless plant sales of species endemic to the area, establishing walking trails, supporting trail runs, the promotion, propagation and distribution of Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vines, establishing a koala food tree plantation, and many more of a similar nature. In addition, GMAN is a voice speaking up about things that are harmful or a threat to our environment. And on each occasion, it would be fair to say that Gwen was either instrumentally active behind the scenes or she was leading from the front. As well as being awarded a GMAN Life Membership, while stepping down from committee responsibilities, Gwen will continue to be busy and involved in the many other GMAN projects and activities.

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc.

We care about our environment

Mooloolah Meanderings

Last month we had two international High School student groups from Japan who helped plant Australian native trees along Mooloolah River and Adlington Creek. Both groups were given a talk on the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, our native frogs and information on some of the issues associated with the environment in Australia. With 53 students, six teachers and five Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRW&L) helpers, we planted, mulched and watered 325 trees. These trees will help to shade the river and support good water quality, help stop erosion along our waterways and filter out any potential pollutants. The species chosen were pioneer edge trees with slower growing food and honey producing trees to provide shelter and food for local wildlife, including bees. Pet registration time again Pet owners will start receiving their annual Sunshine Coast Council animal registration renewal notices in the mail this week reminding them of the September 30, 2015 due date. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said pet registration is focused on safety and security and plays an important role in responsible pet ownership. “All cats and dogs must be registered every year and wear a Council-issued registration tag when in public,” Cr McKay said. “Registration is easy and helps Council to identify pets if they stray and reunite them quickly with their owners. It also helps Council provide a variety of animal management activities and facilities across the Sunshine Coast Council region including the pound facilities, dog off leash parks, proactive patrols and education programs such as PetPEP." Owners of a desexed and microchipped cat have the option to choose lifetime registration for a $75 one-off fee or continuing with an annual registration of $13. To encourage and reward responsible pet owners, significant reductions in registration fees apply for desexed and microchipped dogs and cats, and for pensioners. Registration is also free for pets under six months old. For more information on animal registration, visit Council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

About rental properties From Hinterland Accounting Services I have recently purchased an investment property what can I claim? Deductions could include the following items: • advertising for tenants • bank charges • body corporate fees and charges • borrowing expenses • capital works • cleaning • council rates • decline in value of depreciating assets • gardening and lawn mowing • insurance • interest expenses • land tax • legal expenses – only in certain circumstances • pest control • phone • property agent fees and commissions • repairs and maintenance • stationery and postage • travel undertaken to inspect or maintain the property or to collect the rent • water charges. If part of your property is used to earn rent, you can claim expenses relating to only that part of the property. You will need to work out a reasonable basis to apportion the claim. As a general guide, apportionment should be made on a floor-area, that is, by reference to the floor area of that part of the residence solely occupied by the tenant, together with a reasonable figure

for tenant access to the general living areas, including garage and outdoor areas if applicable. A Quantity Surveyors report is a report to produce a tax depreciation schedule of the plant and equipment and capital works deductions of the rental property. By obtaining a Quantity Surveyors report you can help maximise your tax refund. Also the cost of producing the report is tax deductible. You must include rental bond money as income if you become entitled to retain it. For instance, because a tenant defaulted on the rent, or because damage to your property required repairs. Income and expenses for a rental property must be attributed to each owner according to their legal interest in the property (as per the Titles Office details), regardless of any agreement between co-owners, either oral or in writing. Property available for part-year rental. If you use your property for both private and assessable income-producing purposes, you cannot claim a deduction for the portion of any expenditure that relates to your private use. Examples of properties you may use for both private and income-producing purposes are holiday homes and time-share units. In cases such as these you cannot claim a deduction for any expenditure incurred for those periods when the home or unit was used by you, your relatives or your friends for private purposes. Rates for example paid for a full year would need

4 Considerations for Self-Employed Home Loans Being self-employed comes with its own unique set of challenges, not only in terms of how you conduct day-to-day business, but also when applying for a loan. Here are some of the major considerations that you’ll need to take into account before applying for a home loan. 1. Specific documentation Each loan provider will have different criteria you’ll need to meet when making an application. Generally speaking you will be asked to show evidence of your Business Activity Statements for the past 12 months.

2. An attractive lending prospect As with any home loan, a lender will take a look at your finances and determine whether you’re a safe bet to lend to. Put yourself in their shoes – are you showing yourself in the best light? 3. Be aware of any restrictions Self-employed loans are similar to many other mortgage products in that they come with a variety of different restrictions. For example, you might not be able to switch to another product within a given period, or there could be a cap on repayments.

