elcome to our second ‘incorporating Maleny News’ edition of Glasshouse Country News. Just wanted to say thanks for all the positive feedback we have received from the Maleny community since the first edition.

It is always nice when people let you know that they like what you do, and suggest interesting story ideas, or news tips about what is happening locally.

For us we really like to make sure that nearly everything we include is about what is happening on our side of the Bruce Highway.

This often surprises people on the coast – who can’t understand why we wouldn’t want to run their stories (when all the other coast

We’re also starting the ‘Maleny News’ as a monthly collaboration with the Glasshouse Country News.

After Christmas (it’s only 10 weeks away) we’ll take stock of how it’s going and see if it’s sustainable to keep going or whether we increase to fortnightly or weekly deliveries.

With the support of the Maleny readers, businesses and community, our ultimate goal is to have a separate newspaper for Maleny – the Maleny News.

A weekend of celebrating books Lovers of books, writers and reading won’t want to miss out on the program of community events that form part of Maleny’s third annual Celebration of Books festival from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26.

One of the key events that will be held on Sunday, at the Maleny Community Centre Hall from 9.45am is the forum ‘To blog or not to blog that is the question’.

Four acclaimed Australian authors will come together to discuss the impact of blogging on contemporary authors and readers. Kristina Olsson, Melissa Lucashenko, Kari Gislason and Inga Simpson will consider issues of authorship and the role of social media in writing by sharing their personal experiences.

Forum facilitator Professor Jennifer Radbourne said they were very excited about the event and believe the discussion will generate interest and lively participation.

“These are a new generation of authors leading readers to reflect on, and be inspired by, their very personal insights,” she said.

Each author will address the topic of the democratisation of writing through blogging and provide varying perspectives, before the discussion is opened up to the audience in the Maleny Community Centre Hall.

Let there be light

Last Wednesday night the Minister for the Environment managed to transform a darkened bowls green into one flooded in light with just the ‘flick of a switch’.

The Minister (and member for Glass House) Andrew Powell was asked to do the official duties of turning on the new lights at the Maleny Bowls Club and to get the club’s twilight bowls ‘come and try’ evening underway.

The club received the funding of $30,720.00 for the lighting via the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

The club is commencing their 'Twilight Bowls' sponsored by Maleny Credit Union on Wednesday, October 15 at 6.00pm and they still have space for a few ‘three person teams’.

If you are interested in joining in, come along on the night to register.

Beerwah Celebration countdown Downtown Beerwah will burst into a bustling festival site to celebrate the official opening of the 2014 Glasshouse Country Festival and Sunshine Coast Council’s $4 million Simpson Street upgrade from 4.00pm this Friday, October 17.

Personality plus Master of Ceremonies, Nina from Australia Zoo will host the free family friendly event. Activities include live music featuring well known coast band 'Cheap Fakes', a brass funk six-piece band with a bluesy soul and a hint of rock, local band ‘The Superdads’, buskers, roving entertainers, a school talent showcase, market stalls, street dining, a kid’s zone including a jumping castle and more.

Dedicated volunteers from The Beerwah Country Women’s Association (CWA) and Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce have been working tirelessly with the Sunshine Coast Council and the Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra (HCDAC) since May to plan the event.

“We have planned an awesome community event. There is something for everyone from free rides, entertainment and our unique CWA Art and Craft markets through to great local food and community groups showcasing their activities. It will be a great event for Beerwah,” said Debbie Ives CWA committee representative.

Chamber committee representative Judy Tomlinson said local businesses have donated generously for the event.

“Their support has been fantastic. We have a monster raffle to support local charity Need a Feed which has been supported by over 40 businesses with prizes including a family pass to Australia Zoo, lots of vouchers for the new shopping centre and a two night stay at Beerwah Hideaway.

“The real estate agents have all been in on the act with Ray White donating a bike through a free raffle, (pictured) Laurie Evans sponsoring the festival shirts and First National sponsoring a kid’s zone.

Everyone wants to get involved,” said Judy.

Community groups will also be there showcasing what they do and Beerwah locals will get to share their views on what is important for the community at the HCDAC and Beerwah and District Youth and Community (BADYAC) stall.

Key times include: 4.00pm School performances, 6.00pm Official Opening, 6.30pm street performer Great Scott, 7.00pm 'Superdads', 8.00pm 'Cheap Fakes'.

Simpson Street will be closed from 12.00 noon until midnight on the day. Event parking will be

available at the Beerwah sports ground, in front of Beerwah State High School, in and around Mawhinney and Free Streets near Beerwah Hotel with walking access over the railway bridge.

Beerwah Village (the new Target) and Beerwah Marketplace (Woolworths) will be monitored by security guards and parking will be reserved for shoppers.

Local boys do Queensland proud

Motorcycling Queensland reckon that the team did Queensland proud and our local boys were very much part of that success.

Hunter Lawrence joins his younger brother Jett as a 2014 Australian Champion after racing away to an impressive final moto win to clinch the 250cc 13-U15 class. Jett Lawrence again put in a great performance, and took first place in both the 85cc 9-U12 years and 65cc 9-U11 years class.

Jett's has already attracted a lot of attention this year, after being crowned the 65cc World Champion in Belgium in August.

Nine-year-old Noah Smerdon, who started riding at five years of age, showed he's another rider to watch after he nabbed the 65cc 7-U9 year’s class title.

Last year Noah qualified second fasted in his division for the National titles however because of an injury he was on crutches so couldn’t compete.

Eleven-year-old Adam Smerdon also competed in the same event as Jett. He didn’t take out any of the titles, coming in 26th in a field of 83 entrants in the 85cc 9-12 years class.

While the event is a national championship, it draws international riders, particularly from both New Zealand and the United States of America.

Jett’s mum, and Team CoManager Emma Lawrence, says she’s extremely proud of Jett and Hunter along with the rest of the squad in such a trying format.

Noah and Adam’s mum Ros said while she was really proud of the boys performances, that it was a special moment as a parent when Noah acknowledged that while he might have taken out the event, it was fully a team effort, that could only be achieved with the hard work and commitment of his supporters particularly his mum and dad Kerry.

