THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
M
y last Flag article was about the start of the golf season, the opening of the Club and the many new challenges we faced with the onset of COVID-19. Yet here we are getting ready for fall and hoping good golfing weather will extend until early October. Time, and Calgary’s golf season, pass quickly.
Dan McDonald dmcdonald@glencoe.org
One of the Club’s projects over the past winter was the construction of the Turfcare Auxiliary Building. When the Board considered the location and structure, which required that it be outside the flood plain and big enough to house materials and equipment, we were concerned that its appearance might detract from the beauty of the Practice Facility. To the contrary, I hope you will agree that the building and landscaping fit nicely into the environment. The building was formally opened on July 24 and has been a necessary and welcome addition for our turfcare crew. After much deliberation, on August 12 the Board approved the renovation of the kitchen, with a budget of $2.4 million. When we presented the Clubhouse renovation plans to the members last winter, one message we heard clearly and repeatedly was that the kitchen should be a priority. It is 35 years old and shows it. In the spring, the Board deferred further discussion of the Clubhouse renovation as a whole in view of the current economic climate and pandemic, but concluded that the kitchen needed to be renovated, that the cost was reasonable and that the project was affordable. Construction will begin immediately after the courses close in early October. The new

kitchen will be operational for the start of next season. We have hired excellent professionals we have worked with on other projects, and have put in place an oversight structure to ensure the successful completion of the project. While most members will likely never see the inside of the kitchen, it is an important part of the Club’s infrastructure needed to provide excellent food and beverage services to our members and guests. Many of our members sit on or chair the Club’s committees. Those members volunteer their time and energy behind the scenes to make every golf season a success. I would like to thank our committee chairs and members for their excellent work again. It was not business as usual this year, with many changes and challenges resulting from COVID-19. But through their efforts we were able, once again, to enjoy the programs, tournaments and the like that would not happen without their dedication. As the days get shorter and the demand for golf remains strong, we see more pressure on the tee sheets. That is the inevitable result of so many of our members playing more golf this year than ever — with the number of rounds up 39%, May through August 25 rounds were at 48,532 — and is a sign of a healthy Club. Enjoy the rest of the season.

THE GLENCOE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
C
Ash Chadha achadha@glencoe.org 403-240-7385
ongratulations to Darrell Joy and Grace Bell for winning the 2020 Glencoe Golf & Country Club Championship. With great weather, good food and phenomenal course conditions, it was a great championship weekend at the Club. I would like to recognize Brock Coates, Chef Jordan and Jennifer Cox along with Judy Forshner for all their efforts in planning and executing a very successful Club Championship weekend! In August, we also hosted other Club Championship events. Please join me in congratulating Carter Code and Grace Bell for winning the 2020 Junior Boys and Junior Girls Club Championships. Jesse Trapp and Scott Dutton for winning the 2020 Senior Ladies and Senior Men’s Championships and Sandy Maki and Bob Brinkerhoff for winning the 2020 Master Ladies and Master Men’s Championships. Cheers to all the winners and thank you to all the participants.
Volunteers are needed to fill our Club Committees for the 2021 season
It is hard to believe that the 2020 golf season is coming to an end very soon. We have certainly experienced some great weather so far this year. I hope that we can have pleasant weather in September to close out the final full month of the golf season. Last day of Club operations will be Monday, October 12. All the courses close after this date and from there our Turfcare team puts the facility to bed for the winter and construction crews start work on kitchen renovations. I hope that you get a chance to come out and enjoy the Club during this last stretch.
Please contact our General Manager, Ash Chadha for more information and or express your interest. achadha@glencoe.org
September is a busy month with kids going back to school, winter sports starting at The Glencoe Club and here at the Golf Club, all the various leagues winding down, we expect to have a very full tee sheet daily. I request that you have patience with access to the courses and food services over the next five to six weeks as we have to deal with frost delays, shortened daylight hours resulting in fewer tee times per day, as well as staff finishing for the season. We will do our very best to mitigate these things, but please be advised that there will be some impacts to our operations going forward.
Glencoe Golf & Country Club has the strongest membership value proposition in the city and will continue to thrive due to our great facilities. In September, our 2020 Trial Membership program will come to an end. This program was offered to Glencoe downtown Club members only and we had a total of 29 members make use of this opportunity. By season end, we will know how many of these members wish to continue their membership going forward. Last year we had a 34% retention rate with this program. We have been wrapping up our 2020 Committee meetings and I would like to acknowledge and thank all those members who volunteered and gave their time and energy to our Club. It was obvious that here was a group of people that care for each other as well as the Club and they had a significant role in shaping the Club over their time of service. Thank you! As we look ahead to 2021, we are going to need some volunteers to work on the various Committees at the Club. The Committees are: Grounds, Invitational Men’s, Ladies and Junior. If you are interested and would like to know more about volunteering in support of your Club, please let me know. The Committees meet about seven times a year for about one hour per meeting. All Committees contribute greatly to the overall member experience at the Club and it is a great way to give back to “your” Club. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our management team. Judy, Brock, Jen, Jordan, Lisa, Steve and Julie. Each one of them has done a phenomenal job under very trying circumstances. With COVID there have been no “manuals or play books” to go by, how your management team has adopted and managed operations this year is highly commendable. I sincerely hope that you feel the same way. Although this year has been challenging due to COVID, I feel that this has been a very good year at the Club, lots to be proud off and learnings to take forward. In conclusion, have a wonderful fall and stay safe.
This year, we have had a steady flow of new membership applications, but we still are looking for more members. I hope that you will consider talking to your family, friends, and associates about membership in the Club. I strongly believe that The THE FLAG | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 3

