Hi Everyone Well lately you might have felt plenty of humidity in the air but apparently there is a change coming through and on Saturday you can expect the air to be alive to the feelings of love. Yep once again the countdown is on until Valentine’s Day and I know that there are plenty of cynical types out there that laugh at the whole idea of a day dedicated to showing your special someone what they mean to you, but what can it hurt? I am not saying that everyone needs to receive a big diamond ring to know that they are loved (but I am sure if you were to pop into Smiley’s or Flair, our local jewellery stores, they would be able to show you some lovely ones) but there are plenty of other nice things you can do to show someone that you love them.

Why not enjoy some time together with a meal out? Beerwah Hotel, Glass House Tavern and the Landsborough Hotel are all offering special evenings. Or for those of you who like the traditional approach you will want to get your flowers orders in early with Beerwah Flowers and Gifts, and for those of you in the Palmview, Glenview and Mooloolah areas you will be pleased to know that the Aussie World Florist is open once again – so no excuses! Anyway, whatever you decide to do – I am sure it will be appreciated! Regards,

Local News

Starting with a donation of $50.00, the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre combined efforts with White’s IGA, placing donation buckets at the supermarket counters. Three weeks later, the donations to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal had risen to $1,500. Vice President of the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre, Natasha Odgers, said it was pleasing to get such a positive community response. “The original plan was to keep the donation buckets out for two weeks, but community donations were still flowing strong after that time so we decided to keep it going. It is uplifting to see how by simply combing contributions of small change and larger notes from the local community, collectively we can make a bigger difference. This was one way for people to donate cash who may not have donated otherwise by credit card or bank deposits,” Natasha said. White’s IGA provided opportunities for people to donate items such as cleaning products and food to relieve people in heavily flooded areas. Donations of items filled the baskets at an impressive rate, and Ken Grant and Debbie Martin from White's IGA drove with their families to hard hit areas such as Goodna and Rocklea, to walk the streets and provide help to residents with cleaning products, food and helping hands. White’s IGA Manager, Ken Grant, said they wanted to do something to help. “When you have helpful people and supermarket items, it’s an obvious way to lend a hand. It was shocking to see the mess left after the floods. At the same time, it was so impressive to see how so many people came together to offer what they could,” Ken said. Ken said they had since received a letter from two families in Goodna who they helped clean up. Donations can be made until February 28.

Large rock and boulder movements have forced the closure of the Mount Beerwah summit trail. Visitors to the Glass House Mountains National Park must heed warning signs and track closures. Department of Environment and Resource Management senior ranger Wyn Boon said members of the public who ignore the warnings and enter closed sections of our national parks not only put their own lives at risk, but also the lives of authorities who may be required to rescue them. Unauthorised entry by a member of the public to a closed section of a national park can attract an on-the-spot fine of up to $400.00. The picnic area and western boundary walk are unaffected and remain open. Alternative summit trails are available at Mt Ngungun and Mt Tibrogargan. The summit trail and access to the cliff face will remain closed until QPWS can determine there is no further threat to public safety. Weather permitting, QPWS staff will be assessing what work may need to be undertaken to assist in making the site safe. Members of the public are urged to check park alerts on the DERM website to ensure these alternatives remain open, particularly following periods of wet weather. Approximately 12,500 visitors use the Mt Beerwah Summit Trail annually.

A cuppa and a chat for local defence families If you have a family member currently serving in the Australian Defence Force then you might want to consider going along to the new monthly ADF Morning Tea at the Beerwah / Peachester Veterans Drop in Centre. Bernard Verwayen, Pensions Officer and Advocate from the Pensions Advocacy and Welfare Service (PAWS) said that they recently discovered there was a need for a place where families of servicemen and servicewomen could get together to not only get important information but to realise that other families are going through the same or similiar issues. “We found there was a need for it in the area and we need to support these people. We‘ve got people coming to provide information and we’ll try and have a guest speaker every one or two months,” Bernard said. Other groups are also assisting with information and support such as Partners Offering Support and Hope (POSH) and Defence Partners Association. It is envisioned that the morning tea is not just for information, but a relaxed and friendly way for families to make connections. Lindsay Prentice, Welfare Office from PAWS said they hope it will become a social thing for people as well as a support group. “It’s so they can get to know people in the same situation. The most important thing is that the ADF families feel they are not alone,” she said. The ADF morning tea will be held at Beerwah / Peachester Veterans Drop in Centre, 1 Free Street Beerwah at 10.00am on the first Friday every month. Participants don’t need to bring anything, just themselves. If you would like more information ring 5439 0641 or call Bernard 0410 549 475, Jenny 0418 602 299 or Lindsay Bernard Verwayen (Pension officer -advocate) 0424 981 452, Kath and Keith Chay (parents of ADF recruits) or just come along Margie Andrews (POSH - Partners offering support on the day.