4. What mortgage rates are available? Provided you can supply the documentation that home loan lenders want to see, you should find there are various favourable mortgage rates available. The RBA has maintained the historically low cash rate of 2 per cent since May, which has brought some competitive products to the market.

Living The last week in August was a busy time for the Friends of Bankfoot House volunteers. Community interest in the heritage site is growing rapidly since the opening of the new Mary Grigor Centre. Many locals, largely unaware of the historic fabric of the old house, have dropped in to find out more. No doubt the gloriously crisp Spring weather has encouraged others to take in the breathtaking views of the ancient Glass House Mountains. Recently a busload of 66 Year 3 students from Caloundra Primary, along with their teachers and a number of parents, visited the house as part of their local history studies. Pioneering life is easily illustrated by the volunteer guides as the students are rotated through the range of learning experiences within the Bankfoot House heritage precinct. For the first time, school text books and student work books from the early 20th century were out on display, all of which were once used by the children of Bankfoot House. These created a lot of interest from present day students. On the following Sunday the house was open for general public viewing and attracted 43 visitors, including nine children. A firm favourite of all children is watching the magic of the pianola when the ivory piano keys appear to move all by themselves and the random holes on paper rolls dictate the tune they are hearing. A film maker has also been on site to record the life of Mary Grigor through the memories of her descendents and through the discovery of many house objects and personal items which belonged to the Grigor family in the 19th century. Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@ bankfoothouse.org. Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help. It is estimated that approximately 85% of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today on 5494 0499 Beerwah, or visit www.adjusttolife.com.au Business feature

Kaz and Rob from Soulqi are excited to be attending an upcoming intensive Brisbane seminar with world renowned Acupuncturist and teacher Tsuyoshi Shimamura. Focusing on the Shonishin paediatric acupuncture and therapy teachings, they will expand on their already extensive paediatric knowledge. As always, they will be sharing their learning with the whole Soulqi team. Children of all ages can benefit from acupuncture, and from birth to six year olds there are no needles used at all. Children respond very positively to these sessions, and a treatment only takes 10-15 minutes, and costs only $40. Through ongoing research Kaz has discovered problems with the spleen and stomach can affect the whole body, so working on a healthy gut is a key part to good health. Mothers can even pass on issues to their babies, so regular sessions during pregnancy can help to counteract and avoid bubs discomfort. Kaz is also very passionate about the quality of food you eat; by avoiding over processed and products high in sugar and instead choosing organic, in-season locally sourced fruits and veggies, you can give your body and mind a daily boost – and they taste great too! For more details on how acupuncture can assist you and your family’s health and general well-being, please phone or call in today.

Re: Disabled access

Thanks to the letterwriter for raising the issue of disabled access at the new entrance to Turner Park. I'm pleased to be able to reassure you that better access for all is a committed part of the master-plan and I would not have supported it without it. It is worth noting that access is already better than it was before as the top ‘plaza’ area is compliant and is at least a start to improving the park’s accessibility features. The ramping you requested wouldn't fit into this modest first stage, and better access to the lower table area still needs to be provided. This is committed to in the design and will be delivered in the future stages. In regard to the car parking issue you raised in the newly opened section of the Beerwah Village shopping area, I asked council officers to review the approval conditions and went and checked out all the bays with the blue symbols myself. I can confirm that although they are different sizes they do comply with the Australian standards applicable at the time. The new car parking bays marked with blue disabled sign/s share a hatched area (effectively providing extra width) either alongside or inbetween the bays, whereas the older ones are simply wider with no hatched areas. I personally believe the older wider ones are easier to understand, but obviously the Federal Government have approved the new standards, and have the power to do so. Cr Rick Baberowski Division 1

Beerwah NBN

Your coverage of the Beerwah NBN meeting (GC&MNews, September 2) was interesting - more so because of the extraordinary quote of the new Qld NBN Corporate Affairs Manager, Kylie Lindsay, to GC&M News. "It was fantastic to see such a large turnout of interested locals. Based on the feedback we received residents are largely supportive of the fixed wireless network proposal..." I think Kylie is given to great hyperbole in the tradition of NBN spokespersons. The reality is that some 35 people attended that meeting, based on estimates from locals. Compare this to near 130 that attended the Peachester

meeting in June and the some 300 to 400 that attended the first of the Maleny NBN meetings last year. At the Beerwah meeting about five people were actually from Peachester and a smaller number were from Maleny (Beerwah population was estimated around 5,000 in 2011). Reports from the Maleny Group NBN information display outside Beerwah Community Hall was that up to 50% of locals coming out after viewing NBN's display were dissatisfied with the level of information. This is the NBN pattern - they hold information meetings, sometimes as much as 20 to 30 minutes’ drive away from the proposed tower site (as happened in the case of the Hunchy Road site) and then issue glowing reports of the popular support based on nothing. In NSW one town of 350 people petitioned with 96% of the town opposed to the NBN tower, but NBN reps told local council that there was 'overwhelming support' for their proposed tower. NBN's Kylie Lindsay looks to be the right person for the job. Richard Giles, Conondale

