edita’s ballet and opera programme
“Bruch’s Violin Concerto” with violin prodigy Shirlene Obara & the Nairobi String Quartet. Occasionally one of the many musical concerts I attend during the year strikes me as exceptional; this one left me speechless! I immediately knew I had to bring it to Muthaiga Club.
BRUCH ‘S VIOLIN CONCERTO Presents
on Thursday 5th January 2023 at 6.for 6.30 p.m. in the Ballroom performed by 15 year old violinist prodigy
Shirlene Obara with the Nairobi String Quartet and pianist Michael James
Kenyan prodigy, 15-year-old Shirlene Obara - still a student at the Manchester School of Music - is exceptional. What added enormously to the success of the whole concert was Michael James’ re-arrangement of the orchestral music, cleverly adapting it to a string quartet with piano playing a prominent accompanying part. He made it sound like a whole orchestra. This is a concert not to miss! It is the most riveting concert I have heard in many years.

“Juliet & Romeo (Beyond Words)” It is only right to call this edition of the famous ballet this way since Juliet here is the main interest for us in Kenya. Her name is Francesca Hayward, she was born in Kenya and is now a Prima Ballerina at the Royal Ballet. She has been chosen for this extraordinary rendition of the ballet, which does not take place on stage but has been filmed in the manner of a feature film on location in a partly reconstructed old Verona, giving us the advantage of the story flowing seamlessly.

“Song of Love” This is a very old, charming and extremely interesting film depicting the intertwined lives of three musical legends - Clara Wieck (Schumann), Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. The story spans from Clara and Robert’s meeting, their marriage and meeting Johannes, to Robert’s early death. A movie with such music legends can only contain the most glorious soundtrack with all their compositions and scores from other composers of their times like - very prominently - Franz Liszt.
“Song of Love” will be screened in the Ballroom on 2nd March, at 6pm.