Mumma packs on the way

With five children between them and one on the way, you would think Landsborough’s Julia Meaker and Dani Anspach of Maroochydore would have more than enough to keep them busy. Apparently not. The pair, who run the Sunny Coast Baby and Kids Market at Nambour, have been busy preparing hundreds of ‘mumma packs’ to send off to families affected by the state’s recent flood crisis. While Julia has been collecting all the baby and mum toiletries, such as nappies, wipes, creams, and powder, Dani has been hand sewing the colourful draw string bags. Julia said they had received a great response to their campaign, which they had advertised at their first market earlier this year and via their facebook site, but welcomed more donations. To help out, give Julia a call on 0410 466 402 or email her at sunnycoastbabykidsmarket@hotmail.com They expect to deliver the mumma packs to child health centres in areas such as Theodore and other outlying areas in the southwest of the state next month. The next Sunny Coast Baby and Kids Market, held every second month, will be on Saturday, March 26 from 8.00am - 12.00noon at the PCYC in Nambour.

Last week Beerwah High Chaplain Mike Turner put out the call for mentors for their successful Mentoring Program which has been operating since 2007. In the meantime, we caught up with one mentor, Tracey Cremins, the Branch Manager of Suncorp Metway, Beerwah, to see what’s involved in being a mentor. Tracey, who has been mentoring for over a year, said she started at the beginning of last year when she saw the ad in GCNews. Tracey said mentoring can involve many different things. “I guess I see mentoring as not making a judgement, or not necessarily having a point of view Tracey Cremins on that, or a right or wrong, it’s sitting there and listening. “I think it’s different things to different students. If somebody would prefer to shoot hoops or kick a footie well, that’s what you do. If they need a hand with their homework that’s what you look at. “Each mentoring student has different projects at the moment. There’s lots of activities and games that Mike organises for us so it can involve a wide variety of things. It’s really being there for them.” Tracey said mentoring takes around an hour and a half per week, and Beerwah High Chaplain Mike Turner always tries to arrange a day that suits both mentor and student - not all mentors go on the same day. For Tracey volunteering her time was a way to put back into the community. “I recently took up some correspondence studies in life coaching so I saw that aligning itself quite nicely with the mentoring side. It was synchronicity, I feel like it was something I was meant to be doing. For me it’s about making a positive difference in someone’s life.” While it’s clear the students benefit from having a mentor, Tracey said mentoring is rewarding for her too. “I get satisfaction, that’s a huge thing, and just to know that hopefully I’ve made a difference this week to the student. They’ve had an hour and a half of one on one time and often a lot of children don’t get that.” Tracey would definitely encourage others to join the Mentoring Program. “Everybody’s lives are busy and I understand that, for both the mentor and mentee, but one and a half hours a week….it doesn’t sound like a lot but to that student it is a lot,” she said. If you are interested in being a mentor or would like to know more you can contact Mike Turner at the school on 5436 5333.

Traditional Australia Day breakfast at the Zoo Visitors to the Zoo were treated with a pleasant surprise of a typical Australian tradition of billy tea and damper, which was especially appreciated by international guests who learned some fair dinkum Aussie culture. Members of the Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains were out in full force, serving up the fare.

Romance, 52 weeks a year Valentine’s Day is a great way to bring out the romantic in anyone, but what happens when the day is over? Romance doesn’t have to be a once a year event. Mooloolah Valley writer, Deborah Gardner, has just published her new book, ‘52 Weeks Of His and Her Romance’, to teach people how romance can be a permanent part of any relationship. Deborah definitely thinks it’s possible to teach someone to be romantic. “The idea first came to me 10 years ago. I could see there was a need for guys to be given an idea how to be romantic because girls were wanting it and guys had no idea what to do. “I went looking for a book on romantic ideas for my partner and I couldn’t find any that were in the bookstores so I thought I could write one,” she said. So why is romance important? “Because it makes you feel wanted, makes you feel loved by receiving it; and also by doing it, it makes you feel happy to do something nice for somebody,” Deborah said. Deborah said there is lot more to romance than flowers, chocolates and dinner. “It’s the feeling of making someone feel loved that’s romantic. It could be anything. It doesn’t cost a lot of money to be romantic, just simple things like leaving a little note on the pillow saying ‘have a wonderful day’, or ‘I love you’. A walk in the park holding hands together. Just sitting together watching a fireplace at night or when the kids are in bed, share a bowl of ice-cream.” Her motto is ‘add a little romance’ and Deborah believes there is no age limit to romance. She also believes romance isn’t just good for relationships but for families.

Glasshouse Country Dog Wash

“For children growing up, if you have happy parents you have happy kids. If you show a little love the kids will follow suit,” she said. Deborah Gardner But perhaps the most important way to keep the romance flowing is to acknowledge and appreciate any romantic gesture no matter how Deborah Gardner big or small. Deborah is already planning a sequel and readers will be able to send her their own romance ideas and each contribution will be acknowledged in the book. “I also want the second book to be a little bit raunchy,” she said. ‘52 Weeks of His and Her Romance’ would make the perfect Valentine’s Gift, or a special gift for any special occasion. If you would like to purchase a copy ($19.95 plus $7.50 postage and handling) email info@fifty2weeks.com

