This Week in GCNews Hi Everyone
Local news........................... 3-10 You said it.......................... 34-35 Elected reps............................ 12 Kids & Parenting................. 36-37 Community news................ 14-15 School news............................ 38 Maleny in focus.................. 16-22 Churches & noticeboard............ 39 So after working through numerous ideas and options, we have decided that our next stage would be to trial the idea of incorporating ‘Maleny News’ into the third edition of the month and delivering into the letterboxes of nearly 2,000 houses in and around Maleny. We know how important an independently owned community newspaper is to the fabric of the community – especially one as passionate as Maleny – and so by working with both local businesses and the broader community, we are keen to create something that can work successfully for everyone. At this stage we don’t know what that final product will end up being and we figure there will be plenty more ‘baby steps’ along the way. We’re keen to head down the path together with you all and see where it leads us. We know that Maleny is a community that likes to discuss ideas – so we have initially set up a ‘Maleny News’ Facebook page as a central forum for sharing your thoughts. We also encourage you to contact us directly. We have set up an email address malenynews@gcnews.com.au and our phone number is 5433 7445. Or drop into our office in Glass House and say hello. And for businesses, we are happy to call in, and have a chat. Many of you will have already met Carol our Sales Rep who has been dropping into businesses during the last couple of months, and Greg and I have met quite a few of you at the Chamber Breakfasts over the last six months. So welcome to the first edition the (Glasshouse Country News incorporating the) MALENY NEWS. We hope you will find it a cracking good community newspaper, and one which you’ll look out for in your letterboxes on the third Wednesday of each month. But on the other weeks you won’t have to miss out, you’ll still be able to pick up copies of Glasshouse Country News in Maleny. Happy reading …

ello Maleny, and welcome to the first delivered edition of our expanded independently owned and operated community newspaper. You may have noticed the masthead of the paper – Glasshouse Country News incorporating the Maleny News, this is about the simplest way we could describe what we have done. For a number of years at Glasshouse Country News we’ve had many requests from Maleny community groups and residents who would like to return to the days where the town has an independent community newspaper. Our response has always been we would love to do it, but we have never felt confident that we could create a separate publication and make it sustainable. So we’ve never wanted to take up the option and then disappoint the community. Over the years, we have seen a number of people who have given it a red hot crack, and printed an independent 'Maleny' local paper, but despite their enthusiasm, commitment and passion, haven’t been able to make it work. Last year we put the notion back on the ‘ideas board’ to think about whether or not it might work if we expanded Glasshouse Country News delivery area into Maleny. But, we knew that just coming into town and bulk dropping a pile of papers which was totally Glasshouse Country focused wasn’t going to cut it. So we decided to take some ‘baby steps to test the water’, so that Maleny locals would get a taste of our style and approach, and see what they thought about us. Since the start of this year, as the size of the paper has grown, we have been including more news items from and about Maleny, and regular contributions from community groups. Progressively, we have seen the number of papers being picked up significantly increasing – so we thought we must be doing something right for the Maleny community. And we’ve found that Glasshouse Country locals are also enjoying reading about the comings and goings of the Maleny community.

historic departure of Queensland troops as part of the 1st Australian Imperial Force 100 years ago. Members of the Australian Light Horse Association will participate in the ride with up to 100 horses through the streets of Brisbane; the number of horses signify the 100 years that have passed. The Maleny Troop will be well represented at the event with 20 of their group planning to take part. Secretary of the Maleny Troup, Lee Dominick said this was a once in a life time ride, marking 100 years since local lads - men from the Sunshine Coast and wider areas such as Toowoomba and Lockyer valley etc, left for World War I. “These men were the first to leave Australian shores and were men who fought in Gallipoli, without their horses,” she said. If you would like to be among the crowd to witness the event, you will need to be located on Adelaide Street, between George and Creek Streets at 5.00pm.

We should start with the questions, what is men’s health? Why is the message so important? It’s about being accountable for yourself, thinking about those close to you, and not just about yourself – your health and wellbeing affects your whole family. And it’s not only old blokes who are retired who get crook! After several years of involvement with the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group at every gathering a new person or couple have had an experience to share. The common thread is ‘if I had taken the time to have a chat with my GP we may be in a better space.’ The fact is blokes are slack. We don’t realise when moving out of the steel plated and bullet proof stage of youth to middle age and beyond that we are a little easier target. We can potentially be under attack from so many illnesses. What can you do? There is so much information available and dealing with the maze of information is nothing short of confusing. So when should we start to monitor our own health? In truth we should never have stopped after our

mothers stopped taking us to the GP. We all have those gap years up to 40 or 50. When you look at the health statistics for the Sunshine Coast this is the age where we find out if we are on the slide or not. A visit to your GP will most likely focus around blood. It may be pressure or tests to find out if we have a heart problem (the pump is not working as well as it was or we have clogged plumbing) or the filter system is not working as it should, or there are other ‘C’ cells that are causing other problems. Of most concern is prostate cancer. This disease is not one size fits all and there is not only one treatment. But the message is clear - if it is not managed, it will be terminal. How important is men’s health? If you look at it in terms of cost, emotional, medical, community, economic, the cost of poor health management is very high. In terms of prostate cancer, there are 20,000 new cases diagnosed each year, and 3,000 men die from PC each year. Look at the increase in treatment numbers, this relates to on average say 10,000 per year. The success rate of treatment is high when the problem is identified in the early stages. Men from a family with PC history should speak to their doctor about what testing they should undertake from age 40, and all other men from age 50. You owe this to your family and friends. What is available? Good Health, visit your GP, join a local PC support group, join your local Men’s Shed, visit PCFA web site pcfa.org.au. Recently there was a Prostate Cancer forum held in Beerwah, this was a partnership between Mark McArdle and the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group. About 60 attended with a mix of males and females. The panel of speakers included PC survivors and support professionals. The information shared by the panel and the attendees via Q & A highlighted the need for greater discussion around men’s health issues.

It’s almost impossible not to notice that the construction of the new Beerwah Village shopping centre on the corner of Simpson Street and Peachester Road is powering along. Although the stylish looking complex, adjoining the existing Beerwah Marketplace, is to officially open on November 17, the centre owners are pleased to let everyone know that some of the major stores will be trading in four short weeks. “From October 15, IGA, Target Country and a range of specialty shops will be open for business,” said Rick Abrahams, Director of Village Fair Investments – the owners of the complex. “It’s a proud day for us as we’ve been planning the new centre for many years. “We’d like to thank the locals for being patient during the time of construction, but we believe everyone will agree that the wait will definitely be worth it,” he said. Leasing agent Graeme Wakefield from Race Property is excited by the range of businesses that will be opening new stores. “Aside from the majors of IGA and Target, there will be the fashion houses of Millers and Reiss Emporium, Coffee Club, Bargain Max discount store, Amcal Pharmacy (was Soul Pattinson), and a larger relocated Mrs Browns café,” explained Graeme. “And we’re in the final stages of negotiations for others including fruit and vegetables and various food outlets, such as fish and chips and sushi.

Graeme Wakefield (Leasing Manager), Jacqueline Abrahams and Rick Abrahams (Director, Village Fair Investments) check over the final details before the first stores open next month “There are still a few spots open in the centre if a business would like to take advantage of the great opportunity the new centre will offer,” he said. The new extended car park is already open, meaning an end to the parking hassles for shoppers at the existing Beerwah Marketplace. And there are more changes to come very soon – including finalising the Lucas Salton created public art installations on the Simpson Street side of the new buildings, the removal of the overhead power lines and poles and a family funtime afternoon celebrating the official opening on November 17.

Yeeha Rodeo proves a winner By Lea Parkes After nearly a decade the Honky Tonk Rodeo returned to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, providing the crowds with a great night of exciting entertainment. Beerwah local and Honky Tonk Rodeo staff member Amanda Milburn said in the final couple of weeks before the rodeo, the club put in a massive effort to organise and promote the night, and the hard work clearly paid off. Secretary of the Sports Club Committee, Elaine Reeves said the community response on the night was excellent, with approximately 1,800 people going along. “The Club’s staff did a fantastic job at the event as well as with all the behind the scenes activity done in the weeks leading up to the night,” Elaine said. “In particular, Kylee Thompson worked tirelessly in the last couple of weeks, to ensure that everything ran like clockwork.” “The club has received plenty of positive feedback about how smoothly the event ran, about what a great atmosphere there was, and how much the locals enjoyed themselves. “The response has been really encouraging and the club will probably book in another Rodeo for 2015. “As the community are aware, the past few years have been financially challenging for the club, so the success of single big events such as the rodeo provide a great cash injection into the Club funds.

A big crowd enjoyed the action at the rodeo Elaine missed out on the excitement in the ring as she spent most of the night in the kitchen preparing food; however she was able to confirm for us that they catered for a very hungry crowd, which is just what you want at a fundraising event like this! If anyone in the community is keen to get involved in next year’s event, in particular as a sponsor, make sure you let Bruce the club manager know as soon as possible so you don’t miss out. Sadly for the club Kylee has decided to leave the club, and the Management Committee really wanted to make sure she knew how much they had appreciated her dedication to making the Rodeo such a success.

