JANUARY FEBRUARY 2017
New Music Well that’s all over for another year and it’s time to crack on with making 2017 bigger and better than last year. As it’s a new year, we thought we would shine some light on some new music, created right here in Somerset. Although it may not seem like it from the outside, if you look for it, we have a massive pool of original music on our door step, waiting to be discovered. A great place to start looking is one of the many open
mic nights, which leads me to this issue’s front cover. If you do regularly attend open mic nights you will have undoubtedly bumped into the local legend that is Laz Clements and he takes this issue’s front cover just because we can’t believe it hasn’t happened before! Ryan Leese Editor

ANTIX MUSIC NETWORK Have you heard about Antix Music Network? We’ve seen it popping up all over the music scene in Yeovil and wondered what it was all about! Many have been impressed with the Antix Café Sessions being held monthly at Sienna Deli in Yeovil and the quality of artists performing at these sell out events. So when the chance came up to meet with Frazer Mitchell, the founder of Antix, we jumped at it and had a great discussion about the aims and views of this diverse group, his personal aspirations and plans for Yeovil’s music scene. In a nutshell, Frazer, who has recently returned to Yeovil, has given up everything to throw himself into his work with Antix.
With future releases lined up in the Melodic Breakbeat / Drum & Bass / Deep House scenes, and collaborations with established female DJs Jay Jazvin, and D-Vox, and singers James Grant and JoJo Saunders all awaiting release, Frazer Mitchell has a potentially exciting 2017 ahead of him. Kicking the year off at Bournemouth’s Hilton Hotel LEVEL8IGHT Sky Bar on New Years Eve, Frazer Mitchell is the ‘one to watch’ from the South West. ‘Holding On To’, a track written and produced by Frazer Mitchell, written by Adam Iam Sanchez, Stu Moore DrStulittle and sung by JoJo Saunders was released online recently. It’s now available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, etc. http://hyperurl.co/6mlyd2 Frazer is delighted that the track has already had air play on a national radio station! “All profits of this track go to the Antix Music Network, which aims to give undiscovered local talent an opportunity in the music industry. There’s an ever growing team of talented, creative people, and I really feel it’s picking up some pace now” Want to learn more, want to get involved? www.antixmusicnetwork.com
The latest DJ and production talent to emerge from the South West UK, Frazer Mitchell’s experience in the music industry takes some beating at just 22 years old. Performing classical piano solo to crowds in the hundreds at age 9, sessioning for covers band Whitestation, and now hosting his own radio show ‘Late Night Sessions’ on Abbey104, Frazer has taken the leap into the production world. Releasing a bootleg remix of Tulisa’s ‘Young’, scoring 50,000 Youtube views, in 2011, and a series of successful remixes, led to performances with the Cream and Ministry of Sound Tour teams, supporting Dave Pearce, and Judge Jules.

Somerset-based songwriter Joe Hardy released his debut solo album ‘Without Borders’ on 25th November 2016. Joe is a songwriter of great depth and variety and is a first-class live performer, whether solo or with his band. His emphasis on excellence is obvious to everyone. Joe has been playing stages of all sizes for over 10 years - for the last 7 as front man of rock band ‘Brought Into Being’ and is at home in a church hall, a pub or a festival, having honed his craft in all three… Now, with new solo material produced with friends, he has created a collection of songs of hope, songs of life, songs of love. With a mixture of acoustic tracks through to Pop and all out Rock, he has a desire to tell a story and draw others into the process. Check out the first video from the album recorded in the studio for the song Connection: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=rLeaxpSZNK4 During his time with Brought Into Being, he has had some great achievements including getting to the finals of international battle of the bands ‘Surface Festival’ and playing

