British Driving SOCIETY
The season seems to be getting up a good head of steam with many of the area shows already past. The HOYS tickets are flying off the shelf so good luck to all of you still in pursuit of one. As well as HOYS there are many other ways of collecting awards for example the Pleasure Driving Award, Leaf Spring Award and of course all the area shows where there are lots of ribbons to be had. Congratulations to Jessie DudleyApicella driving her pony Aghaderg Stand and Deliver on winning the Supreme Show Championship at the BDS Annual Show. I know that many of you have interests other than showing and it is heartening to see that the AC diary dates include a huge number of drives, rallies, picnic events and training days that allow you to get out there with your horses in harness and enjoy your driving. Also well done to Wales for their points award initiative for whips, grooms and supporters it looks like a very good idea.
the bonus of an interesting and informative piece on the Dog Cart. Continuing with the Junior theme I’m pleased to say we have our first Junior competition submission, please keep them coming. Just a reminder that the 2018 Spring edition of the BDS magazine will be a bumper issue for which I am looking forward to receiving lots of articles and photographs to celebrate the Society’s diamond jubilee year. Welcome to our new Area Commissioners and congratulations to our Hampshire AC now Mrs Jones (nee Sarah McBride) and Derby Staffs Joint AC Margaret Norris now Mrs Doyle. Embracing progress the society has now taken on a Public Relations Officer to help promote the BDS through the various social media channels and an introduction to Debra Hargrave is included in this issue. There is still much of the summer to come and wherever your driving interests lie I hope you are successful, enjoy yourselves and be safe.

Reports A DIAMOND DAY at
THE BDS ANNUAL SHOW
Bob Alexander
He’s won practically everything else – Harness Horse of the Year, Osborne Refrigerators BDS National Champion, so when judge Mary Ford gave Aghaderg Stand and Deliver the BDS Annual Show Supreme Championship title, his owner and driver Jessie Dudley-Apicella was rightly thrilled to have achieved this final accolade. Ten of the very best driving turnouts competed for the Supreme Championship – they came in all shapes and sizes having qualified through some strong and competitive classes. Jessie’s Father, Geoff Dudley made it a family affair having taken the Victoria Foods Welsh Championship with Stockdale Black Prince; he had earlier won the Section D category which surprisingly had only three entries. Nicola Salter and her Welsh Sec. B Brynlwyn Quick Flash had qualified for the Championship having taken the win in the Non-Hackney Type 13.2hh & Under, with the Over 13.2hh winner Maylands Magpie, driven by Liz Edmonds joining her in the line-up. Another Championship winner joined the mix, this time the Gail Crosier Novice Champion, James Howell with Darkside Defiance. It’s always interesting to see the novice horses and ponies at the show and then to watch them as their careers progress. Two pairs joined the single turnouts in the Championship. Kevin Hutchinson driving T. Cribb & Sons William and Earl had won the strong KBIS British Equestrian Insurance Multiples and Bob Alexander with Bullet and Bandit the World & Rare Breeds. The smallest contender was 10hh Greenhurst Daytime whose owner Lin Sayers had driven to top spot in the Alexander Mountain & Moorland class. Last but not least of the Championship contenders were the two Binder Ltd. Country Vehicle winners. Always a popular category the classes are split over and under 13.2hh. Rhian Ralph driving Mrs. Birch’s Penclose Wotsit won the ‘unders’ with Mark Fuller and Uwan taking the ‘overs’. Indeed Uwan went on to become Reserve Champion to Jessie Dudley-Apicella and by doing so took the precious Horse of the Year Show qualifier, Jessie having qualified at Royal Three Counties. Special thanks go to commentator Carey Knox following her welcome return to the UK after a brief sojourn in Lanzarote. She had to commentate on the Championship without any notes as the electricity supply to the office printer failed just at the wrong moment! For the very first time the show included an Exercise Vehicle Championship giving competitors the opportunity to go forward to the presentation by HM The Queen on the polo ground. The show recognised the popularity of the Balanced Horse Feeds Exercise classes HM The Queen with John Randall, Exercise which this year had 25 entries Vehicle Champion

and it was John Randall driving Luddington Whirl Wind who became the recipient of one of the yellow and black sashes. Equally strong in number was the Pleasure Driving class sponsored by Sue Smith. Fifteen competitors were entered in this increasing popular class which was one of those which contribute to the Carriage Driving Magazine Pleasure Driving Award. Looking forward to her forthcoming wedding, Alice Pritchard driving her Mother (Surrey Area Support Officer) Helen’s Littlehadley Kharma Chameleon, had an early celebration when judge Roger Page gave her the winners rosette. One of the show’s greatest supporters, Bob Alexander, had a busy time changing combinations of horses. Four abreast (described by Bob as a quadrum) entered the ring in the Multiples, he had a pair in the World & Rare Breeds and then a unicorn in the Truckbusters Concours d’elegance. Young artist Harry Blackwell took the task of judging the Concours d’elegance very seriously and with a keen artist’s eye. In what he reported as a close decision, he chose Jessie Boden driving her mother’s Tilly Trotter, as the one he would most like to paint. Indeed that is exactly what he is going to do and Jessie will be receiving a painting of her striking turnout. Harry so enjoyed his day at the show that he will be painting Aghaderg Stand & Deliver as well. Little did he know what he was letting himself in for when his Aunt, BDS Council Member Jo Halnan-Blackwell, volunteered him for the judging task! In 1967 as Mary James, Mary Ford won the famous Langdon Dowsett Trophy presented to the winner of the Thimbleby & Shorland Young Driver Championship. Fifty years later (she won’t thank us for that reminder!) Mary returned to judge the very same class. Split into two age sections 10-14 years and 15-17 years both classes were full of quality and it was particularly pleasing to see six young drivers Young Driver Champion, Leah Marshall in the younger category, a class that was cancelled due to no entries in 2016. Driving Sallie Walrond’s evergreen Murvey Dunhill in the 10-14 years age group, Auriel Pawsey took the win, but it was 17 year old Leah Marshall driving Stapleford March from the older Auriel Pawsey, accompanied by Sallie Walrond, driving Murvey section who went Dunhill

on to become Champion. HM The Queen’s grandaughter Lady Louise Windsor reversed the placings in the younger category and took the Reserve Championship proudly watched by her parents The Earl and Countess of Wessex and indeed, her grandfather HRH Prince Philip. Lady Louise was driving HM The Queen’s French Pony Chaise which she had driven in 1942 at the first Royal Windsor Horse Show to raise funds to buy a hurricane. And to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee BDS Vice-President, Sallie Walrond, a great supporter of the BDS Show, had generously donated a copy of her book ‘Trot On’ to every class winner, which went alongside the special goldtipped show rosettes. Alongside the display by the Carriage Foundation, visitors to the show were treated to the sight of a rather extraordinary vehicle – a Chinese Chariot c. 800 BC. The chariot had been reconstructed by Robert Hurford, Hon. Liveryman of Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights and featured in a recent online documentary. The Company had 30 guests at the show who cheered on their winner in the Vintage Vehicle class – Jack Harris with his team of horses put to a beautiful Mills Pony Coach. Another Livery Company to support the show with a large group of guests was the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers & Coach Harness Makers. Dick Carey was the recipient of their longstanding award and was brought into the arena by the ever-busy Bob Alexander to receive his trophy. Always popular, always striking and bringing back memories of how our forebears used to work were the Light Trade classes. The BDS Show is delighted that the light trade competitors support the show and so the classes are divided into three divisions – Two Wheel, Four Wheel and Costers. Lee Cross driving T. Cribb & Sons William and Earl to a London Van took the Fenix Carriages Four Wheel and Steve Watts driving Trixies Brenin-Gwalia the MC Hire Costers, but it was Tommy Fountain driving Bookham Lodge Logan to a Milk Float who took not only the Two Wheel prize but also the Supreme Championship. Reserve was Trixies Brenin-Gwalia, who was held in the ring after the presentation to receive the Worshipful Company of Farriers Best Shod award. And a first in recent memory, his farrier James Scammell, was actually with him to personally receive the plaque and applause from the knowledgeable crowd who know only too well ‘No foot no horse’.

