Disclaimer
Hi Everyone
L
ast Saturday night, Landsborough local Pauline Tau asked us to call in at her 50th birthday party that was being held at Club Glasshouse. We don’t generally get invited to birthday parties for work – but when Pauline explained her plan we were keen to support her efforts. Having her head shaved to raise funds for cancer research was one of the items that Pauline had on her bucket list, so with her 50th birthday coming up – she came up with a great idea. She knew if she had a party her friends would all want to come along and bring her a gift, so instead of a gift she asked them to make a donation.

And as part of the night, the guests would also be offered the opportunity to witness her ‘going under the clippers’ and some even the opportunity to participate in cutting off her long locks. Leading up to the event she also organised a ‘huge’ raffle with heaps of prizes – which were drawn on the night. The one thing that Pauline hadn’t explained to me was that she would be asking everyone to wear some of their lovely 80s fashion wear to the party. So when we first arrived at the party I was definitely surprised by some of the outfits people were wearing. So readers can share in the night – we have included some of the photos in our ‘Out and About’ section on page 18.

The Beerwah High School athletics excellence program has again produced a rising star athlete, with Mana Taripo winning a medal at the recent Australian Athletics Junior Championships. The 17-year-old Year 12 student from Beerwah took on the best young sprinters in Australia at the Perth championships in March, and flashed home to take out third place in the under-18’s 110m hurdles. Although his finals time of 14.99 seconds – was slower than his heat (14.71 seconds), it was enough to secure him the bronze medal and a position on the champions’ podium. This was the third year Mana has qualified and competed in the Australian Junior Championships, but it is the first time he has medalled. Mana has been competing since Year 8 at Beerwah High School and through the local Glasshouse Galaxy club, before moving onto competing with the Maroochy Athletics club based at the Sunshine Coast University. He has been crowned Age Athletics Champion every year so far at school – except Year 10 where he was slightly hampered by a broken ankle. He has also won the District Age Champion three times.

He hopes to go to University next year, where he’ll keep competing at senior levels. Mana is a bit of an all-rounder and hopes to be able to improve his capacity to contest the gruelling decathlon event. Mana says the international athlete he admires most is Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, and his most inspiring Australian athlete is former Olympian hurdler Kyle Vander Kuyp. Let’s hope Mana can continue to chase his dream and attain the international results of his role models Asafa and Kyle.

First university graduate for GCCC A new milestone was reached for Glasshouse Country Christian College as one of the alumni students became GCCC’s first ever graduate to receive a university degree. Karina Johnson from Beerwah, finished GCCC in 2009 as part of the first Year 12 cohort and completed her Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) at the Sunshine Coast University in November last year. The official graduation ceremony was held on Friday, April 5 and accompanied by much grandeur and formality. Graduates were allowed to invite four friends or family members to witness the special occasion and afterwards gather for a light lunch in the university’s piazza. When asked what her favourite part of the day was, Karina responded, “going from graduand to graduate after such a long wait, celebrating with friends and family and finally getting to wear the funny hat!” Although Karina has finished her degree, she still has three more years of study ahead to follow her chosen career path. Karina was accepted into Honours at USC this year and then has two years of Masters to follow. Many other GCCC alumni from the first Year 12 cohort are undertaking university courses, however, most are double degrees taking four years rather than three which means they will graduate next year. Smile for the camera By Lea Parkes
The staff at the Red Cross at Nambour recently asked Glass House Mountains local Peter Farrell to smile for the camera, which was pretty impressive considering they were removing plasma from him at the time. The photograph was part of acknowledging Peter’s 150th donation to the Red Cross over quite a few years. Peter explained that during his working life, he was a regular blood donor which you can do a maximum of four times a year and takes between 10 and 15 minutes. Since retiring from work he has now become a plasma donor, which you can do as often as every fortnight and requires between one and a half and two hours for the task to be completed. Plasma is a very diverse blood component which can be used for a wide range of purposes including patients who have clotting problems often after trauma or liver transplantations. About 20 years ago, Peter also donated bone marrow which he admitted was quite painful but he was happy to be able to help someone else that needed it. If you have always thought about becoming a donor but haven’t got around to it, you should check out the website http://www.donateblood.com. au Good job Peter!

