Valuable home library service The residents of Blue Care Maleny Erowal Aged Care Facility continue to experience the magic of reading and learning thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Maleny Library home library service. Division 5 and Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said people love visiting their favourite library as it offers a fulfilling experience. “However, there are some borrowers who cannot for one reason or another access a library and that’s where council’s home library service comes in,” Cr McKay said. “This region-wide service is wonderful as they deliver books directly to the borrower’s home, or in the case of Blue Care, to their Erowal aged care facility. “This regular service relies on the support of wonderful volunteers who deliver and return books and other items. “They also offer the valuable social contact that people receive when they visit their favourite library which is a real community hub and meeting place.” Blue Care Volunteer Co-ordinator Roma Burrell praised the Maleny Library staff for assisting their volunteers to select books from the Sunshine Coast Libraries collection. “Sustaining residents’ love of reading and learning was something our centre had a keen eye on doing for some time before Maleny Library offered their wonderful program,” she said. “The program has been running successfully for several years and involves delivering books directly to our resident’s rooms and importantly they suit the interests of each individual.

“Some residents who used to read a lot have changed to audio books and like most avid readers they are good at imagining while they listen to their stories. Ms Burrell said she would also like to thank the Friends of Maleny Library and Rotary for supplying CD players and ear phones. They have been an enormous help as they come with a special USB connection. “I have been a Volunteer Coordinator with Blue Care’s Maleny Erowal Aged Care Facility for several years and I cannot express my gratitude enough to the staff and volunteers of the Maleny Library,” she said. To find out more about the home library service call 5475 8989 or visit council’s library website www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to view the extensive range of benefits as a library member. For more information about Blue Care please visit www.bluecare.org.au.

Aged care that focuses on you When you visit Embracia in Woodford for the first time and walk through the front door, you can be assured that you will be welcomed by a friendly staff member, who is more than willing to assist you with your enquiry. This caring approach by the staff is just one of the elements which creates a very warm and

happy environment for both the residents and their visitors. It transforms it from a residential aged care facility to somewhere that aged people can live and receive the care they deserve. Great efforts are made to create a familiar and homely environment, such as featuring professional photography of local scenery through the complex. Individual shadow boxes are found outside the resident’s rooms for them to display items that are significant or personal to them. Also included are purpose built facilities such as a library, café, hairdressing salon, theatre, chapel and for the gentleman to get some time out, there is even a ‘Men’s Den’. Residents also have the option of an in-room telephone service with a direct-dial phone number and WiFi internet connection so they can stay connected with their loved ones. A splendid feature is the lovely communal areas where the residents can enjoy spending time

with family and friends who come for a visit. One such area is the well-appointed family dining room, which is perfect for special events and celebrations. However, the best way to appreciate the facilities is to see it for yourself. Phone their friendly staff and book an appointment to have a tour – you will definitely be impressed.

Embracia in Woodford

Daphne Chase, Resident We use to drive around Woodford all the time and I pointed out to my daughters … “This will be my new home!” So now I am here, I feel very lucky I am enjoying all the activities and the food is beautiful – 10/10. All the staff are really great and support me in every way. I am really enjoying life here. There is a freedom … not being frightened of falling nor worrying about my health.

Embracia in Woodford, I am glad to call my new home! Keitha Viney, Wife of resident Richard Viney – Jinabara Memory Support Community I heard that Embracia were building a new home at Woodford which would have a smaller number of residents residing in the Memory Support Community. So I decided there and then that Rick, my husband, should move to Embracia in Woodford. I am really happy with the situation here, it is warm and friendly and the staff are very conscientious. Every time I am here the staff are interacting with all the residents and my husband is contented.

I have also recommended this home to others

Learn about retirement villages Many seniors think about moving into a retirement village or caravan park as a way to downsize when the family home becomes too big for them. Lawyers experienced in the field of retirement villages will discuss important questions on Wednesday, August 24 from 1.00pm - 2.30pm at the Beerwah Library and on Friday, August 26, from 10.00am 11.30am at Maleny Library. Questions that will be answered on the day include what is a retirement village?