One of the most lovely trophies in the show’s care is the Surtees Challenge Trophy, presented by Frank and Jane Warrender. Proving that some driving horses are also riding animals, the trophy is presented to the winner of the Ride & Drive and this year went to the ever youthful Tessa Reeve with Sealmaster’s Marches Merry Nathan. Throughout the day in the Tom Coombs Ring show wagon enthusiasts were treated to some exciting classes. The Brightside Welsh Cobs Wagon Championship itself may not have appeared Sam Matthews with Bennetts Castle Thomas to be hotly contested as some of the drivers had had to make the difficult decision to not compete when they had qualified for other classes. This does not lessen the achievement of Sam Matthews with Bennetts Castle Thomas who became champion having come through a very strong Welsh Sec. D class. And for the Hackneys, an entry of thirty-three horses and ponies had featured in the four hackney classes with the championship going to prolific winner Joey Peters and Wentworth Ebony.
Grayswood Carriages Veteran winner, Sandra Priestley’s 19 year old Radnor Mango
Last but not least were the ‘long ears’ and the ‘short legs’! To some they may be niche classes but the show welcomes the donkeys and miniatures and their increasing number of supporters. Sue Nebbeling had joined the list of sponsors keen to promote the miniatures, and her enthusiasm was rewarded with a class of six entries (so much better than in 2016 when no entries resulted in a cancelled class). She donated a lovely trophy which became the property of Alice Brownings driving her tiny dun Shetland, Magreed Charlie Boy. And centre stage (seen and most definitely heard!) in the Sanders Watney Arena were the donkeys. BDS Chairman Angela Sixsmith has a soft spot for them and was delighted to sponsor the class and present the winner’s rosette to Jill Oliver and Mixandmatch. The 53rd BDS Annual Show in this the British Driving Society’s Diamond Jubilee year proved once again that driving can come together and provide enjoyment for not only those taking part but also those around the ring edge. Entry numbers beat the trend and were on a par with the high number achieved a year ago. Our grateful thanks must go to all those who supported the show, whether as spectator, sponsor, official or participant. Without you all it could not happen; but special mention must go to all those volunteers who work so hard on the day. Sadly no picture exists of the BDS Chairman, Finance Chairman, Welsh Branch Chairman, Judges Committee Member and their team litter picking after everyone went home, but it and the show will remain in our memories. Congratulations to one and all!

A New Member of the British Driving Society Team Recognising the demands of the modern era in which we now live, the BDS has appointed Debra Hargrave as its new Public Relations Officer. Debra has over 17 years experience as a freelance consultant across equestrian PR, communications and marketing. Her specialist knowledge is in social media and whilst the appointment is only part-time she has already increased the social media profile of the BDS. Something that she wants to develop and build on. To that effect the BDS is now on both Twitter @britshdrivingsc and Instagram @britishdrivingsociety as well as Facebook @britishdrivingsociety. Welcoming Debra to the team, Chairman Angela Sixsmith said “We are delighted to have Debra on board. We have a lot to learn and she is going to have quite a job teaching us how to best use social media. However, I must take this opportunity to thank Linda Swain for her previous work on the Publicity Committee. We have had to recognise the need for a dedicated PRO and I hope that this appointment will reduce Linda’s considerable workload and give her time to concentrate on everything else she does for the Society.” The role of a PRO is to promote the BDS to both members and those outside the Society. Also to provide information about what is going on. There are many ways of achieving this, and to start Debra will concentrate on social media. She believes that the importance of photography and video cannot be overestimated. In June videos posted achieved an increase in views of over 25,000%! Debra will welcome photographs and videos from ACs and other BDS officials. Footage from mobile phones is fine but remember it must be OK to be placed in the public domain. She is keen to promote every aspect of what the BDS does, not just showing. “I did not realise quite the extent of all the activities that drivers and their horses get involved in” she said “and I am really looking forward to working with the Society”.

Pleasure Driving I was lucky enough to be the “Grand Prize” winner of the Carriage Driving Magazine Pleasure Driving Award. This is run by the magazine for BDS members who compete in Pleasure Driving Classes at BDS shows. It costs nothing more to enter, you just need to have your Award entry form signed by either the show judge or the show secretary each time you compete. You only need three classes to be signed off. Everyone who completes the three classes receives a certificate and this year we received a beautiful silver salver engraved with the Carriage Driving logo. You are then entered into the Grand Prize draw. I was presented with my prize at the fabulous BDS Kent show by Stephanie Kill editor of Carriage Driving Magazine and Michelle Kenny from Zilco and what a prize! Some books, a year subscription to the magazine and a Zilco Tedman harness! To say I was overwhelmed was an understatement and am still completely shocked at being the winner. Lunch at the show was

also included and extremely good it was too! I have looked at the beautiful new harness clean and tidy in its carry-bag for the past few weeks and at last had a little “try-on”! It is soft, comfortable and easy-care, so great for us both! I would like to thank the BDS for this competition and encourage all of my fellow Pleasure Driving competitors to print your form from the BDS Website and pack it in your show supplies. You’re going anyway, so just get it signed, what have you got to lose? The next Grand Prize winner could be you! Good luck everyone.

Our first drive of the season was on April 2nd at Halvana Plantation. We all managed to park in a very quiet slip road. Eight turnouts were able to join us and the weather was heavenly. We started out on quiet country roads and then went into Forestry Commission land. The only additional hazards were two inquisitive and athletic horses in the field not far from the start. After a dynamic risk assessment we decided the horses in the field would behave if our members walked past their field rather than trotted. Everyone was advised

BDS Training Day Derbyshire and Staffordshire BDS Members were kindly invited to a Training Day at Redhouse Stables on Sunday 2nd April hosted by Caroline Dale-Leech MBE. This was a great opportunity for newer or less experienced members to come along and have their turnouts checked over by a very experienced eye , it also gave both members and non-members the opportunity to listen and learn. Firstly Caroline put her own pair of Grey Gelderlanders to, discussing best practise as she went with different harness options for several disciplines. Lyndsey Cartwright then bought out Jonty her handsome Dartmoor and as Lyndsey harnessed up the audience were invited to comment and suggest improvements or ask questions. Lyndsey and Jonty took all this in good grace and left feeling much more confident about the turnout going forward. Special mention to her groom for the day Sam Jones who proves a good competent and calm groom is priceless!

