udging by some of the photos sent through this week from a number of the local schools from their Book Week celebrations, quite a lot of parents must have been kept busy making costumes. I have to say it was tough choosing a photo for the front page, but once we had seen the delightful orangefaced, green-haired Oompa-Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory we couldn’t go past them. As a lover of reading books I must say I think it is great for the school to capture the imaginations of the kids and give them the opportunity to ‘bring the characters’ off the pages (yes, real paper pages) and into the classroom. I also loved that many of the teachers embraced the opportunity to dress up as well. It must have made for plenty of fun in the classrooms when your teacher is dressed as the ‘Cat in the Hat’ or ‘Where’s Wally’. I might just consult the GCNews team and see if we can introduce Book Week in our office next year – I am thinking I might make a great Pirate Wench? Regards,

Local News Green light for Glass House intersection Local State Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, has some great news for the township of Glass House Mountains and users of Steve Irwin Way … the Reed Street traffic light plans are now at the construction stage. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have confirmed with Mr Powell that the preliminary works for the $2.7 million Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection upgrade were recently undertaken. “This involved pavement investigations where TMR drilled into the road to take material samples,” Mr Powell said. “This will inform their design stage of the works, with the on-ground works planning to start before the end of the year. “TMR have indicated a three to four month construction period, which puts the end date sometime around Easter.” Mr Powell reminded locals that they should expect some disruptions during construction, but Main Roads have assured him that every effort will be made to reduce impacts. “TMR have said that there will be minor construction noise, lighting, vibration and dust while work is taking place.
“Partial lane closures, traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and road signage will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers. Motorists may experience minor delays during these works. “In my six plus years as the MP for this region, I have been very clear that delivering this project was in my top five priorities for the electorate. With your help, we fought together to show how desperately needed these lights were for our community and we now have a light at the end of a long tunnel. “The campaign that the community ran last year certainly demonstrated how strongly they would fight to get a positive outcome to ensure the long term safety of our community – well done to all of you!”

Engineering talent recognised The best in up-and-coming Engineering talent was celebrated at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s 2015 Engineering Awards presentation last Wednesday, with one going to former Beerwah High student Elice Freshwater. The ceremony saw a combined total of 11 scholarships and bursaries funded by a range of Sunshine Coast businesses. While she was at school Elice enjoyed both Physics and Graphics, so the school guidance officer suggested she go into Civil Engineering. Now in her fourth and final year of her course qualification, Elice is the recipient of the GHD Scholarship in Engineering - Environment and Water. Senior Lecturer in Engineering Dr Richard White said these awards acknowledge high level performance by students. “As a combination of both their academic record and extra-curricular activities they have undertaken to contribute to the community,” Dr White said. While studying, Elice has also worked part-time at Club Glass House and as well as working on Moffat Farms and more recently she has been working casually at Shadforths Civil Engineering. Elice is the first person in her family to attend university, so receiving the scholarship has been really significant for her and her achievement has been a great source of pride for her family. Elice said her parents Brendan and Chris Freshwater are hard workers who have made plenty of sacrifices so that she and her younger sister
Selena could attend university and throughout her time studying she made sure she made the most of the opportunities presented to her. Elice believes that working on Wayne and Craig Moffat’s pineapple farm at Glass House has given her great experience of working in a male dominated working environment which is also the case for engineering. "I was also really fortunate that Wayne and Craig believed in my capacity and gave me the opportunity to take on challenging tasks that tested my skills but helped develop my confidence," she said. “My parents have definitely been role models for both Selena and me." Now younger sister Selena, who is a second year Education student, also has her sister Elice to inspire her to do her best. While she still has about six weeks until she completes all her university requirements, Elice is about to start working full-time for Shadforths as a Site Engineer at Caloundra South.

Mary Grigor Centre receives National Trust Award The design and construction of the Mary Grigor Centre, an archival and interpretive centre located within the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct at Glass House Mountains, has been recognised with a Gold Award in the prestigious National Trust Queensland Heritage Awards. Mayor Mark Jamieson accepted the award at Old Government House in Brisbane last week. The National Trust awards highlight projects and people that demonstrate excellence in the conservation and promotion of Queensland’s historic and Indigenous cultural heritage. Funded by Council’s Heritage Levy, the Mary Grigor Centre received the top prize within the Agency Conservation category which was open to government agencies and government organisations at any level for programs and projects that demonstrated excellence in planning, conservation, interpretation and promotion of heritage. Mayor Jamieson said it was a great honour to accept the award which was a fitting recognition of the vision and commitment to both the conservation and interpretation of the heritagelisted Bankfoot House Precinct, and the new Mary Grigor Centre. “I’d like to pay tribute and thank everyone who has made a contribution to the Centre and the overall Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct and encourage all of our Coast residents to take a look at a special place in our region,” he said. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said
Cr Rick Baberowski, Ron Gillinder, Debbie Angell, Peter Connell, Louise Bauer, Mayor Mark Jamieson. Photographer Tim Nemeth council identified the Bankfoot House site as having cultural and historical significance to the area and purchased the property specifically to conserve the collection and to facilitate community access. “The Friends of Bankfoot House have been instrumental in ensuring the success of the Mary Grigor Centre, named after renowned local woman Mary Grigor who lived in Bankfoot House in the 1800s, by their dedication, high skill level and commitment.” Mayor Mark Jamieson, with his Cultural Heritage team from the Sunshine Coast Council, and Ron Gillinder from Friends of Bankfoot House, were
on hand to receive a gold award at the National Trust Queensland’s Heritage Awards presentation on August 20. The gold award was in the Agency Conservation category and recognised the design, construction and purpose of the new Mary Grigor Centre within the Bankfoot House precinct. President of the Friends of Bankfoot House, Ron Gillinder, said the new interpretive centre provides an ideal reception point for visitors to the historic house and allows better scheduling of house tours in a comfortable setting. The centre was funded from the Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Levy.