hat an interesting golf season. That summons up the year. With weather that didn’t want to cooperate in the early part of the year, to COVID-19 which caused a rewrite of how we partake in golf. The season has seen a 39% increase in play over last year. It has been an incredible year for the golf industry and a challenge to manage the restrictions put in place. The Glencoe Golf & Country Club has weathered this challenge well. The course has been in great playing condition, the leagues that have run have seen great participation, Food & Beverage have fed many hungry players after their rounds and the Golf Shop has had great deals to improve our game, or make us look good. The Club was looking at a possible capital project to the Clubhouse in the spring, as you will read in our President’s article the project was approved and we will proceed with renovation on the kitchen starting this fall. Very exciting! In an unprecedented year with no history or playbook to follow the Committees, employees, and Management did a remarkable job of maneuvering the Club through the restrictions, which allowed us to enjoy a somewhat “normal” year of golf. I would personally like to thank the chairs of each Committee that give so much to this Club and its success: » Men’s Committee Staurt Wigmore (Men’s Captain) Tyler Brill (Vice-Captain) » Ladies’ Committee Liz Young (Ladies’ Captain) Candis Strong (Vice-Captain) » Junior Committee Erin Murphy (Chair) Sherry MacDonald (Vice-Chair) » Grounds Committee Larry Strong (Chair) » Invitational Committee Dale Goehring (Chair)

I would like to expend my thanks to these individuals and their Committees for their time and commitment to The Glencoe Golf & Country Club. I would also like to thank Ash and his team, that have listened, supported, provided and guided the Club through this challenging season. Finally, as this season comes to an end there is always the need for new people to take on roles in Committees. If you want to better understand the Golf Club, have ideas, or want to give back to the Club, please let myself, Judy, or Ash know and we can help you to find out more. It is the volunteers that help to make this Club a community. It has been my honour to serve as Golf Committee Chair over the past two years. I would like to thank all those people who gave input, those that volunteered, and the staff that work tirelessly. Without these people The Glencoe Golf & Country Club would not be where it is today, a premier golf club in Canada, which we all should be proud to be a member. THANK YOU!

