PNoy assures emergency powers won’t be abused Aquino cited the projection of the Department of Energy of a “critical electricity situation”
MANILA (Sept. 30) - President Benigno Aquino III assured on Tuesday that the emergency powers he is seeking from Congress to prevent a looming energy crisis will not be abused. Speaking at the Energy Smart Philippines 2014 in Pasay City, Aquino said he asked Congress for a joint resolution authorizing the national government to contract additional generating capacity to ensure that the economy will remain strong during a power crisis. "I am aware that investors in the energy sector are worried about these measures distorting the market, but let me assure you: government intervention is meant only to address the shortage. The sole goal of this initiative is to make sure our economy does not lose its momentum in the event of an energy shortage,"
Aquino said. Two weeks ago, Aquino formally asked Congress for authority to establish additional generating capacity to address the 300-megawatt (MW) projected deficit for the summer of 2015 in Luzon, and to generate another 300 MW in power reserves. Aquino cited the projection of the Department of Energy of a "critical electricity situation" next year due to the expected effects of the El Nino phenomenon and the scheduled maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya natural gas facility, among other things. He invoked Section 71 of Republic Act 9136 or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, which allows the government to contract additional generating capacity under terms and conditions to

Binay leads drop in latest Pulse survey MANILA - If elections were held in September, Vice President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe would win as President and Vice President. But the Makati City Hall building 2 controversy appears to have taken its toll on the Veep. This is based on the latest Pulse Asia Ulat ng Bayan survey held in early September after the Senate started inquiring into the alleged overprice that
happened during Binay’s incumbency as mayor. Binay’s main campaign theme has been his achievements in Makati. In that survey, 31% of Filipinos said they would vote for Vice-President Jejomar Binay as president. This overall voter preference puts the VicePresident ahead of 14 other personalities whose presidential chances in May 2016 are probed in the survey.
In second place is Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel A. Roxas III whose own presidential bid is supported by 13% of Filipinos. The other individuals with double-digit presidential voter preferences are Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago (11%), former President and incumbent Manila City Mayor Joseph Estrada (10%), and Senator Grace Poe (10%).

Binay’s numbers are down 10 points from 41% in the Ulat ng Bayan survey in June, before the inquiries began. The survey comes as Grace Poe expressed lack of interest in the presidency or any higher office. It was also done at the height of the Senate investigation into the Makati parking building 2, which strikes at the very heart of Binay’s campaign franchise, his track record as Makati City mayor. There are also reports there are moves to impeach the Vice President. Binay is the leading presidential candidate in the rest of Luzon (32%), Metro Manila (33%), and Mindanao (33%) as well as in Classes D and E (32% and 33%, respectively). In Visayas, almost the same percentages express the same level of support for Vice-President Binay and DILG Secretary Roxas (27% and 22%, respectively). Meanwhile, the best-off Class ABC chose Vice-President Binay and Senator DefensorSantiago (23% and 17%, respectively). Roxas, meantime, sprinted into double digit territory at second place for the first time, from 7% in June to 13% in September. Roxas has reportedly been airing infomercials in Visayas and Mindanao. For UP Political Science Professor Jean Franco, Binay’s ratings could mean that people
are still remembering Binay’s performance when he was still a Makati mayor. “He invested a lot in sisterhood projects all over the city. This must be what is being remembered,” Franco said.
DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD
Pulse Asia President Ronald Holmes pointed out Binay’s early declaration for the 2016 election is a double-edged sword. While it makes him prone to early political attacks, he said it also gives enough time to answer and make people forget about these issues come election day. “Working to an advantage is that people know your intent. Wala nang pagdadalawang-isip. Sa atin kasi, sa mga eleksyon lalong lalo na single-winner competition, batay sa aming, ang maaga magdesisyon sinosusuportahan nila... early it provides you the opportunity to address the allegations,” he said. “Mahirap din pag-maaga ang atake. Pagdating ng eleksyon, wala ka nang malabas na maaaring makaapekto. Maaaring makalimutan ng tao lalo na kung nasagot na. May advantage yung maaga mo nasasagot. Maaga pa lang, pinipilit nang lagyan ng pagduda sa kaisipan ng botante iyong integridad itong nagawa sa pamamagitan ng alegasyon.”