Students at Glass House Mountain State School have shown their appreciation to Hanson’s Glass House Quarry at their weekly school assembly this week for the $18,000.00 funding that Hanson helped with for the installation of air conditioning in every classroom of the school. School Principal Elizabeth Somers said the generous funding would mean a real difference to the entire school. “As well as providing a more comfortable environment in the classrooms for learning, the air conditioning is proving to reduce road traffic noise and dust we often experience on Coonowrin Road,” she said. “We’re extremely grateful and we are looking forward to summer for more reasons than usual!” Hanson's Glass House Quarry Manager Craig Stevens said the project became one of his highest priorities from late last year to ensure the school received the funding quickly and enable the installation to take place before the end of the school year. “We’re always happy to contribute funds to the local community and we realised that this upgrade for classes would not just help students get through the steamy weather but make it easier to concentrate in class by having the windows closed to keep traffic noise out,” Craig said. “We do our best to minimise the number of trucks travelling throughout the area each day but unfortunately the road cannot be avoided, so when I found out about the shortfall for the amount of money needed for the installation, I felt that the
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, Manager of Hanson’s Quarry Craig Stevens, P&C President Jaye Claes and Principal Elizabeth Somers, Eva Radenovic, Stefan Staermose and Chevarny Norcott quarry should do what we can to help.” Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said it was truly a great delight to visit with the Glass House Mountains State School last week. "I was able to participate in their parade, hand out awards and take a tour," he said. “A huge thanks to everyone at the school and the wider community who have helped achieve this great outcome for the students and teachers.'' The Glass House Quarry employs many local employees, drivers and contractors and is an active part of a local business community network that reinvests money within the local area by purchasing from and supporting other local businesses.

Better broadband for Beerwah The National Broadband Network – the nation-wide upgrade of Australia’s existing telecommunications systems – has arrived in Beerwah. Last week the company that was given the task to construct the network – NBN Co – held an information session afternoon at the Beerwah Community Hall. This corresponds with the company lodging a Material Change of Use application with Sunshine Coast Council where NBN Co identified their wish to construct a fixed wireless radio tower on Rupari Hill behind the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre. Their plan is to construct a 30 metre mono-pole tower, atop which will sit transmitter/receiver antennae through which the wireless broadband service will eventually be delivered to properties that will be outside the superior fibre network. According to NBN Co representatives at the information session, the towers will be transmitting wireless broadband to the north, roughly along Old Gympie Road and to the south in a band between Rupari Hill and the Coochin Twins (down through the Canarvon Drive areas). Regrettably, the Coochin Twins will most likely prevent the microwave radio signals going to communities to the south-west (Old Gympie Road, Shaws Road, Lindeman Road and Yeates Road areas). Another limiting factor is that the receiver on the house must have a line of sight to the transmitter tower. If trees are in the way, the signal will be weakened or stopped altogether.
According the NBN Co representatives at the information meeting, those residences that will not be receiving fibre to the node or will not be receiving adequate wireless signal will be offered access through the satellite service. Unfortunately, NBN Co will not give any indications as to who is likely to receive fibre and who will receive wireless, or who will receive neither. They will also not give any indications of where and when other wireless towers will be identified for the non-dense urban areas of Landsborough, Glass House, Beerburrum, Mooloolah, Palmview or Glenview, or the timing for the roll out of the fibre to node network within the denser urban areas of Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House. But according to Kylie Lindsay, NBN Co Corporate Affairs Manager (QLD), they were pleased with the interest and feedback they generated at the Beerwah information session. “It was fantastic to see such a large turnout of interested locals at the Beerwah Fixed Wireless Community Information Session,” she said. “Based on the feedback we received, Beerwah residents are largely supportive of the fixed wireless network proposal and are looking forward to getting access to superfast broadband as soon as possible.” If you wish to view the NBN Co Material Change of Use application and their supporting plans and documents, it can be accessed by going to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and searching using the application reference MCU15/0161.

View to Glenview
Pigs race through Landsborough
Contributed by Judith Mason In August the Glasshouse Country View Club had an enjoyable morning at the Glenview Gardens. It was a bit chilly but we warmed up with our morning tea. Part of our monthly meeting was spent discussing the resolutions that the View club will take further for amendments at government level. Some members had remembered to bring baby photos of themselves, so we spent a good half hour trying to decide who was who! At the meeting we also remembered our lovely Vice President Beryl who passed away last month. Rest in Peace Dear Beryl. Mary Cairncross Park is our next outing on Wednesday, September 2. We meet in the café at 10.00am for morning coffee / tea and then a walk / stroll around the rain forest. If you would like to join us please contact Pauline on 5438 7589. Our next lunch meeting at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club is on Wednesday, September 16, 11.00 for 11.30am and a cost of $22.00. Keep Wednesday, October 7 free for our Fashion Show and morning tea, especially for the mature lady. View are a ladies club who have a luncheon meeting once a month plus a monthly outing. Anyone interested in joining our club, please phone Gwen on 5494 9786 or Lynda on 5494 7875.
Contributed by Kylie Merola They were cute. They were fast. And they were the stars of their very own show – Landsborough Hotel's Charity Pig Races, held on Sunday, August 23. That's right, racing pigs! It was an event with charity at its heart, drawing in a crowd of hundreds of people all keen to have a punt on a pig. This was the third consecutive year that Landsborough Hotel has played host to Noah's Thoroughbred Racing Pigs to generate funds for local community groups. In that time in excess of $13,000.00 has been raised and donated to community organisations. The event consisted of five races in total, each with a unique name such as ‘The Apple Sauce and Crackling Dash’, and ‘The Bacon Blitz’. It was entertainment at its best and a fantastic family day out which included live musical entertainment, a petting zoo, face painting and more. The piglets, each wearing a coloured sequined jacket, heard the bugle fanfare and hurriedly made their way to the starting box to await the commencement of each race. An auction took place for each pig before the races began, with a flurry of activity to bid and secure a race entrant. Each race consisted of an obstacle course complete with hay bales, tyres and ramps which the pigs had to negotiate. There were squeals of excitement as the crowd cheered their preferred pig to the end.
The winning pig was the first to put its snout in the trough of milk at the finish line. The 'owner' of the winning pig received half of the pooled auction money, while the other half was donated to charity. The Landsborough Hotel is well known for their ongoing support within the local community. These recent Pig Races were just another example of the hotel's generosity as they kindly donated the proceeds from the event to four community groups: Landsborough State School P&C, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Bee Gees Soccer Club and the Lions Club of Beerwah. These organisations wish to say a massive thank you to the amazing team at the Landsborough Hotel for their generosity – it really is appreciated!
Maleny Toastmasters highlights Contributed by Margaret Richter Margie Richter, President of Maleny Toastmasters, congratulates Ann Ross of Beerburrum on achieving her Business Degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Ann practised most of her key assignments on her fellow members at the club, who supported her and gave her lots of feedback during her journey. Maleny Toastmasters meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, 6.00pm for 6.30pm, at Maleny Baptist Church Hall. To find out more contact Dianne on 5494 1265.

