Hi Everyone Hi Everyone You may have noticed in last week’s paper – there were a couple of mentions of the new GCNews website going live from Thursday – well I can report back that all went well. This new website is a brave step forward for us - after almost 25 years of printing our newspaper we have finally ventured into the world of publishing an electronic version of the paper, which will be available each week. Over the years we often have feedback from readers that they pass on their copies of the paper (once they have read them cover to cover) to their children, friends or old neighbours who have moved out of the area but still like to keep up-to-date with what is happening locally.

To make it easier for those outside the area to stay informed, we will be providing an option for people who wish to have a free on-line subscription. All they need to do is register their email address with us, and each week, when the latest edition is online, they will receive an email with a link to it - could it be any easier than that? Mountains of support for flood victims Tireless volunteer and charity worker Helen Moon feels fortunate than most – she’s survived a number of natural disasters, including Cyclone Tracy, which devastated Darwin in 1974, and she’s now on a mission to help others. So it’s only natural she’s the driving force behind a local linen drive for flood victims.

The linen drive had only been operating for three hours when GCNews arrived at the Hall last Wednesday to take this photo. Bags of generously donated towels, sheets, blankets, and doonas had already been stockpiled, in a massive show of support. Meanwhile, down at Beerwah’s Resource Recovery Centre, Trish and her staff have agreed to donate an impressive $7,000 to the Grantham State School P and C Association to cover the cost of student’s text books and fees for this year. On the weekend, they were also matching dollar for dollar the monies raised through the Recycle Markets at both Beerwah and Witta. This money was to be sent to the community of Murphy’s Creek. The Commonwealth Bank at Beerwah is also lending their support, selling raffle tickets for the chance to win one of two signed cricket bats, and a hat signed by Michael Hussey, donated by the Australian Cricket team. The funds raised will go to Murphy Creek State School. Tickets are $2.00 each, or three for $5.00, and will be available for sale until Friday, February 4. The linen drive, operating out of the Beerwah CWA Hall in Simpson Street, commenced last Wednesday, and will remain open for 10 working days, from 10.00am - 4.00pm. The use of the hall and its facilities has been generously donated by the Beerwah CWA, while it is understood that Greyhound Bus Services will collect and deliver the linen to CWA Halls to areas north, such as Gympie, Maryborough and Bundaberg.

Local’s generosity knows no bounds

Young masterchefs support flood appeal

When it comes to supporting a good cause, it seems our local community are willing to go to just about any length to contribute. Earlier this month, normal blood donation services were affected and did not operate from Monday to Wednesday, however when they resumed at Beerwah Marketplace on the Thursday, opening two hours earlier than normal, collection staff were run off their feet. “During this time (from 11.30am - 6.30pm), we had the most tremendous response from local generously given by Glasshouse residents has the residents coming in and as a result we didn’t stop power to save nearly 300 lives! for all of those 10 hours. As soon as the flood disaster struck Queensland, one of Eden’s residents, Norma Malcolm, approached lifestyle staff to ask if a collection could be taken up to assist those in need. Containers were set up and placed in Eden’s reception area and in communities. Connie Cameron from the Coochin community then took up the challenge to make sure everyone was aware of the collection and encouraged staff and other residents to give generously. Norma and Connie were both on hand to give a donation of $257.25 directly to Rotary Club representative Trevor Taylor, who was happy to confirm that 100 per cent of the money would

go directly to communities in need. When thanked by staff, Norma said she wouldn’t have been able to sleep knowing something wasn’t being done.

Viv, Libby and Ingrid Three young Landsborough girls have taken matters into their own hands, and spent the last weeks of their school holidays cooking up a storm and selling their wares to raise funds for the Queensland Flood Relief Appeal. Eight-yearold Vivienne Fitzpatrick, Ingrid Fitzpatrick, 11 years, and Libby Chester, also 11 years, cooked up muffins, biscuits, quiches and fudge, with their tasty efforts managing to raise more than $300.00 in the Landsborough area. The girls did all the cooking themselves, and sold their baked goodies in the Landsborough Pharmacy and around the main shopping area.

