Living Organisms • Living Organisms are formed by one cell (unicellular), or many cells (multicellular). • They can be very tiny (microscopic), or very big (macroscopic). • They can make their own food (autotrophs), or they can get it from other living organisms (heterotrophs). • Sometimes they have disappeared by cataclismic events (massive extinctions). • They can have significant anatomical and behavioral changes (evolution) over long periods of time. • And there are hundreds of millions of different species of living organisms.

MONERA

• The Kingdom MONERA, is sometimes referred to as two different kingdoms: Archaebacteria and Eubacteria.

MONERA

ARCHAEBACTERIA Oldest living organisms, prokaryotes and unicellular, found living in very harsh conditions (bottom of the sea, volcanic vents). Formed by 3 phyla: Methanogens, Halophiles, Thermoacidophiles.

EUBACTERIA Are more complex and common than archaebacteria. They live in more neutral conditions. Classified into 4 groups: Cyanobacteria, Spirochetes, Gram‐ positive, and Proteobacteria. They are also classified by shape: Cocci, Bacilli, Spirilla. 12

Bacterial Facts • There are more bacteria on Earth than all the other living things combined. Most bacteria are too small to be seen without a microscope. • The largest known bacteria are 1,000 times larger than the average bacterium. • All bacteria are unicellular prokaryotic organisms, which they lack a nucleus, nuclear membrane, and membrane bound organelles. • Prokaryotes function as independent organisms . • Prokaryotes reproduce differently than eukaryotes do. • Cyanobacteria are the first organisms to produce their own food by photosynthesis (autotrophs).

PROTISTS • These members of the Kingdom Protista are very diverse and have very few traits in common. • Most protists are single‐celled (unicellular) organisms, but some are made of many cells (multicellular), and others live in colonies. • Some protists make their own food, and some eat other organisms or decaying matter. • Some protists can control their own movement, and others cannot. Characteristics of Protists • Protists do share a few characteristics. • For example: All protists are eukaryotes, or organisms with nucleus and organelles. • Protists are related more by how they differ from members of other kingdoms than by how they are similar to other protists. • Protists are less complex than other eukaryotic organisms; for example, protists don’t have specialized tissues. • But, fungi, plants, and animals evolved from early protists.