Not just tea and scones Contributed by Debbie Ives Members from the Nambour North Coast Division of the CWA descended on the Beerwah CWA Branch for an afternoon tea to celebrate their 93rd year of serving the community, including Peachester and Maleny. Officially taking place on August 11, the 'Not Just Tea and Scones' day gave an opportunity for members to enjoy a delicious feast and birthday cake with other branches within our region. Celebrating 93 years of providing assistance to women and their families, each branch was encouraged to host a special day to mark such a momentous occasion. The QCWA supports a diverse range of projects including the provision of Birthing Kits for women in need throughout the Pacific region, student bursaries to assist ongoing educational needs, and a Public Rural Crisis Fund. Much of the QCWA’s work over the past 20 years has focused on assisting drought-affected and flood-affected women and their families. QCWA members have worked tirelessly on the ground, raising millions of dollars for direct practical assistance, such as providing grocery store vouchers to put food on the table, providing store credit or paying bills.
Members are also encouraged to participate in a number of activities ranging from public speaking, music and drama, to dress making, international study and floral art. New members are always welcome. For more information, visit www.qcwa.org.au

Finance Consultant, Fred Baker has a diversity of experience in a variety of sales orientated industries from motor vehicles to general insurance and now home loans. Fred has received training from some of the most recognisable faces in sales and holds a Diploma in Small Business Management, as well as Mortgage and Finance Broking. He has the ability to successfully deal with complex lending scenarios and is confident that he can provide the right financial solutions to best suit his clients' needs. The Moon Group - Always striving to create effective financial solutions for all of their clients, enabling them to acquire more assets, reduce debt and enjoy a better quality of life and living.
When we first came to The Moon Group we were pretty well high in debt, credit cards were maxed out. We felt like we were working really, really hard and not getting anywhere. We came to The Moon Group, we sat down with Luke and instantly felt like a world of weight had been lifted off our shoulders. We honestly didn’t realise how a few simple little strategies to manage our debts would make life so much easier.
You don’t realise until you sit down with someone that cares, that simply changing the way you do your banking and look at your finances will make everything fall into place. Not only have our debts reduced dramatically in just a few months but our lifestyle has improved massively. We are still on the same income but our debt reduction and ongoing financial management is being looked after by The Moon Group.
The Moon Group are experts in not just getting people home loans; they also educate people on how to manage those loans. Sometimes you know in your head what you want to do, but actually doing it is the hard part. Luke and his team hold your hand the whole way. You can see them, ring them or email them anytime.
We meet Luke once a month and go over everything and make new financial goals every month; it’s super simple. Since we started with Luke we are saving over $2,800 per month in interest, we still pay the same overall amount every month but now $2,800 goes towards paying off our mortgage and reducing our debts further rather than going into the banks’ coffers.
I would recommend anyone wanting to reduce their debts, save money in interest or increase their wealth to contact Luke Mooney and the team at The Moon Group.
Our stress levels are a lot lower these days and we have not only got our finances under control, we are now planning a trip around Australia, something we’ve always wanted to do but could never dream of actually doing. Thankyou The Moon Group.

Maleny Bi-Rite to close at end of month
Last week, Pat and Nerina Kuijpers made the incredibly hard decision to close their Maleny Bi-Rite store at the end of the month. After a long and hard assessment, they could see no other option than to close their doors after eight years of trading. The heartbreaking decision was not taken lightly, as Pat and Nerina know the importance that a strong local business Pat and Nerina at Maleny Bi Rite sector has in a close-knit community such as Maleny. “I’m sure people will understand that the changing face of retail and people’s buying habits means that these days being a ‘bricks and mortar’ business in a small town can be a challenge,” said Pat. “Being a small operator, we ultimately can’t price match the majors who have much bigger buying power than small independents like ours. “We gave it our best for eight long (and sometimes hard) years, and we’ve looked at all our options, but in the end there was no other alternative than to close down.” But Pat says that trading for eight years in Maleny was only possible with the support of locals. “Nerina and I would like to sincerely thank all the locals and customers who have made us feel so welcome in Maleny. “We have certainly made some friends and will miss the many smiling faces who pop in with a bottle of honey or some avocados on the odd occasion.” For the rest of September, Pat and Nerina are having a closing down sale to clear out the floor space. “It will be first in, first served,” said Pat. “I’d like to sell out of as much as possible … otherwise I’ll just be having to store it at home, and you can only use so many toasters.” Come in and grab a bargain while stocks last.
Organic wine month is on again Throughout September, Cellarbrations at Landsborough will be holding their ‘Organic Wine Month’. After the huge success of last year’s promotion, the store will be offering a month long celebration of all things organic with daily wine tastings, company wine representative visits every Friday from 4.00pm to 6.00pm, raffles and weekly giveaways. The popularity of organic wine is rapidly growing and the selection at Cellarbrations Landsborough has nearly doubled since last year, making it one of the largest sellers of organic, preservative free, organic in conversion and biodynamic wines here on the Sunshine Coast. “Our sales have dramatically increased over Julie from Landsborough the last 12 months. Customers are very Cellebrations with some of the impressed with the selection and many Organic Wines on display hadn’t realised how large our range of stock is. We have customers driving in from the Coast and up from Brisbane just for our organic range,” said sales attendant Julie Ryder. Currently, a massive 50 varieties are in the range, with three types of organic sparkling wine including an imported Italian Prosecco, an organic pale ale beer and huge selection of reds and whites with prices ranging from $15.00 to $25.00. Of the range, 12 varieties are preservative free which suits those with sensitivities or allergies. A number of brands are featured including Paxton, Rosnay, Angove (which come with a pack of organic seeds for the month), Gardeners Ground, Bibliotheque and Yalumba. Every bottle of organic wine sold throughout the month will go in the weekly wine prize draw and towards the big monthly hamper prize of organic goodies and wines. www.gcnews.com.au

