Hi Everyone This has been another big week for letters arriving at Glasshouse Country News and not surprisingly there are quite a few about the Beerwah RSL Club. To make space for them we have had to postpone the second part to our School Captain’s series where we are introducing all of our school leaders to readers. I am sure that there will be some disappointed parents and grandparents when they can’t find them in this week’s edition, we do apologise but will ensure that they are in the March 30 edition. However with only two weeks to go until the RSL’s eviction we have made including reader’s letters on this topic a priority for this edition. As the time gets closer to the eviction date – the emotion is definitely running high with the Club members who are still grasping

What's Happening for a solution to bring about the best outcome for the RSL Sub-Branch, the Club and the community. Although the Sub-Branch have assured club members that the they will be opening the Beerwah RSL in a very short time frame it would appear that many members are questioning how the work that would be required could happen in such a short time. The one clear message I am hearing from the community is they want more information and a positive resolution. Regards,

Local commuters boycott rail services

Sunshine Coast rail commuters who felt that they had been left with no choice but to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with Translink and the Transport Minister participated in a boycott of rail services last Thursday. Those that could not boycott the service were encouraged to attach messages of support for the boycott onto themselves or their bags. The bright yellow flyers made it clear the views of the commuter - they want cheaper fares. Toni Carroll is a local who has been commuting for nine and a half years. She was at the Glass House Mountains railway station even earlier than usual on Thursday morning reminding commuters how important it was for them to send the message. Toni said she used to pay $2,300.00 to travel annually to work, now it costs her $4,000.00, and for people who travel from the coast to catch a train, some are spending up to $60.00 extra on top of their train travel. “The most recent increase in ticket prices has been 15 per cent, and I certainly haven’t had a pay increase of 15 per cent in the past year,” she said. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, has lent his full support to the commuters’ campaign and has expressed his disappointment that they have had to resort to this. “When Translink representatives had a community information session last December they did little to address the concerns that commuters raised with the possible timetable changes.

“This has fostered a lot of anger within the commuter community and has left many dissatisfied travellers. “Then to top it all off, the commuters are hit with price hikes that are really unjustifiable. It’s no wonder they have been driven to this sort of action,” Mr Powell said. Mr Powell has been working very closely with commuters from all over the Sunshine Coast since the proposed timetable changes in November 2010. “I have written to the Minister several times, at one point we even asked the Minister to attend a forum to hear directly from commuters, I might add she turned this invitation down. I have also sponsored an E-Petition calling on the Government to preserve the current timetable and have recently tabled 976 signed petitions. “I congratulate this group of people for having the courage to stand up for something they truly believe in. Nothing beats people power”. When GCNews followed up with Andrew Powell after the boycott, he told us he was pleased the Minister for Transport had announced that she would be establishing a committee to review the periodical tickets for monthly, quarterly and annual travel. "This is a good first step but viewing and implementing change are not the same, my hope is that she will listen to issues and address the commuters concerns," he said.

Local announces ‘Pick Rick’ campaign for council’s Division 1

Local of 20 years, Rick Baberowski, has announced that he will be campaigning for Division 1 in the next council election.

“From Crohamhurst to Little Mountain, Division 1 has exceptional natural assets and a terrific mix of rural and urban communities, but we are being left in the shadows of the higher profile council divisions,” he said. Rick said that given the ‘freight train of growth’ coming to South East Queensland, Division 1 is in danger of being dictated to by the local and state governments. “The stronger we are as a divisional community the more effective we will be in designing our own futures and competing for resources,” he said. Rick has 25 years experience in project delivery in the public and private sector, most recently 10 years as a senior planner in Caboolture and Moreton Bay councils. He is a former president of Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, a long standing member of the University of the Sunshine Coast Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Advisory Committee and a director of Museum and Gallery Services Queensland.

Rick with his partner Karen, and son and daughter Huxley and Olivia in their home at Beerwah “As a resident, I believe that we all want Division 1 to fundamentally remain a great place to live. More of the community needs to be involved in the development debate. Our challenge is how we build viable, distinct and sustainable communities alongside the world-class iconic Glasshouse Mountains.” Rick said he is looking forward to announcing a range of campaign policy positions over the coming year after consulting with community members and groups across the division. He is planning to launch a campaign website shortly for feedback at www.pickrick.org.au and in the meantime invites emails to: rick.baberowski@gmail.com

Apology to Beerwah RSL Sub Branch In last week’s edition of GCNews we printed a media statement supplied by the Beerwah RSL Sub Branch, the statement was supplied in hard copy with all words spelt correctly. We agreed to use the document as it came in and not edit any of the wording. Unfortunately when the document was re-typed at our end there were typos in it and it was not put

through our normal proof reading process. These mistakes were entirely the fault of GCNews and we apologise to the RSL Subbranch for any embarrassment this has caused. As regular readers you would know that at GCNews we strive for perfection however on occasions human error does get in our way.

Local throwing hat into political ring Beerburrum resident, Ann Ross, recently announced her intention to stand as a candidate in the next Sunshine Coast Council election. We spoke to Ann to find out a little more about her and her views.

