JUNE 15 2016

Hi Everyone

M

any of you will know that at the GC&M News office for the past two years we have yarn bombed our big tree out the front at Christmas. So being a bit partial to yarn bombing we couldn’t go past participating in last weekend’s Maleny Knitfest. Knowing we had quite a lot of preused knitted pieces made for us by the talented Lottie Nesbitt we decided to take on one of the biggest items that was available to cover. Yes we chose the big rust covered timber logging machine (yep it isn’t a cannon) outside the library, which not surprisingly took forever. But thanks to my creative sister Raz, and GC&M team member Tina (for getting her mum to make the awesome wheel coverings) and for chipping in with the construction, our entry could definitely not be ignored! And over the 10 or so hours we spent working on it, we must have spoken to hundreds of very encouraging locals – who were either very polite or who admired our determination and quirky style, as it certainly didn’t have the beautiful polish of the Knitfest crew, or the CWA ladies. But we know that we managed to bring lots of smiles to the faces of both the very young and those that were Regards, watching them – which definitely made it all worthwhile.

Local News Knitfest a wonderful success! By Sonia Clark

The streets of Maleny were awash with colour and creativity as the town’s first ever Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival drew visitors from near and far to experience Knitfest. The inaugural three-day festival which ran from Friday, June 10 through to Sunday, June 12, featured workshops, craft markets, guest speakers and live entertainment and by all accounts, it was a wonderful success. With strong support from the local community and businesses, the winter arts and craft festival was a fantastic showcase for the both the Hinterland town, which vibrantly displayed its artistic hub, as well as the impressive talents and incredible creativity of all those involved. There were many highlights over the three jam packed days of activities. The extensive ‘yarn bombing’ of the town was definitely a visual feast, with local community groups, individuals and businesses wrapping and draping the trees, buildings and structures in colourful knitted and crocheted creations that were beautifully quirky and eye catching to say the least. Even the local Police station was ‘yarn bombed’ and it was great to see the local businesses and community groups get into the spirit of the festival.

There were numerous well attended craft workshops on offer and attendees were able to discover, learn or extend existing skills - from introductions to dry felting where you could make your own felt toadstool, to learning how to make miniature character dolls and the basics of ‘granny square’ and Tunisian crochet. The interactive and inspiring weekend has now set the stage for the festival becoming a regular calendar event. The celebrations appealed to both young and old and it was a great opportunity to learn more about and celebrate the crafty arts, such as knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving. Since the recent outrage over major milk companies looking to screw dairy farmers even more, there has been a literal tsunami of community support for independent milk operators such as Maleny Dairies. Here is how Ross and Sally describe it … It has been nine days since the last major business update to you from Maleny Dairies. What a nine days it has been. We promised increased traceability around our operations as you continued to buy our yoghurt, custard and milk. This is the beginning of the fourth week in spiked sales. First week sales jumped 10%. Second week jumped 13% on top of the 10%. Last week sales were a staggering 34% bigger again. In other words, sales are about 66% bigger! Here at Maleny Dairies we have said from the start that it doesn't matter if these sales are a one-off or permanent. We thank you as do our farmers. As a direct result of your efforts to buy our products we can inform you that we are talking to two new farming families. One family will return to dairy farming in the Mary Valley, a property previously closed and sold. They are going to start tentatively on July 1. They are very excited and so are we. We are taking a bit of a risk that

these sales are going to stay, but we believe ... we always have! The second farm is a definite maybe because the worse thing we can do to a farming family is to take them on and then drop them later because we got the numbers wrong – a false dawn. So we have started talking and we will wait and see. We are slow to take on new farms because we now guarantee two things: 1. Once with us we won't drop them over our companies net profit; and 2. We guarantee their base price for milk and that once set that price never goes backwards. These two guarantees give farming families certainty. We know that our prices are setting the benchmark and we would like you to know that we are committed to making them higher. Our current farmers are very excited about the milk being sold. Should these wonderful sales continue we believe we can put ourselves in a position to also pay our current farmers more. But right now we are concentrating on getting the timing right to bring on more farming families to match these sales. You are all making a massive difference. If sales stay at this level we estimate we need three more farms. This is just unheard of in our industry. Dairy farming is unbelievably hard, it really is. We can pass on to you one more important thing on this post. Our farmers are ending their day with a bit of a tired smile on their face. We think that's pretty special. We think you, our customers who have made this happen, are pretty special too.

Poor excuse for rail crossing closures consultation Contributed by Jim Straker

I am a resident of Reesville who frequently uses the Landsborough crossing. About the Information Session: Attendees were politely met and formed into groups to be met by a project representative who was to lead them through the display. The representatives did not appear to know much about the local aspects for this project. It was a session for Beerwah to Landsborough and certainly not to Nambour. There was no information about the extent of this project around Landsborough – extended passing loop, engine turnaround facility, the displays contained no possibilities – zilch – on a bare map of Landsborough. At least the maps for Glass House had some concepts. Most people attending the session would have no idea about overpasses etc for a rail crossing, so how could they be expected to provide any comment? No definitions or information was supplied for the terms ‘business case’ or ‘reference design’ and thus it was not reasonable that any suitable comment could be made towards the aims to have these mystery documents. The flyer stated that there were new considerations which had not previously been identified – elimination of the level crossing and expansion of the Park ‘n’ Ride. This was patently wrong because there was a consultant report for the Park ‘n’ Ride prepared in 2012 and the elimination of the crossing was part of a study over 10 years ago. No discussion or justification was provided as to

why the crossing had to be eliminated. Recently, I was in Brisbane where there are many level crossings which operate satisfactorily. Retention of the main crossing but possibly closing the Gympie Road North crossing may be reasonable, but apparently was not part of the agenda. Put bluntly I consider it an insult to the local people and a complete waste of their time attending the session as it was provided. No information was provided by DTMR or Building Queensland. Elimination of the Landsborough crossing: From the outset, it is important for local businesses that the town centre is not isolated as happened in Beerwah. This crossing is part of a through route to the Hinterland – Maleny, Montville, Mapleton and beyond. Any solution for this part of the proposed duplication must consider the traffic to those areas too. No information or justification has been provided about the reason to ‘eliminate’ the crossing. Many crossings exist in Brisbane on major traffic routes. It is understandable that there may be an advantage to close minor crossings but not one of this significance. Elimination of a crossing and the provision of an overpass is a very expensive project. The only positive thing for the evening was the plans produced by Dave Ritson to demonstrate what might be involved in the elimination process. Attendees were appreciative and able to have some understanding about these aspects of the project.

About the expansion of the parking area: There was no information about the extent of the area available for an extension of the parking area. There was no information about limitations imposed for engine manoeuvre areas. No demand information was provided to demonstrate how many additional parking spaces might be required, nor any information about demands for bus areas etc. How could any reasonable comment be provided about this topic? It is recommended that:

A properly prepared set of possibilities be developed. Backing information be made available for attendees. Building Queensland and DTMR provide a realistic ‘Information Session’ at a new date. Both groups should be ashamed of the poor standard offered at this lot of sessions. Locals can still make comments on the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project. Go to www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects, then go to the ‘B’ section and look for ‘Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project’.