GCNews has copies of Deborah Gardner’s ‘52 Weeks of His and Her Romance’ to give away to lucky readers. To go in the draw, simply email us at reception@gcnews.com.au or send your details on the back of an envelope to PO Box 99, Beerwah, 4519 by 5.00pm Wednesday, February 16. LED 240v (torch) bulb With the advent of the cyclone season and the possibility of blackouts, here is a light bulb that should be in every household! This LED bulb uses a mere four watts of power while delivering Here is a light bulb that should be in every household the equivalent amount of light as a 50W bulb. What makes it all the more special is its built-in rechargeable battery that will provide enough power for the bulb to keep on going for another three hours just in case you experience a blackout. Should the power outage require you to evacuate from wherever you are, just unscrew the bulb and extend its neck to turn it into an impromptu flashlight! No more searching for a torch when the lights go out, only to find it has a flat battery! You can even take it camping with you or on any other outdoor activities where you would normally need a torch. Used in your house, this four watt LED bulb offers power savings of around 80 per cent against traditional incandescent type lighting. Unlike compact fluorescent bulbs, the LED Bulb contains no harmful chemicals like mercury, nor does it emit harmful UV rays. Paul Sinclair, owner of Sinfin Lighting at Lake Kawana said “reduction in energy consumption of lighting has been identified in the beginning of 2009 by McKinsey, a well known analytical firm, as the most cost effective way to achieve significant reduction in CO2 emission worldwide and, LED lighting is the best technology to reduce energy consumption. “Our company’s goal is to provide high luminance, top quality and environmental friendly LED lighting products which can contribute to fight the global warming problem that every one of us is currently facing. By converting traditional lighting sources to LED lighting, we are able to save up to 90 per cent energy consumption,” he said. For more information phone Paul Sinclair on 0447 838 034.

Product review: Western Digital WD TV Live There are some really great products coming on to the market now that will allow you to easily watch movies and view other media on your tv. With the internet now making a large quantity of movies and music readily available to users, it makes sense to bring these files into the lounge room. The Western Digital ‘WD TV Live’ is a fantastic little product that is easy to use and inexpensive. And for a unit that fits in the palm of your hand, it will easily fit into the smallest of places in your home. Features The WD TV Live allows you to watch movies from a USB device such as an external hard drive or USB flash drive. It also has an ethernet port so if you have a media center, NAS Device or other computer nearby, it will allow you to stream movies from these devices. Because of the ethernet connection, this device can also be connected to the internet and will allow streaming of media from Youtube and other similar sites. In addition to ethernet connectivity it also has HDMI, Optical, Component and Composite connections. Performance This unit is very easy to use with a user friendly menu. The remote control is a bit cumbersome but don’t lose it - the unit is useless without the remote! The WD TV Live will play a wide variety of file formats so the compressed files that have been downloaded from the internet will have no problem in playing. Overall this is a worth while gadget to add to the collection. And with the price hovering anywhere between the RRP of $199 and $135, its a cost effective option.

Time to kill No... it’s not actually time to kill anything, but what do you do when you’re sitting around waiting, with some spare time on your hands? These days, it seems people have taken to pulling their mobile phone out of their pocket and fiddling around with the various games and entertainment options that come standard with many of today’s mobiles. This applies particularly to those with Apple iPhones, as there are literally hundreds of thousands of “apps” available to them. These “apps” are small programs that can be downloaded onto your iPhone as extras, and many of them are 100 per cent free. Today we take a brief look at some of the best of the freebies that are out there for the everincreasing iPhone user base. 1. Angry Birds Lite Who doesn’t love to sling-shot birds at constructions in order to demolish them? The “Lite” version of this incredibly popular app is 100 per cent free... if you haven’t tried it, get it now! 2. PAC-MAN Lite To celebrate PAC-MAN’s 30th birthday in 2010, Google made a playable version of the game available on their home page. Collectively, users across the globe spent millions of hours playing the game, showing us that everyone, everywhere, still loves PACMAN. 3. Dragon Dictation For the more serious folk amongst us who don’t know what spare time is, there’s a great free app which you can use to actually save yourself time. The Dragon Dictation app lets you create emails and text messages just by speaking. Take care of your work five times faster with voice translation software like Dragon Dictation.

A cutting edge Glass House Mountains business

James Home Services finds success in the hinterland

James Home Services started in Caloundra over 17 years ago and is now a National Franchise system with more than 400 Franchisees throughout Australia. Founder Robert James used to regularly wash cars in the Hinterland, and loves the area so much he lives in Mooloolah with his wife and family. Wife Rhonda James operates the Sunshine Coast Regional Master area and is leading the expansion of services into Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah, Maleny and Mooloolah Valley. “With two new Franchisees recently joining us in the Glasshouse region, we are now more able to service our clients in the area,” Rhonda said. “David and Debra Kelsey are our new Mobile Car Cleaners in the area, and living locally, they can guarantee quick, friendly and professional service for all Hinterland clients.” “David and Debra offer a full range of car cleaning and detailing services and can give your car a complete detail, including polishing and shampooing seats and carpets. They also do a regular wash and vac service starting from $39.00, and can come to you at home or work.” The recent expansion of James’ services into the Hinterland is not limited to car detailing, with Alison and Mana Taripo recently joining the team, offering Window and Exterior House Cleaning. “Alison and Mana can have your windows sparkling clean in no time!” Rhonda said. “Also they offer our Exterior House Cleaning service. After all the unseasonal wet weather we have experienced, we have a lot of clients with mould problems. Alison and Mana can help with pavers, verandahs, driveways or the whole outside of the house.” James Home Services still needs more motivated local people interested in being their own boss with the security of working with a National organisation. “We presently need Interior House Care, Pet Grooming and Lawn and Garden Care Franchisees in the Glasshouse Mountains and the Mooloolah Valley,” Rhonda said. “This is a great opportunity for a husband and wife team or an individual to have a great business and a flexible lifestyle.” Contact James Homes Services on 1800 1 james or http://www.jameshomeservices.com.au/

Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer

On Wednesday, February 2, the Glasshouse Country View Club enjoyed a splendid barbeque breakfast at the home of Joy Joyce, with sumptuous food cooked by Master Chef Rick (thanks Rick). A great sociable morning with raffles and plenty of stimulating chat resulted in all proceeds going to ‘flood relief’. The next club meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 16 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. This meeting will include lunch and a special guest speaker, Linda Anderson, whose topic will be ‘Sailing in my Sarong’. Sounds fascinating. Any ladies who would like to join the View Club

would be most welcome. We are always on the look out for new members to join our friendly group. If you are interested, please contact Joy on 5494 8444 or Pauline on 5438 7076 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. Glasshouse Toastmasters Missing: owners of devastated gum boots Standing like sentinels in the middle of a track in the Outback, there are two pairs of gumboots, dejected and lost, waiting for their owners return. Where are they? Local lady in English County shooting A mature Australian lady, travelling Europe, with the body eager but well worn, shoots the winning goal in a hockey game in an English County. (We won’t mention that it was shot into the opposing teams goals). Feeding the multitudes An Australian Dutch lady, visiting her homeland, has started cooking cookies for the Pope. This eventuated through a series of events, which

makes for fascinating reading. These are some of the speeches that you are entertained with when attending a meeting of our Club. Have you ever been to a Toastmasters Meeting? If not, why not? You are invited to a free Morning Tea and some lively entertainment on February 10 or 24. Please come along, you will be made very welcome and have a fun morning at the same time. Beerwah Writers Group Contributed by John Wright

The first meeting of 2011 opened with drive and enthusiasm and a review of our next anthology publication. This was followed by some word exercises which led to a lively discussion on how to handle idiom, dialect and accent when preparing text in dialogue. Bob read another chapter of his novel, an intriguing cameo of family drama. Shirley claimed everyone’s attention with her children’s story of Grandma’s little green car. Martin took us back to the first century by becoming Simon, who witnessed some of the most dramatic events in Jerusalem. This year’s program will bring more learning sessions, talks by various authors on a variety of writing topics and opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback. Meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, February 11. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Refreshments are provided for a small donation. Guests and visitors welcomed. Membership fee is $5.00 per year. For further information telephone John 5493 0624.

Plenty of plants up for grabs at sale

I have had a love of plants for many years. Many of these plants are now growing in and around the district, as I have donated lots of them to many stalls for a number of years. I now find that I must stop the propagation of plants and dispose of the lot. I have a large treasured collection of plants that I intend to sell on Saturday, February 19. For me, it will be a sad day, but I am sure that someone will love and care for them. All plant lovers are invited to look them over and take some home. I have large and small pots. Come along after 6.00am on Saturday, February 19 to Hempstock Street, Glass House Mountains, before it gets too hot, as they like being pampered. Del Davis, Glass House Mountains

Peachester Community

The response to the Peachester community flood victim’s donation and distribution project has been enormous. At one stage the Peachester Hall and annex area was full to overflowing with a wide range of items for the complete refitting of homes. These consignments have been delivered to Grantham and seven homes have been set up as a result. Wonderful support has been forthcoming from the local community as well as many neighbouring communities. Those of us who have been involved in the activities associated with conducting such a project would like to say a sincere THANK YOU and express our gratitude for the willing and unselfish attitude shown by the many businesses, families and individuals who combined in providing transport, collection of items, storage, sorting and labelling and selecting items to fill the needs of the homes to which the items were to be delivered. The value and reliability of the volunteer was again a major part in the success of a worthy project. Well done! As the project is continuing you can obtain details from Katya Skieling 5494 9464, 0417 625 194 or Howard Walker 5494 9564, 0400 727 935. Howard Walker, Peachester

Good news travels far

Brunch raises funds for flood victims

On Sunday, January 9, a brunch was held by the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church to raise funds to help Queensland flood victims. To date $1,200 has been received and sent to relevant organisations. A special thanks to the congregation for their generous support in such a devastating time for so many across the state. Eunice Prickett Peachester

A talented member of GCNews design team, Farley Cameron, proves that good news does travel far and wide. She is pictured at Angkor Wat, in Cambodia.

