PROTEINS • Proteins are the workhorse molecules of all living things. • Proteins are large biomolecules composed of building blocks called Amino Acids. • Proteins are chains of amino acids that twist and fold into certain shapes that determine what the proteins do.

Protein Structure • • • •

As we learned before, proteins are long chains of amino acids. However, proteins can have very complex structures. Usually proteins have levels of organization. These levels are represented as:

PRIMARY STRUCTURE PRIMARY STRUCTURE: amino acids are lined up one after the other, determining a long sequence.

SECONDARY STRUCTURE SECONDARY STRUCTURE: the sequence of aminoacids acquires a shape based on the chemical structure of each amino acid. TERTIARY STRUCTURE TERTIARY STRUCTURE: the folded secondary structure interacts with the amino acids nearby, acquiring a new 3D structure. CUATERNARY STRUCTURE CUATERNARY STRUCTURE: the subunits that form a complex protein interact with each other, acquiring a final 3D structure according to its function. 11

What are Proteins useful for?

Proteins' Roles • Proteins accomplish very important and vital functions for cells and organisms in general. • However, there are 3 main areas where proteins have remarkable functions:

1. Structural Proteins: 1. these proteins form supportive or rigid structures in cells or other parts of living organisms.

2. 2. Metabolic Proteins: these proteins have a central role in the chemical reactions of cells and living organisms.

3. Regulatory Proteins: these proteins intervene 3. regulating cellular processes interacting with all the other biomolecules.

Investigation Group Work: Proteins in your Life and in Society 1. Form 6 groups of 5 students each. 2. Two students from groups 1, 2, and 3 will go to the library for 15 minutes to search information about Use of Proteins in Society in books and the Internet. 3. The students from groups 4, 5, and 6 will go to the library after the 15 minutes. 4. The students that remain in the lab must prepare a Web Diagram about Proteins in your body and food. 5. Prepare a Web Diagram with the information obtained in your book and internet search. 6. Merge the two pieces of information and prepare an oral presentation for next week. 20