A new service is helping patients navigate their way through complex health care needs and medical appointments. The Maleny community is now benefitting from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s (SCHHS) nurse navigators, who focus on a patient’s health care journey and their health needs. Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Graham Wilkinson said the Nurse Navigator service would provide end-to-end care coordination for patients with the greatest health care needs. “For individuals with multiple complex health issues, having someone available to come to their house, guide them through the health care system and be a key point of contact, will be a huge relief,” Mr Wilkinson said. “The nurse navigators will be working very closely with the patient’s General Practitioner and other health providers to ensure patients are supported, assisted to access the most appropriate service, and receiving the best possible care, when and where needed,” he said. Maleny nurse navigator Kaye Crawford, a nurse for 26 years, said the exciting development of the nurse navigator service was that it focused on the patient’s entire health care journey and all their health needs, rather than just on a specific disease or condition. “I am based in beautiful Maleny where I work with individual GP’s, as the main providers of patient centred care, assisting in the coordination of specialist appointments and providing a seamless transition for the patient between different service providers. It is very rewarding to be able to play an active role in helping make someone’s life better,” Ms Crawford said. For more information on the nurse navigator service, please contact the Nambour Community Health Centre on 5450 4750 or visit www.health.qld. gov.au/nmoq/optimisingnursing/nurse-navigators

Farmers want a designer For the past 111 years the South East Queensland District Exhibit (SEQEDE) has been a competitor in the Royal Easter Agricultural Show in Sydney. However their future involvement is up in the air and they need a ‘Designer’ to join their team to showcase the large range of agricultural produce from our region. They are looking for the services of someone with a flair for display and design using texture and colour. Col Dabelstein SEQEDE Organiser said it would be catastrophic should they need to close after 111 years due to lack of interest. This is because these displays and their competitiveness are world renowned and iconic to Australia. “We cannot let our participation go without a fight, as that will be a sad day for our growers, our reputation, and our State,” he said. Should you be able to help in anyway, either as a volunteer member to put together our products, or help in promoting our cause, or as design help, please contact one of the group with a name, names, group, idea, or more contacts etc. A job description for the designer would require someone to be able to offer a design and the plan to construct such a design on an area approximately 200sqm. The design must meet certain criteria including originality of concept, contribution to agriculture / society, colour and lighting, artistic merit, innovation, creativity and skill of display construction. The display is a static design but there is scope to add movement as well as the use of materials, graphics and symbols. This project would require the designer to be able to come to Sydney for 10 days prior to the Easter Show opening the public to supervise and direct the construction and work program to finish the display before judging on the Thursday morning of the opening of the show. Saver6 offers an end to unemployment Business feature

Community News

Maleny recipient of Queen’s Birthday Honours By Sonia Clark

The collaboration of Saver6.com and Transportable Shade Sheds has provided resellers like Warwick Rose with a much needed opportunity to get back into the workforce. With an outlook of limited income and the pressure of money running out due to challenging circumstances, Warwick has embraced the opportunity to be his own boss who can work to his own schedule. By becoming a small business owner selling Transportable Shade Sheds, Warwick is now reenergised with new incentives to pursue both his personal and financial goals. In 2008, Warwick was involved in a serious car accident which meant that he was unable to continue working in his previous role in the automotive industry. With a large family to support and difficulty finding work – especially after sustaining injuries in the car accident, Warwick was finding that despite his best efforts he was unable to find employment. Looking for new business opportunities in an environment that would suit his own pace, Warwick came across the opportunity to become a Transportable Shade Sheds reseller. Having previously owned a franchise business before and finding that he paid more to the franchise than to himself - Warwick was keen to try a different business model, he realised that by becoming a reseller with Transportable Shade Sheds, backed by the business support and mentorship of Saver6.com, that he could get back into the workforce, be his own boss and best of all, pay no franchising fees ever. After careful research and discussing his aspirations with Global Business Manager Tyler MacLaren, Warwick became a reseller in February this year. “I looked carefully into the business, did a lot of online research and just kept coming across really positive reviews,” said Warwick. “When I decided to become a reseller the entire process has been completely hassle free and easy. Everything flowed and the support from both the team at Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com has been terrific. The team at Transportable Shade Sheds have been brilliant and the marketing side from Saver6.com has been perfect.” Apart from the security of reselling a well known quality Australian manufactured product, the collaboration of Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com allows resellers such as Warwick a hassle free way of becoming a business owner, secure in the knowledge they will be backed up at every stage of the business - from the initial purchasing of the trailer through to training and product support. One of the biggest advantages for resellers is the ongoing online mentorship and support from Saver6.com that offers practical online support along with the opportunity for small business owners to ‘think big” and be inspired to seek their full potential both in a business sense and personally. “Becoming a reseller has made me feel 100% better and generally more inspired. It has provided me with a great focus to achieve things again and I know that I will succeed in this business,” enthused Warwick. Warwick is based on the Central NSW Coast and services a wide area from Sydney and Newcastle to the Central Coast. His business is called Express Sheds and if you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed in that area contact him via social media or on 0477 235 459. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Please call Warwick Rose, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you with your Transportable Shade Shed purchase, from your initial enquiry, right through to installing it on your property. Give him a call today!

JUNE 15 2016

On Monday, June 13, the Queen’s Birthday 2016 Honours List was released which included recipients in the General Division of the Order of Australia. This honours list is the pre-eminent means of recognising Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Local Maleny man, Brian Day has been duly recognised with an OAM award for his outstanding service to the community through his longstanding role as a social welfare advocate – notably in the areas of Gay Welfare. Brian, who is now in his mid seventies, grew up in Ipswich in a family that had strong community and social welfare beliefs and is a Queenslander through and through. At the age of 24 he moved from his home down to Sydney which proved to be pivotal time in his life. Living in Kings Cross in the 1960’s, Brian was able to be accepted as a gay man during a time in Australia that in many areas was not as diverse as it is now. In the early 1970’s, Brian returned to Queensland and recommenced his university education at the University of Queensland (UQ). He became a founding member of CAMP (Campaign Against Moral Persecution) and became increasingly involved in gay activism. While at UQ, Brian founded the first LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex) social club in Brisbane under the moniker of ‘Camp Club’ as well as ‘Campus Camp’. Fortunately for the time, the ‘Campus Camp’ was actively supported by the University Vice Chancellor which allowed them to become a recognised student union group and gave them a platform to pursue their activist and advocacy work. In 1975, Brian was one of three students along with a senior academic, who was invited to participate in the Royal Commission of Human Relationships which contributed to societal law reform and change. This was an important turning point in Brian’s life as it gave issues around LGBTI reform a viable voice that was supported during a time of evolving tolerance and acceptance. This inspired Brian to continue with his gay advocacy work. In 1979, Brian met eminent Swiss-American psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross who was a pioneer in near death studies. She took Brian under her wing and he underwent training and study in welfare and palliative care. When HIV/AIDS arrived a few years later, Brian had no hesitation in joining the Queensland AIDS council, becoming a spokesperson for the group. He met his long-term partner Ian in 1982 and their partnership allowed Brian to freelance his palliative care and social work skills to support friends living with HIV in both Sydney and Brisbane. In 1988 he and Ian moved to Maleny and he started the AIDS council support group on the Sunshine Coast. Over the last few years’ Brian has been actively involved in establishing IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia) in Maleny as well as Aging in Diversity Action Group. At the end of this month Brain has been invited to present a symposium at the Global Conference on Aging in Brisbane where he and other members will present ‘LGBTI aging in Australia - then and now’. Brian has no idea who nominated him for the award but he is proud to represent gays in an area that doesn’t normally get represented. “Maybe this is an indication that this area is becoming more accepted by the mainstream and I hope that this might be an inspiration to younger gay people,” said Brian. In a humorous aside Brian added “I also have to point out that I find it amusing that an old queen like me will be receiving an award on the Queen’s Birthday!” Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia. If you know someone worthy, nominate them now at www.gg.gov.au www.gcnews.com.au