In the case of these local Glasshouse Country families while the boys have plenty of talent and determination their individual success has been achieved with the backing and dedication from their teams (families).

All the boys attend local schools, with the Smerdons attending Glasshouse Country Christian College and the Lawrence boys attending Beerwah High. I imagine their achievements must seem very cool by their fellow classmates.

With a total of six championship titles between north Queensland rider Mitch Evans, the Lawrence brothers and Noah Smerdon, it’s no surprise that the Queensland Junior MX Squad dominated the Interstate Cup Challenge.

Moto-x area still on the cards

The concept of a larger enduro dirtbike park within the ‘Mooloolah Logging Area’ native State Forest at Glenview may be mired in controversy, but it seems that a smaller motocross club facility is still on the drawing board.

The Coolum-based Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club met last week with State Government to determine if a small part of the site can be made available for their club’s needs.

The current facility at Quanda Park has a lease until 2020, but increasing urbanisation is expected to put pressure on the future of the location.

With the Big Kart Track adjoining the southern end of the original 570 hectares site and the waterpark proposal for the land adjoining the BP at Glenview, there may be the opportunity to create an ‘activity precinct’ which would include a small land parcel for the Junior Motorcycle Club.

The current Quanda Park club sits on 18 hectares, however the club has previously suggested they would need at least 30 hectares to expand and run national competitions.

Ros Smerdon from Glass House, whose sons have had recent success in motocross championships, thinks the idea is good for the sport and for the local area.

“With the Coolum track having a defined lifespan, the club will need to find somewhere to go, and it would be wonderful for local kids if a replacement facility was created locally,” she said.

“It’s a great sport which gets kids outdoors and teaches them personal discipline, safety and responsibility.

“I’d support the idea 100%,” she said.

Another group, called Sunshine Coast Motorsport Park Inc, was established in 2013 with the stated vision to ‘provide a community based site for training and motor sports’.

It is understood that they were one of the unsuccessful proponents who submitted an expression of interest for developing the Glenview site.

Along with motorbikes, their aim was to include motorsport activities such as speedway, drag racing, drifting, mud racing and car shows, just to name a few.

Cameron sends a smashing standard Cameron Taylor, local business operator, fitness instructor at San Training Centre and Sunshine Coast University student, recently travelled to Sydney to compete at the National University Games.

He finished with the gold medal and was selected on the green and gold team for an outstanding performance and good sportsmanship.

Contesting the largest division in the competition Cameron won his first fight in the second round when the fight was stopped through a 12 point difference called the mercy rule. His second fight lasted only 12 seconds with Cameron winning by knockout and his third fight was stopped in the second round again with the mercy rule.

In the final his opponent gained an early lead but Cameron was able to come back and win the match to secure gold.

Cameron said Taekwondo tournaments can be very long. It was 14 hours between my first fight and the final so it’s always a real battle to stay focused, he said. “I was very happy to be able to finish my fights quickly leaving me fresh for the final.”

Cameron is now training for the National Titles being held in Adelaide in December where he hopes to improve on his Silver medal from last year and is also hoping to be selected for next year’s Summer Universiade, the world's second largest sporting event after the Olympics.

“I want to acknowledge the support of the Sunshine Coast University who helped pay some of the expenses for the trip and also supported me though my scholarship, and thanks also for the support of all my students and clients from San Training Centre,” Cameron said.

Well known Sunshine Coast artist Lucas Salton is putting the finishing touches on his latest public art project which sees a series of three installations commissioned by the owners of Beerwah Village.

GCNews caught up with Lucas to get a bit of background about the artworks which are sure to be a talking point in the community.

Lucas has been interested in art from a very young age and was fortunate to be actively encouraged to follow his passion. In 1988 he moved up to the Sunshine Coast where he started a glassblowing apprenticeship with Montville Glassblowing at what was then the ‘Montville Dome’. A full time artist since the late 1980’s, he focussed exclusively on his glass blowing work for 20 years with recognition both here in Australia and internationally.

The last seven years have seen Lucas transition and develop his work to incorporate public art, sculpture and street scapes using a range of different mediums. His work has been commissioned both commercially and by local councils, Translink and Queensland Rail to name a few. His art can be experienced at a number of public spaces such as Noosa Junction, Northlakes and Queensland Railway stations.

Lucas strives to create artworks for public and urban spaces that seek to positively activate the surrounds and provide community engagement.

The Beerwah Village installations are spaced over three areas or ‘zones’ and in designing the works, Lucas sought to incorporate aspects of public consultation with the design brief. This was to ensure the works reflected an overall consistency of flow throughout Beerwah and highlights local history, fauna and flora.

eastonlawyers council archives and feature local historical images including one of the local store that was located nearby around the 1950’s. ‘Zone Two’ is located in a walkway that features a series of naive trees surrounded by flying galahs. The installation cleverly ties in features of the building where the downpipes form the trunks of the trees. Wanting to link the fauna of the artwork specifically to the area, Lucas also was drawn to the larrikin nature of the galah - that reflects a fun aspect of the Australian spirit. The grey colouring of the birds also linked visually with the surrounding industrial materials used in the building architecture. ‘Zone Three’ showcases an eight metre high by 16 metre long wall that has archival images of wood choppers that relates to the cultural heritage of the area.

The project has taken approximately six months and is due to be completed this week. Lucas hopes that his work will be well received. “I hope Beerwah will be proud of the new street art,” he said.

The annual Charity Cricket Match between Andrew Powell’s celebrity XI vs. Maleny Maulers held last month definitely provided plenty of fun but also did a great job with fundraising for the Lung Foundation in honour of Maleny local Dr Peter Oliver.

Before the game Trevor Sommers from Witta Fuel put the challenge out to the team by offering $50.00 for each six that was hit during the game which saw him hand over $1,000.00.

Andrew Powell backed this offer with one of $10.00 for each four hit on the day, which saw him hand over $500.00.

Richard Jones also donated dollars for every run Peter Oliver’s son Mickey hit which added another $150.00 to the kitty.