Maurice Arden then pulled out his lovely home bred Shetland Sterling, Maurice has ambition to start showing in driving classes this season and so his turnout was discussed with this in mind. Sterling was a star and behaved beautifully. Finally Brenda Furness brought out her Fell Pony and harnessed up to go long reining. Over thirty people enjoyed the session, even the diehard whips learnt something! Thank you to Caroline and the Redhouse Team for their hospitality and enthusiasm, a lovely way to spend a Spring morning in the sunshine
Margaret, Sharon, Sally-Anne and Marie then showed how versatile their horses are by then riding the course.
Hazelwood Road Drive The new Hazelwood Drive was a great success after all the rain we’d had the week before. Eight turnouts were guided around the beautiful scenery of Hazelwood and Shottle by front car Eliza and friends with Mr and Mrs Stubbs bringing up the rear for an eight mile drive. The half way stop and refreshments was at Dannah Farm, Shottle with many thanks to Mr and Mrs Slack for the use of their field. Everyone returned to the village for a lovely high tea kindly provided by Rita, Jason and family. Thanks also to Samantha Jones who joined the drive to inspect Sue Robinsons’ Tandem turnout working towards their Tandem Bars
Area Show Sunday Christine Bassett and Carolyn Bryers and their Team put on a well organised Area Show on Sunday 4th June at Cutler Park, Mercaston, Derbyshire

Sunday 21st May 2017 We were invited to Lower Larkworthy Farm, Ashwater, the home of Jenny Moore and Ian Ellacott where a record fourteen members booked places. The route planned by Jenny took us along a green lane lined with a host of bluebells in the woods. We drove through the village of Ashwater and along country lanes ending with a chance to tire the horses by driving around three fields before getting back to Lower Larkworthy, where whips could try their hand at a clear round cone course in the ménage. When all the horses were washed down and put away everyone tucked into a barbecue arranged by Jenny Moore and Iris Fry with Angie, Sally and Maggy giving a helping hand. Area News forgetting a lively Hampshire v Dorset Quiz Night (we won!). Then our outdoor season kicked off with a well-attended drive through Wareham Forest in March and since then we’ve enjoyed a workshop on harness fitting, a Fun Day and our best Area Show ever. As I write we look forward to a full summer of events, the ever-popular Interval Drive and Hog Roast from Highsteppers in Pallington and a commemorative BDS Diamond Jubilee Drive and Tea by kind invitation of Lord Shaftesbury in July, then a BDS Trec from Dogdean Farm in August and an Interval Drive from Holtwood Stables in September. We round off the outdoor season in October with the much-loved Treasure Hunt from Chilbridge Farm. Find details for all these events below, and I look forward to seeing many of you there... Happy driving!

Past Events 16th February An interesting talk by Farrier Andy Brown followed by a lively question-and-answer session addressing issues such as remedial shoeing and the pros and cons of not shoeing at all. (See separate article) 5th March – Quiz Night We had a lovely evening at the combined Hampshire – Dorset Quiz Evening. There were eight teams in all and Dorset was well supported with three teams. The questions were really good, difficult enough to make us think. Lots of laughter was heard from all the teams. After winning, Dorset are to host the next Quiz. Hampshire did such a good job that Dorset have a high standard to live up to. 19th March – Wareham Forest Drive Wareham Forest was our first drive of the season and in spite of a chilly and overcast Sunday, eight turnouts enjoyed a good day out, with members coming from Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. The routes were approximately between ten or six miles though forestry and open country with distant views across the forest. All gates on the route had been opened making the drive flow smoothly. Amongst the participants there were a team of Shetlands, pair of Dartmoors plus singles of different shapes and sizes all of which enjoyed themselves and arrived back safely. A big thank you to Yvette and Hazel for their time and effort planning and marking the course and all who helped on the day. 23rd March – Talk on equine nutrition Lorna Edgar and Jo Revell from Bailey’s Feeds gave us a fascinating insight into the way the horse’s ‘insides’ work and certainly made us think hard about what level and type of feed is best for each individual animal. All in all, a most interesting evening, which was rounded off by one-to-one Qs and As with Lorna and Jo and a distribution of lovely Raffle prizes. (See article)

11th April – Talk on equine dentistry Members arriving for this talk by dentist Clare Vincent were greeted by the sight of two equine skulls, one large and one ponysized, which Clare used to illustrate some of the points she was making about equine dentistry. A very interesting and instructive evening. (See article) 30th April – Harness and carriage fitting We all met in the barn at Nutley Farm for the harness clinic given by Tony Munt and Sue Wiles. Various horses and a pony, with many different sets of harness, were used to show a very interested audience the correct way to fit and harness a carriage horse. The use of different bits was explained in great detail, with much discussion all round. This was followed by a practice session for those who had never done it before, with all the intricate details explained. Putting to was followed by a break for tea, coffee and cake. The barn was ideal, as we chose the only day for at least a month when it decided to rain! Our thanks for a very interesting and informative day to Tony and Sue, and to Ann Roots for providing the venue and facilities. 14th May: Fun Day A record fourteen turnouts came along to our Fun Day, held once again at the kind invitation of the East Holton Carriage Driving Centre for the Disabled at Holton Lee. The drive took us along a well-marked route through fields and woodland with glimpses of the sea beyond. And everyone could ‘have a go’ at the fun cones course set up by Ann and Terry James, with the eventual fastest time being achieved by Charlotte Bull. Many thanks to the staff at Holton Lee and all the helpers who made this such a good day.

Once again Ashfields Carriage Driving Centre did us proud. The weather couldn’t have been better and we had some good entries for our Area Summer Show on 11th June. Mrs. Michele Peters very kindly came all the way from Carmarthen to judge for us (and what a lovely lady she is) and to complete our International Judges our Concours d’elegance Judge came from Australia! We had the good fortune this year to have extra help from Paul Mills (commentating) Chris Eveleigh (marshalling) Viv Weston (entries) Andrew Durrell (photography) and Tracey Dowell (sponsorship) thanks gang we couldn’t have done it without you! A big thank you goes also to our sponsors and the owners and staff at Ashfields, especially for the buffet lunch. Although Hackneys were a little thin on the ground due to our clashing with the Hackney Breed Show at Ardingley our overall Champion was Josie Randall with her beautiful Hackney pony, Heartland Starlighter, closely followed by Reserve, Stevie Watts with the equally beautiful, Trixies Brenin Gwalia. Our next event is the Autumn Show at Beeches Road, Battlesbridge, hope to see you there.

Well, Spring has arrived and on March 22 we kicked off our season with a drive to the High Corner Inn in the middle of the New Forest. Despite the somewhat inclement weather, seven turnouts (three of which were pairs) turned up with another thirty people on foot. Organised by Georgina Burrows, it was a good opportunity to catch up on the news and to enjoy an excellent meal with old friends.

The Monnington Drive was run later this year and benefitted from the weather being spring like and the ground being somewhat less muddy than the last few years. The summer season is truly upon us and it has been a delight to see so many members out enjoying their horses. With the light evenings and warmer weather, after work drives and get togethers are possible alongside the weekend activities and I love to see how versatile your driving partners are! One photo shows them turned out beautifully, strutting their stuff in a show ring, another competing around cones or obstacles and then relaxing with the family offering rides to the grandchildren, just lovely. Please send your favourites to us as they can be put on the Facebook or the Web page for all to enjoy. Please remember how easily we can blend in under the trees during the evenings and the importance of some Hi Viz clothing or a sign on your vehicle. There is a lot of campaigning currently on social media raising awareness of how to pass horses on the road with some awful accidents or near misses discussed. In carriages we have less opportunities to drive off the road as there are so few byways so I always strive to be visible, be polite and thanks to my head cam proactive in reporting anyone who may need some education on vulnerable road users. The British Horse Society also have an reporting form on their website that allows you to register a wide range of horse related incidents including road safety and surfaces. www.bhs.org.uk
Despite quiet Hackney and Trade Classes, entries were up on last year and we received lots of compliments but I am sure we can improve so if you have an idea or suggestion, please let us know.