What is the difference between a retirement village and a manufactured home park? What does it cost to buy into a retirement village? What sort of ownership will I get: Freehold, leasehold, license, company title? Are there costs I will have to pay while living in a retirement village? What happens if I become too ill to continue living in a retirement village? What happens if I die while residing in a retirement village? Attendance is free, however bookings are essential, phone 5475 8989.

Is lack of sleep killing you? by Bryce Perron MD CPAP Direct Don’t ignore the snore! Sleep quality is more important than sleep time. Sounds like a bold statement but it’s general knowledge that the three main keys to staying in shape are … correct diet, exercise and sleep. Sleep is often overlooked as a priority in our busy lives and it is that vital to our overall wellbeing that many of us suffer without being aware. By design, we spend one third of our life in bed – more time than we spend in our car. And the environment we sleep in will have a direct impact on our body’s ability to heal and regenerate. People with sleep apnea are often among the worst snorers and lack energy during the day. CPAP can help with this but if the bed we’re lying on isn’t physically supporting us in the anatomically correct position, our health may still be deteriorating faster than it should. Diabetics often have circulation problems or

www.gcnews.com.au

experience swelling of the legs. People with lower back pain, arthritis or reflux also need to make the bed environment a priority. More often than not, we sleep on a piece of furniture and not an adjustable bed that is a GST-free device designed to help us live healthier lives. The Ultimate Sleep System from Wenatex is now on show in our local stores, and has many benefits to aid quality sleep and posture. The mattress zones progressively adapt to individual body shapes for side and back sleeping. With a firmer lumber section, and softer shoulder and calf sections, they promote correct sleep posture, and improved sleep patterns. They are also laced with silver to aid in

hygienically controlling bacteria, and there are optional herbal regeneration inlays with 17 herbs triggered and activated by body heat during the night. If you don’t feel like you’re getting the most out of life, talk to the experts at CPAP Direct about how we can improve your sleep environment, revitalise your energy levels and give your body the best chance to get the most out of the third of your life you’ll spend in bed. Video reviews and more information on our Wenatex range are available at www.cpap.com. au, or call 1300 133 298.

Probus – 15th birthday

Contributed by Gordon McCormack After 15 good years, the Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club felt it right to have a birthday, and two of our original three members Valerie and Ruth cut the cake Fred deferred to the ladies. Keith and Valerie Inglis, with half a dozen of the local families, got the Probus Club going in 2001 and it has lived up to all they wished. With 38 members at the first meeting the club has grown steadily to 50. This is a Club where everybody takes responsibility in a family way to keep it happening. As always you’ll get some Ruth and Valerie cutting who walk the extra yards to make it work our birthday cake smoothly and over time we have recognised them. With special Club commendations going to Judy and Keith, Marita and Stan, Pam, and June and Ruth. We have honoured Keith, Valerie and Gordon with Life Memberships. We’ve enjoyed over 100 guest speakers to spread our minds as well as gone on delightful outings on which our Fellowship prospers. We also recognised the marvellous support of GC&M News as a medium for keeping us in touch with our community – we record our thanks. We have had at various times over our 15 years, a number of sub groups such a Tai Chi, choir singing, Mah Jong, play reading and most recently music appreciation to widen our interests. We enjoy rewarding ‘chat’ mornings as well as sharing lunch at one or other of the local nosheries which give us a lovely togetherness. As President Peter summed it up, in 2000, Keith Inglis expressed the hope that all members would contribute to make this a happy, harmonious and progressive club and it certainly has. If Probus sounds like it could suit you, give Gordon a ring on 5439 0446.

Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law, formerly King Tobin Lawyers, are your local solicitors and have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.

Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.

Ta king • C rur • E Ad • F Div

the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.

Advance Health Directive You may wish to instruct us to draft an Advance Health Directive for you. This document specifies the level and degree of intensity of medical care you wish to receive in certain situations. It runs in conjunction with your Enduring Power of Attorney and it is therefore very important that it does not conflict with your Enduring Power of Attorney, which unfortunately we have seen regularly when either of those documents has not been drafted by a qualified solicitor. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for us to assist you.

