PLANT TRANSPORT • Living things require materials (substances, compounds, molecules) transported from one place to another inside and outside its structure. • However, transport presents certain difficulties. The size of the organism is the first one. • Can you imagine other ones?

DIFFUSION • Only very small organisms can carry things around their body by diffusion. • The very first type of plants, called non‐vascular plants, use diffusion from cell to cell to transport water and nutrients.

PLANT TRANSPORT SYSTEM • Plants have a transport system formed by thin tubes inside them. • This transportation system carries liquids up and down stem and all around the plant. • Some tubes are called Xylem, they carry water and mineral salts. The roots take in water and dissolved salts, they pass up the stem in the xylem to the leaves. • Some tubes are called Phloem, they carry dissolved food like sugars and amino acids which are made in the leaves by photosynthesis. The phloem carries the food to all parts of the plant. • The phloem also carries hormones around the plant. These hormones control cell division for growth of the stems, roots and leaves, as well as the growth of flowers and fruits.

ROOTS • Plant roots have two major functions: 1. The roots anchor the plant in the soil. 2. The roots take up water and mineral salts. • Root Hairs: located just behind the root tip, as microscopic hairs. Water passes into the root hairs by Osmosis, until it reaches the xylem that transports it to the leaves.

Transpiration • Water is pulled up the Xylem in the stem from the roots to the leaves. • This water is used for photosynthesis and to maintain the plant turgid and from wilting. • In the leaves,water evaporates into the air by the process of transpiration. • The water that is used or lost by transpiration, more water is pulled up through the Xylem. Example, like sucking water up a straw. • This causes a continuous flow of water up the Xylem called transpiration stream. • More transpiration takes place during the day than at night, because the stomata are open during the day and close at night. • The stomata can also close in very dry conditions, because the water lost is not being replaced with water from the soil.

Transporting Food • The process of photosynthesis happens in the leaves, producing: sugar, amino acids and fatty acids. • The process through which food is carried to all parts of the plant through the Phloem is called Translocation. • Xylem are dead tubes, but Phloem is living tissue, which means that moving substances through it involves active transport.