Ann is married to Jeff and they have two children, Anthony, 27 who is a graduate engineer, and Christine, 24, who is graduating as a doctor at the end of this year and plans to continue her training at Nambour Hospital next year. Both attended schools in the local area. The family first moved to Beerwah in 1985, and in 1989 Ann and Jeff ran a mechanic business for seven years. After taking a working holiday (fruit picking) throughout Australia for 12 months, they knew that Glasshouse Country was where their

Ann Ross

future lay. They returned to the area and have owned and operated Beerburrum Service Centre for the last 13 years. Ann decided to run for Council after giving it careful consideration for a few years. “It’s something I’ve always been interested in, the community and primarily the railway towns. I think I can make a difference to our identity,” she said. Ann has been involved in various community groups over the years, including Rotary, Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce, Beerwah Ambulance Committee and was a founding committee member of Friends of Bankfoot House. Ann was also involved with the Interpretive Signage project in Beerburrum and the gaining of recognition for the Anzac Avenue of Trees. She also has a Diploma of Business and a Diploma with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Ann said there are various issues that she feels are important to Division 1 including the preservation and protection of our communities lifestyle, indentifying stand alone economy opportunities such as becoming a recreational vehicle friendly area, support for small business wanting to expand their operations, and last but not least, ensuring that the elderly and youth of this area receive the same council support available on the coast. Ann said she believes in the old philosophy that the community chooses someone they trust and respect, to voice their needs and wants to council and then work hand in hand with them to make those needs and wants a reality. “My aim is to learn as much about the area and its needs and wants over the next 12 months so that if I’m elected I’ll be able to make a difference from day one,” she said.

Tired of the same daily routine? Weeks becoming one long monotonous blur? If you want some colour, vibrancy and an uplifting beat in your life then come along to the Baala Baajo’s inspirational drum and dance classes. Baala Baajo, who won the 2007 Queensland Multicultural Achiever Award Winner for excellence in the arts, comprises of African artists, Nii Armah, from Ghana, and Sam Okoth, from Kenya, (and current Glass House Mountains resident) who will be conducting the classes at the Glasshouse Mountains Community Hall from Monday, March 28 to Monday, May 16. Nii Armah and Sam Okoth came to Australia 10 years ago and formed Baala Baajo in 2005. They are accomplished singers, dancers and musicians, with a passion for the music and culture of their native countries. They not only run classes,

but perform at festivals and community events, conduct interactive team building and corporate events, drum making workshops, are available for weddings, birthday parties and more. Michele, Baala Baajo’s administration and booking officer, said, “people come (to classes) for a variety of different reasons; people come to get fit, some come to have fun, some to increase their skills in drumming and dance. A lot of people come back, there’s a really positive response, particularly on the Sunshine Coast area.” Michele said Baala Baajo always give their all. “They give all that energy and that cultural experience and love that they have for their profession. Nii Armah said to me on a number of occasions it’s about being able to share their culture and for them to be able to keep it alive, for themselves as well,” she said. Baala Baajo means ‘come sing, come dance’ so if that’s what you would like to do, classes will be held at the Glasshouse Mountains Community Hall, 8 Coonowrin Road. Classes for Drum are from 6.00pm to 7.00pm and dance from 7.15pm to 8.15pm. Prices are $15.00 per class or $25.00 for drum and dance. You can pay as you go, but if you book and pay for eight weeks in advance you will receive a discount. Drums are available for hire and purchase. For bookings or further information phone 3861 5951, mobile 0451 968 625, email info@baalabaajo.biz or visit www.baalabaajo.biz

Forty years service

Glenview JP Peter Annand recently received a certificate to acknowledge his 40 years of being a Justice of the Peace from the State member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle. Mr Annand said that the importance of being a JP was to help people deal with their issues and that he is very happy that it is on a volunteer basis. He witnesses mainly civil documents but he has noted over the years that these documents have become more and more complicated and that people simply don’t understand what they mean. He also advised that it is very important to check when you are witnessing a document that the person is who they say they are and to ask for, in many cases, photo identification.

“You take the role of JP on because you enjoy helping people. Many people have come back to me many times over the years and I have formed a number of friendships as a consequence,” he said. Congratulations and job well done!

Local team tackles Kathmandu Challenge Michael Sayer, 27, from Landsborough and team mate Timothy Davies, 25, from Maleny competed in this year’s Sunshine Coast leg of the Kathmandu Adventure Series on Saturday March, 19. It’s an extreme outdoor adventure race that involves navigating a 40 kilometre secret course by foot, mountain bike and kayak. The various courses can take between two and six hours to complete. It first began seven years ago, and the 2011 Kathmandu Adventure Series comprises 11 events throughout the year to be held at various places across Australia and New Zealand. Competitors can enter one event or all of them. The recent event was the third time Michael and Timothy have participated; their first time was the same Sunshine Coast leg last year. “We enjoyed it so much we thought we’d see where the next one was at,” said Michael. For Michael and Timothy it’s all about having fun. “A lot of people do it for the fun of it. Probably the biggest challenge last year was the amount of mud that there was,” said Michael. “For the bike and running leg, the mud was pretty thick and made things a bit tougher going. The best part is just getting out into the bush and getting lost and trying to find your way through all of the course" he said. Michael said he first decided to do it because he enjoyed trail running.

“Going for a run through the forestry and the mountain biking and kayaking all sort of appealed,” he said. While being physically fit is important, Michael isn’t fanatical about training. He goes running every second day, and bike riding on the weekends. Michael said being in a team definitely has its advantages as each person brings their own strengths. Michael’s is his orienteering skills and Timothy’s is his fittness. But he admits both could improve their kayaking skills. “My partner and I have never been very good at that, so we’re trying to improve, but we do it for fun so it doesn’t worry us too much,” he said. Family day care may be a good option for your child

Plenty of smiles and laughter at Family Day Care If you’re a parent looking at options for child care, remember there are family day care providers in our area, as well as child care centres. Family day care offers a home environment for a small number of children with each provider. Of the several providers in the local area, one of the newest is Lynsey Weil, who through the scheme accepts children into her home in Barbara Court, Beerwah.

