Hi Everyone Well already it’s February and 2011 is definitely underway, and for those households with children things should be just about returning to normal. As our GCNews team has quite a few mums who had kids starting new schools, starting Prep or high school last week – I see that ‘back to school’ can be a very stressful time, maybe not for the kids but definitely for the parents. And it would seem that sometimes there were more tears from the mums than the little ones.

Good thing dad was on-hand to move things along and give mum a chance to gain her composure without the brave Preppie seeing his mum’s tears. The great thing about Prep kids is they are happy to tell you what they think – so when our writer Rosemary went out to Beerwah and Mooloolah State School’s last week she got plenty of positive comments from these little students, you can see what they have to say on page 4 and 5. Regards,

I did hear one lovely story about a new Prep mum who as she took the final steps to her little boy’s Prep classroom on day one, was doing a great job holding it all together, until the little fella looked up at her and kindly said mum “I’ll be ok – don’t be sad.”

Those recognised include Beerwah’s Andrew Perryman and Mary Southern of Beerwah, Eileen Schafer of Glass House Mountains, and Peachester’s Trevor Taylor. Former Beerwah High school captain Andrew Perryman was recognised with the prestigious ‘Fisher Young Citizen of the Year’ award for his exemplary service to Beerwah High School and the Beerwah community. “Andrew is an inspiring leader and role model who has served his fellow students and community diligently, and has gained the enormous respect of his teachers, schoolmates and fellow citizens,” Mr Slipper said. He was school captain, and has been involved in the school’s ‘Project 4519’, which planned and executed several initiatives, and helped organise various events, including a lunchtime ‘dodge ball’ tournament, a ‘Beerwah’s Got Talent’ competition, and a ‘Clean Up Beerwah’ afternoon, which involved some 45 students. He has also participated in Clean Up Australia Day, Land for Wildlife, the Community Trivia night, as well as the University of Queensland Science Ambassador program and the Duke of Edinburgh award. Eileen Schafer was awarded for service to the environment and the Glasshouse community,

Leaping into learning Across the state, an estimated 60,000 Prep students got their first taste of ‘big school’ last week, donning their uniforms, shoes and hats for the start of the school year. Locally, we headed off to Beerwah State School and Mooloolah State School to find out how our youngest students were enjoying their first week.

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY BOWLS Commences Friday 4th February Jade and Lara

Eleanor and Kieran

First day of Prep at Glasshouse Country Christian College had the teachers seeing double with two sets of twins turning up for their first day of school. The first set of twins to arrive was Jade and Lara – identical twin girls. Their mother, Annoeska, said the girls had been looking forward to going to school since they first brought their uniforms home. “They have been trying their uniforms on every day and keep filling their backpacks with what they think they will need for school,” she said. The twins’ teacher, Tanya Lindsay, said that she and the other teachers should be able to tell the girls apart because Jade wears green hair clips and Lara wears maroon. “The only problem will be if one day the girls learn what drama they can create by switching hair clips, but by then we will know their personalities really well,” she said. The second set of twins are not identical but certainly have the same beautiful eyes. Brother and sister Eleanor and Kieran Robertson have been attending Kindy so they are coping really well with their first day of school. Caroline Robertson, their mother, was happy to see them settle in so well so she could get back home to her toddler and baby.

Glasshouse Hall heroes Contributed by Elaine Reeves

The work continues on the renovation and refurbishment of the Glasshouse Hall. On a Saturday in early January a hard-working team of volunteers from the PraiseHouse church group, led by Hall chairman John Winterhoff, tackled the big job of removing the stage.

Volunteers from PraiseHouse church take a breather during renovations at the Glass House Mountains Hall This was a mammoth task, completed efficiently by the church men early in the afternoon. During this process, the old original stage (which had been covered by the existing stage) was revealed. It certainly looked quite small by today’s standards! The planned relocation of the stage to the opposite end of the Hall will give a more efficient space for dances and functions, and the old entrance to the Hall will be retained as access to the back of the proposed new stage. A couple of days later the old dance floor was removed, in preparation for the laying of a new floor to complement the floor laid last year in the new extension. However, an area of the original crows ash timber flooring from the original 1916 building still exists and has been preserved underneath the new stage. The new floor has now been completed and the new stage has been erected at the opposite end of the Hall. There is still work to be done but the Hall committee are looking forward to showing off the new work at their next dance on February 5. The Hall Committee would like to thank the PraiseHouse Church for all their efforts on behalf of the Hall – your hard work is much appreciated.

‘Best ever’ Australia Day for Landsborough family As the nation stopped to celebrate our national day last week, you probably couldn’t have found a more jubilant home than that of Des Holmquest and his family. Instead of the more traditional celebrations involving the beach and barbeque, Des, from Landsborough, was celebrating the news of the donation of a life-saving insulin pump for his daughter in law, Amanda. Since giving birth to her first son five months ago, Amanda, a diabetic, has spent more time in hospital than out, and was in desperate need for the insulin pump, but at $8,000.00, it was well out of the family’s reach. Thanks to the goodwill of pharmaceutical giant Roach, who heard about her family’s plight, Amanda has been able to celebrate Australia Day with the gift of life.