Bongbong: What Swiss accounts? MANILA (Sept. 30) - Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Tuesday refused to talk about his family's Swiss accounts containing millions of dollars in alleged stolen wealth that was recovered by the Philippine government. Speaking to ANC's Headstart, Marcos steered clear of any talk about the forfeiture of his family's Swiss accounts, saying the family is no longer sending any lawyer to the proceedings. "Which Swiss accounts are these? All of these cases, we, the Marcos family has no longer been represented and we have not argued it in court anymore for many years now. We don’t send lawyers," he told ANC. He added that he himself does not have a Swiss account. The Philippine government earlier said President Marcos stole an estimated $10 billion from the nation's coffers during his 20-year rule. In 1997, the Federal Court of Switzerland ordered that the secret Marcos accounts in Swiss banks be transferred to the Republic of the Philippines but subject to certain conditions. The Presidential Commission on Good Government said it has recovered over US$4 billion so far in Marcos's stolen wealth including real estate, investment bank accounts, shareholdings and other assets. Some of the assets are invested in prime New York real estate, jewellery, and about $600 million stashed in secret

NO HUMAN RIGHTS CASES In the interview, Marcos also steered clear of the law to provide compensation to victims of human rights violations during the dictatorship of his late father. He said the Marcos family is not involved in the compensation of rights victims. Asked if he will question the move to use his family's seized assets, amounting to P10 billion, to compensate the victims, he said: "I don’t think it serves much purpose. The decisions
in court have been made. It’s a question of implementing it. The judgments have been made. As far as the Marcos family is concerned, the judgments against us are there and that's the end of it." Still, the senator said the human rights commission had given them a certification that said "there are no human rights cases against any of us." The Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013 was signed on February 25 last year. The bill provides a two-year period within which to distribute the money to human rights victims. -abs-cbnnews.com
MANILA (Sept. 30) – Port industry players called for a moratorium on the truck ban to avoid repeating the congestion caused by this policy in Manila. In a report titled, “Port and Road Infrastructure for Greater Luzon Trade” released late September, the port industry players also sought multiple 24hour single lanes for all cargoes, especially for the North, South, and Cavite expressways. The single lanes provision should also come with a 24hour free flow exemption policy for refrigerated, perishable, and dangerous cargoes and the exclusion of Saturdays from truck ban rules. The government also needs to immediately implement road projects to provide alternate routes for cargo trucks going in and out of the Manila ports, the port stakeholders
said. The North Luzon Expressway-South Luzon Expressway connector road will resolve the current road congestion leading to the ports, the port industry players said in the report. The connector road proposed by Metro Pacific Transport Corp. links 3 ports – the Manila North Harbor, the Manila South Harbor, and the Manila International Container Terminal. But developing 5 excellent ports serving international and domestic trades will give shippers, consignees, shipping lines, and logistics providers more choices based on efficiency levels, the report said. The 5 ports include the 3 Manila ports and Batangas and Subic. The report also proposed the fast-tracking of the yard capacity development behind Berth 7 at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and the modernization of the Manila North Harbor Port’s facilities, cranes, and manpower.
Supply chain Bottleneck in the supply chain was evident when the Manila truck ban was imposed in February 2014, the report said. The ban was lifted on September 13. Rappler.com

Militant party-list representatives had warned that emergency powers for the President might entail "sweetheart deals, corruption, take or pay and high electricity rates." Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares said these are among the anomalies that happened after Congress granted then President Ramos special powers to solve the energy crisis. “The President asked for emergency powers just like Republic Act 7648 during Ramos’ time and the essence of this power is to ask Congress for authority to enter into negotiated contracts for additional generating capacity,” he said. In his speech on Tuesday, Aquino also assured the private sector stakeholders that the government remains committed to its national renewable energy program, which aims to add 9,931 megawatts of renewable energy-based capacity by 2030. - Philstar

PH cites peacekeepers’ professionalism before UN MANILA (Sept. 30) — The Philippines praised its peacekeepers in Golan Heights before the United Nations assembly in New York despite a recent controversy that put them at odds with some UN officials. In a speech Monday, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said the Philippine contingent "helped to safeguard world peace" in the face of grave danger as the conflict with Syrian rebels linked with al-Qaeda ensues. "They have served with
honor, distinction and professionalism in implementing peacekeeping mandates," Del Rosario said. The statement came following the UN Disengagement Observer Force's (UNDOF) commander Lt. Gen. Iqbal Singh Singha's criticism of the defiance of 40 trapped Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights as "non-professional" and an "act of cowardice." The UN hierarchy, through Undersecretary for Peacekeeping Operations Hervé Ladsous,