Is there a crime wave? By Lea Parkes
but making sure that deterrents are in place. Things like having your property securely stored under the house or in sheds; ensuring that houses are locked; and windows are not left open – actions that provide additional opportunities for the unplanned theft.
Recently we received a letter from a Beerwah local who had property stolen from her home. She felt that Beerwah was becoming a terrible place to live, in terms of the crime rate. She and her family moved to the area for the quiet country town atmosphere and she is now concerned that we are losing that feel. She worries she will need to resort to having security cameras on her property like some city residents. I thought I’d put this question to our local police officer-in-charge, Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck who took on his Beerwah role in December 2010. He oversees the 20 or so officers at both Beerwah and Landsborough stations. Senior Sergeant Duck’s response to our reader’s concern was to say that in actual fact, more recently, unlawful property entries in the area has been trending down, while on occasion they do have spikes in particular activities. From interviewing perpetrators about their actions, he said generally when property is stolen from homes in our area that the crime tends to be opportunistic. The situation is often that property might catch someone’s eye and they assess how easy it would be to remove and they act on it. While our local area has still retained its relaxed country feel, as the townships grow and as societies’ values change, individual property owners need to ensure that they consider ‘situational awareness’. This isn’t about turning our homes into fortresses,
One specific issue I did put to Sergeant Duck that I had been made aware of by a number of local business people recently, is that of vandalism. In particular over the Easter weekend, numerous businesses in Beerwah had their front window smashed in.
Queensland Police to stop crime and make Queensland safer. “We are fortunate to have a great team of dedicated officers, who all bring plenty of both policing and life experience to the job,” said Senior Sergeant Duck. “There is a lot of negativity that police officers have to deal with in their day-to-day work, and there is a minor element of the community that are not pleased to see us, but by and large the majority of the community support the police in their endeavours and the officers work hard to achieve positive results. “We are committed to building good relationships within our community and one way of doing that is for us to communicate regularly with the community.” “In future we will be providing a monthly report in the Glasshouse Country News which will give locals a better picture of what is happening in our area,” said Senior Sergeant Duck.
He acknowledged that vandalism is definitely an ongoing concern in a number of townships. The police have identified the vandals who had undertaken the damage in the recent activity in Beerwah and action is being taken. The challenge the police have with vandalism is that much of it is carried out by juveniles who, because of our legal system, are difficult to prosecute and regular offenders know their rights. However, clearly the police are working hard on building positive relationships with young locals. In the past 12 months they have established an ‘Adopt a cop’ program at all of the local primary and high schools in the area. They have also helped establish a quarterly Blue Light Disco at the Beerwah Community Centre, which with three events held to date, are growing in support by local youngsters. The mission for our police service is to have members of the community working with the

Recurring headaches are not normal! While headaches are terribly common, they are NOT normal. The normal condition of the human body is vibrant and healthy...not tired and painful! Pain is our body’s alarm system that something is wrong. So – if you often say “It feels like my head is in a vice”, or “I’ve had migraines since puberty” or “My neck and shoulders are always tight and tense” and you just want to go and lie down - then pay close attention now. Four major causes of headaches are dehydration, stress, food intolerance, and neck subluxations. And each of these causes has a path to relief. The most little known is neck subluxation. Can this help your headaches? Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. Upper neck subluxations very commonly cause ‘Cervicogenic Headaches’. This type of headache presents with neck stiffness and pain at the base of your skull, which can sometime radiate through to your eyes. Drugs can reduce the symptoms (turn off the body’s alarm) for a while, but they do not correct the cause – and the symptoms return. Many studies have shown the benefits of treating the neck subluxations of headache sufferers, including the Boline and Duke Studies. If you are having headaches something is wrong. Chiropractic is a safe and effective form of healthcare that treats a major cause of headaches, the Subluxation. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if your headaches are a good fit for our very successful Headache Relief Program. Last chance debutantes
Did you miss the chance to make your debutante when you were young? Well you are not alone and the Caloundra Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star (Masonic Order) is holding their Last Chance Debutante Ball on Saturday, April 27 at the Beerburrum School Arts Hall to rectify the situation. There will be seven lovely ladies making their debut, all aged over 65 years, they will be presented to the Worthy Grand Matron of Queensland – Sister Marcia Fletcher. The opportunity has also caught the attention of those outside the area with debutantes travelling from Cooroy, Redcliffe, and Brisbane Valley for the night. Jan Holdsworth of Beerwah who is one of the debs, said it started out as a fun idea to help raise funds and awareness about their group. However, as the time draws closer, Jan is starting to get excited and one very determined 88-year-old debutante who recently broke her leg is not going to let that stop her from attending, she will be presented in her wheelchair. As the ladies always wear white to their regular Masonic events, these debutantes will be wearing coloured frocks and the men will be wearing their white summer dress jackets. One of the other highlights of the night will be the old time dancing which will be led by Trevor Chalk who is well known to Caloundra dancers. The doors will open at 6.45pm, the debutantes will be presented from 7.30pm and there will be dancing to follow and a light supper. The Order of the Eastern Star are extending an invitation to any locals who would like to come along on the night and enjoy the fun, tickets are $20.00 a head and can be purchased by phoning Jan Holdsworth on 5439 0584.
Walls that tell a story By Lea Parkes
Work is well underway to complete the mural artwork around the entire Beerwah & District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) and it has really transformed the large colourbond building. Funding recently secured for Sunshine Coast Council has been put to good use employing mural and street artist David Houghton, a former Beerwah local, to paint the exterior of the building. Centre Co-ordinator Cathy Condon said their goal was to turn the BADYACC building into a vibrant work of art for the youth of Beerwah – embracing the culture, values and dreams of youth in the community.
Wimberleys Home Hardware
“This project engages youth to contribute and claim ownership of a safe and supportive environment where their needs can be met,” she said. David worked with the young people getting them to take up the spray cans and compressor operated spray guns. He said he was impressed by both the interest and the quality of work of those who participated. “A significant amount of the artwork has now been completed and the response from the community has been really positive,” Cathy said. Each side of the building represents different aspects of the local environment and together brings together a combination of mural style work as well as some edgier street art style painting in the front entrance opposite the skate park.