Des and Dorothy with grandson Jaxon had their best Australia Day ever last week after hearing the news of the donation of a life saving insulation pump for daughter in law Amanda

cont. from page 3 “She is living proof that there is always something that can be done to make our community better, and all of us are able to make a contribution.” Mrs Mary Southern was recognised for her service to war widows through Legacy, having been deeply involved through the organisation’s Glasshouse Country Laurel Club for more than eight years, and holding the position of president for almost six years. In that time she has assisted and supported countless war widows who have suddenly found themselves alone without their husbands; she makes a big effort and sacrifices much of her time for others. Trevor Taylor was recognised with a Fisher Community Australia Day Award for services to the hinterland community through various organisations and initiatives. “Trevor is incredibly passionate about his community and works to make things better in many unique ways – both as a member of several local organisations and as an individual,” Mr Slipper said. “He is heavily involved in the Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club, where he has coordinated a number of community initiatives, including a trip to Papua New Guinea in 2000 to help re-build villages destroyed in a tsunami.” “He also helped push a campaign to raise $4,100 in three days for the Victorian bushfire appeal two years ago, organised the Rotary Golf Day to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, and he visits the Solomon Islands twice annually to help local villagers build buildings and source clean drinking water.” Mr Taylor has also organised a mental health forum locally, assisted with funds for the Peachester Historical Society, and helped get some new park benches and a chicken coop for the residents of Eden Retirement Village. More recently, he has coordinated the Rotary club’s fundraising for flood victims, in a district stretching from Gympie to Kingaroy and down to Brisbane. “Trevor Taylor has his hand in many Peachester projects, all done with great success, and has made the township a much better place to live,” Mr Slipper said. The local residents were among 26 voluntary community workers and groups who were recognised for their efforts by Mr Slipper and the ‘Fisher Australia Day Committee’ at the 12th annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards. “These dedicated and hard-working residents don’t seek recognition for what they do, but Australia Day gives us an opportunity to say thanks publicly and to let them know that we do recognise their contributions, which are very much appreciated,” Mr Slipper said.

Spilt Milk in Mundubbera Everyone’s first reaction to the devastating Queensland floods is ‘what can we do to help?’ This was asked by Glasshouse Country Baptist Church (GCBC) in Beerwah. The church was quickly put in touch with Mundubbera Baptist, four hours north-west. Mundubbera was one of the first towns flooded back on December 28. Before the tragedies of Toowoomba, Grantham and Brisbane, the people of Mundubbera were suffering through their worst flood since 1942 with the river peaking at 18.75m. Most of the muddy clean up was over but the local pastor said the town was exhausted and demoralised; in need of encouragement and cheering up. With only two weeks to pull something together, the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church came up with an idea for a free town festival called ‘Music after the Mud’ and gathered a volunteer team of 45 people from the church. Locals were entertained by the GCBC band called Spilt Milk, a 10 piece jazz and blues group which played at the Mundubbera Community Hall Saturday night. GCBC, in conjunction with Mundubbera Baptist Church, also treated the town to a free sausage sizzle, gourmet coffee, slushies and face painting on the night. Councillor Faye Whelan said how much the town enjoyed the night. “It is ironic that the music group is named Spilt Milk because many of our dairy farmers had to pour their milk down the drain because they were cut off for so long. One farmer lost 16,000 litres of milk,” she added. The night was a time to forget about the mud and enjoy the music and fun.

Local raffle generates strong interest

If you haven’t already, there’s still time to contribute to the flood relief appeal, and at the same time, go into the draw to win a fantastic collectors prize of an award winning doll or bear. There are 13 award winning dolls and bears up for grabs in the raffle, being hosted by a number of local businesses. Each business is raffling off a different doll or bear, so make sure you check them all out and pick your favourite! Those businesses participating include Eclectic Dreams in Landsborough, Janti Hair Studio in Landsborough, Soul Pattinson Chemist, Beerwah, the Mooloolah Chemist, IGA in Beerwah, Glasshouse Mountains and Landsborough, and the Beerwah Library. The raffle will be drawn at the end of this week, on Friday, February 4, so don’t delay, get in and get your tickets today!

Calling all mentors

By Mike Turner (Beerwah High Chaplain)

Beerwah High School has had a successful Mentoring Program for students since September 2007. We have a great team of local volunteers from a range of ages and backgrounds, who donate an hour of their time each week to invest in a young person’s life as a positive role model. The program is fully supervised each week by a school staff member. It became apparent quite early on in the piece that being a mentor is a very positive experience. Four of our current mentors have been with us since 2007 which I think is evidence that they have found it rewarding. Many of the mentors comment to me that they also enjoy the social interaction with the other mentors that they have each week. Each potential mentor who applies to be a part of this program attends a training session and has an interview with two school staff. They also require a current ‘Working with Children’ blue card. They are not there to be counsellors but are there to provide students with an extra resource to help them with school and life in general and inspiration for their future, goalsetting, careers etc. If you are interested in being a mentor or would like to know more you can contact Mike Turner at the school on 5436 5333.

Keep an eye out in next week’s edition, when we catch up with one of the local mentors, the manager of Suncorp Metway Beerwah, Tracey Cremins, who will give us some insight into the role of a mentor.

