A timely reminder to be bushfire prepared History has shown that the cost of bushfires can have a devastating impact on all aspects of a farm business including losses to homes, fencing, livestock, crops, machinery and the environment. A detailed bushfire action plan is important as it will provide you with the tools to make informed decisions in a crisis situation and reduce the risk of serious injury, property damage and help protect your farm business. It is a good idea to encourage all members of your family to participate in the development and implementation of the plan as it will help maintain awareness of the ongoing fire prevention activities that need to occur throughout the year, not just in the peak summer months.
Prepare now for bushfire season
Prepare your property before summer starts to help reduce your bushfire risk by doing the following: • Move woodpile and stacked timber • Create firebreaks. • Prepare an emergency fire kit, away from the house. including a plan. • Keep the grass short - on farms, keep grazing pasture pressure high • Decide whether to stay and defend your property in the on areas near the house. event of a fire or go early. • Prune the dead material from the shrubs in the building protection zone. • Ensure you have a ‘survival kit’ pre-prepared. • Clean out gutters, remove debris from roof. As well as preparing your property for fire season, it’s important to check that your insurance cover is adequate. Your local WFI Area Manager can help you to review your insurance to make sure you can get back on your feet in the event of a fire.
To review your insurance cover, contact your local WFI Area Manager, Rachel Wright on 0437 804 951 or visit wfi.com.au/RachelWright. To see if our products are right for you, always consider the PDS from the product issuer, WFI (ABN 24 000 036 279 AFSL 241461). Rachel Wright (AR 362588) is an Authorised Representative of WFI.
&Backyard Enjoy the backyard of your dreams
Summer is just around the corner and what better way to make the most of our glorious surrounding natural outlook and wonderful weather here on the Sunshine Coast - than to enjoy the lifestyle benefits that a beautifully turfed backyard can bring to you and your family. Located at Glass House Mountains, Wild Horse Turf is owned by local operators Dean and Amanda Smyth. For the last 11 years, the family run business has been providing high quality domestic, recreational and commercial turf throughout the Coast region. The business specialise in offering personalised service with Dean and Amanda proudly standing behind the product they sell. Their confidence that customers are getting the best quality turf available is assured - as they nurture and grow the product themselves. reasons why you’re guaranteed to get the best looking lawn in the street from Wild Horse Turf
1 2 3 4 5 6
You’ll get personal service. When you phone Wild Horse Turf, you’ll speak to the person who will cut your grass for you. We’ll listen to your needs and help you achieve the lawn of your dreams. You’ll get great back-up service and receive our quarterly Turf Tips newsletter, with advice for maintaining your lawn, long after you’ve laid it.
You’ll get the best quality grass. We’re sure that you’re getting the topmost quality grass, wild horse turf because we grow it ourselves. We use biological fertilising agents for healthier grass that will establish your new backyard faster.
You’ll get the freshest grass. We’ll cut your turf to order, so you get the freshest turf available. From the moment it’s harvested, turf starts to deteriorate and die. Limiting the time from the paddock to your yard is a great way to give your lawn the best start. When you buy from landscape yards and hardware stores, you risk buying sick turf that’s been sweating on the pallet for days.
You’ll get what you’re paying for. Our Sapphire soft-leaf buffalo and Empire Zoysia are grown in paddocks that have been certified by Ozbreed, the breeders of Sapphire and Empire. So when you buy turf from us you can be confident that you’re getting what you pay for.
You’ll get a flatter, better-looking lawn. Because our cutting process still uses people, we offer a hands-on approach to quality control. Because we keep a close eye on each and every slab, you’ll get a more consistent turf and a flatter, better-looking end result.
No trailer? No worries. Wild Horse Turf values our local customers so we offer a free courtesy trailer for locals to transport their new lawns home. Or ask about our affordable delivery and laying rates.