Celebrating our newest citizens

As we gather to celebrate Australia Day, for some, today is cause for a double celebration, as they also mark the day by becoming Australian citizens. Sunshine Coast Council will this week host an event at Kings Beach, Caloundra, where 165 residents from across the coast, including three from our own area, will become Australian citizens. Beerwah’s Betty Barry came out to Australia from Holland in 1957 when she was only six years old. Now, more than 50 years later, she feels the time is finally right to complete her journey, by officially recognising her adopted ‘Australian’ status. “While I am proud of my heritage, I am equally proud to call myself an Australian, and am really looking forward to officially becoming an Australian citizen at today’s ceremony,” Betty said. Having married an Australian and raised her family in our country, Betty said the time finally felt right to take the final step of becoming a citizen. “I love living here on the Sunshine Coast, and now that my parents have passed away, I don’t have the same ties to my homeland anymore, so I am really excited and glad to be taking on the responsibility of calling myself a citizen.” Betty said one of the things she was most looking forward to was being able to vote. “Anyone who knows me will tell you how opinionated I am, so I am really looking forward to having the right to vote come election time,” Betty said. Betty said she will be celebrating the day with a traditional Aussie barbeque at the beach, surrounded by friends and family. Down the road at Glenview, for Louise and Adrian Brocklehurst, formerly from Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom, the timing couldn’t have proven better. Having just welcomed their second child into the world earlier this month, and their residential visa expiring, the pair felt it was time for the whole family to officially become Australians. “There was never any doubt we would become citizens at some point – I fell in love with the country more than 15 years ago when I came out on a working holiday,” Adrian, who runs his own excavating business, said. “When Louise and I moved here in 2006, nearly five years to the day, we knew it would become our home, and with both our children being born here, we feel like we’re the odd ones out,” he said. And just like Betty and her family, Louise and Adrian are looking forward to celebrating their special day with a barbeque and a few drinks with friends and neighbours.

Beerwah local Jasmine Matheson feels she knows exactly how the thousands of flood victims throughout our nation are feeling at the moment. Last week she went through a similarly devastating experience, when a house fire engulfed her home, and she lost all her possessions. “I can’t believe it has happened,” said Jasmine, who has lived in the local community for the past two years. “I’m still in shock; I just can’t believe I’ve lost everything I own.” Fortunately, Jasmine wasn’t home at the time the fire started, which according to the police report, was caused by an electrical fault in her bedroom. After being contacted by a friend who let her know that her house was alight, Jasmine rushed home to find firefighters extinguishing the last of the flames, which destroyed everything in her rented housing commission home in Blackbutt Street. “I know how the people who’ve lost everything in the floods must feel; my heart goes out to them. “I just simply can’t replace everything that I’ve lost – photographs of my children when they were younger, a collection of wind charms that my son has given me over the years. That hurts the most, but I just have to gather the strength to

Temporarily living with her son in Caboolture, Jasmine has been advised she will be able to move into new accommodation in Beerwah in coming weeks. “I am grateful that I will be able to move into a housing commission unit in the next couple of weeks, however I’m on a disability support pension, and with all the charity agencies already stretched because of the floods, I am struggling to be able to replace the basics, like a fridge and washing machine. “I know there are a lot of good hearted people in Beerwah, and if anyone can help me out, I would be so grateful,” Jasmine said. Starting Strong is a free program for expectant mothers and mums with babies under 12 months which has been developed to support and nurture the transition from pregnancy to motherhood. The program promotes secure attachment between mother and baby by providing new mothers with information, practical experience and opportunities to celebrate the experience of motherhood. Over the duration of the program running over eight weeks for two hours one day a week, you will gain a deeper understanding and the skills to promote a secure attachment with your child, explore the many facets of motherhood in a nurturing environment, share experiences and develop support networks and friendships. Local actor’s career ‘shifts’ up a gear

The acting career of our local rising star, actor Daniel George, has stepped up a notch following confirmation that his first series, Shifters has been picked up by an Australian network. Daniel, from Glass House, said although he can’t name the station, he could confirm that filming will start on 26 episodes of Shifters later this year. In other big news for the talented young actor, he has also scored his first paid acting gig, a feature length documentary called ‘The Digger’, which

will screen on Foxtel’s History Channel. With filming set to get underway next month, Daniel said it would be good to play the role of a ‘real’ person instead of a character. “It’s going to be different to try and get into the head of a soldier, it will be an interesting challenge,” he said. And it doesn’t stop there, with Daniel also hoping to raise enough funds this year to start filming his web series, Levasque.