We had another really good BDS rally which for the most was in lovely sunshine, although we did have a little rain at the Pimms halfway stop and towards the end of the event. Eight turnouts went on the 8 miles route and we even had two newby`s with us, Jed and Smurf who did very well on their first rally. We all celebrated Jeds first rally with champagne brought by Sioux Gardner. The event was a memorial rally held at the change of venue Springbridge in memory of Susan Wynne who passed away recently. Susan was due to hold this rally at her home in Sutton Cheney. Thank you to Freda Martin for organising the event and organising the food

avoid all contact with the pigs. The fields were stunning with the barley floating in the breeze and the trees bursting with early summer green. Saturday evening was so warm we headed off to Hunstanton and had supper by the green looking out to sea. After our cooked breakfast on Sunday we ventured out again. The flint cottages and their pretty gardens coupled with virtually no traffic on the back lanes made for a very enjoyable drive.

Lincolnshire Area members have recently enjoyed a rally drive on one of the BHS Plap routes setting off from Newton. We had to park our transport on the road side where there were very wide verges but we were lucky to have one kind husband offer to stay on guard whilst the rest of us set off in lovely weather to enjoy the quiet lanes and tracks of Lincolnshire. Prior to setting off we had eaten our picnics while one of our members volunteered to carry out safety checks and tick off the list of safety items we had devised for our safety points league (the more Hi Viz the better!) The route was 8.5 miles and most of the participants had their Rally miles card for signing. We did get a bit lost despite having lovely maps laminated for us by Gill but it all added to the fun as we soon found another turning which brought us back to the correct route although it was a bit bumpy. On May 8th a few members gathered at a pre arranged venue to undertake training led by Claire Bourne LHHI and then to be tested in our knowledge of transporting horses and their welfare whilst being carried. We were joined by one non member and had assistance offered by another member who had already taken the test. All three trainees were successful and we now have our certificates to display. May 21st was such a busy day in Lincolnshire that we decided to cancel the rally we had planned at Careby and let members attend Woodhall Spa show where a demonstration was given by members organised by Jayne Hayes AAC. The weekend of the 3rd to 5th June we planned to drive the different routes and tracks at Abbey

We were a little depleted in numbers due to other driving activities happening up and down the County. On Saturday our one turnout took advantage of the beautiful off-road tracks and managed to

Oxford member Mary Baker on Claire Lilley master class
Our third Training Day which was held at Breach Lane with twenty members and non members attending to listen, watch and participate with Claire Lilley the well known Trainer and Author from Melksham. The session was entitled lunging, long-reining and in-hand work master class. We had six members’ ponies and horses taking part ranging from a ride and drive Friesian to a driven Shetland. Claire worked two horses in the indoor school at a time having divided the morning into three sections, slightly adapting so the owners would get the most out of their ‘hands on training’ and to suit the equine being trained. It was a really interesting morning and it was rewarding to know that the majority took home some new ideas. The weather actually allowed us two drives during the Spring, sadly not well supported, but enjoyed by those who took part. Due to lack of interest we were also forced to cancel our General Meeting planned for the beginning of April, just one person responded!

The first two Area Shows are now done and dusted both held in wonderful surroundings. The first being the Cotswold Area Show held on the Badminton Estate at Worcester Lodge. Sadly overall a smaller entry, but five Traditional Carriages in the Private Driving with Joe Rowe the BDS Smith’s Lawn Champion taking the overall Championship. The Spring Area Show held at Warneford Place nr Swindon had more entries with several Novices and it was lovely that a Novice turnout, Emma Pitman with Ruby, who had a go at several classes overall had the most points to receive our very handsome Jubilee Trophy. Those who took part in the drive had a nice surprise as at the half way point we called at Fresden Manor where we were greeted with a goblet of Champagne and a carrot for the horses and ponies. How very kind everyone is.

We held a drive on the Ridgeway on the 11th June starting from a point on the Lockinge Estate. The weather was really kind and four turnouts enjoyed a lovely drive of around ten miles with a stop at the pub in West Ilsley. It was good to see different faces, new area member Louise Anderson with her lovely coloured cob and Grant Kendal from Northampton Area 31, with his cob which sported a moustache. James Scott Lee and his wife Gill, Joan Smith and me were the other two turnouts. It was also good to have support from Berkshire member Hilary Davies who brought her friend to see us set off and meet us at the pub. After the drive we gathered to have a picnic and a chat. Thanks to those who came along, hopefully we can do it again soon. The next planned event is the Show and Fun Day on 13th August with details to be posted shortly. I have been waiting for offers of drives and any that come up will be posted. Some are shying away from registering drives as a BDS event because of the forms and Risk assessment that need to be submitted. All I can say is let me know the details if you want other members to be involved and I will submit the necessary forms, it’s not something to worry about. I know a few of you would like some training days, this has been worked on and with some help hopefully we can get something organised, probably towards the autumn as everyone seems so busy already this Summer. Please if anyone has any ideas of things they would like to do please get in touch, it’s your area and your input would be really welcome. Safe driving and I hope to see some of you soon and hear any ideas you might have.

Sue Cole reports on the regular Easter event A cold and wet Easter Monday saw six decorated turnouts leaving The Raven for a pleasant drive into Whitchurch where two small ponies who had been saving their legs also joined the party. After final adjustments to turnouts and bonnets we paraded in front of Tesco where staff kindly welcomed us with wine and fruit juice as well as Easter eggs for the eventual prize winners. All the horses and ponies enjoyed the attention of members of the public before the final judging which was ably carried out by the Mayor of Whitchurch Councillor Mike McDonald. Everyone received a commemorative rosette and horse brass before the Mayor made his final choice of prize winners. Large Easter eggs were awarded to Georgina Lusby, with Jennifer Marren, Helen James and Corky for the best decorated children’s bonnet and Sue Cole with Frank Bullock and Sam the Man for the best decorated adult’s bonnet. The best overall carriage award and cup was well deserved by Jim Rodgers and Lily-Ann Rodgers with Elsa for their ingenious nest with a hatching chick emerging from her egg! They were accompanied by Sarah and James Rodgers with their grey pony Splodge, a real family outing. Also parading were Wendy Green with Twiglet, Felicity Stubbs and Avril Pluck with Amber, David Brown and Dawn Burns and June Bottomley, with their piebald horse Paddy and last but by no means least Georgina Venables and Tyler Shelton with their little chestnut pony Elliott. Many thanks go to Dot Moreland for organising the day and to Chris, Brenda, Philip, Sue, Ursula for cars and stewarding. AAC Lizzie Lawrence once again organized the horse blessing and drive at Aston Hall near Oswestry by kind premising of the Griffiths family. In spite of much better weather this year the event was not well attended. Ted Orgil put on a new drive near Sheriff Hales on the first of May. The fifteen mile drive included a pub stop half way round. Tony Gregory led with his tandem but everyone was issued with directions so that they could move off in their own time. Once again we had the opportunity to promote driving at the Shropshire Show with a static display and an invitation to lead the grand parade. Unfortunately once again there was little enthusiasm for this event among

members. Fortunately Russell Hand saved the day with his fiberglass horse attached this year to a Mortuary Cart! Russell also led the parade with a Brougham and pair joined by Felicity Stubbs with her gig. In spite of the fact that John Hendy has given up driving it was good that he brought his private omnibus for the static display. John, I think I am right in saying has been driving for more years than any other member in the county. He has always been passionate about original traditional carriages which he always drove but sadly has recently sold his horses. The sight of his smart Gelderlanders at our most prestigious drives will be missed. Sadly the National Trust is no longer prepared to host the Carriage Parade in September. We hope to arrange a Diamond Jubilee drive in its place and we will announce more details as soon as they are available

East Hoathly Drive
Sunday, 6th February A drizzly day greeted the eight turnouts for the East Hoathly Drive. Members from Kent and Surrey were made welcome. Three riders accompanied the carriages and there was a broad spectrum of horse breeds represented from a miniature horse and Shetland through to other native pony breeds up to Clydesdale crosses. There were three routes available ranging from four, seven and ten miles and participants were given detailed maps and directions. Some members set off in small groups and others went on their own. Everyone arrived back safely and all arrived back at more or less the same time despite the difference in drive mileage. Everyone had a safe and thoroughly enjoyable drive.