Local face of the globe

Nicole Theunissen, a local girl from Elimbah and a student at Glasshouse Christian College is a finalist in the National Junior Face of the Globe competition to be held in August on the Gold Coast. Nicole has made it her goal to raise much-needed funds for Cancer Council Australia in her role as finalist. This cause is close to Nicole's heart, as her Grandfather was diagnosed with breast cancer (rare in men) nine months ago. She says it is heartbreaking to see someone you love being destroyed by this horrible disease. According to statistics one person in Australia gets diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes. Nicole feels that we all can play a role in the fight against cancer by donating, even if it is just $1.00. The beautiful owners of Elimbah General Store, Neil and Wendy, are supporting Nicole in her fundraising, as well as Puma Service Station on Steve Irwin Way. If you have a dollar to spare, please help Nicole by visiting Puma or Elimbah General Store and add your donation to her Cancer Council tin.

Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) is a not-for-profit charity group that has been finding ‘forever homes’ for the Coast’s four legged friends since 1979. The society has around 120 volunteers and operates on a non-euthanasia policy while actively promoting responsible pet ownership. Every year around 1000 animals are saved and the charity relies heavily on the generosity of the community, as well as seeking government grants to continue operating. The refuge’s biggest fundraiser for the year is its annual garage sale – which will be held on Sunday, August 14. Contributions are now being sought for new and retro items. This year, SCARS will also be expanding the ‘new item’ section for the garage sale. If you have any donations of unwanted gifts, new purchases or unwanted shop stock, please deliver to SCARS from now until early August. Donations of retro items from the 1970’s and earlier are also called, for as well as donations of new items ($100.00+) and vouchers for the Silent Auction. For more information or if you have large deliveries please contact Rosy on 0438 544 082. Bohemian Chic always in style Bohemian chic may be back in style but for Heidi and Anne at Eclectic Dreams the essence of free spiritedness and fabulous unconventionality has always been an essential part of what draws customers through the door. This month celebrates the 14th year of Eclectic Dreams at Landsborough and owners Heidi and Anne are understandably thrilled to celebrate this marvellous milestone. Given the current retail landscape, especially for boutique operators, to successfully run for 14 years indicates that the business has evolved and adapted and that its ideals of a cooperative business model work. Heidi’s passion for design originally started in the 1990’s when she ran a market stall in Darwin selling hand dyed baby clothes she’d created herself. When the family moved to Queensland in 2002, Heidi continued to sell her unique products at high-end markets until a meeting with Anne

Pickering in 2001 encouraged Heidi to establish her own shop. Anne joined the business in 2003 offering Reiki and massage and the two ladies have enjoyed a collaborative retail journey that promotes their individual passions – massage, healing and crystals for Anne and clothing and colourful design for Heidi. Eclectic Dreams offers a range of holistically inspired products, gifts and unique clothing with personality. With her designer’s eye and local contacts, Heidi can offer customers both off the rack and bespoke statement pieces that appeal to all ages and sizes. “I want customers to feel like they are a total goddess who can feel at ease in their own skin or chase anything they desire! I love hearing people try on an outfit in the change room and saying “oh wow!” or find a gift that is received so well they come back to tell us about it.. Eclectic Dreams is truely a diverse mixture,” explained Heidi.

To mark the birthday celebrations they have given the shop a new look with everything from hand made faerie creations by Anne to a retrospective clothing range by Heidi that will appeal to the boho goddess’ in everyone. Eclectic Dreams, is located at Shop 4 and 5, 1 Maleny Street Landsborough, contact them on 5494 1244.

Community Mural for Domestic and Family Peace Maleny town and district is appreciating and celebrating the 'Art for Family Peace' Mural currently set up at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. People from all walks of life, ages and abilities are engaging with the project in a diversity of ways, either having a go at painting symbols, images or meaningful words, simply sitting on the straw bales watching, or involving themselves in the varied and topical conversations that naturally arise when there is a focus on community collaboration, peaceful relationships and healing the gender and social issues of our time. The projects visionary, Rob Clark added that creativity leads to conversation, leads to connection, leads to community. “So this 'Art for Family Peace' is much more than painting a stunning mural. It's very much about conversation and connection between people as we create something very beautiful together,” he said. “Over 130 canvases join together to form one masterpiece, a powerful metaphor for community and family. The mural continues at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre each Thursday to Sunday all through

June with a big fun, finale on Thursday, June 30 to distribute and celebrate the sale of all the canvasses and thank everyone for participating and supporting the project. Phone Rob on 0414 315 399 to buy canvasses, donate to the project, or find out more. Everyone is welcome to come and be involved and musicians are invited to create an ambient atmosphere while people paint or to help celebrate on June 30.

‘A Mug From The Bush’ audio book launched

Peachester History Committee is pleased to report that their long-planned project to produce an audio-book from Nev Anning’s autobiography ‘A Mug from the Bush’ has become a reality. Former ABC presenter and current announcer with 4OUR community radio, Keith Birks of Caboolture, undertook the task of reading the text and compiling the audio version, with some added sound effects and music to enhance the narrative. The finished product was formally launched by Cr Rick Baberowski at the PHC meeting on Sunday, June 5. Members and visitors also enjoyed a photographic tribute in memory of the late Nev Anning, who was one of the founding members of the group. Cr Rick congratulated Peachester History Committee members on this initiative, which will help to preserve Nev’s inspiring story as part of the oral history of both the Glasshouse Country district and the resilient generation who lived through World War 2. The audio book has been produced in two formats: MP3 (one disk) or a five disk set for CD players. Price $20.00, available from PHC Inc., contact Helen Page (5494 9557) or Jan Gresham (5494 2301).

School News Maleny Show success

Glasshouse Christian College students were thrilled to be awarded approximately 34 prizes and awards in the recent Maleny Show. In agricultural produce, Ag Science students won 11 first prizes for hen eggs, carrots, snow peas, english potatoes, finger limes, passionfruit, collection of organic fruit and four first prizes for Camembert cheese. They also won four second and five third prizes. Cheese judge Mr Colin Cunningham complemented the students on their camembert and said that any commercial producer would be proud to create such quality. All of the agricultural produce entries were submitted in the Open section so the competition was fierce.

