Now is a good time of year to consider servicing your garden machinery before the mad rush of summer. After limited use during the slower winter months all machinery needs a look over, both for safety and to save time when you need it. The fully qualified staff are always more than happy to

Pararchidendron pruinosum var. pruinosum In the garden this stunning small tree provides a spectacle of fluffy white to greenish fragrant pom pom flowers, turning later to yellow from October to January. The seed pods themselves are flattened and twisted, pale yellow on the outside and brilliant red / orange on the inside with shiny black seeds. Snow Wood is found from tropical, sub-tropical, warm temperate, littoral and riverine rainforests from north Queensland to the Illawarra region in NSW making it a very versatile rainforest specimen. Snow Wood is a graceful looking tree due to its lacy light green leaves and its dark reddish trunk which is not buttressed at the base, making it an excellent choice for street plantings and gardens.

and plant lettuce seedlings in them to take home and grow,” Julie said. Costa is a landscape architect who has an all-consuming passion for plants and people – he knows how to bring out the best in both of them, and takes great pleasure in bringing them together. Costa believes in embracing and celebrating mother nature’s cycles and seasons and nurturing her balance, beauty and bounty organically. His holistic approach is all about gardening the soil and the soul. For more information see the story on page 3 visit the website at www.realfoodfestivals.com.au
Gardening Guru Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia will be joining in the fun at the Real Food Festival this weekend in Maleny. Costa, a gardening enthusiast who is passionate about sourcing local ingredients to use in cooking, will be sharing the limelight with students from Montville and Conondale State Schools who are involved in Stephanie Alexander’s Kitchen Garden program. Stephanie Alexander created the Kitchen Garden program in 2001 to encourage kids to learn how to grow and cook their own fruit and vegetables. Festival Director Julie Shelton said that having Costa on board to help the local kids share what they learn was very exciting. “The kids from two of our local State Schools are thrilled that Costa will be helping them out during the festival. “Among other things, Costa will be helping the kids recycle used coffee cups from the festival

The Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflower Festival Committee has produced a handy new self-guide set of walks for residents and the general public to enjoy the wildflower season this Spring on the Sunshine Coast. Covering the region from Beerwah to Noosa North Shore, 10 of the most botanically diverse and accessible walks have been described with detailed walking maps. Information on track grades, facilities, and directions have been included.
On the back of the guide, 42 of the most commonly found wildflowers are described with colour photos for easy identification. This handy pocket-size publication folds out into a 30 x 55 cm double-sided page. It can be used for 2014 and beyond, in future wildflower seasons. The self-guide aims to give people the information they need to confidently take the walks themselves in small groups. The wildflower identification tool aims to enhance the experience and educate the public on the fantastic diversity of wildflowers we have in this region. Pick up a copy of the guide from the Beerwah Library or from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

Get up&Grow with Jade King Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening
Spring into the garden!
Already we’ve been enjoying some delightfully warm days beckoning you outside to enjoy the veggie patch, as well as provide that energy boost, needed after the Winter chill. The change in season heralds the beginning of loads of new plantings. Every year I get excited about changing over to Spring and Summer crops. It’s the combination of new plants and challenges, anticipation for the welcome change of seasonal produce on the dinner plate, and knowing that most of the produce from these plantings will be part of our Christmas celebrations. On this note, I am rampantly planting in all the summer vegetables with the intention of having a heap of fresh salad vegetables to harvest for all the outdoor barbecues I plan to enjoy in the back yard this summer. Red, yellow and pink cherry tomatoes, crispy cucumber, fresh grated beetroot, carrot sticks, juicy corn and capsicum on a bed of mixed lettuce leaves, all straight from the backyard! However, as usual, we are not the only ones keenly getting out and about in this beautiful weather … once again I’ve been astonished to note that on the very first day of warmer temperatures, I witness the very beautiful fluttering of white wings belonging to the most unwelcome, yet most frequent visitor to my garden – the White Cabbage Butterfly! Never fear though, I add a weekly to fortnightly Dipel application and butterfly catching to my combat regime.

With the warmer weather fast approaching, this time of year sees a resurgence of ticks and fleas. Of particular concern for our pets is the paralysis tick which is particularly prevalent from now until Christmas. If an animal is bitten, early symptoms to look out for include vomiting and a change in bark / meow. These symptoms then progress to a paralysis of the back end which if left untreated can develop into complete paralysis and unfortunately can eventuate in death. Symptoms usually present between two to five days. Early treatment is always the best option. If you suspect that your animal has been bitten, bring them in as soon as possible to be treated with tick anti serum, which can be supported by a holistic care program. Prevention is always recommended. Ticks can be very aggressive and they are prevalent (but not restricted to) scrubby areas. Wherever possible try to keep your property maintained and the grass short during this risk period. The paralysis tick is blue / bottle green in colour and the majority of ticks will attach themselves to the area in front of the animal’s front legs. Often starting small, the tick will progressively increase in size as it feeds on the animal’s blood. Preventative measures available at Glass House Holistic Veterinary Service include a variety of products such as collars and spot on topical treatments. We recommend daily searching of your pet's skin and coat also. Again these treatments can be assisted with a holistic care program that can be tailored to your pets’ individual needs.

Is your backyard safe?
We all want to make sure we keep our beloved pets healthy, safe and out of harm’s way, but sometimes there are dangers lurking in our backyards that we’re unaware of. Ticks are becoming active and Dorry from Glass House Holistic Vet has all the information you need to know in her column on this page. Snakes are on the move – so watch out if you have piles of firewood and timber, rocks and sheet metal lying around. And although not all snakes are poisonous, others such as pythons can become a danger to birds, and smaller pets. Cane toads have been dormant over winter, but are now starting to hop about at night. New pets need to be taught not to play with these poisonous pests. There are a lot of common garden plants that we all know to be poisonous to pets and people. Carpet snake Oleander, Foxglove, Angels Trumpet, Rhubarb leaves and White Cedar berries just to name a few. But did you know that Agapanthus can cause nausea, vomiting and mouth ulcers? The berries of Duranta (Sheena’s Gold or Geisha Girl) can be fatal if swallowed and have killed pets. Brunfelsia (Yesterday Today Tomorrow) has been known to kill dogs that have eaten the leaves. Cycad fruit is deadly and will kill even large stock animals if eaten. And the list goes on … Protecting your pets from dangers is mostly about using your common sense, but if you need help identifying poisonous plants, there is a great book called ‘Poisonous 2 Pets’ (see www.publish.csiro.au/pid/6706.htm).