Members came from Kent and Sussex and they could either attend with their show turnout for a one on one 30 minute critique and to get advice on any problems they may be experiencing or they could come as a spectator and just look and learn. There was a good mix of turnouts ranging from single, pairs and tandem. Gary Docking’s delightful anecdotal and humorous style ensured that all those in attendance gained from his wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience.

This drive was previously arranged to go from Framfield but as the ground was too wet it was deemed unsuitable for parking and therefore it was rearranged to the popular Havenswold venue.

There were only five turnouts for this drive accompanied by two riders. This was probably due to the weather forecasters forecasting torrential rain for the whole of the day. However, it was dry all day so all had a good drive. The byways were firm underfoot despite some earlier rain in the week and the drivers were able to safely canter their horses through Abbots Wood. Everyone arrived back to some hot refreshments provided by Dick and Mary.

London Harness Horse Parade Monday 17th April 2017
Several of our members attended the LHHP at Ardingly. The warm sunny weather encouraged many entrants and there was a fantastic display of well over one hundred turnouts, which crossed the spectrum of horse driving. All our members were awarded First prize. Very well done.
The drive was extremely well organised with participants not only being supplied with a map and directions but also arrows had been painted on the route to mark the way. There were two routes of 6.5 miles and 10 miles. The lanes were very quiet with hardly any other road users. The Kent scenery was stunning with the route passing through woodland, farmland and quiet sleepy hamlets. The aroma of bluebells that wafted through the wooded lanes as we trotted along added to the tranquillity. We were all invited to partake of homemade cakes and tea on our return. Thank you Shepway Harness Club and Teresa Whitehead for looking after us and making this a memorable drive.

Framfield Drive
Sunday 14th May 2017 This was going to include some off-road tracks but as there had been a lot of rain the previous week the off road route around New Place was not chosen by any of our members. Instead the four turnouts who attended all decided to keep to the country lanes. It was warm and sunny and the picturesque route wound its way through farmland and through hamlets with outstanding views of the Sussex countryside. There was even a spectacular watermill en route where you could look down some 20 feet into the water below. The drive was not without its exciting moments as three enormous tractors were encountered. However all the horses were very well behaved and passed them without incident.

East Sussex Annual BDS Show, Stuckley Farm, Chiddingly We were blessed once again with a warm sunny day for our area show, which is now in its third year. This is a wonderful venue as Helen Bridges and her husband Pete work tirelessly to ensure that the ground is mowed and fairly flat. Our thanks have to go to all those that help organise this lovely event and especially to our lady judge Jean Clayden and show Steward Louise Woodward.

The drive will start by going through the grounds of Firle Place then pass through the quiet and picturesque village of Firle. The route, will then take the byway to Berwick. This byway is the remains of the original turn pike road which ran between Eastbourne and Brighton but was closed in 1812 and runs along the foot of the South Downs taking in some spectacular views and passing the original coaching inn. At Berwick the carriages can turn round before returning back to the coaching inn and taking a country route back to Firle Place. On return to Firle Place there will be a Sunday Best parade in front of the house to meet visitors to the house and where rosettes will be presented by Lady Gage to commemorate the event. Please note that Berkshire BDS have had to move the Windsor Drive to Sunday 1st October. This is because a half marathon is going to take place on 24th September, which was the original date.
27th August Still to be confirmed. “Sunday Best” Sheffield Park/Fletching village drive. Please check out our website for the latest on this event. Please note that if we are not able to access Sheffield Park we will organise a substitute drive so there will be an event taking place on this day.

Area News Sussex West AC Colin Hurd Tel: 01243 776809 Mob: 07973 682861 (eves only) Email: c_hurd@sky.com West Sussex is happy to report that the Spring of 2017 has seen some successful and encouraging events for carriage driving. On the 25 of March, Hartland carriages allowed us to visit their premises and gave a thorough and absorbing talk on maintaining and generally caring for our carriages, new and traditional. Michael Hartland gave us very welcome tips and practical demonstrations of maintenance that we could undertake ourselves and also how they at Hartland strip down bearings and other problems that we may encounter with our carriages. We were treated to a tour of their collection of carriages and a question and answer session was a great success. We were provided with tea and coffee later, plus tasty homemade cake. Many thanks go to Caroline Court for organising and liaising with Hartlands and also for making the delicious cakes. A big thank you to Michael and Joanne Hartland for the considerable time and effort they put in to make this day the success it undoubtedly was. th
April produced two competitions for BDS members. On the 16th we held our annual BDS Trec at Mr Jeff Osborne’s superb yard and grounds, the weather was very kind to us and as we had had an unseasonal warm spell beforehand we were treated to the full glory of holding the drive through the woods which were a sea of bluebells. Eight turnouts enjoyed this fun day, the presentation was followed by the off road drive and then six skills which were designed not only for the whip, but also to engage the groom, so making it a team effort. Our judge this year was Jane Brightwell who was impressed by the skill shown by our competitors. Winner of the Trec was Gina Jeffries, 2nd Carly Smart 3rd Roger Page 4th Ian Bazely, 5th.Ginny Parker and 6th Helen Annema. The following week it was back to Mr Osborne’s for the West Sussex BDS show. We are deeply indebted to Jeff Osborne for his continuing support to this BDS area. As it is the Diamond Jubilee year for the BDS this year we had some super rosettes to give to all our competitors to celebrate this in addition to their class rosettes. We are pleased to report that entries were excellent this year with our non- traditional vehicle class and exercise class attracting nine and twelve entries and we were treated to a tandem entry from Antonia Gallop, which was a joy to watch. The private driving class brought forward six quality turnouts, again the weather was kind to us. The Championship went to Charlie Bailey with Tom, and the Reserve Champion was Ginny Parker with Wyedean Cornish Lad, Ginny had won three classes throughout the day and gained her Osborne qualifier.

Show Champion, Charlie Bailey
Our judge for the day was Araminta Winn, who we would like to thank for her sterling work. If any of our West Sussex members would like a Diamond Jubilee Rosette they are available and we know that not everybody can attend and compete in our events. Please contact us and we will try and get one to you. We are wondering if a social get together would be attractive to our members to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee year, if you are interested please get in touch, any future events will be listed on the BDS website. Finally, without our members support we would be unable to run these types of events, so a big thank you to all those who are up at the crack of dawn, sploshing horse shampoo around and spending a week polishing harness. Also our thanks go to those who spectate and generally pitch up and get stuck in.

“Happy Valley” Rally Drive at Norland Moor, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire on Easter Sunday 16 April 2017
Four turnouts completed circular routes around Norland Moor, enjoying spectacular views (as seen in the recent BBC TV series “Happy Valley”) albeit in slightly cool, blustery conditions but we had a warm welcome from Ladstone House Livery Yard managers Andy and Kath Agnew. Paula Kay with her Exmoor, Ariel and Steven and Nicky Williams with Kuy completed a fairly testing 7.5 miles, including the steep climb up to Barkisland village from the Mill. Linda Jones with her lovely Hackney x Welsh mare Lily and me (AC Leah Swindlehurst) with my novice pair of Welsh Section A geldings Mac and Chop-suey, took the easier route of 4.5 miles, both these turnouts having their debut in company with no difficulties. After a sociable picnic lunch (indoors due to the weather having taken a turn for the worse!), there was then a chance for cones practice in the indoor school. Rally Rosettes were awarded to all and Rally Miles for those who are working towards an award.