Bright day for Daffodil sales

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the shops, business and schools that sold the display box merchandise. The businesses are from the area of Elimbah, Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough. A very big thank you to all the willing volunteers that helped sell the fresh daffodils and merchandise on the stalls over the Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Without these volunteers we would not be able to raise the amazing amount of $10,400.00 for Cancer Council. May I also thank the Beerwah Fruit Market and The IGA stores for allowing me to store the Daffodils in their cold rooms, this is very much appreciated. Thank you all for supporting Daffodil Day and Cancer Council. Everyone’s help and support is sincerely appreciated. Glenda Halpin, Daffodil Day Co-ordinator Glasshouse Country

Wonderful township

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful township of Beerwah. Whilst the main purpose of the visit was to spend time with family I also acted as one of the support crew for the Beerwah team of runners and walkers in the Bridge to Brisbane. Our team raised funds for the Queensland Eye Institute for research. I would very much like to congratulate not only all the participants (all finished in record times) but all the locals, local businesses and community groups who unselfishly donated muchneeded funds, food and drinks - and a big well done to Gary our bus driver who got us there and back with a minimum of fuss. It is so wonderful to see small communities pull together. Let’s start training for next year team. Kerry Redman Newcastle

Mary Cairncross Cafe

Last week I had the opportunity to sit in the sun and look out over a very clear view of the Glass House Mountains (on a Tuesday better known as a work day) and have a quiet lunch on my own. It was the first day of Spring and the weather was just gorgeous. I headed to Mary Caincross Café and got myself a lovely Mocha (cross between

Great eats and treats in Maleny! coffee and hot chocolate) served with an optional marshmallow. This was complemented with an average sized serving of the Wicked Chocolate Cake and cream. Apparently there are some people who choose the café’s signature cake as something to be shared, but sadly I was on my own. I didn’t want to waste it or the opportunity

Contributed by Patricia Bradford The August meeting saw president Coral Beutel welcoming members to Nessie Pratten’s garden. Nessie who is in her 90s gave us a brief history of her garden which is in the process of a make-over. She explained that drainage was a big problem at the start. Some new landscaping has been done, with more bromeliads planted, making it easier to maintain. She does receive plenty of help from family. Thank you Nessie, for welcoming us to your garden and showing it off. Angus Joyce showed off his old fashioned Freesias, which have smaller flowers and the best perfume, given to him by his grandmother. Our Friendship Day was a great success and a big thank you to all who put in the hard work. Some feedback from neighbouring Garden Clubs congratulated us on a great day, and the excellence of our guest speakers. Results of the competition bench for July: 1st Coral Beutel 26 points, 2nd Trish Bradford 19 points. Please note: Our next meeting will be held in the garden of Gordon and Cath Howitt, on Thursday, September 17 at 9.30am. Bring along lunch, mug and a chair. Visitors and new members welcome. Leptospermum ‘Cardwell’

Leptospermum polygalifolium ssp tropicum Spring is the month for wildflowers in SE QLD and one of our most beautiful displays is that of our Leptospermums or Tea Trees. Leptospermum polygalifolium is found from Cape York to SE NSW. This time of year they are exploding with masses of white five petalled flowers. This mass flowering will continue right throughout Spring. Leptospermum ‘Cardwell’ is a selection from a subspecies that grows around Cardwell in NQ. It is much bushier and does not grow as sparse or tall as our local form. It grows approximately 2m x 1.5m. In a garden situation it is highly ornamental with weeping foliage and will attract many species of insects when flowering. These in turn will attract many species of insectivorous birds. Many small birds will also find refuge inside Cardwell’s dense foliage. Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am until 4.00pm. . In the Garden Backyard Stickybeak with Brownie

with Brownie

Rose Dene, Curramore The ‘Gardening on the Edge’ event held every June by the Maleny Garden Club is truly the best opportunity for local gardeners (and those other poor unfortunates who haven’t yet found out how awesome gardening is) to be inspired, pick up some ideas, and have a sticky-beak about other gardeners' properties. This is the last in a series of looking at Nice co mb some of the gardens from this year’s event. water fe ination of a ature an ‘Rose Dene’, the property of John and d hedge Judith Mains at Curramore, is a testament to how a garden and associated landscapes can be created to be functional, productive and eye-catching. After purchasing the property in 2004, they cleverly didn’t start any garden changes for 12 months, so that they could assess the sun, shade, rain, winds, soils and other conditions that they would need to contend with through the various seasons.

