Reclaim your weekend!

As winter winds up, grass cutting season will soon begin, and this is the time of year that many people consider upgrading their mowers. It is always worth considering the size of your garden or land when considering a new mower purchase. For larger lawns the John Deere range of ride on mowers consistently offers exceptional results. As well as stocking a massive range of all the top selling brands, Sunshine Coast Mowers are the Coast’s John Deere specialists offering a huge range of one of the world’s most trusted brands. Built on reliability, performance and comfort, it is easy to see why John Deere are market leaders. James Hollands from Sunshine Coast Mowers is highly impressed with the advantages that the ‘Zero Turn’ range of ride on mowers offers his customers and in particular he recommends the new John Deere Z335E model. “These machines are incredible!” he said. “They really cut mowing time down significantly and you can get great results quickly. It means more time to enjoy your weekend or time off!” The Z335E offers unmatched quality, performance, and comfort along with exceptional maneuverability and trimming capability. With a 20HP full-pressure engine and a newly engineered 42 inch Accel Deep mower deck, these machines power along with an 11 kilometer per hour mowing speed. The new Accel Deep mower deck has a single-piece stamped steel shell specially shaped to maximise airflow. At faster speeds, this deck produces optimal cut quality and the unique 12 centimetre deep shell which extends all the way around has been designed to maximise airflow to lift grass up for the most level cut possible. To find out how you can reclaim your weekend, or if you’d like more information about sales, servicing, parts and accessories, contact the Caloundra store, located at 31 Caloundra Road or call 5444 2577. In theGarden Jobs for the yard in August What’s on for gardeners in August • •

It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. If you have a veggie garden, don’t forget to water it once or twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the drier winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime or dolomite. • Spray the flowers of your mango tree with a copper-based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply. • Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure. • Watch for aphids attacking new growth on rose bushes. Squash them, hose them off or spray them. • Keep your strawberries fruiting with a fortnightly feed of fish and seaweed solutions. • Apply a light application of a lawn fertiliser to give your lawns a small boost into spring. Vegetables Plant carrot, lettuce, radish, beetroot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, beans, pumpkin, silverbeet, spring onion, choko, squash, sweet potato, tomato, zucchini, broccoli, asian vegetables, cabbage, peas, spinach, coriander, rocket and turnips. Flowers Plant marigold, petunia, calendula, bedding begonia, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, gaillardia, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, phlox, portulaca, snapdragon, zinnia, amaranthus, salvia and statice.

Plant of the month

M.R.W.L. We care about our environment

Cabbage Palm Livistona australis This magnificent tree is the most common native palm species of the east coast of Australia, and interestingly it is the one after which the Palm Island group was named by Captain Cook in 1770. Reaching around 25m, the Cabbage Palm is relatively slow-growing and can provide a striking architectural feature to gardens. This palm is hugely adaptable and will grow in most local soil, aspect and locality conditions and flowers/fruits all year. Cabbage Palms have several uses. The young unfolded leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. The young and tender leaves are eaten like cabbages. The leaves are used for thatching and making hats. They are large and fibrous and can also be used for making baskets, bags, nets, etc. Seeking protection from the sun, early European settlers in Australia used fibre from the native palm to create the cabbage tree hat, a distinctive form of headwear during the colonial era. Being highly adaptable in its growing needs and providing habitat and food for native animals, the Cabbage Palm is a beautiful native tree in any setting.

How to ensure your rainwater tank provides pristine water Clean, healthy water is our most precious resource. When we are reliant on catching our own rainwater, every drop counts. But do we need to compromise water quality and the health of our families to conserve water? Absolutely not, according to the team at Pristine Water Systems. Rainwater quality is affected as soon as it hits our roof. Water passes through guttering, pipes, tanks, filters and taps before we drink, prepare food and wash in it. There are potential contaminants at every stage. It is therefore vital to plan and maintain the system as a whole. This includes maintaining the cleanliness of your catchment, i.e. roof, gutters and pipework, as well as maintaining the cleanliness of your tank. A water filtration system should be installed and the filters replaced regularly to prevent bacteria build up. Filtration is part of the bacteria-control process, and a full range of options is available for consideration. Pristine Water Systems has developed a unique process called QuadClean that leaves your tank water totally cleansed, sanitized, aerated and invigorated, wasting very little water in doing so. This process involves testing the water; vacuuming off sediment and sludge; filtering the water and using an oxygenating process to kill harmful bacteria. Hazardous matter found in tanks can include organic sludge, silt and ash, animal droppings and even decaying carcasses. Parasites (Giardia), Bacteria (E.Coli, Cryptosporidium) and insect larvae (mosquitoes, sandflies) can be present, potentially causing illness to family members and visitors.

Simon Lacey (left) and Allen Pitcher (right) Two friendly local operators manage the Hinterland and surrounding areas. Simon Lacey services the Glass House Mountains area and covers the region from Caloundra to Kilcoy. Allen Pitcher services Glenview and Landsborough up to Maleny and the Hinterland. It makes sense to clean your tanks now whilst they have plenty of water in them rather than wait until levels are low. Incoming water from the first storms of the season will stir up the settled sludge on the bottom of your tank contaminating your fresh rainwater. Some home owners have had complaints after a water delivery that the

water delivered was contaminated. This is not generally the case at all. Water suppliers are not going to risk their livelihood by delivering substandard water. The contamination occurs when the inflow of water disturbs the settled sludge on the bottom of the tank. Cleaning and sanitizing your tank now will prevent these problems occurring later in the year. For more information about ensuring your access to pristine water, call Simon on 0411 774 767 or Allen on 0404 302 723. See www.pristinewater.com.au for more information. Business feature