The O2 arena - indigO2. They spent time travelling overseas to play in Europe and Brazil; also supported Toploader; released a successful album and have had multiple headline and supporting tours, playing UK festivals and venues. Without Borders is the result of two years of writing. During this time, Joe penned over 60 songs expressing different parts of his journey and telling the story of people he was meeting. Produced by friend and fellow musician Dave Griffiths, mixed and with additional production from David Evans and Dave Holder the result is an exciting and passion-filled album set to keep you listening from start to finish. Following a trip to Kenya working with children in an orphanage, he is partnering with charity Hope For Kids to raise awareness and support for them as an organisation with this release. DUSKWOOD - DESERT QUEEN
It’s a big thing for a band to make an album, not a sensible thing I’m told, but a big thing none the less! The sensible thing would be to spread the songs over two or three EPs, that way the band can flog three promotion campaigns rather than just the one. But when was rock n roll sensible? Just like an artist standing back and looking at a finished canvas, there is nothing quite like holding an album you have created. Local band “Duskwood” have done just that, a proper, old school, hard rock album. Although the band’s sound does cross over into the heavy metal zone, the groove and soaring vocals place “Desert Queen” in the hard rock arena, with more than a little hint of “Pearl Jam” to my ears. Duskwood were formed in 2011 and have gigged all over the southwest ever since, developing a slick and high energy live show, that carries over to new album. Check out “Duskwood” and “Desert Queen” at www.duskwood.co.uk
UNRULY MILK - SPILAGGGES
This new album came out recenly on CD via Blackcat Records (the shop in Taunton) it’s very much a local DIY, hands-on release. CDs were made locally and the package put together in-house. It’s a cool local story. Unruly Milk pile up loops of close-miked instruments against a background of threedimensionally reverberating VSTs. Then smattered with the occasional vocal samples and (on “Ambassadeurs”) even a recorded singer. Coming on like General Strike meets Position Normal, the results are as studiedly ragged as they are elegantly modern. The album is hard to describe: it’s a mixture of Garage Rock, Psych ‘Folk’, guitars, glitchy electronics - very LO-FI and ‘loose’... They have been described as part of The New Wave of Somerset Lo-Fi or NWOSLF and to understand that you need just listen rather than me try to describe it. Visit nwoslf. tumblr.com to listen to Unruly Milk and other artists from this new genre.

Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britan The hugely popular Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain returns to The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil on February 18th. With so many keen ukulele players in our town and the evergrowing membership list of Yeovil Ukulele Club, we thought it would be only right to publish our interview from the last time we met the group, during their 30th anniversary sell out visit to The Octagon Theatre in 2015. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting this bunch of entertaining, funny and ridiculously talented performers and can’t wait to hear them again in February 2017. Waterloo Music’s Dawn Woodward was delighted to meet the musicians and hear a little from them. We thought of a few key questions we’d like to ask them and two members, Richie Williams and Will Grove White, have given their answers below.
We first saw you perform at the Glastonbury Festival in 2005 and at that time we didn’t recall as many people being as familiar with the ukulele as an instrument as there are today. Apart from yourselves (obviously) what do you think is the cause of the instrument’s explosion in popularity over the last few years and has it been reflected on your audience sizes?
world today. The internet is a fantastic tool for niche interest things (good and bad, unfortunately) and the ukulele has benefited tremendously from it. When we started the Ukulele Orchestra, in the 1980s, it was impossible to meet other enthusiasts, unless you wanted to travel to the George Formby meetings in Blackpool, but now the internet is awash with groups, clubs and strum-alongs.
WGW: The internet boom has been a huge influence on the amount of ukuleles in the
RW: I think that one reason that the ukulele has seen a massive explosion in popularity
Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britan is because it is a social instrument – cheap and easy to learn to a reasonable standard, it’s almost impossible not to involve your friends in your first attempts at holding down a tune. Then they buy their own ukes, and it just snowballs – before you know it, another ukulele club has formed. Those who aspire to greater things can always look to the virtuosos ( people like James Hill, Jake Shimabukuro etc ) for inspiration but for the majority, it’s a karaoke substitute with one important difference – everybody can take part at the same time. I’ve always found playing a musical instrument is a wonderful way of meeting interesting people you wouldn’t normally meet. Who is the most interesting person you’ve met who you wouldn’t have met if you didn’t play the ukulele? WGW: The rest of the band! We’ve also met all sorts of weird and wonderful people along the way. My personal favourite is Antoine Carolus, who runs the most extensive website in the world about that most maligned of instruments, the nose flute. RW: Don McCullin, the famous war photographer, at Hay on Wye Literary Festival was without doubt the most interesting person I’ve met. Along with meeting people, I know your instruments have taken you to some amazing places. Assuming The Octagon Theatre, Yeovil is number one, what is your second most memorable setting for a concert? WGW: I loved doing Carnegie Hall, in New York City. It’s such an iconic venue and so many people I admire have played there. It was a real treat to do. But the most memorable would be the time we played for a pair of dancing camels. RW: Probably the Polar Jazz gig in Svalbard – not the actual concert venue, but the sheer fact of playing so close to the North Pole – and still managing to have an audience!
A lot of musicians play more than one instrument. Without smirking which band member has the largest second instrument? WGW: George used to play the Hammond Organ which may partly explain why he moved on to the ukulele – all that lugging, packing and unpacking led him to create the Ukes – a world tour with only hand luggage. RW: Well, without smirking it must be George’s organ – a Hammond organ, that is! How does it feel to have been going strong for thirty years? And is there another 30 years to come? WGW: It’s amazing to think we’ve been plucking together for that long, it’s been a tremendous journey… 30 more years? Who knows? Never say never… RW: A constant source of bewilderment to me. As for the next 30 years, who knows? We may well witness our clones taking our places . . . Thanks Guys, it was great to meet you! Congratulations on your 30th anniversary from all of us in Yeovil. Lead me Home Olivier and Tony Award nominee Ramin is best known for playing leading roles in both of the West End’s longest running musicals – The Phantom and Raoul in The Phantom ofthe Opera, and Jean Valjean, Enjolras, and Marius in Les Misérables. He also originated the role of the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies and made his Broadway debut as Valjean in the 2014 revival production of Les Misérables. Ramin said ‘I am looking forward to taking our Broadgrass show on the road for an extended run, especially here in the UK. It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to go around the country. These will be the only UK dates before I head off back to Broadway to open the premier of Anastasia.’ Ramin goes on to say ‘Broadgrass has organically evolved now for about 4 years. We have found a unique sound that we are all passionate about from songs from the show, to originals to covers that mean something to us in the band. It’s an eclectic show with influences from the rootsy sound of bluegrass to the passionate drama of theatre. But it’s all about the stories in the songs.’