Inspiring spiral hedge Many of the gardens have a tropical theme, which is perfectly complemented by Balinese-styled ornaments and structures – avoiding an often made mistake of mixing a garden theme with a completely different decoration theme. Not every gardener can have their very own resident Bower Bird, but it does remind you that gardens are also for the wildlife as much as for us humans … they were there first. John and Judith have included various plantings and settings which are bee, bird and reptile friendly, which in turn brings the garden and nature together nicely.

The happy henhouse Garden ornaments can be fun

Organic vegetables are easy to grow

Creating an almost blank canvas, only leaving the large trees, John and Judith started by placing the vegetable garden in the spot which received the best amount of light. And by locating it in the centre of the block, it becomes a focal point, from which other gardens can be planned. The large chook run sits on the side edge of the property meaning that it isn’t imposing on sight-lines through the landscape, but is close enough to the house and veggie garden for the girls to be supplied with scraps. A striking feature at the front of the property is the spiral maze hedge, which was created using 180 Duranta plants set 30cm apart. Another idea they have used is to create a garden room leading off the back of the house, using rows of tall hedged coffee plants. Coffee takes well to being hedged, forming a dense evergreen hedge of large leaved shrubs. It has the added benefit of producing coffee beans – which John harvests and processes to make his very own organic blend.

Coffee used as hedges The Mains will be opening their garden again this year on the weekend of October 3 and 4 between 9.00am and 4.00pm each day. Entrance for adults is $6.00 and children are free. The funds raised will be donated to RACQ Care Flight. The garden is located at 370 Curramore Road, Maleny.

Bolstering the fight against ice

Reed Street update

Make no mistake, ice is a problem for our local towns. Ice is far more potent, far more dangerous, and far more addictive than any other illegal drug. The Commonwealth Government continues to increase resources to combat the harm ice causes. You can help. If you have any information relating to drug distribution please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. You can read more on the problem of ice, and the initiatives we are working on to combat it, at www.malbrough.com.au/ice

Readers would have seen the update on Reed Street in last week’s edition of Glasshouse Country and Maleny News – it’s great we are finally seeing some progress! I acknowledge the hard work from many in our community in getting TMR to address our safety concerns at this intersection. To think we are mere months away from a better traffic solution is very pleasing! I also extend my thanks to Lea and Brownie from Glasshouse Country and Maleny News for their dedication to keeping the community informed. During the construction phase I will have regular updates on my website and Facebook so make sure you follow along to stay in the know!

Free Trade Agreements The Free Trade Agreements (FTA) we have signed are all about creating more local jobs. China, Japan and Korea are important trading partners for Queensland. In 2014 these countries accounted for 42% of total Queensland trade (exports plus imports), worth over $35 billion. In just one example of the benefit of the FTA, Macadamia Marketing International have reported that since the introduction of the Korean FTA exports have increased from 100 tonnes last year to 250 tonnes this year and believe that in five years they will be selling 1,000 tonnes into the Korean market. This is great news for our local macadamia farmers.

Review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct A reminder for local growers that submissions to the review of the horticulture code of conduct close on September 18. The terms of reference for the review and details on how to make a submission can be found at www.agriculture.gov.au/ag-farm-food/hort-policy/ code-of-conduct.

Recall of Samsung top loading washing machines Do you, or someone you know, own a Samsung washing machine? There are still over 69,000 Samsung washing machines out in the community that have not been checked following a mandatory recall by Samsung of six of their top loading washing machines. These machines are being recalled because they can overheat and in the worst case scenario catch on fire! Make sure you remind your neighbours, friends and family members to check their machines too. You can check your machine at www.samsung.com/au/washingmachinerecall/

Have your say on Fixed 4 Year terms On the home page of my new website, you will find a link to have your say on 4 Year fixed Parliamentary terms. We hear about this pretty regularly as politicians in Queensland and I believe the time has come to ask our community what your thoughts are on this important topic. It might interest you to know that the Queensland State Parliament and the Commonwealth Parliament are the only two in Australia which are not elected for four year terms. There is also a flyer on my website which you can print to read more information. I think it’s important we have the conversation on this one and I will be sure to report back any outcomes from our survey.

Mobile office in Glasshouse Mountains During September and October I will be out and about with my mobile office – all dates and times are listed on the website but I will be in Glass House Mountains at the Visitor Information Centre from 7.30am to 9.00am on Wednesday, September 23, if you need to catch up with me about anything.

