PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

For this project, I had to redesign and customise a family holiday home measuring 14 x 24 metres for a family of four: Mum, Dad with their two adult children, located in Accra, Ghana. The goal for this house was to meet all the client’s personal needs: to create a comfortable and stylish environment, with rooms for the client's children and guests. The house was to be used for long periods of time in the summer, once or twice every two years, but could also be rented when the house wasn’t being used by the owner and his family. Therefore, the request was for each bedroom to have its own bathroom; two en suite and one separate. The design concept of the house was one of comfort, balance and nature. The design style of the inside was made to be modern, elegant and timeless, inspired by contemporary designs with a twist of African style through the use of an earthen colour palette, which gives a very warm and homey feeling. The colour scheme applied throughout the space is mostly an earthy one, with a cool tone. The materials used for the interior are reminiscent of earth elements, with a lot of use of wood, plants, straw and marble.

LOCATION Labone is a district of Accra, Ghana bounded to the south by Labadi Road. It is a very developed area with several villas and hotels.

02 THE BEACH HOUSE

This villa was created with the idea of a relaxing place, where you can find peace and serenity, using soft and neutral colours, with a style inspired by Villa Savoya, designed by Le Corbusier.

CITY OF ALGHERO

Alghero is a city on the northwest coast of Sardinia, Italy. One of the most beautiful and interesting places on the island, and the old town it’s still preserves is distinct medieval charm, with the famous strong city walls, the stunning heritage of the historical centre, the charming beautiful beaches, an international marina and seascapes nearby and its special Catalan legacy. Alghero town has around 40,000 regular inhabitants, while the summer months can double or even triple its population with tourists and visitors.

FURNITURE AND COLOUR PALETTE The best way to furnish a beach house in a classic style is to choose decorations and colors that are reminiscent of the sea. In doing so, a connection is created between the inside and the outside. White is a color that will be used a lot in my project, in particular on the exterior and interior with blue, beige, and green inserts. The material of the floor is in light wood parquet with walnut tones. For the furniture, blue and white are the quintessential beach theme decor colours with soft elements and there will be addition of natural objects such as shells, plants and flowers placed inside containers and vases to give a personal touch to the furniture.

MATERIALS

Porcelain stoneware Stoneware has the lowest porosity among ceramic materials, it absorbs less water and therefore is at less risk of cracking or crackling under pressure caused by the increase in volume of water as it freezes. Great temperature excursions are therefore not a problem for porcelain stoneware, a compact material which is homogeneous throughout its entire thickness.

FURNITURE PLAN

SECTION A

Iroko parquet Iroko is an African hardwood, a golden brown colour when first sanded, which darkens over time to a medium brown. It has a relatively coarse grain, is of medium weight and has similar strength properties to Beech, making a very good robust floor. SECTION B

MATERIALS

White chestnut wood In addition to being aesthetically beautiful and suitable for being outdoors, it is a wood that is not afraid of humidity. it is resistant to atomospheric agents, salt and sea water thanks to the tonic acid present in the fibers. Furthermore, it does not require particular treatments and maintenance interventions

EXTERIOR 3D RENDERING

Trachyte stone Trachyte is a very resistant Sardinian natural stone, particularly suitable for outdoor use, in cold, rainy, and salty climates.

RENOVATION OF RENOVATION OF PIAZZA LEONARDO PIAZZA DA VINCILEONARDO DA VINCI

This square is a public park in the heart of the district of the City of study of Milan, Italy. It is located in front of the university ( Politecnico di Milano ), but it has been heavily criticised because of its neglect. The greenery and the flower beds are poorly maintained, there are paths between the flower beds for people to walk through the park and the benches are unhooked from the ground and placed randomly. My intervention in this park will be to create movement, giving different layers and levels to the surface, adding small, medium and large boxes which can be used as study areas or relaxation zones, or simply places where people can go during bad weather and still enjoy the park.

FORNASETTI FORNASETTI STAND STAND

Pietro Fornasetti’s work is based on the continuous evolution of specific themes. Letting his imagination run free, Fornasetti has been able to constantly reinvent and reinterpret an image. Among his themes, the most recurring are the sun, cards, harlequins, hands and self-portraits, but the most famous one shows the face of the singer Lina Cavalieri. For this stand, I wanted to show Fornasetti’s concept by placing his most famous work at the entrance and by creating an illusory sense of movement inside by inserting black and white stripes. The furniture elements chosen for this stand were based on chromatic lines: red, white and black tones to maintain conformity in the stand.

WHEN THE NATURE BECOMES DESIGN With this project I wanted to combine the concept of “human being” and “nature” using natural elements such as earth and water, placing them inside a house, with the use of lamps designed by me. Revisiting an old architectural technique “ Butabu” I created three type of lamps ( ceiling, bedside, and floor lamps). The structures of the three lights sources are strongly reminiscent of ancient African culture. My intention was to make people appreciate the old technique in a new way through interior design

06 TILE THAT SHOW VIBRATIONS

What if you can actually see the movement around you, the movement created by a human or things such as a car, subways and also your steps? All the movement that our eyes can’t see but our body and our ears sometimes can feel or hear. The way I thought of doing that is through a tile which, thanks to vibrations, sound, and the movement of an object, can show that.