NBN towers set for Maleny The on-going roll-out of the National Broadband Network (NBN) has reached the Maleny area, with select landholders in four localities having received letters inviting them to allow a NBN microwave tower to be erected on their property. The towers are part of the fixed wireless broadband system which the Federal Government prefers for less urbanised areas. However, Maleny township is luckier and is scheduled to receive the faster and more reliable fibre cable network. So far, 14 sites where towers will be constructed have been approved across the Sunshine Coast hinterland. NBNCo – the company established to build and operate the NBN system – are inviting the whole community to come to an information session on Wednesday, September 17 from 4.00pm at the Maleny Community Centre main hall at 23 Maple Street. It is understood that at least four areas across the range have been selected where a tower could be located – Mountain View Road (McCarthy Road), Wittaberg Road at Witta, Kilcoy Lane area at Conondale, and a second site at Pinto Drive, Conondale. However, there may be more sites as yet unidentified. Although the new internet service is touted by NBNCo to be far superior to what exists, many locals aren’t happy with the outcome. Local Crystal Waters resident Richard Giles has established a Facebook page – Maleny and
Witta / Conondale NBN Tower Action Group – to connect concerned residents and spread information on what’s happening locally and elsewhere where the towers have been planned. “So far, the community consultation from NBNCo has been woefully inadequate, which is the root cause of much of the angst from landholders,” said Richard. “Their concerns range from possible health implications from the microwave radiation, visual amenity effects from the tall towers, loss of land values, removal of vegetation and the poor effectiveness of the technology. “Although the internet speeds are promised to be better than what most people receive now, it is a poor second rate service we are being forced to accept compared to what would be received if the system was a fibre cable one – such as Maleny township and the rest of the coastal towns will be getting,” exclaimed Richard.
The view from a bedroom window in an area where the towers have already been constructed (photo courtesy Chris McMahon)
Combine this with the reduced effectiveness of the microwave towers in rain, fog and with interference from trees, Richard says locals living in the region will get an unreliable and inefficient solution. Richard suggests that anyone who is unsure about how the NBN towers will affect them, are concerned about being restricted to an inferior network, or want to ask NBNCo questions about their plans, should come to the community meeting on Wednesday, September 17, at 4.00pm. “It may be our last chance to be heard and to make NBNCo realise that we are not going to be
sold a second-rate system with towers placed where Maleny has no choice on location. “We are not going to be treated as second-class citizens just because NBN has a planned rollout which we get no genuine say in,” he said. GCNews understands that NBNCo have looming plans to roll out the tower installation through the Glasshouse Country region. One of their Community Liaison Advisors is meeting with us this week, so we’ll be able to update readers on their intentions in next week’s edition.

Letters from the past
By Ann Snell
The children of Landsborough State School have been immersed in their local history of late, through their participation in their school musical, Letters from the Past. With the school celebrating its 135th year, the musical was written and choreographed by the new creative industries teacher, Melanie Peters. She chose fabulous music and dances and wove a tale of two students who stepped back in time to experience life at the school in days gone by. Every child in the school had a part to play. The children did two performances of their show to full houses of appreciative community members. A musical production of this kind is a huge undertaking, with input from many people, but this one owes its success primarily to the talent and unrelenting drive of Mel Peters. Landsborough School is indeed very lucky to have her.
1914 Students from the Landsborough State School
1895 c.a. Pupils from the Landsborough School Here’s a snapshot of the fascinating history of Landsborough State School. Landsborough School began life in 1879 when it was known as the Mellum Creek Provisional School. Local residents, led by Isaac Burgess, built the building and then partitioned to get a teacher. With only 19 students they had to share a teacher with another school. The teacher travelled on horseback between schools and boarded with local families. The children found the idea of having the teacher living in their home an amusing one. The centre of the original town of Mt Mellum was located at the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Maleny Road, the site of the current roundabout. When the railway came through in 1890, the town moved to its current location near the line and was renamed Landsborough after the explorer William Landsborough who lived in Caloundra at the time. The school was
relocated to its present site and in 1909 it became a state school. A ‘new’ school building was constructed in 1920 and this building can still be seen as the office admin area. Melanie Peters Landsborough’s computer savvy and well-connected children discovered that their predecessors rode horses to school and did their homework by kerosene lamps. They used slates or wrote with pen and ink and ate bread and dripping for lunch- eek!! No packaged lunchbox treats?? Back then children had to pass a test before they were allowed to go to high school and most didn’t go at all. The Landsborough Museum was kind enough to lend the school a genuine long form desk complete with ink wells which was fun for the children to experience. Primarily a community of timbermen, the railway was the major transport system and Landsborough was an important station as it was the junction of the track east to Caloundra and west up the range to Maleny. During the Second World War the rail was used to transport troops and Landsborough was a popular stop. Both Australian and American soldiers moved through, either south to Brisbane or north to participate in jungle training. The locals would put on a dance on Sunday nights and Tytherleighs General Store provided food and beverages. The hotel provided accommodation and refreshment also.

Local author creates unexpected magic By Lea Parkes
Local single mum Charli Winters has recently written and self published her first book ‘Unexpected Magic’ which is aimed at the mid teen to young adult reader, and it is the first in a series called Ethereal Creatures. It is a story of adventure, intrigue, love, friendship and magic that centres around Alaya – a 15-yearold girl who always likes to push the boundaries and go where others dare not. Life as a single parent presents a range of challenges, however in Charli’s case she has the added financial stress of being unable to seek employment outside of the home, as one of her children is profoundly autistic and he suffers from a range of additional medical conditions. Day-to-day life has been quite difficult for Charli over the past two years, but she has been determined to make the best life possible for her family, and to create a financially secure future for them. Ultimately she would like to be able to establish a trust fund so that her son would be able to access the care he will require into adulthood. With this as her motivation Charli is really determined to become a successful author in Australia and internationally. Chari said she plans to achieve this by working hard, continuing to write the rest of the series of books, to promote her work, and if she can prove herself with sales and good reviews then she

BeeGee’s Legends honoured Within any sporting organisation there can be found a group of people who can only be described as the heart and soul of the club. The ones who have put their blood, sweat, tears – and often, money – into building up the club, making it tick and keeping it ticking. They are often referred to as the true legends of our sporting heritage. Sunshine Coast Football (SCF) have decided that it’s about time the soccer club legends across the Sunshine Coast are acknowledged and honoured for their past – and sometimes continuing – contributions to the game. A band of hardy men have been named in the inaugural list of Sunshine Coast Football Hall of Fame Legends. Our local Beerwah-Glasshouse United Soccer Club has a long and distinguished presence in the Sunshine Coast competition since the late 1960’s. It was in the 1970’s that the club became the powerhouse of regional football. During that period, a number of locals associated with the club distinguished themselves and have now been selected as ‘Legends’ of club football, to join the three SCF Immortals (Jim Niperess, Lyle Bryce – who played for BeeGee’s, and Nick Meredith) in the Hall of Fame. In total 35 people from nine clubs were honoured at the weekend’s Premier Men’s Grand Final game and given the title of ‘Legend’. For the Beegee’s Ken Fullerton, Alan Smerdon, Phil Shaw and the late Alan McMaster were chosen from the 1970’s decade as being Legends of the club.
Alan McMaster tackles Jim Niperess in the 1975 Grand Final Current Club President Paul Hughes couldn’t think of four better recipients as foundational ‘Legends’. “Our club was built upon the solid foundations that such people as Ken, Alan, Phil and Alan laid down,” he said. “It’s because of people such as these that BeeGee’s has one of the best club records on the Sunshine Coast. “A club is only as good as the people who – week in, week out – put in their time and effort. “Players, coaches, administrators, officials, volunteers, supporters and sponsors … it’s through them that we’re able to continue to promote a healthy lifestyle through the great sport of soccer,” Paul exclaimed. “I’d like to congratulate all the honoured Legends and their families, and especially the four representing our great Beerwah-Glasshouse United Soccer Club.” To honour our local legends Ken Fullerton, Alan Smerdon, Phil Shaw and Alan McMaster, GCNews will bring you profiles of each of them in coming editions.
Maleny local named as finalist in new media art prize The careers of seven local artists, including Lauren Edmonds of Maleny, have just received a gigantic boost after being named finalists in the inaugural Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2014 New Media category. Councillor Jenny McKay said the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2014 New Media category was open to any emerging local artist aged between 15 to 30 years. “The entries included artwork such as photography, video, animation and projection with a focus on innovative digital technologies,” Cr McKay said. Lauren’s work is entitled News Factory and is described as a New Media installation: 2 projections (1 with sound). The prizes for the New Media category are valued
at $15,000.00 and will be life changing for the winner, providing them with a great start for establishing themselves professionally. The prize includes $2,500.00 cash, a $3,000.00 mentorship to assist and develop the emerging artist’s practice as well as a $2,500.00 public art project and mentoring. In addition to that there is also in-kind design and web promotional advice to showcase at Analogue Digital Brisbane 2015 valued at $2,500 as well as a public exhibition of the artist’s work valued at $2,000 and a four week residency at The Old Ambulance Building Nambour followed by an exhibition at Ground Zero Gallery. For full details about the prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize visit Council’s gallery website www.gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
Music Festival’s youngest ever artist set to perform
Among the many international, Australian and local artists gracing the Caloundra Music Festival stages this year will be the festival’s youngest-ever performer – 12-year-old singer-songwriter Cassi Hilbers of Beerwah. Festival director Richie Eyles said the CMF team worked hard to secure a diverse line-up each year. “There are not many festivals where talented artists as young as Cassi have the opportunity to perform to thousands of people – it’s another thing that makes Caloundra Music Festival stand out,” Richie said. “Cassi is one of many local performers who will take to the stages this year.” While Cassi might be the youngest, she is certainly not daunted by it. When GCNews contacted her she said, "I’m so excited for the Caloundra Music Festival, it’s my first time, so it’s awesome to be singing on the Songwriters Stage, and performing some of my original songs.” “It’s always exciting singing to a big crowd, and I am really grateful for the opportunity,” she said. Cassi’s proud mum Tracey said Cassi has also had a few other exciting things happen lately. She was the Juvenile and Overall Winner at the Homestead Country Music Club’s Youth Expo in August (the first ever Juvenile to win overall champion). With that she won a spot at the Urban Country Music Festival for 2015, and she won the Junior Section of the Gympie Muster Talent Search a few weeks ago,” Tracey said. The Talent Search involved auditioning, and attending semi-finals then finals at the Muster. Cassi won a new Fender Telecaster Nashville Deluxe Electric Guitar and a recording package for an EP through Pacific Music International. Cassi taught herself guitar by watching YouTube and has since graduated from the CMAA Academy of Country Music, placed sixth in the Australian Songwriting Awards (with a song she co-wrote with songwriter Danielle Blakey) and was a finalist in the Youth section at the Tamworth Songwriters Association National Songwriting Competition in 2014. The four-day Caloundra Music Festival 2014 runs from October 3 - 6. Visit www. caloundramusicfestival.com.for more details and to buy tickets.