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network What is the value of a tree? Have you ever pondered the value of a tree? I’m talking about a healthy living tree, not one that has been chopped down for timber or firewood. Trees provide many services, including: • habitat, shelter, nesting sites and food for wildlife, stock and humans; • erosion control, recharge of groundwater and maintenance of stream flows; • temperature reduction through shade and transpiration of water, and modification of wind turbulence; • absorption of pollutants from the air through their leaves, and toxins from stormwater through their roots; • production of oxygen; and • aesthetic values, such as beauty and aromas. But recently, the most debated function of trees may be the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have risen by 25% in the last century. Basically, CO2 controls the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere and thus the size of the greenhouse effect. An acre of trees absorbs enough CO2 over a year to equal that produced by driving a car 42,000 kilometres. Planting trees remains the cheapest, most effective method of removing excess CO2 from the atmosphere. Many researchers have attempted to place a monetary value on trees. A recent local paper estimated the value of a 300 year old tree, on the basis of providing hollows for wildlife alone, as more than $2million. But any actual value is going to be arbitrary. I don’t need a dollar value – I know the exact value of trees – they are priceless. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? School News Book Week - 'Books Light Up our World' Minions on the increase
Glasshouse Christian College Primary students were encouraged to dress as their favourite book character or to express the theme in their costume. As far as costume trends go, this year there was a distinct downturn on Lego men and a huge increase in Minions, with yellow faces and goggles dotted throughout the 450 primary students. Sometimes it seems like the teachers enjoy dressing up more than the students and this time was no exception. Some grades teachers came dressed as a group. Year 2 teachers dressed as three blind mice and Year 4 teachers came in matching pyjamas with oversized shoes as Jessie from the book by Libby Gleeson called, ‘Go to sleep, Jessie!’ Prep staff dressed as characters from a nursing home based on Mem Fox’s book ‘Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge’. All the students looked spectacular but everyone knows the real heroes behind the super hero – and all the other costumes – are the parents. Many of the costumes had been sewn from scratch, cardboard boxes were transformed into magnificent marvels of creativity and there probably isn’t any yellow face paint left on the Sunshine Coast.
Characters come to life
Mooloolah State School students celebrated Book Week in style, dressing up as a multitude of different characters from books or movies that they had read or seen. The school hall was filled with fairytale characters, pirates, witches, wizards, superheroes, villains and animal characters! Students, staff and parents joined the action. The students had so much fun guessing the characters and role playing the star that they had created. It was a difficult job for the judges to choose just two ‘best-dressed’ students from each class. Imagine the look of surprise on the faces of visitors to the school office when they were greeted by the Queen of Hearts, Pocahontas and Minnie Mouse. The Joker was also lurking nearby. The success of the day and the high participation level is a reflection of the reading program that is implemented in the school and the fabulous collection of resources that are held in the library. Students are encouraged to borrow books every week and are developing an amazing love of literature. Book Week is an opportunity to celebrate all the best books that are released each year for younger readers.

Contributed by Deb Ives Every year schools and libraries around Australia spend a week celebrating books – and students from Beerwah State School were no exception. Classroom teachers and students got in on the action by coming dressed as their favourite character from their favourite book. The students' exciting day started out with Acting Deputy-Principal Mrs Mitchell greeting the school assembly with a rendition from Green Eggs and Ham, dressed of course as The Cat in the Hat. The school ran a competition with the following winners: Ruby in Grade 1, Noah in Grade 2, Zacharie in Grade 3, Chloe in Grade 5, Jason in Grade 6, and the Prep class PJ2 winning the class prize. Fun aside, this celebration is to highlight the importance of reading, and encouraging the students to enjoy new books and authors.
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School has just celebrated Book Week with many fun-filled activities including a dressup day where students and teachers came dressed as their favourite book character. There were certainly some fantastic costumes. Other highlights included a visit from Beerwah Library staff who shared books and conducted fun, interactive activities with students. There was also a performance from the children's entertainment group 'The Silly Billies'. Principal Kristy Walton said Book Week was an annual event for the school and was held to celebrate literature. “Book Week helps us celebrate books, authors and illustrators and encourages reading for pleasure,” she said. This year is also 'The Year of Reading' at Landsborough State School, which means there has been a major focus on developing reading skills and students discovering the joy of reading.

Living - Music Music Today
with Dr Michael Whiticker
Musicians, eccentric? Recently I came across the story of a rather peculiar musical act that tickled my fancy and I want to share it with you. Nambour-based songwriter Karen Law has three young children who, like their mum, are talented musicians – all perform as soloists and as part of a family band led by Karen. Along with Karen on guitar, there is Murray on guitar and trumpet, Hazel on guitar, the youngest – 10-year-old Roanna, on flute, and the children’s father David on didjeridoo. Of course they all sing beautifully and make exquisite harmonies together as well. That in itself is newsworthy but not that extraordinary until Karen really caught my attention with her intriguing school holiday plan (or perhaps for those of us not adhering to school timetables, for any two weeks of the year); Karen took her young family on an “open mic marathon”. Read all about it here – karenlawmusic.com/open-mic-marathon. In short, over two weeks they performed at seven different open-mic venues on the Sunshine Coast, culminating in a showing for the Glasshouse Musos in Beerburrum. It was especially exciting for me as I had the honour of mixing the sound for the family on that occasion and I am rather partial to the deep roar of the didjeridoo pumping through the PA along with all these ethereal voices over the top. As Karen said, it was rather magical for her, and I am sure the audience felt it as well. Before beginning her ‘marathon’ Karen performed for the launch of Jamnet – a Facebook page and website aimed at connecting and promoting ‘open mic’ or ‘blackboard’ sessions on the Sunshine Coast. For those of you not up with the terminology, these are music events where artists put their name on a board to give a short bracket (of about 15 minutes). They are a great way for musicians to socialise and sometimes jam (improvise) with likeminded types, but they are also a lot of fun for audiences as the act changes every 15 minutes and the standard is generally high, and even if it wasn’t, there is a variety of styles and age ranges, so the entertainment factor is high. People regularly come along who are committed open-mic groupies – they just love the energy and the friendships. Aah, Musicians, as we all know, although occasionally unconventional, are such nice people! Do have a musical month.
Michael teaches music students from his home studio and runs the Glasshouse Musos' Club. If you would like to find out more contact him on M: 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au
Guitar Ensemble to perform in Maleny
Many people on the Blackall Range will remember Joel Woods from many performances with Mandolins in Brisbane as a performer and conductor together with leading guitarist Ian Ahles. On Sunday, September 13 he will be returning to Maleny as the leader of the Riverside Guitar Ensemble. Joel is an experienced classical guitarist with rave reviews both overseas and in Australia and he has been the inspiration (with encouragement from Ian Ahles) for this very talented group of musicians. Their 2015 concert program features a range of composers from Vivaldi to Domeniconi and a world premiere performance of ‘A Night in the Gardens’ by local Brisbane composer Ryan Joel Brown. The ensemble are currently receiving coaching from internationallyrenowned guitarist Karin Schaupp, and are very keen to perform this year’s program. The repertoire performed includes modern and traditional music, the exciting and the beautiful, all performed by an enthusiastic ensemble with a sense of fun. This concert will be held at St George’s Anglican Church, 2 Walker Drive, Maleny at 2.00pm. Admission is $15.00, students $10.00 and children under 12 years of age free. Parking is available in the grounds and street. Patrons are invited to meet the musicians over afternoon tea following the concert.
Glenview sings up a storm! Glenview State School’s two school choirs (Junior and Senior) recently travelled to Talara State College for the statewide ‘Choralfest’ competition. The students were surprised to find they were singing in front of a 400 strong crowd after only ever singing at their own local assemblies. Mrs Chelsea Harry said, "Glenview State School has reason to boast with over half of the school either learning an instrument or involved in the two school choirs." It is a labour of love for Chelsea who has been teaching there for more than four years, increasing the music program to include Wind, Brass, Percussion, Strings, Piano and Guitar tuition, with six private music teachers. The Junior Choir sang the Louis Armstrong classic 'What a wonderful world' and were commended for their sweet tone and confident singing. They followed it with 'Supercalifragilistic ...' which was met with rapturous applause. The Senior Choir sang the short, sharp and impressive ‘Drunken Sailor’ Sea Shanty, followed by the Michael Jackson crowd pleaser, 'Man in the Mirror’ with soloists Decklan Curtis and Maizie Venton. At the close of the competition the adjudicators awarded a Gold Award for the Junior Choir and a Bronze Award for the Senior Choir.
Concert Band for beginners
Buderim Concert Band are setting up a Beginners Band Program for the many people who have access to an instrument from their kids’ school days or have been given one from a friend or relative and it is just sitting in a cupboard. Program Coordinator Myron Cheney said they aim to give these people an opportunity to learn in a fun and friendly environment. “No previous experience is necessary as people will be taught how to read music and to play their chosen instrument within a group environment with other beginners,’’ Myron said. “Or people who used to play years ago and want to get back into it or want to learn a second instrument will find this program is an excellent bridge to do that.” Instruments offered are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium (baby tuba), tuba, bass guitar and percussion (drums, glockenspiel, timpani, etc). The program is for people of all ages who do not have access to any other music program. People will need to have their own instrument or access to an instrument (some percussion instruments are available from band) and their own music stand for home practice and rehearsal. What is supplied is weekly tuition in a friendly group setting, music books and sheet music, and automatic association membership in the Buderim Concert Band Inc. Depending on sufficient numbers, an information evening will be held for interested people. More information is available on the band’s website. Interested people should register online at www.buderimconcertband.com, click on Beginners Registration at the top right of the page and complete the no obligation online registration form, or email beginners@buderimconcertband.com The band is also seeking experienced musicians. Further information regarding vacancies is also available on the website. Band President James Moir and Beginners Coordinator Myron Cheney