Recognising International Women’s Day At our March luncheon meeting our Guest Speaker was Chris Minetti who is the Village Manager of Embracia at Beerwah. Chris spoke enthusiastically of her achievements in her career path. From 1994 to 2004 she was a Local Councillor with the Caboolture Shire Council and had many interesting and funny stories of her experiences in her role. One story was that when she went door knocking to campaign for the elections, her brother, being a police officer bought her a mobile phone for her safety whilst she was out meeting people. Chris thought he was being over protective of his sister. She also advised our members that to be aware of security in your home and the neighbourhood. In her position with Embracia, Chris discussed the need for single women in their later years to be well informed about their living arrangements. Choosing a retirement village type of living where security and maintenance staff are available when needed was a high priority. We found Chris an interesting and at times a humourous speaker with her stories of her life. Anyone interested in joining our View Club can phone Margaret on 5435 2172 who will be pleased to supply further information about the club. For those who don’t know about the View Club, we are a ladies club and we have a luncheon once a month at the Glasshouse Sports Club and a monthly outing. Friends of Cahill’s Scrub Contributed by Ted Prickett The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub is a small group of Peachester residents who decided to become involved in the restoration of the 35 ha reserve which is located between McDonalds Road and Harold Place. It is one of the few remaining scraps of lowland subtropical gallery rainforest. It is also one of the few remaining habitats of the Giant barred Frog, Tusked Frog and Cascade Tree Frog, all of which are threatened species. About 120 bird species have been observed in the reserve, in addition to echidnas, many reptiles, and platypus in London Creek. If you’re interested in joining our group in this endeavor you are invited to join us for our inaugural meeting to be held on Saturday, April 27 at 9.00am, commencing with a meeting at 101 Harold Place followed by morning tea after which there will be a tour of several sites in the reserve which are being considered for the initial projects to be undertaken. RSVP—Ted or Eunice— 5494 9061 by Wednesday, April 24.

Lions News
Contributed by Bob Banner
April has started out as a busy month for the Beerwah Lions Club, with over 300 kilograms of empty aluminum drink cans purchased from the public and sent off for processing into reusable aluminum. Collection day is the first Saturday morning of each month. Look for the Lions sign near Mill Park in Simpson Street. Guest speakers at the April dinner meeting were Mary Page and Cliff Wilson from Glasshouse Gourmet Snails. Far from being the garden pest, or food for Frenchmen that they’re generally regarded as, Mary went on to explain that snails may one day play a very important role in human well being. Snails have the ability to almost stop ageing when they hibernate, a fact that’s attracted the attention of at least one molecular biologist at the University of the Sunshine Coast. If the genes and neurohormones that trigger snail
hibernation in hot climates could be pinpointed, it could theoretically lead to ways of slowing down human ageing, or at least lead to extending the shelf life of transplant organs and help with age related diseases like cancer and alzheimer’s. Since being set up a few years ago, Glasshouse Gourmet Snails have established a firm niche market with leading restaurants in the region. So are snails really a garden pest? “No, said Mary emphatically. Snails don’t often eat their way in from the outside of plants, making them unlikely suspects for garden damage.” “If your vegetables are being eaten, look for another culprit,” added Cliff. The Lions will in the near future take advantage of Cliff and Mary’s hospitality, by organising a tour of the farm, with several Lions expressing an interest in a snail tasting.
Quilt raises funds for firies The Mooloolah Valley Quilting and Craft Group announced that the winner of the quilt raffle for the benefit of the Eudlo Rural Fire Brigade was Ms Belinda Crowley of Eudlo. The winning ticket was drawn by the president of the group at their last meeting on April 3. The quilt and its matching bag,
which was sewn by the women of the Mooloolah Valley Quilting and Craft Group, was donated to the fire brigade to help finance the purchase of equipment and to help defray the costs of the planned expansion of the brigade's building in Eudlo. The sale of tickets for the quilt raised over $500.00 for the brigade. The Eudlo Rural Fire Brigade would like to thank all those who purchases tickets and helped to make this fundraising effort a success. The Mooloolah Valley Quilt and Craft Group meet every Wednesday at the Mooloolah Community Hall. All are welcome to come to sew and chat.