The recent flooding in South East Queensland has caused a one-week delay in sending out Sunshine Coast Council rates notices. But that does not mean ratepayers will miss out on their usual discount period for payment. To compensate for the late delivery, council has extended the due date by one week. This means you now have until Friday, February 25 to pay your rates and still get a discount for prompt payment. So, ignore the due date on your rates notice and mark in the new due date of Friday, February 25. If you need more information, contact Sunshine Coast Council, phone 5475 7542, email rates@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, or website http://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/. Need some help to declare your love on Valentines Day? Here’s some quotes that might help you out. But take warning, use them at your own risk! Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius. - Mozart Love is indescribable and unconditional. I could tell you a thousand things that it is not, but not one that it is. - Duke Ellington To love someone is to see a miracle invisible to others. - Francois Mauriac Love is not blind, it simply enables one to see things others fail to see. - Anonymous 'I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.' - Rita Rudner Never close your lips to those whom you have opened your heart. - Charles Dickens Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired. - Robert Frost All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. - Leo Tolstoy Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love. - William Shakespeare How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. - Elizabeth Barrett Browning Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and a richness to life that nothing else can bring. - Oscar Wilde

Trivia

Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, here’s some not so useful trivia about one of the world’s oldest traditions.  Each year, flowers make up for 32 per cent of revenue in annual sales on Valentine’s Day. Apart from many colors, red and pink flowers are the most popular flowers sold in Australia.  Seventy three per cent of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.  Only the U.S, Canada, Mexico, France, Australia and the U.K. celebrate Valentine's Day.

Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country Toastmasters

Contributed Martine Goedhart

On Thursday, January 27 we had our first meeting of the year in the hall of the Church on the Rise. After a six week break, it did not take long before everyone was back in the Toastmaster’s spirit again. A lively and productive meeting saw us ready for the upcoming year. Almost one month gone in the New Year and for those of you who are still thinking about doing something worthwhile in 2011, there are still 11 months left. So come and join us at our Toastmaster’s Club. Toastmasters International (TI) is a non profit educational organisation that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Through its thousands of member clubs, Toastmasters International offers a program of communication and leadership projects designed to help women and men learn

the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking. The organisation grew out of a single club, Smedley Club Number 1, which would become the first Toastmasters club. It was founded by Ralph C. Smedley on October 22, 1924, at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California. Throughout its history, Toastmasters has served over four million people, and today the organisation serves over 260,000 members in 113 countries, through its over 12,800 member clubs. Glasshouse Country is one of those clubs, we are the friendliest on the Coast. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month in the hall at the Church on the Rise in Beerwah from 9.15am - 11.30am. Come and judge for yourself, what Toastmasters is all about, millions of people did the same and it changed their lives. There are so many success stories to tell. If you like to know more, give us a call on 5496 9855 for Martine or 5493 0650 for Kerry, we love to hear from you.

Community Group Updates GMAN

Contributed by Cliff Schnick, President

Small community; Big heart! In just four hours, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) collected over $1,000.00 through a plant sale and snag sizzle / morning tea on Saturday morning. All proceeds, whether purchases or donations, went directly to the Queensland Premiers Flood Relief Fund. With very limited notice, people rallied to support the cause by buying Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vines, other local native plants and yummy barbecue snags and morning teas to make a contribution toward helping our Queensland neighbours north, south, east, and west, who have been affected by the floods

Australia Day

Proud to be an Australian

New Citizens

Queensland Youth Parliament

I wish to congratulate all those who received official recognition on Australia Day for community service and also those who took the time to attend a function on this important day or simply spent some time with family and friends at the local park or at the beach. Australia is a lucky country, and Australia Day on January 26 is a day to remember the many good things that make our country the envy of many nations around the world. I particularly congratulate the 26 recipients of Fisher Community Australia Day Awards, which I was honoured to present in conjunction with members of the Fisher Australia Day Committee.

I love Australia Day as it gives us the chance to reflect on what it means to be an Aussie and celebrate the achievements of people within our local community and our country. This year I celebrated my Australia Day with the Palmwoods locals at their annual ceremony and then spent some time at the Caboolture Historical Village who kindly donated 10 per cent of the takings from the day to the flood relief appeal. I also had the chance to be present when many Glass House locals, including Mrs Eileen Schaffer of Glasshouse Mountains and Mr Trevor Taylor of Peachester, picked up awards at Peter Slipper’s annual Fisher Australia Day celebrations. Well done to all recipients for your contribution to our community.

While on the subject of Australia Day, I congratulate the scores of local residents who became Australian Citizens this year on Australia Day. I was able to attend and officiate at two citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day and it was great to see so many people pledging their loyalty to our great nation on this special day. To become a citizen is a significant step and to take that step on Australia Day makes it all the more memorable. Australian citizenship was first introduced in 1949 with the enactment of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948. Before this, most Australian residents were British subjects. It is interesting to note that more than four million people have become Australian citizens in the past 60 years, and today more than 95 per cent of the nation’s population are Australian citizens.

Nominations are now opened for the 2011 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. Students aged 15 to 25 are welcome to apply and any Year 11 or 12 students who are selected to participate in the program can even get credit towards their senior certificate. One student is selected from each electorate in Queensland and they will get the chance to be a ‘Member of Parliament’ for a week from September 25 - October 1, 2011. Nominations close 5.00pm Friday, February 25. Further information and a nomination form can be found at www.ymcaqyp.org or call my office on 5435 2013.

Grant for Veterans

I am pleased to announce a grant of $2,550 for the Queensland RSL Bowls Association (Sunshine Coast) to undertake a project that includes a series of bus trips for members. The funds come from the Veteran and Community Grants programme, and aims to support a range of community activities that promote healthy lifestyles for veterans. I congratulate the Queensland RSL Bowls Association on its receipt of the grant.