Orders over 100m will receive a 10kg bucket of our specialty turf fertiliser
which contains the nutrients that are essential for early root establishment and healthy plant growth

&Backyard Spectacular open garden at Buderim
What could be better on the weekend of September 10, 11 and 12 than a leisurely stroll around one of the loveliest local gardens you’ll find on the Sunshine Coast? ‘Orchid Grove’, at 17 Barkston Court in Buderim, is the award winning labour of love owned by Chris and Angel O’Dempsey. They have developed a beautiful urban oasis of tranquillity, where every space is filled with delightful colour, unique creations, and amazing beauty. Orchids abound on trees, rocks, hanging, and nestled amid antique garden items. Ponds, a waterfall and creek blend well with a wonderful assortment of plants, as well as a fabulous walk-through bird aviary with native and
exotic finches and quail. The early spring has made many plants bud early, but this looks like causing quite a mass flowering just at the right time for the open garden. A real talking point is the display of historic machinery, as well as a photographic exhibition charting the history of the gardens. The lush, tropical paradise feel is highlighted by ferns, orchids, bromeliads and other foliage plants, creating interest at every turn. There will be a plant sale on the day, so you can take away something which catches your eye in the gardens. Light refreshments will be available from ‘Angels Café’. The cost of entry is only $7.00 (under-15 free), with all proceeds going to their charity of choice – Heart Reach Australia. The funds will be used to follow up the Medical Ambulance Boat project (Chris and Angel built and delivered the very first
Ambulance Boat to Vietnam's Mekong Delta last December, servicing many poor families in remote regions) as well as helping hundreds of very poor kids in Central Vietnam. ‘Orchid Grove’ will be open the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11 and on Monday, September 12, from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day, with a special group deal available on the Monday (call 5476 9444 for bookings).

STREET PRIDE I recently sold in Mooloolah Valley and phoned Aaron from Street Pride Pressure Cleaning to clean the external areas of my home in time for real estate photos. The roof, driveway and external walls all looked amazing - the place sold in the first week and I have since had Aaron back to clean up my new house in Glass House Mountains. New look ... same great service
Daniel Joyce and his wife Sally are proud to introduce their new business look and name … Joyce Mowing and Gardening. Dan has been mowing lawns and providing genuine care and attention to detail to local lawns and gardens over the last few years. “Our new name means we can continue to offer you great service and now much more,” he said. Joyce ‘M&G’ are a family owned business and they take pride in looking after many local clients’ gardens. “We are proud of the positive feedback we get from all of our customers,” Dan said. He said that while it was primarily a mowing business, they certainly don’t just do mowing. “We offer many other gardening services including hedge trimming, garden clean-ups, weed removal, mulching, landscaping and gutter cleaning. “Our best tip for summer lawn growth is book-in early. Once the rain falls and weather heats up the grass grows quickly. “We are generally booked up a week in advance over summer and would hate to say no to last minute call ups.”

&Backyard Go wild in your garden this Spring
By Spencer Shaw, Forest Heart Nursery, Maleny If like me you’re a fan of sharing your garden with native fauna, then here’s a few tips on providing habitat for our native animals. In particular we’ll discuss birds, but these tips will increase habitat for a wide range of fauna. The bulk of plants used in mainstream native gardens are cultivar Grevilleas, Banksias and Bottle Brushes. These are all amazing flowering plants that add colour, variety and are great nectar sources, but if they are the dominant plants in your native garden and they are surrounded by large open areas of lawn then aggressive birds such as Rainbow Lorikeets and the Common (or Noisy) Miner will often dominate to the exclusion of more timid birds. My tip here is to add different levels to your planting such as groundcovers and grasses; a diversity of shrubs and trees; and bushier planting that give smaller or timid birds somewhere to hide. Edible seed bearing grasses such as Kangaroo Grass, Poa, Lomandra, Bamboo Grass and Graceful Grass can increase habitat for smaller birds, with the added bonus that these grasses provide valuable nesting material. It’s the picture of parental persistence watching tiny Red Brow Finches trying to keep their balance as they take flight with a length of grass 10 times their height to build their nests with. Don’t forget fruiting plants such as Flax Lilly, Midyim, Breynia, Muttonwood, Bleeding Heart, Blueberry Ash, and Native Elderberry provide sustenance for a great variety of birds including Lewins Honey Eaters, Emerald Doves, Bower Birds, King Parrots and Currawongs.