Girls chase their dreams

Madi Thompson knows how to chase her dreams. The Year 6 student at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School has her sights set on making it to Nationals this year, and is now one step closer to her goal. She has just won the 2011 Sunshine Coast Primary Regional 11 years Girls Age Champion. Together with Year 5 St Paul’s student Kaylee McKeown, they will be heading to Brisbane with the rest of the Sunshine Coast Regional Team to swim at the Primary School State Championships from March 31 to April 2.

“I offer a homely environment for children – I believe kids’ personalities really come out in a small, home based group,” Lynsey said. She takes a maximum of four children at a time. Lynsey is fully qualified with a Certificate 3 in Child Care and Education, though she said she has probably learned more from her own children, Harry aged six and Cooper, three. This enthusiastic home educator is registered as a family day care provider with the Kath Dickson Family Centre, based in Toowoomba, that has an arm on the Sunshine Coast. Lynsey runs a daily program with the children in her care. The program includes indoor and outdoor play - painting, playdough, puzzles, arts and craft including finger painting and glitter glue and collage, riding bikes and trucks, cubbies, and lots more, including excursions to the library, parks and other places. “Every day there is mat time, when we talk about our day, read a book and do other things such as learning colours,” she said. Every day there is also a rest or quiet time, depending on each child’s needs.” Parents of children in family day care receive the Federal Government’s Child Care Benefit and can ask Lynsey for more information. Lynsey takes children aged from six weeks to 12 years and has vacancies on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Hours are from 7.00am to 6.00pm. Lynsey’s phone number is 0414 326 586.

Madi will be competing in all nine events, and Kaylee will swim in two. Both girls have swum personal bests several times over the last few weeks to reach this stage. Proud mums Louise Thompson and Sharon McKeown are ecstatic that all the hard work is paying off. They’re all at the pool for the girls’ two hour training sessions, three to four times every week. Fitting homework in around training is now something that comes naturally to both families.

Madi Thompson with her trophy

“We’re so proud of their achievements,” they said. “And after winning the trophy for the Sunshine Coast Primary Regional 11 years Girls Age Champion, Madi hasn’t stopped smiling!” Louise added.

The Hinterland Connects networking event is on again on April 5 and prior to the networking activities a free seminar will be presented entitled ‘Social Media – Friend or Foe’. Geoff Moller from VESTRA Business Advantage has recently mentored over 230 businesses across SEQ plus Geoff Moller, presenter consulted to many more over the last 12 months. He has helped them build their respective businesses using online strategies including the many facets of leveraging popular social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. “Although a number of social media websites can offer great opportunities for marketing, for others it can be a mystery, and for others an annoyance,” Geoff says. “Either way it’s about engaging in online conversations rather than advertising, the rules of marketing using social media are changing and many are having trouble using this new media to its best advantage.” Understanding the opportunities and pitfalls of the social media boom, how or if social media can be used for your business is really important in today’s business environment. If you would like to gain an insight and some understanding of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or YouTube and how they might apply to your business make sure you register and come along. It should be a very interesting topic for those of us still looking to demystify this new phenomenon. For more information and to register visit www.malenycommerce.org.au or phone Carrie on 0434 817 301.

Waste disgrace

Kev Almond of Kev’s Joinery and Shopfitters in Beerwah said the new state government industrial waste levy be introduced on December 1 this year is ‘disgraceful’. The new levy will apply to industrial waste going to landfill. It will not apply to households. Commercial, industrial, construction and demolition waste sent to landfill will attract the levy of $35.00 per tonne for general waste. The levy will be $50.00 and $150.00 per tonne for low hazard and high-hazard waste, respectively. The levy will apply to councils as well as to businesses. Kev said he has a two cubic metre bin that is emptied every week and already pays a levy of $10.00 within the cost of the bin. He also pays Council a waste levy. “Additional levy costs that are imposed include a State Fire Levy, an Environmental Levy, a Heritage Levy, a Tourism Levy and a Public Transport Levy, all of which are already in existence.”

Kev ponders the reason for so many levies and the newly introduced waste levy

Local Businesses support Shave for a Cure Beerwah RSL Club, Beerwah Hair and Beauty and Beerwah Commonwealth Bank where more than happy to support local lady Yvonne Morrison in her efforts to raise money for ‘Shave for a Cure’. Yvonne knows first hand how devastating this terrible disease is. Yvonne Morrison sitting with club member Yvonne decided she Andrew, Club President Denis Steer, Vicki would help make a from Beerwah Hair and Beauty, Brian Jarmyn difference by having and Club Bar Manager Tony Lyndon her head shaved at the Club on Saturday, March 12, and Vicki from Beerwah Hair and Beauty was there to help her out. Yvonne was supported by family, management and staff of the RSL Club and Commonwealth Bank. Not to let this lovely lady stand alone, Club member Brian Jarmyn had his hair and beard shaved. Club President Denis Steer added to the funds by having his head shaved and the Club’s Bar Manger Tony Lyndon had his locks shaved off after the crowd nominated him and threw in $150.00 extra so he couldn’t say no. Congratulations to Yvonne and all these people who helped by shaving for a cure or generously donating to this worthy cause. A big thank you to Vicki from Beerwah Hair and Beauty for donating her time. www.gcnews.com.au

Beerwah Lions Club Contributed by Una Robinson

Recently the Beerwah Lions Club hosted dedicated Lion and District Governor Beverly Bates who is the third female District Governor of Lions District Q3. She attended Beerwah Lions Club’s dinner meeting on March 9 where she spoke about the organisation and her personal story of having received hands on help from Lions many years ago. She inducted new Lion Paul Janus who was welcomed into the club together with his partner Karen. Paul was sponsored by Justin Neubecker. District Governor Michele Lecky was presented with a special award for non fundraising community work (BADYAC). Michele was nominated by the Lions Club Sharon, Jacinta and Jye for this special

