Members: 10 Monthly Contribution: R1 100
In 2016, a group of 10 ladies based in Natalspruit, Katlehong came together to start a stokvel to improve each other’s lives. They each contribute R1 100 every month. They’ve never had issues with backlashes because they all have the same goal and mission. The Rising Divas meet in the first week of each month, in one of the members’ homes, to hand over R11 000 to the next member in line to receive a lump sum. They believe that this money helps them improve their homes and pay other debts as it operates like a 10-month savings account to them. They don’t make use of bank accounts as they give each other cash in hand. In the near future, they hope to reach their goal of paying off existing property loans and buying members new homes. “As a Rising Diva, I personally find the stokvel useful as I use the money to look after my siblings because I am the eldest and I am self-employed. When it is my turn to receive the lump sum, I already have plans like paying my siblings' school fees in full,” said Rising Diva member Selepe Thembalethu who tragically lost both her parents and her sibling in a car accident in 2014 while they were on their way to visit her. Formed: 2016 Goal: Buying property and paying off existing home loans
Location: Natalspruit, Katlehong
In 2014, Sis Ouma and her friends got together to start the Ratanang Stokvel Club with the aim of providing members with opportunities to save and invest, to improve their lives and most of all, to promote woman empowerment. These stokvel members contribute R1 100 each month at their monthly meetings with R100 of this amount contributed to food and drinks. Sharing common savings goals, the group's commitment helps to keep them on track and because of this, they are a strong group and understand that they are on this journey together. Their stokvel has assisted them in providing groceries to their families and supporting members and their families in the event of death.