Monthly Finance Money Guide
Business Feature
Government about to take your lost Super
Locally Owned... Locally Staffed...
By Ross Wolstencroft from Arrow Financial Planning Services
During December 2012 the Government passed legislation that enables it to take the money held in old superannuation accounts. Yes, this could mean YOUR money! And you only have until May to reclaim funds in any of your untouched super accounts. While the government calls this money ‘Lost Super’, often it can simply be forgotten, or perhaps maintained separately for a good reason. What is the new definition of Lost Super? Previously the Australian Tax Office (ATO) could receive lost super accounts with balances of less than $200 but this has now been increased to $2,000 (and rising to $3,000 in two years time). That is, any superannuation account that is untouched and has up to $2,000 has to be passed over to the ATO. An untouched account is defined as an account that has not had a contribution or rollover made to it in the last 12 months. And, if your superannuation fund does not have the correct address and has had mail returned, the account is classified as being ‘uncontactable’. If the account has less than $2,000 in it, it too will be sent to the ATO. But it gets worse! Many ‘untouched’ accounts are knowingly maintained by members as they have life insurance cover attached to the account. Many people’s health situations change over the years, and it is often prudent to retain older super accounts with life insurance cover attached,
rather than try to obtain new cover, potentially with premium loadings, or exclusions, applied due to less than perfect health. So, even if the account is kept for insurance purposes, under the government’s new rules, this cover will be lost! The ATO estimates that there are about 1.1 million accounts with a balance of less than $2,000. What will happen to super funds that are not claimed? If your super funds are moved to the ATO, you will be able to claim them back. However, even with interest paid on the funds at the rate of CPI, it is doubtful that this will even be close to the overall growth of an average super fund balance over time. So expect that the value of these funds will not grow as hoped, to assist in your overall retirement income goals. It is likely that it will be a lengthy process to recover your funds from the ATO, so it will be far easier to act now. In many instances you will be able to transfer funds to your main fund, or arrange to make a small contribution to maintain the insurance cover. We are always available to help too, this may be a good reason to consider your overall superannuation and life insurance requirements by discussing your needs with us, and obtaining appropriate, more holistic advice that better suits your personal goals.

Doing Business When your passion is your business Karen King has been teaching art from her home based studio in Landsborough for over 20 years and holds eight classes per week, along with monthly workshops. Teaching is her focus and coming from a Corporate Training background gives her the excellent skills required to teach anybody how to create, even if they have never painted before. Karen will take them step-by-step through each process guiding them with one-on-one supervision along the way. Earlier this year, Karen launched her web site www.landsboroughartstudio.com and has had great results from it. Student’s work is posted to the web site to encourage their creativity and achievements; there is lots of information as well with a ‘Tips and Techniques’ page with lots of useful information. Whilst Karen has always stocked high quality art supplies for her students, she will now be offering these art supplies to the general public. “Quality art supplies are not available in the near vicinity and artists have to travel to either Maleny or the coast to obtain their supplies. “With time and fuel being premium commodities these days, I believe I will be filling a small niche which is currently lacking,” she said. “While I do not have a shop front with standard opening hours, I am open most days of the week
and can be contacted for a special appointment time. “I am already offering a large range of general painting supplies and currently stock a very large range of paints, mediums, canvases and brushes and have plans on extending the range and I am always willing to order in supplies that I don’t have currently in stock,” said Karen. Karen can be contacted for classes or opening times on 5494 8354 or you can e-mail her at karenking.1@bigpond.com.
Rejuvenate your skin Rejuvon8 is a very fitting name for Landsborough’s newest beauty lounge, run by skin specialist Karen Mullins who aims to work with her individual clients to give them the skin that they want, by using Cosmeceutical and a natural range of products. At Rejuvon8 they use Intraceuticals as their Cosmeceutical range. This range is popular with many of the celebrities in glossy magazines, it has also made a huge impact on real women looking to have the best skin they can. Intraceuticals’ products have been developed to hydrate, brighten, smooth and clear the skin by way of delivery of hyperbaric oxygen. The beauty lounge’s natural skin care range is Arbonne which is a Swiss formulated natural range. Through this range Karen and her therapists are able to give clients the right advice for their individual requirements. Karen said she uses Arbonne for her swift, luxe and depth facials and clients are impressed with the results. These days many clients are comforted in knowing that the products are pure, safe and made from botanical elements. Open every day (except Tuesday) by appointment – so to get the skin you want give Karen a call on 0487 880 208 or 5494 8180.

