Senior Moments Living the life at Maleny Maleny Grove continues to embrace the wider community with recent sponsorship of Mapleton Bowls Club Jacaranda Day and the annual Range Croquet four day competition. Village representative Andrew Acocks who attended the event said Mapleton Bowls Club enjoyed a very successful day. “There was a roll up of 64 players including visiting members of six coast bowls clubs while Range Croquet is expecting a lively competition between club members and visitors,” he said. Since opening in 2010, the award-winning designed Maleny Grove has very much become part of the local community providing sponsorship of events and with various groups including Blackall Range Care enjoying the use of the Clubhouse for some of their activities. Maleny Grove manager Kaye Smyth, brings to the village over 25 years’ experience in the retirement living and aged care industry. Kaye said it was lovely to see the sense of community that had developed within this very supportive village. “Residents have come from the local area and interstate seeking a more relaxed retirement environment. With freedom from the worry of house and garden maintenance, residents can enjoy activities within the village and those of the many clubs offered within the wider community,” she said. Maleny Grove promotes the philosophy of ‘Your Home, Our Care’ which gives individuals the choice to be as involved or as private as they choose, with the knowledge that discrete care support is available as required. Glasshouse Mountains Probus What is Probus? We're an association of retired and semi - retired folk who meet monthly with the idea to keep our minds active, share our interests and enjoy the company of new friends with our main goals fun, friendship and fellowship. Our club is simple in structure and free from the constraints of a service club so we're not a fundraising body, rather we're self-funded with no obligation to any outside activity or association. We manage the Club's business with a 10 person Management Committee who meets on the first Wednesday of the month. This optimises our time for the regular second Wednesday meeting of the general membership. This general meeting involves a half hour element to update the members, then a half hour smoko break followed by a guest speaker, and we've been fortunate to have informative and entertaining guests. We're done by 12.00noon and then it's lunch - we prefer a venue where we can BYO to share and the Beerwah Hall - ideal for camaraderie - it's just right. Our fourth Wednesday is billed as our outing for the month. This may be to organisations, or activities or places of current interest to members including one or other of our back yards for a barbecue. In between we do have a delightful monthly musical morning, a Book Club and an afternoon Mahjong group every fortnight. We also have occasional functions such as our ‘Xmas in August’ luncheon, at Landsborough this time, and routine monthly ‘Upcoming Entertainment Events’ for our enjoyment. We're a band of 50 plus members, and it's of interest to you come and have a look. Phone Gordon on 5439 0446.

Age no obstacle to Peter exercising The oldest member of the Beerwah Heart Foundation Walkers group, Peter (aged 87), was recently presented with an award by the group’s convener Frank Cockram, to commemorate his completion of 500 Heart Foundation walks. Peter said that walking regularly is not only beneficial to one's heart health, but recent research by brain scientists has shown that regular walkers can reduce their risk of dementia by almost 20%. The group has a repertoire of over 60 local walks, some more adventurous than others, and caters for walkers of all ages and various degrees of fitness. The Heart Foundation Walkers meet at the Beerwah Library car park at 6.20am on week days, and welcome new walkers to their ranks. Phone Frank on 5494 0709 for further information.