The Rotary Club donated $100.00 for the first person to be out for a duck on each team. Rotary President Ric explained that Andrew was the first one out in his team, which I am sure he must have done to allow his team mates to save face by taking one for the team (well, for the charity).

Funds were also raised through raffles and the sale of food and drink so clearly a very solid team effort in the fundraising as well as the game.

Tim returns with shiny silver medal By Lea Parkes

Regular readers will remember seeing our front page story when our local strongman Tim O’Shea was heading overseas to compete in the GPC World Powerlifting Championships in Iguazu Falls, Argentina.

Tim has just returned home proudly carrying a silver medal in the 140kg equipped division, placing second behind Chris Janek, ‘powerlifting legend’ from the USA. Tim said it was very challenging to travel into the South American jungle for a competition.

“While I didn’t set any new personal bests, I was really pleased with my placing,” he said.

“Team Australia did really well, as a nation we placed third, behind Argentina and South Africa.”

Tim spent most of the time competing or helping other Australians, but he did get to spend one day touring the spectacular Iguazu Falls, and one day touring Buenos Aries on the way home.

Safety works underway at Mt Mellum intersection

Motorists will benefit from a safety boost thanks to $1 million worth of works which began this week at a Landsborough-Maleny Road intersection.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the works are funded under the $82 million Safer Roads Sooner program which uses cost effective, road engineering treatments to address crash hotspots.

“While we currently have the lowest road toll on record, any death on our roads is a tragedy,” Mr Powell said.

“This is why we have a strong plan to improve roads and ensure a brighter future for people travelling on them.

“These works are in response to safety issues at the intersection that have involved rear-end crashes and motorists leaving the road and entering the embankment.

“This project will provide a designated right-turn lane from Landsborough-Maleny Road into Upper Mount Mellum Road to provide a safer turning path for motorists.

“The right-turn movement will be restricted.

“The new right turn will provide an alternate route with better visibility for residents and is a much safer turning option and a new guardrail will also be installed to further improve safety,” he said.

Mr Powell said the work was expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Work will be carried out Monday to Friday between 7.00am and 5.00pm.

Changed traffic conditions will include lane closures and reduced speed limits, and motorists may experience some short delays.

Being one of the founding players of the newly formed BeeGees club in 1968, Ken has seen the club grow from the ground up.

He was the BeeGees club president from 1973 to 1987, as well as being on the committee for the Sunshine Coast Soccer Association from 1978 to 1985 and their vice-president from 1989 to 1992.

He became a Life Member of BeeGee’s in 1977 and a Life Member of the Sunshine Coast Association in 1983.

But before all that, Ken played club football at Caboolture and Redcliffe, starting in around 1960 at the age of 15.

“It was pretty rough in those days. If you were lucky there would be a tin shed for changing room. I’d have to hitch-hike to and from the games sometimes.”

Ken credits his speed and stamina around the football field with his hard work on the family’s pineapple farms.

“That, and I never liked coming second,” he said.

“My philosophy in soccer was - run hard and play hard.”

And that’s what Ken was known for … his dedication to the game and to the club.

That and being one of the longest serving players ever. Ken only stopped playing with the BeeGees nine years ago at the age of 60, when he finally hung up his boots from the third division team.

“I mean at that stage I may have only been playing for the last ten minutes, and that may

have been after a stubby or two … but I still loved playing … it’s a great game,” he said.

“Back at the start, Dick Austin and I were the only born and bred locals on the team, with all the others being European, Spanish, Greek, Italian … they were all local tobacco farmers. Amazingly talented soccer players, the lot of them.

“I just had to kick the ball to them from the side, and as long as it went fairly close to them, they had the skills to score nearly every time.”

Ken credits Graham Dann for taking the club to the next level when he took over as coach.

“Graham set down some strict ground rules for behaviour, dress and training, and the team never looked back,” Ken said.

“The success of the team in those days comes back to having a talented group of players who respected each other and cultivated the younger players, a dedicated supporter base and some bloody hard work.

“I’m proud of the ‘Legends’ thing – but feel more honoured to have been included in it with such an outstanding group of people from that era,” said Ken.

Now it’s a reality, with the formation of the Sunshine Coast Scorchers team, based at the Tunnel Ridge Road sports complex as their home ground.

And, according to coach Daryl, the girls have already shown that they are a force to be reckoned with.

“In their first 35 over game last Sunday, they bowled out Western Suburbs for 75 runs, and then in no time at all won the game with three out for 78,” he explained.

“It was fantastic to see the group pull together as a team after all their training sessions in the nets here at Landsborough.

“And they’re keen and ready to play the coming 35 over and the T20 games.”

Currently playing in the Brisbane second grade competition, Daryl is planning for bigger things.

“I think this year they’ll end up in the top two teams, and next season we’re aiming for a spot in the A grade competition,” he said.

Representing the whole of the Sunshine Coast, Daryl says that there are players from all over the coast.

“The youngest players are 14 and the oldest in their early 40’s.

“They come from Noosa, Nambour, Palmwoods, the coast and locally too.”

Over the weekend of November 8 and 9, The Blackall 100 is expected to draw up to 1,000 participants from all levels of competitiveness – from experienced runners and fun-runners – to take part in 50km and 100km runs along The Hinterland Great Walk and its surrounds.

It’s been a long time in the planning according to Alun Davies, Run Queensland’s Co-Director, Events and Marketing.

“Securing permits to host the event in the pristine Sunshine Coast hinterland is a real coup for Run Queensland, and with the villages of Mapleton, Montville and Maleny offering such attractive tourism opportunities, we expect families from all over Australia to come and be part of this inaugural event,” he said.

“It will provide a great opportunity for us to showcase the Hinterland region, its natural beauty, great food and produce, and the excellent range of accommodation.”

Brett Standring, from Run Queensland and also a Glass House Mountains local, added that while the 100km and 50km races will be challenging, they will ensure that running conditions will be safe and controlled.