Turn good posture into less back pain with Braxton Turnage Most of us get back pain at some point in our lives. It may be due to a sports-related injury, an accident, or a congenital condition such as scoliosis. But most of the time, upper or lower back pain develops during the course of day-to-day life, through repetitive activities at work or home. For preventing these problems general physical fitness and a healthy weight are important, so is paying attention to your posture. If your posture is good, the bones of the spine — the vertebrae — are correctly aligned. However you can improve your posture — and head off

back pain — by practicing some imagery and a few easy exercises. Imagery - think of a straight line passing through your body from ceiling to floor (your ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles should be even and line up vertically). Now imagine that a strong cord attached to your breastbone is pulling your chest and rib cage upward, making you taller. Try to hold your pelvis level — don't allow the lower back to sway. Think of stretching your head toward the ceiling, increasing the space between your rib cage and pelvis. Picture yourself as a ballerina or ice skater rather than a soldier at attention. shoulders down and your chin level. Slowly draw your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of five; relax. Then repeat three or four times. Arm-across-chest stretch - raise your right arm to shoulder level in front of you and bend the arm at the elbow, keeping the forearm parallel to the floor. Grasp the right elbow with your left hand and gently pull it across your chest so that you feel a stretch in the upper arm and shoulder on the right side. Hold for 20 seconds; relax both arms. Repeat to the other side. Repeat three times on each side. Practice these imagery and posture exercises throughout the day.

Great eats and treats to find locally!
Vianta has plenty of breakfast delights For this month’s write up, Lea and I decided to sample Vianta’s breakfast menu and there were plenty of options to choose from. We chose an outside table and it is nice to be part of the bustling street vibe with people walking past and saying hello, giving us a wave, which is the great part about living in a small community. Lea went with the eggs Benedict ($11.90) – poached eggs on English muffins with shaved ham, mixed greens and hollandaise sauce, and I ordered a vegetarian breakfast ($10.90) with my choice of bread, two eggs, tomato, mushrooms, fetta, avocado and mixed greens. The prices at Vianta are very reasonable and you can get a big breakfast with a well-made Sunshine Coast roasted coffee for around $15.00.
Vianta is a great place to meet others for breakfast as they offer something for every appetite. If you don’t want to totally indulge there is a good choice of lighter options such as scrambled eggs on toast or a breakfast wrap. There are also well-priced items such as kid friendly thick cut raisin toast for $2.50 and toasted crumpets served with honey, jam or vegemite for $2.90. Our meals were tasty and, as always, served by the friendly international staff. I enjoyed the fetta stuffed mushrooms and there was heaps of avocado and toast so my meal left me feeling full and satisfied. Lea enjoyed the eggs and found the hollandaise
thick and creamy – though unlike myself who smothers my food in rich sauces like hollandaise, was restrained and had it on the side to allow the taste of the ham and baby spinach to come through. If you are meeting someone for a special occasion, another nice touch is that Vianta sell fresh flowers so you can look super prepared and buy a beautiful bouquet before they arrive. Each month Vianta also features a new exhibition and this Friday there will be an opening night event for the new Annie McIntosh exhibition. For more details see our story on page 30. Vianta is open Monday through to Saturday 7.00am to 6.00pm and Sunday from 7.00am to 5.00pm.