Flood assistance

I would encourage any small businesses who have been impacted by the floods to make application for financial assistance though the Government. Visit website www.business.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23 to access information kits and other resources that explain how to apply for assistance. Help in the way of tax assistance, insurance and bank emergency relief packages is all available on this website. I know some Glass House businesses have been hit hard by this crisis and I wish you all the very best as you begin to rebuild and plan for the future. I understand through the Department of Sport and Recreation there may also be some funding available of up to $5,000 for sporting organisations who need to replace sport and recreation equipment, white goods and canteen items. Grants of up to $20,000 might also be available to assist with capital works projects to repair sport and recreation infrastructure. To find out more please call 1300 656 191.

Regional Director of Main Roads has sent elected representatives the latest information on the Main Roads network for distribution to the community. Although the weekly columns sometimes feed late information due to print deadlines, I felt it was important to provide. As many would have seen, significant damage to Steve Irwin Way between Bowen and Nursery Road occurred as a result of the heavy rain and work crews from Main Roads have worked around the clock to remedy. Other areas severely affected were the Maleny-Stanley River Road near Booroobin where a side track has been installed while significant slip issues are resolved. Maleny-Kenilworth Road at Conondale - The department is undertaking inspections to assess the safety of the Grigor Bridge, which was damaged from flood water. Repair works will be needed on the deck of the bridge and to the bridge’s approaches. Thank you to Mr Tennant, the Regional Director for providing this information and for the assistance from State member for GlassHouse Andrew Powell for working in such a co-operative way with council.

Important information about your rates

Due to the recent flooding in South East Queensland there was a one week delay sending out the Sunshine Coast Council rates notices. Council has therefore decided to extend its five per cent discount for prompt payment by one week. You will now have until Friday, February 25 to pay your rates and still get the reduction. Unfortunately the extension hasn’t been included on the rates notice, which still has the original due date. If you need any further information please contact Sunshine Coast Council via email at rates@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or web http://www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ or phone 5475 7542.

Sunshine Coast Council is advising residents in areas where access has been affected by flood, to leave their bin out on the kerb until it is emptied. Refuse trucks have been unable to gain access to some flood or road damaged areas, however each of the three waste contractors are gradually catching up on the backlog and in most cases, services should return to normal shortly. Contractors are doing their best to catch up on missed services, while they catch up, collections could occur on any day of the week, so please leave your bins out on the kerb until they are emptied. In some instances, there are roads that require safety inspections and possible repair work prior to them being reopened to refuse trucks. Areas we know are affected are Cooran, Pomona, Conondale and Kenilworth and some areas in the southern hinterland. If anyone is experiencing issues because of the collection delay, they should contact the regional waste collection manager on 0419 740 963.

Financial Assistance - Flood Damage

The following information has been received from an Organisation call ‘Red Tape Busters’. The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGRDP) is available for people who have been significantly impacted by the floods, $1,000.00 is available for each eligible adult and $400.00 for each eligible child, including people who have lost their homes or whose homes have sustained major damage. Disaster relief funding arrangements have also been activated for people experiencing personal hardship in a number of local government areas. Small businesses and primary producers in many Local Government Areas are eligible to receive grants of up to $25,000 for clean up and recovery, and there are grants of up to $5,000 for replacement of operational items such as sport and recreation equipment, white goods and canteen items. Grants of up to $20,000 are also available to assist with capital works projects to repair sport and recreation infrastructure which was damaged as a result of recent winds or flooding. Nation’s first DonateLife Week this month Australians are being encouraged to share their stories about organ and tissue donation to help generate discussion on the subject during DonateLife Week which starts on Sunday, February 20. The goal of DonateLife Week is for all Australians to have a memorable discussion with their loved ones to ensure they know and understand their organ and tissue donation wishes. More people making known their wishes will lead to increased family consent rates and therefore more Australians receiving organ and tissue transplants. For information on DonateLife Week and all the facts on organ and tissue donation visit www.donatelife.gov.au

Move towards health

(near IGA)

with Braxton Turnage

Move towards health Moving towards something pleasant is much easier than moving away from the unpleasant. Coming from a small town in the US, I’d always hear people say ‘I’m moving away from this place!’. Now, 10 years down the road, a majority of those people are still in that small town of Kaplan. Imagine if those people had said, ‘I’m moving somewhere with a beach!’. Now that gives excitement and direction, and gives a better chance of actually making the move. Taking it one step further, imagine if those same people had said ‘I’m moving to the Sunshine Coast of Australia by July 2009!’. What a difference it makes when you move towards something pleasant, rather than moving away from the unpleasant. This idea can be applied to all aspects of life, and I encourage you to apply it towards your

health. Rather than attempting to get away from sickness, try moving towards health for a change. The best first step is identifying exactly where you want to go. Maybe stress is the major factor disturbing your health. Create a goal, for example, ‘reduce my stress levels by 50 per cent by March 30, 2011’. Then make a plan, and put it into action. A quick internet search of ‘stress reducing activities’ will give you a great start. Maybe extra kilos are your biggest health issue. Tell yourself ‘I want to lose 15 kilos by May 30, 2011 so I can become a healthier person’. Then create a plan that will get you there, and get started! Remember, the easiest, most effective program for weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. Good health is something to enjoy! Give yourself direction by creating specific goals (with deadlines), create plans that will accomplish those goals, and start moving towards better health.

Beerwah Wellness Clinic Beerwah Plaza Floods scam warning Centrelink has warned about scam phone calls and text messages that aim to defraud people of their Australian Government Disaster Recovery payments. Centrelink General Manager Hank Jongen said a small number of people have received fraudulent phone calls and text messages in recent days. “It’s unfortunate and despicable that a small number of people are attempting to defraud those in need of help,” Mr Jongen said. He said some phone calls and text messages are incorrectly claiming that people have received emergency assistance payments in error and that they should deposit the money into a nominated bank account.