There will be a new setup for the ‘Community Chest’ program with 10 groups chosen that will share equally in the funds raised through customer purchases of Community Chest products The groups include Australian Zoo Wildlife Warriors (Australian Wildlife Hospital), Beerwah District Rural Fire Brigade, Society of St Vincent de Paul, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge, Beerwah High School Chaplaincy and the P&C Associations of Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, Peachester State Schools and the Glasshouse Country Christian College.

To kick the new Community Chest off IGA Beerwah will be donating $1,000.00 to each of these groups – this should definitely give them all the winning feeling.

What light bulb moment took you on the path to start the business?

Owners Craig and Leanda have owned a holistic B&B retreat ‘Twin Flames’ on Bribie Island for a number of years.

Wishing to expand the B& B retreat concept into also providing a wellness clinic based on their own interests and professional expertise, they were drawn to the idea of opening a highly visable shop which catered to community need and offered a “one stop wellness centre.” Both Craig and Leanda were strongly drawn to the Beerwah area though their love of the mountains and rapidly emerging community development potential. The area has a lot of young families and one of the key aspects of the shop is to be available for people to pop in, talk and to get answers that relate to their health and wellbeing. This idea gradually unfolded and evolved and the shop at Beerwah was established.

What challenges have you experienced?

People often say that the first year of business is the toughest. The challenge has been to establish a business that constantly identifies and responds well to the local community need. This is reflected in the choice of practitioners, products stocked and classes given. One of the biggest challenges has been to let people know the business is here and what is offered. Many people have not realised the huge range of practitioner services and products offered. For example, every staff member at the Healthy Guru is a qualified therapist specialising in specific modalities. When you visit the Healthy Guru, the staff will individually tailor products and treatments if required to specifically suit your condition. Qualified Naturopaths, Leanda and Judy will individually create liquid herbs tinctures, dry herbs and aromatherapy products from the recently introduced herbal dispensary, to best suit customers needs. This is a business where the highly qualified and experienced staff genuinely cares about your health and will do everything possible to assist in customer’s wellbeing.

How have you overcome any challenges?

Consistency of service and quality of product has been critical. The Healthy Guru have constantly updated their products, provided special orders and listened to want the customers have requested. Regular advertising has helped inform people of what is on offer as well as cross promotion with community events and classes. Social media - Facebook, a live and active website, membership newsletters and range extensions have also contributed to the success of the business.

Business Buzz with Lea Parkes It looks like Wednesday is going to be a big day in Beerwah, when the doors finally open at IGA and Target at Beerwah Village.

I remember when former councillor Grosskreutz announced in her GCNews col that Target Country were moving into Beerwah, I was so excited and thought I couldn’t wait for the day… little did I know just what a wait it would be!

For me the importance of having a larger retail store locally has always been about another reason to keep people shopping locally, instead of heading down to Morayfield and doing all their shopping. Hopefully it means that if they stay here to shop, it means they will then grab a coffee and cake at a local café, or head into the newsagent for a scratchie or into the chemist for a script.

When all of the additional items are purchased locally those funds stay in our community and you know the rest. This helps create jobs for locals, support local community groups etc, and in turn make our community stronger.

The other spin off is that it gives other new businesses the confidence to open stores locally, and one of those is the Kwerky Café in Simpson Street (next door to Bombay Bliss). Ken and Jodie Bannister, the former owners of Subway, plan to be open for business on Wednesday this week.

And if you are wondering what the café will be like, it is pretty well summed up in the name, they are so Quirky that they have even changed the spelling to suit their style and approach!

Michelle will conduct two Printmaking workshops - Introduction to Printmaking (Relief and Collograph), and Intaglio and Chine Colle, and a Life Drawing Workshop during the Open studios.

The Mooloolah Mob still walking

Mooloolah’s Heart Foundation Walking Group has now been walking for almost 10 years and for some of us that’s well over 5000km covered and they would love to have you join them.

Walking is each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. They meet at Martin Rungert Park, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends.

This is a Heart Foundation group activity.

Public artwork makes a real statement Beerwah now has vibrant artworks covering one large and three narrow vertical sections of the skate ramps, and a new entry statement to improve the look of the entrance, and creatively link the nearby underpass with the skate park.

The improvements are the outcome of a program of art workshops for young people that took place recently at the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) and the Beerwah Skate Park.

Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with The Old Ambulance Station Nambour, has delivered a series of striking public artworks for the whole Beerwah community to enjoy.

Councillor Baberowski said the objective of the program was to connect with young locals and give them a sense of pride and ownership about the community they live in.

“It also gave them creative and mentoring opportunities to get involved in legal street art processes and community events and activities.

“They were able to determine the design for the skate park and to learn spray painting techniques,” he said.

Cancer Council Queensland is calling on all Sunshine Coast residents to honour women who have been touched by breast and gynaecological cancer by volunteering a little of their spare time, uniting in pink, and fighting back against the disease.

Cancer Council Queensland Regional Fundraising Coordinator Esther Attewell said anyone could support women impacted by cancer by volunteering a few hours of their time to sell Pink merchandise throughout the Sunshine Coast from Friday, October 24 to the official Pink Ribbon Day (Monday, October 27).

Contributed by Alun Williams Landsborough Historical Museum had its busiest day for months recently when over 100 seniors came to ‘Step Back in Time – Sharing Memories and Reminiscing’, a day organised by OzCare as part of Dementia Awareness Month.

Visitors came from all over the Sunshine Coast region to enjoy the memories invoked by the Museum’s large collection of items from Landsborough’s past.

It was wonderful to see our museum full of visitors enjoying a chat with friends over morning tea or a sausage from the barbecue kindly provided on the front lawn by the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade.

The Museum staff was very happy to be able to support our community, and hope that there will be similar opportunities in the future.

Community Multiple Book Launch

On Tuesday, November 18, Glass House Community Hall will host a Multiple Book Launch in aid of the Prince Charles Hospital Cardiac Unit.

Starting at 10.00am the event will run through to 12.00noon and promises to have something for everyone.

The morning will feature storytelling from three local authors as well as presentations from guest speakers, morning tea upon arrival by Beerwah CWA, a tai chi demonstration, and door prizes. The three featured authors are Lee Paterson, Neville Saffron and Kate Wright who all wrote their latest books whilst in rehabilitation after cardiovascular treatment at Prince Charles Hospital.