Mary Grigor (nee Fenwick) Before young Mary Fenwick married William Grigor and became mistress of Bankfoot House, she was a well-travelled young woman. By 1861, 27-year-old Mary Fenwick had travelled as a single woman one and a half times around the world, both via the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. Twenty-year-old Mary Fenwick, together with her family, arrived in Moreton Bay on January 19, 1855 after departing Liverpool on October 10,1854. The family settled in Eagle Farm and Mary took a position as tutor/governess to the children of Captain John Clements Wickham, First Police Magistrate and Government (NSW) Resident of the Moreton Bay District, at Newstead House. Captain Wickham’s first wife, Anna Macarthur, died in 1852, age 35, leaving him with two sons and a daughter. He remarried in 1857 to Ellen Deering. Following Queensland’s separation from NSW in 1859, Captain Wickham’s position was abolished. He returned to England with his family and his second wife Ellen was pregnant with their second child. Mary Fenwick sailed with the family continuing in her governess role. Mrs Wickham gave birth to a second son, Henry Falkland Wickham on board the ‘Duncan Dunbar’ in 1860, near the Falkland Islands. Mary’s job with the Wickhams ended in England and Mary returned to Australia on September 1, 1861, arriving back in Brisbane in December via Freemantle and Melbourne. The journey completed three major ocean crossings by sailing ship for a young single woman over a six year period. Back in Queensland Mary took a position as governess to the children of the McConnel family of Durundur Station (Woodford). Bankfoot House Open Day Sunday, June 5, 2011 Plans are in place for an ‘Open Day’ at Bankfoot House, Glass House Mountains to coincide with Qld Week and the Glasshouse Country Festival. More about this next month. For further information contact Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197, email friends@ bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder, president, 0407 760 989. Ride to school

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

The organisers of the National Ride2School programme are hoping the event will encourage children to get active and thereby help reduce obesity and increase the wellbeing of local children. This is a practical initiative that was established by ‘Bicycle Victoria’ in Victoria in 2004 but is spreading now to include schools around Australia, including the Sunshine Coast. Last year, the project involved some 140,000 school children from 1,090 schools. I encourage parents and teachers to learn more about this initiative by visiting www.bv.com.au

TV parent lock

From February 4, all new models of digital TVs sold in Australia must have a parental lock, advises the Australian Communications and Media Authority. The parental lock is designed to allow parents and guardians to protect children under their care from programmes that they believe to be unsuitable or harmful. The new requirement, announced in August 2010, requires a parental lock feature in new household equipment that is used for watching free-toair services, such as digital televisions, set-top boxes and personal video recorders. The lock will enable parents to block programmes based on the classification - G, PG, M or MA. A code number will be required to access specific programmes. The Broadcasting and Datacasting Services (Parental Lock) Technical Standard 2010, together with a range of information to assist consumers and equipment suppliers to comply with the standard, is available on the ACMA website. For more information, visit: www.acma.gov.au

Conondale visit

I was joined by State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell recently to tour the Conondale area recently to have a first hand look at the ongoing after effects of the flooding, including damage to bridges and roads, erosion and landslips. I have written to Premier Anna Bligh to draw her attention to the needs of the Conondale Valley in terms of flood damage repairs.

Bob’s Butchery The Lean Green Butchery

In February, Ovarian Cancer Australia conducts their national Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month designed to inform Australian women of the symptoms of ovarian cancer to help save lives. I encourage women of all ages to make themselves more aware of the symptoms in the month of awareness. This year, more than 1,200 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer, three women every day, and sadly, around 800 will die from the disease – one every 11 hours. Women wrongly believe a Pap smear tests for ovarian cancer, it does NOT. Only knowing and identifying the symptoms can aide in early detection. Currently, 75 per cent of women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the advanced stages and don’t live beyond five years. And yet, if diagnosed early, the majority of those women can survive. With one in 77 Australian women developing ovarian cancer in their lifetime, and one woman dying from this devastating disease every 11 hours, the message to all Australian women is clear - learn the symptoms of ovarian cancer today – Don’t leave it until the 11th hour! For women concerned about symptoms, download a free symptom diary from Ovarian Cancer Australia’s website to track what they are experiencing to better communicate their symptoms to their GP. Teal is the international colour representing ovarian cancer and Ovarian Cancer Australia’s awareness and fundraising initiatives to fund support programs to help women and their families whose lives have been tragically touched by the disease include: . Afternoon Teal™ and Touch of Teal events . Teal Ribbon Day – Wednesday, February 23 . Teal Ribbons on sale for $2.00 Throughout February, purchase tax-deductible Teal Ribbons from Chemmart, and Napoleon Perdis stores, Ovarian Cancer Australia or, when you book a package or tickets to see a concert or show anywhere in Australia during February through showbiz.com.au, Showbiz will purchase your Teal Ribbon on your behalf.

Transport Levy

Community gardens

My office has received a number of enquiries this week regarding the Public Transport Levy charge on your Rates Notices, so I thought it would be of benefit to explain again the rationale behind this levy. Council made a commitment to work with the State Government to improve public transport on the Coast. This is in line with what we believe to be a priority issue for many residents. To this end we also recognise for the Sunshine Coast to achieve any significant results, we needed to be at the table with some funding to partner the Government - thus the levy was introduced to all property owners and ratepayers. Council has been working very hard with state agencies to work on initiatives such as Council Cabs, Flexibus and Bus Services to areas not currently serviced by Public Transport. Whilst not all townships in the Glasshouse Country region were included in the first year of the Levy, this is a growing service, with new options to be added in this second year of the levy and with Council’s 11/12 budget. When these final details are bedded down and the announcements and timetables completed, I hope most residents will see some value for their $20.00 Levy. In the meantime if you have any feedback or would like to see your particular area included in a service, such as Council Cabs, it is important that you provide this feedback for consideration. Please email councilcabs@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or write to Council Cabs, Sunshine Coast Council, Locked Bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre, Qld 4560.