Karen Beckett - Hollywood to Broadway Celebrate the Christmas season and final Judy Henzell Sunshine Melodies Concert series performance for 2015 with Karen Beckett – Hollywood to Broadway. Karen will take to The Events Centre stage on Wednesday, December 2 with the greatest songs of the 20th century from theatre and cinema. Karen Beckett is one of the most popular cabaret performers in Australia today. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Karen moved to Sydney in her late teens to pursue a career in entertainment. Before long she had performed on all major Australian Television variety shows and won a 36-show engagement at the MGM Grande Hotel in Las Vegas. This was followed by national tours with Bob Hope and Neil Sedaka and the release of Karen’s first album, ‘Romantically Inclined'. Karen’s sensational voice together with the professional and charming nature of her performances led Bill DeAngelis, Director of Entertainment at the MGM Grande to comment, "I have no doubt the whole world will hear of you Karen”. Her versatility in both cabaret and theatre also landed her the leading role of 'Fantine' in an Australian production of ‘Les Miserables’. Karen has recorded three albums, ‘Romantically Inclined’, 'Here to Eternity' which receives airplay both in Australia and Europe, and her latest CD 'When Somebody Loves You' featuring timeless ballads from her cabaret shows. Karen loves to sing and has entertained audiences all over the world. She weaves her show with fabulous songs and delightful anecdotes from her life. She’ll sing the songs of your life and your memories. Don’t miss an opportunity to experience this wonderful Australian entertainer. The Events Centre, Caloundra will host this event on Wednesday, December 2. Show starts at 11.00am with a complimentary morning tea at 10.00am. Giving up licence made easier for older drivers
The State’s peak motoring body has urged families to have the conversation with older relatives about the right time to hang up the car keys following the launch of a new service by the State Government. RACQ welcomed the recent initiative for seniors to receive a free proof of identification card and partial refund after surrendering their licence. RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the decision to give up driving could be daunting. “We want Queenslanders to talk to older family members and have them consider their ability to continue driving,” Mr Spalding said. “The decision to stop driving may be due to medical reasons or a diminished capacity, and previously that meant older people were left without suitable identification. “We believe any initiative to make the transition from driving to being offthe-road easier is a good thing.” Mr Spalding said there were a number of transportation alternatives for seniors no longer driving. “Many people believe handing over your licence is the end of your independence, but it doesn’t have to be,” he said. “There are a number of transport options available including taxis, community shuttle buses and public transport.” Mr Spalding said in Queensland, drivers over the age of 75, as well as drivers with medical conditions affecting their ability to drive, were required to carry a medical certificate when driving. “If you have concerns about a family member’s ability to drive you should contact your local GP.” RACQ’s YouTube video ‘When is it time to stop driving?’ can be viewed at http://goo.gl/a5Etzh.

Invisible hearing aids? ihear brings you the world’s smallest hearing aid – SoundLens from Starkey. Every day thousands of Australians with hearing loss, struggle through conversations instead of enjoying the rich sounds that life has to offer. Hearing loss can be very isolating and have a significant impact on relationships and emotional states. Don’t miss out on those special moments with family and friends because of hearing loss. There are many reasons why people choose against seeking a solution to their hearing problem. Some incorrectly believe a hearing aid won’t be able to solve their type of hearing loss. While others fear the social stigma of ‘old age’ that has been in the past associate with wearing hearing aids. And let’s face it, no one wants to feel like they are getting old! Leading hearing specialist ihear, is excited to share the solution for those who say “…you will never see me wearing a hearing aid”. The SoundLens is the world’s first completely invisible hearing aid, and is custom made for superior comfort. It is so tiny that it sits inside the second bend of the ear canal, offering complete invisibility. Despite its small stature, the SoundLens is packed with the most advanced hearing technology to date, resulting in natural sound amplification and superior clarity for hearing speech in background noise.
Business feature
Local hearing expert, Audiometrist Lisa Burley from ihear Caloundra is certainly impressed. “The SoundLens is truly amazing and incredibly popular with our clients because it simply can’t be seen once it’s in the ear,” she said. “Hearing speech in noise is something that has previously been a challenge for hearing aid manufacturers. The SoundLens has overcome this challenge like never before, resulting in easy
listening for the wearer that reduces listening effort and mental fatigue in noisy environments”. Today 50% of Australians with a hearing loss are below retirement age, so it is no wonder that there is a high demand for an invisible hearing solution. “As the world gets louder, the age of those with hearing loss gets younger. The effect of noise exposure means we are increasingly seeing people in their 40’s and 50’s coming to us with a hearing problem,” said Lisa. 80% of the population will lose some of their hearing as they age and research shows the majority of people wait from seven to 10 years before they do anything about their hearing difficulties. The longer people wait to have their hearing needs addressed, the lower their chances of rehabilitation as the sensory receptors in the brain deteriorate over time if not kept active by sounds. Why put off getting your hearing checked when a hearing screening takes about 15 minutes and it could change your life for the better? At ihear, they have a wide range of solutions to suit all types of hearing loss, lifestyles and budgets. For more information contact ihear on (07) 5492 6939. Conveniently located in Beerwah, Caloundra, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Maleny, Maroochydore, Sippy Downs and a new location in Landsborough.
