Boarding Schools’ Association The Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) exists to
‘champion boarding and promote excellence’ within boarding schools.
Founded in 1966, the BSA is the world’s largest provider of boarding services and currently represents over 560
independent and state boarding schools in the UK and overseas.
BSA’s members directly provide outstanding pastoral
care to over 75,000 boarding students in the UK and thousands more in over 20 countries.
Our services include the training and professional
development of boarding staff at all levels in boarding schools, through a wide range of day seminars and
CPD courses, government relations, communications,
media, publications, conferences and events.

Boarding briefing papers, guidance documents
and textbooks
Publications are a great complementary solution to
support your in-house boarding development needs. A range of publications are available to member schools, including textbooks such as ‘Running a
School Boarding House’, ‘Parenting the Boarder’ and ‘Mirror, Mirror – Reflections on Boarding Practice’.
The BSA engages on behalf of members with UK discussions have included regulations effecting
boarding schools. We are regularly called to advise on issues such as National Minimum Standards,
Care Inspectorate (Scotland) Estyn, CCSIW, Ofsted
inspection regimes, UKVI, BREXIT and its implications for the boarding sector.
The BSA works closely with all major educational
membership associations, as well as Ofsted and the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) to ensure members are informed of the latest sector developments.
Media relations
The BSA communications plan aims to ensure the
association, boarding and member schools have a
consistent, strategic, pro-active approach to media
and social media strategy. This includes national, trade, international and regional placement and coverage of boarding stories and schools. Crisis
media advice and guidance is also available upon request.
Accredited Boarding Practitioner
Accredited Boarding Practitioner status is an
individual recognition of boarding staff making a personal and professional commitment to best
boarding practice. Applicants can apply at one of

Types of Membership
The Boarding Schools’ Association offers three types of membership:
Full UK member
Open to UK schools only.
Full UK membership is available to independent
boarding schools/colleges belonging to an official
education association (AGBIS, COBIS, GSA, HMC,
IAPS, ISA, SoH, ISBA, SCIS or another association
recognised by BSA) or a state boarding
school/college/academy. Membership suitability
may be reviewed in light of any significant events
effecting a member.
Full overseas member
Open to International schools only.
Full overseas membership is available to overseas
boarding schools/colleges who have undertaken and
passed the BSA Overseas Accreditation Scheme. OR
Boarding schools who are members of one of the
BSA approved associations (HMC, IAPS, COBIS, CIS). Affiliate member
Open to UK and international schools who have a
desire to move to UK Full or overseas member status.
Affiliate membership is available to UK or overseas schools not in membership of one of the BSA-
approved associations. Affiliate membership is
granted on the understanding the school will work
towards either full UK or full overseas membership.

Becoming a BSA member
All applicants must complete an application form and return to the BSA Membership and Marketing Manager. All applications for membership are validated by the BSA Head of Safeguarding and
Standards and then recommended to the BSA Executive Committee for approval. There are also additional requirements for the different membership categories:

Overseas Accreditation
The price for Overseas Accreditation depends on the school, location and
resources required. BSA is happy to provide a quotation for Accreditation for any interested Overseas Affiliate member school.