As part of his fundraising efforts, Daniel is hosting another trivia night this Saturday, January 29 at the Glasshouse Mountains Community Hall. Monies raised will go towards funding the production of his web series, while monies raised from the raffle on the night will go towards another of Daniel’s passions, the RSPCA shelter at Fairfield, another victim of the floods which earlier this month reaped havoc in the state’s south east. The trivia night kicks off from 6.30pm, with teams of up to eight people. There’s heaps of great prizes up for grabs, and tickets are only $10.00 per person. National champ prepares for world barrel battle It might not be the big business that it is in the States, but if Landsborough’s Michelle Moloney has her way, national barrel horse racing will hopefully become the next big thing in the rodeo events across the country. Thirty-one-year old Michelle heads off to Georgia in the United States later this year to represent Australia in the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) world finals, and after only two years competing, she remains quietly confident. With a love of horses and having grown up surrounded by them, Michelle’s progress and achievements in the sport of barrel racing, a timed rodeo event, over the past two years, has been nothing short of spectacular. It was only in December that she learned that she had achieved a life long dream, of being able to represent her country in the sport, after taking out three major national titles during 2010, and she’s still pinching herself. Losing weight is all about energy in versus energy used up. But for those keen to lose weight in Anita Cassidy’s Glasshouse Weight Loss Challenge, it’s more about putting knowledge into action. Anita says she has seen many people desperate to shed the kilos, but her Weight Loss Challenge is one with a twist, as participants don’t do any exercise. “We teach people how to make better food choices and how to keep the weight off by maintaining healthy eating for life,” says Anita. In the sixth Glasshouse Challenge, Beerwah resident Irene Joyce lost 12kg to take out the first place cash prize, narrowly beating strong competition from Mooloolah’s Brian Dunstan and Michelle Moore from Beerwah, who lost 22.6kg combined. When asked how she had won the challenge, Irene said you have to be motivated and ready to lose weight to initially commit to the 10 weeks, but being answerable to the scales and talking to other people motivates you. “It’s all about using the information that you receive to eat sensibly and I found that writing down what I ate each week kept me honest,” she said. The course teaches a different nutritional topic each week and while the group learns about exercise as well, the meetings are primarily about making healthy food and living choices. “Many people don’t realise that 80 per cent of achieving permanent weight loss is about nutrition while 20 per cent is exercise,” Anita said. The 10 week course costs $39.00, which funds the prize kitty shared between the four people that have lost the most weight and centimetres at the end. “We have put a structure in place so people treat it seriously and to make sure everyone gets behind each other for support. Although it can get quite competitive, most of all it’s sociable and a lot of fun.” Anita starts her next Challenge on Wednesday, February 2. Community Group Updates Beerwah CWA

With the horrible flood news throughout Queensland, the Beerwah Branch will hold a monster Cent Sale on February 24, with the proceeds going to the Flood Crisis Fund. All money raised or donated will be distributed 100 per cent in the form of store credit which the recipient can use for essential items such as food, clothing or fuel. Members of the public can contribute to this fund, and receive a tax deductable receipt. Donations can be sent direct to QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund @ 89-95 Gregory Terrace, Brisbane, 4000. Members are meeting early this year, on January 27, with morning tea at 9.30am and meeting to follow. Members will tell us about their first job, this will be an interesting topic. Branches in Queensland last year raised $18,644.00 for prostate cancer. Another $5,541.00 was given to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This year’s appeal is for ‘Young Care’, a pressing need for those young persons who need care, but not as residents in an aged care facility. Recently QCQA Branches strongly objected to Home Mail Deliveries being stopped and replaced by central mail centres. This would affect a lot of people in this area. A lot of people are unaware of how Hoy is played. It is a lot easier than the usual Bingo. Thirteen cards are given from a pack to each player, then set aside when that card is called. The first player who runs out of cards calls Hoy. Participants each bring along three prizes and these are played for, until all prizes are won, these being $2.00 - $3.00 value. A guarantee is given that everyone takes home at least one prize. Do come along, the first Tuesday of each month at 9.00am. This is a fellowship morning for the stay at home people. The Beerwah branch was formed in 1947 and the present building was erected in 1948. With kitchen modifications, seating and tables for 50 people, and situated in the centre of town, it is thanks to the pioneers of this branch for their foresight. What price safety?