If you ask Annie, she will probably tell you that she thinks that her alternative perspective on the visual world stems from the time she spent working as a laboratory technologist, dyeing cell cultures in blues, reds, yellows, and mauves. She also dabbled in photography developing the photographs in an oldfashioned laboratory darkroom. Annie creates large landscapes of the mind. Her works, sometimes whimsical, sometimes enigmatic, other times even foreboding or darkly obscure, always challenge the imagination, taking it to places maybe long forgotten or possibly never previously visited. The works on display tease the emotions, ranging across the ominous and pregnant ‘Moody Blues’, lifting optimistically to the flamboyantly joyous ‘Spring’, and then on to the realm of barely remembered childhood imagery in ‘Wee Beastie’. ‘Pink Bark’ actually does reflect the micro-landscapes that Annie lived in for so many years at the other end of a microscope. The Exhibition ‘Reality... Leaves a Lot to the Imagination’ will hang at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, until September 26, following the opening on September 4. The café will be serving an a la carte menu. For reservations call Vianta at 0412 312 399.
Auditions for ‘Cinderella – the Untold Story’, the 2015 Christmas pantomime being presented by the Maleny Players, are to be held on Sunday, September 13 from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. The panto is a highlight of the year for the Players, and will be performed at the Maleny Community Centre on the weekends of December 12 and 20. Playwright David Crewe had a ball Pumpkin scoop: Characters get working on the script. “It’s classic family in on the act as David Crewe entertainment, featuring outlandish writes ‘Cinderella – the Untold costumes and plenty of audience Story’ participation,’’ he said. “All the usual characters of the traditional fairytale will be present – the prince, the wicked stepmother and her ugly daughters – along with a host of others. “They fight for a role in my mind while I’m writing,” Mr Crewe confided. “Usually the ones who come up with the best jokes win.” This will be Mr Crewe’s sixth pantomime, and it fills in some of the plot gaps left by 2010’s ‘Cinderella – The Sequel’. The Players welcome new members who are interested in taking part. The auditions will be held in the Playhouse Theatre, Maleny Showground. Performers must be paid-up members of the troupe: $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for students to take part. See www.malenyplayers.org for details.
Learn about Peace, Power and You The Women’s Social Group is to welcome back Annemarie De Seriere author of ‘Will To Wonder’, on Wednesday, September 9 at 12.30pm to talk about her newest book ‘Peace, Power and You’. The book is all about overcoming anger, anxiety and depression, conquering stress, tension, fear … and the 'impostor syndrome' and triumphing over pain, with peace, power and persistence! ‘Peace, Power and You’ shares practical tools, simple concepts and achievable exercises. It’s a spiritual ABC that’s authentic, aware and powerful. The group meet at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre at Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains opposite the Post Office. Please bring a plate to share plus a $2.00 donation.
Tangerines in Maleny This Saturday’s film from the Maleny Film Society in the Maleny Community Centre (with heating when needed, bar, tea and coffee stand and dining catering by Wild Rocket @ Mistys) is the Estonian production ‘Tangerines’, the first film from that country to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in the Oscars. It was directed by Zaza Urushadze. Carpenter Ivo stays through neighbourhood conflicts and invading Chechen mercenaries to help harvest the crop of tangerines for his neighbour Margus. Both belong to a rural community of refugees from Estonia, caught up in warfare between ex-Russian territories Georgia and Abkhazia. Ivo’s steadfast strength is the winner in political struggles and personal conflicts against the backdrop of a pastoral setting and the ripe fruit needed for survival. Dinner is from 6.00pm and the film screens at 7.15pm. To find out more check out www.malenyfilmsociety.info

Health practitioner and author Ben Nowland will launch his new book 'Playing GOD: Biological and Spiritual Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation' at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Thursday, September 10 from 5.30pm. After the launch, guests can all share in a healthy Ayuvedic meal prepared by Billy's Ayuvedic Kitchen. Entry to the launch is by donation and the Ayuvedic meal is $10.00 with a main and sweets. After a move to inner city Sydney in 2013, Benjamin Nowland was disabled by radiation pollution sickness (electromagnetic hypersensitivity: EHS). He became a radiation refugee, unable to fly, live in a city or town, work in an office or visit the library. Ben wrote the book for the general reader and is keen to share his knowledge of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and health with every Australian – even those not yet experiencing evident symptoms. In the book he shares his insights, correlations, research and a path back to health. “You do not need to be a scientist to understand and internalise why microwaves generate disharmony and illness,” Ben said. “I'd like you to gain the knowledge required to take individual, family and societal action.” For more information contact Richard Giles on 5435 0158 or Jim Straker on 5494 3229.
Welcome to Wittafest About eight kilometres outside Maleny is the picturesque hinterland village known today as Witta. Come and discover a hinterland gem and find out how it started. With its rapidly changing landscape and mobile population, ‘Wittafest’ is about bringing people together, connecting through stories, music, games, food, drink and crafts – all inspired by the unique historical context. For this inaugural and free event, we are discovering ‘Teutoburg up to 1900’. Activities and displays will focus on the early years of selection, survey and settlement. During this period Witta was called Teutoburg (and if you want to know more, it will all be there on the day), a township established by Lutheran pioneering families. The organisers of this new event have been busy collecting survey plans, historical photographs and local stories, to help today’s residents appreciate what life was like in Witta back then. Wittafest encompasses an array of activities, including tours of the cemetery, the old school and church and a re-vegetation walk of Bergann’s Lane. There will be a candle making workshop, a cheese and butter making demonstration and an opportunity to dress up 19th Century style. It could not be complete without German beer history (and tasting!), storytelling, some great music, gourmet foods, costume and historical displays – and kids’ games from yesteryear. It definitely promises to be a fun family day, especially enjoying the kids wrapping their energies around sack, egg and spoon and three-legged races! Witta Recreation Club and local heritage specialist Timeline Heritage are partners in developing and delivering this community initiative. Profits raised will be put towards the ongoing operational costs of the Witta Recreation Club. You can visit www.wittafest.org online for more information. Please join us on September 19, 10.00am till sunset, to make it an inspirational day for the whole community.

You Said It NBN Towers … grrrrrr
I'm becoming heartily sick of reading about the NBN towers. As someone who has worked in the telecommunications industry, I can appreciate the issues more than most. However the comments I read seem more about generating heat than light. Please allow me to make a few simple points: 1. Fibre would be better but we, the people of Australia, indirectly voted for a notionally cheaper system. So, if any group of people want the better system, they should put up the funds themselves. 2. The radiation from the towers is much like the light from a lighthouse – by far the most energy passes overhead until you are several kilometres away by which time the energy at any one point has dropped below any harmful level. 3. Far more potential danger comes from having a digital mobile phone next to your ear. This is simply because a much, much larger amount of energy is passing through your head. Similarly, WiFi could also be a concern because it is close to you – in your computer or router. 4. I was disappointed with the answer I got from the NBN people at the Maleny public meeting. I asked what other possible mechanisms had been investigated as a potential source of health concerns. While their answers focused on the absolute amount of energy passing through you, no mention was, for example, made of the possibility that digital modulation may be causing occasional electrical field strengths at molecular level which might allow ionisation, either on its own or in conjunction with aggregate radiation levels from all sources. 5. It should be clear that, unless a mechanism is identified which can cause health effects, no amount of statistical or anecdotal data will make a solid case for rejecting radio tower NBN. 6. It is the case, however, that the NBN towers could be camouflaged to reduce their aesthetic impact. K.Tietze Maleny

Re the new entrance to Turner Park from Turner Street in Beerwah that has just been completed – why is there no provision for wheelchair access to this entrance? Or for that matter, for mums with prams, the elderly, and people who have difficulty with stairs etc. I couldn't believe in this day and age that a council project such as this would be constructed without a ramp access. And on the same subject in respect of the newly opened part of Beerwah Village – why did council allow the developer to provide only ‘token’ handicapped parking? The spaces are the same size as normal car parks with just the benefit of a handicapped designation. This is totally inadequate to deal with the needs of people with wheelchairs or even walkers. When is the council going to commit to ensuring that all projects under its control meet the requirements to provide adequate access for the handicapped as well as the able bodied? It doesn't require a Disabled Access Consultant for every project, just planners and designers who are capable of implementing the various Australian Standards. Peter Wilson Peachester 32