5494 0499 In other cases, people are being asked to provide personal information, such as their bank details or address, so an inspection on their property can be carried out. “Do not respond to these scam text messages or provide this type of personal information over the phone,” Mr Jongen said. “Centrelink is not making phone calls or sending text messages saying flood disaster payments have been wrongly paid and need to be returned.” "I urge anyone who suspects they have received a scam phone call or text message to report any details including the phone number, time, date, gender and accent of the caller to the Australian Government’s designated fraud tip-off line on 13 15 24."

Everyday women, extraordinary lives 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of when the first International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In commemoration of the centennial anniversary, the state government has announced ‘Celebrating 100 years of women’s achievements’ as its theme for IWD 2011 and launched an online tribute gallery to profile the contributions of everyday Queensland women in the lead up to IWD on March 8. The ‘Everyday women, extraordinary lives’ gallery, now live at www.women.qld.gov.au, provides an opportunity to acknowledge our State’s female achievers, including quiet achievers, who are

shaping Queensland by making a difference in the lives of the people they know and the communities they live in. It is a great chance for all Queenslanders to share the story of a Queensland woman or girl, aged 12 years or over, who is making a difference. Nominations for the gallery will remain open until March 8. All girls and women featured in the gallery will receive a certificate and centenary lapel pin. For more information, visit www.women.qld.gov.au or call Women’s Infolink on 1800 177 577 (8.00am – 6.00pm, Monday – Friday).

GCNews would love to hear from locals who are looking at taking up this great opportunity to pay tribute to a special female in their lives. If you are considering posting a tribute on the gallery, or just want to celebrate someone special in the lead up to International Women’s Day, email us at editorial@gcnews.com.au phone the office on 5494 6066, or log a comment on our website, at www.gcnews.com.au

Out and About Australia Day at Aussie World Australia Day festivities were an outstanding success at Aussie World with thousands of people attending the event last Wednesday. Eight corporate teams vied for the title of Dunny Race Champion of the World but it was the two teams from the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles who won first and second place. The team from Uppercuts valiantly won the Tug-of-War contest, while the overall winner of the Australia Day Ute Show was Jason Uren with his Ford ute.

Things 2 Do Show must go on! Heart of Gold International Film Festival Chair, Katrina Pedersen, has made a solid commitment that the Gympie based festival will go on despite the devastating events of the past weeks. She said that the floods came at a time when the festival was in the midst of securing sponsorships and donations. Unfortunately the result has been a significant decrease in sponsorship dollars and the board had to decide whether to proceed. She said the Heart of Gold International Film Festival was created to showcase uplifting, positive and inspiring films. “Heart of Gold has become an important and positive part of the community and at this time will not only provide a positive and inspiring event but will also assist the local economy by promoting the Gympie region, and by attracting a large number of visitors.” “We would also, of course, still love to hear from any individuals or businesses that could assist the festival and provide sponsorship,” Ms Pedersen added. The Heart of Gold International Film festival opens on March 17 and will feature over 200 films from around the world. The program will be launched on February 17. Check out www.heartofgold.com.au for more information.

Calling all brave and bold Sunshine Coast shavers Sunshine Coast residents are being encouraged to join other brave and bold shavers across the state preparing to lose their locks in aid of leukaemia and blood cancer patients from March 10-12. The Leukaemia Foundation’s major annual fundraiser, World’s Greatest Shave, challenges participants to shave, colour or wax their locks or lose their dreadlocks or ponytails in return for sponsorship from family, friends and co-workers. Individuals, families, businesses, workplaces, schools, pubs and clubs with a strong community spirit can sign up now at worldsgreatestshave.com, and find all the information they need to plan a fun and successful shave event. Funds raised by World’s Greatest Shave will help provide almost 40,000 nights of free accommodation a year to patients and their families undergoing treatment in Brisbane or Townsville. In 2009/2010, more than 3,910 nights of accommodation were for patients and their families from the Sunshine Coast. The Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation and does not receive ongoing government funding. Will you be brave and shave? For further information, public shave locations or to sign up visit worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088.

The misfortune of meeting a sociopath

In times of crisis, it’s hard to imagine sociopaths are carefully selecting their victims. I’ve had the misfortune of watching two of my local mates fall victim to a scam which has lost them $100,000.00 and each day we hear of others in the community being groomed by this same person and other fraudulent con-artists. There is only one way to protect yourself from sociopaths – know what they are, and put your guard up when you start seeing the signs. They are prolific con artists. Here are some typical con artist tricks. Lavish flattery - If you've just met someone who is overwhelming you with praise, attention and concern, be careful. Credentials – Exaggerated and fabricated. Con artists may ‘prove’ themselves by namedropping or volunteering detailed resumes or credentials. Check their references if you’re suspicious. Building your trust – Con artists will sometimes honor their commitments in the beginning so that you begin to trust them. They'll pay back initial loans, or appear to be unselfishly helping other people. Their objective is to get you to drop your guard. The story doesn't quite add up – The con artist's story may have small inconsistencies or unexplained loose ends. If you ask questions, the con will glibly provide an explanation—which may also not add up. ‘I need an answer now’ – A crisis needs to be averted, an opportunity will disappear—whatever the reason, a con artist will want an answer right away. Intense eye contact – Typically, when people talk to each other, they look each other in the eyes and then briefly look away. Sociopathic con artists often exhibit a ‘predatory stare’—unblinking, fixated and emotionless. Isolation – Con artists will slowly and subtly separate you from people who may question their plans. Sociopaths work long and hard to get what they want. In most cases, they weasel their way into your life over a period of time. If you suspect you’re tangled in the web of a sociopath, talk to your family, friends or even the police. Don’t fall victim to these crimes. James Ashby Beerwah