On behalf of the Beerwah Lions Auxiliary, Ladies President Sharon Loveday presented a computer to young Jye who has Muscular Dystrophy. It is to help him with his exercises. Lions recently ran another successful sausage sizzle at Mooloolah and these funds will go to the Lions Clubs International Foundation to assist flood victims. Sunshine Coast Kennel Club, March Show Contributed by Helen Weil

Our next show is on Sunday, March 27, commencing at 8.30am for the Open Show and 9.00am for the Championship Show at Beerwah Sportsground. Yes, I did say we would be moving to Skippy Park but that is not to happen. We had looked forward to new beginnings at the new grounds but unfortunately there is limited parking available and we must stay at Beerwah Sportsground for a while longer. This coming show will have 14 rings operating simultaneously with an entry of about 700 dogs for the Championship Show and 300 for the Open Show. These entries cover up to 120 different breeds.

Many of these will be the regular favourites but there will also be many unusual and rare breeds shown as well. Judging is alphabetical by breed so Afghan Hounds will be on early while Welsh Corgis may not be in the ring until later in the day. We do encourage any and all to come along and enjoy our show. Exhibitors are more than willing to chat about their breeds and the showing is quite amazing and interesting to watch. There will be ‘doggy product’ stalls and other stalls of interest. Catering is provided and also a coffee van and ice-creams. Contact David on 5494 7496 or 0488 947 444 for more details.

Beerwah Writers Group Contributed by John Wright

At our recent meeting we discussed our potential involvement in a local competition to write 10 minute plays. This competition is organised by a regional drama group. Viki gained everyone’s attention with her story ‘Last Wishes’ an account of incidents at the moment of death. Our story reading session GCNews welcomes contributions from all local community groups and service clubs. Please note the editorial deadline is 12.00noon each Friday. If you have missed the deadline your article will not be considered for the next edition. For articles that do meet the deadline every effort will be made to include them in the next edition. However if we receive more contributions than we have space available your contribution may be held over until the following week. Priority is given to articles / notices that are time specific.

covered the presentation of 12 different stories about trees. The general theme that most writers chose was ‘you don’t have to be a conservationist to be a tree huger – and the reverse is also true’. The wordsmithing session included a lively discussion on ‘figures of speech’. We continue to provide opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback. The philosophy of GCNews is to ensure community groups and other regular contributors have equal opportunity in accessing the free community space made available each week. Please keep contributions to a maximum of 250 words, or 200 words and a photo. Submissions may be edited if too lengthy and in accordance with the GCNews style guide. To all my wonderful clients

I wish I could personally thank each and every one of you for your support and business over the years. But it is with a heavy heart that I advise you all that by the end of this month I will be closing the doors for good on Beerwah Travel. Due to the unstable times we live in and other personal situations we are no longer able to operate, leaving us with no choice but to close up shop! For those of you who have current bookings, firstly I will be in touch with you over the next couple of weeks to advise you that everything is still 100 per cent confirmed and there is nothing to worry about by the closure. Secondly, I will still be looking after your bookings as the agency I’m transferring my clients bookings to has kindly accepted me into the office on a three day a week roster. I will still be able to assist anyone in their travel needs from my new office at Cooroy Travel and if you have any questions or problems please don’t hesitate to call me there (generally Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) or even speak to my boss Sandy. So after five and a half years in Beerwah it is time to say goodbye and thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years and I hope to see you all sometime in the future! Mell Shepherd Owner / Manager Beerwah Travel

Rotary Thanks

On February 26, the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains conducted a Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. I would like to thank the people of Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough for their support. Once again these people opened their hearts and generously donated to this appeal. Three Rotary members collected $1,060.00 in three hours, 100 per cent of this will go to the people in need. This was a magnificent effort and on behalf of the Rotary Club I thank each and every one for your support and I just hope there will be no more disasters. George MacKenzie PHF, President The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains Inc.

A walk in the park

We would like to publicly thank the staff and volunteers at Mary Cairncross Park for their hospitality on a very rainy day in February. Very valuable information relative to the vegetation and creatures in this exquisite piece of rainforest 14 |

| MARCH 23 2011

was expressed very ably by our guide Rob, who is obviously committed to preserving this unique area. We agreed totally with him. The ladies involved in this exercise (The Rainforest Walk) with husbands, family and friends were inspired by the surrounding beauty and serenity. They will certainly make this known to others. The kiosk staff were most hospitable, serving a delicious light luncheon and providing a very amenable area. The brush turkeys were very friendly, providing a little amusement. Thank you to the very helpful female volunteer in reception at the Education Centre also. Activities such as this keeps vital environmental issues on the LNP agenda as some of this group belonged to this organisation to whom we are sure the message was well received. Thank you to all concerned. Mavis Robb Peachester

Community spirit going strong

I would just like to thank the people of Glass House Mountains region for their kind support in our fund raising effort for Murphy’s Creek State School. We have sent $400.00 over to the school this week with the well wishes of our community. Mark from Beerwah State High school won the raffle of two cricket bats signed by the Australian and English cricket teams and is very kindly going to donate the bats to Murphy’s Creek State School to use how they see fit, maybe a prize for the students or an ongoing raffle to help with some much needed funds. It is wonderful to live in such a warm spirited community. Patty Shaw Commonwealth Bank, Beerwah

Wake up Translink

I would like to add comment to our recent rail debate. On a recent trip to W.A I was amazed at the current fare pricing. As a senior I could travel the equivalent from Beerwah to Beenleigh for a total of $2.60 – or an all day ticket for $3.60 – That is 10 times cheaper to Translink – plus a service every seven minutes in peak hour or 15 minutes throughout the day. Wake up Premier and Translink; the masses will desert you. C. Batch Beerwah