With the new school year almost upon us, I want to remind residents of the great work done by chaplains locally in our schools. I have had the pleasure of meeting with a number of local chaplains and they are always enthusiastic and excited about the great opportunities they have in guiding and helping our children and youths. Since launching the Government support programme for Chaplains, they have been a great support system for teachers who can now better focus on the education of their students, for parents, and for the young people themselves. They play a valuable role, supporting students and school communities by offering pastoral care and guidance across religious denominations and beliefs. The Coalition has committed to ensuring that the National School Chaplaincy Programme continues operation until 2014. I’m sure any support that can be given to our local chaplains will be greatly appreciated and of great benefit.

Australia Day

It is great to see local residents gearing up to celebrate Australia Day again this year with such enthusiasm. There are a number of events being held around the region and I encourage local residents to get out and join in the celebrations. I am fortunate with my wife Inge to be able to attend a number of events, including two citizenship ceremonies at which I have the immense pleasure of conducting the ceremonies and welcoming officially the new citizens. It is great to be able to play a role in their important and significant day. It has been encouraging in past years to receive letters of thanks from new citizens at these events for making their day memorable and special. I am also conducting my 12th annual Fisher Community Australia day Awards event, which this year will present awards to some 25 individuals and groups who have worked hard over recent years to make their community a better place. This is always a very positive event that is enjoyed by all who attend and I’m looking forward to the ceremony this year. I remind readers if they know of any local residents who do some great work for their community, to consider nominating them for an award for next years. Nominations are open from now on for 2012.

The Caloundra Coast Guard has been operating for over 30 years. In that time they have saved many lives and property whilst the volunteers have placed themselves at risk on more than one occasion. I recently spoke to one of these heroes who told me that at least twice he thought he was a goner. He vividly recalls facing six metre waves and asking himself why he does it. He told me he knew the answer - he wanted to give back to his community for all the Sunshine Coast had given him. The Caloundra Coast Guard has three boats, the largest of which must be replaced in 2012 at a cost of around $300,000.00. Modern technology keeps lives safe and constant training sharpens the skills of the crew. Yet the lease of the premises occupied by the Coast Guard expired two years ago and despite their best endeavours they have not been able to obtain a new lease. You have to ask about priorities of certain people. There are 5,000 registered boats in the Caloundra area alone and that number swells during the holiday seasons. If the issue of the lease can’t be resolved is the future in doubt?

Beerwah Sportsground access project

Construction on the Beerwah Sportsground Access project started with the placement of site sheds late last year, unfortunately since then we have been unable to carry out construction works due the heavy rain fall events that the coast recently received. Although the lower land within the sportsground is still a little wet, Council is continuing to move forward on the project and next week will see all vegetation (within the construction footprint) being removed and stripping of the grass and topsoil from the southern end through to the creek. All culverts have been manufactured and are awaiting delivery, and all the necessary permits have now been approved and received. Last week I visited the site and met the workmen. They are the star crew who recently completed the Tooway Bridge project in Caloundra, and have now been redeployed to the Beerwah Sportsground project. All we need now is a spell of dry weather!

Development approval, GlassHouse

Planning approval has been given to the application by Beerburrum estates Pty Ltd for a community title subdivision, Railway Parade, Glasshouse Mountains. Ten small lots with a large community common area have been approved with the lots arranged in a U configuration and internal driveway. The application was Impact Assessable and six submissions were received. These submissions largely focused on perceived loss of character for the township because of more compact development. The ultimate built form with the estate will be single detached house and single storey; no concerns have been raised by referral agencies. The land in question has a history of development interest and in 2006 an application was submitted to council for 11 Units but later withdrawn. The site is mostly clear with some “of concern” vegetation adjoining which is protected and unable to be cleared. Lot sizes range from 375m2 up to 592m2. The development is located within a few minutes walk of the train station and the main shopping centre.