a series of dangerous, reckless and forceful activities in an attempt to impose unilateral change in the maritime status quo of the South China Sea," he added. Del Rosario then enumerated Beijing's unilateral activities that escalated the tensions and threatened the peace and stability of the South China Sea. These activities include the forcible occupation of the Scarborough Shoal in 2012 and the moratorium on fishing in areas of the South China Sea earlier this year. The Filipino official also reported to the UNGA the land reclamation activities of China in Johnson Reef, McKennan and Hughes Reef, Cuarteron Reef and Gaven Reef in the Spratlys. "These unilateral activities, among others, form part of a pattern of forcing a change in
the maritime status quo in order to advanca a so-called nine dash line position, an expansive claim of indisputable sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea," he said. Del Rosario said the Philippines supports the call for UN States Parties to clearly define and publicize the limits of their respective maritime zones so that countries will have greater certainty on their maritime spaces. He reiterated that the Philippines' Triple Action Plan (TAP) proposal contains immediate, intermediate and final approaches to address the provocative and destabilizing activities in the contested waters. "It is a positive, comprehensive and constructive framework, which brings together various initiatives that the Philippines and other countries have been advocating on the issue of the South China Sea for the past years," he said. also issued a denial that the besieged Filipinos were ordered to surrender their arms to rebels. In previous weeks, Filipino peacekeepers from Golan Heights arrived home earlier than scheduled due to deteriorating security conditions. Del Rosario, nevertheless, thanked the UNDOF for its "invaluable assistance" in the
"recent incidents" involving Filipino troops. "Our collective action highlighted the importance that the international community continues to accord to UN peacekeeping," he said. He also expressed deep concern over the "continuing and emerging dangers" faced by all UN peacekeepers.
"We believe that outstanding operational and tactical issues relating to United Nations peacekeeping must be resolved at the highest levels as soon as possible," Del Rosario said. Besides the trapped Filipino soldiers, 45 Fijian peacekeepers were held for two weeks by fighters from the al-Qaidalinked Nusra Front. -Philstar

Spouse sponsorship should continue without delay
FEW weeks ago I was told that immigration visas were no longer being issued to wives and/or husbands abroad including the Philippines. Virtually every day from Monday to Friday, Linda from my office is talking to Immigration Canada. She not only confirmed it herself but she also arranged for me to talk to Immigration Services first hand. I could not believe what I was told, it was something like "there will be no more immigration visas issued to spouses abroad because the targets were reached back in July for 2014". I know what I heard and confirmed it by repeating it. What purpose does it serve to hold back on issuing immigration visas once a person has met all the requirements and is processed?
It is hard to justify this measure when it is clear that so many individuals in Canada are waiting desperately for their loved one to join them in settling down and establishing their home. For compassionate reasons, visas for spouses should continue without delay, and I urge the government to not only continue to process these visas, but also invest resources into decreasing the processing time for spousal sponsorships.
The following is a quote from a question I asked the Minister of Immigration back on September 25, 2014 in Ottawa:

The ISIS threat
N the conflict zones of Mindanao, Islamic extremism is just one of the many security threats that residents have faced for a long time. It won’t be a big surprise if the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq, whose members have a penchant for decapitating captives and recording the inhumanity on video, manages to recruit supporters in the Philippines. The original members of the Abu Sayyaf fought against foreign invaders in Afghanistan. Before discussing peace with the government, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front also opened its camps to bomb makers and trainers of Jemaah Islamiyah, the Southeast Asian terror cell loosely linked to al-Qaeda. The government, with MILF support, is said to be working with the US government to prevent ISIS from gaining a foothold in the Philippines. The success of this effort calls for the same approaches in neutralizing other armed threats in Mindanao: even as extremists are hunted down, they must be deprived of public support by addressing the root causes of discontent.

ISIS militants will find kindred brethren in communities where poverty, social injustice and weak government feed extremism and insurgencies. The ongoing peace process with the MILF holds the promise of improvement in the quality of life in the conflict zones in Mindanao. But the road to the creation of the Bangsamoro is still long and arduous.

The government need not wait that long to speed up development in the conflict zones. With the support committed by the MILF leadership, the government can improve the security situation sufficiently to enhance the environment for luring investments and creating meaningful jobs in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and contiguous areas that may be included in the Bangsamoro. Alongside development efforts, security forces must step up their operations to consolidate the gains of the peace process and improve public safety. More effort must be made to neutralize the Abu Sayyaf, the MILF breakaway group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters as well as rogue members of the Moro National Liberation Front. The Philippines has been included in a list of about 40 countries believed to have ISIS presence. Terrorists operate in many parts of the planet, with several of the richest and most powerful nations among the prime targets. The difference lies in the way countries deal with the threat. The Philippines must show that it can effectively contain Islamist terrorism. This includes depriving extremists of reasons for winning recruits. Philstar