F:

Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to

New dental prosthetist in town Brian Stuart-Nairne is your dental prosthetist at Beerwah. A Hinterland local, he and his family have lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 40 years. Highly experienced, Brian has been practising dental prosthetics on the Coast for over 35 years and is a qualified BPS provider which is the most advanced denture system available today. He also brings over 30 years’ experience in implant dentistry to the practice. Dentures need regular maintenance and yearly checks are advisable. Full dentures usually require relining at 3 - 4 years, and replacement at 7- 8 years. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the bone supporting the teeth shrinks at a very slow rate continually after teeth are extracted. The upper jaw shrinks upwards and the lower jaw shrinks downwards. This causes the space between the two jaws to increase and then the lower jaw needs to rise further up to make the teeth meet to chew (called ‘over-closure’). To make matters worse, the denture teeth wear and this increases the distance further and consequently causes more over-closure. The result is loose dentures, food under the denture, ulcers, the loss of a pleasant smile, a ‘no tooth’ look, eating difficulties, increased facial wrinkles and sometimes joint pain and dysfunction. Regular obligation free checks with Beerwah Denture Clinic can avoid these problems and correct any necessary problems as they arise.

The Beerwah Denture Clinic provides the latest, most advanced dentures available today. They also provide both metal and plastic partial dentures including hidden clasps, mouthguards, relines and fast repairs. For client convenience, they can offer relines in half a day and one hour repairs if required. Some full dentures, especially full lower dentures, may cause great discomfort and very poor chewing ability due to bone loss over time. This bone loss results in severe denture instability and poor function and increasing discomfort. The solution is to place two implants and retainers and the denture clips to these. The denture can still be removed for cleaning but is reassuringly stable during daily function. This economical implant process is a relatively painless procedure and can be performed in Beerwah to provide vastly improved comfort and function for the denture wearer. For those wanting to say goodbye to removable dentures—fully fixed appliances are available. Brian is part of an experienced team that can offer fixed implant retained appliances that can do away with dentures completely! This option usually suits those who have suffered advanced bone loss, find wearing a denture difficult to tolerate or just want to get rid of their dentures forever. An additional advantage is that it also leaves the roof of the mouth uncovered to allow feeling temperature and sensing taste better.

Isobelle Payton and Dental Prosthetist Brian Stuart-Nairne Their new clinic at Beerwah is fitted with the latest equipment and an in-house dental laboratory to provide you with the best available dental care in the shortest possible time. They can repair broken dentures in one hour and reline dentures in only half a day. They are a provider to DVA, private health funds and conveniently offer Hicaps for immediate refund on health fund rebates. With easy car parking available in front and behind, the new clinic is located at 74 Simpson Street, Beerwah, next to the Aldi carpark. Appointments can be made with Isobelle on 5439 0388 or just drop in next time you’re in town.

MOMENTS

Taking care of your future

With many seniors today proactively planning their future, it is important to look for support options being available to those downsizing their homes, but not their lifestyle. Maleny Grove Manager, Greg Guilford said the retirement community of Maleny Grove was a popular and affordable choice as it allows seniors to unlock home equity to live in the location, lifestyle and environment of their choice. “Maleny Grove offers a low maintenance lifestyle in spacious, award winning environmentally designed homes that promote physical independence, together with the availability of supported living options as needed,” he said. “Maleny Grove facilities and landscape have grown since its opening in 2010 with the inclusion of a heated pool and spa as well as a community vegetable and herb garden, putting green, off leash pet enclosure and resident workshop. “The village takes advantage of its beautiful location with free standing and duplex villas offering a low maintenance lifestyle with a supported living option allowing you time to do the things you enjoy most.” “In today’s environment, the children of many retirees remain in the workforce and are not always available to assist parents as they need, so supported living options is an important consideration in the lifestyle decision process.” This allows families to share quality time together and provides a sense of independence in not having to rely on family and friends for assistance,” Greg said. Choosing a retirement community that is the best fit for individual needs is an important decision. For your personal inspection of what Maleny Grove has to offer call us on 1300 556 575.