Razzamataz Boosting children’s self esteem and confidence with performing arts It is a sad fact that performing arts is declining in England’s schools just as countries around the world are embracing it. A recent report by the Department for Education stated that the most commonly withdrawn subjects are drama and performing arts, which had been dropped in nearly a quarter of schools. But although the National Curriculum is struggling to find a place for it, performing arts is widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. It is not only for those that want to go on and make a career on the stage, performing arts stimulates all children’s creativity. It helps them make sense of their emotions, develops their ability to understand, allows them to face their fears in a safe environment, challenges their preconceptions about the world in which they live, develops their aesthetic sense, develops their language and communication skills, introduces new ideas to them and allows them to express opinions. Although ideally, performing arts should be accessible to all children in state schools, the reality is that this is not often the case. This is where affordable, part-time theatre schools really come into their own. These encourage all children and young people
to try their hand at performing arts because as well as it being thoroughly enjoyable, it has also been shown to have a significant impact on the process of improving literacy levels in children. For boys, who especially struggle with literacy, an action research project by the Lancashire Literacy team, which focused on improving boy’s writing through visual literacy and drama found that: “Stimulus from drama and visual approaches has also resulted in a greater control of voice, style and pace, and a positive attitude to writing for specific purposes.” Educational achievement aside, what performing arts ultimately give children, are the skills in which to better express themselves, leading to increased confidence and self-esteem. The format is quite sporadic - the idea is for musicians to be able to jump in and improvise together at will, there is a “leader, usually a singer/songwriter, to call the songs and if you know your way around the circle of fifths or you can groove on the kit and you just know that you could add that extra layer of magic, then you can pick up one of the house instruments and get involved. The Renegades
The Renegades are an exciting 5-piece Rock, Pop, Funk and Soul covers band based in Somerset. With a line-up of professional musicians with a huge amount of experience playing live and performing for many different types of functions, including weddings, parties, private functions, festivals and pub gigs to name a few. The Renegades have quickly become known as one of the premier covers bands in the South West. The band also owns and operates a full, top-of-the-line PA and lighting setup, which is proving very popular with customers who are organising events. All this adds up to mean The Renegades have the experience, know-how and equipment to make sure that your event is a resounding success.
A few members of the band came in to meet us recently at Waterloo Music for a chat and an informal interview. Jamie Witt, who we’ve had the pleasure of knowing for some time due to his connections as a guitar teacher in Yeovil, introduced us to Flic Keirle, the band’s amazing female vocalist and James Callum, bassist in the band. Seth Rowles, their drummer (ex Smoking Guns) and Adrian Morris, who plays keys in the 5 piece line up, weren’t able to join us. The group has been in its current form for about a year and clearly the chemistry is great between them! Performing a set list filled with many classics and standard covers, the band always puts its own twist on the music...they joked that they have yet to find a song that Flic’s vocal range cannot
The Renegades
cope with, but they will keep on trying! The band always change their set from gig to gig, no two are ever the same, this keeps it fresh! Although the members all have quite different influences and varied taste in music, the collaboration works due to the mutual respects the guys have for each other as musicians and the fact that they take turns in selecting the songs they work on... It did however slip out that Flic wants to cover a BeyoncĂŠ song and that Jamie has put his foot down! All said in good fun, the guys clearly enjoy working with each other. We saw their gig at the packed out Beach Cafe Bar in Yeovil on December 11th where the atmosphere was amazing, they sounded fantastic! Since then, The Renegades have announced that they have been booked at The Beach on New Years Eve... !