Dear wonderful and lovable family and my friends, My husband was on his way home from the airport when he spotted a beautiful rainbow and prayed that it would stay up for me to see. His prayers were answered because as he announced it, I was able to see the full bow hovering right in front of the house. And then a second bow came out briefly. Wow, that was amazing! They have just left to go back home so it was a sad moment for all of us, but we had the most amazing time ever. How God has proven Himself longing to be gracious to us, His kids. Thank you, my brothers and sisters-in-law, for the time we spent together! I saw His hand work miracles during the time you were here. When we were at The Forks yesterday, just as we were by the Tall Prairie Grass bakery they took out a fresh tray of cinnamon buns, steaming hot from the oven. Wow, that was simply irresistible! And right where we sat, there was a picture of "God's hand is always opening". I felt God's presence as we devoured those fresh buns. Today as we headed out for a walk outside the house it was cloudy and cold, I prayed
to God for the sun and all of a sudden God just opened up the clouds and the bright sun broke out. All glory and praise to you, oh God. We walked back and forth for about 10 minutes holding each other’s hands and then sat out to enjoy more of the sunshine and fresh air for 5 more minutes. It was so delightful to feel God's glorious and generous love through my brothers. So humbling that a God so majestic would take a moment to show us and make us feel special. Last Sunday another miracle happened as I was able to get up and attend church despite the intense pain and dizziness I had. Movement and loud sounds make me dizzy but God enabled me. Whew, God overrides any predicament. The pastor’s preaching was like refreshing rain. Each day He gave us a refreshing drink, even a neighbor and sister in Christ opened her basement for my siblings. A couple cooked hot Filipino meals for us that week. So many sisters in Christ came to our rescue at that time. The list is too long to mention now, but my brothers and sisters, you have been so gracious to us over the last year. Thank you for sharing this journey with us, always reminding us not to give up. We feel God's

OMETIMES the circumstances of our lives are not always the best. A couple of weeks ago, my wife was a bit down due to some challenges we were facing. My wife and I share the same Email account. When she checked our Email she had no idea that she would receive encouragement and inspiration at a time she needed it the most from a letter written by a friend and co-believer in Christ who is stricken with cancer.

Fake democracy
W
ITH the kind of leaders who have ruled our country in the past, the present and, in all probability, even in the future, it looks like we will not be able to solve the poverty problem of our land and to attain economic prosperity like our neighboring countries. Through all these years since we became an “a democratic and independent Republic” we have seen that poverty in this country and our lack of authentic economic progress is mainly due to graft and corruption in government. We looked forward to this present administration and elected P-Noy as president to solve them. But what is happening to our country now clearly shows that corruption in government has become more rampant especially among PNoy’s K K K. The sad part here is that when they are implicated in anomalies P-Noy is even the one defending them. P-Noy is really a big disappointment to those who elected and supported him except obviously to the members of his yellow brigade who are making hay right now. One thing very clear at this time is that if any poor man wants to get rich quick in this country, all he has to do is to join the government. The best example I can cite here, based on his own pronouncements in a recent speech he delivered to answer the multi-billion anomalies he has been implicated, is Vice President Jojo Binay himself. In said speech at the PICC which looked more like a po-

litical rally, Binay proudly proclaimed that nanggaling siya sa kahirapan. But after he joined the government, first as appointed Mayor of Makati and then elected and re-elected to the same position for so many years until he became the Vice President of our country, he is definitely not mahirap anymore. In fact in defending himself against the exposes in the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, he sounded so proud of his poor and humble beginnings compared to his present state of life. Indeed, no one can win and become Vice President of the Philippines if he is still mahirap because said position can be attained only by spending millions or even billions of pesos in campaign expenses. As a lawyer, Binay knows that the clear, positive, straightforward and direct testimonies of witnesses presented against him detailing the anomalies he and his family have committed, are stronger and more credible evidence than his bare denials and contention that they are mere “recyclable lies.” If he wants people to believe that they are indeed “recyclable lies” he must show and tell the people the whole truth backed up more concrete proof that no anomalies in these transactions
Today we face not only a crisis of leadership but a crisis of morality. The battle we are fighting is not just political or economic, but a spiritual battle. The war is not between rich and poor, but good against evil. or that he and his family are not involved. His bare denials are not enough. If we consider that he is the leading presidential aspirant at this stage when lingering doubts surround his integrity and honesty and about whether he and his family has accumulated wealth from unknown and questionable sources, the future indeed looks bleaker for our country. Going over the political horizon, no one without shady records has emerged or has come out openly yet who can be serious challenger and a better choice. So it really looks like there is no solution in sight to our socio-economic and political problems. There will be no change in the dirty kind of government that we have been enduring since we became a democratic republic. In this connection, let me just cite pertinent portions of these accurate analyses and observations by a reader, Mr. Willy Arcilla who has apparently been studying and continuously looking into our situation. In his well written essay he wrote: “No Asia-Pacific nation ever succeeded in eliminating poverty and rising to economic prosperity on the back of a US-style democratic system of government – Japan, Korea,
China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand. Now, even Vietnam and Cambodia have overtaken the Philippines in poverty reduction. We have been on this “experiment” of an independent republic anchored on a US-style democracy for nearly three (3) generations since 1946. True, we were under an authoritarian regime for a brief 14 years, but we have been back on a democratic track for 28 years or twice as long as the Marcos dictatorship and yet the level of economic prosperity, quality of life and happiness index remains much to be desired… According to the Greeks who invented this system of government, a democracy requires an educated electorate. However, this is far from the truth in the Philippine setting when voters are only forced by poverty and hunger to sell their votes, or are swayed by their ignorance and illiteracy to vote popular candidates despite their incompetence or lack of character. Worse still is the sinister plot of politicians to deliberately keep their constituents uneducated to keep them beholden and secure their votes. The Marcos dictatorship was replaced not by a true democracy; rather it is now undeniable that Cory Aquino, perhaps unwittingly,
restored the old oligarchy of a privileged few and their political dynasties. Because of this pseudo or fake democracy, the country suffers from a vicious cycle of endless change whenever elections come. The incoming set of leaders tends to throw out everything the incumbents have done, specially their good programs in order to discredit their opponents and curry favor with constituents. As a result, not only precious time is wasted and scarce resources squandered, but continuity is lost, and most of all, the wisdom to avoid the same mistakes and build on best practices.” After his very thorough analysis of our dire situation, Mr. Arcilla believes, and I agree with him, that “only God is the answer and holiness is the solution. Let us humble ourselves and beseech Him… to send us our Moses, who led the Israelites in their exodus from Egypt into the Promised Land, and to send us our King David, who united and strengthened the Jewish nation and ruled for forty years, and our King Solomon, under whose reign of forty years Israel achieved its Golden Age. Theirs was not a Philippine-style political dynasty, but a God-centered dynasty. Today we face not only a crisis of leadership but a crisis of morality. The battle we are fighting is not just political or economic, but a spiritual battle. The war is not between rich and poor, but good against evil.” -Philstar