Public art for Beerwah skate park
I am really pleased about a joint project to improve the visual amenity of the Beerwah Skate Park and underpass. Thanks to a funding grant from the Australian Government, council worked with local community partners to run a public art and graffiti management project, entitled Drawn Together. The project was delivered by professional artists coordinated by The Old Ambulance Station, Nambour who ran a series of art workshops for local young people. The activities were held at the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) and Beerwah Skate Park and the result is a vibrant more locally designed space.
Community benefit from partnership funding
Nine local not-for-profit community groups in Division 1 have received $48,420 from council’s Community Partnership Funding Program to help meet their operational expenses and ensure they can continue to play a vital role in our communities. I congratulate the following community groups: Caloundra Pony Club $3,000, Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Inc $3,500, Glasshouse Country Community Group Inc $7,500, Landsborough Area Community Association (Morris House Neighbourhood Centre) $7,500, Hinterland Community Development Association $7,500, Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club Inc $4,000, Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club Inc $2,000, Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc $7,500, Peachester Reserve for Recreation $4,500, Friends of Bankfoot House Inc $1,420 and Landsborough and District Historical Museum Association Inc $7,000.

I will be available to talk to residents about Division 1 issues on Friday, September 26 at the Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre between 9.00am and 11.00am. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you and discuss topics of interest to the local community.

Mooloolah River Markets – Happy Earth Festival
The weather was just right – and the atmosphere was perfect. And that’s what helped make a great day out recently at Mooloolaba River Markets – Happy Earth Festival. It was not only a day for locals celebrating locally – it was a day for people to come and visit from miles around – many on horseback! My congratulations to Mooloolah Waterwatch for its activities and contribution to the day.
Koala land offset
Putting my environment portfolio hat on for a moment, I’d just like to mention 7,000 new trees have been planted on a 252-hectare land parcel which council bought last year. The trees were planted with nearly $1 million from the State Government as an offset to land affected by the road upgrade from Palmview’s Frizzo Road near Steve Irwin Way through to Sippy Creek Road. Offset agreements are a necessary and important attempt to compensate for the impact of unavoidable development, however this newly purchased land will create an enhanced koala habitat and, importantly, a link to other highvalue environmental areas.
SCARs Monster Garage Sale
The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is one of the best-loved and most worthy charitable organisations on the Coast, and all the staff there all have hearts of gold! Please support them in their quest to raise monies through their annual Monster Garage Sale. You can help by giving them your unwanted goods, which you can deliver to the refuge up to September 24. (But please – not any beds, mattresses, analogue TVs or monitors, pedestal fans or broken/soiled items!)

I will be happy to meet with Mooloolah residents who want to raise any issues about council-related matters in the area. I will be at Kenny’s Café in Mooloolah for the next Mooloolah Breakfast on October 2 between 7.00am and 7.30am. Looking forward to seeing you there. www.gcnews.com.au

Time to join the scouts
Tree problems at Glasshouse Hall
No one ever likes having to cut down a healthy tree, and when that tree is a Jacaranda in a public place … well, people’s hackles could be raised. The Glass House Mountains Community Hall has had to make the difficult choice to cut out one of the Jacaranda trees from the open space next to the Hall in Coonowrin Road. The decision was not taken lightly by the hall committee, but the acidity caused by the falling leaves and flowers was corroding the metal roof of the hall. So the tree had to go. The hall committee would like to let locals know that the land where the Jacaranda was is owned by the hall committee (and not council) and that they are going to replace the tree with three others – just that they’ll be a little further away from the hall, so as not to create similar problems in the future.

Glass House Mountains dad, Edwin Limque has recently taken on the role of Chair of the Glasshouse Mountains Scouts and he is keen to spread the word about our local scouts and to encourage other parents about the value of getting their children involved. Edwin said this year they have a whole new committee and are still finding their feet. We realise that some work is required to build up the number of local children attending, as well as finding a parent who would be interested in taking on the role of group leader for the Cubs, he said. The Glasshouse Mountains Scouts has a long history in the area. However, like many areas, the numbers have been reducing and these days they have Cubs (ages seven and a half to 10 and a half ) and Scouts (from 10 and a half to 14 and a

half) but not the Joeys or Venturers groups. “Being involved in Cubs and Scouts can be a really positive thing for many young boys and girls. They thrive with the social interaction, learning new skills, working in a team environment and developing their own leadership potential while enjoying the activities,” Edwin said. The Scout Den is located on Steve Irwin Way where the Cubs meet on Tuesday night 6.30pm – 8.00pm and the Scouts meet on a Thursday night 6.30pm – 8.30pm. Costs for participating involve an annual membership fee (that covers insurance etc) is $115.00 insurance (payable with term one fees) and then each term a fee of $70.00 is paid. Throughout the year, members are involved in fundraising efforts which provide equipment for the group, maintaining the building and paying the utilities. If you think that Cubs or Scouts would be of interest to the children in your family and you would like to know more then give Edwin a call on 0419 713 388. Big thanks
Contributed by Jessica Raintree The Happy Earth Festival organisers would love to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, workshop presenters, stall holders and of course all the people that came to plant a tree and enjoy Father's Day at the Festival. Financial sponsors for the event included Councillor Jenny McKay, Mandy Evans from Mortgage Choice and Sue Joseph from Basset Barks. Other local businesses that helped out included Robert Keeble Tree Surgery, Keith from Mooloolah Produce and Stockfeed, Daryl Jennings from Mooloolah Mitre 10 and Ben Pettingil. Support from our financial sponsors and local businesses helped to shape this day and bring another great community event alive! The energy was fantastic on the day and it was so lovely to see so many people come to enjoy a day out at the Festival. We are planning another Happy Earth Festival in the Summer! Follow us on Face book (Mooloolah River Market) to see pictures of the event and get updates as to the next event. See page 40 for photos.
Keeping Koalas in food
In September 2013 GMAN held their first working bee with community members participating to establish their plantings for their Koala Food Tree project at Glass House Mountains. On-going work has been undertaken by GMAN members with their most recent work on Saturday, September 6. A few dedicated members (pictured) braved the showers to extend the Koala Tree plantation as part of National Threatened Species Day. The GMAN members would like to invite those in the community who worked on the initial development stages to join them on site on Saturday, October 11 at 3.00pm, to take a look at the excellent progress of the plantings and to celebrate the success to date. If you would like to become involved with GMAN, or are interested in learning more about the project, contact Peter Kluver for more information on 5438 7409 or 0437 148 434.
Dads Day Out
By Mike Turner, Beerwah High Chaplain On Father’s Day we held the second ever ‘Dads Day Out’ event at Skippy Park. Unfortunately this year the weather was not on our side with the rain arriving just hours before we were due to kick off. However, in true Glasshouse Country style, we pushed on. Everyone who came – stallholders and visitors alike – had such a positive attitude making the most of the opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day together. A big thank you goes to Community Recycling Inc. for their generous sponsorship and the team from Little Athletics and Beerwah SES for their wonderful support. Looking forward to having a drier ‘Dad’s Day Out’ in 2015. More photos on page 40.