Thanks for a great Charity Sports Day
Save our environment
I would like to sincerely thank the entire organising committee of the Beerwah Charity Sports Day for their amazing efforts again this year in running a very enjoyable day. Without them volunteering their time, we wouldn’t be able to raise the much needed funds for the Queensland Cancer Council. Again this year I was very happy to grow lettuces and silverbeet to be sold on the produce stall – and I thank everyone who bought them. Helping me each year to get the produce ready are Helen and Bruce Page and Jan and Graeme Cheal. I really do appreciate the help that they give me and without them I would battle to get things ready each year. And thanks to the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for putting Jan Cheal on the front page with that other bloke – he wasn’t as good looking as Jan. As well as the Rumbalar Nursery at Glass House Mountains for supplying my seedlings. Lastly, I was honoured to receive a certificate of appreciation from the Cancer Council, presented to me at the Charity Sports Day by Mal Brough, our Federal Member. I was truly humbled by the recognition, as I just grow some vegetables each year and it’s the wonderful organising committee that really make it all happen. See you all at next year’s Beerwah Charity Sports Day. Jack Kropp Beerwah

Everyday politicians are talking about the changes we need to make to help the environment, however not many practical solutions are being suggested and little is being done to combat the current issues. Generating and using electricity causes up to 50% of the total pollution in Australia. 50% of our electricity is used heating and cooling buildings. This means that heating and cooling causes about 25% of Australia’s total pollution. The government has suggested that we maintain the temperature in our house at precisely 24 degrees Celsius, but if we allow the temperature to fluctuate between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius we can save up to 40% of the energy used for heating and cooling. This slight flexibility in the thermostat would save up to 20% of the total electricity used in Australia and 10% of Australia’s pollution. This solution costs nothing and saves money. Gold Award for New Mary Grigor Centre
2015 Caloundra Health Forum date claimer
You may not even be aware of it yet but the recently opened Mary Grigor Centre, an archival and interpretive centre located within the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct at Glass House Mountains, received a Gold Award in the prestigious National Trust Queensland Heritage Awards. The award was given for (take a breath) being an example of best practice in planning excellence and innovation in conservation of a museum quality archival collection. Which just means it’s really well designed for its purpose. It is wonderful to have this unique new centre in our backyard and I would encourage you to put a visit on your to do list this coming summer. Bankfoot House is open the last Sunday of each month, 10.00am to 3.00pm.
Join me and the Australian Pensioner Superannuants League Caloundra (APSL) on Friday, September 25 for the 2015 Health Forum, which will focus on Diabetes and Prostate Cancer. As Shadow Minister for Health I am concerned about the short and long term impacts disease and poor health have on our community. Sufferers and their families and friends require a tremendous amount of support that extends far beyond front line treatments and an initial diagnosis. Media cycles tend to dictate when and for how long topical issues, particularly health issues, stay on our agenda and top of mind. I believe that we as a community have to keep engaging with those who are struggling. We need to keep abreast of the latest research and treatment paradigms. We need to keep searching for better ways and for better health outcomes. I encourage people who may be facing challenges with diabetes management or with prostate cancer to come along and hear from experts in both fields and enjoy morning tea and raffles. There is a certain fellowship that comes from a forum such as this, and sometimes just to know that you are not alone, and that there is hope, is a big help. A gold coin donation will be shared by Diabetes Queensland and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. When: Friday, September 25 Time: 9:00am to 11:30am Where: CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street, Caloundra RSVP: Office of Mark McArdle 5329 4100, caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au by Tuesday, September 22.
Art Prize finalists on display The prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize, now in its 10th year, is showing some of the nation’s best contemporary and emerging artists. When you’re next in Caloundra, I urge you to take the opportunity to pop in and view the works of the 40 finalists in the Two Dimensional exhibition at your Regional Gallery (next to the library) from August 20 to October 11.
How safe is your pool or spa? It’s now time for the 34,000 plus swimming pool owners across the Sunshine Coast to ensure their pool or spa meets the State’s new pool safety laws. Prevention of drownings and accidents – especially in the under five age group – is the major impetus behind the new pool fencing rules. Compliant pool fencing obviously helps reduce these incidents and provides better peace of mind for pool and spa owners. From November 30, 2015, all swimming pools in Queensland must be registered with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). Once registered, pool owners should check the pool safety guidelines on the QBCC website or follow the links from Council’s website to be sure their pool or spa barriers comply. Please ensure your pool and/or spa is ready for a happy and safe summer.

In the Garden with Brownie
Happy National Wattle Day OK, hand’s up – who’s old enough to remember singing the Wattle Day song at primary school? The bush was grey a week ago Olive green and brown and grey, But now the Spring has come this way With blossom for the wattle. I loved Wattle Day when I was a kid. I’d pick big bunches of wattle from the horse paddock up on the hill and take them into school for my teacher to put on show. Problem was, one of my best mates was violently allergic to wattle pollen and was usually taken off to hospital. It seems to be a fairy tree It dances to a melody, and sings a little song to me, the graceful swaying wattle Not long before Federation, the wattle was being put up as a symbol of Australian nationalism. Wattle societies and leagues formed in various states before the Wattle Club was established in Melbourne in 1899. They mooted the idea of a national Wattle Day in 1908. Not to be outdone, Sydney started a Wattle Day League, advocating that a day should be set aside where everyone across the country was encouraged to wear some wattle. The first Wattle Day was celebrated in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide on September 1, 1910. The day included planting wattle trees, school lessons on botany, street decorations using wattle (of course) and selling wattle sprigs for charity. See how it weaves its feathery sheaves Before the wind a maze it weaves A misty whirl of powdery leaves The dainty curtseying wattle As public awareness and interest grew, the idea to celebrate wattle spread across the rest of Australia. Wattle was then added to the Commonwealth coat of arms and the first wattle stamp was issued in 1913. World War One broke out just as the public support for Wattle Day reached its peak, meaning that wattle became a potent symbol for the troops serving overseas.
Phone: 5439 0999
Wattle Day continued to be celebrated in the 1920s and 30s, mainly in schools. And New South Wales decided to change the date for their Wattle Day to be August 1, as the wattle around Sydney bloomed more in August than September. After the Second World War, Wattle Day began to die as a national symbol of pride. It may have had something to do with the fact that gum leaves replaced the wattle as the Diggers preferred symbol of home. Its boughs uplift, an elfin gift A spray of yellow downy drift Through which the sun beams shine and sift Their gold dust o’er the wattle Wattle Day was given a boost when the green and gold colours of wattle were proclaimed our national colours in 1984. It wasn’t until 1992 that the Commonwealth and the States agreed that Wattle Day should indeed be celebrated on the first day of Spring – September 1. Did you know: • There are about 930 different wattles in Australia, forming the Acacia genus of native plants. • 98% of these wattles are found nowhere else on earth except for Australia. • Most are shrubs or trees, but two species in northern Queensland are vines. • Most are short lived, but the Myall Wattle is known to live to about 250 years. • Most wattles flower in Winter or Autumn – few actually flower in Spring. Wattle is uniquely Australian, and a symbol of national pride and the Australian spirit. Get out there this week and wear some wattle or plant one in your garden. It seems to be a fairy tree It dances to a melody, and sings a little song to me, the graceful swaying wattle.