Bicolanos celebrate Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia BICOLANOS, led by their President Amado Mendoza, celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia at Kildonan Park on Sunday, September 21, 2014. Around 400 Bicolanos and their guests attended the mass celebrated by Fr. Sarce of St. Edward’s Catholic church. The St. Peter’s Choir sang during the mass. Fr. Sarce led the procession with the image of our Lady of Peñafrancia carried by male Bicolanos on the wide Kildonan playground. Later a group of food committee volunteers handed out lunches to the long line-up of attendees. Among the guests were Suzanne Hrynyk, candidate as Councillor for the Old Kildonan Ward accompanied by Gemma Dalayoan, co-founder of the Bicol Association of Manitoba. Melanie Wight, MLA for Burrows, also came later to join the celebration. -Gemma Dalayoan
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21-April 19): You might not be very flexible today, even if you understand that being receptive to the ideas of others could teach you as much as following your own brilliant thoughts. Although your positive approach to life helps you shake off the stress, you know there’s a big shift in the works now, making it nearly impossible to discern what’s coming next. Nevertheless, don’t be afraid to share what’s in your heart, even if you scare yourself. Stick to the truth and your fears will fade sooner than you expect. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You may be at a rather significant crossroads now, yet you still want to believe that you can keep things going just as they are. The fact is that something needs to change and you’re not sure who to trust with your dilemma. But even if you are ready to make your dreams come true, your emotions could become too volatile to contain today. Forget about trying to manage your feelings; embrace the unknown instead of resisting the inevitable. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Although you are eager to change the dynamics between you and others today, it’s challenging to regain normalcy once the energy begins to shift. There could be a lot at stake in a relationship now, but don’t try to force your will on anyone else. The more you attempt to control the outcome, the more distant you grow from your goals. Express your passions and remain open to the many possibilities ahead. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your heart is fully engaged, making it tough to set limits when sharing your feelings now. Complications may arise from your insistent attention to the big picture, even as you keep getting dragged back into the details. Maintaining a positive attitude is challenging today if loose ends start to unravel. Do the best you can to work with the uncertainty for a little while longer. Taking your journey one step at a time is the safest route to your destination. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It’s nearly impossible to let go of your unexpressed feelings that still linger beneath the surface. Although you think everything is settled, a personal drama arises. Just when you are ready to move on, a reminder dredges up a wave of powerful emotions. Don’t waste energy on fighting against the prevailing currents; instead navigate with your heart to work with the natural tides and not against them. Channel your intensity into your creativity and see what happens. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Your changing moods swing like a pendulum now, prompting you to go from focusing on the tiniest details of the day and then ponder universal concepts.
Unfortunately, either extreme leads you into tricky territory as you step beyond your usual pragmatic approach. Thankfully, you can learn something of value as you move back and forth between practice and theory. Exercising your flexibility allows you to get the best of both worlds. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You may as well be in the middle of a noisy crowd today as there’s probably little you can do to create the relaxing atmosphere you prefer. But it’s not that you are having a rough time; it’s just that everything seems overly intense these days. Give yourself permission to roll with your emotions, even if you aren’t as easygoing as others expect. You don’t always have to be the one who makes everything all right. Oddly enough, expressing your true feelings isn’t nearly as risky as you think. SCORPIO (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Your feelings are pulled in two directions today as you struggle with accepting the status quo. Even if you’re dissatisfied with all the details of your daily routine, you can still see the positive aspects of the bigger picture. Nevertheless, there are some elements of your life that you cannot easily change. Your current happiness depends upon your willingness to acknowledge what is beyond your control. SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21): It may feel like your heart is being bounced around by random circumstances today. You truly love the idea of adventure, yet you also long for peace and quiet so you can bask in the beauty of your journey. Unfortunately, you don’t have the luxury of wasting time on rosy nostalgia or restless fantasies. There’s too much happening now that needs your immediate attention. Keep breathing; calmer weather is on the way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Your stress might not be very apparent today, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s nonexistent. You may believe that you’re heading directly for unknown territory because you can’t figure out what others are feeling. Unfortunately, the more you attempt to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle, the more anxious you become now. Let go of your need to solve everything in one day and, surprisingly, you will suddenly have enough time to pursue what really matters. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You need to be accepted by those in your community, but you might think that they don’t even know the real you. Acknowledging your role in this situation is crucial, because you may be hesitant to share your feelings if you worry too much about gaining approval from others. However, your fear of rejection could be more problematic now than what you won’t disclose. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20): You want to be appreciated and admired at work, but you may not be inclined to go the extra mile necessary to be outstanding. You’re torn between your inner and outer worlds today. Pleasing others sounds so easy at first, but it grows more complicated once you actually begin the work. Don’t make any commitments that you can’t fulfill today.