GCC’s Ag students also gave a presentation about the science of strawberries and their nutritional benefits before inviting children up to plant their own in special pots. Hospitality students took out first prize for a strawberry jam that was so pure it only had three ingredients – strawberries, lemons and

sugar. Rather than keep the recipe secret, Head of Hospitality and Textiles Mrs Julie Peters along with GCC students, demonstrated the technique on Friday of the show weekend and then handed out pikelets with jam and cream much to the delight of the audience. GCC’s Kitchen Garden embraced this year’s theme of ‘Renew, re-use and recycle’ and every class contributed to the handicrafts section. First prize in the bead section went to 2W, first prize in paper craft went to 2G and third prize in the recycled box class went to 1G. In the age divisions, Prep students won third for their drawings and Year 2 came second for theirs. In the cookery section, the Kitchen Garden took out first prize for roasted beetroot hummus, three second prizes (regular hummus, sweet sauce, and tapenade) and two third prizes (ricotta and butter). Not to be outdone, GCC’s textiles students made their mark by winning two first, two second and three third prizes in the machine sewn section.

Step into the right shoe Knowing your foot type is essential for the best fit and feel of a shoe. People with flat feet (fallen arches) will require a greater level of support and generally more width in a shoe. This is known as ‘pronation control’. Do you have a high instep? A shoe in which the material is softer, follows the contours of the foot and does not compress and constrict is important. This should be combined with a more structured outer sole to control outward rolling of the foot. If you have a balanced foot type, one that neither rolls in or out too much, a ‘neutral’ shoe is perfectly designed for you to allow the foot to flow through your own natural walking cycle. Due to the versatile structure of a neutral shoe, it is a great choice if you are currently wearing orthotics, as they accept these devices with ease. Often discomfort with the fitting of a shoe can be related to the style of lacing applied to the shoe. There are a number of variations that we can suggest. The foot professionals at Stepping Out Podiatry (1300 881 082) have your foot health as a priority, so step into their modern Podiatry Clinic at Landsborough and talk to the people who want to help you.

International Day of Yoga In 2014 the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga. Exploring the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

The Sunshine Coast is buzzing at the moment with southern visitors looking for the winter warmth we can offer, and what a spectacular time to walk or climb in our National Parks. I had the opportunity to walk to Kondalilla Falls last weekend. Depending on your pace, the whole circuit can be walked easily in a few hours. It is incredibly beautiful at this time of year with the swimming hole and waterfall running – making the effort worthwhile. If you walk anticlockwise, it is a little easier, with the majority of the steps heading down. Watch out for the wildlife with plenty of birds and butterflies. The same week encouraged by my success, I walked the 6.5 km Maleny trail. A relatively easy walk but equally stunning as it winds its way around the Maleny Golf Course to the beginning of Gardner’s Falls walk, where there is a lovely shaded picnic area by the water. I understand that eventually there will be a bridge meaning you can cross and walk onto the falls, although the map shows it as being a dead end

it is a circuit starting and ending at the Obi Obi board walk.

Important local information update

The main summit route on Mount Beerwah is temporarily closed following very high rainfall on Saturday, June 4. The route is closed below the overhang on the northern face and above the picnic area. This closure is a precautionary measure following high rainfall events. The risk of large rock fall above the summit route is much higher after heavy rain. The route will be closed for a minimum of seven days. During this time, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will assess the route for any rock fall. If no rock falls are observed, the route will be re-opened.

Are Headaches Robbing You of the Life You Deserve? Are recurring headaches controlling your life? Day after day of missing out on things, or just being miserable, irritable and looking much older than you really are?

Recurring headaches are not normal! While headaches are terribly common, they are NOT normal. The normal condition of the human body is vibrant and healthy...not tired and painful! Pain is our body’s alarm system that something is wrong. So – if you often say “It feels like my head is in a vice”, or “I’ve had migraines since puberty” or “My neck and shoulders are always tight and tense” and you just want to go and lie down then pay close attention now. Four major causes of headaches are dehydration, stress, food intolerance, and neck subluxations. And each of these causes has a path to relief. The most little known is neck subluxation. Can this help your headaches? Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. Upper neck subluxations very commonly cause ‘Cervicogenic Headaches’. This type of headache presents with neck stiffness and pain at the base of your skull, which can sometimes radiate through to your eyes. Drugs can reduce the symptoms (turn off the body’s alarm) for a while, but they do not correct the cause – and the symptoms return. Many studies have shown the benefits of treating the neck subluxations of headache sufferers, including the Boline and Duke Studies. If you are having headaches something is wrong. Chiropractic is a safe and effective form of healthcare that treats a major cause of headaches, the Subluxation. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if your headaches are a good fit for our very successful Headache Relief Program. Visitor Information Centre Update

I have completed a Bachelor of Asian Studies (Hons) and have worked in university administration for many years. I also served as a pastor of a local church for 10 years. I later completed a diploma of counselling and love mentoring women and families to support and equip them to reach their potential. I am married with a seven-year-old daughter. In addition, I volunteer in a number of community groups on a not-for-profit basis including my daughter’s dance club and local church. I also enjoy camping with my family, kayaking, marshmallows around the campfire, going to the beach, and travelling both within Australian and internationally including Asia and the Pacific. In standing for the Family First party I believe it is time to stand up and start strongly supporting families and small business. I believe that in order to build a strong Australia it is imperative that we build strong families. I am keen to promote and support legislation which will result in the health, wellbeing, welfare, safety and unity of families in Australia. I also desire to oppose legislation that would impact negatively upon families. In addition, I would like to promote and encourage community support for the education and provision of assistance to reduce the impact of family breakdown in Australia. Family First is Australia’s leading independent party, with long experience serving in the balance-of-power all over the nation. As a candidate for Family First I support the following policies: 1. Jobs – your right to work, and helping young people get jobs 2. Affordable housing – reviving the Great Australian Dream of home ownership for all 3. Lower taxes – a 20% tax rate for all Australians and less red tape 4. Affordable energy – getting our living costs and business costs down so more people have jobs 5. Safer roads – fixing Queensland’s ‘black spots’ to make our roads safer for all 6. Water and export markets for family farms – land and water ownership policies to help our farmers feed the world 7. Free speech, freedom of conscience and religion – defending the freedoms upon which this great nation was built.

Like to know more about the candidates … check out our ‘Fight for Fisher’ webpage – go to www.gcnews.com.au, select the ‘Read’ tab, then ‘Fight for Fisher” – where you’ll find information on all the candidates vying for your vote in the seat of Fisher. JUNE 15 2016 |

You Said It At it again

The leaders of our major political parties are at it again with their hand-outs. They give the impression that they are trying to buy votes. Once people are given something, it is almost impossible to take it away. The Abbott government found that out. Older people in particular, will remember when this country had a footwear industry and a clothing industry, and we are also about to lose our car manufacturing industry. Why did that occur? To put it simply, successive governments priced us out of the world market. My wife and I had four children and we managed quite nicely without all these handouts. Another important issue as far as I am concerned is that mothers should be home looking after and bonding with their children up until they start their schooling. When did a Federal Government last balance their budget? It is so far back that I cannot remember when one finished up in the black. It is bad practice to always be paying out large sums in loan interest. I would ask readers to give serious thought to what has been happening and to ask candidates what they are going to do about it? Or are they just going to toe the line with what their party leaders say? Reg Glass House Mountains