I personally know of many people and even families that have just picked up tools and gone to where they are most needed to give others a helping hand. I have personally travelled and visited most of the area’s affected in Division 5 and will continue to support those in need. Unfortunately the devastation is not going to go away over night or even within the next month or so, it will take a long term commitment from the whole of the community to re-establish some of the homes and facilities that have been lost. I am happy to advise of the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program, established following the recent widespread floods. In the North Coast Region, eligible sport and recreation organisations that have suffered damage from flooding, wind or heavy rainfall within the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay local government areas are currently eligible to apply for financial assistance. The Program will provide one-off funding to assist incorporated not-forprofit sport and recreation organisations to re-establish their facilities and activities which support local participation. Two categories of assistance are available: (I) Grants of up to $5, 000 for replacement of operational items such as sport and recreation equipment, white goods and canteen items. (ii) Grants of up to $20, 000 to assist with capital works projects to repair sport and recreation infrastructure which was damaged as a result of recent winds or flooding. My name is Deanne Pitt, director of Beerwah Magic Trees Early Learning Centre. Like everyone I have been very distressed by the devastation of the floods and what the people in all of these areas are dealing with, including the loss of loved ones, pets and cherished memories, as well as homes and livelihoods. This tragedy has motivated our childcare centre to hold a Furniture Drive for donations of big household items such as fridges, freezers, TV’s, lounges, dining tables, beds etc for the flood victims, particularly from Goodna to Ipswich. Our centre believes that big household items are just some of the things that these flood affected families are going to need to help get their lives back on track - once the clean up is done. We have all been watching the footage on TV, feeling helpless. Sadly at this time of year some people don’t even have $1.00 spare to donate or the time / transport to physically help out with the clean up. But I am sure that almost everyone could donate at least one piece of furniture or electrical goods that they may not need. What is such a small sacrifice for us can be a huge helping hand for these families left with nothing. If our community was hit with something this devastating, I can only imagine how bad it would affect us and how much help we would need to start to rebuild our lives. A number of my friends have been affected by the floods in Brisbane and have lost everything (finding their insurance will not cover them). We have been down helping in Brisbane and it is just devastating and heartbreaking to say the least. I am collecting donations (all household items for the family and any pet related items) for my 14

friends (we know about four families affected), and I am happy to collect and take to them when the time is right for them (i.e. when their house is getting back on track). Whatever they don't want or need I am donating the other items to relavant charity organisations who are assisting flood victims with donations. I am seeking donations of household items anything from furniture (in reasonable order) to kitchen items; children's toys; food and items for pets. I am also happy to assist with coordinating of getting any cooked or baked goodies to affected people, workers e.g. firemen etc, volunteers (I have read about a number of church groups etc doing this also - they probably have the distribution channels set up well now). Wivenhoe no flood saviour

I experienced the 1974 floods in Brisbane and was later assured that the construction of the Wivenhoe Dam would see an end to major flooding in Ipswich and the Brisbane suburbs into the future. To allow the Wivenhoe to reach a level that required the release of millions of megalitres into the Brisbane River, on top of the massive rainfall, must surely be seen as totally irresponsible by the bureaucrats that now run our water infrastructure. Knowing that the dam was at 100 per cent earlier in the 2010 year, as well as Somerset Dam, and that the Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting a wetter than normal summer rain season, the Wivenhoe should have been releasing water, at a controlled flow, well before the recent heavy rain event. By reducing the Wivenhoe to a level around 2550 per cent would have allowed for catchment run off as well as overflow from Somerset. With the Wivenhoe at almost 200 per cent there was no room for manoeuvring and the release of water was essential to maintain the integrity of the dam wall. So Ipswich and Brisbane flooding can be laid squarely at the lack of foresight by those highly paid individuals in charge. Could it be that greed, associated with the current high price of water, was a major factor in ‘harvesting’ all that water? I wonder if they are prepared to accept