Callitris rhomboidea A hardy, graceful columnar tree with midgreen ‘Cypress-like’ foliage that turns purplish brown in cold weather. It produces clusters of woody cones that can stay on the tree for many years. It makes an excellent lawn specimen, as it reacts well to trimming, and so it can therefore make a good hedge – often used around pools for privacy. Plant three to four metres apart. If not trimmed it will become a conical pyramid shape in old age. It will adapt to any soil type due to a fibrous root system – even extremely sandy soils – providing that there is moisture available to the roots. In summer, mulch and keep up the water in dry conditions. Give it a feed of slow release fertiliser – preferably the native formulations - in spring.

Time-In vs Timing I do not pretend to know the complexities associated with investments and the stock exchange, but I do remember some advice given to me many years ago. The advice I received was simply this: “It’s about Time-in not Timing.” There is great wisdom in this advice. How many times do we pin all our hopes on the significance of one moment? The moment of perfect timing. This opportunistic outlook can leave us feeling inadequate, luckless, even not good enough. Life isn’t about getting the planets to align, waiting for our ship to come in, it’s about living in the moment. Being present in the moment is where we grow. There are few times in life where you happen to be in the right place at the right time, and these moments can bring much joy. I believe greater joy is found through consistently turning up, being reliable, and being in the moment. As a father of five young children, I am realising more than ever the importance of ‘time-in’ with my relationship with each of them.

It requires something from me to make this happen and the rewards are countless. Equally my relationship with God is very similar. In my early years as a Christian my faith was based on ‘timing’, meaning I would only ever come to God, go to Church when I had a need. I’ve since learnt the blessing of being with God and conscious of God more and more. God in His Word tells us He will never leave or forsake us. He is committed to ‘time-in’. God is not mad at you, He is mad about you, slow to anger, quick to forgive. And God is for us even when we aren’t for ourselves. Let’s not live hit and miss lives based on ‘timing’ but, through a ‘time-in’ attitude, place value upon others and God through a consistent relationship. May all your relationships be examples of ‘time-in’ rather than ‘timing’. Having a ‘time-in’ mindset is so much more rewarding over the longevity of life and takes our connections from relationship to ‘REALationship’.

Just for Laughs Truth be told
Help, help!
A man buys a lie detector robot that slaps people who lie. He decides to test it at dinner. Dad: “Son, where were you today during school hours?” Son: “At school.” The robot slaps the son. Son: “Ok! I watched a DVD at my mates.” Dad: “Which one?” Son: “Fast and Furious.” The robot slaps the son again. Son: “Ok ok! It was an ‘adult movie’.” Dad: “WHAT?! When I was your age I didn’t even know what that was!” The robot slaps the dad. Mum: “Hahahhahahaha after all he’s your son.” The robot slaps the mum... Submitted by Shane Old, Glass House Mountains
An elderly lady called the police on her mobile phone to report that her car has been broken into. She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher: “They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the accelerator!” she cried. The dispatcher said, “Stay calm. An officer is on the way.” A few minutes later, the officer radios in. “Disregard,” he says. “She got in the back-seat by mistake.” Submitted by Kevin, Elimbah
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 02/09/2015
VIRGO August 23 - September 22 The emphasis is strongly in your first sector which shows success through leadership and drive. When putting your best foot forward just make decisions based on facts rather than hearsay. There is resolution to a secret in your life. You improve situations for yourself. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 With the Sun sign moving into Virgo and a new Moon solar eclipse in that sign mid month, there is a lot happening behind the scenes, out of the public eye. So this first week is a time when you benefit from rest, reflective solitude, introspection, and meditation. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 There is a huge conjunction of planets that signal great development in your life, possibly linked to events that started in February. Uranus is working with Mars and Venus which could bring exciting surprising developments that open up new opportunities. SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 It should be a lucky month for you now with the potent ardent pair of Venus and Mars moving through your sector of promotion, publishing, travel and media relations! You can expect lots of praise and recognition, particularly for successful projects.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21 Last week was the ability to be self-reflective. This week the Moon is happy to be in your sign, consequently you should be feeling good about yourself. Your ruling planet, Venus, now turns direct, so you can put family relations on a more harmonious footing now. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Happy tones begin this month with Mars and Venus in Leo, entangled in a heated romantic embrace. After the 6th, stalled matters of love, or unspoken feelings could straighten out. A friend who has been waiting for you arrives. Social outings at the weekend. CANCER June 22 - July 22 The month starts with expansive trends and there may be advice or a tip that can be lucky. Wonderful feelings with the pleasures of travel and good company puts you on a high note. The weekend sees decisions and changes at your disposal with ambitions to push forward. LEO July 23 - August 22 Venus with Mars in your sign arouses extraordinary passion and romantic energy! This the energy made for a close knit travelling companion. This excitement flows through to the 22nd. There might be a lot of activity in your social circle. Progress with your career.

This first week is time to make progress with a heart interest or creative pursuit. Your chart reflects not only romantic love but the possibility of bringing children into the world. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This month the first eclipse is a new Moon in Virgo on the 13th. All eclipses indicate taking a good look at your potentials in revamping old and present routines. Any feelings of ambivalence are easily replaced with conviction and making commitments now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 There are two eclipses this month and they will influence all your partnerships, teamwork in a marriage, public relations, competitors and giving out great advice. Someone may enter your life to help you connect to your most cherished hopes and wishes. ARIES March 21- April 20 Just after the full Moon in Pisces, this week starts on a very affectionate Venus/Mars conjunction in Leo in your sector of love and romance! This is giving and receiving gold presents, or maybe it’s time for a new baby. Dress in your best formal wear for ‘city’ nights out.