Maleny Senior Citizens I recently attended the Maleny Senior Citizen AGM and it was wonderful to see Florence Woods being recognised as a life member of the group. Congratulations also to the returning President Lynda Burgess for taking on the job again. There were a number of special guests on the day including the Maleny State High School captains.

Boost the Bruce If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to sign the Boost the Bruce petition and help us in our fight to upgrade the Bruce Highway, fixing the bottlenecks and widening it to six lanes from Pine Rivers to Caloundra. Sign up at www.boostthebruce.com.au/

Mooloolah breakfast meeting

The meeting was well attended by locals last week. A special thanks to Constable Susan Lowndes our local police Community Liason Officer and Police Volunteer Vikki for attending and listening to local issues. These matters include Brandenburg Road, reduction of the speed limit in Bray Road and hooning on the Mooloolah Recreation grounds. The Mooloolah community also raised issues around the Mooloolah Pool and the need for more funding to relieve Education Queensland’s expenditure on the facility. A request was also received for an off leash dog park and questions were raised about the next stage of works on Glenview Road. These matters will be followed up and reported back to the next meeting. I am pleased to advise I will provide divisional funds towards the installation of new bollards soon at Mooloolah Rec Reserve to help keep it free for its purpose.

Community comes out winners There are 87 not-for-profit community organisations that will receive $762,906 to help meet their operational expenses this financial year. The Community Partnership Funding Program will assist a number of local organisations including: Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc, Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club Inc, Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club Inc, Friends of Pattemore House, Maleny History Preservation and Restoration Society Inc, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society, Montville Chamber of Commerce, Maleny Visitor Information Centre, Maleny & District Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Arts Connect Inc, Maleny Show Society Inc, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Association Inc, Maleny Community Centre Inc and Montville Village Association. This program will help ensure these organisations continue to operate and invest their time in service delivery and on building long term sustainability.

Wild dogs Wild dogs are a serious issue and failure to control them can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Council and Biosecurity Queensland help support local area community groups to undertake proactive wild dog baiting programs as landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land. The next program for participating properties will be held from September 14 – October 9.

A quick heads up to local residents

Council will be removing a large Blackbutt on the road reserve adjacent to Glenview Road at Glenview due to a risk assessment indicating it is in poor structural condition.

Rev Deacon Tim Shanahan - Catholic Church

It is still a beautiful world The Desiderata is a poem written by an American lawyer and poet, Max Ehrmann, in 1927. That poem achieved popularity in the late sixties and early seventies, when spoken-word versions were made and it was also recorded as a song. The poem is growing in popularity again, as it really offers a guide for how to live one’s life. With all of the violence, hate-crimes, and extremists acts of terror happening in our world, it is easy to wonder if only evil is at work. But there is so much good happening too. God is at work in the world! Look around and see how many people rally in times of crisis, to assist those in need; how many charitable organisations are at work; how many social justice and human rights groups are working hard to help those in need. Whether they are aware of it or not, that is God at work in our world! GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

One morning recently I was hanging out the washing and was worrying about some ministryrelated matters, when suddenly I looked up and saw a beautiful King parrot sitting on a small tree branch not far from me. In the winter sunlight, it was a truly beautiful sight. I had never seen such a parrot around our house before. It stayed for a minute or two and then it flew away, joining its mate in flight. To me, as a Christian, that was a little gift from God – a reminder to stop and appreciate the beauty that is around us. Not just the beauty of nature, as created by God, but to also appreciate the beauty that is in so many people. That little experience, though brief, set me up for the day! As it says in the Desiderata, ‘therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.’

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Airplane Jokes 1. On an evening flight from Australia, the lead flight attendant for the cabin crew nervously made the following painful announcement... “Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so very sorry but it appears that there has been a terrible mix-up prior to takeoff, by our airport catering service. We have 103 passengers on board and, unfortunately, only 40 dinner meals. I truly apologise for this mistake and inconvenience. "When passengers' muttering had died down, she continued,"anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else can eat will receive free, unlimited drinks for the duration of the flight." Her next announcement

came 90 minutes later. “If anyone would like to change their minds, we still have 40 dinners available." 2. I was working, flying a sightseeing small aircraft. When the first group of tourists arrived I asked them, “have you ever flown on a small airplane before?” “No!” they replied. So I took out a pack of gum and told them all to take a piece to keep their ears from popping. After we landed, I asked everyone if they enjoyed the flight, and one blonde lady comes over and asks, “that gum did wonders, but how do I get it out of my ears?” Submitted by Hugh, Beerwah