t’s always a sad time of year when the mornings start to turn cool and the dreaded frost delays become the norm as it’s a sign that the golf season is slowly coming to an end. Though 2020 has been anything but a typical season for golf, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been a success. The men’s event calendar was a bit on the light side for 2020 but the events that did proceed were welcomed with fantastic attendance and lots of great memories. Men’s Night continues to have tremendous turn out this year with the new online scoring feature getting a lot of great reviews. It even seems like the weather has cooperated and Tuesday hasn’t been the favourite day for rain this summer.
The Glencoe Cup is September 18 - 20 this year. This is a three-day event in a Ryder Cup format and is a great event to round out the Men’s program and one that you won’t want to miss. Thanks again to Gord, Judy and Ash for their continued help with organizing and bringing together all the men’s events this year. We also all know that none of these events would happen without the rest of the Golf Professional Team, Bruce and the ODS team, and Brock and the Turfcare crew. Lastly, I think an extra special thank you needs to go out to each and every member of The Glencoe Golf & Country Club team for making 2020 the fun, safe and successful season that it’s been. THANK YOU!
Though there are a couple events that are still in progress, I’d like to congratulate the following members on their performance at the respective events: Stampede Stableford: Davis Elliott, Gord Lackenbauer, Phil Matthias and Ray Patel Senior Men’s Club Champion: Scott Dutton Master Club Champion: Bob Brinkerhoff Men’s Club Champion: Darryl Joy

We went to Zoom meetings, cancelled many early events and then finally got into the swing of things with starting all leagues but in a very different way. Participation in all areas has surpassed the normal numbers. We welcomed our new PGA of Canada Professionals, Shannon Raina to the Ladies division and Colin Yarchuk to the Senior league. Both have proven their skills in being innovative and creative with finding ways to make the golf experience great. We were able to complete many events successfully including Match Play, Senior Club Championships, Club Championships, Solheim Cup, the Glen Derby and the upcoming Closing Triad on September 12. The Black team won the Solheim event this year! Congratulations to them. We are always looking for fresh faces and ideas on the Committee, if anyone has an interest in being on the Ladies Committee for 2021, please advise Judy or myself. We would love to have you.

his has been an amazing year for junior golf as we have seen golf camps and lessons explode with new golfers this year. Junior night on Thursdays has seen a busy tee sheet with juniors of all ages coming out to enjoy a snack and a round of 9-holes on the Bridges. A huge thank you to Glen and the work he’s put in to making this such a fun night for kids. Another thank you to our Privileged Junior Members and other mentors who have made it out on Thursdays to inspire our young golfers. Those of you who follow junior golf may have noticed Glencoe is being well represented in tournaments this year. Big congratulations to the Junior Boys Club Champion of Carter Code and the Junior Girls Club Champion of Grace Bell who both played well this year to win their respective divisions. Well done!

verall course conditions have been excellent this season. Our spring and early summer were wetter and cooler than normal followed by some intense heat in late July and August. Brock and his team successfully adapted their processes to the challenging conditions we are all experiencing such that the golf course has become our “second home” as evidenced by the surge in rounds played this year.
Larry Strong Grounds Committee
Several major projects were completed, the largest of which was the Turfcare Auxiliary Building with its grand opening in July. In the past 12 months a lot of attention has been directed to the Slopes course including tree removal and bunker reconstruction behind 1, 3 Gold Tee Box reconstruction, and a total makeover surrounding the green on 5. In addition Slopes 2 green had a rough start at the beginning of the season due to ice damage but it has come back nicely and with the purchase of a new cover for the green that will help to alleviate future ice damage.
In 2021 we will be looking forward to opening the West Tee. That project was completed in early August and is coming along very nicely. The sod nursery beside 3 Lakes Tee Box also got a facelift this summer to provide fresh new turf for years to come. Projects for the remainder of the season and into 2021 will focus on Forward Tees (architect has been engaged), more bunker improvements on The Meadows, Tree Management (planting, transplanting, removal) and finally a property wide assessment of drainage. I would like to thank our Grounds Committee members for their engagement and contributions this season. They are the ambassadors that provide great feedback along with the general membership such that we are continuously striving to maintain and improve our “second home”. Brock and his entire Turfcare team should be commended for a job well done this season.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD PROFESSIONAL
E
ven though September is here we are hoping that there are many more warm, sunny days and rounds of golf to come. Sadly, fall arrives with shorter days and the challenges of early morning frost. We will be looking at the best method to maximize tee times this fall while keeping safety and COVID restrictions at the forefront. Watch the Club’s Monday emails for further updates.
Judy Forshner, PGA, BEd Head Professional jforshner@glencoe.org
Fall is also a time when we have to say goodbye to many of our seasonal employees. We thank them for the wonderful job that they do and all that they bring to the Club. We wish them every success in the offseason.
It is always interesting to compare the rounds of golf season to season. The pandemic has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of rounds being played. The rounds of golf in 2019 from May 4 through August 25 were 35,589 and for the same time period in 2020 the rounds were 48,532. There are always pictures of interest taken throughout the season. This year seemed to be the year of increased wildlife in the area. Below are a few pictures taken on the property.
Best wishes for fabulous golf and may the wind always be at your back.