Memories of the past
Contributed by Jenny Morris There is one question I wish to ask the Glasshouse Country View Club ladies who went on our outing to the Caboolture Historical Museum on September, 3. “How many ladies could remember some of the items on display?” I am sure that quite a few would have had many ‘Memories of their past’ on seeing this magnificent display of old time wares. The highlight of the morning was the flag raising ceremony, as there were 100 school children, and a school band there. The suffragette ladies told many stories of the times in the 19th and early 20th century where women were campaigning for their right to vote in elections. A great morning was had by all, recalling their childhood years. VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women. It is a leading women’s volunteer organisation and support network that empowers women to have their voices heard on issues of importance for the future wellbeing of Australian society. Don't miss the 'Celebrity' Cricket in Maleny Andrew Powell's cricket stand-off against the Maleny Maulers will be held on Saturday, September at 12.00noon. This is definitely not your average cricket game - for one thing, the players take pride in wearing their best pyjamas for a fashion-on-the-field look - all good fun and all for a good cause! Proceeds from donations made before and on the day go to Lung Foundation Australia. Maleny's late Dr Peter Oliver dedicated himself to furthering research into the killer disease after being diagnosed himself - because like so many sufferers, he was a non-smoker. This was the message that Peter found was not getting out there - Maleny's Charity Cricket Match is about trying to change that. Simon Denver's Maleny Maulers have got to be seen to be believed, and plenty of pollies have signed up, so there are some good sledging opportunities for spectators and players alike! There's a barbecue and bar run by hosts Maleny District Sport and Rec Club - just bring a chair and the family and take some time out to enjoy a great afternoon of social cricket whilst knowing you are helping the Lung Foundation Australia, who will be there on the day. Andrew Powell will be joined by the Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney, and Sunshine Coast politicians Mal Brough and Steve Dickson,
Last year's fashion standard was set quite high Steve Minnikin MP Member for Chatsworth, Verity Barton MP Member for Broadwater, Deb Frecklington MP Member for Nanango, Charles Hodgson from View News, Greg Williams President of MDSRC, Nathan Dell (Nugget) Zinc FM DJ, Mick Glover from Network Video Maleny and Chris Emery Director Lung Foundation Australia to make up his Celebrity Eleven. Lighting up Maleny Bowls By Lea Parkes On October 8, Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, will perform the official turning on of the lighting recently installed at the Maleny Bowls Club (located in behind the Maleny Hotel). The Club are really pleased that they will now be able to expand what they offer and are busy organising a six week ‘Twilight Bowls’ team’s competition. Club Committee member, Warwick Moody, said the club was keen to encourage new bowlers to get together a team of three players (can have four members) to participate. While scores will be kept the idea is for the nights to be quite social and enjoyable. “For the past few years the Glasshouse Bowls Club has run this type of evening competition, and what was really great was seeing how many families with teenage children got involved, along with groups of workmates and friends getting together to participate,” he said. Warwick says it doesn’t matter about the difference in the team member’s ages and capacities, as with a bit of practice, they can develop the skills required. “For those that have never played before there will be plenty of club members there on the first night to give you the instruction required to get straight into it,” he said. There will be a once off team registration of $10.00 and then it will cost $10.00 for each player on the night, (where a family of four is sharing the games the cost will only be $25.00). The first night will be Wednesday, October 15 and will kick off at 6.30pm, and pre-registration of the team is required before the night. To find out more about how it works or to organise registering a team give Warwick a call on 5494 9351.
Sunshine Coast hinterland receives thumbs up by better program Maleny has been given the tick of approval for their fresh and local produce by Channel 7’s Karen Martini of television program, Better Homes and Gardens. Coordinated and supported by Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL), the crew recently filmed a foodie segment, based in Maleny. Featuring local vistas, Karen also met with local producers and used a selection of local ingredients to cook up a unique recipe. SCDL’s CEO, Simon Ambrose said “this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Sunshine Coast during prime time on a high rating national program.” This not only puts the spotlight on our magnificent hinterland region but shows viewers we have incredible produce and there is more to the Sunshine Coast, than just our spectacular beaches. Owner of Maleny Cheese, Sara Bucher said they were delighted to be considered for the program. “Our family has worked in local producing for 10 years and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Karen and the Better Homes and Gardens team to share our knowledge of the region and our industry. They simply loved the experience and quality of the region’s produce,” she said. Sara Bucher (Maleny Cheese) and Karen Martini filming at Maleny Cheese www.gcnews.com.au
Everything you need to know about early bird fares to Europe You may have heard that there is a perfect time each year to pick up the best fare on a flight to Europe. These fares are known as ‘early birds’ and right now the season is about to start. It doesn’t last long, so if you don’t want to miss out on these value offers…then here are some facts you must know; who better to guide you than our very own fare specialist Gillian Mills. What is an early bird fare and how is it different? Early bird is the name we use to promote a special sale when airlines release their lowest value air fares in September / October for travel to Europe and for travel commencing from April 1, 2015 and beyond. Early bird season has proven to be the best time to purchase your flights to Europe.
Why is it better to book on one of these fares? Early bird fares can save you hundreds. The seat you sit in will be exactly the same and the service you receive on board identical, but the advantage is purely in your pocket. It pays to be organised and in a position to know exactly what you want when these value fares are released into the market. What sort of savings do you see? In addition to the fare savings, last year we saw $1.00 stopover specials along with a guarantee by some airlines that if they bring in any other special fares lower than the early bird airfare – they’ll refund the fare difference. You really can’t lose. Are there any negatives with an early bird airfare? With all reduced economy fare specials there are always more restrictive conditions. This is one of the things we do really well – Gillian will translate the fare conditions into layman’s terms, so you understand exactly what you’re purchasing, as some of these fares can be non-refundable. It is also wise to purchase your travel insurance to protect your investment. You do not pay any extra for insurance by purchasing it in advance, at the same time you purchase your ticket. For example, if you are away May 1 to June 11, 2015 – 42 days, you just pay the applicable premium for those 42 days. Should an unforseen circumstance occur any time prior to your commencing your journey, you are covered for
amendments and cancellations. Note: but these are always subject to policy conditions. Do all airlines have them? Generally, all the major airlines ex Australia offer early bird specials. The offers will vary depending on the airline and your destination - you will be amazed where you can travel to! Do they apply to all classes of travel? Not all the airlines release fares in all classes, but last year, we found that if one airline decided to offer a Premium Economy or a Business class early bird fare then others would follow. Is it only early bird airfares that are on sale? No! Lots of different providers take advantage of this early booking period. River cruising companies, car, coach, and other specialist tour operators offer specials in conjunction with early bird fares and in addition to their usual promotional discounts. There are also car leasing and car rentals for Europe, also free pre or post (one night) hotel accommodation, as well as discounts for past guests on coach tours, and early payment discounts. All in all, it’s just a great time for those wanting to travel to Europe for the best value possible! And why Maleny Cruise & Travel? Our role after talking with you is to research which fare offer will best suit your requirements. Do remember to talk to us about your whole itinerary even if you are flying / driving / coach touring / river cruising into regional European cities. We know we can make your dollar fly further…

In any year, one in five Australians experience a mental illness – so why are so many people reluctant to talk about it? Members of the Glasshouse Country and Hinterland communities are invited to join conversations about building on our already resilient and supportive communities, during a special Mental Health Week Community Lunch on Thursday, October 9. “Whether you realise it or not, everyone knows someone who has experienced poor mental health – to think that such an issue is sometimes treated as ‘taboo’ is unacceptable,” Care Connect Sunshine Coast Hinterland support facilitator Tina Searle said. “Improving and maintaining good mental health is important for everyone, at all stages of life – we need to normalise not only the experience of mental health difficulties, but also the act of speaking openly about them. “By talking openly about mental health and mental illness, we empower people to seek support without fear of stigma, and we improve the wellbeing of our communities.”
The Mental Health Week Community Lunch is part of Mental Health Week, which takes place across Australia from October 5 - 12. Lunch will be followed by guest speakers, including Health and Human Services Consultant Nadine Thomas, who will facilitate a discussion on mental health, and representatives from organisations supporting people experiencing mental illness.

Community day showcases Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’s future Another exciting chapter in the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve’s history is about to begin with the building renewal project coming off the drawing board and heading towards community input. Two architectural concept designs have been developed and will be shared with the community in numerous ways, including a community day on Saturday, September 27, from 10.00am to 4.30pm. Sunshine Coast Council divisional councillor Jenny McKay said there was still a long way to go for this project to become a reality, but finalising design concepts and costings and undertaking community consultation were critical aspects to successfully attract funding. “Both concepts include a welcome and orientation area, rainforest ecology, a living lab and research section and a kids’ education area,” Cr McKay said. “Another section represents activity in the rainforest between dusk and dawn, giving visitors a full sensory experience of sound, light and visual displays to take them on a journey of discovery. “The concepts include an area where visitors can enjoy the history of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and surrounding areas through an interactive digital display.
“Here, visitors will learn about local indigenous history, industry, European settlement, community groups, gifting of the reserve and the Thynne family. “One of the most important areas is the conservation space which shows how visitors can get involved. “They’ll be empowered with the knowledge they have learnt from their experience and encouraged to put their learning into practice. “Throughout consultation, the community told us the cafe was an important part of the experience. Both concepts evoke a rustic charm through use of timber, with a fireplace being a central feature. “The design allows for a kitchen fit-out for optimum catering. The cafe area offers a welcoming atmosphere, so visitors can enjoy a meal, relax, socialise and appreciate the hospitality. “It will also highlight the stories found in the centre, provide seasonal information and showcase the efforts and knowledge of the volunteers. “This area will reflect the community heart and celebrate their achievements,” she said. Cr McKay said if successful in attracting funding, the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve building renewal project would help Sunshine Coast Council and its community partners better deliver on the Thynne
sisters’ Deed of Trust which promoted exhibiting the reserve’s stunning flora, fauna and scenery. “But most importantly, building upgrades will be sensitively designed to fit in with the look and feel of the reserve and the footprint will not extend beyond already disturbed areas.” Cr McKay said two architectural concepts had been developed by Maleny architect Norm Richards and Guymer Bailey Architects, closely guided by the stakeholder-based Design Advisory Panel, while the Reserve discovery plans were prepared by Focus Productions in conjunction with local cultural heritage expert Steve Chaddock. The advisory panel includes representatives from the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Management Committee and on-site stakeholders such as Volunteers and Friends of Mary Cairncross, Maleny Rotary Club, University of Sunshine Coast, Maleny Chamber of Commerce, Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast and Cr McKay as divisional councillor. Consultation with Jinibara people is in progress and local historians and experts on flora and fauna and natural and cultural values have also contributed towards the discovery plan.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Noah’s Basswood Polyscias nodosa
If you are looking for a fast growing tropical small tree with stunning palm like foliage look no further than Noah’s Basswood. This beautiful small tree grows to around 5 metres in SE QLD and is often seen as a multi trunked tree. Its large palm like foliage complements a tropical rainforest garden and its fragrant cream flowers are followed by reddish black bird attracting fruit. It prefers a moist well drained site and grows best in full sun to semi shade. In the wild it is found in rainforest from Iron
Range in Far North Queensland down to the Conway Range south of Proserpine. You only have to go as far as our nursery grounds though if you want to see some lovely four-year-old specimens that are currently in full flower.
If you would like to find out more about some of Australia’s most amazing flora and the fauna they attract then drop in and see the team at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980 or 0448 509 139. Email: info@gogreenrainforestnursery.com.au or visit or website at www.gogreenrainforestnursery.com.au Open to the public Monday to Saturday 9.00am until 4.00pm.
Orchids bring spring to the hinterland This year will be the 37th year the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society has showcased the spectacle of the world’s orchids in Beerwah. On Friday and Saturday, September 26 and 27, the Beerwah Hall will be a mass of variety, colour and perfume with hundreds of orchids, as the clubs of the Sunshine Coast region join with Glasshouse to showcase their hobby. As well as society displays, there’ll also be wonderful floral art creations and, for the first time, orchid photography to engage your interest.
There’ll be talks on various aspects of growing, so you can pick up helpful hints; plant sales where you can ask for advice on what to buy and how to grow it; you can stock up on pots, growing media and accessories. Or you can simply meet with friends to share the experience, and then chat over morning or afternoon tea, or a light lunch on the deck. You’ll also be able to try your luck with the raffle, and buy colourful floral arrangements to take home. A visit to Glasshouse’s annual spring show is a really great way to welcome spring. Opening times are Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday from 9.00am to 2.30pm. Admission for adults is $2.00.
Peachester District Horticulture Society Contributed by Patricia Bradford Members received a warm welcome from Brian at Theo’s Garden Centre for the July meeting. Thanks to Theo Beenders who was the original owner of the Garden Centre many years ago for arranging the visit. President Coral Beutel passed on condolences to Jenny Wellstead, our secretary, on the recent sad loss of her mother, and also to remember members and former members who are experiencing health problems. Many thanks to all members who worked so hard to make our Friendship Day in July such a success. Some of our members enjoyed a bus trip to Gympie recently to an orchid show and visiting an orchid nursery. Nessie Pratten thanked everyone who visited her to celebrate her 95th Birthday. She mentioned that flower buds had all been picked off one of her new succulents. Suggestions were that birds were the most likely culprits. Then came the best part of the day, exploring the nursery and choosing plants to purchase from the huge selection on offer. Many thanks go to our hosts, Bruce and Judi Whitfield, present owners of the garden centre, for their hospitality. As some members of the committee will be absent in September, it was decided that there will be no meeting this month. We welcome members and visitors to the next meeting on Thursday, October 16, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. For more information phone 5496 9169, Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer).
Little Tom Lilly Pilly launch
The Shine for Thomas Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organisation which seeks to raise funds for awareness, support and research regarding a life threatening condition called rhabdomyolysis and a little know genetic cause in children - LPIN1. Through their campaign, the founders of the charity are keen to get the message out about the symptoms of the condition, warning signs to look out for, and importantly that it can affect even seemingly healthy kids. By increasing public awareness of the condition, where muscle cells become stressed, and leak protein into the bloodstream, parents and carers have a chance to recognise the early signs of rhabdomyolysis and potentially save their children's lives. In a bid to raise further awareness, one of the founders of the organisation Andrew Olive, a local wholesale nursery owner-operator, developed a very special lilly pilly in honour of his son Tom who passed away from the condition. Named ‘Little Tom’, the beautiful bushy shrub has edible fruit and will attract birds to the garden. At the beginning of August, Andrew and his wife Trudy, along with their family, attended The Spring Green Expo at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, where the Little Tom Lilly Pilly was officially launched. The lilly pilly will be available at Plants Plus as well as Bunnings and Masters.
Andrew, Trudy and family at launch of the Little Tom Lilly Pilly at the Spring Green Expo On each of the plants is a label that has information spreading the message about the foundation, its website and Face book page. One hundred % of the royalties from the label will be donated to the Shine for Thomas Foundation. The tree grows out similarly to a Christmas tree, so the foundation is currently looking at the possibility of approaching local schools with a view to donating one to plant, that in turn will continue to raise public awareness. Hot stones and cupping both relieve chronic pain, sore backs and necks, stiff muscles and promote relaxation. Hot stones are heated and placed on trigger points to relax the muscles before the therapist begins deep muscle massage. Cupping uses glass suction cups on the skin to loosen muscles and encourage blood flow. Our therapists also specialise in sports massage. All massages are covered by Health Funds.