Government cutbacks placing our health at risk

A recent visit to Beerwah Pathology was quite disturbing, patients walking out unable to pay for services that are no longer covered by Medicare. It appears that the government are playing with OUR Medicare. Take an interest in what this Labor Government is doing to us and Australia in general. We are all getting older, fact of life, however, in so doing, things start to break down, such as our bodies, health etc. Medicare covers a great deal of things for us, or should I say, USED TO. Not a fact anymore and of course, this will just be the start. People are foregoing tests for cervical cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, cholesterol and lipids. Wake up, these are the things that kill you. Should you agree with our Government, then you will be assisting them greatly, it is a well known fact that we, the oldies, are living longer, hence longer Pension monies required and hospitalisation, so more hospitals and beds required, plus doctors and nurses, ambulances and on it goes. Cut back on pathology testing, investigations are just a start, the roller coaster starts slowly and then starts gathering speed. Do yourselves a favour, call in and enquire as to what is happening, take a copy of their brochure and fill out and send to your local member of federal parliament. Rest and play is the message to parents With the return to school this week, Queensland Health has issued a reminder to parents of the recommended sleep and physical activity levels for children. Sleep deprivation can lead to fatigue, learning and concentration difficulties. Children who do not get enough sleep may display symptoms including moodiness and temper tantrums. Queensland Health’s Director of Preventative Health, Dr Kevin Lambkin said sleep is just as important as water to the human body, but most of us are not getting enough and is particularly important for children to perform well at school. “Sleep deprivation affects children different to adults. Adults tend to slow down when they are tired. Children on the other hand, tend to speed up with increased irritability, over activity and hyperactive behaviour,” Dr Lambkin said. How much sleep is enough? • Primary school children – 10 hours • Teenagers – nine to 10 hours • Adults – eight hours Dr Lambkin said just as important for children is being physically active every day. “Many leisure activities that are popular with children, such as watching television and playing computer games, involve very little physical activity. Many children are also driven to school

and other places rather than walking or riding a bike,” Dr Lambkin said. “In Queensland, one in five children exceeded the recommended maximum of two hours of screen viewing for entertainment each day and only one in three children walked or rode a bike to school. “Children are encouraged to participate in unstructured physical activities such as free play in the backyard or playground, and riding a bike or walking. “Structured physical activities outside of school and at school are also important, such as dance, club sport and physical education.” Dr Lambkin said one of the best ways for your child to be physically active every day is to ride a bike or walk to school. “If you live too far away from school to walk or ride a bike, try parking a block away and walking the rest of the way to school with your child,” Dr Lambkin said. “This will provide quality child-parent time as well as provide health benefits for both you and your child.” How much physical activity is required? • Children under five – actively play for at least three hours a day • Children over five and adolescents – at least one hour of moderate to vigorous

Big hearts embrace cupcakes for sweet cause

The team at Westpac Beerwah took part in Big Red Heart Day last week to raise money to help people and their communities recover and rebuild in the wake of the Queensland floods. They got behind the day and demonstrated that the people of Queensland and Australia are standing together and supporting each other to help those who have been affected by this disaster. Manager of Westpac Beerwah Rosemary Lloyd said that Big Red Heart Day, which was celebrated by all 600 Westpac Branches in Australia, on Thursday, January 20, reflected the company value of acting with integrity, as well as symbolising giving and a sense of caring. Rosemary said all the staff at the Beerwah branch supported the day by selling cup cakes and their signature ‘piggy’ money boxes, raising a grand total of $1,316.20 thanks to the generosity of locals.

Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser. Look at areas which have been saturated with the rains – they may need some underground drainage to take the water away. It will help prevent the soil from souring and from fungal diseases. Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself if you wish. Sew broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April. To treat lawn grubs, try sprinkling the area with a little laundry powder, and then water it in. The grubs will come to the surface and the birds will eat them.