Flood thanks

A warm thank you to the great people in Spanner and Johnson Roads, who came and helped us sandbag our home on January 11. We could not get onto the SES so my husband went and brought sand and bags and these wonderful people came to help us, rain and all, to fill and place the sand bags, saving the water from flowing through our home. It only came in through the weep holes. Also thank you to our great families who helped the next day to pack up our home and remove all carpets etc. We have a wonderful family unit on both sides and really appreciate them, so thank you all, you know who you are. It made us very proud to be Aussies. Many, many thanks. Ron and Diann Shaw, Glass House Mountains

I salute you

Thanks so much to everyone who made our Linen collection at the Beerwah CWA Hall such a tremendous success. We have had people donating items from Maleny to Nambour and even Brisbane. The response has been incredible, including many new items that people purchased specifically to donate. Thanks also to the CWA ladies who have assisted in the collection. The donations were delivered to Jandowae and Condamine to a pastor that goes out to the whole shire. So we need to give a big pat on the back to the generous couples who hired trailers and paid for the petrol to transport the items out to help our fellow Queenslanders, Mavis and Rod Matheson, Peter and Kay Farrell and three couples from the Glasshouse Knitting Group. News In Brief Road closed or open? Check council maps

A number of Sunshine Coast Council controlled roads are still affected by water, subsidence or landslips. But now you can visit an online map on council’s website to check whether roads in your part of the Coast are passable. While affected roads are listed on a separate page, the map shows where the roads are actually located in the Sunshine Coast. Visit http://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=roadclosures to make sure your journey can be completed in safety and in a timely manner. The site information is automatically updated hourly, on the hour. Note that the maps only refer to council-controlled roads; to check the state of main roads in the region, go to www.131940.qld.gov. au and scroll down to ‘Northern Region’.

Local artists add colour to music festival

Artists of the vocal variety aren’t the only ones with a chance to make some noise at this year’s Caloundra Music Festival. Locals with a flair for graphic art will also have a chance to express their talents at one of the Coast’s major cultural events. Festival Director Richie Eyles said a competition to design the event’s official poster was now open to local residents. “This is a first for the Caloundra Music Festival and it’s offering Sunshine Coast residents some fantastic rewards if they can come up with the winning design for this year’s event poster,” he said. “The successful entrant will win $2,000 in prize money and have the chance to work with the Festival team and have their design developed and displayed to the world via posters, TV, website, festival T-shirts and other merchandise.” “The Festival is a significant event for the Coast and one that the Sunshine Coast Council is very proud to partner with many local supporters to bring to fruition. “Offering this competition brings a new community dimension to the event and is really going to enhance that local flavour.” There will also be a number of competition prizes for runners-up, including Festival tickets and merchandise. The Festival, now in its fifth year, has gone from strength to strength attracting Australian and international artists including Powderfinger, Jet, Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes, Pete Murray, Hoodoo Gurus, Kate Miller, Heidke and Toni Childs. Local and emerging artists also appear at the Festival, performing to the big crowds alongside the headline acts. The design competition closes on February 28. Further details can be found at www.caloundramusicfestival.com

Council boosts flooding assistance

Sunshine Coast Council has recommended it boost its initial $20,000 donation to the Premiers Flood Appeal to four times that amount. A council committee has recommended the sum be increased to $80,000, as a cash component of council’s overall financial and material commitment to the flood response. In addition to the donation, a services package of some $50,000 in support to other Queensland councils has not only been pledged, it has been rolling out since the impact of the first deluge hit the Rockhampton and Bundaberg regions. While ensuring we maintain sufficient staff and equipment to restore and maintain our own roadways, buildings and other coast infrastructure, council has responded to calls from South East Queensland councils hit hard by the floods, including Brisbane, Ipswich, Gympie, Somerset, Western Downs and Lockyer Valley. Mayor Bob Abbot said the donation amount would be increased after recognisng the massive devastation that has become apparent since the original $20,000 contribution. “This (proposed) amount is the same as this council committed to the Victorian bushfire appeal,” he said. “The new figure has been recommended to next Wednesday’s Ordinary meeting, taking into account a commitment from Rockhampton Regional Council of $50,000 to the Premier’s Appeal, even though parts of their own city have been ravaged by flood waters for more than four weeks.” At the time of writing, council has sent skilled staff and equipment to Chinchilla, Dalby, Gatton and other Lockyer Valley townships, Ipswich, Brisbane, Gympie and the Somerset Council region. This commitment will be ongoing into the foreseeable future. Council has also recommenced supplying staff volunteers to meet requests from Brisbane City Council. A bus kindly donated by Budget Rent A Car in Maroochydore has recently been ferrying volunteers, accompanied by a council truck and crew, a ute and heavy equipment to specific destinations, giving the combined team the ability to completely clear a designated area in a short time – and take the debris away.