Changing the world we live in

Our 18-year-old daughter Elly Westaway is currently in Los Angeles. We let her go with our blessing not knowing that she was going to be doing an internship where there is no pay, and that she is responsible for paying her own way over and home, plus accommodation and meals. She is away for three months to help out Falling Whistles, an organisation that helps others who are not as fortunate as us here in Australia. Elly recently sent us a message to ask as to spread the word on what the organisation is doing and this is what she had to say about Falling Whistles. “They hold a place in my heart and always will, but this isn’t just about the Congo this is about bringing peace to a place that hasn’t seen it to 20 years. “This is about showing the world that a group of young people can change the world and that our generation isn’t going to happily accept the world the way it has been given to us. “This is about peace; this is about basic human rights.”

I ask you to please take a look at the Falling Whistles web page www.fallingwhistles.com to see what it is they are doing. And to support and free the children from this awful life buy a Whistle, 100 per cent of profits goes towards rehabilitating children affected by war. You can get in contact with Elly and follow her journey at www.dabbleinlife.com Karen and Doug Westaway Glass House Mountains

Good result from rail boycott

Glasshouse locals should be feeling a bit chuffed with themselves as their efforts on the fares protest got an immediate response from the Minister for Transport. The Minister announced, during the day of the boycott and protest, that she will be holding a review of the Go Card fare system with particular attention on the discontinued six monthly and 12 monthly tickets. We haven’t won the battle yet, but for the first time the Minister is listening and responding. People there were great. Numbers on the platforms for the three main morning trains were clearly down at a number of stations and so many who did have to catch the train showed their yellow flyers. There was great footage on one news station of what they called ‘the silent protest’ - people who were unable to boycott but were prominently wearing their flyers in support. Also, a lot of people supported this at cost to themselves – people drove to Brisbane, paid for parking or used up holiday leave to stay home. The support from the media has been wonderful, as was the assistance from Andrew Powell, our local Member of Parliament. It is a bit disturbing, though, that as our local elected representative, Mr Powell was sent an official map from Qld Rail with large yellow lines showing where he could not go on the day, which clearly restricted him from setting foot on the railway stations. Here’s hoping for more good results from here on in. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

What is going on with the RSL?

Seems to me that all parties are lying, or just not telling the truth! Beerwah - Peachester RSL Sub- Branch say they had a deal in February to take over. We get a letter from Beerwah RSL Club in March saying they are getting evicted and don't know why and that the Sub-Branch won't talk to them. At the Thursday night ‘Information Meeting’ nobody knew anything. Nothing was mentioned about an agreement. The legal representative could only keep repeating that nothing could be done! If I had a legal representative like that I would be going elsewhere! Then, on the Friday following the meeting I went to the Glasshouse Bowls Club, and read a newsletter stating that plans for the Beerwah RSL Club to become a part of the Bowls Club had already been tendered to council, (and this was done before the Thursday night meeting). Are the Beerwah community being taken for a ride? Ron Batty Beerwah www.gcnews.com.au

We need a general meeting to sort this out

I find it most confusing and beyond belief that 10 members of a membership of 3,500 have been having discussions amongst themselves for over 12 months without letting their members know that there were problems within the organisations. As I see from afar there seems to be the Management committee who has six members from the Beerwah/Peachester Sub-branch and four members of the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club making up the committee to manage such a valuable organisation in our Community. These premises have been built by members of the community through sheer hard work. Giving their time voluntarily along with much of their own hard-earned cash, with the women of that time catering for weddings and holding fundraising events to build a beautiful meeting place for all the members of the Beerwah Peachester area. And to this date there appears that the doors are to close on April 9 to the members. The management committee consists of both parties, the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch and the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc., who have been very remiss in not keeping their valuable members informed as to what has been happening within these premises for such a long time. I find it outrageous that both parties have come to needing their own legal representation, without advising their membership. Both parties need to handover the organisation to its members and let them decide what direction they feel is best for the community. I feel strongly that their needs to be a general meeting of all members from The Beerwah Peachester Sub-branch and Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Inc. All need to attend so that good old respect, honesty and civil discussion can pave the way to put all this rubbish behind, so the members of this community can have their meeting place back again, especially the elderly members of our community. This meeting needs to be facilitated by a person or persons who have a sound knowledge of constitutions, so that all issues can be addressed, legally and professionally. Then the members will understand about grassroots organisations, along with how their club can operate within the constitution and relevant areas of business. By using this method it can’t be said there is favoritism from either party. Questions that need to be discussed and ratified at this meeting 1. What would the members like to see happen with these premises? 2. Would the members like to hear where they stand constitutionally?

Vox Pops McDonald’s is coming to Landsborough and opinion is definitely divided as to whether this is a positive or negative for the area. We asked locals what they thought of the fast food giant opening a store here. www.gcnews.com.au

3. Is there a need to look at current management practices? 4. Would the members like to have a ‘Caretaker committee’ for a time to get this business back on its feet, along with presenting a strategic plan for the future of this / these organisations? 5. Would the members approve of being a separate entity, with the view to leasing the premise as a Business Enterprise rather than the current status? I am sure there would be more questions that need to be answered, this is just a few ideas that I feel is a start for discussion. One wonders at the timing of this, as with ANZAC Day quickly approaching us, how can a business possibly be up and running within a couple of weeks, with all services currently operating professionally. Orientation of staff alone takes days to complete, for staff and management to become familiar with new systems to work within. First opinions of any business are lasting ones. Has this been really thought out by the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch committee? As time is of the essence I can only hope for the sake of our elderly members of this great community that commonsense will prevail. Name supplied Beerwah