Living Father’s Day Raffle
Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley There are some great benefits to volunteering with the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information and Interpretive Centre. Our volunteers are known as Ambassadors as they are true representatives for this region. Some people want to volunteer to give back to the community or share their local knowledge. Others enter retirement and now have the time to help out, or it may even fulfil a Centrelink requirement. The one thing all Ambassadors have in common is the pleasure they get out of the experience. New Ambassadors start with a friendly induction in the centre, this usually takes place over a cuppa and is very informal and provides a good understanding of how the centre works. Once a person decides when they would like to volunteer, they are put on a roster with an experienced member of staff for support and guidance. During those first months, opportunities will arise for visits to local and regional tourism operators and accommodation providers. Known as familiarisations or famils, these trips are a great way to gain first-hand knowledge about the tourism products and experiences, and provides the opportunity to
meet other Ambassadors. Over the year, a rotation of these visits occur, usually at a rate of two a month. Aside from transport, famils are free, always interesting and enjoyable. Within the centre the role changes for each person, some choose to add to their experience by taking on different jobs, others are very happy to assist travellers and chat. It usually becomes evident to those that wish to do more, they tend to spot something and suggest they can help in that area. There is even the opportunity to do chats for schools, this is something that has become more popular in recent months, with the schools realising we have a great facility with space and plenty of historical and geographical information available. There are also opportunities to engage coach groups in our beautiful area from time to time. I am available on Monday mornings at the centre. I invite you to please call in for a cup of tea and find out more about becoming an Ambassador. Also, watch this space for details about an upcoming morning tea for old and new volunteers.
The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm
Locals share in historic journey
Over the last two weeks the Beerwah Library has hosted the Gubbi Gubbi Gun'doo Yang'ga'man exhibition allowing locals to gain a rare insight into traditional Aboriginal bark canoe making. A highlight for the community was having the opportunity to join Lyndon Davis, a project artist, for a talk and a bush tucker afternoon tea last Friday. Locals that attended the event, where he shared his journey as a key artist in this unique project, were captivated by his story. The Gubbi Gubbi canoe builders include Lyndon Davis, Brent Miller, Nathan Morgan and Kerry Jones. Watercraft is an important, relatively unexamined aspect of Aboriginal heritage Kodi and Karlin from in Australia. It is believed to be more than 150 years since a traditional bark canoe has Glass House been seen on local waterways. Across south-east Queensland the skills and traditions of bark canoe making have been largely lost. The Gubbi Gubbi Gun'doo Yang'ga'man research and reconstruction project has sought to fully investigate and revive the Gubbi Gubbi tradition of bark canoe building. This exhibition documents these activities and promotes the project’s national significance and value for the community. It marks the historic revival of an ancient tradition and showcases many of its forgotten aspects. This canoe building revitalisation project ensures that these long held traditions survive further into the future by creating a legacy for generations to come. In response to the letter by Kane Thornton from the Clean Energy Council, I agree that Australia deserves much better than the politically motivated recommendations of the RET review panel to close or slash the program. The Renewable Energy Target has been very successful in its goal of improving the proportion of renewable energy contributing to our electricity supply, and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that go hand-in-hand with coal and gas-powered electricity. Like thousands of other householders on the Sunshine Coast, I’ve been able to put solar panels on my roof with the assistance of the RET program, and have the satisfaction of knowing that I’m making electricity that doesn’t contribute to air pollution or climate change. I’d like others to have the opportunity, but closing or slashing the RET will take away that opportunity for many, as well as sending many small renewable businesses broke. Furthermore, billions of dollars of investment and future jobs in large scale renewable energy projects won’t happen if the rules are changed mid-game by changes to the RET. I call on the government to ignore all the ridiculous recommendations of the panel, and leave something that is working just as intended alone. Liz Harris Landsborough

Re: Save the forest
In reply to Dr Glaister's letter in GCNews (edition July 30) I would be pleased if he could advise the details of the survey whereby the off-road motorcycling enthusiasts and the wider community ‘welcomed’ the proposed facility in the Mooloolah logging area? As well as how will such a facility reduce risks / dangers associated with the current illegal riding? How will this be policed and what penalties will be applied? P Wallace Palmview
NBN Tower Action Group
In Maleny district the NBN/Ericsson team company has arrived with their plans for a roll-out of broadband towers across our landscape. At the moment we have as a community group, identified four sites for towers where they will be at least 30 metres (and up to 40 metres) high in some places, dotted across our landscape. The plan for Maleny involves at least four towers and maybe more. It’s been hard to get information out of Ericsson/NBN so far. Beerwah is likely to be the next township on the NBN agenda and the roll-out is being done as fast as possible to reach a target before the next elections. The way NBN works is to send letters of request to homeowners with land they identify as suitable for an NBN tower. If any of your neighbours get a letter from NBN asking for a tower site please make the area where you are public, while keeping identities confidential. NBN promises community consultation, however their record on real consultation in the Gympie Council area and in Northern NSW is very poor. You may wind up with a tower right next to you if your property is out of town, and you'll have little chance to ask for other locations, or even lobby effectively to NBN for changes. Check our Facebook page - Maleny and Witta / Conondale NBN Tower Action Group. Richard Giles Conondale

Great work
I would like to acknowledge and recognise the great work the Queensland National Parks & Wildlife Service has undertaken in our area in particular the upgrading of the walking tracks on Mount Ngungun. The upgrade of the walking tracks has proven to be very successful and well supported by our community and visitors to our region. The upgrade of the park provides many dividends for our community. It provides an opportunity for people to connect with nature whilst offering a wilderness adventure. This has positive benefits for our communities both emotionally and physically. It also provides economic opportunities for our local businesses as visitors are more likely stay for greater lengths of time. I support the continued investment in developing and maintaining our national park estates in the Glass House Mountains region. This is in collaboration with our community, stake holders and other interested parties. Bernard Keays Glass House Mountains