Chinatown Restaurant was built in 1991, the owner of the restaurant is Edward Wu who opened it and has been running it with his family since 1992. Chinatown is a restaurant in Scotland that serves authentic, Hong Kongstyle cuisine. The building the restaurant is in is divided into two parts, in the first part there are fifteen shop units and the restaurant is in the second part.

The part that stood out the most to me, was the floor inside the mall along the corridor. The floor is made of tiles that are mostly white, with some blue, pink and brown that altogether creates a geometric shape such as pentagons and squares with a repetition following a vertical line. At first glance, I thought that the tiles may have been there for over 50 years due to the deterioration and damage, some of the tiles have been removed and replaced with black material that does not give a pleasant looks to space. The strange part is that the tiles close to the shops are in perfect condition, the damaged tiles are mostly in the middle part where people walk.

It was a study point for me to try and understand why the damage was caused, I started to analyse the area and I found that there were a few things that could have caused the damage. The analyses show that the broken tiles could be cause by vibration caused from subway below the building and also the motorway on the top of the building are all energies that impacted the tiles making them give way and break. From here I started to do experiments, I had to prove that constant vibration in one spot, long-term can create movement or in this case breakages. As part of this I started to study how vibration impacts material and I started to experiment with common objects that are used every day. I experimented using light materials like sugar, salt and herbs on Plexiglas, tipping it with my finger to see if I can notice any movement but, unfortunately, those experiments did not work. I think the energy that I was impacting on the surfaces was coming from only the top and not from the bottom of the Plexiglas. Experimenting with these materials gave me the chance to understand more about vibration and how it works.

The idea The idea is a tile that shows the movement and vibrations caused by the surrounding environment. It’s a way of decorating a space and making human beings interact with the vibrations around them. The tile is made with transparent external material, and contains an object made from a substance similar to sand, whose movement becomes easier once it receives the vibrations. The purpose of my floor tile is to give people a new experience of space, and to show that there is much more than the eye can see. The first use is to make the floor tiles interact with the action underneath and above the surface, so that now, the floor is no longer still but has become a way of showing how a movement such as steps creates a vibration in a material, which then reacts to the action. Another use of this tile is that it can sense vibrations underneath the tiles which can be caused by subways, trains and road works, or by natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides. All these natural disasters have a devastating impact on our planet and our lives, and most of the time they arrive unexpectedly. Sometimes we receive the alert when it’s already too late, and we don’t have time to save ourselves. The product solves this problem by providing an alert; not with sound, but with the vibration caused by the material inside the tiles. Nowadays, we have earthquake-proof buildings that help keep the building intact during a strong earthquake, but no alerts, so this product can remedy that issue. The product’s unique point is that it has multiple uses. Apart from providing a health and safety alert, it can add to the character of a place; it might even inspire children to play games in the street, based around the movement of the tiles! The latter is also an innovative element of the product.

07 ABOUT PAUSE

TIME POD I designed a pod where the aim is to create a new type of living space where it is possible to spend a long or short period of time to meditate, relax, escape from the everyday reality and to stimulate creativity, without the sensation of boredom, and where one is able to engage with one’s own thoughts. The intention is to design a space or a dwelling which can be inhabited for more than a few minutes or hours. If required, we can find some alone time with ourselves in a space that evokes a sense of inner peace, so that we can be creative and relaxed.

For the realisation of the space, I decided to create a compact structure that isolates a person from the surrounding environment, and to be able to do that, I chose a pod as my design space. The inspiration for the pod was a project by Maurice-Claude Vidili, the Isolation Sphere. Vidili was a visionary, who decided to design the Isolation Sphere because he wanted to create a place where he could work and complete tasks without any external distractions, so he could concentrate more on his work. My structure was inspired by this concept of complete isolation, in which there would not be any distractions from the outside world. It would contain a space where everyday noises and distractions would be eliminated once inside the structure, and to be able to achieve this, I decided to use soundproofing for the external structure. Inside the pod, there are only two elements: a table and a chair. The reason for this is to prevent people being distracted by other furniture and to enable them just to sit and do nothing. These two elements have been designed so that once they are combined, they can become a sitting area for meditation. The top of the table can be flipped to reveal a cushion on its underside, which will allow greater comfort for the individual sitting on it. Meditation Space by Tadao Ando was another important inspiration for the realisation of my structure, and it helped me to define the atmosphere that my pod will have. This building is very monumental and simple as a structure, with only four identical cast iron chairs inside with rigid and high backs, which forces the seated individual to maintain a straight posture, thereby encouraging meditation. One of its unique characteristics was inspired by Ando’s study of the way in which natural light touches the surfaces of buildings. The circular slab on the ceiling inside the structure reflects this, as it does not cover the totality of the circle but lets through a circular stream of light. I did not want to add windows to the pod I designed, because I did not want there to be any kind of reference to time inside this structure. I still wished to create a situation where there is light and shadow in the structure, and the aim was for the person using this structure to be able to decide how much light and shadow they required. Therefore, I added a CoeLux light system to the top of the pod. This is a type of light designed for windowless living spaces. It gives the feeling of a real window with constant illumination given by the sun, in this case a fake sun. With a system similar to a curtain, it allows the person who is using the pod to regulate the light inside.