Still some kind people around
I am a 43-year-old Glass House Mountains local and I have a terminal brain disease called Lewy Body Disease which causes Parkinson and Dementia symptoms. For me every day can be a challenge, full of struggles, not just physically but financially. I’m on a disability pension and my wife is on a carer’s pension, which doesn’t leave any wiggle room and we have to watch every dollar. It is frustrating when you have to deal with things like people parking in a disabled car park without a permit, being pushed and shoved in the shops because I’m not as fast as most, or even trying to explain things to people that don’t understand me and having them get frustrated. Every night on the news there is story after story of people being hurt in numerous ways. It makes me sad to see how much people only ever consider themselves. It makes you wonder what ever happened to manners or treating people the way you want to be treated? This concept seems to go further away every day. Recently my faith in being kind to one another has been restored and I wanted to share a good news story with you all. It was suggested to me that I contact a lady by the name of Tracy who provides Bowen Therapy treatment locally. I didn’t know anything about it, however I thought I would try it, anything that may help my symptoms is worth a try. I went to her see her and she said she would treat me at no cost just because she wanted to help. She didn’t ask for anything but just gave of herself. I was surprised someone would help just because she could. I’ve been for four treatments now and find this type of massage and series of movements helps relieve the pain I have in my body daily. She provides a safe, peaceful and loving environment along with the treatment which not only helps my symptoms but has put back that little spark that was missing in me. Thank you Tracy you know who you are, you have helped me in so many ways and you have restored my faith that there are still some kind and caring people out there. Steve Coleman Glass House Mountains
Re: Steve Irwin Way
In regard to the comments in the Page 3 story of GCNews, April 10. Why venture into the intersection if you cannot clearly see the oncoming traffic? Inattention, impatience and incompetence appear to be the cause of most accidents; not the road surface; not the lack of visibility; not the lack of traffic lights. From my observations as a professional driver, there are many, many motorists who should not be behind the steering wheel - their driving standards are woeful. Kevin Pullen Landsborough
I really hope that something will be done about making our roads safer for all our drivers. To say that an accident is simply caused by driver error infuriates me. Perhaps that had something to do with the accident in question but one can surely surmise that had there been a traffic light at that intersection those dear people would still be alive today. Jean Currin Glass House Mountains In response to your questions on page 3, Yes, there are several intersections along Steve Irwin Way that need traffic lights or roundabouts, especially the one at the Matilda. Someone needs to start a petition so that we can lobby for upgrades. I think you will find there will be a massive number of people, in the thousands, who would put their name to such a petition. Lewis Kwarcianyi Glass House Mountains The recent fatal crash outside the Matilda service station happened during daylight on a straight stretch of road with clear visibility both ways. I use this intersection often and have never considered it particularly dangerous, but because it is a high speed intersection, you have to be careful. However, the intersection of Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way, the main entrance into Glass House Mountains Township is very, very dangerous. When turning right into Steve Irwin Way the view to the left is most often blocked by left turning vehicles, particularly at busy periods, and this is also a high speed intersection. This intersection is a serious accident waiting to happen. Councillor Rick Baberowski promised in his election campaign to push for improvements to this intersection, it would be interesting to know what progress he has made. In my 50 years of driving, this intersection concerns me more than any other I have encountered anywhere.
After hearing the sad news of yet another accident / fatality at this intersection, I think it is more than time that something was done about this intersection. About seven years ago, my son and I were T-boned at this intersection. We were travelling south on Steve Irwin Way, came toward the intersection, a couple of cars on the inside of us turning left into Bowen Road and the next thing I know I have a car coming out Bowen Road and I have nowhere to turn, but straight into the car coming out. Thank God I was only travelling less than 80k's, not the 100k it was then, and my son and I (except for whiplash for myself) and the man driving the other car were ok. My car was totalled. I could understand that the other driver didn't have a clear enough view of traffic because of the cars turning into Bowen Road, so to me it is a clear case that this intersection needs a HUGE overhaul. So until this issue is addressed, I urge everyone using these roads to slow down until this intersection is improved. Marilyn Podmore Beerwah I totally agree 'Enough is Enough' I am a resident in this area and use that intersection at least Stuart Eden twice a day. It has become increasingly busy over the last few years and I often feel unsafe at that Glass House Mountains crossing. The winning image from ‘Photo Walk in the Park’ was taken by Lyn Donald using a Panasonic F27 Digital Camera. The Expo, hosted by Beerwah Grafx and supported by Beerwah Library and U3A, provided an opportunity for this talented group to share their expertise in a variety of ways, from taking photos to using image editing software to organise, edit and even turn photos into imaginative artistic works. At the same time, the Library staff ran workshops on iPads and androids in the Library. This Expo was a ‘first’ and promises to be even
bigger and better next time round. Book a free, one on one session with a tutor for basic to intermediate computer lessons through the Library from 2.00pm – 3.00pm on Thursdays. .

Private Jack Ferris As ANZAC Day approaches, it is timely to reflect on the World War II Army service of Jack Ferris, late of Bankfoot House. By the time of Jack’s enlistment at the Brisbane City Hall Recruiting Depot on 26 June 1941, Australia had joined Great Britain in the declaration of war against Germany (1939) and against Italy (1940). He entered at the rank of Private and was employed in the Australian Army Ordnance Corps, which was concerned with the supply of military weapons of all kinds, together with ammunition and other equipment. By the time he enlisted, Jack was already 40-years-old, so it’s not surprising he didn’t serve overseas. Jack’s son, Bill, recalled that his father worked in the Army’s workshops in Ernest Street, South Brisbane, repairing military vehicles. He was later transferred to the Royal Australian Air Force base in Charters Towers – the site chosen by the RAAF because Australian planes could go out on bombing raids from Charters Towers, but the base was not within the range of Japanese bombers. Bill said Jack was demobbed out of the Army to the ‘Manpower’ scheme at the end of 1943 and was employed in wheat production at Meandarra with the Gleeson family.
Mary and Jack Ferris 1941 Such employment was highly valued as it contributed to the war effort on the home front. Several objects in the Bankfoot House collection relate to Jack’s war years. There’s a knuckleduster, a piece of metal fitted across the knuckles and used as a weapon, which Jack acquired during the war. His two World War II medals are an important part of the collection and a small torch which is believed he used during his army service.