Halls Creek – speak out before it is too late!
The message I am receiving loud and clear is that people in the community still do not know what the Halls Creek issue is about! Are you one of these people? Do you enjoy a semi-rural lifestyle? Did you come here for the unique character of the Sunshine Coast? Do you love boating, fishing and swimming on our beaches and Pumicestone Passage? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions no doubt you will be upset by proposed changes which could see the area become like the Gold Coast i.e. a Noosagatta! We all expect some changes over time but think of this---Caloundra South, already approved and ready to start, will mean 50,000 homes or another 150,000 people using our roads, schools, beaches and hospitals. This area is south of Pelican Waters and will encroach closer to us in Glass House Country (please don’t refer to us as railway towns). But that’s not all! This Government and developer Stockland want us to accept another massive development further south again i.e. Halls Creek which will reach close to Roys Road. And if you are a local business person, don’t think this development will help your business. Stockland will have a shopping centre bigger than Chermside in Caloundra South. What then for local businesses? As for the interurban break between Sunshine Coast and Moreton Councils, it has been whittled away over the years, and will soon be just a memory. It is time for everyone to speak out on this issue. Attend one of the information evenings in your local area. Don’t become one of those people who jump up and down and complain when it is too late. Gwen Malcolm Glass House Mountains www.gcnews.com.au
Disappointed
I was disappointed that P. Wallace called my letter supporting the climbing of Mountains Tibrogargan and Beerwah an ‘ignorant rant’ and ‘tirade’. I’ve spent 50 years criss-crossing Australia, visiting numerous Aboriginal towns and settlements. A highlight was a two-week trip with four Aborigines from Coober Pedy to Emu, Surveyor Generals Corner, Mt Woodroffe and Ayers Rock (they called it that) in 2007. During my trips I made a number of brief friendships with local natives and sometimes play golf with an Aborigine at Beerwah. Ignorant? I don’t think so. An ex-policeman neighbour tells me any cathedral spire climbers would be charged with ‘public nuisance’ (not desecration) only if the church complained. Mountains are for climbing, steeples are for admiring. I took a long time to write my own feelings and the support I’ve subsequently received from friends and acquaintances (the ‘You said it’ letters page has a very wide readership) reinforce my belief. If you don’t agree with me, don’t shoot the messenger. A friend and former administrator of Northern Territory Aboriginal settlements made two valid comments: The biggest problem tribal elders have is not people climbing over ‘their’ mountains. Modern distractions such as TV, internet, gambling, grog, social media, sugary foods and drinks and decreasing parental control are making the passing down of their mythological beliefs so much more difficult. At the Ayers Rock climb is a well-produced sign introducing the local Aborigines and their beliefs to tourists. In part it asks that the Rock not be climbed, leaving the climbing decision up to the visitor. Why don’t we do the same? As I said originally, I’m happy for Aborigines to retain their beliefs, but they shouldn’t over-ride my legal rights. Roger Bonhomme Glass House Mountains
Mis-information super-highway
Whether it be by radiation emitting towers, or less controversial (but unlikely) cables laid in the ground, the result will be the same. The roll-out of the NBN will mean the information superhighway will come at us at a greater rate than ever before. But it can also be the Mis-information superhighway so we can be brainwashed or led astray more speedily than ever. Where is all this high technology heading? Will the world soon be run by robots? I would suggest that by 1975 we had technology sufficient in this country for a comfortable lifestyle. By then Australia had colour TV, pop-up toasters and Holden had created the HJ Kingswood. It could only be downhill from there. We got along fine without computers and mobile phones. What is happening to our social skills? Some studies are indicating the volume of time some of us are spending on the internet is translating to increased levels of anxiety. Perhaps most worrying of all is a new statistic being collected in the US - growing numbers of people suffering injury as a result of walking into posts - or oncoming traffic while transfixed to their iPods. Is the current proliferation of zombie movies a subtle warning of where we may be heading? Are we already there? I say switch off and unplug, and please Mr Turnbull, take your towers elsewhere! Jon Woodlands Maleny
Basic road rules apply
As anyone using the Glasshouse intersection knows it can be very tricky to negotiate and potentially very dangerous to those who are unfamiliar with it. There are no signs to indicate who needs to give way when crossing, that is why basic road rules must apply. It is very concerning to me as I live on the opposite side of the intersection and cross into town quite often. I have had quite a few near misses due to people not following basic road rules. For people who aren’t regular uses of the intersection - if you are using it to turn right towards Beerburrum, you must give way to traffic across the road from you whether they are crossing or turning, as they have the right of way. Sad for the Twinnies
Earlier this year I came up with a fundraising idea for the Twinnies Rescue Base. I’m happy to say that over $400.00 has been banked to date. But I was disappointed this morning (September 13) to discover some person/s had vandalised the Wishing Wells overnight and taken just short of $200.00 which was raised on their behalf. This was not robbing me personally, but the entire community that had placed donations into the Wishing Wells, and the Twinnies. I’d like to thank the person passing by whilst my husband was repairing and re-constructing the wells today that gave $5.00 to start the wells again. Yvonne Taylor Beerwah
Just disgusted
When on a walk this afternoon (Saturday) on the pathway behind the Aged Care Home at Beerwah, I was disgusted to come across the mindless destruction of several trees that are planted along this path. The trees have been destroyed and strewn over the path and then beer bottles have been smashed over the path. It has been sad enough to see the hundreds of beer bottles that have been uncovered in the undergrowth since the fire went through this bushland and now we have idiots thinking it's fun to break trees and smash beer bottles on the path. Sad to think this is someone's idea of fun. Marilyn Podmore Beerwah

Holiday Fun
It can be hard to keep things fresh and interesting at home sometimes; with the abundance of house chores, not to mention work, yard maintenance, sport and all other things that go into spelling that big four letter word ‘LIFE’. One interesting, amusing, or exciting thing you can do this school holidays, is make up your family’s very own ‘Holiday Sorting Hat’. Now you can’t travel to Diagon Alley or Hogwarts itself, but you can load it with all types of mischief and funnery (that’s a word no matter what spell check says; because I just said it is; and I’m a dad!) Now there are 16 days of fun to be had this September holidays, so for a family of four that’s at least four activity wishes each. Many of us still have work, but summer is approaching so there’s enough sun hanging around in the afternoons to allow for some fun. Lay out some rules and parameters for the kids (and partner if they are an imaginative ‘act-first-
with the Superdads
think-second’ type like me) and then get all family members to write their activity wishes on separate pieces of paper and enter them into the Holiday Sorting Hat. Then every morning/afternoon (your choice), dig in and find out what the Holiday Sorting Hat has in store for you. You’ll have your family doing things they normally wouldn’t do together, and this will more than likely be accompanied by a dash of smiling and a course of laughing. If you’re short on ideas here are a few to get you started; a picnic in the beautiful grounds beside the beach at Point Cartwright; a game of tenpin bowling; a board game around the table; fishing; pitch the tent in the backyard and have a sleep over; put a few mattresses down in the movie room and watch movies, eat lots of popcorn and fall asleep; a trip to the shops just to buy lollies; afternoon tea at Montville; make a special dinner with each family member in charge of a course. Most importantly though, have a great holiday and have fun.
The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them. www.superdads.com.au

Does your child suffer with learning difficulties, reading, auditory processing, attention and regulation, sensory processing, speech and language or Autism and other neuro-developmental difficulties? We at The Healthy Guru Beerwah offer a comprehensive program designed specifically for the individual child including Integrated Listening System (iLs), Kinesiology, Nutrition and Emotional Stress Release, facilitated by our experienced practitioner Emily Bundesen. iLs is a multi-sensory program for improving brain function. It is an enjoyable activity, or ‘exercise’ which can be customised for all ages and skill levels for implementation in the clinic, school or home. iLs has a global effect on the brain and central nervous system, influencing the following systems: balance, visual, auditory, motor, co-ordination, behaviour and emotional regulation. As a result, it is successfully implemented for a wide variety of conditions. iLs is used in conjunction with Kinesiology achieving great results. Kinesiology balances the body’s energy pathways assisting clients both physically and emotionally, together with an individual nutrition plan, which is designed to improve brain function and to facilitate all body systems. This provides all the ingredients for rapid improvement and is also inexpensive. For more Information - www.thehealthyguru.com. au/home or phone 5439 0097.

Kids martial arts coming soon to Glass House The Matt Fiddes brand of martial arts combines a number of principles and techniques from a variety of martial arts styles. These include kickboxing, tae kwon do, karate and ju jitsu and extends theses skills with tools that teach self awareness and discipline. The highly regarded children’s program gives students one of the most unique methods of martial arts training on the coast. The way the program is taught is different to other traditional techniques, as it combines practical age appropriate self-defence skills, with positive emotional development. One of the features of the kid’s program is the 10 minute ‘mat chat’ discussion that is central to every class. In these discussions, the class sits down and discusses topics like loyalty, self discipline and respect. These chats feature a different topic each week and allow the kids to focus on
building self confidence and character whilst developing meaningful life skills. Other empowering skills that are focussed on include; mind over emotions - so that kids can learn to channel anger and frustration into more positive avenues and simple personal safety. Another feature of the kid’s program is that where extra guidance is needed; the Matt Fiddes martial arts program can work closely with the students’ schools to incorporate a positive behavioural management plan. Currently the Hinterland program liases with Landsborough and Elimbah State Schools with plans to expand to Beerwah and Beerburum Schools. From October 14, a brand new Matt Fiddes martial arts school will be opening for children in Glass House. To be held at the Glasshouse Community Hall, two programs will be operating on Tuesday afternoons - a junior program for ages seven to 12 and a ‘Mighty Matts’ class for ages three to six. For more information about these exciting, transformative and fun classes, contact Taylah on 1800 840 403.