Jo-Anne Miller, the state shadow minister for health will deliver the keynote speech along with a senior executive from Prince Charles hospital. Brenda Davies, president of U3A, will also address the audience. Community groups and organisations are encouraged to come along and join in the fun and group bookings are welcome. Admission is free however a gold coin donation would be appreciated. Along with the book launch and related storytelling there will also be books to purchase from the Beerwah Writers Group and students of U3A. If you take your admission ticket to the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, you will also receive discount off lunch.

Rebooting the art of recycling The Maleny Flexi School has been busy for the last couple of months preparing for National Recycling Week.

With a recycled technological art exhibition, titled ‘Re Boot’ the works will display graphics design, photographs, jewelry and sculpture made from recycled out dated techno equipment.

The exhibition will run in conjunction with the official launch of their successful grant (Technology Trendsetters Opal Grant) at the Maleny Library on Wednesday, November 5, 11.00am – 12.00noon.

Councillor Jenny McKay, a representative from State Library Queensland and library management staff from Sunshine Coast Libraries will be in attendance, in addition to other groups and community members.

A strong connection with the students that have the need for alternative learning programs to mainstream education really assisted in the success of the grant application.

The grant items included two laptops, including an Apple MacBook air, two iPads, a Microsoft 2 tablet, a Samsung Galaxy 4 and a Sony e-reader.

Rotary’s fight against Polio – the end game?

This hand gesture is the symbol for Rotary’s ‘This Close’ campaign. We are ‘This Close’ (99%!) to ending polio.

World Polio Day is October 24.

Although The Rotary Club of Maleny donates most of its charity funds back into the Maleny Community they also support the amazing global effort to rid the world of Polio. This year our Maleny Cub has donated $2,000 towards the fight.

It was 1979 when Rotary first made efforts to eradicate polio on a widespread scale. The fight to end this crippling disease has limited occurrences to only three countries where transmission has never been stopped. Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria, which remain our last challenge to overcome a disease that once affected 350,000 children a year.

The countless hours and resources Rotary volunteers worldwide devote to ending polio, both by fundraising in local communities and working internationally at the coal-face providing oral vaccinations are starting to pay great dividends.

For most of us Rotary remains one of the easiest ways everyday people can get involved in fighting polio, a fight that will be won by ‘vaccinating one child at a time’.

The costs, although significant, pale in comparison to the substantial dividends that a polio free world would gain. Financial savings from the forgone costs of treating polio could exceed $1 billion per year, while a 2010 study published in leading medical journal ‘Vaccine’ estimated the economic benefits of halting polio amount to US$40-50 billion.

The real benefit of course is a healthy upright child.

The Alaskan Interior and Inside Passage cruise Contributed by Neil Playford, owner of Escape Travel, Caloundra I have always wanted to travel to Alaska, and was fortunate enough to experience the best that Alaska had to offer in May 2014 as the leader of the Escape Travel Caloundra escorted group trip.

We were travelling with Princess Cruises on their Connoisseur escorted land tour. Flying into Fairbanks we were able to experience the Gold Rush history, pan for our own fortune and learn about the native Indian and Eskimo cultures of the region.

From there we travelled south to the Denali Princess Lodge. Heading off on an included tour into Denali National Park, we were lucky enough to see moose, elk, dall sheep, black bears and the mighty grizzly bear, plus clear skies allowed for some amazing views of the majestic Mount McKinley. Back at the lodge that night we all enjoyed fresh Alaskan Salmon and King Alaskan crab as part of the included meal package.

From there we boarded the luxury glass domed Princess rail carriages heading for Talkeentna and the McKinley Princess Lodge, where the restaurant and deck had an amazing view across the valley to Mount McKinley. The optional flight seeing and glacier landing on the lower slopes of Mount McKinley, which was available from this lodge, was the trip highlight for many in the group.

After our six nights in the Princess Lodges, it was time to board the Alaskan railroad once more for the stunning trip past frozen alpine lakes and flowing glaciers down to the coast and the port town on Whittier. The train pulls up next to the ship to allow a very smooth transition onto the waiting Coral Princess for the next part of the adventure. The Southbound inside passage cruise took us up close and personal with some of the largest glaciers in the world. From the comfort of the balcony we were able to witness large sheets of ice calving off the Lamplugh glacier right in front of us. The sights and sounds of the full day spent in Glacier Bay national park will be fondly remembered. From there we continue the journey south to the port towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Optional excursions from these ports allow you to go whale watching, take a glacial flight or helicopter trip, experience dog sledding on a glacier, take a float plane to a remote national park or ride the famous White Pass and Yukon Historic Railroad.

Upon arrival in Vancouver we transferred to the luxurious Fairmont Waterfront hotel for the start of our Globus tour of the Canadian Rockies.

This track starts at the car park off Marsh’s road (alternative car park to Tibrogargan car park), and traverses varied plant communities before climbing to the Trachyte ridge and the Jack Ferris lookout for stunning views of the mountains and surrounding forests. The descent takes walkers through Tibrogargan National Park and around part of that circuit before returning to the car park. Moderate level of fitness required. By Bev Dooley It has been another interesting month in the Visitor Information Centre.

I received an invitation to the unveiling of the new information sign provided by Glass House Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN).

It was a pleasure to meet the girls from the Community Centre and Gwen Malcolm president of GMAN as sponsors and the driving force behind the upgrade. The sign provides an informative look at the local flora, fauna, history and geology of the area. Next time you are near the Community Centre, stop and have a look.

If you are a keen walker but maybe short on knowledge of the area, GMAN also provide a free guided walk service which is popular and great if you wish to know more from an expert.

We have information times in the centre.

On Friday, October 17 from 4.00pm to 9.00pm at Simpson Street, Beerwah, the Beerwah Celebration will launch the Glasshouse Country Festival and commemorate the completion of the Simpson Street upgrade.

Entertainment includes a showcase of school student talent, buskers and professional acts.

