Hi Everyone

O

ver the past few years, we have been regularly approached by members of the Maleny community letting us know that they like our publication and asking us to print contributions about community events in Maleny. Where possible we have done this, and since late last year we have also been bulk dropping papers into a number of locations in Maleny, gradually expanding the number of papers we supply as the interest in GCNews grows in the Maleny area. For the first time this week we have included a special feature – ‘Meet Maleny’. It’s interesting as the businesses that have chosen to participate, also happen to offer products and services many of which we don’t have the full variety of in our business mix, in the townships of Glasshouse Country. We hope it gets you thinking about making the journey up the hill for a day out. Regards,

Get real behind the scenes and volunteer The Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival is on again, and the annual celebration showcasing good local food and produce is looking for volunteers. Returning to the Maleny Showgrounds over the weekend of September 13 -14, this year's event promises to be an authentic display of food that has been either grown or produced in the Sunshine Coast bioregion. Based on the principles of good, clean and fair, this fun family day out will inspire visitors with passionate producers and chefs, stalls, demonstrations, discussions, entertainment and other activities. Last year’s event attracted over 8,000 visitors and so behind the scenes help is being sought to make this year’s festival another huge success. Event organisers said a strong theme from the visitor survey conducted after the 2013 Real Food Festival was how wonderful the volunteers were. Whether it was ‘hitting the reset button’ in the demonstration kitchens in between presenters, picking up rubbish, reuniting lost children and parents, or handing out Show Bags at one of the gates, the 100 volunteers were applauded for their attention to detail and genuine care. Importantly for the Festival, and the region, was that the volunteers greeted visitors with big

smiles that welcomed them to Maleny and the Hinterland. This year’s volunteers are offered free entry on the day(s) they work, a Festival apron and water bottle, in exchange for three hours of their time. Prospective volunteers are invited to email Dana Paxton on dana@realfoodfestivals.com.au to register their interest. Head along and be part of the team!

Meet Holden’s Galley Address: corner of Coral and Myrtle Street Maleny What would you like our readers to know about your business? Operating for over 10 years in Maleny, owners Phil and Jennifer have recently bought the entire stock of the retiring business Maleny Art Supplies, and relocated it to the gallery. In a bid to cater to local demand and provide a comprehensive range of available artist supplies, they will be dramatically increasing the stock range with a bumper shipment of additional products arriving this week. The range will include, paints (oils, watercolours and enamels) and will compliment the already core business specialising in customised picture framing. Enjoying customers returning from all over the hinterland and beyond, their framing business builds on a reputation of quality, craftsmanship and service. Holden’s Gallery also offers a small range of handmade gifts and is open every day (except Sunday) from 10.00am until 4.00pm.

Meet Maleny Cruise and Travel Address: 39 Maple Street, Maleny Maleny Cruise and Travel have provided exceptional service with comprehensive and individually tailored advice for the people of the Hinterland and Range for over 20 years. Agency owner and Manager, Gillian Mills and Senior Travel Agent Nicola Rowlingson, make up the highly professional team at Maleny Cruise and Travel. Gillian brings over 50 years of industry experience and knowledge to the role and Nicola was recently recognised in the top five senior travel consultants across the whole country. To be a finalist in the prestigious 2014 Australian Federation of Travel Agents awards in the category of Best Retail Consultant is a significant achievement for both Nicola and the boutique travel agency, particularly considering that they were competing with candidates in large corporate travel companies.

Meet Paradise Furniture and Décor Address: Shop 2 / 12 Bunya Street, Maleny After moving from Alice Springs with their five children in 2013, Sandy and Harry now call Maleny home. They have settled into life in the rolling green hills and haven't regretted the move for a moment. Because of the shortage of work on the Sunshine Coast they decided to create their own income and set up their own business. From there Paradise Furniture & Décor was born, opening its doors back in May. They have been receiving great feedback about their fantastic prices and the range of products they carry. As one of their customers summed up quite accurately on Facebook the store is ‘A veritable treasure trove! With friendly service and great prices!’

Labor Party announces candidate for Glass House Maleny local Brent Hampstead has been confirmed as the new face of Labor for the electorate in a launch last Thursday. To a crowd gathered outside the Glass House Mountains tourist information centre, Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mulherin said that, as a local small business owner with long family ties to the area, particularly in dairy farming, he knows what makes the Hinterland tick. “Brent will be a strong local voice for the Glass House area,” said Tim. Mr Hampstead, 48, said he was looking forward to the challenge of taking the fight to the LNP in Glass House. “I suspect though that the upcoming election campaign will be the toughest challenge of my life yet and I’m looking forward to working with the local community to fight for a fairer, better

deal for Glass House.” One strong supporter is former local member Carolyn Male (now Ferguson), who said that with his experience and background, Brent is ready to represent Glass House. “I know Brent and he’s more than willing to get out there, listen to the community and fight for the people of the Glass House electorate,” Carolyn said.