Current state of politics

It was refreshing to read John Spellmans letter about the current state of politics in Australia. It shows the disregard that Turnbull has for the people of this nation when he insults Pauline Hanson saying she has no place in politics. Every Australian has a place in politics as it is their right. Let’s hope that statement backfires on him as it should. The current Government under Turnbull are so far to the left they are almost Green in fact they are going to preference their votes to the Greens in some electorates. We want to rid our nation of political correctness, restore our freedom of speech, stop the wholesale selling of our precious farmland to international entities and governments, and outlaw Halal certification which every Australian is paying dearly for. We also need to stop messing with the superannuation system, look after our pensioners and veterans (instead of the billions given to overseas aid which in many cases ends up in the pockets of corrupt officials), end the age of

entitlement especially for Politicians, and reduce the size of the Public service who overgovern our lives. The Labor Party is run by the unions and the Greens are so unreasonable and want to take us back to the dim dark days, so no options there. If we are going to change the left wing mindset of the two party system in Australia then we need to get the Australian Liberty Alliance into the Senate. If you want to preserve our way of life and values, not only for us but for our children and grandchildren, then these are the guys to vote for. I could go on but I suggest all readers 'Google' the Australian Liberty Alliance to better inform themselves. Good Luck to John Spellman and his party. Graeme Robinson Maleny

Level crossing closures

Unfortunately I have been unable to attend the recent meetings on the duplication of the railway tracks between Beerburrum and Nambour so have not seen any of the proposals on paper. Firstly I would like to tell the planners to think outside of the square and look at alternatives other than leaving the track levels where they are, it makes it difficult for the motoring and pedestrian public. The Barrs Road crossing could be well solved with an under pass by raising the track level and lowering the road level. A four metre clearance would be adequate as high vehicles of which seldom use this crossing could access the area via Old Gympie Road. The two Landsborough crossings would be more difficult to solve. The building of traffic bridges would see again what has happened to Beerwah with the closure of many small businesses on the eastern side of Landsborough. My first suggested solution here would be to lower the rail track with a cutting and installing a central platform at Landsborough with suitable access for passengers. The cutting could be covered between the two existing crossings and a larger car park installed. My next suggestion would be to raise the rail tracks through Landsborough and again install a central platform with suitable passenger access. Again the car park could be built under the rail tracks. Both of these suggestions do not need the historic station to be moved and would still be able to operate as it does today on completion of works. Business finance made simple.

Unfortunately both of these options would require the building of a temporary rail tracks during construction of either alternative, but I am sure the residents of Landsborough would be very happy with either solution. Remember the solution to this problem has to last well into the future so do it right the first time. W. Hyde Beerwah

Take the shirt off our backs as well!

This week we saw the extraordinary statement by Labor’s trade spokeswoman, Penny Wong, saying she would make it easier for foreigners to buy up our Australian farms. She would do this by lifting the threshold at which the Foreign Investment Review Board scrutinises a sale from $15 million to an outrageous $50 million dollars! Further, Labor would also scrap a special foreign investment review on the purchase of prime Australian agricultural land and businesses. The LNP is no better. If anything they are probably even more devious than Labor. Take the proposed sale of the massive Kidman Station property to the Chinese for example. The treasurer, Scott Morrison says he has blocked the sale of the station, but in reality all he has done is put a 90 day moratorium on any decision which, very conveniently, takes it past the July 2 election date. It effectively gets it ‘off the books’ for the time being and makes it a non-election issue. The so called ‘major’ party’s attitude to foreigners buying us up appears to be ‘Hey, while you’re at it, take the shirt off our backs as well!’ So eager are they to sell us out. The Australian Liberty Alliance (ALA) believes this sell off of our nation has got to stop. Rather than making it easier for foreigners to buy us out we intend to make it as tough as we can. Our policy is simple but effective. If we cannot buy land or own local enterprises in your country, then you will not be allowed to buy land or locally owned enterprises here in Australia. We are determined to keep Australia in Australian’s hands. John Spellman ALA candidate for Fisher

Letter of the Week Burning issue for Bells Creek residents Last Thursday, GC&M News was contacted by Steven Reeves who is frustrated with the lack of adequate response and action that appears to happen whenever a car is burnt out in his part of the region (Bells Creek). Below is his explanation … We’ve been having problems with burnt out cars on Bells Creek Road for some time, and calling the council is mostly a waste of time. They seem very helpful but do very little, and are full of excuses. And I’m frustrated with the responses of the authorities to a growing problem in the area. Here are photos of some recent ones. Top right (dual cab) is just off Coochin Road and clearly visible on route to Coochin Creek camp ground … great look for visitors to the area! Then there’s a council clean-up of a burnt car, or their attempted clean up - rate payers money in action! Another is a fresh one this morning. It has been inspected by police and the fire brigade, then left on the road!

Finally there is a Falcon which we have been trying to get council to move for weeks. They claim that it was on forestry land ... had to laugh this morning as a local resident in total disgust has towed it 6m closer to the road, I can only assume to provoke action. Guess they’re just as sick of council’s feeble excuses. And don’t even start me on the dumping issue. Council need to rethink dump fees. The cost of recovering dumped waste from Forestry and Council grounds, and even my driveway, must be astronomical. Most of these cars were complete and unburned until police put tape (take responsibility?) around them. Where upon the windows get smashed and car vandalised and burned. If the police are aware, surely they have a

Editor’s Note Community spirit is alive and well A local resident – who wished to remain anonymous – dropped into the GC&M News office to thank someone for their unexpected kindness of a gift and note. It is as if these first response officers and public servants don’t care about the possibility these car fires could destroy property and threaten lives. Maybe they think that smoke covering the highway is not dangerous. Hopefully this letter will help, as the Bells Creek residents are sick of it. Steven Reeves Bells Creek

3 things to keep in mind when renovating an apartment Whether you live in an apartment yourself and are refinancing for some new features, or own one as an investment property and are keen to squeeze some more value out of your real estate, you might be considering some major renovations. These kinds of upgrades can add a significant sum to the price tag or rental income of the property, but many people seem to forget that it is significantly different from renovating a house. So, just what do you need to consider before busting out the toolbox? There are plenty of ways to update an apartment but are you doing it the right way? There are plenty of ways to update an apartment – but are you doing it the right way? 1) Have you got the body corporate on your side? In strata title apartments, the body

www.gcnews.com.au

corporate needs to be involved with any renovations you decide to do. You cannot simply do what you like in an apartment, despite the fact that you own it, as large renovations could cause a great deal of disruption to your neighbours, as well making it difficult for the managers to keep track of the various workmen and materials required. You need to work with the body corporate, or you could find yourself slapped with hefty fines or even being unable to complete the renovations altogether. 2) Keep practical upgrades in mind Renovating an apartment can sometimes be a little more involved than for a house. While you may be renovating your apartment for aesthetic reasons, this is a great chance to start considering how you

can reduce expenditure on your utility bills as well. Using data from a number of different councils in Australia, Your Home describes how a huge amount of water use in apartments was due to inefficient fixtures and appliances. So, while you are ripping out that old sink, consider installing something that is more efficient rather than just more elegant – you may find yourself saving a significant amount on your water bill. 3) Try to reduce clutter One of the realities of living in an apartment is that you will often have a lot less floor space than people living in a detached home. Rather than doing a 1:1 transfer, why not consider doing your best to use space-saving fixtures instead? Replacing a bath with a shower or pulling out a kitchen counter and changing it

into a central island instead, for example. In-built storage can be shifted to the walls, though of course it’s important to strike a balance between uncluttered walls and uncluttered floors. Renovating an apartment can sometimes be a little more involved than for a house, but with the right preparation and attitude, you can turn that unit into a valuable addition to your portfolio!