New market for Beerwah
Landsborough Child Care and Early Education Centre Government Approved Que ensl Kindergarten Curriculum and Is your child is eligible for Prep in 2014? If so they can attend a Kindergarten program now.
Market Co-ordinator Julie Robinson with Patricia and Archie Fleming and Julie’s little helpers Olivia, Amelia and Ryan Beerwah Sports Ground will become home to ‘The Coastal Village Markets’ a new monthly arts, craft and local produce market to be held on the last Sunday of the month from 8.00am - 1.00pm starting on April 28. Julie Robinson from Elimbah, like many people in the community, likes to be able to support the Cancer Council of Queensland. She’s decided to embrace their campaign of ‘I Can for Cancer’ this month, which encourages individuals any time during the year to simply add a fundraising element to their favourite activities. Julie has been in business for many years and throughout this time has hosted events to raise funds in aid of cancer. She has lost two members of her family in recent years to blood cancer, one being her father. Raising funds for a cause close to her heart has inspired her to make a difference, so the Coastal Village Market was born. Julie, along with Patricia and Archie Fleming, have been working on the idea for some time and hope the community will embrace the market by supporting a great cause, Cancer Council Queensland. It will be run as a not-for-profit market. After paying for all operational costs, hoping to keep them to a minimum, with donations / business sponsorship etc and the remainder will go to the Cancer Council Queensland. Market Co-ordinator Julie said in the past few weeks they’ve had a great level of interest from the local community and stall holders who sell a diverse range of products including gourmet foods, lovely craft work, kids clothing and jewellery. “I am sure locals are really going to enjoy being able to come along and purchase items that are not available for sale anywhere else locally,” Julie said. Each month the market will have a different theme with the first one being 'I can for Cancer’ and then the May one will be the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’. “As we are a not-for-profit market, we would also welcome any donations of goods (no matter what the value) to be raffled, and on occasions we will also need volunteers to assist on the market days. “We have decided to make the market affordable to everyone by offering stall spaces for $20.00 per 3m x 3m.” For stallholder enquiries, please call 0438 421 473 and any other enquiries, please call Patricia on 0409 244 366. You can also email coastalvillagemarkets@yahoo.com.au for any enquiries. You can keep up-to-date with what they are doing by liking them on Facebook.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Father Kevin Smith Caloundra Catholic Parish Happy Easter. It may seem strange reading those words three weeks after the Easter holidays but most Christian churches continue to celebrate this wonderful feast for several days after the event. In the Catholic tradition we celebrate the Easter Season which extends for six weeks, long after all the chocolate has been devoured, until the feast of Pentecost. Easter captures the imagination and demands our attention but in a very different way than does Christmas. Christmas is about a birth and we all love a baby. Easter is about a death and not only death, but the extraordinary claim that the one who died rose from the dead. So these are not just religious matters that Easter calls us to remember. Easter is about very human matters. It is about that fate that awaits each and every one of us. Death and its darkness, its mystery and the very chill that just thinking about it brings to most of us. It is not a religious thing to die - it is a very human event. But God wants us to

be free of anything that enslaves us or creates fear in us. God has always been like that. God leads people from slavery to freedom, from darkness to light and from despair to hope. That’s what God always does. Death is the last great frontier for that journey to take place. So God took that battle on as well. In Jesus, his Son, the battle was fought and won. Death is faced, the darkness and emptiness of the tomb is felt but from that same tomb new life emerges, like birth from a mother’s womb or sunrise over the sea’s horizon. So there is no darkness on this earth that has not been overcome with light, hope and love. May you know something of that love in your life. God bless, Fr Kevin

Out and about I’ll be in Landsborough to catch up with locals on Friday, April 26 from 9.00am to 11.00am. Drop in at Morris House/old CWA building, 478 Old Landsborough Road, or make a meeting time by calling Kerri on 5420 8987.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 The Mooloolah breakfast meeting scheduled for April is not going ahead due to the Anzac Day public holiday. From now on we’ll be meeting on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30am at Thunderbird Café. Unfortunately the 3rd Thursday of the month clashed with other statutory meetings that I’m obliged to attend. That means the next meeting will be on Thursday, May 2 and I hope the same faces can still be there and some new ones too. The vision to make the Sunshine Coast Australia’s most sustainable region is already being achieved due to the work of local champions who are doing what they can to live sustainably. Council’s Glossies Awards recognise sustainability excellence in a range of areas including building design and construction, eco efficiency in business operations, greening the arts, innovation in services and products, and edible gardening. If you’re involved in sustainable activities then don’t be shy – nominate for this year’s Glossies, check council’s website for the details. Council is on the look-out for pests, so don’t be surprised if officers stop by soon to investigate pests lurking around your property. It’s all part of the annual Pest Survey Program and the main aim is to monitor the distribution and spread of declared pest plants and animals. I’m from a farming family and from a personal perspective understand that government and landholders need to work together in order to fight this massive problem head-on. The aim is to control declared pests in the region that are causing environmental damage, loss of biodiversity, threat to stock and domestic animals, loss of agricultural productivity and loss of community amenity. More information can be found online at council’s website. It’s hard to believe but about 10 semi-trailer loads of unwanted electrical waste was diverted from landfill after council ran a series of successful free e-waste recycling for television and computers. A total of 119 tonnes of e-waste was collected across the whole region and the units are pulled apart and the various components of glass, plastic, wire and metal are sent for recycling. Council is planning another series of free e-waste recycling days to coincide with the switchover of analogue to digital TVs on May 28. www.gcnews.com.au