Development application

Gymnasium Application Beerwah A planning application has been lodged with council for a Material Change of Use to establish a gymnasium at the rear of the florist in Simpson Street, Beerwah. This is the building which was once the Community Hall for the township. The business, Fitness Matters, has a gross floor area of 220m2. The car parks for this site are shared through a reciprocal access easement with the adjoining site. The application number is MCU10/2132.

Council recently endorsed the Draft Community Gardens Policy and Draft Community Gardens Guidelines which will give a clear framework in which to operate and make decisions about the establishment and management of community gardens. It clearly outlines council’s commitment to managing community garden enquiries through an ‘Enquiry Management Framework’ and provides guidance towards appropriate site selection through the ‘Community Garden Site Selection Criteria’. This means that residents will soon have the support needed to plan and establish places where people can come together to grow fresh food, meet like minded people and know that they are contributing to their community. I think this is a great concept, particularly with the number of natural disasters and the rising costs of food it makes community gardens the way to go. If you would like more information, please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 5475 7272.

Pathway update - McCarthy Road, Maleny

While wet weather prolonged the extension of the culverts on McCarthy Road, works to extend this recreational concrete pathway along McCarthy Road toward Mountain View Road have progressed well.

Helping not-for-profit organisations maintain sporting fields

Council has just adopted a new three-year Sports Field Maintenance Funding Program which will contribute towards helping not-for-profit organisations throughout the region maintain sporting fields commencing 2011/2012. Under the program, 70 per cent of maintenance costs will be provided by council to the successful eligible sporting organisations to help them meet district competition standards. The program was developed to provide support to these groups, particularly the smaller mum and dad and volunteer operations, which have been struggling to raise the money needed to maintain the fields. I have strongly lobbied council for years for equitable access for funding to assist our local sports and community groups in their endeavours to maintain their grounds, so I am delighted to announce this program. A comprehensive awareness raising campaign will start soon to ensure sporting organisations understand the program and application process.

The Dirt with James Ashby Marketing and PR Manager, Gowinta Farms

To import or not to import?

The debate over whether to import fruit and vegetables from other countries hit headlines again recently after supermarkets were left partially bare of fresh produce during Queensland’s flood crisis. The shortage saw an immediate spike in prices and left customers wondering how long the kink in supply would last, prompting questions over the feasibility of importing fresh produce from other countries. Australia, given its fertile soil and varied climate from state to state, has very little reason to import fresh produce. There’s not much this nation can’t grow. In fact, we produce more than enough fresh fruit and vegetables to export to other nations, except our costs far exceed most Asian countries on labour and America, who are largely responsible for new genetically modified (GM) crops that reduce waste, giving higher yields. Labour costs in the Australian agricultural industry range between $15.00 - $17.46 per hour. Add four weeks holidays, five days sick leave, five public holidays each year and nine per cent superannuation to the mix. Compare that with the hourly rate of the Philippines which threatens many of our agricultural industries, at $4.50 - $5.58 per hour. Thailand pays just $97.76 per month (approx 0.61 cents an hour) and Bali pays a mere $82.90 per month (approx 0.51 cents an hour). American states like California, pays a minimum wage of just $8.75 per hour, almost half our minimum hourly rate. No wonder the cost of importing fruit and vegetables sounds so enticing. The spike in produce prices we saw recently was a case of ‘short term pain, for long term gain’. Let’s think logically about the repercussions imported fresh produce will have on our economy and bio security. Your support to halt imports will have long term benefits if we make the right choice now and into the future. ‘Support Australian produce’. GOWINTA FARMS www.gowinta.com.au

Living Well with Bob McLean The Glasshouse Country Festival is definitely on track to be a truly successful event with planning going full steam ahead. The festival is a great opportunity for all of us that live in and love Glasshouse Country to celebrate and enjoy the unique delights the area offers. It is also a chance for us to showcase our talents to visitors, tourists and people thinking of moving to the area. Our plan at this stage is to launch the event at the annual Sustainability and Garden Expo on May 29, with events running through until Friday, June 10. As the railway has been an important part of our area’s history, one of the highlights will be the proposed Heritage Steam Train visit from Brisbane on Saturday, June 4. The train will drop off and pick up passengers at Glass House Mountains and Landsborough, where they can then link in with the ‘Kero Lamp Tour’, showcasing the rich and diverse history of our local Glasshouse Country communities. To make the Heritage Steam Train visit a reality we still need some corporate sponsorship, and on the topic of corporate sponsorship there are a number of opportunities for businesses that would like to get involved. To discuss, contact me at info@glasshousecountryfestival.com.au or phone 0427 606 240. A high priority of the festival is to engage with youth across all Glasshouse Country communities and promote special events for their involvement. Some of the proposed events are Schools Spectacular concert, Wanna Be Deadly Touch Footy tournament, bush walking, roller derby demonstration, skate park demo and tournament, and traditional games. While the event schedule is tracking along well, we are happy to add other events into the program, so if you are involved in a group hosting an event / activity between May 29 and June 10, register it with us and we can help promote it. Just visit the festival website and register to get the ball rolling. The festival will only be a success with community involvement. The best way to keep up to date with what activities have been finalised is to keep a look out at our website is www.glasshousecountryfestival.com.au www.glasshousecountryfestival.com.au