Mooloolah State School Indigenous students celebrate Wandiny Day Identified students of Mooloolah State School recently went to Wandiny celebrations at Beerwah State High. It was a fabulous day with the students learning many new things. The day started with an opening ceremony from members of the Gubbi Gubbi tribe to introduce themselves and acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land. The students then split into groups and participated in different workshops. Firstly, we learnt some traditional dance moves that we later played some games with. Then we moved onto learning about the different weapons and tools made and used Students from Mooloolah by Indigenous people, the students were State School learning in awe of how they made them and the traditional dance moves stories behind them. For the last activity we participated in painting communication sticks and rocks of harmony with the earth. Students and staff at Mooloolah State School would like to thank Beerwah High for inviting us to share in this special day - we had a wonderful time!

My extensive experience gives me a perspective that leads to the following conclusions. The economy is not an end in itself. It is a mechanism that allows people to achieve what they want and need. The environment is rarely evaluated in the ‘bottom line’. Ignoring the long-term effects we have on the environment always costs us more.

In addition, my experience includes working for organisations in financial services, state and local governments, health, building and construction. I have chaired and served on boards of 26

management and reviews in vocational education, public administration, community and professional associations. I have represented the Queensland Government as an industrial relations advocate often needing to run economic arguments for a prosperous state economy. I believe these experiences would equip me well to represent the region at the federal level of government. When I ran in the local government for Mayor of the Sunshine Coast I undertook a great deal of research

From there you’ll find each candidate. Clicking on their photo will open a page which has a candidate profile and answers to questions posed to them as part of our election coverage.

Question to the Candidates

Q1 Confidence in managing the Australian

economy is a big factor in people’s minds when they come to cast their vote. How can local voters be confident that you have an adequate understanding of the complexities of the Australian economy and so can best represent their best interests in Parliament? And what would be some localised economy issues concerning to local voters.?

Increasing inequality leads to social deterioration. We can’t all have equal outcomes but we can strive for equality of opportunity. Turning to local issues, the LNP have neglected our region. Fisher and Fairfax have both been widely reported to be in recession. Our local economy needs small business, big business and government working in tandem. I am extremely optimistic about our future because we have unique opportunities. With the right investment, public and private, we can play to our strengths. Environmental excellence, tourism, education, health, aged care, the arts. These are areas in which we excel. Without the right government investment in proper NBN and infrastructure we will see our children and grandchildren inheriting further decline. Let’s do it right for them. With my knowledge, drive and experience we can make it happen. Australia what needs to be done … namely a reduction in bureaucracy red tape – e.g. 100 hrs per annum tax reporting on top of complete disincentives to excel. Even the HECS system is a recipe to underachieve. This coupled with the unlevel playing field of domestic taxation (e.g. no tax revenue from foreign online purchases below a $1,000 ceiling), so many rules and regulations and even penalty rates as a complete disincentive to employ Australian workers. This is the fundamental reason why no one is able to or even wants to invest in Australian manufacturing, agriculture, mining or start-ups, and with more than half the workforce working for the government.

and listened to people in building a progressive region strategy for the Sunshine Coast. I know it is important to develop and diversify the local economy, increase the level of innovation and learning whilst at the same time maintaining the quality of the natural environment. The need to provide infrastructure, jobs and transition to a new economy based around clean and green renewable energy on the Sunshine Coast are major challenges I want to be able to support. The rail duplication to Nambour for fast and efficient transport, road upgrades, ensuring the NBN rollout of cable provided high speed internet connection and growing local jobs, are some of the issues I would address. I am fortunate to belong to The Greens which is a party that is fiscally responsible and will ensure initiatives are fully costed when they are considered by the Australian parliament. www.gcnews.com.au

Q1

Australians are right to be very concerned about our economy. For the last 30 years under successive LNP and Labor governments our economy has gone from one that was always in the black to one that is now always in the red. Thirty years of mismanagement from both sides has seen actual full time jobs decline to their lowest level on record. Even our own ATO sends Aussie jobs offshore to the Philippines! Every election, they argue that they have the

answers, but who believes them anymore? Deregulation and Free Trade Agreements have been a curse upon this country. Deregulation lines the pockets of the banks and the multinationals at the expense of ordinary Australians. Look at what it has done to the dairy, electricity and water supply industries just to name a few. Dairy farmers are going broke while electricity and water charges are going through the roof. FTA’s have brought down our standard of living

Q1

If I was a 'normal' political candidate then I would answer this question by telling you two things: (1) that I, and my Party, understand the economy greatly; and (2) how the other candidate and their Party have little understanding of it. Then, I would pick a topical local issue and promise that I, if elected, will give you lots of money to fix it. We ask political candidates questions like this because they make decisions without us, and

we want to know if they think like we do. This system is called 'Representative Democracy'. 'Direct Democracy' is different because, in Direct Democracy, the citizens are the ones who make the decision. Therefore, in regard to what is the best way to manage the Australian Economy and what localised economic issue you want me to support in parliament, if I got elected, you, the people of Fisher, would be telling me what decision to make. I have signed an undertaking to do whatever you tell me to do.

Q1

As someone who has owned and operated small businesses throughout my working life, and as someone who has raised a family on the Sunshine Coast, I understand the economic issues that are of concern to local residents. The key issue I pick up when I move around the Sunshine Coast talking to families and small business owners is economic confidence, in particular the concern around the PalaszczukLabor Government’s lack of a coherent economic

plan for Queensland. They are concerned about what the election of a Shorten-Labor Government would mean for local families. As the LNP Candidate for Fisher, I am the only candidate running in this election whose party has an economic plan. The LNP understands that small business is the engine room of the economy, and our carefully structured economic plan will ease the tax burden

as we try to compete with low overseas wages and sweat shop conditions. Is this what we want as Australians? The ALA will arrest these issues by not allowing unfair trade to destroy Australian jobs. We will renegotiate all FTA’s which are disadvantageous to Australia’s interests. We will reduce the size of government and halt all wasteful expenditure. We will drastically reduce immigration to free up jobs for our own people. Jobs, electricity, water and health care are essential to our way of life. I make this promise to Fisher residents – I will do everything in my power to increase jobs, while at the same time bring down the cost of essential services. I will work tirelessly to find ways to do it.

I am not a normal politician and our Party is very different to the other 'normal' Parties. If you are happy with the current 'brand' of politician and the 'representative' system of government then you should not vote for me. All the other candidates are running to become your representative in government whereas I am running to give you access, directly, into the decision making process of government. But please don't think that if Online Direct Democracy gets elected that the 'whole' system will change. We only have 12 candidates and there are a total of 226 seats in the Australian Parliament.

on small business, which will grow the economy and create jobs. We will back small businesses by cutting the company tax rate to 27.5% for businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million and we will increase the unincorporated tax discount from 5 to 8%. We will help bring great business ideas to market and our export trade deals will generate 19,000 new export opportunities, giving farmers a competitive edge and opening up new markets for our services industries. We will also restore the rule of law on building sites by re-establishing the Australian Building and Construction Commission. Only the LNP has an economic plan that delivers the benefits of a growing economy and more jobs.

