GLAZE

Glaze Zine is the creative community for the Austin-based makeup brand, Musée Beauty. Glaze explores art, culture, and aesthetics through our belief that makeup is an art form. All the makeup looks in this zine were created using the Impressionism Palette in some way.

Every issue of Glaze, our numbers swell and the talent on our team multiplies. This volume was no exception, despite the difficult circumstances we faced. In a pandemic world, collaboration and community have become more important than ever as we learn just how much we need each other. The tenacity of creative spirit refuses to be extinguished, and over and over throughout every team I saw the desire to connect— to create something wonderful together. Having created this publication only a year and a half ago, I never could have anticipated the life it took on of its own. Every volume I sit back and marvel at how many talented people believe in what we stand for. As other original members of Glaze can attest to, we never imagined that what we created in the basement of a dorm would grow into something so powerful. So with all of that being said, let’s explore Volume III of Glaze Zine: En Plein Air.

x was a strange sight to behold.

They were quite beautiful; awesome in the literal sense. A majestic being of massive stature with golden antlers atop their head anointing them. The world Ox inhabited was full of natural wonders but desolate in its beauty. They would walk along the path from their home to their garden that overlooked starbrushed cliffs and oceans of white light. When they reached a ridge at the edge of their homestead they would remark how odd it was that at this outer border of their world there was nought but void ahead, that they dared not to step into. Amid this mystery, it was the trees that were most beautiful to Ox. They could lie under them for hours and breathe in the sweet, warm air that the trees exuded. Their leaves looked as though they were hand painted with gold, with only the most miniscule edges of their tips transforming to a cold silver. The trees were very warm and provided great comfort to Ox in their loneliness. They were friends, Ox often thought. Indeed Ox had never known anyone in their life, not in the way we would think today. They were born of the aether with all the knowledge they would ever have and wanted for little, except company. Because Ox was the only ego in this strange world the words they required to describe the loneliness they felt could not be found. Ox could never articulate anything more than that they longed for more of themself and to see themself in the trees they called their friends.

And so in this limbo Ox inhabited, this island floating in the plain air of Everything, they longed for something with no name. As they looked up to their sky, they always saw golden warmth blocked only by humongous clouds whose imperfections and curvature framed the light masterfully as though it were the work of a master set designer. Ox had a name for this, the sky. They also had a name for the gold and the way the trees could make them feel. But they had no name for what lay just beyond the ridge. And so, as the days grew longer and the trees exhausted, Ox crept closer to the void which was indescribable in its overwhelming Nothing. At last, they were resolved that what they sought was in this sole thing for which they lacked a name. Having the knowledge of their Everything, only the Nothing could satisfy their drive for Something that they did not yet know.

They thrust their hand into it and cried out in pain. As they turned away from the darkness, the Nothing that harmed them, their hand was gone. As they looked on their homestead, their Everything, the leaves of the trees were fluttering away in a gust of wind and dissolving into the oceans of white light. The world was crumbling and for the first time in their life that was millenia long they felt helpless. As the ground on which they stood disintegrated and left only space for their two feet, they resigned and fell backwards into the unknown. As they fell, their body fell away first and then the ego which inhabited it. The material that composed their body became the stars that dot our night sky and their ego which knew Everything became our Everything. And this was a strange sight to behold.

Rabbit ben burke

A little rabbit hops along slowly on a beautiful day. Warm with a breeze sun and clouds. Then the bunny sees a man and freezes. But wait, that’s not a man. Looks like one, but only forest green where there should be a smile or a frown.

“Oh well,” the bunny rabbit thinks. “I’ll let them be. There’s more than enough grass for the both of us.” 38

The Solace of Nature along with the promising blooms of spring came a dark shadow, a tumultuous season no one was expecting and it threatened us. it took away our normal day to day, our sense of hope, no human interaction they say or else the evil will get you, too. forced into isolation, on oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own, a nice break from a busy schedule but it was easy to feel alone so I looked to nature. in open air I found what I had lost like flowers bursting from the ground I came alive. in the ocean breeze I knew life would be okay with all we have gone through the rise and fall of the waves remain constant. in the sun I saw brilliant colors, orange, yellow, red that against it all paint the sky from dawn till dusk. in the trees I believe movement means strength not in what one can achieve but the little effort it takes to grow. Nature comforts us in Her embrace when four corners and a small screen threaten to cut off our air supply she welcomes everyone regardless of gender, age, or race and we run into Her arms. when the looming presence of the unknown seems too much to bear look to the calming wind or a rainbow after a storm. She is always there keeping us grounded. the consistency of Her love ever-flowing, a reminder of the importance of our existence. so look up, look outside of yourself and become aware