Plans for the new $15 million extension of Beerwah Market Place was approved by council at the recent Ordinary Meeting. This development will deliver a major upgrade to the look and functioning of the town effectively changing the face of the Peachester-Kilcoy Road and the Simpson Street intersection. IGA will be upgraded and a Target Country is proposed as a major new tenant. Up to 100 people will be employed as the Market Place is constructed and becomes the anchor shopping space for locals and visitors. It’ll be wonderful to see this critical but degraded corner site come to life and I believe the intent is to start the development straight away. It’s the stimulus the town needs and will overlap well with the start of council’s Place + streetscape upgrade. It’s a breakthrough year ahead for Beerwah with two major upgrade projects occurring side by side that present many opportunities for local jobs, increased tourism and economic growth. Council has been working on a modest but significant upgrade along Landsborough-Maleny Road on the corner of Mary Street. We’ve had our landscape architect draw up designs for plantings on the roadside opposite Peace Park in order to tidy up and improve the ‘green’ entry into Landsborough. Improved management of the local stormwater issues has also been incorporated into the upgrade project funded by divisional allocations. It’s been pleasing to finally see all the garden beds along Cribb Street planted out by council with reasonably mature plants and council has also introduced recycling bins into the mix while replacing old and damaged ones.

Mulch can save you dollars
With all the recent rains and flooding, your gardens and driveways may need a little care and attention to keep them in great shape. Washed out driveways can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your vehicle, and can also potentially lead to accidents and serious injuries. Phil from Savage Landscape and Nursery Supplies stresses the importance of acting early to repair washed out driveways before the next downpour. “It is really important to get onto this as quickly as possible, as each heavy downpour will only make the damage worse, and more expensive to fix,” he said. Similarly, your gardens and lawns also suffer from the excess rains. “Garden mulch, which may have been washed away or has broken down, needs to be topped up. And you might like to look at top dressing your lawn to replenish soil and nutrients that the rains have washed out.” Savage’s have been your local landscape suppliers for over 25 years, and have the best quality materials for you to choose from. Not only that, they also have a great range of landscaping equipment for hire – which now includes a bobcat. They also offer the service of a Handyman to help you with all those jobs that you just can’t seem to get around to yourself. So for some friendly and experienced advice, call the team at Savage Landscape and Nursery Supplies on 5494 1153, or drop in and speak with them at 20 Tytherleigh Avenue, Landsborough (open Monday to Saturday).
Time to get outside
Business owner Alan Atkinson says now is the time to Get Outside! “Autumn is a perfect time to get on top of all the jobs in the garden – cooler temperatures mean the plant growth has slowed and it’s much more pleasant to be outside trimming and tidying,” he says. The wet, warm weather of the previous months has meant gardens have been going into overdrive (or overgrowth!), and Beerwah Small Engines have everything you need to tackle the jungle. “We have some great specials on Stilh blowers and hedgetrimmers, both of which are great products for the Autumn season,” Alan says. And of course, they also stock a huge range of good quality outdoor power equipment, including STIHL, Cox, Greenfield and Hustler. Alan and the team enjoy seeing regular customers returning back for servicing and sales, and are always on hand to give help and advice. With a ready supply of spare parts, a pick-up and delivery service, and qualified, friendly staff, Beerwah Small Engines has all you need for the garden. They are open 8.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, and 8.00 – 12.00noon Saturday. Call in and see the team at 7 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah, or give them a call on 5494 6644.