Dare to be wild

Caboolture Car Club Show

The Maleny Film Society is screening ‘Dare to be Wild’, a romantic biopic about a young Irish woman who won a Gold Medal at the 2002 Chelsea Flower Show on Saturday, June 18. Mary Reynolds, an unknown 28-year-old Dublin environmentalist, had the audacity to enter the Royal Chelsea Flower Show – lacking financial backing and relying on a meagre support team – and won! Her submission was based on taking inspiration for landscape design from human connection to the wilderness of the ‘wild west’ of the Wicklow Mountains. Titled ‘Tearmann si – a Celtic Sanctuary’, rooted in Irish mythology, her design began an amazing career for Mary. Her living artworks are now celebrated in many places in the UK, including Kew Gardens and the Cornish coast. Local Blackall Range landscape designer Tohm Hajncl of Amber Leaf Landscaping will present a talk before the film, which was shot in Dublin, County Wicklow and County Cork. Direction and script are by Vivienne De Courcy, with Emma and her partner Christy Collard played by the aptly chosen Emma Greenwell and Tom Hughes. The trees are Hawthorn and Elder; the plants have names such as Yarrow, Thrift and Spleenwort – but this film will resonate with all locals involved in Landcare, Gardens for Wildlife and all gardeners ‘on the Edge’. Doors open for dinner at 6.00pm catered by Wild Rocket, with the introduction at 8.15pm. MFS members may pre-book on-line or via the Maleny Information Centre. Check the website: malenyfilmsociety.info.

Forgiveness

Luke Chapter7 verse 48 …Then Jesus said to the woman ‘your sins are forgiven….’ The first level of forgiveness is really not a level of forgiveness. It’s those people who say, “I’ll never forgive, no matter what.” Many people believe forgiveness to be sign of weakness. The common thought is that strong people don’t have to forgive. This attitude more often than not comes because of the depth of the hurt: a love betrayed; a commitment broken. Although we may reject this level we often practice it. The second level is ‘forgive but never forget.’ This is forgiveness on a superficial level. We hold back. We will not trust again. At this level an important question to ask is, ‘is this really forgiveness?’ Can we really forgive and forget? Forgiveness is the restoration of the relationship to what it was before the event which ruptured it took place. The third level is a bit more Christian. We forgive because it is obligatory. We forgive someone because Jesus said ‘Forgive other 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM people.’ GCNEWS What Add wesept realise here is that outward

expression does not necessarily denote what has taken place within us. We can say. ‘I forgive, I forgive, I forgive,’ until the words become redundant and run upon each other. The danger here is not just that we don’t forgive other people; it’s that we betray ourselves into thinking that we have forgiven someone when we really haven’t. The fourth level is the Christian level. It’s the hardest level. It’s the one we rarely attain, but the one to which we should be pointing: and, that’s where we forgive because it’s part of God’s nature to forgive and we want to be like God. We forgive even when others don’t want forgiveness. They were mocking Jesus and Jesus still said ‘Father forgive them.’ Forgiveness is such a part of God’s nature that to know God is to be forgiven. We believe what Jesus knew as he hung there on the cross bearing our sin – that, until we forgive other people, we are not ready to experience forgiveness. For forgiveness is part of the nature of God. And, until we really love someone, we will never forgive them. That’s what forgiveness is all about. Forgiveness is Jesus Christ hanging on the cross for our sins saying, ‘Father forgive these people who don’t even care whether or not they’re forgiven.’

Environment Biddy the echidna enjoys a healing bath

Biddy the echidna was found injured in a backyard in Maryborough with cuts to the back, legs and spines. With injuries explained only by the nearby slashing work taking place, Biddy was quickly brought to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for treatment. X-rays showed a minor rib fracture but miraculously, due to the nature of the injuries, Biddy’s beak remained perfectly intact—a very fortunate occurrence given that damage to an echidna’s beak is detrimental to their ability to find food and is, for the most part, irreparable. The cuts and abrasions to Biddy’s back were quite severe and given the unique features of an echidna, the only way to thoroughly disinfect them without the spines getting in the way was an antiseptic bath. Following Biddy’s bubble bath, a team of three worked on removing the residual dirt and hair from between each spine (a long and careful task), before de-ticking the entire body and suturing the deep wound on the front right leg. Biddy’s treating vet, Dr Sharon Griffiths says Biddy is very lucky and the prognosis is looking good. “Biddy came to us in distress with severe cuts and abrasions on the back and leg, as well as broken, missing and bent spines. Apart from the obvious injuries, Biddy is a healthy adult echidna who after a lot of care and attention should be ready to return to life in the wild,” said Dr Sharon. “Echidnas certainly aren’t the easiest animals to treat as they pose a few very obvious, very spiky challenges. But no matter how difficult it may be, it’s very rewarding in the end to see such a unique native Australian animal back out in the wild,” she added.

Know your weeds

with Ann McGrath I just can’t seem to get past the weeds! Big weeds, small weeds, tall weeds, fat weeds, skinny weeds, beautiful weeds and ugly weeds! All with the potential to destroy our unique bushland and the wildlife that is an integral part of it. What is a weed? I call it a beautiful bush – others call it a weed. According to dictionary.com a weed is any undesirable or troublesome plant, especially one that grows profusely where it is not wanted or a valueless plant growing wild, especially one that grows on cultivated ground to the exclusion or injury of the desired crop. So what makes a plant undesirable or troublesome? In our area, not all exotics are weeds and not all Australian natives are desirable. If you, like me, believe that our unique bushland and wildlife is worth saving then any plant that displaces the native flora is undesirable and troublesome. Our governments spend huge amounts of money in an attempt to prevent / control weeds that are destroying (or have the potential to destroy) our bush and native wildlife, but without the help of individuals their job is very, very difficult. I encourage you to get to know which plants are problems and what they look like, especially as young plants. It’s easy to pull out a small Cadagi tree but not so easy to ret rid of one that is 30m tall. Information is readily available. Contact your local Landcare group, the Sunshine Coast Council or search the internet to identify the weeds that are an issue in our part of the world. Then join the war in your own back yard. ‘Just gotta love the bush’

In the Garden

What’s hot: Succulents this year’s gardening trend They’re uniting seasoned green thumbs, hipsters and first-time gardeners alike, and according to horticulture expert and Queensland Garden Expo speaker Annette McFarlane, succulents are the latest ‘must-have’ decorator item. “Succulents have made a real comeback and you can now see them gracing the covers of the most glamorous interior design magazines,” Annette said. “Novice gardeners recognise just how easy they are to grow and experienced gardeners have become addicted collectors, inspired by the variety available. Children are intrigued too thanks to the shapes, sizes and patterns of succulent plants, not to mention those incredible blooms!” With the Queensland Garden Expo only weeks away, Annette expects that succulents will be one of the hot favourites on offer. Here, Annette shares why these trendy and colourful plants make the perfect addition to any home or garden. Suitable for any space, anywhere If you think succulents are just for sunny spots, think again. Some thrive in complete shade; others in full sun, indoors or outdoors. Name your most challenging site and you will find a succulent that is perfectly suited. Low maintenance Forgetful when it comes to watering? Thick and fleshy leaves, stems and tubers ensure succulents can withstand long periods without water. Some indoor varieties cope perfectly well with no water for three months or more.