Suarez pummels Iraqi, claims boxing bronze INCHEON, South Korea – Charly Suarez unloaded tons of powerful punches to the head of a defenseless but unyielding Iraqi Hasan Anmar Jabbar Hassan and won a unanimous decision to advance to the medal round of the lightweight class (60Kg) of the Asian Games boxing competitions yesterday. Suarez inflicted the biggest damage with a combination of left hooks and right crosses and occasional uppercuts that jarred the inexperienced Iraqi, who simply wouldn’t give up despite the Filipino’s deadly blows and his failed attempts to land decent punches of his own. The judges gave Suarez a unanimous 3-0 verdict (29-27) despite being given a one-point deduction from his card for rule infraction. In the other bout, middleweight Wilfredo Lopez out-
classed another Iraqi, Waheed Waheed Abdulridha Waheed, 3-0, to advance to the quarterfinal. He was leading on all judges’ records in the first two rounds but lost steam in the third which went to the Iraqi. Still, the win put him and Suarez in the quarterfinal where they join lightlfyweight Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga and bantamweight Mario Fernandez for a chance to win at least a bronze and a place in the gold medal round. However, to reach the semifinal, Suarez will be up against 2013 Asian championship bronze medalist Alkasbeh Obeda Mohammed Mustafa of Jordan. Alkasbeh, who scored the only stoppage in the lightweight class with a TKO over Han Soonchul of Korea, was also bronze medalist in the tough Giraldo Cordova tourna-

What's next for Gilas after Asian Games letdown?
MANILA – After Gilas Pilipinas' disappointing performance in the 2014 Asian Games, the focus must now shift to the FIBA Asia championship next year, as well as the 2016 Olympics, according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan. After a respectable showing in the 2014 World Cup in Spain, Gilas sputtered in Incheon as they lost two games in the quarter-finals – including a heartbreaker to Asian rivals South Korea – which dented their chances of advancing to the medal round. The team still had a slim chance of making it to the semifinals, but those hopes were dashed when they won by only two points against Kazakhstan. "Quite a journey with its peaks and valleys," Pangilinan said on Twitter of the road Gilas has traveled so far. "The
road has been long and tough, the climb steep, the obstacles formidable from the get go." "We may have fallen short of what we all deserved to gift to our people after years of desola-
tion, but all of you persevered," he added. Pangilinan said they report their results in Korea with "heads bowed in sadness, but not in shame."