A country atmosphere

Here is a home you might think is in a country setting with a large park with playground equipment right beside it. At the back of this fully fenced 1667m2 block you have a bush setting with a small bubbling creek and that leaves you with neighbours on one side only. The property features a four bedroom brick home with an ensuite, large dining living area with air-con and separate lounge, an above ground swimming pool, fully fenced with timber decking. There is room to build a large shed or park a boat or caravan with the side access. The open plan kitchen has a glass cooktop, electric stove, oven and rangehood, pantry and dishwasher. Off the kitchen there is a large alfresco area - room for the bbq and outdoor setting, overlooking the garden. The carpets in bedrooms one, two and three need replacing and you get to pick the colour of the new carpet. There are security screens and a DLUG and two garden sheds. You are only minutes to kindy, school, shops and rail, 25 minutes to the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane is only 70km away. This property is definitely worth having a look and is priced at $450,000. FAMILY GUARANTEES POPULAR IN SCRAMBLE FOR PROPERTY Family guarantees are becoming increasingly popular as buyers scramble to get into the property market for the first time, ‘trade up’ or buy an investment property. According to Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers, family guarantees offer the means to ‘buy time’. However, if using a family guarantee, Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison strongly advises borrowers to establish an exit strategy. “In the face of tightening lending criteria, it makes sense to consider other lending options, like family guarantees,

which offer borrowers a viable alternative,” Teresa said. “However, the most important step in putting a family guarantee in place is to ensure there is an exit plan – a plan designed to release the guarantors (generally parents) from the loan to fund their child’s home as soon as possible. This is a relief for the guarantor, who doesn’t want the burden of a 30-year loan on their property limiting their options, including the ability to sell their house.” To exit a family guarantee, Teresa suggests having the child’s home revalued down the track to assess the property’s

equity, which can be used to release the guarantors. “Let’s say that your son or daughter purchases a home for $400,000,” Teresa explains. “Generally, we would look at having the property revalued in about five years’ time and, assuming it increased in value to $500,000, your child could then get an 80 per cent loan for $400,000 and you as the parent can be released from the loan. In this example, the child now has enough equity in the property in their own right to not need the guarantee. And, as a result of the family guarantee, they have saved about $9000 in LMI (Lender’s Mortgage

Insurance) on the initial purchase.” Although commonly used by first home buyers, Teresa says a family guarantee is a useful tool for those looking to make the move up to their second or third home, or even for buying an investment property. “There are many options available to borrowers when face with any property purchase decision. The advice and guidance of an experience adviser can be invaluable.”

had been affected by the flood. All these people were tremendously grateful for the help of the volunteers. The man who lost his mother did not know how he would cope with the clean up. The volunteers did it all in two and a half days, that is, got everything out and cleaned up everything. He was forever grateful. Another point which I would like to mention is how vulnerable we as human beings are when it comes to natural disasters. It can just happen and we can’t do anything about it. Then I think of God and how we can trust Him in natural disasters. Even though they are bad it can ease our minds and help us to go through this, especially if it is combined with others helping. We have seen this in the disaster when people helped each other. My God is such a great God. I know that he is there for me in all situations. The further we are away from the disaster let us not forget God is always there for us and we need each other.

A new year is upon us and we just have had a great disaster in Queensland with all the floods and the death which occurred as a result. The longer we are away from the disaster the danger is that we forget how bad it really was. Not everybody was affected. But many did get directly affected and lost everything. I think of a woman with children in Rocklea who was renting a house. She lost everything she had, precious photos and memorabilia from her deceased father. Everything went under water. Another man who lost his mother four years ago, everything went under water in his house. Or the older couple next door to him who had lived in the same house in the 1974 flood. They have gone through this twice in their lifetime. In this case their children came to help them and also a group of volunteers. It was great to see them working side by side to help the unfortunate who

COMMUNITY RECYCLING INC

Community Recycling Inc would like to thank everyone who recycled over the Christmas break. We saw lots of batteries, plastic, electrical items, wrapping paper, cardboard, clothing, house hold items, furniture and other items replaced by gift givers. Also we’d like to welcome new residents to the area. We have met with a few of you when you came in to the Resource Recovery Centre with cardboard and paper. You’re welcome to take a look around the centre, just call in and arrange it with the staff. Items you can take to your local Resource Recovery Centre: All dry cell batteries (A, C, D, etc, drill; phone and other battery packs) just place them in a separate bag. Whole phones, electrical items working or not, aluminium items, steel, glass, plastic, wood, green waste, engine oil, cooking oil, paper and cardboard, car batteries. The charge rate is displayed on the outside wall of the receiving bay as you enter the site and drive under the awning towards the stop sign, or ask the staff if you are unsure or need more information. Other items accepted at the site are household items, furniture, kitchen items, books, crockery, glass wear, anything you don’t need at home that could be sold in the market. There is no charge for items that are saleable. Place all clothing items into the orange bins on site (no rubbish to be placed into the bags). Recycling in the garden - have you thought of putting your water plants into old sinks or laundry tubs? Water plants like ‘Water Celery’ – variegated leaf is edible, also ‘Bacopa’ blue flower has edible leaf, along with ‘Indian Cress’– pinkish flower can be used in salads. See your local nursery to find out what other water plants you have growing in your garden that may be edible.