New Year resolution time It’s February already and perhaps there’s a lot of well-intentioned New Year resolutions out there that have not been implemented. If any of you men decided to get involved in an enjoyable social activity – like a male singing group – it’s not too late! As a matter of fact the timing’s perfect, as the Sunshine Statesmen prepare to launch their popular, free, voice-coaching program for men again this year. According to Chorus President, Tony Eccles, the program is a proven winner. “Last year we had 20 participants and most of them continued their involvement in singing. Ability to read music is helpful but certainly not essential as the music is all on training CDs,” Tony said. “On the first night, each participant will be allocated to a voice part, be it tenor, lead, baritone or bass, according to their natural range, and assigned a mentor from the ranks of the Sunshine Statesmen.” Tony said that the only cost is a one-off $10.00 for the CD and sheet music. The obligation-free program will run for six consecutive Wednesday nights, commencing on March 9. The venue is the Buderim Uniting Church hall, corner of King Street and Gloucester Road, Buderim, and the regular start time will be 7.30pm - 9.00pm. However, participants are advised to be at the hall on the first night by 7.00pm to get the administration out of the way and to start singing! The final night, April 13, will take the form of a free President’s Concert where families can come along and listen to the result of some well-fulfilled New Year resolutions. For further details or advising of intended attendance, Sunshine Statesmen ring Paul Minnis on 5445 6497 or Bruce Laming on 5444 2098.

Pastor Thelie Hobbs PraiseHouse Church Well, it’s that time of year again, when the shopping centres fill their shelves with hearts, roses, balloons, cards, chocolates, and cute, fluffy toy animals that sing songs of love. It’s that one day that people show their love for someone special, but it’s important to show little acts of love and kindness the other 364 days of the year. It’s often the simplest things – not the most expensive or elaborate – that mean the most. I personally can do without a dancing gorilla singing ‘Love Me Tender’ but the things that mean the most to me all-year-through are the hugs and sloppy kisses from my grandbabies, random visits and texts from my children who just want to say ‘love you mum’; coffee with friends, my dog happy to see me; or hearing the sound of my mum’s voice who lives 2,000km away. My husband and I have been married

for over 30 years and bless him; he still likes to make me happy. He isn’t exactly a flower giver but he does other little thoughtful things to show me he cares, like telling me to relax while he cooks dinner, surprising me with breakfast in bed; or opening a door. It means a lot when family and friends think of you, want to spend time with you, share a meal or just talk. You know God tells us in the Bible how much He loves us, is thinking of us and wants to spend time with us. His promise is to never leave or forsake us, to always be there to answer us if we call, day or night. Flowers will die, chocolates get eaten, balloons will pop, the stuffed animals may stop singing and cards get thrown away, but God’s love for us will never pass away. For now there are faith, hope, and love. But of these three, the greatest is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13) Be inspired to find little ways to show your loved ones you truly care for them every day and not just one day!

What type of loan is right for me? For many first time buyers, a basic low interest loan without costly ‘extras’ helps keep interest payments and fees to a minimum.

A good broker can help you to understand the various loan deals that are on offer, explaining the features that can make a big difference to your repayments.

Everybody’s circumstances are different and there are some flexible products out there that might suit you better.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford, publicity officer Members and visitors enjoyed the first meeting for 2011 in the lovely garden of Nessie Pratten. Guest speaker, Theo Beenders, accompanied by wife Rita, were warmly welcomed. Theo is the founder of Theo’s Nursery and gave a small history of starting the nursery. His topic was growing indoor plants, mainly African Violets, Episcia, foliage plants related to African Violets and Tassel Ferns. Theo also showed us a Basket Fern which is a native of this area. Members took advantage of the opportunity to purchase plants from Theo. Coral Beutel presented Theo with a fruit basket for his interesting talk and thanked him for donating plants for the raffle. President John informed members of Myrtle rust, a serious fungal disease, attacking all plants in the Myrtaceae family, which will be a serious problem for bee keepers. After the meeting members enjoyed lunch and a stroll through Nessie’s garden. Next meeting, the AGM, will be on Thursday, February 17 at 9.30am in the Peachester Hall. Flower in season - Frangipani. Please be reminded that subscriptions are now due. Visitors are welcome and we would love to see some new faces on the committee this year. For more information phone 5496 9169.

Starting out or replenishing? Welcome to what I am sure will be a bountiful year, as every year is in a vegetable garden! I will be continuing to pass on my veggie patch news with particular focus on productive gardening to feed the family with limited spare time as my workload grows. This year has started out pretty tragically in the veggie patch. However, I am lucky because I had actually decided to have a break from the garden over Christmas, so I had no real expectations of a good harvest. Low and behold, my expectations were met and what I did have in rotted. Instead of despairing, I’m seeing this all as a great opportunity to start over with a refreshed patch. So whether you are starting out, or your garden just needs a top up, the method that I adopt can be applied to both. It is ‘lasagna layering’, and in my personal opinion is one of the best ways to provide a good year long supply of nutrients cheaply. In summary, my version of ‘lasagna layering’ is where the garden beds are filled predominantly with alternate layers of lucerne mulch, spent mushroom compost and manure as indicated in the diagram. However, if you are just topping up your garden you only need to do the top four layers. When it comes to the manure layer, anything you can get your hands on is great, but generally the nutrient scale from highest to lowest is chook, goat, pig, sheep, horse and then cow. It should also be noted that the higher nutrient rich manures are the most processed by the animal and therefore are less likely to have viable weed seeds.