For example, muscle cells need 70%-75% water whereas fat cells require only 10%-15%. So, why is hydration impor tant? - In saliva and the stomach secretions helps to digest food - In the blood, it helps to transpor t ox ygen and nutrients to all the cells in the body - In body fluids, i t helps to lubricate joints, cushion organs and tissues and in urine it helps carry out waste products in the body - In sweat, it helps to remove body heat generated during exercise How much water should you be drinking? The recommended water intake is about eight glasses a day, however, if you are an active person or live in a warm climate, you may need to drink a lot more water. If you drink a lot of water like me, I find sometimes water gets boring so here is one tip that you can try to spice up your water intake. If you haven’t done so, add a slice of lemon or cucumber in your water bot tle or both to have some taste in your water from now on. It’s so delicious.
8 hours 19 – 55 6 hours Over 65 3. EXERCISE: We all know exercise helps us feel bet ter. But for some I understand that it might be dif ficult because maybe we can only do cer tain exercises lightly. Whatever your reason may be, everybody can do any type of physical activities. Here are some mental benefits of exercise: - Exercise will make you feel bet ter! Exercising releases endorphins, making you feel happy and positive about yourself. - Concentration. Exercise can boost your concentration and mental awareness - Fitness reduces anxiety. Using your energy in an effective way helps you to rela x bet ter. - Confidence. When you exercise and relieve that tension while taking care of yourself, you can’t help but be proud of your accomplishments. You feel like a brand new you and you know you look good. - Self-discipline. It also helps you develop the skills of compliance and adherence. These skills will have a positive ef fect in all areas of your life. 4. EAT HEALTHY: We all know that eating healthy is impor tant but what else do we need to keep in mind when adjusting to eating healthier? There are many vitamins and minerals that we get from our food, however there are also a lot of vitamins and minerals some of us may lack of. The two vitamins I want to focus on are vitamin C and vitamin D. What are the health benefits of vitamin C and vitamin D?
2. GET ENOUGH SLEEP: Sleeping is very impor tant. As I get older I understand why it is so. First we know it is very dif ficult to function with less or no sleep. Functioning on caf feine do not help at all. It only kept me dehydrated with all the cof fee I drank. Well here is why it is impor tant to have enough sleep. - Your brain recharges - Your cells repair themselves - Your body releases impor tant hormones You need dif ferent amount of sleep depending on your age: HOURS OF SLEEP AGE 16 hours Babies 10 hours 3 – 12 10 hours 13 – 18
Health benefits of Vitamin C May lower blood pressure Boosts immune system Removes lead toxicity Fights cataracts Lowers risk of stroke
Health benefits of Vitamin D Reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Reduces risk chronic muscle aches. Reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease. Reduces risk of depression. Reduces risk of autoimmune disease.
5. DO YOGA: I’m sure you’ve heard that yoga is very beneficial for a lot of dif ferent reasons. I have done yoga before and just star ted to pick it up again this fall. There are specific exercises that are not meant for everybody but one thing I can tell you is that find the best yoga class for you. Everybody is dif ferent so if this is your first time doing yoga, be sure to seek a beginner’s class so that you don’t get discouraged on your first class. But if you like the challenge, yoga definitely will challenge you all right. Here are the health benefits of Yoga: - It helps increase your flexibility that will help improve the quality of your day to day life and also reduces your risk of injury when you exercise. - Improve your mental fitness because yoga focuses on your body and your mind equally. When you practice yoga, any stress that you’re experiencingmelts away and as a result you feel much calmer and more rela xed. - Improve balance as many yoga moves hold your body in positions which test your balance to the limit. - It helps with bet ter breathing as yoga promotes slower, more controlled breathing. My favorite par t of yoga is the breathing exercise. I feel that not everyone knows how to do deep breathing or diaphragmatic breathing. I find with my clients with upper back pain are all shallowbreathers which result in upper back pain and neck pain. The muscles are in a position to do more work during inhalation but really we need to include the whole torso or tummy during the inhalation process. I hope you consider trying yoga as par t of your exercise regimen. To get you star ted, you get one free yoga class at Insahyu Training & Therapy gym (250 Saulteaux Crescent), Saturday class at 11:10am. We read in the bible in I Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Regardless of adverse circumstances, we are to look for something to be thankful for. And there is always something for which we can be thankful! A Christian always has grounds for rejoicing and having a thankful heart. The Lord is sovereign in our lives. He is not oblivious to the things that are troubling us. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Frank Edward Peretti, Times best-selling author of Christian fiction, said “God does not waste an ounce of our pain or a drop of our tears; suffering doesn't come our way for no reason, and He seems especially efficient at using what we endure to mold our character. If we are malleable, He takes our bumps and bruises and shapes them into something beautiful.”

I haven't been able to look at my cell phone or the computer for the past week or so because of this dizziness and pain. I have also been avoiding TV or any source of bright contrast. Sound makes me dizzy so I couldn't even listen to music or talk on the phone much. No idea how I am able to sit up and write this update for you. Yes, these are chains, just like Paul when he was in prison, but they have become tools to offer thanksgiving and praise to a loving Father who is THE very present help in ANY kind of trouble. I will be meeting with my physician on Tuesday, please pray that God will give wisdom to us and the doctor. My husband is still on sick leave till the 22nd, recuperating from his eye surgery. Today he met with the eye doctor and said that his eye is healing nicely. Thank you, dear Father, and please continue to take care of my family. My son just came home from his 12-hr shift and this is aggravating his feet problems. He has been very caring and even offered to be my primary care giver last night, I was caught surprised and had no words to say. My daughter spends her time caring for me when she's not busy with school and work.