On Saturday, October 25 you can witness the historic steam train pull into the Glass House Mountains train station, greeted by volunteers from both the Community Centre and the Information Centre. A short informative talk on the Glass House area will be given and for those that may wish to know more, a guide to the information centre will be provided.

And finally over the school holidays, we have extended our small retail range and have a beautiful selection of pottery necklaces made by a local potter. You can also find some illustrated children’s books produced by local talent Heather Gall and, due to popularity, our range of cards by Heather has been extended. Honey and jam continue to be a favourite for visitors and locals alike.

Patterns of sunlight

The West Coastline of Australia has a beautiful unspoilt serenity which is a photographer’s paradise. There are striking rocky outcrops peeping out of the warm blue waters, high cliffs, shelly beaches, lighthouses, long stretches of straight highway bordered by sandy dunes, and coral bays filled with fish, dolphins and dugongs. Most pictures taken of Snag Island Jetty are taken on top of the jetty, but we chose to photograph this jetty from below, with the sunlight shining through the timber slats creating shadow patterns underneath the jetty, and in the water, also revealing the grain in the jetty timber. The stanchions supporting the jetty formed a natural frame for two boats creating overall a picture with a difference.

Visitor numbers climb at Mount Ngungun Since the upgrade of tracks and signage at Mount Ngungun the walking track is drawing thousands more visitors each year.

The number of hikers climbing from January 1 to July 8 this year was 40,456 compared with about 32,000 in the whole of 2013.

National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said that the track was realigned to make it easier, safer and more enjoyable and visitors have been

flocking to take in the spectacular views of the mountains, forests, waterways and farmland of the Sunshine Coast.

“On average about 215 people a day do the hike.

On fine days and weekends, the track can host more than 300 people a day,” Mr Dickson said.

“If that level of visitation continues, we could see about 78,500 visitors this year, more than double last year’s number.”

Last month the Caloundra Family History Research group hosted the Beerwah History Group for research at the library and resource centre. Seven of their members arrived at 9.30am and were welcomed by CFHRI President Valerie Thornton.

Five volunteers were also on hand to assist and two PCs and two laptops were put to good use, as well as the fiche machine and library.

Both CFHRI and Beerwah members enjoyed a fruitful and social exchange on the day.

Social Media Course During November there will be two separate courses that will run at Morris House Neighbourhood Centre to assist locals in developing their social media skills. Tough lesson to learn

My 20-year-old daughter has had to learn a tough lesson this week that even when you do the right thing, are enthusiastic and proactive in applying for a job, that sometimes the odds are stacked against you. Also that it is possible that the business you submit your application to, doesn’t make the effort to ensure that the application is safely kept for consideration.

After applying for a position in a local business, on the day they were advertised and then waiting numerous weeks for a response, (knowing that others in the area had already received a letter of rejection), her hopes were high that this meant she was still in the running for consideration.

However the outcome wasn’t to be, and as their opening day was drawing close and she still had not been contacted. I rang to see what was happening, only to be told that her resume wasn’t on the system. Not only that, there were also no more positions available, and she would need to submit another application for consideration when a position became available.

I really hope that there aren’t any other young people out there who have had the same thing happen to them, and they are still waiting for this disappointing outcome. I would hope that other local businesses would take more care with job applications and show more consideration when their mistake has been discovered.

By signing my name in the past, I have had the lowest of people kill my pets, beat up my children, slaughter my wildlife and have suffered harassment like you would not believe.

Yes, these people are often locals, yes these people should know better – and no – the police would do nothing. ‘Not our problem’. I had to purchase and train a dog (responsibly) to keep me and mine safe.

Here is something I do believe in enough to sign my name. I believe in a world where people can speak without fear, a world where young children can go to school without fearing for their lives. A world where citizens and helpless animals really are protected by the laws provided to protect them and by law enforcement individuals paid to do so.

I, as an avid reader of this balanced, small, local newspaper – fully endorse the individual’s right to free speech in a manner and form that protect those that they love.

Please don’t assume anything about the writer – and do not use your past career as validation for your personal view in this matter, Mr Stallworthy – it is irrelevant.

Open letter to my LNP MP

You failed to Stand Up for your community on Tuesday, October 7 and instead you ‘gave away the farm’.

As a constituent in your electorate I am disgusted that you failed to stand up and be counted on the issue of asset sales / leasing of our essential assets including the long term lease of electricity poles and wires, businesses your Government promised would not be touched.

‘Energy Assets Safe’, Newman says 30 April 2013, Brisbane Times. He lied.

I, and an estimated 75% to 80% of fellow Queenslanders oppose the sale / lease of profitable assets on the grounds that asset sales / lease will mean we all pay more for an essential service that will be less reliable, employ fewer Queenslanders and be owned and controlled by overseas interests, whose primary focus will be maximising profit at the expense of ordinary Queenslanders.

Even Treasurer Tim Nicholls back in 2010 acknowledged that long term leases were ‘as good as giving away the farm’.

As my MP you failed to put our community first, and you will be forever tarred with the toxic stench of Nicholl’s and Newman's asset sales / leasing plan and as such...you just lost another two votes.

Following the death of William Grigor in 1907, his youngest daughter Clementina and her husband William Smith Burgess became the owners and custodians of the historic Bankfoot House.

Well known for being the former lunch stop for the Cobb & Co Coaches, and the original Glasshouse Post Office, Bankfoot House was equally well known as an accommodation house for travellers.

Among those who were to avail themselves of the ‘hospitable board of Mrs Burgess’ were the Fullerton family. Following their arrival in Australia from Scotland in 1911 the Fullertons lived on a small farm at Wellington Point until, in 1913, Robert Fullerton selected 160 acres for a larger farm situated 2 ½ miles from the Glasshouse Mountains between Ngungun and Coonowrin.

Mr Fullerton brought his son Jim to the Glasshouse Mountains during the school holidays and built a four roomed house to accommodate his family. It is likely that they met their neighbours, the Burgess family, during this time.