Ann Poole As I begin my tenure as AC for the Dorset and South Wilts Area, I reflect on the pleasure that many years of involvement with horses has given me and look forward to the opportunity of sharing the enthusiasm for driving that has been part of my world since childhood on the family farm, where my father kept heavy horses and a pony and trap. I have been in farming all of my life (I’m a farmer’s daughter and a farmer’s wife!) and have always had horses around me. I’ve run a couple of livery yards, kept a small herd of New Forest ponies and been involved with breeding stock. I’ve maintained a strong interest in the ridden horse and currently own and drive a Welsh Cob who has reached Medium level dressage and a 17.3hh Hanoverian working to PSG. However my first love has always been driving and I have been a BDS member for forty one years, enjoying Area activities as well as showing in Private Driving classes. The Dorset and South Wilts Area has much to offer and with the loyal support of our Steering Group, I look forward to developing our programme of events to cater for all of the membership, whilst always upholding the standards and principles of the British Driving Society.
be the first time for horse drawn carriages to be represented at the event, we are hoping for lots of interest. In October we have our Autumn Study Day at the Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum in Maidstone. Our speakers are Kevin Stillwell, whip maker, and Robert Hurford, wheelwright. It promises to be a good day with a tour of the collection and lunch included in the £35 fee. There are a few spaces left for this event, do be in touch to book your place. I was very involved with both Riding for the Disabled then Carriage Driving for the RDA. I am still an Assessor for the RDA and thoroughly enjoy my visits to Groups.

Chairman's Report Naturally I am biased but I think we are very lucky in Wales to have such a varied landscape which thankfully lends itself to carriage driving. Recent events included beautiful beach drives, cosy camping and driving out, super shows, picturesque rally drives and some excellent socialising. New AC for Bridgend and Cardiff area (Mid South Wales) has cracked open the risk assessment book and started out with a lovely drive from Cowbridge, courtesy of supporting AAC Rachel Royle. Currently Joanne is making her way around the district to find out what members would like to happen in their area. Please support her in this massive effort. It’s a very sad farewell to long standing AC for Mid East Wales, Ann Ham. Ann has been a fantastically keen and able AC for the area and a great supporter of the BDS Wales Committee, we will be very sad to lose her from these roles but take great comfort that the move will better suit the family and that we are still keeping them within Wales. If any member in that area is interested in perhaps taking on the role of AC, please contact me for details on how it works and the commitment level that it entails. There is of course a great AAC currently in post to support and the BDS Wales Committee stands ready to help any taker. Ann is in post
until August so a new AC could shadow until that time. Please contact me on 07966515325 michellepeters2912@gmail.com for further information. New for 2017 is the launch of the BDS Wales Points and Performance Scheme which has been put together to celebrate the input and support that all BDS Wales members give. Currently you can enter in three categories; as a whip, groom or supporter. The first two are self-explanatory, the third to clarify is for anyone who volunteers at one of the BDS events either by stewarding, making the tea or organising it. There are three levels of achievement within each category; gold, silver and bronze which are attained by gathering points. The points are awarded by going to BDS events. There are a full list of conditions (not many) and how to apply which is published on the BDS Wales website under Points and Performance Scheme. Each member will then be presented with their commemorative award at the BDS Wales AGM on November 19th. The BDS Wales Show has also launched a new championship to celebrate Welsh BDS members that show Private Driving turnouts and Exercise Vehicle turnouts. The Derek Whiting National Championships have created four new championship titles which will be contested at the BDS Wales Show on August 13th. Qualifiers can be won at local Welsh BDS shows and Welsh agricultural shows. The full list is displayed on the BDS Wales website under BDS Wales Show. There are two categories, Private Driving and Exercise Vehicle which is further split into National Champion and National Champion resident in Wales. It should be a really exciting championship series and I for one cannot wait to see who comes forward to contest the titles.
The BDS Wales Trec Championships are being hosted by Pat Dutson and the S.E Wales area on September 19th. All details are being handled by Pat so please contact her if you have any questions relating to the Championships. Looking to the end of year, the BDS Wales AGM is looming and this year the date is November 19th to start at 1pm. Each successive year the committee meeting seems to run into the AGM, so to enable the meeting to finish in a timely manner especially since we only meet three times a year and therefore have lots to discuss, we will start the AGM later than previous years. As per previous years we will host a buffet for members attending. All documentation pertaining to the AGM will be posted on the BDS Wales website except the finances which will be presented at the AGM. If any BDS Wales member should want copies of these documents sent to them, please contact our Secretary Anthea. If anyone would like to put forward a proposal to the AGM, please present this is in writing (email or postal) to the BDS Wales Secretary before October 29th 2017. Proposals received after this date will not be considered. Please note all proposals have to be given by a current BDS Wales member and seconded by a different BDS Wales member. All proposals will be voted on by a quorate membership at the AGM. All proposals will be published on the BDS Wales website after the deadline for receiving them has passed. I was very pleasantly surprised to see a BDS Wales member recently up at Stafford County Show and hope that everyone is also out and about enjoying their turnouts in the on off glorious weather we have been experiencing.
Happy driving!

With our show on July 2nd getting a lot of interest I’m hoping to have a great set of photographs for the next newsletter and would like to thank our generous sponsors and all the supporters who helped on the day, setting up as well as the two sympathetic judges and of course our competitors! I will have pictures of a Friesian stallion driven to a traditional Dutch carriage which featured as our lunchtime display, HUGE thanks to Fraithwen Friesians for this! The area organised an evening talk at Llandovery which was open to all BDS members and there was a great turnout! In fact my apologies for it being rather “cosy” in the room we were overwhelmed by the extra

WANTED!! YOUR AREA NEEDS YOU!! My main message for this newsletter is the renewed SOS for someone to take up my post of Area Commissioner in mid August. I am very happy to assist and ease you in but cannot continue as AC in the long term. There is great support from experienced AAC Anthea Birch and other AACs can be appointed to help share the organising side of the job. It is very rewarding ...honestly!!! If you could consider the role, PLEASE contact Michelle Peters BDS Wales chairlady for details of how to apply.

We are half way through the year already and are all enjoying the good weather. Our first event of the year was in January when we held a training day at Bryn Derw indoor school near Llanberis. This covered long reigning and cones driving, it was a good day for some of our junior members that had a go at driving Neil Buffery’s pair of mini Shetlands. In February we held a road driving training day, which was kindly sponsored by In harness magazine. It was held indoors so we

Area News Our local show in Bethesda had to be cancelled due to very wet and windy conditions, such a shame after all the hard work that goes into running these events. We decided to have a change from our normal drive in Newborough and have a treasure hunt in June. The forestry have information boards in different locations with facts about the forest, so all drivers and the grooms were given maps and clues to find on route and also to collect things on the way. The winners were Sharne, Dianne and Maisie Bellis with Jaffa. Runners up were Pat and Tony with Wally; Neil and Sally with Miggy; Sue and Kora with Molly; Sophie, Mick and Morfydd with Jac and Morgan. We all had a great day and enjoyed a picnic at the end.