Traditional responses to insect attacks (why is it that we see insects as attacking plants and yet cows merely graze?) in your garden is to spray an array of chemicals (including some quite nasty ones!). However, the vast majority of our native birds either will eat insects if the opportunity arises or live wholly on insects. These insects, although appearing a nuisance to us, are crucial food for many of our feathered fauna. I remember many years ago a Tahitian Lime tree in our gardens being invaded by sap sucking citrus bugs, who concentrate the citrus oils which they then use to defend themselves by squirting it onto you! However, a few days after they arrived, Spangled Drongos (fantastic name) also arrived and ate these highly aromatic bugs with a certain relish. Finally, a question I’m often asked at the moment is “who’s digging all those holes in my lawn?” Bandicoots could well be the culprit, but on the plus side they are eating lawn grubs and aerating your soil … learning to share your garden with our native fauna has many rewards, so join us in Going Wild this Spring.
WE CLEAN WATER TANKS Healthy Water… Healthy Life! Pristine Water Systems offers a wide range of water purification products and replacement filters / cartridges for homes, boats, caravans and restaurants etc. Our body relies on clean, pure water for general good health and well-being. It’s as important as the quality of air that we breathe. The fact is however that the water we drink from our kitchen taps is not always 100% water at all – it can also contain a weak solution of the chemicals that are added to make it “safe” to drink. Chlorine and chloramine additions are necessary to control bacteria levels in drinking water. These chemicals should be likened to the lunch wrap that is used to protect our sandwiches. Whilst it is beneficial in keeping the sandwiches clean, it should definitely be removed before the sandwiches are eaten. The good news is that there is a solution. Good quality drinking water filters / purifiers effectively “unwrap” the water that we consume – for both drinking, food preparation and cooking. So whether you rely on town or tank water, Simon or Allen can assist you to make the best informed decision on what’s available to make your water the purest for you and your family. In the Garden with Brownie
Bigger is better
National Tree Day at Beerburrum
Looks like ‘big’ things catch people’s attention. Steve Quinlan from Mt Mellum emailed this photo of his lemon to me, showing that it is as big as a pineapple. With the Beerwah Charity Sports Day running the biggest and the weirdest shaped strawberry competitions … maybe it’s time for a regular spot on the gardening page showcasing the ‘Glasshouse Country & Maleny Biggest and Weirdest Fruit and Veg’. I’ve always thought there should be a ‘rudest vegetable’ category at the Maleny Show – some of my carrots would have done very well. But I feel that I’d be voted down at the Editorial Planning Meeting if I suggested that as a regular column. Emails of support can be sent to Lea Parkes at editorial@gcnews.com.au (but I fear the idea is doomed to be vetoed each time the same way as my ‘Glasshouse Page Three Girl’ concept). So if you have any weird and wonderful fruit and veg growing at your place, please send me a photo and a few lines to gbrown@gcnews.com.au
Contributed by Katrina De Clara Beerburrum State School recently celebrated National Tree Day. Students from Prep through to Year 6 had a fantastic day participating in a variety of different activities. The Preps were very creative and were able to take home a wooden bead necklace, but also went on a mini school tour when they were introduced to mapping.
Beerburrum State School’s veggie garden Our Year 1’s potted up small succulents and looked at different sorts of leaves and seeds found in the school gardens. As part of the Year 2’s geography studies, they learnt about different landscapes and then worked in small teams to create their own ‘mini town’ with natural, managed and built features. There were some wonderful discoveries made by the Year 3’s during the tree identification and mapping adventure. One tree, with the common name ‘White Apple’ is thought to have been planted in the early days of the school, so could be close to 100 years old; we are currently researching the history of this tree.
Celebrate Spring and Wattle Day at the GMAN Native Plant Sale Now is the perfect time to start planting to take advantage of the warm weather. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network will hold one of their regular local plant sales on September 3 in Uniting Park Glass House Mountains. Sale time is 8.00am to 11.00am. All tube stock still only $1.00 with a few half price specials at 50 cents! All purchases over $10.00 go in a draw to win a copy of the local plants book of the Glass House Mountains produced by National Parks and Wildlife. To keep our costs down, please return any of our used tubes and bring cartons or bags for purchases. Enquiries: Gwen 5493 0029.
