Supporting local apprentices
By Sonia Clark Beerwah Small Engines has a long tradition of employing local apprentices that goes back as far as when the business started - nearly 40 years ago! Since 1977, numerous local lads have spent time learning the ropes and getting a qualification through the business. Their very first apprentice, Barry, ended up staying with the company for 25 years, and over the years many have stayed on to work with the family run business for a number of years. Even today, people who did their apprenticeship at Beerwah Small Engines many years ago keep coming back to buy parts or service equipment for their own businesses. Currently six working staff members have either completed or are completing their apprenticeship through the business. Their youngest team member Harry; who has been there 12 months, was just 15 when he originally started - while Jarred who is now 21, was 18 when he started. Both young men are working towards achieving their Certificate 111 in Outdoor Power Equipment and the entire apprenticeship takes four years. “It’s lovely having local boys from local families working with us. They are all like family to us, and are great workers who also have lots of fun. It’s great that we can support local employment,” said Donna from Beerwah Small Engines. Working full time, apprentices learn about all aspects of small outdoor equipment such as brush cutters, blowers and chainsaws as well as gaining in-depth understanding of domestic push mowers and ride on mowers. Under supervision they also learn about the business, customer service, computer and mechanical skills throughout their training period and attend sessions at TAFE throughout the year. Harry, Jarred, Alan, Shaun, Alex and Jonathan have all completed or are completing their apprenticeship at Beerwah Small Engines.

Autumn means fine warm days – just great for getting the kids outside and active in the backyard. To encourage your children to spend more time outside, you need to make sure your backyard landscape is kid-friendly. A lush green lawn is an inviting space. With the weather cooling down, it can be difficult to keep an average lawn looking green. There are some terrific new lawn varieties which don’t need a lot of water and can easily handle wear and tear. Backyard play areas need to be safe and secure. Screening with fences as well as plants and trees will enclose a garden and keep kids in. But remember to allow for gates that are lockable or have latches above the reach height of young children. If you have a pool, make sure the pool fence meets the standards and, if you have a water feature, be wary that children can drown in even the shallowest amount of water. Try to avoid any major changes in levels that require more than two steps. Kids easily fall down steps. Make them short in height and long in tread so children can manage them easily. Shade is important for children and good shade trees are a great asset in any garden. Large trees need a regular health check to make sure that they are safe to climb and that their branches are sound. Speak to a tree specialist about the safety of your backyard trees. A shade sail is a good alternative. In high-use play areas – like a play gym – a soft-fall zone made from 15mm pine bark mulch is a great idea. It is clean, soft and is easily topped up every now and again. Sandpits are popular with kids and easy to install. Make sure you use washed sand, which will not stain clothes. Cover the sandpit, just so that pet cats don’t leave any nasty surprises. Another important safety factor is to have good visibility from the house to the main play areas, so that adults can keep a watchful eye on the children. If you create a separate area for children, place a garden seat nearby so an adult can sit, watch and relax. Creating a raised garden bed with fresh edible plants is a great way to keep the kids outside and out of the fridge. Growing things like celery, parsley, carrots, beans and cherry tomatoes will not only keep them happy, but teach them good eating habits as well. One thing to remember when designing a kid-friendly backyard is scale. Everything in the adult world is too big and daunting for children, so think about reducing size for a child's play area. Stepping stones should be smaller with less distance for each step; paths should be narrow; and dwarf plants can be used to create a ‘land of the giants’ look. Using strange garden ornaments, like dinosaurs, fairies and zoo animals creates colour and excitement, stimulating the imagination and encouraging creative play. By creating a safe, but interesting, area for your children to play in, you can pass traditional Australian backyard experiences and memories onto them.