On the 16th April we had a lovely flat drive around Nash in Newport, which was a great start for all our not too fit ponies. With six turnouts and nice weather we had a really good day. The 13th May saw us all assemble at Park farm for a drive around the country lanes. Two nice routes one of five and one of ten miles, with good weather and great company.

With numbers up on last year it provided some great competition with seven turnouts contending some classes. The quality and obvious pride in turn outs was lovely to see. The large ring and completely self- contained show field proved a perfect setting for some novice horses and ponies on their first outing in the show ring. All behaved very well and will be the ones to watch in the future.

The annual Area 38 Show at Pennard, Swansea started a bit damp and gloomy but thankfully competitors still turned up and were repaid with lovely weather and a very encouraging Judge in Sarah Wildy who stepped in at short notice.

One such youngster Maesmynach Rhapsody managed to reduce its Whip and Groom to tears by not only behaving impeccably all day but also scooping the Grass Roots Championship, well done Avis and Janet Purnell. Organising a show is a lot of work but seeing so many smiling faces does make it all worthwhile.
I must thank Swansea branch of the Pony Club for allowing us to use their lovely field and facilities and also for providing the catering with freshly made rolls and I must say they make a lovely cup of tea. I am constantly looking for ways to make the show more appealing and next year I hope a class including a show drive to the beautiful coast will be well supported.

Pendine Beach Drive Well what can I say! Pouring rain and high winds through the night caused many people to cancel their entries but a few brave souls turned up to drive. High winds coming off the sea and torrential rain caused a heavy mist, but waterproofs on and off they went. They all returned in high spirits despite being wet through to their undergarments!! Reports Dogcarts also carried dogs like whippets and greyhounds to the meet for the sport of coursing, chasing hares and other animals. They did not want the dogs to be tired before the sporting event so carrying them securely on the carriage made sense.
This is a very appealing carriage with a special compartment built in, originally designed to carry a dog or two! The back of the box opens outwards, folding down to let the dogs get in and out. The tail board also acts as a foot rest for rear facing passengers.
Dog carts come in a variety of shapes and can be two wheelers or four wheelers they were useful for collecting people from the inn or railway station and with its secure box it was also used for shopping. The dog box usually had seating over it and depending on the size and design a dog cart can carry from two to six people. Most are painted, with the sides of the dog box a contrasting colour to the main body. This can be seen clearly in the photo of a four wheeler pulled by a unicorn of small ponies. (Though some are still seen in varnished wood.)
It was very popular with people going shooting and the dogs would be used to retrieve the birds, bringing them back to the shooters and saving them having to do the hard work! It made a great day out to drive to the shoot and then work the dogs.
Did you know that dogcarts are mentioned many times in the stories about Sherlock Holmes? In case you’re wondering, I think the huge Hound of the Baskervilles would be too big to fit in the compartment! But a tracker dog would fit in to help pursue a criminal!

Junior Quiz JUNIOR GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ sent in by Young Driver Callum Anthony Jones 1) What item should be in your right hand at all times when driving a horse? (Unless giving hand signals on the Public Highway) 2) What item is essential when using a breast collar? 3) You must have this with a two wheeled vehicle. It is checked when both Whip and Groom are in the vehicle by a third person. 4) Who is the BDS chairman? 5) Name three types of tugs: 6) What is the turnout called with two horses, one in front of the other? 7) What is the name of a traditional coach, not road coaches or Mail coaches? 8) Which foundation encourages an interest in all matters connected with horse-drawn vehicles? 9) Where will the 2017 Brian Sims BDS Young Drivers Scholarship be held? 10) Which item should be on the back of the carriage to make it legal to be out on the Public Highway?

Would the dog compartment have louvred sides that look like slats? Yes....... So the dog could breathe!
Which of these are retrieving dogs? Spaniel, greyhound, Pekinese, Alsatian, Labrador (You can tell by the soft flaps of skin by the mouth that help the dog carry a birds without damaging it, so spaniel and Labrador are retrieving breeds)
Are dog carts always pulled by single horses? No. They are light enough for a single horse but could be pulled by more than one, to show off horses they might have more, for example a tandem for a two wheeler or pair or unicorn or even a team for a four wheeler.
Could you ever see a tiger on a dog cart? This is unlikely!!! A “tiger “is a small liveried groom and liveried coachmen weren’t usually taken on a dogcart although there might be someone designated to look after the dogs and horses while the sportsmen enjoyed the social side of the event.
Junior Competition Fun driving our Welsh Cobs in the show ring this season by Jack Kedward
I am very lucky to have two homebred ponies this season. Both of them are homebred Welsh Section Cs bred by my grandfather, although they are very different to each other. Gurnos Welsh Chives is a big up to height bay gelding. He is not a very experienced driving pony as he has only been broken to drive for a year and he is quite an uptight pony however he is very obedient and always eager to please. Gurnos Welsh Eyecatcher is a little 12.2hh chestnut stallion who loves to show off to a crowd. He has many more miles on the clock than Chives, having several years driving experience, including two seasons with myself. He is also very well behaved but with him being a stallion he can be a bit over opinionated at times and a little over eager. But one thing I have noticed about both of them is their stamina. While the other ponies in the classes start to look a bit weary by the end of the show my two are so fit they just seem to get better as the day goes on. I have been to two driving shows with each of them so far this season. The first two were BDS area 49 show and the WPCS Performance Show with Chives. We achieved 2nd and 3rd places at BDS area 49 and 2nd and Reserve Exercise champion at the Performance Show. He had also been placed in dressage, cross country and WHP at the same show showing what a versatile pony he is. I then took Eyecatcher to BDS area 38 at the beginning of June as we had entered the Three Counties Show and wanted to take him somewhere before this as we has not shown him for over a year. He was a little bit excitable
Jack Kedward Driving Gurnos Welsh Chives at the Welsh Performance Show
because of this but we managed a 2nd and two 4ths in some strong classes. Two weeks later we took him up to Malvern for the Three Counties Show. I’d never been there before and was a little bit nervous as it was a big show. We won both our first classes, which were the junior/novice class and the 4 wheeled exercise class. Later on we went into the main ring for the judging of the Sporting Concours Class which was being judged by the president’s wife. Eyecatcher loved the buzz of the main ring and it was a hot, sunny day which made his coat shimmer. He must have caught the eye of the judge as we were pulled in First which was a bit of a shock for me. I’m looking forward to doing more shows with both ponies this season. I hope to do some more BDS area shows as well as some more County Shows and maybe go to Addington as both ponies have qualified for the Junior Semi-Final there.