School News Special Father’s Day Chapel competition. The challenge was for students to create the biggest beard for their dad using Vaseline and cotton wool. Girls and boys giggled and laughed as they smeared and dabbed at their dad’s chins and cheeks. Another highlight of the service was hearing from Youth Pastor Mick Spann about the challenges of being a dad. To the delight of the audience, Pastor Mick pretended to wash his jacket with flour to prove the point that even though dads are wonderful, they may not know everything and could sometimes use some help.
For the first time ever Glasshouse Country Christian College held a Father’s Day Chapel for all the dads with students in Prep to Year 2. Dads were greeted at the door with (chocolate) kisses and treated to a lively concert before being dragged up on stage for a couple of challenges. The first one was to find out which dad was the quickest at drinking cordial from a two-foot straw. The second challenge was the messiest, but drew the most laughs from the audience. Clean shaven dads were asked to be in the best beard
Landsborough IGA supports Chaplaincy
The team at Landsborough IGA were more than happy to support local Landsborough State School Chaplain Linda at their annual Golf Day on Sunday, August 3 at the Beerwah Golf Club. The day was a success with 81 players turning up to enjoy a day in the sun in support of their local Chappy. Pictured is Landsborough State School Chaplain Linda receiving a Community Chest cheque from Landsborough IGA Owner Casandra Grigor.

On September 3, Beerburrum State School held their annual Adidas School Fun-Run and raised $2,890.00 in extra funding. Students pounded the pavement seeking sponsorship from the local community to raise money for their school and thanks to their donations extra funds are now available to provided assistance with the Footsteps Dance Program in Term 4. Adidas School Fun-Run organiser, Jason Jenkinson, is extremely proud of the way the students rallied behind the health-based fundraiser. “It was great to see so many students supporting their school by collecting sponsorship and participating on the day,” Jason said. The Adidas School Fun-Run provides a platform for schools, sporting clubs and community groups to raise extra funding, while encouraging participation in healthy and active lifestyles.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church I don’t know if you have taken the time to look at the families of the Bible. Frankly when you think about them many of them take the fun out of dysfunctional. Take Abraham the Father of the faith. He pimps his wife out - twice. He sells his old but hot wife Sarah off into harems - twice. Then she says to Abraham, have sex with another woman. And Abraham thinks, what a great idea! Isaac another ancestor of the faith, together with his wife Rebekah had twins and both parents had a different favourite. Talk about a recipe for sibling rivalry. Jacob (Rebekah’s favourite twin) also played favourites – his favourite was Joseph. He shows it by giving Joseph a coat of many colours. He may as well have painted a bull’s eye on his son’s clothes. And Joseph unwisely rubs it into his eleven brothers - no wonder they wanted to kill him. Solomon a drunk, overachieving sex addict, has a murdering philander as a father (yes it is King David). Solomon’s half-brother lusts after and rapes his step sister and dad (David) wrapped in his own grief and unworthiness, does nothing.

Even God, the perfect father has wayward children - children who no longer speak to him. Even God the perfect husband has divorced his beloved bride Israel (Jeremiah 3:8) after his wife had multiple affairs on Him. The bible is full of dysfunctional families. In a sinful world we can expect nothing less. So what hope is there? As I look at the dysfunctional families of the bible, strangely it gives me great hope. God used these families and all their mess to achieve his purposes. God didn’t write them off he used them to change the world and the cosmos. God understands some of the things I go through because of my family. Why? How? Because God has been there, done that. Finally it gives me hope that nothing is impossible with God even my dysfunctional family. Enjoy reading about them in the Bible. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

CWA kids holiday workshop
Learn to knit using recycled plastic bags over the school holidays. Plastic bags are recognised as a major waste of plastic and threat to our environment. There are many ways we can reuse and recycle them. Knitting with the plastic is a creative way of using lots of bags with a fun and long-lasting result. The CWA Beerwah is encouraging kids to come along to their free workshop to be held on Tuesday, September 30 from 1.00pm to 3.00pm and Thursday, October 2 from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. In the first workshop participants will spend time learning the basic stitch of knitting. Participants are welcome to return on the second day, to see their knitting transformed into a 'yarn bomb' on a tree within the CWA grounds. For further details, or to make a booking to this fun workshop, please call Debbie on 0400 027 591. All materials supplied.

This is the new venture for Kelvin and Joy Brady – albeit not so new to the real estate industry. Most locals will already know Kelvin from his many successful years of selling real estate in Glass House Mountains and the hinterland. They have spent the last six weeks getting set up and running from an office in Beerwah. They have now made the smooth transition into the permanent location, in the newly refurbished office space, at Glasshouse Centre right next door to the newsagent. Both Kelvin and Joy are extremely enthusiastic about taking this next step on the real estate career path, working for themselves and employing longtime local, Tracy Clow-Lindsay in office administration. Please pop in and visit the office with a fresh new look and people eager to list properties to sell. Nothing makes a salesperson keener than a window waiting to be filled with places to sell and sold signs on them. Spring is the season to leap into action, have a spring clean, spruce up the house and put it on the market. So if you’re thinking of buying or selling, please pop into the new office, introduce yourself and let them take the lead to help you along the way to your next new venture. Please call Kelvin anytime on 0429 003 338 for a free market appraisal.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Looking after our waterways
After months of minimal rainfall, our waterways were looking a little sad; however recent falls have increased flows and washed out the silt and algae. The frogs are singing again, the ducks are happy, and many insects are frantically laying eggs into the pools while they exist. Healthy Waterways' ongoing monitoring has shown that the health of the streams of our area, the Pumicestone Catchment, declined in 2013, from C+ to C-. This included an increase in nutrients and a decline in the health of stream life. The health of our streams is not only important for wildlife that reside in and around them, but also for ecosystems downstream. Our streams all empty into the Pumicestone Passage, a unique area important for recreational and aesthetic purposes, and as a natural ecosystem, including a DIWA nationally important wetland. Healthy Waterways recorded a slight improvement in the health of the Passage last year, from C- to C+, which is still a poor result. This is a fragile environment, and it is evident that any new developments within the catchments or along the Passage itself could impact severely on the health of local ecosystems. To protect waterways, reduce or stop your use of fertilisers and pesticides, and plant stream edges and bare ground with native plants to filter any runoff of sediment. Never tip toxic materials out indiscriminately as all stormwater eventually reaches natural waterways. And talk to politicians about your concerns about the effects of proposed developments on our waterways. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au
Community tree plant in Peachester
The hard working Friends of Cahill's Scrub (FOCS) have been slaving away clearing weeds, (mainly lantana), since April last year. We have cleared over 1,000 square metres of scrub and planted some trees. There has been an encouraging amount of natural regrowth but to help nature along council are sponsoring a community tree plant at our next meeting on Saturday, September 27 at 9.00am at 5 Jeanne Court for morning tea and a briefing. Jeanne Court is accessed off MacDonalds Road, by way of Wintergreen Way. We are planning to plant around 500 trees with the help of the local community. Naturally we would appreciate all the help we can get so we would love to see you on the day. Beautiful lagoon in the Cahill Scrub Reserve
Kids take action for our environment
Around 300 local youngsters from 25 local schools came together recently for the third annual Kids in Action Conference, hosted by Sunshine Coast Council through the Environment Levy. Students from Beerburrum State School, Beerwah State School, Ananda Marga River School and Conondale State Schools took part in the conference which gives the opportunity for students in Years 5 – 9 to stand up and become the teachers. Over two days, the kids shared their environmental knowledge with each other across a range of subjects using workshops, presentations and displays. Topics range from turtles and the reef to toxins and waste. Maleny based Co-ordinator Karen Shaw said ‘The Kids in Action’ conference is an inspiring event where kids share their passion and knowledge with great confidence. “The program is linked to the National Curriculum, supported by local environmental educators as mentors to schools and provides students with a real life application for classroom learning. It is an amazing experience to be a part of,” she said. “The Kids in Action Conference aims to inspire the Sunshine Coast’s future environment leaders by growing a culture that values caring for our precious natural assets.”
Trauma season strikes our Aussie wildlife
Spring is upon us and as the weather warms, breeding wildlife on the move become vulnerable to the booming holiday season leading to the busiest and most confronting time of the year at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, known as trauma season. In the period from August to February, staff at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital note significant increases in wildlife admitted for injuries caused by trauma. The patients seen most often by vets are those who have sustained injuries caused from being hit by cars and attacked by domestic dogs and cats. Drogo the koala is one such patient, brought to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by a wildlife carer from Currumbin after being hit by a car. Drogo is currently receiving treatment in the hospital after suffering a fractured left femur along with a fractured right scapula, bruising to the chest and abrasions to the face. Sadly, Drogo’s story is not uncommon. Koalas, possums and birds are the most frequently treated patients at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, often suffering from trauma inflicted by man-made situations such as car contact and domestic animal attacks. Koalas just like Drogo are especially difficult and costly to rehabilitate, with some patients requiring years of care, food and veterinary treatment sometimes costing in excess of $10,000. Dr Amber Gillett, Senior Veterinarian at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is encouraging the public to be cautious and aware that the warmer months are when our Aussie wildlife is most active and at risk of injury. “Our expanding human footprint is intensified by roads and pets, leaving wildlife prone to conflict,” Dr Gillett said. “It is devastating that we see so many trauma cases when these injuries are easily preventable by adhering to speed limits and being conscious of our pets, especially at night when koalas and other nocturnal wildlife are on the move,” she added. Eighty koalas are currently in care at the wildlife hospital as well as various other species suffering from trauma. Every donation helps the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital save lives. Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Monica Dangerfield With Spring well and truly in the air, 63 players lined up to do battle for the October Monthly Medal, with winning trophies being donated by club professional, John Mellish. A Grade net winner for the day was Val Turner (her 3rd medal for the year), with a score of 68 Val Turner, John Mellish, Josie Thistlethwaite, and Cath Cherry
nett. Runner up, Sonya Kenway with 70 nett, and Gross winner Andrea Campbell with 83 Gross. Winner for the B Grade medal was Beth Butler with a lovely score of 66 nett, closely followed by Cath Cherry with 67 nett. Cecelia Proud had the best Gross score for B grade with 88. C Grade winner, also with a fine score of 66 nett, was Josie Thistlethwaite, followed by Rosemary Collins with 69 nett. Best Gross for C Grade was won by Di Smith with 103. Nearest the pins went to No 2 Andrea Campbell, No 5 Cindy Godfrey, No 16 Lyn Steele, and No 18 Sue Williamson for A division, and Majorie Pavitt for B division. The ball run down went to 73 nett, and the best putter on the day was Sonya Kenway with 27 putts. Well done ladies.
Grand Final battle
After having a difficult start to the season, the Under 12 (2) Green team boys finally found their feet and managed to battle their way to the Grand Final. On Saturday, the green army gathered on the edges of the pitch to support the only Beegees team remaining with a crack at Grand Finals glory. For the majority of the game, the teams battled neck and neck, with neither willing to give any ground. Beegees had the majority of the possession, but could not find the final ball that would lead to a goal. With 10 minutes remaining on the clock, the ball was played out of defence, up to our speedy winger Josh Mcmullin who played the ball thru to Quinten Bissinger who made a dashing break
away, and, after beating the keeper, drove the ball into the waiting net. Driven on by the encouragement of the wildly excited supporters, the boys held the opposition at bay to claim grand final victory.
BeeGees Premier Women Fall in Grand Final Hurdle
Contributed by Mark Arrindell (Manager) BeeGees Coastal Women Green who won the Premier title sadly failed to add the ‘icing on the cake’ of a Grand Final win on Friday, September 12. The first goal of a bruising first half, where not a backward step was taken, had an element of luck to it: a speculative shot / cross looping over the keeper and into the net. BeeGees then dominated the rest of the half but were denied by a spectacular save by Maroochy keeper, Katerina Bredhauer from an Ashleigh Topfer strike. Chances came and went begging. The second half was just as hard fought with BeeGees keeper Sharntae De Joux bravely coming off her line on a few occasions to catch or kick away dangerous raids. She was injured eventually after a goal mouth melee saw the second goal trickle over the line. BeeGees ‘player for all positions’ Mel Adamson went in goal for the rest of the game and did an excellent job. BeeGees desperately fought to get back into the game and never gave up; Chelsea Carroll ending up at A & E for the night after a knee to the ribs. The presentation ceremony had a certain irony in that it started with BeeGees’ twin strikers, Cecily Arrindell and Ashleigh Topfer being awarded ‘golden boots’ for being the top scorers in the normal season with 13 goals each. BeeGees captain, Abbey Bates, paid tribute to the opposition for a well-deserved win on the night. She also praised her own team for an excellent season and thanked coach Michael Topfer and management for their efforts. As manager I would also like to thank referee Vicky Clark and the linesmen for keeping a battle of a game flowing, and both teams for playing in good spirit despite giving no quarter.