LIKE genetics, an upcoming competition is designed to bring out the best in the best among budding young plant breeders. Genetic experiments in barley are among the activities open to students from years Prep to Year 12 taking part in the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation’s prestigious 2011 Hermitage Research Station Schools Plant Science Competition. Other tasks offered under the theme ‘Are You a Gene Genius?’ include using Lego blocks to understand basic genetics, studying genetic variations among classmates and learning more about the groundbreaking work of leading geneticists. The competition, now in its 15th year, starts this week with 73 Queensland schools and one from Victoria already registered. Registrations are open until March and the competition closes on Friday, May 20. This year’s experiments are shorter in duration, giving late starters plenty of time to take part and complete their work. Three activities specifically involve interesting experiments with barley. In one experiment, students will have two weeks to grow barley and to accurately identify the chlorophyll-deficient mutants and the healthy plants. The second experiment involves growing barley plants with lethal gene combinations, see how well they grow and record the ratio of dying plants to healthy plants.

New foe for flood-affected producers With much of Queensland recovering from floods, producers in flood-affected areas of the state are urged to be on the lookout for a new foe in the coming weeks – poisonous plants. Biosecurity Queensland Principal Veterinary Officer Rick Whittle said toxic plant seeds could become displaced during flooding and spread easily, prompting new growth in areas previously not infested. “As plant life starts to regenerate and shoot up in new areas, producers should keep a watchful eye on livestock for any signs of illness and lookout for poisonous plants,” Dr Whittle said. “Producers need to keep an eye out for plants they know are toxic as well as unusual plants they don’t recognise. “These plants may appear to be harmless to

hungry or naive livestock, especially if they are new to a locality, but once ingested, they can cause serious problems. Dr Whittle said during overcast conditions or if plants are stressed or wilted, common plants can also become toxic. “Some poisoning can be fatal within as little as an hour, so in many cases urgent action may be the key to saving animals.” Producers should contact their local veterinarian for advice and treatment if plant poisoning is suspected. For more information about plant poisoning visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23. Biosecurity Queensland is now on Facebook and Twitter. Follow us on Twitter @BiosecurityQld. Tradies reminded contracts and insurance can’t be ignored in rebuild The Building Services Authority has reminded building and construction contractors that where appropriate they must continue to use contracts and pay insurance premiums during repair and rebuilding work following the Queensland floods. General Manager of the BSA, Ian Jennings, said work must be done under the appropriate building contract with the owner of the property. “Even if you are working for an insurance company, you must have the appropriate contract documentation completed. This protects you as much as the consumer,” Mr Jennings said. He reminded contractors they must pay the

appropriate Home Warranty Insurance premium for residential construction work worth more than $3,300.00. “The requirement to pay insurance applies whether you are working directly for a consumer or through an insurance company. The premium is payable on the value of the contract.” The premium can be paid by phoning the Building Services Authority on 1300 272 272. A PIN number is required to access this service but if you do not have a PIN, you can call this number and the BSA will issue you with one. Mr Jennings also reminded consumers and

contractors that they should not enter into ‘costplus’ contracts, where the quote charges for materials plus a percentage for labour. “Under these arrangements, consumers have little control over final costs and completion times and they will not be able to lodge a non-completion claim under the BSA’s Home Warranty Scheme in the event of a non-completion event. “I would take this opportunity to again remind consumers to obtain at least two quotes for any work they require.” Mr Jennings has also reminded owner-builders that they were ineligible for coverage under the Home Warranty Scheme.

BeeGees - Hectic Sign on Contributed by Frank Doonan

What a hectic three weeks it has been with the sign on days. The amount of children signing on has been excellent. The last two Saturdays were extremely busy and we thank all the parents for their patience’s as we had queues of people out the door waiting to sign their children on for the session. With all the players that have signed on we will now start placing these children into age groups and teams. If you have missed out on the sign on days and still want to play please contact the club through our web site and or email your information to us. We cannot guarantee that we can place the players in a team but we will see what we can do for you. Until we have finalised the numbers and age groups we cannot guarantee what player will be in what team. The Trial Match for the senior men’s went fabulously. Taringa Rovers were our opponent for the night and both squads had plenty of young talent on show. This team is a premier team in the Brisbane competition and was on the coast

Sign-on 2011 season

for a bonding and training exercise. We fielded three different teams on the night. Terry Jones was pleased with what he saw with the players. Training for the men’s team is from 7.00pm to 9.00 pm, the 17’s from 5.30pm to 7.00pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, Women’s training is 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesdays. Senior men’s will start playing in the Johnny Warren Cup on February 19, this is a round robin event played on the coast every year. Please support our sponsors where and whenever you can as they are the life blood of our club. Our major sponsors for the year are Amestos Transport, The Beerwah Hotel, Landsborough Pub and the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. If anyone would like to get involved with our club through sponsorship or volunteering please contact us anytime, contact details are on our web site. Don’t forget our web site www.beegeesunited. com or find us on Face book.

Ari Kuster, Ann Hill and Riana Loffel-Stadhagen from Beerwah Karate were all nominees in The Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Awards, in the Sports and Recreation division. They are pictured after being awarded their certificates by Olympic Gold Medallist, Steven Bradbury.

A travel agent looked up from his desk to see an old lady and an old gentleman peering in the shop window at the posters showing the glamorous destinations around the world. The agent had had a good week and the dejected couple looking in the window gave him a rare feeling of generosity. He called them into his shop: “I know that on your pension you could never hope to have a holiday, so I am sending you off to a fabulous resort at my expense, and I won't take no for an answer.” He took them inside and asked his secretary to

write two flight tickets and book a room in a five star hotel. As could be expected they gladly accepted, and they were off! About a month later the little old lady came in to his shop. “And how did you like your holiday?” he asked eagerly. “The flight was exciting and the room was lovely,” she said. “I've come to thank you but, one thing puzzled me. Who was that old bloke I had to share the room with?” Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