Dryden Leslie Pennington 1947–2017 Dryden Pennington, who died on January 17th had been Area Commissioner for the Dorset and South Wilts Area since 2015, a role that he took on in the determination, as he put it, ‘to make every member proud to belong to the BDS’. As a young man he had enjoyed his hunting, but his interest in carriage driving began in the 1990s after he retired from the Surrey Police and met the owner of a carriage and pair who ran ‘Pint-to-Pint’ drives in the Henley area. As the name implies, this outfit offered
carriage drives calling at pubs on the way and Dryden was drafted in to help, getting thrown in at the deep end one day when the owner found himself the worse for wear and Dryden had to take the reins. Fortunately the horses knew their way home, but from that moment Dryden was captivated and carriage driving became part of his life. Dryden’s was a busy retirement, always a fan of Tony Hancock, he was involved with the Hancock Appreciation Society and he also became a qualified Toastmaster, later joining the Casterbridge Speakers. When he and his wife Maggie moved to Dorset he soon got to know the local carriage drivers and regularly drove a pair of Friesian horses in the lanes and woodland around Moreton. He had a gentle way with horses, who responded well to his quiet reassurance and praise. A kind man, larger than life and with a great sense of humour, Dryden will be remembered for his love of horses and driving and for his concern for the welfare of others. His funeral took place on February 7th, when more than 180 mourners came to pay their respects. The coffin was driven to Moreton church by Tony Munt with his elegant hearse, drawn by two of Dryden’s Friesian friends in their purple palls. It was an impressive sight and a fitting tribute to a fine man held in affectionate esteem by all who knew him.
Susan Wynne 1933–2017 It is with great sadness that we learned of the unexpected and sudden death of Susan a member of the Leicestershire and Rutland area. She was a country woman who loved riding, walking her dog Ivy and working in the garden. She hunted all her life and was a great help to her late husband when he was Master of the South Notts Hunt. She much enjoyed coming out driving with me and we had many happy hours driving ‘Smarty’ around the lanes and showing her locally. Susan had started to drive one of the ponies at Springbridge Driving Stables and was really enjoying these outings. She also liked the social side of the BDS and most recently had great fun at the Beatle Drive. She was looking forward to the summer activities at Springbridge and the rally we were organising at the hall in Sutton Cheney. Susan will be sadly missed by us all and we send our condolences to all of her family.

Area 33 BDS Show Sunday 11th June
A record-breaking number of entries provided a feast of good classes at the BDS Dorset & South Wiltshire Area Show on Sunday 11th June at the Turnpike Showground, Motcombe. One of the most strongly contested and most encouraging for the future of show driving, was the Novice Horse or Pony class, where judge Jackie Boucher had seven turnouts forward and there was quality right down the final line-up, including Shane White’s Hackney pony Brookfield Our Way and Andrew Hannam’s Jetset Jester. Taking the top spot with a balanced performance, a product of their training for driven dressage at the Winter indoor horse driving events, was Jen

Van Iwaarden driving 17hh Gelderlander Archilles, owned by Tony Munt and Susan Wiles. Tony and Sue’s Highsteppers yard had a busy day with Sue heading the Exercise Vehicles class with another of their Gelderlanders, Joker and later they were the Area Members Reserve Champion behind Liz Coombes with her pair of
Dartmoor ponies Stourton Bryony and Stourton Bracken who were crowned Area Members Show Champion having won the good Pleasure Driving class earlier in the day. Without doubt the busiest whip and groom of the day were Sophie Matthews and Charlotte Matthews, with Sophie’s three Shetland ponies. They competed in five classes with single turnout Sooty, with whom they won the Timed Cones class around a course designed and judged by Vaughan Manners and in the afternoon they contested four classes with Sophie’s pair Sasha and Smartie. The afternoon classes began with six forward for artist David Brackston to consider in the Concours d’elegance. He found his winner in Victoria Morris, with her Welsh Section C pony Drysiog Daniel AP Jet and they went on to take the red ribbon in the strong Mountain & Moorland class that followed, ahead of Mike King with his Welsh Section C pony Menai Leo. The five turnouts forward in the Private Driving class were all of excellent standard and with an eye-catching performance veteran hackney pony Westbourne Highflyer and whip Pauline Holcombe triumphed. Pauline has supported this show for very many years and they went on to take the Show Championship, ahead of Victoria. My Experiences with the BDS by Maggy Stockwin My experiences with the BDS have all been positive and fun. I have stewarded for the pleasure drives and shows for many years and I enjoy grooming when needed. However these last few years I have become more involved as the regular stewards are encouraged to groom and take the whip from time to time. The area organisers Noel Donagher with the tireless help of Iris Fry have set up regular road safety tests with Iris offering the use of her very forgiving ponies and carriages with Noel providing transport, Irish encouragement, a good share of his knowledge and an occasional sponge cake for the enjoyment of all. Jane and Greg Dowle also provided a share in their bottomless bucket of knowledge with Ebony preparing hot food on a cold day. Yes, I thought a very good idea so I booked in to be told I had to drive Coachman style, how is this achieved? By practice and then more practice and for horse riders it is difficult to cultivate the coordination. I passed despite my nerves with the help of many kind words from all present. I attended most of the events last year, and no matter whether I was a helper, groom or whip, members and organisers were helpful and friendly and after the fun we all get together for a bring and share tea so we can swap experiences. This year we have already had several drives and a quiz where our team effort meant we came a very respectable half way. On the 7th April Devon area organised a harness horse and presentation day with Georgina Turner, Geof Dudley and Jessie Dudley all at the top of their game and very kind to a novice such as myself. Again Iris offered me the loan of her wonderful pony Sky and Noel provided me with transport to the venue, all I had to do was find a groom. Lisa came to my rescue, like me an experienced horse rider with carriage driving a completely new experience. I came away with my head buzzing with new information and lots to practice, my groom came away with the same and would like to do more. I have found that joining the BDS and getting involved means I have fun, my circle of friends have increased and with the help of members and organisers I am beginning to know what I am doing when confronted with a pony, harness and carriage. I would like to thank Noel, Iris and all the kind people who work hard to make my days with the BDS so memorable.

Some of the workings of your horse When the winter months bring shorter days and bad weather it can mean that we don’t get out driving as much as we’d like. So it’s good to keep focused and stay in touch with driving friends and with this in mind, the Dorset & S Wilts Area has always tried to organize a series of winter evening meetings, some purely social like Quiz Nights or ‘Pony’ Drives, but some with an educational theme. This year the meetings have included talks by local practitioners who came along to give us the benefit of their experience and we have found, as ever with horses, that there is always something more to learn and that we come away from the evening with new ideas or a fresh angle on a problem. In February farrier Andy Brown gave a talk on shoeing and the care of the horse’s feet, pointing out that the hoof is made of compressed hair, that there are nine bones in the horse’s leg below the knee and amusing us by drawing a pork pie on his blackboard and comparing it to the structure of the hoof! The main thrust of his talk was that care of the horse’s feet is really down to common sense. The foot should be comfortable and uncontrived, with the shoe fitting as naturally as possible and he stressed the importance of resting the horse with shoes off for a month or so each year. In March equine nutritionists Lorna Edgar and Jo Revell gave us a fascinating insight into the way the horse’s insides work and made us think hard about what level and type of feed is best for each individual animal. We were taken right through the digestive system (so to speak!), starting with the importance of the mouth and teeth in producing saliva, the first stage of digestion, to the oesophagus and stomach, the small intestine, the hindgut and the large intestine. We learnt how to use ‘body condition scoring’ in a critical analysis of the horse, scoring for fat and muscle in order to establish the feeding regime needed, which should be linked to the workload and temperament of the horse. In April, members arriving for the meeting were greeted by the sight of two equine skulls, one large and one very small, which equine dentist Claire Vincent had brought along to illustrate some of the points she would make about care of the horse’s mouth and teeth. She stressed the importance of healthy, well-aligned teeth which helped to promote good digestion and a comfortable mouth. Feeding, including hay, was best done from ground level, to replicate the horse’s natural head position when grazing and the breeding of socalled ‘chocolate box’ show ponies was to be avoided, as their tiny heads, while pretty, left no room for all the teeth, with disastrous consequences. Finally, following a lively discussion on bitting, a few brave souls among us agreed to put a hand into the large skull’s mouth to feel just how many teeth were in the horse’s head and how little room there was for a dentist to manoeuvre. So we had three thought provoking and beneficial talks that taught us a lot and kept our interest very much going while we looked forward to the new driving season with a determination to take special care of our horses’ feet, teeth and insides!