Phone: 5439 0999

Perfect for upcycling Succulents make it easy to create your own unique living work of art. Plant them in recycled containers like cups and saucers, teapots or just about anything you want to reuse. Clean and green Research proves just how effective plants are at absorbing toxic gases given off by paint, carpet and computers in our indoor environment. A succulent is the perfect, no fuss, air-filtering plant to have around the home. Quirky and colourful Whether rounded, ruffled or spiky, or a shade of burgundy, blue-green or even black, succulents are fascinating plants that capture attention and make bright and attractive focal points around the house and garden. Annette McFarlane is the host of Gardening Talkback on ABC 612, as well as a horticulturalist, teacher, sustainability educator, garden writer and author. Psilotum nudum While this is not a plant you would usually find in a nursery, it is a most interesting species. Skeleton Fork Fern has been called the plant ‘that evolution forgot’ because it closely resembles fossils of early vascular plants. The plants we know today are all vascular plants in that the water and nutrients are transported throughout the plant by internal vessels. Not a true fern but a fern ‘relative’, Psilotum nudum has no true roots, leaves, flowers or seeds. It does have underground stems through which Mycorrhizal fungi in the soil provide a source of nutrients. This plant is usually seen as an epiphyte growing in rock crevices, tree forks in mulch and in mulch at the base of trees. The fronds growing above the plant are often pendulous with many tufted ends and tiny yellow spore cases which appear flower-like. Psilotum nudum is believed to have existed in the current state for millions of years and is found in many countries across the world.

Gardening on the Edge delights again Last weekend saw the annual Gardening on the Edge event held around Maleny. Organised by the Maleny Garden Club, the trail of six open gardens showcased some fine examples of Maleny gardens at their best. The gardens showcased how locals use the variations in climate, aspect, soils and geography which they are challenged with, and combine this with their passion for plants and gardening to produce some truly stunning landscapes. All the gardens displayed the pride and enthusiasm – sometimes bordering on obsession – which their owners clearly have for their respective ‘little piece of paradise’. One common feature was the integration of productive gardening with aesthetic landscaping. All had fruit trees and vegetable gardens. The abundance of fruiting citrus shows just how suited to the region they are. But almost all six gardens showed the same problems … this being attack by parrots and lorikeets. Many a mandarin tree had evidence of fruit eaten or partially eaten by these birds – a real problem for any home gardener. Camellias were again a stand out feature of many gardens. And so they should be, as the rich volcanic soil combined with the cooler winter weather is the perfect environment for these show-stoppers. Saturday saw superb weather draw sizeable crowds to all the gardens, keeping the ticket-taker volunteers busy. Sunday’s chillier temperature had people rugging up, but it seemed that people were just as happy to have a stickybeak about the gardens. It just meant that the hot tea and coffee sales skyrocketed. Here we’ve presented a number of photos from the gardens. Mark down the weekend of June 10 and 11 next year in your diaries, when there’ll be six different gardens on display again.

The property is adjacent to a 100 acre Nature Reserve that is home to the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and is located only 3kms to the historic town of Landsborough’s school, shops, and train station. Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

The Aussie Millionaire Mick appears on 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' and toward the end of the program had already won 500,000 dollars. "You've done very well so far," said Eddie Maguire, the show's presenter, "but for a million dollars, you've only got one life-line left, phone a friend. Everything is riding on this question. Will you go for it?" "Sure," said Mick. "I'll have a go!" "Which of the following birds does not build its own nest? a) Sparrow, b) Thrush, c) Magpie, d) Cuckoo?" "I haven't got a clue," said Mick, ''So I'll use me last lifeline and phone me mate Steveo back home. Mick called up his mate Steveo, and told him

the circumstances and repeated the question to him. "Bloody hell, Mick!" that’s so obvious - it's a cuckoo." "Are you sure?" "I’m bloody sure." Mick hung up the phone and told Eddie, "I'll go with cuckoo as me answer." "Is that your final answer?" asked Eddie. "Yep it is." There was a long, long pause and then the presenter screamed, "Cuckoo is the correct answer! Mick, you've won 1 million dollars!" The next night, Mick invited Steveo to their local pub to buy him a drink. "Tell me, Steveo, how the hell did you know it was the Cuckoo that doesn't build its own nest?" "Because, he lives in a friggin’ clock!" John Gyzemyter, Maleny

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With you as an Air sign, meeting up with the Full Moon in a fire sign, this would be either a warning light to be aware of not getting your signals crossed. Then the best course for the week is to be kind in expressing your view points. This is because the Moon carries critical blunderings. Desire for entertainment is stimulated. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The week deserves conservative handling of a revised idea, plan or presentation. Then again, you may ditch it altogether and look to birth something new out of the ashes of the old. Nevertheless finalise all details and pull together loose ends to reach closure after Monday’s Full Moon. Be alert for the unexpected responses. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The Full Moon on June 20 is on the last degree of your sign. This is the opportunity to tie up all the loose ends on an old project or one that is about to close, in order to make way for a new cycle. Some may find that their nervous system is taking a pounding and they need to treat the sciatic nerve or cramping. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 If you have to attend to urgencies under this Full Moon week, then take time to refresh yourself away from the maddening crowd. Uranus plays a lovely tune with Venus, the Sun and Mercury, to find you innovative and new high tech solutions. There may be a pet concern and that has to be treated quickly. Check emails.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You are in an inspiring week as the Full Moon highlights the possibility of a high-volume networking period, and that includes various scenarios to juggle. The world outside your private cocoon needs your help in that you have a big part to play in the lives of others. Your ruling planet, Uranus, brings happy, unexpected surprises. PISCES February 20 – March 20 There is activity about your financial affairs, assets, possessions, purchases and jazzy new tech gadgets. With Venus and the sun and Mercury entering the sign of Cancer, love and romance flow effortlessly. Young children may be attracted to you, as you play the clown. Pluto supports your committed relationship. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The Full Moon is coming up after this weekend and it will probably find you juggling plans concerning travel. You are sorting out a chance to meet up with distant relatives. Current trends stimulate your ambition and sharpen your desire for gain and recognition. Venus into Cancer should enhance your domestic life. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There are matters from earlier in this month resurfacing with high emotional energy as the Full Moon on Monday, June 20 is at the last degree of Sagittarius. That means loose ends need to be tied up so you can start a new cycle. Why not think yourself out of the old box and become much more progressive and inventive?

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Look out for a sparkling and exciting week ahead as Uranus puts in a good word for you with Venus, the Sun and Mercury. This is the week that gives you a chance to do things differently or make creative changes. Believe in those friends who are inventive and progressive. Innovation is the key to success for you now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Everyone, including you, might be on edge if you sensed there was trouble brewing. Just tackle the obstruction with responsibility and maturity. It’s essential that you be reliable even amid shifting sands under foot. The Full Moon brings an urgency to loose ends and accumulation in some ongoing work or health matter. LEO July 23 – August 22 A Sagittarius Full Moon comes up around June 20. This Full Moon places the accent on your creative talents. If you are able to bring the whole family together, everyone would appreciate an outing to a sporting event. You find solutions and make steady improvement where necessary. Enjoy personal recreation. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This is not your week to rattle anyone’s cages, or stay around clients that irritate you. If things at home are still difficult, you should expect a sudden shift to happier moods and events by early evening. With the Full Moon in the last degree in the sign of Sagittarius it requires loose ends to be tied up in any family affairs.