On Track for Nationals Contributed by Cameron Taylor Fighters from San Taekwondo Beerwah and Maleny competed in the Brisbane Open Taekwondo Championships last weekend with great results. The team of four fighters – Aaron Lerch, Cameron Taylor, Leo Michael and Michayla Neale finished with five gold medals and one bronze. Aaron and Michayla each contested two divisions and won gold in both. Aaron’s two fights finished in exciting sudden death overtime. After their success earlier in the year at the state titles, San Taekwondo will send five athletes to compete at the national titles, being held in December in Adelaide. Coach Norm Taylor said that he is confident that his athletes will be very competitive at the event and he hopes to build on the success of last year when they finished with a gold and a silver.

Just for Laughs Pastor's business card A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Early in the week you may see people in exaggeration which prompts you to respond to bring them back to earth. It may have something to do with credit. With the Moon in a favourable sign for you mid-week sees concentration on financial matters that help your credit. The weekend sees you renewing ties. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Mid week sees you easily distracted or lost in a dream about how you would like things to be. By the weekend you have lost your illusion of Robin Hood coming to your help and the Leo Moon brings harmony to make up for any earlier bad moves. A very productive weekend wired for communications. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Whether it is friends, co-workers or your partner, you need to allow leeway where reasonable. At the weekend don’t push for any commitments, as the Moon in Leo will exaggerate people’s hard feelings. Mid-week sees a much better result in social contacts and business income. Success in some wishes. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Earlier this week we hope you have been sharing your buoyant mood and bubbly stories. You are at your charming best with your family and parents mid-week. A professional upset may toss an old secure elder into disarray. The weekend sees you waking up early to pursue life with renewed enthusiasm.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 If you have a partner give yourself and your partner time to sort out thoughts and feelings, otherwise this week, if either of you feels hurt or wounded, it will show. Mid week the Moon swims through the sign of Cancer and much will depend on how you handle the moods and attitudes of other people. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Early in the week you have enjoyed the cool intellectual approach of reading the latest political bulletins. Mid week there is a slight instability with the Moon in Cancer but that means to check your diet for a sensible natural quality. Easy mid-week to fall for an enticing tall tale. Don’t build your future on it. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Mid week the Moon in the super sensitive sign of Cancer, a partner could do something unexpected or out of character which catches you off guard. If it sorts out an unusual travel plan then ride with it as the weekend sees the Moon in Leo full of possibilities of taking risks that pay off big at this time. ARIES March 21 – April 20 With the Moon in the next couple of days, moving through the sign of Cancer, you may not see things clearly causing you to overreact or jump the gun. It is just probably your need to break free from a confining rut. Take a breath and rewind; perhaps get up early one morning for some lively activities.

TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Inaccuracy can lead to misunderstands in your work life. Just be sure that you have other people’s facts straight before you leap off the deep end! Just for the next week make plans for your personal life rather than just play it by ear. The Moon swimming through Cancer makes for busy family matters. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Early this week the Moon was in your sign to enjoy projects that needed organising. By mid-week with the Moon changing signs to Cancer you suddenly have a wild imagination and a boost in self-esteem. The weekend is much better for you with the entertaining Leo Moon for bright companions. CANCER June 22 – July 22 You are favoured mid-week with the Moon in your own sign. All that is necessary to do is to make sure you have other friend’s facts straight in their emotional distress. Avoid fretting as it will only prove pointless. Sometimes family matters and disagreements are hard to bridge in age or with philosophy. LEO July 23 – August 22 If you expect good things to happen they often do, especially if you have the right plan ready for this next weekend. It’s then the Moon will be in your sign. Mid-week you must not give in to impulse spending. If you buy on the spur of the moment it may not be something you want or like in the long term.

Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis 3:10’. Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.' Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

GCNews & Maleny News ... Bringing the family back together Our History Glasshouse Country News was established in May 1986. Back then, it was started as a sister paper to the Maleny News (which eventually changed name to the Range News). Yes – the Glasshouse Country News and the Maleny News were once part of the same family. At that time the newspaper was printed on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. With the region's rapid growth and development, the newspaper eventually became a weekly publication producing 48 editions per year (with a break over Easter and Christmas). Ownership of the paper has been very stable and very local. There have only been three owners of the paper over the last almost 30 years – all of them local and all being owner-operators. Originally, the distribution area covered from Beerburrum to Landsborough. The circulation has expanded to incorporate the townships of Mooloolah, Glenview and Palmview … and now Maleny. Over the years the paper has evolved in format and form, but the
underlying approach is still the same. We are – and always have been – a traditional local community newspaper that focuses on the lives, events and activities of the local community. As the entire focus of the newspaper is on the local region, it has the most in-depth coverage of local stories and issues and, as a result, is the most widely read paper by the local community. So in reality, by re-establishing the Maleny News brand, we’re bringing the family First edition 1986
What We Stand For
True independently owned and operated weekly community newspapers are few and far between. Over time they have either been taken over by the mega-media conglomerates, or have been forced to close down.
But Glasshouse Country News has proudly resisted the forces of ‘big media’, enjoying a solid reader and local business loyalty. This is no accident … it’s because we get it. We get what a community wants from their community newspaper. We live locally as do all of our staff, we shop locally, we eat out locally and are very much part of the local community. We acknowledge how important our advertising clients are as a vital part of the on-going success of the community newspaper. We encourage outside input and genuinely value what others have to say, and are open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. We work hard to develop strong relationships with all our contributors and advertisers to deliver the best damn newspaper we can. We put back into the community by supporting and sponsoring local events and groups – including being the media sponsor for the Maleny Show. In fact, over the past three years, this support for community events has totalled over $60,000 in value. Our friendly staff are always there to help and provide advice and support. Our office is open eight hours a day, five days a week. You can meet the owners … the person who designs the pages and ads ... the person who writes the stories … the person who does the accounts … or the person who takes the classifieds.
Meet the Owners … Lea Parkes and Greg Brown

Before the newspaper took over my life 10 years ago, I was the Media and Public Relations Manager with Caloundra City Council, and before that the Queensland Weedbuster Week Coordinator with the Department of Natural Resources. I’m the Managing Editor for the paper, and generally the person you’ll talk to if you have a story to tell. When we first purchased the business, we initially operated it with a small but dynamic team of employees. As the business expanded, it then became time for Greg to leave his environment job with the Sunshine Coast Council to join me and the team in 2008. He then took on the role as Finance / Business Manager, as well as writing the environment / gardening stories (and making up the crossword and sudoku). Coming from a background in bush regeneration in New South Wales, then working for 10 years with the Department of Natural Resources on the Sunshine Coast in weeds and feral animal management, then another five years as the weeds and feral animal coordinator for
Council, I think Greg sometimes misses being in the great outdoors. We are really proud of the growth, expansion and development that we have been able to achieve with the dedicated and enthusiastic staff that make up GCNews today. As well, we are proud of the great partnerships we have formed with the many community groups, sports clubs, churches and schools, knowing that the support we have provided them has helped to grow and develop their organisations.