question. There was no shred of truth, not a single fact in place". The Liberal Party Immigration critic has also challenged the minister on this very same issue. Is what the Minister of Immigration saying accurate, if so why are there different immigration officials at Citizenship and Immigration contradicting the Minister? Time will tell. If the civil servants are telling the truth and the minister does not make changes, this alleged change will be a big blow to those in Canada who have been waiting increasingly longer periods for their spouse to receive their immigration to Canada
A life filled with thanksgiving keeps us continually aware that the Lord is close by. Getting angry and complaining will get us nowhere. They will not change our circumstances. It is with a thankful heart that we are able to receive God’s peace and joy. So each time we’re faced with trouble, let’s focus on God’s grace, goodness and mercy and thank Him. I guarantee you, this thankful attitude will carry us through to victory. visas. Today, spouses in foreign countries are already waiting an average of well over one year before they are able to come to Canada. That is far too long. The freeze that we were told about by Immigration civil servants is effectively denying spousal reunification for the rest of the year. This is simply unnecessary. The government should be showing more compassion to these individuals who have, in many instances, personally invested a lot of time, effort, and money to get their spouse to Canada. Of course, due to the long processing times, many must also put their personal lives on hold as they await the

It is not clear if Purisima’s appearance before the Senate will bring closure to the many controversies hounding him or bring him closer to the end of his career. We will know by the end of this day. The PNP, as we know, is a snake pit of factional players and disbursers of intrigue. That is testimony to how unprofessional this organization has become. Controversy comes with the territory, as we know too. It is also true, however, that too much controversy can hamper job performance. Delay The largest single investment project for the Clark economic zone may be in for inestimable delays, and even dissipation, as the project financier and the principal project contractor are embroiled in a legal tussle. The delays could impact on the prestigious international meetings scheduled for next year as well as discourage other potential investments to the zone.

Earlier this year, however, the project financier terminated its contract with Peregrine for cause. In response to Global City filing an international arbitration case in Singapore, Peregrine won a temporary restraining order from Angeles City Regional Trial Court judge Omar Viola to maintain the status quo. The trial court’s restraining order was subsequently reversed by the Court of Appeals. Despite the reversal, Peregrine continued to control the perimeter, impeding ingress and egress. Global City then appealed to the PNP Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agencies (SOSIA) to enforce the CA’s order and prevent Peregrine’s army of security guards from impeding work in the project area.
The projected Global Gateway Logistics City is a sprawling, well-planned aerotropolis astride the international airport. Spread over the 177-hectare leased area and including scores

week, or month.
In some cases, individuals are losing out on jobs because they cannot make decisions without their spouse being in Canada with them. All of these further compound the emotional toll that prolonged separation puts on so many individuals who are merely hoping to begin their life with their loved one here in Canada. Further, those who are waiting to sponsor their spouse should be able to check processing times online in good faith, and not have to worry that the timeframe is going to increase if they check back in another day,
Unfortunately, however, this is the experience of many who apply to sponsor their spouse and wait for the application to be processed. For those who have been hoping for their application to be processed this year and have yet to hear from Citizenship and Immigration, this measure by the government means once again, an increase in the processing time. It is hard to justify this measure when it is clear that so many individuals in Canada are waiting desperately for their loved one to join them in settling down and establishing their home. For compassionate reasons, visas for spouses should continue without delay,
City was still pending. The 72-hour TRO restored the status quo ante where Peregrine prevented new contractors hired by Global from entering the zone. Peregrine maintains its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract remains live until after arbitration proceedings resolve the question. The restraining order should have expired by now. The preceding events, however, indicate that Peregrine will fight the termination of its contract every step of the way, using every legal venue available to do so. Until the termination of Peregrine’s contract is final, and until a new contractor for the huge project is found, things will continue as they have been the past few weeks, with rival security agencies facing off at the project site. This is not an appealing sight for other investors considering participating in the Global Gateway Logistics City. This aerotropolis is important for our economy’s competitiveness in the decades to come. It will be a key factor in upgrading our deficient logistical system. It will encourage cutting edge companies to locate in an area where we have our best infrastructure, including our best air transport facility. It has been nearly a quarter of a century since we inherited this built-up facility from the US military. We have not done enough to fully realize the economic potentials of this zone. The planned logistics city will be a great leap forward — unless it is trapped in the vagaries of our bureaucracy and judiciary. and I urge the government to not only continue to process these visas, but also invest resources into decreasing the processing time for spousal sponsorships. Nineteen months is simply too long for individuals to have to wait. I believe more resources in terms of increasing the number of immigration officers can help to alleviate the processing issues that are causing such long wait times. There is some hope, maybe, that the Minister was not aware of what was happening. Now that he is, maybe he will provide clarity and allow immigration service employees to issue immigration visas to spouses again. We will have to wait and see. (www. mpkevin.ca)

war among the fans who claim stars from their favorite network looked far better than those in the competition’s line up. ‘The Naked Truth’ had its fair share of favorite stars, the ones who received the loudest cheers and claps from the audience.