Lest we forget

There’s been a spate of angry words exchanged of late – the local RSL is making waves within its membership; ardent history’s at stake it’s claimed, spurs and whips are drawn, chancred egos raked. It is no simple argument which lead to this impasse nor can a lasting truce ensue ‘til dawn parade. Citizens now face a legacy of trust, that monumental task embraced by those of us returned – keepers of a faith with memories that burn until the last who served returns to dust and rests at ease. The Search for the truth

In the ongoing saga between the Beerwah RSL Sub-branch and the Citizens Memorial Club I have been trying to establish where that elusive quality known as ‘truth’ resides. I have asked questions of both sides to try to clarify the position. A few days ago I was given documentary evidence relating to the eviction notice served by the Sub-branch on their tenant under the terms of the lease. On November, 28, 2010 the Sub-branch

Heather Carney, Landsborough “I think it’s a shame, I don’t think we need a McDonald’s particularly. I think we’ve got nice little eateries here, there’s quite a few different take-aways. It’ll just put more pressure on the local small businesses who I believe we should be showing our loyalty to.”

Peta Coleman and Chloe, Beerwah “I think it’s a great idea. There’ll be heaps of job opportunities for the young kids. And Aldi’s coming to Beerwah as well, so I like how businesses are coming. We need it for all the people coming and the tourists.”

held their normal monthly meeting which was attended by 40 members including RSL members of the Memorial Club Management Committee who were entitled to do so. Amongst other items of business a motion was moved and seconded that the Sub-branch terminate the lease of the Memorial Club. Naturally a lot of discussion ensued with all members present invited to speak if they wished. When the talking was finished the motion was put to the meeting. It was passed with 32 in favour, six against and two abstentions. What does this mean? In my view it means that the management committee of my club (the Memorial Club) knew from that date that they would be served at some time in the future with an eviction notice. Did they advise their members of this dramatic development? No. Yet two days after this meeting they held their own AGM where 80 members attended. A perfect opportunity to advise their members. They failed to do so. For the next three months they kept all this information to themselves and it wasn't until March 1, 2011 when the President wrote his letter that the members became aware of the seriousness of the situation - a situation that would now appear to be irreversible. In accepting election to office of the management committee of a club a person accepts that he/she has a fiduciary duty to the members of the club. That is a position of trust and a duty of care to the members to do nothing that would jeopardise the viability of the club. Clearly, by not advising their members of the gravity of the situation, they have breached that trust and their duty of care. Nothing, in my opinion, could be worse than such a breach of trust. As our pioneers developed our country, there grew a tradition of helping your neighbours in times of crisis. This tradition continued to evolve in our armed forces. It was called ‘mateship’. It was in evidence at Gallipoli, in the trenches in France, at Tobruk, in Changi and on the Burma Railway. It meant you never, never abandoned your mates, you never let them down. All 3,500 of our members, our mates, have been knowingly and wilfully abandoned by our management committee, treacherously let down by their actions. If they had the real interests of the club in them, they would understand what they have done and find the decency in their hearts to resign immediately from the management committee. In the club at 6.00pm we stand in silence while the notes of the Last Post are played and the poem read. At the end we all say ‘Lest we forget’. I will never forget, or forgive, what our management committee has done to our club. John Gresham, Booroobin

Vesna Holden, with Misha and Oscar, Landsborough “I don’t really want it here, due to the fact that we live not far from where they want to put it, so I don’t want my kids eating McDonalds all the time. Every time I have to go out of Landsborough I’ll have to pass it, and it’s going to be a nightmare. The fact they put it right across the road from the park I don’t find acceptable.”

Gary Young, Beerwah “I think it would be great for Maccas to come here. It will give us a bit more selection for take-away. The kids love Maccas so that will suit them.”

Peachester Primary school Vandalism

It was disheartening to visit our Peachester primary school the other day and hear about the level of vandalism occurring at the school in recent times. This school has a proud history in our region and as a community we need to provide as many eyes on the ground as possible and report anything suspicious to the Police. Sighting of anyone who may be in the grounds out of school hours needs reporting so we can catch whoever is responsible. The vandalism is sheer destruction of tax payers’ property and students, parents and teachers have every right to feel concerned and angry. We have a number of community facilities adjoining the school grounds so collectively if we can keep this area under scrutiny it may make a difference. Beerwah Police can be contacted on 5436 5222. Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.

- this project commences on site this week and is targeting a completion date of April 21.

Have your say about rates notices

Sunshine Coast Council’s customer service team is currently reviewing the way rates notices are distributed, options to pay and what prompts residents to contact council with rates queries. Rate payers are invited to have their say as part of the review via an online survey – located on council’s website – open until Friday, April 29. The aim of the rates notice review is to hear directly from rate payers’ ways to improve the current system. With around 150,000 rates notices issued every six months, council is committed to improving the rates notice distribution and related customer service assistance and resolution process. To have your say about rates or for further information, visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Manage your Money

Sunshine Coast Libraries are hosting free sessions aimed at helping members of our community move through the various phases of their lives with financial independence. The Manage your Money sessions conducted by Centrelink’s Financial Information Service Officer, Greg Barrie will demonstrate how a few simple habits can put you in charge of your financial position. The sessions will cover a range of topics from reducing debt to budgeting and planning for the future to superannuation, asset protection and financial counselling services. These Manage your Money sessions will provide a series of simple guidelines to help put you back in the driving seat to control your everyday finances. The 75 minute sessions are free and with places filling fast, bookings are essential. More information is available at the Sunshine Coast Libraries website. A session will be held at the Beerwah Library on Wednesday, April 13 at 2.00pm, to book phone 5439 2500, or at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday, May 4 from 10.00am to book phone 5435 3100.