The Fullertons arrived in the Glasshouse Mountains on June 3, 1914, just over 100 years ago! Mrs Fullerton and her children Margaret, John, Willie and Alister were met at the railway station by Mrs Clementina Burgess. She drove the Fullertons to Bankfoot House in her horsedrawn buggy along a sandy and dusty road, wellused by the many bullock teams that traversed it daily, hauling logs to the railway station.

Mr Fullerton and his sons Rob Jnr, Jim and Roy followed a few hours later on the goods train with the family’s possessions which included ‘an old horse called Dick, two cows and a calf (Bella, Daisy and Maggie), a tabby cat and her kittens’.

After spending the night at Bankfoot and appreciating the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Burgess, the family left early the next morning for their new home. Mr Burgess later brought the family’s possessions out from the station on his bullock wagon.

The Fullerton and Burgess families were to become close friends, cemented further in 1928 by the wedding of Jim Fullerton and Ellie Burgess, which was held on the Bankfoot House property.

This is our time to celebrate! The Glass House Country Festival program is the best yet and Beerwah’s Simpson Street is now showing us just how far we've come from those first community consultation sessions that collected our ideas and proposed that 'Beerwah aims to have a brighter future'. Well now we can actually see the transformation on the ground and feel very proud that we've given the town and the Glass House country townships a truly solid foundation for that bright future.

For me, the sense of ‘this is going to be really great’ came as the first tower went up on 'Tower Green', which is where the old rail crossing used to be.

The icing on the cake was the extra seating and sidewalk shelters.

I have to proudly say it's not just what council has done (as good as that has been) but also the tremendous contribution the private sector has made in the shopping centre extension, the new businesses that have come to town and the new developments that have recently started construction. The bottom line is that we now have a major activity centre in our fabulous Glass House Country that is a great place to shop, meet and visit. We all wanted to retain a (modern) country town look and feel for Beerwah and that is what's been delivered. This is, as they say, only 'the start of the beginning' but our transformed Glass House country township of Beerwah has held onto our local community values and is sure to strengthen local business.

Together, council and the community have put a lot of effort into this project over the last few years and the end result is one that we can all take pride in. Enjoy our communities’ success and the festival.

Last week the Beerwah Streetscape project took out the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia ‘Overall Winner’ state award for innovation and excellence. The award recognised it was not just what was delivered but how it was delivered.

The commitment of the whole project team to high standards in the delivery and an unflagging responsiveness to the needs and challenges thrown up by the civil and concurrent private sector works, traders, community and my constant nagging, means they should feel justifiably very proud of a job well done for council, the Glasshouse communities and the region.

Rural News Australian Pineapples next in biosecurity firing line

The news that Fijian ginger is now available for sale in Sydney despite major questions about its pest and disease status, has sent shivers up the spines of Australia’s pineapple growers.

The growers fear their industry could be the next in line to be exposed to pests and disease by a complacent federal biosecurity regime.

Peak body for the pineapple industry, Growcom, said pineapple growers were outraged that the sale of imported ginger had been authorised by the government since it raised significant questions not only around Australia’s biosecurity, but government processes as a whole.

“The Government has yet to formally respond to the recommendations of the Senate Inquiry report released in March which strongly criticised government biosecurity procedures regarding pineapple, potato and ginger imports.

Meanwhile, imported product, Fijian ginger, is already here,” Growcom Chief Advocate, Rachel Mackenzie said.

“It makes a mockery of our participation in the Senate inquiry process and calls into question the usefulness of these inquiries. It seems they are nothing more than political navel gazing exercises with no capacity to influence policy,” she said.

“Growcom, along with the Australian Ginger Industry Association, invested significant time and resources into providing submissions to this Inquiry and in appearing before the Senators.

To not even be given the courtesy of a formal response from government is insulting. The pineapple industry is terrified that a poor process conducted without any transparency or accountability has the potential to bring a disease into the country that can account for up to 40% crop losses,” said Ms Mackenzie.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network The miracle of the butterfly

Nothing heralds the onset of Spring like butterflies flitting round the garden. But many of us forget that, without caterpillars, there would be no butterflies. Remember that next time you consider squashing a caterpillar or spraying insecticides onto your veggie garden.

We have many beautiful butterflies on the Sunshine Coast. However, habitat destruction and disturbance, loss of corridors and food sources, the displacement of native vegetation by weeds, unnatural fire regimes, drought effects and climate change are all threatening butterfly populations.

Butterfly species rely on specific plant species as their food source, with caterpillars chomping on the green parts and adults sipping the flower nectar. The Australian Painted Lady loves Everlasting Daisies and Yellow Buttons, citrus trees are a favourite of the Orchard Swallowtail, and native trees such as Tuckeroo and Flame Trees will attract the Common Pencilled-Blue butterfly.

If you want to attract butterflies to your garden, plant masses of nectarrich flowers in a sunny, wind-protected spot, and a range of native shrubs and trees, including Crepe Myrtle, Banksia, Angophora and Eucalypts.

Our most precious butterfly, the vulnerable Richmond Birdwing (male pictured), feeds on the Richmond Birdwing Vine. This butterfly has disappeared from two-thirds of its original range which continues to contract. Local groups like GMAN have been growing and planting these vines along watercourses, in gardens and on state lands to provide breeding sites and food and to increase the range of this treasure. Call GMAN if you would like to purchase vines for your own patch.

Maleny flying fox information evening

There will be an informative talk by Dr Les Hall at the Maleny Community Centre, Wednesday, October 29, 6.30pm – 8.00pm.

An introduction on flying fox biology and their ecological function on the Sunshine Coast will be followed by information regarding the failures and success of flying fox camp removals. Dr Hall will discuss the somewhat contentious relationship between flying foxes, horses and human deaths caused by Hendra Virus.

Dr Hall has been studying bats for over 45 years, firstly while employed by the CSIRO and more recently at the University of Queensland. He has authored many books on Australian bats, and has been on many boards and committees dealing with flying-fox management.

He was also closely involved with research on the emergence of Hendra and Australian Bat Lyssavirus.

There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation followed by tea and coffee.