Red Azolla is a common floating native water fern. It is distinguished by having small (10 - 30mm) ferny leaves which can be bright green, turning a red colour when in full sun. The roots are fine and relatively short (10 - 40mm). In most water bodies, azolla is not an issue, but it can cause problems by blocking pump inlets and filters and limiting recreation use of dams. The prolific growth can also be considered an aesthetic nuisance in ornamental ponds and dams. The plant can double its leaf area in seven days under good growing conditions. A rare but invaluable commodity Something that I find really intriguing about us humans is that peace is a rare commodity in our lives. I am not talking about ‘world peace’. I am talking about the sort of peace that encompasses who we are as people and how we live. Peace is something that I endeavour to have in my life, sometimes I get it, a lot of the time I don’t – and I miss the point and I get bogged down with things that don’t matter and I start to stress. Maybe you relate to this? I remember one particular day when my wife and I had a lot going on at once. I started to feel overwhelmed and walked out of the house. I found myself walking around in the backyard saying “God, help us here, we are struggling with this stuff…” and eventually I sat down on the grass behind our shed. I could feel my heart pumping, my mind racing. As I sat down I was thinking about all the stuff I had to do and the obstacles that seemed to loom around my wife and I. I started to look at my surroundings. It then occurred to me that I didn’t think I’d ever sat down here at all over the last four years. I noticed all the tall trees in front of me; the

breeze was gently pushing its way through the branches and leaves. I started to hear birds and insects, they were happily doing their thing. I looked down at the lawn and I began to notice ants scurrying about busily, doing whatever it is that ants do. As I was looking at all this movement and sound, I just felt the pressure come off. Maybe this is why people get into camping, kayaking, fishing, surfing and hiking etc. I took a deep breath and started praying again, but differently this time. “God I know you are with me, thank you for being with me. I know you love me and want to take care of me and my family. Thank you for all the ways you have blessed my family.” After praying, I just felt that I needed to stay there and just sit. So I did. I just sat there against the shed and breathed. It was so good. After about 10 minutes, I got up and slowly walked back to the house to help my wife with the kids. As you think about it now, I am sure you can see how peace is important. You know what it’s like when you meet someone who has a genuine peace. God is pretty passionate about peace and it is mentioned many times in the bible. Psalm 29 verse 11 says ‘The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.’

Peachester History Committee

An Important Bridge

The Stanley River at Peachester is normally a quiet and unremarkable stream. Travellers who pass through the township probably barely notice the river, and almost certainly take the bridge for granted. It is only during ‘severe weather events’ like the recent flooding rains that everyone – local residents and visitors alike – remembers the importance of the Stanley River Bridge. The present bridge was constructed in 1968, with a higher concrete structure improving on the timber bridge which had been built in 1923. This copes with most fluctuations in the river height; however during prolonged heavy rain the water sometimes rises higher than the bridge and flows strongly over the road on the western approach. Fortunately, because of the proximity to the source, the river at Peachester rises and falls quickly, so a flood at the bridge seldom lasts longer than a few hours. However for those hours the bridge and the road are dangerous and impassable; and we are reminded that the bridge is an important east-west communication link.

Peachester Bridge Opened The Stanley River Bridge at Peachester was officially opened last Saturday by the Chairman of the Shire Council (Councillor John Tytherleigh). The bridge was gaily decked with flags and bunting, and the ceremony was witnessed by a large assemblage. Councillor Tytherleigh, in his speech, briefly outlined the history of the bridge, and stated that the original estimate was £759/14/-, and the cost to the ratepayers was a little over £800. Peachester residents could congratulate themselves on the fact that the solid timbers used in the building of the bridge were grown in the vicinity. Mr Owen Jones, A.M.I.C.E., Councillor Burgess, Mr F. Warwick, Councillor B. Bryce, and the Shire Clerk (Mr H. Layt) also addressed the meeting. The ceremony of declaring the bridge open was then performed by Mrs W. A. Grigor, Mrs F. Warwick, and Miss Ivy Bryce. Over 70 persons sat down to an ‘al fresco’ tea, and afterwards children’s, men’s, ladies’, and boys’ races were held.

Volunteers needed to help adults learn to read and write Sunshine Coast Council’s Adult Literacy Program is recruiting volunteers from across the region to tutor adults in literacy skills. Manager, Learning Communities, Ross Duncan said training for these valuable voluntary roles is offered free as part or Council’s literacy programs and provides participants with the skills to help others achieve something important in their life. “Becoming a volunteer adult literacy tutor can be a very rewarding experience,” Mr Duncan said. “Trained tutors provide invaluable support and assistance to adults learning to read and write in a welcoming, friendly and non-judgemental environment. The volunteer training is funded by the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