GOLF SHOP
I
would like to highlight a major milestone that was reached during this crazy 2020 golf season by one of our veteran Golf Shop Assistants.
John Moss was originally hired on May 7 of 2013. Since that time John has worked 6 1/2 seasons in the Golf Shop, and one season in Food & Beverage.
Steve Thomson, PGA PGA Associate Professional/ Golf Services Manager sthomson@glencoe.org
John has been an invaluable member of the Golf Operations team. Each Professional is responsible for a member program, and with that comes a lot of time-consuming organization and administrative work behind the scenes. During the operation of countless member leagues and tournaments John has done everything from organizing tee times, assisting with registration, selecting prizes, and finalizing the tournament billing. For every successful member event you can bet that John played an important role behind the scenes. My former boss had a saying when his Golf Shop would get crazy busy. “Put it on low and go slow”. The point he was trying to teach was to stay calm, especially when it was busy. This is one of John’s best traits, and it serves him very well during the times when our Golf Shop can get very hectic. Whether the phones are ringing off the hook, the shop is crowded, or dealing with an upset member, John never loses his cool, and his mood never changes. This behavior has a calming influence on the rest of our team. Being one of our veteran Golf Shop Assistants John has played a large role in assisting with the training
of all our new team members. The sheer volume of information that you need to know working in the Golf Shop can be very challenging. We have been lucky to have many, many great team members over the years, and John has played a big role in their development. Earlier this season John became the first team member to reach the $1M mark in career sales. This grand total includes the following numbers: • $434,000 in Guest Fees, which is over 60% of the Guest Fee budget for one entire season. • $201,445 in Tournament Billing • $84,000 in Men’s Apparel • 11,132 Golf Balls, which if stacked on top of each other would reach 60 feet above the roof of the Saddledome. • And the list goes on... I wonder about how many great, funny, or crazy stories took place at the Club with those 11,000 plus golf balls. If you want to hear one great story, the next time you see John ask him about the only tee shot I ever saw him hit while he was working the on course beverage cart. Congratulations on reaching this major milestone John, and on behalf of the Golf Operations team thank you for all your time, efforts, and friendship over the past 7 ½ seasons.

t is hard to believe that September is here already. Looking back, I wonder were the days went and how did we get here so fast. It has been great seeing everyone playing and practicing lots this year. I’ve heard many stories of the most rounds played ever, and best scores shot ever. Let’s hope that our fall golf season is a good one and we get lots more sunny warm days before the season comes to a close.
I
BALANCE
This month I want to focus on a few golf tips inspired by Jack Nicklaus. They are classic tips that helped with my own game over the years and I used them in my teaching to help others to play better golf too.
ARMS CONTROL THE SWING
WIDE ARC, COIL & EXTEND Jack wanted to take a wide circle swing with a full turn on his backswings to get his body coiled completely for maximum power. He would then try to swing through the ball and try to get as much extension as possible as he completed the swing into the finish. He said in one of his teaching videos “I would try to do is take a comfortable stance, nice and smooth, and make nice big full turn back and through to produce longer straighter golf shots.” A great way to help produce this wide arc is to focus on a smooth one piece takeaway where the whole left side (RH golfer) is turning as a unit and your body will properly rotate and help you load power in the backswing and get your on your way to hitting quality shots.
Jack wanted to keep your weight inside your feet when transferring weight back and through during the swing. If your weight is moving to the outsides of the feet, this is leading to swaying and will lead to problems. When swinging think about where your weight is in the swing will help you control your balance.
Very contrary to modern day teaching of the body controls the arms. Jack knew where he wanted his arms in the swing and he would use his body to help him get into those positions so that he could swing freely. In the backswing, he let his right hip move back so that he could turn back into a powerful position and this allowed his arms to swing down without his body getting in the way improving his path, speed and contact into the ball.
PLAY WITH YOUR NATURAL TENDENCIES When you play with your natural tendencies instead of against them you make will make the game easier. This is especially true when you need to hit that important shot. Build a swing that allows for the natural motion that allows you to swing freely with minimal extra work.