This is probably the most spectacular of all of Australia’s wonderful rainforest trees. Through Spring and Summer, the tree is covered in large brilliant red flower heads. HANDS OFF HALLS CREEK How long has Halls Creek been considered?

Caloundra City and Sunshine Coast Council have considered urban develoment at Halls Creek since the early 2000s and have consistently rejected it as unsuitable.

Caloundra South Caloundra City Council agreed to the Caloundra South Development provided at Halls Creek.

Do we have to have the Halls Creek IGA? The SEQ Regional Plan requires either the Halls Creek or the Beerwah East IGA to be included. and prefers Beerwah East. This The Halls Creek and Beerwah East IGA including Stocklands land holding at Halls Creek and the protected CAMCOS rail corridor.

Why is Halls Creek in the SEQ Regional Plan?

Sunshine Coast Council (and a number of community groups) made submissions on the SEQ Regional Plan calling on the State Government NOT to include the Halls Creek IGA. Stockland made a submission calling on the State Government to include the Halls Creek IGA. The State Government ignored Council and the community and included the Halls Creek IGA.

We had a wonderful day and pace of play was remarkable considering the size of the field. The event was once again sponsored by Sean and Jen Kelly. The winner of the A Grade Gross was Sue Jones who shot 85 off the stick, on a count back from J. Malone, also on 85. B Grade Gross winner was J. Hollis with 92 Gross, on another dreaded count back from our Ladies President, Monica Dangerfield.

C Grade Gross winner was Barb McIntosh with 101 off the stick, once again on a count back from runner up Fay Raven on 101 off the stick.

Winners of the Nett were K. Dymond in A Grade with a 70 Nett, Jackie Collinson in B grade, on a count back, with a 71 Nett, and C Grade winner was Marie Oxlade with 70 Nett. Runners up were A. Hewitt in A Grade with 71 Nett, Y. Henry 71 Nett in B Grade and G. Young took home the prize in C Grade. Winner of the Seniors event was K Dymond with her 70 Nett. We held an Accuracy Drive on the 17th fairway and the closest to the centre with their drives were M. Pearce in A Grade, Julie McMahon in B Grade and Oriel Lyon in C Grade. Nearest to the Pins went to June Hall on number 2, Jen Kelly on the 5th, Janelle Balfe on 16, and Sue Williamson on the 18th. The team event went to C. Tannock, Julie McMahon, K. Dyson and Marie Oxlade with a total of the best three scores being 217 Nett. A great day was had by all, which is a tribute to our hard working Committee especially our Captain Lea and Vice-Captain Mavis who put in so much effort to make the day such a success.

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club

Contributed by Jenny Morris Latest News As our Junior teams are about to start the Summer Season we wish to congratulate our Div 3 team, Mooloolah Valley Magic and Div 4b team Muppets for winning the Autumn Season in September. A special mention must be made that the Muppets have now won three seasons in a row. What an effort!

Congratulations to Elizabeth, Phoebe and Jack, well done. The next season starts on October 25.

Our Monday night teams have six matches left.

Two teams, Div 2,The Maddogs and Div 4,The Vipers are in the top four positions. Good luck for the rest of the season which ends on November 27.

We were fortunate enough to receive the Partnership Funding grant from the Sunshine Coast Council and wish to thank them for the funds which will help in our Facility Maintenance. Any funding is most appreciated.

At the moment we are working to update our lights and hopefully be lucky to receive a grant from the Gaming Community Benefit fund soon and we all have our fingers crossed.

Our next Committee meeting is on Tuesday, October 21 at 6.30pm at our clubhouse.

Around the corner in November is our AGM so if anyone is interested in helping out the club please put your hand up to support us in any way, big or small. We also have our Xmas break up in late November.

Maleny Swimming Club

Contributed by Jodie Diefenbach Recently members of the Maleny club competed at the Nambour Swimming Carnival in both the 50 metre and 100 metre events.

The morning session saw Darcy swim all four strokes in 50 metre events, achieving three Personal Bests, and coming 1st in three events and 2nd place in the other. This is a terrific effort for someone who is only seven years of age.

The afternoon session saw all the remaining swimmers compete, with Danica achieving gold in her 50 metre butterfly and bronze in 50 metre breaststroke. Lochlan and Jacob competed in the 15 & Over division with Jacob achieving four Personal Bests in his 50 metre events and Lochlan winning silver in his 50 backstroke and two bronze in his 50 and 100 metre breaststroke events.

This is turning out to be a great swimming season for our swimmers.

Maleny Swimmers Jacob, Darcy, Lochlan and Danica New Start System Contributed by Joyce Newton The Maleny Swimming Club have started off the season with a new Infinity Start System and Tripod thanks to the generous donations of the Maleny Trail Bike Riders and the Maleny Credit Union Charitable Trust Fund.

Gone are the days of cap guns and beeper guns.

This system has not only a loud beeper but a light to assist time keepers. The Chief Starter does not have to load a gun or even hold a starter gun. The Chief Starter just presses a button!

The new starter system will assist our club swimmers and time keepers with their starts on Club Nights, and also assist time keepers and swimmers at the club’s annual swimming carnival in February to get their very best results.

The Maleny Swimming Cub meets every Wednesday night at 530pm at the Maleny Centenary Pool, and everyone is welcome to join in the fun!

These are our under 10’s, the boys play Friday nights around the coast. The coaches are experienced and respected players on the coast. Friday was the team’s first game and was played at Caloundra.

The boys batted well and made 150 and Sunshine Coast Grammar made 122. The Boys did exceptionally well with both their batting and fielding, especially as this was their first game.

Man of the Match was Bailey Baartz who had an amazing all round game with his batting and bowling.

The 19th century US author Mark Twain popularised the saying – ‘There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics’ – commenting on the unscrutinised manipulation of facts and figures.

That’s why GCNews is independently audited every six months by the Audited Media Association of Australia (commonly called CAB auditing).

Our print numbers, delivery numbers, and bulk drop numbers are meticulously scrutinised and analysed twice a year, with a final accreditation given by the AMAA. It’s an expensive process and time consuming, but we think that it is important, so that we are open and honest about who we are and what we claim to be able to do.