Jobs for the yard • If your sweet pea seedlings are looking a little worse for wear due to all the rain, it’s not too late to replace them with new ones – try the dwarfing varieties. • Grass growth will be starting to slow down now, but weeds still grow. Keep on top of weeds, especially bindi-eye, clover and tropical chickweed. • Bare rooted roses will be in stores now but don’t rush in and buy, as the optimum time is the end of June. • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering can be cut back now, leaving the new growth for next seasons flowering display. • Apply a light dusting of lime to bare veggie beds. Don’t apply fertiliser at the same time as the lime reacts with the nitrogen creating ammonia gas. • Plant leafy coriander plants now. The cooler temperatures will stop them bolting to seed. • Plant dormant fruit trees from now until August. Vegetables Plant beetroot, silver beet, broad beans, onions, spring onions, peas, carrot, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, turnip, capsicum, celery, beans, garlic, leeks, parsnip, peas, potatoes, sweet potato, tomato, broccoli, parsley, cabbage, cauliflower and coriander. Flowers Plant alyssum, marigold, petunia, calendula, cineraria, cornflower, dianthus, hollyhock, kale, lobelia, pansy, phlox, iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, statice, stock, sweet pea (seedling), viola, carnation, cyclamen, foxglove, gaillardia, salvia, sunflower and verbena.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Dennis Hume
Wrap up of the 2013 Super Challenge Once again Super Challenge is over for another year. The men and women of Division 6 did themselves proud. The five teams of men in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours, finished on top of their Division. They played off in three matches of the Round Robin, winning the first two and going down to Hervey Bay by three rinks to two in the third round. Well done men! The Ladies also finished on top of their Division, winning every round played. This ensured them a place in the semi-finals held at Tweed Heads BC. This is the third time that the Ladies have got through to the semi-finals – no mean feat! Glasshouse Ladies played against Kawana first up. Unfortunately Kawana came away as the victors. Kawana then played Wellington Point in their next game. Kawana lost to Wellington Point, who were the final overall winners. Congratulations once again for a spirited effort from the Glasshouse bowlers. A big thank you to our Team Managers, Bill Tumbridge and Liz Little. Sunday, April 7 - Round 3 of the Men’s Fours Championship played in the morning. Col Allen, Jim Tatum, Bill Tumbridge and Terry Little def Mark Ellul, Ron Rix, Jack Timm and Kevin Beasley. In the afternoon, the Final of the Men’s Fours Championship was played. Rob Scullion, Ron Wilson, Kerry Capern and Ross Siegle def Col Allen, Jim Tatum, Bill Tumbridge and Terry Little. Thus Ross, Kerry, Ron and Rob are the 2013 Men’s Fours Champions. Congratulations to you all. Wednesday, April 10 - Ladies Jackpot Wednesday. Six rinks of Triples played. Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hunt def Dossie Buckley, Maurie Dawes and Joseph Albrecht. Graham Young, Marleen Bertram and Trevor Bertram def Ernie Sherwood, Joy Reason and

Week beginning 17/04/13
with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com ARIES March 21 – April 20 Mercury is now going to come into your sign this week, making you an enlivened, impulsive speaker. Old viewpoints give way to fresh perspectives. Innovative concepts come at you at lightning speed. Grab one or two before they disappear. You are an unbeatable winner. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Mars now moves into your steady sign. Mars can be somewhat obstinate and overbearing when it meets up with Jupiter. It’s best then to pace yourself cautiously or reorganise if you are facing disapproval and isolation. Soon a Scorpio full Moon eclipse arrives to re-evaluate partners. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The fire and air signs in the heavens, several planets are helping friends to become the catalyst that gets you moving. Any occasion that brings you together with other people should be zestful. Some Gemini’s may find a fascinating chemistry between you and another person, and so will help to further a career. CANCER June 22 – July 23 The talkative planet Mercury comes to you this week as a persuasive ally, helping you to get back on the front stage of your public life. With Venus entering Taurus, followed by the Sun and Mars, you resonate to communal affairs. Mercury with Uranus brings up revolutionary ideas.
LEO July 23 – August 22 Things slow down to a snail’s pace as Venus, the Sun and Mars enter ‘easy going’, or should we say, ‘lazy old’, Taurus. Words you have been holding back will punch out strongly as your impulsive opinions surface. Don’t stick stubbornly to old ideas that have no facts. Avoid force. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There is some nice easy going energy about sharing funds or investments. A partner may try to take control as you suddenly find out there is a restriction about shared funds, but tolerance, forgiveness and compassion becomes the guiding qualities. Mars in Taurus boost travel plans. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Try as hard as you will, accumulating money is on your mind for the next three weeks. However as much as others would like you to save it, spending it is on your mind now. If you can manage it, stay out of the cross fire of intense situations as Uranus and Pluto bring interruptions. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mercury moving through the Aries sign, conjoining with Uranus also in that sign, sparks a stubborn standoff. Passions are chilled and you might find you are giving your sizzling power to others in setting up strong relationships. Information arises again about your health matters.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Under the positive planetary aspects in the heavens above, all you want to hear is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. An explosion of bright ideas brings you blasts of ingenuity and originality. If you are spreading the word of truth, present it in a calm way. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Revealing your heartfelt desires to loved ones now will come naturally. This is the best week to boost you out of hesitancy and ready for hugs and kisses. You should receive a rapid fire response and a desire for an easier life. With the Sun in Taurus it’s time to have affection and joy. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Your normal quick thinking shifts into ‘Star Wars Enterprise Hyper- Speed’. An easy going Taurean might lure you into another planet enjoying life at a slower place, simple pleasures and sensual delights. This is the time that you are asked to ‘smell the roses’ and other plants. PISCES February 20 – March 20 If there has been monetary disruptions, the planets entering into the money sign of Taurus, bring your thinking even more into practical substance and worth. Not the best week to make hasty, unstable fiscal decisions. The trick is not to be with pushy friends who upset you. possibilities!