New pathway at Eudlo

They may not be paved with it, but for pedestrians and cyclists who can now get around safely, the new pathways recently completed across the Coast are as good as gold. Council will add around 2,000 km of pathways to its network this financial year. In Division 5 this has seen a new gravel footpath on Neil Road at Eudlo.

Curves in Beerwah Area Glasshouse Country women can help fight heart disease while they work out, thanks to a local fundraising campaign announced by Curves. Running until April 2, Curves of Beerwah will waive its usual service fee, in exchange for a donation to the Heart Foundation. Funds raised will go towards helping to raise awareness of the risks of heart disease in Australian women, said Curves of Beerwah owner Linda. Far from being a men’s-only health condition, heart disease is the number one cause of death in Australian women. The disease kills four times as many women as breast cancer, with around 11,000 lives lost each year in Australia. Despite these alarming statistics, many Australian women are still dangerously unaware of the heart disease risk they face. Linda said, "We would like to encourage as many Beerwah-area women as possible to visit Curves during this period. Our aim is to raise funds to fight heart disease. Importantly, at a local level, we are keen to demonstrate how good exercise and healthy eating can greatly reduce the risks of heart disease amongst Beerwah-area women.” Contact Linda of Curves of Beerwah on 5494 0455.

Living Well Stargazer April 2011 with Chirone Witsen

High energy New Moon in Aries This is a highly energised New Moon this month, falling in Aries in the early hours of Monday, April 4 (effectively just after midnight on Sunday night). There are six planets in Aries at this New Moon, including Uranus the great awakener which made its entry into Aries last month, just as the earthquake and tsunami struck in Japan. The New Moon in Aries represents the opportunity for a bold new start, time to awaken your passion and take action! Neptune goes into its home sign of Pisces on the day of the New Moon, bringing a deep longing for spiritual connection and oneness. Neptune will be at the beginning of Pisces until August 5, giving us a foretaste of the energy we can expect for the next 14 years. Pluto slows to a halt on Saturday, April 9, ready to begin his retrograde journey. If anything in your life has been going through symbolic death throes in the last six months, this is a time when you are likely to revisit the whole process,

perhaps at an even deeper level as you search for the hidden truths and the soul essence of who you are. Pluto is retrograde until September 17. The Full Moon in Libra on Monday, April 18 highlights our need to relate to others, yet also emphasizes the need to find a balance between the needs of the self and the needs of the other, between the need for independence and the need for compromise. Mercury is retrograde for the first three weeks of this month, so take care with paperwork and all forms of communication as mistakes and misunderstandings can easily arise in this period. Use the time wisely to go through old papers, tidy up correspondence, complete projects and other unfinished business. Mercury is retrograde until Saturday, April 23 – Easter Saturday. Happy Easter! Recent images of a schoolboy snapping and body-slamming a boy who had been bullying him has brought the issue of bullying back into the spotlight, if it had ever gone out. We are informed that we are in the middle of an epidemic of bullying in our schools. I wonder though whether the problem is any worse now than before, or is the way we deal with bullying different. I must admit I never had any trouble with bullies at school. My father advised me when I was about 10 that bullies are cowards and that the best way to deal with them was to show them that you weren’t scared of them. “Bullies always look for a ‘soft’ target”, he told me. And he was right. Recently a well-known child psychologist has come out and said fighting back is not the way to solve bullying, that we need to deal with bullies by talking to them and reasoning with them. That’s all well and good, but sometimes there are people who can’t be reasoned with, including children, who often don’t have the maturity to be reasoned with effectively. And if

Call for Volunteers

The Landsborough Museum is in urgent need of volunteers of all ages who have some spare time to help with the day to day running of the museum such as cleaning, filing, researching, data entry, meeting and greeting etc. No special skills required. their behaviour is getting them a reward, feeling better about themselves or feeling power over someone else, then they are unlikely to want to change their behaviour. At the other end of the spectrum, many people have cheered for the overweight boy who bodyslammed his younger, smaller taunter to the ground. I’m not sure if that’s the most effective way of dealing with the problem either. And girls bully girls more through verbal means than physical. And this can be just as damaging, if not more. One of the problems today is that we are not giving our children the tools to deal with conflict and bullying in an effective way. In no way am I advocating a ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality in our school playgrounds, but we need to empower children to stand up for themselves. When they leave school they will find that mum, dad, their class teacher and the school principal won’t be there to defend them.

HOW TO SAVE A DEPOSIT FOR YOUR FIRST HOME Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison, provides her tips on how to save a deposit for your first home. The best ways to save for a deposit fast will vary widely depending on your specific circumstances. A key for many people is personal budgeting. To save for a deposit quickly, many people find the most effective thing is to work out a personal or household budget, which includes nominating a set amount for savings each week or fortnight.

www.gcnews.com.au

The secret to budgeting is to be honest with yourself. Do not set unrealistic limits or else you will blow your budget every week. If you blow your budget, don’t lose heart. Take a deep breath, set a new budget, and start again. Other creative ways to save for a deposit will depend on your individual circumstances but you might consider the following. • Stop paying rent and move in with parents or family for a year. • Open a savings account where you cannot access

the funds using ATMs or EFTPOS. This can help reduce impulse spending of your hard earned savings. • Set up an automatic transfer on your pay day into your savings account so you do not even see your savings and are therefore not tempted to spend them. If you are a dual-income household and are lucky enough to be able to do it, use one wage for living expenses, and the other for your savings. Little things can also make a big difference. If you buy your lunch every day, try

taking it from home or if you enjoy eating out at restaurants once a week, try cutting it back to once a fortnight. The difference to your savings over a year can be much more than you may think. Get help from the start. Teresa Harrison’s professional help will make the process easier. She can discuss a range of strategies and tell you exactly how much deposit you need to get into your first home.