Lucerne mulch (10 cm) Manure (10 cm) Compost (5 cm) Lucerne mulch (10 cm) Newspaper (5 mm) Each year I do this to replenish my garden and I find the best time to do it is now - at the end of summer. This means that many of the heavy feeding crops such as the last seasonal planting of corn and the winter brassicas have all the nutrients they could desire. All that will be required for your first crop will be the odd bit of lime or dolomite to adjust the pH for different plants and some liquid feeds at crucial times, such as after the broccoli heads are harvested. Once your garden is filled, it helps to leave it settle for about two weeks and then plant seedlings or seeds into pockets of compost. I plan to do some end of season summer plantings now and start focusing on raising winter vegetable seedlings as shown in the table. Vegetable Sweet Corn

Zucchini and Squash Cucumber Beans Cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli Tomatoes

Preparation Plant seeds direct. Once seedlings are 15cm, sprinkle liquid feed and then mound the soil and mulch around the stem. Cut off side shoots or tillers to increase cob quality. Plant seed direct and mulch thickly root zone to protect the shallow roots As above. Can trellis to increase air flow and reduce powdery mildew. Adjust pH to 6.5-7.0. Potash can be applied sparingly to boost potassium levels. Mulch/hill around stems as they grow. Start seeds in punnets for planting out next month. Plant seedling or seed into a pocket filled with compost or seed raising mix. Plant cherry tomatoes around teepee and full sized tomatoes with stakes.

Quantity Block of 12 or more. 4 of each plant 3 plants each month. 20 plants each month. 6 of each every month or two. 4 of each.

Next month I hope to continue to share with you how things are progressing in our backyard…what worked and what went wrong. Everyone should have a go, so what are you waiting for, get up and grow today!

second game. Barefoot bowls started last Friday night where players enjoyed a meal at the Club and a social game under lights in the cool of the evening. Bowls are available at the Club and new players are welcome to come along from 6.00pm. For further information contact Terry little on 0427 721 566. There is also our normal ‘Open Pairs’ night game for club bowlers. The first round of the Super Challenge Competition commenced on Saturday with Cannon Hill defeating Glasshouse 3 rinks to 2 in Section 15. On Sunday, our Section 13 Men’s Team defeated Tewantin 3 rinks to 2 and our Ladies defeated Tewantin 2 rinks to nil. The Ladies’ Fours team was forced to play two extra

ends with the 21st end drawn and the first extra end unable to be determined on a measure by the umpire. Our Glasshouse Ladies finally won by one shot. Overall a great start to the season.

Tennis safety loved by all

With The Australian Tennis Open inspiring many to take to the sport, tennis players can get an advantage via Sports Medicine Australia’s Preventing Tennis Injuries Fact Sheet. Developed with Tennis Australia, the resource encourages players, regardless of skill level, to prepare their bodies for play – to get the most from their game and most importantly avoid injury. The rate of tennis injuries has been calculated at five injuries per 1,000 hours of participation. The most common injuries are to the lower limbs – ankle, knee and thigh. “Every year, once The Australian Tennis Open is over and won, people are inspired to start playing tennis, often without appropriate preparation. Sadly, this is a recipe for injury,” said Sports Medicine Australia’s spokesperson, Dr Anita Green. “However many common tennis injuries can be prevented by undertaking good preparation in the form of hydration, warming up, using appropriate equipment and practising good technique,” said Dr Green. Sports Medicine Australia offers these tips to get prepared and minimise the risk of tennis injury:  Always warm up, stretch and cool down.  Maintain an adequate fitness level. Undertake specific conditioning and training exercises that simulate tennis (i.e. acceleration, deceleration, twisting, turning and stretching).  Seek instruction from a qualified coach to develop correct skills and techniques.  Avoid over-repetition of any one type of shot. Practise a range of strokes including ground strokes, serves, return of serves, overhead smashes and volleys.  Use a racquet suitable for your style of play and physical capabilities.  Check and maintain the playing surface to ensure it is in good condition and free of hazards. A tennis ground checklist can help.  Seek professional advice on footwear.  Be sunsmart to protect Sign on day is Wed 9th Feb for all ages from heat injury. Glasshouse’s strongest man muscles up

Regular readers of GCNews will be familiar with our very own strongman, Tim O’Shea from Beerburrum. Since we last caught up with Tim, he has been very busy maintaining his strength and fitness on his path to claim the title of Australia’s Strongest Man. On Australia Day, January 26, Tim travelled to compete in the Australian Amateur Strongman Championships at Kryal Castle, Ballarat, Victoria, securing third place in the Amateur Heavyweight division. The six events included an overhead medley, a car wheelbarrow, a 290kg deadlift, a 403kg car walk, a keg toss and six Atlas Stones from 110kg to 194kg. His next major event is Australia’s Strongest Man, in Lismore in June. Tim and the 403kg car walk at his most recent competition.

Just for Laughs

A little girl asked her mother, “how did the human race appear?” The mother answered, “God made Adam and Eve and they had children, and so all mankind was made.” Two days later the girl asked her father the same question. The father answered, “many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved.”

The confused girl returned to her mother and said, “mum how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and dad said they developed from monkeys?” The mother answered, “Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his.” C. McIntyre, Beerwah