riting this in the end of August after a month of awesomely hot weather, and I am going to be talking about winter. I know, I know!
Brock Coates, AGS Head Superintendent bcoates@glencoe.org
Although we focus on playability of the property until closing day, we are already starting to prepare all surfaces for the upcoming snowy season. This year we are hoping to see Mother Nature hold off well until November, rather than significant snow falls in September/early October like we have suffered the past two seasons. Slowly raising the heights of cut, altering fertility programs, and protecting against harmful fungi are a few things that start after Labour Day. Having a hardy turf plant going into October will help set the stage for quality spring golf next season. Be it ice damage or cold temperature injury; we have strategies to help protect all putting surfaces.
On our Bentgrass greens (Bridges & Forest) we leave them exposed to the elements, hoping Mother Nature will help take care of the infestation of annual Bluegrass. Our biggest concern is ice formation before January 1. To combat that we will be covering some areas that have been troublesome the past few years and removing snow in vulnerable areas. On the Meadows greens where we promote annual Bluegrass we will once again be tarping all surfaces. The green on 11 has been a concern the past two seasons and will receive a new cover this fall. A perfect winter for the golf course is no snow until December. Once that snow arrives, we want it stay cold enough to stick around until early spring. Thank you all for the support through a very unique (fingers crossed) season.

A few silver linings have come out of these crazy times; a rotating menu that offered variety and high quality. Creative Weekly League Features that offered more selection. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and I look forward to continuing our relationship and providing you with the best possible experience here out at the Club. If you see any of these names on the tee sheet or run into them in the Clubhouse for the remainder of the year, please take the time to welcome them to the Glencoe Golf Family.

GOLF DAY Last month we hosted an event to promote membership opportunities called GOLF DAY. During this event we welcomed prospects that have inquired about membership from different age brackets (Senior, Principal, Associate, Families) out to the golf course to play 9 or 18 holes. They were given a cart equipped with complimentary snacks, water, Glencoe Golf logo’d item and membership information. Post round F&B did a fabulous job hosting
them on the banquet patio and offered them a taste of our menu by supplying appetizers accompanied with a beverage of choice. They were also introduced to key members of our staff, Ash Chadha (General Manager), Jordan Cameron (Head Chef ), Judy Forshner (Head PGA Of Canada Golf Professional), that assisted with answering further questions about the membership and experience at the course.

We received an abundance of positive feedback from our guests and the follow up has been successful. I hope to welcome some of these members to the Club for the remainder of the season and beyond! If you have a family member, friend or colleague who may be interested in a membership, please have them contact Lisa Rosengarten at lrosengarten@glencoe.org to set up an experience of their own!
MEMBERSHIP
We have 29 Trial Members and 9 Junior Members that participated this season! Intermediate category = 4 Associate category = 7 Principal category = 11 Senior category = 2 Active Spouses = 5
A big THANK YOU to the Membership for welcoming these members as one of our own and helping create positive experiences for them this season. It has been a pleasure getting to know many of them and we as a Club hope we can continue the experience moving forward for you and officially welcome you to the Glencoe Golf family!
As we see the season come to a close towards October, so will their experience as a Trial Member for 2020. These members will then have to make a choice to continue and join as a New Member or walk away having had the best experience possible. Having said that, our conversion rate last year was 37% and I’m confident we will see about the same, if not better for this season.