Rare single level unit - 1 of 2 only units on 1,495m2 zoned multi unit res. The unusually large land area and zoning raises the possibility of further development (subject to council approval). How much for my home? Ursula Starkovsky - ABOUT REAL ESTATE has her finger on the pulse and provides regular updates on the property market. What is a reasonable and achievable price for your home? Looking at some statistics, over 50 years property prices rose on average 10 per cent per year; outside metropolitan areas a little less, around eight per cent per years. Using Ursula Starkovsky the rule of 72 (72 divided by eight 5494 6244 or 0415 978 344 equals nine) prices double every nine 48 Simpson Street, Beerwah years. In other words, if you bought www.aboutrealestate.com.au in 1991 for $80,000, theoretically in 2000 that property costs $160,000 and in 2009 $320,000. 30

MARCH 23 2011

Currently we see a lot of properties bought say in 2000 and now on the market for $450,000. Some renovations and additions have to be taken into account but, those properties are over priced and difficult to sell. There are only three types of prices: • The emotional price; my home is my castle and when I sell I need to buy a caravan, a new house, a holiday etc; add up all items and there you have it, a SELLING PRICE. Don’t laugh; this is the majority of vendors! • The market price is the comparison of your home to what has sold in the

neighbourhood, and what is currently on the market and for how long. • The third and most important one is the price a buyer is willing and able to pay. So how do you do it? Leave all emotions out, they only interfere. Look at it like a business transaction. How much did you pay, what are the improvements (deduct depreciation of value over time), how long did you hold that property. Follow the rule of 72, i.e. the value doubles every nine years. South Wales, and last but not least our lady of the land West Australian Melia, who is looking for a husband, have sent hearts fluttering. The Farmer Wants a Wife is a heart-compelling, feel-good story of love and romance. This is not a competition. There is no prize money and the only winner in the end is love. We simply follow the story of Aussie farmers as they explore new relationships and try to find their soul mates. Now is not the time for farmers to be shy. Working farmers who are sincere in their quest for love and a lifelong partner should write to us at farmer@fremantlemedia.com. au or go to ninemsn.com.au/farmer

After three weddings, two engagements and three babies – ‘The Farmer Wants a Wife’ is again on the search for single farmers. The Nine Network’s hugely successful reality program, The Farmer Wants a Wife, is returning for its seventh season and is currently looking for a new batch of eligible male and female farmers. So far the show has notched up three weddings, two engagements and three farmer babies. In 2007 Farmer Chris met the woman of his dreams, Kim, and a year later they were married. In 2009 Chris and Kim celebrated the birth of baby Charlotte.

Scentless Rosewood

Synoum glandulosum Scentless Rosewood is a bushy small tree which grows to around 10m in most garden situations. It naturally occurs from the south coast of NSW up to Hinchinbrook Island in North QLD. Producing fragrant white / pink flowers, the shiny wine red fruit are loved by many species of local birds including the Green Catbird, Regent Bowerbird and King Parrot.

Scentless Rosewood requires a well drained soil and can handle full sun to semi shade. It makes a lovely feature tree or a great addition to a mixed rainforest planting.

If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Email: gogreenrainforest@bigpond.com Now open 7 days.

Beerwah Bulldogs Report Contributed by Dean Roberts

Senior Rugby League began at Beerwah on Saturday with the Bulldogs taking on the Caboolture Snakes in Trials in 3 Grades, U18, Reserve and A Grade. In all three games the standard of footy was quite good considering the very wet conditions and the players first hit out for the season. For the record, the Under 18’s were successful and the Reserve and A Grade went down to teams that are going to be in running at the pointy end of the season. It was great to see all the support the club got on Saturday in the conditions and those that went along could see what a good effort it was by the boys. We are looking forward to continuing that on for the whole season.

Our season begins in earnest against Maroochydore at Beerwah on Saturday, April 2 and we would love to see all the doggie supporters come along and give the boys support. Each weekend we will be featuring a team and providing a report on their game and this week it is the Under 10 Beerwah Team who are sponsored by Matilda Glasshouse. Coach Steve de Lyster has submitted the following report on Saturday’s Game. The weekend saw our boys play a pretty good game of football against a well drilled Bribie side with the wet conditions making it hard for both sides with a lot of dropped balls. Due to a great defensive effort from our boys and two good trys to Caleab and Mason, our team were very competitive with the Warrigals. Beerwah under 10’s are shaping up for a great year, with standout performances from Remi, Locky, and Jake. The team is coming together really well and with a great bunch players and awesome support from the parents. Anyone wanting to become involved in the club either in the way of playing, volunteering or sponsorship are encouraged to contact President Dean Roberts on 0418 816 605 to discuss.

What a prize!

A blonde goes into a coffee shop and notices there’s a ‘peel and win’ sticker on her coffee cup. So she peels it off and starts screaming, “I’ve won a motorhome! I’ve won a motorhome!” The waitress says, “that’s impossible. The biggest prize is a free lunch.” But the blonde keeps on screaming, “I’ve won a motorhome! I’ve won a motorhome!” Finally, the manager comes over and says,

“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but you’re mistaken. You couldn’t have possibly won a motorhome because we didn’t have that as a prize.” The blonde says, “no, it’s not a mistake. I’ve won a motorhome!” And she hands the ticket to the manager and he reads…“W I N A B A G E L.” Des Holmsquest, Landsborough
